My husband and I went on the free walking tour give by AJ (Andre) and it was truly amazing. It was a great way to get associated with the city and we learned so much about the culture and history of Barcelona. AJ was incredibly knowledgeable, quick and engaging! The free tour was so good that we booked another tour, the Gaudi and Modernism architecture tour. This was well worth the money! We learned so much about the amazing structures that make up this city. I highly recommend this company, especially with AJ's guidance!

We took the free Sandemans tour in Barcelona which was a great experience. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and we learned a lot about Barcelona's history. The tour lasted 2 hours which was nice. Would recommend Sandemans tours.

Brendan Grant was a brilliant and fantastic tour guide. We tremendously enjoyed our three hours with him and his account of Barcelona history. Must do for anyone visiting Barcelona.

I love Sandeman's waking tours. They're always super good. I went on a walking tour with Filipa, and I'm pretty sure I had her when she was doing walking tours in Paris. Anyway, I learned a lot on the two and a half hour tour, and honestly, it's not that much walking. It's also very entertaining! I love these walking tours, highly recommend! At the end, you decide how much the tour is worth to you and tip the tour guide. Just to let you know, all the tour guides are contractors and Sandeman's the company takes 3€ per person from the tour guide, so take that into account when you tip. Doing the walking tours is most of these tour guides' job, so keep that in mind too. No, I do not work for Sandeman's or anything, but I've been on more than half of the tours they offer in Europe, and I have never been disappointed. Definitely recommend, you'll have a better understanding of Barcelona afterward.

Patrick was great. Engaging, energetic, extremely knowledgeable. It was my last day in Barcelona and I thought I'd see the best parts. I was wrong! This tour was one of the best parts of my trip. (The other best part was the pinchos at Irati).

We had a tour with Leon and it was very good because he was extremely funny. I highly recommend him in the store.

FANTASTIC! We did 2 of their tours: the free Walking Tour of Barcelona, and the 12 Euro Walking Art tour: Gaudi and the Modernistes. Different guides but both EXCELLENT! Both guides were Brits, spoke rapidly so might be harder for non-native English speakers. But both were so energetic, so knowledgeable and so entertaining, they made Barcelona come alive for us. The free Walking tour took the group thru areas around Las Ramblas, largely thru the Bario Gotico mazes, pointing out artistic and architectural items of interest all over; tour lasted about 3 hours. The next day we came back for the Walking Art tour, which discussed Gaudi and several other Catalan architects and their works near Las Ramblas. This tour also went 3 hours, ended in front of Sagrada Familia after taking a brief Metro ride from Pasaig de la Gracia. Our guide, Leon, pointed out tiles mounted above store fronts in the Bario area that told what the merchant there did: baker, tailor, butcher, lamplighter, etc; also the tiles on the plaza designed by Gaudi that formed intricate patterns when you stopped to look at them. We would never have spotted these on our own. These and other details they pointed out and discussed added sooo much to our appreciation of Barcelona. The guides tell you they make their living on the tips, even on the paid 12 Euro tour, so we tipped each 10 Euro for each of us, 20 Euros total to each guide And they were worth every penny. They were simply EXCELLENT presenters and leaders. I can't recommend these tour opportunities highly enough. We are now going to look for walking tours in all the cities we visit in the future. If you try these tours in Barcelona, our guides were Leon and Andrew. You will not be disappointed, guaranteed.

Cristina was wonderful- patient, professional, super knowledgable and full of positive energy. We loved the modernism tour! Highly recommended!

Sandeman's is great!! I love these tours I have done the one in Barcelona twice and one in Paris and I am always pleased. This trip was no different. We had Joe who is from England and he was awesome!! He studies nationalism so as you can imagine he knew a lot about Barcelona. He was very informative and funny! We did the free tour and we liked him so much we did the Gaudi tour as well. Again, he was informative and intriguing. He really enjoys what he does and you can tell. If you get the chance ask for Joe and when I return I will ask for him again!

Photo of Emily C.

Brendan was a wonderful guide. Very informative, entertaining, and clearly has a love for Barcelona. We would definitely recommend his tours!

Brendon is an excellent tour guide, even though he is from Ireland he has a passion and good knowledge of Spanish history. It was a great way to see parts of Barcelona that aren't even mentioned in the guide books. Even though the tours was 3 hours and we seemed to have walked along way I was amazed at how quick it was to get back to the start. So many interesting spots in such a small area.

Our tour guide Brendan was really great. He gave us a fantastic overview of the long as diverse history of Barcelona and made some excellent suggestions for activities to do while we stayed. We really enjoyed the tour and would recommend it to anyone going to Barcelona. It's a great way to start a stay in a city.

Very friendly and entertaining, learned a lot about Barcelona and it’s past while listening to Claire :)

Our guide was Sybille and she was great! Very enthusiastic and knowledgeable. We had a fantastic time getting to know more about Barcelona, especially the Gothic Quarter. Thank you Sybille!

We are a family of 7 - ages 9 to 71 and we all loved this tour guided by the magnificent Billy! She was fascinating, knowledgeable, funny & charming. Great experience that we will all remember forever!

I did this tour with a British guy named Leon who was totally over qualified. He knew everything!some people were overwhelmed by the history and information so if you want to take it easy I wouldn't recommend it. BUT I like to learn as much as possible so it was perfect for me. Also check out his forbidden tour! Thanks leon

Sandeman’s New Europe

Starting just off Via Laietana in the very centre of town, Sandeman’s New Europe free tour of Barcelona takes you on a whistle-stop tour of the city’s history. From Barcelona’s legendary founding (was Hercules really responsible?) and the Spanish Civil War to the birth of the modern independence movement and the 1992 Olympic Games, this guide will give you the historical context to the modern city we know and love today. The 2.5-hour tour runs five times a day and starts by the exit of Jaume I Metro station. The route is wheelchair-accessible.

Runner Bean Tours

Runner Bean Tours offers two free tours, so there’s something for everyone here. One tour has you covered for the history of the Gothic Quarter , while the second, the Runner Bean free Gaudí tour , gives you the lowdown on one of Barcelona’s most famous architects. You’ll find out what defined the movement known as Catalan Modernism and how Antoni Gaudí became one of its most important members. The guide will also take you past some of his most important buildings, including the world-famous Sagrada Família . The tour departs every day from the water fountain at Plaça Reial at 11am and 4.30pm during the summer and at 11am during the winter. The 2.5-hour journey includes a couple of trips on the Metro to reduce walking, so be sure to bring some change.

Feel Free Tours

There are two routes to choose from with Feel Free Tours: the Old Town Tour of Barcelona and the Gaudí Modernism Walking Route . As well as showcasing the masterpieces of Antoni Gaudí, the Modernism route will take you past some other, often overlooked but exceptional work by fellow Modernist designers. It will also delve into the urban planning ideals of the 1856 Cerdà expansion plan that advocated (at the time) revolutionary ideas around hygiene and mobility, and eventually led to the building of the Eixample district – a must for anyone interested in the history of urban planning. Tours run every day of the week pretty much all year round, and last around 2.5 hours. Groups of no more than 15 people depart from in front of the Hard Rock Café in Plaça Catalunya.

The Gaudí Modernism Walking Route takes in buildings such as Casa Batlló

Travel Bar tours start and end at their own bar, just off Las Ramblas, near Liceu station. Grab a beer, cocktail or sangria and get to know your fellow group members before or after the tour. The two-hour free walking tour is another great general walk of Barcelona’s most impressive sights, with everything from historic architecture to street art to keep you engaged along the way. Tours are held daily and start at 11am, 1pm and 3pm, but despite their frequency, booking is essential.

Barcelona Street Style Tour

Barcelona is home to a thriving street-art scene , so the free walking tours from Barcelona Street Style are a must for fans of urban art. With two options on offer, covering either the El Born neighbourhood and the Gothic Quarter or the colourful district of El Raval , these tours showcase the best of the city’s contemporary city murals. Led by guides who are very knowledgeable about techniques and styles, as well as artists currently active on the local scene, these tours are a fabulous way to learn more about an art form that most of us see every day but may know little about. The El Born and Gothic quarter tour departs at 2pm each day, while the El Raval tour heads out at 10am and 4.45pm. Advance booking is a must.

Be Local Tours

The Spanish Civil War (1936–1939) was one of the most dramatic conflicts in the history of Barcelona, and one that still has resonance today. The Be Locals Tours Civil War Free Walking Tour takes you back in time to relive the dark days of the conflict and show you places and monuments still visibly scarred by the fighting. The guides illustrate the historical significance through old photographs and stories of how normal people lived during the war, which makes this an essential tour for anyone interested in this important period. The walk departs every Friday at 11am from Plaça Catalunya; booking online is highly recommended.

The Ruta del Modernisme

Fancy yourself as a tour guide? Well, the Ruta del Moderisme might just be for you. This self-guided tour winds through the city, and takes in more than 100 examples of Barcelona’s acclaimed take on Art Nouveau. The tour will introduce you to the works of Gaudí, Domènech i Montaner and Puig i Cadafalch, the architects who made Barcelona the world capital of Modernism. Points of interest on the route are marked by round red paving stones on the pavement. To keep this tour completely free, you can follow the route and read the descriptions of the buildings on the dedicated website . Alternatively, if you don’t mind spending a bit of money, the accompanying guidebook is €12 and gets you discounted entry to many of the sights along the way. You can buy the guidebook from the Güell Pavilions or the L’Institut Municipal del Paisatge Urbà.

KEEN TO EXPLORE THE WORLD?

Connect with like-minded people on our premium trips curated by local insiders and with care for the world

Since you are here, we would like to share our vision for the future of travel - and the direction Culture Trip is moving in.

Culture Trip launched in 2011 with a simple yet passionate mission: to inspire people to go beyond their boundaries and experience what makes a place, its people and its culture special and meaningful — and this is still in our DNA today. We are proud that, for more than a decade, millions like you have trusted our award-winning recommendations by people who deeply understand what makes certain places and communities so special.

Increasingly we believe the world needs more meaningful, real-life connections between curious travellers keen to explore the world in a more responsible way. That is why we have intensively curated a collection of premium small-group trips as an invitation to meet and connect with new, like-minded people for once-in-a-lifetime experiences in three categories: Culture Trips, Rail Trips and Private Trips. Our Trips are suitable for both solo travelers, couples and friends who want to explore the world together.

Culture Trips are deeply immersive 5 to 16 days itineraries, that combine authentic local experiences, exciting activities and 4-5* accommodation to look forward to at the end of each day. Our Rail Trips are our most planet-friendly itineraries that invite you to take the scenic route, relax whilst getting under the skin of a destination. Our Private Trips are fully tailored itineraries, curated by our Travel Experts specifically for you, your friends or your family.

We know that many of you worry about the environmental impact of travel and are looking for ways of expanding horizons in ways that do minimal harm - and may even bring benefits. We are committed to go as far as possible in curating our trips with care for the planet. That is why all of our trips are flightless in destination, fully carbon offset - and we have ambitious plans to be net zero in the very near future.
