Five things to know: Gran Canaria Lopesan Open

Five things to know as the European Tour returns to the Canary Islands for the inaugural Gran Canaria Lopesan Open

Melonares Golf

Start of the Canary Islands Swing

The European Tour has a rich history of hosting events in the Canary Islands, but makes its return to Gran Canaria this week for the first time since the Canaries Open de España in 2002, which was won by Sergio Garcia.

The inaugural event marks the start of three consecutive weeks of the new ‘Canary Islands Swing’ and will be followed by back-to-back events in Tenerife: The Tenerife Open and the Tenerife Championship.

Cabrera Bello hosts

Rafa Cabrera Bello, who hails from Gran Canaria, has assumed the role of host of this week’s tournament.

The Ryder Cup star, who impressed on his European Tour debut on the island as a 17-year-old amateur in 2002, said hosting this week was something he is very proud of.

“It’s a proud moment for me to host a tournament on Gran Canaria and I can’t wait to tee off in the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open at Meloneras Golf,” he said.

“Although I’m now lucky to travel all over the world playing golf, I have remained connected to the Canary Islands and was proud to be able to establish the Circuito Juvenil Rafa Cabrera Bello in association with Real Club de Golf de Las Palmas in 2019.

“Although we’re not able to welcome spectators in person in the current climate, I hope that young players will be inspired by having two European Tour events in the Canary Islands, and I thank everyone involved in making these tournaments happen.”

Melonares Golf

In previous years, the European Tour has visited Campo de Golf da Maspalomas (1995 and 1997) and El Cortijo Club de Campo (2002) in Gran Canaria, but this is the first time an event has been staged at Meloneras Golf.

The course, a 6,715 yard par 70, was designed by Ron Kirby and opened in 2006. It was the sixth course to be built on Gran Canaria – and is one our host this week has a lot of knowledge of.

“This course we’re playing this week wasn’t even built when I was a kid, but I have been here a lot to practice during my professional career,” said Cabrera Bello.

“It’s a golf course that has been built for tourism with generous fairways and more friendly bunkers, but they have been firming up the greens, and the wind is one thing that no one can control,” Cabrera Bello said of the course this week.

“I think if the wind doesn’t come up like it could the scores will be very low, which the course is designed for, and if the wind does pick up its going to be a tougher test. It’s a great course. I love the back nine, because there are a few holes beside the cliff and there are some daunting tee shots and approaches”

Inside the field

Rafa Cabrera Bello is undoubtedly the home favourite, but he’s also part of an impressive field which features three of the most recent winners on the European Tour: John Catlin, Justin Harding, and Antoine Rozner.

Rozner is making his return to the European Tour after an impressive debut at the WGC-Dell Technologies Match Play, where he defeated reigning U.S. Open champion Bryson DeChambeau in his opening match, and he’s hopeful that he’ll be able to continue the consistent run of recent form that saw him capture the Commercial Bank Qatar Masters title in March.

“The game is good, and I like when the wind blows so if it can blow like it did in Qatar for example I think it could suit my game so we’ll see,” said Rozner, who is the second highest ranked player in the field after Andy Sullivan.

Other players in great form heading into this week include Kurt Kitayama, Calum Hill and Sam Horsfield, who all have some of lowest scoring averages on Tour this season and have at least two top tens already in 2021.

Fantasy Race to Dubai

The European Tour’s Fantasy Race to Dubai continues in Gran Canaria this week, and it’s never too late to sign up.

Players can create their own six-man team and compete in Private Leagues, Weekly Top 10 Challenges and Head to Head competitions, with prizes given out weekly and across the season.

Unsure who to pick? From home favourite Rafa Cabrera Bello to Sam Horsfield and Antoine Rozner, our Fantasy Golf Experts Kit Alexander and Sophie Walker have you covered as they explain who they favour in this week’s edition of Ones To Watch, ( click here to read ).

Garrick Higgo is a 21-year-old you should be watching after a second Euro Tour victory in 24 career starts

1314366473

With a second European Tour win since September, Garrick Higgo will move into the World top 100 and likely secure a spot in his first major at next month's PGA Championship.

Warren Little

It took Garrick Higgo only seven starts to register his maiden win on the European Tour, last year’s Open de Portugal. And 17 starts later, the 21-year-old lefty from South African has doubled his tally. Posting back-to-back 63 over the par-70 Meloneras resort course in Spain’s Gran Canaria on the weekend, Higgo got himself to 25 under par for the week and claimed victory at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open. Higgo finished three better than Germany’s Maximillian Kieffer, runner-up in Austria last week, who shot a final-round 62 that was the best of a low-scoring day that saw only 10 of the 74-strong field fail to shoot par or better.

Still, it was Higgo’s display that stood out. Arriving on the back of a T-4 finish in Austria last week, only three times did the former Junior Presidents Cup player make worse than par during a breezy 72 holes over the picturesque 6,715-yard course. That is impressive enough, but perhaps more importantly, Higgo made 25 birdies and two eagles. Combined with his paucity of errors, those were numbers that no one could match. Not even Kieffer, whose cards were highlighted by 28 birdies and one eagle, but scarred by as many six dropped shots and one double bogey.

“I wasn’t nervous on the outside,” said Higgo, who started the final round with a two-shot edge over three others for the €230,500 first prize. “But it was the first time ever that I have had a lead. All my other wins have been from behind, so I know what it is like to beat someone and how things can change. At first, I was just trying to keep myself in the battle”

That he did with some success. Bogey-free all day, Higgo’s up-and-down for par at the penultimate hole all but sealed the win. The closing birdie he made on the downwind 528-yard par-5 18th was a formality and only confirmed his superiority.

“There is always room for improvement,” said Higgo, who will move into the top 100 on the World Ranking for the first time, likely earning him a spot into his first major championship at next month’s PGA Championship at Kiawah Island. “But my game is trending the right way. I have been working hard and there are things I can get better at, so I will just take every week as it comes and see where my game goes. I haven’t been playing that well at the start of the year, so this is amazing.”

As for Kieffer, the 30-year-old was philosophical about his second consecutive runner-up finish. In truth, he was never nearer than two shots to the eventual champion, so there was no real reason for any regret.

“I was just trying to go shot for shot,” said Kieffer, who made seven birdies and an eagle en route to his best-of-the-day score. “Even though it is windy you have to have that mindset. I learned that last week. You just have to make as many birdies as possible. And I was just trying to do that. I did a decent job today.”

Decent. But second best. Again.

Talk about getting out of the gate quickly.

Garrick Higgo’s incredible start on Saturday set the UNLV product up nicely, giving him the 54-hole lead at the European Tour’s Gran Canaria Lopesan Open in Spain.

The 21-year-old Higgo was 5 under for the day after his first four holes — stringing together birdies on Nos. 1, 2 and 3 at Meloneras Golf Club before dropping an eagle on the fourth hole.

The South African, who already has a Euro Tour victory under is belt after winning last fall’s Open de Portugal, finished with a 29 on the front and closed the day with a 63. He sits at 18 under for the tournament, two shots ahead of Matthias Schwab, Matthieu Pavin and Connor Syme.

Higgo is currently 110th in the Official World Golf Ranking, but his standing in the Race to Dubai would skyrocket if he holds on for the victory. A win projects to push him to 16th in the European Tour’s season-long competition, up 68 spots from his current standing.

South Africa's Higgo wins in Gran Canaria for second European Tour title

South African youngster Garrick Higgo held off a spirited challenge from German Maximilian Kieffer to win his second European Tour title at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open on Sunday.

Higgo, 21, took the lead in the third round at Meloneras Golf on Saturday when he carded the lowest round of his European Tour career with a seven-under-par 63 and moved four shots clear by the turn in the final round on Sunday.

Kieffer, who lost out in a five-hole playoff in Austria last week, stepped up the pressure in the final round with a 62 but Higgo kept his composure and signed for another 63 to get to 25-under overall and secure a three-shot victory.

Higgo finished his flawless round with a two-putt birdie on the last to secure his second win in 24 Tour appearances, having lifted his maiden title at last season's Open de Portugal.

"I can't put it into words, it feels amazing," Higgo said.

"It wasn't over until the last hole really, I knew anything could happen, especially with the wind coming up. It was a bit stressful."

Denmark's Jeff Winther gained four shots in the last three holes to claim third place on 21-under, two strokes ahead of England's Sam Horsfield .

Gran Canaria 2021 R4 - Higgo claims second European Tour title in Gran Canaria

Estimated reading time: 9 minutes

Garrick Higgo held off the challenge of Maximilian Kieffer to win his second European Tour title at the Gran Canaria Lopesan Open.

"It’s unreal. Jeez, I can’t put it into words, it feels amazing. It’s quite a relief finishing now."

Gran Canaria 2021 R4

The South African had carded the lowest round of his European Tour career with a 63 on day three to put himself in the driving seat and he had extended his lead to four shots by the turn.

Kieffer - fresh off a play-off defeat last week in Austria - came home in 30 to sign for a 62 and pile on the pressure but Higgo kept his cool and registered another 63 to get 25 under par and seal a three shot victory.

"I felt great yesterday so I was looking forward to getting out today," said Kieffer. "I hit great shots the front nine, wouldn’t say I struggled but the putting wasn’t as great as it has been the first two days maybe, and I three putted nine which was a bit disappointing at that moment, but then the back nine I started to just go for it. A nice eagle on ten and from then on, I just played phenomenal golf on the back nine."

Finishing in style 🐦 A tap in birdie for a closing 63 and a three-shot victory 👏 #GranCanariaLopesanOpen pic.twitter.com/F9ll2WJ0eu — The European Tour (@EuropeanTour) April 25, 2021

"I thought shot by shot. I think I birdied the short par four over the cliff which is the toughest drive, and I think I was 21-under then and I thought maybe I am close now but then I saw that Garrick was 23 so my mindset didn’t change at all. I was just trying to make as many birdies as possible."

"I was just trying to go shot for shot. Even though it is windy you have to have the mindset. I learnt that last week. You have to have the mindset to make as many birdies as possible, so I was just trying to do that, and I did a decent job of that on the back nine today."

Dane Jeff Winther picked up four shots in his last three holes to sign for a 64 and get to 21-under, two shots clear of England's Sam Horsfield.

Higgo's maiden victory at last season's Open de Portugal at Royal Óbidos came in just his seventh event and this triumph at Meloneras Golf arrives in his 24th.

That makes him the fastest South African to two wins in European Tour history not including Major Championships, and the victory could also move the 21-year-old up to a career best 65th on the Official World Golf Ranking.

"I wasn’t nervous on the outside, but it was the first time ever that I have had a lead, you know starting the day, because all my other wins have been from behind," said Higgo. "So I know what it is like to beat someone and I knew that it could change even on the 17th, so I was just trying to keep myself in the battle."

"Oh it's tracking..." @garrick_higgo takes a three-shot lead into the back nine. #GranCanariaLopesanOpen pic.twitter.com/3d1WjXPER2 — The European Tour (@EuropeanTour) April 25, 2021

"There is always room for improvement. My game is trending the right way. I have been working hard and there are things I can get better at, so I will just take every week as it comes and see where my game goes."

"All of us dream to do things amazing. I spoke to Gary (Player) last night actually and he just said that there is no such thing as a lead and you should play like you are two behind, so that was nice from him and he has said it to me so many times, but I have never really had a lead, so I haven’t had to worry about that."

Higgo’s victory secured a South African double, with Brandon Stone having won the Limpopo Championship on the European Challenge Tour earlier in the day, and his birdie on 18 meant he also claimed the 500th win by a former Challenge Tour player on the European Tour.

Garrick Higgo claimed his second European Tour title at the Gran Canaria Open

Garrick higgo shot a final-round 63, finishing on 25-under-par to secure victory by three shots at the meloneras golf club..

Garrick Higgo secured his second European Tour title, shooting 7-under-par in the final round at the Gran Canaria Open.

The South African entered the final round at Meloneras Golf Club with a two-shot lead, after he shot another 7-under-par 63 on Saturday.

Higgo began on Sunday in a similar fashion by making a birdie on the par-4 second hole and then an eagle on the par-5 4th hole to extend his advantage.

Higgo sealed his first European Tour victory at the Open de Portugal in September 2020 and after a tied fourth finish at the Austrian Open last week, he has now doubled his career tally.

Kieffer shot 62 in the final round, including seven birdies and an eagle on the par-4 10th hole on his way to an 8-under-par round, but it wasn't enough for the 30-year-old.

Jeff Winther, who is yet to win on the European Tour, shot a 62 of his own in the third round at Meloneras Golf Club and began the day three behind Higgo.

The Dane made four birdies on the back nine and also eagled the par-5 18th hole, but bogies at the 10th and 15th holes ultimately meant he couldn't reach Higgo on 21-under-par.

Englishman Sam Horsfield has won twice on the European Tour and finished fourth at the Gran Canaria Open on 19-under-par, with a final-round score of 4-under-par.

The 'master plan' for the Salobre Old and New courses begins in Gran Canaria

The Salobre Old and New golf courses in Gran Canaria have a brand-new master plan, designed by David Williams Golf Design just last year. They're making some exciting changes to improve these golf courses.

Alejandro González, the director of golf at Salobre Golf & Resort , kicked off this plan in the summer of 2023. They started with the Old Course and have a smart strategy to save water on the golf courses. They've also removed some grass patches.

David Williams Golf Design and SURTEC Golf Agronomy teamed up to make plans for each hole. They want to make a clear distinction between the green grassy fairways and the sandy waste areas.

They worked with local volcanic sand to make surfaces that are great for walking or a buggy. If the golf balls went off course, they didn't want them to bounce too much, so they were going to add some cement, but ended up opting for a huge 5,000 kg roller instead.

SURTEC Golf Agronomy altered the sprinkler system. Over 700 circular sprinklers were turned into sectoral ones. This conserves water and makes outdoor spaces seem natural using native sand. They're also recycling some of the removed grass to cover up old bunkers, which were taken out as part of the David Williams Golf Design plan.

Next summer, they're planning to build new bunkers and give the existing ones a facelift. They hope to fully implement the Salobre Old Course master plan in the next few years, and then they'll work on the Salobre New Course.

Spanish Islands – Where To Play On The Canaries And Mallorca

Son Gual Mallorca

Canary Islands

If you are a regular visitor to the Canaries , you will know it is somewhere that is well worth taking the clubs.

Anfi Tauro, on Gran Canaria’s south-west coast, might just claim the number one spot.

Set with a contrasting backdrop of dramatic volcanic mountains and the glimmering Atlantic, it provides a stern test.

Although you will need to be fairly precise from both the tee and with your approach play, you can’t fail to enjoy the experience.

For example, the par-3 13th, which plays down over the rocky landscape, is a real heart-stopper.

Tenerife also features a wonderful collection of courses, with Golf del Sur one of the most revered.

The former Tenerife Open venue has an engaging ruggedness, its bunkers made from black, volcanic sand.

Costa Adeje, meanwhile, which hosted back-to-back European Tour events in April and May, is no less stunning.

With wild flowers, cacti, reddish-pink rocks and deep gullies, it is impossible not to wonder at the colourful surroundings.

You cannot tick Tenerife off the list without playing Buenavista – holiday golf at its best.

Part of its charm is that it is a little off the beaten track, but Seve Ballesteros’ layout – which opened in 2003 – is a joy, no matter what level you play at.

Comprising six par threes, six par fours and six par fives, the cliff-top location makes for a rollercoaster ride, and offers spectacular views of the Atlantic that will live long in the memory.

To win the bragging rights within your golfing circle, it is well worth taking a 45-minute ferry trip from Tenerife to Gomera, which is where you will find Tecina. Somehow the views here crank up a notch, with the volcanic landscape in one direction and the sea the other.

All the while, it has the feel of playing through a botanical garden. Island golf doesn’t get much better.

If you are looking to take a golfing trip to Mallorca , the largest of the four main islands is home to a cluster of top courses, many of which are in close proximity to its beautiful and vibrant capital, Palma.

Many would have Son Gual at number one. Set in 156 acres of glorious Mediterranean landscape, the championship layout is fit to host tournament golf of the highest level, so don’t expect an easy ride.

Water is a constant danger throughout, as are its sweeping bunkers, and it offers a technical challenge like nowhere else on the island.

There are many memorable holes, but the 18th might top the lot – a thrilling par 5 to bring your round to a close.

There are some 20 courses to choose from in Mallorca, but you should make time to visit the island’s oldest layout – Golf Son Vida, a charming spot where many of the game’s greats have battled it out, including Seve Ballesteros, who triumphed here in 1990.

The course falls under Arabella Golf Mallorca’s umbrella, along with Son Muntaner and Son Quint.

It is a fine trio, and while Son Vida gets a little tight in places, golfers of all abilities have a playable 54-hole option here, and one that is easy to put together.

Venture to the other side of the island from Palma – which can be done in approximately an hour – and there are a number of other courses well worth playing.

From the five-star Carrossa Resort, not far from the charming town of Arta in the north-east, you are a short drive from Alcanada, which certainly vies for top spot.

Its lush fairways are manicured to perfection, as are the greens, and the view across the bay to Alcudia is a photo opportunity you won’t want to miss.

Pula Golf is another terrific venue. Two-time Masters champion Jose Maria Olazabal may have redesigned the layout here, but the Spaniard is very much a fan of making courses playable for pros as well as mid-handicappers, and it is a place that attracts many a celebrity, including one of the island’s most famous residents, Rafael Nadal.

Dean Burmester dominated the field on the final day to ease to a five-shot victory and a second European Tour title at the Tenerife Open.

The South African posted nine birdies on his way to a round-of-the-day 62 at Golf Costa Adeje and pulled clear of the chasing pack, finishing on 25 under and comfortably ahead of playing partner Nicolai von Dellingshausen.

Von Dellingshausen eagled his final hole to grab second on his own ahead of Adrian Meronk and Kalle Samooja, with Austrian Golf Open winner John Catlin a further stroke back in fifth spot.

"There's no words that can describe it," Burmester told Sky Sports . "It's four years of struggle and hard work. To go bogey-free is world class."

Burmester holed a 10-foot birdie at the par-five first and fired his approach to four feet at the next to pick up another shot, before three straight birdies from the fifth lifting him top of the leaderboard.

The world No 168 converted from 10 feet to save par at the ninth and reach the turn in 30, with Burmester following birdies at the 11th and 13th by almost holing out from the 15th fairway to set up a close-range gain and go eight under for the day.

Burmester got up and down from the fringe at the par-three 16th and rolled in a 15-footer to save par at the next to maintain his blemish-free card, before signing off his winning round with a two-putt birdie from 30 feet at the par-five last.

Von Dellingshausen started the day tied for the lead but quickly slipped out of contention when he stuttered to a front-nine 35, with the German recovering to birdie the 11th and make a 10-foot eagle at the 18th to get to 20 under.

Samooja, the other overnight co-leader, was three under after five holes but saw his hopes fade when he bogeyed the tenth and then failed to register a birdie on the back nine, with Meronk carding a four-under 67 to also hold a share of second.

Gran Canaria Lopesan Open champion Garrick Higgo followed last week's victory by ending the week tied-eighth, while Jamie Donaldson was the best of the British contingent as he finished on 15 under and in a share of 12th.
