‘He’s a big problem’: Golf ‘killer’ sends shivers down US spines amid No.1’s ‘miserable’ slide

Scottie Scheffler and Viktor Hovland

Viktor Hovland won the season-ending Tour Championship at East Lake on Monday (AEST), confirming himself as the hottest talent in men’s golf while earning an $18 million (A$28m) payday.

The 25-year-old, who came second at this year’s PGA Championship, converted a six-shot, 54-hole lead into a five-shot victory that also hands him the year’s FedEx Cup title.

Hovland entered the Tour Championship second in the rankings — he also won last week’s BMW Championship — which meant he started two shots behind the leading Scottie Scheffler.

Hovland blitzed the field over the first three rounds and held his nerve on the final day with four birdies in the first six holes, followed by nine-conscutive pars and three more birdies that gave him a final score of 27-under.

He is the third-youngest winner of the FedEx Cup, and is now fully exempt on the PGA Tour through the 2028 season.

Scheffler, meanwhile, has been left to rue the second-straight year of entering the Tour Championship as the season’s top player before failing to win the showpiece event.

Already fading at East Lake, Scheffler couldn’t mount a comeback on the final day and finished T6 at 11-under — only one shot better than where he started.

Earlier, Hovland’s lead was briefly shrunk to just three shots with Xander Schauffele making a charge around the turn, but the Norwegian refused to crumble and restored a big lead.

Schauffele finished second, five shots behind Hovland, while third was US Open winner Wyndham Clark at 16-under.

Completing the top five were Rory McIlroy and Patrick Cantlay, while the only Australian in the field, Jason Day, came 28th.

Hovland’s back-to-back wins in the FedEx Cup playoffs marks him as arguably the world’s best golfer at the moment, even if not ranked No.1 in the world.

And with the Ryder Cup around the corner, the Americans have every reason to be worried about Europe’s chances this year.

“Viktor Hovland is going to be a problem at the Ryder Cup. A big, big problem,” PGA Tour insider Dan Rapaport said of Hovland after he won the BMW Championship.

Meanwhile, Scheffler remains winless on the PGA Tour since March despite having one of the great ball-striking seasons on record.

He was once again let down by his putter, and faces an off-season of trying to rectify issues with the flat stick that have prevented him from more wins.

“Scottie Scheffler looks exactly like you’d expect somebody who’s having one of the great ball-striking seasons ever but hasn’t won in five months because he can’t buy a putt to look on his 11th round of insanely hot, muggy playoff golf: Utterly miserable,” CBS’ Kyle Porter said.

2024 valero texas open prop bet picks and pga tour predictions, share this article.

tour championship standings 2023

The PGA Tour will stay in Texas for the final tournament before the Masters, heading from Houston to San Antonio for the 2024 Valero Texas Open . TPC San Antonio is hosting this event once again, with Corey Conners looking to win it for the 2nd straight year.

Below, we search for the best value prop bets among the 2024 Valero Texas Open odds and make our PGA Tour picks and predictions .

Rory McIlroy (+1000) is teeing it up this week, which is atypical for him the week before the Masters, as is Ludvig Aberg (+1200). Also among the favorites to win in San Antonio Hideki Matsuyama , Jordan Spieth and Collin Morikawa are , all coming in with odds of +2500 or shorter.

The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio is a par 72 and 7,438 yards. It’s a relatively new course, opening in 2010, and features very little elevation change. If the wind is mild, the scoring should be low this week, with the winning score being between 11-under and 20-under par in each of the last 8 years.

Valero Texas Open – Top-5 picks

Odds provided by BetMGM Sportsbook ; access USA TODAY Sports Scores and Sports Betting Odds hub for a full list. Lines last updated Tuesday at 7:31 p.m. ET.

Corey Conners (+450)

Conners has won this event twice before and he’s also finished 14th, 26th and 35th in his other 3 starts since 2019. As one of the best ball strikers on tour, he’s a great fit for this course.

Ludvig Aberg (+260)

Aberg missed the cut in his tournament debut here last year, but he’s an even better player now than he was at that time. He hasn’t finished worse than 25th in his last 5 starts.

Valero Texas Open – Top-10 picks

Rory mcilroy (+120).

McIlroy doesn’t have a top 10 yet this season, and if he doesn’t notch one this weekend, it’ll be the 1st time since 2010 that he goes to the Masters without a top-10 on the PGA Tour. In other words, he’s due.

Alex Noren (+300)

Noren is on fire, finishing 9th, 11th and 19th in his last 3 starts. He came in 15th at the Valero Texas Open a year ago so he’s a perfect match of course history and recent form.

Aaron Rai (+400)

Rai continues to be underrated each week despite having 3 top-25 finishes in his last 5 starts – including a 7th-place finish last week in Houston. In 2 starts here, he’s finished 28th and 29th so he’s had some success in the last 2 years.

Other T10 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Erik van Rooyen (+550)

Valero Texas Open – Top-20 picks

Ryan moore (+375).

Moore seems to have found something in the last 3 weeks, finishing 45th, 5th and 31st in his last 3 starts. With his ball striking (12th in strokes gained: tee-to-green), he’s a good course fit and could be in contention if the putter cooperates. He’s finished in the top 10 here twice in his last 4 starts.

Matt Kuchar (+400)

Kuchar is not playing well right now, having missed 6 of 8 cuts this season, but he hasn’t finished worse than 12th in this event in the last 4 years, a stretch that includes 3 top-7 finishes. At +400, all he needs is a top-20.

Keith Mitchell (+225)

Mitchell is hitting the ball extremely well, but his driver has gone cold in his last 3 rounds, leading to a final-round collapse at the Valspar Championship and a missed cut in Houston. With his odds dipping, now is a good time to buy the dip at a course that emphasizes tee-to-green play.

Other T20 contenders ( in order from longest odds to shortest ):

  • Andrew Novak (+350)

Valero Texas Open – Matchups

Suggested play is golfer in bold .

Corey Conners (-120) vs. Collin Morikawa (-105)

Morikawa is hard to trust right now, having finished 45th and 64th in his last 2 starts this season. He’s also never played this event, while Conners is a yearly participant and a 2-time champion.

Aaron Rai (-110) vs. Beau Hossler (-110)

Hossler has been a cut-maker here, going 5-for-5 in his last 5 starts at the Texas Open, but he’s only finished better than 36th here once in that span. Rai has back-to-back top-30 finishes in this event and is coming off a 7th place finish last week.

Valero Texas Open – Top Korean

Byeong hun an (+150).

An missed the cut in his last start at the Players Championship, which came as a surprise, but he had finished in the top-21 in each of his previous 3 starts. He also has 2 top-10s in his last 3 starts here. This bet is a way to fade Tom Kim , who’s +225 to be the top Korean in his 1st start since battling an illness that sidelined him for a couple of weeks.

Valero Texas Open – Top South African

Erik van rooyen (+175).

Christiaan Bezuidenhout is the favorite at +100, but he shouldn’t have significantly shorter odds than van Rooyen at +175. Garrick Higgo (+360) is the only other contender in this bet, as well.

Valero Texas Open – First-round leader

Matt kuchar (+9000).

Kuchar always plays well here, as referenced above, and at a course he seems to love, all it takes is 1 great round to cash this bet at +9000. If he gets hot, he could lead after Round 1.

Alex Noren (+4000)

Noren has the 5th-best 1st-round scoring average on tour this season (67.86). He only shot 70 in the opening round last year, but still managed to come in 15th.

Valero Texas Open – To make the cut

Mcilroy, aberg and matsuyama: yes (+100).

It’s a chalky made-cut parlay, but all 3 of these players are typically reliable when it comes to playing the weekend.

DII NCAA men's basketball championship history

The Division II men's basketball championship consists of a 64-team field with eight qualifiers from each region competing at a single regional site. Twenty-three teams earn automatic qualifications and the remaining 41 receive at-large bids to the tournament. Once the eight regionals conclude, respective teams will advance to the Men's Elite Eight at the Ford Center in Evansville, Indiana.

The DII men's basketball national championship dates back to 1957, skipping 2020 due to COVID-19, with the first-ever championship trophy going to Wheaton (Ill.). Kentucky Wesleyan is the winningest team, with eight national championships. Evansville follows with five titles.

Below is a list of all DII men's basketball champs since 1957:

2024 NHL playoff race tracker: Projected first-round matchups, standings after Monday night's games

The nhl playoff races are heating up with less than three weeks to go..

leafs-panthers-getty.jpg

The NHL is in the home stretch of the 2023-24 regular season. That means playoff races are healing up atop divisions and on the wild card bubble.

Throughout the last 15 or so games, every point will be crucial as team's battle for playoff positioning. Fans will be doing a lot of scoreboard watching over the next month, and they'll be checking the updated standings every month.

The playoff picture may change on a nightly basis, so CBS Sports has you covered with our NHL playoff race tracker. It'll be updated daily to show where each playoff hopeful stands as the postseason gets closer and closer.

Reminder: Here's how the NHL playoff seeding works

  • The top three teams in each division automatically qualify for the playoffs.
  • Each conference has two wild-card spots.
  • The top division winner in each conference will play the second wild card team, and the other division winner will play the first wild card team.
  • The second and third-place teams in each division will match up with one another in the first round.

*Regulation wins are the first tiebreaker, and regulation plus overtime wins are the second tiebreaker. Shootout wins are not counted in regulation plus overtime wins.

Eastern Conference playoff picture

Atlantic division.

1. Boston Bruins  | 43-17-15 | 101 points

Points percentage: .673 Regulation wins: 33 Regulation plus overtime wins:  39 Current first-round matchup:   Tampa Bay Lightning

The Bruins have recently struggled with three losses over their last five games. However, they did slip past the Capitals in a shootout over the weekend to get back on track.

2. Florida Panthers  | 47-23-5 | 99 points

Points percentage: .660 Regulation wins: 38 Regulation plus overtime wins: 44 Current first-round matchup: Toronto Maple Leafs

Much like the Bruins, the Panthers have been struggling lately as they've lost seven of their last nine games. However, this team is too talented to let this tailspin spiral out of control.

3. Toronto Maple Leafs | 43-22-9 | 95 points

Points percentage: .642 Regulation wins:  31 Regulation plus overtime wins: 38 Current first-round matchup:  Florida Panthers

The Maple Leafs have been the third team in the Atlantic Division for most of the season, but that spot is far from guaranteed. The Lightning continue to creep up on the Leafs over the final month of the regular season.

Metropolitan Division

1. New York Rangers | 50-21-4 | 104 points

Points percentage: .693 Regulation wins: 39 Regulation plus overtime wins: 47 Current first-round matchup:  Washington Capitals

The Rangers dropped a game to the Penguins, but this is still one of the top teams in the Eastern Conference. They'll be fighting with the Bruins and Hurricanes down the stretch to see who earns the top seed.

2. Carolina Hurricanes | 47-21-7 | 101 points

Points percentage: .703 Regulation wins: 39 Regulation plus overtime wins:  47 Current first-round matchup:  Philadelphia Flyers

The Hurricanes have thrived since landing the likes of Jake Guentzel and Evgeny Kuznetsov at the trade deadline. Carolina looks like a juggernaut in the East after outscoring the Red Wings and Canadiens 7-0 over their last two games.

3. Philadelphia Flyers | 36-29-11 | 83 points

Points percentage: .546 Regulation wins: 28 Regulation plus overtime wins: 32 Current first-round matchup: Carolina Hurricanes

The Flyers did earn a point in an overtime loss to the Islanders, and we even saw the debut of goaltender Ivan Fedotov in relief of Samuel Ersson. It was a gutsy effort for Philadelphia and good to earn a point, but those are games that the Flyers need to win at this stage of the season.

WC1. Tampa Bay Lightning | 41-26-7 | 89 points

Points percentage: .601 Regulation wins:  33 Regulation plus overtime wins: 38 Current first-round matchup:  Boston Bruins

The Lightning are likely the team that no one wants to face in the opening round of the postseason. Tampa Bay has won eight of its last 10 games, and Nikita Kucherov continues to be electric.

WC2. Washington Capitals | 36-27-10 | 82 points

Points percentage: .562 Regulation wins: 28 Regulation plus overtime wins:  32 Current first-round matchup:  New York Rangers

The Capitals have come out of nowhere to place themselves in the playoff conversation, but dropping back-to-back games to the Bruins and Maple Leafs isn't ideal. Still, goaltender Charlie Lindgren was been so impressive over the last month with a 2.45 goals-against-average.

Detroit Red Wings | 37-30-8 | 82 points

Points percentage: .547 Regulation wins: 26 Regulation plus overtime wins: 35 Current first-round matchup: N/A

The Red Wings have taken a complete nosedive over the last month with just four wins since Feb. 29. Detroit did get back on track with a huge win against the Lightning, who the Red Wings are competing with for a wild-card spot.

New York Islanders | 32-27-15 | 79 points

Points percentage:  .534 Regulation wins:  23 Regulation plus overtime wins:  31 Current first-round matchup:  N/A

The Islanders have just three victories in their last 11 games. However, the Islanders did get a much-needed win against the Flyers in overtime to remain alive in the wild-card race.

Pittsburgh Penguins | 33-30-11 | 77 points

Points percentage: .520 Regulation wins:  28 Regulation plus overtime wins:  31 Current first-round matchup: N/A

The Penguins got a massive win against the Rangers on Monday. In addition, Sidney Crosby clinched the 19th point-per-game season of his NHL career, and continues to age like a fine wine.

New Jersey Devils | 36-34-4 | 76 points

Points percentage: .514 Regulation wins:  31 Regulation plus overtime wins: 36 Current first-round matchup: N/A

The Devils have actually turned things around lately, including four wins over their last six games. Deadline acquisition  Jake Allen  has been solid since his arrival for a team that was in desperate rate need of goaltending help.

Western Conference playoff picture

Central division.

1. Dallas Stars  | 47-19-9 | 103 points

Points percentage: .687 Regulation wins: 36 Regulation plus overtime wins: 44 Current first-round matchup:   Los Angeles Kings

The Stars have grabbed the lead in the Central thanks to a seven-game winning streak. Goaltender Jake Oettinger may finally be turning his season around as he's allowed two or fewer goals in each of his last five starts.

2. Colorado Avalanche  | 47-22-6 | 100 points

Points percentage: .667 Regulation wins:  39 Regulation plus overtime wins:  45 Current first-round matchup:   Winnipeg Jets

Nathan MacKinnon continues to make a Hart Trophy push with his sensational season. After looking unbeatable in recent weeks, the Avalanche have dropped three of their last four games, including a lackluster 4-1 defeat at the hands of the lowly Blue Jackets.

3. Winnipeg Jets | 45-24-6 | 96 points

Points percentage: .640 Regulation wins:  40 Regulation plus overtime wins:  45 Current first-round matchup: Colorado Avalanche

The Jets were a big-time slide with a six-game losing streak, but were able to get back into the win column against the Kings. Defeating the Kings was a huge victory considering that the Kings are looking to regain the No. 3 spot in the Central Division race.

Pacific Division

1. Vancouver Canucks | 46-20-8 | 100 points

Points percentage: .676 Regulation wins:  40 Regulation plus overtime wins: 46 Current first-round matchup:   Nashville Predators

The Canucks hold a sizable lead in the Pacific Division, and they've won four of their last six games. There's really no reason to panic with goaltender Thatcher Demko out of the lineup.

2. Edmonton Oilers | 45-23-5 | 95 points

Points percentage: .651 Regulation wins: 35 Regulation plus overtime wins:  43 Current first-round matchup:   Vegas Golden Knights

Connor McDavid and the Oilers previously looked to be locked into second place, but the Golden Knights are making a late-season charge. Edmonton is going to want to have a home-ice advantage in the opening round, so wins will be paramount down the stretch.

3. Vegas Golden Knights | 41-25-8 | 90 points

Points percentage: .608 Regulation wins:  31 Regulation plus overtime wins:  37 Current first-round matchup: Edmonton Oilers

The Golden Knights are getting hot at the right time as they've earned back-to-back wins against the Jets and Wild. Vegas is playing some of its best hockey with five wins over its last six contests.

WC1. Nashville Predators | 43-27-4 | 90 points

Points percentage: .608 Regulation wins: 35 Regulation plus overtime wins:  41 Current first-round matchup:  Vancouver Canucks

The Predators were one of the hottest teams in the NHL , but have lost back-to-back games. Even still, Filip Forsberg is on a nine-game point streak, and is playing his best hockey of the season.

WC2. Los Angeles Kings | 38-25-11 | 87 points

Points percentage: .588 Regulation wins:  32 Regulation plus overtime wins: 36 Current first-round matchup:  Dallas Stars

The Kings have fallen out of the No. 3 spot in the Pacific Division, and have dropped three consecutive games after previously going on a four-game winning streak. It could be a back-and-forth between the Kings and Golden Knights the rest of the way.

St. Louis Blues | 40-31-4 | 84 points

Points percentage: .560 Regulation wins: 29 Regulation plus overtime wins: 36 Current first-round matchup: N/A

The Blues certainly aren't out of the playoff picture, but they need to start stringing wins together to catch the Kings for that final wild-card spot. They were able to top the Oilers in a massive overtime win to take a step in the right direction.

Minnesota Wild | 35-29-9 | 79 points

Points percentage: .541 Regulation wins: 28 Regulation plus overtime wins: 32 Current first-round matchup: N/A

The Wild are currently eight points behind the Kings for the final wild-card spot in the West. Minnesota needed to defeat Vegas over the weekend, but chose to pull their goaltender late in the game, and it backfired in a big way in a loss.
