The Codorniu Cellar Tour
Visit the codorníu cellars on a private tour.
The tour takes you to one of Spain's most important wineries and one of the oldest. Codorniu has produced wine back to 1551. And in 1872 the winery produced Spain's first sparkling wine after copying the French champagnoise method (also referred to as the traditional method or méthode champenoise). Codorníu is the producer of Spain's most sold Cava, "Anna de Codorniu" , and produces around 50 million bottles a year. The tour starts with pick-up at your hotel by with a private bus. After around 45 minutes you will be at the Codorniu Winery. Here you will start with an introductory video explaining about the history of Codorniu.
After this you will visit the winery with a local guide telling you about the production, The tour ends with a tasting of two of Codorniu's best cavas: Anna de Codorniu and the Plus Ultra. Hereafter you will visit the shop where you are able to buy not only Codorniu Cavas but also interesting products made by wineries owned by the Codorniu Group, such as Raimat, Bach, Scala Dei (a Priorat producer), Abadia de Poblet or Legaris. After the visit to the shop, you will be taken to your hotel or another place in Barcelona.

Codorniu Winery
The birthplace of Cava
- Further Out
This is where is all began – Cava production that is – back in the 19th Century. Josep Raventos Fatjo of the Codorniu estate came back from a fact-finding jaunt around France and, copying the production methods of French Champagne, came up with his own brand of sparkling wine.
He ordered a cave (or cava in Catalan) be dug to store the stuff, and hey presto history was made. Cava was an instant success and it wasn’t long before Spanish royalty were ordering express deliveries to their manifold tables.
The Codorniu Winery remains one of Spain’s two major Cava producers, but as well as buying up their rather tasty bottles, it is also possible to visit their vineyards on a guided tour. The Codorniu guide will lead you through the winery’s vast underground cellars, the beautiful gardens and the stunning Art Nouveau buildings designed by one of Barcelona’s greatest architects, Puig y Cadafalch.
You can book a tour of the premises via their website, or, if you have a bit more time, it’s a great idea to combine a a visit to the winery with a visit to the wonderful Montserrat mountain and its sacred abbey: in which case Get Your Guide offer this highly rated tour .
Aside from seeing Barcelona’s number one day trip, the advantage of taking a Montserrat & Codorniu combined tour is all your transport from Barcelona is taken care of, and you have a guide with you for the whole day.

Abel was really knowledgable and able to share new information even to someone who has visited several times already. E.g. - David A 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles A Must See This four hour tour was a perfect length of time to experience this incredible site. We took the 3p tour which made it a little warmer and gave us most of the day to do other stuff. The views alone, as you can tell, are worth the trip, but the monastery and all the history associated with it, make for a trip that should be at the top of your to do list. The entire experience was very customer friendly, from the booking to getting to the bus to the bus ride and our driver Miguel, to getting us back on time was all very smooth and easy. The balance between guided tour and free time was perfect. Irina was our guide and she was terrific, very friendly and knowledgeable. She went out of her way to make sure everyone was well taken care of. (On a side note, I found myself only with 50 euro bills in my pocket (curse you airport ATM!)...so if you would be so kind, please leave Irina a double tip when you go. She didn't mention it but she really was excellent and I wish I had let her know in a more concrete fashion when we parted.) Read more Written March 2, 2020

Codorníu Winery Guide
EXPLORE ALL OUR RECOMMENDED SPANISH WINERIES
One of the oldest winemaking families in Spain, Codorníu, has records dating back to 1551 of commercial wine production. Jaume Codorníu was the founding father of this 500-year-old winemaking family. In 1659, the young Codorníu heiress, Anna, married Miguel Raventós. This was the merger of the two families that are still linked to the business today. The first Cava (“ methode champenoise ”) wine was made by José Raventós, a direct descendant of Anna Codorníu and Miguel Raventós in 1872. He had studied the traditional French method of sparkling wine and brought these techniques back to the Penedés region. Tragically, less than 15 years later, the Phylloxera plague (a North American insect that decimated European vineyards in the late 1800s) infested the vineyards of the Penedés. The business was affected, but the family fought back with the most innovative viticultural techniques and survived the dilemma. By the end of the 19th century, Codorníu produced over 100,000 bottles of cava per annum.
Codorníu were members of high society, as shown when the King of Spain, Alfonso XIII, visited the Codorníu winery and presided over the banquet offered in his honor in 1904. Throughout the first half of the 20th century, it’s a wonder how any business could survive in the midst of war, never mind a “luxury goods” business. But Codorníu made it through this dark period in Spanish history and even flourished. In 1976, King Juan Carlos I of Spain declared the gorgeous “Modernista” cellars a Monument of National Historical-Artistic Merit. The beautiful winery was commissioned by Manuel Raventós, who inherited the Can Codorníu estate in 1885. He employed one of the leading architects of the time, Josep Puig I Cadalfach (today considered one of the “modernist” geniuses, along with Gaudi), to design the new winery in Sant Sadurni d’Anoia. The building lasted from 1885 to 1915, resulting in a stunning, unique structure. Codorníu is a pleasure for the wine tourist. It boasts one of the most attractive wineries in Spain. The company has been one of the innovators in “Wine Tourism” in Spain, providing the infrastructure necessary for an interesting visit. The ambiance of the place, paired with superb Cava wines, makes a visit to Codorníu’s cellars unforgettable.
In Codorníu, the key to crafting excellent cava lies in the meticulous selection of the finest grape varieties and the utmost care given to the vineyards. With an unwavering dedication to excellence, the winemakers at Codorníu demonstrate an exceptional understanding of the individual requirements of every grape variety. Their commitment extends beyond planting vines, as they proactively go above and beyond to ensure that each variety’s distinct needs are met even before a single vine takes root.
What sets Codorníu apart is their exclusive use of grapes from vineyards located in three distinct climatic zones within the D.O. Cava. This unique approach enables them to cultivate each variety in the precise region where it can genuinely showcase its distinctive character. Moreover, this remarkable diversity presents an unparalleled opportunity for Codorníu to craft various cava styles and types, setting them apart from their competitors.
John Radford, acclaimed Spanish wine expert, and journalist, says about Codorniu: “Anything made here is at least excellent and often exceptional. Best wines: the outstanding Codorníu 1551 (“big three” and Jaume Codorníu.).”

The inside story
With more than 450 years of history, Codorníu is one of the oldest winemaking families in Spain. Its winery is located just 45 minutes from Barcelona, nestled in the Penedès region, one of the most prestigious wine regions in the country for its sparkling and high-quality wines.
The various buildings that make up the cellars, located in the middle of nature and surrounded by vineyards, are one of the best examples of modernist architecture in Catalonia. Their origin dates back to 1895, when Manuel Raventós chose the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch to expand the Codorníu winery. In 1976 they were declared a Historic-Artistic Monument.
Jaume Codorníu was the founding father of this famous wine-making family. Designed by the architect Josep Puig i Cadafalch, the Codorníu winery buildings were declared a national historic-artistic monument in 1976. They represent one of the most prominent examples of art nouveau architecture in Spain. The property is surrounded by nature and vineyards. The winery includes several activities related to the world of wine, sparkling wine, nature, sport, culture and gastronomy. The company has been one of the innovators in "Wine Tourism" in Spain.
During the visit to the Cavas Codorníu, in addition to touring the different modernist buildings, visitors can delve into the history of the famous family of winemakers, learn about the process of making sparkling wine and see the machinery used during the production of cava.
It is worth noting that the subway cellars are among the largest in the world, and seeing the millions of bottles stored in them is quite a spectacle. The highlight of this popular experience is, without a doubt, the cava tasting!

Tour Highlights
Basilica of santa maria de montserrat.
With its origins in the 11th century, the Benedictine Abbey of Santa Maria de Montserrat definitely takes a prominent space in the mountain. More than 70 monks still live there using the basilica for mass. This newer church is open to the public and we will visit it during the tour.
Black Madonna shrine
The basilica is home to the oldest image of the Black Madonna of Montserrat, patron saint of Catalonia. It is a beautiful 12th-century Romanesque statue situated above the altar and in the early morning, you can access the shrine to take a closer look. To kiss the virgin’s hand and orb is definitely a spiritual experience.
A big surprise to any visit to Montserrat is the fantastic Art collection that its museum holds. Among the 1,300 pieces you can find works by Caravaggio, El Greco, Monet, Dalí or Picasso. This is a must if you are an Art lover.
Holy grotto
The Holy Grotto (or “Santa Cova” ) is a very important place of pilgrimage as this is where, according to tradition, in 880 the image of the Black Madonna was found. The 1.5 km walk to the cave and chapel is a delight with a monumental rosary including works by Catalan Art Nouveau names like Antoni Gaudí, Josep Puig i Cadafalch or Josep Llimona. Photo by J.Maria Viñolas .
Nature walks at Montserrat
For many, the highlight of a visit to Montserrat is not in the religious aspect but in the magnificent surroundings. There are many walks around the area to enjoy the fabulous rock formations. Five of the routes leave from the monastery so, depending on your level of fitness, you might want to take a stroll and admire the views.
Codorniú cava winery
Founded in 1551, Codorníu is one of the oldest companies in Spain and they have been producing cava in Catalonia since the 19th century. Their headquarters were designed by Puig i Cadafalch, one of the leading architects of the Modernisme. It is no surprise that the wonderful main room is often referred to as “The Cathedral of Cava”.
Guided visit to cellar
Entering the winery cellars at Codorníu is like travelling to an underground world full of 100-year-old sparkling wines. The endless corridors are distributed on 5 floors that can store millions of bottles. You will discover it all on a guided visit organised by the winery where you will learn all about the history of the place and how a great bottle of cava is produced.
Cava tasting
End the visit to the winery by tasting three of the premium Ars Collecta Codorníu cavas together with a small snack.
