How to Watch Star Trek: Prodigy Now That It's Been Removed From Paramount+

The swift erasure of the star trek animated series by paramount now means your options are very limited..

Image for article titled How to Watch Star Trek: Prodigy Now That It's Been Removed From Paramount+

Paramount apparently couldn’t wait more than a weekend after its shocking decision to both renege on the season two greenlight for Star Trek: Prodigy and remove its entire first season from its Paramount+ streaming service : the animated Trek series, barely a year old, has now been removed from “the home of Star Trek .” But if you still want to watch it, there’s still options.

Related Content

Is star trek: prodigy streaming on paramount+ anymore.

As of today, June 26—just three days after Paramount’s announcement that it would remove Prodigy from its streaming platform, alongside several other titles— Star Trek: Prodigy is no longer streaming on the service in the U.S. It is currently as of this writing still streaming in international markets where Paramount+ is available, but presumably not for much longer.

Can I Buy Star Trek: Prodigy Physically?

Yes and no: or at least, you can buy some of it. Paramount released DVD and Blu-ray copies of the first 10 episodes of Prodigy ’s first season earlier this year, but in the wake of the news of its cancellation and removal, those physical releases are now suddenly harder to come by—they’re both currently out of stock on Amazon, for example.

Episodes 11-20 were never announced as getting a physical release, and that now remains unlikely.

Can I Buy Star Trek: Prodigy Digitally?

The first 10 episodes of Prodigy can be purchased digitally through Amazon Prime Video (where all 20 could be previously accessed through Amazon’s storefront if you subscribed to Paramount+). I n the U.S., the first half of the season is also a vailable to purchase on Apple TV , Vudu , Youtube TV , and Google Play . If you’re based in the UK, the full season one is currently available to purchase through the Sky Store , as well as through Apple TV, Youtube TV, and Google Play.

What Will Happen to Star Trek: Prodigy Season 2?

Star Trek: Prodigy ’s second season, originally planned to hit Paramount+ this winter , had largely finished post-production on 20 more episodes. While those episodes will not air on Paramount+ any more, the team behind Prodigy has expressed the intent to finish the episodes, with the hopes of CBS Studios being able to sell both season one and season two to a new buyer. It’s currently unknown how long that process will take, if a buyer is found.

Could Star Trek: Prodigy Return to Paramount+?

The short answer is that we don’t know, especially if streaming rights are ultimately sold to another service for now. While Paramount is the latest in a host of major streamers, including Warner Bros.’ Max and Disney’s Disney+ , to remove streaming originals from their platforms as financial impairment charges— tax write-offs that cover the no-longer-needed charges to host these assets as-is—we don’t know the details of how long the impairment period will last, meaning that while Prodigy could eventually return to the service, it’s definitely not going to be any time soon.

Update 6/27/2023: This post has been updated to reflect that now only the first 10 episodes of Star Trek: Prodigy are available for purchase on Amazon Prime Video in the U.S..

Set in the year 2383, a disparate bunch of alien teens commandeer an abandoned vessel, the USS Protostar. Guided by the hologrammatic version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew, reprising her role from Voyager), Roh-Tahk, Dal, Jankom, Murf and friends go on a series of adventures across the galaxy, heading for Federation space.

The series features a wildly colorful cast of characters. Rylee Alazraqui voices Rok-Tahk, an animal-loving humanoid. Brett Gray is 17-year-old “maverick” Dal, and Angus Imrie plays a genderless energy-based lifeform called Zero. Meanwhile, Dee Bradley Baker as Murf is basically an indestructible blob, while Big Mouth’s Jason Mantzoukas has been perfectly cast as a quarrelsome Tellarite.

Star Trek: Prodigy

  • View history

Star Trek: Prodigy is an animated series that premiered on 28 October 2021 , first on the streaming service Paramount+ , then on Nickelodeon , [1] a conglomerate sister broadcasting channel. It is the ninth Star Trek spin-off and the third animated Star Trek series, following Star Trek: The Animated Series and Star Trek: Lower Decks . Unlike the previous animated series, this is the first to be rendered entirely with computer-generated imaging and 3D modeling. Previously, the Star Trek: Short Treks episode " The Girl Who Made the Stars " was produced in a similar fashion. Two seasons were produced before the series' cancellation on 23 June 2023 .

Alex Kurtzman stated that unlike Lower Decks , Prodigy will be kid-focused with an " entirely different perspective and an entirely different tone, " adding, " What's exciting about it is not only looking at each animated series as what's the different tone, but what's the different technology we can apply to these things so that visually they're entirely different? " [6]

In February 2019, it was announced Nickelodeon had entered talks to air the show, and Trollhunters writers and executive producers Kevin and Dan Hageman had boarded the project. [7]

On 24 April 2019 , it was revealed that the series would indeed air (but not debut) on Nickelodeon and focus on a group of lawless teenage characters finding a derelict Starfleet ship which they use to " search for adventure, meaning and salvation. " [8]

In May 2019, CBS filed trademarks for the titles " Star Trek: Section 31 " and " Star Trek: Prodigy ", with posts on Reddit later in the year attaching the Prodigy title to the second animated series. [9]

On 23 July 2020, it was revealed that the show would, in fact, be named Star Trek: Prodigy , and that it would air on Nickelodeon in 2021. [10] [11] The premiere episode did air on the channel on 17 December 2021, but on that occasion it was an one-time-only affair. [12] It was eventually announced that the first ten episodes (parts 1 and 2) would belatedly air regularly on a repetitive basis on the broadcaster in the home market one year later, starting on 8 July 2022 . [13]

In 2022 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for "Outstanding Animated Series" in the inaugural Children’s & Family Emmy Awards , and won the Emmy for "Outstanding Individual Achievement in Production Design." [14]

In 2023 , Prodigy 's first season was nominated for a Television Critics Association Award in "Outstanding Achievement in Family Programming," a category with both animated and live action content intended for family and young adult audiences. [15]

Development

In July 2019 , the Hagemans announced the full writers' room for the show. [20] Among those revealed to be writing the series are Trollhunters writer-producers Aaron Waltke and Chad Quandt , The 100 writer-producers Shawna Benson and Julie Benson , Black Sails writer Lisa Boyd , Shades of Blue writer Nikhil Jayaram , and Diandra Pendleton-Thompson .

In October 2019 , Kurtzman said that this series will be animated in a digital 3D style, like Ninjago or Trollhunters , as opposed to the more "cartoon" look of Star Trek: Lower Decks . He also confirmed that the series had been picked up for a two-season order, and that a title had been chosen for the series, but he was not yet ready to reveal it. [21]

In the same interview, Heather Kadin said that, due to the time-consuming process of 3D animation, the series would likely air later than 2021 . Kadin also emphasized that the Hagemans' writing style will be accessible to kids without patronizing them or alienating their parents:

" The reason we went to the Hagemans is because if you've seen their work, you know that they're not writing " Muppet Babies ". It's not "Little Spock and Little Kirk." It's not playing down [to viewers] that way. " " Even [with] their characters in Ninjago – they are teenagers – I was able to watch that with my kids and they write with a very epic quality. They tell stories the way we tell stories in live action: serialized, turning over cards… " " I think it will be a great way for fans to introduce the franchise to their kids, and for new fans to be formed, because it's such a big franchise, [it can be hard] to get into as a kid. " [22]

In an October 2020 interview with Trek Report , producer and writer Aaron Waltke said that Prodigy aims to bridge the gap between old and new iterations of the Star Trek franchise , with a series that strikes a tone of hope and idealism. [23]

" It's been exhilarating to make a series that honors classic Trek for legacy fans like myself, but also provides an entry point for new audiences to be introduced to the world of the Federation and its aspirations for an idealistic future, even when facing adversity. Writing the return of our beloved Voyager captain feels oddly iconic, like a homecoming for me. And we hope to create something both young and old can watch together… just as I once did with my dad all those many years ago. " [24]

In February 2021 , it was announced that Prodigy would debut on Paramount+ in 2021. An image of the alien bridge crew was also released. [25]

On First Contact Day in April 2021 , the Hagemans revealed that the series will be set in the Delta Quadrant in 2383 . They also revealed an image of Captain Janeway as she will appear in the series, and explained that the character will appear as an emergency training hologram on board the starship. A new summary of the series' premise was also released:

Prodigy " will follow a motley crew of young aliens who must figure out how to work together while navigating a greater galaxy, in search for a better future. These six young outcasts know nothing about the ship they have commandeered – a first in the history of the Star Trek Franchise – but over the course of their adventures together, they will each be introduced to Starfleet and the ideals it represents. " [26]

In May 2021 , more details about the cast were released, with the main voice cast revealed. [27]

On 23 July 2021 , a teaser trailer was released during the Paramount+ Star Trek Comic-Con@Home panel, revealing the first animated footage of the series along with the first look and name of the vessel, the USS Protostar . [28]

The series' opening title sequence was publicly released on 31 August 2021 , as part of a Paramount+ presentation to the Television Critics Association . This presentation also confirmed that the series' theme music had been composed by Michael Giacchino , and the music for the series would be composed by Nami Melumad . [29]

Star Trek Prodigy - Meet the Cast

In June 2019 , Eaglemoss/Hero Collector 's project manager Ben Robinson indicated that the company would manufacture starship miniatures from this series, [30] though that intent was thwarted by the company's bankruptcy on 5 August 2022.

On 13 July 2021 , ViacomCBS Consumer Products and Playmates Toys jointly announced that the latter had acquired new licensing for "action figures, vehicles and ships, role play and other toy categories," and slated the first of these products for retail release in 2022. Among other Star Trek series and films, this licensing encompasses Star Trek: Prodigy , Star Trek: Lower Decks , Star Trek: Discovery , and Star Trek: Picard . [31]

On 18 August 2022 , it was announced that two new tie-in books, Supernova (also the title of a video game releasing in October 2022 ) and A Dangerous Trade would be released on 17 January 2023 . [32]

Cancellation and pick-up

On 23 June 2023, Prodigy was cancelled by Paramount+. While Season 2 was allowed to finish post-production, it, along with the series as a whole, would be sold to any interested third-party outsider. [33] The series removal from Paramount+ was effectuated three days later, on 26 June 2023. [34] The series was on Nickelodeon already on a broadcast hiatus, and therefore not to return afterwards. [2]

Paramount did not provide a clear reason for the completely unexpected cancellation. News sites such as TrekMovie.com , ScreenRant, and Inverse suggested that the cancellation was motivated by cost-cutting measures and tax write-offs, whereas Paramount itself had intimated in a statement to TrekMovie.com that it was part of clearing the way of the upcoming merger of Paramount+ with Showtime by " refining our content offering to deliver the best streaming experience for subscribers ". Paramount concurrently assured TrekMovie.com that it remained stoutly "invested in growing the Star Trek franchise". The decision to place Prodigy outside the realm of that same franchise and offer it up to third-party outsiders however, was counter to their " Star Trek Universe" all-under-one-roof franchise umbrella concept instituted at the start of 2021 . [35] [36] [37]

On 21 July 2023 , showrunner Aaron Waltke announced on his Twitter account that the entire first season had become available for digital purchase at digital vendors like Prime Video , ITunes Store , Google, and others. Up until that point only the first ten episodes had been available, which was conforming to the recent physical PRO Season 1, Volume 1 DVD and Blu-ray home video format releases. [38] While the franchise had intimated that the series had not performed to expectations, Prodigy had managed in the meantime to gather a fanbase of its own, which had resulted in a run on the DVD and Blu-ray stocks still available at retailers at the time of the cancellation announcement, causing them to sell out quickly in the home market. [39]

Aside from that, this fanbase also tried to organize an online campaign to save the series. [40] On 24 August 2023 , in an effort to find the show another home, a fan raised US$1,200 on GoFundMe to have an airplane tow a banner reading, "#SAVE STAR TREK PRODIGY" over the Los Angeles offices of streaming services Netflix , Amazon Prime , and Hulu . [41] A drawing with the same hashtag is set to be among the items going to space on a Blue Origin (part of the empire of Amazon founder Jeff Bezos ) flight. [42]

Kevin Hageman expressed in an interview that his desire was to see a third season come to fruition, that will eventually lead up to an animated film series. [43]

On 11 October 2023 , it was Netflix that announced that they had picked up Prodigy , with season two set to premier in 2024 , [44] [45] after season one had debuted on the streaming service later in 2023 on 25 December. [46] [47] A consequence of this is that if Hageman is to see his hopes for post-season two productions come true, he has to convince Netflix to pay for the entirety of the production costs, as the franchise itself has distanced itself from Prodigy . [3] This could turn out to be a tall order for Hageman, considering Netflix's prior experience with the first three seasons of Discovery (see: Netflix: Footnote ), despite Prodigy hardly having caused any division within " Trekdom ", if any at all, as opposed to Discovery .

On behalf of everyone at Paramount+, Nickelodeon, and CBS Studios, we want to thank Kevin and Dan Hageman, Ben Hibon , Alex Kurtzman, and the Secret Hideout team, along with the fantastic cast and crew for all their hard work and dedication bringing the series to life. Star Trek: Prodigy's Brett Gray Prepared For His Role By Keeping Himself In The Dark

The second season of "Star Trek: Prodigy" is still awaiting a release date in North America, although French readers should be able to view it right now on the region-specific France.TV. The story of the cancelation of "Prodigy" is sad for Trekkies, as the kid-centric animated series, created by Kevin and Dan Hageman, was just growing into its own and emerging as a proper "Star Trek" series.

The premise was fun: in an unknown and distant part of the galaxy, a group of teenage aliens -- fleeing slavery in a mine -- discover an abandoned Starfleet vessel called the U.S.S. Protostar. On board, they meet a holographic version of Captain Janeway (Kate Mulgrew), who assumes the teens are Starfleet cadets and require tutelage. The teens are hotheaded, feisty, and brooding in the way that teens tend to be, but Janeway teaches them to operate as a crew and mature as individuals. By the end of the first season, the teens were wearing uniforms and staging dangerous rescue missions.

The ersatz captain of the crew was Dal R'El, played by actor Brett Gray. Dal didn't have a family and didn't even know what species he was. He initially took command out of bluster and unearned confidence but eventually learned to get along with his crew and even came to care for them as friends. Scant exposure to Starfleet ideals was enough to inspire ambition and growth.

It seems that Gray, when preparing for "Prodigy," deliberately didn't do any "Star Trek" research. Gray was not a Trekkie by any stretch and had no working knowledge of the franchise. However, since Dal was also clueless about the details of Starfleet, Gray felt it was fitting to keep his homework to an absolute minimum. Gray admitted as much in a 2022 interview with TrekMovie.

Barely Preparing

Of course, Trekkies would likely prefer to hear from actors that they are as learned in "Star Trek" as most diehard fans. "Star Trek" is a vast and complicated universe and I think many Trekkies would be comforted to know that the actors they watch every week are just as sensitive to continuity as they are. Not so with Gray. When asked about how much "Star Trek" knowledge he entered "Prodigy" with, Gray was frank, saying:

"You're not going like this answer. I tried to barely prepare it all. I was really nervous coming into it. I thought maybe I should watch every 'Star Trek' and I should go learn about everything; see who the people are and things like that. But as I was reading the scripts for the first season, I realized that I could discover this all as myself with Dal. I don't know if that was the right way to do it but I feel like it's freed me up so much."

To be fair, ignorance would actually aid Gray in creating a character like Dal. If the character had never heard of Starfleet, then it would stand to reason that the actor shouldn't have either. Dal and Gray could, then, go on parallel growth arcs, learning about "Star Trek" through snippets of knowledge, all while offering their own eye-rolling, irreverent viewpoint. Dal didn't find Starfleet sacred, allowing Gray, as he said, to do more with his character. Indeed, when it came to a known element of "Star Trek" narration, Gray said that his ignorance impressed the producers.

'I Don't Even Know What A Captain's Log Is'

Gray went on to relate a story about his unique read of the classic "Star Trek" exposition device -- the captain's log:

"I remember my first captain's log -- I don't know if you've heard any of them, but they're getting better -- but when I first started them it was super flippant and the producers loved it. They said, 'Wow, these are usually done very matter-of-factly and super seriously, did you choose to do that?' And I was like, 'I don't even know what a captain's log is!' I think in some ways, it's freed me up to bring some freshness and to bring some life into these characters in a different way than we've seen before."

Indeed, "Prodigy" is one of the most in-depth examples of an outsider character learning about Starfleet for the first time. Gray reinforced that he and Dal were learning at the same time.

In June 2023, it was announced that "Star Trek: Prodigy" had been canceled and that the show would be removed from Paramount+. This came as an utter shock to the "Prodigy" cast and crew . They were given leeway to finish the second season, but there was to be no more "Prodigy" after that. Currently, "Prodigy" is available on Netflix. The sudden removal of "Prodigy" was the first sign that Paramount had invested too much in "Star Trek" and that the franchise needed to contract . "Picard" is over, "Prodigy" and "Discovery" have been canceled, and "Section 31" was transformed from a series into a movie.

Those of us outside of France will have to wait and see if Dal truly grows up.

Screen Rant

5 seasons of star trek is the new 7, unfortunately.

Star Trek: Discovery and Lower Decks ending at 5 seasons seems to be a Star Trek show's new standard instead of the TNG era's 7 seasons.

  • Star Trek shows on Paramount+ now typically last up to 5 seasons due to the changing TV landscape in the era of streaming.
  • Shorter seasons allow creators to focus on quality over quantity, resulting in better episodes without filler content.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a critical and fan favorite, likely to last 5 seasons with its successful storytelling and characters.

5 seasons seems to be the new normal for Star Trek shows on Paramount+ instead of the 7 seasons of the Star Trek: The Next Generation era. The television landscape has undergone numerous changes since Star Trek: The Original Series premiered in 1966, and the rise of streaming, in particular, has changed the way people watch TV. With its seven-season run, Star Trek: The Next Generation established a pattern that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Star Trek: Voyager followed. With around 26 episodes per season, all three TNG -era Star Trek shows produced well over 100 episodes, but that amount of content is likely no longer achievable by Star Trek .

Star Trek: Discovery will come to a close with its currently-streaming season 5, and the upcoming f Star Trek: Lower Decks season 5 will also be its last. Aside from Star Trek: Picard , which was always meant to run for three seasons, five seasons appears to be the new Star Trek threshold. Star Trek TV shows are now all streaming series, and streaming follows a different business model than network TV shows, typically having shorter episode counts and fewer seasons. This allows for streaming shows to have bigger budgets and, in Star Trek' s case, Paramount+'s shows are produced like feature films, which results in higher-quality content.

Every Upcoming Star Trek Movie & TV Show

Why star trek shows on paramount+ only last 5 seasons, in the era of streaming, 5 seasons is a solid run..

While some network shows continue to have 20+ episode seasons, streaming series like Star Trek generally produce about half that. With all of the various streaming services, there is more content available for viewers than there has ever been, and with that comes more competition. Plus, television shows are more expensive than they used to be , particularly genre shows like Star Trek , with their state-of-the-art starships and exotic alien locales. In the cut-throat era of streaming, a new show is lucky to be renewed for season 2, let alone season 5. Five seasons is a good run, especially when each show is given enough time for a proper ending.

While Star Trek shows with only five seasons may seem disappointing to longtime fans, shorter episode counts allow the series' creators to spend more time and money on each episode, which results in less filler. With their longer seasons, Star Trek's TNG -era shows sometimes ran out of money or time, resulting in some lower-quality episodes. Star Trek: The Original Series only ran for three seasons (although the shortest of those contained 24 episodes), and it has its fair share of middling to bad episodes. Shorter and fewer seasons allow for higher-quality episodes with feature film-quality production values.

Modern television dramas tend to be more serialized than episodic, and serialization lends itself to shorter episode counts.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Will Probably Run 5 Seasons

Strange new worlds has been a resounding success among fans and critics..

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has already been renewed for season 4, and it has become one of the most successful modern Star Trek shows. Not only has Strange New Worlds received almost universal praise among critics (it currently has 98% on Rotten Tomatoes), but it has also been a hit with fans and newcomers alike. With its phenomenal cast of characters and its connections to Star Trek canon, it's very likely Strange New Worlds will get a fifth season. In the Star Trek timeline , Strange New Worlds leads directly into Star Trek: The Original Series , meaning it couldn't run forever anyway, but it could conceivably go beyond 5 seasons.

With its experiments with genre and storytelling styles, Strange New Worlds has produced several episodes that will go down as Star Trek classics.

Strange New Worlds is Star Trek at its best. Not only has the show reinvented several classic Sta r Trek characters, but it has also introduced some amazing new characters to canon. With its experiments with genre and storytelling styles, Strange New Worlds has produced several episodes that will go down as Star Trek classics. Hopefully, future Star Trek shows will learn from the success of Strange New Worlds and continue to experiment and push boundaries. Plus, the end of a Star Trek show does not mean an end to those characters. As the Strange New Worlds / Lower Decks crossover proved, characters can always pop up in other shows.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds Season 3 - Everything We Know

Can any other star trek show last 5 seasons, could star trek: prodigy or star trek: starfleet academy make it that long.

Star Trek's next upcoming show, Star Trek: Starfleet Academy , is a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery set in the 32nd century, although little else has been revealed. Starfleet Academy will be aimed more at teenagers and young adults and will focus on hopeful cadets dreaming of being the next to explore the final frontier. It's too early to speculate about how many seasons Starfleet Academy will get, as it is largely dependent on how successful the show becomes. Starfleet Academy showrunners Alex Kurtzman and Noga Landau may have a plan for a certain number of seasons, but it always comes down to the streaming numbers and the business whims of the studio.

A modern Star Trek series is unlikely to produce 100 episodes again as its broadcast predecessors did.

Star Trek: Prodigy was canceled by Paramount+, but was later picked up by Netflix, who plan to release Star Trek: Prodigy season 2 sometime in 2024. Star Trek: Prodigy season 3 is entirely dependent on the streaming numbers of the first two seasons. However, Netflix's decision to pick up Prodigy does set the precedent for canceled Star Trek shows to be picked up by other streaming services. Now ensconced as a streaming franchise, a modern Star Trek series is unlikely to produce 100 episodes again as its broadcast predecessors did. In the modern era of television, it's almost impossible to predict what shows will become hits, but the Star Trek fanbase will hopefully keep the franchise going for many years to come.

Star Trek: Discovery, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, & Star Trek: Lower Decks are available to stream on Paramount+.

'Star Trek: Discovery' season 5 episode 3 'Jinaal' is a slow but steady affair

Humans have evidently evolved beyond the need for stairs in the 32nd century as teleportation has replaced the simple act of actually walking to places

Warning: Spoilers ahead for "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5, episode 3

The latest installment of "Star Trek: Discovery" season 5 on Paramount Plus adds a little water – and possibly some fertilizer – to the various different story seeds sewn last week.

Entitled "Jinaal," the primary plot revolves around a revisit to the planet Trill and as you may recall, the last time we spent any length of time here was the episode " Forget Me Not " (S03, E04), which was not terrible. In fact, it was undeniable highlight of the third season, which itself had some of the best we've seen from "Discovery." Incidentally, that was first look at the Trill homeworld since " Star Trek: Deep Space Nine " episode "Equilibrium" (bizarrely, also S03, E04). (If you need a recap on how to watch Star Trek: Discovery, check out our Star Trek streaming guide for Paramount Plus .)

Curiously, in that episode "Forget Me Not," Dr. Hugh Culber (Wilson Cruz) was given a rare and welcome chance to shine and he does so once again in this episode as well. To briefly recap, Adira (Blu del Barrio) and her lover, a Trill named Gray (Ian Alexander), were aboard a generation ship way back when. They were both orphans, very much in love, and Gray had just received his symbiote when the ship was struck by an asteroid and everyone was ordered to evacuate. Unfortunately, Gray was fatally injured and the only way to save the symbiote was for Adira to join with it. And that's how it was for all of season three right up until the fourth season episode " Choose To Live " (S04, E03).

Then, after all of that, Gray Tal has his consciousness transferred out of Adira and into an artificial synth golem before heading back to Trill to complete all that monk-style studying. And now you're all caught up.

All this has happened before and all of it will happen again. And by the way, Captain Burnham is a Cylon…

While a trip back to Trill is nice, you can't help but start to wonder if this fifth and final season will end up a 10-episode long epilogue as it ties up all its loose ends, almost like season five of " Babylon 5 ."  Commander Jett Reno (Tig Notaro) pops up in this episode at last, which more or less just leaves Commander Nhan (Rachael Ancheril), whom we last saw in the episode " Rubicon " S04, E09, to make an appearance. Although Ancheril's IMDb page does currently say, "Coming up in 2024, Rachael will be seen again in 'Chucky' season three [and] 'Star Trek Discovery' for its final season," so who knows.

The big highlight this week was, as we alluded to above, Cruz's chance to stretch his acting chops just a little bit and he does not disappoint. The two biggest grumbles however, are the dialogue written by a writer who just saw "Lethal Weapon II" for the very first time and that the notion of teleporting around the place instead of just walking, has been taken to ludicrous extremes.

"Star Trek: Discovery" seems to be at peace with lifting from other IPs, sci-fi or otherwise. We've seen a nice " Close Encounters of the Third Kind " reference with mashed potato and we've even seen a fun nod to "Scooby-Doo," but these were all subtle. Then there was the extremely unsubtle " Die Hard " thing and then in " Scavengers " (S03, E06) the writers went  way  beyond homage and practically lifted a set piece directly from the 1987 movie "The Running Man." The premise was the same, the effect was the same and even the setting was practically identical.

Star Trek: Discovery | Final Season Exclusive Clip (CCXP 2023) | Paramount+ - YouTube

This week's insight into what classic movie the Gen-Z writers of "Discovery" have recently discovered comes from a legendary scene with equally legendary dialogue between Sgt. Martin Riggs (Mel Gibson) and Sgt. Roger Murtaugh (Danny Glover) during a rescue attempt after the latter learns that the toilet he's been sitting on has been rigged with a bomb in the first "Lethal Weapon" sequel. Lest we forget, this underrated action extravaganza also gave us Leo Getz and immortalized phrases like "diplomatik immunitee." and "but, but...you're blick."

Still, at least it was just a line or two of dialogue this time and not an entire set piece. My other main grumble with this episode as we mentioned above is the carefree abandon with which transporters are used. And I've touched upon this before. Despite beaming becoming a very common part of everyday life of the 32nd century, to the extent that folk use transporters instead of stairs and even to just change outfits, like we saw in the season four premiere episode — but the thing is, transporters kill you .

The creators of " Star Trek " have never officially confirmed that transporters kill you. However, solely based on the science, transporters do kill you. In simple terms, these teleportation devices scan every molecule in your body and briefly store them in the pattern buffer, while at the same time, the original body is to all intents and purposes, disintegrated. The transporter then converts the scanned copy into energy and beams the data stream to the desired location, where the body is rebuilt, from a sub-atomic level, using technology similar to a replicator. It's comparable in principle to a fax, except this fax machine destroys the original, to prevent duplication, although that has been known to happen.

The Trouble with Transporters - YouTube

The issue is essentially an existential one. Since our bodies are made up of identifiable matter, why won't transference of consciousness occur? What makes our consciousness so unique? What's the difference between an identical copy and you? If you were to put your copy into a different room that you hadn't been into, would you be able to see it? No. It's a perfect copy, but it's not you. There is a good article on Ars Technica that really goes into detail on this.

Still, all of this banter aside, this episode is not ... terrible. It is very evenly paced and that, despite the not-exactly edge-of-seat storyline, makes it bearable. Every sub-story seems to be given equal time and brief-but-enjoyable interplay between Lt. Tilly (Mary Wiseman) and Captain Rayner (Callum Keith Rennie) is fun. Plus, of course, we get to see the Trill homeworld again, which is nice.

In other "Star Trek" news, " Strange New Worlds " has been renewed for a fourth season, while " Lower Decks " will end with its previously announced upcoming fifth season, expected to air sometime this year. Creator Mike McMahan and executive producer Alex Kurtzman posted a statement on the Star Trek website: “While five seasons of any series these days seems like a miracle, it’s no exaggeration to say that every second we've spent making this show has been a dream come true. Our incredible cast, crew and artists have given you everything they have because they love the characters they play, they love the world we've built, and more than anything we all love, love, love Star Trek."

Where once there were four shows airing simultaneously, now there is only one left,

Meanwhile, "Strange New Worlds" is currently in production on its third season, which is set to debut in 2025. It seems that all of this combined with the fact that "Section 31" ended up as a movie , casts doubt over the future of the Starfleet Academy spin-off and hopefully signals the end of the idiotic idea of "Star Trek: Legacy." Perhaps Paramount should look to cancel other ludicrous endeavors like the proposed Picard movie instead of cancelling decent shows in their efforts to tighten purse strings.

The fifth and final season of "Star Trek: Discovery" and every episode of every "Star Trek" show — with the exception of "Star Trek: Prodigy" — currently streams exclusively on Paramount Plus in the US while "Prodigy" has found a new home o n Netflix.

Internationally, the shows are available on  Paramount Plus  in Australia, Latin America, the UK and South Korea, as well as on Pluto TV in Austria, France, Germany, Italy, Spain and Switzerland on the Pluto TV Sci-Fi channel. They also stream on  Paramount Plus  in Italy, France, Germany, Switzerland and Austria. In Canada, they air on Bell Media's CTV Sci-Fi Channel and stream on Crave.

Odd energy fluctuations…

Here is the brand new preview for “Face the Strange”…

On the way to the next clue, the U.S.S. Discovery is sabotaged by a mysterious weapon, leaving Captain Burnham, Rayner, and Stamets as the only crew members who can possibly save the ship in time.

Oh, for crying out loud… another sci-fi take on Groundhog’s Day. That is SUCH a cliche. It’s been done so many times.

That, and Discovery already did a time loop episode all the way back in its first season. Don’t recall the episode name, but I do recall it involved Lorca getting killed and then the ship would blow up.

I don’t know. I’m not entirely opposed to the idea, but… eh.

Yeah it’s the Harry Mudd episode from season 1 again although I will point out that’s my favorite episode in season 1 to this day.

So I’m a little excited about it but yeah it’s been done over again and again in sci fi (pun intended).

I do miss these types of stories in Star Trek but I understand why it’s different for others.

The Harry Mudd time loop episode was a good one. I think this one will be different though as it seems, in the preview, that they are going to random points in time.

Ah good point! I’m more excited about it now.

My favorite episode of the show to date, so ditto.

Wow cool. There are a few episodes I like more but can safely say it’s somewhere in my top 5.

Having watched it, it is not a time loop episode. At all. This reaction was premature.

The episode preview shows the original Discovery uniforms. Will this possibly have the tie-in to Calypso?

Looks like it will be an exciting episode.

Yes! I was just thinking the same thing. And the fact that they flash to San Francisco. I have a feeling that Discovery is going to reset its own timeline, which is why they’re being so hush hush with Starfleet Academy, and why it will take place on Earth.

Wondering if this episode somehow explains the events of Calypso — they need to abandon the ship for some reason in a possible future. (wouldn’t explain the registration change to 1031-A) but might be that Calypso takes place in a POSSIBLE Disco future.

Calypso was one of Zora’s dreams.

Oooo…. I like that!

“Face the Strange New Worlds.”

Let’s do an odd crossover, hah.

Looks interesting, which I don’t often say about Discovery.

This one looks good and the advance review I read suggests it’s the best of the season so far.

Yes I read the same! Really looking forward to it.

Lets do the time loop again? It’s just a mycelium jump to the left!

I watched it early this morning. Spoiler Free!! A great bottle show. They build on their OWN canon and we get a neat surprise (character-wise) Raynham and Burnham have some character development. My fav so far, this season.

Worked late so I could watch when it came on. Very strong and entertaining!

LOL at “Raynham.”

Someday, I hope SMG comes to learn that whispering is not always a valid acting choice.

You understand that actors follow the instructions of the script and director right? Because that is where the instruction to whisper usually comes from.

Did your complaint have any basis beyond criticizing an actor you dislike for doing her job? That makes as much sense as the people who blamed Jessica Alba for being nude in both Fantastic Four films. When that was in the script at the insistence of the director and is cited by Alba as one of the main reasons she quit acting.

Oh and don’t tell me no one ever said that about Alba. I saw it first hand right here in Trekmovie comment sections. The “discussion” involved a poster called Rose Pinenut.
