Going to Tam Dao to relax, take a long rest with purely fresh air, contemplate the open sky with free-flying clouds, eat delicious local foods, and freely walk on sloping roads are all enjoyable weekend activities.

Tam Dao Weather

Although average temperatures in Tam Dao vary greatly, the weather is generally pleasant all year. If you want to visit Tam Dao during the hottest months, the hottest months are June, July, and August, when the highs are consistently around 33.8oC. You should look at the weather and temperature forecasts by season below to make a specific and reasonable plan for your trip.

Tam Dao Weather

Spring (March through May)

This season feels warm because of the combination of humidity and temperatures. The temperature ranges from 33.8 to 20.8 degrees Celsius. Rain is possible on 5 to 11 days per month, with the possibility of significant precipitation. Spring is the slowest season for tourism and should be on the list of those looking for good deals.

Summer (June through August)

The temperatures remain high during these months, but much lower than in the town and city, making this a pleasant time for tourism. Precipitation is still possible between 8 and 16 days per month. However, because this is the second busiest season for tourism, prices rise slightly.

Fall (September through November)

The weather is ideal during these months, with temperatures ranging from 31.2oC to 23.1oC. As a result, this is always the busiest time of year. As a result, hotel rates may be higher.

Getting to and around Tam Dao

Tam Dao is approximately 80 kilometers from Hanoi and will take approximately two hours to travel from the capital. There are numerous options for getting there:

From Hanoi, take Thang Long Bridge in the direction of North Thang Long Noi Bai (the road to Noi Bai Airport), then continue for about 25 kilometers to the crossroads of National Highway 2, AH14, and Road No. From Thang Long to Noi Bai, take Highway 2 for about 500m, then the Hanoi-Lao Cai Expressway for about 25km to the Tam Duong, Vinh Phuc turning point, then the 2B National Highway for about 20km to the Tam Dao tourism area.

It can also be reached by bus. Take Bus 58 or Bus 07 from Hanoi to Mê Linh Plaza, then transfer to Vinh Phuc’s Bus 01 to reach Vinh Yên Bus Station. From there, take Bus 07 to the Tam Dao mountain base. Each bus ticket is only VND 7,000 (USD 0.35). This is frequently regarded as a low-cost method of getting to Tam Dao. However, because buses stop at multiple points to pick up passengers, the journey can easily take several hours. Furthermore, they only go as far as the mountain’s base, so you’ll still need to book a ride-hailing driver to take you to the top.

By motorbike

Follow the same path as the private car road. The 13km small path with many Z-shaped sections and a large slope should be noted. In these situations, you must exercise extreme caution.

Take any of the Hanoi – Viet Tri, Hanoi – Yen Bai, or Hanoi – Vinh Yen coaches from My Dinh coach station. The ticket price is 50,000 VND. These vehicles come to a halt in Vinh Yen. To get to Tam Dao, take a taxi or a motorbike taxi (about 20 kilometers).

You can take the Hanoi – Lao Cai train from Hanoi or Gia Lam station to Vinh Yen station for 35,000 VND. Then a taxi or a motorcycle taxi will be your next mode of transportation.

Tam Dao National Park – Vinh Phuc Province

In the mountains outside of Hanoi, in northwest Vietnam, visitors can find the Tam Dao National Park. Encompassing the Tam Dao Mountain Range, this national park was once a popular resort area for French colonists.

Today, the park continues to have a flurry of human and animal activity. Boasting both remote and developed areas, the national park is an ideal location for travelers looking to head out of the big city and enjoy the Vietnamese countryside.

Suitable for a day trip from Hanoi , Tam Dao National Park is only 53 miles outside of Vietnam’s capital city. The national park protects over 91,000 acres of land and borders three provinces: Thai Nguyen , Vinh Phuc, and Tuyen Quang.

Developed sections of the park include the heavily visited town of Tam Dao and the Tay Thien area. The town once served as a hotspot for French colonists, meanwhile, Tay Thien is famous for its temple and pagodas.

The name Tam Dao is derived from the three nearby mountains that stand like islands as they rise above the clouds: Thien Thi, Thach Ban, and Phu Nghia. All of these peaks are more than 3,300 feet (1,005 meters) tall and are one of the reasons French colonists were attracted to the area during the early 20 th century.

Having fallen in love with Tam Dao, the colonists built villas throughout the countryside. These buildings eventually formed the Tam Dao town, which was established in 1907. A second town called Tam Dao 2 was created near Rung Rinh Peak, but it ultimately failed to flourish.

Mountains in Tam Dao Vietnam

The popularity of the town led the Vietnamese government to create the Conservation Forest Tam Dao in 1977, with Tam Dao being officially recognized as a national park in 1996. Throughout the park’s history, Tam Dao has remained a popular tourist destination, great for a short holiday away from Hanoi.

Featuring well-established tourist sites and eight different types of forest, including artificial and natural, there is a lot to explore in the national park. Visitors can also stay overnight in the town of Tam Dao before heading off to the park’s more remote regions.

An Ideal Holiday

Tam Dao Town in Northwest Vietnam

A mere 6.2 miles away from the national park is the town of Tam Dao. Part of the Vinh Phuc Province, this town was built by French colonists in the early 1900s. Most of the 200 buildings are still standing, providing housing for overnight tourists.

Highlights in Tam Dao town include the night market, outdoor swimming pool, telecommunication tower, temple, and Thac Bac – the Silver waterfall. All of these activities are located in or close by to the town, although, Some, like the telecommunication tower, are harder to access than others.

Image of Tam Dao looking through a stone window in Vietnam

For activities just outside of town, visitors can hire a motor taxi or regular taxi to transport them to their destination. In Tam Dao, most of the town’s features will have paths or roads that are safe to walk along, which means that paying for transportation is not necessary.

To the Temple

The second well-developed tourist area in Tam Dao is Tay Thien. Featuring the Tay Thien Quoc Mau Temple, which translates as the ‘Temple of East Heaven National Mother’, this area is known for its tranquility. Alongside the temple, there are several pagodas.

The temple and nearby structures play a central part in Vietnamese Buddhism. Truc Lam Tay Thain Zen Monastery is home to Buddhist monks and open to the public. With large gates and an annual festival, the monastery has become a popular tourist destination where visitors can study Vietnamese Buddhist culture.

Spread throughout the mountainside, there are seven structures that tourists can visit. Some of these include the monastery and several temples while others, like the Banyan Nine Tree, are scenic areas. Visitors can walk between all of the buildings or buy a ticket for either the tram or cable car.

Take a Hike

Visitors who want to escape the crowds of Tam Dao and Tay Thien will enjoy the park’s more remote, isolated areas. While short hikes between temples or to nearby waterfalls are suitable for travelers of any age, remote trails in the park are often best left to experienced trekkers.

Unlike other national parks or conservation areas in Vietnam, Tam Dao has not been touched by agriculture. Instead of seeing rice paddies or tea plantations, those who venture deep into the park will be met with diverse wilderness areas.

Image of the mountains in Tam Dao National Park

From evergreen forests to high mountains, bamboo forests, and lowland bush terrain, there are plenty of opportunities to stroll through Tam Dao’s natural beauty. With a cooler year-round climate, hikers will enjoy taking a break from the hot and humid weather that frequently blankets the country.

Hiking tours are the best way to explore Tam Dao and local guides can be hired at the hotels in town. While some walking trails are well marked, weather often changes the visibility and condition on the paths. Local guides are an excellent resource for travelers and they can be booked for overnight adventures.

See the Bears

Moon bears have helped make Tam Dao famous due to the Vietnam Bear Rescue Center sitting high in the hills surrounding the town. Officially a part of the national park, this center offers a unique experience and is a favorite amongst traveling families.

The center focuses on rescuing, rehabilitating, and educating visitors about Vietnam’s bears.

Many of the 200 bears that are housed from the sanctuary were rescued from the bile harvesting industry. By visiting the sanctuary, tourists can help spread the word of this harmful industry and promote the protection of these special animals.

Plants and Wildlife

Seeing a wild bear in Tam Dao National Park is unlikely, but there are plenty of other plant and animal species that you might encounter on your journey. Growing in the park are over 2,000 plant species including rare woods and unique floras. Some of these plant species can only be found in the national park.

Image of lush green mountains in Tam Dao National Park in Vietnam

Living amongst the plants are nearly 900 species of animals, many of which can only be found in the park, including birds , reptiles , amphibians , and insects. The Amphiesma angeli and Boiga multitempolaris, for example , are two types of snakes that are unique to the national park.

Visitors who want to observe Tam Dao’s wildlife will have the best chances by hiring a guide. Due to the popularity of Tam Dao town and Tay Thien, most of the animals live deep within the park and local guides can help navigate to the more remote areas.

How to Get There

Tam Dao National Park is one of the closest untouched areas outside of Hanoi. With no agricultural development and only two resort areas, the vast majority of this national park has been left wild. About 1 hour and 15 minutes outside of Hanoi, Tam Dao National Park is easy to access.

Image of the Tam Dao village in Tam Dao National Park, Vietnam

Travelers from Hanoi can hire a private driver, rent a car, or use local transportation to get from Hanoi to Tam Dao. Another option is to take the train. Being a short distance, travelers can easily take a day trip to Tam Dao, however, with the availability of hotels and restaurants in the town, the national park is also an ideal destination for a weekend getaway.

Local transportation in the town of Tam Dao and Tay Tien is available. Once you are within the park boundaries, access becomes more restricted and due to the underdevelopment of the land in Tam Dao, visitors should be prepared to walk through most of the park.

When to Visit

Located north of Hanoi, Tam Dao National Park is often described as having a cool climate throughout the year. Mostly escaping the high heat that settles in Hanoi, the park is a welcome relief during the year’s hottest months.

Image of the castle at Tam Dao, Vietnam

June, July, and August are when temperatures soar in Vietnam, but in Tam Dao, the air is slightly cooler. Due to the climate and more people having vacation time, summer is one of the most popular seasons for Tam Dao. Fall is also busy as the cool and dry climate is ideal for hikers.

Spikes in tourism to the park are at their highest from September to November, as rainfall is less frequent. If you’re trying to avoid the rain , and the crowds, the driest time to visit is during the winter months, from December to May.

Quiet Getaway

Balancing a mix of resort tourism and remote adventures, Tam Dao National Park is an all-encompassing destination. Ideal for those looking to escape Hanoi for a few days, the park’s list of activities is nearly endless. From the quiet streets within the town of Tam Dao to the winding jungle paths, Tam Dao National Park is a truly alluring site.

Tam Dao has thrived with popularity as a Dalat of the North, but few travelers know about the existence of a more gentle kind of spooky attraction of this land. It calls for the name Tam Dao National Park.

tam dao travel size

The park mends its way through a vast green land of three provinces, opened for preservation and tourism purposes. With a total area of about 35.000 ha, mainly green forests, it is the largest ecological park in all Northern regions. Thanks to staying low under the tourist radar, Tam Dao National Park keeps its best conditions for adventure-souls.

The park is nestled inside Tam Dao ranges, with areas stretching to three provinces, Vinh Phuc, Thai Nguyen, and Tuyen Quang. It is 70km north of Hanoi and 1.5km far from the Tam Dao town center. The park stays rather close to residential areas but is still able to maintain its quietness. The topography of Tam Dao National Park is characterized by 20 sharp peaks and very steep slopes, with an altitude over 1000m. The huge mountain reaches a length of 80km in the Northwest - Southeast direction and is divided into two distinct zones, East and West. The climate between the two sees big differences because of the dissimilar rainfall.

The land's diverse climate has led to its richness in ecosystems, flora, and fauna abundance.

In particular, vegetation varies with over 1200 species. A few prominent types can be mentioned, such as Kim Giao (Nageia fleuryi), Lim Xanh (Erythrophleum fordii), Kim Tuyen orchid, Rau Hum (Tacca chantrieri), etc. Some are rare wood, while some declare medical uses. There are 42 types endemic to Tam Dao and 64 others rare to many places.

tam dao travel size

Meanwhile, Tam Dao park inhabits over 163 fauna species, some of which embrace high scientific values such as swordtail butterfly, ray-finned fish, flying squirrel, silver pheasant, and especially Tonkin leaf monkey (white-cheeked black monkey.

In all, the ecosystem of Tam Dao National Park sure holds valuable values to human life.

Trekking along the lost tracks

Those who once finished Tam Dao National Park route all admit that the trekking here is unique and worth the exploration. Some may relish this experience more than conquering Mount Fansipan. Returning in one day or extending the stay overnight by camping are both possible. However, as the path is adventurous, it is also easy to get lost. A professional guide is a must during your trekking.

tam dao travel size

The first thing to touch your senses may be the clean air and chill winds. The surroundings are made of greens and clouds, among nature marking ideally for a relaxing and recharged trip. Thanks to the natural terrain and high humidity, the primitive forests wear a fantasy look by hundreds of giant old trees surfaced by thin moss from roots to tops.

The green forest constantly changes appearance from high tropical rain trunks, to low trees and bushes. You may cross arches of conifers, corridors of green vine-roads along the way. Reaching the top peak - two famous ones are Thien Thi and Thach Ban - you will see tremendous straight-stand bamboo.

All vehicles are banned from trespassing the forest. With the protection of climate and without the disturbance of engines, Tam Dao National Park is secluded enough for a comfortable trekking trip.

Visiting national park attractions

During your trekking trip, you can pass by numerous attractions. Or better yet, set a route to specific sites from the beginning to enjoy your desired experience.

For nature wonders, there are Silver Fall, Heaven Gate, Xa Huong Lake and Rung Rinh Peak, and many more. Human works include Ba Chua Thuong Ngan (Forest Mother) Temple, Vietnam bears rescue center, Tam Dao town, etc. Among them, Tam Dao TV station, situated on a high peak, stands out with romantic scenery.

With a close distance to Hanoi, it is easy to visit Tam Dao National Park in one day. It only takes a maximum of 2 hours on bus, car, motorbike, taxi, or train to get here.

  • Newway and Tien Thinh: the company provides round-trip service between Hanoi and Tam Dao by 200.000 per person. Buses are departed from My Dinh bus station.
  • Nhat Nam: Pick-up and drop-off places are based on agreement.
  • Public bus: 07/58 Hanoi bus connects Cau Giay/ Long Bien to Tam Dao. From Vinh Phuc stop, continue to ride on 01 or 07 Vinh Phuc bus to Tam Dao mountain foot. Then call for a taxi to your destination. Consider Mai Linh, Huy Hoang, and Thinh Hung brands.

By private vehicles

Travel by private car or motorbike is the most flexible means to Tam Dao National Park. Starting from Hanoi city center, follow Noi Bai international route or Me Linh Road (toll fee included), then continue with Highway 5 (Noi Bai - Lao Cai express), and turn to 2B National Road after seeing Vinh Yen city. Trust the road signs and you will arrive in no time.

However, as the mountain roads have many sharp turns, and high slopes, be careful of your speed and beware of the opposite vehicles. By train

With only 35.000 VND you can catch a Hanoi - Lao Cai train and stop by Vinh Yen station. It takes about 45 minutes from the station, by taxi or bus to Tam Dao Park.

Long way taxis are also available, but the price can be high compared to other transportations, about 1.000.000 VND one turn.

The park receives weather benefits from the high altitude. The temperature can be said to be comfortable almost every month with high humidity.

Covered in greenery, this park is an ideal place for novice trekkers and climbers.

tam dao travel size

The best time to visit Tam Dao National Park is from June to August. While other provinces in the North suffer from heatstroke, Tam Dao remains chilly with a clear sky and bright sun. The park shall make a perfect summer get-away. Remember to check the weather forecast to avoid rainy days. Avoid traveling to the park from November to March. In winter, the park is covered in thick fog, making forest paths treacherous to conquer.

The specialty of Tam Dao is Su Su (chayote). A green type of cooking vegetables that are grown everywhere on the land. It contributes to many dishes of the locals, but the most delicious is stir-fried chayote and garlic.

Other than chayote, coming to Tam Dao National Park, travelers can visit local restaurants or the night market and order black pork kebab, grilled potatoes or eggs, Com Lam (bamboo sticky rice), and ground-buried chicken.

To make the most out of your national park trip, you can consider spending a night camping under the stars. This stay is highly recommended after a sweating day. Noisy cities sound and unspeakable pressures can be rid of by the serene nature. But remember only set out your tools in the allowed areas and stay away from the fire. Book beforehand with the park management authorities.

There are many standard hotels located in the center of town. You can book for Sofia, Hanviet, Royal Huy, etc. Villa/ homestay can also be a fantastic accommodation option for your trip and maybe a more leisure one. Le Bleu, Dream House, Ca Rem, Cloudy Garden, Up in the Air, and writer Nguyen Quy Duc homestay are some center-located examples.

  • Raincoats or water-proof outfits are recommended to keep warm and dry due to low temperature and high humidity
  • It is advised to bring along to prevent cold and other forest diseases.
  • Follow your travel group. Never walk alone
  • Location: Vinh Yen Of Vinh Phuc Province
  • Best for: Family, couple
  • Entrance: Free
  • Hours: All hours
  • Distance to city center: 0.0km (0.0 mi)

Tam Dao National Park, Vinh Phuc

Linh

Rising steeply from densely populated lowlands to a peak of 1529m above sea‑level, the forests support a large variety of ecosystems and micro‑habitats of high biodiversity, varying with altitude, aspect and the degree of human disturbance.

In its original state, Tam Dao had one of the highest levels of species richness of any tropical forest with about 1,300 plant and 1,200 animal species, many of which are rare to Tam Dao or northern Vietnam.

Therefore, located only about 70km northwest of Hanoi, rather close to the urban area, Tam Dao National Park is one of the last natural areas which has not been transformed into agricultural land.

I. Highlights of Tam Dao National Park

Tam Dao National Park Overview

Tam Dao National Park is based in the Tam Dao range , which is one of the terminal spurs of a larger mountainous area. It runs 80 km from north west to south east, and has more than 20 peaks with altitudes of over 1000m.

The highest summit is Tam Dao North with an altitude of 1592m. 3 other peaks with beautiful scenery are Thien Thi at 1375m, Thach Ban at 1388m and Phu Nghia at 1300m. Sharp peaks with sloping sides and numerous, deep partitions are characteristic of the topology.

Tam Dao National Park Highlights

The boundary of the national park is located at an altitude of 100 m around the Tam Dao range. There is a larger buffer zone (535 km 2 ) surrounding the national park with an altitude below 100m. Seventy per cent of the area of the park is covered by natural and artificial forests. The natural forest is about 220 km 2 and the human altered one is about 30 km 2 .

Due to the tall mountainous range that splits the area into two parts, the national park’s climatic condition is divided into two areas with different rainfall. This difference and some other factors such as the effect of human activity divide the park into some smaller climatic zones which increase the biodiversity in the park.

II. Biodiversity Values

Tam Dao National Park Flora

Tam Dao National Park is covered by a rich flora consisting of 490 species the high classes belonging to 344 genera and 130 families. Tam Dao National Park Fauna

The National Park is the habitat of diversified fauna, with 281 species 80 families and 26 orders, belonging to 4 main classes: animals birds reptiles and amphibians ones including many rare and valuable species which are high commercial value and at the same time of important scientific research significance: white-cheeked black monkey, snake-headed fish, silver pheasant, wood grouses, etc…

When visiting the park, you will have a chance to view a lot of spectacular places that are located nearby.

1. Tam Dao Town

Tam Dao National Park Town

Established at the beginning of the 20 th century, Tam Dao is considered to be miniature Dalat or Sapa in the North of Vietnam. It is nestled in a valley covering only 3 km 2 , ranging over 900m above the sea level. There now remain some villas and palaces built by French colonists combining both traditional and modern style of new buildings.

The reason why people call it Tam Dao is because it has 3 mountains named Thien Thi (at 1375m), Thach Ban (1388m) and Phu Nghia (1400m), which rise above the clouds like 3 islands.

In the area of Tam Dao town, there is Thac Bac (The Silver Fall), Rung Rinh Peak and Tam Dao 2, a remnant of another resort built many years ago.

Tam Dao National Park Thac Bac

Silver fall is 50m high and is said to be the most stunning waterfall in Tam Dao. So as to get to Silver Fall, you need to go along a trail that is down to a very deep valley. Then, the waterfall will appear right in front of your eyes. It is great to see a beautiful view of the waterfall surrounding the valleys.

On Rung Rinh peak, there are lots of gigantic trees covered by moss and orchids, majestic mountains and birds singing. Meanwhile, Tam Dao-2 is a wild and lonely place, which is ideal for activities requiring concentration like meditation.

2. Tay Thien Site

Tam Dao National Park Tay Thien Site

This area covers about 148 hectares in a biosphere of almost 300 wildlife species and 500 plants. The weather here is so special. There are 4 distinct seasons within a day: spring breeze at sunrise, warm sunshine summer light at noon, pleasing fall atmosphere in the afternoon and chilly air at night.

Here, there is Thien Vien Truc Lam Tay Thien, which is among the biggest monasteries in Vietnam. It was constructed in 2009 with so many ancient architecture of temples and pagodas.

Tam Dao National Park Thien Vien

A spectacular piece of Buddhism architectural art is the Great Precious Tower. This 3-storey tower is 37m in height and is located on the left side of Tam Quan Gate. According to Buddhism, the Great Precious Tower consists of 5 elements of tranquilness namely air, earth, fire, wind, earth and the spirit of enlightenment as well.

Trinh or Thong temple is an entrance to Thuong temple on the peak of the mountain. Built in 1998, this temple is famous for its unique location overviewing a big banyan tree together with such a huge root. There is a bell, 4 stone steles, a bronze plaque, parallel sentences and lacquered boards inside the temple.

Cau Temple is next to Thong Temple. It is large and is an ideal place for people to come to pray for luck, wealth and longevity.

Topography and hydrology

Tam Dao National Park is located in Son Duong district, Tuyen Quang province, Dai Tu district, Thai Nguyen province, and Lap Thach, Tam Dao and Me Linh districts, Vinh Yen province. The national park lies along a massif, which runs from north-west to south-east, and is isolated from other high-elevation areas by intervening areas of low elevation. There are several peaks over 1,300 m in the national park, the highest of which is Mount Tam Dao Bac at 1,592 m. The lowest point in the national park is c.100 m.

Tam Dao National Park lies within the catchment of two major rivers: the north-east face of the massif lies within the catchment of the Cong river, while the south-west face lies within the catchment of the Day river. Most of the streams and rivers in the national park are steep and fast flowing. Tam Dao experiences a tropical monsoon climate. The mean annual rainfall of around 2,800 mm is concentrated in the rainy season from April to October, when 90% of the total rainfall occurs. During the dry season, rainfall and humidity at higher elevations can be very low, making these areas susceptible to forest fire.

Biodiversity values

Tam Dao supports 21,982 ha of natural forest and 1,351 ha of plantation forest. The natural forest is of two main types: lowland evergreen forest and lower montane evergreen forest. Lowland evergreen forest is distributed at elevations between 700 and 800 m, and is heavily degraded. The diversity of tree species in this forest type is high, with the Fabaceae, Dipterocarpaceae, Meliaceae, Burseraceae, Myrtaceae and Anacardiaceae families being well represented. Lower montane evergreen forest is distributed above 800 m. Members of the Dipterocarpaceae family are almost entirely absent from this forest type, which is dominated by species in the Fagaceae, Lauraceae, Magnoliaceae, Aceraceae, Theaceae, Hamamelidaceae, Sapotaceae and Ericaceae families. Also in this forest type, a number of conifer species are present, such as Decussocarpus fleuryi, Amentotaxus argotaenia, Podocarpus imbricatus and Fokienia hodginsii. In addition to the two main forest types, Tam Dao National Park supports 669 ha of elfin forest, dominated by species in the Ericaceae and Theaceae families.

Tam Dao National Park has been the focus of some of the highest levels of herpetological survey effort in Vietnam, and a large number of reptile and amphibian species have been recorded there. A number of the amphibian species recorded at Tam Dao were assessed as globally threatened during the Global Amphibian Assessment, including Theloderma corticale, T. gordoni and Vietnamese Salamander Paramesotriton deloustali.

Tam Dao National Park also supports some of the highest levels of recorded insect diversity in Vietnam.

Tam Dao National Park qualifies as an Important Bird Area because of its importance for the conservation of biome-restricted bird species. In particular, the site supports a number of biome-restricted species that are known from few other sites in Vietnam, such as Blue-naped Pitta Pitta nipalensis, Purple Cochoa Cochoa purpurea, Chestnut-headed Tesia Tesia castaneocoronata, Pale-footed Bush Warbler Cettia pallidipes and Greater Rufous-headed Parrotbill Paradoxornis ruficeps.

How safe is Vietnam?

iVietnam is a relatively safe country to visit but there are increasing instances of theft, especially in HCMC where pickpockets and snatch thieves on motorbikes are the worst menace. The best tip is to be vigilant at all times. Often cute kids or old grannies have deft fingers. Leave all valuables (expensive watches, jewellery, glasses, etc.) at home, and don’t even wear flash costume jewellery. Make sure you have a firm grip on cameras and shoulder bags at all times and never leave anything you value lying around unattended. I would also not advise taking cyclos late at night, especially in HCMC. our guides will advise you what is “do and don’t” case by case.

What about medical insurance?

It is advised that travelers should have some form of medical insurance before arriving in Vietnam. Although there are several international medical clinics in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City, generally the country still lacks adequate medical care for serious illnesses and injuries, especially in other areas. Therefore, we advise that travelers have sufficient cover for emergency medical care as a precautionary measure. Should I take my money in cash or travellers’cheques? The official currency of Vietnam is the dong, which can not be purchased outside Vietnam. The main banks in Hanoi and HCMC can handle a fairly broad range of currencies nowadays, but the dollar is still the most widely accepted. I therefore recommend taking a combination of US$ cash and US$ travellers’ cheques, with the bulk in travellers’ cheques for safety. American Express, Visa and Thomas Cook cheques are the most recognised brands.

City Street Guides by f.d. walker: A Street Photography Guide to Moscow, Russia

moscow-guide-cover

*A series of guides on shooting Street Photography in cities around the world. Find the best spots to shoot, things to capture, street walks, street tips, safety concerns, and more for cities around the world. I have personally researched, explored and shot Street Photography in every city that I create a guide for. So you can be ready to capture the streets as soon as you step outside with your camera!

At over 12 million people, Moscow is the largest city in Russia and second largest in Europe by population ( Istanbul is #1). An urban, cosmopolitan metropolis with more than enough glitz and glam to cater to the elite, but without losing its fair share of Soviet era roughness around the edges. It can be fast paced, brash, busy, and trendy like other big cities, but it has its blend of West meets Russia atmosphere and beauty that provides plenty of unique interest. The Red Square is as famous as it gets, but there’s so much more to this city, including the most beautiful subway system you’ve ever seen. It would take years to capture all of Moscow, but that means you have an endless amount of areas to discover.

tam dao travel size

So here’s a Street Photography guide so you can be ready to capture all that Moscow has to offer before you even arrive!

  • Patriarch’s Pond
  • Old Arbat Street
  • Maroseyka Street
  • Tverskoy Boulevard

Top 5 Street Spots:

1. red square.

The Red Square is the most famous square in not just Russia, but all of Eastern Europe. The name actually doesn’t come from the color of the bricks or communism, but from the name in Russian, Krásnaya, once meaning “beautiful” before its meaning changed to “red.” This large plaza is what you see on the cover of guide books and magazines for Moscow, with St. Basil’s Cathedral being the center piece next to Lenin’s Mausoleum surrounded by the Kremlin Wall. Of course, the Red Square attracts hordes of tourist due to the main attractions, but all that activity around an interesting atmosphere does provide street photo opportunities. It’s also the central square connecting to the city’s major streets, providing a good starting point to explore outward.

tam dao travel size

You’ll also find the popular pedestrian only Nikolskaya Street connecting the Red Square to Lubyanka Square. This line of expensive shops includes plenty of activity, while also leading you to another popular square. Filled with history rivaling any city, the Red Square and surrounding areas are the heart and soul of Russia.

tam dao travel size

2. Patriarch’s Ponds

Patriarch’s Ponds is one of the most exclusive neighborhoods in Moscow. Despite the name being plural, there’s only one large pond, but it’s worth a visit with your camera. It’s a popular spot for locals and expats to come relax or take a stroll around the pond. You get an interesting mix of young and old too, from young love to “babushkas” feeding pigeons. It’s a very peaceful park atmosphere in one of the nicer areas within the city center, while bringing enough activity for street photography.

tam dao travel size

The pond is shallow and in the winter becomes a popular spot for ice-skating too. The area is also well-known for the location in the famous Russian novel, The Master and Margarita.

3. Old Arbat (Stary Arbat)

Old Arbat is the most famous pedestrian street in Moscow, and dating back to the 15th century, also one of its oldest. Originally, it was an area of trade, but soon became the most prestigious residential area in Moscow. During the 18th century, Arbat started attracting the city’s scholars and artists, including Alexander Pushkin. Cafes lined the streets and impressive homes filled the neighborhood. Since then, New Arbat street was created as a highway in the area, while Old Arbat was paved for a 1km pedestrian only walkway.

tam dao travel size

Due to the historic buildings, famous artists that lived here, and the bohemian atmosphere, Old Arbat has become a big attraction for tourists today. Now, there’s a mix of cafes, restaurants, souvenir shops, street performers, street merchants and other attractions for visitors, and some locals, to come enjoy. It can get really busy here and there’s usually something interesting going on so it’s a good street to come walk with your camera for guaranteed life.

4. Gorky Park

One of the most famous places in Moscow is Gorky Park. The official name is Maxim Gorky’s Central Park of Culture & Leisure, which gives you an idea of what goes on here. When built, it was the first of its kind in the Soviet Union. Divided into two parts, it stretches along Moscow River. One end contains fair rides, foods stands, tennis courts, a sports club, a lake for boat rides, and more. This end brings more active life due to its number of attractions, while the other end is more relaxed, where you’ll find gardens, trees, older buildings, and an outdoor amphitheater.

tam dao travel size

Gorky Park attracts mostly locals so it’s a good spot to capture the non-tourist side of Moscow life. Muscovites come here to escape the city and unwind in a picturesque setting. The park remains alive outside of the warmer months too, especially when the lake turns into the city’s largest outdoor skating rink. I’d recommend taking the metro out here to spend at least half a day exploring the massive park’s life with your camera.

5. Maroseyka Street

Maroseyka Street is a popular area not too far from the Red Square. The long, winding street turns into Pokrovka and is lined with restaurants, cafes, bars and places to stay. It’s actually where I like to stay when I’m in Moscow due to its location and solid street photography opportunities itself. You have Kitay-gorod station near and if you keep walking southwest, you’ll get to the Red Square. But if you walk northwest, as it changes to Pokrovka, you can find a long street of activity for photography with its own interesting atmosphere.

6. Tverskoy Boulevard

Tverskoy Boulevard is the oldest and longest boulevard in Moscow, beginning at the end of Nikitsky Boulevard, and finishing at Pushkin Square, a spot to come for activity itself. The boulevard is made up of two avenues, with pedestrian walkways in-between. You’ll find grass, shrubbery, trees, benches and more walking it’s almost kilometer length. Many people come here to enjoy some relaxation, walk their dog, or just to use it to walk wherever they’re going. Its center location also provides a nice place to walk with your camera near plenty of other spots you’ll want to check out anyway.

Sample Street Walk:

For a full day of Street Photography, covering some of the best spots, you can follow this sample street walk for Moscow:

  • Start your morning walking around the Red Square (1), while exploring the surrounding area, including Nikolskaya Street
  • Then walk northwest to Patriarch’s Ponds (2) and slowly walk the pond and surrounding area with your camera
  • Next, walk east to the Pushkin Monument and stroll down Tverskoy Boulevard (6)
  • Once Tverskoy Boulevard (6) ends, it will turn into Nikitsky Boulevard. Follow this down until you get to the start of Old Arbat Street (3), across from Arbatskaya station
  • After you’re done walking down Old Arbat Street (3) for more street photography, spend some time checking out Moscow’s beautiful metro stations
  • To finish off the day with more street photography, get off the metro near Red Square (1) again, Maroseyka Street (5) or wherever you’re staying for the night.

3 Things I’ll Remember about Shooting in Moscow:

1. museum metro.

The Moscow metro system was the first underground railway system in the Soviet Union and today includes 203 stations across 340km of routes. The elaborate system has some of the deepest stations in the world too, with escalators that seem to go on forever. None of this is what makes it so special, though. Many of its stations feel like stepping inside a museum, making it without a doubt the most interesting and beautiful metro system I’ve been in.

tam dao travel size

When built, Stalin wanted to make the metro stations “palaces for the people” with marble, chandeliers, and grand architecture. The best part is the variety of architecture and styles used, making many of the stations a completely different experience visually. You could easily spend a whole day traveling the stations and there are even tours available for people who wish to do just that. My advice, though, would be just to buy a ticket and hop on and off at different stations, while exploring different lines. The museum-like surrounding mixed with the crowds of characters can make for a great photography experience.

tam dao travel size

Since there are so many stations, here are some of my favorites to check out:

  • Novoslobodskaya
  • Mayakovskaya
  • Elektrozavodskaya
  • Komsomolskaya
  • Ploschad Revolyutsii
  • Dostoyevskaya
  • Prospekt Mira

2. Moscow is Big

It’s no secret that Moscow is a big city, but it can feel even bigger with how spread out much of it is. This is especially true if you compare it to cities outside of Asia. If I compared it to cities in Europe, I’d probably say only Istanbul would warrant more time to really discover the depths of this city. Most only explore around the Red Square and surrounding area, but that is such a small part of the city. Although, that central area does give you plenty to see on its own.

tam dao travel size

Fortunately, I had a good friend living in the city to show me around, but it opened up my eyes even more to how much there is to discover in Moscow. It’s a big city with a variety of atmosphere that can take you from “east” to “west” and trendy to rugged depending on where you go. I’d imagine you’d have to live here a while to really know the city.

3. Cosmopolitan Mix of East meets West

Modern skyscrapers mixed with amazing architecture, a world-class metro system with museum-like beauty, trendy fashion and chic clubs, Moscow is a rich mix of Russian culture and history in a more western cosmopolitan package. There is a push to keep the Russian culture, while also pushing forward with a modern metropolis the whole world will envy. This comes with an impressive skyline, that continues to grow, and endless modernities, but with soviet nostalgia and atmosphere mixed in for good measure.

tam dao travel size

Mixed in with this grand western cosmopolitan atmosphere, is a strong national pride in Russia. This includes their famous leader, Vladimir Putin. Maybe no other place will you see a country’s leader more often. All over, from the pricey tourist shops to the underground walkway stalls, you’ll find goods with Putin’s likeness covering them. From t-shirts to magnets to Matryoshka dolls. There’s a strong national pride that can be seen around the city, which also extends to their leader. Moscow is many things. It’s East meets West, modernizations meets Soviet era, and a whole lot more.

What To Do For a Street Photography Break?:

Eat at a stolovaya.

Stolovayas are Russian cafeterias that became popular in the Soviet days. You grab a tray and walk down the line of freshly prepared local dishes, and select whatever you want from the chefs. They’re usually inexpensive and a much better value than restaurants, while giving you the opportunity to try from a wide selection of everyday Russian food. They’re also very tasty. I always include some borsch on my tray and go from there. The places themselves are all over Moscow and usually come with Soviet-era aesthetics to complete the experience.

Street Safety Score: 7

*As always, no place is completely safe! So when I talk about safety, I’m speaking in general comparison to other places. Always take precaution, be smart, observe your surroundings and trust your instincts anywhere you go!

Being the 2nd largest city in Europe with over 12 million people, you’re going to have your dangerous areas, but for the most part, it feels safe walking around. Russia is statistically higher in crime compared to most of Europe, but this generally doesn’t apply to tourists and visitors. Around the Red Square and surrounding city center, you should feel completely safe walking around. Pick pocketing can happen, but no more than other touristic places. I always explore Moscow freely without coming across too much to worry about. It’s a spread out city, though, so of course it matters where you are. Just use basic street smarts, know where you are and Moscow shouldn’t give you a problem.

tam dao travel size

People’s Reaction Score: 7

Moscow is fast paced, big city life, which usually means people aren’t too concerned with you, or your camera. I don’t find people notice or pay much attention to me when I’m out taking photos in Moscow. For the most part, people just go about their day. You shouldn’t get too many looks or concern. But it can depend on the area you are in. The more you stick out, the more you might get noticed with suspicions. I’ve never had any problems in Moscow, or Russia, but just be careful who you’re taking a photo of if you get out of the city center. Other than that, it’s about average for reactions.

Street Tips:

Learn the alphabet .

Much of Moscow, including the metro system, doesn’t use english. The Russian alphabet uses letters from the Cyrillic script, which if you aren’t familiar with it and don’t know the sounds, can be hard to decipher the words. This is most important for street names and metro stops when trying to get around. It can save confusion and make it easier getting around if you learn the basic alphabet. At the very least then, you can sound out the words to see which are similar in the english conversion, which can help matching them to maps. When out shooting street photography, getting around is as important as anything. So save yourself some time and frustration by learning the Russian Alphabet.

tam dao travel size

Use the metro

While Saint-Petersburg feels very walkable for a city its size, Moscow can feel very spread out, even for its bigger size. Outside of the Red Square area, you can have plenty of walking before getting anywhere very interesting, so you’ll need to take the metro a lot if you really want to explore the city. Maps are deceiving here too, it will always be further than it looks.

tam dao travel size

Another reason it’s less walkable than Saint-Petersburg is its completely different set-up. Moscow’s streets are mostly contstructed in rings with narrow, winding streets in-between. This is common with medieval city cities that used to be confined by walls, but you usually don’t have it in a city this massive. Saint-Petersburg has a more grid-like pattern that also uses the canals to help you know your way around. When it comes to navigating on foot in Moscow, it can be more difficult, so bring a map and take the metro when needed. It’s why Moscow’s metro carries more passengers per day than the London and Paris subways combined.

Explore other areas if you have time

Moscow is really big. While most people stay around the Red Square within the Boulevard Ring, there’s so much more to the city. I covered some other spots outside of this circle, but if you really want to see the city, you’ll need time. If you do have time, some other areas I’d check out first are Zamoskvarechye, along some of the south and western Moscow.

Inspiration:

For some more inspiration, you can look through the Street Photography of Moscow photographer Artem Zhitenev  and check out 33 of my photos taken in Moscow .

Conclusion:

Moscow’s name brings a certain mystique, but once you’re there it might bring a different atmosphere than you expect. It’s big and sprawling, but beautiful in many ways. It can feel like a European capital on a grand scale, but you can definitely find its Russian side in there.

tam dao travel size

The urban sprawl of Moscow can be intimidating, but give it enough time and you’ll be rewarded with plenty to discover. All with the world’s best metro system to take you around.

I hope this guide can help you start to experience some of what Moscow contains. So grab your camera and capture all that Moscow has to offer for Street Photography!

Independent Travel to Moscow and St. Petersburg

My wife and I have traveled independently to many European countries and, after reading many of the comments in this forum, feel like we may be able to do so in Moscow and St. Petersburg as well, although we feel somewhat less comfortable than the other countries where we have traveled in Europe.

My biggest question is how much we will miss by visiting the main sites without a tour guide. In the other European countries we have visited on our own we have been comfortable and satisfied with the level of knowledge we have gained by studying and visiting on our own, although we believe a tour guide or tour company in any country would normally be able to provide greater insight than visiting a site on our own, but about in Moscow and St. Petersburg?

Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Unless you speak at least some Russian and read the alphabet it would be difficult without a guide. Very few signs in English especially in Moscow. Also not too many people speak English there.

I visited St Petersburg last Autumn for a protracted period , and did not find it anymore daunting than any other European city . As Ilja says , learning the Cyrillic alphabet is a big plus . I also found that it was fairly easy to grasp . It will , among other things , enable you to read signs with relative ease . I would answer the main part or your question ( about tour guides ) thus - I am not enamored of tour guides or tours. While I only use a tour under duress ( A sites rules prohibiting an independent visit - ie Glasgow School of Art , Municipal House in Prague , etc ) . Doing your own preparation and homework is the best way , in my opinion . My wife and I ventured through St Petersburg with nary a concern ,and made two day trips outside of the central district ( one was twenty five miles away , and no English speakers in sight ) Figuring out the logistical details , did not present any difficulties . While I never use tours , I am an inveterate eavesdropper , have done so many times , and find , that on balance , the information that they impart is fairly elementary . If you want greater detail , they are unlikely to supply it . I also prefer to go at my own pace , not being rushed and being able to dwell on things that most other visitors barely give a passing glance . If you are interested , let me know . I would be happy to provide you with information that will enable you to travel independently

Thank you, Steven. I am encouraged by your comments and feel the same way you do about tour groups. We are very much willing to prepare in advance and learn the basics of the Cyrillic alphabet to help us have a better experience.

I would be very interested in learning more about your experience in Russia and receiving any additional information you can provide on independent travel there, starting perhaps with obtaining the visa.

I am not opposed to hiring a private or small group guide for a specific site or for a day trip outside St Petersburg and Moscow, but, like you said, I much prefer the freedom of staying at places as long or short as I want and seeing the sites that interest me most. For example, neither my wife nor I are big into shopping, yet most tour itineraries leave afternoon time for just that. Not interested!

Please provide whatever you may feel would be helpful for us.

Russ , I see you are quite near San Francisco - you can start by looking at the VISA procedure , it's fairly straightforward . Since there is a consulate in San Francisco - look here http://www.consulrussia.org/eng/visa-sub1.html

And here - http://ils-usa.com/main.php

Having always traveled independently, we thought we could do a better job than any tour. How misguided (pun intended) we were. Now that we have had the experience of having someone native to the area walk us around and explain things through a personal perspective we realize how much we missed. For St. Petersburg I highly recommend http://www.peterswalk.com/tours.html . This is not a traditional guided tour, but an opportunity to receive some orientation to the area as well as insight into the "Russian soul". I think if you did this upon arrival the rest of your time would be much more meaningful. We really liked the http://www.pushka-inn.com . The location is superb (just around the corner from the Hermitage square), the rooms lovely, the included breakfast at the restaurant next door ample and overall an excellent value. We used this company to get our visa: https://www.passportvisasexpress.com/site/san_francisco_customer_service Note that it costs about the same for a 3-year visa as a one-year, and you never know if you might want to return within that more extended window of time. It is not cheap, so factor that into your planning.

If you like traveling without a guide in other countries and find this satisfying, the same will be true in Moscow and St. Petersburg. Of course it's not either/or - you can certainly take a guided walk or boat tour, for instance.

I cannot emphasize enough the importance of learning Cyrillic if you're going on your own. The book I used was Teach Yourself Beginner's Russian Script, which was great. It breaks down the alphabet into letters that are the same as English, letters that look the same but are pronounced differently, etc. It's out of print, but you can get used copies on Amazon: http://www.amazon.com/Teach-Yourself-Beginners-Russian-Script/dp/0071419861/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1459701143&sr=8-2&keywords=teach+yourself+russian+script

Russia is indeed a bit more "foreign" than say, Italy. However, in Moscow and St. Petersburg, I found enough English to be able to get by. Many restaurants had English menus and/or English speaking staff, for instance. This was most emphatically not true in Vladimir and Suzdal (two cities in the Golden Ring outside Moscow). I went with my sister, a Russian speaker, and if she hadn't been there, I would have been in big trouble. So, if you want to see places outside these two big cities, use a guided tour (even if just for that part). Also, Moscow and St. Petersburg are huge cities. Coming from New York, I wasn't intimidated, but those not used to a megacity may not be so cavalier (even I found them overwhelming at times, especially Moscow).

I found both Lonely Planet and Rough Guide to be helpful, and both to have various errors. Look at both, buy whichever one has a more recent edition, and then be prepared to have to discard some of the advice therein. Also, these places change more quickly than places in Western Europe. Be very careful of outdated advice. For instance, I was there in 2001 and 2010, so I won't give you any specifics on getting a visa - that changes constantly.

Just as a teaser, two things I saw and loved that I doubt would be included in any escorted tour are the Gorky House in Moscow (an Art Nouveau wonder) and the Sheremyetov Palace in St. Petersburg (it's now a museum of musical instruments, and the decor is amazing, particularly in the Etruscan Room).

Thanks for all the good advice. Any additional thoughts are welcomed.

One of history's seminal works pertaining to Russian history and culture and a MUST for anyone contemplating a visit or simply interested , is this fine work from 1980 - http://www.amazon.com/Land-Firebird-The-Beauty-Russia/dp/096441841X

This is about you and not about Petersburg. Do you like guided tours? We don't and didn't find that a guide added to our experience in China where we did hire private guides mostly for the logistics; it was easy to have someone drive us places. But once at a site, we didn't need the guide. I felt the same way about our 9 nights in Petersburg. We did hire a guide for the trip to the Catherine Palace again for the ease of logistics for us Olds. Here is our visit: https://janettravels.wordpress.com/2016/01/23/an-easy-trip-to-the-catherine-palace/ There are also snapshots of the Church on Spilled Blood in this photo journal. Having someone pick us up at the apartment and get us in without line ups and shepherd us through the palace steering clear of the tour groups was lovely. But we didn't need commentary because we can read and prepare.

You certainly don't need a guide for the Hermitage (we spent 4 days there), the Russian Museum, the Kazan Cathedral or Church on Spilled Blood or the Faberge Museum. We enjoyed a number of self guided walking tours including a couple from Rick Steves guidebooks. We took the canal cruise suggested by RS that had an English commentator. I would not take one without that as you will be totally clueless. The commentator was not all that good but at least we had some idea what we were seeing. So for people like us who like to do our own thing and can read a guidebook and don't particularly like to be led about, a tour is not needed. If you enjoy tour groups, then go for it. Petersburg is easy to negotiate. It helps if you can read the cyrillic alphabet and it is also useful to have the google translate ap on your phone. We found ourselves translating packages in grocery stores with it and the occasional museum sign or menu. I have one food I need to avoid and so it was handy to have the translator to talk with waiters (I could either show them the sentence, or play it for them or play it to myself and then repeat it to the waiter -- that all worked well)

Dear Russ, I cannot help you with Moscow, but about four years ago, my husband and I went to St Petersburg on our own. But, we did use a private guide for 4 half days. We both feel that our guide absolutely made our trip (we stayed 6 or 7 nights). We used a company owned by Tatyana Chiurikova, www.tour-stpetersburg.com I cannot say enough good things about her and our experience. I emailed her and we worked out a schedule/ sights that was tailored to our interests. She also offered some recommendations, which we took. The guide will meet you at your hotel. And frequently, at certain places, with the guide, we were able to skip the long entrance lines. We had an half day driving tour of the city (car, driver, & guide). You are taken to & go in places such as Peter & Paul Fortress, some of the cathedrals, etc. We had a half day with the guide at the Hermitage which ensured that we would see the major sights there. And, of course, you can stay after your guide leaves or return another day. Also, we had the guide for Peterhof (a must & go by boat) and Catherine's Palace. I hope that you will go to the website. As I said, our guide made our trip. I am positive that we would have missed quite a bit on our own everyday. And I'm sure we would have wasted a lot of time trying to get to various place. This was the best of both worlds, a guide where needed and plenty of time on our own. Whatever you do, I'm sure that you will love St Petersburg! Ashley

I am curious about the lines as we encountered no lines on our trip -- but it was in September. We got tickets for the Hermitage at machines and skipped those lines and our guide for the Catherine Palace which was our only guided experience (as noted before, chosen for the logistics of getting there) had arranged tickets and we didn't have a line, but then we also didn't see lines. We did not find lines at any other site.

Both Moscow and St Petersburg I've done on my own, that is together with the Dear Partner. I can't remember any problem getting where we wanted to go. The Metro systems are well signed, and with a little exercise and patience you can recognize the station names. With a good map and a good guide - we had the Rough Guides - that part of the logistics is solved. The language is a major problem, but the usual tricks of pointing, looking helpless, and making a joke of it all do wonders. I would hate to be led by a guide, but for others it is a comfortable thought.

We also did both cities on our own. I found the DK Eyewitness guide for Moscow has the best map. I used the one from our library (kept the book at home). Took the smaller RS book for St. Petersburg ( his book on northern cities). His map and restaurant ideas were all good. We also downloaded the Google maps in our Android Samsung tablets/phones for both cities and then could get directions to any place we typed in. The blue ball guided us everywhere. I'm sure we missed somethings by not having a guide, but we just enjoy walking around and getting a sense of a place. If you like art, The Hermitage is great. We went 3 times and still missed alot. In St. Peterburg we stayed at the 3 Mosta which we loved (quite and not far from the Church of Spilled Blood.) We also loved the Georgian food in both cities. There's a great Georgian restaurant near the 3 Mosta hotel. We're now in Belarus- very scenic. Enjoy your trip!!
