Small family cafes and huge world-known restaurant chains, fast food bistros and luxury top-end restaurants, street food of all kinds – all of these can be found in New York. The variety of different cuisines is exquisite: French, Greek, Italian, Mexican, Middle Easter, Chinese, Japanese, Thai, Indian, Vietnamese – this is just a short list of what you can taste in the Big Apple.

If you are on a low budget and want to cook for yourself, visit the markets: Chelsea and Fulton 55, where you can find all kinds of fresh ingredients for your meals, as well as many street food vendors and budget cafes. There is also a list of must-try foods and drinks of New York. They don’t necessarily originate from the city, but they have definitely gained their particular features here and must be appreciated. So, if you want to feel like a real New Yorker, don’t avoid:

New York City is, probably, the world’s winner for the number of night establishments opening every week, as well as for ones that close. Every district of the city has a variety of night clubs and bars for every taste and wallet size. If you stay in Manhattan, you should visit Greenwich Village, which is filled with night entertainment facilities, popular with both locals and tourists. Since the NYU students are the biggest part of the local public here, the prices are quite reasonable. If you are up for something more elegant, head to Chelsea or Lower East Side. And, of course, even if you stay in Queens, Staten Island, or Brooklyn, you won’t feel the lack of night entertainment either. New York is the city, which never sleeps.

Jazz is another thing that you can always find in the Big Apple. It is called the world capital of jazz for a reason. In the past, the city has revealed hundreds of jazz musicians and presented them to the world. Nowadays, there are still numerous establishments, where you can enjoy a drink with your friends or date, while listening to some good jazz. The Blue Note, situated in Greenwich Village, is, probably, the most well-known jazz club, as well as the Village Vanguard, located in the same district. However, these are the places for people with high travel budget. If you are looking for something simpler and cheaper, head to Fat Cat or Smalls, standing just a block away from each other, also in Greenwich Village.

If you are into passionate Afro-Caribbean music and love Latina dancing, New York City is a great place for you too! Salsa, although originates from Cuba, has rooted deeply in the cultural life of New York. The most popular places are Copacabana near the Times Square, which opened its doors for the first time in the 1940’s, Iguana in West Midtown, and El Morocco in Spanish Harlem.

If you consider yourself more of a classical music lover, choose one of the multiple opera, ballet, or musical performances, which the city offers. Head to Carnegie Hall, Radio City Music Hall, or one of the Broadway theaters, in order to enjoy a nice classical evening. And, of course, you can’t feel real New York without attending one of the sport matches. Most New Yorkers are passionate sport fans and have their favorite baseball, hockey, or basketball team. Join them for a night of sport fun, and don’t forget to pick up souvenirs with the name of the team you like!

Getting around the city of New York is not difficult, as it has an extremely extended system of public transportation. Subway, buses, commuter rail, as well as ferries, operate on a regular basis.

The simplest way to get from one point to another inside the city limits is by subway. You might be scared by the horror stories about New York subway criminal situation, but it’s almost completely in the past nowadays. Anyway, you should still beware and not attract criminals. The rules of safety are quite clear: don’t show your valuables in public, don’t walk alone at night, try to take crowded trains and use crowded stations. If you keep that in mind, most likely, you’ll be safe.

However, if you don’t feel secure enough, it’s better to take a taxi. World-famous yellow cabs have become a real symbol of New York, along with the Empire State Building, Central Park, and the Statue of Liberty. This is, probably, the second most popular way of transportation among New Yorkers, after subway.

Cabs are multiple, comfortable and reasonably-priced. To get one, all you need to do is raise your arm standing at the edge of the pavement. Keep in mind, though, it might be hard to catch a taxi during the rush hours. And, of course, remember about traffic jams. It might be better to take a subway if you are in a hurry!

Ferries connect the heart of New York with its islands. Staten Island Ferry starts at the Battery Park in the south of Manhattan and goes to Staten Island. It’s not only a great way of transportation, but also an opportunity to see New York Harbor and the Statue of Liberty on the way. The big bonus is that it’s free.

New York Waterway Company operates ferries between the city and New Jersey Hudson River Waterfront, stopping also in Brooklyn and Queens. These ferries are not free, so keep that in mind.

New York Water Taxi are ferries painted yellow, like famous New York cabs. They connect points within Manhattan, as well as some points in Brooklyn and New Jersey.

The Big Apple is, probably, one of the most expensive cities to live in. If you decide to visit New York, be ready to pay, at least, $100 for a double room in a hotel, and a minimum of $50 for a bed in a hostel dormitory. However, that is if you want to stay in Manhattan. But there are other districts in New York City, of course. If you choose Queens, Brooklyn, Long Island, or New Jersey, you can find much cheaper accommodations of the same quality as in Manhattan.

When traveling during the low tourist season – in January, February, or August, you can also save your traveler’s budget, as hotels usually reduce prices during this time of year. As for the days of week, Sunday is usually the cheapest day to rent a room in New York City.

When booking, keep in mind that fares are often mentioned without taxes. If you add all the taxes for New York State and New York City, you will end up with a 15%-higher price. Be ready to pay it on arrival.

New York City has continental climate, with hot summers, cold winters, cool autumns, and wet springs. In winter, the temperature can fall as low as -18 o C, and during the summer, it can raise as high as to +38 o C.Keep in mind, during the summer months, as well as in September, New York can experience heavy tropical storms, so bring a raincoat. Snowstorms occur often in winter, but the snow usually does not last longer than a couple of days.

New York is the city, which you can explore for weeks : admiring the skyscrappers, having lovely picnics in the parks, taking pictures, listening to stories, and buying souvenirs. However, if you have limited time, here is a list of main attractions you should not miss.

Landmarks : the Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Federal Hall, World Trade Center Site, Brooklyn Bridge, Empire State Building, Chrysler Building, Grand Central Terminal, New York Public Library, Rockefeller Center, Radio Music Hall, and Times Square.

Museums : the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, the Frick Collection, the Museum of Modern Art, the Brooklyn Museum of Art, the PS1 Contemporary Art Center, the American Museum of Natural History, the New York Hall of Science, and the Transit Museum.

Parks : Central Park, Fort Tryon Park, Pelham Bay Park, Prospect Park, Flushing Meadow Park, the Greenbelt, and parts of the Gateway National Recreational Area.

If you see these places, you can honestly say that you have seen the most interesting spots in New York. However, if you want to get the most out of your time in New York City, we highly recommend taking a daily bus tour. Anyway, a trip to New York will become something you’ll remember for the rest of your life!

My recommendation

One thing up front: all of the day trips are worth the price and you won’t go wrong with any of them. I personally think the 2 day trip is the best because you have enough time to enjoy the falls. By staying overnight on site you can also explore the Canadian side of Niagara Falls. This is worthwhile because you can walk to the Horseshoe Falls.

If you don’t have much time, you can also do the 1 day trip – this day is packed with highlights but you will be on the road for almost 20 hours. And if you have the possibility to plan even 3 extra days, definitely do the 3 day trip to Niagara Falls, Toronto and the Thousand Islands !

On my first visit to Niagara Falls, I didn’t take advantage of any of these best Niagara Falls tours from New York. Instead, I did it the wrong way. I showed up with no plan and no idea of what I would be missing by doing so.

Niagara Falls is absolutely incredible—a sight you can’t really appreciate in pictures but must see (and hear) up close for yourself. I never got as close to the Falls as I would have liked and I didn’t get to learn anything about them either.

For those reasons, I bring you a list of the best Niagara Falls tours from New York so you can have the ideal Niagara Falls experience that I missed.

Visiting Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is a unique attraction in that you can visit from both Canada and the United States, seeing different things from each side. If you plan on checking out both, remember you must have your passport to cross the border and back. (I didn’t have my passport with me on my visit so I was restricted to the New York side of things.)

This post is going to specifically focus on the best Niagara Falls tours from New York only.  If you’re a U.S. resident planning to take these tours, you do not need a passport. But, I can’t stress enough you should take one anyway in case the day takes you across the border as there’s a lot of cool stuff to see over there too. 

Why take a tour of Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls is massive. Like, way bigger and more terrifyingly powerful than you could ever gauge from just looking at pictures. Niagara Falls is also America’s oldest state park (established in 1885) with an interesting history all its own.

I recommend taking a tour of Niagara Falls to:

• Get up close views of the Falls like none other
• Check out some of the lesser-known parts of the Falls—not just the most famous and most recognizable areas
• Really get a sense of the power of the Falls (the sound will astound!)
• Learn about the history of the Falls and the surrounding areas from expert guides
• See the highlights if you’re short on time

Pro tip: If you’ll be visiting Toronto before or after your visit to Niagara Falls, be sure to pick up a Toronto CityPASS to save a bunch of money on the city’s popular sights (including a trip up the CN Tower).

The Niagara Falls area has its fair share of hotel chains, but I love the Giacomo and its grand art deco feel. This downtown Niagara Falls hotel is just a 10-minute walk to Niagara Falls State Park and many of the sights. 

Reviewers love the beauty and cleanliness of this hotel along with the helpfulness of the staff. They also claim the Giacomo has the best view and location on the New York side of the Falls.

Our trip was in Eastern Canada the first of July 2023. It was a nightmare to figure out how to get to our hotel from the train and subways, up and down soooo many stairs then walking the rest of the way with our luggage mind you. Definitely call for a ride to the hotel. Our first hotel was nice in Toronto. Niagara Falls was fun and definitely something to experience. The tour buses on our whole trip were comfortable and we had great drivers, especially Mike. He was so personable and took really good care of us! The second hotel in Ottawa was good too but when we went to Quebec City that was the worst hotel I’ve ever been in! The beds were uncomfortable, the air conditioner didn’t work well at all, and the shower was messed up and only ran hot water. Then the water wouldn’t shut off so we had to call someone to shut it off with tools. The tub didn’t have anything on the bottom for you to not slip so I slipped getting in and tore the towel rack down which was just glued on. I ended up having to place a towel in the shower where we could take a shower and not fall down. The people that worked there were rude. The carpet in the hallways was disgusting and coming up which is a major trip hazard. One couple that was on the tour with us showed me a piece of metal that fell from his ceiling in his room and hit him in the head. We had to stay two miserable nights there! Our next hotel in Montreal was okay and the last hotel they put us in back in Toronto was a very nice hotel and had a wonderful breakfast. Our guide was nice and informative too. We enjoyed seeing everything we did either while in the bus or walking around the cities. I’m not sure if I will do another group tour or not. Guess we’ll see….

Eastern Canada Highlights in a Week

WY were fantastic. The hotels that were booked were above our expectations, central to all the tours we were booked on. Instructions regarding travel and meeting places were very clear and the included tours gave us a wonderful taste of each place, with a balance of free time for our own exploring. One of our flights was delayed by almost 6 hours (NOT WY’s fault) and we arrived in Toronto very early in the morning. WY organised our driver, contacted the hotel and thus we avoided what could have been a difficult situation in an unfamiliar city. Thank you WY - We absolutely recommend you as a reasonably priced, high quality, well organised tour group!!

Your day begins with an early morning departure from Times Square in Manhattan. You travel by comfortable motorcoach with your bilingual (English & Spanish) tour guide , enjoying the scenic landscape of upstate New York (travel time is approximately 7 – 8 hours, each way, with one rest stop ) on your journey north.

Upon arrival at your destination, you begin experiencing the adventure, beauty, and natural wonder of the Niagara Falls on board of the historic Maid of the Mist boat cruise or, when the Maid of the Mist is not running (for example in the winter months), from other observation points such as Cave of the Winds Gorge Walk or others available based on the weather conditions.

During your visit, you learn about the interesting history of these mighty waters and enjoy spectacular views of the falls from different vantage points. You have the opportunity for lunch on your own, souvenir shopping, and exploring the beautiful Niagara Falls State Park. After an unforgettable experience and wonderful memories, relax on board your comfortable motorcoach for the return to Times Square in Manhattan, arriving back between 11 p.m. – midnight .

We personally recommend wearing comfortable clothing and walking shoes while on tour.

He made the safety for our group his main priority, which we very much appreciate. Brian the Niagara Falls tour guide was well informative about the whole park. He had an answer to all our questions regarding the Niagara falls, the islands, and all the surrounding structures connecting America to Canada. Exceptional Experience My 19 year old daughter and I had the great pleasure in participating in the Royal City Tours Private tour of Niagara Falls. Our experience and treatment by our driver, Daniel and local Niagara tour guide, Brian, were first class. Daniel and Brian placed the highest priority in our comfort, safety and overall trip experience. Our trip was 21 hours from departure from NYC to our return. Daniel drove safely and responsibly. He outlined the course of our trip and made sure to inform us that he was happy to fulfill any specific travel needs we may need along the way. Brian is a very knowledgeable and informed local licensed tour guide of the Niagara Falls area. He was able to instill knowledge of the falls, geology, historical water power generation, local history and wildlife we encountered. He was always concerned that we were getting the best experience and went out of his way to meet our needs. We chose the morning departure as we wanted to see the falls lit up at night. It was a beautiful sight and a great finale to a day spent exploring these beautiful falls. It is a long trip, but very worth the experience of this extraordinary natural wonder and State Park.

best tour ever in my life!! It was amazing specially tour guide Jacob!! Learned a lot about history about Naiagara falls.

Our tour guide Peter was so brilliant and funny and informative. I learned so much about Niagara in an immersive and humor infused conversation. And he really brought us all together in a connected group so that it became a truly memorable and shared experience to be treasured for a life time.

Peter was awesome. Thank you so much for all the information given to us about the history of Niagara Falls.

A waste of time and $. Spent several hundreds of dollars for what we thought would be an informative tour of the Falls park and a ride on the maid of the mist. What we got was walked to the line for maid of the mist, and accompanied through the line. There is no perk to this tour. No faster service or less wait than anyone else with a guide book and Google could do it for 1/4 of the cost.

Niagra Falls Tours is a fantastic tour operator. Dave went out of his way to accommodate our wishes. I would travel with them again Kathy.

Upon going to redeem my experience, there was no signs or location, except for direction, and then confirming with other people that they purchased this experience. The experience did not go as planned, the person that gave the tour had never given it before, and we were left with lots of waiting time, and we had to leave because our children miserable. if we were able to do this again, we would just purchase the maid of the mist experience at cost as that's about all we were able to have.

We took the Cave of Winds tour in late March and had an awesome experience! Peter was our guide and he was so knowledgeable about the history of the Falls and the area around them. From the start to finish, his stories and quips and little jokes kept us laughing. I highly recommend the tours and we would take the same tour again if Peter was our guide! One of the people in our group even joked that if the squirrels could talk, they'd say "Hey Peter!". I'm so glad we took this tour and made the memories that we made!

Cave of the Winds

Behind Bridal Veil Falls is a stupendous natural cave. Although there is no access inside the cave, the views from outside the cave are stunning. The World Changed Here Pavilion and display share the history of the falls and help you prepare for the 175-foot trip to the Niagara Gorge for an up-close and personal view of the Bridal Veil Falls.

Once there, you can stand at the “Hurricane Deck” and watch the falls crash against the rocks. You can’t get any closer than this. Don’t worry about getting all of your clothes or shoes wet because the admission fee includes free sandals as well as a poncho.

From the Niagara Falls State Park

The oldest park in the USA has the most perfect views of the falls. This park is located in the vicinity of many hotels, which allows you to easily walk to the park. If walking is not the best option, then a trolley bus can take you there. Many improvements have been made over the years that allow for stunning views, especially during the summer fireworks extravaganza. One of the best parts of the American side of Niagara Falls is the close proximity to the river and powerful falls.

Maid of the Mist boat ride

Some of the best views can be seen up close and personal while aboard the Maid of the Mist . Maid of the Mist departs from the New York Side of the falls and gets you close enough to feel the spray of the water. Although this is truly a touristy thing to do, the views and proximity to the falls don’t get any better than this.

If you’re trying to decide whether to take the Hornblower or Maid of the Mist, note that the Hornblower boat departs from the Canadian side while the Maid of the Mist departs from the New York side. Both boats follow the same basic route.

While photos of Niagara Falls are beautiful, nothing is better than seeing this Wonder of the World in person. This boat ride starts with gearing up in a provided poncho with a hood and takes you on a ride to the falls with an epic point of view. Prepare to get wet!

From Goat Island

This is a small island on the Niagara River, in the middle of Niagara Falls between the Bridal Veil Falls and the Horseshoe Falls. This island is only accessible from the Niagara Falls, New York side.

On one end of the island you can see Horseshoe Falls. At the other end there are beautiful views of Bridal Falls and American Falls. From Goat Island, one can take a quick walk through the footbridge and check out Three Sisters Islands, which has immaculate views of the Upper Rapids of the falls.
