Winemaking is no stranger to the coastal region of New England. So much so that this area can be identified as the Coastal Wine Trail, not just to locals, but nationally.

As a wine enthusiast, whether you are just starting out or have years of experience, one of the greatest insights is knowing that great wine does not come just from Italy or France, but also right here in the states.

Although most wineries offer online orders, there is no better experience than visiting a winery and vineyard. If New England is your destination, you will not fall short in finding a perfect winery to visit.

New England Wineries

Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod – Truro, MA

Located in the peaceful, seaside setting of Truro, Truro Vineyards is one place you will not want to miss. Perched between Cape Cod and the Atlantic Ocean,

Truro Vineyards is an almost 200 year old farmhouse estate run by the Roberts family, spreading across five acres.

Enjoy a variety of reds, whites, and signature series blends as you catch the calming ocean breeze next to over 44,000 acres of protected national seashore. Truro Vineyards is known in the region for growing Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc.

You can also visit their new onsite distillery, South Hollow Spirits, which produces Twenty Boost Rums and Dry Line Gin all in a 250 gallon pot still. Enjoy a delicious cocktail or glass of wine in a laid back environment.

Truro Vineyards often has live entertainment events to attend while visiting. Check out their event calendar here . Food trucks can often be spotted on the estate during warmer weather, so it is perfect for a bite and a drink! Truro Vineyards offers private and reserved tastings as well.

Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard – Little Compton, RI

Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard was founded over forty years ago, having an ideal climate and soil conditions to be one of the best vineyards in New England.

Spreading over 150 acres of land, the vineyard produces dessert wine, rose, and white barrel-aged wine. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard has award-winning varieties of Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Vidal Blanc, and more.

Enjoy on demand, first come first serve, wine tastings in the afternoon as well as good food at the Vineyard bistro. A sun-soaked New England day can be spent at a tasting room on the property, with room on the front lawn to spread out on a wooden chair.

Founded in 1995, Newport Vineyards is family owned and operated by the Nunes brothers located just about 10 minutes away from the town of Newport, known for its resort atmosphere.

Newport Vineyards stretches across 100 acres of preserved farmland, aiming to bring the Napa Valley wine experience to New England. The vineyard produces over twenty handcrafted reds, whites, rose, and specialty wines through sustainable farming practices.

While visiting Newport Vineyards, take a trip to their small-batch brew house Taproot Brewing which features hop-forward brews and local flavors. On top of this, enjoy delectable food at the Brix Restaurant, which sources local ingredients for a farm to table experience. Maugle Sierra Vineyard – Ledyard, CT

Just 10 minutes from Mystic Seaport, Maugle Sierra Vineyard is nestled in Coastal New England, representing a true rolling hills aesthetic. Since 2002, Maugle Sierra has been producing a variety of premium handcrafted and locally grown wines.

All grapes used for their wines are either grown on-site or within a 100 mile radius from the vineyard. For wine tasters who enjoy fruit-forward beverages, Maugle Sierra has a staple wine blend of blackberry and plum called St. Croix.

Jonathon Edwards Winery is family-run and home to both Connecticut and Napa Valley. The winery’s North Stonington location is placed on a secluded, romantic scenic hilltop, spreading 50 acres. J

onathan Edwards motto, “bringing the heart of Napa Valley to New England” is upheld by the use of grapes from both locations being used for their wine blends.

Their selection includes elegant whites, blushes, and reds. For cinnamon enthusiasts, their 2019 Cabernet Franc features cinnamon, nutmeg, and hints of spicy cherry and cranberry flavors.

Jonathan Edwards Winery is open daily and year round. They offer tastings, tours, and private and public events. Masks are currently required for all unvaccinated guests.

Westport Rivers Vineyard – Westport, MA

Run by the fifth generation Russell family winemakers, Westport Rivers Vineyard spreads across 80 beautiful acres of farm land. The rich soil paired with the cool climate by the gulf stream helps to produce crisp and aromatic wines.

Their delicious blends highlight local regional flavors that Westwood Rivers is known for. Enjoy the summer with their signature blend, the Pinot Noir Rose that features watermelon, strawberry, red berries, and herbs.

View out into the vineyard as you sip their signature wines at the lawn, patio, or on their Adirondack chairs which are all on a first come first serve basis. During colder temperatures you can keep warm and enjoy the vineyard as they offer fire pits and cozy bubbles.

Greenvale Vineyards – Portsmouth, RI

Since 1982, Greenvale Vineyards has been owned by the same family along the serene Sakonnet River. Set on lush farmland, the estate is dedicated to growing and producing quality wines including chardonnay, Vidal Blanc, and varietal blends.

Here, you can find yourself tasting a unique Rhode Island vermouth while soaking in the sun on the vineyard’s lawn. Greenvale Vineyards is committed to the preservation of open space.

Currently, due to COVID-19 regulations, the vineyard is not taking reservations and instead has everything on a first come first serve basis. Tables are limited to 8 people and up to 15 if you bring your own blankets to the picnic area of the vineyard lawn.

Preston Ridge Vineyard – Serving Preston, CT

Overlooking breathtaking views of the Connecticut countryside, Preston Ridge Vineyards sits on 60 pastoral acres. It is a family-owned and operated vineyard founded in 2008 by the combined families; the Sawyers and the Helms.

Preston Ridge has an extensive variety of wines including Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, Riesling, Triaminette, Vidal Blanc and Baco Noir. If you enjoy sweeter wines, try out their popular Estate Harvest Blend that has hints of honey and peach.

Stonington Vineyards – Stonington, CT

Spreading across 58 serene acres, in 1987, Stonington Vineyards was established by Nick and Happy Smith. Stonington is one of the oldest vineyards in Connecticut and in 2014 went through a major renovation.

The vineyard is associated with tradition and quality and offers wine varieties of chardonnay, Cabernet franc, and more. You can enjoy your wine on their widespread lawn and even bring your pets and children.

Various events are held at Stonington Vineyards including sip and paint, concerts, festivals, etc. Check here for event updates. Wine tastings are offered daily and yearly. Group reservations for tastings are required if the party is of seven or more guests.

Seven Birches Winery – Lincoln, NH

Seven Birches Winery is placed in the five-star Riverwalk Resort at Loon Mountain. Seven Birches produces its wine by sourcing European grape varieties as well as local fruits blended together for a distinctive fruity flavor.

Try out their Strawberry Wine for a delicate and fruity summer blend. Outside of wine, Seven Birches also offers a line of hard ciders called Rhythm Craft Cider. If you are looking for a drink harder than wine, their ciders are the way to go!

Seven Birches offers an informal winery tour called Meet the Winemakers every Wednesday and Saturday. Each tour is guided by a specific winemaker.

The winery also offers tasting rooms and a wine bar at its two locations that are in walking distance of each other. The winery facility and tasting room are located in the Riverwalk Resort while the wine bar is located at the Atrium Wine Bar.

Tips for Visiting a Tasting Room

If you are visiting a tasting room for the first time , you may be intimidated by it, especially if you are a beginner wine enthusiast. This is nothing to be embarrassed about as many tasting rooms will have different atmospheres and rules.

The best you can do is have a general understanding of some tasting room etiquette and notions. Here are a few tips for when you are visiting a tasting room at a winery.

Don’t Wear Over-Bearing Fragrances

Wine is a beverage that runs heavily on different senses. The aroma of a wine is a large part of its taste. If the aroma is disrupted by an outside smell, such as the perfume or cologne you are wearing, it could ruin your tasting experience. If you choose to wear a fragrance, it is best you choose one that is on the lighter side.

Wine is Made For Drinking, So Drink

If it is your first time visiting a tasting room, you may be confused as to why some people are not fully drinking and indulging in the wine they are tasting. This may cause you to want to acclimate to what others are doing, but you do not need to do this.

At a tasting you will have a variety of wines before you to try and if you are not planning on visiting several other wineries afterwards, it is okay to let loose and indulge fully in the wines. The point of a tasting is to have fun and enjoy.

Drink in Moderation If You are Visiting Multiple Locations

If you are visiting multiple wineries in a day, it is best you drink in moderation. You would not want to be going into your second out of three wineries for the day completely obliterated.

For one, you may be cut off from being able to drink at the establishments, but also drinking too much could catch up to you, making you physically ill before the visitations are over. The wine tasting experience will also not be the same if your taste buds are already shot.

Be Open-Minded

The point of visiting a wine tasting room is to try a variety of blends. You should go into every tasting room you visit with an open mind because you never know what you may stumble upon that you will like.

Not all reds taste the same, nor whites, etc. Every wine is unique and different, therefore you should give more than just your usual go to a try. A tasting room is a safe place to discover wine blends of all sorts.

You probably don’t think of New England when you think of wine, but there’s a surprisingly great selection of wineries in this area.

New England is a home for notable wines that are distinguishable from other wine-growing states in the country. There are five states in New England including Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, and Connecticut – each with its own distinctive wine culture and growing conditions. 

With rocky soils and elevations as high as 1,000 feet above sea level, Connecticut makes an ideal location for growing Riesling and other popular varieties such as Cabernet Franc, Chardonnay, Pinot Noir, Seyval Blanc, and Vidal Blanc. The lands in this area also comprise a large percentage of ancient soil, leftovers from the formations of Pangea, which adds to the uniqueness of the wines that New England offers.

Rhode Island, another grape-growing part of New England, is famous for its wine trails and excursions. While it seems to occupy be a small area on the map, Rhode Island is known for producing delectable and likable wines brought by their location’s moderate conditions.

Cape Cod, on the other hand, is known for growing low-alcohol wines that are made from fruits like sour cherries, plums, and apples.

The remaining states, Maine, New Hampshire, and Vermont, are known for amazing pubs, local craft wineries, and small vineyards that have atmospheres for every type of connoisseur. 

Here are some of my favorite wineries in New England that you should definitely check out any time of year!

15. Cellardoor Winery

Cellardoor Winery is located in Lincolnville, Maine. The winery is known for its tastings, tours, food pairings, cooking classes, winemaker dinners, and alfresco events held in their relaxing vineyard area. They also have a gift shop where you can browse for novel items to bring home for loved ones. 

What we like about this winery is the quality and price of their wine flight. For $15, you get to taste four different wines and bring home the glass. Their staff also explains the wines and the place’s history in an interesting way that gets you hooked. 

If you’re here for the ambiance, worry not – their well-maintained vineyard and thoughtful winery can easily make your wine experience magical.

14. Zorvino Vineyards

Zorvino Vineyards is a place for endless photoshoots! If you’re staying in New Hampshire as a tourist, a quick visit to Zorvino can leave you with beautiful, Instagrammable pictures to cherish. For a picture-perfect shoot, look for their zen koi pond, waterscapes, vineyards, wine barrels, and signature red barn. 

Zorvino offers a wide selection of wines including red, white, and fruit wines. If you’re the classic type, ask for their Classico menu.

If you’re feeling adventurous, order a glass of their in-house crafted fruit wine or go ahead and ask for their Zorvino menu. Add a plate of pasta or pizza to complete the experience. This is one of the best wineries in New England to spend a full afternoon!

13. Boyden Valley Winery & Spirits

Boyden Valley Winery is located in the green mountains of Cambridge, Vermont. Their vineyard is an 800-acre farm that has been in the hands of the Boyden family for more than a century. Boyden Valley is known to be one of the pioneering licensed wineries in the state. The grapes they produce for their wine are grown alongside vegetables, sugarbush, and other farming kettles. 

Enjoy and relax with a glass of Glogg, a Norwegian mulled wine, or a glass of Maple Cream Wine in their back patio overlooking the rolling greens and mountains. If the patio is occupied, you may also cozy up in their 1875 carriage house just around the area. 

They did scale their hours back, so call them ahead to secure a spot!

12. The Griswold Inn

Griswold Inn is a historic location just near the Connecticut state wine trail. The inn opened for business in 1776, offering wine and spirits in an antique, old-fashioned dining room that brings you back in time. Not only is the inn super cool, but it’s also one of the most interesting wineries in New England that definitely deserves a visit.

Enjoy a cocktail, a glass of wine, or a hearty meal in their dining area. Expect a big “Hunter’s Breakfast” every Sunday if you’re staying for the weekend.

Up for an adventure? Ask their staff to direct you to the wine trail to sample different wines and visit iconic wineries in the area, including Chamard Vineyards, Jonathan Edwards Winery, and Priam Vineyards. 

The Griswold Inn does get a little cramped up because it’s pretty popular, so making early reservations are ideal.

11. Newport Vineyards

Nestled in the heart of Rhode Island, Newport Vineyards is a landmark destination of the county that offers enthusiasts a taste of local experience through daily excursions, tours, and tastings. The vineyard was established in 1995 and is run by the Nunes brothers who are knowledgeable and open about their experience.

Visit their Brix restaurant for farm-to-table dishes, their Vineyard Cafe for wine and other beverages, and their event grounds for spontaneous live events. For the real deal, get a taste of their $12 wine flight and join them for an in-depth tour. 

If you’re simply up for a glass, we recommend getting their Sauv Blanc and Dry Rose. For the classics, ask for their Merlot, Moscato, Pinot Noir, or Apple Cider. 

The best time to witness the blooming vines in Newport Vineyards is during the warm seasons. This is one of my favorite wineries in New England because I’m just obsessed with Newport – I find that it’s a really classy experience right here in New England!

10. Seven Birches Winery

Seven Birches Winery is located within the Riverwalk Resort at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire. It’s one of the best wineries in New England for year-round experiences.

The winery is like a museum for connoisseurs, offering a delightful array of wines, tours, and tasting excursions that are available daily. Their in-house wine is proudly 100% New Hampshire and locally made from classic European grape varietals and distinct fruits. 

For their wine, ask for their two best-selling labels, “Riverwalk” and “Windy Ridge”. Riverwalk is created from globally sourced grapes and Windy Ridge is the brand’s in-house crafted wine made from locally sourced fruits.

If you’re feeling overwhelmed, have their staff help you choose. They are normally very friendly and approachable, so don’t hesitate to ask!

9. Gouveia Vineyards

Gouveia Vineyards was only recently established in 2004 by a Portuguese family. The owner’s goal was to bring their village’s legacy to the United States where their family continued to pursue the American dream. 

Gouveia Vineyards is one of the largest, well-maintained vineyards in Connecticut. Drinking wine on a fall day is like living in a romantic film. The seating is huge, so there are no problems with social distancing. They have large umbrellas for sunny days and fire pits for cold afternoons. 

Get a taste of their Whirlwind Semi-Sweet Rose or Sunset Red. If you’re indecisive, you can always ask for their tasting plan. For $15, you can select five wines and a souvenir glass to bring home.

8. Black Bear Vineyard 

Black Bear Vineyard is located in Salisbury, New Hampshire, and is run by passionate owners with a credible background in winemaking. The expanding greenery and mountain view can also be seen from their patio, offering you to breathe in the fresh breeze while sipping from your glass of wine. 

For their wine, ask for their La Crescent, Frontenac, and Vino Cappuccino on your next visit. If you are just starting your wine journey, do not hesitate to start a friendly conversation with the owners and staff. They are passionate, knowledgeable, and patient, so there’s really nothing to regret in visiting this humble winery in Salisbury.

7. Maugle Sierra Vineyard

Maugle Sierra is a vineyard and winery located just a couple of minutes away from the Mystic Seaport in Connecticut. They offer wines made with grapes and fruits that are grown on-site. Have a taste of their beautifully named wines with a plate of anything sweet from their dessert menu. Ask for their  Que, Sera, Syrah or Ledyard Sunset Red. They also allow packed food, so if you wish to have a picnic with their delectable wines and food from home, go for it! 

Maugle Sierra’s dining space is cozy and spacious which leaves an ample amount of space for social distancing. You may also hold medium to large-sized gatherings as long as you let them know ahead of time. 

Whether you’re coming with a large group or are here on a date night, Maugle Sierra’s is one of the best wineries in New England because the wine is really top-notch.

6. Truro Vineyards

Truro Vineyards is located in Cape Cod and is one of the pioneering common grape vineyards in the region back when they started in 1991. Truro grows well-known wines from merlot, chardonnay, to cabernet franc wine grape varieties, picking each harvest by hand.

The sandy soil, warm breeze, and moderate climate also contribute to the wines’ flavor and character, making each bottle distinct and intense compared to wines in neighboring states. 

For $15, you get to experience an array of spirits from whites, reds, roses, and dessert wines. If you’re looking for a fun drink, you can get a glass of their unique and strong blend of cocktails for $10. You can also pair your drink with munchies being sold from the food truck.

In Flag Hill Distillery And Winery, there is something for everyone. This is one of my favorite all-around awesome wineries in New England – we’ve been here too many times to count!

Find beers, spirits, wines, and four-course meals to indulge and dig in. Flag Hill is also one of the few wineries that offer brunch and dinner meals served with spirits of choice. 

Flag Hill’s wine-tasting flight is composed of 5 varieties of wine paired with a delicious variety of cheeses, savory crackers, and olives. They usually pick up French-American and Minnesota hybrid grapes to produce their white, red, fruit and sparkling wine. There are also curated drink blends for the adventurous type in your group. 

The 17th-century barn-turned-winery really completed the authentic and old-fashioned atmosphere of this place. It speaks so much of history, legacy, and passion!

4. Nashoba Valley Winery

If you want the Napa Valley feel here in New England then you definitely need to check out this winery.

N ashoba Valley has been operating for over 30 years and is proud to produce unconventional wines. They are proud of their locally grown fruit-based wines from the farms of Massachusets. This was Jack Patridge, the owner’s goal – to grow wines in a very unlikely location and offer locals a taste of their very own wine.

The tasting tour is a bit on the pricey side, but you get more than you usually expect. The wines are exceptional, the tour guide is very accomodating, and the winery is charming. Definitely try their fruit wines, especially their raspberry dessert wine for a unique experience. They have charcuterie boards, sandwiches, and cocktail food to pair with your drink as well. 

They also have fun non-wine activities that you can set up to do with the kids or with a partner. Depending on the season’s harvest, you can reserve a slot for apple or peach picking. 

Tables tend to be packed, so call ahead to reserve a seat!

3. Cape Cod Winery

Cape Cod Winery is a notable winery located in Falmouth. The area where it is situated holds a rich agricultural history that dates back to the early 1900s. When you visit Cape Cod Winery, expect a lot of regulars, familiars, and locals greeting the owners Pete and Erika Orlandella. 

Cape Cod Winery also hosts all kinds of events throughout the year – from live events to wine-and-yoga experiences. Through these events, you’ll see how locals in New England really love coming together!

Their wine selection includes classic reds, whites, roses, and sparkling wine. They also offer basic comfort food but allow guests to bring their own packed food.

2. 1620 Wine Bar

1620 Wine Bar is a trendy modern winery located in Plymouth, Massachusetts complete with a wide array of wine selections, a full tapas menu, live music, and wine tasting tours. Their tapas menu is to die for! Try their Caprese Salad, Garlic Shrimp, and Arugula Salad. Pairs well with a glass of 1620 Oaked Chardonnay!

What we loved about 1620 Wine Bar is also its prime and accessible location. If you’re on a trip, you’re in luck. Located in a plaza, this winery is close to local art and craft stores where you can browse novel items to bring home.

1. LaBelle Winery

Labelle Winery is a young and trendy winery in New Hampshire with under 20 years of operation. Despite its pre-mature impression to the wine-making industry, LaBelle proved itself by producing classic Old-World style wines that captured both the hearts of veteran and new connoisseurs. 

Locals’ favorites include their well-balanced Chardonnay, intense and spicy Malbec, and fruity Seyval Blanc. Other classic Old-world style wines they produce include Chardonnay, Riesling, and Gewurztraminer. 

If you’re visiting, also look forward to LaBelle’s trendy, fun-filled upcoming events. Activities may include live music, comedy nights, cooking demos, and art galleries. Perfect for bringing out your creative spirit while sipping a glass of wine!

Maugle Sierra Vineyards produces premium wine from Estate Connecticut and New England Grapes.

While sipping, you can picnic on their wine patio or the Rendezvous Overlook to view 11 acres of grape-growing vines on the sprawling country estate among the fresh coastal breeze. Stay till late afternoon to enjoy the gorgeous sunset.

4. Bartlett Estate Winery – Gouldsboro, ME

Of these New England wineries, Bartlett Estate Winery is probably one of the more unique ones.

Their winery doesn’t use grapes at all. Instead, they use blueberry for reds, pears and apples for whites, and blackberries for dessert wine.

What’s more, Bartlett wines are naturally fermented, using minimal intervention practices.

Their sister company, Bartlett Spirits of Maine Distillery, produces award-winning rum and brandy.

6. Truro Vineyards of Cape Cod – North Truro, MA

With over 75% of its land designated as a National Seashore, Truro seems an unlikely place for a vineyard.

And yet this is the only vinifera vineyard in Cape Cod, growing Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. This makes Truro Vineyards one of the must-visit New England wineries. They also source grapes from Massachusetts, New York, and California.

On the grounds, you can also find South Hollow Spirits , producing Rum, Gin, and Amaro Liqueur. You can also find Blackfish Restaurant’s Crush Pad Food Truck where you can buy lobster rolls and burgers.

Walk-in visitors can enjoy a tasting of a flight of 5 wines. Groups can reserve tables for a more relaxed and scenic experience.

Spread out over 68 acres of vineyards and orchards, Nashoba Valley Winery is Massachusetts’s leading fruit wine producer and the nation’s pioneering “winery orchard.”

They offer over 30 different types of wines, including 14 traditional vintages made from grapes.

Apple and peach picking on their orchard are also available depending on the season; apple-picking season runs from late August to early November, while peach-picking season runs from late June to mid-September.

The New Hampshire wine industry is young compared to other wineries in the country and even other New England wineries. Many of New Hampshire’s vines were planted in the 1990s.

Located within the 5-star RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain, Seven Birches Winery hand-crafts wines using European grape varietals and locally sourced fruits.

They offer a variety of tasting experiences. They have a Meet the Winemaker Tour on Wednesday and Saturday afternoons and tour with the pros on Sunday afternoons. They include a full flight of wine samples.

Or you can walk in any other afternoon and taste 5 of their wines.

LaBelle Winery grows six grape varietals grown in their vineyard. They also use grapes from New York and Washington State and other New Hampshire-grown fruits to produce their award-winning wines.

Their flagship location is in Amherst, which is also where their wines are made and bottled. They have another newly opened vineyard in Derry and a winery in Portsmouth at the heart of historic Market Square.

The winery at Amherst is also home to The Bistro restaurant and is a popular wedding and events venue.

10. Newport Vineyards – Middletown, RI

Family-owned and operated Newport Vineyards is situated on over 100 acres of historically preserved farmland in Aquidneck Island, over 50 acres of which are vines.

The grounds are also home to the Brix Restaurant, Taproot Brewing Co., a café, and a marketplace.

Picnics are not allowed, and traditional wine tastings aren’t currently offered. However, you can make reservations to be seated at their indoor winery/brewery, covered vineyard porch, outdoor brewery lawn, or tank room patio, where you can enjoy wine and beer tasting flights.

11. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard – Little Compton, RI

Founded over forty years ago and spread over 160 acres of land, Sakonnet Vineyard is the oldest and one of the biggest New England wineries. They produce whites, reds, rosés, and dessert wines.

Traditional tastings and tours aren’t currently offered, but they do offer tasting flights plus grab and go food that you can enjoy on the grounds. There are picnic tables and Adirondack tables and chairs available, and you can also bring your own blankets and chairs.

But more and more vineyards have been cropping up throughout Vermont, with their products being sold all throughout the state and winning acclaim and awards. It’s safe to say that the Vermont wine industry is steadily growing and will be around for years to come.

12. Snow Farm Vineyard and Winery – South Hero, VT

Opened in 1997, Snow Farm Vineyard is Vermont’s first grape vineyard and winery. Being on an island in the middle of Lake Champlain enables their vineyard to grow vinifera grapes that thrive in cooler climates.

They offer wine tastings for walk-in visitors with flights of 4 or 8 wines. You can enjoy these flights on their patio, with views of the mountains as well as the vineyard. Or you can head out to the lawn during the summer months and have a picnic.

They don’t hold guided tours of their vineyards, but you’re free to walk around on a self-guided tour.

Winemaking in New England is an innovative field, producing award-winning wines from hybrid and native grapes, locally grown berries and even rhubarb! These 10 wineries and vineyards welcome visitors year-round with tastings, tours and special events that vary by the season. Be sure to call ahead to see what's on tap before you visit.

Averill House Vineyard - Brookline, New Hampshire

Averill House Vineyard is a family-run business in New Hampshire's historic ice district of Brookline, once a major ice distributor before refrigeration. Surrounded by tall pines, Averill House Vineyard boasts two acres of more than 500 vines and 11 grape varietals. Enjoy a glass on the patio or at one of the bistro tables set amidst the rows of vines. The vineyard hosts farmers markets and tours throughout the year.

Carolyn's Sakonnet Vineyard - Little Compton, Rhode Island

Founded in 1975, Carolyn's Sakonnet Vineyard , a 150-acre property, produces wines from only its estate-grown grapes, which are hand-picked and barrel-aged in French, Hungarian, Russian and American oak barrels. Situated between two waterways, the soil at this vineyard is mineral-rich, producing wines with low sugar levels and high acidity. Choose from whites, reds, rosés and dessert wines.

Chamard Vineyards - Clinton, Connecticut

Come for a wine tasting and stay for dinner in Chamard Vineyards' bistro, which also serves lunch and weekend brunch. Open since 1983, the 40-acre farm has 20 acres of established vines, yielding cabernet franc, cabernet sauvignon, chardonnay, merlot and pinot noir grapes. The vineyard is only two miles north of a lovely coastal drive along the northern edge of Long Island Sound.

Eighteen Twenty Wines - Portland, Maine

This small winery is off the beaten path in Portland’s southeast industrial zone – now home to several boutique businesses and artist studios. But Eighteen Twenty Wines ' location is not the most unusual thing about it. This is a rhubarb winery. Yes, rhubarb wine, which, as it turns out, is quite complex. Why rhubarb? It grows well in Maine, and Portland loves to keep it local. Make a day of it by exploring the nearby breweries and art galleries.

Hermit Woods Winery & Eatery - Meredith, New Hampshire

Founded in 2011, Hermit Woods has taken fruit winemaking from a cottage industry to a nationally recognized industry. Yet, nothing feels industrial about this Lakes Region winery, which serves up fruit wines, meads and ciders produced with mostly local and organic ingredients. Try wines in the tasting room bar or relax with a glass in The Loft, where musicians from around the world have been known to play. The eatery offers cheese and charcuterie boards and other savory plates.

Newport Vineyards - Middletown, Rhode Island

Newport Vineyards , on Aquidneck Island, makes for a wonderful day out. The 100-plus-acre vineyard is family-owned and operated by brothers John Jr. and Paul Nunes. Not a wine drinker? Not a problem. Enjoy a farm-to-table menu or a craft beer at Taproot Brewing , also located on-site. Newport Vineyards offers private tours and special events throughout the year.

Putney Mountain Winery & Spirits - Putney, Vermont

Putney Village, in the Greater Brattleboro area in southern Vermont, is home to Putney Mountain Winery and Spirits , which produces wines, liqueurs and sparkling ciders made from locally sourced berries, apples, pears, rhubarb and ginger. Not only does Putney Mountain source locally – this winery is 100% solar-powered and observes other environmentally friendly practices, such as recycling all waste and composting leavings from the winemaking process. There is a second tasting room inside the Cabot Cheese Store in Quechee Gorge Village, an hour’s drive north on Interstate 91.

Saltwater Farm Vineyard - Stonington, Connecticut

Saltwater Farm Vineyard gets special recognition for the most imaginative, adaptive repurposing. The property, formerly a WWII-era private airport, is living a second life as a French-style winemaking facility. Saltwater Farm concentrates on small-batch production of estate-barreled wines, aged in both steel and French oak. Enjoy wines by the glass or bottle inside the former airplane hangar that overlooks the vineyard and “grand allée,” formerly the landing strip. Depending on the season, the vineyard hosts an evolving lineup of live music, food trucks and wine dinners.

Truro Vineyards - Truro, Massachusetts

Cape wines are a funky bunch with individual charms, and the offerings at Truro Vineyards do not disappoint. Enjoy wine tastings on the patio during warmer weather and inside the adjacent tasting room during colder months. The shop is a delight, packed with wines and useful (and sometimes equally cute) gifts. Those in the mood for cocktail hour will be happy to find South Hollow Spirits distillery on-site.

Westport Rivers Winery - Westport, Massachusetts

Set on beautiful farmland in the quiet coastal town of Westport, some 70 miles due south of Boston, Westport Rivers Winery and its 80-acre sustainable vineyard first gained recognition for its sparkling white wine, a delicious brut to give any Champagne a run for its money. The Mayflower Special Club Rosé is another magnificent sparkler, with fragrant notes of orange marmalade, toast, strawberry jam and bread dough. Enjoy a tasting in the bar or on the patio, stock up in the shop or attend one of the winery's special events, such as a hayride in the fall or a summer outdoor concert.

12 Best New England Vineyards and Wineries to Visit

The best New England wineries and vineyards are home to an eclectic mix of winegrowers. Some are owned by families with a long history of growing grapes, while others belong to first-generation wine lovers who find this craft to be not only a lucrative business but also a fulfilling way of life. Located in memorable settings, these vineyards and wineries offer a rich and sometimes surprising selection of wines.

We put together a list of what we feel are the best vineyards and wineries in New England . These wineries are spread over every state in the region, so you can find a few wineries no matter which part of New England you visit.  The first is a great stop on the Coastal Wine Trail in Southern New England, and we venture up to Owl's Head in Maine.

Please use this list as a starting point. There are many other wonderful wineries to discover throughout New England. Plan a wine-tasting journey that makes sense for you, but try to include a few of our suggested stops!

Newport Vineyards

The family-owned Newport Vineyards promise to bring the Napa Valley wine experience to New England. They deliver with a thoughtfully laid out tasting room that features a large tasting bar and features an indoor-outdoor feel during the warm months.

Planted in the late 1970s in a unique micro-climate on the Aquidneck Island, today this vineyard extends over 75 acres of preserved farmland, which makes it the largest grower of wine grapes in the region. Much of that land used to be planted with potatoes used by Frito-Lay for chips. 

The long and cool growing season enables the winemakers here to develop some of the most complex flavors that you can find in any New England wines. The Newport Vineyards include the Nunes and Perry Farm and the Brix Restaurant, which offers pleasant views over the vineyards.

As with most cool climate growing regions, the white wines in Rhode Island tend to outshine the reds. This is no knock on the winemaker, but a simple fact of geography. At Newport Vineyards we really enjoyed the Riesling and the un-oaked Chardonnay.

You generally don’t need a reservation to take the 30-minute tour through the heart of the vineyards and stop by the tasting room.

Truro Vineyards

Truro Vineyards occupy an estate that is nearly two centuries old, and they are perched on the sandy soil between Cape Cod Bay and the Atlantic Ocean, in the ruggedly beautiful town of Truro. This is the only vinifera vineyard in the region, growing Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Franc. That makes it a must visit Cape Cod winery. 

In addition to featuring pavilion and beach wine tastings, Truro Vineyards also house the Blackfish Restaurant’s Crush Pad Food Truck. A visit to this vineyard is likely to bring you into contact with the Roberts family, the hands-on owners who run wine tastings and guide visitors. Tastings and free tours are available daily.

Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard

Founded over forty years ago, the Sakonnet Vineyard spreads over 150 acres of land and produces barrel-aged white, red, rosé, and dessert wine. Located between two waterways, this vineyard is refreshed by salty breezes and rolling fog.

The slowly-developing grapes grown here are known for their freshness and deep flavor. Carolyn’s Sakonnet Vineyard offers daily afternoon tastings that feature samples of seven estate wines, including sparkling white wine, juicy rosé, and the award-winning, fruity blend of the NV Rhode Island Red. On the estate, you’ll also find the delicious Vineyard Bistro.

There is a lovely tasting room with plenty of room to spread out on the lawn in front during the warmer months. Find a nice wooden chair and bring your bottle of chilled Rosé with you. This is a perfect way to spend a sunny New England day.

Jonathan Edwards Winery

The Jonathan Edwards Winery grows grapes not only in New England but also in the Napa Valley on the West Coast. While grapes are being harvested from this vineyard, the harvest brought in from the Napa Valley is fermented, aged, and bottled here. The winery stretches over 20 acres of vineyards and offers one of the most authentic vineyard experiences in New England.

Located on the former Chester Maine Farm in North Stonington, Connecticu t, this vineyard preserves the historic farmhouse and the fertile fields where cattle were raised centuries ago. A family-run vineyard and winery, the Jonathan Edwards Winery offers tastings and tours every day of the week.

The catalog of wines includes the 2017 Estate Chardonnay, 2016 Napa Cabernet Sauvignon, and the inky dark Petite Sirah.

Maugle Sierra Vineyards

Another highlight vineyard on the Coastal Wine Trail , the Maugle Sierra has been producing premium, locally-grown, hand-crafted wines since 2002. Using the coastal micro-climate to impart rich flavors to the wine, this vineyard covers 11 acres and offers visitors a wine patio, outdoor tasting areas, and picnic spaces.

The catalog of wines includes the chewy, fruit-forward wines created by co-founder Dr. Maugle, including the Estate St. Croix Wine, alongside a dozen more wines. The beautiful Maugle Sierra Vineyards are open to visitors Thursday through Monday, as well as Friday from noon until evening.

Seven Birches Winery

Located within the 5-star Riverwalk Resort at Loon Mountain in New Hampshire, the Seven Birches Winery blends famed European grape varietals with locally sourced fruits to create wines with a distinctive fruity flavor. This winery captures the New Hampshire spirit and provides a rich experience for wine lovers.

If you arrive on a Wednesday or Saturday, you can go on an informative Meet the Winemakers tour that showcases the winemaking process at Seven Birches. The winery offers two tasting rooms located within close proximity of each other, both of them highlighting the Seven Birches’ RiverWalk label, made and bottled in the White Mountains.

Overall, Seven Birches provide a memorable tasting experience for both connoisseurs and people who are only beginning their journey of discovery into the startlingly rich world of New England wines.

Boyden Valley Winery

The Boyden Valley Winery carries on into the 21 st century the rich tradition of one of the first wineries in Vermont. Located on a fourth-generation family farm tucked beneath the Green Mountains, the winery is well-known for its cold-weather varieties. The highlight wine is the Marquette Reserve, made entirely from Vermont grapes aged in French and Hungarian oak barrels.

A wine tour at this winery includes a visit to the recently renovated tank and barrel room, offering you the chance to taste a dozen different wines in an authentic carriage barn. Tastings are available Tuesdays to Saturdays and allow you to sample up to seven wines.

Lincoln Peak Vineyard Winery

This 12-acre vineyard was initially a strawberry farm. But the rising popularity of winter-hardy grape varieties in the early 2000s caught on here, and the family who owns the estate – the Granstroms – never looked back.

The vineyard today produces around 25,000 bottles of locally grown grapes every year and has been a notable participant in cold-climate wine competitions. In 2016, the Lincoln Peak Vineyard Winery was named Winery of the Year at the International Cold Climate Competition. Highlight wines are made from Marquette, Frontenac, and Le Crescent grape varieties.

The Granstroms’ winery captures the spirit of the new generation of winemakers in Vermont, and it is one of the most memorable wineries in New England .

Cellardoor Winery & Vineyard

If you thought Maine is too cold to produce a distinctive wine, think again. Visiting the Cellardoor Winery & Vineyard in Lincolnville, Maine is a noteworthy experience for every wine lover. Open to visitors daily, the 200-year-old barn that hosts tastings is the perfect setting for the rich catalog of wines available.

Comparatively small in size, this vineyard produces a variety of hand-crafted wines from cold-hardy hybrids. While visiting this winery, you’ll have the opportunity to see the fabled hand carving behind the Cellardoor logo and learn the interesting story behind it.

Tasting highlights include the estate vintages, Blanc de Blancs and Vendange, which are produced using traditional methods of fermentation.

Breakwater Vineyards

Big wineries have their appeal, but so do small farm wineries like Breakwater Vineyards. Located in Owls Head, Maine, this charming winery produces Riesling, Cabernet Sauvignon, and popular fruit wines, such as the Breakwater Blues with blueberries.

The beautiful scenery and quiet surroundings make this vineyard a restful place for sipping a glass of wine on a bright summer day. Adding to the appeal of the vineyards are the goats and other animals roaming through the grounds of the estate, with Pinot Noir, the lead goat, at their head. Wine tastings and tours at the Breakwater Vineyards are available only in summer.

Westport Rivers

The home of an old family of local winegrowers, Westport Rivers is a key stop for many wine lovers exploring the best Massachusetts wineries along the Coastal Wine Trail . The vineyard’s rich and dark soils, together with the cool climate tempered by the gulf stream, help to produce the highly aromatic and crisp wine that helped Westport Rivers build a good reputation.

Wine tastings at this vineyard include highlights such as the Methode Champenoise sparkling wine, as well as a selection of apéritif wine and table wine. You can visit Westport Rivers Monday through Saturday, enjoying the wine at the Wine Bar or outside in classic vineyard surroundings.

Nashoba Valley Winery

Nashoba Valley Winery produces over 37 varietals of wine using fruits grown entirely in the USA. A pioneering winery orchard, Nashoba Valley spreads over 52 acres and features a state-of-the-art winemaking facility, a winery, and a gourmet restaurant.

This beautiful hilltop orchard has as its center point a rustic farmhouse that hosts the popular J’s Restaurant. But if you arrive at this winery on a sunny day, you can take a bottle of wine to the picnic area and enjoy it with friends and family.

Seven Birches Winery has 2 distinct locations to explore and enjoy our locally hand-crafted wines within walking distance of each other in downtown Lincoln, NH.  Our winery facility and Winery Tasting Room are located within the grand new RiverWalk Resort hotel.  Our Rhythm Studio is located nearby in the Lincoln Village Shops.  All of the wine is produced at the RiverWalk Resort location, and both locations offer a unique craft wine & cider experience.

Seven Birches Winery is handcrafting classic European grape varietals and locally sourced fruits into distinctive wines that match a broad array of palates.  All of our wines are produced on site in the grand new RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain.  The wine is made from whole fruits, fermented, aged, and bottled, right here in the White Mountains of Lincoln, NH.

On Wednesdays and Saturdays, join us for an informal  Meet the Winemakers’ winery tour.  With one of our winemakers, you’ll take a deep dive (pun intended) into how all of our wines are made and get the opportunity to sample some special wines.

In 2016, Seven Birches Winery moved to the grand new RiverWalk Resort at Loon Mountain .  Our production facility and tasting rooms (open daily) have both moved to Lincoln, NH.  Join us for a wine tasting , “ Meet the Winemaker Tour “, or just a pleasant afternoon at the resort.  In 2018, we opened our  Rhythm Studio in the Lincoln Village Shops to offer another unique way to enjoy all the wines made nearby.  We also now produce a special line of craft ciders, under the brand, Rhythm Cider.  Check it out!

Whether you are a studied sommelier, a collector with your own wine cellar, or someone who simply enjoys a glass of their favorite wine with dinner, there’s no doubt the world of wine is a fascinating one to explore.  At Oak & Grain , the Inn at Pleasant Lake’s farm-to-table restaurant, we share our unique perspective with the explorers of this world.  We are curious to discover the roots of our food and wine, striving to understand what makes it special, and how it stands out from the myriad of choices people have these days.  We love our history and believe that knowing the context of origins provides not only authenticity, but insights into how best to enjoy the flavors we experience.

The same is true of our approach to wine.  Each month our team gathers to scour our wine list looking for any gaps in the continuity of our offerings.  We taste and learn about new wines in depth, their origins, and what produces their unique flavors.  When a wine is selected, we then invite our guests enjoy these flavors by making them more accessible, offering opportunities to try new wines through pairings, by-the-glass specials, and featured wines of the week.

Wine-Themed Getaway Package

Our Wine and Dine Package offers a unique farm-to-table experience focused on wine.  From tastings and tours at local New England vineyards, to enjoying our weekly featured wine with artisan cheeses in the comfort of your elegant room, to exploring our Chef’s Suggested Wine Pairings with your 5-course gourmet dining experience, we don’t just look at what makes a certain wine special, we consider how best to savor it.

Wine Pairings at Oak & Grain

We offer Chef Suggested Wine Pairings to complement dinner on any night. Three courses are paired, generally with wines that we typically do not carry by-the-glass, to give guests the opportunity to sample some special varietals.

Wednesday is Wine Night!

Weekly Featured Wine – each Wednesday, a select wine from our wine cellar will be featured for the evening to provide guests with the opportunity to learn more in depth about a new wine. A Tale of Two Terroirs Tasting and Lunch

Join us this English Wine Week as we explore our Kent and Sussex terroirs. You’ll enjoy a guided tour of our Kent vineyards before we sit down to a side-by-side tasting of our Kent and Sussex wines. Wine culture can sometimes seem elitist, which begs the question, how can it become more approachable? One answer is by boarding the tricked-out, mint green school bus called Freddie . Owned by The Savory Lane , the experience offers four kinds of tours, from full-day excursions to special events and seasonal events.

As co-owners and sisters, Lisa Galloni hosts, while Maria Czyzewski drives Freddie. Their mom, Pat, is involved with food preparation and bus decoration, while Czyzewski's daughter, Ava, handles the social media.

You may be wondering where the bus's namesake comes from.

"So, Freddie is our bus. Our grandmother, her nickname is Freddy. And she was the first woman in our family to own her own business. Our goal is to bring people to these locations and to help support their businesses," Galloni said.

With a hope that visitors will gather, journey, and dine (and maybe join in on a little karaoke), the venture is sure to make wine tastings and vineyard tours a great time for those on all different levels of wine knowledge.

Sparkling vintages, vineyard tours and tasting festivals: how to experience English wine this year

Savour the best of English wine with new festivals and vineyard experiences.

There was a time, not so long ago really, when English oenophiles looking to set up shop had no choice but to relocate to the balmier climes of France or Italy. Not anymore. A changing climate, a culture of experimentation and greater awareness of which regions are best suited to grape growing have combined to make England one of Europe’s most exciting viticultural destinations — and it shows. 2024 looks to be something of a vintage year for English wine, with a host of new tours and tastings set to showcase some of the nation’s best homegrown producers. Put away that Eurostar ticket; sun-dappled vineyards are closer than you think.

Vine excursions

Minerva Wines was born in 2015 after local farmer Emma Rice was inspired by a trip to Beaune — which lies at the centre of Burgundy’s winemaking region — to plant some 10,000 vines at Corston Fields Farm in Somerset. A grape’s toss from Bath’s Georgian crescents and Roman pools, the vineyard is launching new experiences this April: visitors are invited to join supper clubs, partake in vine-side tastings of sparkling vintages and venture out on grape-picking excursions. It’s even possible to spend the night in one of the winery’s shepherd’s huts, which look out over rows of vines.  

Wine & dine

The barley fields that blanket Norfolk have made the county a centre for beer and brewing, but it’s the region’s burgeoning wine industry that’s stealing the limelight this summer. Norwich Wine Week will see the medieval city host some of the region’s most important wine producers, including Flint, Burn Valley and Chet Valley vineyards. Events kick off on 14 June, ushering in a three-day festival that’ll showcase Norfolk’s food and music as well as its viticulture. Expect talks and tastings in award-winning restaurants and historical buildings throughout the city.

New vintage

Since 2015, Taittinger — the renowned French winemaking family and producers of Champagne — has been quietly planting Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and Pinot Meunier vines on the sunny, south-facing slopes around Selling Court Farm in Kent. The result is Domaine Evremond , the first UK vineyard established by a Grande Marque Champagne — one of France’s 24 ‘big-brand’ Champagne houses. The vineyard’s first batch of premium English sparkling wine will be available to try from September, after three years of ageing in the bottle, while a winery and visitor centre are set to open towards the end of 2024, with views out over the estate.
