big seven travel best beaches

Global travel site Big 7 Travel has released its annual list of 'The 50 Best Beaches In The World '.

The list is now in its 5th year, using aggregated scores from previous media results, official Blue Flag locations, social media popularity and contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team, these are the most amazing beaches to visit this year.

It's a diverse list, with pink sand covered in crushed seashells, crystalline lagoons and plenty of Islands, with two Australian favourites also featuring.

Here are the top 10 'best beaches' in the world.

  • Beach Holidays

10. Hyams Beach, Australia

10. Hyams Beach, Australia

Hyams Beach is just three hours south of Sydney, but between its pine forests and white sands, it feels worlds apart. It's an excellent spot for snorkelling, thanks to its gentle waves, and it's popular with stingrays too. Keep an eye out for playful dolphins for the ultimate photo opp

9. Lang Co Beach, Vietnam

9. Lang Co Beach, Vietnam

This little-known beach is a small cove below the Hai Van Pass – an incredibly scenic road that snakes through the mountains of Central Vietnam.

The beach looks beautiful from above, but even better below – it's the perfect place to stop off and tuck into a fresh seafood lunch on the beach.

8. Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

8. Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

This pristine beach is the shining jewel of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The entire beach is just over 3 kilometres long, with no pollution – just pure, white sand and clean water.

A barrier reef found 1.6km out protects Grace Bay from the ocean swells of the Atlantic, so you can swim with ease.

7. Navagio Beach, Greece

7. Navagio Beach, Greece

Named after the 1983 shipwreck, this secluded cove is one of Greece's most photographed beaches, for good reason.

The remnants of the boat sit in the centre of the huge white sandy beach, lapped by turquoise waters and backed by soaring cliffs. It's only accessible by boat, with trips lasting 30 minutes.

6. Source d'Argent, Seychelles

6. Source d'Argent, Seychelles

It's one of the most photographed beaches in the world, but that doesn't make it any less magical.

Beloved for its shallow warm waters and shimmering sand, you'll need to walk through the old L'Union Estate coconut plantation to access the beach.

5. Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays, Australia

5. Whitehaven Beach, Whitsundays, Australia

Making it to all the way up the ranks to fifth spot is this brilliant 7 kilometre white silica sand beach, considered among one of the purest in the world.

The largest of 74 islands in the Whitsundays, the island is right in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef. As well as being one of the world's most unspoiled and beautiful beaches, the sand doesn't retain heat, so it's a fantastic place to walk barefoot, even on a hot day.

4. Kwenda beach, Zanzibar

4. Kwenda beach, Zanzibar

Zanzibar is a haven of white sand beaches, but Kendwa piques it for us. The blinding white sand melts into the emerald waters – a picture-postcard sight.

The beach is lined with hotels, restaurants, and bars, but it's kept pristine and clean. Sip on fresh coconuts, get a massage, or enjoy a cocktail in one of the beach shacks.

3. Jalousie Beach, St Lucia

3. Jalousie Beach, St Lucia

Coming in at number three, this tropical paradise of white sands, crystal clear waters, lush vegetation, and volcanic peaks is a beauty.

Sugar Beach Resort takes up most of the beach, so you'll often hear people refer to this beach as 'Sugar Beach'. It is open to the public, though. There's a 1,800-foot drop in the sea at the base of the volcanic peak, Petit Piton, so it's a hit with snorkellers and scuba divers.

2. Cabo San Juan Beach, Colombia

2. Cabo San Juan Beach, Colombia

Found in Tayrona National Parkm it's a long hike through the tropics to get to the beach, and you'll have to bring your own water. There is a restaurant when you get to the beach, though. The main draw to Cabo San Juan Beach is the campsite – a night under the stars, listening to the calm sea lap onto shore sounds like heaven to us.

1. White Beach, Port Barton, Philippines

1. White Beach, Port Barton, Philippines

Coming out on top is White Beach in the Philippines.

The only way to reach the beach is by hopping on a boat from Port Barton or taking a very bumpy journey in a 4x4 – being hard to reach means the beach is clean and wonderfully quiet.

Think hammocks, powdery white sand, kayaks to rent, and of course, crystal-clear water. All with a backdrop of lush forests. Kayak over to Coconut Beach for a mini adventure.

7 of the Best Beaches in the Florida Keys

Located off the southern coast of Florida , the Florida Keys are a coral cay archipelago which forms the southernmost part of the continental United States. The Florida Keys are famous for its wonderful opportunities for sportfishing, boating, scuba diving, snorkelling, and its bounty of fresh seafood. Of course, one of the big draws of the Keys is the tropical island vibes, including the seemingly endless offering of sun, sea and sand. Looking to explore more? Here are 7 of the best beaches in the Florida Keys.

1. Bahia Honda Beach – Big Pine Key

Bahia Honda State Park is located south of Seven Mile Bridge at mile marker 37, just 12 miles south of Marathon. This secluded white-sand park has three beaches and offers some of the best beachcombing and snorkelling in Florida . Sink into the soft sand and let the soft lapping waves relax you, or grab your snorkel, fins, and head underwater. In the wonderfully warm and clear waters, you’ll spot sponges, soft corals, and a variety of marine species, such as lobsters.

2. Dry Tortugas & Fort Jefferson – Garden Key

Dry Tortugas National Park is situated 108km west of Key West. It is here where you’ll find Fort Jefferson, a huge, unfinished coastal fortress that dates back to 1846. Located on Garden Key, this is one of the largest 19th-century forts in the United States. The watery paradise of Dry Tortugas National Park is only accessible by boat or seaplane. However, marine life and coral reefs thrive because of this remoteness. Dry Tortugas National Park tops the list if you’re looking for the best places to go snorkelling in the Florida Keys . Its remoteness also means that you’ll have the beach to yourself, well, you’ll be able to find a secluded spot, that’s for sure. Enjoy strolling the sandy shoreline, sunbathing, swimming, and paradise island bliss.

3. Fort Zachary Taylor – Key West

The Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park is home to a Civil War-era fort and a stunning soft sand beach fringed by palm trees. This is the southernmost beach in the United States and just a stone’s throw from Barbados and Cuba. So, you’re basically on a Caribbean holiday. The beach is at the southern end of the park and is a great place for picnicking, swimming, snorkelling, paddling and fishing.

4. Higgs Beach – Key West

Clarence S. Higgs Memorial Beach Park is located on the Atlantic Ocean in Key West. It is ideal if you like to do activities whilst on the beach. For instance, there are volleyball and tennis courts, safe waters for swimming and snorkelling and a bike path. Located in the Old Town, this is a very laid-back beach that doesn’t often get crowded. It also has a long wooden pier which is perfect for strolling and gazing out at the ocean. Higgs Beach has some of the best off-the-beach snorkelling in Key West.

Wooden pier in Higgs Beach, a popular Key West beach in Florida known for snorkeling, tropical turquoise waters and white sand. Summer vacation in the tropics. Relaxing and summertime concept.

5. Calusa Beach – Big Pine Key

Calusa Beach is within the Bahia Honda State Park on Big Pine Key. The beach is adjacent to the Bahia Honda Bridge and is a popular spot for kayaking, swimming and snorkelling. Calusa Beach is a postcard-perfect setting with palm trees and white sand that gently slopes into warm azure blue waters.

6. Sombrero Beach – Marathon

Sombrero Beach is a beautiful park and a sandy beach on the Atlantic Ocean. With picnic pavilions, volleyball courts, restrooms and showers, it is an ideal spot for spending the whole day at the beach. Sombrero Beach is a turtle nesting beach, and from April through October, Loggerhead Turtles come onto the beach at night to lay their eggs.

Sombrero Beach with palm trees on the Florida Keys, Marathon, Florida, USA. Tropical and paradise destination for vacation.

7. Anne’s Beach – Islamorada

Anne’s Beach is located at Lower Matecumbe Key and is dedicated to local environmentalist Anne Eaton. The water at this beach is very calm; therefore, it’s ideal for families as there is a shallow swimming area great for young children and dogs. Anne’s Beach also has a lovely boardwalk and covered picnic tables, so it is a serene place to come for lunch and a stroll.

Kaua‘i’s ‘Tunnels’ makes Big 7 Travel’s Best Beaches in the World list

big seven travel best beaches

Tunnels Beach on the North Shore of Kaua‘i has earned a spot on a global travel site’s “50 Best Beaches in the World” list.

Big 7 Travel put Tunnels, also known as Makua, at No. 21 on its list, describing Tunnels as the “ultimate snorkeling spot, with the picturesque backdrop of Mount Makana and lush jungles.”

Lava tubes form the many underwater caverns at Tunnels, which give the beach its name.

Tunnels was the sole Hawai‘i beach to score a placement on Big 7’s list. Other included beaches included San Fruttuoso (a small pebbled beach in Italy) and Butterfly Valley in Turkey.

Big 7 Travel awarded its No. 1 spot to White Beach near Port Barton in the Philippines.

“This gorgeous stretch of sand near Port Barton is a pristine gem. The only way to reach the beach is by hopping on a boat from Port Barton or taking a very bumpy journey in a 4×4 – being hard to reach means the beach is clean and wonderfully quiet,” the Big 7 Travel list reads. “Think hammocks, powdery white sand, kayaks to rent, and of course, crystal-clear water. All with a backdrop of lush forests. Kayak over to Coconut Beach for a mini adventure.”

An Australian beach has just been named the fifth best in a global poll

Two of our gorgeous beaches actually made it into the top ten

Maya Skidmore

Australians have so much to be proud of across our beautiful country, from natural wonders to landmarks like the amazing Uluru , but undoubtedly one of our top attractions are the pristine beaches of our coastline. We're known globally for our vivid blue seas, coral reefs and picturesque views, garnering attention from far and wide for our sparkling shores. In fact, not too long ago, ten Aussie beaches made it into a top 50 global list . So naturally, it makes sense that we're making headlines once again for having some of the best beaches in the world.

Travel site the  Big 7  releases a ‘World’s 50 best beaches’ list every year and excitingly, two Australian beaches cracked the top ten in 2023. A very impressive achievement when you think about how many beaches from across the world are in competition to be number one.

Whitehaven Beach in the Whitsundays took out the title of fifth best beach in the world. This aqua paradise has numerous awards under its belt, and for good reasons. The oasis is on the cusp of the  Great Barrier Reef, tucked away in the crystal waters of far north Queensland. Whitehaven was ranked number five for its bright blue waters, isolated location and pure silica sand – it's considered one of the whitest sandy beaches in the world.

Hill Inlet view from seaplane Whitsundays

To further bolster our Aussie beach pride, Hyams Beach in NSW also came in high on the list at  number ten. This beach is a favourite for its stunning blue water, white sand and is frequented by dolphins and wildlife, making it a special place worthy of a top ten spot.

Hyams Beach. Booderee National Park & Jervis Bay Marine Park

The beach that came out on top this year was White Beach in the Philippines. The isolated slice of coastline is only accessible by boat or a very rugged four-wheel drive, and is fringed by palm trees, turquoise water and lush rainforest.

The top ten in the Big 7’s best beach list for 2023 were:

  • White Beach, Port Barton, Philippines
  • Cabo San Juan Beach – Colombia
  • Jalousie Beach – St Lucia
  • Kendwa Beach, Zanzibar
  • Whitehaven Beach – Whitsunday Islands, Australia
  • Source d’Argent – Seychelles
  • Navagio Beach (Shipwreck Cove) – Zakynthos, Greece
  • Grace Bay – Turks and Caicos
  • Lang Co Beach, Vietnam
  • Hyams Beach – New South Wales, Australia

You can check out the full top 50  here.

Le Morne

The 50 best beaches in the world for 2023 has been revealed, The top prize goes to White Beach in The Philippines, said to be a ‘pristine gem. The guide has been created by Big 7 Travel, which generated it by analysing Blue Flag locations, the social media popularity of beaches and the thoughts of its editorial team.

The top prize goes to White Beach in The Philippines, which is heralded as a ‘pristine gem’ that boasts ‘hammocks, powdery white sand, kayaks to rent, and of course, crystal-clear water’. It’s popular with windsurfers and kite surfers too’ .

It is to be noted that SOURCE D’ARGENT, SEYCHELLES was at the 6 th place. The 34 best beaches in the world

By Lizzie Pook

The 34 best beaches in the world

There’s something about a good beach that enlivens the senses: the briny scent of salt in the air, the calming murmur of waves, the gentle nip of sand whipped up by the soft breeze. A favourite beach is like a favourite poem – individual, important and something that makes our hearts sing, and now more than ever we are dreaming of days spent wriggling our toes in the sand and wallowing in salty water.

Instead of the typical sandy spots dotted with sun umbrellas and gaggles of tourists, we've sought out spaces that you may have to venture a little further for, but that remain incredibly beautiful and very often crowd-free. From the most exquisite beaches in Europe to far-flung stretches in Asia, Africa and more, these are the best beaches in the world.

Palm Cove Australia

1. Palm Cove Beach, Australia

The combination of leaning palm trees on powdery sand makes Palm Cove Beach the epitome of a tropical paradise. The town itself, located in the tropical northeast of Australia , near the city of Cairns, the Daintree Rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef, is home to only 2,000 people, so the sandy stretch is usually free of crowds. Keep an eye out for wildlife though – dolphins and whales can often be seen from the Palm Cover jetty.

2. Honopu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

The only (legal) way to reach remote Honopu is by water, meaning you have to swim from an offshore boat, or from neighboring Kalalau Beach, a quarter of a mile away (fins are a must). But given that the cayenne-coloured cliffs and smooth sands of this isolated spot provided the backdrop for Raiders of the Lost Ark and King Kong , the schlep is cinematically worth it. Since the valley is so isolated, it is also believed to be spiritual, and served as an ancient burial ground for local chiefs. Sleep over at Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort and Spa, a sunshiny retreat.

3. Brekon, Shetland

Wedged between two vivid emerald slabs of green pasture, Brekon is somewhat sheltered from the south-westerly winds that roll through these lands. That said, you’ll want to manifest pretty balmy temperatures to brave the often icy waters. It’s a beautiful spot with clear waters and perfectly powdery sands, but all is not as it seems on a clear summer’s day. Many boats have met their end along these shores – learn all about the treacherous sea at the local museum in Burravoe, which details harrowing accounts and displays fascinating artefacts that have washed up over the years.

Wategos Beach Australia

4. Wategos Beach, Australia

The seaside town of Byron Bay may have started as a bohemian enclave but has since grown to become one of Australia’s prime addresses – Matt Damon, Nicole Kidman and Zac Efron all own houses here. And while any stretch of Bryon’s coastline is pretty, the ultimate spot is Wategoes Beach, a sheltered beach lined with screwpine trees and offering up calm swimming conditions. The beach is also home to a popular walk that leads up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, a particularly scenic spot to be at during sunset.

5. Ora Beach, Indonesia

With a higgledy-piggledy 37,000-mile coastline (the world’s second longest), Indonesia has a glut of beautiful beaches. One of its finest is Ora, snuggled away on the north coast of sparsely populated Seram island. The area is known as Indonesia’s Little Maldives due to its agate seas and white-sugar beaches, but the island still retains something of a wild feel. Seram sits amid several tectonic plates, meaning that the surrounding landscape varies cinematically, from lush, bird-speckled tropical rainforest to ogre-like mountains .

6. Mona Vale Beach, Australia

Less than an hour's drive from Sydney , Mona Vale is the unsung hero of the famed northern beaches. It's technically two beaches separated by a large, sculptural rock. The main beach is a one-kilometre stretch of soft sand, perfect for walking, splashing in the rolling waves and watching the horizon for passing pods of dolphins. There's an ocean-fed lap pool with a children's pool next to it. Days on Mona Vale beach start early – joggers are here from 5am to watch the sunrise before breakfast at the Armchair Collective cafe, families start trickling in around 9am and set up umbrellas as a base camp for a day of boogie boarding, beach picnics and exploring the rockpool. The surfers are always the last to leave, forever holding on for one more wave.

7. Dune du Pilat, France

In the warmer months, Europe’s tallest sand dune, just an hour’s drive from Bordeaux , is cloaked in a constant, shimmering heat haze, giving the illusion that this sprawling French beach is scattered with gleaming treasure. The sand here, which forms peaks as high as 300 feet, is as finely milled as fresh flour, perfect for sausage-rolling your way down to the tussocky Atlantic shoreline and standing to gaze back at the pine forests behind the beach. The surrounding Arcachon Bay holds miles of beaches ripe for exploring, and you’ll find a jumble of huts nearby where fishermen set up tables to sell oysters, pâté and prawns. Book a night at Les Sources de Caudalie , an elegant country retreat.

Noosa beach Australia

8. Noosa Beach, Australia

Quite possibly the most beloved beach within easy reach of Brisbane, Noosa pairs designer boutiques and buzzing restaurants with a sprawling and serene white sand beach. The southern end of the beach typically offers up calm swimming conditions, as well as a classic surf club, while the northern end runs alongside Noosa National Park, which is home to a eucalypt forest and koalas.

9. Awaroa, South Island, New Zealand

Set deep in the heart of New Zealand’s glorious Abel Tasman National Park, Awaroa is hemmed in by clover-green native bush and seas that sparkle like freshly blown glass. Most visitors come here either by water – swooshing in on kayaks or small boats – or on foot, to ramble around the park’s lush forests. It has an important place in the hearts of the locals, who banded together to crowdfund the purchase of the privately held beachfront when it came up for sale in 2016, thus giving this pretty part of the planet the nickname the ‘People’s Beach’.

10. Die Plaat, Walker Bay Nature Reserve, South Africa

Don’t be surprised to spot the occasional southern right whale wallowing offshore at Die Plaat, a ruggedly beautiful swath of sand fringed by rocky limestone outcrops near Hermanus, South Africa’s whale capital. Chubby seals slouch on the rocky shoreline here, and you’ll find the ground littered with huge, pearlescent abalone shells. There’s history to be courted in these wind-whipped sands as well; the beach is home to Klipgat Cave, a bat-filled cavern where late Middle Stone Age people lived up to 85,000 years ago (keep your eyes peeled – you may even spot ancient tools on the ground). Stay at Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, a 6,177-acre lodge.

11. Grand Anse, Grenada

You’ll find no shortage of beautiful beaches in Grenada, but tranquil, sheltered Grand Anse is one of the best. Two miles of milky-white sand on the western, leeward side of the island , it’s a short water-taxi ride from the capital of St George’s, and is overlooked by some of Grenada’s finest hotels. You won’t want for anything here, whether it’s goblet-sized G&Ts, market stalls or seahorses that swoosh around snorkellers.

12. Keem Bay, Achill Island, Ireland

It’s a windy road to Keem Bay, but the staggering cliff-top views are worth it. This sheltered inlet, on Achill Island in County Mayo, is almost unknown to visitors, but its clear malachite waters and soft biscuit sand make it a family-friendly spot – that’s also wonderfully crowd-free. Bring binoculars for spotting basking sharks; in warmer months you’ll find herds of ice-cream vans in the car park.

13. Fakarava, French Polynesia

With its collection of easily accessible white and pink sand beaches, Fakarava – one of the largest atolls in French Polynesia – is one of the best snorkelling locations in the world, with consistently warm waters. While the sea is a safe haven for rare fish, fluorescent corals and ‘walls’ of sharks that pass close by the shore, the unblemished beaches have a claim to fame as the inspiration for Matisse’s bleu period. The artist spent three months in nearby Tahiti in 1930, and was enthralled by the lagoons’ infinite blues.

14. Marathonisi, Zakynthos, Greece

Better known as Turtle Island, the spotless white-sand islet of Marathonisi is a vital nesting spot for endangered loggerhead sea turtles, meaning visitors must stay within five metres of the water to avoid disturbing them. Fill your lungs with the pine-scented air before exploring the surrounding sea caves by snorkel or boat but be sure to bring supplies: you’ll find nothing on this Greek Island beach but seals, turtles and forests. Calm, smart design hangout Olea All Suite Hotel reflects Zakynthos's more relaxed side.

15. Praia do Sancho, Brazil

Found on Fernando de Noronha, an archipelago of volcanic islands between Brazil and Africa , Praia do Sancho is consistently voted one of the world’s best beaches. It’s also one of the hardest to access. Flights from mainland Brazil take about an hour, then you must hike, scooch down narrow rock tunnels and descend steep ladder steps to reach the golden palm-fringed sands. You have to pay an environment tax to get in, as the area is a National Park (head to the park’s offices, a 15-minute drive away), but once you’re there, its deserted shoreline, giant lumbering iguanas and fish-flecked shallows are worth the sweat.

16. Chesterman Beach, Vancouver Island, Canada

Another wild beauty, Chesterman’s wide stretch of smooth sand – dotted with huge driftwood logs and fringed by wolf-filled forest – is popular with die-hard surfers and windswept strollers when the tide recedes. It’s overlooked by the fantastic Wickaninnish Inn, an atmospheric place to shelter and keep an eye out for passing sea otters when bloated storm clouds roll in.

17. Anse Source d’Argent, Seychelles

Possibly one of the most photogenic places in the world, Anse Source d’Argent on La Digue is the original Bounty advert beach, cloaked in pure white sand and strewn with hefty granite boulders. It is not, by any stretch, deserted, but visit in the early morning] and you’ll get there before the daytrippers from Mahé and Praslin. For your own pocket of paradise, walk southwards through the shallows past the first set of boulders. The bay opens up for added breathing space.

18. Seagrass Bay, Laucala Island, Fiji

Covered in a sultry tropical jungle and accessible only via guided walking tours or horseback safaris, the private island hideaway of Laucala is an unfathomably beautiful spot, home to some of Fiji’s rarest birds, hordes of marine life and spellbinding beaches. Seagrass Bay is the quietest and prettiest, but if its real adventure you’re after, head slightly further off-shore to get up close to the magnificent sea-life in a submersible.

19. Hidden Beach, Palawan, Philippines

It’s not quite so hidden any more, but this beach still makes its mark as one of the world’s best. Palawan is filled with pristinely beautiful spots but Hidden Beach – surrounded by imposing limestone cliffs and with startlingly bone-white sand – is separated from the turquoise ocean by a small keyhole-like opening, through which visitors must climb in order to access the lagoon. Stay at El Nido hotels .

Named for the cerfs , the stags imported from Java for hunting, Ile aux Cerfs in Mauritius has become something of a victim of its own famous beauty, much of it overrun with obtrusive crowds and pesky beach touts. But you need only hike half a mile down the beach and you’ll be rewarded with some incredible island sands that you can keep all to yourself. This place is popular for a reason.

21. Tortuga Bay, Santa Cruz Island, Galápagos

With ghost-white sand, black lava rock and gaggles of marine iguanas, Tortuga Bay is an almost surreal place. It’s two miles out of the main town of Puerto Ayora, and the hike can be hot and sticky, but once there allow yourself to be distracted by sharks patrolling the shallows, apple-red crabs scuttling across the sands and the swoop of blue-footed boobies coming into land, then cool off with a spot of breaststroke among the mangroves.

22. Turquoise Bay, Exmouth, Australia

Launch yourself into the crystalline waters of Turquoise Bay and you’ll be swimming within a few feet of the pristine Ningaloo Reef, a World Heritage-listed site that’s home to the largest congregation of whale sharks on the planet. A 40-mile drive from Exmouth on Australia’s Western coast, it’s a beach of blindingly white sands and impeccable snorkelling – you’ll descend to see rainbow corals, peaceful turtles and more than 500 fish species.

23. Pink Sand Beach, Barbuda

This endlessly photogenic, often empty beach is made from crushed corals that have been ground into fine silk-like sand. Barbuda, Antigua’s sister island, is less crowded than most of the Caribbean islands , meaning you may find you have this eight-mile swathe of sand – which glows candy-floss-pink in the sun – entirely to yourself. There are no public facilities per se, but you’ll find a few beachy cafes scattered alongside the surf for a cooling cocktail.

24. Playa Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica

This popular family beach borders the wildlife-filled Manuel Antonio National Park, where three-toed sloths and white-faced capuchin monkeys emerge from the coastal rainforest to the delight of tiny beachgoers. It’s a 30-minute hike from the entrance to the park (keep your eyes peeled for howler monkeys crashing through the canopy), but once there you’ll find soft sands, excellent swimming and honey-hued sunsets. Book a room at Arenas del Mar , spread across 11 leafy acres of a nature reserve.

25. Gantheaume Point, Broome, Western Australia

With a backdrop of saffron-coloured cliffs and lapped by the warm waters of the Indian Ocean , this rugged beach is one of the southern hemisphere’s most photogenic. Cast your eye across the robin-egg-blue waters and you might spot the snouts of rare snubfin dolphins breaking the surface, then turn back to the old lighthouse tower to see ospreys nesting in the framework. When the tide is at its lowest, a smattering of 125-million-year-old dinosaur footprints are unveiled, preserved impeccably in the amber-coloured reef rock.

26. Dolfynstrand, Namibia

Set on the edge of the Namib-Naukluft National Park – the oldest desert on the planet – and a 15-minute drive from seaside hub Walvis Bay. The primeval Dolfynstrand is not a soft-waves-and-sand-between-your-toes sort of place – instead there are eerie shipwrecks strewn on the sand and a stinking, snoozing seal colony up the coast. But given its remote location in one of the world’s most sparsely populated countries, any beachcombers are unlikely to have to jostle for space.

27. Ocracoke Lifeguarded Beach, North Carolina

More of an unpolished gem than a screensaver beach, the wind-pummelled Ocracoke on the Outer Banks of North Carolina has been described as one of the USA’s wildest. Once the temporary home of Blackbeard the pirate and his fellow buccaneers, it rocks some seriously big surfing waves in the late summer, while more tranquil waters earlier in the year (plus changing facilities and ample parking) are ideal for salt-water-seeking families.

28. Rauðasandur Beach, Iceland

Glowering below the rocks of Iceland’s western fjords is the moody Rauðasandur Beach, distinguished by its copper-red sands, a result of billions of pulverised scallop shells. Reached by a winding gravel road, this is edged by formidable mountains and dramatic cliffs. But you’re unlikely to see another human here – only a tenth of Iceland’s visitors ever make it as far as the Westfjords.

29. Jibei Island beach, Taiwan

Found in Penghu County, among the remote western islands of Taiwan, Jibei is an almost untouched spot, out of reach of most city-going travellers. Getting here involves taking a boat from the North Sea Tourist Centre to the main part of the island, where there are plenty of watersports, sun umbrellas and wooden cabins for an overnight stay. But it’s the secluded, often deserted sandspit, a 15-minute walk away, that’s truly special. There are no man-made intrusions here – just the murmur of the ocean and a mile of untrodden sand.

30. Uig Sands, Isle of Lewis, Scotland

A busy day at Uig is when two people show up at once. Lying some 20 miles west of Stornoway on Lewis’s surf-battered Atlantic coast, this is a big, dramatic beach watched over by tussocky dunes and grizzled mountains. The beach itself is famous for being the place where a set of Viking chess pieces – dating back to the 12th century and made from the husks of walrus teeth – were unearthed, but it has a lot more going for it than just its history. The surrounding machair flower meadows erupt into bloom in June, and its enormous uninterrupted stretches of sand are a playground for kite-buggy enthusiasts. 31. Benguerra Island, Bazaruto Archipelago, Mozambique

Cast away in the protected Bazaruto Archipelago off the coast of southern Mozambique , Benguerra is a place where sandbars shimmer like nacre and leggy flamingoes pick their way delicately through the channels. A short sail by dhow east of the town of Vilanculos, the fine sand here is fringed by a two-mile-long coral reef, while migrating humpbacks and huge whale sharks pass majestically further offshore. The shot-silk waters are also home to the largest dugong population in the western Indian Ocean, and inland you’ll find congregations of crocodiles and all manner of bird species. But best of all, its marine reserve status means there’s only a handful of lodges on the island, so once the day-trippers depart, you’ll have the beach all to yourself. Stat at andBeyond Benguerra Island , a classy but unpretentious beach retreat.

32. Al Mughsail, Salalah, Oman

There’s something Mad Max -esque about Al Mughsail, with its unflinchingly white sand, parched frankincense trees and cinematic blow holes (especially impressive during monsoon season) which erupt every couple of minutes, shaking the earth and spewing out seawater with a deafening sound. Stretching for four unbroken miles and fringed with sheer limestone cliffs, the beach is lapped by gleaming turquoise water which can get a little choppy at times. That said, it’s a wonderful spot from which to watch fishermen pilot traditional dhows just offshore; catch them at dusk for the most dramatic photographs, when they are silhouetted against the treacly Omani sunset.

33. Playa Paraiso, Cayo Largo del Sur, Cuba

It’s likely that Playa Paraiso – stretching across a small island just off Cuba ’s southern coast – still looks much like it did in 1494, when Christopher Columbus sailed to Cayo Largo on his second expedition to the New World. Its sieved-flour sand and crystalline waters remain pristine, while the nearby reefs offer some of the finest diving in the Caribbean. Warm, calm waters make the beach ideal for paddlers and swimmers, while wildlife lovers should keep their eyes peeled for iguanas and giant sea turtles. Shade can be hard to come by though, and naturists head to the east end of the beach – so stay west if you prefer to keep things covered up.

34. Luskentyre, Outer Hebrides

At the end of a winding road on the wind-battered west coast of the Isle of Harris, you’ll find something to make your eyes pop. Luskentyre Beach is a paint splash of brilliant white, surrounded by almost impossibly azure water. On a sunny day, it’s so unerringly blue you may find it hard to believe you are at a beach in Scotland at all. But regardless of its paradoxically tropical feel, it’s at its most beautiful when eel-coloured storm clouds roll in and seas turn flinty, turning this dramatic landscape an eerie monochrome.

El Nido's Secret Lagoon Best Beach in the World

El Nido’s Secret Lagoon in Palawan has entered the top 10 of the 50 Best Beaches in the World ranking released by global travel website, Big 7 Travel.

Big 7 Travel ranked the El Nido attraction in fifth place, recommending its famed Secret Lagoon to travelers who can visit the Philippines or dream and plan about visiting.

“El Nido is a cluster of 45 islands just off the tip of Palawan, which is famous for its Secret Lagoon. Swim through a hole in the limestone rocks to enter a hidden bay with crystal clear water and soft sand,” the global travel authority wrote.

“It feels untouched, with white sandy beaches and tropical jungle,” it added.

The travel website selected the world’s most amazing beaches released in July topped by Vaeroy Beach of Norway in the 2021 edition of its annual “best of” list using aggregated scores from previous media results, official Blue Flag locations, and contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial staff.

The Philippines’ Palawan islands were previously also feted by Big 7 Travel in its world’s best bucket list places for the new decade beginning 2020. Palawan and Boracay have been also been ranked in the Top 50 Most Beautiful Places in the World by the travel guide.

El Nido in Palawan has been recommended by Huffpost travel bloggers and experts for solo travelers. Forbes also listed El Nido Resorts among the best that showcase the world-famous charms of the island.

Costa Rica’s Playa Conchal Named World’s Best Beach

Ileana Fernandez

Beautiful Conchal Beach, located in the province of Guanacaste, was ranked as the best beach in the world by Big 7 Travel in its annual publication ‘The 50 Best Beaches in the World.’

The ranking uses aggregated scores from previous media results and considers official Blue Flag locations and Big 7 Travel editorial team contributions.

According to this travel site, these are the top 10 best beaches in the world in 2022:

  • Playa Conchal – Costa Rica
  • Turquoise Bay – Exmouth, Australia
  • Grace Bay – Turks and Caicos
  • Siesta Beach – Florida, United States
  • Punta Mosquito – Holbox, Mexico
  • Secret Lagoon – El Nido, Palawan, Philippines
  • San Fruttuoso – Italy
  • Pedn Vounder – Cornwall, England
  • Boulders Beach – South Africa
  • Reynisfjara Beach – Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland

Costa Rica’s beaches are one of its most precious jewels. Undoubtedly, Playa Conchal is a little piece of heaven on the Pacific coast of Costa Rica.

“There’s no getting around it, Costa Rica is  the hottest  destination to visit right now. Not only does it offer staggering biodiversity, this eco-friendly destination boasts one of the best beaches in the world. This tiny beach is covered in crushed seashells, wrapped around a turquoise bay. Paradise,” the travel blog reads.

Conchal is a favorite destination for local and foreign tourists looking to relax and enjoy the beautiful crystal-clear waters.

For those who want to relax on the sand, the beach has delightful shadows thanks to the lush trees, perfect for reading a book, listening to music, or sitting and contemplating the beauty of the beach and nature.

In Conchal and its surroundings, there are different lodging options: from luxurious hotels, villas, and houses to more economical choices that make it possible to enjoy such a wonderful place.

Vacationers can enjoy various activities at the beach, such as snorkeling, fishing, jet ski tours, kayaking, or just swimming in the water.

This beach is a true oasis, perfect for recharging, forgetting the stresses and strains of everyday life, disconnecting from the computer and cell phone, and enjoying the magic of Costa Rica’s breathtaking nature.

Mayo beach among the 50 best beaches in the world

Keem bay on co mayo's achill island was noted for its white sand and clear water in the annual 50 best beaches in the world ranking..

Keem Bay, Achill Island, Co Mayo.

Keem Bay on Achill Island, off the coast of Co Mayo, has been named among the 50 Best Beaches in the World by travel site Big 7 Travel .

“ Keem Bay is a breathtaking rural and sheltered beach surrounded by cliffs on Ireland’s largest island – Achill Island,” Big 7 Travel says of the stunning Irish locale which landed in 48th place in the ranking.

“Its gleaming white sand rivals tropical islands and the water is superbly clear .

“The sun might not always be shining, but when it does it’s world-class. And yes, it’s beautiful even on a rainy day.”

Mayo County Council says : "Keem Bay is a sheltered rural beach surrounded by cliffs on Achill, Ireland’s largest island.

"Located at the head of a valley between the cliffs of Benmore and Croaghaun Mountain, to reach this idyllic spot just follow the Atlantic Drive to Keel and continue westward via a cliff-top road with spectacular views of the Atlantic Ocean.

"The beach, which is lifeguarded during the bathing season, is very popular with swimmers and is the site of a Blueway snorkel trail. If you’re feeling inspired there are several activity providers in the area that offer equipment hire and tuition.

"In the past, this area was a key location for the Achill Basking Shark Fishery, which operated in the 1950s and 60s. During that period, spotters were stationed at Moyteoge Head, which borders the beach, to identify the sharks and direct hunting boats to them. The sharks were targeted for oil which was used as a lubricant in the aerospace industry."

Big 7 Travel's '50 Best Beaches in the World' list is now in its fifth year. The travel site says its list is determined using aggregated scores from previous media results, official Blue Flag locations, social media popularity, and contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team.

Though Keem Bay is the only Irish beach that made this year's list, it's in great company - it's ranked right ahead of Mystic Beach on Vancouver Island, Canada, and right behind Isla Robeson in Panama.

Revealed: The beautiful Welsh beach named one of the best in the world

big seven travel best beaches

A stunning Welsh beach has been named amongst the top 50 beaches in the world.

Global travel site Big 7 Travel has released its annual list of ‘The 50 Best Beaches In The World’, and there was one standout entry from Wales – the golden sands of Rhossili Bay on the Gower.

Rhossili Bay is a permanent fixture in Wales’ Best Beach top 10 and has been voted number one on numerous occasions. It has been awarded a host of other gongs including a 2021 TripAdvisor Travellers’ Choice Award, and is rightly considered one of the most beautiful spots in the UK.

Wales has a plentiful array of stunning beaches, however Rhossili has been described as ‘The supermodel of British beaches’ by The Independent and has won accolades from UK Travel Writers and awards for being the best spot to have a picnic, one of the best surf spots in Wales, and for our four legged friends, The Times nominated Rhossili as ‘The UK’s No.1 dog-friendly beach’.

Now it’s achieved another stellar accolade being named in the top 50 beaches in the world.

big seven travel best beaches

The Big 7 Travel list is now in its 5th year, it is compiled using aggregated scores from previous media results, official Blue Flag locations, social media popularity and contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team.

It’s a diverse list, with pink sand covered in crushed seashells, crystalline lagoons and plenty of Islands. From the stunning turquoise waters of Turks and Caicos to the black sand beach in Iceland.

Rhossili Bay is described by Big 7 Travel as ‘Three miles of golden sands await you in the Gower Peninsula of Wales. It’s a bit of a hike down a steep cliff-top path to get there, but all good things require a bit of effort. It’s a popular surfing spot, or you can just relax and enjoy the beach – it’s kept pristine under the watchful eye of the National Trust.’

There’s no doubt Wales has some of the most beautiful beaches in the UK & world , have Britain’s only marine national park in Pembrokeshire, where I might add moronic Westminster built an oil refinery that was nearly ruined by fires & Sea Empress disasters, but what we do lack is the ability to promote our coastline & countryside because our tourist board message is largely swamped not only by years of suppression .of Wales & Welsh culture by Westminster & England’s “Welsh Not” agenda where anything Welsh or products made in Wales was either not acknowledged as Welsh but …  Read more »

The only UK beach named best in the world 7 hours from London that feels more like Hawaii

You don't have to trek all the way to a tropical island for a slice of paradise

  • 15:02, 1 MAY 2023

big seven travel best beaches

Set amongst the cliffs of Treryn Dinas in Cornwall lies one of the world’s best beaches. Boasting crystal clear waters, soft sand and a real taste of idyllic Cornish life, you’ll feel like you’re in Hawaii.

Big 7 Travel revealed their top picks of the globe’s best beaches that you won't want to miss. Pedn Vounder was the only UK beach to make the list, astonishingly making it all the way into eighth place. Yes, that’s in the entire world!

Ranked using previous media results, official Blue Flag locations and contributions from the Big 7 Travel team, the coveted top spot went to Costa Rica’s Playa Conchal. The top three places were made up of Turquoise Bay in Exmouth, Australia (second), and Grace Bay in the Turks and Caicos (third).

Pedn Vounder narrowly beat Boulders Beach, South Africa (ninth), and Reynisfjara Beach in Vík í Mýrdal, Iceland (tenth) to make it into the top ten. So what’s all the fuss about?

Cornwall is known for its envious coastline as thousands of Brits and tourists from abroad flock to its shores every year. Big 7 Travel said although Pedn Vounder does attract crowds it’s “still one of the UK’s most beautiful beaches”.

You’d be forgiven for thinking the cove was something out of a tropical paradise. The name Pedn Vounder translates from the Cornish 'pedn', meaning head or end and 'vounder', meaning lane - so, 'end of lane'.

big seven travel best beaches

At the beach’s east headland lies the famous Logan Rock, an 80-ton rocking stone, which was dislodged in 1824 by a group of British seamen, ultimately becoming a tourist attraction. The beach was used in a dream sequence in BBC ’s Poldark, so you might recognise the lush and former hidden gem.

One thing visitors should know is that Pedn Voundor is an unofficial naturist beach, so if you’re easily perturbed you might want to avoid the hot summer months. Dogs are also allowed on the beach all year round.

The beach currently has a 4.5 out of five star rating on Tripadvisor, from 27 reviews. Previous visitors praised its crystal clear waters, soft sand, but warned of the tricky trek to get down to the shore.

big seven travel best beaches

One person wrote: “This is a very beautiful beach, stunning weather worn cliffs form a grand backdrop to Crystal clear water. Swimming is fantastic, cold crisp, beware of the strong currents here though.”

Another said: “Anyone saying this place is anything other than divine is not telling the truth. It IS tricky to walk down to, and you do need to be very careful. Lots of nudists (July) so not for the anyone prudish. Possibly best bathing beach ....... in the world??”

A third commented: “So the beach once you manage to get down to it is just the most gorgeous, idyllic treat. Soft white sands lead you out into warm turquoise waters that lap the shore gently. It's a large cove with a number of smaller coves to both sides so naturists and clothed sun bathers can mix relatively happily. On my visit the split was probably 30% naturist.

“The cliff face is the most extraordinary jumble of weather worn, precariously balanced rocks, giving the place a feel of old world "Tolkien" country, a beautiful and inspiring area.”

If you’re seeking inspiration for a truly out-sand-ing beach break, read on.

An annual ranking of the 50 best beaches in the world reveals 2023's top strips of sand - and they are the definition of dreamy.

The guide has been created by Big 7 Travel , which generated it by analysing Blue Flag locations, the social media popularity of beaches and the thoughts of its editorial team.

The top prize goes to White Beach in The Philippines, which is heralded as a ‘pristine gem’ that boasts ‘hammocks, powdery white sand, kayaks to rent, and of course, crystal-clear water’.

Colombia’s 'tropical paradise' Cabo San Juan Beach comes second, while St Lucia’s Jalousie Beach, a 'beauty' framed by volcanic peaks, is third.

Also making the top five are Zanzibar’s Kendwa Beach and Whitehaven Beach in Australia. The top-ranking UK beach is Cornwall's Pedn Vounder (25th), which is said to serve as 'proof that Britons don’t need to hotfoot to the Caribbean for a tropical island-inspired getaway'.

Meanwhile, the top U.S beach is Tunnels Beach in Hawaii – praised as the ‘ultimate snorkelling spot’, it ranks 21st overall. Scroll down for the paradisiacal list in full, displayed in reverse order…

The Bahamas and Turks and Caicos were the only Caribbean nations to make it into the top 10.

A Big 7 statement said: “Using aggregated scores from previous media results, official Blue Flag locations and contributions from the Big 7 Travel editorial team, these are the most amazing beaches to visit this year.

“If you can’t actually visit, you can at least dream about it until you can!

The Big Major Cay beach, made famous by the world-renowned swimming pigs, rounded out the top 10.

Conde Nast Traveler announces world’s best beach list

When it comes to beaches, Australia arguably has some of the best. But now, a prestigious global ranking has given one spot Down Under the crown.

Australia really is spoiled for choice when it comes to beautiful beaches, and now one of the most prestigious annual lists has given a spot Down Under the title of the world’s best.

Every year Condé Nast Traveler ranks the beaches from around the world to curate a list of 34 locations.

Our local treasures dominated this year’s list’s upper rankings with five of the top 10 locations coming from Australia and New Zealand. And while locals might argue Byron Bay or even Bondi Beach should be at the top, the winner is in fact much further north.

With a “combination of leaning palm trees on powdery sand”, the publication crowned Palm Cove Beach as the best beach in the world, describing the slice of Queensland as “the epitome of a tropical paradise”.

Palm Cove has been rated as the best beach in the world.

Located in the state’s far north just north of Cairns, Palm Cove was praised by journalist Lizzie Pook for being relatively “crowd free” and full of wildlife including dolphins and whales off the famous jetty.

While some on social media agreed with the win, others argued much better spots could be found around Australia’s coastline.

“The only way you rank Palm Cove as the best beach in the world is if you have never been to Palm Cove or don’t like beaches,” one wrote.

“Eyre Peninsula beaches leave Palm Cove for dead,” another added.

“Best beach if you don’t ever want to go in the water. What about all the magic in WA?” one questioned.

Palm Cove crowned best in the world.

Coming in second, Honopu Beach in Kauai, Hawaii and in third spot Brekon, Shetland (found on an archipelago off Scotland).

Honopu Beach was described on the list as the ultimate hidden gem that can only be accessed by water, with the trek to get to the Hawaiian beach is well worth it.

“The only (legal) way to reach remote Honopu is by water,” Pook explained.

“Meaning you have to swim from an offshore boat, or from neighbouring Kalalau Beach, a quarter of a mile away (fins are a must).

“But given that the cayenne-coloured cliffs and smooth sands of this isolated spot provided the backdrop for Raiders of the Lost Ark and King Kong, the schlep is cinematically worth it.”

Rounding out the rest of the top 10, Byron Bay’s ever-popular Wategos Beach was praised in fourth spot, with the publication describing the “bohemian enclave” as a “sheltered beach lined with screw pine trees and offering up calm swimming conditions”.

“The beach is also home to a popular walk that leads up to the Cape Byron Lighthouse, a particularly scenic spot to be at during sunset,” Pook added.

Wategos Beach came in at number four.

Ora Beach in Indonesia took out fifth spot, and in sixth position Mona Vale Beach kicked Bondi to the kerb as the “unsung hero” of Sydney’s many beaches.

Describing Mona Vale as “perfect for walking” and “splashing in the rolling waves” all while “watching the horizon for passing pods of dolphins” — the ocean-fed lap pool is also described a highlight.

Noosa Beach came in eighth position, while our friends across the ditch got a nod for the “people’s beach” that can be found at Awaroa in New Zealand’s South Island.

“Deep in the heart of New Zealand’s glorious Abel Tasman National Park, Awaroa is hemmed in by clover-green native bush and seas that sparkle like freshly blown glass,” Pook explained.

“Most visitors come here either by water – swooshing in on kayaks or small boats – or on foot, to ramble around the park’s lush forests. It has an important place in the hearts of the locals, who banded together to crowdfund the purchase of the privately held beachfront when it came up for sale in 2016, thus giving this pretty part of the planet the nickname the ‘People’s Beach’.”

Conde Nast Traveller’s Best Beaches of the World 2024

1. Palm Cove Beach, Australia

2. Honopu Beach, Kauai, Hawaii

3. Brekon, Shetland

4. Wategos Beach, Australia

5. Ora Beach, Indonesia

6. Mona Vale Beach, Australia

7. Dune du Pilat, France

8. Noosa Beach, Australia

9. Awaroa, South Island, New Zealand

10. Die Plaat, South Africa

Forget the golden sands of the Sunshine Coast or the wine trails that call Adelaide home, because Aussies have tipped this as the best city Down Under.

Bondi is no longer recognised as having bragging rights to Australia’s most popular beach, with a new hotspot taking the title.

It’s one of the most highly-anticipated theme parks of all time with 50 attractions, set across five themed lands. Here’s a first look inside it.

It's that time of year when our bodies and minds begin screaming for a vacation, unleashing a deep desire to defrost from the winter chill and all the burdens that come with it. While we'd argue there's never a bad time of the year to book that plane ticket—spring 2024 is looking like an especially good one.

That's because airfares are becoming much more affordable compared to last year; average airfares for March are down 3% compared to 2023, and April airline tickets are 8% cheaper than last year, according to data from travel search site Kayak .

While airfares are down across the board, some destinations offer a better deal than others. So, we asked travel search and booking sites for their latest intel on destinations where airfares are dropping for March and April. Whether you’re craving a beach getaway or you’re in need of a city visit to soak up art and culture, there’s an affordable spring destination for you.

Here are seven destinations—both international and domestic—you can visit this spring without blowing your travel budget, according to the latest data. From US and Canadian urban hubs to coastal getaways in Mexico , the Caribbean, and Central America , the results might surprise you.

Nashville, Tennessee

For a budget-friendly getaway this spring, consider heading to Nashville: Average airfare to the bustling country music haven is just $277 round-trip in March, according to Kayak's data. Aside from Honky Tonk Row, the famous lineup of live music joints and dance halls along Broadway, there’s plenty else to explore in Music City. Pop into the National Museum of African American Music or the Jefferson Street Sound Museum to learn about the history of the city’s Black music scene, then take a guided tour of RCA Studio B —where icons like Elvis recorded their albums—and the Country Music Hall of Fame.

Where to stay: Check out our guides to the best hotels and Airbnbs in Nashville, from lively modern stays to historic boutique hotels like The Russell Nashville .

Take advantage of cheap airfare to Central America and enjoy a coastal getaway to Belize City.

Belize City, Belize

Airfares to Central America are down 11% from this time last year and down 6% from 2019, according to data from travel booking site Hopper , meaning the region is an ideal destination for a tropical vacation that won’t break the bank. Take advantage of the price drops by booking a flight to Belize City, where airfares are averaging $546 from the US, data from Priceline says. With your savings, continue onto a puddle-jumper flight to Placencia and book a suite at one of the luxe beachfront resorts on the peninsula.

Where to stay: Out of our readers' favorite hotels in Central America , 9 out of 20 are located in Belize, including Placencia's Sirenian Bay Resort & Villas .

Montréal, Canada

Looking to visit a city with a thriving culinary scene and plenty of art and culture? Book a visit to Montréal , where airfares for March are averaging only $361 roundtrip, Kayak says. Although March is still quite chilly in Québec’s largest city, the crowds will be much thinner compared to the warmer summer months. There are plenty of museums to tour, like the show-stopping Museum of Fine Arts, and quaint cafés to warm up in. Cozy winter attractions, like the iconic skating rink in the Esplanade Tranquille, are still on offer in March, and the month is prime sugar-shack season , when maple syrup is harvested and all things maple-flavored are featured on restaurant menus.

Where to stay: Check out our guide to the best hotels in Montréal , including creative haven Hotel Uville and the historic Le Saint-Sulpice Hôtel .

Guadalajara is home to a thriving design scene and walkable, picturesque streets lined with art galleries.

Guadalajara, Mexico

If you need a warm and sunny getaway, consider booking a flight to Guadalajara in the Mexican state of Jalisco. In March, the average temperature reaches a high of 85 degrees with practically no chance of rain—and the average airfare for March is cheap, currently clocking in at $336 roundtrip, according to Kayak. In Guadalajara, you can soak up the city’s thriving design scene with a walk through Calle Independencia, a picturesque, cobblestoned street lined with galleries and open to pedestrians only. The city also offers one of the best food scenes in Mexico : It’s the hometown of birria , slowly stewed tacos served with flavorful consommé. Jalisco is also the birthplace of tequila, so be sure to take a tasting tour through the area.

Where to stay: Check out our readers' 10 favorite hotels in Mexico . In Guadalajara, stay at the quirky Casa Fayette , located in its up-and-coming Lafayette arts district.

Tampa, Florida

Turquoise waters and white sand beaches are more accessible than ever, thanks to low airfares to Tampa, Florida . The average airfare to the city along the Gulf Coast is averaging $288 this spring, according to Priceline, and Kayak shows that 2024 prices are about 19% lower than last year’s. Spring is the perfect time to pay a visit to the city’s Manatee Viewing Center, when the docile sea cows migrate to the refuge’s warmer waters.

St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands has some of the best beaches in the Caribbean—no passport required.

St. Thomas, US Virgin Islands

Caribbean islands are also within reach for budget-conscious travelers this spring, with airfares down 9% from this time last year, Hopper’s report says. St. Thomas in the US Virgin Islands has hotel rates of $300 on average per night and flights as low as $184 round-trip on Hopper. Plus, no passport is required for US citizens. Stay on St. Thomas to enjoy some of the best beaches in the Caribbean and world-class snorkeling, or hop around to the other US Virgin Islands, St. John and St. Croix.

Where to stay: With the money you save on airfare, consider splurging on a stay at The Ritz Carlton for true island opulence.

Vancouver, Canada

If you can’t decide between an outdoor-focused getaway and a city-based vacation, Vancouver could be your perfect destination. The bustling city is nestled in natural splendor—plus, the average airfare for April is just $331 round-trip. It’s an ideal time to visit, as April is the start of whale watching season , when orcas, humpbacks, and gray whales begin returning to the waters just off the city’s coastline. To truly immerse yourself in nature, take a meandering hike through the dense and biodiverse Pacific Spirit Regional Park . It’s known for its towering evergreen trees, but in April, deciduous varieties like bitter cherry trees will be in bloom.

Where to stay: Check out our guide to the 15 best hotels in Vancouver , including Skwachàys Lodge , Canada’s first aboriginal boutique arts hotel.

But grown-ups aren’t left out of the fun. Tequila tastings, spa treatments and romantic dinners can be on your agenda thanks to the supervised club for kids ages 4 to 12. Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, Dominican Republic

Movies under the stars, trapeze lessons, windsurfing — with cool activities like these, kids will never want to leave this newish resort in the lush, away-from-it-all part of the island. Supervised clubs for babies through teens keep the good times rolling while you’re at the adults-only Zen pool or doing treetop yoga. (Yes, that’s a thing.) Solar panels, recycling, plastic-free water bottles and other sustainable initiatives are part of the eco-minded resort culture.

Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, Negril, Jamaica

a sparsely attended white sand beach at beaches negril, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

While this all-inclusive resort and 2024 Family Travel Award-winner caters to all ages, toddlers and preschoolers will be star-struck. Sesame Street characters entertain them with story times, dance parties and even puppet-making! That’s on top of the mini water slides, splash areas and a playground that makes little ones squeal with glee and wears them out, so they’ll hit the sack early.

Private childcare and supervised kids’ clubs (for babies through teens, including those with special needs) are an option when you want a spa treatment, a quiet dinner or just to read a book on the resort's idyllic 7-Mile Beach. All the rooms and suites got a glow-up in 2020, plus there are new villas with butler service (sign us up!)

Fairmont Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

When it comes to baby and kid gear, this luxury resort has you covered. Need a bottle warmer? They got it. How about a step stool for a toddler to reach the sink? Yours for the asking. With these worries aside, you can concentrate on the beauty of the surroundings (the resort is surrounded by a lush mangrove forest) and incredible bucket-list activities, like kids’ carnivals and night kayaking. All the rooms have received a glow-up and there's a sleek new beach club to boot.

Rock House Resort, Turks & Caicos

the infinity pool at the rock house resort, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Your family may never leave the water at this Mediterranean-inspired oasis , which opened in May 2022. In addition to a full kitchen and roomy living room, many of the villa-style accommodations feature a spacious private pool. (Yes way!) And if your crew ever tires of it, fun awaits at the resort’s oceanfront infinity pool and stretch of white sand beach, which is exclusively for resort guests. Just note that while a cliffside setting makes the resort incredibly picturesque, it’s impossible to navigate with a stroller — so bring the tweens, teens and even grandparents if they don’t have trouble climbing stairs.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Aruba Resort

A brand that's popular with families because it offers separate sleeping spaces for kids and adults, Embassy Suites recently opened a location in Aruba. (Pinch us now.) New England Cozy

Lakes, lighthouses and hiking trails make New England a great place to visit in almost any season.

Quisisana Resort, Lovell, ME

two friends frolic in a lake at the quisisana resort, a good housekeeping pick for family vacation destinations

Kids will get a digital detox at this all-inclusive lakefront resort , but they’ll be too busy playing to miss their devices. Without TV or a Wi-Fi signal in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and cabins, they’ll be fully immersed in the slew of included activities — from paddle boating to tennis to sandcastle-building. They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.

At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.

The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.

Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport, ME

Open from May to October, this nature-focused retreat provides a refuge from city life. Yoga sessions in the garden, a shed filled with arts and crafts supplies for kids, guided nature walks and outdoor art classes are easy-going yet exciting at the same time. Cottages with fireplaces foster togetherness, and complimentary breakfast arrives at your door every morning so there's no need to rush out for coffee.

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT

Nestled in the Green Mountains, this resort is just as fun in the summer months as it is during prime ski season. Besides eight heated pools (some with waterslides!), the action-packed lineup of family activities has plenty to do whether you’re traveling with a toddler, teen or both. Sing-a-longs, magic shows and scavenger hunts keep little ones entertained while older kids will welcome the chance to take a guided hike, design and launch a water rocket or play glow-in-the-dark volleyball. A GH 2024 Family Travel Awards winner, condos at this property accommodate up to five bedrooms, making it possible for extended family and friends to stay together.

Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club, Brewster, MA

Beach, pool, eat, repeat — that’s how your crew will spend laid-back days at this Cape Cod gem . The private beach has gentle surf and at low tide, kids can spy little sea creatures in the tide pools. When the tide changes, head to the heated outdoor or indoor pools. Outdoor movies are the perfect wind-down to bedtime. And if you can pry the kids out of the water, activities like scavenger hunts, curated by the resort’s new director of fun (for real!) await. Just make sure to stay in the “mansion” section of the resort because that’s the part with private beach access.

Sebasco Harbor Resort, Phippsburg, ME

the kids' club at the sebasco harbor resort, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

Kids will never forget sleeping in a lighthouse next to the ocean. The resort’s 1945 lighthouse contains recently renovated guest rooms with amazing views, sea breezes and conveniences like a fridge and microwave. The lighthouse rooms are also near the resort’s iconic oceanfront saltwater pool, which recently got a makeover. A vintage bowling alley, weekly pirate cruise and old-school kids’ club add to the New England charm.

Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge, Stowe, VT

The scenic trails of Cady Hill Forest are just steps away and downtown Stowe is about a 10-minute walk. Two- and three-bedroom cottages at Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge have plenty of space for families and a kitchen to boot. A game room, fire pits for s'mores roasting and a pool make hanging at the lodge a nice respite in between nature activities.

Los Angeles, CA

Tweens and teens won’t roll their eyes if you suggest a vacay in L.A. — where, trust us, they’ll ask you to eat at In-N-Out-Burger (look cool and say you already had it on the list). Some more must-dos: Visit the Griffith Observatory for the out-of-this-world exhibits and a stellar view of the Hollywood sign, and if you're an outdoorsy family you can hike down from the observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and famous TCL Chinese Theaters .

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Some outdoor shopping at The Grove L.A. and a beach day in Santa Monica with a spin on the iconic wheel at the Santa Monica Pier will get you more well-deserved parent cred. Or, you can take a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood , where, for now, you can find the only Super Nintendo World open in the United States. Stay at The Garland in North Hollywood, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Awards winner. It has a swanky trolley that transports guests to and from Universal, as well as other kid perks like dive-in movies and a retro-chic family suite with bunk beds.

San Diego, CA

Can’t decide between heading to the beach or exploring a big city? San Diego has the best of both worlds, with near-perfect weather to boot. Make your home base a beach resort like the Kona Kai San Diego Resort & Spa , San Diego Mission Bay Resort or, if you're bringing a big group, Shore House at Del, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner. Intersperse oceanside fun with short drives to the city’s famous zoo and museums in Balboa Park. Plan to spend at least a half day at Liberty Station , a cultural attraction that has many places to eat and shop. New stores and restaurants are open at Seaport Village , which has a classic carousel for kids to ride.

Monterey, CA

The number one reason to book a vacation in this coastal town: the aquarium. Yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is that good. It levels up the typical touch tank experience by letting little kids crawl through tunnels surrounded by tropical fish displays and use squirt toys to learn how animals stand up to big waves. There’s even a padded zone with eye-level exhibits for toddlers! And the whole family will be wowed by the aquarium’s newish exhibition, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean." Some of the creatures in the 21 live exhibit areas are newly discovered and haven’t even been named yet. Mind blown! Stay at the hotel next door, InterContinental The Clement Monterey .

Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA

the ferris wheel at disneyland california adventure disneyland is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
