The Young Wizards series

The Young Wizards Series

A different kind of wizardry. a different kind of wizard..

Nearly four decades ago, a strange and intriguing book appeared in libraries across North America. It told a story of two ordinary kids from the New York suburbs who suddenly discovered that magic was loose in their world. If they were willing to risk taking the Wizard’s Oath in the mysterious Manuals they found, they could do what others around them were secretly doing—use the gift of wizardry in the never-ending battle against evil.

In that book’s universe, if you’ve got the smarts and the strength to make it through your wizardly Ordeal, your world can change overnight. You don’t need to go to a special school. All you need are the spells inside your wizard’s Manual and the ancient Speech once used to build the world. Want to carry your magic in a laptop or an iPad? No problem. Prefer to go old-school with a rowan-wood wand soaked in moonlight, or hybrid with an old car antenna loaded up with edgy machine magic? It’s your call.

A wizard’s missions may take them across the planet or across the Galaxy, in company with wizards who’re human or those who’re very much not.  But wherever young wizards go, their Oath makes them part of an age-old battle against the lone Power that went rogue at the dawn of time and turned death loose in the universe.

In company with their ancient allies the Powers that Be, wizards on Earth and across the cosmos fight that battle every day, in this world and countless others… and young wizards like Nita Callahan and Kit Rodriguez are the secret heroes in the fight.

An under-the-radar classic for nearly forty years…

…the Young Wizards stories strike a surefooted balance between adventure across astounding worlds of magic and the personal trials and journeys of two teenage wizards growing up in suburban America. Kit and Nita struggle to balance their friendship and the secrets and dangers of their wizardly lives with the demands of school, family and the rest of modern life. Along with their passionate readers and an ever-growing cast of diverse and fascinating wizardly friends and enemies, Nita and Kit walk the wizard’s road from their initiation Ordeal in a darkly terrifying alternate Manhattan to the depths of the ocean, the depths of space, and far beyond.

The award-winning, ongoing adventures of Nita and Kit now span eleven novels (newest are 2016’s Games Wizards Play and 2017’s Young Wizards: Lifeboats ) and two collections of novelettes, novellas and shorter works. Critically acclaimed from the series’ kickoff with So You Want To Be A Wizard, the Young Wizards novels top many major libraries’ recommendation lists as a must for readers ready to move on to a different kind of wizardry… and a different kind of wizard.

Jon Bon Jovi Reflects on the Band's 40-Year Legacy and Roller-Coaster Journey: 'I Have Great Pride' (Exclusive)

The beloved rocker reminisces on Bon Jovi’s impact — and future — ahead of the April 26 release of the Hulu documentary, 'Thank You, Goodnight'

a young wizard's journey

Jon Bon Jovi is looking back on 40 years of rock stardom, how he got here — and what’s next.

More than four decades ago, Bon Jovi worked as a go-fer at the N.Y.C. recording studio the Power Station.

“The biggest thing I learned there was the bigger the star, the nicer the person,” he says. “It was the Rolling Stones who would hold the door open for you when you were coming in with the burgers and the coffee.”

Then an aspiring musician, Bon Jovi notes he “wasn’t rubbing elbows with the Rolling Stones, but while you were sweeping the floor or parking their car, you would observe. The bigger stars would take a moment to say, ‘How’s that demo going?’ That stayed with me.”

Jon Bon Jovi family archive

Within a few years, Bon Jovi went from running errands to releasing his eponymous band’s breakout hit “Runaway” — and soon joining the ranks of the guitar heroes he saw at the Power Station.

“I was willing to outwork everybody — I think that’s what it came down to,” says Bon Jovi, 62. “I definitely wasn’t the best at anything. I was just the hardest working, and it was nothing more than the desire to get better every day.”

Ebet Roberts/Getty

Now the Bon Jovi frontman and his bandmates are looking back at their journey from suburban New Jersey dreamers to one of the biggest, most beloved rock acts of all time in the new four-part docuseries Thank You, Goodnight: The Bon Jovi Story (streaming on Hulu April 26). The show gives a behind-the-scenes look at their meteoric rise and impressive endurance — along with no-holds-barred commentary on their tumultuous ride, including members’ substance abuse issues and Richie Sambora’s sudden departure.

Bon Jovi also details how recent vocal cord issues nearly forced him into retirement and led him to a new outlook on life.

Jake Chessum

“The thing that gave me so much pleasure had been taken away,” he says. “Joy is something you got to work at, right? Happiness is what you make it. It’s not about seizing the day anymore. I think it’s about embracing the day. I don’t have to punch it in the face anymore, now I just give it a hug, and that’s a good place to be.”

Born John Francis Bongiovi Jr. to his barber father and florist mother Carol (both former Marines), Bon Jovi began playing guitar after he caught the bug from a neighbor in Sayreville, N.J. Inspired by area artists like Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, he started playing on the Asbury Park music scene.

After breaking out in 1984, the band Bon Jovi — rounded out by guitarist Sambora, keyboardist David Bryan, bassist Alec John Such and drummer Tico Torres — cemented their status as rock gods two years later with their album Slippery When Wet and its smash hits “You Give Love a Bad Name” and “Livin’ on a Prayer.”

Bon Jovi has sold more than 130 million albums worldwide and toured over 50 countries, picking up a Grammy and scoring a Rock & Roll Hall of Fame induction along the way. Those accolades were hard earned. Despite their radio and touring success, the band constantly felt the need to prove themselves over the years because they crossed genres and weren’t critical darlings.

“The only way to really prove something like that,” he says, “is just go out there and do it, do it again and do it again.”

And so they did, becoming one of the highest-grossing touring acts of all time.

Adds keyboardist Bryan: “We were relentless young men who set out to make it — and we made it.”

But in 2022, Bon Jovi thought his performing days might be behind him. Having dealt with vocal cord issues for years, he realized he had to get medical help or retire. Nearly two years since he underwent surgery to alleviate loose vocal folds that were stealing his voice, Bon Jovi is on the mend — and hopeful. The band will drop its 16th album, Forever , in June.

After weathering the ordeal, Bon Jovi says the new record “is really about my finding joy again. What really matters in a life? It’s love and loyalty and finding things that make you want to get up out of bed in the morning.”

Mark Seliger

The rocker has plenty to live for. He has been married to wife Dorothea for 35 years, and they share four children, Stephanie, 30, Jesse, 29, Jake, 21, and Romeo, 20.

“I look back at the accomplishments of the band, and my family,” he says, “and I feel great pride.”

And Bon Jovi is now living by the advice he’d give his younger self working at the recording studio: “Take the time to enjoy every phase of it. Some of it was with my head down, staring at the pavement in front of my next step. I could have looked up and saw the sun shining and the clouds in the sky,” he says. “That’d be the only thing I would tell a young kid today. ‘Enjoy that walk.’”

The caption reads: " They say it takes a village to raise a child and I think I’ve had the most incredible village thanks to our cast, guest cast, crew, and producers . Thank you for making this a fun, safe, and loving place for a kid to grow up. This character, these people, and this show has changed my life ever. Thank you for the most amazing childhood and memories. (and thank you for loving me during my baby shark phase)."

Will Missy Return?

While Young Sheldon might be coming to an end, there is already a beaten pathway for the return of some members of the Cooper family with the announcement of the Georgie (Montana Jordan) and Mandy (Emily Osment) spinoff . The show is set to feature how Georgie and Mandy handle the pressures of raising a family while chasing their separate careers . While Missy is arguably the best character of Young Sheldon in earlier seasons, there has been a shift in recent years with the build up of her older brother, Georgie. Currently, Missy will not be a part of the upcoming spinoff , as the actress revealed she has not been invited to partake in the project.

The final episode of Young Sheldon airs on May 16. Past seasons are streaming now on Paramount+ in the U.S. See the images above.

At Least 5 Die Trying to Cross English Channel, Including a Young Girl

The British and French authorities have struggled to find ways to deter people from making the perilous journey.

A ship patrolling open waters under a clear blue sky.

By Aurelien Breeden

Reporting from Paris

At least five people, including a young girl, died at sea off the coast of northern France on Tuesday during an attempt to cross the English Channel, the French authorities said, as governments on both sides of the waterway struggle to deter migrants from making the dangerous voyage to Britain.

The people who died were on an inflatable boat that was heavily overloaded with over 100 people, according to the French authorities. The boat was one of several vessels that were spotted on Tuesday morning by the French Coast Guard near the town of Wimereux.

The deaths came just hours after the British Parliament passed highly contentious legislation to allow the deportation of asylum seekers to Rwanda, a measure that the British authorities have presented as a way of deterring people from attempting the hazardous English Channel crossings.

Jacques Billant, the prefect for the Pas-de-Calais area, told reporters in Wimereux that several people had fallen out of the boat. The coast guard dispatched several vessels to assist, including semirigid inflatable boats and a tugboat, and found several people who were unconscious and in critical condition aboard.

Six people were brought ashore, but emergency workers were unable to resuscitate five of them, Mr. Billant said. The exact circumstances of the deaths and the identities of those involved were not immediately clear.

Jean-Luc Dubaele, the mayor of Wimereux, said that one of the victims was a young girl aged less than 10. Five people died in January near the same beach as they were attempting to traverse the English Channel’s frigid waters.

“It’s hard to accept,” Mr. Dubaele told the French news channel BFMTV .

Mr. Billant said that nearly 50 other people on the boat had been taken ashore and that four had been hospitalized with light injuries.

“Despite this complex and delicate situation, 57 people who were still on the inflatable boat remained on board and did not wish to be rescued,” Mr. Billant said. He added that the group had been able to restart the boat’s engine and had continued on their way to Britain.

In Britain, rights activists and immigration experts have expressed deep skepticism about the law approved by Parliament on Monday night. It has been championed by Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and his Conservative government as a way to stop people from reaching British shores on small boats — even though those people make up only a tiny fraction of asylum seeker arrivals into the country and an even smaller number of the overall migrants to Britain .

Nearly 36,000 people tried to reach British shores by crossing the English Channel last year, according to a report by the French maritime authorities.

One of the worst migrant-related tragedies in the channel came in 2021, when 27 people died after their boat capsized . Many people trying to reach Britain have fled the Middle East or Africa, clustering in small makeshift camps on the coast of northern France before trying to cross in small dinghies.

The British and French authorities have struck multiple deals over the past few years in efforts to curb the number of crossings. Last year, the two countries agreed that Britain would pay France more than $600 million over three years to help pay for drones, a new detention center and hundreds of additional police officers to patrol beaches.

When Fairfax County firefighters found two boys inside a fiery Virginia house earlier this month, 6-year-old William was shielding his younger brother, 3-year-old Zachariah, from the flames. Both boys were pulled from the fire and died days later, but their father says that heroic story has given the family faith.

Jamey Brice, the boys’ father, said firefighters who rescued his kids told him the only thing they could see through the flames and smoke in the Clifton house were the two boys huddled close together.

“Firefighters came in and talked to us and they described … how they saw William protecting Zachariah, how moved they were by the whole thing, and that they had the courage to come tell us,” Brice said. “We’re so grateful for that.”

The fire on April 10 sent five people to the hospital , including Brice’s two youngest sons.

They died on April 14 , Brice said.

Brice’s parents and another one of his sons, 8-year-old Logan, were also inside the home when it caught fire. Those three were able to get out and are expected to survive.

Questions still remain about what happened.

“It was just a weird, freakish fire that we still don’t know what the cause was, or how it started or why it grew so fast,” Brice said.

Heroism on all fronts

“All four boys are a hero in the story,” Brice said of his children.

Logan called 911 after getting out of the flaming home, which Brice said contributed to a fast response from Fairfax County Fire and Rescue.

Both parents were at work when the fire broke out.

Their 13-year-old son Seth alerted them that a friend had texted him about a fire at his house — and the parents were able to quickly race home.

It was later the family learned how William had tried to protect his little brother.

Now, both William and Zachariah are donating their organs, which their father called yet one more act of heroism

“Zachariah always followed William wherever he went,” Brice said. “William led the way down the hallway first, but then knowing that Zachariah is right behind him.”

The boys were able to be together during their surgeries, which Brice said has been a successful process of donating the organs so far.

Brice said the couple is hoping to meet the families of those who received the donated organs in the future. Among the organs that were able to be donated — both boys’ hearts.

“The idea that those two big hearts of love and joy are … going to hopefully live on in somebody else we know is going to be a total blessing,” he said.

“But at the same time somebody’s going to be buying a lot of chicken nuggets because William liked chicken nuggets,” he joked. “That’s about all he ate.”

‘William’s not here’: Healing from loss

In the days after the fire, while the boys remained hospitalized in critical condition, the family gained support from people around the U.S. who hoped the boys would miraculously survive.

Support from the family’s church, along with other churches, the community and even strangers, was moving, Brice said.

“They did such an amazing job, that we could focus on the kids,” he said, adding that supporters carried the family though.

Brice said “excellent care” from medical staff helped buy them time with the boys.

“We’re getting extra snuggles, we got to give them a bath, we got to get like their handprint,” he said.

After tests determined the boys were brain-dead, Brice said around 20 family members gathered and shared a different memory of the brothers.

While mourning the loss of the boys, along with their “many goals and dreams,” Brice said the family has been able to find peace, too.

“They don’t have to deal with all the things of this world that could like harm them,” Brice said. “All of a sudden, we got like, a peace at the same time.”

The couple has turned to their faith.

“If we didn’t have this faith, if we didn’t have this community … our mental health would not be in a good spot,” he said.

Meanwhile, Brice said his parents are suffering from “survivor’s guilt,” having made it out of the fire.

“They desperately were trying to go back in and get them but the fire … forced them all out of the house,” Brice said.

Logan is missing his best friend. That comes out at times, Brice said, including Tuesday when the boys normally would have been heading to taekwondo practice together.

“William and I were gonna both be black belts. But now, William’s not here,” Logan told his father, as Brice recalled.

‘Shine the light back’: Celebrating their lives

Brice said he and his wife want to write a book and make a YouTube channel to share their experience.

“We’re going to make sure people know their story,” he said.

A memorial service will be held at the Word of Life Church in Springfield, Virginia, on Saturday at 4 p.m. Brice is calling the event a “party” to celebrate the boys.

Attendees are being encouraged to wear the boys’ favorite colors, green for William and blue for Zachariah.

Brice said people can also come dressed as superheroes or in jerseys — William wanted to play in the NFL.

“We feel like we were hit by the darkness and we just want to shine the light back,” Brice said. “The best way to do that is just to be an example of faith.”

Eli Katoa was born and raised on a remote Tongan island. Now he's becoming Melbourne Storm's newest weapon

Analysis Sport Eli Katoa was born and raised on a remote Tongan island. Now he's becoming Melbourne Storm's newest weapon

A man celebrates after scoring a try in a rugby league match

As a Melbourne back rower, Eli Katoa has a lot to live up to.

Playing second row for the Storm is a star-making position — the likes of Ryan Hoffman, Felise Kaufusi, Kevin Proctor, Kenny Bromwich, Tohu Harris, Sika Manu and Adam Blair all rose to represent their countries while lurking on the edge for Craig Bellamy's great winning machine.

Sometimes it was a matter of plucking them straight from the junior ranks. Hoffman was an Australian Schoolboy. Blair and Manu were both Junior Kiwis. Proctor, somehow, was both.

Others came from further off the beaten track. Harris got a start after impressing at an open trial in New Zealand. Bromwich and Kaufusi earned their chances after serving lengthy apprenticeships off the bench for the club.

But none of the Storm's legion of successful back rowers have a story quite like Katoa, the current heir to the second-row throne.

It began a world away from the bright lights of NRL stardom in the Tongan village of Koulo.

It's the kind of place that's hard to find unless you already know where it is. Head north from Nuku'alofa for about 200 kilometres until you reach the Ha'apai islands group.

There, on the island of Lifuka, you'll find Koulo, population 171. That's home for Katoa, it always will be, and until he left for boarding school in Auckland when he was 17, it was his world

"Mum and my family are still over there. Last year I managed to get them over for a game, it was the first time they'd left Tonga. I want to do the same thing this year, getting them over here, that's the main thing for me," Katoa said.

"The thing I miss the most is my family. The whole community is great, but it's all about my family. I have one brother and two sisters, I'm the second youngest and they're all still over there.

"I try to get there once a year, I always love going home.

"It's a flight from Nuku'alofa, or a boat. But it doesn't matter how far it is, not to me."

A man runs the ball during a rugby league match

It must feel so removed from the bright lights of the Sydney Football Stadium, where Katoa scored a try and set up another in Melbourne's win over the Roosters last week .

The match showed why the Storm were so keen to get Katoa over from the Warriors last year and why he signed a three-year extension with the club midway through 2023.

He has the size to barrel over defenders, the quick feet to hit holes, the athleticism to act as an aerial threat, the soft hands to throw passes and catch bombs and the attacking skill to ball-play before the line and offload in contact.

There were glimpses of those attributes during his time with the Warriors, where he played 46 games in three seasons from 2020 to 2022 – enough so that Canberra and the Dolphins were keen on the 24-year old.

But finding raw, talented players who just need the right guidance is as much of a tradition for Bellamy's Storm as producing back rowers. The fit was perfect, right from the start.

Katoa had a strong maiden campaign with the club, recovering from an eye injury that he initially feared would leave him half-blind to finish the season strongly and earn his Test debut for Tonga.

There's been more of the same in 2024 — he's scored three tries, set up two more, averaged 100 metres a game and increased his defensive workrate.

In short, he's starting do all the things the great Melbourne back rowers of the past have done. It's a lot to take on, but he's up for the challenge.

"Everyone knows how good a club they are, their history speaks for itself. When I first came in, everyone was so welcoming and you could see that culture from day one — everyone wants to win, but everyone is just as focused on working for each other," Katoa said.

"That's what we pride ourselves on here."

Katoa admits he's far from the finished product. When it comes to rugby league, he's still a relative beginner even after four years in the top grade — he'd only played 13 games of league in his entire life before his NRL debut in 2020.

He had a couple of errors against the Roosters but he's getting closer to realising his enormous talent by the week and his work off the ball, especially defensively and chasing kicks, remained strong.

For all the things he can do that few other back rowers can match, mastering those little things are what will truly make him the Storm's next back-row success story and he is hell bent on getting there.

"I wouldn't say I'm comfortable, I'm more confident. Last year was a lot about adapting to the system, learning how they play, and this year I know my role better and the role of the players around me," Katoa said.

"It's all down to the reps we do at training, that's what's behind all the combinations.

"I didn't have the best start [against the Roosters], I was forcing some offloads, but that's footy and I'm not going to go away from my strength.

"I still need to work on it, because it put a lot of pressure on us. Sometimes it's not there, that's what I'm still learning.

"Jahrome Hughes has been a big part of it, he's really worked hard on building our combination, but everyone's been great. I don't have any family in Melbourne but I live near some of the boys and they're always there for me."

Katoa will again form a big part of Melbourne's game plan when they take on the Rabbitohs on Anzac Day.

The match is one of the club's highlights of the season, with a bumper crowd expected at AAMI Park, and they will all be watching back home.

The CEO of Digicel bought a TV for Katoa's mother not long after his NRL debut so she could see her boy play and now half the village comes around to watch the pride of Koulo as he strives to live up to what's come before him.

He's doing everything he can to get there and they're all with him every step of the way.

"They loved the Warriors," Katoa said.

"But as soon as I moved, they all jumped on the Storm."

How Graham Barton's journey to the 2024 NFL Draft began as a young Ravenwood offensive lineman

a young wizard's journey

Former Ravenwood football coach Matt Daniels' culture building began as soon as he arrived at Ravenwood in 2017 and it started with a 215-pound sophomore offensive lineman in Graham Barton . Daniels knew immediately Barton had the respect of his teammates and could build success around his young center.

This week, Barton will make good on what Daniels knew when Barton graduated from Ravenwood in 2020. The 6-foot-5, 313-pound Duke senior is a projected first- or second-round selection when the NFL Draft starts at 7 p.m., Thursday in Detroit (ESPN).

"For me, at this point, It's just a waiting process," Barton said. "You wait to hear your name called. And when the opportunity comes, if it comes, I'll be grateful and ready to get started."

No one questions Barton's skills translating to the NFL. The prevailing question is where he'll fall in the draft. He could be among the first 32 picks on Thursday, but where he ultimately lands will depend on what position teams envision Barton playing.

Barton is a four-year starter at Duke and spent the previous three seasons as a left tackle. As a freshman, he played center and is a strong candidate to play that position in the NFL. Barton, who skipped the NFL combine last month, participated in Duke's pro day on March 28. He isn't worried where he'll line up at the pro level.

"Everyone has a different take on me," he said. "It depends on the team and who you ask, but that speaks to the versatility I can bring."

ESPN's Mel Kiper has Barton projected to go No. 20 to the Pittsburgh Steelers, who brought in Barton on April 16 for a visit. CBS Sports has Barton eight spots lower, going to Seattle at No. 28 . Of the three NFL.com mock drafts, Barton is projected as high as No. 16 to Philadelphia.

"I don’t have a sense of where I’ll go or what round," said Barton, whose Blue Devils finished 8-5, knocking off Troy, 17-10, in the Birmingham Bowl on Dec. 23. "I try not to get caught up too much in draft order. I just want to get on a team that has a great locker room and a great culture and go from there."

Barton was a part of building the kind of culture that Daniels wanted at Ravenwood. It's rare a high school coach can walk into his first year and be spoiled with the talent the Raptors had.

During Daniels' coaching tenure, he had players like Barton, defensive end Reggie Grimes , linebacker Junior Colson , quarterback Brian Garcia and tight end Jake Briningstool .

Daniels described Barton as extremely gifted athletically.

"We played Pulaski Academy (Arkansas) his senior year and won (61-47). In critical moments we had Graham play a few snaps on defense, and he was asked to go in on a critical fourth-down play, was getting taped up. So Graham abandoned the tape job , sprinted on the field just as Pulaski snapped the ball, he put a pass-rush move on their center and was in the backfield in less than a second."

GRAHAM BARTON Ravenwood lineman chooses Duke football over Michigan State, Vanderbilt

Barton, a three-star offensive lineman and the No. 20 prospect in the state helped Ravenwood finish 13-2 during Barton's senior year, losing to Maryville in the TSSAA Class 6A BlueCross Bowl in 2019. He was one of six Ravenwood football players named First Team All Midstate by The Tennessean in 2019. Nine total Raptors were named to either the first, second or third team.

In addition to Barton playing at Duke, Colson played three seasons at Michigan, winning the CFP national championship in January. Both spent time together during pre-draft workouts in Frisco, Texas in February. Grimes entered the transfer portal after four seasons at Oklahoma, and Briningstool was named third team all ACC at Clemson last fall.

"Graham would always hang out in the coaches’ office after practice and have conversations about practice plans and reflect about practices," Daniels said. "I recall thinking that was unusual for a young high school kid. He felt comfortable doing that and that rubbed off on other guys. He led by example."
