Misamis Occidental is one of the budding tourist spots of the country, with a combination of virgin nature and cultural heritage sites. While there’s a high chance it’s not on your bucket list right now, these tourist spots in Misamis Occidental would change your mind into visiting the province!

Top Tourist Spots in Misamis Occidental

Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Misamis Occidental, Philippines

Parish church of st. john the baptist.

Located in the town of Jimenez, this heritage church’s structure hails from the 19th century, and its European architecture is built from the traditional sand-and-coral-stone process of the time. It is among the most well-preserved churches in the country, with its ornate interior and painted ceilings being hailed as one of the nation’s National Cultural Treasures!

Piduan Curtain Falls

This wonderful series of falls is located in Piduan Valley, Don Victoriano Chiongbian. Part of the Malindang Mountain Range, the Curtain Falls is accessible after a two-hour ascent. Its stunning beauty lies in its expanse, with water streaming from a wide breadth of streams embedded in the rocks of the mountainside. The crystal-clear falls looks like a curtain of shining gossamer amidst the raw greens of the forest!

Aquamarine Park

Straddled by the municipalities of Sinacaban and Tudela, the Misamis Occidental Aquamarine Park houses a wide variety of native animals. Its major attractions include the Dolphin Island, a man-made island that has just recently been renovated. There is also a fish-hatching station and a mangrove forest. Aside from marine mammals and various aquatic creatures, the park also has a wildlife center! Those wishing to visit this expansive tourist spot in Misamis Occidental can also lodge at the hut-style cottages along the mangrove forest.

Sapang Dalaga Falls

Also called the Baga Falls, this is an easily accessible tourist spot that is only about two kilometers away from the town proper of Sitio Celso Velez. Instead of raw nature, the falls is surrounded by a park (with a statue of the titular maiden). The park is complete with picnic tables and a function hall, making it great for family outings.

Baliangao Sunrise Beach

If you’re looking for a good white-sand beach, Sunrise Paradise Resort in Baliangao has just what you need. The beach has all the amenities you would expect, but only a handful of people are here at a time so you can enjoy the serenity of nature. There are rustic swings, a volleyball court, and affordable cottages, but the area is dominated by a very rural feel that might just be what you need to disconnect and unwind from the grind.

Hoyohoy Highland Mountain Park

Located in Tangub City , this park is famous for operating two of the longest zip lines in the county. It also offers magnificent views of Panguil Bay, along with the surrounding towns. The park also has gardens where scientific studies are conducted on plants. It’s a one-of-a-kind botanical garden. Located in Barangay Hoyohoy at the foot of Mt. Malindang, this is one of the top tourist spots in Misamis Occidental.

Since Misamis Occidental is just a short drive from the other gems of Mindanao, it’s worth your time to pay it a visit. You’re sure to have a grand time!

Dude, you’re so incoherent. I like it how you explain something and the next sentence that comes next to it goes in contrast of what you just said… its so pathetic I love it. Hahaha

First of all, you said Jimenez Church is located “in Ozamis City”. Did it not come to you that its called “Jimenez Church” and not Ozamis Church is because of the fact that its located in the town of Jimenez, a few kilometers north of Ozamis City? Lol.

Then when it comes to Piduan Curtain Falls you said it is easily accessible, then you placed “after a two-hour ascent”. Lol, tell me how a “two-hour ascent” is easy?

Also, I lost it when you said something about Baliangao Sunrise Beach, “The virgin beach has all the amenities you would expect”. Well, I thought the basic essence of a “virgin” beach is its rawness, meaning, absent of any sort of amenities, its like on its most “natural” form, absent of any amenities, hence the term “virgin”.

Jimenez: A Heritage Treasure in Misamis Occidental

 alt=

It was a fun and hectic day exploring the towns of Clarin , Don Victoriano, and Tudela. But the day wasn’t over yet because we still had to visit one special town in Misamis Occidental – Jimenez . A heritage town known for its well-preserved Spanish colonial-era church and ancestral houses.

It was already dark when we arrived at Jimenez Tourism Office but Mayor Joselito Chiong and Sir Bong Abelidas, Municipal Tourism Officer, were still full of energy as they welcomed us with delectable local dishes.

When they talked about their town, we all felt their pride in the rich heritage and history of Jimenez. The moment we stepped out of the building to explore the church, we all understood why.

San Juan Bautista Parish Church

The lighting outside the church was just beautiful. St. John the Baptist Church is one of the most intact and preserved Spanish churches in the country. Built in the 19th century, the church has withstood the test of time and was hailed as a National Cultural Treasure in 2001.

St. John the Baptist Church

It was drizzling at that time but that didn’t stop us from exploring more. Inside we witnessed the central attraction of the church, the well-preserved old altar, and the Gothic-style pillars giving us a feeling of traveling back to the Spanish colonial era. It’s impossible not to notice the exquisite paintings on the walls and ceiling which were completed in 1898.

On the second floor is a pipe organ overlooking the entire altar. It is the same pipe organ installed during the 1890s when the church was being constructed.

Then, we climbed our way to a wooden stair going to the belfry, offering us a spectacular view of the town.

Jimenez’s Ancestral Houses

The next day, we were so delighted to have a chance to explore Jimenez to witness the church in the morning and stroll around the area.

Sir Bong was kind enough to give us a tour. This was one of the most interesting parts of the visit, listening to the narratives and stories behind these old structures.

Honestly, I was impressed with how they were able to preserve some of the old houses. Although there is still some work to do, it’s already an amazing feat. I hope that the support to protect these structures will come not just from the municipal and provincial levels but national as well.

Kailangan talaga ang selfie. Haha

One important takeaway from this visit is the importance of travel in enriching our life experiences and knowledge. Before going to Misamis Occidental, I didn’t know about the heritage town of Jimenez.

Yes, we’re aware of Intramuros , Calle Crisologo, and all. But Jimenez? I don’t think this was even mentioned or taught in school. So if you have the chance, travel as much as you can, it would make us appreciate more of our history and heritage as a nation.

Some of the most noteworthy structures are the Casa de Ozamiz and the Bacaro Printing Press building. These are just a few meters away from the church and the municipal hall.

Casa de Ozamiz’s color commands everyone’s attention. Located at the corner of the main streets, this used to be the residence of Jose Ozamiz, the first and only Senator coming from the province. Misamis Occidental’s financial hub, Ozamiz city , was also named after him.

Another standout from more than a hundred ancestral houses in the area is Aldren Nacion’s residence, famously known as Rosito Bacarro’s House or Bacarro Printing Press. Its design looks like the typical mansion houses in the colonial era, but this played a huge role in our history. It used to be the printing press of Japanese banknotes during World War II known as the Mickey Mouse money .

Shanghai Noodle House

After the tour, make sure you drop by Shanghai Noodle House located in another old house and try their Spring rolls or lumpia.

There are 103 ancestral houses in Jimenez, just take a walk and you’ll be in awe, feeling you’re being transcended back during the Spanish and Japanese occupations. Jimenez is definitely a treasure we must value and protect for the next generations.

This visit to Jimenez is part of the Laag-Laag sa MisOcc project of the Provincial Tourism Office in cooperation with DOT Region 10, TPB, and all the municipalities. Thank you for this opportunity!

Travel Guide: 10 Places to Visit in Misamis Occidental

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

Misamis Occidental is a province located in the region of Northern Mindanao in the Philippines. It is shaped like a collapsible fan or a loaf of American bread or the letter D in the alphabet.

Its delectable suman and mouth watering lechon , pleasant climate, rich culture and history, stunning beaches and magical falls, unique architecture, and warm people are the best reasons why one should include Misamis Occidental in their travel bucket list.

I was privileged to have visited this precious gem in Northern Mindanao and on this blog, I'll be giving you a list of the places and activities that you should not miss.

1. The Cathedral of Our Lady of the Immaculate Conception

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

Located in the heart of Ozamiz City, the Cathedral is a popular destination for religious pilgrims. This Cathedral is the seat of the Catholic faith in Ozamiz.

The arched columns and beams give it a modern vibe but still exudes calmness and peace. Huge statues of St. Augustine and St. Ignatius welcome its parishioners and pilgrims at the entrance.

Located at the choir loft is a pipe organ installed in the 1960's , said to be the only pipe organ present in the entire Mindanao. It is also the 2nd largest in the Philippines.

While the architecture does not feature coral stones like that of Jiminez', the interiors are ornate and detailed- a testament of the Misamisnon's uplifting and inspiring faith.

2. Cotta Fort

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

Originally built in 1756 to serve as Spanish outpost, Cotta Fort was renovated and restored to its original design in 2002. It was originally built using large stones believed to have come from Panguil Bay and Siquijor.

Known as the " El Fuerte de la Concepcion y Del Triunfo " in Spanish, Cotta Fort once served as the shelter for the ships of the Spanish fleet during that time.

The place reminded me of Fort Santiago. During my visit at MisOcc, this is where we had a hosted dinner. It was raining that night and the outdoor setup would have been lovely but we don't want to get drenched and dined inside the small hall instead.

3. Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

Located in Tangub City, Hoyohoy Highland Stone Chapel Adventure Park is situated on top of a hill offering its visitors a stunning panoramic view of the surrounding countryside.

The main attraction of the place is the stone chapel, which is made entirely of local materials and features beautiful stained glass windows.

The place used to offer recreational activities like zip-lining, rope courses and wall climbing. These were halted, though, during our time of visit but we were told it will soon resume to its normal operations.

It gave us Baguio vibes here. It was foggy when we arrived here and it wasn't even too late of an afternoon that time. It was romantic and serene and kind of made me want to sip coffee and just enjoy being with nature. With the combination of its breathtaking views and natural beauty , this place should not be missed.

4. Piduan Curtain Falls

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

Located in Don Victoriano Chiongbian, this 60 meter curtain falls is a stunner. In order to reach this place, we trekked around 20-30 minutes. Depending on your pace, you can get there earlier. The long walk sure tired my feet and legs but the trek itself was a great opportunity to appreciate the natural beauty of the area, with towering trees and diverse flora and fauna.

We ate our lunch here and the view of its cascading waters was as sumptuous. Some of my friends took the opportunity to immerse their bodies in the cool and clear waters. I was tempted to bathe too but due to limited time, I was content taking pictures with the falls in the background.

Piduan Falls is also known for its cultural significance. The area is considered sacred by the local Subanen Tribe.

5. Belvedere Tangub

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

Belvedere, an Italian word for "Fair View", is situated on top of a hill and offers visitors a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding country side, including the neighboring Mt. Malindang and Panguil Bay.

The main attraction of Belvedere is the observation deck which offers 360-degree view of the area. It is a component to the soon to be fully developed Gardens of the World project.

6. San Juan Bautista Parish, Jimenez

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

This Baroque, late 19th century church in Jimenez is a National Cultural Treasure.

The interiors are very well preserved and features a painting done in 1898 and portions made of tanique pampango, a local version of a dry wall using panels of interwoven slats or branches covered with lime.

A magnificent steel pipe organ can also be found at the choir loft. It is said to have been installed in 1891.

7. Jimenez Heritage Town

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

After our visit to the historical church of San Juan Bautista in Jimenez, we also had a walking tour in this heritage town. Jimenez is known for its heritage houses, which are a testament to the town's rich history and culture. These houses are a blend of different architectural styles, including Spanish and American.

Being in this quaint town was like a walk back in time. We had a glimpse of the Bacarro house. The architecture features large windows, balcony and intricate wood work. It is known as the old Bacarro Printing Press where bills during the Japanese occupation were printed.

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

I was in awe with a great number of well-preserved houses in Jimenez. My jaw dropped in intricate wood carvings and beautiful capiz windows. I felt like I was transported to a time when our old folks don native baro't saya and kamisa de chino and carabao and horse carriages. And yeah, I wish we had a longer time to walk to its streets.

This is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in history, architecture and culture.

8. Bawbawon Island

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

This hidden gem is located in Plaridel. This tropical paradise is perfect for guests who are looking for unspoiled beaches with crystal-clear waters. The place is relatively undeveloped which makes it an ideal spot if you're wanting to escape the hustle and bustle of city life and just want to enjoy the tranquility of the nature.

To go here, we hopped on a boat from Plaridel. The ride took us at least 30 minutes passing thru a lush flora of mangroves.

Bawbawon means shallow in local dialect. One word of caution, guests have to be back before the sea go on a low tide. We got stuck in the middle because a part of waters were already shallow for a boat to navigate.

Located in the municipality of Sapang Dalaga, this 60 feet tall falls is surrounded by lush greenery and is one of the more popular destinations to locals and tourists alike. Unlike the long trek to Piduan falls, this one's relatively easier with just 10 minute walk. Yes, no need to trek.

Visitors can enjoy swimming in the cool, refreshing waters or simply relax and enjoy the scenery. There are also available  picnic huts and tables available.

There's a very interesting story about the lady in the falls. You'll have to visit here to know more about it.

10. Suman House of Clarin

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

One's visit to Misamis Occidental will not be complete without experiencing the famous suman of Clarin.

The Suman House is a local establishment that specializes in making suman, a Filipino delicacy made from glutinous rice, coconut milk and sugar, wrapped in banana leaves.

Aside from freshly made suman, you can also eat and buy other local delicacies like bibingka and other rice cakes.

During the time that we were here, we also had the chance to see how a suman was made. My favorite is the suman moron- one with chocolate filling.

HOW TO GO TO MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL

By Air, a flight from Manila to Ozamiz Airport usually takes an hour and 40 minutes. Alternatively, you can also take a flight to Laguindingan Airport in Cagayan de Oro then take a van or bus to Ozamiz City.

By Land, it is accessible by bus from Cagayan de Oro, Iligan, Zamboanga, Pagadian and Dipolog.

By Ferry, 2Go serves Manila, Iligan, Tagbilaran and Cebu routes to Port of Ozamiz City. Ferries from Cebu, Siquijor and Bohol are available weekly en route to Port of Plaridel.

LAAG-LAAG SA MISAMIS OCCIDENTAL

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

My trip to Misamis Occidental was one of the best I've had. The LGU gave us the warmest welcome. The biggest show of love is the long line of students, all smiles and waving orange flags, to show their warmest welcome as we enter Tangub. I mean, I've been to several Tourism invites but this one's for the book. I really felt the love. It made us feel like celebrities!

Every meal felt like FIESTA! We had lechon all the time! In every hosted meals, we went from one municipality/city to another. Some even had dances and bands to welcome us. We had our tummies and hearts full.

This is my first trip to Mindanao and I can truly say it is very safe to go on a trip to Misamis Occidental.

Whether you're a nature lover or an adventure seeker or wanting to discover a new oasis, Misamis Occidental is a great place to escape the city.

Jimenez | Misamis Occidental’s Heritage Grace

Jimenez may be a faded has-been of a town in Misamis Occidental but it is in its timeworn character that blushes of sepia mood become a rare brilliance. It is quiet & nonchalant, beautifully candid in its folksy ambience.

But how could a town brimming with century-old treasures not talked about by travellers or even taught at school?

I am a homegrown Mindanaoan, yet I have to admit that I didn’t know there is a heritage township sitting seemingly anonymous in Jimenez. And yes, it’s just right behind the national highway, a road that I used to drive a lot around in the past.

But back then, tourism was oblivious in this province. Thanks to the re-energized Department of Tourism-Region 10, this old town is finally taking its spotlight on the heritage tourism stage.

Discover Jimenez, Misamis Occidental

Misamis was already a Spanish settlement as early as the 16 th century. At the close of the colonial era, it had massive stone houses around the province & a fort called Fuerte dela Concepción y del Triunfo that still stands to this day in Ozamiz City .

Jimenez was an opulent municipality that produced abaca & copra. This abundance drew many merchants & traders to settle in & later created the wealthy profile of the town. Among the most notable old families here are the Ozámiz, Tamarongs & Bacarros.

It is then no surprise that grand ancestral houses fill Jimenez — not just 1, 2, 3 but more than a hundred spread across a small agricultural town.

The Ozámiz Mansion is one of the most important architectural landmarks in Jimenez. It was built in the early 1900s & belonged to Don Genaro Ozámiz & Basilisa Fortich, whom sired Don José, the hero of Misamis Occidental.

This principalia mansion, a classic wood & masonry style, received many political dignitaries in its time. It is still lived to this day by Señorita Carmen Ozámiz.

The only 3-storey cultural property in Jimenez is the house of Rosito Z. Bacarro. Built in the 1910s, it stands imposing in white ornated with appliqued carvings, grill works & arched windows. It is commonly known as the old Bacarro Printing Press where the emergency bills during the Japanese government were printed.

Today Mr. Aldren Nacion owns the house but still keeps many memorabilia from the yesteryears.

The oldest house in Jimenez is the one of Don Ygnacio Tamarong built in the 1800s. He was the 7 th mayor during the Spanish colonial government. Over time it had various owners like Mr. Daniel Lee, to taipan William Chiongbian & to Constancio Balais. Today its current resident Mayor Rosario Kais Balais administers it.

Update: Fire ravaged the Balais House in December 2020

Restaging Heritage Finery

Jimenez is the kind of town where the simplest of pleasure is found in leisure walks around its old narrow streets & soaking in all the feeling of nostalgia. It’s a whimsical experience of being in a place that is graceful & where whammies of big city crimes, traffic & pollution are seemingly absent.

With the support of various agencies, the glow of its bygone luster is finally rekindled through staging its heritage district to tourism. And at the heart of its nostalgic showpiece is the Church of St. John the Baptist expressed in 1898 Baroque aesthetics.

Declared as a National Cultural Treasure, the church is made of hewn coral & keeps a beautiful fresco on its ceiling. Interestingly, it is also home to one of the country’s oldest pipe organ & the relic of St. Faustina.

Running straight from the church is Rizal Street, a long stretch of homes reminiscent of 1900s colonial architectural styles. Save for some minor restorations & tidying up of wires, the core heritage district is otherwise ready for the spectacle. Construction of brick pavements is also in full swing, to be followed by lampposts & house markers.

I can imagine how lovely it would be when all of its plans are completed. Soon, there’ll be more locally-owned period-themed restaurants like Bloomsbury Café that adopted retro-style. Craft shops will begin to sprout in the “silong” of these houses. And I can’t wait to find myself bedding down on vintage flair in what would be their version of exquisite homestays.

Jimenez is my kind of high — quaint, full of character, vibrantly raw & easygoing. Tourists may have overlooked this spot but with its old town revival in the grind, it wouldn’t take long ‘til we see them flocking here on cultural trips someday.

I have been to Jimenez many times & I still can’t get over the lucid sepia feels. I love the face of its bucolic townscape filled with the bequests of heritage splendor. My heart is aflame to see it soon on UNESCO’s precious list of heritage sites in the Philippines. Help us make it happen, visit Jimenez someday too.

Irosin, sorsogon | too pretty just to be..., you may also like, comments ( 2 ).

I am Petrus T. Calope, MD born in Jimenez in 1943. Thanks for featuring the pueblo of Jimenez with its centuries-old Catholic church. The beautiful church, unfortunately, has also a sad story that haunts it past. During its construction parishioners were required and forced to contribute one block of coral or rock for its construction every time they come for mass on Sundays. It was an onerous demand by the church and government which was one and the same at that time. My great grandfather Cabeza de Barangay Francisco Calope known as “Barangay Isko” did not cooperate, instead, he took his clan out of the church and joined the Iglesia Filipina Independiente. He was suspected as a member of the Katipunan, it was said that he visited Rizal once when he was in exile in Dapitan at that time Barangay Isko was incarcerated by the Spaniards and tortured to death in the Spanish Fortress or “cota” in the city of Misamis now known as Ozamis City. For a time, there were more Aglipayans and Protestants during the American regime than Catholics in Jimenez because of the construction of the beautiful church. Most of the faithful have already returned to Catholicism after the 2nd World War, but I think the Calope clans have remained outside the fold. It is part of our history, we are not bitter anymore, the wound is healed. Thanks again.

Hi Dr Petrus. Thanks for sharing your story. This adds to my interest to go back to Jimenez & know more about its people, especially the original settlers. Sad to know that your great grandfather had to go through the polo system during the Spanish period. Are there any written literature that I can go through perhaps about Jimenez’ history (or untold stories) that can help my next story? Thanks

Experience the Magical Jimenez town’s Heritage District | Misamis Occidental

Known to be dotted with ancestral houses, the town of Jimenez deserves as one of the best walking tours you can experience at the province of Misamis Occidental. Surviving various calamities and human-caused deterioration, one can easily spot antique houses dating back from the Spanish colonial period, noting the conspicuous architectural splendour that is unmistakably western influenced.

Bask on its past glory and spectacle trodding its crisscrossing streets that create a bespoke labyrinth of arteries connecting the antiquatedly lavish private dwellings and of local business entities with the San Juan Bautista Parish Church at its cultural and historical helm. Named the place after the first priest believed who provided livelihood to the first Catholic converts, the town of Jimenez is strategically located between the administrative capital of Oroquieta and the commercial centre of Ozamis. Visiting the heritage district will never be an arduous one thanks to the established route links which are actually less than an hour of drive from the Labo Airport in Ozamis. Vying its way to the heritage stardom of the Philippines, one cannot take away the sense of being pulled back in time once you marveled at its current state.

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

The magic starts as you saunter towards the monumental Baroque parish church of San Juan de Bautista, fronting a spacious yard with ample greeneries and an open lawn that can tell stories of the past. The tri-arched facade complemented by the tall bell tower and the walls of hewn coral stone exerts its prominence and unspoken influential power in the realm of the province’s heritage arm in tourism. And as the day turns to night, the warm tones of artificial light illuminate its exterior, an impelling romantic lustre form of beauty exudes. It was like a visual and silent lullaby truly dear to my senses.

I think the best way to experience its beauty is by daybreak. It is when the town slowly breathes to life from its deep slumber, as the streets are at their sleepy state and when the locals start to go on with their daily toil.

tourist spot in jimenez misamis occidental

A few strides from the church lawn with natural green turf, it is evident of its rich heritage status with the culturally treasured houses unveiling themselves walking towards them. Surviving the usual wear and tear, and its immense surviving structures are what make this town challenge the ones from Vigan. With minimal retouching and renovation, its present face could tell the story of its past. The Shanghai Noodle House building is made unique with its seeming twin gable style extended roof and its wooden radial design detail on its upper window panes. The Tac-An-Olarte HOuse features a combined thatched and modern roofing material. The Yu-Larilin House is a picturesque facade that features equidistant square windows and longitudinal doors that creates a beautiful pattern. Fronting this structure is the Azcuna House which features a woven design placed below its window panes to improve its ventilation. One residence strongly influenced by Spanish Architecture is the Casa De Ozamiz. It features a two-storey building with added window shades and wavy wood carvings that seems to be buttress. The Upper windows match the doors on its lower level creating a dramatic pattern. Easily recognizable is the historic Aldren Tac-An Nacion Residence which could be the only three-story residence built on a corner lot. It was in the year 1914 when this charming plastered-in-white facade residence is finished. These are just a few of the hundreds mapped by Municipal Tourism up to the town’s upland portions. Surrounding the town center are 34 identified residential houses seemingly curated to create this one gigantic open-air museum.

More than of its antique architectural splendor, it is the warmth of Jimenez locals that truly captivates and sealed our experience of their place. Headed by their chief executive Mayor Jojo Chiong, we were given a taste of their local delicacies and their best version of hot cocoa right inside their modern tourism building.

Stories of Places, People and Photography in the Philippines and Beyond

Misamis Occidental | Jimenez: An Old Mystical Heritage Town

Having one of the oldest monuments in the Philippines in the form of the impressive San Juan Bautista Church , I wasn’t surprised that there were more to discover in this predominantly Catholic municipality of Jimenez , Misamis Occidental . We met with our local guide from the DOT office to give us a tour of the town. Visiting the church, it was a good idea the tourism installed a few boards showcasing the other attractions in town. Particularly noticeable were the heritage houses, a cemetery and a mysterious tree by the river.

Town Heritage

Just a few meters walk from the church we already saw from a street corner the pinkish to cream hues of the Casa de Ozamiz . The wood design under the roof at the second story of the house caught my attention. The details were eye catching. And just a quick turn to another street corner, we found another stately heritage in the Old Bacarro Printing Press building. Originally the residence of the Aldren Tac-An Nacion family which was built in 1914, it was used as a printing press during the Japanese occupation where emergency money was printed. Some of this money can still be viewed at the second floor of the house. As of the moment there were no clear cut plans what they intend to do with this building. There was a shop at the ground floor but I thought this would be great as a museum or a bed and breakfast. There were other houses in Jimenez like the ancestral house of former congressman Chiongban, Domingo, Cajita and the Yu-Larotin couple.

The Old Cemetery

Cemeteries seems odd to be an attraction but the Old Cemetery at Barangay Dicoloc is worth mentioning since the walls were built right along the time when the San Juan Bautista Church was built. Father Roque Azcona, the one initiated the construction of the Jimenez Church ,  was also at the helm of building this cemetery. The old walls were still there but what made this cemetery of interest to me was the eerie atmosphere is has because of the humongous balete tree at the center of the cemetery. I was told this tree could be 155 years old. Its branches spread widely to the sky like a roof eternally blanketing the cemetery in shadows. Did I feel any presence in this big tree? I may have or not but as we left, our guide made us cross over a small flame just to make sure any unseen being wouldn’t follow us. Yes they still believe that and there was no harm in following the practice.

The enchanted Kamil Tree on the next page…

JIMENEZ HERITAGE TOWN

Be transported back in time in the iconic Jimenez Heritage Town which has over 100 original ancestral houses dating as far back as the 1800s. A stroll in the streets of Jimenez would make you feel as if the houses and the edifices themselves are telling their owns stories of war, peace, culture, and progress that have fostered in the place. Oh, if the walls could talk, what wonderful stories they will tell! Two notable houses are the residences of Senator Ozamiz, the first senator from Mindanao and the Tac-an House which served as the printing press of the Japanese “Mickey Mouse” money during the 1940s. At its heart is the nostalgic showpiece is the beautiful St. John the Baptist Church which was declared as a National Historical Treasure and has withstood the test of time for almost 140 years.

Destinations at Jimenez,Misamis Occidental

A 40-minute drive from the commercial center of Ozamiz City is the heritage town of Jimenez.Established in 1829 as a pueblo then as a town in 1859, the said municipality is the oldest town in the province. Here is rundown of 7 destinations you must not miss at Jimenez Misamis Occidental.

1. Heritage Houses
With its 103 heritage houses, a walk in the alleys of Jimenez is like traveling back to time. Beneath the wooden walls and wide windows—mostly made from capiz shells—of each Spanish colonial period houses are interesting stories of the people who resided there.
Perhaps, this was my fave part of the trip, being enthralled with the narratives of each house:like as if you're there witnessing all of it.   Rosito Z. Bacarro house
One of the famous houses in the area is the Aldren Nacion's residence formerly known as the Rosito Z. Bacarro's house. The facade is an archetype of rich people mansions from the colonial era.Yet,would you believe that this house played a key role in the history of the Philippines.
Yes! You read it right! mundane as it seems but this house used to be a printing press of bank notes during the World War II. So how was that possible? From 1941 to 1943, the Japanese troops gradually invaded the Philippines. Since the country is an archipelago, the southern parts were conquered on a latter period. On those times, the US soldiers based in Mindanao were having a problem to finance their military force.
Luckily for them, they knew that the Misamis Occidental Currency Committee only printed a small fraction of bank notes their authorized to produced. Thus, the US troops ordered to print the remaining sums of money. Following this, it was also discovered that the Mindanao Emergency Currency Board still has remaining bank notes for printing. Yet, the original members of the board already surrendered, thus, the US force reconstituted new members. It was in April 1943 at this house where the printing of the remaining bank notes happened and the rest they say is history. FAST FORWARD to present. The house was kept by its new owners and remains as one of the favorite tourist attractions in the area.
If you're lucky, you can also have a tour inside. The care taker mentioned the current owner collects antique items. Say for instance, the house has a collection of wooden corded phones.
Senator Jose Ozamiz' house

Jose Ozamiz House at Jimenez Misamis Occidental

Another house to see at Jimenez is the house of Senator Jose Ozamiz—the first Congressman,Governor, and the first and only Senator from the province.
From left: Jimenez' first casa,Convent of Maryknoll sisters. So here's something I don't usually see.Convents on those times are just like the average houses. The distinction is that the house has a cross on it. Not afar from the convent is the first casa in the town—Spanish term for house but is also associated as brothel.
2. St. John the Baptist Church
Built in the 19th century, the St.John the Baptist Church is one of the national culture treasures in the country. The Church houses a fully restored pipe organ and more than century old bells.

  3.   Shanghai Noodle House
For the foodie, don't forget to drop by  Shanghai Noodle House  and try their Ngo Hiong: variety of spring rolls or lumpia. For just 90 Php you can get to enjoy this traditional Chinese fried dish. What I like about this appetizer is that it is lightly salty and at the same time crunchy.
  4.  Largest Tree
Perhaps, this photo will remind you of some creepy scenes on movies. This is the largest tree in town at the public cemetery. I find it cool since I don't usually see this kind of stuff during my trips.

Yet visit with caution, I have a friend who told me that the "elements" living in the tree were not happy to see us. He was terror-stricken and wanted to go out of the cemetery.
We were then asked to do a ritual before going out of the cemetery since the locals believe that it will protect us upon leaving the cemetery.

5.  Baluno  Tree of Rizal and Shrine
Here is something you don't learn from school: a more than century old tree that was planted by our National Hero--Dr. Jose Rizal-- himself is an attraction here. Not so sure about the full account of this story but the locals said that Baluno is not a native tree in their hometown and Rizal was the one who brought it there.
6. Kamil Tree
Regarded by the locals that is something mystique, the Kamil tree facing the river is a must see place. I don't have a decent photo of the tree but here's a photo of the river.

Misamis Occidental: A Place Where Nature is Greener

Mount Malindang

Misamis Occidental is a province of the Philippines located in the Northern Mindanao region. Its capital is Oroquieta City. The province borders Zamboanga del Norte and Zamboanga del Sur to the west and is separated from Lanao del Norte by Panguil Bay to the south and from Misamis Oriental by Iligan Bay to the east. The province of Misamis was originally inhabited by Subanons who were easy targets of sea pirates from Lanao. Misamis is taken from the early settlement of the Spaniards at the entrance to the Panguil Bay.

The name "Misamis" is believed to have been derived from the Subano word "kuyamis," which is a variety of sweet coconut - the staple food of the early settlers in this place. During the years, the name persisted as an inference of the geographical location and upon the advent of the Spanish settlers.  The word "kuyamis" easily gave way to the more convenient pronounceable but corrupted word "Misamis."

Misamis Occidental comprised the original nine towns of Baliangao, Lopez Jaena, Tudela, Clarin, Plaridel, Oroquieta, Aloran, Jimenez, and Misamis. The original nine municipalities of the province of Misamis Occidental grew into the present three cities of Ozamiz, Oroquieta, and Tangub and the 14 municipalities of Aloran, Baliangao, Bonifacio, Calamba, Clarin, Concepcion, Don Victoriano, Jimenez, Lopez Jaena, Panaon, Plaridel, Sapang Dalaga, Sinacaban, and Tudela.

Brief History

In 1942, the Japanese Imperial forces landed in Misamis Occidental, beginning their brief occupation of the province as part of World War II. In 1945, combined American and Philippine Commonwealth forces liberated the province, and with the help of recognized guerrilla units defeated the Japanese forces.

Misamis Occidental is located near the narrow strip of land linking Northwestern Mindanao, to the Northcentral part of the island. Shaped like a collapsible fan it is bounded on the northeast by the Mindanao Sea, east by the Iligan Bay, Southeast by the Panguil Bay, and the west by the Zamboanga del Norte and Sur. The fact that three of its boundaries are bodies of water gives away water life as one of its natural resources and fishing as one of its main industries. Except along the coastal area, hilly and rolling land characterized the provincial terrain. Towards the western border, the terrain is particularly rugged.
