Gardai have launched a full murder investigation into the deaths of three siblings who were allegedly stabbed to death at a home in Dublin on Sunday.

The shocking incident was witnessed by a horrified crowd as Gardai arrived at the Tallaght housing estate in the early hours of Sunday morning.

Eighteen-year-old Lisa Cash is believed to have been babysitting her younger siblings when a 25-year-old man, believed to be known to the family, attacked the teen and children.

The suspect allegedly stabbed Lisa and eight-year-old twins Christy and Chelsea Cawley to death. Another sibling, a 14-year-old boy, escaped the house by jumping from a window and raised the alarm with neighbours.

Gardai from Tallaght Garda Station, armed detectives and members of the Armed Support Unit attended the scene, arriving around 12.30 am.

Sources say that a man refused to reason with Gardai who ordered him to drop a large kitchen knife he was allegedly holding, reports the Irish Mirror .

Witnesses claimed that the man, who is known to all three victims, was brandishing the weapon inside the home.

The suspected perpetrator is alleged to have stabbed all three victims and thrown the twins out of the top window of the house during a heated confrontation with armed gardai who were trying to reason with him from outside.

It is understood that the attacker threw the twins out of the upstairs window after they had already suffered fatal stab injuries.

The twin’s 18-year-old sister Lisa was discovered lying at the bottom of the stairs with apparent stab wounds. Gardai are now investigating whether she was thrown or pushed down the stairs during the attack.

A man who witnessed one of the children being thrown from the window told the Irish Mirror : “Everybody is shocked. I ran out and I saw the child being dangled from the window and I was shouting along with the gardai and other neighbours, ‘Please don’t do that’.

“And next of all he dropped the child... they had the spotlight up on the house and lasers pointing at him but they couldn’t shoot him because he would have dropped the child anyway. I was in bed actually when I first heard the screams."

Gardai fired non-lethal rounds at a man, entered the home and then discovered a man in the attic. Shocked witnesses say they saw gardai "drag" a man from the home.

The siblings were rushed to hospital but it is understood the teen and the young twins had died before gardai got access to them. The 14-year-old who jumped from the home was hospitalised with non-life threatening leg injuries. The mother, known as 'Twink,' who arrived at the scene, was also brought to hospital.

Last night, the suspect remained in custody at Tallaght Garda Station. Gardai are now set to launch a full murder investigation into the triple-killings.

Flowers left at the scene of the incident

"A very difficult morning"

The deaths have sent shockwaves through the country as the local community are left "reeling" following the tragedy.

Lisa has been described as a 'quiet girl who you could trust' and a 'lovely big sister.'

Speaking on RTE Morning Ireland on Monday, the principal of St Aidan's Community School, Kevin Shortall, paid tribute to Lisa Cash.

"She was a quiet, beautiful young girl, very diligent, hard-working. Got on with her work. Was a great support to her friends in times of trouble, I heard that from a number of people yesterday," he said.

"She is remembered as one of the most honest, genuine young people, full of integrity and no fuss, no drama around her. Got about her business and was hugely, highly regarded and very warmly remembered by so many staff members here in the school.

Lisa Cash

"I couldn't get over the things that people were saying about her. Just a lovely, lovely person, hugely highly regarded and will be terribly, badly missed. And a lovely big sister to her brothers and sisters as well."

He said that people were "in shock", and that the close-knit community would "reach out and mind each other" at this difficult time.

"We are all just meeting each other and shaking our heads and giving each other hugs and things like that. It's a very difficult morning."

After Morning Ireland, Ryan Tubridy struggled through his radio show and had to go off air after being overcome with emotion while speaking about the tragedy. He admitted it was a story he was finding difficult to come to terms with.

Ryan also had principal Kevin Shortall on-air. Ryan said after hearing the teacher speak on Morning Ireland he had "lost the professionalism" and said the story "has swallowed me up”. He continued, “it's gotten under the skin of the nation and is so hard to fathom."

The broadcaster said he couldn't bring himself to look at photographs of the children.

Neighbours have told of how they had to tell their children that "their two friends that they play with every day had gone to heaven."

Tallaght children deaths

One woman said, “This is like something you’d hear about happening in America – not here. They were such lovely kids. Christy was a lovely little fella, he was a little boy’s boy.

“He loved Man United and his twin Chelsea had a little cheeky face and she’d stick out her tongue.

“I’m not sure if it was a paramedic or a guard but I saw somebody pick up one of the kids who was covered in blood and rush them over to the ambulance. Everybody around here knows each other.”

Another man, whose grandchildren knew the twins, said: "It’s devastating for the whole community.

“Them kids played with my grandkids. I was only talking to them the other day. To see a child being thrown from the window is … those kids are dead.

“The family were lovely. The kids were only playing out on the road on Saturday evening. They were lovely, beautiful kids.

“It was so difficult being so close to it yet we couldn’t do anything about it and to find out this morning that they had passed away. It’s so horrible and tragic."

Shocking footage from the scene shared on social media

Gardai and local councillors have urged others not to share video footage from the scene after reports that clips from the horrific incident have been spread across WhatsApp.

Dermot Richardson, Sinn Fein councillor for the Tallaght area said: "There are videos being shared on WhatsApp. I would ask people not to share it out of respect for the family and the local community as well," he added.

"If you have footage, please pass on to the gardai."

Shocking footage of some of the incident shared on social media yesterday showed gardai at the scene, with screaming, shouting and breaking glass heard throughout.

At one stage in the video someone can be heard shouting “Don’t do it. Don’t f*cking do it.”

In another video of the incident someone can be heard shouting to a man in the window to “show us your f*cking hands.”

Gardai described it as a “violent, challenging and traumatic incident” but have not yet provided further details about what happened.

The Garda Armed Support Unit used non-lethal devices to arrest a man in his early 20s at the scene.

He is currently detained at Tallaght Garda Station under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.

The mother of the children, who was not injured at the scene, was also taken to CHI and is currently receiving medical treatment.

Gardai said everyone involved is believed to be known to each other and officers are not looking for anyone else in connection to the incident.

The scene at the Rossfield Estate remains sealed off and a forensic examination will take place on Sunday by the Garda Technical Bureau.

It’s believed the teenager was 18-years-old and the twins were eight.

The Coroner’s Office and the Office of the State Pathologist have been informed and post-mortem examinations are due to take place. A family liaison officer has been appointed and will continue to support those involved, Gardai added.

Locals described how they were woken up by the wailing of police sirens and a helicopter in the early hours of the morning.

“I was awake all night listening to the sirens and chopper. God love them all,” one woman said.

Another nearby resident wrote on Facebook: “Terribly sad. I could hear helicopter and police sirens last night.”

South Dublin County Council councillor Charlie O'Connor described the incident as a "really sad event". "Over here in Rossfield you can get that sense...that people are genuinely shocked," he told Sky News.

"We expected this incident to have an effect on the community not only here in Brookfield, but in the wider Tallaght area."

There is a large police presence in the area while a full forensic examination of the scene is under way.

The upstairs windows of the property were open and smashed while blood stains could be seen on the window frames.

A smashed downstairs window also remained open while forensic officers examined the front garden.

A black car outside the property was also a focal point of the investigation.

Forensic officers removed a number of items from the scene, including a shoe, small bag and black coat which were placed in forensic bags.

Flowers have also been left at the scene. One floral tribute said: "Fly high little angels. Our hearts are broken for you all."

The streets surrounding the property remained busy with children playing nearby.

Helen McEntee, Ireland's justice minister, said: "The killing of three young family members is a tragedy, so awful and heart-breaking. It is difficult to comprehend.

"My thoughts are with the family and the local community as they deal with this unimaginable crime.

"Gardai and other services are supporting them at this difficult time."

Dermot Richardson, Sinn Fein councillor for the Tallaght area, called for welfare support to be put in place for the family, local community and schoolchildren.

He also called for people to stop sharing video footage of the incident on WhatsApp and social media sites.

"There are videos being shared on WhatsApp. I would ask people not to share it out of respect for the family and the local community as well," he added.

"If you have footage, please pass on to the Gardai."

This article was updated at 3.57pm on Sunday, 4 September. The previous version said that the twins killed in the incident were both girls. They were a boy and a girl.

Ryan Tubridy's tears for young lives lost

Ryan Tubridy got emotional on air and told the country it is “OK to cry” amid the outpouring of grief for the loss of four young lives over the weekend.

Teenage jockey Jack de Bromhead, 13, died in a tragic horse racing accident in Kerry on Saturday, while Lisa Cash, 18, and her eight-year-old twin siblings Christy and Chelsea Cawley were killed in Dublin on Sunday.

Dad-of-two Ryan admitted to be shaken by the deaths and struggled through some of his radio show yesterday. He went off-air for a commercial break when his emotions threatened to overcome him and revealed he would have loved to have met the children.

Big-hearted Ryan, who also hosts RTE’s Late Late Toy Show Christmas special, told his listeners: “Everyone is feeling some sadness. We send our condolences to both families and remember Lisa, Chelsea, Christy and Jack.

“They should be going to school and laughing in the yard with their friends. Frankly, they should be here. May they rest in peace.”

Tubs then played music but became upset as he tried to continue and told listeners: “We’re going to have a song, I’m afraid. Sorry about this.”

He then took a commercial break and said on his return: “You would think I would be a bit more able for it all.

“It’s probably worth saying aloud that it is OK to cry.”

Andy Cash (24) appeared before a special sitting of Dublin’s Central Criminal Court on Monday night - charged with murdering his twin siblings Chelsea and Christy Cawley (8) and older sister Lisa Cash (18).

Mr Cash, of Rossfield Avenue, Tallaght, is accused of three counts of murder at an address in Rossfield Avenue on Sunday, September 4.

Appearing before Judge Patricia McNamara, Mr Cash, dressed in a grey top and tracksuit bottoms, remained silent during the hearing.

The accused stood briefly to acknowledge his presence in court when asked by the judge.

Giving evidence of arrest, charge and caution, Garda Robert Whitty of Tallaght Garda Station said the accused was charged at 19.43pm.

The court heard Andy Cash said “no comment” when each of the charges were put to him.

A solicitor for Mr Cash asked that his client be given legal aid.

He also stated that he would be seeking a psychological assessment for his client.

Mr Cash’s solicitor also stated that he was seeking his client be placed into “solitary confinement” while on remand in prison.

The judge stated that this would be a matter for the governor and said she would note that he was seeking a psychological assessment.

The defendant was remanded in custody, as a bail application for a murder charge can only be granted by the High Court.

He will appear before Cloverhill district court next Friday.

Devastated mum's pain at vigil for tragic kids

The devastated mother of three children killed in their own home was comforted at the scene as hundreds gathered for a vigil tonight.

Heartbroken mother Margaret “Twink” Cash McDonagh was seen leaning on mourners and in floods of tears as she was led away following a vigil of a massive crowd of neighbours, friends and mourners on Rossfield Avenue in Tallaght, south Co Dublin this evening.

The family stood in front of a huge poster featuring pictures of the slain children and a large display of flowers, cards and well wishes that were left outside the scene of the crime which shocked the country.

And shortly before half five, pink and blue balloons were released into the air as music played and the crowd stood silent - remembering tragic twins Christy and Chelsea Cawley, eight, and their sister Lisa Cash, 18.

The children’s mother was seen crying and being supported by mourners during the emotional vigil.

Earlier in the day dozens of school children had arrived at the scene to place flowers as they paid their respects to the slain children.

Tributes poured out throughout Monday as gardai continued to question a suspect over the killing of all three children.

As the suspect continued to be questioned, locals gathered in the streets, the church and in the schools the children attended.

And speaking to The Star outside the local St Aidan’s Church, parish priest Fr Bill O’Shaughnessy said he had opened the church for the day, to allow the community to grieve and cope with the loss.

“I celebrated mass here about half 10 and only then the news started filtering through about what had happened.

“People started reacting in terms of the shock and dismay at such a violent and horrendous act that’s taken place here in such a small and tight knit community.

“Mass was quiet yesterday because of the shock people had.

“There’s no adequate amount of words that’s going to put peoples hearts and minds at rest at the moment.

“We opened up the church here this morning and have it open all day for the community to come in and say a prayer or light a candle,” he said.

The local priest said the community was reeling from the loss - and he described what happened to the children as “evil.”

“A lot of parents came in here before school this morning and lit a candle.

“We are offering a bit of healing. On top of that it’s about offering a listening ear and indeed a shoulder to cry on.

“An act like this is unnatural. It really is unnatural and it’s an evil act and that will have its lasting effects on peoples hearts and minds for a time to come,” he told us.

Meanwhile at St Aidan’s Community School, where tragic Lisa attended and did her Leaving Certificate, students were united in grief.

Speaking to us, school Principal Kevin Shorthall described how students and staff were trying to come to terms with Lisa’s loss.

“The school is very calm this morning. It’s quiet, there’s a little bit of I suppose numbness and shock.

“We were on the intercom a lot and speaking to people and telling people to just go with that calmness.

“We are just trying to keep things calm in the school today, and let’s just try and do as much of the normal stuff as we can,” he said.

Mr Shorthall said support was being given to grieving students, as he said there are many who knew Lisa who didn’t attend class yesterday.

“I suppose you’ve two sides to it, you’ve the people who are directly connected and they’re not here and they probably won’t be here for a while and then you have people who have less of a connection who walked past the house or witnessed something or whatever it might be.

“We’ve got a responsibility for them as well,” he said.

“So we’re going to face this and keep every thing else in mind as well.”

Paying tribute to Lisa, Mr Shorthall told how she completed her Leaving Certificate at the school last year.

“Lisa was a student here. She left in 2021, did her Leaving Cert in difficult circumstances.

“She was obviously doing her leaving through covid.

“I do know her and I know the family but I suppose I’ve been getting messages from all our staff on just telling me stories about her, how good of a student she was, how sincere she was, how calm she was, how quietly diligent she was and a lovely, lovely girl,” he said.

“She was very popular. A great big sister, a lovely person”.

And he told how even though her class have graduated, a space was being made at the school for any of them to come and talk and grieve together.

“Her year are gone but we are going to have a space here for people from her year to come back if they need to and just come and talk to us.

“The way we are going to deal with this is just see what we encounter. We do have a plan and we have things in place but you can’t be so rigid.

“We support each other and we’ll keep talking,” he said.

Meanwhile authorities in the local St Aidan’s Senior National School, where the tragic eight year old twins were due to start third class this week, asked for privacy as they try to deal with the tragedy.

It comes as Garda Commissioner Drew Harris also spoke, saying support will be given to officers who attended the harrowing scene.

“It’s one of the worst incidents that I’ve heard of or come across in my service.

“We have put in place appropriate support for them, but we’d also acknowledge very much the trauma visited on the local community in terms of the shock of this incident and the subsequent grief.

“And that can’t be underestimated either,” he said.

Describing it as “sincerely the most dreadful incident”, he renewed an appeal for information.

“We are obviously now engaged in an investigation, and so it’s limited what I can say in respect of that.

“I would appeal to anyone who was in the area of Rossfield Avenue in the early hours of Sunday morning - 12.30am.

“If they haven’t spoken to Garda already, they should contact my colleagues in Tallaght”.

Ryan Tubridy breaks down on RTE show

RTE’s Ryan Tubridy was left emotional on his radio show this morning when speaking about the tragic deaths of Chelsea and Christy Cawley and Lisa Cash when he suddenly had to go off-air.

The presenter opened the show with a poignant message dedicated to the siblings and admitted he found it hard to look at their photos.

After some music, Tubridy tried to return to the show but was overcome with emotion. He was forced to go off-air following a pause.

'There are just no words at the moment'

Simon Harris has said that the violent deaths of three siblings in Dublin at the weekend has shocked the whole country.

The Minister for Higher Education said the nation has been numbed by the tragic deaths.

“There just are no words at the moment,” Mr Harris said on Monday. “What we’re all reading the newspapers and hearing on television and on radio programmes is just beyond a horrifically tragic and devastating scenario.

“Three young beautiful lives to be extinguished overnight through what seems to have been the most violent and heinous of crimes is something that I know has not just shocked the community of Tallaght. We think particularly of that community, but I think it’s something that has shocked the entire country.

“Obviously, there’s an ongoing criminal investigation, it’s important we don’t cut across that.

“This is just something that has numbed the nation. Our hearts and thoughts and our prayers go to the family, to their poor mum and the 14-year-old boy, to all their neighbours, all their friends, to the school children going back to school today, where there’ll be two empty desks where beautiful twins only returned to school in recent days. Our thoughts go out to absolutely everybody in the community. I think the whole nation holds all of them in our thoughts.”

'Lovely big sister' killed in Tallaght tragedy remembered as 'quiet, beautiful girl full of integrity'

A school principal has said that the community is in shock after the deaths of three siblings in a violent incident in Dublin at the weekend, as he paid tribute to the eldest victim.

The three victims have been named as Lisa Cash, 18, and her eight-year-old twin siblings Christy and Chelsea Cawley.

"I couldn't get over the things that people were saying about her. Just a lovely, lovely person, hugely highly regarded and will be terribly, badly missed. And a lovely big sister to her brothers and sisters as well.

"I believe she was babysitting at the time, and that would have been something that she was just so good at. She was the kind of person you could trust. That's the person Lisa was."

He said that people were "in shock", and that the close-knit Brookfield community would "reach out and mind each other" at this difficult time.

"We are all just meeting each other and shaking our heads and giving each other hugs and things like that. It's a very difficult morning."

Mr Cash appeared on Friday morning before Judge Cephas Power at Cloverhill District Court via video link from the Midlands Prison.

He did not comment when asked to confirm his name. Judge Power noted a Garda application to further remand the accused.

Counsel for the defence indicated there was consent.

Judge Power held the defendant in continuing custody to appear again on October 6th, for directions from the Director of Public Prosecutions.

During the previous hearing, Garda Rob Whitty gave evidence of arrest, charge and caution. He said he charged the accused with three counts of murder.

“His reply to the charge after caution was ‘no comment’ to each charge, and he was handed a true copy of each charge sheet,” Garda Whitty said.

The District Court cannot grant bail in a murder case which requires a High Court application.

Tallaght: Girl shot dead 'in family feud'

A teenage girl killed in a drive-by shooting may have been mistakenly targeted in a feud between families, detectives believe.

Tallaght: Girl shot dead 'in family feud'

The 16-year-old, named locally as Melanie McCarthy, but also known by the surname McNamara, was shot in Tallaght, Dublin, last night at around 10.35pm.

She was sitting in a silver-coloured Nissan Almera car in Brookview Way with three others when her killer opened fire from a black Hyundai Santa Fe SUV that pulled up alongside.

One line of inquiry is that the shooting was linked to a falling out between traveller families.

“It is believed she may not have been the intended target,” said a garda source.

At least one shot was fired from the Hyundai into the car, shattering the side window and hitting the teenager in the head.

She was two weeks from her 17th birthday.

The driver of the Nissan rushed her to Tallaght Hospital where, despite intensive efforts to save her, she was pronounced dead around 1am.

Her body was removed to the mortuary for a post-mortem examination by the state pathologist.

The teenage girl lived with her family in the Drumcairn Avenue area of Tallaght. They were formerly from Newcastle West in Co Limerick.

The Hyundai, which fled the estate at speed, was later found abandoned in the CityWest area, near Brown’s Barn restaurant.

It was not burned out and detectives are to carry out forensic tests on the vehicle.

That scene and the scene of the shooting have been sealed off for tests by garda technical experts.

Calls for calm as innocent woman shot and house set on fire in bitter Tallaght gangland dispute

The feud has seen the grave of a child, who is related to the female victim, desecrated in a criminal damage incident earlier this year

There are calls for calm after an innocent woman was shot and a house was set on fire amid a bitter gangland dispute.

The woman was blasted in the hip and leg area with a suspected pellet gun on Tuesday night in Tallaght . She is understood to have presented herself to Tallaght Hospital on Tuesday night but discharged herself yesterday morning.

A house was also set alight in an apparent firebomb attack in the nearby Bawnlea area of Jobstown on Tuesday night. A car was also discovered burnt out nearby and there are now major fears of further retaliation to attacks in a growing gang dispute.

It is understood that nobody who was targeted in any of these latest incidents has any involvement in the feud. Sources say the woman’s shooting occurred amidst an ongoing gangland feud between two rival drug gangs in the area that has seen a spate of violent incidents this year.

Independent councillor Dermot Richardson called for peace and said the community is living in fear. He said: “People are fearful of what’s happening in the area. I think they’re just scared. There are many innocent people living in and around this area and I just ask for calm in the area.

“If there’s anything we can do to stop this feud going on that’s what we’re here for. Contact any one of the Tallaght councillors and we would be willing to help try and sort things out.”

The feud has seen the grave of a child, who is related to the female victim, desecrated in a criminal damage incident earlier this year. The feud is believed to have arisen amid a dispute over drugs and a subsequent turf war has ensued.

In a statement yesterday morning gardai said: “Gardai and emergency services attended the scene of a number of incidents in Tallaght yesterday evening, Tuesday 21 November 2023. At approximately 10.10pm, gardai received reports of the discharge of a firearm at a residential premises in the Jobstown area.

“A woman, aged in her 30s, presented to Tallaght Hospital with a suspected gunshot injury. Her injuries are believed to be non-life threatening. Later in the evening gardai and emergency services attended incidents of criminal damage by fire of a car and of a house at separate locations in the Jobstown area. No arrests have been made at this time."

Israel weighs response after Iran fires missile barrage

Kathleen Magramo, CNN

More global leaders urge restraint after Iran's attack on Israel. Here are the latest reactions

From CNN’s Negar Mahmoodi, Eyad Kourdi, Kathleen Magramo and Teele Rebane

Reactions to Iran's strikes on Israel have poured in from world leaders, some openly condemning Tehran, others calling for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and almost all urging restraint during a moment of huge tension in the Middle East.

Here are the latest responses:

Oman has expressed "profound concern" over the escalation in military activities between Iran and Israel, emphasizing the grave implications of these tensions.

"The Ministry emphasizes the position of the Sultanate of Oman, which calls for adherence to international laws and the necessity for the Security Council to assume its responsibility towards maintaining international peace and security," the Foreign Affairs Ministry said on Sunday.

The Philippines expressed "serious concern over the increasing tensions between Israel and Iran."

"We urge all parties to refrain from escalating the situation and to work towards a peaceful resolution of their conflict," the Philippines Department of Foreign Affairs said Sunday.

New Zealand Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and Foreign Minister Winston Peters condemned Iran's "shocking and illegal strikes against Israel" on Sunday.

"We are deeply concerned that miscalculation on any side could prove disastrous," Luxon said, urging all parties to de-escalate.  "These unprecedented strikes on Israel only add to an already unstable global environment," Peters said.

Malaysia and Indonesia have issued separate statements calling for restraint after Iran's retaliatory strikes on Israel.

Both Southeast Asian countries, where Islam is the predominant religion, reiterated support for Palestinian rights and causes. Malaysia and Indonesia do not recognize Israel.

How Iran's attack on Israel is impacting financial markets

From CNN's Laura He

An anti-missile system operates as seen from Ashkelon, Israel, on Saturday.

Gold prices rose while Asian stocks mostly fell on Monday, as rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East spurred demand for safe-haven   investments after Iran  launched an unprecedented attack  on Israel over the weekend.

Oil prices had settled higher on Friday in anticipation of retaliatory action from Iran, hitting their highest levels since October.

They retreated slightly during Asian trading hours on Monday, as traders curtailed the geopolitical risk premium after the attack caused only minor damage, according to Israeli military officials.

“Heightened tensions in the Middle East amid a worsening geopolitical backdrop kept commodity markets on edge,” analysts from ANZ said in a research report on Monday.

Iran’s attack is likely to raise concerns of a possible disruption to oil supply, they said. “The extent of that risk will likely be determined by the reaction of Israel’s government.”

Before Iran’s attack, US stocks  ended Friday sharply lower , as Wall Street worried about escalating tension in the Middle East.

US futures are cautiously higher after US President Joe Biden and his national security team, seeking to contain the risk of a wider regional war,  told their counterparts  the US will not participate in any counter-strike against Iran.

Flight operations resume at Iranian airports

From CNN’s Adam Pourahmadi, Negar Mahmoodi, and Eyad Kourdi

Airports in the Iranian capital of Tehran have resumed flights at 6:00 a.m. local time on Monday, according to Iran's state-aligned Tasnim news agency.

On Sunday both of Tehran's airports, Imam Khomeini Airport and Mehrabad Airport, suspended flights after Iran's attack on Israel stoked regional tensions.

Travel disrupted: On Saturday, at least three United Airlines flights headed to or departing from the Middle East were canceled as the conflict unfolded.

Dutch carrier KLM has said it would stop flying over Iran and Israel "as a precaution" but continue to fly to and from Tel Aviv.

Austrian Airlines and Lufthansa — currently the only two Western carriers that operate international flights to Iran — have announced a suspension of flights to and from Tehran through April 18.

Malaysia and Indonesia urge restraint to prevent escalation in the Middle East

"Malaysia strongly urges all parties in the Middle East region to refrain and exercise great caution and not to escalate the already tense situation," its Ministry of Foreign Affairs said Sunday.

“Any further form of provocation and/or retain could ignite a devastating region-wide conflict that will not serve the region nor the Palestinian cause,” the statement read, reiterating the objective of ensuring “freedom of the Palestinians and their rights to their lands.”  “Any distraction from this objective is what Israel wants, which is to deflect the global community’s attention away from their nefarious inhumane and unconscionable acts in Palestine,” it said.

Indonesia's Ministry of Foreign Affairs also called on "all parties to exercise restraint" after Iran's retaliatory strikes on Israel and said that they were "deeply concerned over the escalation of the situation in the Middle East."

"Indonesia urges the UN Security Council to act immediately to de-escalate tensions and continue working towards lasting peace in the Middle East, including by ending the illegal occupation of Palestine and various violations of international law by Israel."

India calls on Iran to release 17 Indian crew members on board seized container ship

From CNN's Sandi Sidhu in Hong Kong

India has called on Iran to release 17 Indian crew members on board a container ship seized by Iran on Saturday.

Indian External Affairs Minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar said that he spoke to his Iranian counterpart Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amir Abdollahian and "took up the release of 17 Indian crew members of MSC Aries."

Four Filipino seamen were also on board the ship, according to the Philippine Department of Migrant Workers.

The department said it was working with its government, the ship owner, and the operator to release the captured seafarers.

On Saturday, Iran’s Revolutionary Guards seized an Israeli-linked container ship in a helicopter operation near the Strait of Hormuz, state news agency IRNA reported.

Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) said there were 25 crew members on board.

It's morning in the Middle East. Here's what you need to know

People walk down a street in Tel Aviv on Saturday.

An hours-long Israeli war cabinet meeting ended Sunday  without a decision  on how Israel will respond to  Iran’s unprecedented missile and drone attack , an Israeli official said.

The cabinet is determined to take action — but has yet to decide on the timing and scope, the official said.

CNN analyst Barak Ravid said Israeli ministers Benny Gantz and Gadi Eisenkot advocated for swift action, but  US President Joe Biden's phone call with Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu   led to a decision to delay the response.

Israel is not seeking war after Iran's attack and "balance is needed in this situation," Israeli President Isaac Herzog told CNN's Wolf Blitzer on Sunday.

Biden and senior members of his national security team told their counterparts the US will not participate in any offensive action against Iran, according to US officials familiar with the matter.

Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said any “new aggression against the interests of the Iranian nation will be met with a heavier and regrettable response,” according to state media.

Here are some other key developments:

  • UN response:  United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres  said the UN and member countries have a “shared responsibility” to engage “all parties concerned to prevent further escalation.” In Sunday’s UN Security Council emergency session called to address Iran’s attack, Israel and Iran condemned each other’s actions .
  • Diplomatic response:  Jordan summoned Iran's ambassador after it intercepted Iranian drones over the country. G7 nations condemned the attack and said they would work together to "stabilize the situation" in the Middle East. And US Secretary of State Antony Blinken emphasized the importance of avoiding escalation in the region and "a coordinated diplomatic response," in calls with his counterparts from the UK, Germany , Turkey, Egypt, Jordan and Saudi Arabia .

And here's the latest on the war in Gaza:

  • Child shot in the head: As thousands of Palestinians were turned away from returning to their homes in northern Gaza,  a young girl was shot in the head  by Israeli soldiers, her mother said. Video showed a man carrying Sally Abu Laila, 5, who was bleeding from her head, with people crowding around her in panic trying to cover her wound.
  • IDF calls in reserves: The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) said Sunday it was calling in about two reserve brigades for Gaza "operational activities" after a situational assessment. The move was to defend Israel and civilian security, the IDF said.
  • Bakery reopens: A World Food Programme (WFP) bakery has reopened in northern Gaza, where the UN agency says bakeries have been unable to operate for months due to the war and lack of access. "We need safe & sustained access to prevent famine," WFP  said .
  • Ceasefire deal: Hamas has turned down an offer on a ceasefire and hostage deal, IDF spokesperson Rear Adm. Daniel Hagari said. A diplomatic source familiar with the negotiations told CNN the militant group rejected the proposal at talks in Cairo.

Israeli and Iranian ambassadors trade accusations during UN Security Council session

From Abel Alvarado in Atlanta

Israel and Iran’s United Nations ambassadors condemned each other’s actions during Sunday’s UN Security Council emergency session called to address Iran’s attack on Israel.

Israel’s UN ambassador Gilad Erdan said Iran "must be stopped before it drives the world to a point of no return, to a regional war that can escalate to a world war."

Erdan accused Iran of seeking world domination and that its attack proved that Tehran "cares nothing, nothing for Islam or Muslims" before pulling out a tablet to show a video of Israel intercepting Iranian drones above Jerusalem’s Al-Aqsa Mosque.

Erdan called on the Security Council to designate the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terror organization.

“Action must be taken now, not for Israel's sake, not for the region's sake, but for the world's sake. Stop Iran today."

Iran’s UN Ambassador Amir Saeid Iravani said his country’s operation was "entirely in the exercise of Iran’s inherent right to self-defense, as outlined in Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations and recognized by international law."

Iravani said:

“Iran is never seeking to contribute to the spillover of the conflict in the region, nor does it to escalate or spread the tension to the entire region," he said.

Tehran’s attack had been anticipated since  a suspected Israeli strike  on an Iranian diplomatic complex in Syria earlier this month.

Iravani added Iran has “no intention of engaging in conflict with the US in the region” but warned Iran will use its “inherent right to respond proportionately” should the US initiate a military operation against “Iran, its citizens or its security.”

"No significant damage within Israel," senior US military official says

From CNN's MJ Lee, Kevin Liptak and Priscilla Alvarez

A senior US military official said the United States assessed there was "no significant damage within Israel itself" after Iran's missile and drone barrage.

Israeli military spokesperson Daniel Hagari appeared to echo the assessment on Sunday, saying that out of hundreds of rockets launched from Iran, only a few penetrated Israel, causing minor damage to the infrastructure at Nevatim airbase near the runway and to a road in the Hermon region.

Nevatim remained fully functional, and planes continued take-off and landing to fulfil their missions.

US President Joe Biden told the Israeli prime minister in his phone call Sunday that he should consider Saturday a win because Iran’s attacks had been largely unsuccessful and demonstrated Israel’s superior military capability, a senior administration official said.

John Kirby, the White House national security spokesman, said Sunday the ability to prevent widespread damage was a demonstration of Israel’s “military superiority” and proof that Iran was not the “military power that they claim to be.”

“This was an incredible success, really proving Israel’s military superiority and just as critically, their diplomatic superiority, that they have friends in the region, that they have around the world that are willing to help them,” Kirby told CNN’s Jake Tapper on “State of the Union.”

Israel's war cabinet meeting ends without a decision on Iran attack response, an official says

From CNN's Jeremy Diamond

An hours-long Israeli war cabinet meeting ended Sunday night without a decision on how Israel will respond to Iran’s attack, an Israeli official said.

The cabinet is determined to respond – but has yet to decide on the timing and scope.

The official said the Israeli military has been tasked with coming up with additional options for a response.

Separately, a senior Biden administration official told reporters that an Israeli official told the United States that it's not looking to significantly escalate the showdown with Iran.

“I think Israel made clear to us they're not looking for a significant escalation with Iran. That's not what they're looking for. They're looking to protect themselves and defend themselves,” the senior administration official said.

Israel war cabinet minister Benny Gantz said earlier Sunday that Israel will “exact a price from Iran in a way and time that suits us.”
