Stages of the route

Our guide service will come to pick you up from the hotel, airport or train station of your choice. The main goal of this stage is to bring everyone together, all of those who are going to be part of the group and offer a tour orientation. During this session, we will be able to start get to know each other, as well as review every last detail of the tour with the guides. And as a final event, there will be a welcome dinner.

Ready, set... go! And so it begins with an adventure stage through the mountains. With everything you need in the cases on our BMWs, we start our motorcycle tour from Madrid and get moving north. This is where we’ll put our bikes to the test for the first time, the Guadarrama mountain range, natural boundary between the Region of Madrid and Castile and Leon. Having warmed up after the first few kilometers, we will make a stop in Segovia. There we will get to enjoy one of the most famous dishes in the local traditional cuisine, the cochinillo (suckling pig). And for dessert, as the grand finale, we’ll cross our guide’s favorite mountain pass and finish the stage in the Gredos mountain range.

A new day dawns. Nature lovers are in luck. After a full night’s sleep and an energizing breakfast, we get underway towards the Jerte Valley. Under our wheels is one of Spain’s natural havens. Newly asphalted roads and a unique landscape, populated by mostly cherry trees, this place asserts itself as a formidable location for motorcycling lovers. Behind every curve of the winding mountainside, lies Plasencia and its reservoir. The end of the stage will be in the city of Cáceres.

At day 4, we’ll leave behind Spain and this is where our Portugal’s Motorcycle Tour will take place. We will be riding our BMW bikes from Caceres to the river Tagus. Its riverbed will be our guide when the comes of crossing the geographical boundary that divides the Iberian peninsula in two, Portugal is before us. We’ll cross the country, east to west, following the course of the river until we get to the Tagus Estuary Natural Reserve, located at its mouth. Just a few kilometers later, we’ll reach the capital. The arrival in Lisbon crossing the Vasco da Gama bridge, more than 12 kilometers long, will be one of the magical moments of the tour.

Rest day or not. Those who wish may enjoy a special extra trip that our guides will plan for them. The area of Sintra, Cascais and Estoril is great for a joyride. However, if what you need is some rest, Lisbon offers a wide variety of possibilities from a day at the beach to leisurely riding the tram along its avenues.

Back on the bike. This time we’re headed north. The Peniche fortress will give us a perspective of Portugal’s shipping past, as well as a panoramic view of the Atlantic. Possibly one of the best locations for a once-in-a-lifetime photo! The inland roads in this part of the country, more fun for a motorcyclist than those on the coast, will take us to Coimbra. In this old medieval town, birthplace of the Portuguese culture, we will make camp for the night and the next day we’ll ride on to Porto.

A new day before us of rubber-burning fun. Eager to continue on the road, we’ll race down the road. We will climb from Coimbra to Aveiro. There’ll be a stop to eat. The beauty of its water channels, so similar to those of Venice, are a joy to behold. After enjoying the local cuisine and taking a picture in the old town, we’ll be back on our way. The final part of this stage will take us to Porto, second largest city in the country. Once the our motorcycles are parked, we’ll have a glass of Porto’s famous wine, named after the city.

Last kilometers in Portugal. This day we will ride through history. We’ll glide through the curves that make up the border that has divided the Iberian Peninsula in two for centuries. Lunch almost before the border, and then we’ll ride over the imaginary line that separates us from Spain. The end of the stage has a hidden surprise that only those who join the tour will discover.

Wake up to the mountains peering through your window. The fresh morning air and a hearty breakfast will wish you good morning. We’ll get on our way back to the capital. This stage is designed to take advantage of every drivable kilometer throughout the mountain range on our way to Madrid. We’ll follow a tour starting in Gredos that goes over the Guadarrama. The end of this amazing motorcycle tour is upon us, and we’ll have one last night to say our goodbyes

Time to say goodbye to the rest of the group after this great adventure. It is the time pack our suitcases, take our memories and say goodbye. See you next time!

Fantastic roads, scenery and excellent accommodation

Portugal and Spain has become an annual pilgrimage for us, and is a firm favourite with our customers, so we are always happy to return whenever possible.  This year we are spending more time in the north of Spain, known as ' Green Spain '  which encompasses the lovely regions of  Cantabria, Asturias and Galicia .

The tour uses the Brittany  Plymouth to Santander  ferry return which considerably reduces our travelling time. (see travel choice). On arrival we head westwards along the top of Spain before turning south to enter Portugal.  Our first stop in Portugal will be a 2 night stop in the the medieval city of Guimaraes.  Suitable relaxed we   pass through the Douro wine region to Viseu a historic city which gives us easy access to Portugal's highest  roads in the Serra da Estrela Mountains. This 3 night stop gives us the opportunity to enjoy the views and ride the fantastic mountain roads of the mountains. We enter back into Spain via the roads of the lovely Douro River valley, stopping just over the border, before completing our tour with a further  3 night stop in the Picos de Europa.

See previous tour pictures to Spain and Portugal in our  website gallery.

This is an  Escorted Tour  which   means that although the guide will be with you, you are responsible for doing your own navigation. We provide a Tour Pack which will include a full itinerary, suggested route directions, Gpx waypoints and hotel location. This system suits many people, as it allows them to ride at their own pace and style, either alone or in small groups. However, if you prefer, you may ride with the guide, who will act as your escort throughout the tour.

Accommodation Those of you who have travelled in Spain and Portugal before will no doubt be aware that the Pardaors and Pousadas offer some of the finest accommodation available. Many of these hotels are converted palaces, castles, convents or monasteries.  All hotel bedrooms are en-suite with the usual facilities, such as TV, telephone and hairdryer.  Many have Air-Conditioning, fridges, balconies, and Wi-Fi access. It would take too long to itemise the entire different hotels' facilities, however items such as fitness rooms, spa, sauna and swimming pools where available, are all included, so we suggest you take your swimming gear. All other hotels will be of 4 star quality, maintaining the standards you have come to expect from us.

Note 1.  In Spain and Portugal, it is the normal practice to eat quite late - evening meals will be traditional regional menus and mainly meat-based.  Although we will do our best to obtain an alternative, vegetarians should be aware that the choice can be very limited. We have purposely not included dinner some nights, as it gives you more time to explore and I know you like to enjoy the ambience of the local restaurants and bars.

Templars castle

The tour itinerary is based on Brittany Ferries Plymouth to Santander crossing. (See travel choice)

Wednesday 11th September : Today we board the Pont Aven, Brittany's flagship ferry from Plymouth to Santander.  (note:1545hrs departure).

Thursday 12th September (120 miles) : on arrival we follow the coastline through Cantabria to our first nights destination in Oviedo, the capital city of Asturias. The hotel facilities include a swimming pool and is located just a 10 minute walk from the historic centre.  4 star Hotel, Dinner, B&B

Friday 13th September (200 miles):   continuing southwards we pass through the Montes de Leon. There is the opportunity to visit the ' Templars Castle ' at Ponferrada. Built in the 12th century it was named after the Knights of the Templar who protected the pilgrims on their way to Santiago de Compostela. Entering Galicia we stay the night in a former  17th century Benedictine Monastery which enjoys unrivalled views across the countryside. 4 star Parador, Dinner B&B.

Saturday 14th September (150 miles): we start the day with a visit to the Canyon de Sil. Stretching some 35 kilometres and containing the river Sil its  vertical walls rise up over the water, reaching a height of almost five hundred metres at some points. These slopes guide the river round wide bends and meanders, offering some of Galicia’s most magical spots. Riding the roads of the  Serra da Peneda-Geres NP  we enter Portugal and end our day in the beautiful city of  Guimaraes . We leave you to dine out in one of the many restaurants. 4 star Pousada, B&B.

Sunday 15th September (free day):  Guimarães is known for its rich history including  a magnificent Gothic monastery, a heavily fortified castle and an elegant 15th-century palace. Between these monuments lies a maze of cobbled streets and charming plazas, lined with traditional houses and family-run shops. Should you wish to visit, both Braga and Porto are a short ride away. Again we dine in the city.  4 star Pousada, B&B.

Monday 16th September (150 miles):  Not a great mileage today, but we enjoy a scenic journey down to the  Douro River  before climbing towards Portugal’s highest mountain range  Serra da Estrela. Unlike previous years we will not be staying up the mountain but this time at the foot of it, in the ancient city of Viseu . We should arrive in plenty of time to explore before dining out in this lovely city. 4 star Pousada, B&B.

Tuesday 17th & Wed 18th September (free days): We have 3 nights 2 days to enjoy the city that is constantly voted as the best city to live in Portugal. Enjoy wandering the medieval streets, see the historic quarter and visit the iconic cathedral. Perhaps more importantly for us the city is ideally placed for riding the Serra da Estrela Mountains.  The combination of well surfaced, traffic free, twisting roads make this a bikers paradise and our customers constantly tell us they are the best they have ever ridden. To the southwest are the mountains of Serra do Caramulo and the Atlantic coastline is just 60 miles away.  Both nights we eat out in the city. 4 star Pousada, B&B.

Thursday 19th September (200 miles):  Some great roads today as we leave Videu and pick up the roads of the Douro River as they twist and turn towards Spain. Crossing the border we stop for the night at a Parador overlooking the towns medieval castle. 4 star Parador Dinner, B&B .

Friday 20th September (200 miles):  Today we take a cross country route past Leon and into the Picos de Europa National Park . Our hotel for the next 3 nights is new to us, but in the area we love. This 4 star hotel has  modern, soundproofed rooms, flat-screen satellite TV and garden views and is just a 5 minute walk from the town centre. Whilst here we dine out at one of the towns many restaurants. 4 star hotel, B&B.

Saturday 21st & Sun 22nd September (free days):  Our stay allows us time to explore the wonderful National Park of the Picos de Europa and is ideally placed for riding some fabulous roads through the valleys and mountain ranges of the Pico's. Our location is also ideal for visiting the beautiful Asturias coastline. 4 star hotel, B&B .

Monday 23rd September (90 miles):  Although only a short distance to Santander, the ferry is not due to sail until 1830 hrs so we have all day to further enjoy the area before making our way to Santander, where we catch the Brittany ferries flag ship, 'Cap Finistere'. With bike stowed, there is time to relax over a drink or two and reflect on the tour's events, before taking advantage of the on-board dining options. A 4 berth en-suite cabin (for two persons) is included in the package.

Tuesday 24th September:  We arrive back in Plymouth at 1530 hrs, from where we make our way home.

See pictures from previous Spain & Portugal Tours -  Gallery

Travel Choice  : The tour itinerary is based on a Plymouth to Santander return ferry. Although this saves time and mileage we understand that ferries are not for everyone, so there is the option to make your own arrangements and join and leave the group at the first and last night's hotel. Costs will be reduced accordingly.

Prices are based on two people sharing a 2/4 berth cabin, should you wish an alternative please advise us asap. These will be subject to availability and priced accordingly.

Personal Travel and Breakdown Assistance Cover

On all European tours (including Southern Ireland) we require clients to take-out some form of Personal Travel and Accident/Breakdown cover. This is essential for repatriation of yourself and your motorcycle in the event of an accident or medical emergency. If you have an existing policy you should check that your company would repatriate your bike, even if undamaged, should you be unable to ride it (many do not!)

We also strongly urge you to take out insurance prior to paying your balance that includes cancellation cover in the event of circumstances which may cause you to cancel. Ideally this should also include cover for all  Covid  related incidents, either before or during the tour.

TOUR INFORMATION

With detailed route maps and GPS coordinates guiding you every step of the way this could just be the self guided tour you have been looking for. The riding in the mountains can as always be challenging but if you are an experienced rider or a competent first timer this tour would be suitable.

In order to fit with the ferry schedule the tour itinerary below is based on departing Plymouth on a Sunday and arriving back in the UK on a Friday 13 days later. Other crossings are available but may mean spending two night onboard the ferry on the outbound crossing. If the Sunday crossing is not an option for you then please contact us for more details.

TOUR ITINERARY

This fabulous self-guided tour begins as you board the flagship of the Brittany ferries fleet, the Pont Aven. With several restaurants, bars and a cinema this is the perfect place to relax as you sail overnight across the Bay of Biscay to Spain.

Day 2: 85 Miles

Your early afternoon arrival in Santander allows you plenty of time to enjoy today’s route as you follow the Bay of Biscay towards the Picos Mountains which soon become visible in the distance. Before long you are right in the middle of the action as you ride the twisty Hermina Gorge on your way to your first hotel which is located in the heart of the Liébana valley. Featuring an outdoor swimming pool and fantastic restaurant this is an ideal place to start your tour.

Day 3: 225 miles

With a mixture of Mountain Passes, Autoroutes and rural roads your journey today winds through the scenic Cantabrian Mountains before moving onward to the Castilla Y Leon region and the Romanesque town of Segovia. This beautiful town is steeped in history and with the Roman aqueduct dominating the skyline and the fabulous gothic Cathedral it is a fascinating place to visit and explore.

Day 4: 315 miles

Your onward journey now heads across the Iberian Peninsula and the plains of Castilla La Mancha. Today is the longest day on the tour but due to the smooth, sweeping, traffic free roads you make good progress through the barren arid landscape. Your destination tonight is a fabulous four star hotel in the historic town of Cordoba. With underground parking and a roof top swimming pool the hotel is set on the banks of the Guadalquivir River and is just a short walk across the Roman bridge to the centre of town.

Day 5: 140 miles

With your longest day now just a memory you can make a leisurely start and continue through Andalusia toward the Mediterranean coast. As you travel further south the open roads give way to the splendour of the Sierras Subbéticas and Montes de Málaga national parks. Your hotel for the next two nights is located directly on the Mediterranean coast and is equipped with 4 restaurants, 2 swimming pools and a spa.

Day 6: (supplied ride-out 100 miles)

Today you can choose to take the supplied ride-out, take a trip to Gibraltar and ride the cable car to the top of the famous rock or you can just sit back and relax on the beach or by the hotel pool.

Day 7: 150 miles

The adventure continues as you now head north to our next overnight stay in the city of Seville. Seville is the capital of Andalusia and is situated on the banks of the Guadalquivir River which divides the city into two halves: Seville and Triana. Your four star hotel is set in the Triana district and is just a short walk across the river to the centre of Seville.

Day 8: 196 miles

As you leave Spain behind and enter Portugal the scenery now changes to soft rolling hills and open plains with cork and olive trees dominating the landscape. Tonight’s four star hotel is located by the historical centre of Evora which is reputed to be one of Portugal's finest towns. It is a true open-air museum with the Romans giving it its most famous landmark, the Temple of Diana. Dating from the 2nd century, the temple is one of the best preserved Roman monuments in Europe.

Day 9: 215 miles

As you continue your journey along Portugal’s famous traffic free roads the rolling countryside eventually gives way to the mountains as you enter the fabulous Serra da Estrela National Park. Your hotel for the next 2 nights is superbly located in the mountains and affords panoramic views over the Cova da Beira valley.

Day 10: (supplied ride-out 100 Miles)

The Estrela National park is located in central Portugal and is a place of surprising contrasts. From heavily forested mountains and valleys to lunar landscapes this is definitely an awesome place to ride your bike. Today’s supplied ride-out sees you riding through some of the lesser known back roads of the park which can include a visit to the Torre monument that marks the highest point of mainland Portugal

Day 11: 260 miles

Today’s carefully planned route winds its way to the Duoro valley and follows the river along the border which separates Portugal from Spain. Now back in Spain you ride through the Sierra de la Culebra hunting reserve which is located at the southern fringes of the Cantabrian Mountains. Your hotel for the evening is a traditional Spanish hotel dating back to the 19th-century. This former mansion house is located only yards from the historic town centre.

Day 12: 195 miles

The stunning scenery and great roads just keep coming as you now cross the province of León and head north back towards the Cantabrian Mountains and the Picos da Europa national park. Your day ends as you board the ferry in Santander for the overnight crossing back to the UK.

Arrive Plymouth.

We are now in our third year of touring with Freedom Motorcycle Tours and we honestly can not fault them. The pace is right, no one is pushed beyond their limits, the routes are great and the people they attract make it more worthwhile. Within hours everyone knows each other and friendships develop from an early stage to remain even outside of touring. Cant recommend Face and Dee enough and loads more touring to come!!

Gary and Kelly Cooper

I chose Freedom because of the reviews, plus a personal recommendation. My favourite aspect was mixing with a bunch of like minded riders, and knowing you are going to be shown some great roads. This is a great way to tour Europe if you prefer to have it all arranged for you.

Anthony Ford

"I've ridden through and around France for many years, but this was my first time in the Vercors Massif region as a base for daily rideouts and I'm so glad I booked it. A day and a half of riding got us into the foothills of the Alps and as soon as we reached the Vercors the big grin appeared and never left. This area of France has it all, a great mix of roads to test all abilities, fantastic mountain gorge views and safe viewing points for the all important photos. I enjoyed some of my best riding days on this trip and Freedom Motorcycle Tours certainly picked some of the best roads to ride on and made it an exciting & thoroughly enjoyable experience."

Charlie Spicer

Well what can I say that others haven't, first time on tour with a group from start to finish all instructions very clear and check in at EuroTunnel very easy, marker system explained well before hand and on the train and works very well. Then on to the best part the roads , views and people met on the tour was exceptional and I can't thank Face , the Freedom team and the rest of the group enough, for making it such a great experience they really know there stuff to get the most out of the tour with memorable for life. See you next year guys for another great tour.

Stephen Gregory

The Black Forest tour was my first organised motorcycle tour I had taken part in , the whole experience from start to finish was simply fantastic and memorable, Face and Dee are passionate about motorcycle touring and are the perfect tour hosts and guides, friendly, approachable and ready to share advice and knowledge at anytime during the tour , I was made most welcomed and was able to ride at my own pace without any pressure whatsoever, this is without doubt a 5 star recommendation from me and will definitely be touring with FMT again in the future , big thank you to Face and Dee for a wonderful experience

Paul Johnson

Freedom were very friendly and more accommodating. Just the dynamics of it was excellent. You just get out and ride. Dont need to worry about routes, bookings etc. You can actually enjoy riding stress free. Just outstanding and friendly.

Suresh Kopathalli

“My recent Vosges Mountains tour with FMT was not only my first group trip, but after many years of UK based riding also my first venture to mainland Europe by bike. Everything was really well organised, with clear communications and guidance from Face & Dee. The experience exceeded all my expectations and I thoroughly enjoyed the whole trip! I will definitely go with FMT again, and it’s a 5-star review from me!”

Ticked all the Boxes. Back from another great tour with Freedom Motorcycles, through the sweeping and winding roads of France, to the Millau Viaduct. Led by Michael (AKA Face) and supported by Dee back in the office or, as sometimes happens, from the rear of the group, FMT Tours are well organised and never fail to disappoint - I’ve been on a few and have more booked. Face always seems to find roads to challenge riders of all abilities with a suitable balance of great riding, scenery, fuel, lunch and coffee stops. Hotels are always to a good standard and in locations close to suitable eateries allowing the group banter to continue well into the evening. I will be back again soon

David McConnachie

I chose Freedom after doing some research online and checking out a few reviews and thought the package looked like the right type of holiday for me - and I was right! The riding was superb through beautiful scenery and the accommodation was excellent. Key factor which (for me) made it a success was the fact that it was well organised but with a laid back relaxed feel. Drop off marker system worked well and lets everyone ride at their own pace. Best recommendation is a re-booking - I have booked the Italian Lakes 2020.

Andrew Rowley

I have met and ridden with some of the nicest people that you could ever meet and trust whilst riding your bike. Any tour will only be as good as the people who run them, and Freedom Motorcycles Tours are truly awesome and amazing people.

Keith Walters

Hello all of you beautiful dolls. Thanks for a great weeks holiday and plenty of laughs. Sorry about the singing, I can't help myself lol. A special thanks to Face and of course Dee for our great trip. Last but not list I'm now at home safe and sound. Two ring's as my mum would say. Hope to see you all again somewhere over rainbow. There's a song there somewhere I think. I will learn the words for next year. Cheers Kevin. 😁 😁 😁

Kevin Hurrell

Why he chooses Freedom, They’re a great company, cover all aspects of customer requirements. Excellent hosts and basically a great laugh. Couldn’t imagine doing these type of tours with another company. We are one big family, friends all over the UK. Great roads, great people, great company and a massive laugh. Lets you forget about general life and concentrate on biking.

Stuart Ross

I have just completed the 2023 Black forest tour B with https://freedommotorcycletours.com/ In short, don’t know these guys, never met them before the tour and therefore totally unbiased. Never done a tour before, never ridden in a group larger than 3 and never taken a bike to Europe. Start to finish, excellent!! Would not hesitate to recommend or use them again. Very good hosts and they worked very hard to give me a truly fab holiday. Thank you very much Dee and Face (Company owners and host on this tour) you made me feel very welcome and at home. Great company, fab group and amazing holiday. Big hugs and would be a pleasure to come on tour with you again. If you are in any doubt about which company to go on tour with in Europe. These guys are straight talking, no BS and excellent.

Keith Jolly

Face is an absolute legend for making sure that everyone is happy with every aspect of the tour and is the perfect host to share a few beers with over a meal. His tolerance of my initial inexperience was a very significant factor in my returning each year along with my gaining confidence.

Ian Leedham

The Ardennes tour (2023) was my first European riding experience, having only passed my bike test 2 years ago (perfect storm of pandemic and mid-life crisis!). As a relatively new rider, I had some reservations about my ability, but I needn’t have worried - the Freedom Motorcycle Tour experience is incredibly welcoming and set up from the start to accommodate all levels of experience. I spent a fantastic few days with a great group of people, had a load of laughs, the riding was amazing, and the hotel was superb (great weather too!). Face and Dee are incredibly knowledgeable and supportive, and they make sure you have a great trip - I honestly can’t recommend it enough. Many of our group had been on previous tours with FMT, which says a lot, and I’ll definitely be going on another one; can’t wait!

Michael Taylor

The name says it all, I have done a few trips with FMT all been ace, trust me you have the BIGGEST smile ever an as always Dee an Face will literally move mountains to help you.

Keith Ramsden

I have been riding for 40 year and I chose Freedom Motorcycle Tours based on the reviews that I read. I think the bit I liked the most was the hotels. Freedom to me is professionalism and excellence.

With FMT you get exactly that FREEDOM! Freedom to enjoy yourself not having to worry about routes, destinations, hotels etc. Its all well planned in a professional but relaxed manner so you can just enjoy the ride and chill out at night and enjoy your holiday. Once you have been on tour with FMT you just come back for more.

Glenn Regan

For us when we book a tour company we really are putting our trust in the hands of that company and the people that run it. And since our first trip in 2016 through to our last trip at the end of the 2019 season, Face, Dee and Freedom have made sure our tours away are the best they can be.

Motocadia have been running big adventure bike tours for off road riders to Portugal for over 4 years, this trip will allow you to use and enhance your off road skills and to find out what you and your adventure bike can do given great riding conditions. This is a 4 star trip, with varied off road riding, and some stunning road sections as well. This is great fun, ride miles and miles of trails, all legal, no gates or fences, Portugal is some where new and not really known to many but we guarantee you will be amazed at what the country has to offer. See opposite for full details. Portugal has a huge terrain for smaller enduro size bikes and we can offer a trip for groups of 10 riders with enduro bikes, as a fly ride trip, ask us for details. This is hard enduro and you need to be a competent off road rider, with the right bike.

We have taken our experience of running off road trips for large adventure style bikes and will be running in 2010 another off road adventure to Morocco. This trip is different to others as you get to ride from Malaga and ride Northern Morocco right down to Fes and then South to the desert. All tracks and trials can accommodate large adventure bikes, some days are long but the riding is not tricky. All hotels are 4 star and have been hand picked. The Morocco adventure also uses a land rover as back up and bike recovery, all trips are accompanied by at least 1 person who is multi lingual. See opposite for full details.

Our tour starts in Plymouth and with an overnight hop over to Santander we soon enter the jagged, deeply fissured Picos De Europa, a mountain range that offers not only some of Europe’s most spectacular scenery but some of the best roads a motorcyclist could dream of. We glide through sleepy little towns and empty bends towards the well-beaten tracks of the Pilgrim trail which will bring us to our first pit stop.

The next day brings scenery that will make you believe you’ve stepped into Jurassic Park with its craggy canyons and harsh mountaintops, we ride immersed in this dramatic landscape on winding roads towards Santiago de Compostela the final point on the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. Here we can have a day off the bikes to explore the quaint granite streets and alleys or if you’re still raring to go in the saddle there is a ride out to Cap Finisterre, believed in Roman times to be the end of the known world.

John, Magellan Guide

Spain & Portugal are just epic! From riding the Picos de Europa to the Douro Valley and the Pilgrims route, there is something for everyone. With Magellan you'll experience the best roads in both countries!

Power to the Picos

On a route only known to the locals and us here at Magellan we ride across the border from Spain via the high hills of western Galicia and the Da Peneda-Geres National Park who’s rugged hills are home to deer, wolves and golden eagles towards Guimaraes, the ancient capital of Portugal. From there we cruise through the Douro valley, one of the oldest wine growing regions in the world, but this world heritage site is not just a treat for the wine connoisseurs amongst you. With its beautiful scenery and quiet roads that wind alongside the Douro river it’s a bikers dream in every sense!

From one dream to another we then take on the Sierra de Estrella natural park situated in the largest mountain range in Portugal, here in the park we spend two nights and with one of the best ride out days on any tour we venture to the Torre. Standing at 1,993 metres this is the highest point of mainland Portugal and offers exceptional views for miles. If standing on top of the world isn’t enough did we mention the clear, smooth roads and hairpin after hairpin to get there?

motorcycle tours in spain and portugal

It's Gin & Tonic O'clock!

motorcycle tours in spain and portugal

We love the Sierra de Estrella.

As we cross back into Spain be on the lookout! We ride through the Sierra de la Culebra hunting reserve famed for being one of the last places you can see a subspecies of the grey wolf in the wild - The Iberian Wolf. A sighting of this  animal from the seat of your bike is a real treat and with food left out for them by the rangers you may just get lucky! After an afternoon of pretending to be David Attenborough we cruise to our hotel in Zamora ringed by well preserved defensive walls and gates where we can relax over dinner and drinks with views of the castle.

We head north through the beautiful Spanish countryside to our lunch stop right beside the lake of Riano with its stunning mountains providing the backdrop for a well earned break. From here we carry on riding north to the place where our journey started, the Picos De Europa. We have a free day in this eye-popping motorcyclist's playground before we spend our last night reminiscing about hairpinned mountain passes, jaw dropping scenery, quaint villages, exquisite food and possible wolf sightings. We can get on the ferry the next day having made wonderful new friends and wondering where our next adventure on the bike will be!

Let us show you what all the fuss is about with the Picos and then double down with a serving of Portugal's finest roads to boot.

Tour highlights

The Picos de Europa: A dramatically beautiful combination of geological magnificence, lush green vegetation and fantastic roads provides the setting for the beginning of our tour.

Santiago de Compostela: T he capital of Galicia in the Northwest of Spain. A pilgrimage destination for 300,000 Caminos a year, the city is steeped in history and culture.

Western Galicia: The quiet, smooth hills are a bikers dream. With empty, perfectly tarmacked roads, bucketfuls of twisties and no traffic, this ride is incredible.

motorcycle tours in spain and portugal

I very much enjoyed this tour, the roads and chosen routes, the accommodation, the sights, and the riding were all first class. It was great fun, so much so that since I've been away with them on the Corsica, Bosnia, Morocco and Italy tours...

motorcycle tours in spain and portugal

Da Peneda-Geres National Park in Northern Portugal: Inhabited by many different species, from long-horned wild cows to wolves- and we get the chance to see all of them as we drive our scenic route. Breath-taking scenery, granite villages and oak forests make this National Park a must-see.

The Wine growing region of the Douro Valley: O ne of the oldest wine regions in the world, but remarkably quiet and un-touristy. The region is full of quiet roads and steep mountainous climbs with wonderful views of traditional vineyards.

Sierra de Estrella: U ndoubtedly home to some of the finest biking roads in Europe. So far it's managed to stay off the radar for most UK bikers and we hope it stays that way so we can keep enjoying it all to ourselves for the foreseeable future. That's all we’re going to say about it. You’ll see when you get there!

Sierra de la Culebra hunting reserve: O ne of the last places you can see the Iberian wolf in the wild and our groups always relish sharing stories of ‘almost spots’ over dinner afterwards.

Historic city of Zamora: R inged by well preserved defensive walls and gates this historic city has been described as a ‘Romanesque Museum’, we stay in the old town and usually take a walk before dinner to go and explore some of the sights.

Common questions about this trip

What’s the weather like on this tour?

We pick the date of this trip to get the best mix of riding conditions on the different elevations we cover. As you go over the top of the Picos and the day in the Estrella mountains can be chilly while the days over the plains can be quite warm, a sensible mix of vented kit and waterproofs with some base layers should cover all eventualities.

Is what I hear about the Spanish not eating until 10pm correct?

The Spanish do indeed eat late, in fact it’s not unusual for people to go out for dinner at 11pm or later. We’ve tailored the trip to take in English sensibilities and rumbling bellys after a long day’s ride through and normally eat between 8 – 8.30pm.

Can I get a different crossing on this trip?

Of course, if you would like to make your own arrangements to get over to Spain and join the route at the hotel on the first night near Santander just let us know in the comments section of your booking form and we will deduct the cost of the included crossing from your booking.

How our rating system works →

IMTBIKE ROUTE rating

It is essential to know the different skill levels needed to participate in the IMTBIKE TOURS that are offered to you. IMTBIKE makes sure that it offers different tours for all riding styles and levels. The IMTBIKE team always works diligently in designing our routes. This is a laborious process which entails reviewing all road choices before selecting the best option for an IMTBIKE tour.

The most experienced motorcyclists looks for roads that require technical skill; narrow twisty roads with little traffic and endless curves. But these same roads would be too difficult for a less experienced rider.

The local driving habits, the amount of traffic, the asphalt quality and the radius of the curves vary considerably from country to country and even in different regions of the same country. They will also vary depending on the season of the year. All of these factors have been studied by IMTBIKE and have been taken into consideration when rating our tours.

IMTBIKE thinks it is also important to know about the different types of roads you will be enjoying on your tour. To understand the road types easier, IMTBIKE has divided them into two categories, and we have calculated an approximate percentage of each on all of our tours.

  • TOURING ROADS: These are wider roads comprised mainly of larger radius sweepers. They are still curvy roads but not tight mountainous twisty curves. Please remember that you will ride very few straight roads on IMTBIKE tours!
  • CHALLENGING ROADS: These are roads that are tight twisty turns which require more technical skill. Many times they will be narrower roads without a shoulder and sometimes with steep inclines or descents. Normally they will be mountainous roads accompanied by spectacular sceneries.

If you have never ridden a motorcycle outside of your country, or if you have little experience riding on mountain roads with many curves, we recommend that you choose a tour rated moderate or intermediate. If you have any questions or doubts please do not hesitate to call or email us. We are always happy to answer your questions to make sure that you choose the best tour for your riding level.

This route offers wider sweeping turns that are easy to maneuver. This route may have some tighter turns in a few places but this will be the exception. Regardless, even on moderate tours you must be able to ride a large cylinder motorcycle in any condition. Never plan to learn how to ride a motorcycle on an IMTBIKE tour. We recommend having a minimum of 8.000 km (5.000 miles) of experience riding a large cylinder motorcycle to participate on a MODERATE rated IMTBIKE Tour and you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.

Intermediate

This route rating can have sections of very twisty curves on narrow roads with no center line to divide the road. There will also wider radius curves on these routes. Traffic conditions can be intense at times in some urban environments and the local driving habits may seem aggressive and unpredictable to you. It is imperative that you are an experienced motorcyclist. We recommend that you have a minimum of 12.000 km (7500 miles) of large cylinder motorcycle experience to participate on a INTERMEDIATE rated IMTBIKE Tour and you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.

This route rating has long sections of technical narrow twisty roads and sometimes single lane roads. These twisty roads will often be in mountains where steep inclines and descents will be commonplace. Some riding days can be long and challenging. Traffic conditions can be intense at times in some urban environments and the local driving habits may seem aggressive and unpredictable to you. It is imperative that you are a very experienced motorcyclist on a large cylinder motorcycle. We recommend that you have a minimum of 16.000 km (10.000 miles) of large cylinder motorcycle experience on an ADVANCE rated IMTBIKE Tour and of course you should ride a motorcycle on a regular basis at home.

IMTBIKE Average Daily Riding Hours

5 to 7 hours 6 to 8 hours 7 to 9 hours

How many hours a day you ride on a tour is important information in helping you decide on the right IMTBIKE tour for you. Some tour members want to ride as many hours as possible everyday, while others prefer to stop more frequently and dedicate more time to enjoying the scenery, visiting cultural sights and arrive at the hotel earlier to relax before dinner. The daily riding hours are calculated including the coffee breaks and photo stops but they do not include the time taken for lunch.

Normally we’ll start our riding day at 9:30am and we will take about a one hour lunch break sometime between 1pm and 2pm. So if the daily riding hours for a given tour are 5-7, then you will arrive at the hotel between 3:30pm- 5:30pm depending on the average speed of the group.

Madrid Arrival

Transfer from the Airport to the Hotel is included. You will have free time to rest or visit the city until the welcome meeting at the hotel in the afternoon. We will enjoy a welcome dinner after the meeting at a typical restaurant Spanish. The first and last day in the itinerary correspond to the arrival and departure days of the tour. You may have to leave a day early depending on your country of origin. Please book your flights taking this into account.

Madrid – Soria

We will leave Madrid's hustle behind heading northward towards the Sierra de Guadarrama Mountains to breathe in the tranquility of the little-known roads along the Black Towns of Guadalajara. We will end the day arriving at one of the most unpopulated yet prettiest areas of Spain within the province of Soria.

 Soria – La Rioja

Today we can expect solitary mountains and landscapes full of charm. We will start with the Lobo River Canyon and then skirt the little-known Sierra de la Cebollera Natural Park that will give us access to the unmistakable vineyard extensions of “La Rioja”. Here our beloved Rioja Wine is produced!

La Rioja – Ribera del Duero

Today we will go from the famous Rioja wine region to another wine region equally treasured called Ribera del Duero. To get there, in addition to the expected vineyards surrounding the entire course of the Douro River, you will enjoy incredible riding crossing the Sierra de la Demanda Mountains.

Ribera de Duero – Salamanca

Your riding day today will be softer sweepers. It will be equally beautiful since we will be crossing areas that host other prestigious wine regions such as Rueda and Toro which are well known by local wine connoisseurs. You will also cross the monumental cities of Tordesillas and Zamora.

Salamanca – Rest Day

The historical university city of Salamanca deserves an extra day to enjoy all of its charms. Its city center is an open-air museum and a World Heritage Site declared by UNESCO. We definitely recommend a walk through its historic streets and ancestral university that will transport you to another era.

Salamanca – El Bierzo

Today we’ll head north in search of other wine regions and beautiful vistas. We will pass near the border with Portugal and reach the first mountainous areas with its twisty roads all the way to the foothills of the majestic Cantabrian Mountains.

El Bierzo – Bragança

You will see many scallop-shelled pilgrims today as the first stretch of mountain road is also part of the Camino de Santiago. We then have an unforgettable journey southward on mountainous back roads. These mountain roads link small villages unfamiliar to tourism and will take us to the border with Portugal which we will cross to sleep in the historic city of Bragança.

Bragança – Guimaraes

Our first day in Portugal will lead us all along Northern Portugal and give us some of the most enjoyable curves for motorcycle riding. These curves will lead us on excellent asphalt through beautiful and varying landscape all the way to Guimarães, known as the “Cradle of Portugal.”

Guimaraes – Porto

Today is another perfect day to combine two passions; motorcycles and wine. The winding roads will combine a beautiful green landscape full of vineyards and mountains, rivers and valleys while crossing the “Vinho Verde” territory. We’ll then continue by following the Douro River and all the vineyards that grow in the slopes of its shore towards the Atlantic Ocean.

Porto – Rest Day

This second rest day allows you to visit a city that, in spite of its extensive history, grows in attractiveness every year! Crossing the impressive Luís I Bridge to visit some of the Vilanova de Gaia Port wineries is a great plan. This is where the famous Porto wine ages. However, Porto offers much more.

Porto – Ciudad Rodrigo

We’ll start the day heading inland by following the course of the Duoro River upstream. We will then spice it up on the well laid out roads known only to locals and enjoy its phenomenal asphalt all the way to the Spanish border. We will sleep in the fortified border town of Ciudad Rodrigo. A spectacular place.

Ciudad Rodrigo – Ávila

We’ll return to the mountains visiting medieval cities along the way and following the best motorcycle routes running through the impressive Sierra de Gredos Mountains. We will rest in Ávila, a medieval walled city with the most extensive original walls in the world. This city also houses a historical center that will take us back in time.

Ávila – Madrid

The last day of this adventure comes with surprises like Segovia. A stop here to admire its Castle-Alcázar is a must. It is said that the Disney Castle used the Alcázar of Segovia as its inspiration. Its Cathedral and the impressive Roman Aqueduct are also amazing and worth visiting. After this, the mountains of Madrid will give way to the last section of the ride before we say goodbye to our bikes.

Flight home

Today you will say your goodbyes to the guides and the other tour members (now your new friends) as you make your way to the airport to fly home. Until our next motorcycle adventure together! Hasta Luego!
