The Big Journey Switch Review: Keep On Rollin', Baby

The Big Journey provides a satisfyingly calm experience that is perfect for unwinding after a long day.

If you’ve ever wanted to play as a cat whose sole purpose in life is to eat dumplings - and why wouldn’t you - now is your chance. The Big Journey , which was originally released on mobile devices and PC, is now available on the Nintendo Switch. While The Big Journey may not be the most groundbreaking indie title out there, the game provides a satisfyingly calm experience that is perfect for unwinding after a long day.

Saying The Big Journey has a story is a bit generous. Players take on the role of a cat named Mr. Whiskers who loves dumplings. When the cook of his favorite dumpling cart goes missing, Mr. Whiskers sets off on an adventure through caves and rolling hills to find his favorite chef.

Mr. Whiskers isn’t your average agile feline, though. He probably loves dumplings a little too much, because instead of using legs, the plump and round Mr. Whiskers rolls to get around. However, players don’t actually control the fat cat. Instead, movement is achieved by moving the background and letting gravity do its thing.

Control options include joystick movement or the Switch’s gyroscope. I personally preferred using the joystick, as the gyroscope didn’t feel refined enough to be effective, which is a shame considering the appeal of that feature.

Along the way, Mr. Whiskers can collect dumplings that increase his size. He also encounters enemies and obstacles to overcome. He never dies when touched by an enemy, he just loses one dumpling at a time (which can be picked up again).

Obstacles include cliffs to “climb” and doors to open. As plump as he is, Mr. Whiskers is still able to jump from ledge-to-ledge, and can get an extra boost by jumping on bounce pads and fluffy sheep.

Soothing Aesthetics

The Big Journey’s overall design is its best feature. Level designs aren’t really all that challenging as players make their way from point A to point B. However, there are plenty of hidden areas along the way that contain special items, other playable cats, and other characters to interact with.

The charming art design is complemented by the game's enchanting soundtrack. For the most part, each level can be completed in the time it takes for the level’s song to play once through, which is roughly two minutes. A few of the tracks are a little repetitive, but most of the songs are relaxing and enjoyable.

The Big Journey offers decent replayability through the use of its levels' star ratings, with three stars being a perfect score. Completionists will also be satisfied with the number of collectibles that can be snagged in each of the levels. Even speedrunners can get in on the action by trying to break their best time.

The Big Journey definitely feels like a game made for mobile devices. However, it works just fine on the Nintendo Switch. It may not be a must-own title, but for Switch owners who are looking to turn off their brain after a hectic day, they could do a lot worse than the reasonably-priced The Big Journey .

This cutesy odyssey stars a feline foody, Mr. Whiskers, as he hunts dumplings and the enigmatic Mr. Choo. While on its surface this is just a kiddy port of a mobile app, it’s surprisingly sophisticated in practice. Is there enough here to keep kids occupied and their parents stimulated?

The Big Journey is incredibly simple: your primary controls are tilting the world around Mr. Whiskers so he can roll toward his goal and jumping into enemy blobs. The game allows the player to choose between analog and motion controls, both of which are responsive and crisp. Since this was a mobile game before getting ported to Switch, it makes sense that the motion controls are as good as they are.

There is also an option to jump by tapping the Switch’s touch screen, but since you are required to play with Joy-Con attached in handheld mode there’s no real need to use this option. I found myself switching back and forth between the two control schemes trying to determine which I preferred, but I never came to a conclusion. Both are equally simple and fun.

Level Design

Each of the 30 levels in The Big Journey follows the same basic pattern: Mr. Whiskers must traverse small tunnels, bouncy platforms and a variety of obstacles in order to reach the arbitrary goal at the end of each stage. There are some repetitive hidden areas that contain dumplings: a good number of the dumplings can be found by just moving a bit to the left of the apparent wall. It doesn’t really change the way the levels play out, but it can make completing the game monotonous after finding umpteen not-really-hidden dumplings.

Mr. Whiskers grows larger and larger after eating set amounts of dumplings, if you find all of the dumplings in a single run, our furry hero becomes too chubby to fit through some of the tunnels and must voluntarily take damage in order to shrink and ultimately reach the goal. Not being allowed to take all the dumplings at once is slightly annoying, since that’s the whole point of the game.

The Big Journey ​ has a simple story: Mr. Whiskers discovers that Mr. Choo (the world’s best dumpling chef) is missing and the hungry cat follows a trail of dumplings across five biomes to find him. The highlight of the story is the incredibly funny cast of animals you meet along the way. Between the zany one-liners and pop culture references aplenty I found myself laughing with nearly every friendly encounter. The ending is a bit of a disappointment but doesn’t really detract from the overall cutesy appeal. ​ The Big Journey  t​ruly is about the journey and not the destination.

Graphics / Art Direction

The first thing you’ll notice about The Big Journey is its unique graphical style. First and foremost, the protagonist, Mr. Whiskers, is adorable. This is true of all the characters: all the cats you control and all the other woodland creatures you encounter are cute to the point of audible awwwww -s.

Luckily the characters didn’t overpower the backdrop. The entire game is vivid and full of color. If the screen were any smaller, I could imagine it being a bit cramped and over-stimulating but I never had this problem in handheld mode. The only issue I had with the graphics are the occasional enemy that would blend in with the background, or be obscured by some colorful foliage.

Music / Sound Design

The music in this game is just as light-hearted and delightful as the graphics. Each “World” has a unique group of musical themes that make up the overworld music and really help round out the pleasant aesthetic of the game. It’s simple and fun, like the rest of The Big Journey .

Final Score: 76%

The Big Journey isn’t something a “hardcore” gamer would look twice at, but it’s their loss. This game is a laid back romp through a variety of beautiful stages that never get stale. There are a few weird issues that stand out among the overall goodness of this game: the menus and achievements are kind of glitchy (I unlocked a character by completing the wrong achievement and was thus locked out of completing the game) and the game is really short (you could realistically power through it in a couple hours). I was surprised by how fun the game turned out to be, but it was too simple to hold my attention for very long. The Big Journey is a game that kids would love and their parents would enjoy but cringe at the $5 price tag.

Follow the trail of dumplings

Mr Whiskers is a very round and hungry cat who love’s all kinds of food but he has one favourite food above all other’s and that is dumplings! Specifically, dumplings made by Mr Choo. Unfortunately for Mr Whiskers, Mr Choo has gone missing!!

But what luck for Mr Whiskers and Mr Choo: Mr Choo has left a trail of dumpling’s behind. The trail leads towards the largest Mountain in the valley and Mr Whiskers takes it upon himself to follow the trail and rescue Mr Choo.

You take control of  Mr Whiskers as he sets of on his journey in this roly-poly physics based puzzle/ platform game, previously released on Steam and Mobile.

Dumplings make Mr Whiskers’ world go round.

By tilting the Nintendo Switch you tilt Mr Whiskers world. Try to roll him to safety through dark caves, hot deserts, and lush green valleys.

There are 6 worlds with 30 pretty handcrafted levels for Mr Whiskers to roll and bounce around in as he follows the trail of food….mainly dumplings.

Each level has a trail of food to follow and a few challenges to complete to receive 3 stars. Challenges such as find 7 dumpling’s, collect 100 bugs and finish the level in under 5 mins. Even though the levels are timed there are no penalties for going over the time limit, other than you don’t get a star for that particular challenge.

Enemies try to steal Mr Whiskers dumplings

Levels aren’t linear so Mr Whiskers will roll back and forth across each level collecting what he needs and then you finally arrive in a lovely valley with blooming flowers which turns out to be the end of the level.

Along the way, Mr Whiskers will have to avoid enemies and obstacles who want to steal his precious dumplings. If you don’t time your jump well and Mr Whiskers hits one of them, that’s exactly what happens: he losses one dumpling (the horror of it!).

Enemies can be defeated by jump bashing them if you have timed your jump correctly. But f Mr Whiskers does lose a dumpling, you have a few seconds to get it back before it vanishes in a poof.

Each twisty twirly level is packed with nooks and crannies that lead to treats and our cats favourite food of course. You’ll encounter friendly critters who may or may not have the info Mr Whiskers is looking for on Mr Choo’s location.

Most of the critters haven’t heard of Mr Choo’s whereabouts, but a nice touch for cat lovers and collectors alike: if the critter happens to be a cat as well, then able to play as that particular cat on your next turn. Looking different, but still bouncing and rolling.

Tilting or using the L-stick

As I’ve previously said you tilt the Nintendo Switch to roll the cat around and press the A button to jump. Alternately you can use the L stick to roll the kitty around instead of tilting your Switch.

I tried both control methods and for myself. I found that using the L stick and not tilting my Switch worked best for me, though both control schemes do work fine.

The visuals are a delight to look at while rolling and bouncing your way through them. Colourful backdrops and impressive attention to detail. Levels are filled with sweeping pathways, springy mushrooms and swaying leaves.

Sound effects are cool with Mr Whiskers purring happily as he bounces around and little speech bubbles appear above the cats’ head as he rolls along with cries of “Ooof” when he hits something.

The Big Journey is an entertaining and amusing game, with lovely visuals, designed for kids and adults alike. It has addictive gameplay, crisp storybook visuals and a snappy soundtrack to match. This is a fun game the whole family can enjoy, even if it is a single player game.

It’s easy to pick up and play a few levels on the Nintendo Switch and for the reasonable price of a few pounds it could give a few hours of entertainment for the whole family taking turns in playing.

The Big Journey for Nintendo Switch – Review

The Big Journey is a family-friendly Platformer originally released on mobile devices in 2017, subsequently being ported to PCs and in 2019 coming to the Nintendo Switch. And I’ll just come out and say it – this game is very clearly directly inspired by the Loco Roco franchise, with the formless blobs of that franchise replaced here by a round, rolling cat. However, as I often say, there’s nothing wrong with a game being a knockoff as long as it’s a good knockoff, so the question is, is this game good ?

Well, to start with, I can say that the presentation here is absolutely delightful, with a cute and cuddly vibe that’s very reminiscent of Loco Roco. The game’s colorful 2D visuals are all rounded and abstract in a way that’s very appealing, and this is perfectly complimented by the sounds, which have your cat making adorable “plupp” noises, giving a subdued growl when near enemies, and purring at the end of each level. There are also some nice environmental noises here too. And all of this is backed by a wonderful soundtrack with lighthearted and soothing themes. In particular, I really enjoy Book of Life (the version in the game removes some of the vocals, but I’d say it’s just as lovely, if a bit more minimalist).

As for the gameplay, for those who haven’t played Loco Roco, the basic idea is that you’re not moving around your character so much as you’re tilting the world so they can roll around, with the only other interaction you have being to make your character jump. Here, the interaction is much the same, but instead of collecting more blobs to make your blob bigger, you’re collecting dumplings to grow the size of your cat.

The result of this is that the gameplay ends up being simple, straightforward, and at times even a bit on the passive side – you’re sorta’ guiding the cat through the level, changing the angle of the ground and telling him to jump when needed, but his reactions are a bit sluggish (by design) and as a result the level geometry isn’t too demanding. As a Platformer, this game isn’t about the platforming challenge, so much as it is moving the cat through the level and maybe occasionally trying to negotiate the angle of a jump to get to a specific place. That’s not to say this game is completely without challenge – in every level players earn up to three stars – one for completion, one for finding a certain number of dumplings, and one for finding a certain number of smaller pickups (glowbugs). However, even this challenge is fairly light.

Beyond the low challenge level, I’d say that the level design here isn’t nearly as inventive as what’s in Loco Roco, and the short length of the levels (and frequent interruptions by dialogue with various animals you meet on the way) really slows down the game’s pacing. On the positive side, this game makes good use of motion controls so players can tilt the controller rather than using the analog stick (I actually find this works best in handheld mode, where your movements directly correlate with the screen’s movements), and the game uses optional touchscreen controls as well for the menu and the jump command (though the latter I find is better done with buttons anyway). On balance, I still feel like Loco Roco is the better game, though The Big Journey is no slouch.

In the end, while The Big Journey isn’t quite on par with Loco Roco, it is still an absolute delight of a Platformer, and while its low challenge level may not be for everyone, I think it may be an ideal game for youngsters, with its adorable theme fitting in beautifully with the gameplay. If you’re looking for a fun, simple Platformer for a young kid, or if the comparisons to Loco Roco sound enticing, I don’t think you’ll be disappointed with The Big Journey.

tl;dr – The Big Journey is a family-friendly Platformer with gameaply and a presentation that seem directly inspired by Loco Roco. And while this game doesn’t quite match Loco Roco’s creativity, it is nevertheless an absolute delight that’s worth seeking out if you’re a fan of that franchise, or if you’re looking for an easier Platformer for younger players.
