this tour exceeding our expectations, the Guide ( Jacquline Green )and Bus ( Lee ) driver went over and above to make sure every member of tour was included, comfortable and made this trip to UK even more memorable. The Guide gave us plenty of information regarding history and was extremely informative on every location we passed and stopped at. we loved the local treats supplied by the Guide as well. The bus was comfortable, the intinerary was perfect and kept us busy including as much as possible. The accommodation was excellent. I would definitely recommend this company and way of travel to others. and we would use Trafalgar again in the future.

This tour was amazing!! David does such a fantastic job planning and leading his beautiful tours of Cornwall. The pace is very manageable and not rushed, which I greatly appreciated. We had a good amount of time at each spot, not having to rush through anything and pivoting when needed based on minor hiccups such as traffic and weather. Cornwall is stunning and I highly recommend adventuring there with Dacey's tours! I hope to be able to do the second itinerary sometime in the future.

A great way to see some of the most popular and beautiful destinations in this part of the country. The itinerary includes stops in London, Bournemouth/Southampton, Exeter/Torquay, and Cornwall. One of the things I liked most about this tour was that it gave me the flexibility to set my own pace. I could spend as much or as little time as I wanted in each place, and I could also choose to do some activities on my own. This made the tour feel 100% personal and tailored to my interests. I would definitely recommend it to anyone who is interested in seeing some of the best that this part of Britain has to offer.

Best of Devon and Cornwall (8 Days) Tour

Best of Devon and Cornwall (8 Days)

was a great tour except for the 4.5 hr delay on way to Bideford. We feel through no fault of our bus driver or guide, the switchback had caused at least 5 similar accidents this year. We waited 4.5 hours near the site during the late afternoon. The temperature began to drop and several of the elderly tourists were quite uncomfortable. A nearby rental cottage offered us some shelter which many took advantage. Our guide gave us water and distributed a couple of jackets. There seemed to be no emergency plan in place ie. school buses to transfer us to our next destination or a hotel or restaurant to await the recovery of the bus or whatever alternative. We were disappointed that Trafalgar offered us no alternative to a situation.

What people love about Exeter Tours

We had a wonderful time! Our tour guide, Kate, was knowledgeable and accommodating for all of our interests and needs. I would highly recommend this trip.
We thoroughly enjoyed our Devon and Cornwall tour with Jack. Jack is extremely knowledgeable about the area, so engaging with a lot of humour and an excellent driver! We would love to join another tour on our next visit to the UK.

Places to visit in Exeter

Exeter Cathedral

External view of Exeter Cathedral under a cloudy blue sky

Exeter Cathedral  is the most visited landmark in the West Country, brimming with 900 years of history. Adorned with grotesques, the cathedral – that took around 300 years to build – sports the longest unbroken medieval vaulted ceiling in the world, which is decorated in historical scenes like the murder of Thomas Becket. It’s also famous for its two Norman towers, and 15th-century Astronomical Clock. You can admire the decadent interiors of the cathedral for a small price and, if you plan your timings right, catch the heavenly voices of the Cathedral Choir’s Evensong. Afterwards, take a stroll down neighbouring Cathedral Close – the heart of the city since the Roman era – to see some beautiful Grade I-listed buildings that date back to the Medieval and Early Modern Ages.

Exeter Cathedral

Officially known as the Cathedral Church of Saint Peter in Exeter, Exeter Cathedral was established in 1133 but has been much altered over the years. Its squat, almost square appearance looks quite unlike most other English cathedrals. Boasting Gothic flourishes, its ornate western-facing façade was added some 300 years later in the 14th century, when the construction was finally completed.

The seat of the Bishop of Exeter, the cathedral's interior is equally interesting and contains many well-preserved flourishes from different time periods. Its most notable interior features include a unique 15th-century astronomical clock, a collection of 50 medieval-era misericords that once served as a form of prayer stool, and an ornately carved minstrels' gallery dating from the mid-1300s.

Exeter Cathedral also boasts the world's longest medieval-era stone-vaulted ceiling , as well as one of the oldest cathedral libraries in England. Established in the 11th century, it still contains one of the original books that formed the basis of the library around 1050. A more recent addition to the cathedral includes a Boer War memorial, added during renovations in the 19th century.

A great way to get the most out of your visit to this must-see cathedral is as part of a guided tour. A variety of tour options are available, including one that features a climb up to the cathedral's roof. Fun nighttime tours up to the tower area also available. Audio tours are available for those who prefer to go it alone. A gift shop and café are also available for guests to enjoy.

Exeter Quayside

Visitors are often surprised to learn that Exeter, although some miles from the sea, has a long history as an important port. It's situated on the River Exe, and evidence exists that the Romans in fact settled here nearly 2,000 years ago for its convenient river access to the English Channel.

Though lost for a period of time, this connection was re-opened in 1563 with the development of a ship canal leading to Exe Estuary and, eventually, the open sea. Exeter Quayside was also developed around this time, with some of the original buildings dating from this period of rapid development. The oldest surviving building, the Custom House, was built in 1680 and now serves as a useful tourist information center and gift shop.

Redeveloped and rejuvenated, Exeter Quayside is today a vibrant district that's within an easy walk of the cathedral and is a delight to explore. Highlights include a lovely riverside park with plenty of benches from which to gaze at the water and watch the world go by, as well as numerous eateries and shopping outlets .

For other fun things to do, you can rent bicycles to explore the pleasant quayside trails, or even rent a kayak or canoe and hit the water.

Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery (RAMM)

Known affectionately by locals simply as "the RAMM," the Royal Albert Memorial Museum & Art Gallery is Exeter's largest and most important cultural attraction . Established in 1868 and set in a historic 18th-century building just a few minutes' walk away from Exeter Train Station, the museum underwent a major renovation in 2011 and is well worth visiting for all ages.

Highlights of a visit include exploring the museum's large collection of nearly a million artifacts related to zoology, anthropology, geology, and archeology. While only a fraction of this huge collection is on display at any one time in its 16 galleries, exhibits and information is laid out in an easy-to-follow and compelling manner using state-of-the-art technology.

The RAMM has also built up a solid reputation for its impressive collection of artworks. It's also a popular stop for traveling exhibits from other galleries across the globe, with temporary exhibits changing frequently in addition to regular educational programs and workshops for both kids and adults. A café and gift shop are located on the premises.

Exeter's Underground Passages

Exeter's unique Underground Passages offer a fascinating look at the city's early infrastructure. Dating back to medieval times, the city's unique network of underground passageways and tunnels were originally built to provide clean drinking water from a series of springs located outside the city walls.

The only such water system in Britain, it initially consisted of a series of lead pipes, with the tunnels we see today added later to allow repairs and upgrades to be carried out underground without causing disruption for the city folk moving about on the streets above.

Exeter's Underground Passages are accessible today via a 30-minute-long guided tour , which includes entry to a visitor center with fascinating interactive displays showing how the system was built and operated. Other highlights include film and video presentations, artifacts discovered during archaeological digs, and a gift shop.

Address: 2 Paris Street, Exeter, Devon

Official site: https://exeter.gov.uk/leisure-and-culture/our-attractions/underground-passages/

Exeter Guildhall

Dating all the way back to the 1100s, Exeter's historic Guildhall stands as a testament to the city's importance as a place of trade and governance. It's located on the High Street near the cathedral. While the building's façade is a more recent addition (it was added around 1590), much of the rest of the structure remains little changed.

In fact, with records indicating the building was in use in the latter half of the 12th century, Exeter Guildhall is thought to be the oldest municipal building still being used for the purpose for which it was designed. Other notable features include the oak door dating from the 1590s, the original roof, and an impressive 18th-century chandelier.

Still often used for city functions and banquets, the public can visit this remarkably well-preserved historic building as part of a private guided one-hour tour which can be tailored to your specific interests. For a real treat, ask to have a cream tea added to your tour.

Northernhay Gardens

Located just behind always bustling Exeter High Street, lovely Northernhay Gardens has the distinction of being England's oldest public open space. Established in 1612 for city citizens, the site was known to have been used by the Romans as a quarry. In addition to a section of Roman wall, the park is also where you'll find a section of England's only surviving Saxon town wall, too.

It also has the distinction of being one of the city's largest parks . Consisting of 1,200 acres of lawns and gardens, there's plenty of room to wander. The park is also home to a number of important Exeter memorials and Victorian-era statues, including Athelstan's Tower war memorial, as well as a bandstand.

In addition to enjoying superb views over the city, visitors will enjoy setting up for a picnic on the grass or catching one of the seasonal events or concerts regularly held here.

Address: Northernhay Gate, Exeter, Devon

St. Nicholas Priory

Tucked away in an area of impressive old homes and set on a narrow laneway known as The Mint stands Exeter's oldest building: St. Nicholas Priory. Established by William the Conqueror in 1087 and over 935 years old , this remarkably well-preserved timber-framed building was turned into a merchant's home under Henry VIII's rule and offers a fascinating insight into life during the Tudor period.

Located on the Exeter Woollen Trail and well-known for its important role in the city's most famous trade, the building was eventually taken over by the city and turned into a fascinating living museum. Highlights of a visit include a working medieval kitchen, Tudor-period furnishings in the parlor and bed chamber, as well as the impressive Great Hall.

While now only open on Sundays for guided tours, it also serves as a unique function space and venue. Check the attraction's website for details, including news of upcoming plays and performances.

Medieval Exe Bridge

Located just a short walk along the river from Exeter Quayside, the medieval Exe Bridge is another reminder of the city's former importance as a place of trade and commerce. Built in 1214 , nearly half of this once 590-foot-long bridge survives to this day and has the distinction of being the oldest and largest of its kind to have survived.

In addition to once having up to 18 arches (8.5 have survived), the bridge's chapel has also survived. Known as St. Edmund's Church, it's a reminder that almost all such bridges were built with chapels on them as a place to give thanks for a safe crossing. In its heyday, the bridge would also have supported numerous other buildings. Once a marsh, the surrounding area is now a park.

The Iron Bridge in Exeter

Another historic feat of engineering worth visiting is the Iron Bridge. Built over Longbrook Valley in the 1830s, this elegant structure allowed traffic and trade to enter the city near the former North Gate without having to make the difficult climb through the valley.

The bridge is made from cast iron pieces that were shipped into Exeter and assembled, and the end result is an 800-foot-long bridge with 40 arches that looks like a piece of artwork.

After crossing over the bridge, be sure to take the steps leading down to its base in order to fully appreciate its scale.

Exeter Castle

Also known as Rougemont Castle, Exeter Castle was built on the site of the old Roman walls in 1068. While little now remains other than a set of picturesque ruins, the castle was once an important part of the city's defenses, and is even included in William Shakespeare's epic play, Richard III .

The castle was named after the red stone used in its construction, which can still be observed in the surviving Norman gatehouse. You can access the old castle through either Northernhay or Rougemont Gardens.

The Ultimate Itinerary for Spending One Day in Exeter: Things to Do & What to See!

Aerial view of Exeter in summer day, UK

Last Updated on: 19th September 2021, 06:28 pm

This one day in Exeter itinerary is the perfect introduction to this charming city and is perfect for someone spending a day out in Exeter on coming to the city on a day trip!

Whether you are interested in history, culture, religion, or gastronomy, you’ll need to visit Exeter. Devon’s second-largest city has a range of attractions, a beautiful city centre, and a great food scene!

While I’d usually recommend spending at least a  weekend in Exeter , or even longer if you want to visit more parts of East Devon (such as all of the  attractions in Exmouth !), it’s possible to see a lot of Exeter’s highlights on a day trip.

Looking for more than a day trip in the area? Check out this  3-Day Stonehenge, Bath & South West Coast Tour  or this  Devon and Cornwall: 5-Day Tour from London!

About Exeter

Exeter Cathedral, Devon. England. UK.

Exeter is a fascinating city in Great Britain that really doesn’t get enough credit. It started as an Iron age Celtic settlement but was taken over by the Romans in around 49 AD. Romans occupied the area for around 350 years and built a fort, a bathhouse that now lies under Cathedral Yard and the first city walls.

Exeter prospered in the Medieval period due to the Wool trade. There was an abundance of sheep in the nearby hills of Devon and the townspeople had a bountiful water supply on the River Exe, as well as a direct link to the sea for exportation, making the creation and selling of woollen cloth effortless. During this era, it was the fourth largest city in the UK.

Sailing Boats and Yachts Moored on the Exeter Canal at Turf Lock

The wool industry collapsed in the 18th century, but not long after, a rail link was established, which caused tourism to boom. Victorian tourists found the Medieval buildings charming, and many religious visitors came to the city for the 14th-century Cathedral.

The city was badly affected by the Blitz and around a third of the buildings were destroyed, including some of the most important examples of Georgian architecture. However, much of the historic centre remains, and it’s still an amazing place to visit.

There’s so much to learn about in Exeter, but it’s also a great spot to admire nature within a city, enjoy a vibrant food scene and sample various cocktail bars.

Here’s an itinerary for one day in Exeter!

Getting to Exeter

View of the English city of Exeter. The administrative center of Devon County. England.

Exeter is easy to reach from London, Bristol, Birmingham, and Plymouth – you can take a direct train from any of these cities.

It will take you around two and a half hours to reach Exeter from London and Birmingham, an hour from Plymouth, and an hour and a half from Bristol. If you are travelling from other UK cities, you will usually need to change trains in Bristol, London or Birmingham.

You can also take coaches to Exeter. The National Express and Megabus both run to the city and are much cheaper than the trains. However, they tend to take longer – up to 4 hours from Birmingham and London, at least 2 hours from Bristol and over one hour from Plymouth.

It takes around 3 hours to drive to Exeter from London and Birmingham, 2 hours from Cardiff and  Bath , 1 hour 30 from Bristol, and 1 hour from Plymouth.

If you are driving, I recommend parking in Haven Banks Car Park 2. To find this car park, type in ‘Haven Banks Car Park’ into your Sat Nav. Once you reach it, follow the road for a little longer until you reach a long-stay car park. You can purchase an all-day parking ticket for just £3.50 here, and it’s only a 10-minute walk to Exeter Quay!

Where to Stay in Exeter

The residential houses with ivy over wall on the Cathedral yard street in the area of Exeter Cathedral Close. Exeter. Devon. England

If you will be staying here overnight during your United Kingdom journey, the  Jury’s Inn Exeter  is in a fabulous location and is well-reviewed by travelers. Located under a mile from St Davids Railway Station and near the historic quayside and Exeter Cathedral, you’ll be able to enjoy your full day in Exeter without a hitch!

See reviews and availability for the  Jury’s Inn Exeter .

Your One Day in Exeter Itinerary

Get ready for a great day that you won’t ever forget seeing the best of what Exeter city has to offer!

If you have driven to Exeter and parked in Haven Banks, you’ll walk past the Quayside on your way to Cathedral Green. There are a few places here to grab a bite to eat.

If you want a full breakfast, check out Mangos Quayside, where you can have a full English. If you just want something small, the Boatyard Cafe and Bakery serves delicious coffee and pastries.

If you’re already in the city centre, you could head to Boston Tea Party, a famous South West chain located in Exeter’s historic post office. Make sure that you sit upstairs, where you can still see some of the features from its past.

Visit Exeter Cathedral

Exeter Cathedral Outside

This one day in Exeter itinerary includes a walking tour at 11 am – so if you make it to Cathedral Green before 10:15 am, you’ll have time to pop into the Cathedral and Cathedral Close first. Even if you’re not all that into Cathedrals it’s worth seeing Exeter’s – it’s one of the best in the country and a magnificent example of gothic architecture.

Exeter Cathedral dates back to 1133 AD when a Norman Cathedral was on the site. However, only the two towers remain from this time – the body of the Cathedral was rebuilt in the 13th century. The original Norman Cathedral was very dark, as the walls needed to be thick with small windows to hold up the roof.

After Bishop Walter Bronescombe travelled to Salisbury in the 13th century and saw their magnificent Cathedral, he ordered that Exeter’s be rebuilt with flying buttresses. This new architectural style could hold up the roof and allow for bigger windows. So, the Cathedral was rebuilt – only 80 years after the original building opened!

Exeter Cathedral is the only one in the country that has two towers, and it also has the longest uninterrupted Medieval Gothic vaulting in the world.

Go for a Stroll on a Red Coat Walking Tour

Exeter Cathedral Inside

Exeter is an incredibly historical city, and the best way to learn about it is by doing a walking tour. The Award-Winning Red Coat Tours are run by knowledgeable volunteer guides. At least one tour runs each day and they normally leave by the Richard Hooker Statue on Cathedral Green.

The most popular tours are:

Cathedral to  Quay:  this is a general walking tour of Exeter

Medieval  Exeter:  this is all about the Medieval period when the city thrived due to the woollen cloth trade.

Forgotten Exete r: this will take you around the interesting hidden areas of the city that you may otherwise miss.

Exeter  Old and New:  this tour discusses Exeter’s 2000 years of rich history by visiting various sites, and discusses the city today.

All of these walking tours are free, and the guides are all volunteers who do it because they want to encourage tourism to Exeter. The only thing they ask is to leave them a good review on TripAdvisor!

Enjoy Your Lunch: Tea on the Green or a Quayside Restaurant

Pizza at the Waterfront Exeter

Depending on the tour, you’ll either finish at the quayside or back at the Cathedral Green. If you’re at the Quayside, head to On the Waterfront for lunch – their pizzas are incredible! If you’re near the Cathedral, you could try Tea on the Green, a cafe that serves open sandwiches.

If you are at the Quayside, I’d recommend spending a little bit of time walking around the area. It’s a beautiful part of the city! If it’s open, it’s also worth going inside the Custom House. This was built in the latter 17th century to administer the imports and exports in the city properly. It is now the tourist information centre but it retains a lot of its original features, including an elaborate ceiling.

Custom House Exeter

If you are in town and you are visiting on a Tuesday or Thursday, you can do a lunchtime tour around the Tuckers Hall. This tour will teach you about Exeter’s woollen cloth trade – which was the industry that made the city thrive. Tuckers Hall is only open from 10:30 am – 1 pm Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday.

Tour the RAMM Museum or the Exeter Tunnels

The RAMM Exeter

If they are open and you can visit them, the Exeter Tunnels are a must-do. These tunnels transported water around the city during the Medieval period, and you can do a guided tour of them, hearing a few tales about Medieval Exeter as you go!

However, these underground passages aren’t suitable for everybody – if you have claustrophobia, mobility problems, or are travelling with small children, it’s best to avoid them. You also need to pre-book in advance, and they only have tours leaving at certain times.

If you can’t or don’t want to see the Exeter Tunnels, visit the Royal Albert Memorial Museum and Art Gallery, or RAMM. This museum is the largest in Exeter and is over 150 years old – it was dedicated to Prince Albert, Queen Victoria’s husband, and was constructed after his death.

This museum is definitely one of the  best things to do in Devon in the rain  for people of any age. There is a range of exhibitions, focusing on local history, local archaeology, international archaeology, and world cultures. It’s free entry (donations welcome), so it’s well worth visiting and seeing what you can find!

If you aren’t too tired yet, it’s also worth ticking off some more of Exeter’s attractions that you may not have seen in your walking tour.

See the Undervisited Priory

The Priory is a really significant building in Exeter, but it’s rarely visited on trips here. It is 900 years old, and after it was dissolved as a priory, it was a Tudor home. Nowadays, the interior still replicates what it looked like in the 16th century. If you are visiting Exeter on a Sunday it is open from 1 pm – 4 pm, but if not it’s still worth admiring the outside.

Marvel at Stepcote Hill and the House That Moved

The House that Moved

This is one of the most interesting parts of Exeter. Stepcote Hill is named so because it is very steep, and at the bottom, there are some beautiful houses. One of them – The House That Moved – dates back to 1430, but hasn’t always been on this site.

It was moved to its current spot in 1961. This was because the main road was built in its original place, and the public protested about houses being demolished. The council’s response was to put it on rail tracks and move it to this position.

All very well, but something that people often forget is that there was a near-identical house in exactly the place that the House that Moved ended up – which had already been demolished!

Wonder at Tiny Parliament Street

Parliament Street

Parliament Street is just off Exeter High Street and it is thought to be the narrowest street in the world. At first glance, it just seems like an alleyway. However, it is very much a street (albeit a pedestrian-only one) because there are two doorways along it which have the address ‘Parliament Street!’. It is 25 inches wide at its narrowest, widening to 45 inches.

Go Sightseeing at The City Walls

The City Walls were built in Roman times and have been adapted and expanded on throughout the years. They were originally made with trap from an ancient volcanic plug – you can find this ancient volcano in Northernhay Gardens. This stone hardened over the years, which is why the wall has lasted so long!

The walls were adapted over the years with different stones, including Heavitree Stone. Nowadays, they are a mishmash of different colours and stone types, and are officially known as ‘the city walls’ rather than ‘the Roman walls’. You can stand on the walls at various points in the city, including the bridge near the Cathedral and Quay car park and Northernhay Gardens.

Pay Your Respects at St. Catherine’s Chapel

One thing that you’ll notice as you walk around Exeter is that the architecture is either really old or in a uniform 1950s style. Exeter was one of the most historic cities in the United Kingdom – but a third of it was destroyed in the Exeter Blitz.

The Exeter Blitz happened because of its historical significance to the country. Hitler used a German guidebook called “the Baedeker Guide to England”, found five cities famed for their history and culture (Exeter, Bath, Canterbury, Norwich, and York), and bombed them, intending to undermine British spirit.

Many of the ruins were demolished and rebuilt upon in a uniform, no-nonsense style – the construction needed to be as quick as possible, and there was no time for unique designs or fancy buildings.

However, there are a few ruins that have remained as a poignant reminder of how much this city suffered in the Second World War. St Catherine’s Chapel is one of them. Here, you can walk around the ruins, and see some of the remains that were found in the rubble – everything from pieces of china to coke cans.

Enjoy Your Well-Earned Dinner

Medieval Buildings in Exeter

After a busy day of sightseeing, you’ve earned it! Exeter has an excellent food scene for a city of its size, so there are plenty of places to enjoy dinner.

Lloyds Lounge:  this restaurant is located right by St Catherine’s Chapel and serves delicious mains and small plates. If there is a group of 4-6 of you, you can book one of their summer beach huts! If you aren’t driving you can enjoy the full cocktail menu.

Hub Box:  dine here for burgers and other mains in a relaxed setting, with plenty of veggie and vegan options.

Puerto Lounge:  this European-inspired restaurant serves mains and tapas-style meals and is located by the quayside.

Ganbei:  this Asian restaurant is also by the quayside, and they have a huge menu with lots of different types of noodles, hotpot, and other Chinese-inspired dishes!

A Few More Things to Do in Exeter + Ideas for Day Trips from Exeter

Exeter Quayside

Hopefully, this Exeter travel guide has given you everything you need to have a great day. If you find yourself with extra time while in the city, you can add one of these stops or day trips from Exeter.

If you want to do a bit of shopping, head to Gandy Street and Fore Street.

If you want to see the seaside and have more time, you can see the nearby seaside town of Topsham. If you want to enjoy an entire day on the English Riviera, towns that can be reached include Torquay and Paignton.

If you love to visit UNESCO World Heritage Sites, the Jurassic Coast, England’s first natural World Heritage Site, is close by and can be seen fairly easily from Exeter. It stretches from Exmouth in East Devon to Studland Bay in Dorset.

An overlooked but fabulous day trip from Exeter is to head to Dartmoor National Park, where you can enjoy hiking along with some water sports.

Leaving Exeter

Exeter Quayside from Bridge

The last trains are between 8:30 pm and 10:00 pm – make sure you check on  National Rail . I’d advise always aiming for the second to last train of the day in case something goes wrong.

Coaches leave throughout the night – you might need to select a specific return time when you book your tickets.

If you have parked at Haven Banks Car Park 2, the car park is locked at 8:00 pm, so make sure that you get back in time!

While Exeter isn’t anywhere near as touristy as the likes of London, Bath, and Oxford, it is a wonderful city with loads of things to do. Add that to a fantastic food scene and a relaxed city atmosphere, and it’s easy to see why it’s worth spending a day in Exeter!

Good to Know: This one day in Exeter itinerary comes to us from Claire, a South West England local. After blogging about international destinations for six years, she started her blog  Go South West England  to shine a light on her local area.

Here, she blogs about everything from where to visit and what to eat in the region to interesting stories about the area!

5 Things to Pack for Your Trip to England

Greece - Crete - Stephanie Luggage

If you’re headed to England, I have an entire  packing list  that goes over exactly what to bring with you. However, here are five items you don’t want to forget!

The   Lonely Planet Great Britain   guidebook for your trip. It can be kind of a pain to find the major guidebooks once you land, or you’ll find them overpriced. I always like to pick mine up ahead of time.

An Unlocked  Cell Phone   so that you can use a British sim card while here to help navigate public transportation.

Backup Charging Bank  for your cell phone since you’ll be using it as a camera, GPS, and general travel genie.

A Camera  since London is super photogenic. I use a mix of my  Nikon D810  and my   Samsung8  smartphone these days.

A Great Day Bag   so you can carry what you need with you (like your camera, snacks, water, sunscreen, cash, etc). My current favorite is the  Pacsafe Citysafe , which is especially great for cities because it has many anti-theft features designed to deter pickpockets. It also transitions to a night bag more easily and won’t embarrass you if you go to dinner directly after sightseeing all day.

Don’t Forget About Travel Insurance!

Before you leave for England make sure you have a valid  Travel Insurance Policy  because accidents happen on the road. I pay for  World Nomads,  and I happily recommend them. It’s especially important to get travel insurance if you’ll be hanging out in cities where tourists can easily become the targets of pickpockets.

Your Itinerary

With our hand-picked local guides collecting you from Exeter St David’s station at 11am, we travel straight to Chagford for lunch, before walking into the northern section of Dartmoor’s stunning National Park. Our itinerary takes us to the ancient Scorhill Stone Circle, then onto the vast expanse of Dartmoor, where we hike on the moor and through vibrant woodland. In the evening, we make our way to the village of Chagford and settle into our hotel, The Three Crowns Inn.

Trekking high into the Dartmoor National Park, up to the spectacular granite Haytor and Hound Tor, we begin our second day with incredible views all the way to the South Devon coast. After making our descent, we stop for lunch in the pretty town of Bovey Tracey, before embarking on a woodland walk tracing the North Teign River. We finish the day by returning to Chagford.

We transfer to Cornwall, making for the idyllic coastal town of Padstow. Catching the foot ferry across the Camel Estuary to the small seaside village of Rock, we walk through the sand dunes to the partially buried St Enodoc Church. Still in use to this day, Sir John Betjeman once famously wrote that its peculiar spire was “bent like a crooked witch’s hat.” Our itinerary then sees us spend the afternoon walking the idyllic beaches of Polzeath and Daymer Bay, before returning to Padstow toward the end of the afternoon. For fans of Doc Martin, there’ll also be ample opportunity to visit the beautiful Port Isaac, where the hit show was filmed.

Transferring to the south coast, we walk from the fishing village of Gorran Haven to Mevagissey. This route takes us on the South West Coast Path, a 630-mile trail stretching all the way around Devon and Cornwall’s coastline. Hiking over rugged cliffs, through lush fields and attractive seaside villages and harbours, we stop to explore the magical Lost Gardens of Heligan. With the afternoon drawing to a close, we head back to Padstow to feast on Rick Stein’s famous fish and chips.

From Padstow, we set out again along the coastal path. Climbing the cliffs up to Stepper Point, we pass the observatory, enjoying panoramic views of ocean, town and estuary. Watch out for peregrine falcons, the fastest birds in the world, which have been known to nest in the area. We then traverse the coast and local beaches, before having lunch in Trevone, Harlyn Bay or even Constantine Bay. Catching the bus across the headland back to Padstow, we’ll have plenty of time to explore the town, with further walking options available for those keen to keep moving. At the end of the day, we return to the hotel for our last evening together.

After a relaxed breakfast, we say our farewells. Our guides can transport you to Bodmin Parkway railway station for any onward travel you may have planned or to collect any vehicles left at Exeter St David’s. Wherever your journey takes you next, we’ll be on hand to provide all the help you need.

Where is Devon and Cornwall? Cornwall is in the far South West of England, bordered by the famous English Channel and Celtic Sea. Known for its natural beauty, rugged coastline, idyllic coastal villages, beaches and walking and cycling trails, Cornwall is an outdoor enthusiast’s ideal playground!

Devon is Cornwall’s wild neighbour, with craggy coasts to the North and South and ancient hills on Dartmoor! It has inspired authors and painters from afar and is a beautiful area in all weathers.

What is the best way to get to Devon and Cornwall? The best way out of London and into Devon and Cornwall is by train. From Paddington direct to Exeter St David’s or Tiverton Parkway in around 2 hours, or continue to Bodmin Parkway in 4 hours. The South West is also easily accessible from Bristol and the Midlands by train. If you prefer to drive, there is station parking available at all train stations.

To get a bit deeper into both counties it is easy to get a taxi from the train station.

Carbon footprint.

What’s the Number? Nearly everything has a carbon footprint. Together with ecollective, we’ve measured the carbon impact of not only every tour we operate but our entire business. We’ve taken into account greenhouse gas emissions across the business including office, travel, website, vehicles, accommodation, activities, food, suppliers…

What does the number mean? We’re going to improve this by measuring and reducing our footprint each year. That means working with our suppliers to make changes that have a more positive impact on us and the planet. What does this look like in reality?

  • Redesign trips to reduce our carbon impact
  • Working closely with all our suppliers across England to join us on our decarbonisation journey
  • Switching up our vehicle fleet to electric
  • Investing in projects that permanently remove carbon from the atmosphere for any emissions that remain.

We’ve got a long way to go but we’re on our way to net-zero

We’re committed to reducing our impact on the planet and working towards a sustainable future. We’ve taken ownership of our carbon footprint and are on a mission to reduce our emissions year on year.

This five or six day tour will give you the ultimate insight into the counties of Devon and Cornwall, two of the most beautiful and interesting counties in England.

Each day will celebrate different aspects of these highly regarded areas, whether it be the coast, the history, the moorland, the communities, the way of life, or any other aspect of these wonderfully varied places.

The suggested itinerary can be adjusted to suit you and your preferences, and of course we will ensure that you have the best possible tour that money can by, as we do for each and every one of our guests.

Day 1: The Ultimate Dartmoor Experience

The River Dart running through Bellever on Dartmoor

One of the real gems of the Southwest of England, Dartmoor National Park offers endless opportunities of things to see and do within its 368 square mile boundaries, and this day gives us the perfect chance to enjoy some of these.

This will be a wonderfully varied tour that encompasses so much of what Dartmoor is about, including myths and legends, bronze age settlements, beautiful views, country inns, desolate moorland and cream teas! Leave it to us to create your perfect day, or let us know what interests you in particular, and we can put together a day to suit you.

Day 2: The Jurassic Coast Day

Charmouth in Dorset

The Jurassic Coast is a beautiful stretch of coastline that runs for just over 95 miles from Exmouth in Devon, through to Studland Bay in Dorset. It is celebrated as a UNESO World Heritage site due to its geological significance, but it is also very blessed with beauty and other aspects of interest.

On this day, we drive along much of this incredible coastline, visiting coves, beaches, villages and towns along the way, all of them with their own stories to tell. We stop briefly at the town of Exmouth, the starting point of the Jurassic Coast. Then we head along to the charming old seaside town of Budleigh Salterton. We then head inland to East Budleigh to see the village in which Sir Walter Raleigh was brought up, before moving along to Sidmouth, Branscombe and Beer. Our final stop of the day will be over the border into Dorset to visit Charmouth, where we will have the opportunity to do some fossil hunting*, and perhaps take back a handful of the wonderful ancient artefacts that we find on the beach.

Day 3: The Devon Cultural Tour

Guests at The Garden House

Devon offers plenty of opportunity to seek some culture, whether it be a visit to a historic building, wandering through a beautiful garden, or spending time in a museum or the back streets of an ancient community.

This is an entirely flexible day, so the itinerary below is just an example of the kind of day we can put together for you.

Day 4: The Coastal Charms of North Cornwall

Port Isaac in North Cornwall

This day will be all about enjoying the enchanting communities of the North Cornwall coast, where history and heritage combine with charm, folklore and popular television series!

During the day we'll pay visits to Port Isaac and Tintagel, and if time allows, Boscastle.

Day 5: West Coast of Cornwall Heritage

Porthcurno in North Cornwall

This is a tour that celebrates the heritage, beauty and history of this wonderful and wild peninsula of Cornwall. Tin mining, Poldark locations, a clifftop theatre, pretty coves, and so much more can be included on this day.

During the day we will enjoy visiting the likes of St. Michael's Mount, the Minack Theatre, Mousehole, Botallack Tin Mine, and St. Ives. We won't necessarily be able to fit each and every one of these in, but it can be tailored to suit your preferences.

Day 6: The South Devon Relaxation Day

Relaxing at Slapton Sands

Please don't forget that you're meant to be on holiday! This day is designed to make sure that you have a relaxation day, albeit a stimulating and enjoyable one. There won't be too much driving, and you'll have the opportunity to really switch off.

We'll visit a vineyard, where you can sit back and enjoy a wine and cheese tasting. We'll take you on a guided tour of a ruined castle, where you'll gain a greater appreciation for what life was like many centuries ago. Lunch will be relaxed and tasty, of course, and in the afternoon we can enjoy a steam train ride, before taking some time towards the end of the day for a bit of retail therapy at one of our best local shopping centres.

Devon band taking the charts by storm

Torquay-based Kris Barras Band are hoping to secure a Top 10 hit by the end of the week

  • 16:00, 18 APR 2024

Kris Barras is fighting his way into the Top 10 UK album charts

Torquay-based Kris Barras Band are celebrating having reached number four in the mid-week UK official album charts. It is the first time the rock band have reached the Top 10 and they are battling for an even higher ranking among the likes of James, Mark Knopfler and Manic Street Preachers.

Also jostling for top positions are the Linkin Park singles collection, Gun, and English Teacher. Currently sitting at number one are the Libertines with their latest release All Quiet on the Eastern Esplanade having knocked off Beyonce's Cowboy Carter off the top spot.

Kris Barras Band, headed up by former MMA fighter turned rock star Kris Barras, released fifth album Halo Effect last Friday, April 12. It follows the band kicking off their latest tour with a sold-out homecoming gig at The Foundry in Torquay on Saturday, April 6.

Wild nights in Torquay: 29 photos of iconic moments

Fans were the first to be treated to a special 'listening party' of the new album played in its entirety ahead of its release. Kris, who was born and raised in Torquay and still lives there, started writing the album when the band were on tour early last year.

The Kris Barras Band

He told DevonLive: "Josiah (guitar player/ producer) and I set up a studio in the top lounge of the tour bus and we were in there most days, getting ideas down. It felt like such a creative time, we were feeding off the audiences each night and the whole thing just felt really inspired."

Hoping for the album to be a confirmed Top 10 hit in the UK charts come the end of this week, he said: "It's certainly the dream for that to happen, but who knows yet. We've certainly never had a response to an album like this before though.

"It has reached a lot of new fans during the campaign with the single releases and the reviews online have all been amazing. I'm proud of all of the songs equally.

"If I had to pick my favourite song though, I would say 'With You'. It's got all the elements that I like in a song; big riff, big chorus, and some different production type things in there that we haven't done on record before.

"I actually wrote the chorus to this one on a plane, flying out to play at Rockharz Festival in Germany. Inspiration can hit you at the strangest of times."

The band are now signed to a long-term recording agreement with independent rock label Earache Record. Kris has revealed that when they signed to them the album was already written and halfway through being recorded.

He said: "It means there wasn't any influence on the sound from them but they have been great to work with though with lots of fresh ideas and they have been really supportive.

"They are just a great team of genuine music lovers. They have a great reputation as leaders in the rock/ metal world, so I think it's the perfect home for me moving forward."

Kris's biggest love, aside from making music, is performing live and being back home in Torquay with his family and friends.

Kris Barras Band at The Foundry in Torquay

He said: "I live for playing live, so it's great to be getting back out there. Kicking off the tour with an album launch party in my hometown was amazing.

"To think I used to spend my weekends playing around the bay in pubs and now I sell 800 tickets for a sold-out show at The Foundry is mind-blowing. It was the perfect way to kick off the tour and celebrate the new album.

"The atmosphere was electric. We did a playback of the album in its entirety to start off the evening. It was the first time that people could hear the album, a week before its release.

"The actual show itself was amazing. It's such a great venue. I had my wife, mum, and sisters there as well as a bunch of my mates from Fightworx Gym, so that was cool."

Despite his busy schedule and many bands opting to relocate to London to pursue music careers, Kris's roots remain firmly in Devon.

exeter devon tour

He said: "Pretty much all of my time is in Torquay when I'm not on tour. I've lived here my whole life with the exception of a few longer excursions abroad. I'm fairly happy living down here and a suitable opportunity to move away hasn't really presented itself, so I'll be around for the foreseeable future!

"When the sun is shining, Torquay is a stunning place to live. I love being by the sea and being able to walk to a beach. It's perfect for me.

"I think the town centre needs a big shake-up; it's a real shame to see the high street just falling apart, but high streets are struggling all over, it's not just a Torquay thing. My favourite places are Hopes Nose for peace and quiet and Labrador Bay for dog walks."

Looking ahead to what promises to be an even bigger and more successful future, Kris said: "I just want to keep moving forward. I'm happiest whenever I'm playing live on stage, so I just want to keep on doing that and hopefully watch the audiences grow."

Kris Barras

Kris grew up influenced by his father, Paul Barras, who was also a musician himself. In August 2014, after competing in 20 professional Muay Thai and MMA fights, Barras retired to concentrate on training other fighters. In early 2015, he began writing songs and formed the Kris Barras Band, performing a mixture of southern rock, blues, and country music styles.

After releasing a self-titled demo EP in 2015, the band recorded their first full-length album Lucky 13, released in April 2016. The album was self-released and recorded by Kris in his own studio in Torquay. It led to the band performing at several large festivals.

In December 2017, the band signed to Mascot Label Group and released album The Divine and Dirty in March 2018. The album reached number three in the Official Charts UK Jazz/ Blues and number 72 in the UK iTunes charts for all genres.

The album won Best Album in the 38th European Blues Awards. The band were also the winners of the Best New Band in the 2019 Planet Rock Radio The Rocks 2019 awards.

The success of this album led to tours with artists such as Beth Hart, Joanne Shaw Taylor and Gun. Kris was named as one of The 17 Best Blues Guitarists in the World by MusicRadar. He was voted number 13, alongside names such as Joe Bonamassa and John Mayer.

In September 2019, the band released third studio album, Light It Up through Provogue Records. The album reached number 30 on British iTunes, number 49 in the Official UK Charts as well as number one on the UK Independent Album Breakers Chart.

Next album Death Valley Paradise was released through Mascot Records in March 2022, and debuted at number 27 on the UK Albums Chart.

Kris and Josiah from the band will be back on their home turf again in Devon on Sunday, April 21, at The Cavern in Exeter as part of a meet and greet and acoustic gig. It is to promote indie store only CD, Halo Effect - Piano & Acoustic Edition, which includes alternative artwork alongside five bonus acoustic and piano versions of album tracks. Kris and Josiah will do a short acoustic set and meet fans for autographs and photos.

The record label has secured a deal with iTunes for fans to pick up the album for only £4.99 this week at https://music.apple.com/gb/album/halo-effect/1717111429 . It is also available to purchase from Amazon. For details of the acoustic gig at Exeter Cavern, click here.

Although we were disappointed in the declining quality of food, we found the service, friendliness of the staff, food presentation, & entertainment to be excellent. The itinerary was excellent as well. We did an independent tour with Tours of Guernsey which was outstanding. Our guide was very knowledgable, friendly, & professional. We visited the German Underground Hospital, a WWII museum & the Little Chapel. The Little Chapel was closed when we arrived but our guide was kind enough to check when it would reopen so we were able to return to see it. Those on the Princess tour who arrived when it was locked did not get that opportunity. Unfortunately we learned that Princess no longer plans to include Guernsey on its itinerary. We believe that this is a mistake since the island was both interesting, beautiful and its people exceptionally friendly. We hope Princess reconsiders their decision & keeps Guernsey on its itinerary since we'd love to return their again. In Portland, UK, we booked the Jurassic Coast Adventure with Dorset Tours. This is a relatively new company which goes out of its way to provide an excellent tour of the beautiful coast, Weymouth, & Portland. Spencer was an excellent guide who was friendly, informative, & professional. Don't hesitate to book a tour with Dorset Tours. Read more Written September 11, 2023

We've been coming to n.wales for many years but still haven't seen much of Angelsey and this was a perfect way to conjole 2 competitive teens ( and a competitive mum) into exploring the island and visiting all sorts of fascinating places we wouldn't have otherwise visited! There is a LOT of content for the price and we found that it took us one whole day just to go from Beaumaris up the right coast, so probably about a sixth of the available content. Australia bring in former Lion to strengthen line-out before 2025 tour

Geoff Parling, the former England second-row and set-piece expert, has been confirmed as Australia’s new line-out coach.

Parling, 40, has been based in Australia since joining the Melbourne Rebels as a player in 2018, and previously worked as a Wallabies assistant coach under Dave Rennie in 2020.

He will now go up against England head coach Steve Borthwick later this year, another line-out guru, when the Wallabies face England at Twickenham on November 9. The pair did not overlap as England team-mates, with Borthwick’s last cap coming in the 2010 Six Nations and Parling making his debut in 2012.

Part of the British and Irish Lions series win over Australia in 2013, Parling is currently the Melbourne Rebels forwards coach and has been an assistant for six seasons. He won 29 caps for England, while his final game in English rugby came in the 2017 Premiership final with Exeter Chiefs, defeating Wasps in extra time.

Parling will link up with Joe Schmidt, the former Ireland head coach who took over from Eddie Jones following last year’s Rugby World Cup.

“I spoke to Joe a couple times when he came to the Rebels. I heard a lot of good things about Joe in the past so I’m really excited to work with him on the coaching team,” Parling said. “He’s very level-headed, consistently sees the game and preps well. I think he’s good on basics and getting the fundamentals right. Once you get those, a little bit of brilliance will come.

“I’m pretty familiar with the majority of players that will come in from either coaching or coaching against them regularly. I feel like the little bits of differences we have in Super Rugby teams can be well put together and aligned, we can have a great force as a forward pack at the Wallabies.”

Schmidt said of Parling: “Geoff has spent more than 20 years, playing and coaching in the professional game. His understanding of the line-out, along with his Super Rugby knowledge, and previous experience with the Wallabies will add value to our coaching group.”

Parling’s Australia stint could be England’s future gain

When Exeter brought Geoff Parling to Devon nearly a decade ago, Rob Baxter said that the club were signing more than just a player. They wanted his influence on the club’s young guns, identifying Parling as the kind of character who could improve the team on the field and help bring along many players off it. During those two years with Exeter he also spent time working with Taunton Titans, a future of coaching very much on his mind.

Which is all a long way of saying Thursday’s announcement confirming that Parling has been appointed to a Test coaching staff comes as no surprise. From the moment he left Exeter in the best possible circumstances after winning the club’s first Premiership title, Parling has been on a journey to learn and develop into a top coach, playing briefly in Japan before settling for the past six years in Melbourne with the Rebels as both a set-piece and forwards coach.

Steve Borthwick would no doubt approve. A stint abroad coaching Test rugby with Japan under Eddie Jones marked the start of Borthwick’s next career, before returning to coach England with Jones after the 2015 Rugby World Cup. Borthwick never coached against England during his stint with the Brave Blossoms but Parling certainly will, returning to Twickenham in the autumn, the same venue where he was part of England’s 2015 Rugby World Cup defeat to Australia. A reunion with the Lions next year is also fascinating, given Parling started the final two Tests on the 2013 tour alongside Alun Wyn Jones against the Wallabies.

The hope of course is that England will eventually benefit from a young coach learning his trade overseas at a high level and eventually returning to offer that expertise to either a Gallagher Premiership club or the national team, just as New Zealand, South Africa and Australia have done over the past two decades by sending coaches to the north.

Parling in his introductory video noted the influence on his career of Mike Cron, the scrum guru who worked for a long time with the All Blacks, with Parling contacting Cron while he was still a player and asking if Cron would mentor him as he moved into coaching. Now the two are part of the same backroom staff, joined by another wise head in Laurie Fisher. Alongside analyst Eoin Toolan, the group under a smart hand in Joe Schmidt have been tasked with reviving the Wallabies following their disastrous Rugby World Cup campaign.

Further down the road the table is set for a fascinating line-out duel between Parling and Borthwick in the autumn, two line-out gurus pitting their wits against each other looking for the upper hand.
