The Best Venice Wine Tours to Try in 2024

best venice wine tours

Are you planning a trip to La Serenissima aka Venice? If you’re a wine lover, we have to tell you about an unmissable experience in the lagoon that we tried this month. Venice wine tours might not be the first thing that comes to mind – after all, they’re famous for the spritz – but wine has had an important place on the island for centuries.

Table of Contents

In fact, it might surprise you to know that St Mark’s Square was full of vineyards until the 11th century! Keep reading to find out our favorite wine tours in Venice Italy and why we think you should join one.

What is the story of winemaking in Venice?

On a recent food tour in Venice, we learned that once upon a time, all of the city’s ‘ campi ‘ or ‘ piazze ‘ aka (town squares) were full of fruit and vegetable gardens along with wine grapes. The wine grapes included varieties like Malvasia, Raboso, Tocai Friulano, Incrocio Manzoni, Refosco, Verduzzo Trevigiano, Pinot, Cabernet, Merlot and Chardonnay to name just a few.

The vineyards were nearly destroyed and indigenous grape varieties were nearly lost to history until a special project between the University of Padua and the Consorzio of Venetian Wines set up a project to try and reclaim them. The next time you get off the train at Venice’s Santa Lucia Station, wander to the vineyard of the convent of the Discalced Carmelites (Giardino dei cinque sensi). Squirrelled away within the Convent’s silent walls, they have replanted vines at risk of extinction!

If you’re curious to learn more about the story of the vineyard from the 1600s, you can read about it here .

What kind of wine do they make in Venice?

Did you know that Veneto (the region) has the highest number of native grapes in all of Italy? It is also Italy’s biggest producer of wine thanks to the glera grape used to make prosecco .

In times bygone, a classic Venetian wine was known as ‘ vin moro ‘ thanks to its dark color. It was tangy and astringent and popular to put on ships because it didn’t spoil. With a high alcohol content of 14%, it was designed to be drunk cold. Today we know this wine as ‘ Raboso ‘ or ‘ Friularo ‘ and it is grown in the lagoon and surrounding countryside. Some of the grapes still grown in the Lagoon today include:

  • Bianchetta trevigiana
  • Verduzzo trevigiano

Our favorite Venice Wine Tour in 2024

This year we were thrilled to join a Venice vineyard tour and finally visit Venissa – one of our bucket list vineyards in the Venetian lagoon. Whilst not actually on Venice itself, this vineyard is just a boat ride away on the island ‘Mazzorbo’.

If you’re interested in wine even just casually, you will be so impressed with the tasting experience and storytelling here. Forget another boring visit to see the barrels – it is all about the history of wine on the island and told in a really engaging way.

Indigenous dorona grapes  were grown on the island for as long as at least the 13th century until 1966 when a massive high tide destroyed all of the vineyards and the grapes were sadly declared extinct. In 2001, the owner of Venissa (also a Michelin restaurant and small hotel) rediscovered the vines and embarked on an enormous project to replant the vineyard and get the grapes re-certified by Italy’s wine governing bodies.

venice vineyard tours

Honestly, drinking the wine from Venissa was an unforgettable experience because we learned about just how difficult it is to grow and make wine in the lagoon. It’s essentially like growing a vineyard at the beach as the vines are surrounded by salty water and soil. There’s barely any room for the roots of the plants and the vines barely survive. You can imagine then what a small, boutique production this is!

We loved that the wine was essentially a piece of art and Venetian culture as the glass bottles are all made in Murano (famed for glass) and the labels are 24 carrot leaf gold handmade by the last goldsmith in Venice.

This Venice wine tour from Take Walks is wonderful as they organise a private boat to take you to the winery and then back to Venice – but not only! As a bonus, the tour includes a stop on the islands of nearby Murano and Burano. Burano is a must-see for their vibrantly painted houses, whilst in Murano you get to see a private glassblowing demonstration in a beautiful restored church.

2 More Favorite Venice Wine Tasting Tours

Here’s our 101 breakdown of the best dry Italian white wine to try! It’s not an exhaustive list, but a selection of Italian white wines that we think you will enjoy.

1. Venice Food & Wine Walking Tour

Prefer to stay on Venice itself and learn more about the food too? We love this evening tour at sunset to do as the Venetians do and indulge in cicchetti, spritz and wine.

During this 3 hour tour, you get to stop at 5 bacari (Venetian wine bars) where you’ll try some cicchetti (Venetian canapes or bites) paired with local wine, locally produced prosecco, and a traditional Venetian aperitif – made with Select not Aperol (trust us, it’s a 100 times better).

This is an excellent activity to join if it’s your first time in Venice or on your first evening so you can discover some favourite bacari to return to throughout your stay.

2. Prosecco wine tour from Venice

If you’re looking for a wonderful wine tour from Venice, why not head to the nearby hills of Valdobbiadene and learn about its most famous export, Prosecco!

Winemaking is about as old as time itself in these hills and you’ll have the opportunity to try the best of the best when it comes to Prosecco on this tour. You’ll have your first taste of Prosecco DOCG at a local Osteria with incredible views over the countryside, before visiting a winery in Valdobbiadene, where you’ll try at least 4 different Prosecco wines paired with typical local products like cheese and cold cuts.

Are you inspired to join some Venice Italy wine tours on your next trip? Let us know in the comments if you have tried any of these experiences! Or why not learn more about the Veneto wine region in our online guide.

Just north of the ancient city on the water, Venice’s Veneto region is famous for its wonderfully bubbly and light white wine–Prosecco.

Have you ever tried it?

It’s light and airy. It’s sweet, but not too sweet. It’s perfect to pair with fish and seafood dishes or can be refreshing all on its own as your choice glass for  aperitivo .

You can easily take several Veneto wine tours from Venice, from full-day Prosecco vineyard tours to half-day experiences.

And although most of these are Prosecco wine tours from Venice, there are a few other wines in the region; I think you’ll also be excited to try.

On the day of the tour, Chiara picked us up in Venice right on time, and drove for 1 hour to reach the destination. To our pleasant surprise, Chiara is a sommelier herself and she specializes in Venetian wine! She is very knowledgeable and explained all the history and background about Prececco wine making. Therefore before we reached the winery, we have learned general ideas about Procecco. During the tour, we visited 1 winery and tried 4 amazing varieties of Procecco wine. A guide from the winery led the winery tour and tasting (around 1.5 – 2 hours). The tour is very educational with a lot of interactive Q&A. For lunch, we went to a restaurant with amazing food and breathtaking view – and we tried 2 more Procecco wine from a different area. After the tour, we would never drink Procecco in the same way again! Overall, this is an excellent experience and I would definitely recommend it.” –Viator traveler (Half-Day Prosecco Tour with a Certified Sommelier review )

“This was an excellent tour from Venice. It took a little over an hour to get to the winery. Met the owner of the winery and then took a tour of their process ending with a wine tasting of their wines. We then proceeded to Verona where we had several hours to have lunch and visit a few of Verona’s sites. Our tour guide was excellent and very personable. We spend 2 weeks in Europe and this was one of the highlights of our trip. I highly recommend this tour if you are interested in wine.” –Viator traveler (Valpolicella Day Trip from Venice: Wine Tasting and Verona Review )

One of my favorite Venice insider tips is planning out your meals to include  cicchetti –and this cicchetti & wine tour makes it easy to do just that.

Insider Tip :  Cicchetti  are small, traditional Venetian appetizers that can be eaten at any time of day. They’re an excellent snack or midday meal, prepared with little rounds of Italian bread and topped with baccalà, gorgonzola, porchetta, and other delights. You can learn more about cicchetti in my guide on things to know when visiting Venice .

On this Venice food & wine tour, you’ll explore the city with a local guide and taste some excellent wines and several of Venice’s most famous neighborhoods and landmarks.

The Rialto Bridge and fish market and the Cannaregio district are just a few sites.

As you go, you’ll taste different types of Cicchetti in traditional Venetian bars, called  bacaro , while also sampling several wines that come from the Veneto region.

“We did this tour on our first night in Venice. It was so much fun. [Our tour guide] took us on a quick little tour of the neighborhood before our first stop, so we got to learn a little about the area. She was really knowledgeable about the food and wine on the tour. It was really nice to be able to visit some places we probably wouldn’t have seen otherwise. We learned a lot and the food was delicious.” –Viator traveler (Venice Food and Drink Experience: Cicchetti and Wine Small-Group Tour review )

“Our wine tasting trip to Masi Winery and the trip to Verona from Venice was enchanting and surprising. We ended up having a private tour because no one else booked the tour. Our guide took us to Soave first and we climbed to the top of a medieval castle. Then we went to Lake Garda briefly and then to the winery for the tour and tasting. Then our guide took us to downtown Verona and dropped us off for two hours and we had lunch at a restaurant he recommended that was fabulous. I would highly recommend this tour.” –Viator traveler (Private Valpolicella Day Trip from Venice: Wine Tasting and Verona review )

Venice is obviously not a city of skyscrapers, so there are very few lookout points around the city.

On this 2.5-hour tour , you’ll have an incredible chance to see Venice from above with a licensed guide.

You’ll start in the San Polo district, where you’ll go inside private historic palaces to check out the view from their terraces.

From there, you’ll head into the streets and pass some of Venice’s most iconic landmarks like the Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge, and Piazza San Marco while enjoying aperitivo and a Prosecco tasting along the way.

“It felt like a private tour as it was just my mother, my sister and myself! Both [guides were] friendly and charming people who spoke excellent English and who looked after us very well. We were driven in comfort in a large air-conditioned vehicle. In Venice we had time to walk in some quieter areas away from the crowds and we even got in a boat to make a brief crossing. For lunch, we had a wonderful typically Italian three-course meal in a quality restaurant. Afterwards, we were free to have some time to shop and look around on our own around the San Marco square area. A very enjoyable day – thank you!” –Viator traveler (Venice Rooftops Tour with Wine Tasting Review )

“Easily the best meal we’ve had in Venice so far. You won’t see food the same way again. So delicious! The Sommelier is simply amazing and his recommendations for pairing are the best. We will be coming back for sure and you should book this 100%!! (Note: you don’t have to “dress up” even though it’s an elegant restaurant. Many people came in business casual attire and even casual attire, so no worries on attire if that is one of your concerns.)” –Getyourguide traveler (Four-course Food & Wine Pairing Elegant Dinner in Venice Review )

Venice Wine Tours: The History of Prosecco

venice italy wine tours

Prosecco originated in the town of Prosecco in northeast Italy, using the prosecco grape.

However, the grape was renamed in the early 21st century to  glera , and laws were passed to protect the drink’s authenticity.

And invented at the end of the 19th century, the Charmat method traps the carbon bubbles from leaving the wine, the signature of the delicious, light, sparkling wine we know and love.

Within the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions of Italy, only the provinces of Padova, Vicenza, Treviso , Venezia, Belluno, Pordenone, Udine, Gorizia, and Trieste have the privilege of producing Prosecco today.

The highest quality Prosecco is given the DOCG (Vino Denominazione di Origine Controllata e Garantita) distinction, along with all other protected Italian wines.

Specifically, the highest quality Prosecco is produced between two towns, Valdobbiadene and Conegliano, within the Treviso province.

Fun Fact:  Due to its importance for Prosecco wine, this area was established as a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2019.

DOC (Vino Denominazione di Origine Controllata) is the next step down, but rest assured you aren’t sacrificing anything by drinking a DOC-deemed wine.

Everything from location and farming to the aging process and grape varietal is held to high standards at both levels.

Differences between Champagne and Prosecco

venice italy wine tours

Similar to how Champagne can only come from the Champagne region in France, Prosecco is only authentic if it comes from one of nine provinces within the Veneto and Friuli-Venezia Giulia regions.

However, this is where the similarities between the two beverages end. Although they seemingly look the same, their path from the rolling vineyards to your glass is very different.

Champagne is made with the Champagne method, where carbonization occurs in its bottles.

Prosecco is processed using the Charmat method, which uses steel tanks to trap carbon bubbles from escaping during the fermentation process.

Insider Tip : If you want to learn about the drinking laws in Italy , as well as recommendations on other wines and liqueurs you should try on your trip, take a look at my guide.

Wine Tasting in Venice: 9 Places You Have to Try

Prosecco in Venice

There are always certain things that spring to mind when you think of Venice. This historic Italian city is synonymous with superb architecture, canals, and gondolas. What you might not know, but are about to find out, is that this city is also where you can have some of the best wine-tasting experiences in Europe.

If one of the things you like to do when you're on vacation is trying the local wine, you're going to be lining up to get your hands on some of the wines, like prosecco and soave, from the Veneto region.

Prosecco and soave aren't the only wines that the Veneto region produces, there are many more besides those, and while they might not have the same global recognition, they're just as good on the palate, if not better.

There are multiple ways to go wine tasting in Venice. When you're looking for things to do at night in Venice , going on a wine tour or a Venice food tour with wine tasting included is a great way to pass the evening. The city also hosts several food and wine festivals throughout the year too, so they'll be something you won't want to miss if you're here at the right time.

It really isn't the done thing to go to wine tastings carrying your luggage. If you've somehow managed to get stuck with your bags, there's no need to cancel your wine tasting tour. Just store your bags in one of the Bounce luggage lockers in Venice .

Bounce luggage storage facilities are one-hundred percent secure as all Bounce lockers are security tagged and fully insured. Drop your stuff off, and you'll have both hands free, ready to make the most of your sipping session. By the way, swilling and spitting the wine out isn't recommended. Venetian wine is made to drink, but don't have too much, or you will be drunk in no time. It can be pretty heady stuff, as you may well find out the morning after you've taken a wine tour.

Wine and food tours in Venice

Where In Venice Can You Go Wine Tasting?

You may be totally surprised with all the places you can go wine tasting in Venice. You don't need to go on a winery tour through a countryside full of rolling vineyards to go wine tasting, but it'll be a great experience if you do.

When you don't want to leave the city, then wine-related food tours, which include some of the city's culinary history, or walking tours that visit a historic winery are good options. Better still, do it the Venetian way by going to a bacaro, a small local bar, where they serve wine by the glass with tapas-style snacks. You can also head for one of the city's wineries, where there'll be a specialist on hand to tell you all about the denomination you're supping.

Whether you take a small group tour, prefer a private tour, or go it alone to a bacaro, you know you'll be sloshing back some of the best wines the Veneto region of northeast Italy offers.

The Best Bacaro In Venice

Bacaro are the lifeblood of Venetian hospitality. Folks drop in to these small bars for a quick glass of wine, a cicchetti, and a chat with friends. If you haven't been to a bacaro, then you haven't been to Venice. Never worry about the quality of wine you'll be served at a bacaro. When the locals are drinking it, you know it's good.

Here are three bacaro you must go to when you're in Venice:

Cantina do Spade

The Cantina do Spade is a beautifully rustic taverna-style bar with an authentic Italian atmosphere. There's no mistaking what they do at the Cantina do Spade as there are two enormous wine barrels, empty of course, standing by the door.

Go in, and straightaway you'll spy the huge and very tempting, countertop display of cicchetti, small bite-size snacks, ready and waiting to be consumed. Here they serve a large variety of local wines by the glass and by the bottle for very reasonable prices.

Location – San Polo, 859

Wine tasting in Venice

Taverna Al Remer

When you want to drink wine al fresco at sunset on a terrace overlooking the Grand Canal, you need to be at the Taverna Al Remer. This taverna's interior is as attractive as its terrace and is finished with an old-world décor of bare brick arches and a beamed wooden ceiling. Here you'll be introduced to the wine list by the chef-owner who likes nothing better than to assist his customers with their wine tastings just to ensure they choose the right wine to go with his superb tuna carpaccio.

Location – Cannaregio, 5701

Bar all'arco.

When you're sightseeing around the Rialto Bridge area of Venice and you fancy a quick sip, head straight for the Bar All'Arco. While this bacaro is in one of the main tourist areas, they only charge local prices which in itself is refreshing. This bar has more tables on the sidewalk than it does inside, where it's pretty much standing room only. The friendly bar and waiting staff are in the know about all the local wines they serve so don't be shy about testing their knowledge. Guaranteed they recommend a cicchetti of prawns and parma ham with a glass of chilled prosecco.

Location - Sestiere Sao Paulo, 436

Venice tours, wine walking tours of venice.

Even if you're a very independent wine connoisseur it can be good to go wine tasting on an organized walking tour led by a local guide who knows the Veneto plonk inside out. The majority of walking tours or a Venice food tour with wine tasting included last for around two hours.

Two hours might not seem very long initially, but it is time enough to visit six different wine bars and try six totally different wines from the region. Visiting six bars one after the other can make a walking tour start to sound a little like a wine crawl; it's not and is definitely more sophisticated than knocking back shots on a pub crawl.

The good thing about walking tours is any adverse effects you might have from imbibing will wear off as you go from bar to bar. It also gives you time to properly cleanse your palate so you can fully appreciate the distinctive notes of each wine.

Venice Food Tours

Take just about any Venice food tour, and there'll be a wine tasting included on it somewhere. Wine is as much a part of the gastronomy of Venice as any dish, including the traditional sweet and sour sardines.

One of the main spots local experts like to visit on a Venice food tour is the city's famous Rialto Market. The market is a six-day-a-week event that takes place near where the Rialto Bridge spans the Grand Canal. Among the stalls of produce, you'll see wine merchants displaying their wines and be invited to taste some, even though it's before midday, in the hope you'll buy some.

There are also Venetian food and wine tours that take place at night, but they don't include a market visit as the Italian stallholders close down at midday. A popular place for nighttime Venice tours is the Old Ghetto, the Jewish quarter, which adds an interesting historic twist to wine tasting.

Venice wine bars

Venice Wine Bus Tours

If you're interested in winemaking as well as wine tasting, then you'll certainly want to take one of the many bus tours out of the city to see the vineyards.

Full Day Trips

When you have a full day you can dedicate to your love of wine and winemaking, then taking a bus tour out to the Valpolicella wine region from Venice is a must. Some of Italy's most famous wines come from the vineyards in Valpolicella. It's also a part of Italy with the most stunningly beautiful landscapes imaginable.

During your day out, you'll stop off at a wine-making specialist like the Corte Fornaledo winery, where they produce a red wine unique to the area, or Corte San Mattia, which produces Amarone, a dry red with a high alcohol level that will really hit the spot

Prosecco Wine Tours

If prosecco wine is your favorite tipple, as it is for many these days, then you'll almost certainly want to go on a prosecco wine tasting tour at some point during your stay in Venice.

To get to the roots of the prosecco wine-producing industry will mean going outside of Venice and into the surrounding countryside. Most wine tours of this kind leave the city in the morning to head to the hills where the vines are growing.

The main prosecco growing area is in the verdant valleys between Conegliano and Valdobbiadene , now a UNESCO World Heritage Site, which is around an hour's drive north of Venice.

If you're under the illusion that prosecco wine comes from the Italian town of the same name, you'd be wrong. While the wine is named after the town, it was actually first produced way back in the 1600s in the city of Trieste.

Trieste is a port city closer to the border with Slovenia than it is to Rome and Prosecco, a small town ten minutes drive north of Trieste. The reason that name was chosen for the wine is something that's disappeared in the mists of time, but fair play to the medieval winemakers as it was a good choice.

If you thought you'd be sipping prosecco wine for breakfast, think again, but you will have a glass in hand by lunchtime at the latest.

A tour of the vineyards is usually followed by a tour of the winery that processes the grapes you've seen growing. You'll get to taste several proseccos and be fed a light lunch of traditional Venetian food which, if you didn't have a decent breakfast, you'll definitely need or you'll be snoozing all the way back to Venice.

Food and Wine Festivals

Venice food and wine festival.

The Venice Food and Wine Festival is a major gastronomical event hosted by the luxury hotel chain JW Marriott once a year. If you're looking to partake in a sophisticated wine tasting, then this is the event for you.

The festival takes place at the resort on the Isola Delle Rose di Laguna , a tiny islet off the coast of Venice. It's an indulgence of wine tasting sponsored by the top producers of the Veneto region accompanied by Michelin star quality cuisine. It's not the most economical of events to attend, but one that's worth it if you can afford it.

Prosecco Festivals

Vino en villa.

The Vino en Villa is an annual celebration of prosecco held outside of Venice in the 14th century Castello di San Salvatore in May. It's an out-and-out homage to the prosecco produced in the Conegliano-Valdobbiadene region with no other wine on show.

Entry to the castle is free and so are the majority of events and workshops. You do need to purchase a ticket to be able to sample the wines, but it costs less than a couple of drinks in a bar and you can try as many proseccos as you can handle.

Even if you only have three days in Venice , you'll have time to slip in at least a couple of wine tasting sessions or visit two or three bacaro. Try to be adventurous and not stick to just prosecco as many of the other wines produced in the Veneto region, while you might not recognize the name, are seriously good. You never know; you just might give up on your addiction to Italian fizzy plonk and discover you have a connoisseur’s palate or nose for something with a more refined bouquet.

Guide to Venice: Venice’s Wine History and Culture

Venice, Italy, is a city of timeless charm and has long been a destination of choice for travelers seeking a rich blend of history, culture, and classic gastronomy.

However, what many visitors may not realize is that wine has played an integral role in shaping the city’s unique identity, from its past as a bustling trading port to its present-day status as a wine lover’s paradise.

In its heyday, Venice was the heart of a vast maritime republic, its strategic position making it a key player in the trade routes of the Mediterranean. Ships would dock bearing an array of goods, but one of the most valuable commodities was, without a doubt, wine.

Vintages from across Italy and beyond were brought to Venice, where they were traded, consumed, and even used as diplomatic gifts. This influx of different wines not only enriched the city’s economy but also cultivated a discerning palate among the Venetians, laying the foundation for the vibrant wine culture we see today.

guide to venice - Your Perfect Guide to Venice, Italy: Visiting Venice - 2024 - 5

Modern-day Venice and Venice’s best wineries continues to celebrate this vinous heritage. You’ll find ‘bacari’, traditional Venetian wine bars, dotted throughout the city, their counters laden with ‘cicchetti’ – small snacks akin to Spanish tapas – designed to complement the local wines. Here, locals and tourists alike gather to enjoy a ‘ombra’ (a small glass of wine), fostering a sense of community and conviviality.

Venice’s wine scene is also characterized by its commitment to quality and tradition. The surrounding region of Veneto is home to some of Italy’s most prestigious wine appellations, including Prosecco, Valpolicella, and Soave. Venetian wine bars and restaurants take pride in showcasing these local wines, offering visitors a taste of the region’s diverse terroirs.

From its historic canals to its charming piazzas, every corner of Venice tells a story, and wine is a recurring character in these narratives. The city’s wine culture is not just about the drink itself, but also about the rituals, traditions, and connections it fosters. As you explore Venice, glass in hand, you’ll soon discover that wine is more than just a facet of the city’s history – it’s a way of life.

Guide to Venice: Best Wine Bars, Restaurants, & Shops in Venice

Venice is a city that sips as elegantly as it sails, with a wealth of wine bars, restaurants, and shops that pay homage to Italy’s rich viticultural heritage. Whether you’re a seasoned sommelier or a curious novice, these Venetian gems promise an unforgettable journey through the world of wine.

Guide to Venice: Wine Bars

No visit to Venice would be complete without a stop at Cantina Do Mori , the city’s oldest wine bar. Nestled in a narrow alleyway near the Rialto Market, this historic establishment has been serving wine since 1462. Step inside and you’ll find yourself surrounded by copper pots hanging from ancient wooden beams, creating an ambiance that transports you back in time. The wine selection is extensive, focusing on local and regional Italian wines. Don’t forget to try their ‘cicchetti’, traditional Venetian snacks that pair perfectly with a glass of wine.

Another must-visit is Al Prosecco , located in the vibrant Campo San Giacomo area. As the name suggests, this charming wine bar specializes in Prosecco, the sparkling wine that is a hallmark of the Veneto region. Here, you can sample a variety of Proseccos sourced from small producers, each with its own unique character and flavor profile.

Guide to Venice: Restaurants

For a dining experience that marries gastronomy and oenology, book a table at Osteria alle Testiere . This intimate restaurant has just nine tables, creating a cozy and welcoming atmosphere. The menu, which changes daily, showcases the freshest seafood from the nearby Rialto Market. But it’s the impressive wine list that truly sets Osteria alle Testiere apart. Curated with a discerning eye, the list features a diverse array of Italian wines, with a particular emphasis on those produced in the Veneto region.

Guide to Venice: Wine Shops

To bring a piece of Venice’s wine culture home with you, pay a visit to MilleVini . True to its name, which translates to ‘a thousand wines’, this shop offers an extensive selection of both local and international wines. The knowledgeable staff are more than happy to guide you through their offerings, ensuring you find the perfect bottle to remember your Venetian adventure by.

Venice’s wine scene is a reflection of the city itself – diverse, historic, and full of character. As you explore its wine bars, restaurants, and shops, you’ll not only discover the depth and breadth of Italian wines but also the stories, traditions, and people behind them. So raise a glass, make a toast, and let Venice’s wine journey unfold before you.

Guide to Venice’s Wines of the Veneto Wine Region

Nestled in Italy’s northeastern corner, the Veneto wine region is a viticultural powerhouse, producing a diverse range of wines that are as rich in character as the land they come from. With Venice as its jewel, this region boasts a winemaking history that stretches back centuries and continues to shape its identity today.

guide to venice - Your Perfect Guide to Venice, Italy: Visiting Venice - 2024 - 9

Veneto’s topography is varied, from the Alpine foothills to the Adriatic Sea , creating a myriad of microclimates that are ideal for viticulture. Its soils, too, are diverse, ranging from volcanic in the east to limestone and clay in the west. This geographical diversity is reflected in the wide array of wines produced here, each with its own unique flavor profile and style.

Without a doubt, one of the most famous wines from Veneto is Prosecco . Made primarily from the Glera grape, Prosecco is a sparkling wine known for its bright acidity, delicate bubbles, and refreshing flavors of green apple, pear, and white peach. The best examples come from the hilly areas between the towns of Conegliano and Valdobbiadene, where the cooler climate and steep slopes create ideal conditions for producing high-quality Prosecco.

Another standout from Veneto is Amarone della Valpolicella . This powerful red wine is made from a blend of local grape varieties, including Corvina, Rondinella, and Molinara. The grapes are traditionally dried for several months before fermentation, a process that concentrates their sugars and flavors, resulting in a full-bodied wine with rich notes of dried fruit, spice, and bitter chocolate. Amarone is capable of aging for decades, making it a favorite among collectors.

Beyond Prosecco and Amarone, Veneto produces a range of other noteworthy wines. Soave , made from the Garganega grape, is a crisp, aromatic white wine with flavors of green apple, citrus, and almond. Valpolicella and Bardolino , both light-bodied reds, are perfect for easy drinking, with their bright red fruit flavors and soft tannins.

In Veneto, wine is more than just a drink; it’s a reflection of the region’s rich history, diverse landscapes, and enduring traditions. Whether you’re sipping a refreshing Prosecco on a sunny afternoon or savoring a robust Amarone with a hearty meal, each glass offers a taste of Veneto’s unique viticultural heritage. So, next time you find yourself in Venice, take a moment to raise a glass to this remarkable wine region.

Vineyard Tours and Tasting Opportunities

Wine festivals and optimal visiting times.

For wine enthusiasts, Venice is not just a city of canals and gondolas, but also a destination for immersive wine experiences. The city’s rich wine culture extends beyond its wine bars and vineyards into vibrant festivals that celebrate the region’s viticultural heritage. These events offer an opportunity to taste a wide array of wines, meet local producers, and even learn about winemaking traditions.

One of the most notable wine events in Venice is the Venice WineFeast sponsored by the Sertoma Club of Venice. This annual event is a highlight of the city’s social calendar, offering guests an evening of fine wines, gourmet food, and live entertainment. Tickets tend to sell out quickly, so it’s advisable to book well in advance.

Another event worth noting is the Rosé on Rose Wine Fest . Held in June, this festival celebrates the pink-hued wine that has become a summer staple. The event features a variety of rosé wines, along with food pairings and live music.

In terms of timing your visit, autumn is a particularly exciting time for wine lovers in Venice. This is when the grape harvest takes place, marking the start of the winemaking process. Many vineyards in the Veneto wine region open their doors to visitors during this time, allowing you to witness the grape harvest firsthand. In conclusion, Venice offers a wealth of wine experiences that go beyond the bottle. By timing your visit to coincide with these festivals and events, you’ll not only get to taste some of the region’s finest wines but also immerse yourself in Veneto’s rich wine culture.

Practical Information for Travelers

Whether you’re traveling to Venice for its art, architecture, or wine, a little advance planning can go a long way in ensuring a smooth and enjoyable trip. Here’s some practical advice to help you navigate this enchanting city.

Transportation

Venice is unique in that it’s predominantly car-free, with canals serving as the city’s main thoroughfare. This makes it a wonderfully pedestrian-friendly destination where getting around on foot is not only feasible but also incredibly rewarding. Walking allows you to discover hidden squares, picturesque bridges, and charming alleyways that you might otherwise miss.

For longer journeys, the city’s vaporettos , or water buses, are an excellent option. Operated by ACTV, these boats ply various routes along the Grand Canal and to islands like Murano and Burano. Tickets can be purchased at vaporetto stations and must be validated before boarding. Keep in mind that vaporettos can get crowded during peak hours, so plan your travel accordingly.

If you’re looking for a more traditional Venetian experience, consider taking a gondola ride. While more expensive than a vaporetto, it offers a unique perspective of the city and is especially romantic at sunset.

Venice & Veneto Accommodations

Venice offers a broad range of accommodation options to suit all budgets and preferences. However, choosing the right location can greatly enhance your stay, particularly if you’re interested in wine experiences.

guide to venice - Your Perfect Guide to Venice, Italy: Visiting Venice - 2024 - 11

The Dorsoduro district is a fantastic choice in this regard. This vibrant neighborhood is home to numerous wine bars and enotecas, making it an ideal base for wine lovers. Here, you’ll find everything from budget guesthouses to luxury hotels.

Mid-range travelers might like Hotel American-Dinesen , a boutique hotel overlooking the San Vio Canal. The hotel is known for its friendly service, comfortable rooms, and convenient location near the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.

For a splurge, book a room at the gorgeous and world-famous St. Regis, Venice . Remember, Venice is a popular destination year-round, so it’s advisable to book your accommodation well in advance, especially during peak tourist seasons and major wine events.

Hidden Gems and Off-the-Beaten-Track Locations

While the allure of Venice’s iconic sights like Piazza San Marco and Rialto Bridge is undeniable, there’s a different side to the city waiting to be discovered. Away from the bustling tourist trails, you’ll find hidden gems where Venice’s authentic charm shines through. Here are some off-the-beaten-track locations that deserve a spot on your Venetian itinerary.

guide to venice - Your Perfect Guide to Venice, Italy: Visiting Venice - 2024 - 13

San Giorgio Maggiore : Situated directly across the lagoon from Piazza San Marco, this island offers stunning views of Venice. The eponymous church here is a masterpiece of Renaissance architecture, and its bell tower provides an unparalleled panorama of the city.

Isola di San Michele : This less-visited island serves as Venice’s cemetery and is a place of quiet reflection. The beautifully maintained gardens and ornate tombs make it a surprisingly serene and picturesque place to explore.

Ponte dei Pugni : In the heart of Dorsoduro district, Ponte dei Pugni or the Bridge of Fists is a bridge with a unique history. It was traditionally the site of fistfights between rival clans, a tradition dating back to the 17th century.

Libreria Acqua Alta : A delight for book lovers, this quirky bookstore is known for storing books in bathtubs and gondolas to protect them from flooding. It’s a charming little maze of second-hand books, with a gondola in the center stacked high with books of all kinds.

The Arsenale : Once the largest shipyard in the world, the Arsenale now houses exhibitions during the Venice Biennale. Its imposing gates and naval artifacts offer a glimpse into Venice’s maritime past.

Mazzorbo and Dorona Wine : For a truly unique experience, take a vaporetto to the tranquil island of Mazzorbo. Here, you’ll find Venissa, a vineyard that produces Dorona wine. This rare varietal, also known as the “Golden Grape”, was nearly extinct before being revived by the Bisol family. Venissa also houses a Michelin-starred restaurant and a charming guesthouse.

Scuola Grande Di San Rocco : Although less famous than its counterpart in San Marco, this school is home to an impressive collection of works by Tintoretto. The artist’s dramatic use of light and shadow is on full display here, making it a must-visit for art enthusiasts.

These are just a few of Venice’s hidden gems. By venturing off the beaten path, you’ll uncover the city’s lesser-known treasures and gain a deeper appreciation for its rich history and culture.

Venice Tours FAQs

You don’t need a tour to explore Venice and enjoy all it has to offer. However, a guided tour of Venice will provide you with insightful commentary and incredible facts about the city’s history and culture, allowing you to see Venice in a new light. I especially recommend joining a tour if it’s your first time in the city.

In my opinion, the best Venice excursions are the ones below, as they’re the most comprehensive options and include a visit to major landmarks.   • St Marks, Doges Palace, with Murano and Burano & Gondola Ride • Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola ride • Welcome to Venice: Walking Tour, St. Mark’s Basilica & Gondola Ride

2 days are enough to get a glimpse of Venice and its main attractions. I would recommend staying an extra day to ensure you see it all or add a fun day trip or experience to your visit. If you have limited time, make sure to spend at least 2 full days.

You can certainly see the major landmarks of Venice in one day, however, it’s going to be a rushed day and you might miss some attractions if you don’t plan your itinerary carefully. If you can’t afford more than a day in the city, I’d recommend joining a Venice In a Day: Basilica San Marco, Doges Palace & Gondola Ride Tour to see it all hassle-free.

Yes, Venice offers hop-on hop-off boat tours to explore the city at your pace.

Tour description

Get a crash course in dining out in venice on a local-led cicchetti tour..

Among Venice's stunning architecture and canals is some of the best food in Italy—if you know where to go and what to order! This Venice cicchetti tour will introduce you to the local tradition of small bites (cicchetti) and the popular bacari (Venetian wine bars), equipping you with the knowledge you need to eat well during the rest of your stay.

Learn why cicchetti are so much more than "Venetian tapas" as you try different kinds.

A local bacaro with a modern vibe is the first stop of your Venice cicchetti tour. Locals love this spot for its high-quality bread cicchetti and flavorsome spritzes, and that’s why you’ll be trying both!

From there, we'll enjoy a stroll through the lively San Polo neighborhood and make our way into artsy Dorsoduro as the evening comes alive. We'll head next to a quintessentially Venetian venue located in a historic building that's been beautifully renovated to preserve its wooden beams and stone arches. On the menu: a board of cold cuts and cheese paired with prosecco.

Afterwards, it’s time to drop by a Venetian wine bar that fuses contemporary and traditional. Situated right on the canal, it’s the perfect spot to sip some wine while choosing from their mouthwatering selection of fried cicchetti!

Cap off your evening with pasta, gelato, and more wine.

Now that you've gotten a taste of cicchetti culture in Venice, it's time for the main course: pasta! Wind your way through the backroads to a cozy place tucked away from the busy main streets. Here, you’ll sit down for a plate of traditional pasta and a glass of wine.

Finally, it wouldn’t be right to pass through Venice without seeking out some traditional Italian gelato. That’s exactly what you’ll find here at one of the last places still serving authentic, homemade gelato artigianale. Step onto the deck with your treat and take in the breathtaking view of the Giudecca Canal just in time for sunset!

By the time we part ways, you'll have gained a deeper understanding of Venice's lively food scene. Your guide will have equipped you with the local know-how and confidence to tackle any bacaro like a pro—no matter how crowded.
