Ask a new question

How do I access a Team call via the safari browser?

Dear Microsoft Support Team,

I shall hope you can help me resolve an issue I have been facing. Let me give you some context to it. I worked for my previous employer who operated on Teams. I have now terminated my employment and evidently my accused to the work email was ceased. Now when I am invited to a Teams call, when I try to access it via the browser, it redirects me to sign in via my work email and the only other option it gives me is to sign up with another account. I don't wish to sign up with an account, I just want to access the call via the browser. I have deleted the Office package from my Mac but that did not help. Interesting enough I can access teams calls via Chrome but not through Safari. Can you help me understand what am I missing and perhaps what can I do to be able to connect to a Teams call via Safari?

Thank you kindly for your assistance and I look forward to your guidance.

Hello MarianaB18, I am Ibhadighi and I would happily help you with your question. In this forum, we are Microsoft consumers just like yourself. It seems like you're encountering an issue with accessing Microsoft Teams calls via Safari after leaving your previous employer. Here are some steps you can take to resolve this issue: 1. Clear Safari Cache and Cookies: • Sometimes, cached data or cookies can cause login issues. Clear your Safari browser's cache and cookies. Here's how: • Open Safari. • Go to "Safari" in the menu bar. • Select "Preferences." • Go to the "Privacy" tab. • Click "Manage Website Data..." • Search for and remove any Microsoft-related cookies or data. • Close the Preferences window and restart Safari. 2. Browser Compatibility: • Microsoft Teams may work better with certain browsers. Make sure you're using an up-to-date version of Safari, as well as an operating system compatible with Teams. 3. Check Microsoft Account: • Ensure that you're signed out of any Microsoft accounts associated with your previous employer. Go to Microsoft's account management page (account.microsoft.com) to check and sign out of any linked accounts. 4. Use Private Browsing Mode: • Try accessing Teams via Safari's Private Browsing mode. Sometimes, extensions or settings in the regular browsing mode can interfere with access. 5. Use the Teams Desktop App: • If the browser continues to pose issues, consider using the Teams desktop app if it's available for your operating system. It often provides a smoother experience. 6. Contact Your Previous Employer's IT Support: • If your previous employer's IT department manages your account, they might have settings in place that are causing this issue. You could contact them and ask if there are any restrictions or settings that need to be adjusted for your account. 7. Update Safari and Operating System: • Ensure that your Safari browser and macOS are up to date. Outdated software can sometimes cause compatibility issues. 8. Browser Extensions/Add-ons: • Sometimes, browser extensions or add-ons can interfere with the functioning of websites. Disable or try accessing Teams in a clean browser profile (without extensions) to see if this resolves the issue. 9. Use a Different Browser: • If all else fails, you can continue using Chrome or try other browsers that may work better with Teams until the issue is resolved. I hope this helps! Best regards, IBHADIGHI

3 Ways To Use Microsoft Teams On M1 & M2 Macs

Important Update: Since this article was written, Microsoft has now updated Microsoft Teams to work natively on Apple Silicon M1 & M2 Macs. You can download Teams for Apple Silicon here . Microsoft has also announced a new version of Teams 2 will be released for Mac in Summer 2023.

Limited Offer: You can currently get 77% off a Microsoft Office For Mac Home & Business Lifetime License for $49.99 (normally $219.99) for a limited period.

At the moment, there’s no native version of Microsoft Teams available for M1 Macs but here we show you some easy ways to use Microsoft Teams on Apple Silicon M1 chip Macs.

Currently, although Microsoft Office For Mac is compatible with M1 Macs, the Microsoft Teams app only works on Intel Macs and does not support the latest generation of ARM M1 chip Macs.

Eventually, it’s likely that Microsoft will release an optimized version of Teams for M1 Macs but in the meantime, there are some quick and easy workarounds you can use.

These methods work on all versions of macOS including Catalina, Big Sur and macOS 12 Monterey.

Here then are 3 easy ways to use Microsoft Teams on M1 Macs including the M1 MacBook Pro and MacBook Mini.

Quick Navigation

1. Run Teams On M1 Macs With Rosetta

2. run teams on m1 macs with microsoft edge, 3. run team on m1 macs with another browser.

microsoft teams m1 mac

You can still install and run Microsoft Teams on M1 Macs thanks to Rosetta . Rosetta 2 is a clever free tool in macOS that automatically “translates” Intel apps to work on M1 Macs.

Rosetta will automatically install on your M1 Mac when you try to install an Intel app for the first time.

Rosetta is incredibly fast at translating Intel apps like Microsoft Teams to run on M1 Macs and you won’t notice any reduction in performance.

In fact, you’ll probably find that your M1 Mac runs Teams even faster than on an Intel Mac thanks to Rosetta.

Microsoft Edge is Microsoft’s browser and the successor Internet Explorer for Mac which died many years ago.

Microsoft Edge offers Teams as a Progressive Web App (PWA) which allows you to run the Microsoft Teams app in a browser tab including on M1 Macs.

The good thing is, Microsoft Edge is compatible with M1 Macs too – it doesn’t require Rosetta – so you’re effectively running Teams natively on your M1 Mac.

It’s also just as fast as using Microsoft Teams on a Windows PC so there’s no reduction in video or audio quality.

To run Teams on an M1 Mac using Microsoft Edge follow these instructions.

  • Download and install Microsoft Edge for Mac
  • Go to the Microsoft Teams website and log into your account
  • Click the “ …” symbol and go to the Apps section and select “Install this site as an app”

microsoft teams m1 mac - microsoft edge

You’ve then got Teams on your M1 Mac running in Microsoft Edge just as well as on Intel Macs.

teams m1 mac - microsoft edge

As you might expect, Microsoft Teams also works in other browsers as a web app too on a M1 Macs including Firefox, Chrome and Safari.

It’s just that we recommend using Microsoft Edge because it turns the web version into an app on M1 Macs within Microsoft Edge for greater functionality and convenience.

Microsoft Edge is also a Microsoft product so it’s more likely to perform better and be more stable in Microsoft’s browser.

Using the web app is only mainly useful though if you want to join a meeting.

If someone sends you a Teams meeting link, when you click on it you’ll be given the option of downloading the Windows client or “Join on the web instead” which you can do on any Apple Silicon M1 chip Mac.

Some browsers offer better Microsoft Teams support than others though and you can see how the different browsers compare in features when using the Teams web client.

There are particular Team calling and meeting limitations when using Safari and Firefox with the Teams web app.

According to Microsoft these limitations are:

  • Audio is available through a PSTN connection only. Users can’t use their microphone.
  • Users can’t share their camera or see other participants’ videos but can view presented content through image-based screen sharing.
  • Users can’t share their screen, although they can see a screen that another meeting participant shares.
  • Users can’t take control during a screen sharing session.
  • Users won’t receive incoming call notifications.
  • If the call is interrupted, the meeting won’t automatically reconnect.
  • Users can’t start meetings.

It is not possible to run teams in Safari

You can run Microsoft Teams in Safari but you have to change the privacy settings by going to Preferences > Privacy  and then unchecking the Prevent cross-site tracking setting.

Apple touts major 60% leap in Safari and WebKit performance

Avatar for Chance Miller

Apple’s WebKit team has published a new blog post this week detailing how they’ve made significant upgrades to Safari’s performance over the last several months. The improvements come following the debut of Speedometer 3.0 in March, described as a “major step forward in making the web faster for all.”

Back in March, Apple, Google, and Mozilla teamed up to launch the new Speedometer 3 browser benchmark. The goal of Speedometer 3 is to “create a shared understanding of web performance so that improvements can be made to enhance the user experience.”

The results provided by Speedometer 3 offer more details on how the test “captures and calculates scores, show more detailed results and introduce an even wider variety of workloads.” Apple says:

The introduction of Speedometer 3.0 is a major step forward in making the web faster for all, and allowing Web developers to make websites and web apps that were not previously possible.

Apple’s WebKit team says that it has successfully improved Safari’s Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between the release of Safari 17.0 in September and Safari 17.4’s release in March. These improvements, Apple says, mean that developers can build websites and web apps that are faster than ever before:

With all these optimizations and dozens more, we were able to improve the overall Speedometer 3.0 score by ~60% between Safari 17.0 and Safari 17.4. Even though individual progressions were often less than 1%, over time, they all stacked up together to make a big difference. Because some of these optimizations also benefited Speedometer 2.1, Safari 17.4 is also ~13% faster than Safari 17.0 on Speedometer 2.1. We’re thrilled to deliver these performance improvements to our users allowing web developers to build websites and web apps that are more responsive and snappier than ever.

The full blog post has a ton of technical details on the work that has been done to optimize WebKit and Safari for Speedometer 3.0.

Want to get highly reliable push notifications on your Xiaomi phones? Check out How to make Teams push notifications work in your Xiaomi phone? .

Microsoft Teams can be installed on PCs, Macs, and mobile devices, and can also be accessed via a web browser. Most end users can start using Teams just by installing the client themselves. After they install the Teams client, all they need to do is sign in with their username and password.

If you're an IT Pro and want to know more about the Teams installation experience and its requirements, select a client operating system in this article for more information.

For information about each client's capabilities on different platforms, see Teams features by platform .

Desktop clients

The new Microsoft Teams desktop client is now available. The system requirements are different. For more information, see The new Microsoft Teams desktop client

The classic Teams desktop client is available as a standalone application and as part of Microsoft 365 Apps for enterprise for the following operating systems:

  • 32-bit and 64-bit versions of Windows (8.1 or later, excluding Windows 10 LTSC)
  • ARM64 for Windows 10 on ARM
  • Windows Server (2012 R2 or later)
  • Chrome OS (For more information, see How to use Microsoft Office on a Chromebook )

Desktop clients can be downloaded and installed by end users directly from https://teams.microsoft.com/downloads if they have the appropriate local permissions. Administrator permissions aren't required to install the Teams client on Windows PCs but are required on Macs.

IT Pros can choose their preferred method to distribute the installation files to computers in their organization. Some examples include Microsoft Endpoint Configuration Manager (Windows) or Jamf Pro (macOS). For more information about distributing Teams, see:

  • Windows Install Teams using Endpoint Configuration Manager
  • MacOS Jamf Pro

Distribution of the client via these mechanisms is only for the initial installation of Teams clients and not for future updates. For information about the Teams update process, see Teams update process .

Watch the following session to learn about the benefits of the Windows Desktop Client, how to plan for it, and how to deploy it: Teams Windows Desktop Client

Teams on Windows provides downloadable MSI installers in 32-bit , 64-bit , and ARM64 architectures. The x86 architecture (32 bit vs. 64 bit) of Teams is agnostic to the architecture of Windows and Office that is installed. We recommend the 64-bit version of Teams on 64-bit systems.

Teams requires .NET Framework 4.5 or later. If .NET Framework 4.5 or later isn't installed, the Teams installer will offer to install for you.

Teams isn't supported in Assigned Access mode (formerly known as Windows Kiosk mode).

The Windows client is deployed to the AppData folder located in the user’s profile. Deploying to the user’s local profile allows the client to be installed without requiring elevated permissions. The Windows client uses the following locations:

%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\Teams

%LocalAppData%\Microsoft\TeamsMeetingAddin

%AppData%\Microsoft\Teams

%LocalAppData%\SquirrelTemp

When users initiate a call using the Teams client for the first time, they might notice a warning with the Windows firewall settings that ask for users to allow communication. Users might be instructed to ignore this message because the call will work even when the warning is dismissed.

Screenshot of a Windows Security Alert dialog.

Windows Firewall configuration will be altered. Two inbound rules for teams.exe for both TCP and UDP protocols will be created with:

  • Allow action, in case the user is a local administrator and selects Allow access only.
  • Block action, if the user isn't a local administrator and, in any case, when the prompt is dismissed by selecting Cancel .

If you want to prevent Teams from prompting users to create firewall rules when the users make their first call from Teams, use the PowerShell script in Sample script - Microsoft Teams firewall PowerShell script .

Mac users can install Teams by using a PKG installation file for macOS computers. Administrative access is required to install the Mac client. The macOS client is installed to the /Applications folder.

  • From the Teams download page , under Mac , select Download .
  • Double-click the PKG file.
  • Follow the installation wizard to complete the installation. Teams will be installed to the /Applications folder. It's a machine-wide installation.

During the installation, the PKG will prompt for administrator credentials. The user needs to enter the administrator credentials, regardless of whether or not the user is an administrator.

If a user currently has a DMG installation of Teams and wants to replace it with the PKG installation, the user should:

  • Exit Teams.
  • Uninstall Teams.
  • Install the PKG file.

IT Pros can use a managed deployment solution, such as Jamf Pro, to distribute the Teams installation files to all Macs in their organization.

Mobile clients

The Teams mobile apps are available for Android and iOS; are geared for on-the-go users participating in chat-based conversations; and allow peer-to-peer audio calls. For mobile apps, go to the relevant mobile stores Google Play and the Apple App Store .

Supported mobile platforms for Teams mobile apps are:

Android : Support is limited to the last four major versions of Android. When a new major version of Android is released, the new version and the previous three versions are officially supported.

iOS : Support is limited to the two most recent major versions of iOS. When a new major version of iOS is released, the new version of iOS and the previous version are officially supported.

The mobile version must be available to the public for Teams to work as expected.

Mobile apps are distributed and updated through the respective mobile platform’s app store only. Distribution of the mobile apps via MDM or side-loading isn't supported by Microsoft. Once the mobile app has been installed on a supported mobile platform, the Teams Mobile App itself will be supported, provided the version is within three months of the current release.

If you're in China, you can install Teams from the following app stores:

  • Xiaomi https://aka.ms/TeamsXiaomi
  • Huawei https://aka.ms/TeamsHuawei
  • Vivo https://aka.ms/Teamsvivo
  • Oppo Search for "Teams" in the Oppo store
  • Baidu https://aka.ms/TeamsBaidu

When users install Teams from one of the China-based Android app stores and enable push notifications for Teams, Microsoft will provide Teams push notifications through a China-based push notification service. Currently, Microsoft supports push notifications in Xiaomi phones. Hence, you must enable the push notifications in the Xiaomi phones. For information on how to do it, see How to make Teams push notifications work in your Xiaomi phone? .

Browser client

The browser client ( https://teams.microsoft.com ) is a full, functional client that can be used from various browsers. The browser client supports Calling and Meetings by using webRTC; so there's no plug-in or download required to run Teams in a browser. The browser must be configured to allow third-party cookies.

Teams fully supports the following Internet browsers, with noted exceptions for calling and meetings. This table applies to operating systems running on desktop computers.

1 To give and take control of shared content during sharing , both parties must be using the Teams desktop client. Control isn't supported when either party is running Teams in a browser. This is due to a technical limitation that we're planning to fix.

2 Teams meetings on browsers are limited to a single stream; either incoming video feed of the current speaker or screen sharing.

3 Edge RS2 or later doesn't support sending real-time audio and video traffic through HTTP proxies.

Running Teams in a browser is supported on PCs and Macs that meet the minimum Hardware requirements for Microsoft Teams . For example, running Firefox on the Linux operating system is an option for using Teams.

On mobile devices we recommend that you use the Teams app. The Teams app is available from the Android and iOS stores.

The browser client performs browser version detection upon connecting to https://teams.microsoft.com . If an unsupported browser version is detected, it will block access to the browser interface and recommend that the user downloads the desktop client or mobile app.
