Hotels in the Maldives - King’s Island

The Maldives is a nation of islands in the Indian Ocean that comprises 1192 islands. Maldives' unique geography leaves all visitors mesmerised. There are small islands with white soft sand surrounded by clear shallow waters and reefs that are made of bands of colour. Only a few of the islands are inhabited, and a select few are resorts, while some of the islands are used for agriculture and industry. The county of Maldives attracts tourists from around the globe. And there are many resorts and Hotels in the Maldives to cater to every budget and requirement.

The Maldives has close to about five percent of the planet’s reefs that are made of a myriad of colours formed by soft and hard corals that form them. All this flora and fauna makes The Maldives an exotic tropical paradise that travellers seek out.

The unique thing about the Maldives is that one island has one resort or hotel that occupies the whole island. This means more privacy and more luxury for their visitors. The Maldives use more solar energy than diesel, making them more eco-friendly.

There are plenty of reasons for Maldives' popularity as a tourist destination. It is a breathtakingly beautiful country with crystal clear oceans and pristine beaches. Some things you can do in the Maldives include relaxing on the beaches, diving into the Coral Reef, swimming with the sharks, enjoying the cuisine, enjoying water sports, pampering yourself with spa therapy, and watching bioluminescent water under the stars. You can watch BoduBeru, the Maldivian folk dance often held during the evening on the beach. You can ride the Maldivian boat Dhoni to get acquainted with the local people and their culture. Your Trip to the Maldives: The Complete Guide

maldives trip makemytrip

Made up of nearly 1,200 coral islands strung north to south in the Indian Ocean, the Maldives is one of the most popular beach destinations on the planet. Known for world-class diving, miles of empty white-sand beaches, and resorts oozing with luxury, the Maldives isn’t always the most budget-friendly destination (though bargains can be found). But if you’re looking for mind-blowing sunsets, sugary sand, and the most turquoise water you’ve ever seen, break out your credit card and book a flight. Read on for our complete Maldives visitor’s guide, and learn the best places to stay, eat, dive, and explore in this spectacular tropical locale.

Planning Your Trip

Best Time To Visit: In true tropical island style, temperatures in the Maldives average 83 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) year-round, and there are only two main seasons; dry and wet. The dry season comes in fall and winter, from November through April, with temperatures ranging from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 89 degrees Fahrenheit (32 degrees Celsius). The low, monsoon season runs from May through October, with the wettest month usually falling in June. Temperatures in the rainy season range from 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) to 87 degrees Fahrenheit (30 degrees Celsius).

Getting Around: As an island nation spread across hundreds of miles of the ocean, it’s only natural that boats are the country’s transport mainstay, so prepare your sea legs (or Dramamine). For those staying near the capital or attempting a more budget holiday, ferries are offered between some of the more populated islands in the Malé Atoll capital area. Speedboat taxis can be hired for short-distance island hopping, and private resort speedboats whisk guests away to properties in the immediate vicinity. For resorts set in distant atolls, further transport will be via seaplane or a domestic flight to one of the more far-flung airports followed by speedboat transfer to the resort.

Travel Tip: Many visitors to the Maldives must travel by seaplane to reach their final destination, so it’s important to note that seaplanes only operate during daylight hours. If your flight arrives after dark, consider staying at a nearby hotel on either Hulhulé Island or in nearby Malé city.

Things to Do

This is a country surrounded by water, water, and more water, so it's only natural that water sports have emerged as the leading activity in the Maldives. Landlubbers can bask in the sun on deserted sandbanks, or perhaps spend the day in one of the dozens of spas dotted at upmarket resorts throughout the nation.

  • Diving: Some of the world's best diving can be found in the Maldives' coral atolls. Spot whale sharks and manta rays from May through November in the Baa Atoll UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, or dive deep with octopi and reef sharks to explore some of the area's famed shipwrecks.
  • Water sports: Snorkeling, stand-up paddle, surfing, windsurfing, sailing, kayaking, and every other water sport imaginable are available year-round. Most resorts include access to non-motorized water sports equipment, and the larger populated islands generally have water sports rental facilities.
  • Spa experiences: The Maldives is home to some of the most indulgent hotel spas in the world. These havens of tranquility offer everything from Thai massages set in overwater villas, to underwater treatment rooms, to complete detox, rejuvenation, or restoration packages. Most resorts have a spa on the property, so it's only a matter of choosing which will best suit your budget and relaxation desires.
  • Nothing: Perhaps the ultimate activity of all in the Maldives is doing absolutely nothing. This definition of "nothing" means laying on a sun lounger on one of the country's best beaches , staring into the sea-green distance while sipping ice-cold coconut water and reading a novel.

What to Eat and Drink

Maldivian cuisine borrows mainly from India and Sri Lanka, which both highlight hot, spicy flavors. But in the Maldives, what you’ll eat largely depends on where you stay. High-end resorts offer a variety of a la carte local and international fare in a host of luxurious settings, including in overwater and underwater restaurants .

Budget resorts are more likely to provide buffet meals with both Western and Asian options for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. There are also small local eateries and cafes on many of the inhabited islands, purveying specialties such as fish cakes, soups, and curries.

Alcohol is prohibited in the Maldives (except for tourists at licensed hotels and resorts), so don’t expect to wash down your curry with a beer in any of the local establishments. Many of the more upmarket resorts, however, have full bars, and even wine cellars with hundreds of vintages to choose from.

Where to Stay

If visitors stay in the city of Malé, it’s rarely for more than one night, as there’s not much going on in the capital other than commerce, a few restaurants, and a museum or two. Most visitors stay in one of the dozens of resorts, which are often set on private islands in one of the country’s myriad coral atolls.

Accommodations vary widely in the Maldives, from rustic local guesthouses to some of the world’s most expensive resorts. If you’re on a budget, there are a handful of guesthouses and small hotels in many of the inhabited islands, such as in the North Malé Atoll or Ari Atoll.

There are also a variety of all-inclusive resorts, which range widely in quality. Check out Adaaran Prestige Vadoo , which is only 20 minutes by speedboat from the airport and has overwater villas with private pools, or the chic design and five restaurants at LUX* South Ari Atoll .

The Maldives’ lineup of five-star resorts are the stuff holiday dreams are made of. Postcard-perfect beaches, overwater villas, serene spas, and private butlers are only a taste of what to expect should you choose to splurge. Some of the most popular (and expensive) options include chains such as the Four Seasons , St. Regis , and the Six Senses , plus properties like Soneva Jani , which features massive overwater villas with private pools and waterslides, or Huvafen Fushi Maldives which has the world’s first and only underwater spa.

Getting There

The gateway to the Maldives is Velana International Airport (MLE), formerly Malé International Airport, which is set on an island adjacent to the capital city of Malé. Upon arrival, the best transport mode depends on where you’re staying. A bridge connects the airport (on Hulhulé Island) to adjacent Malé city, or there are taxis, speedboat taxis, and regularly scheduled (though not always on time) ferries.

The Maldives’ seafaring past and Indian Ocean location means the remote country has been heavily influenced by its closest neighbors, India and Sri Lanka, as well as Indonesia, Malaysia, and Africa. Many visitors will only see the surroundings of their chosen resort, but the Maldives possesses cultural treasures on the local islands and in Malé that are also worth exploring.

  • One of the oldest mosques in the Maldives is the Malé Hukuru Miskiy, or Old Friday Mosque, which was built from ornately carved coral in 1658. The mosque is set on Hulhulé Island, an easy taxi ride from the airport.
  • The Maldives National Museum in Malé is a compact yet illuminating repository for the country’s prized artifacts. Displays range from ancient to modern times and contain everything from religious carvings to whale skeletons to lacquered wood boxes handmade by Maldivian craftspeople.
  • Across Sultan Park from The Maldives National Museum is The National Art Gallery. Established in 1999, this relatively new museum houses collections of Maldivian art from both past and present.

Money-Saving Tips

  • May through October is monsoon season in much of Southeast Asia, and the Maldives is no exception. Although summer can sometimes bring heavy rainfall and severe storms, most often there are only afternoon showers, and risking a visit during these monsoon months (particularly June, considered the wettest month) means deep discounts compared to visiting the country during the peak season.
  • Since alcohol is heavily taxed and marked-up in the Maldives, a drinks bill at the end of your trip can pose a hefty surprise. To keep the holiday stress-free and the umbrella drinks coming, consider choosing an all-inclusive package if you plan to indulge in adult libations during your stay.

FAQs about Maldives Tour Packages

Q. How is Maldives as a destination for solo travellers? A. Before going through Maldives packages figure out your prerogative, whether you would be travelling solo, as a couple or with your family. Interestingly, there are several packages meant exclusively for the solo traveller, for plenty of people around the world love travelling solo to The Maldives. An island most popular with backpackers is Maafushi, about 27 kilometre from the capital Male, on the South Male Atoll. The reason for the island’s popularity with backpackers and solo travellers is its vast array of opportunities and considerably low prices of accommodation. This biggish island with its population of around 3000 people is replete with little attractions and places of sightsee and, not to mention, snow-white beaches skirting an azure sea, diving sites and places to go angling in. There is a glut of plush guesthouses, holiday homes and hotels on the beach and amid scenic wilderness too, which are more budget-friendly than those you would find at more remoter beaches with a solitary resort. Backpackers love Maafushi’s Bikini Beach, the narrow strip of sand which has several seafood restaurants along with a few hotels and a dive centre. Q. What is the best season to travel to Maldives? A. Maldives tour packages can be booked round the year, but you need to be aware of the archipelago’s seasons and which most ideal for a visit. The only season in Maldives is the monsoon. But there are distinctly different monsoon it experiences; the dry and wet monsoon. The wet monsoon is typically the summer months, from May up to November, when you might find frequent rain showers and humidity through the day. The average day temperature reaches a maximum 29 degree Celsius in these months. The frequent rains lowers the water temperature making it imperfect for scuba diving or snorkelling, and with no seasonal oceanic currents you wouldn’t have any visibility for spotting marine life. But it is a good time for budget travellers since the hotel rates are significantly slashed owing to lower footfalls. The dry monsoon spell from December to April is when tourists arrive by the busloads to the Maldives. The humidity is under control in these months and the rains have nearly petered out, limited only to a light mizzle in the afternoons and night. The temperature at this time lingers between 27 and 29 degree Celsius. But since Maldives does not receive cyclones or high winds at any point, you can have a pleasant time in this tropical paradise. Q. Are there direct flights from India to Maldives? A. Before settling for one of the Maldives holiday packages you need to first book your flights and look for direct connectivity from your city to Male, the capital of the Maldives. Maldives’ closest neighbours are India and Sri Lanka, lying to the south-west of Trivandrum in Kerala and to the east-west of Sri Lanka. There are direct flights from Colombo in Sri Lanka to Male and now there are non-stop flights to the Maldives from all major Indian metros such as Chennai, Mumbai, Bangalore and Kochi. The domestic carriers that connect Indian cities to the Maldives include SpiceJet, IndiGo, AirAsia, national carrier Air India, Vistara and GoFirst, and the international airlines serving the route comprise Sri Lankan Airlines, Lufthansa, British Airways, Air France, China Southern, Qatar Airways, Emirates, Cathay Pacific, Etihad, Hong Kong Airlines to name a few. There are flights from Delhi to Male too, but it comes with a stopover in either Kochi, Bangalore or Mumbai. Q. Where exactly is the Maldives? A. The Maldives is an archipelagic country with nearly 1200 islands formed out of natural atolls. It lies on the Indian Ocean to the south-west of Kerala’s capital, Trivandrum and on the east-west side of Sri Lanka. SriLankan airlines , for instance, operates flights from Colombo that get you to Male in an hour straight. India and Sri Lanka are the Maldives’ closest neighbours. Q. What is the visa procedure for a holiday in the Maldives? A. The Maldives provides visa on-arrival to its visitors provided you hold a passport that has validity of six months and more and can produce your hotel booking voucher or invoice stating the precise dates of check-in and out, as well as your return flight ticket details. This can be done by queuing up at the immigrating counter of the Male International Airport. Q. What is an accepted currency in the Maldives? A. While the Maldivian Rufiyaa is the national currency with 1 Maldivian Rufiyaa being equal to 4.47 Indian Rupees, the USD remains the more accepted currency for tourists. Your resorts prefer you pay up for any additional services in USD. Even when pursuing water activities or boat cruises, you need to make your deposit in USD. On a trip to the Maldives, ensure you have enough USD loaded up in your multi-currency card aside from carrying a small wad of cash. Q. Can I visit the Maldives in the summer months? A. The Maldives receives two kinds of monsoon, wet monsoon and dry monsoon. In the summer months which is the wet monsoon season that lasts between May and November isn’t quite ideal for a trip because the rain showers are intense and the humidity levels are also quite high. The average temperature lingers at 29 degree Celsius in these months. It is also not the best season for scuba diving or snorkelling because the water temperatures are lower and there are no seasonal oceanic currents as well leading to reduced visibility for marine life spotting. But this may well be a good time to get some off-season rates at hotels. Q. Are there frequent flights in and out of the Maldives? A. Yes, the Maldives have emerged into a well-travelled destination across the world with regular flights in and out of the Male International Airport. Some popular airlines with flights to the Maldives include Sri Lankan Airlines, SpiceJet, GoAir, IndiGo, Air India, Air France, Emirates, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Lufthansa, Etihad, AirAsia, Qatar Airways, China Southern, Hong Kong Airlines among others. Q. What sort of electric outlet is used in the Maldives? A. In most places, you can get around with the standard UK 3-pin flat plugs. The electrical current is between 220 and 240 volts and your resort can provide you with adaptors to charge your phone or laptop batteries. But it is always good to notify them ahead of your travel. Q. How good is the Wi-Fi connectivity in the Maldives? A. All 5-star resorts provide complimentary Wi-Fi in your villa/cottage and even in a few of the public spaces. The network is usually strong enough for you to browse the net, use your social media pages, upload photos or make a Skype call. At guesthouses and more economic accommodation options, you are charged for the same. You also have the option of buying a data pack locally to not bloat up your internet bills. Q. Can I carry my alcohol with me to the Maldives? A. Not at all, in fact it is illegal to bring alcohol into the Maldives. Your resort of stay would have a special permit from its government for serving premium international liquor brands. And you can enjoy your favourite poison without any hassle. Q. Can I get a seaplane anytime I want to check into my resort in the Maldives? A. That won’t be possible because seaplanes are functional only in the daylight hours usually between 06:00 am and 04:00 pm. In case your international flights arrives post 04:00 pm, then you would have to spend the night at a nearby hotel in Male and take the earliest flight out to your atoll. Q. What is the water temperature in the Maldives? A. Owing to the Maldives tropical climate, the water temperatures stay warm through the year, hovering between 28 and 30 degree Celsius. India-Maldives Spat: EaseMyTrip Halts Bookings, MakeMyTrip Launches New Campaign

Peden Doma Bhutia , Skift

January 8th, 2024 at 4:48 AM EST

The #BoycottMaldives movement, fueled by a diplomatic dispute, should be of concern for the Maldivian government. After all, India is the archipelago's biggest tourism source market.

Peden Doma Bhutia

Indian online travel agency EaseMyTrip announced on Monday that it has suspended all flight bookings to Maldives in what its Co-Founder and CEO, Prashant Pitti, deemed was in “solidarity with the nation.”

Co-founder Prashant Pitti, wrote on LinkedIn, “Nation First Business Later. EaseMyTrip.com is letting go of 290,000 tickets that get annually booked for Maldives from India. Plus, we have made 5 beautiful packages live for Lakshadweep.”

On Monday, MakeMyTrip also announced the launch of a “Beaches of India” campaign.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by MakeMyTrip (@makemytrip)

All of Sunday #BoycottMaldives had been trending in Indian social media following a diplomatic dispute between the two countries.

There had also been social media reports of cancellations of over 8000 hotel bookings and more than 2500 flight tickets by Indians to Maldives. When Skift spoke to a few travel companies on Sunday night, no cancellations were reported. However, by Monday morning some reports of cancellations trickled in.

The Backlash

“Two couples, who were scheduled to visit Maldives, have now asked me to find some other place for their holiday. I hope in the coming weeks or days we don’t see more such reactions. What Maldives did was irresponsible and not in good taste,” said Mahendra Vakharia, managing director of Ahmedabad-based Pathfinders Holidays.

Online travel agency Yatra.com and low-cost carrier Indigo told Skift that there have been no cancellations of bookings so far.

In a letter that Skift has access to, Subhash Goyal, chairman of the aviation and tourism committee of the Indian Chamber of Commerce, appealed to all tourism trade associations to stop promoting Maldives and also asked Indian carriers to suspend operations to the archipelago.

Speaking to Skift, Goyal said, “India helped resurrect Maldives’ tourism economy during Covid and even post that, but such remarks against our Prime Minister are totally uncalled for. We at STIC Travels (Goyal’s travel company) have stopped selling Maldives with immediate effect.”

What Led to The Boycott Cry?

Indians have accused Maldivian politicians of making disparaging remarks against Prime Minister Narendra Modi, triggered by a social media controversy that emerged following Modi’s visit to the Lakshadweep islands.

Last week, Modi shared scenic pictures from his visit to the Indian archipelago of Lakshadweep on a social media platform X. In his post, the Prime Minister wrote, “For those who wish to embrace the adventurer in them, Lakshadweep has to be on your list.”

MakeMyTrip reported a 3400% increase in on-platform searches for Lakshadweep following Modi’s visit.

Over the weekend, social media tweets portrayed Modi’s Lakshadweep visit as a suggestion for Indian tourists to consider alternative domestic destinations instead of the Maldives.

One such tweet called Maldives’ new government “Chinese puppet.”

What a great move! It's a big setback to the new Chinese puppet gvt of Maldives. Also, it will boost tourism in #Lakshadweep 🔥 pic.twitter.com/gsUX9KrNSB — Mr Sinha (@MrSinha_) January 4, 2024

In response to this, three deputy ministers on X used words such as “clown” and “puppet of Israel” to refer to Modi.

In light of their comments, the Maldives government said they’ve “suspended” the three deputy ministers — Malsha Shareef, Mariyam Shiuna, and Abdulla Mahzoom Majid. Subsequently, Majid deactivated his account on X.

India: The Biggest Tourism Source Market for Maldives

India was the biggest source market for tourism into the Maldives in 2023, with over 11% share in its 1.8 million tourism arrivals, according to the tourism ministry. Last year, Maldives welcomed 209,198 Indian arrivals, narrowly beating Russia’s 209,146 arrivals.

Maldives aims to attract over 2 million tourist arrivals in 2024.  Tourism accounts for almost one-third of the Maldivian economy , according to World Bank.

The Maldives Association of Travel Agents and Tour Operators in a statement emphasized the significance to dispel any misconceptions, “The Indian market plays a pivotal role in the success of the Maldivian tourism sector, supporting guest houses and small to medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) that depend on the influx of Indian visitors.”

Highlighting that efforts to develop and foster Lakshwadeep island’s tourism sector has no discernible negative impact on the Maldives’ tourism industry, the association said, “Such development would prove complementary to Maldivian tourism, creating opportunities for both regions. The synergies between the two destinations can enhance the overall appeal for travelers and encourage more cruise liners to explore this vibrant and culturally rich region.”

Maldives’ Diplomatic Deviation

Former Maldivian President Ibrahim Solih criticized the “hateful language” employed by Maldivian government officials, emphasizing the friendship between the two countries. He urged against letting such derogatory remarks negatively impact the longstanding relationship between India and Maldives.

I condemn the use of hateful language against #India by Maldivian government officials on social media. India has always been a good friend to Maldives and we must not allow such callous remarks to negatively impact the age old friendship between our two countries. — Ibrahim Mohamed Solih (@ibusolih) January 7, 2024

The new Maldivian government, led by President Mohamed Muizzu, assumed office in November of the previous year and had initially targeted Solih’s administration for its close ties with India.

President Muizzu’s departure from traditional diplomatic protocol, choosing to visit China before India, has also attracted attention highlighting the evolving dynamics in the region. Muizzu arrived in China for a four-day visit on Monday.

Muizzu’s administration has also requested an Indian security team to leave the archipelago . Subsequently, the Maldives announced its decision not to renew a bilateral hydrographic survey agreement set to expire this year.

The dispute between India and the Maldives has primarily unfolded on social media, with no official statement from the Indian government. However, on Monday, the Maldivian envoy to India was summoned by the external affairs ministry.

MakeMyTrip Says Lakshadweep Searches Up By 3,400%, Internet Wants Maldives Bookings Suspended

PM Modi visited Lakshadweep on January 3.

Online travel company MakeMyTrip said in a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Monday that it has seen more than 3,400 per cent jump in searches related to Lakshadweep since Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the island and added that the company is launching a special campaign for India's "stunning beaches". However, the users of the social media platform were not impressed by the statistics and instead asked the company to suspend booking to Maldives over the derogatory remarks made by some of the country's ministers against PM Modi.

In the X post, shared as a news flash, MakeMyTrip announced, "We have observed a 3400% increase in on-platform searches for Lakshadweep ever since Honorable PM's visit."

"This interest in Indian beaches has inspired us to launch a 'Beaches of India' campaign on the platform with offers and discounts to encourage Indian travellers to explore country's stunning beaches. Keep watching this space!" it further said.

Within an hour, the post amassed more than 3,000 views and the number kept increasing as more and more users posted comments demanding removal of Maldives as a destination on the platform.

"Cancel flights and tickets to Maldives. That's the only option you have, else switching to EaseMyTrip," commented one user.

Another user tagged MakeMyTrip CEO Deep Kalra and said, "Do you have the will to stop Maldives' bookings or will you make hay since your smaller competitor has stopped it? Though I am an MMTBlack member, I will be using @EaseMyTrip a lot more given their bold step."

Earlier on Monday, EaseMyTrip co-founder and Executive Director Prashant Pitti said bookings to the Maldives were suspended "indefinitely" .

India and Russia send the largest number of visitors to the Maldives, a chain of islands in the Indian Ocean that is home to many luxury resorts. Tourism accounts for almost one-third of its economy, according to the World Bank.

The controversy over comments by three now-suspended Maldivian ministers about PM Modi comes just as President Mohamed Muizzu embarks for China on his first state visit from January 8-12, breaking from the convention of most Maldivian leaders choosing New Delhi to be their first international port of call.

All’s fair in love and war — and business.

EaseMyTrip has been highlighting the Chinese ownership of its biggest competitor MakeMyTrip since the Maldives-Lakshadweep row broke out, hoping to get users to switch to its services instead. EaseMyTrip CEO Nishant Pitti shared a post on X which highlighted the directors listed on MakeMyTrip’s website, of which two were Chinese. “So the company MakeMyTrip will never suspend their operations for Maldives because they have CHINESE board of directors! We have to see where it’s loyalty lies to Indian Pride or the Chinese Stooges. Support EaseMyTrip who has more Nationalistic Sentiments!” a post by a social media user said. Pitti shared the post, while adding a “Got it” of his own.

maldives trip makemytrip

It’s unclear if it was Pitti’s post that was the catalyst, but #UninstallMakeMyTrip soon began trending, with Indian users urging each other to uninstall the MakeMyTrip app. Several pledged to never use MakeMyTrip again, and said they’d instead switch to EaseMyTrip, which was fully Indian-owned. Soon people began sharing memes with tags like Vocal for Local with pictures of MakeMyTrip’s Chinese directors. Over 1 lakh tweets with the hashtag #UninstallMakeMyTrip were shared yesterday.

maldives trip makemytrip

What brought about this situation was the snowballing of a simple visit to the Lakshadweep islands by Indian PM Narendra Modi. As the picturesque shots from his visit went viral, some Indian social media users began urging other Indians to visit Lakshadweep instead of foreign alternatives like Maldives. This wasn’t taken to kindly by some ministers in the Maldives government, who responded with disparaging remarks about “smelly” and dirty hotel rooms in India, and said that Lakshadweep could never hope to compete with Maldives. Some of these Ministers’ earlier Hinduphobic tweets with references to cow-dung were also unearthed, and this led to Indians netizens calling for a boycott of travel to Maldives. As the Maldives government scrambled to make amends, first distancing itself from the ministers who’d made the remarks and then suspending them, travel portal EaseMyTrip made the most of the situation by saying that it was suspending all flight bookings to Maldives.

This was wildly appreciated on Indian social media, and Nishant Pitti’s stance went viral. The results have already shown on the stock markets and EaseMyTrip’s stock has risen more than 10 percent over the last two days. But social media users noticed that while EaseMyTrip had suspended all flight bookings to Maldives, its bigger competitor MakeMyTrip hadn’t done so. Many took this to be an outcome of MakeMyTrip’s Chinese holdings — Maldives currently has a pro-China government, and users thought that MakeMyTrip’s stance was being dictated by their Chinese owners.

While it’s unclear why MakeMyTrip didn’t suspend flight bookings to Maldives, it certainly has a sizable Chinese stake in its business. In 2019, China-based CTrip had acquired a 49 percent stake in MakeMyTrip after its original South African investor Naspers had exited. And EaseMyTrip seems to be capitalizing on this fact as it looks to draw users away from its chief rival.

And it might be a smart strategy to do so. MakeMyTrip is India’s largest bookings platform with a 55 percent market share, followed by EaseMyTrip at around 8 percent. Travel bookings is a largely commoditized business, and the prices and user experiences on different platforms are now largely the same. As such, EaseMyTrip appears to be using its homegrown swadesi card to compete against its bigger China-owned rival. And with India-China relations the way they have been over the last few years, the move might actually get plenty of Indians to switch from MakeMyTrip to an Indian alternative.

Lakshadweep vs Maldives: MakeMyTrip Faces Social Media Backlash, Uninstall Threats

  • January 9, 2024

In the midst of India’s diplomatic tensions with Maldives, Lakshadweep vs Maldives: MakeMyTrip Faces Social Media Backlash, Uninstall Threats travel giant MakeMyTrip finds itself entangled in a social media storm, drawing criticism and uninstall threats from users. Despite openly endorsing the government’s initiatives to boost Lakshadweep, the platform is under fire for allegedly not aligning with India’s nationalistic causes.

Unwarranted Backlash Amid Lakshadweep’s Spotlight

Ever since Prime Minister Narendra Modi shared captivating snapshots of his Lakshadweep visit on social media, there has been a surge in interest surrounding India’s smallest union territory. However, this newfound attention has also triggered a geopolitical dispute between India and Maldives, marked by disparaging remarks from some Maldivian ministers aimed at the PM and the Indian populace.

Social Media Calls for Boycotting Maldives

Social media platforms, particularly X, are abuzz with calls to “boycott Maldives,” gaining support even from Bollywood stars who echo the PM’s efforts to promote Lakshadweep. Notably, travel platform EaseMyTrip took a decisive stance by halting all flights to Maldives in solidarity with the nation.

Co-Founder Nishant Pitti expressed the company’s position on Twitter: “In solidarity with our nation, @EaseMyTrip has suspended all Maldives flight bookings. #TravelUpdate #SupportingNation.”

MakeMyTrip Under Scrutiny

Amidst the fervor, MakeMyTrip has become a target for online trolls due to its perceived inaction. Accusations range from the platform’s alleged affiliation with China, suggesting Chinese executives on its board, to not following suit in suspending Maldives bookings.

Despite the online campaign with hashtags such as #UninstallMakeMyTrip, MakeMyTrip has yet to halt Maldives bookings. Some users are expressing their solidarity with EaseMyTrip’s decision while urging others to join in uninstalling MakeMyTrip.

The Social Media Uproar

The controversy has spilled onto social media, with users sharing posts and tweets advocating for the uninstallation of MakeMyTrip. The sentiments expressed highlight a perceived failure on the part of MakeMyTrip to align with national interests.

It’s worth noting that MakeMyTrip has not released an official statement addressing the situation. However, the platform has shared posts on social media expressing support for the government’s endeavors to promote Indian beaches.

Maldives Fallout: MakeMyTrip, Ixigo clock massive spike in searches for Lakshadweep

Travel companies and tour operators say that lakshadweep has the potential to emerge as a top tourist destination but needs infrastructure uplift..

It warned that relevant authorities of the Government will not hesitate to take action against those who make such derogatory remarks.

Travel platform TravClan registered a 3x surge in search for hotels especially for Agatti Islands over the past week

Travel platforms and tour operators are seeing a spike in searches and enquiries for Lakshadweep after Prime Narendra Modi visited the beach destination.

Online travel aggregators (OTA) Ixigo and MakeMyTrip have recorded 2,900 percent and 3,400 percent respectively in on-platform searches for Lakshadweep.

"Our government’s call to explore India's gems has sparked a tremendous wave of interest and this remarkable spike resonates with the nation's eagerness to explore the hidden treasures of India," said Aloke Bajpai, Co-founder & Group CEO, Ixigo.

People are curious following Prime Minister Modi's visit to Lakshadweep, said Sandeep Arora, Director, Brightsun Travel. "The captivating photos from his trip, showcasing the islands' pristine beauty, have sparked widespread interest. This has led many to actively inquire about holiday opportunities there, flight options and where to stay. We are getting a lot of calls asking if Lakshadweep is a good option for a beach holiday and about the packages available including hotels and flight prices," he said.

Another travel platform TravClan registered a 3x surge in search for hotels especially for Agatti Islands over the past week, said the platform's Co-founder, Chirag Agrawal.

"I recall something similar was done for Kerala by our late PM A B Vajpayee when he once spent his vacations there and since then Kerala has grown in terms of tourism," said Rajiv Mehra, President, Indian Association of Tour Operators(IATO).

Travel logistics

The best time to visit Lakshadweep is between October to February, said P P Khanna, Board Member, Federation of Associations in Indian Tourism & Hospitality (FAITH). "Since this is the peak season, the most loved tourist places to explore in Lakshadweep are Andretti, Agatti and Minicoy," he added.

Travellers need to apply for the Protected Area Permit (PAP) online through the e-permit portal of the Lakshadweep Administration and it is valid for 30 days from the date of issue, pointed out travel influencer Tanya Khanijow in a post on X.

She further pointed out the air travel cost. "Flights from Delhi to Kochi costs Rs 12,000 for a round trip. Inter-island transfers via a ferry range from Rs 4,000-8,000 per person for two-way. Budget accommodation in Agatti Island costs Rs 1,500-2,500 per night and luxury stay will cost Rs 9,000 per night (all-inclusive). Activities like water sports including snorkeling starts at Rs 1,000, scuba diving at Rs 3,500, and fishing tours at Rs 1,000. Island tours cost around Rs 1,000-1,500 per person."

To reach the island, one needs to land at Kochi airport and then take a bus or a ferry, noted Atul Thakkar, Director – Investment Banking, Anand Rathi Advisors Ltd who tracks the travel industry. "Lakshadweep airport at Agatti has limited flights. In the last 18 months, there are cruise ships starting from Mumbai to Lakshadweep which have seen significant traction among high end tourists."

Travel costs to Lakshadweep start from Rs 22,999 for a three-night package including hotel and sightseeing, among others, and go as high as Rs 53,999 per head for a five-night package on EaseMyTrip. Notably, the company announced the launch of five new packages for the destination on January 8.

"Currently direct flights are primarily from Kochi and there are limited hotels at the moment. Over the last two years, we have seen people traveling to Lakshadweep primarily as part of their cruise itinerary. Travelers get down for a day trip and then come back on the cruise. We believe that as the tourism infrastructure grows, there will be more demand for multi-day leisure trips to the islands," said TravClan's Agrawal.

Over the last two years, there has been a notable increase in people choosing Lakshadweep as a travel destination, said Alok K Singh, Co-founder and CEO, Travomint.

"Lakshadweep, until recently, has been a destination accessible to only a select few due to the requirement of an entry permit. However, a noticeable shift has occurred in the past two years, as the islands have gained traction on social media platforms, particularly Instagram. Influencers, captivated by its azure waters and pristine white sand beaches, have flocked to Lakshadweep, creating a buzz and piquing the interest of a wider audience. To fully capitalise this, there is a crucial need for improved accessibility," said Arora.

Need for more connectivity, hotels

He added that to fully harness the potential of this archipelago, the government needs to prioritise and enhance the region's infrastructure. "There is a crucial need for improved accessibility. If regular and affordable flights, coupled with a range of quality hotel options are made available then Lakshadweep has the potential to emerge as a preferred alternative to international destinations like the Maldives."

There are no major resorts or hotels in Lakshadweep, noted Sanjay Dang, managing director of Le Travelworld.

India’s largest hospitality company, Indian Hotels Company (IHCL) in January last year announced the signing of two Taj-branded resorts on the islands of Suheli and Kadmat in Lakshadweep. The Greenfield projects are slated to open in 2026 and will be developed by IHCL.

Dipti Varma Narain, Founder of The Silver Surfers Travel Club, a travel community who recently experienced a cruise travel to Lakshadweep said, "I must admit that Agatti island is truly surreal with its powdery white shores, turquoise waters, and enchanting sunsets. The warmth of the friendly locals is unforgettable. However, the island faces significant shortcomings in terms of hotels, restaurants, and infrastructure."

Amid the discussion around promoting Lakshadweep tourism, photographer and producer, Atul Kasbekar posted on X about his experience of travel to Maldives. "While the ocean and the diving are genuinely fantastic, the reality is that the local hotels were seriously not up to par, in fact very substandard. As far as tourist leisure facilities are concerned, there weren’t any. We should by all means promote our islands. But it will need some serious work in terms of facilities, if they are to be a serious holiday consideration for travellers from India and other parts of the planet," he said.

FAITH's Khanna said that currently to visit an island, tourists need to have permission from authorities, which takes almost 25 days and this is a big hurdle. "There are possibilities of developing this archipelago into a world-class tourist destination and there will be a shift of domestic tourists to these places once all infrastructure is in place."

Other infrastructure like restaurants, transport, and sea sports are also not developed, said Rajiv Mehra, President, Indian Association of Tour Operators (IATO). "For tourism to prosper, we need these vital things in place. However, since PM Modi has directly pitched for boosting tourism in Lakshadweep, I am sure the government will do all that is required to boost tourism," he added.
