Crime, civil unrest and terrorism are common risk factors for countries that end up on the State Department's "Do Not Travel" advisory list.

In 2024, tourism across the globe is “well on track” to return to pre-pandemic levels, according to projections by UN Tourism.

Global conflicts and natural disasters , ranging from a series of coups across Africa to catastrophic earthquakes in the Middle East affected international travel patterns throughout 2023. Still, international tourist arrivals reached 87% of pre-pandemic levels in 2023, according to estimates by UN Tourism .

In January 2024 alone, about 4.6 million U.S. citizens left the country for international destinations, 17% higher than the same month in 2019, according to the International Trade Administration . But some destinations warrant more caution than others.

On Oct. 19, 2023, following the outbreak of war between Israel and Gaza and flaring tensions in the region, the U.S. State Department issued a worldwide caution advisory due to “increased tensions in various locations around the world, the potential for terrorist attacks, demonstrations or violent actions against U.S. citizens and interests.” Prior to this update, the most recent worldwide caution advisory was issued in 2022 after a U.S. strike killed Ayman al-Zawahiri, Osama bin Laden’s successor as leader of Al Qaeda, causing “a higher potential for anti-American violence.” The worldwide caution advisory remains in effect.

The U.S. State Department also issues individual travel advisory levels for more than 200 countries globally, continually updating them based on a variety of risk indicators such as health, terrorism and civil unrest. Travel advisory levels range from Level 1, which means exercise normal precautions, to Level 4, which means do not travel there.

About 10% of countries – 19 total – have a Level 4: “Do Not Travel” advisory as of Mar. 4. In Level 4 countries, the U.S. government may have “very limited ability” to step in should travelers’ safety or security be at risk, according to the State Department. Crime, civil unrest, kidnapping and terrorism are common risk factors associated with Level 4 countries.

So far in 2024, the State Department made changes to the existing Level 4 advisories for Myanmar, Iran and Gaza, and moved Niger and Lebanon off of the Level 4 list.

Places With a Level 4 Travel Advisory

These are the primary areas the U.S. government says not to travel to right now, in alphabetical order:

Jump to Place: Afghanistan Belarus Burkina Faso Central African Republic Myanmar (formerly Burma) Gaza Haiti Iran Iraq Libya Mali Mexico North Korea (Democratic People's Republic of Korea) Russia Somalia South Sudan Sudan Syria Ukraine Venezuela Yemen

Afghanistan: The Central Asian country is wrestling with “terrorism, risk of wrongful detention, kidnapping and crime,” according to the State Department. U.S. citizens are specifically at risk for wrongful detention and kidnapping. In 2022, the government reinstituted public floggings and executions, and women’s rights are disappearing under Taliban control. The U.S. Embassy in Kabul halted operations in August 2021. Since the Taliban took control , many forms of international aid have been halted . Meanwhile, in 2023, some of the year’s deadliest earthquakes killed more than 2,400 in Afghanistan while the country continues to face a years-long extreme drought.

Belarus: Belarus, which shares a western border with Russia and a southern border with Ukraine, has been flagged for “Belarusian authorities’ continued facilitation of Russia’s war against Ukraine, the buildup of Russian military forces in Belarus, the arbitrary enforcement of local laws, the potential of civil unrest, the risk of detention, and the Embassy’s limited ability to assist U.S. citizens residing in or traveling to Belarus.” The U.S. Embassy in Minsk halted operations in February 2022.

Burkina Faso: Terrorism, crime and kidnapping are plaguing this West African nation. Terrorist attacks may target hotels, restaurants and schools with little to no warning, and the East and Sahel regions of the country are under a state of emergency. In late November 2023, hundreds died in clashes between state security forces and rebels near the country’s border with Mali. In June, more than 2 million people in Burkina Faso were displaced due to “violence linked to al-Qaida and the Islamic State group.”

Central African Republic: While there have not been specific incidents of U.S. citizens targeted with violence or crime, violent crime and sudden closure of roads and borders is common. The advisory states that “Embassy Bangui’s limited capacity to provide support to U.S. citizens, crime, civil unrest, and kidnapping” is a factor in its assessment. Recent data from UNICEF suggests the country has the worst drinking water accessibility of all countries in 2022.

Myanmar (Formerly Burma): Armed conflict and civil unrest are the primary reasons to not travel to this Southeast Asian country, which experienced a military coup in early 2021. Limited health care resources, wrongful detentions and “areas with land mines and unexploded ordnance” are also listed as risk factors. After Ukraine and Israel, Myanmar had the highest conflict-related death toll in 2023.

Gaza : Hamas, a foreign terrorist organization as designated by the State Department, controls much of the Gaza Strip, which shares borders with both Israel and Egypt. On Oct. 7, 2023, Hamas fighters broke across the border into Israel, killing hundreds of civilians and soldiers in a brazen attack that stunned Israelis. On Oct. 10, Israel hit the Gaza Strip with “the fiercest air strikes in its 75-year conflict” according to Reuters . The conflict has since escalated into war between Israel and Hamas, with regular Israeli airstrikes leading to extensive civilian casualties in Gaza. As of mid-December, nearly 85% of Gaza’s population were displaced from their homes, according to UN estimates . The region continues to face shortages of food , water, electricity and medical supplies , with conditions deemed “far beyond a humanitarian crisis.” The State Department warns of terrorism and armed conflict within Gaza’s borders.

Haiti: In July 2023, the Department of State ordered all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members to leave the U.S. Embassy in Port-au-Prince in response to the increased risk of kidnapping and violent crime in the country , as well as armed conflict between gangs and police. The travel advisory states that cases of kidnapping “often involve ransom negotiations and U.S. citizen victims have been physically harmed during kidnappings.” The travel advisory also states that “U.S. citizens in Haiti should depart Haiti as soon as possible” given “the current security situation and infrastructure challenges.” A series of gang attacks in late September 2023 caused thousands to flee their homes, and many aid groups have been forced to cut or suspend operations amid escalating violence in recent months.

Iran: Terrorism, kidnapping and civil unrest are risk factors for all travelers to Iran, while U.S. citizens are specifically at risk for “arbitrary arrest.” U.S.-Iranian nationals such as students, journalists and business travelers have been arrested on charges of espionage and threatening national security. Executions in Iran rose sharply between 2021 and 2022, bringing the country’s total to nearly 580 people over the year, according to a report by Amnesty International released in May 2023.

Iraq: The State Department cites “terrorism, kidnapping, armed conflict [and] civil unrest” as cause for the country’s Level 4 distinction. Iraq’s northern borders, and its border with Syria, are especially dangerous. Since the escalation of conflict in neighboring Israel in October, there has been an increase in attacks against Iraqi military bases, which host U.S. troops and other international forces. In October 2023, non-emergency U.S. government personnel and eligible family members were ordered to leave the U.S. embassy in Baghdad.

Libya: Following the end of its dictatorship over a decade ago, Libya has been wrought with internal conflict between armed groups in the East and West. Armed conflict, civil unrest, crime, kidnapping and terrorism are all risk factors. U.S. citizens have been targets of kidnapping for ransom, with terrorists targeting hotels and airports frequented by Westerners. The U.S. Embassy in Tripoli halted operations in 2014. In mid-September 2023, floods, which some say were intensified by climate change , killed thousands in eastern Libya. Clashes between armed factions escalated across the country in the latter half of 2023, including in the capital city of Tripoli and in Benghazi.

Mali: After experiencing military coups in 2020 and 2021, crime, terrorism and kidnapping are all prevalent threats in this West African landlocked nation. In July 2022, non-emergency U.S. government employees and their families were ordered to leave the country due to higher risk of terrorist activity. A U.N. report in August 2023 said that military groups in the country, including both Mali security forces and possibly Russian Wagner mercenaries, were spreading terror through the use of violence against women and human rights abuses. Democratic elections were supposed to occur in February 2024, but Mali’s military junta postponed the plans indefinitely. In December, the U.N. officially ended a decade-long peacekeeping presence in the country, which had been among the agency’s deadliest missions, with hundreds of the mission personnel killed since 2013.

Mexico: Each state in Mexico is assessed separately for travel advisory levels. Six of the 32 states in Mexico are designated as Level 4: Colima, Guerrero, Michoacan, Sinaloa, Tamaulipas and Zacatecas. Crime and kidnapping are listed as the primary risk factors throughout the country. Nearly 112,000 people were missing across the country as of October, a number the U.N. has called “alarming.”

North Korea (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea): U.S. passports are not valid for travel “to, in, or through” this country, home to one of the world's longest-running dynastic dictatorships. The travel advisory states that the Level 4 distinction is due to “the continuing serious risk of arrest and long-term detention of U.S. nationals.” In July 2023, a U.S. soldier fled across the border into North Korea, where he is believed to be in North Korean custody, the first American detained in the North in nearly five years. He was returned to U.S. custody in September 2023.

Russia: The travel advisory for Russia cites its invasion of Ukraine , harassment of U.S. citizens by Russian government officials and arbitrary law enforcement as a few of the reasons for the Level 4 designation. Chechnya and Mount Elbrus are specifically listed as Level 4 regions. Terrorism, civil unrest, health, kidnapping and wrongful detention are all noted as risks.

Russia Invades Ukraine: A Timeline

Somalia: A severe drought resulting from five failed rainy seasons in a row killed 43,000 people in 2022, and caused a famine amid conflict with Islamist insurgents . Violent crime is common throughout Somalia , pirates frequent its coast off the Horn of Africa, and medical facilities, where they exist, have limited capacity. Crime, terrorism, civil unrest, health and kidnapping are all risk factors. In January 2024, some passengers aboard a U.N.-contracted helicopter were taken hostage by al-Shabaab militants after the vehicle crashed in central Somalia.

South Sudan: Crime, kidnapping and armed conflict are the primary risk factors for South Sudan, which separated from Sudan in 2011, making it the world’s newest country . Weapons are readily available, and travelers have been victims of sexual assault and armed robbery.

Sudan: The U.S. evacuated its embassy in Khartoum in April 2023, and the country closed its airspace due to the ongoing conflict in the country, only permitting humanitarian aid and evacuation efforts. Fighting has escalated in the region between two warring generals seeking to gain control after a military coup in 2021 ousted the country’s prime minister. Civil unrest is the primary risk factor for Africa’s third largest country by area. Crime, terrorism, kidnapping and armed conflict are also noted. The International Criminal Court began investigating alleged war crimes and violence against African ethnic groups in the country in 2023. Millions have fled their homes due to conflict, and the U.N. has said its efforts to provide aid have been hindered by a lack of support, safety and resources. As recently as December 2023, the United Nations warned of catastrophic famine , with millions of children at-risk for malnutrition .

Syria: The advisory states that “No part of Syria is safe from violence,” with terrorism, civil unrest, kidnapping, armed conflict and risk of unjust detention all potential risk factors. U.S. citizens are often a target for kidnappings and detention. The U.S. Embassy in Damascus halted operations in 2012. Fighting in neighboring Israel has escalated since October, and the conflict has spilled over into Syria, where the U.S. has carried out air strikes following drone and rocket attacks against American troops in Syria and Iraq, triggered by the Israel-Hamas war.

Ukraine: Russian setbacks in their invasion of Ukraine buoyed hopes in Ukraine in 2023. However, Ukraine is a Level 4 country due to Russia’s invasion, with crime and civil unrest also noted as risk factors. The country’s forces shot down two Russian fighter jets on Christmas Eve 2023, in a move Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said “sets the right mood for the entire year ahead.”

Venezuela: Human rights abuses and lack of health care plague this South American nation, which has been in a political crisis since 2014. In 2019, diplomatic personnel were withdrawn from the U.S. Embassy in Caracas. Threats in the country include crime, civil unrest, kidnapping, wrongful detention and poor health infrastructure.

Yemen: Six of the nine risk factors defined by the State Department – terrorism, civil unrest, health risks, kidnapping, armed conflict and landmines – are all present in Yemen. Despite private companies offering tourist visits to the Yemeni island of Socotra, the U.S. government argues those arranging such visits “are putting tourists in danger.” Civil war and cholera are also both present throughout the country. The U.S. Embassy in Sanaa halted operations in 2015. The country has experienced a relative lull in the civil war fighting, but as peace negotiations have gotten traction, flare ups in the fighting have jeopardized progress. Most recently, the U.S. and U.K. have carried out a series of airstrikes in the country, targeting Iran-backed Houthi sites.

Other Countries to Watch

Since Jan. 1, the State Department has updated travel advisories for 17 different countries as well as for the West Bank and Gaza, adding information about specific regions or risk factors, or simply renewing an existing advisory. Travel advisory levels can change based on several factors in a nation, such as increased civil unrest, policies that affect human rights or higher risks of unlawful detention.

The State Department has given about 25 countries an assessment of Level 3, meaning it recommends people “reconsider travel” to those destinations.

On Oct. 14, one week after the deadly Hamas attack on Israel, Israel and the West Bank were both moved from Level 2 to Level 3, while Gaza remains at Level 4. The region’s travel advisory was updated in November to reflect travel restrictions for certain government employees who have not already left the area, and it was updated again on Jan. 3.

Following the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war in early October, the U.S. State Department raised Lebanon ’s travel advisory level from a Level 3 to a Level 4 level due to “the unpredictable security situation related to rocket, missile, and artillery exchanges” between Israel and Hezbollah or other militant groups. In December, the U.S. Embassy in Beirut returned to normal staffing and presence, and on Jan. 29, the country was moved back to Level 3. Crime, terrorism, armed conflict, civil unrest, kidnapping and unexploded landmines are listed as the country’s primary risk factors. However, the country’s borders with Syria and with Israel, as well as refugee settlements within Lebanon, are specifically noted as Level 4 regions.

China became a Level 3 country in late 2020, with an update in December 2022 citing “the surge in COVID-19 cases, arbitrary enforcement of local laws, and COVID-19-related restrictions” as the reason for the advisory. In June 2023, the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (SAR) was moved from the Level 3 to the Level 2 list, but travelers are still advised to be cautious in the area due to “arbitrary enforcement of local laws.” Meanwhile, Macau remains at Level 3.

Following an attempted coup in August 2023, Niger was elevated to Level 4 in August and the Department of State ordered all non-emergency U.S. government personnel and family members to leave the U.S. Embassy in Niamey. In early January 2024, the overall risk level for the country was lowered back to Level 3. Despite the new classification, the State Department still asks non-emergency government personnel and eligible family members to depart the country.

In mid-December 2023 there was an explosion at Guinea’s main fuel depot which has since affected access to health care and basic goods and services. The country was subsequently designated a Level 3 nation after having previously been Level 2. Concerns about civil unrest, health, crime and fuel shortages impacting local infrastructure were listed as the primary risk factors contributing to the change.

Several Level 3 countries are among the worst countries for human trafficking, as designated by the State Department’s annual Trafficking in Persons Report . Level 3 countries on this list include Papua New Guinea, Guinea Bissau, China and Chad. There are also nine Level 4 countries designated as among the worst for human trafficking: Afghanistan, Belarus, Iran, Myanmar, North Korea, Russia, Syria, South Sudan and Venezuela.

Over 70 countries are currently at Level 2, meaning the State Department recommends travelers “exercise increased caution” when traveling to those destinations.

Botswana became the newest Level 2 country on Feb. 26 after having previously been Level 1, with crime noted as the primary risk factor.

France, which saw nationwide protests throughout 2023, has civil unrest and terrorism noted as risk factors for its Level 2 status, and Sweden’s Level 2 status is associated with risks of terrorism.

The Level 2 travel advisory for the Bahamas was updated in January to reflect water safety concerns. The advisory warns that “activities involving commercial recreational watercraft, including water tours, are not consistently regulated” and notes that government personnel are “not permitted to use independently operated jet-ski rentals on New Providence and Paradise Islands.” It also warns visitors to be mindful of sharks, weather and water conditions. The advisory also says that crime is a primary risk factor with gang-on-gang violence contributing to high homicide rates in some areas. Visitors are asked to “be vigilant” and to not physically resist robbery attempts.

Bangladesh 's Level 2 travel advisory was updated in October 2023 to add a note about the country’s general election , which took place Jan. 7, 2024. The advisory states “demonstrations intended to be peaceful can turn confrontational and escalate into violence.” The U.S. has since claimed the country’s election was not free nor fair.

In November 2023, several Level 2 travel advisories were updated with new cautionary information. The advisory for Ghana was updated to reflect threats against LGBTQI+ travelers specifically, noting “anti-LGBTQI+ rhetoric and violence have increased in recent years.” Meanwhile, the advisory for South Africa was updated in February to note that routes recommended by GPS may be unsafe with higher risk for crime.

Turkmenistan was moved off of the Level 2 list to become the newest addition to the Level 1 list on Jan. 22, meaning normal precautions are recommended but there are no risk factors causing travelers to practice increased caution.

The State Department asks travelers to pay attention to travel advisory levels and alerts , review country information pages for their destinations and read related country security reports before going abroad.

Ok, I looked up and found out what they mean- not valid before, and not valid after. But.....

As we're leaving in July, why does it say NVB 11th Jan, and NVA 20 Feb? So, we COULD try to change them to leave on the 11th Jan, 2020, or to fly back on 20th Feb, 2021??

Just hoping to understand it, not panicking about it.

que es not valid for travel

What exactly are you asking about? Is it a visa or a ticket or what?

Central: Please don't sacrifice clarity for brevity...what does Nvb & Nva mean?

que es not valid for travel

#2 - to be fair, Central has explained that bit!

An e-ticket for a flight I took on 29 August has “Not valid before 22/08/19 - Not valid after 29/09/19” on it.

To answer the original question, most tickets are changeable during the validity period but there is likely a fee and fare difference to pay for this which could be quite expensive. You either need to check the fare rules on the e-ticket or contact the airline . If you booked through an agent or other 3rd party you need to speak with them - they may add extra fees on top of what the airline charges.

My own guess - random - was that those were the dates that the fare I'd paid for was valid.

In the deep and distant past when there were few or no computers and everything was ticketed manually and you got those multiple tear off paper tickets, those dates really meant something, if you had a semi flexible ticket - you could change your date of travel back then within the period specified by those dates for no extra cost. Not any more, but then flights are much, much cheaper today.

Ok, not so hard to understand now, thank you all.I hadn't seen it before, and just wondered what it was.

So it was what I thought it must be, I was just very puzzled at the long length of time on either side.

Certainly hoping to not change, but it's nice to know what it's about.

Thanks, Steve. To be fair, Cymra, I re-read the post a couple of times, and no, she doesn't explain those letters.

Ummm yes the very first line of the post.

>> Ok, I looked up and found out what they mean- not valid before, and not valid after. But..... <<

@tallandcool then re-read it again

>>>Ok, I looked up and found out what they mean- not valid before, and not valid after. But.....<<<

No worries- I often ask before reading properly....... my brain sometimes takes over for the worst.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What kinds of immigration documents does USCIS issue? A:  USCIS issues many types of immigration documents , including: Form I-551, Permanent Resident Card (Green Card); Form I-766, Employment Authorization Document; Form I-94, Arrival/Departure Record; and Form I-797, Notice of Action.

Q: What if the information on my new card is incorrect? A: If any information is missing or incorrect, please call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 or check our website for instructions. You can also submit an electronic request to fix any typographical error. For Green Cards, please file Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) , if there’s an error.

Q: Do I need to always carry my document with me? A:  If you are 18 years of age or older, you must always carry your Employment Authorization Document (EAD), Green Card, or other proof of alien registration in the United States with you.

Q: What do I do if my document is lost or stolen or becomes damaged? A: If your document is lost or stolen or becomes damaged, or if your name or other information shown on your card changes, use Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Green Card) , for a new Green Card, or Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization , for a new EAD. Please call the USCIS Contact Center at 800-375-5283 or check our website for instructions.

Q: Why does my EAD say, “SERVES AS I-512 ADVANCE PAROLE?” A:  Most EADs have the statement “NOT VALID FOR REENTRY TO U.S.” at the bottom of the card. However, if you received a card that instead has the statement “SERVES AS I-512 ADVANCE PAROLE,” this is a Combination Employment Authorization and Advance Parole Card (combo card). The combo card serves as both an EAD and an Advance Parole Document. The combo card is only available for certain applicants who have a pending Form I-485, Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status . If you travel outside the United States, you may present the combo card, in addition to other documents, at a port of entry to seek parole upon your return. Additionally, U.S. immigration law requires passengers to present evidence of authorization to apply for admission or to otherwise seek lawful entry into the United States before they may board a vessel or aircraft destined for the United States. Presenting a valid combo card will authorize a transportation carrier to accept you on board for travel to the United States, provided you return to the United States on or before the expiration date on the card. The card is valid for multiple applications for parole into the United States until the expiration date.

CoPR - Not Valid For Travel

How do I validate a Confirmation of Permanent Residence or a permanent resident visa if I live in Canada? If you already live in Canada, you have two options to become a permanent resident: You can make an appointment at one of our offices near where you live in Canada. To do this, contact us by using this Web form. If your permanent resident visa (or one of your family’s) expires in two months or less, please indicate that you need urgent processing. If you are not able to make an appointment as set out above, you may leave Canada and return through an international airport or a Canadian land border. When you arrive, an IRCC officer will interview you, and grant you entry into Canada based on the information in your visa. In either case, you will have to show the officer: your passport, travel or identity document (including your visa sticker, if you have one), and your Confirmation of Permanent Residence, permanent resident visa, Certificat de sélection du Québec (CSQ), letter of introduction or any instructions from the Canadian visa office, and your proof of legal status in Canada, such as a valid work permit, study permit, temporary resident permit, or visitor document, or any immigration document you have (whether valid or not), or proof of implied status (if you applied to extend your stay before it ended). Proof of this status may include: payment receipt, copy of your application to extend your stay, printout of online application, or proof of mailing. Note: You must leave Canada, enter another country and re-enter Canada to become a permanent resident at an international airport or Canadian land border. If you need a visa to enter another country before you re-enter Canada, it is up to you to get the visa. You will do these procedures at the first place you arrive in Canada. If you are travelling by air, make sure you have time before any connecting flight or other travel. Click to expand...

However, I am concerned that the document says, "NOT VALID FOR TRAVEL" Is this the correct process, will we be able to leave Canada to the US and re-enter and that will validate the PR? At that point I assume they issue the proper PR card which will be delivered to our home address in Canada? Then we're done? Also we do not require a visa, so really the only thing we have are our passports. Is that that all that is required, passports + CoPR? Click to expand...

Hey guys. I'm with the same problem. I received a letter scheduling my final interview, when I'll receive the confirmation of permanent residency. The problem is that I am travelling abroad right after that and I heard that I can't leave the country until I receive the PR card, exactly because is written in the letter "not valid for travel". My friend showed his letter and told me that I can't travel. Is that true? I appreciate any help.

I need to go to the states on an emergency! I have my Confirmation of Permanent Residency however my pr card hasn’t come in yet. I’m a uk citizen so I am visa exempt. Will my CoPR, passport, and additional documents be enough to come back into Canada? I leave tonight and will come back on Wednesday! Can some one get back to me asap please

https://ca.megabus.com/help/travelling-on-the-bus My trip involves crossing the Canadian/US border – does it require my passport? Persons travelling across the U.S./Canadian border should research information on documents needed to cross the border from the relevant U.S. and Canadian government agencies; as such requirements are subject to change. A valid passport is required for citizens of any nation, including citizens of the United States and Canada, to cross the border in either direction between the United States and Canada. Passengers are advised to consult with their government if they seek to cross the border without a valid passport. For U.S. Government information, passengers should consult with U.S. Customs and Border Protection at www.cbp.gov . For Canadian Government information, passengers should consult with Citizenship and Immigration Canada at www.cic.gc.ca . A guardian travelling with children must provide proof of custody or notarized parental authorization for travel. An adult accompanying a child who is neither a parent nor guardian of the child should have written permission from a parent or guardian to accompany the child across the border, including the name and contact information of the parent or guardian. What should I know about crossing the border? Let’s give the border guards a break and make their jobs easy. Know that all luggage is subject to inspection when crossing international borders. You will be asked to declare any items subject to duty upon crossing the border. Passengers must claim their luggage at the border crossing point for clearance through customs before being allowed to proceed across the border. No luggage is allowed across the border unless claimed by a passenger. No mention of checking visas or resident documentation.

A Guide to U.S. Nonimmigrant Visas

If you would like to visit the United States and you're not a U.S. citizen or a lawful permanent resident, you will have to get a nonimmigrant visa to make the trip. Nonimmigrant visas are available for different travel reasons, and U.S. embassies and consulates worldwide grant them for a temporary period. This guide explains what U.S. nonimmigrant visas are and who needs to get one. We also describe the different types of U.S. nonimmigrant visas and the application process step by step.

What Are U.S. Nonimmigrant Visas?

Unlike immigrant visas, such as green cards , which are for people who plan to permanently live in the United States, nonimmigrant visas are for those who want to make short visits. Nonimmigrant visas are available for tourism, college, or business purposes. They usually have a set end date.

Who Needs a Nonimmigrant Visa?

If you are not a U.S. citizen or lawful permanent resident and plan to temporarily come to the United States, you need a nonimmigrant visa.

However, for foreign nationals from certain home countries, you won't need one as long as you visit the United States for less than 90 days for tourism, business, or while in transit. This program is called the Visa Waiver Program (VWP), and it applies to people from 40 countries and territories, including most within the European Union. In addition, most Canadians will not need a visa to enter the United States unless they plan to work, study, invest, or immigrate.

The Visa Waiver Program has multiple rules for eligibility. You have to enroll in the Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) program before air travel. You can only stay in the United States for a maximum period of 90 days with no extension. You cannot have a history of having a U.S. visa refused or denied. You will also have to prove you have strong ties to your home country and won’t overstay your visa.

What Are the Nonimmigrant Visa Types?

There are three primary nonimmigrant visa categories. You can visit the United States for temporary tourism or business, study, and work.

Visitor Visas (B Visas)

If you plan to visit the United States for tourism or temporary business, you need a B-1 or B-2 visa unless the Visa Waiver Program covers your home country. For your U.S. visa application, you will have to provide documents to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that explain the reasons for your trip and your trip itinerary.

Your visa validity could last between three months and 10 years and depends on your home country. You can enter the United States anytime, either once or multiple times within the period of time that the visa is valid.

How Long Can I Stay With a Visitor Visa?

The government official from Customs and Border Patrol (CBP) at your port of entry determines how long you can stay in the United States. The maximum is six months. You may extend this time, but you will have to apply 45 days before the visa expires, and immigration authorities may reject your extension. Your I-94 Form will indicate the length of stay. This is different from your visa expiry date. You can only stay as long as the I-94 Form indicates. Still, you can leave and re-enter the United States again during the visa validity period.

Study or Work-Exchange Visas (F, M, and J Visas)

If you plan to be a student in the United States, you will also need a visa. The first type of visa available to students is the F-1 visa for full-time students at an accredited educational institution. Institutions include colleges, high schools, seminaries, and conservatories. If you want to get a job, you can only have on-campus employment. The second type of visa is an F-2 visa, which is for spouses or children of F-1 visa holders. The final option is an F-3 visa for people who live in Canada or Mexico and commute to the United States for their studies.

Another type of student visa is the M visa , for students at vocational or other accredited nonacademic institutions. However, language training programs fall under the F visa category.

For work- or study-based exchange visitors, there is the J-1 visa. These visa holders could include teachers, interns, au-pairs, and other participants in exchange visitor programs. They must be part of a program that promotes cultural exchange. There are also specific categories of eligibility, such as proficiency in English. J-2 visas are for dependents of J-1 visa holders.

Employment Visas (H, L, Q P, C, D, G Visas)

Work visas allow people to enter the United States for a temporary period. The visa does not apply to indefinite or permanent work — only U.S. citizens and permanent residents can work in the country permanently. Your employer needs to start the visa application process by filing a petition with U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). If accepted, you can get a nonimmigrant work visa.

There are multiple visa classifications for temporary workers. H-1B and H-1B1 visas are for professional jobs. These jobs must require at least a bachelor’s degree. You must have an employer sponsor.

H-2A and H-2B visas are for seasonal work that don’t have available U.S. citizens as employees. This could include agricultural work.

L-1A or L-1B visas are for people transferring from within a multinational company to a U.S. office. O-1 visas are for people with unique talents. P-1A, P1-B, P2, and P-3 visas are for artists and entertainers. Q visas are for people participating in international cultural exchange. C-1, D, and C-1/D visas are for crew members of ships or airline employees.

G visas are diplomatic non-immigrant visas issued to individuals representing foreign governments who are working in international organizations in the United States.

How To Apply for a U.S. Nonimmigrant Visa

For a nonimmigrant visa application, you need to fill out Form DS-160 , pay a fee, and schedule an interview. Then, you need to get your documents and attend the visa interview.

Step1: Complete Form DS-160

First, you need to fill out Form DS-160 . You will need to provide lots of personal information. This information includes travel history , employment history, information about your family members, and more.

Step 2: Pay the Visa Fee

Next, you will have to pay an application fee. You will pay this to a consular section at a U.S. embassy or consulate responsible for visa services. The fee is $160. However, if you are a temporary worker, you will have to pay $190. You can pay this processing fee when you submit your application form.

Step 3: Schedule Your Visa Interview

The next step for visa applicants is to schedule an interview at a U.S. consulate or embassy. You should check ahead of time through the U.S. Department of State about appointment wait times. Check that there are no current travel restrictions, such as coronavirus pandemic-related ones. Your visa appointment wait time will depend on the U.S. Consulate General location you choose.

Step 4: Gather Supporting Documents

You will have to bring documents to your interview. These include a valid passport, a passport photograph, the Form DS-160 confirmation page, proof of payment, and a printout of your interview appointment letter.

You may also have to show proof of your nonimmigrant intent. This intent means evidence you will return to your home country after visiting the United States. For example, you may have to show your travel itinerary, employment documents from your home country, or invitation letters from family or friends.

Step 5: Attend Your Visa Interview

At your interview, you will have to swear under oath and have your fingerprints taken. The consular officer will review your application and documents. They may ask questions about why you want to visit, your itinerary, and how you will pay for it. The interview may be short or long. It is essential to give accurate answers.

Step 6: Receive a Decision From U.S. Embassy

After your visa issuance, you can travel to the United States anytime until the expiry date on the visa. You will show your visa and passport to the U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) officer at the port of entry.

Form I-94 is a record of your entries or exits from the United States. It is usually electronic now. You can either find it online or ask the officer at the port of entry for one.

It is very important to know the entry date on your Form I-94. You want to ensure you will not overstay your visa. Your I-94 exit date could be earlier than your visa expiry date. The I-94 date takes precedence over your visa stamp, so make sure to check the form carefully. U.S. immigration law enforces strong consequences for overstaying your visa, including travel bans from the United States.

US Visa Stamp Clearance Received or Department Authorization and Issues with DS160

US Visa Annotations: Clearance Received or Department Authorization Meaning ?

After you go for US Visa stamping, if it is approved, you get your passport with US visa stamp foil glued inside it. Sometimes, you may see some text in the annotation section, like the company name or other details… But it can be confusing when you see some text that says “Clearance Received” or something along that lines in the same annotation section.

Also, when you are applying for a US visa and filling out the DS-160 form or on USTravelDocs Portal website, you may encounter questions like the following:

Zolve Mobile Ad

  • Was your prior H1B Visa (temporary occupation, temporary worker, or trainee) annotated “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”? “
  • Was your prior H4 visa annotated “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”?
  • US visa – B1/B2 Visa with annotation “Clearance Received”

In this article, we look at what that means and how to answer DS-160 questions, including samples with screenshots.

Before we dive into the details, let’s first understand what annotations are in the US Visa foil and why that field exists.

What is the annotation field in US Visa? No Annotation? Samples?

The annotation field in the US visa stamp/foil is for the US Consular officer to put in additional notes related to your issued visa. Depending on the kind of visa, it could have details like University Name, Employer name, Work visa petition number, etc. Also, it could include restrictions or checks done so that it can help CBP officers at the port of entry. Below are some samples.

US Visa Stamp annotated  “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”

Some US visa applicants may get “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization” in the annotation field. It means that the US Consular officer while reviewing the applicant’s file, found some issues with the applicant’s records that might impact their ability to issue a US visa to that person. But, after further review of records, they believe that the applicant is eligible for the visa and can be issued. Then annotation ‘Clearance Received’ is to indicate the same.

The annotation ‘Clearance Received’ is an indication to CBP(Customs and Border Protection) officers at the US Port of Entry, when the applicant is going through US Port of entry procedures , about the history of the issue and the applicant can be admitted to the US if something shows up in their system.

Why would someone get the annotation ‘Clearance Received’ or ‘Department Authorization’

It could happen for one of the common reasons as listed below:

  • Applicant’s name matched with someone in their security lists like most wanted persons.
  • Some of the applicant’s history or documents raised some flags in their system for some reason due to matches.
  • Unknown reasons flagged by their National security systems
  • Many of these reasons cannot be said and we do not know why. It is confidential and US Dept of state does not release any information on this.

The key point to take away is, the US Dept of State did a thorough check on the applicant and they found that the applicant is good and can be issued US Visa. This will be part of the record and it will be used as reference in the future too.

DS-160 Application form “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization” – What to Answer?

When you are filling out the US Nonimmigrant Visa Application form, aka DS-160 form , you may come across questions tied to annotations like ‘ Was your prior H1B Visa (temporary occupation, temporary worker or trainee) annotated “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”? ” ‘ or it could be the same wording with other visas like H4 Visa or B1 /B2 Visa.

The first thing you need to check is your most recent US Visa stamp glued in your passport, if it says any of these words “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”, then you would answer “Yes” for that question. If the annotation section is blank or just has the employer name or school name, then you need to select ‘No’.

You should answer it truthfully as the US Visa stamp says, you cannot select the wrong option here. The US Consular system already has this information captured, so you should not try to lie or change it otherwise. If you do so, you could be penalized for stating the wrong information on the DS-160 form.

US Visa Dropbox Eligibility with ‘Clearance Received’ or ‘Department Authorization’?

Update : US Dept of State in India has updated their guidance and removed the question that used to ask users, “ Was your prior XXX visa (visa details XXX ) annotated ‘Clearance Received’ or ‘Department Authorization’? “. They have removed this starting from late April 2023. You will not even be asked the question in India. This was done to facilitate more people leverage the Dropbox Stamping option. You can check the US Dept of State Tweet below

More good news for U.S. visa renewals! Travelers with "clearance received" or "department authorization" on their previous visas can now use the interview waiver process to apply for a new visa. For additional interview waiver criteria, please see our website. pic.twitter.com/SW0X5U5sHa — U.S. Embassy India (@USAndIndia) April 27, 2023

When you are filling out your dropbox or interview waiver questionnaire on CGI Federal website, you maybe be asked the question, “ Was your prior XXX visa (visa details XXX ) annotated ‘Clearance Received’ or ‘Department Authorization’? “

The question clearly says prior XXX Visa, so you need to first check your most recent US Visa Stamp in your passport. You need to answer “Yes”, here, if see the words “‘Clearance Received’ or ‘Department Authorization” in the annotation section of your most recently issued US Visa in the XXX Visa category.

It looks like in the below screenshot for the H1B Visa Dropbox Questionnaire and the moment you select “Yes”, the system will automatically exit you out of the wizard and ask you to schedule an in-person interview.

Was Your prior H1B Visa annotated Clearance Received or Department Authorization

Modified US Visa Interview Waiver Question asking for ‘Clearance Received’ or ‘Department Authorization’

US Dept of State announced on Dec 23rd, 2021 the new Visa Interview Waiver option for Certain H1B, H4, and Others. This is applicable to anyone who had a previous US visa issued and does not have any other ineligibility on their visa or application. As part of the new questions asked to determine dropbox stamping eligibility, the USTravelDocs system has the question that says: “ Was your prior visa annotated “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”? as shown in the below screenshot.

You need to answer “Yes” to this question if you have the annotation text on your most recently issued or approved US Visa that says “ Clearance Received ” or “ Department Authorization “. If you have multiple US Visa stamps on your passport, look at the most recent one. If you see it closely, it says ‘prior’, meaning the most recent one. If you do not see any annotation on your Visa stamp, then you answer this as “No”. In general, if you answer “Yes” to this question, you would not be eligible for the interview waiver.

Was your Visa Annotated Clearance Received

Impact of US Visa stamp with “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”? Future?

In general, it should be fine, as the US Dept of State has all your information captured in the previous verification and vetting process. They will double-check the same to make it is the same and if there are any new changes related to your security status.

It would not directly impact your future US Visa stamping chances. Having said that, what it does indicate is that there was some issue with your name or any other details in their systems, you may be subject to a few more questions or screening in some places. So, be prepared with all the documentation in case any questions arise. Also, as mentioned above, you may not be able to get the US Visa renewal using the Dropbox option.

Also, sometimes Visa officer may stamp “ Cancelled Without Prejudice ” or “ CWOP ” on your old or valid US Visa, to understand the details, you may read details on Cancelled without Prejudice – US Visa – Meaning

Did you get this annotation in your Passport? What was your experience?

Hello, in my annotations of my j1 visa it says valid from 22. August- 17. December, these are my program dates I entered. With a J1 visa you are allowed to arrive 30 earlier than the program start. Can I then fly to the Us on the 15th of August?

Hi Kumar, I’m living in Canada and have open work permit. I got B1/B2 visa but in the Annotation they mentioned ” Canadian Permanent Resident”! which is by mistake and I never announce I have PR! do I need to correct my visa or there wont be any issue for travelling to US and coming back to Canada?

Jasmine, In general, it is for the CBP officers info and may or may not have impact. You can write to the US Consulate and seek clarification on the same. If they say that you need to get a new visa issued to replace that with something else like your work permit, then you can submit it. Email them and get something in writing so that you have something, if they ask you for documents.

I was approved of a single entry – US Visa issued May 10 and will expired on Sept 8… but apparently my visa has annotations that i will be attending a team meeting with exact dates which is Aug 14 to Aug 20, am i not allowed to extend my stay till Aug 30?

Gigi P, Usually, you should be able to stay until Aug 30th. The CBP officer gives you the date when you should exit the country. Most of the times, they give it for anywhere from few months to 6 months. Most cases, it is 6 months. But, depends on the case.

Guys here is my case -during my interview waiver appointment on 17th April 2023 VAC asked me to schedule normal interview and biometirc because i had clearance recieved stamp on last visa then i had taken normal appointment for july and then raised Emergency request , I got approval for an emergency appointment on 21st April 2023, I needed to book an emergency appointment before 28th April, but I was unable to book it becasue of “group size is larger than allocation” error , now even my Emergency approval is voided, now as per the latest announcement by New Delhi Embassy on 27th April 2023 for Clearance Received stamp on last visa , I am eligible for interview waiver also. But i cannot cancel My current appointment as i heard no show is applicable for dropbox also , i am feeling helpless now , don’t know what to do, any help will be appreciated

Hey amit. What happened eventually? did you get it stamped? Can you let me know what happened after that? any resolution

Hi, We recently received L2 blanket visa stamping for myself and my kids. In one my kids passport, the Annotation field is blank, however the petition number is correct. Will that be an issue for travelling?

Hi Kumar I have a question on dual citizen (non US) applying for US visa. What would be shown in the “Annotation”? Will show the second nationality or EVUS? Or the second nationality will not show at all? I had one annotation before as “Canadian Permanent Resident”. I was woundering whether it will show as “Canadian Citizen” this time? which I do not want.

I had an H1b with clearance received. My most recent visa is f1 with no issues. Now I am going again for H1b. Am I eligible for drop box or I need to schedule in person interview?

Hi! I’m currently in the US and was given single entry B1 visa with Annotation remarks of “business meetings from *Date1 to *Date2, *company” (six weeks in total). As for my I-94, I was given max of 6 months to stay in the US. Given that the annotation states an original plan of 6-week stay, will I get difficulties in applying for future visas if I extend up to roughly 6 months before my I-94 max date? Would appreciate all the inputs I can get. Thank you very much!

John, Well, this is subjective. Because you were given visa with some annotation, you should stick to plan you told them in application. It is hard to predict the future. Even though, you have I-94 issued, your case seems tricky as most of the users do not get any such annotations. Speak to an attorney for more guidance.

I had my in-laws go to an US Visa Interview for B1/B2 Visa in Oct 2022. Since he was working in Govt he was given Clearance received but Visa was approved for only 3 months and 1 time entry; His Passport was expiring within 6 months of Visa Interview.

Question : Does Visa Approval depends on when passport expires ?

Nikhil, Not exactly, they can give it beyond the passport expiry date. Only at the CBP they give it until the end of passport expiration. Every case is different and hard to say why someone get something shorter than others.

I was issued visa on 11jan2011 expiration 09 Jan 2021 Annotation: Department Authorization.14 Dec 2010. In this period i have travelled 3 times to USA . To renewal of visa i have paid my visa fee CGI REF NOS 730188796441 $ 160 date 28/12/2021. Till date i am not getting visa appointment. Please help.

While booking appointment it is asking visa annotated? I had J1 visa with annotation number and text bearer is not subject to section 212(e).. Should i select no and proceed here? Any help appreciated

vinod, If it exactly does not match with what they ask, it should not matter.

I hope you are doing good.

I have recently created a CGI account and paid the fee to get the reference number. Once I got my number, I somehow selected Yes when it asked for “Was your prior visa annotated ‘Clearance Received’ or ‘Department Authorization” and scheduled my appointment. I recently got my H1 B and was expecting the waiver option while scheduling the appointment, but I couldn’t get it. I was searching to see how I can change, then found your article, and thanks for the precise steps. I came on my F1 visa, and the Annotation shows my SEVIS number. Can I cancel the appointment and update my profile? Will it accept if I update my profile? Please kindly answer my question.

Thanks in advance!

Regards Kondal

Kondal, You can cancel and re-run the wizard like a new application, it will cancel the appointment and ask for the questions again.

Will it matter if we go for in person interview even after having this annotation question answered wrong? I dont think i can get any visa renewal dates for nov/dec and hence donot wish to cancel my scheduled interview appointment. Have you heard in the past if consulate rejected anyone’s visa for making this mistake and going for an inperson interview?

Kedar, Anything you enter online will be part of your record and you are signing it under oath. It is not about right or wrong, if something does not add up, then you will be in trouble. Knowingly doing a mistake should be avoided. Think about your life in US vs. one stamping… No one shares their story telling I lied on the website and was deported or rejected…so, you may or may not find cases. Try to be truthful and fix accordingly. They are opening many slots in October, so pick up one up then.

Hey Kumar can you please let me know how start a new application in cgi federal

Emmanuel, You will see an option on the left-hand side that says “new application/ schedule appointment”, which will restart the questionnaire again.

I made a mistake while answering this question, where I said “yes” to the question asking about an annotation of “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”, although there is no such annotation on my current visa. As a result, I did not receive the interview waiver that I am actually eligible for? Do you know how I can change this response?

Hi, Did you find a solution to this? Issue. I also made the same mistake

Has anybody found any solution?

Hello did you find any answer?

Hi, did anyone find any answer ?

Hello, I have a number starting with N00 under “Annotation” field but it doesn’t have text “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization”. Does having the number mean it falls under this category?

I am Cambodia, I Have my fiancé in US, US embassy in Cambodia give me visa but with words”CANCELED WITHOUT PREJUDICE “ what is happened? How can I do? Could tell me thanks u🙏

I (an Indian citizen) had applied for a B1/B2 Visa in 2019 and was given a Visitor Visa valid for 1 year, which has now expired. The Visa stamp has a “Clearance Received” on it, so its not eligible for extension via dropbox.

Since it is almost impossible to find B1/B2 in person slots, can I try to get an in-person appointment in another country ? or is it recommended to wait for in person slots to open up in the consulates within India ?

Hello I currently hold a B1,B2 and c1/D visa as a crew member on cruise ships. This was issued in 2016 in New Zealand. In the annotations on the B1, B2 page, there is nothing. On the C1/D page the annotations say ‘Norwegian Epic Cruise lines’, (not even the correct name of the cruise line!). So, that was the company I was working for then, but I now will be working for another cruise line who now sa that I will have to re-apply for my C1/D visa! Is this correct, why have they only put one cruise line. My agent says he’s never heard of this. Does this restrict me only to Norwegian cruise lines? Will I have to re-apply, the visa is valid until 2026!

Hi, my initial two H1B Visas have the annotation “clearance received”. However, my most recent visa and the one before that does NOT have this annotation. The word “prior” is confusing in this question. Can anyone suggest based on their experience if I need to answer this as Question as “Yes” or “No”? Thanks for your help!

Can someone shed some light on this above case posted by VM. I have the same doubt what if last 2 Visa stamped (since 2016) does not any annotation only 1st Visa does (2012) then Do I still qualify for drop box.

my b1/b2 application refused for drop box and i have been asked to use same visa fee information to book appointment cos i dnt qualify . i saw annotation and clearance received in my b1b2 visa what does it mean and what do i do

Hi Team, I have submitted my US Visa – appointment application form with US Visa stamp has “Clearance Received” or “Department Authorization” As “Yes” by mistake, but in my current expired visa it is blank. I am not able to change now. I have already paid the amount and not booked the slot. Please suggest what i need to do? Do i need to create new application for interview and pay the amount again? or what all other option i have?

Sumit, You can call the customer service and cancel the appointment. You can create a new application in USTravelDocs and then use the same receipt. Talk to the customer service or email them.

You may send the mail to call centre..some time they may give some information to update the correct answer

please tell me how to resolve this.. I have the same issue…

Hello Sumit, I have the same issue and trying to reach USTraveldocs. Can you tell me what did you do to take care of this situation?

please tell me what happened… I too have the same issue..

Hi Sumit, Were you able to fix it, Please provide your experience.

I got stamped for H1B first time on 14 Sept 2017. I got an annotation saying ” not valid for travel until 21-SEP-2017″ . I am assuming this annotation does not fall under “Clearance Received” or “Department of Authorization” and I am eligible for drop box ? Please suggest

Can someone please help me on this query

I am egyption working in kuwait today i received my b1/b2 visa but with annotation : escort doctor kuwaiti mimistri of health i asked the visa for tourism with the family and using it as an escort doctor for kuwaiti patients to us hospitals Is this annotation consider a restriction to travel for tourism with the family

Ameen, No, it is not a restriction. But, it is just that at CBP the officer may do additional checks.

Thanks kumar for responding

I got my VISA in Nov 2020 and in that VISA stamp there is an annotation “Excepted From or Not Subjected to PP 10052 “. Is this mean am I not eligible for dropbox next time? Do we consider only the wording ‘Clearance Required’ or ‘Department Authorization’? or any annotation(like above) will not eligible for dropbox? Please advise.

Thanks & Regards, Kishore

Ossama I applied for US Visa in 2018 so I went the interview and it takes long time, and the consular took my old passport and go to another one into and then come back again took the letter that I have it from the University. Then he came back and kept continue asking me about some country’s I went before, then he told. Me that I deserve the visa but he can’t take the decision and will put my Visa application under administrative processing. Then I kept send email to US embassy each 3 months and ask about my case situation. And it takes from May 29, 2018 to February 2020 then they told me send my passport to work on your visa application, a month later they send my passport back with a visa B2 for 4 months will expire at the end of July 2020 with annotation ( the name of the University with date 2018) So can I travel as a tourist with visa? Or I gonna get a problems with the officer in port because the issue I took the visa for it, not any more because it has been in 2018 ??? Please I need an answer from your experience in this situation

If you got approved for a 6 months b1/b2 us visa and when you received it under the annotation it say should fly by a certain date, does that mean you can’t fly after that date. The fly by date was only 20 days after the issue date. It is also has M right above the annotation

I have same question. Did you figure it out?

My past two visa Interview story:

December 2011 ================ I went for first-time visa stamping in Mumbai India. The VO asked me some questions and took an excuse and went to some senior officer. After 10 mins he came back and asked me if I have some documents that show my full name. I gave him my Degree certificates. He again left for 5 mins. He came back and said, “Your Visa is approved.” I collected my visa the same day in Mumbai.

September 2018 ================ I went for a Visa Interview in New Delhi. There the VO asked me some questions and told me she needs some time and closed the window and called one of her colleagues. They both were staring at the computer screen and were discussing something. After 5 mins she said she needs some more time and asked me to sit. I was sitting in the lobby and after around 10-15 mins she called me and said: “Your visa is approved.”. This time I had “Clearance Received” in my Visa.

=========== I am planning to go to Mexico for my Visa Stamping in October 2019. I have a valid visa stamped till November 2019. Should I be worried?

Well, hard to say… Both were done in India…In general, there could be some false alarms or something in their system that flags your application, so they could be discussing and then doing a review before approving it….Be confident, but have a backup plan, if something goes wrong….not to scare you, but just to be prepared ahead. Do update, how it goes here with community.

Also , to the term “Prior Visa” .It was a bit confusing as I had my last H1B visa stamp that did not have clearance received, but the visa stamp before that one had clearance received. I couldn’t get a clear answer from the customer support and I chose “No” for that question as i felt the question is for the most recent visa. I used the dropbox facility and got my Visa stamped in 2 days , no issues. So if any one has the same issue, you can go for the dropbox.

Murali, Thanks for sharing. Just to clarify, you mean to say, having ‘prior visa’ in the annotation field ?

My F1 Visa had clearance received Annotation back in 2010. But my H1B visa from 2014 and 2016 doesn’t have any annotation.

Can i answer “No” to “was your prior H1B visa annotated “Clearance Received or Department Authorization? during dropbox eligibility.

Did you get an answer to you question? I am in the same situation – my 2010 B1/B2 has annotation “Clearance Received” but my 2017 H1B doesn’t have any annotation. I answered the question as “No” and booked a drop-box appointment for April but now I am super confused if I an eligible for drop-box or not.

Sandeep, The best thing to do is contact consulate and get it clarified. This is a unique situation and no one knows, US consulate is the best one to advise. Do update here on what you hear for community benefit.

Hi Murali, This is my issue as well. Can I ask your dropbox location?

I have 2 questions about h1b visa stamping/renewal (not 1st time stamping). The 1st visa was stamped with administrative processing and have the annotation “clearance received” on the stamp with a date on it.

1) Does that date really mean anything? If i renew my visa prior to that clearance received date, would i get admin processing again? If so, that would be my 2nd question

2) If my old visa stamp isn’t expire, can i come back to US if I do get administrative processing and VO didn’t take my passport? That way i can still work in US while waiting for the visa approval.

For citizens of mexico.

The Border Crossing Card (BCC) is both a BCC and a B1/B2 visitor’s visa. A BCC (also referred to as a DSP-150) is issued as a laminated card, which has enhanced graphics and technology, similar to the size of a credit card. It is valid for travel until the expiration date on the front of the card, usually ten years after issuance.

Border Crossing Card Validity

  • The new card is valid for ten years after issuance, except in the cases of some children (see  Border Crossing Card Fees ).
  • “Laser visas” issued prior to October 1, 2008 are still valid for travel until the expiration date on the front of the card.

Qualifying for a Border Crossing Card

  • B1/B2 visa/Border Crossing Cards are only issued to applicants who are citizens of and resident in Mexico.
  • Applicants must meet the eligibility standards for B1/B2 visas.
  • They must demonstrate that they have ties to Mexico that would compel them to return after a temporary stay in the United States.

Applying for a Border Crossing Card

BCC applicants must make an application using the normal procedures set by consular sections in Mexico. Refer to the websites of the U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico for details.

Required Documentation

All applicants for a B1/B2 visa/Border Crossing Card must have a valid Mexican passport at the time of application.

Border Crossing Card Fees

For current fees for Department of State services, select Fees .

Mexican children under 15 years of age pay a reduced fee for a Border Crossing Card. The child must have at least one parent who holds a valid BCC or is applying for a BCC. BCC's issued for the reduced fee expire on the child’s 15 th birthday. If the full fee is paid, the child receives a BCC valid for the full ten years.

References - U.S. Laws

Section 104 of the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act of 1996 (IIRIRA) serves as the legal basis for the issuance of Border Crossing Cards.

If you’re new to TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you may be wondering what a Known Traveler Number (KTN) is, how it works, and why there’s a KTN box when booking flights, but there isn’t one for your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry number. Here’s what you should know about your KTN.

What Is a Known Traveler Number?

Your Known Traveler Number is your membership number with a Trusted Traveler Program. This number is what allows you to access TSA PreCheck security lanes and Global Entry lanes (depending on which Trusted Traveler Program you join).

How To Get a Known Traveler Number

To acquire a Known Traveler Number, you must participate in one of the Trusted Traveler Programs. These are:

  • Global Entry
  • TSA PreCheck

Global Entry and TSA PreCheck are by far the most popular options in the U.S. The NEXUS and SENTRI programs also provide a Known Traveler Number, though these programs are much less commonly used in the U.S.

Credit Cards That Reimburse for Global Entry, TSA PreCheck, and/or NEXUS Application Fees

Many premium credit cards will reimburse you for the application fee for either Global Entry or TSA PreCheck (including American Express, Capital One, Chase, and Citi, which all provide cards that offer an application fee reimbursement).

Since several cards offer this benefit, consider the other benefits of your credit card options before you choose one. Look at the points they earn, trip delay protection, purchase protection, elite status, or airport lounge access.

If your priority is earning tons of valuable (and transferable!) points, you might choose the Chase Sapphire Reserve card . It earns 5x points on air travel and 10x points on hotels and car rentals when you purchase travel through Chase Travel, 10x points on Lyft (through March 2025), 3x points on all other travel, and it comes with a Priority Pass Select membership for lounge access. You’ll also receive a $300 travel credit that is automatically applied to your first $300 in travel purchases each cardmember year (this includes taxis, Uber , Lyft , train tickets, flights, hotels, and more).

If airport lounge access and elite status are your top priorities, the Amex Platinum card and Amex Business Platinum card provide world-class lounge access , including Centurion Lounges and Delta Sky Clubs (when flying Delta), on top of a Priority Pass Select membership upon enrollment. Cardholders also receive elite status with both Hilton Honors and Marriott Bonvoy upon enrollment. To top it off, you’ll earn 5x Membership Rewards points when booking flights directly with an airline.

And for travelers who value simplicity in earning and redeeming their rewards along with a reasonable annual fee, consider the Capital One Venture X card . It earns 2x Capital One miles on all purchases and comes with the lowest annual fee among the most popular premium credit cards.

Whichever card you choose, all you have to do is use it to pay for the Global Entry or TSA PreCheck application fee, and you’ll automatically be reimbursed.

How To Find Your Known Traveler Number

Hot Tip: You can find your PASSID  (also known as your Known Traveler Number) on the back of your Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI card.

If you only have TSA PreCheck, log in to the Trusted Traveler Program website to access your PASSID/Known Traveler Number. If you lose your Global Entry, NEXUS, or SENTRI card, you can use the Trusted Traveler Program site to find the number.

How To Add Your Known Traveler Number to Bookings

Delta Known Traveler Number

While it might not be apparent at first, you’ll be happy to know that your TSA PreCheck or Global Entry number is, in fact, your Known Traveler Number. Simply enter your Known Traveler Number in the appropriate field when booking your flight. This can also be done later — even at the check-in desk at the airport.

The vast majority of the time, you do not need to carry your Global Entry card to access the airport’s TSA PreCheck or Global Entry lanes. That said, there have been some recent reports of travelers being asked to show their physical card. This appears to happen most at airports that allow travelers with Global Entry to preclear security, especially for flights departing from Canada. It also may happen when entering the U.S. by car via NEXUS or SENTRI lanes.

Hot Tip:  Unlike when returning from most countries, if you want to access Global Entry lanes when returning from Canada, you will need your physical Global Entry card with you.

Global Entry or TSA PreCheck: Which One Is Right for You?

As anyone who’s been through airport security knows, it can be a frustrating hassle. To expedite the screening process  at many U.S. airports, TSA PreCheck access provides a much better experience. If you are returning to the U.S. from an international destination, Global Entry can make getting through customs a breeze.

If you mainly travel within the U.S., you might think that you only need to get TSA PreCheck — this is understandable, considering the fee is $78 compared to $100 for Global Entry.

However, a Global Entry membership also provides access to TSA PreCheck. When you account for the application fee reimbursement offered by several credit cards, why wouldn’t you go ahead and get Global Entry? With the right card, the impact on your wallet is the same — neither should cost you a dime!

By getting Global Entry, you can enjoy a quicker security experience when boarding flights in the U.S. If you decide to travel abroad, you can take comfort in the fact that returning to the U.S. will be easy.

Hot Tip:  If you have additional questions, don’t miss our piece on the top Global Entry FAQs and TSA PreCheck FAQs .

Final Thoughts

Airports are becoming busier by the year, so having access to TSA PreCheck and Global Entry is vital for quicker and smoother security screenings. With so many credit cards offering to reimburse you for the application fee, there is no excuse not to have a Known Traveler Number.

Whether you get TSA PreCheck or Global Entry, you’ll be all set for a better airport experience — just enter your PASSID/Known Traveler Number when booking your flight.

What time the 2024 solar eclipse started, reached peak totality and ended

By Sarah Maddox

Updated on: April 9, 2024 / 5:04 AM EDT / CBS News

The 2024 solar eclipse will be visible across North America today. As the moon's position between the Earth and sun casts a shadow on North America, that shadow, or umbra, will travel along the surface from west to east at more than 1,500 miles per hour along the path of totality .

That means the eclipse will start, peak and end at different times — as will the moments of total darkness along the path of totality — and the best time to view the eclipse depends on where you are located. Some places along the path will have more totality time than others.

In Texas, the south-central region had clouds in the forecast , but it was better to the northeast, according to the National Weather Service. The best eclipse viewing weather was expected in New Hampshire, Vermont and Maine, as well as in Canada's New Brunswick and Newfoundland.

What time does the 2024 total solar eclipse start?

Eclipse map of totality

The total solar eclipse will emerge over the South Pacific Ocean before the shadow falls across North America, beginning in parts of Mexico. The path of totality , where onlookers can witness the moon fully blocking the sun (through eclipse viewing glasses for safety ), is expected to first make landfall near the city of Mazatlán around 9:51 a.m. MT.

The total solar eclipse will cross over the U.S.-Mexico border into Texas, where it will emerge over Eagle Pass at 12:10 p.m. CT and then peak at about 1:27 p.m. CT.

In Dallas, NASA data shows the partial eclipse will first become visible at 12:23 p.m. CT and peak at 1:40 p.m. CT. The next states in the path of totality are Oklahoma and Arkansas, where the eclipse begins in Little Rock at 12:33 p.m. CT.

Cleveland will see the beginning of the eclipse at 1:59 p.m. ET. Darkness will start spreading over the sky in Buffalo, New York, at 2:04 p.m. ET. Then, the eclipse will reach northwestern Vermont, including Burlington, at 2:14 p.m. ET. Parts of New Hampshire and Maine will also follow in the path of totality before the eclipse first reaches the Canadian mainland  at 3:13 p.m. ET.

Although the experience won't be exactly the same, viewers in all the contiguous U.S. states outside the path of totality will still be able to see a partial eclipse. Some places will see most of the sun blocked by the moon, including Washington, D.C., where the partial eclipse will start at 2:04 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:20 p.m. ET.

In Chicago, viewers can start viewing the partial eclipse at 12:51 p.m. CT, with the peak arriving at 2:07 p.m. CT.  In Detroit, viewers will be able to enjoy a near-total eclipse beginning at 1:58 p.m. ET and peaking at 3:14 p.m. ET.

New York City will also see a substantial partial eclipse, beginning at 2:10 p.m. ET and peaking around 3:25 p.m. ET.

In Boston it will begin at 2:16 p.m. ET and peak at about 3:29 p.m. ET.

The below table by NASA shows when the eclipse will start, peak and end in 13 cities along the eclipse's path.

What time will the solar eclipse reach peak totality?

Millions more people will have the chance to witness the total solar eclipse this year than during the last total solar eclipse , which was visible from the U.S. in 2017.

The eclipse's peak will mean something different for cities within the path of totality and for those outside. Within the path of totality, darkness will fall for a few minutes. The longest will last more than 4 minutes, but most places will see between 3.5 and 4 minutes of totality. In cities experiencing a partial eclipse, a percentage of the sun will be obscured for more than two hours.

Mazatlán is set to experience totality at 11:07 am PT. Dallas will be able to see the moon fully cover the sun at 1:40 p.m. CT. Little Rock will start to see the full eclipse at 1:51 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 3:13 p.m. ET and Buffalo at 3:18 p.m. ET. Totality will reach Burlington at 3:26 p.m. ET before moving into the remaining states and reaching Canada around 4:25 p.m.

Outside the path of totality, 87.4% of the sun will be eclipsed in Washington, D.C. at 3:20 p.m. ET, and Chicago will have maximum coverage of 93.9% at 2:07 p.m. CT. New York City is much closer to the path of totality this year than it was in 2017; it will see 89.6% coverage at 3:25 p.m. EDT.

Detroit is another city that will encounter a near-total eclipse, with 99.2% maximum coverage at 3:14 p.m. ET. Boston will see 92.4% coverage at 3:29 p.m. ET.

What time will the solar eclipse end?

The eclipse will leave continental North America from Newfoundland, Canada, at 5:16 p.m. NT, according to NASA.

At the beginning of the path of totality in Mazatlán, the eclipse will be over by 12:32 p.m. PT, and it will leave Dallas at 3:02 p.m. CT. The eclipse will end in Little Rock at 3:11 p.m. CT, Cleveland at 4:29 p.m. CDT and Buffalo at 4:32 p.m. ET. Burlington won't be far behind, with the eclipse concluding at 4:37 p.m. ET.

Meanwhile, the viewing will end in Chicago at 3:21 p.m. CT, Washington, D.C. at 4:32 p.m. ET, and New York City at 4:36 p.m. ET.

In Detroit, the partial eclipse will disappear at 4:27 p.m. ET, and in Boston, it will be over at 4:39 p.m. ET.

How long will the eclipse last in total?

The total solar eclipse will begin in Mexico at 11:07 a.m. PT and leave continental North America at 5:16 p.m. NT. From the time the partial eclipse first appears on Earth to its final glimpses before disappearing thousands of miles away, the celestial show will dazzle viewers for about 5 hours, according to timeanddate.com .

The length of the total solar eclipse at points along the path depends on the viewing location. The longest will be 4 minutes and 28 seconds, northwest of Torreón, Mexico. Near the center of the path, totality takes place for the longest periods of time, according to NASA.

Spectators will observe totality for much longer today than during the 2017 eclipse , when the longest stretch of totality was 2 minutes and 32 seconds.

The moon's shadow seen on Earth today, called the umbra, travels at more than 1,500 miles per hour, according to NASA. It would move even more quickly if the Earth rotated in the opposite direction.

What is the longest a solar eclipse has ever lasted?

The longest known totality was 7 minutes and 28 seconds in 743 B.C. However, NASA says this record will be broken in 2186 with a 7 minute, 29 second total solar eclipse. The next total solar eclipse visible from parts of the U.S. won't happen until Aug. 23, 2044.
