New ongoing series from IDW to debut in October!

IDW is proud to announce a bold new direction in Star Trek comics, beginning with a brand-new flagship ongoing series that goes where no one has gone before! Debuting in October 2022, STAR TREK #1 features art by Ramon Rosanas ( Marvel’s Star Wars, Ant-Man ), and scripts by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing , the creative team behind Star Trek: Year Five .

STAR TREK #1 weaves an epic and unprecedented adventure story that spans the far reaches of the Star Trek multiverse, bringing together characters from across the galaxy — and all eras and variations of the beloved franchise — who must band together to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods.

Its stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus , he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

STAR TREK #1 - Sisko character design by Ramon Rosanas

“As a child, I watched reruns of the classic Star Trek series endlessly – until Next Generation, Voyager , and Deep Space Nine came along!” Rosanas enthuses. “After that, I didn’t miss a single episode of those three series’ each week. Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me.”

“Benjamin Sisko is back!” Lanzing says. “We’re immeasurably thrilled to launch a new starship with a crew of new and familiar faces heading on a mission that will truly go where no one has gone before — an Avengers -style ongoing crossover that treats Gene Roddenberry’s creation as a living universe. This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible.”

“Dreams of an optimistic, utopian future of cooperation and equality are more important now than ever,” says Kelly. “We’re both excited to continue the stories that have meant so much to us in the past and to welcome new readers to Starfleet. This is a grand adventure, one that weaves together elements from every Star Trek series to tell a new, vital, and forward-thinking sci-fi saga.”

“ Star Trek has always been about telling stories of a better future,” says editor Heather Antos, “of hope for humanity. Something this world needs now more than ever before. And what Jackson, Collin, and Ramon are doing with this series is bigger. Bigger and bolder than any Star Trek series has gone before.”

STAR TREK #1 will be available in October with eight variant covers for fans and retailers to enjoy, including Cover A by series artist Ramon Rosanas, Cover B by Declan Shalvey, Cover C by David Aja (TBC), Cover D by Rachael Stott, and a sketch Cover E, as well as three additional retailer incentive covers by Rosanas and Francesco Francavilla. Fans will also be delighted to read a STAR TREK #1 prelude story from Rosanas, Kelly, and Lanzing in September’s highly-anticipated STAR TREK #400 , a monumental anthology issue!

As with many of the previous tie-in comics connected to the modern Star Trek era, the Stagazer miniseries is written by longtime collaborators Mike Johnson & Picard co-creator Kirsten Beyer, with art by Angel Hernandez.

Captain Pike’s crew joins the comic adventures this winter in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds — The Illyrian Enigma , a tale set between the show’s first and forthcoming second season.

Like the Stargazer series, this new comic story is also written by Mike Johnson and Kirsten Beyer, with art by Megan Levens.

Here’s the synopsis for The Illyrian Enigma #1, coming in December:

With Una accused of unlawful genetic modification by Starfleet, Captain Pike sets out in search of evidence that could prove his first officer’s innocence.

Finally, IDW’s next monthly Star Trek series kicks off this October with Star Trek #1 , a new ongoing tale centered around Benjamin Sisko — after he’s returned from the Bajoran Wormhole — who must bring together characters from many eras of the Trek saga for his mission.

Written by Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly (who helmed the recently-concluded Star Trek: Year Five series) with art by Ramon Rosanas, this new monthly comic — which is the start of a massive new comic-based continuity.

star trek comic new

As IDW Publishing’s marketing director Keith Davidson puts it:

It’s the biggest initiative that IDW has ever undertaken for the brand in its now-14 years of Star Trek publication. Essentially, our new Star Trek series is creating a new ongoing IDW continuity, from which we will build offshoots, spin-offs, and epic events for years to come. Benjamin Sisko takes the helm of the Enterprise, supported by a crew of characters pulled quite literally from throughout Star Trek canon — even from The Original Series! Part of the fun will be seeing how the diverse personalities mesh or clash. Honestly, we’re hoping to channel with Star Trek what Marvel did when they launched their Star Wars comics a few years back — respecting the canon that came before while building a new universe for fans that’s wholly unique, unexpected, and accessible.

Writer Jackson Lanzing called the new Star Trek monthly “a Deep Space Nine sequel” on social media this week, and in a lengthy new interview with ComicBook.com, described the tale as one which fits into a neat year-and-a-half of time which no on-screen Star Trek production has yet touched: the era between Voyager’s return home and the events of Star Trek: Nemesis.

star trek comic new

As writer Collin Kelly described it to ComicBook.com:

They’re giving us a lot of access to all the toys, with the understanding that at the end of it, we will put the toys back in the box. There is about a year and a half here of Star Trek timeline that is untouched, and within this, we can make all sorts of trouble as long as we put the characters that need to be back in the box for Nemesis.

Lanzing also talked about how this new storyline will be canon — until it’s not.

This is as close as we can, on the comic side, to being canon. We will be canon until they un-canonize us. But we are working with the shows. We are in communication with the teams… We’re taking this as an opportunity to effectively fill [the space formerly occupied by the Trek novel continuity], because a lot of that stuff was created with the understanding there would never be shows again. [But] now we know that there will be, so we are trying to create new canon that exists inside that space. But these are the characters you know. This is the canonical Benjamin Sisko sequel story. This is the last ride of Data before Nemesis. These are those stories. This is what happened to Tom Paris after he came back from Voyager.

star trek comic new

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek #1 — coming in October — where Captain Sisko is joined on his mission by first officer Data, medical officer Dr. Beverly Crusher, pilot Tom Paris, and new characters as well.

It’s stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek #2, coming in November:

Tasked with a mission from the Prophets, Benjamin Sisko enlists the help of an old friend from Qo’noS to track the ship and persons responsible for slaying the gods.
My design of the USS Theseus for the new STAR TREK comic series. I hope you like it. pic.twitter.com/xXt6LSkLpb — Ramon Rosanas (@RamonRosanas) September 8, 2022

Here’s the official synopsis for Star Trek #3, coming in December:

When strange malfunctions begin plaguing the U.S.S. Theseus mid-warp, Benjamin Sisko and his crew must band together to unveil the source behind the mysterious phenomena aboard the ship. But what initially appear as mere technological quagmires and strange happenings become a test that will determine the very fate of the universe.

IDW Announces New Star Trek: Discovery Miniseries with ‘Adventures in the 32nd Century’

star trek comic new

Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century , a new comic book miniseries, coming from IDW Publishing

After leaving this timeline and warping far into the void for over three years, the crew of the U.S.S. Discovery returns to comics with a brand new miniseries. IDW has announced the launch of Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century , a four-issue series that will delve deeper into the lives of some of the lesser-explored members of the Discovery crew — beginning with the majestic feline, Grudge.

Co-writers Kirsten Beyer and Mike Johnson , who penned previous Star Trek: Discovery comic book series from IDW — including Light Of Kahless , Succession , and Aftermath , are returning for Adventures in the 32nd Century . Each issue, drawn by veteran artist Angel Hernandez , will be a one-shot and will focus on a myriad of characters, including Grudge, Ensign Adira Tal, Lieutenant Keyla Detmer, and Science Officer Linus.

The first issue of the new series will be available with two cover variants for retailers and fans to enjoy — Cover A by interior artist Angel Hernandez and a Retailer Incentive edition by Aaron Harvey .

Teaser image for issue one of Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century

“Discovery’s arrival in the 32nd century opens up a whole new universe of adventure for the crew, from the feline to the Saurian. It’s a blast telling stories eight hundred years in the future of Star Trek , where we really have never been before, exploring different facets of their lives,” says Johnson.

Johnson, Beyer, and Hernandez are among the cream of the crop of Star Trek comic creators. Mike Johnson’s resume predates the 2009 Star Trek reboot film, for which he wrote the prequel comic Star Trek: Countdown . Angel Hernandez’s experience dates back even further. He drew Star Trek comics for IDW well before the cinematic relaunch. Kirsten Beyer is one of the founders of the new landscape of Trek shows. She was one of the writers on season one of Discovery and is also considered a co-creator of the Star Trek: Picard series.

Teaser image for issue one of Star Trek: Discovery - Adventures in the 32nd Century

“It’s no secret that Star Trek: Discovery ’s television series has an amazing cast of characters, and being able to translate those characters and their stories into the comics is a real treat for not only the fans but also us as well,” says editor Heather Antos. “Diving deeper into Queen Grudge’s mind, to Adira’s relationship with Gray and more, Star Trek: Discovery – Adventures in the 32nd Century gives readers an incredibly detailed perspective of these fan-favorite characters.”

There is no word on a release date yet or how this coincides with the announcement of the other series of one-shots coming in 2022 , beginning with Star Trek: Klingons in February. I sincerely hope and pray to Kahless that Antos, the editor behind both these miniseries, is also working on a longer series that would tell an overarching story like the brilliant Star Trek: Year Five .

Benjamin Sisko is back!

IDW has announced a new era of the Star Trek comics with the debut of Star Trek #1 during San Diego Comic Con. Debuting in October, the comic features art by critically acclaimed Ramon Rosanas ( Marvel’s Star Wars, Ant-Man ), and scripts by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing , the creative minds behind Star Trek: Year Five .

Star Trek #1 weaves an epic and unprecedented adventure story that spans the far reaches of the Star Trek universe. It brings together characters from across the galaxy and across eras and variations of the beloved franchise—who must band together to prevent the mysterious murder of the gods. “Benjamin Sisko is back!” Lanzing said, adding,

We’re immeasurably thrilled to launch a new starship with a crew of new and familiar faces heading on a mission that will truly go where no one has gone before—an Avengers-style ongoing crossover that treats Gene Roddenberry ’s creation as a living universe. This is a book where anyone can show up and where anything is possible.

The comic is set in 2378, where Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus. Sisko witnesses the unthinkable, someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of Trek can stop them.

“As a child, I watched reruns of the classic Star Trek series endlessly–until Next Generation , Voyager , and Deep Space Nine came along!” Rosanas revealed. The scribe further shared his excitement saying, “Gene Roddenberry is History with a capital H and his legacy is unstoppable. Having an opportunity to bring my passion and creativity to this franchise is incredibly exciting for me.”

Furthermore, a Star Trek #1 prelude story from Rosanas, Kelly, and Lanzing will come out in September’s highly-anticipated Star Trek #400 , a monumental anthology issue!

Elaborating on the themes of the new comic Kelly said, “Dreams of an optimistic, utopian future of cooperation and equality are more important now than ever.” Further adding, “We’re both excited to continue the stories that have meant so much to us in the past and to welcome new readers to Starfleet. This is a grand adventure, one that weaves together elements from every Star Trek series to tell a new, vital, and forward-thinking sci-fi saga.” Editor Heather Antos added ,

Star Trek has always been about telling stories of a better future, of hope for humanity. Something this world needs now more than ever before. And what Jackson, Collin, and Ramon are doing with this series is bigger. Bigger and bolder than any Star Trek series has gone before.

Interview: ‘Star Trek’ Comic Writers Preview Sisko’s Return To Lead All-Star Team On A Mission From Gods

IDW is about to kick off a new ongoing Star Trek comic series that will see the return of Deep Space Nine’s Benjamin Sisko. The new series is written by Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing, the leads behind IDW’s Star Trek: Year Five series, with art by Ramon Rosanas (Marvel’s Star Wars , Ant-Man ) and a wide collection of artists for additional covers. This ambitious new title promises a “bold new direction in Star Trek comics” and IDW is so enthused with it, they have already announced a spin-off series led by Worf , coming in early 2023.

Set in the time between the end of DS9 and Star Trek: Nemesis , the new ongoing Star Trek series promises to bring in characters from across the franchise. Sisko’s mission upon returning from the wormhole is to stop someone who is “killing the gods.” Starfleet gives him a new ship—the USS Theseus—and his crew includes new characters and familiar faces like Dr. Beverly Crusher and Data.

TrekMovie spoke to authors Collin Kelly and Jackson Lanzing about the title to better understand what is in store.

Making an Avengers for Star Trek

The idea for this series actually predates Kelly and Lanzing’s work on Year Five to their first pitch to IDW—where the longtime fans arrived with Stellar Cartography maps and their own personal Star Trek figures—presenting an idea set in the TNG movie era that featured Jean-Luc Picard as the main character, but the project got shelved after CBS decided to launch Star Trek: Picard . Even as they moved on to work on the TOS -era Year Five series, the pair kept thinking about “returning back to TNG , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager , and specifically in that era after Voyager returns and just before Nemesis , where everyone is around and you do something as long as you put all the toys back in the box,” says Lanzing.

Given another chance to pitch after Year Five wrapped up, they dusted off their maps and figures and pitched what became a new Star Trek series which could span the different eras, as described by Lanzing:

We started talking about how we could take that same energy of using a character from TNG , a character from DS9 , a character from Voyager , a character with legacy calls to Enterprise , a character with future legacy calls to Discovery , characters that let us touch old Star Trek and new Star Trek from Lower Decks to TOS across the board. What would it look like for us to take that Star Trek and launch it as a single book? Treat the Star Trek Universe like the Marvel Universe and put together the Avengers.

The pair makes it clear they want to stick to the Prime Universe and have no plans to do any time travel. The series is not limited to a given number of issues, their only real limitation being the setting. Kelly explains:

The limit in this book, truthfully, has to do with the period in which it’s being in which it’s taking place. So as long as the book only takes place within that year and a half [before Nemesis ] it can be 50 issues, 100 issues… We’re able to flex the timeline to tell as many stories as you want within that space… It’s one of the cool things that comics gets to do in general. Time in comics is such a fun thing. How much time passes between a panel, how much time passes between an issue, these are mutable things that allow us all to work at that time.

Fulfilling Sisko’s promise to return… but with “wormhole withdrawal”

Having Benjamin Sisko lead this new series was personal for these writers. Lanzing reveals Sisko is his favorite captain and DS9’s exploration of religion helped him “reconcile what it meant to live inside of religious societies but have pluralist scientific and rationalist beliefs.” He sees the conflict that Sisko represents as being a core Star Trek story that he wants to continue to explore in this new series. And the writers also feel they are fulfilling a promise, as Lanzing explains:

I think it’s always been really clear that when Sisko went into the wormhole, Avery Brooks famously made them add the line about “I’ll be back,” because he didn’t want to abandon his son. He really felt like that was like a bad look for the first black Starfleet captain to be like, “Oh, I’m going to just leave my son.” So when he made that point, it always felt like at some point, you need to show that. You need to get back to that moment.

Kelly adds:

He is the one captain with unfinished business very much. And like that was something that we really wanted to unpack. Janeway is getting her second run in Prodigy , which is wonderful and great; it’s time for Sisko to get some get that love. And he still has so much story to tell, and we absolutely need to unpack it.

The series has Sisko returning with a mission given to him by the Prophets. While joining the Prophets made Sisko a god, having an omnipotent character doesn’t make for good storytelling. Kelly explains how they deal with this in the Star Trek series:

The story is going to start with him coming back from the wormhole. And The Prophets have a specific task for him. And what you’ll slowly discover is it is a human task. He needs to very specifically approach this not as a god but as a man, which is why they’ve sent their Emissary. So narratively it’s going to work. But yes, you cannot have a god-level character at the center of your book.

Lanzing calls this process “wormhole withdrawal,” explaining how it informs Sisko’s arc:

From the minute that he exits to the wormhole, Sisko starts to lose godhood. And every minute that passes, his omniscience is fading. And as that withdrawal extends, and goes farther and farther, you’re going to see a Sisko become more and more human, to his own frustration. And that’s a big part of why we picked him as the protagonist as it is an exciting journey to take a character on. “I reached full apotheosis. I reached Nirvana. And now to save the galaxy, that has been taken from me. And I have to instead find my own way of living forward and engage with my humanity again.”

Assembling Sisko’s crew and connecting to new Star Trek

Benjamin Sisko will not be alone on this journey. The comic series includes many familiar faces, including Jean-Luc Picard, who has some oversight over the mission. Sisko is given a new ship, the USS Theseus, which has a connection going back to the Star Trek: Year Five series . Lanzing describes the ship and mission:

The Theseus is not the flagship of the fleet. The Theseus is a weird hodgepodge ragtag science experiments of a ship that Starfleet effectively hands to Sisko because they need to give him something to complete his mission, but they’re really not sure that they understand his mission or totally like working for The Prophets in this way. Like, this is not a Starfleet mission. This is a mission from The Prophets and Starfleet is just enabling Sisko to do it.

Kelly describes Sisko’s crew:

The objective here is not ‘Sisko and His Amazing Friends.’ The objective here is a Star Trek crew that works as well as the TNG crew or the Deep Space Nine crew or the Voyager crew or the TOS crew. They just happen to be made up of characters from a bunch of other series and some new characters as well.

Data is the ship’s first officer. Beverly Crusher is the ship’s doctor, who is also keeping an eye on Sisko for Starfleet, who isn’t sure what to make of him. There are other legacy characters on board as well, including Tom Paris as the helmsman. There are some new characters, including Lilly Sato the communications officer, who is a half-Andorian descendant of Hoshi Sato from Star Trek: Enterprise , and she struggles to meet those high expectations. And T’Lir, a non-binary Vulcan science officer.

With multiple current original Star Trek shows on Paramount+ set in or around the same era, it is important for the comic book team to ensure they remain consistent. Kelly explains, “We know what’s going on, and we are kept abreast so that everything fits together in one good continuity.” This will include incorporating characters from the new shows as well. As an example, Lanzing explains how this works with Lower Decks :

We’re talking to [ Lower Decks showrunner] Mike [McMahan] quite a bit, he’s been an invaluable resource in terms of helping us understand how to connect certain things that we’re doing to Lower Decks , and that’s going to be a little bit clearer as we move forward. We’re really distinct because we’re playing in such a different tone than Lower Decks . This book is pretty serious. It’s pretty epic-oriented. It’s a little psychedelic. But I think the thing that’s fun about it is that when we do get to take in any character from Lower Decks , seeing them within a serious context is going to be really fun because it brings out very different things.

Kelly also made it clear that even with all of these connections, nostalgia isn’t the goal of the new comic:

We really don’t want this to be kind of a nostalgia redux. We all love so much of this world, and you want to visit everywhere, but Star Trek isn’t about looking backwards. It’s about looking forwards and discovering what’s new and over the horizon. So it’s really important for us to create new stuff as well.

Giving all fans a reason to read the comics

While Star Trek comics have been around almost as long as the franchise itself, not all fans read them. But as noted before, IDW feels this new series can break through. Lanzing talked about how he feels the new Star Trek comics can be a gateway for fans to get into the comics:

If you’re a big Star Trek fan, if you love Star Trek , if you are reading TrekMovie.com, then most likely, you’re going to be interested in the kind of stories that are being told in the Star Trek comic book. These stories are—as far as we can keep them—fully canon. They’re going to reflect ideally to the shows and back to the comics. We’re going to be doing something here on a longer-term basis that ideally feels vital and feels specific and feels like a worthy follow up to some of the greatest television shows of all time, we hope. And if the medium is what’s stopping you from getting in on those stories, you just haven’t found how good the medium can be. Star Trek at this point is just a huge and diverse line of not just series or timelines, but characters. And getting to use any and all of them in a big mix and match grab-bag Avengers book is a dream come true for us as creators, and certainly would be a dream come true for us as Star Trek fans. So I really hope that the fans dig in, find that character that they’re really excited about, and start to follow that story.

Kelly is a bit more direct, simply saying:

If you’re a Trek fan, and you see a cover that has Sisko, Data, and Beverly Crusher on it, how can you not get excited? Get on board!

If I missed it, I’ll apologize, but I’d be curious if this has Avery Brooks blessing? Or was he even consulted?

Why would they need his blessing? Why would he need to be consulted? That’s not how licensing works. If you’re referring to the use of his likeness, he has allowed that since the show was on the air, which is why Sisko has appeared on many book covers and in many comics. This is just the latest licensed property to feature the character, which is owned by CBS, not Avery Brooks. So I’m not sure I understand the question. Avery Brooks has no say at all in what happens to Sisko.

Why on Bajor would anyone ever need to do that for a comic book?

Exactly. There are close to a thousand Star Trek comic books, and more than 400 from IDW alone. If they didn’t need to consult the actors or get their blessing on the other 999, would they need to on this one? Plus, did they get blessings or consultations for this issue from Brent Spiner? Patrick Stewart? Robert Duncan McNeill? Gates McFadden? Cirroc Lofton? Of course not, since that’s not how licensing works. :)

Well, I suppose if we are all going to pretend that Patrick Stewart and Kate Mulgrew don’t have discussions on the creation of content for their respective characters, you all may have a point. However, we know those discussions occur, even if it is just a courtesy. For all the chatter about wanting to see Mr. Brooks back, and because he clearly is sensitive to proper and correct perceptions of Benjamin Sisko, anything that lessens the character reduces the likelihood of him returning. I’d not be so caviler about not wanting to have his input, as a fan of the character and Mr. Brooks work.

The objective here is not ‘Sisko and His Amazing Friends.’ The objective here is a Star Trek crew that works as well as the TNG crew or the Deep Space Nine crew or the Voyager crew or the TOS crew. They just happen to be made up of characters from a bunch of other series, and some new characters as well.

Someone’s heard the criticism of PIC. ;) But, in all seriousness, very good interview. I already had the series on preorder, but this has given me a little anticipation spike.

I know this is a tiny point, but cripes, yet another uniform variation? Just stop it! :-)

It’s true. And they are ALL really derivative of the TNG uniforms. Like, try something dramatically different, if you’re going with something different. I do like them putting the doctor in white though.

I don’t bother with Trek comics very much, but I might give this a try. The creators are kidding themselves if they think these are canon, however. But I’m not going to go down that road. When Trek fans start arguing about canon I invariably want to fire people out of one.

In my personal opinion, the idea of whether or not something is canon is meaningless. Fans (and this isn’t directed at you–it’s a generalization) spend far too much time obsessing over that, yet it doesn’t matter. (Mods: I say that with no gatekeeping intended. Fans are free of course to focus on canon if they wish to, and it doesn’t make them any less fans than those who don’t. I just personally think it misses the point.) That endless argument started in the 1990s, with the rise of the Internet. Before that, fans either enjoyed stories or they didn’t. All this obsession over whether or not things carry the “canon” label has, in my opinion, seriously hurt pretty much every fandom. Licensed stories are, by definition, not canon since TV and film writers are free to ignore them. Lanzing and Kelly are very good writers, but I wish Lanzing hadn’t perpetuated this pointless argument by falsely claiming the comics are canon. If Avery Brooks agreed to come back tomorrow, it’s a guarantee that his show would ignore this comic, just like PICARD ignored Countdown. That, by definition, means it’s not part of the imaginary pointlessness known as canon. What matters to me isn’t whether or not Countdown or Lanzing’s series are canon, but whether or not they’re good reads. Countdown is, and this looks like it will be too.

I’m excited to read this. But really, I just want to see Avery Brooks act again. His tenderness with Jake and the love he showed as a father gets me every damn time as a father myself

Read it. Hated it. Dislike this Avengers team up approach. I’ll wait for Sisko’s real return on TV. This doesn’t count.

was pleasantly surprised a certain TOS character appeared in this story

As Sisko returns in IDW's new flagship 'Star Trek' series, writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly weigh in (exclusive)

Benjamin Sisko is back from the Bajoran wormhole to save the galaxy from deadly god killers in IDW's Trektastic new series.

Star Trek #2

Accomplished comic book writers Jackson Lanzing and Collin Kelly ("Star Trek: Year Five," "Captain America: Sentinel of Liberty") are relishing their dream job of crafting compelling stories within the legendary sci-fi franchise for IDW Publishing's new "Star Trek" series starring "Deep Space Nine's" Commander Benjamin Lafayette Sisko.

Joining the veteran pair on this creative " Star Trek " odyssey is artist Ramon Rosanas (Marvel's "Star Wars,") and colorist Lee Loughridge ("The Batman Chronicles," "Deadly Class") in a planet-hopping mystery to discover why the cosmic gods are being murdered.

You can get issue 1 of the relaunched "Star Trek" from IDW for just $1.99 at Amazon for Kindle.

Star Trek comic cover art with Sisko, Beverly Crusher and Data.

Here’s the official synopsis:

"It's Stardate 2378, and Benjamin Sisko has finally returned from the Bajoran Wormhole omnipotent. But his godhood is failing with every minute. Sent by the Prophets on a mission to the deepest parts of space aboard the U.S.S. Theseus, he witnesses the unthinkable: Someone is killing the gods. And only Sisko and his motley crew of Starfleet members from every era of 'Trek' can stop them."

"Star Trek #1" landed on Oct. 26 and the second issue of this remastered "Star Trek" project featuring familiar characters pulled from all corners of the canon arrived today, Nov. 30, as "Star Trek: #2." Space.com chatted at length with its eager architects, Lanzing and Kelly, about their bold plans moving forward at warp speed and what inspired them to tackle this Sisko-centric series from IDW.

"We are the nerds who were playing Star Trek role playing games in our living rooms ten years ago and the kids who grew up and used it to bond with our parents," Lanzing tells Space.com. "'Star Trek' is a continuous element in both of our lives. It helped form our friendship. It's helped connect to our friends and family. A lot of people responded well to " Star Trek: Year Five ," and now seeing the response to the new launch, we’re extremely lucky to be here. Not a lot of people get to touch this IP, especially not in comics. It’s a very small group, so getting the chance to come in on it is a real privilege. We just need to do right by "Star Trek" and do the work that we as fans would want to see. Otherwise we’d bury ourselves under pressure."

"Deep Space Nine" holds a special place in both of the writers' hearts and they share a deep affinity for the Benjamin Sisko character. This was the only open story territory that gave them enough runway to do something with and was exactly what they hoped to do for nostalgia's sake, which was to bring Sisko back out of the wormhole and throw him into his next big adventure. Issue 2 of "Star Trek" from IDW is available at its full ebook price for Kindle as of its Nov. 30 release.

"Sisko is the captain who doesn’t have his own show or his own feature film," Lanzing explained. "Avery Brooks seems like he has no intention of ever returning to the character. But his character specifically says he will return, in part because Avery Brooks himself was unhappy with the idea that the first Black captain was going to leave his son and disappear into the wormhole and become an absentee father. So he made them add a line that he was coming back. Then he never came back and so there's this giant question mark of what’s up with Sisko."

Lanzing and Kelly are approaching this project with a fan-first attitude, and their unbridled enthusiasm for the material is what people are most excited about.

"We just have to keep telling stories that continue to bring us passion," Kelly said. "'Star Trek' is this universal language we can all love and adore and take something out of. But if we start thinking of ourselves as bigger than that I think we'd collapse under the responsibility and legacy we’re now so privileged to be playing a part in."

Relating to this rebooted flagship series that finds Sisko returning as a god and gathering a legacy crew borrowed from the "Star Trek" universe, the writing duo has put a fresh wrapping on a popular fan-favorite character. Lanzing explains the idea:

"We turned in a three-page document for 'Star Trek' and we came in with a very simple phrase, of 'Someone is killing the gods.' Within 'Star Trek' that might feel like an odd way to pivot in. In talking about 'Star Trek' and what made it specifically not 'Star Wars' or 'Battlestar Galactica' is that it plays with species that exist far beyond our technological level. Species that don’t operate the way that we do, that have the technological equivalent of magic. Those things are never threatened in 'Star Trek.' They're always at the top of the food chain and if those start getting taken out, that means you can put in our favorite captain, a character we knew we wanted to center this book around … Benjamin Sisko, the Emissary of the Prophets."

Star Trek issue 2 cover art showing a human hand and Klingon knife

Their elevator pitch was, "Let’s do an 'Avengers' with 'Star Trek,'" and pull characters from different eras by setting it in a time where most of these characters were alive. It's a notion that alludes back to Marvel's "Original Sin" and "Thor: The God Butcher."

"I wouldn’t say we were necessarily riffing off any of those iconic series, however, we are fans of comics first and foremost and we love the power of the crossover," Kelly added. "And "Star Trek" is really the first shared universe in modern big-budget storytelling. With our sister book, ' Star Trek: Defiant ,' which launches next year, there’s nothing more exciting than having them slam into each other."

Ramon Rosanas' illuminating, retro-cool artwork truly captures the authentic "Star Trek" tone and greatly enhances Lanzing and Kelly's carefully composed storyline.

" Art in 'Star Trek' comics has had a certain look for a very long time and there’s only a few artists who’ve done it and done it successfully," Lanzing notes. "When editor Heather Antos came in, her immediate goal was to try to take the "Star Trek" art style and push it well beyond what people were used to, and to open up a space for different kinds of comics artists to come in and play.

"Up until now, there’s been a push to make the art feel like the actors, the likenesses. But at any given time we should see Benjamin Sisko, not just Avery Brooks. Ramon is great at both. He really is a remarkable artist and he’s a lot more understated than people would think. Then Lee Loughridge is a colorist we’ve wanted to work with for ages. He’s got a great eye for it and pushes stuff forward."

Kelly feels that Loughridge's veteran contributions are essential for the book’s ultimate success.

"Lee fills in and creates a lot of texture and depth to Ramon’s pencils," he noted. "Ramon is not hyper-focused on detail in terms of likenesses, which lets Lee play, which is incredibly important to trust your artist. Especially when you think of ' The Original Series ,' which was a very colorful show. They were constantly slamming things with purple lights and hot green."

Moving forward into the second issue and beyond, two temporary artists take over for series illustrator Rosanas, each one with a slightly different take on the style.

Star Trek issue 2 cover art showing Data's face.

"Ramon is taking issues #2 and #3 off as he's doing a big crossover for #4, #5, and #6 later in the run," said Lanzing. "We have two one-off issues, #2 which takes readers deep into Klingon territory, and #3 is our Q issue. Knowing those were going to be two different tones, we brought in other artists to try some different stuff. Oleg Chudakov is going to be doing #2. He's a new Russian artist and much more expressive so you'll see that idea of pushing likeness before we lose the thread. Then we’ve got Joe Eisma, who did 'Morning Glories,' who’s an amazing artist and great at acting coming in to do Q before we bring back Ramon and settle into that tone."

Lanzing and Kelly are having a blast on this "Star Trek" title and the thrill is evident.

"We've been playing 'Star Trek' as a role-playing game for years so really one of the first jobs you have when thinking about 'Star Trek' is what pieces are on the table," Kelly adds. "Sometimes it's important to come in and build new things, but the danger can be getting so into the weeds that it can start to edge into fan fiction. We need to make sure our characters are earning it and everything is diegetic to the universe and the reality of 'Star Trek.'"

IDW Publishing's "Star Trek #2" lands on Earth on Nov. 30, 2022.

Screen Rant

14 biggest star trek updates: section 31, starfleet academy, strange new worlds & more.

Alex Kurtzman outlines his plans for the future of Star Trek to Variety, providing exciting updates on Section 31, Picard, Starfleet Academy and more!

 • Star Trek franchise teases exciting future with reveals on Section 31, Strange New Worlds, and more in recent interview.
 • Michelle Yeoh's Section 31 movie promises action-packed spy thrills in space, akin to Mission: Impossible.
 • Starfleet Academy set in 32nd century, with new sets and episodes for fan favorite series like Strange New Worlds.

The Star Trek franchise has just revealed a treasure trove of new information about Star Trek: Section 31 , season 3 of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and much more. With Star Trek: Discovery ending in 2024, and concerns over the implications of a potential Paramount merger, it's reassuring to discover that the future of the Star Trek franchise looks very bright indeed. Key figures like Alex Kurtzman and Eugene Roddenberry Jr. have revealed new details about the upcoming Star Trek movies , Michelle Yeoh's Section 31 , and a possible sequel to Star Trek: Picard in a brand-new interview.

In a Variety feature entitled The Future of ‘Star Trek’: From ‘Starfleet Academy’ to New Movies and Michelle Yeoh, How the 58-Year-Old Franchise Is Planning for the Next Generation of Fans , Adam B. Vary talks to a number of key figures involved with the current Star Trek TV shows and movies about the exciting future for the franchise. Talking to stars Anson Mount, Ethan Peck, and Michelle Yeoh, Adam B. Vary unearths some exclusive information about what to expect from Star Trek 's next few years on TV and in theaters.

14 the first image of star trek: section 31 is released, michelle yeoh's georgiou meets a mystery figure.

The Variety feature gives Star Trek fans their first glimpse of Emperor Philippa Georgiou (Michelle Yeoh) back in action. Star Trek: Section 31 wrapped filming recently, so attention now turns to post-production ahead of a future release on Paramount+. The image shows Georgiou whispering something into the ear of a mysterious, but memorable looking character . Whether this is a Section 31 asset or one of the movie's antagonists is not yet clear.

Who this metal mohawked character with the tattoos and cybernetic augmentations will likely remain a mystery until such time as Star Trek: Section 31 releases a trailer. However, it's good to see Michelle Yeoh back in her trademark black leathers playing Georgiou again after such a long delay. The first image is an intriguing tease of things to come for Michelle Yeoh's appropriately top secret Section 31 movie.

13 Star Trek: Section 31 Features A Young Rachel Garrett

Played by hannibal's kacey rohl.

One of the biggest surprises from Variety 's Star Trek: Section 31 set report is the revelation that Georgiou will team up with a young Rachel Garrett (Kacey Rohl). Until now, the roles played by Section 31 's cast have been kept under wraps. Now it's been confirmed that Kacey Rohl will be playing the future captain of the USS Enterprise-C in Section 31 . All that's known about Garrett is how she dies, meaning that there's a lot of unexplored backstory for Section 31 to reveal.

Kacey Rohl starred as Abigail Hobbs in Hannibal , created by Star Trek: Discovery co-creator, Bryan Fuller.

Rachel Garrett's involvement in Star Trek: Section 31 could also narrow down when in the Star Trek timeline the movie is set. Rachel Garrett was a Starfleet officer in the early to mid 24th century, and died in 2344. This suggests that the Guardian of Forever didn't send Georgiou back to her own time in Star Trek: Discovery season 3 , but instead sent her to some point a few decades later.

Rachel Garrett: Star Trek’s Most Tragic Enterprise Captain Explained

12 michelle yeoh calls section 31 "mission: impossible in space", star trek's spy movie is more tom cruise than john le carré..

Oscar winner Michelle Yeoh discussed her love for the character of Georgiou in the Variety piece, and gave an enticing tease of what to expect. Yeoh describes Star Trek: Section 31 as "" Mission: Impossible" in space " which is a neat elevator pitch that gives audiences a good idea of what to expect. Under the creative direction of Tom Cruise and Christopher McQuarrie, the Mission: Impossible movies have become thrilling globetrotting adventures, filled with incredible stunts.

The idea of transposing that Mission: Impossible style to the Star Trek universe suggests that Michelle Yeoh's movie will be full of action and adventure. Star Trek: Section 31 writer Craig Sweeny backs this up, by explaining what Star Trek 's spy movie isn ' t . Read Craig Sweeny's quote below:

“I didn’t want to make the John le Carré version, where you’re in the headquarters and it’s backbiting and shades of gray. I wanted to do the people who were at the edges, out in the field.

11 Section 31 Visit An Alien Nightclub

Georgiou visits a club full of classic star trek aliens..

When Adam B. Vary visits Michelle Yeoh on the set of Star Trek: Section 31 , she's preparing to shoot a scene inside an alien nightclub. From Quark's Bar in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine to the pleasure planet of Risa, there are many ways to unwind in the Star Trek universe. However, given that this is Section 31 , it's likely that the nightclub visited by Georgiou and Garrett will be a seedier location, perhaps where the mysterious mohawked figure is holding court.

Intriguingly, the Variety feature also reveals that the nightclub will be populated by some classic Star Trek aliens. This location is clearly some sort of hub where the movers and shakers of the galaxy are meeting up, making it a prime location for Section 31's best operatives to be seen. Adam B. Vary gives an enticing description of the action on set while filming this scene from Star Trek: Section 31 in a quote below:

A few minutes later, dozens of extras in all manner of outlandish evening wear file into the club, several of them made up as classic “Star Trek” aliens that fans might be surprised to see in this kind of swanky establishment.

10 Jonathan Frakes' Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 Episode Is A Hollywood Murder Mystery

Frakes says that it's “the best episode of television" he's ever done..

Jonathan Frakes is returning to direct an episode of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 that he says is "the best" he's ever done. That's quite a claim, given the director's prolific output between Star Trek: The Next Generation and SNW season 3. Frakes' episode is reportedly a "Hollywood murder mystery", which invokes images of hard-boiled detectives and glamorous settings. It sounds like one more thing to be excited about as production on Strange New Worlds season 3 continues.

9 Starfleet Academy Confirmed To Take Place In Star Trek's 32nd Century

The show will build on star trek: discovery's established canon..

Alex Kurtzman confirms to Variety that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will be set in the 32nd century, presumably following on from Star Trek: Discovery 's final season . The Variety feature astutely points out that, by setting Starfleet Academy in the largely unexplored 32nd century, it will reduce the amount of revision that its young adult audience will have to do. Interestingly, the feature also highlights that Star Trek has an aging fanbase, which makes a show like Starfleet Academy vital in building fandom's next generation .

Alex Kurtzman doesn't confirm if any of Star Trek: Discovery 's cast will be making the transition to Star Trek: Starfleet Academy . However, the confirmation of the 32nd century setting does make it more likely that Mary Wiseman's Tilly could appear in the show as an instructor . While casting is still being kept under wraps, Kurtzman and the team did reveal some more information about Starfleet Academy 's setting.

Starfleet Academy Show Is "Trying To Tell A Star Trek Story In A New Way", Says Tawny Newsome

8 starfleet academy will be set in san francisco, star trek's ya show is making the voyage home..

Set designs shared with Variety by Alex Kurtzman and production designer Matthew Davies reveal that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will return to San Francisco . When Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) and the crew arrived in the 32nd century in Star Trek: Discovery season 3, Earth was no longer a member of the Federation. This meant that Starfleet Headquarters, and a fledgling Starfleet Academy had moved off-world.

The designs reveal that the 32nd century Starfleet Academy will have " a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge ", cementing its location. San Francisco has always been Starfleet's home , so it's fitting that Star Trek: Starfleet Academy will have its roots there. Rooting the show in San Francisco also gives Starfleet Academy a chance to explore what life on Earth looks like in Star Trek 's 32nd century.

7 Starfleet Academy Will Be Star Trek's Biggest-Ever Set

Every inch of pinewood toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage will be used..

Star Trek: Starfleet Academy appears to be literally building the titular educational establishment for use in the show, making it the biggest set ever constructed for Star Trek . Looking over the designs with Alex Kurtzman and Matthew Davies, Adam B. Vary gives a sense of the scale of the 32nd century's Starfleet Academy. Read his quote below:

a sprawling, two-story structure that will include a mess hall, amphitheater, trees, catwalks, multiple classrooms and a striking view of the Golden Gate Bridge in a single, contiguous space. To fit it all, they plan to use every inch of Pinewood Toronto’s 45,900 square foot soundstage, the largest in Canada

6 The Enterprise Gets A New Science Lab In Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3

And there's a glimpse of ethan peck's spock at work..

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds season 3 will debut a new science lab set , and it looks very impressive. Intriguingly, the new lab is described as having "a four-foot pool of water that swirls underneath the central workbench". Whether this means that Strange New Worlds will introduce its own cetacean ops, or continue Starfleet's love of whales , remains to be seen. Either way, the new set is an impressive addition that suggests Lt. Spock (Ethan Peck) will need to upgraded facilities to solve some scientific conundrum in SNW season 3.

5 There's No Genre That Strange New Worlds Can't Do

"could it do muppets sure. could it do black and white, silent, slapstick maybe”.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds showrunner Akiva Goldsman reaffirms that the Star Trek: The Original Series prequel can attempt any genre. Responding to Vary's question of whether there's a genre that Strange New Worlds couldn't do, Goldsman had an " impish " response. Read Goldsman's quote about a potential Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Muppet episode below:

“As long as we’re in storytelling that is cogent and sure handed, I’m not sure there is,” [...] “Could it do Muppets? Sure. Could it do black and white, silent, slapstick? Maybe!”

4 Strange New Worlds AR Wall Can Be Disorienting For The Cast

But not for everyone....

Elsewhere in the Variety feature, Anson Mount discusses Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' use of the AR wall to create alien backdrops. Where previous Star Trek shows had used a greenscreen, the LCD screens that make up SNW 's AR wall allow the actors to actually see the environments that they're acting against . While it's a benefit, it doesn't always create a great experience for the actors, as Anson Mount points out.

“The images on the walls start to move in a way that makes no sense,” [...] “You end up having to focus on something that’s right in front of you so you don’t fall down.”

However, Ethan Peck says that he doesn't get disoriented by the AR wall, wryly joking that Spock wouldn't be fazed by it, so he's simply method acting. Hilariously, Anson Mount also reveals that they refer to the AR wall as the Holodeck. The route that actors take to the AR wall on the set of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is even decorated with posters of the holodeck, and a sign that reads "Weclome to the Holodeck" in the classic Star Trek font.

Enterprise’s Holodeck Is Star Trek’s “Most Imaginative” Invention, Says TNG Producer

3 alex kurtzman is considering a "follow up" to star trek: picard, could patrick stewart get his wish for a final picard movie.

While news of Star Trek: Legacy is absent from Variety 's sprawling feature about the future of the franchise, Alex Kurtzman does drop a small hint about continuing the story of Star Trek: Picard . It's long been suspected that Star Trek: Section 31 will pave the way for more Paramount+ exclusive movies . This is confirmed by Kurtzman, who is already considering potential follow-ups should Section 31 be a success. A follow-up Star Trek: Picard movie is one of the projects that Kurtzman is considering, but there's no further information as to what this would be.

2 Toby Haynes' Star Trek Movie Is An Origin Story For The Entire Franchise

Is star trek's origin movie set for 2026's 60th anniversary.

Variety has confirmed that Seth Grahame-Smith's Star Trek movie, to be directed by Andor 's Toby Haynes, will be an origin story for the entire franchise . More interesting still is that the movie is rumored to be "on track" for pre-production to begin by the end of this year. This suggests that the theatrical release Toby Haynes' Star Trek origin movie could form part of the 60th anniversary celebrations in 2026. Star Trek: First Contact did something very similar for the 30th anniversary celebrations in 1996, so it will be interesting to see how a new movie continues that story 30 years later.

1 The Flight Attendant's Steve Yockey Is Working On Star Trek 4

Yockey is the latest writer to work on the kelvin timeline's finale..

While Toby Haynes' Star Trek origin movie currently appears to be on track, Star Trek 4 remains in development hell. The Variety feature states that Paramount still intends to give Chris Pine's Star Trek movies a final chapter, but not much has changed since the last disappointing update. However, it has been confirmed that The Flight Attendant creator Steve Yockey is now working on a new draft of Star Trek 4 , but there's no further information than this. While the Kelvin Timeline movies still being stuck at the scripting stage may be disappointing, it's hard to deny that the future of the wider Star Trek franchise looks very bright indeed.

Star Trek 's Future Includes More Movies, More TV, and More Michelle Yeoh

A wide-ranging look at the future of star trek gives us major updates on section 31 , starfleet academy , and trek 's hopes for a return to the box office..

Image for article titled Star Trek's Future Includes More Movies, More TV, and More Michelle Yeoh

Star Trek ’s streaming revival finds itself at a bit of a crossroads. Discovery , the series that brought the show back to its current heights, is preparing to begin its final season next week—and Picard , arguably one of its biggest successes, came to an end last year. But things ending has never stopped Star Trek from looking ahead to what’s next, and there’s plenty on the way.

As part of a wide ranging feature for Variety , Paramount has revealed a swath of hints about what to expect as Star Trek transitions from the stable of shows it has developed in the years since Discovery revived the franchise in 2017 (for what was then CBS All Access, now Paramount+), to a franchise looking to push itself on screens big and small once again.

Several of the shows that form Star Trek ’s current streaming era will of course continue—like the smash-hit success Strange New Worlds , currently filming its third season; the animated series Lower Decks ; and the kids-focused 3DCG series Prodigy , which has found a new streaming home at Netflix after being suddenly and controversially axed from Paramount+ last year. But now Star Trek ’s future beyond them is anchored in not just at least one more new TV show—the upcoming Starfleet Academy , now explicitly confirmed to be set in the 32nd Century setting established by Discovery ’s last three seasons—but experimentations in film in both theatrical and streaming formats.

The most major of these is Section 31 , the Michelle Yeoh-helmed series-pitch-turned-streaming film that follows her Discovery character, Phillipa Georgiou (actually the Mirror Universe variant of Yeoh’s character, who perished in its opening episodes) as she finds herself involved in the titular shady Starfleet secret police division introduced in Deep Space Nine . It’s now seemingly been confirmed that Section 31 will be set in the time period between Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and Star Trek: The Next Generation , as a major character joining Yeoh in the film will be a young Rachel Garrett, played by Kacey Rohl—the captain of the Enterprise -C introduced in the TNG episode “Yesterday’s Enterprise.” Also floated as a potential continuation of this streaming movie format beyond Section 31 is more from the world of Star Trek: Picard —apparently not the so-called Legacy spinoff cast and crew have been asking for since the series concluded last year, but a movie previously teased by Patrick Stewart that would, presumably, continue to focus on Picard after the events of the show.

Paramount+ is not the only home for future Star Trek film content however. Plans are still underway to make a fourth and final film with the remaining cast of the Star Trek 2009 reboot movie—known as the alternate “Kelvin Timeline” continuity—with The Flight Attendant ’s Steve Yockey drafting the latest script for the latest iteration of the film, which has been trying to get off the ground in various forms since 2018, having most recently lost director Matt Shakman to Marvel’s The Fantastic Four . Further along the line than Star Trek 4, however, is another tentpole Trek movie: first reported on earlier this year as being written by Seth Grahame-Smith and directed by Andor ’s Toby Haynes, this film is now explicitly described as “an origin story of sorts” for, not as previously assumed, the aforementioned Kelvin timeline, but the “Prime” Star Trek canon, suggesting a return to the time period first explored in Star Trek: Enterprise .

All this, of course, remains in flux— Star Trek has few rivals in the Hollywood world when it comes to announced projects not actually making it out to audiences in one form or another (the galaxy far, far away says hello to its fellow Star franchise). But suffice to say Paramount has big, big plans for Star Trek in a bunch of forms across TV and film, and they’re unlikely to slow down any time soon.
