What’s the weather like in the South Pacific?

The South Pacific islands have a tropical climate with only two seasons: a wet season from November to April and a dry season from May to October.

The weather is hot all year round, though it's hotter and stickier in the wet season and tropical cyclones and typhoons can occur.

The dry season sees clearer skies and cooler temperatures, though daytime highs rarely dip below the low 60s (F).

The water temperatures don't fluctuate much, with average temperatures lingering between a pleasant 81°F and 84°F.

When is the best time to visit the South Pacific?

The most popular time to visit the South Pacific is in the dry season from May to October when skies are clear and humidity is low.

However, these months also see the biggest influx of tourists so expect busier beaches and higher prices for things like accommodation.

The wet season is the quietest time in the South Pacific and if you don't mind hotter, stickier and wetter weather, it can be a great time to enjoy the islands in their most idyllic state.

What do I pack for the South Pacific?

The South Pacific region experiences tropical weather, so packing sandals, sunscreen and plenty of swimwear is a must. Because of the high temperatures and often humid conditions (depending on the time of year), packing lightweight, breathable clothing (think linen or cotton) is also a good idea. You might also want to consider packing comfortable walking shoes for exploring the islands and insect repellant for those pesky tropical bugs.

What is the internet access like in the South Pacific?

While the South Pacific is largely remote as a region (the only way to get there from neighboring countries is to fly), it's fairly connected with great internet access across Samoa, the Cook Islands, New Caledonia, Vanuatu, Papua New Guinea and Fiji. However, there are some exceptions as each island boasts lush tropical rainforests that can interfere with your mobile coverage. Having said that, if you stick to the populated areas, most hotels and restaurants should have wifi for you to connect to.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

This South Pacific Explorer Tour has an itinerary like no other -- 100% unique!

We explore an amazing array of islands in the South Pacific, including Palau, Samoa, Guam, Vanuatu, Tonga, and the Solomon Islands (as well as time in Manila).

Showcasing the most traditional cultures and exotic tropical landscapes in Oceania, this 24-day South Pacific tour will astonish travellers with its diverse landscapes.

During this adventure we will visit remote island communities and explore tropical landscapes. From soaring volcanic peaks to remote island villages, this tour will present unique encounters with native Melanesian, Micronesian and Polynesian peoples.

Explore lush jungles, stroll beaches brushed by palm fronds, view smoking volcanoes, and visit remote shorelines as part of this South Pacific adventure.

Because many of the islands of the Western Pacific are geographically isolated, and due to their proximity to different landmasses, they are as different from one another as it is possible to be.

Though many of these islands can be visited individually, this is a rare opportunity to be able to explore this entire region. We will stop at some of the more remote islands and appreciate the differences in landscape, culture, history and nature.

Oceania is a region centered on the islands of the tropical Pacific Ocean, and this tour will explore islands in all three sub-regions of Melanesia, Micronesia, and Polynesia.

Day 1 Arrive in Apia, Samoa Arrival in Apia, Samoa (airport APW). Each South Pacific island group has its own history, culture, language, geography, and geology. That is the nature of such a far-flung region, where hundreds or thousands of miles separate one island from the next. On the other hand, the islands have many things in common. Their indigenous peoples are descended from ethnic groups who migrated here several millennia ago. Many of their traditions and customs are the same, but with local quirks that have developed over the eons. Nowhere are the local variations as evident as in the Polynesian languages! Due to colonial neglect and historical isolation, the Pacific Islands, home to the world's most diverse range of indigenous cultures, continue to sustain many ancestral ways of life. Fewer than 6.5 million in all, the peoples of Oceania possess a vast repository of cultural traditions and ecological adaptations. Oceania is a vast, arbitrarily defined expanse of the world where the Pacific Ocean -- rather than land borders -- connects the nations. Its diverse nations have some of the worlds most remote and culturally isolated villages. One of the most memorable aspects of our travels to the South Pacific will be the fascinating encounters we will have with the cultures and traditions of the people in this beautiful region. In this part of the world, ancient cultures are still very much alive and are accessible for visitors to discover. ** Some itinerary modifications may occur closer to the departure date due to flight routing and schedule changes. Access to most islands is restricted by flight schedules (sometimes just 1-2 flights per week). This may, of course, impact the itinerary. The order of islands visited may change, and the number of nights on each island may have to be adjusted; ie we may lose 1 night on one island and gain a night on the other. Overnight in Apia, Samoa. Included Meal(s): Dinner

Day 2 Samoa: Island Touring The entire country of Samoa serves as a cultural storehouse of fa'a Samoa, the traditional Samoan way of life. Most Samoans still live in villages featuring fales (oval houses), some of which have stood for centuries (though tin roofs have replaced thatch). The island of Savai'i is especially well-preserved, and today much of Apia on the island of Upolu looks like it did when Robert Louis Stevenson settled here in 1889. Our touring today covers Mulinu'u, the sacred burial grounds of the chiefly families of Samoa; Parliament House, Independence Monument, Lands & Titles Court, German Monument (where the German flag was raised) and the landing site of the first Catholic Missionary to Samoa. A stop at the impressive Mulivai Cathedral in Apia to view exquisite stained glass windows and an architectural marriage of European & Traditional Samoan Designs followed by a visit at the Robert Louis Stevenson’s former home which is now a museum, a "must" visit of artifacts, books, and settings around the time he was residing in Samoa. Overnight in Apia, Samoa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 3 Samoa: Savai'i Island Touring Today will be spent exploring Savai'i, the largest island of Samoa. Savai'i is one of the largest of all Polynesian islands, and this great volcanic shield is also one of the least populated. Here we will find traditional villages with oval-shaped houses sitting alongside freshwater bathing pools fed by underground springs. Savaii is relatively undeveloped and regarded by many as the "real" Samoa. For our sightseeing we will depart from our hotel early in the morning and head for Mulifanua wharf in order to connect with the morning ferry to Savai'i. The crossing takes about 90-minutes, and will provide us with some great views of the Samoan islands. Upon arrival we will be met at the wharf and proceed with our island touring. At Savaii's fresh produce market we can view the locally grown produce and handicrafts. We later head back to the wharf for our return journey. Overnight in Apia, Samoa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 4 Samoa: Manono Island Touring Our tour today will visit Manono Island, which offers an insight into Samoan culture and life. An hour's drive to the west and then a further 20-minutes by boat brings us to Manono Island. The boat leaves from Cape Lefatu, with views of the crater island of Apolima along the way. Once reaching Manono we will be greeted by our Samoan hosts for a brief lecture on Samoan customs and etiquette. We will have the chance to learn about locally grown products, as well as the various local uses of the coconut. This island is completely enclosed by a reef, and the colours of the crystal clear water are simply stunning. Today there are only four villages on the island with a total population of 889. Electricity was only introduced here in 1995. This is the third largest island of Samoa, but has an area of only three-square kilometres and was in years gone by, the most important of the group of islands in a political sense, for it was here that the highest chiefs lived. In Manono there is a very Samoan atmosphere, no noise, no dogs, no vehicles, and the main thoroughfare is a footpath that follows the coast. We will enjoy a magnificent stroll viewing the lush beautiful gardens with cooling tradewinds. This is a real paradise for anyone looking for adventure, friendly people and an island that has hardly changed in the last 100 years. Life is very different than elsewhere. The men go to the coral reef spear-fishing every morning on their traditional canoes and come back only once they catch enough fish to feed the family. Overnight in Apia, Samoa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 5 Samoa: Aleipata Districts & East Coast We continue on a scenic drive via the Cross Island Road passing the Baha’i Temple, mountains, and rainforest until we reach the most Southern Point of the island. The South East coast of Upolu is a drive through villages until we arrive at the Lalamanu Beach where we will stop for a scrumptious BBQ and Umu Feast lunch with fresh local fruits in season. Sopo’aga Falls and mini Botanical Gardens is our next stop where a demonstration of the many uses of the coconut and coconut cream making is done. Le Mafa Pass (1,700ft above sea level) has breathtaking views of the east and south coastlines. The scenic drive takes us through lush green forests, plantations, and traditional Samoan villages. Continuing on, we will stop at Falefa village with it’s colourful gardens, ideal for a stretch and photo stop. Overnight in Apia. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 6 Apia, Samoa - Fly to Nuku'alofa, Tonga (Via Fiji) After breakfast today we will have some leisure time, before then transferring to the airport early this afternoon for our flight to Tonga (via Nadi, Fiji)*. * If you're wondering why we don't spend more time in Fiji, we have found in the past that time here was not considered a highlight by past travelers. That, plus the fact that the 'thrust' or theme of this tour is toward the more unknown obscure islands, is why we do not emphasize Fiji in our promotion of the tour or regard it as worthy of more time than we already give it. More than anything, it provides an important connection point for tying this complicated tour together! Overnight in Nuku'alofa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 7 Tonga: Touring & Atata Island Excursion The Kingdom of Tonga is a sovereign state and archipelago comprising 176 islands scattered in the southern Pacific Ocean. Of these islands only 52 of are inhabited. Tonga became known as the 'Friendly Islands' due to the friendly reception accorded to Captain James Cook on his first visit here in 1773. This is one of the last absolute monarchies in the world where social rule is based upon a feudal system where the king disburses land and positions without recourse to any elected body. Tongatapu, a coral island surrounded by coral reefs, is Tonga's largest island with over two-thirds of the country's small population. Today we visit the 'Ancient Tonga' village at Fangaloto, where we will learn about the fascinating myth of the coconut and observe the traditional methods of obtaining coconut milk. Discover the secrets of baking Tongan food in an earth oven and enjoy performance of local song and dance and discover the intricacies of tapa cloth making, mat weaving and wood carving. We'll also stop at a local market and enjoy a traditional "umu" lunch today. Overnight in Nuku'alofa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 8 Tonga: Tongatapu Island Touring Today will be spent touring the island of Tongatapu, and we will start by touring Nuku'alofa, situated on the north coast of Tongatapu, and our time here provides us with a great opportunity to experience this unique culture. A field to the west of the main wharf is the Pangai, where royal feasts, kava ceremonies, and parades are held. The Royal Palace overlooks the Pangai and is surrounded by towering Norfolk pines. During our touring we will be sure to see the Royal Tombs. King George I, King George II, Queen Salote, King Taufa'hau Tupou IV are buried at the center of the field. Outside of the capital, at the village of Mu'a, we will stop at the monument marking Captain Cook's Landing Place. The great British explorer landed and rested under a large banyan tree here when he came ashore in 1777 to meet with reigning Tui Tonga. One the most prominent sites on Tongatapu is the Ha'amonga Trilithon, located on the eastern tip of Tongatapu Island. This is the area where the eleventh Tongan King had his seat of power, and it is believed that Tu'i Tu’itatui built the structure in 1200 AD. The Ha'amonga 'a Maui has been scientifically interpreted as an early style sundial clock that recorded different seasonal changes. Nearby is Maka Fa'akinanga ('Leaning against the rock'). Made from the same stone as the Ha'amonga, the Maka Fa'akinanga is a large stone slab standing upright with markings on the front resembling an indentation of a large head, shoulders and back. Oral stories recount the belief that Tu'i Tu'itatui (eleventh Tu'i Tonga) often sat against the Maka Fa'akinanga and struck out with a staff at people so that they were kept at a safe distance for fear that they may make an assassination attempt. The small fishing village of Nukuleka on the northeast coast is possibly the site of first human settlement in Tonga. In 2008, Canadian archaeologist Professor David V. Burley claimed that it was the "cradle of Polynesia". In 2007, Burley led an archeological team, and uncovered pieces of Lapita pottery; which are estimated to be about 2,900 years old. Burley then stated: "Tonga was the first group of islands in Polynesia to be settled by the Lapita People about 3,000 years ago, and Nukuleka was their first settlement in Tonga." This finding challenged claims made by Samoa which, in the words of a New Zealand journalist, "has advertised itself for decades as the 'cradle of Polynesia'". The majestic blowholes of Pupu'a Puhi, located along the rugged coast near the village of Houma, provide a never ceasing display of the power of the sea. Here the power of the Pacific Ocean is forced through natural rock fissures to create instant skyscrapers of water up to 30-meters high. As the southerly winds blow into Tongatapu the sea is driven into the southern coastline and sea spray erupts into the air. As we proceed towards the village of Kolovai on the western tip of the island we will keep an eye out for the flying foxes in the treetops. Our last stop of the day will be at the Abel Tasman landing site. Overnight in Nuku'alofa. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Lunch

Day 9 Tonga: Fly to Port Vila, Vanuatu (Via Fiji) Early this morning we will transfer to the airport for our flight to Vanuatu via Fiji. With a population of approximately 221,000, Vanuatu boasts 113 distinct languages and innumerable dialects. This makes Vanuatu one of the most culturally-diverse countries on earth. This amazing diversity is a result of thousands of years of sporadic immigration from many Pacific countries. Over the millennia, natural boundaries; large open stretches of water, dense jungle and mountainous terrain, isolated many groups, even from the same ethnic origins, from each other. And isolation bred not just warfare, but quite different, sophisticated societies and political systems. Overnight in Port Vila. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 10 Vanuatu: Round Island Tour Today's full-day tour begins with a stop at Pepeyo Village for an amazing cultural experience. Visit and experience traditional practices and skills, and be mesmerized by custom dancing and an amazing fire-walking display. Next is the Blue Lagoon and Eton village. The water is slightly salty and so blue perhaps from the limestone fresh water springs and the tidal sea water. Try the rope swings into the water. Refreshments included, local organic fruits in season and juices. We also see the huge ancient banyan trees in Pangpang and learn the difference between the male and female trees and their traditional use. We enjoy a buffet lunch. As we go we'll also learn about WWII in the region and possibly view some relics. We make a stop at Gideon's Landing and visit Vanuatu Survivor Beach and and enjoy afternoon coffee/tea. Overnight in Port Vila. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 11 Vanuatu: Tanna Island / Yassur Volcano Excursion Today we will enjoy a scenic adventure to one of the world's most accessible active volcanoes! Our Yasur Volcano exploration starts with a scenic one-hour flight to Tanna Island. This journey takes in the spectacular views of Port Vila Harbour, South Efate and Erromango with its beautiful coastline (weather-permitting). On the approach to White Grass Airport in Tanna you will have a great view of the magnificent landscape of Tanna Island. Here we will be met by our friendly 4WD Safari staff and taken to a local resort for some refreshments. Our Volcano Tour begins with a 4WD journey across the island, passing local villages, dense native bush, stunning views and passing over volcanic ash plains as we approach Yasur Volcano. Once we reach the summit it is a short 10-minute uphill walk to the rim of the crater, where we will experience the awesome power of the world's most accessible active volcano! This ancient volcano is conspicuously located in one of the most pristine, unspoiled corners of the globe. The Island of Tanna is a natural paradise and a favourite destination for volcanologists and adventure travelers. In the local native dialect, Yasur means 'Old Man'. This volcano is 361 meters above sea level, and the crater itself is 300 meters wide and 100 meters deep. Visiting Mount Yasur is a 'once in a lifetime' experience, and your opportunity to watch nature at work. Overnight in Port Vila. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 12 Vanuatu: Island Touring - Fly to the Solomon Islands This morning we tour the town of Port Vila, the capital and largest town of Vanuatu. We see the best city sights and take a journey of discovery as we learn about the traditional villages of Port Vila, the chaotic British and French colonial history, and encounter Port Vila life today as we finish the tour at the bustling Central Market and Mahitahi Handicraft Market. Later today we transfer to the airport for our afternoon flight to the Solomon Islands. Just 9 degrees south of the equator, the Solomon Islands are comprised of 992 islands, of which 147 are inhabited. These island stretch 900 miles in a southeasterly direction from the Shortland Islands, on the border with Papua New Guinea, to the Santa Cruz Islands, which borders with Vanuatu. The archipelago covers an area of 461,000 sq km -- made up of deeply forested mountainous islands and low-lying coral atolls. As part of the Melanesian group of islands that also includes Papua New Guinea, Vanuatu, and Fiji, hunters and gatherers from Southeast Asia first settled the Solomon Islands. Seafarers followed later, and it is believed that early Papuan speaking settlers began arriving in the Solomon Islands around 30,000 BC. Austronesian speakers arrived in 4000 BC. Archaeological and linguistic evidence shows that people from Southeast Asia permanently settled the Solomon Islands at this time. Today, between 70 to 80 percent of the population live a subsistence way of life in their small villages, settlements and islands away from the main urban centres. The number of local languages listed for Solomon Islands is greater than 75. Communal, clan and family ties remain strong in these islands with the existence of the Wantok system. A key part of the Melanesian culture, Wantok means people from the same language groups who are blood relatives and part of the extended family support and assist one another. Traditional practices are still being followed, especially by those living in the interior of the country's larger islands. Off the beaten path, village life remains much as it has been for centuries. Overnight in Honiara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 13 Solomon Islands: Cocoa Farm Visit and City Tour We will begin our day by visiting the US Peace War Memorial. With a commanding position, the US Peace War Memorial was constructed in 1992 for the 50th anniversary of the Battle of Guadalcanal. It provides an excellent view of Iron Bottom Sound and the surrounding mountainous regions of Honiara and Guadalcanal. Later this morning we will continue to the Amazing Grace Cocoa Farm. Here we will have a full tour of the farm, and get the opportunity to learn all about the chocolate making process. This afternoon we will travel back into Honiara and complete our day of sightseeing with visits to the National Parliament, National Museum, and Art Gallery. Overnight in Honiara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 14 Solomon Islands: Central Guadalcanal Stepping out from the usual path into the islands of the Solomons is a totally unique and richly rewarding experience. Without doubt, this is one of the few remaining, truly un-spoilt tourist destinations of the world. The following day description should be seen as a guide only, as your Tour Leader and local guide/s will tailor your experience and possibly re-order the activities outlined below as conditions/variables dictate. This is an island group of rainforests and volcanoes. There are over 900 volcanic islands in the Solomon Islands, and here we will discover the palms, ferns and truly exotic orchids spread across the islands. Certain regions in the Solomon Islands served as battlegrounds during the Second World War. Guadalcanal is known for its many WWII sites, and we will visit several during our day. Overnight in Honiara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 15 Solomon Islands / Tulagi Island Excursion Today we will enjoy a full-day excursion to Tulagi Island in the Florida Islands group (also known as the Nggela Islands). This island group of the Solomon's sits immediately north of Honiara across the renowned Iron Bottom Sound. This will be a full day of discovery as we cruise through one of the few truly untouched areas of the South Pacific. Our boat trip takes us to Tulagi Island, the old capital of the Solomons. The Florida Group is made up of four large islands: Big Gela (or Nggela Sule), Small Gela (or Nggela Pile), Buena Vista Island, Sandfly Island as well as approximately 50 other surrounding smaller islands. The Japanese garrisoned Nggela Sule in April of 1942 in connection with their efforts to establish a seaplane base on neighboring Gavutu. Florida Island never became as famous as Guadalcanal, although it did serve as a small, very secondary base of operations for the US and Australian and New Zealand war effort in the Pacific. Following the Allied liberation of the island from the Japanese, it became the site of a US seaplane base. Tulagi (also known as Tulaghi), was the capital of the Solomon Islands Protectorate from 1896 to 1942, and is today the capital of the Central Province. A visit here is a must visit for the true intrepid traveller, and all of our sightseeing is done on foot. This original capital of the Solomon Islands was severely ravaged during the Second World War, and Honiara became the new capital after the war. Tulagi is in the center and entrance to the Florida Islands. Here one finds small provincial government offices, the police station, post office, main port, market and a few restaurants. Our stop at this colonial capital will include a walking tour, where we experience the true pace of life on an undeveloped island. In travel terms, these islands are still very much virgin territory, and our adventure today is an experience not to be missed. Overnight in Honiara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 16 Solomon Islands: West Guadalcanal Today we will continue to explore Guadalcanal, though this time our sightseeing will be focused on the western part of the island. We will spend the morning exploring a number of sites, including the Poha Caves, Vouza War memorial, and the Botanical Garden in Honiara. This afternoon you will have some leisure time before we regroup for dinner this evening. Overnight in Honiara. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 17 Honiara, Solomon Islands - Fly to Manila Today is a travel day, with a connection in Port Moresby (transit only) and then onwards to Manila, arriving this evening (dinner on board our flight). The Spanish knew the city of Manila as the jewel of their Pacific Empire, and today Manila is a city that has to be experienced to be understood. Located on the eastern shores of Manila Bay, Manila lay at the heart of Spanish activity in the Far East during the 16th century. Once known as the 'Pearl of the Orient', the city went on to witness several Chinese insurrections, a British occupation and a Sepoy mutiny, a war against the colonial Spanish and some of the bitterest fighting of World War II. Overnight in Manila. Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Day 18 Manila: Charms of Old Manila As we explore the "Charms of Old Manila", we will drive through Roxas Boulevard to Rizal Park, named in honor of the country's national hero, Dr. Jose Rizal. For people-watching there’s no better place than Rizal Park where, every day, locals can be seen jogging, picnicking, or simply hanging out with friends. At the Walled City of Intramuros we visit the remnants of Spain's conquistadors. We will explore this 'living museum' - the oldest part of the city known as 'between the walls' – the Spanish era walled city. It was here that Miguel Lopez de Legazpi built a fort on the site of a ruined Islamic settlement, with walls 13 meters thick and 3km long. Within this protective enclave, the exclusive preserve of the Spanish ruling elite, were 15 churches and 6 monasteries. The imposing Roman Catholic Cathedral is here, and has been rebuilt countless times. A walk through this area gives us a sense of the true history of this area. We continue to Fort Santiago, Manila's main line of defense against invaders from the sea. It is a stone fort guarding the entrance to the city from Manila Bay. It has been the site of many tragic moments in Philippine history. Then, we will visit Casa Manila, a reproduction of a 19th century house equipped with oriental and European décor, as well as Philippine antique furniture. Built by Imelda Marcos, this is a chance to see some stunning antique furniture and artwork. Our last stop for today will be Baluarte De San Diego. Located along the walls of Intramuros, Manila, it was designed and built by Jesuit priest Antonio Sedeno from 1586 to 1587 and it is one of the oldest stone fortifications in Intramuros. Overnight in Manila. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 19 Manila: Chinatown/ New Manila Tour / Fly to Palau We will begin the day with a walking tour in Binondo, Manila's Chinatown. Here we will be spoilt with the choice of many local must-eat delicacies. Then, we will proceed to the Chinese Cemetery, the second oldest cemetery in Manila after La Loma Cemetery. The cemetery includes Christian, Buddhist and Taoist burials. We will also visit the Minor Basilica and Archdiocesan Shrine of the Black Nazarene, popularly known as Quiapo Church. Our touring will then continue by taking us through Makati, the financial Center of the Philippines. We will soon arrive at the American Cemetery and Memorial, located on a large plateau with beautiful and breathtaking views around the city of Manila. The tour then proceeds to Ayala Museum, which includes a showcase of works by family member Fernando Zobel, a prominent artist in his own right. This evening we head to the airport for our late night flight to Palau. Overnight in Koror. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 20 Palau: Island Touring The Palau Islands are an archipelago composed of about 350 islands and atolls having an area of approximately 160 square miles. All of the islands except two small atolls to the north and the islands of Angaur and Peleliu to the southwest are enclosed within the barrier or fringing reef. These islands are located at a crossroads where the Pacific Ocean meets the Philippine Sea, creating one of the worlds' richest zones of tropical marine bio-diversity. This island group is home to one of the highest number of species not found anywhere else in the world. The main island of Babeldaob is the second largest landmass in Micronesia (after Guam) and is recognized as one of the largest undisturbed tropical rainforests in Micronesia. We will spend today exploring the island of Babeldaob, Palau's largest island, and often called the "Big Island". This is a truly mysterious place that appears physically impenetrable for the most part and shields enigmatic monoliths whose origin and purpose is unknown. The east coast has beautiful stretches of sandy beach, while the west coast has a largely mangrove-studded shoreline. Ancient stone footpaths connect many villages, there are no traffic lights, and resort hotels are a world away. Archaeological highlights include the Stone Faces (Badrulchau) of Ngerchelong, the ancient Stone Monoliths, and the mysterious terraced hillsides found in various locations around Babeldaob. We will also visit a traditional Bai (Men's meeting house). In the past each village had a Bai built on top of a raised stone platform. These houses were constructed from giant timbers reinforced with coconut fiber ropes, and assembled without nails in a timber frame design. Women were only allowed to visit the Bai ra Cheldebechel. Today we see one of the few remaining bais in Palau, which offers us a unique look at authentic Palau'an culture. At some point during our time in Palau, we'll visit the Belau National Museum, the oldest museum in Micronesia. The indoor and outdoor exhibits detail Palau's history, and include information about the past possessors of the territory such as Germany, Japan, Spain and the USA. In the museum we will see exhibits from all eras of Palauan life, including artworks, photography, sculpture, storyboards and more, all tracing the history of the colonial occupation on the island. We also hope to include the Etpison Museum, a private collection including a variety of displays. We will learn about the foreign influence on Palau, and will see displays ranging from local tools and artifacts to archeological sites and traditional canoes. The museum also has a large collection of antique maps and prints of Micronesia. Overnight in Koror. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 21 Palau: UNESCO Protected Rock Islands & Peleliu Island Excursion Today we will enjoy a scenic boat trip and excursion to the historic island of Peleliu. Our boat journey will take us past the Rock Island Lagoon, recently added to the UNESCO World Heritage list. This is one of the crown jewels of Micronesia, and a true vista of serene and surreal beauty. Here one finds over 400 uninhabited limestone islands of volcanic origin; many of them display unique 'mushroom-like' shapes in turquoise lagoons surrounded by coral reefs. The aesthetic beauty of the site is heightened by a complex reef system featuring over 385 coral species and different types of habitat. The site harbours the highest concentration of marine lakes anywhere, isolated bodies of seawater separated from the ocean by land barriers. Peleliu is a place where the irresistible force of the sea meets the immovable mass of the reef, and the results are spectacular with countless species of fish. With the Japanese controlling Palau by World War II, Peleliu became an important military target for the United States. The Japanese had built a series of underground tunnels and fortifications, and they had tens of thousands of men stationed here. By the time the war was over, nearly 11,000 Japanese and 1,000 American soldiers had lost their lives in this area. Our tour of Peleliu Island will cover many important natural and historic sites, including several WWII remnants and the local War Memorial Museum. We later return by boat to Koror. We have a few hours of down time before departing for the airport for our early morning flight to Guam. Overnight in Koror. Included Meal(s): Breakfast, Lunch and Dinner

Day 22 Palau - Fly to Tumon, Guam USA Today we have a flight in the early hours of the morning to Guam. Guam is not only the largest island in Micronesia, but it is the largest and southernmost island in the Mariana Islands archipelago. The island is a vibrant tropical paradise in the middle of the Pacific, and away from the beaches one finds a melting pot of Asian, European, Pacific Rim and American cultures. With its strategic location in the Pacific Ocean, this territory of the United States has been claimed and conquered by many different nations throughout its long history. Ferdinand Magellan passed through here in 1521! Guam was then claimed for Spain in 1565, and then later colonized by the Spanish beginning in 1668 as the island was in perfect position to become a resting place for Spanish traders. We will have a leisurely morning and commence sightseeing after lunch. Our sightseeing today will focus on the central region of the island. We will visit the South Pacific Memorial Park; this was a main battlefield area during the pacific war. We continue to Hagatna, Guam's capital. Centrally located, this is a scenic village that offers a variety of cultural, historical, and religious sites. Spain ruled the islands for 333 years and Hagatna has many historic buildings dating from this era. One of the only spots above Hagatna with an unobstructed view of north-central Guam and the surrounding waters is Fort Apugan, known locally as Fort Santa Agueda. The fort is the sole survivor of Spanish era forts in Hagatna. Our sightseeing will include a visit to Latte Stone Park. Latte stone pillars are believed to have provided the support to ancient Chamorro houses built as early as 500 AD. We'll also visit the new Guam Museum, opened in 2016. The museum features interactive, state-of-the-art technology and the most complete display of Guam’s history and culture in the Chamorro language to date. Over 300 curated artifacts, thousands of images, multiple audios, and short films have been carefully pieced together in seven different galleries to guide visitors through the historical, Chamorro narrative of Guam. Overnight in Tumon. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 23 Guam: Island Touring We will travel from the heart of Guam through the picturesque southern regions of the island. Being mostly rural, this is one of the most untouched and undeveloped areas on the island. Overlooking Apra Harbour is Orote Point, the location of one of the first recorded sites of human settlement in the Mariana Islands. Archaeologists calculate that over 3,500 years ago, people used Orote Point for subsistence living. In 1944, Apaca Point was witness to the American liberation of Guam. Fort Soledad (Nuestra Senora de la Soledad), on the southern tip of Umatac, was one of the last forts built by the Spanish in support of the 19th century galleon trade. We will enjoy many panorama views of the grassy hills, deep jungle ravines, and miles of coastline that make up the Territorial Seashore Park. Located at the south of the Pago River, Pago Bay was once home to a Spanish settlement, and is considered to be one of the most picturesque bays on Guam. We later return to Tumon for our farewell dinner. Overnight in Tumon. Included Meal(s): Breakfast and Dinner

Day 24 Departure Departure from Tumon, Guam (airport GUM). BON VOYAGE! Included Meal(s): Breakfast

Inclusions Breakfast and dinner or lunch daily (hotels and local restaurants). All accommodation, transport, sightseeing and entrance fees for sites noted as 'visited' in the detailed itinerary. Gratuities for local guides, drivers, restaurant staff, porters. Airport transfers for land & air customers. Please Note: Tour cost also includes ALL internal flight costs. Be advised that the taxes on these flights (which we list separately) are rather high at approximately US$700. PLEASE take the map on this page with a grain of salt. The sequence of islands featured on this program tends to shift often owing to infrequent and ever-changing air schedules. As such, the map should be used for general guidance only.

Exclusions International airfare to/from the tour. Tour Leader gratuity, lunches, drinks, personal items (phone, laundry, etc), locally paid departure taxes, domestic and international air taxes (if applicable). Any optional activities not listed as part of the itinerary (ie snorkeling/scuba excursions). Airport transfers for Land Only customers. Optional trip cancellation insurance. Our post-reservation trip notes offer further guidance on optional meal costs and shopping.

Seasonality and Weather As this tour covers a large and diverse piece of geography, special attention has been paid to visiting all of the places covered at, or close to, the best times in terms of weather that one can typically expect. Overall, you can expect warm/hot, tropical conditions throughout. Though our intention is to avoid rainy periods, one can expect tropical showers at any time.

Transport and Travel Conditions Land transport is provided by private a/c coaches, the size of which will vary according to ultimate group size and location. Larger touring buses may be used in some locations such as Guam. Due to the more remote locations and limited infrastructure of most islands, we will have smaller vehicles of 16-25 seats, which may sometimes double as the local school bus, so don't expect plush touring coaches. Most inter-island flights will be operated by Air Pacific/Fiji Airways. We have several boat excursions on this tour, which may require that you be able to step over gunwales into the boat, or sit thereon and swing your legs over. Please note that many islands visited have very strict rules pertaining to land ownership and usage, such that it may not be possible for us to simply stop to stretch our legs, take photos, or, say, visit a village or beach on a whim. Doing so could invite problems pertaining to "trespassing" or exorbitant charges for simply taking a photograph. Access to these rarely visited islands is extremely difficult, and restricted by infrequent flight schedules, which can at any time. As such, itinerary modifications may occur close to the departure date or while the tour is in the field. The amount of time spent on each island will therefore be entirely dictated and determined by the available flight schedules at the time of operation of the tour. As a result, the order of islands visited may change, and the number of nights on each island may have to be adjusted -- ie we may lose one night on one island and gain a night on another, or some connection points may be replaced entirely (ie Manila or Nadi). After the trip you may have a sense that you had too much time in one place and not enough time in another. One might also observe that a lot of time is spent in airports and on planes, all necessary aspects of a trip like this. So sit back, relax, and appreciate an astonishing array of places where very few travellers ever set foot. If we are forced to make material/content changes after your reservation, we will advise you by email. We will not, however, consider such adjustments sufficient reason for you to cancel your trip without penalty. We rate this tour a "level 2," as, though it is not strenuous per se, this tour is ambitious, covering a huge area and involving many flights, some of which are long and possibly at inconvenient times. On the ground, activities are leisurely and not tremendously active; however, that said, the real consideration is the HEAT and humidity, which can sap your strength and cause fatigue. PLEASE NOTE: Due to the complicated nature of our South Pacific itineraries, we regret that we are not able to offer custom/private tour services for these trips.

South Pacific's most idyllic islands for a tropical getaway

Celeste Brash

The South Pacific confounds even the savviest map buffs with its splatter of dots spread across the world's biggest ocean. What you can't tell from a map, or even most tourist brochures is that these palm-laden pinpricks are as diverse as the region is vast. While the postcards might look similar, Fiji and Tahiti are not interchangeable or even much alike when it comes to landscapes and culture.

As you move east across the Pacific from the Solomon Islands to Easter Island , the flora and fauna becomes less diverse. Islands to the east like New Caledonia and Fiji have land snakes and fruit bats, French Polynesia and Easter Island don't. Underwater you'll find more soft corals in the plankton-rich waters to the west but better visibility in the greater reaches of open water to the east.

South Pacific islands are culturally and geographically divided into Polynesia (from the Greek meaning 'many islands') and Melanesia (meaning 'black islands'). Polynesian islands include Samoa , Tonga , Cook Islands , French Polynesia and Easter Island while Fiji, New Caledonia, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands are Melanesian. The colonial history of the islands has resulted in a modern-day patchwork of English- and French-speaking island groups (plus Spanish in the far eastern Easter Island).

Still confused? Here's the low-down on the main regions and their highlights.

Man paddling canoe on Raratonga coast.

Rarotonga & the Cook Islands

Best for beaches and hospitality Languages: English (official), Cook Islands Maori (Rarotongan)

The Cook Islands mix Polynesian blue water and hospitality with New Zealand (who administer the islands) savoir faire . On the lush, main isle of Rarotonga beach bum all day then experience an 'Island Night' Polynesian feast (pork cooked in an earthen oven, taro root and more) and a local dance performance.

Hop a plane to Aitutuaki atoll, with its low-lying coral islets curling around one of the world's most fantastic lagoons. When not diving, snorkelling or swimming in blue water, check out the atoll's ancient stone temples called marae .

Young woman walking on suspension bridge over Wainibau stream, Lavena Coastal Walk, Taveuni Island, Fiji. Taveuni is the third largest island in Fiji.

Best for: friendly vibes and backpacker adventures Languages: English, iTaukei, Fiji Hindi

Fiji receives nearly the same amount of visitors (about 630,000 annually) as the rest of the South Pacific combined but it still feels wild and exotic. Scents of Indian curries waft from city roti shops while in villages Melanesian families invite you in for a bit of 'grog' ( kava , a slightly narcotic locally made beverage). Diving is another popular activity here and underwater you'll find seascapes of soft corals so dense they look like purple and white forests.

Viti Levu , the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands have the best beaches and most resorts. It's also easy to get off-the-beaten-path on islands like the lush, dive havens of Taveuni and Vanua Levu or the near-roadless traditional escape of Kadavu.

Hammock at beach on Moorea island in French Polynesia

Tahiti & French Polynesia

Best for: luxury resorts and surfing Languages: French, Polynesian

With over 115 islands spanning five archipelagos, French Polynesia has it all from the legendary, luxe Bora Bora and its over-the-water-bungalows to uncountable forgotten islands perfect for Crusoe-wannabes looking for a basic beach bungalow. Wherever you go, you'll be kissed with a touch of French style.

Dive with plentiful reef sharks and manta rays in the Tuamotu Atolls ; ogle the world's fastest hip shaking at a Tahitian dance performance during the July Heiva Festival; hike to waterfalls and mountain ridges on Tahiti, Moorea , the Marquesas Islands and more; or watch professional surfers brave cavernous tubes at Teahupoo , Tahiti.

Tourists watching Mt Yasur volcano. Tanna, Vanuatu

Best for: volcanoes and hiking Languages: (more than 100) Bislama (creole), English, French, others

If you want rumbling volcanoes, kava bars, shipwrecks to dive on and wild jungles to trek but still want your roads paved and your cheese French, Vanuatu is the place for you.

The main Island of Efate is home to the endearingly dusty capitol of Port Vila but the real action lies on the outer islands. Tanna is dominated by fiery and climbable Mt Yasur. Espiritu Santo has upscale resorts and a tough trek to the massive Millennium Cave filled with waterfalls and bats. Dive and snorkel WWII wrecks to coral gardens.

Aerial of To-Sua Ocean Trench in the rainforest.

Samoa & American Samoa

Best for surfing and hiking Languages: English, Samoan (Polynesian), Samoan/English

The Samoan Islands are divided into two countries – Samoa, which is independent, and American Samoa , which - you guessed it – is an American territory. Both however remain very traditionally Polynesian. Although 'Upolu in Samoa has a few relatively upscale resorts, all the islands feel untouristy and much other accommodation is in the form of basic open beach huts called fale .

You'll find some of the South Pacific's best and most pristine beaches, lots of smiles, flower-filled villages and a pace of life that stands out as slow even in this region. There are few organized excursions but for independent types the opportunity for hiking, cultural connections, surfing and snorkelling are endless.

Lagoon on Mare Island, New Caledonia. There are several people paddling in the clear water. Either side of the lagoon are hulking grey rocks topped with vibrant green plants and moss.

New Caledonia

Best for: food and water sports Language: French, 33 Melanesian-Polynesian dialects

New Caledonia's massive Grande Terre is the third largest island in the Pacific (after Papua New Guinea and New Zealand) and is home to the second largest double barrier coral reef in the world (after Australia's Great Barrier Reef).

Beyond the diving, wind sports and sailing in the lagoon, the land supports a mix of Melanesian and French cultures that bring an elegant balance to hospitality, cuisine and accommodation ranging from beach bungalows to very posh resorts.

Outlying islands such as Île des Pins and Ouvéa offer more remote escapes with some of the Pacific's best beaches and heaps of delicious seafood.

A adult and baby humpack baby whale swim close to the surface of the Pacific Ocean. The image is taken from underwater, side on to the whales.

Best for: swimming with humpback whales Language: English, Tongan

The Kingdom of Tonga is a country of traditional values and strong Christianity backed by endless blue bays, sparkling beaches and ancient stone temples.

The main island of Tongatapu is the seat of the monarchy but most visitors head quickly to the Vava'u Group . Here you'll find one of the best places on Earth to swim with or watch humpback whales. Sailboats flock around the Vava'u's many sheltered blue bays while plenty of scarcely discovered surfing waves are tucked along the coasts.

Horses at Rano Raraku volcanic crater lake at Rano Raruku quarry.

Easter Island (Rapa Nui)

Best for archaeology and wildlife Language: Spanish

Few places on the planet are as intriguing Easter Island 164 square kilometer island so far east, it's technically a part of Chile. Giant, sober-faced stone statues called moai dominate the landscape here whether they are full-standing or still only partially carved from rock; their mystery is an even larger presence.

Tour the island on foot, bike or horseback, find small white beaches and enjoy the lively Polynesian culture mixed with South American spice. Tourism is on the rise but the island remains personable and dedicated to eco-travel.

Two Blacktip Reef Sharks, Carcharhinus melantopterus, swimming over shallow corals on the reef edge with the surface above.

Solomon Islands

Best for: diving and eco-tourism Language: English, Melanesian pidgin, English, 120 indigenous languages

Arguably one of the wildest destinations in the South Pacific, the Solomon Islands host a traditional Melanesian culture and an ever-lingering WWII history. Guadalcanal , the capital island, is home to numerous historical war sites.

For relaxation head to the New Georgia Islands , particularly Marovo Lagoon for its fish-filled lagoon dotted with small islands. Beaches are few but the kayaking, diving and traditional culture make it a true adventure.

An aerial shot of the islands of Palau. The small lumpy islands are covered in dense greenery and surrounded by jewel-blue waters.

Remote South Pacific islands

Where to begin? Some places like Niue , Tuvalu , Kiribati and Wallis & Futuna have flight connections while others like Tokelau and Pitcairn Island can still only be reached by sea . If you're not booking that South Pacific adventure-of-a-lifetime this year, then what are you waiting for?

The South Pacific Islands - Melanesia, Polynesia & Micronesia

The South Pacific islands are scattered in a huge ocean larger than all the other oceans put together but its landmasses are tiny. The region comprises of around 30 island nations, some mere dots on the atlas. The largest island nation is Papua New Guinea (PNG) followed by New Zealand which are both quite considerable land-masses, but it's then followed by Fiji whose collective islands compressed would be smaller than Wales! In terms of cultural identity, the South Pacific Islands are split into three regions: Polynesia , lying in the west and including Samoa, Cook Islands and Tahiti but also extending north to Hawaii and south to New Zealand; Melanesia , in the east and including Fiji, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands; and Micronesia in the north-west and including Kiribati, Guam and the Federated States of Micronesia.

Choosing a Destination in the South Pacific Islands

Whilst there are numerous South Pacific islands to visit, only a handful of them offer mainstream tourism. Tuvalu, for example, has tourist arrivals numbering less than one hundred people a year.! Even the Solomon Islands, one of the larger group of islands in the South Pacific, has less than 10,000 tourist arrivals each year, and the majority of these are either business travellers or hard-core scuba diving enthusiasts. The following South Pacific island destinations are listed by tourist popularity. Fiji, the most popular, received almost 900,000 tourists per year in 2018, almost the same as its total population, but compared to Hawaii's 10million annual tourists it doesn't feel overcrowded! The second most popular country for tourist arrivals was French Polynesia with 220,000 tourists, the majority arriving from France and USA.

ISLANDS by POPULARITY (# tourists per year in 2019)

islands south pacific islands

# 1 - Fiji Islands (880,000)

Fiji is the number one hot spot in the South Pacific and received over 800,000 tourists a year pre Covid-19, but this is not even a tenth of what Hawaii receives! But Fiji has what most other places around the world don't have: literally hundreds of small tropical islands with stunning beach resorts and nothing ever feels crowded or face-paced. Visit Fiji for perfect white beaches, snorkelling reefs and smiling locals performing traditional dances. Fiji has resorts that cater to families, wedding parties and honeymooners, but Fiji’s charms are for everyone. Away from the beach, you can try out white-water rafting or golf. And the food’s great too – fresh, tropical fruits, fish marinated in lemon and coconut milk and, thanks to immigration from India, you can dine on spicy curry.

# 2 - French Polynesia (220,000)

French Polynesia is one of the best known destinations of the South Pacific, partly because of the alluring tale of Mutiny of the Bounty and the exotic paintings of Paul Gauguin . With its palm trees, crystal waters, volcanoes and lush forests, all your South Sea fantasies are made real. You can visit here on a cruise, but French Polynesia is best experienced on a longer visit, where you have time to relax and enjoy the amazing sights and stay in an overwater bungalow. The destination is famous for luxury and is one of the most desirable places in the world for honeymoons. The food is great too – thanks to the French influence, you can enjoy fine wines and European cuisine with a local flavour, although you should try the barbecued sucking pig at indigenous-style buffets.

# 3 - The Cook Islands (170,000)

The scattered Cook Islands have a small population, but you’ll be assured of a great welcome even at the international airport where a serenader welcomes each plane load of tourists and your hosts wait outside with a flower lei. This South Sea paradise is largely undeveloped, and its islands are peaceful sanctuaries where you can sunbathe, swim and windsurf to your heart’s content. Rarotonga and Aitutaki are the only islands with mainstream tourism so choosing where to visit for your holidays isn't difficult. Whichever island you choose you'll enjoy the lush plants, white beaches, crystalline seas and clear blue skies. The Cook Islands are a little piece of heaven on earth.

# 4 - Samoa (140,000)

Robert Louis Stevenson, the author of Treasure Island, was a man who knew a lot about beautiful Pacific Islands – and it was Samoa that Stevenson chose to retire to. Lush, green Samoa is one of the Pacific’s most scenically varied destinations. These islands are a popular with discerning travellers, but also have excellent golf courses, and attract anglers and surfers. Traditional culture remains important here; visit a village to experience island hospitality and perhaps see a game of Kilikiti, the Samoan answer to cricket. Samoan food is unique and delicious – the national dish, palusami, consists of coconut cream and other ingredients wrapped in taro leaves and baked in a traditional umu.

# 5 - New Caledonia (120,000)

New Caledonia is a perfect blend of Gallic and Pacific. You can combine trips to the elegant shopping districts and fine dining restaurants with sunbathing on pristine white sands. Perfect for honeymooners – who can resist the combination of French romance on a beautiful island paradise – New Caledonia is also a prime destination to enjoy snorkelling and scuba diving. But anyone will enjoy the beaches and food, and if you’re in search of solitude you can sail off to some of the remoter islands. Try learning a little bit of French before you go to enjoy this fantastic destination to its fullest potential.

# 6 - Vanuatu (115,000)

Vanuatu’s colonial name was the New Hebrides – although what these sunny Pacific islands have to do with the original Scottish Hebrides is anyone’s guess. Vanuatu is a particularly popular short-haul destination for Kiwis, but families, couples and honeymooners of all nationalities will enjoy these wonderful islands. For those who want to get away from screaming kids, for whatever reason, then there are a number of child-free hotels. The Vanuatu people are particularly friendly and love visitors, although their own cultural values remain very important in rural areas. Vanuatu shares much of the same cuisine as other island nations in the region, but is particularly noted for its meat – the local steaks are highly recommended.

# 7 - The Kingdom of Tonga (30,000)

Proud, independent and religious Tonga has never been colonised by a European power. A unique island culture and one of the last few remaining absolute monarchies anywhere in the world, Tonga’s friendly people are unlike any other. There are many sights and activities related to Tongan culture, including sacred tombs, dancing displays and craft workshops. As you’d expect from an island paradise, the sea and beaches are star attractions. Humpback whales migrate here to spend six months of every year resting, mating and giving birth in the protected bays, and you can take a trip to watch and hear them sing. You can also enjoy surfing and swimming in the clear blue ocean; whatever you do, relax into the Tongan pace of life.

# 8 - Solomon Islands (15,000)

The Solomon Islands, with their ancient Melanesian culture, are a beautiful and otherworldly place to visit. Now relatively peaceful, the islands have a turbulent history of slaving, cannibalism, war and ethnic tension. But, you’d hardly guess this when canoeing on placid rivers which wind their way through verdant jungles, swimming with dolphins, enjoying the beautiful and unique atolls, or snorkelling or diving to see the enormous range of fish and other sea life that dwell beneath the blue waves. Those with an interest in botany will particularly enjoy the spectacular range of orchids, while you can also visit active volcanoes.

read our detailed guide to Solomon Islands

# 9 - Niue Island (5,000)

The South Sea Islands are all relaxing destinations, but tiny Niue must be the ultimate place to turn up and chill out. There are no touristy developments, just a few hotels and guest-houses, and the locals want to keep it that way. There are fewer than 100 hotel rooms in total, so your chance of being caught up in a crush of fellow visitors is incredibly remote – in fact, you’re unlikely to even have to share a swimming cove or a whale. if you're lucky enough to swim with one - Niue is one of only three places in the world you can do this.

read our detailed guide to Niue Island

# 10 - Hawaii Islands (10,000,000)

Whilst not theoretically located in the South Pacific, the Hawaii Islands are an important ingredient of the Polynesian culture and as much a vision of the South Seas as any island in the Pacific. With its fantastic golf courses, stunning scenery, bustling beach life and exceptional surfing, Hawaii is a good choice for a lively less cultured holiday but one where the romantic South Sea ambience and secluded beaches are hard to find. Every corner of the islands has been discovered now for many years and being one of the 50 states of the USA it is overly commercial but never-the-less great fun.

South Pacific Island Hopping – A Guide to Travelling In & Between French Polynesia, Samoa & The Cook Islands

For as long as I can remember I’ve been obsessed with the South Pacific . It’s not just the white sand beaches and turquoise water, but the culture and traditions that always intrigued me. I visited Fiji 10 years ago and loved it, so when Enrico and I were discussing which places we wanted to visit this year, the South Pacific was high on the list. I did some research into South Pacific island hopping and soon discovered it’s not quite as easy as I expected to travel from island to island, even when you’re travelling within the same country. There aren’t that many ferries, and often the only option is to take lots of flights. It’s totally worth it though (although I feel a little guilty about my carbon footprint this year). After two months of island hopping in the South Pacific, here are our top tips!

How to Island Hop in The South Pacific!

Before you start looking at which Pacific islands to visit, it’s worthwhile looking at the logistics of travel between them.

I had imagined that we would take ferries between lots of the South Pacific islands, but in reality, there are very few. There are cargo ships, which do sometimes take passengers, but the timetables change and they give priority to locals, plus you can’t book in advance. We really wanted to do this as it sounded like such an adventure (and it’s cheap). But in actuality, we only had two months, and you really need a lot of time to spare in case you can’t get on the boat when it arrives and need to wait for the next one, which could be in a few weeks’ time.

If you have a yacht and plenty of time, then you can sail between the islands, but we sadly do not have a yacht, (and we don’t know how to sail so couldn’t hire one.) Once I have more sailing experience this would definitely be something I’d like to try though! If you plan on sticking to one country, you could try a diving boat, such as a Fiji liveaboard , or there are also big cruise ships, but we wanted to have lots of time on the islands to explore so that wasn’t for us either.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

You might be surprised to know that there aren’t direct flights between most of the countries in the South Pacific, meaning you have to fly into Auckland and then back out. This will have an impact on cost, route and time. After hours spent looking at flights I worked out which of the Pacific islands connect and this dictated our route.

For example –

Fiji is quite a good hub – you can fly from Fiji to Vanuatu and to Tonga, so it can make a good trio with those two destinations.

From the Cook Islands, there is a direct flight to Tahiti (French Polynesia), once a week and you can fly onto Easter Island or Hawaii from Tahiti.

Number 1 on our list was French Polynesia . I’ve always wanted to go there, so that was definitely going to be in our South Pacific itinerary, and with the link to the Cook Islands , we also added that to the route.

For the final island, we considered Tonga – we were going to be travelling during the whale migration, which has big appeal – but eventually decided on Samoa. Although this meant flying into Auckland and back out to get to Tahiti, we were both really keen to visit Samoa because from everything I’d read it still has the most traditional culture of the Pacific Islands. (Something we found to be true of the islands we visited).

For our next South Pacific Island adventure, we are hoping to visit Vanuatu, New Caledonia and the Solomon Islands, as there are direct flights between the three.

I have also travelled to Fiji twice, which you can read about here .

Getting Around in The South Pacific

Within your chosen countries, (ours being Samoa, French Polynesia and the Cook Islands), you then have to think about island hopping again, as they are all made up of a number of islands. This is also true of Fiji, Tonga, the Solomon Islands, New Caledonia and so on.

Getting Around Samoa

Samoa is the easiest (and therefore cheapest) to travel to. There are two main islands which are connected by a car ferry. There are other small islands, but most don’t really have any tourist infrastructure and there is a lot to see on both Upolu and Savai’i, meaning you most likely won’t feel the need to see the others. The best way to get around the islands is by car, so I advise hiring one from the airport in Apia . There are buses, but they aren’t that frequent, and often stop far from the beaches and resorts.

Check out the ultimate Samoa itinerary

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Getting Around French Polynesia

There are 118 islands in French Polynesia, also known as the Islands of Tahiti. We had two months to travel the South Pacific and that’s not enough to visit all of the islands in French Polynesia. Plus some of them you can’t even fly to. A big slice of your French Polynesian budget will go on flights. I totally recommend buying a flight pass from Air Tahiti . It’s a fixed price and each package includes a certain group/number of islands. We did the Bora Bora-Tuamotu Pass, even though we didn’t visit all of the French Polynesian islands available in our pass, it still worked out cheaper. If you don’t like flying in small planes you may wish to reconsider visiting French Polynesia – or look into cruise/sailing options. Otherwise, you can stick to Tahiti and Mo’orea which are connected by a ferry.

Read our two week French Polynesia itinerary here

Depending on which islands you’re visiting, it’s a good idea to hire a car , even if only for a day or two. Some of the islands are small enough to get around by bicycle (Rangiroa), and some you don’t really need one (Bora Bora).

Book a rental car in French Polynesia

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Getting Around The Cook Islands

There are flights (and cargo ships) between the Cook Islands, which are fairly expensive considering how short some of the flights are. We decided to visit just two islands, Aitutaki and the main island of Rarotonga, in order to reduce the money spent on travel. In hindsight, I would have liked to have visited Aitu as well, but there is always next time!

It’s worth hiring a car on both Aitutaki and Rarotonga, however, the latter does have a bus service that loops the island. But the car gives you much more freedom to explore.

Which Islands to Visit in the South Pacific?

Now you’ve decided which countries you’re going to, you’ll be wondering which islands to visit! I’ll be writing more detailed guides to each of the islands we visited, but here is a brief overview of the South Pacific islands we visited (in order).

Upolu, Samoa

The most populated island of Samoa, home to the international airport and the country’s capital city – Apia. There are lots of beautiful beaches, particularly along the south coast, where you will also find the famous To Sua Ocean Trench. You’ll find our top things to do in Upolu, Samoa here .

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Savai’i, Samoa

Savai’i is much quieter and less populated than Upolu, but larger in size. It has stunning beaches and impressive lava fields along with blowholes and jungle. The ferry from Upolu takes 1 hour 15 minutes and it’s totally worth making the trip. Our favourite beach in the whole of Samoa was on this island at Falealupo.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Check out the perfect 10 day Samoa itinerary.

Tahiti, French Polynesia

Tahiti is the transport hub of French Polynesia, with the only international airport. Many flights to other French Polynesian islands also transit through here. It is a volcanic island so the beaches have black sand but have a different kind of beauty to the white sand beaches of the other tropical islands . There is excellent surfing on Tahiti and it’s also great for fishing. The capital city Pape’ete has a good market.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Bora Bora, French Polynesia

We considered not going to Bora Bora as I thought it would just be expensive hotels for honeymooners. How wrong I was. It is such a beautiful island (as you can imagine) and there are plenty of things to do. Great diving, hikes, boat trips… it ended up being one of my favourite islands. It only has one beach – Matira – but it’s a gorgeous one.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Read our two week French Polynesia itinerary

Huahine, French Polynesia

Huahine is actually two islands, joined by a small bridge. We stayed on the southern island at a lovely beach called Avea which is a short walk from a Marae (Polynesian ancient temple). Huahine has one of the highest concentrations of Marae in the whole of French Polynesia. The snorkelling is excellent here, best experienced on lagoon cruise which takes you to different locations around the islands, as well as to a pearl farm, ending with lunch on a motu – (a small sand/reef islet).

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Taha’a, French Polynesia

Taha’a doesn’t have an airport, so you have to fly into neighbouring Raiatea, and take a boat to Taha’a. The island is famous for two things: vanilla and black pearls. We visited farms producing both during our stay, and there are quite a few options across the island. There is excellent snorkelling on Taha’a too, in particular at Motu Tautau off the west coast. This can only be reached by boat, or by foot for guests staying at Le Taha’a Island Resort and Spa , which we were lucky enough to stay at, as I was reviewing the hotel for The Telegraph .

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Rangiroa, French Polynesia

If I had to pick a favourite island from our trip to the South Pacific, then it would most likely be Rangiroa. It’s an atoll with an enormous lagoon and it is stunning. It has some of the best dive sites in the world including the Tiputa Pass, where you can see a huge variety of sharks, fish, dolphins and rays. It’s an amazing dive . If you cross the atoll from the main town of Avatoru, you will reach the blue lagoon, which is possibly the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to. It’s just incredible. You can also see lots of little blacktip reef sharks here too. (Don’t worry they aren’t scary!). Rangiroa is also another big pearl producer and even has a school dedicated to all aspects of black pearls – the only one of its kind. Read our guide to Rangiroa .

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Tikehau, French Polynesia

Another atoll in the Tuamotu Archipelago along with Rangiroa, Tikeahau is a quieter island famous for pink coral beaches. There is a great chance of spotting Manta Rays in Tikehau’s lagoon, which visit the same spot each morning to be cleaned by wrasses. This is really the place to come to get away from it all.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Rarotonga is the international hub for the Cook Islands, with lots of accommodation – even hostels, and good restaurants and bars. I would say it’s the cheapest island we visited in the South Pacific (unless you’re only staying in beach fales – then Upolu/Savai’i probably wins). It has some beautiful white sand beaches and a couple of good hikes through the centre.

Read our 10 day Cook Islands itinerary.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Aitutaki, Cook Islands

Aitutaki is home to a magnificent blue lagoon, and for this reason alone it’s worth a visit. The water visibility is excellent and you’ve got a very good chance of spotting and swimming with Giant Trevally, which live in the lagoon. There are lots of little sand motu (islands), which can be visited by boat. It’s paradise. In fact, it’s on two of these motu that Shipwrecked is filmed!

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

South Pacific Trip Budget

Once we had decided on our route, we had to work out if we could actually afford to do it. I will be completely honest here – the South Pacific is one of the most expensive destinations in the world and everything is pricey – flights, food and accommodation.

As we were writing about the destinations we had some support from the Tourist Boards which helped a lot, but even so, we had to carefully evaluate if our budget would cover the trip, and if so, would we spend all of our money and have to go straight home afterwards (as we were planning to travel for another 3 months).

After some careful calculations, we ascertained that we could manage it, but we had to stick to a strict budget, choose cheap accommodation and cook for ourselves where possible.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

In my opinion, the reason to visit the South Pacific is to experience the marine life and culture. So we wanted to spend as much of our budget on experiences as possible, and less on accommodation and food. If it’s your honeymoon you might have a different view, but really you can stay in nice hotels anywhere, what you can’t do is dive with sharks, snorkel with turtles and watch Polynesian dancing.

South Pacific Accommodation

Samoa accommodation.

The cheapest accommodation in Samoa is beach fales. These are huts with thatch roofs and open walls. They are basic with shared bathrooms, but they are amazing. You can hear the waves lapping on the beach while you sleep and it’s a very traditional Samoan experience. Often a night at a beach fale includes dinner and breakfast, which means you save on your food budget too. We stayed at beach fales for around 80 WST a night including breakfast and dinner (approx. £25). If you have a bit more money to spare there are some lovely places to stay, particularly on the south coast of Upolu.

French Polynesia Accommodation

Everyone dreams of an overwater bungalow in Bora Bora, but the reality is that they cost a lot. I mean a lot. (usually around £500 per night and up!!). So that wasn’t going to be an option for us on this trip. However, we found some great budget accommodation in French Polynesia. While still not super cheap, we stayed at B&Bs and guesthouses , many with kitchens where we could cook our own meals. This saved us a lot of money and we were still able to enjoy the incredible beaches and marine life a few steps away. We did stay at some more high-end places too, our favourites were Kia Ora in Rangiroa and family-run Relais Royal in Tikehau.

Cook Islands Accommodation

The Cook Islands has more budget options than French Polynesia and there are a couple of hostels on Rarotonga if you’re up for staying in a dorm. We found a few good options including Rarotonga Backpackers and Club Raro Resort . These both had a kitchen which was great for cooking our own food.

On Aitutaki, there are also some nice budget options with kitchens – we loved Rino’s Motel which was right on the water. For a little luxury, Tamanu Beach is incredible. We could literally see the ocean from our bed!

Food in The South Pacific

There is delicious fruit and veg in the Pacific Islands, which you can buy from roadside stalls and the local markets. In most places, it’s best not to drink tap water, but lots of hotels filter their own water or you can travel with a filter water bottle to avoid buying too many plastic water bottles. We saved money by buying super noodles and instant soup before we travelled and eating these in our hotel (glamorous I know). This saved us a lot of money on food, and while it isn’t exactly nutritious it’s fine as long as you aren’t doing it for every meal.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Food in Samoa

As mentioned before, beach fales often include dinner and breakfast which helps the budget a lot. There is excellent fish, and a must-try dish is Oka – raw fish with lime juice and coconut cream. It’s delicious. There is coconut with everything – to drink, in desserts, in main courses. Another traditional dish is palusami – taro leaves filled with coconut cream. Yum. If you’re in Samoa on a Sunday, then many restaurants will be serving a tonai. A traditional Samoan Sunday lunch that includes all the regional specialities.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Food in French Polynesia

Being French, you can buy lots of French food in French Polynesia. It’s basically the dream – tropical beaches and French cheese and wine. We found some great options in the supermarket in Tahiti, but once you get out to the more remote French Polynesian islands you’ll find less variety for a higher price. There is really good fish here too, and there is a similar dish to Oka called Poisson Cru made from the same ingredients.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

Food in The Cook Islands

The Cook Islands also have good fish including Mahi Mahi (our favourite). Their version of Oka/Poisson Cru is called Ika Mata. Coconut is a staple in Cook Islands’ food and the tree is known as the ‘tree of life’ as it is used for everything from food and drink, to building houses. Supermarkets are expensive, and if you want to eat out cheaply then there aren’t many options aside from burgers, of which there are a lot. A stand out on Rarotonga was The Mooring Fish Café for delicious fish sandwiches.

Booking in Advance

I strongly recommend you book your flights and accommodation in advance whilst South Pacific island hopping. The flights will only become more expensive, and even if you have the Air Tahiti Island pass, the flights do get sold out. With accommodation, you can be a little bit more relaxed depending on the location. If you’ve booked your flights for French Polynesia then it also makes sense to have your accommodation booked. We booked everything at least a few months ahead of time. In Samoa and the Cook Islands, you can be a little more flexible. In particular in Samoa, because you don’t need to book the ferry, though it is recommended if you’re travelling peak season, and some of the beach fales don’t take bookings, and many don’t have websites.

A Lovely Planet - South Pacific Island Hopping - Hayley Lewis

The South Pacific was easily the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to. The beaches are on another level and the marine life was incredible. We had the most amazing time exploring Samoa, French Polynesia and the Cook Islands and each has something different to offer. I would recommend all three. We are also keen to return and explore some of the other Pacific islands, so at some point, another South Pacific island hopping trip will be on the agenda!

It really was! Wish I could do it all over again!

Great article! Came across it whilst starting to plan a South Pacific island hopping extravaganza for my husband and myself. Lots of useful information, thanks!

Thank you! I’m glad it was useful 🙂 I hope you have a great trip, it’s such a beautiful part of the world.

H guys The best review/ blog I have ever read. It’s my ambition to go in this part of the world, is more expensive that say London to eat out

Thank you 🙂 If you eat at hotels then it can be pretty expensive – probably more than London. However, if you eat at local places then you can find some cheap options.

In 2001 and 2002 I got a flight from England to New Zealand with stops at French Polynesia and the Cook Islands on the way there. Plus on my way home I stopped in Samoa. I missed out on seeing Tonga. I am keen to see more of the islands. I went to Hawaii and Fiji in 1993. I have been back to Hawaii once since then.

That sounds like a great trip. I’m also really keen to visit Tonga. We are hoping to travel to Vanuatu once the borders open. Hawaii is so beautiful – I went there for my 30th!

Wow just loved this. Best I have seen. Always wanted to go there for a few months. Maybe maybe

Thank you. I highly recommend it – such a beautiful part of the world.

Thanks for sharing your voyage. It was so beautiful. I am hoping I can travel to at least a few of these paradise islands.

Thank you. I hope you can too!

Some great ways explain how they can identify the right travel agent for tourism to avoid future problems. Along with this, there are reasons presented why it is necessary. I guess this can be helpful.

Hi, planning a world trip with a difference!! But on my itinerary are the pacific islands. Excellent blog. Really enjoyed it. Just wondering if you can specify how you travelled from island to island? Are there any boats rather than flying in and out of NZ? These are the islands I wish to visit: Tonga, Fiji, Somoa, Cook and Tahiti flying in NZ or Aus

Thank you! I have included a section on getting around and between the islands here: https://www.alovelyplanet.com/south-pacific-island-hopping/#How_to_Island_Hop_in_The_South_Pacific . They all vary. Skyscanner is a pretty handy tool when looking at flights – I use the ‘everywhere’ destination option to see what direct flights are available from each destination. For example, from Fiji there are direct flights to Samoa and Tonga, so you could organise to do those together. You may still have to do one or two connections via NZ. Hope you have a great trip – it sounds amazing!

' src=

Hello! Thanks for the great post. I’m curious what was your budget? You didn’t mention it.

Thanks! Kiera

Hi Kiera, our budget varied depending on the location. It was easy to eat cheaply in the Cook Islands and accommodation is more affordable than say Bora Bora. So it really depended on where we were. We aimed for accommodation around $100-200 USD per night with a few luxury stays here and there. Plus we were also hosted at a few places. Sorry that’s not the most helpful I know. The more remote the island the harder it is to find groceries etc and generally the more costly things are.

' src=

Hi, I loved your post! Could you give an estimate of what you could spend in a two week trip? Approximate?

Thank you!! Idoua

Glad you liked it 🙂 It really depends on what level of accommodation you stay in and how many islands/places to visit. The luxury resorts are expensive, but there are reasonable guest houses and cheap places to eat/food from the supermarket. So it’s really hard to give an estimate. Sorry – I hope that helps!

Escorted & Package Tours in South Pacific

Packages for the Independent Traveler

In addition to searching for the lowest airfare, you may want to consider booking your flight as part of a travel package. Buying a package is a way to get the airfare, accommodations, and other elements of your trip (such as car rentals, airport transfers, and even meals and activities) at the same time and often at discounted prices -- kind of like one-stop shopping. In fact, package tours usually provide the best bargains, especially to expensive French Polynesia.

Package tours are not the same thing as escorted tours, which are structured tours with a group leader. Few escorted tours go to the South Pacific islands except as add-ons to tours primarily of Australia and New Zealand.

The costs are kept down because wholesale tour operators (known as wholesalers in the travel industry) can make volume bookings on the airlines and at the hotels. Packages traditionally were then sold through retail travel agents, but many wholesalers now deal directly with the public, thus passing savings along to you, rather than part of their commissions to retail agents.

Travel packages are listed in the travel section of many Sunday newspapers. Or check ads in magazines such as Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel Magazine, Travel & Leisure, National Geographic Traveler, and Condé Nast Traveler.

Airlines frequently offer air-and-hotel packages, so check the Web sites of Air New Zealand (www.airnewzealand.com/vacations) Air Pacific (www.airpacific.com), Air Tahiti Nui (www.airtahitinui.com), Qantas Airlines www.qantasvacations.com), and the other South Pacific carriers.

Some local tourism information offices have information about agencies selling packages to their countries. For example, Tahiti Tourisme provides links to many money-saving packages to French Polynesia on its North American website (www.tahiti-tourisme.com).

Ask Before You Go -- Before you invest in a package deal or an escorted tour:

  • Always ask about the cancellation policy. Can you get your money back? Is there a deposit required?
  • Ask about the accommodations choices and prices for each. Then look up the hotels' reviews in a Frommer's guide and check their rates online for your specific dates of travel. Also find out what types of rooms are offered.
  • Discuss what is included in the price (transportation, meals, tips, airport transfers, and so on).
  • Finally, look for hidden expenses. Ask whether airport departure fees and taxes, for example, are included in the total cost -- they rarely are.

International Tour Agents -- Following in alphabetical order are some reputable American-based companies selling package tours. Some will discount air tickets and hotel rooms separately; that is, not as part of a package. Be sure to shop for the best deal among them.

  • Journey Pacific (tel. 800/704-7094; www.journeypacific.com) is a Las Vegas-based agency offering packages to all of the islands.
  • Sunspots International (tel. 800/334-5623 or 503/666-3893; www.sunspotsintl.com), based in Portland, Oregon, has trips to all the islands. It has particular expertise in the Cook Islands, Samoa, and Tonga.
  • Travelwizard (tel. 800/330-8820; www.travelwizard.com) specializes in designing luxury travel packages to all the islands but also has less expensive offerings. It also has adventure, diving, and surfing trips to Fiji and French Polynesia.

Other companies have adventure travel packages combining outdoor activities with accommodations.

Local Tour Operators -- Another tactic is to check with the South Pacific inbound tour operators. These companies are in the islands and usually put together the local elements of tour packages such as hotel rooms and airport transfers. They have the advantage of being on the scene and thus familiar with the local airlines and hotels. Some sell directly to inbound visitors as well as other tour companies.

In Fiji, two small companies specialize in discount travel arrangements: Impulse Fiji (tel. 800/953-7595 in the U.S.; 672-0600 in Fiji; www.impulsefiji.com) and Sun Vacations (tel. 672-4273 in Fiji; www.sunvacationsfiji.com).

In French Polynesia, Tahiti Nui Travel (tel. 46.40.10 in Tahiti; www.tahitinuitravel.com) has a variety of local packages, while True Tahiti Vacations (tel. 310/464-1490 in the U.S.; www.truetahitivacation.com) is operated by American-born Laurel Samuela, who lives on Moorea.

In the Cook Islands, Island Hopper Vacations (tel. 22-026 in Rarotonga; www.islandhoppervacations.com) books hotels and puts together local packages, as does Jetsave Travel (tel. 27-707 in Rarotonga; www.jetsave.co.ck), which is owned by American ex-pat Malynnda Morrisette, who lives in the Cooks.

Oceania Travel & Tours is good in Samoa (tel. 24-443 in Apia, inside the Hotel Kitano in Tusatala.

In Tonga, I highly recommend Pacific Travel Marketing (tel. 28-304; [email protected]) for both hotel and airline reservations.

Escorted General-Interest Tours

Escorted tours are structured group tours, with a group leader (I prefer the old-fashioned term "tour guide"). The price usually includes everything from airfare to hotels, meals, tours, admission costs, and local transportation.

Escorted tours are not a big part of the business in these small islands, where it's easy to find your way around and book local tours and activities. Most of the travel agents I mention under "Packages for the Independent Traveler," above, will have someone meet and greet you at the airport upon arrival, take you to your hotel, and make sure you get on any prearranged tours and activities, but you will not have a tour guide.

Some tour companies add a short stop-over in Fiji or Tahiti to their escorted tours of Australia and New Zealand, but these may not include a guide for the island portion. Leaders in this add-on feature include Tauck Tours (tel. 800/788-7885; www.tauck.com), Qantas Vacations (tel. 800/641-8772; www.qantasvacations.com), Australia Escorted Tours (tel. 888/333-6607; www.australia-escorted-tours.com), and Abercrombie & Kent (tel. 800/652-7986; www.abercrombiekent.com), which adds Fiji and French Polynesia to its high-end escorted tours. Otherwise, I recommend getting a travel agent to track down an escorted tour.

Despite the fact that escorted tours require big deposits and predetermine hotels, restaurants, and itineraries, many people derive security and peace of mind from the structure they offer. Escorted tours let travelers sit back and enjoy the trip without having to drive or worry about details. They're convenient for people with limited mobility and they can be a great way to make new friends.

On the downside, you'll have little opportunity for serendipitous interactions with locals. The tours can be jam-packed with activities, leaving little room for individual sightseeing, whim, or adventure -- plus they often focus on the heavily touristed sites, so you miss out on many a lesser-known gem.

Special-Interest Trips

Although outdoor activities take first place in the islands, you can also spend your time learning a new craft, exploring the reefs as part of a conservation project, and whale- and dolphin-watching.

Bird-Watching -- Avid bird-watchers are likely to see terns, boobies, herons, petrols, noddies, and many other seabirds throughout the islands. French Polynesia alone has 28 species of breeding seabirds, making memorable a visit to Motu Puarua and Motu Oeone, tiny islets out in Tikihau's lagoon, where noddies and snowy white fairy terns nest.

The number and variety of land birds diminishes as you go eastward. Most live in the bush away from settlements and the accompanying cats, dogs, and rats, so you will need to head into the bush for the best watching.

With 26 endemic species, Fiji has more diversity than the other island countries. Many are on display in Kula Eco Park (tel. 650-0505; www.fijiwild.com), on Fiji's Coral Coast. Taveuni island is best for watching in Fiji, with more than 100 species including the rare orange dove, which lives high on Des Veoux Peak. Savusavu on Vanua Levu is also good, especially the nearby Waisali Rainforest Reserve. Daku Resort in Savusavu (tel. 885-0046; www.dakuresort.com) hosts bird-watching tours hosted by veteran Fiji watcher Robin Mercer.

In French Polynesia, Société d'Ornithologie de Polynésie (Ornithological Society of Polynesia; tel. 50.62.09; www.manu.pf) lists local birds on its website.

In the Cook Islands, the Takitumu Conservation Area on Rarotonga is home to the rare kakeroi, which has recovered from near-extinction status.

A few companies have bird-watching tours to the South Pacific, including the U.K.-based Bird Quest (tel. 44/1254-826317; www.birdquest.co.uk) and Birdwatching Breaks (tel. 44/1381-610495; www.birdwatchingbreaks.com).

Educational Courses -- In addition to bird-watching, Daku Resort, in northern Fiji (tel. 885-0046; www.dakuresort.com) hosts weeklong courses in such subjects as novel writing, sketching, painting, quilting, and gospel singing. The courses are organized by creative-writing teacher Delia Rothnie-Jones (she and husband John own the resort). They have special package rates for the courses and will help you arrange air transportation to Fiji.

Ecotravel Tours -- The Oceanic Society (tel. 800/326-7491; www.oceanicsociety.org), an award-winning organization based in California, has natural history and ecotourism expeditions to the islands. A naturalist accompanies its annual 11-day snorkeling trip to the pristine reefs off Taveuni and Namena islands in northern Fiji. The trip includes village visits and bird-watching.

Seacology (tel. 510/559-3505; www.seacology.org), a California-based organization dedicated to preserving island cultures and environments, has an annual trip to Jean-Michel Cousteau Fiji Islands Resort and occasionally to Samoa.

Fiji Adventures (tel. 888/418-4461; www.fijiadventures.com) offers several packages, one of which combines several cultural activities offered in Fiji such as river rafting, cave and waterfall visits, and a trip into Viti Levu's interior. The packages do not include airfare, but they save you from having to arrange each activity after you arrive in Fiji.

Formerly known as Tui Tai Adventure Cruises, environmentally and culturally friendly Active Fiji (www.tuitai.com, or www.activefiji.com) uses a 140-foot sailing schooner to explore out-of-the-way islands in northern Fiji. The boat goes to Fijian villages and carries bikes as well snorkeling and diving gear.

Based in London but with an office in the U.S., the nonprofit Greenforce (tel. 0207/470-8888 in London, 740/416-4016 in the U.S.; www.greenforce.org) sends expeditions to help survey Fiji's coral reefs for the World Conservation Society. They'll even teach you to dive while you're there. The trips last from 6 to 10 weeks. Check the website for prices.

Whale- & Dolphin-Watching -- Whale- and dolphin-watching are popular activities throughout the South Pacific. Dolphins live here year-round, and humpback whales escape the cold of Antarctica and spend from July until October giving birth to their calves in the tropical South Pacific. They can be seen swimming off many islands, but the prime whale-watching venue is off Vava'u, in Tonga, where you can actually swim in the water alongside these magnificent mammals. Several companies on Vava'u will organize visits.

The California-based Oceanic Society (tel. 800/326-7491; www.oceanicsociety.org) has 1-week whale-watching trips to Tonga in September. Cost is about US$3,000 per person. You must be experienced snorkeler to swim with the whales.

The best dolphin-watching experiences are on Moorea in French Polynesia, where American marine biologist Dr. Michael Poole leads daylong excursions to visit some of the 150 spinner dolphins he has identified as regular residents. Honeymooners love to have their pictures taken while swimming with the intelligent mammals in a fenced-in area at Moorea Dolphin Center, at the Inter-Continental Resort & Spa Moorea.

Slide title

"We had Michelle plan a dream trip for us to New Zealand and Australia. The trip she planned for us was beyond what we expected; a well laid out itinerary, great accommodation, and lots of information on the places we were going to see. A week into our trip the corona virus pandemic was declared, and we knew we had to make our way home. If it wasn’t for Michelle working to get us on flights back to Canada, our return would have been that much more stressful. She maintained contact with us, reassured us and dealt with the airlines. Without Michelle, trying to get back home on our own would have been difficult and stressful. She also worked hard to get us refunds for the lost portion of our trip. When travel restrictions are lifted we will travel again and definitely be using Michelle to help us plan our return trip down under".

"It was very easy to work with Michelle. After an initial in person meeting to discuss our interests she provided a first draft of a detailed itinerary. From there we made changes jointly with Michelle over the phone and by email. She was patient, very accommodating and extremely knowledgeable, making the whole process enjoyable and stress free. When the final itinerary was confirmed we met in person where she walked us through the entire seven week trip. The end result was definitely our trip of a lifetime to New Zealand and Australia. We were taken care of from start to finish, it was completely worry free with no detail left undone. I would highly recommend her for your trip of a lifetime."

"Based on our identified priorities of enjoying Wildlife, Geography, Culture, and History, Michelle put together an eight week itinerary in Australia and New Zealand that exceeded our expectations. We experienced the following wildlife in their natural habitats: kangaroo, wombats, koalas, emu, seals and sea lions, tuna farms and the fishing industry, dolphins and whales, exotic birds, kiwi, deer and elk farms, albatross and penguins. We enjoyed panoramic vistas at every turn. Michelle put together a complex itinerary that included planes, trains, automobile, boats, ferries and even gondolas. Our accommodations were fantastic wherever we stayed and largely due to the excellent working relationship between Michelle and the people she works with in Australia and New Zealand, our entire adventure ran smooth and timely."

"Michelle was a joy to work with, always available to answer our many questions and offer reassurance when necessary (ex: the Australian fires). Every arrangement that she handled, from the numerous flights to the many different accommodations and tours, came and went without a single hitch or surprise. When it comes to Australia and New Zealand, she knows her product as well as the locals. She has a good feel for what makes a good fit and is of good value, always placing us in central, accessible locations in each town or city. The small group tours that she found for us were a special treat; we were never more than 6-10 persons which makes a huge difference in comfort."

"Having Michelle help us with our 3 plus month trip to Australia was one of the best decisions we made. We started planning over a year out and, with her assistance drafting various itineraries for us based upon our expressed preferences, our trip exceeded our expectations. Michelle helped us book affordable flight, car rental and accommodation choices that met our budget and hoped-for experiences. There was no pressure to pre-book tours or attractions, but instead, she provided us with suggested experiences for the multitude of locations we went to allowing us to truly make it our trip at our pace. Overall, we felt we got the most value and enjoyment out of our trip thanks to Michelle’s help. It was joy working with her!"

"Michelle booked a fantastic trip for 9 ppl to Thailand over Christmas and New Years. Time in Koh Samui and Bangkok including flights – great resorts and hotels (including Banyan Tree in Bangkok) – all transfers and private tours. We appreciated Michelle’s attention to detail and quick responses – the trip was amazing – and we would highly recommend Michelle".

"WOW – that is all I can say about the trip that Michelle prepared for us. We travelled to Australia in February with our daughter who was studying at the University of South Australia. We stayed in Adelaide for a week and then onto our “trip of a lifetime” to the French Polynesia. All we wanted was to stay in a hut over the water but Michelle took it one step further and organized several day trips which made the experience so much more. Thinking of this trip still puts a smile our faces.  If you are looking for that “trip of a lifetime” Michelle is the travel agent you will want to contact. She was instrumental in helping our daughter get home during COVID.  Michelle stayed in touch with us until she was home safely.

"Michelle is an amazing travel agent! I have used her for all of my 5 trips to Australia and domestic trips as well. She knows her business inside and out. Always professional and very accommodating. She listens to what I want from my trip and then puts together an agenda that surpasses my expectations. She encouraged me to do a few things that I would not have tried and they have been the most rewarding experiences of my travels. Best example was the Sydney Bridge Climb. Spectacular! I was in Australia when Covid broke out and she went above and beyond the get me home! I HIGHLY recommend her for all your travel needs!"

"In January 2020 after the brilliant and careful planning by Michelle, we ventured to Kenya and Uganda for what turned out to be a fantastic experience.  Our trip was seamless, we were treated with respect and enjoyed highly professional Guides at each and every location.  This is what we have come to expect when Michelle orchestrates our adventures, regardless of destination.  She spends the time to assess our needs, goals, interests and travel style - and then adapts the trip accordingly.  She makes it a very high priority to gain as much knowledge of where she will be sending us as possible, before presenting the details for us to make our final decisions."

"Michelle Streicher at South Pacific Journeys: Trustworthy, Talented, Creative, Connected and Caring. When the pandemic hit during our trip of a lifetime to New Zealand, Michelle worked tirelessly to find us flights and help us leave New Zealand as it quickly closed borders. Michelle was able to reorganize existing reservations without any cost to us while others were scrambling to get on high priced alternate flights. Being in the travel business is less about booking things and more about knowing how to by-pass phone lines, wait times, cancelled flights and turn what could have been a nightmare into an adventure. We cannot say enough about her caring commitment to clients. We highly recommend her and would never go on another trip without her guidance."

"I attended a info night that Michelle hosted and l was hooked on her professionalism and her knowledge of the South Pacific. I made an appointment and l went over what l was looking to see in Australia regarding flights, wildlife and hotels and of course the Great Barrier Reef. She put a plan that totally met all my wishes and was laid in the booklet for day to day, telephone numbers what we were doing each day and this not only include tours but the hotels. Gave suggestions on where to eat and what we could see on our own time. I would use her services again as l know that l will receive nothing but the best. I would recommend Michelle travel services to anyone 100 %."

"It was a chance conversation with some fellow travellers on a short trip that we heard of Michelle and her professionalism and knowledge of travel in general and Australia in particular. When we met with her, there was no question that the recommendation was correct and she was who we wanted to assist us on a dream trip to Australia. With her advice, we added New Zealand, French Polynesia before ending in Hawaii from where we flew home. The entire itinerary was both thorough and made for us. In the planning, Michelle made great suggestions and, when we followed through with them, we realized just how much knowledge and research she brings to her work.

When South Africa came to the top of our bucket list, it was again to Michelle that we turned. We certainly recommend Michelle and South Pacific Journeys."

"Michelle asked the right questions and listened to the answers. She is knowledgeable about travel and about designing adventures that suit travellers' goals. Travel to Australasia is a significant commitment in dollars and time and Michelle made both into investments rather than expenditures."

"michelle was amazing from the very first time we met her. she knows her destinations from top to bottom. we spent time reading and getting suggestions from friends as to what to see and she gave us her recommendations and her personal experiences. we made our decisions and she booked absolutely every site just as we requested. the trip went exactly as we had wished. we were met at every destination by staff who were expecting us, on time, and welcoming. if this sounds too good to be true, our trip was actually this good. you could do no better than michelle to book your next trip.", "we recently had an opportunity to attend a professional convention in melbourne. since neither my wife or i knew anything about australia, we relied on michelle to help us with our itinerary and make the most of our 3 weeks in australia. in a pre-trip meeting, michelle gave us many options regarding excursions and hotels that not only met our timetable but were attractive to our wants allowing us to tailor make our trip. i am so indebted to michelle who insisted that we do the sydney bridge climb. it was awesome. michelle handled all the limo transfers, air tickets, hotels and excursions which all went off without a hitch. my wife’s dream was to spend a week in bora bora and it was michelle’s excellent suggest to end the trip here, to make it all a memorable experience. thanks for everything michelle", "just amazing this lady listened to all we wanted and delivered i have over the years amassed a few friends in the down under countries and wanted to see them as well as relatives and visit much heard of tourist areas. with infinite patience, michelle altered our agenda when we discovered that one set of friends would be away at the time we proposed to be in their area. thankfully we needed visas for australia and we discovered that my passport was running out under this new rule just four months after our return trip date. quick trip to whitby got that in order i told michelle the dollars we had to spend on this trip and she kept fairly close to the amount whilst getting us where we wanted to be and seeing all we wanted to see. when michelle was contacted by a tour operator as we had not called in to verify attendance she messaged me. but i had called maybe shortly after the initial call and all was well. just two tours didn't happen as planned. hopeful for refunds well done", "we had a fabulous 10 days on the island of tasmania. michelle listened to what we felt we wanted to get out of our time there and then put together a great tour of the island. she suggested activities for us and we picked what we wanted and she organized a wonderful tour of the island hitting the high spots and getting us great accommodations. we loved the salamanca markets. i think our favourite spot was strahan and the amazing activities available there. this is our 4th trip with michelle and each one has exceeded our expectations. we are thinking the perth area next time thank you michelle", "we recently returned from a month-long trip to australia and new zealand. our travels took us from the southern tip of new zealand to northern australia and many places in between. we saw plenty of beautiful sights and the experiences we shared were outstanding. this was made so much easier with the advice and assistance provided by michelle streicher. her recommendations about where to go and what to do were perfect and contributed to a memorable holiday. the arrangements, for flights, airport transfers, hotels and guided tours all went like clockwork. we had no worries and lots of fun. our thanks to michelle for making the trip such a great success.", "we would like to take this opportunity to share our experiences working with michelle. when we decided to plan our adventure, we had many questions about australia and new zealand. we presented michelle with our wish list and budget and within a few days she had options for us to choose from to achieve a fantastic experience. michelle is very knowledgeable and a pleasure to work with. she helped guide us through all of our concerns. we highly recommend michelle’s services for anyone who wishes to visit downunder.".

My husband and I highly recommend Michelle Streicher of South Pacific Journeys for your Future travel plans when we come out of this current Pandemic.

We have used her services twice 1) Australia and New Zealand in 2015 which is her specialty, and we spent a month traveling with a customized itinerary, we couldn’t have asked for better trip.

2) India in 2017 and again we were well looked after.

We have depended on Michelle’s expertise and professionalism for several of our ‘bucket list’ trips, including Australia, New Zealand, Kenya, Uganda and others. Each time, our planning begins with Michelle exploring our interests and our preferred style/approach to travel and budget. Our approach depends on our interests and the best fit for our interests. Without exception, Michelle has delivered seamless and well thought through journeys for Karen and I. In every country we have visited, it has been very clear that Michelle has developed professional and well respected working relationships with international representatives through their respective companies. She researches and takes pride in working with well respected people abroad, who deliver. We have always been very comfortable and confident when starting the adventures, largely due to the diligence and thoroughness of Michelle’s preparation. Her passion is mostly driven by her desire for her clients, like us, to have the trip of a lifetime. In our case, trips! We would highly and without reservation recommend Michelle to anyone interested in traveling abroad to anywhere within her portfolio.
