Youn Yuh Jung to Star in a New Variety Show by PD Na Young Suk + Lee Seo Jin Possibly to Join

Gear Up for the Comeback of Youn Yuh Jung in New Variety Show by PD Na Young Suk

As reported by various Korean news outlets on March 2, Youn Yuh Jung is set to make a variety show comeback soon. ‘Minari’ Youn Yuh Jung will work with PD Na Young Suk and possibly reunite with actor Lee Seo Jin.

In response to the report, a tvN official stated,

“PD Na Young Suk is planning a program with Yoon Yeo Jeong. Right now, it is in the early stages of planning, and details are yet to be decided. Lee Seo Jin’s appearance is also being discussed.” tvN official.

‘Unexpected Yuh Jung’

The variety show is expected to be named ‘Unexpected Journey’ or ‘Unexpected Yuh Jung.’ “Yuh Jung” refers to “journey” in Korean words. The upcoming program will be filmed in Los Angeles and directed by PD Na Young Suk and PD Shin Hyu Jeong.

However, the upcoming variety show will have a completely different format from previous variety shows that Youn Yuh Jung had. The new show will follow Youn Yuh Jung’s everyday life in Los Angeles.

Since there are no details yet about the forthcoming program, hopefully, we can watch the excitement of Youn Yuh Jung’s 2022 Oscars experience on her upcoming variety show.

According to the reports, to film the everyday life of ‘Pachinko’ actress Youn Yuh Jung, the cast and crew will leave for LA in mid-March, and the program is planning to premiere in May on tvN.

Youn Yuh Jung, First Korean Actress to Win Best Supporting Actress in Oscar History

Last year, veteran actress Youn Yuh Jung has captivated the world with her role of ‘grandma Soonja’ in the movie ‘Minari.’ With her extraordinary talent, she became the first actress from South Korea and the second actress in Asia who win an Oscar for the Best Supporting Actress .

She also won other prestigious awards like BAFTA Awards, SAG Awards, and Film Independent Spirit Awards.

Other Youn Yuh Jung’s Variety Shows with PD Na Young Suk and Lee Seo Jin

Previously, PD Na Young Suk and Youn Yuh Jung have worked in a variety show called “Sisters Over Flowers” in 2013. The variety show followed the journey of several celebrities in Europe, such as Youn Yuh Jung, Lee Seung Gi, Kim Hee Ae, Lee Yo Mi Yeon, and Kim Ja Ok in the show.

Moreover, PD Na, Youn Yuh Jung, and Lee Seo Jin have worked together in variety shows such as ‘Youn’s Kitchen’ and ‘Youn’s Stay.’

For ‘Youn’s Kitchen’ took place in Indonesia and Spain. In this program, Youn Yuh Jung worked with Lee Seo Jin, Lee Yu Mi, Shin Goo (in Bali), and Park Seo Joon (in Spain).

In ‘Youn’s Stay,’ Youn Yuh Jung ran a guest house with Lee Seo Jin, Jung Yo Mi, Park Seo Joon, and Choi Woo Shik.

Upcoming tvN Variety Show Will Follow Youn Yuh Jung’s Oscar Journey

Korea’s hottest variety show producer Na Young Seok , also known as Na PD, seems to have gotten himself, on all accounts, “Another one.”

The producer behind hit shows 1 Night 2 Days , New Journey To The West ,  Three Meals A Day,  and  Youn’s Kitchen , revealed his newest variety program— An Unexpected Journey  (translated title) which follows Oscar-winning actress Youn Yeo Jung and her journey to win her first  Academy Award .

On April 27, tvN uploaded the poster for the upcoming variety show on its Instagram, and fans are already loving it.

Particularly hilarious to viewers is the line in the upper left of the poster. Roughly translated as, “ Oh my, somehow I find myself doing this, hey~ ,” the text automatically conjoures the actress’s voice as it is written in her signature lovely tone.

Netizens on the online community Theqoo  wrote in the comments section how they could hear her voice from the texts and how much they are looking forward to the show.

The new tvN variety program, to air its first episode on May 8, details the intimate moments of the decorated actress, Youn Yuh Jung, receiving her Academy Award.

One of Korea’s most revered actors, Youn Yuh Jung, became the first Korean actress to win an Oscar when she won the 2021 Academy Award For Best Supporting Actress in a Supporting Role for her portrayal of Soon Ja in the movie Minari . The actress would win over 40 American film awards, including the SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Female Actor in a Supporting Role and the BAFTA Award for Best Actress in a Supporting Role.

The show is directed and produced by  Na Young Seok and Shin Hyo Jung. Also starring in the show is actor Lee Seo Jin, making Unexpected Journey  (translated title) the third variety show the two actors have starred in together.

tvN’s new entertainment show 'Unexpected Journey' stars Youn Yuh-jung after winning Oscar

SEOUL, Apr. 25 (Yonhap) – tvN announced on Apr. 25 that it will reveal a new entertainment program depicting the story of S. Korean Oscar-winning actress Youn Yuh-jung. “Unexpected Journey” will display the process of Youn Yuh-jung, who has become the first Korean actress to win an acting Oscar last year, becoming a presenter for the best supporting actor at the 94th Academy Awards held last month. The show is directed by television producers Na Young-seok and Shin Hyo-jung, and S. Korean actor Lee Seo-jin, who joined “Youn’s Kitchen” and “Youn’s Stay” as Youn’s manager, will be reunited in the program. Producer Shin said, “It will frankly show Youn in every aspect,” adding, “You will see another ‘unexpected journey’ through the daily life of a professional actress Youn Yuh-jung.” “Unexpected Journey” will be first aired on May 8 at 10:40 p.m. (This article is translated from Korean to English by Kim Sun Min.)

17 Most Entertaining Variety Shows Of 2021

There’s nothing quite like a good variety show to kickback and relax to. Often times, when you’ve ventured pretty deep into the K-drama world, you discover the world of variety shows, each of which takes on a very unique premise. 2021 had its fair share of returning series as well as new ones. Here are 17 of the most entertaining variety shows that the year had to offer!

List is in no particular order.

1. “Honeymoon Tavern”

“Honeymoon Tavern” is a tvN variety show produced by Lee Woo Hyung. The cast of celebrities, which includes  Kim Hee Sun , Tak Jae Hoon , Yoo Teo , Moon Se Yoon , and Kai , all ran an inn on Jeju Island. They were to cook for and host guests who came to the inn, most of which were newlyweds who got married during the pandemic. The series touched on the relationship between the cast and guests, while also learning more about the all-star celebrities that were hosting. It was especially fun to see the friendships that were formed amongst them!

2. “Street Woman Fighter”

“Street Woman Fighter” was a hot topic while it was airing. It was Mnet’s first female dance crew survival program. Various crews would compete in order to become the number one team to represent South Korea. They would showcase all different genres of dance. The choreography and remixes of various songs had people pumped up and excited every week. The different crews and individual dancers showed off their various charms, which made viewers fall in love with many of them throughout the process! The series was such a huge success that there is a male version of the show confirmed to air.

3. “The Sixth Sense 2”

“The Sixth Sense” returned with a second season after the success of the first in 2020. This tvN variety show brought cast members Yoo Jae Suk , Oh Na Ra , Jun So Min , Jessi , Loveleyz ‘s Mijoo , and Lee Sang Yeob . The cast would do various missions in different settings to figure out what is “fake” and what is “real.” One of the obvious reasons for the success of the show was the hilarious chemistry between the cast members. People couldn’t get enough of the hilarious banter between them. The guests on the show also proved to bring in a lot of viewers as they had EXO’s Kai, On Ju Wan , and even 2PM’s Lee Junho !

4. “The Game Caterers”

With millions of views on every uploaded video, it’s no secret that “The Game Caterers” was one of the most successful variety shows of the past year. With the power of PD (producing director)  Na Young Suk , who is a genius at coming up with unique games and quizzes, all the guests that are on the show are guaranteed to have a good time. Some of the very impressive guests in 2021 included BTS , the “Hospital Playlist” cast, the “Vincenzo” cast,” and the actors under BH Entertainment. With this kind of lineup, it’s no wonder that it was such a big success!

5. “Youn’s Stay”

“Youn’s Stay” is a spin-off of the show “ Youn’s Kitchen ,” produced by Na Young Suk and Kim Se Hee. The show focuses on welcoming guests visiting Korea on business or for studies who have not been able to experience Korea to the fullest as a result of the pandemic. The show is set in a hanok in the beautiful backdrop of South Jeolla Province. The cast of celebrities include Youn Yuh Jung , Choi Woo Shik , Jung Yu Mi , Lee Seo Jin , and Park Seo Joon . The show brought a very warm and relaxing vibe, which was especially welcoming during the winter season. Seeing the cast and their very different personalities work together to make this experience seamless for their guests was hilarious and enjoyable to watch.

6. “ Home Alone ”

In the MBC variety show “Home Alone,” viewers are provided with an in-depth look into the lives of various celebrities who live alone. There is a set cast of celebrities that are followed each week, and sometimes they have special guests where viewers are able to get a peek into how they live their daily lives. In 2021, the show had some pretty impressive special guests and returning ones, some of which included Junho, Anupam Tripathi, and Kim Kyung Nam . This look into the personal homes of various celebrities is fascinating but also entertaining as we are able to see the various quirks and hobbies that they have.

7. “ Ask Us Anything ”

“Ask Us Anything” is a program that features a cast of members who act as high school students in a classroom. Guests arrive and pretend that they are transferring to the school, but they must pass a test in order to be accepted by the cast. The show never fails in having some very impressive guests. 2021 brought some mega stars including Lee Seung Gi ,  Kai , aespa, 2PM,  ITZY , ASTRO , Brave Girls, SHINee , Joo Won , Yoon Eun Hye , and more! If you like to see a side of these idols and actors that you’ve never seen before, the cast of “Ask Us Anything” does a great job of bringing it out.

8. “ 2 Days & 1 Night Season 4 ”

There aren’t that many people who are not familiar with the variety show “2 Days & 1 Night.” The show involves a fixed cast who venture off into various parts of South Korea where they are to complete games and missions. With the show having had a complete change in the cast not too long ago, it did an amazing job of maintaining its popularity and ratings. “2 Days & 1 Night Season 4” won the Viewers’ Choice for Best Program at the 2021 KBS Entertainment Awards, and Moon Se Yoon was even able to win the Daesang (Grand Prize) !

9. “ Running Man ”

It’s impressive how long “Running Man” has been airing. With the veteran cast members returning every week to make their viewers laugh, the series deserves a spot on this list every year. There were some major changes in 2021 for the program as Lee Kwang Soo decided to step away, but the show has managed to remain as one of the most watched variety shows in South Korea. The variety show lineup is definitely not the same without it!

10. “ Kingdom: Legendary War ”

Mnet’s idol competition show featured six idol groups including  THE BOYZ , Stray Kids , ATEEZ , BTOB , SF9 , and iKON . They went head-to-head in various challenges throughout four weeks while receiving votes from global fans, being evaluated by a panel, and a video view count. At the end of the show, the group with the most points would win it all. The hot and sizzling performances from some of the most popular K-pop groups out there had us on the edge of our seats every week. Seeing the creativity and hard work that went into each performance really made us appreciate our favorite idols even more.

11. “ How Do You Play? ”

“How Do You Play?” is a variety show hosted by the nation’s MC, Yoo Jae Suk. 2021 was a huge year for the host and this variety show, as he was able to top the charts for Variety Star Brand Reputation Rankings continuously. Most of this was due to the success of his program “How Do You Play?” on MBC. One segment in particular was the formation of the group MSG Wannabe as Yoo Jae Suk gathered various actors and singers to become a singing group. The group was able to score a perfect all-kill when their song was released – the power of Yoo Jae Suk!

12. “ The Return Of Superman ”

“The Return Of Superman” is a series that follows celebrity parents who are raising children. It’s adorable seeing these celebrity parents living normal lives, taking care of household chores and running errands while looking after their kids. Many familiar families announced their departure in the series during 2021 like Do Kyung Wan and Sam Hammington . But with these departures, there were also many guests who visited the families and played with their children. Some of these guests included ASTRO’s Cha Eun Woo and Lee Junho.

13. “ Master in the House ”

“Master in the House” has set cast members Yoo Su Bin , Lee Seung Gi, Yang Se Hyung , and Kim Dong Hyun . Cha Eun Woo and Shin Sung Rok were part of the cast, but they stepped down halfway through the year. The show involves having a “master” host the cast, taking them through a day or two of how they live. Some of the masters from 2021 included Rain , Kim Jong Kook , and the female leads of the K-drama “ The Penthouse .” Viewers are able to see the hard work that these “masters” live through day-to-day in order to maintain their special skills.

14. “You Quiz On The Block”

“You Quiz On The Block” is a tvN program starring Yoo Jae Suk and Jo Se Ho . The show is in an interview type format where the hosts sit down and chat with stars who are currently hot and trending. In 2021 alone, they had international sensation group BTS, “Squid Game” star Jung Ho Yeon, IU , Girls’ Generation , and Gong Yoo ! The best part about this show is that Yoo Jae Suk has a way with his guests that make them feel very comfortable. Because he is the nation’s MC, many celebrities respect and look up to him, which makes them very open to his questions. You can sense the guests’ comfort, which also makes viewers comfortable.

15. “Mountain Village Playlist”

As a result of the success of “Hospital Playlist,” Na Young Suk created a spin-off program similar to the format of “Three Meals a Day.” The cast of “Hospital Playlist,” which includes Jo Jung Suk , Jeon Mi Do , Jung Kyung Ho , Yoo Yeon Seok , and Kim Dae Myung , all participated in the show. They were to spend time together in the countryside and cook three meals a day without any assistance. The series was especially delightful to watch as Jo In Sung hardly ever appears in variety shows. Cha Tae Hyun invited him to be on the show together as the two are good friends in real life. Seeing the natural relationship between these two in a very stressful situation was hilarious but also healing for the most part.

17. “My Little Old Boy”

“ My Little Old Boy ” looks into the lives of older single Korean celebrities. What makes this show so unique is that the mothers of these single celebrities are on the panel, providing commentary to their own children. 2021 was a big year for the program as it garnered a lot more viewers and fans. Guests such as BLACKPINK ‘s Rosé, SHINee’s Minho ,  Lee Da Hee , CL , Ahn Hyo Seop , Lee Kwang Soo, and Seo In Guk were just some of the many all-star guests who graced the studio!

From the small and big details of operating the store, they will provide food, sell goods, organize inventories, communicate deliveries and more. A small place that gives comfort and material things people need, the two friends are all set for personal memories they can also look back fondly of.

Clarifying his tag of being a good cook, Jo In Sung said he normally cooked for his friends and juniors so he does not feel pressured of what to cook. He also revealed how he goes to old town inns when he’s on break. With the owner unaware of who he is, he enjoyed the conversations and interaction.

An Unexpected Gift To A Hardworking Store Owner

It might come as a surprise, but apart from the entertainment value Unexpected Business promises to gift, its launch episode also gave a heartwarming story. Relieving a grandmother who has been managing her store for years, the 10-day store owners were given a letter and a few instructions to guide them in keeping up with the store management.

Expressing gratefulness for giving her a time off, she relayed it’s the first time that she will be gone for quite a long time. Her instructions are detailed and at the same time encouraging to anyone who makes a living.  She also stressed that the two should not forget having a breakfast because they need strength for a long day.

She gave a piece of advice how breakfast brightens mood up which makes customers feel comfortable at the store. Additionally, she left such a meaningful message on her devotion to the life she lives in the store that she owned.

“If I can provide a person something he needs, I feel good. If I have to say, ‘I don’t have it’, then I feel sorry. Regardless of the good or the bad, I live on believing that this is what I was destined to do.”

Part-timer Recruitment

Exploring the store they thought to be small, Cha Tae Hyun and Jo In Sung have foreseen their future 10 days to be a cute chaos. The show also teased with how Jo In Sung and Cha Tae Hyun tapped on their close juniors to be part-timers. Previously, a slew of celebrity guests were also introduced.

In the premiere episode, Park Bo Young is announced to be the first part-time worker with her close relationship with “Scandal Makers dad” Cha Tae Hyun. Going extra mile for fresh store supply, Jo In Sung invited his “Ansi Fortress junior” Nam Joo Hyuk to appear in the show.

A stunning winter wonderland greeted them and they stumbled on a frozen river. Cha Tae Hyun didn’t miss the chance teasing his friend of how the place should have been visited by him with a girl. Obviously a scenic vista not to pass on, the two bask on taking pictures. Marking that sweet spot as a place they will recommend to customers for sightseeing.

Coming prepared to assume his chef role, Jo In Sung has arranged seafood supply with a friend. They start on preparing it for the “snow crab ramyeon” menu, and is bewildered on why it’s taking a while to see the bottom of the container.

Cha Tae Hyun also showed off his skills in preparing crabs and narrated how he has always sacrificed for his wife and kids in eating the meaty part.

Unexpected Business definitely flashed a neon “you’re welcome sign” with that Jo In Sung frame of preparing breakfast. His adoring fans can freely imagine their future with him in the scene where he prepared breakfast, took care of the dog and moved freely carrying his just-woke-up-looking-handsome self.

Cha Tae Hyun’s Store-Alone Sweet Chaos

From selling bus tickets, regular groceries and even maggots for fishing; it was quite amusing to see the two remarkable actors grope their way to complete the store tasks.

When Jo In Sung went out to buy store ingredients at the big mart, Cha Tae Hyun seemingly entered a war zone. Customers poured in and knowing about the two newbie owners, they obligingly help out not to be a burden to the already busy owner.

An adorable grandpa even made life easier for him by making the computation simple, scanning and recording his temperature and waiting patiently to communicate the maggots he previously ordered for his fishing.

Likewise, an ajumma who tends the store when grandma goes to church, also gave tips to the actor like how to run the bun steamer and keep coins above the coffee vending machine. Other townspeople also made life easier by coaching him the ins and outs of the store.

Jo In Sung’s Kitchen Trouble

Settling well with their newfound knowledge, the two actors brood on the quick lull they experience. But then a slew of customers came in for food which made Chef Jo busy. Earlier, they had strategized using three pots depending on the serving size. However, one of the burner malfunctioned so the order of serving the dish inevitably will be altered.

South Korean dominance shows no signs of stopping, delivering even more outrageous storylines.

In SLL’s “Death’s Game,” a Prime Video Original fantasy drama based on a webtoon, a hard-working man – “who knows how to make lemonade out of the lemons,” said sales executive Youseon Jee at Series Mania – finally reaches his breaking point. 

When he loses his home and his girlfriend, he decides to take his own life. Only to find himself in hell, literally facing Death, who presents him with 12 different lives, each facing a tragic end. If he manages to save at least one, he will be forgiven for his deed. 

“It’s definitely one of a kind. While K Content is known for its heart-warming, romcom-based series, we proudly call ourselves the mastermind of crime and mystery series,” said marketing and brand executive Allen Kim, also mentioning “Flower of Evil” where a woman starts to suspect her husband is a serial killer – the first ever K drama to be remade in India.

In a show under working title “Mudang,” Astory’s 20th anniversary tentpole project described as “hardcore action with a hint of shamanism,” in 2058, an elite combatant strives to uncover secrets related to the ‘unification’ of Korea. 

As revealed during the content showcase organized by Kocca, the company will also thrill with “Crash,” soon to be released on Disney+ and boasting the title of the first procedural about traffic-related crimes, and move with “The Kidnapping Day” – another unusual story, in which a genius child teams up with an especially clumsy kidnapper. A U.K. remake with SHUK (Studio Hamburg UK) is already in the works. 

Webtoons are also a force to be reckoned with. Starting from Astory’s adaptation of “No Home,” currently in pre-production and about a group of kids finding refuge in an abandoned home, to the slate of Kakao Entertainment: the largest webtoon studio in the country, also delivering the world’s first webtoon platform. 

“Uncanny Counter” about “supernatural battles,” “Itaewon Class” – with Chinese and Taiwanese versions currently in production – “Business Proposal” and “The Drifting Brig,” set in the dystopian future where inmates are sent to a floating prison, are all around the corner, teased Jae-heon (Jake) Hwang. 

But while supernatural elements are aplenty, so is romance and, to quote Pitbull, international love. 

Raemongraein bets on French-Korean relationships in “Wedding Diary,” “The Era of Desire” and “Lee Jin.” In development, the latter focuses on the story of a 19 th  century dancer who fell for French consul Victor Collin de Plancy, only to become a foreigner in her own country.

Things will significantly heat up in “intense melodrama” “The Era of Desire,” where a French couple develops feelings for the same man in 1960s Korea, while in “Wedding Diary,” a French-Korean couple tries to plan their big day despite massive cultural differences and rifts in their families. 

“Our company’s name means a comforting place for dreams and people to stay. We believe that great content has the power to transform lives,” said executive producer Hee-kyoung Yun.

Finally, in CJ ENM’s latest offerings “LTNS,” selected for Busan, a sexless married couple starts blackmailing those who stray into adultery. It aired on TVING. 

“This title has everything global fans will love so much,” assured Allen Kim, also opening up about an unusual romcom “Lovely Runner” – set to air in South Korea on tvN – in which a woman finds out that her beloved A-lister has tragically died. She then wakes up 13 years earlier – when there is still time to save him.

“So cute, isn’t it? Keep an eye on it.”
