Destination must-sees.

Greenland Must See 1

Known as the “Iceberg Capital,” the town of Ilulissat translates to the Greenlandic word for “iceberg.” Nearby is the Ilulissat Icefjord, containing icebergs produced by the Sermeq Kujalleq Glacier. This single Icefjord produces the most icebergs outside of Antarctica, but only a total of 10% of Greenland’s icebergs are created here. This Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2004.

Greenland Must See 2

Disko Bay is located on the west coast of Greenland and is within the Arctic Circle. Surrounded by a breathtaking natural landscape, take in towering basalt mountains and patches of greenery on the sloping hills. Admire the frosty glaciers scattered throughout the water and dock in Qeqertarsuaq, known as “The Big Island.” Disko Bay is also home to the famous Eqip Sermia Glacier.

Greenland Must See 3

Kangerlussuaq

Glide along the icy waters of the Kangerlussuaq Fjord and take in the snowcapped mountains jutting up out of the tundra. Admire the breathtaking blend of natural beauty through a mix of grassy flatlands and glacial peaks. Over 100 miles long, this massive waterway is one of the main crossroads of Greenland. In Greenlandic, the fjord’s name actually translates to “big fjord.”

Greenland Must See 4

Home to around 100 people, Itilleq is a remote settlement that pays tribute to its Inuit ancestors. Residents make their living hunting, fishing, and trapping. Take in the picturesque village on foot to get a firsthand feel of what life would be like with only the basic necessities. The town strives to preserve their unique heritage and cultural traditions.

Destination Must-Dos

Greenland Must Do 1

Witness the calving of Eqip Sermia Glacier

Stretching over three miles wide, the Eqip Sermia Glacier is one of the most active glaciers in Greenland. Watch as blankets of melting ice slide off the glacier and thunder into the frigid water below. Listen to the booming crash when the air pressure is released, echoing monstrously into the still air. Get close to the glacier to safely take in the shades of white and blue.

Greenland Must Do 2

Enjoy a kaffemik

Feel like a local when you participate in a kaffemik, a traditional celebratory gathering that features coffee, dessert, dancing, and music. In Greenlandic, the name kaffemik translates to "via coffee." Get an inside look at the local community and allow the welcoming lifestyle to embrace you. Warm up with a comforting cup of coffee and join in on the cozy celebration.

Greenland Must Do 3

Tour Sisimiut

In the town of Sisimiut, wooden homes dot the hillsides, a rainbow of vibrant colors that contrast with the surrounding white snow. This area has been inhabited for over 4,500 years and features a quaint blend of historical and modern life. Sisimiut is home to around 5,400 citizens, making it the second-largest city in Greenland. Tour the historic Colonial Quarter, Sisimiut Museum, and the iconic Blue Church.

Greenland Must Do 4

From valleys to hills, Greenland offers some of the best hiking trails in the Arctic Circle. Admire icy waterways and picturesque mountains as you venture along the road less traveled. Strap on your best pair of hiking boots and start climbing – the views will undoubtedly be worth it.

Greenland expert 2

Be prepared to wake up early most days to watch the sun rise over the glaciers and fjords. Due to Greenland’s northern location, daylight appears to last longer in this area so you can make the most of your day.

Greenland Expert 3

Whale watching is a must when in Greenland. From humpback to minke, many different types of whales call Greenland their home. Keep an eye out for these large mammals when they are surfacing.

What people love about 10 day greenland tours.

it was absolutely amazing!!! Trip of a lifetime
This is an amazing tour, exploring the world largest island. I am the oldest in the group of young dudes from different parts of the globe. Being an old bloke in the group it’s not easy. Traversing and maneuvering the parched land of Greenland and trekking the icecap…whoa! that’s incredible to feat. Our tour expert Eva is amazing, she walks and talks with full of energy. She knows the area well enough that she could explain with gusto. If you’re looking for comfort tour, this is not for you. Transportation…majority by foot and speed boat. The group of ten bonded together. We’d amazing swaddled moments together. Sleeping in a tent in the middle of nowhere, very very cold, making pee in the middle of the night walking few hundred feet groping in the dark if no flashlight…that was fun, good luck if you trip. Eating our lunch anyplace, anywhere but place good enough to rest and eat. The only issue I’d was buying a few minutes of WiFi to use that didn’t work, waste of money. I want to write more but it’ll be a book….Anyway, thanks to the Tasermiut Tour team but Eva takes the lion’s share.

More about greenland vacation packages.

Are you interested in a Greenland vacation package? Whether you are off for an active vacation, a family trip, or an all-inclusive holiday, these vacation packages ensure you will get a well-planned, affordable, and adventurous vacation in Greenland that you will never forget.

Below, you can find answers to questions which is related to our vacation packages in Greenland.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a greenland vacation package cost.

The prices vary a lot in terms of your activities and destinations. Take into account that the cheapest tours may only include flights and accommodation and a few experiences, so when you add more day trips, the cost is more or less the same as buying a more expensive package tour from the start. You can filter in the price above to the right. In this way, you can easily find a vacation package in Greenland that match your budget.

If I am not able to travel, can I then cancel my vacation package?

You can read more in our Terms and Conditions page: https://guidetogreenland.com/terms-conditions/

Why buy a package tour instead of a bundle of day tours?

If you buy a package tour to Greenland, everything is planned and taken care of, so it is much easier and more convenient for you.

Can I plan a tour myself?

You can buy your flights, accommodation and day trips yourself, but make sure that all dates fit and that there is space on the trips. It is a pity to have reached Disco Bay, and then not be able to go out to e.g. a whale watching tour or iceberg tour!

How far in advance should I book my Greenland vacation package?

We advise you to book your vacation package at least 3 months in advance. The best would be booking your holidays 6 months or more in advance as availability in Greenland is really limited and change quickly. Furthermore, when you book some months in advance, you have a lot of time to prepare for your big Arctic adventure!

For how long do I have to wait on answers on the packages on request?

We will do our best to answer you as fast as possible.

Does any vacation packages start from Iceland?

Yes, we have vacation packages in Greenland with a starting point from Reykjavik, Iceland.

What should I know before booking a Greenland vacation package?

All vacation packages in Greenland start either from Copenhagen, Denmark, or Reykjavik, Iceland. During summer, a few start from Billund in Denmark. You should be aware of which activities your vacation package includes since some of them can vary in difficulty. Moreover, Greenland quickly sells out in the high season, and the overall supply is less than the demand during the high season.

What airlines are flying to Greenland?

Air Greenland and Icelandair.

What is the difference between a vacation package and a multi-days tour?

A vacation package in Greenland includes flights whereas multi-days tours does not.

Is Greenland a good vacation spot for long tours?

If you ask us, Greenland is the best vacation spot for long tours! Greenland is a remote and mindful destination with untouched mountains and fjords. Once you are here, most people want to stay longer and enjoy nature and the unique quietness. Moreover, there are so many amazing places in Greenland from West to East and North to South. With a long tour, you have the opportunity to visit more than one place.

What does a vacation package in Greenland include?

It includes flights, accommodation, sometimes meals, guides, and activities. You can find all information on what is included in each package in the tab ‘included’.

What should I pack before traveling to Greenland on a vacation package?

It really depends on where you are going, what you are going to do, and what seasons - and of course for how long. What will the modes of transport be for the big portions of my Greenland tour?

Since Greenland does not really have any roads, the majority of transport will be by airplane and ferry. However, sometimes even a helicopter, a dog sled, or a snowmobile all depending on your vacation package!

What size would the group be if my tour to Greenland is fully booked?

The size of groups varies from each package - normally between 6 to 12 people. But a vacation package is not necessarily the same as a group tour. You can purchase a package where you and your spouse are the only ones attending.

Are there travel packages in all of East, West, North, and South Greenland?

Yes, we have vacation packages all over Greenland. From South to North and from East to West. You can filter by ‘destination’.

Are there vacation packages only for outdoor experiences?

Yes, we also offer outdoor packages for the extremes. You can book hiking, kayaking, biking, and ice hiking vacation packages in Greenland.

Are there vacation packages in Greenland in all seasons?

You can go all year round to Greenland. You can find the perfect vacation package in your preferred time of year by filtering in 'Available months'.

Do vacation packages include insurance?

No, you should purchase insurance separately - and be sure it covers Greenland!

Is it necessary to have insurance while traveling in Greenland?

It is required for some of the package tours. But we will always advise you to have insurance while traveling in Greenland.

Do you do tailor-made vacation packages?

No. However, if you are a group of 6 and more please contact us by email. We might be able to help you!

Is my vacation package booking confirmed after payment?

No, you will need to wait until it is confirmed by one of the Guide to Greenland experts.

Do you need to book connecting flights to Greenland by yourself?

Yes, you need to book flights from your home country as you need to get to Copenhagen or Reykjavik. We advise you to have your connection flight at least one day before and one day after your Greenland tour.

How long is the flight to Greenland?

It depends on where in Greenland you are flying. Usually, the flight from Denmark is approximately 4 to 4,5 hours. From Iceland to Greenland it could be from 2 hours (if you fly to East Greenland) to 3 hours.

When do I need to be at the airport before my Greenland flight?

We advise you to be in the airport at least 2-3 hours before.

When will I receive the tickets and the final itinerary for my trip?

At the latest 2 weeks before the trip.

Do I need to pay for my vacation package at once or I can separate payments?

Due to the limited supply and huge demands, we need to have all payments at once.

Can extra charges appear after booking a package tour?

Yes, but not very often. There could be an extra charge if flight prices change due to energy prices rising or similar. If standard rooms are occupied and the only option is to stay in an upgraded room, we may also charge more. We will inform you about that right away.

Can my itinerary be changed after the booking?

Yes, your itinerary can change. You will still go on all included tours but the days of the tours can change due to availability and weather conditions can also adjust your final itinerary.

Flying to Greenland is set to become easier for US travelers

Flying to Greenland is set to become easier for US passengers thanks to a new flight route that should significantly reduce the journey time.

Greenland, the world's largest island, has many draws for visitors: dramatic scenery, northern lights, Viking settlements, polar bears, festivals, and whale watching. The downside: getting there isn't easy, especially for US passengers. The only direct flights are through Iceland and Denmark and passengers typically have to plan for long transfers and a layover.

That process could improve in summer when Icelandair operates a new route to the Arctic island from Iceland that should make the trip shorter and easier to manage for people coming from the US and Canada.

Arch iceberg in Greenland

Typically passengers coming from North America arrive in Iceland's Keflavik International Airport and then have to make the journey by car to Reykjavik City Airport to catch a flight to Greenland, usually factoring in a three- or four-hour transfer or an overnight layover.

Starting June 1,  Icelandair will move two of the Greenland flights from Reykjavik City Airport to Keflavik International Airport, flying to Nuuk (Greenland's capital and largest city) and Ilulissat (home to the Disko Bay icebergs and a UNESCO World Heritage site).

This means that when passengers from North America arrive in Iceland, they can depart to these destinations in Greenland from the same airport they've landed in without having to traipse across the country to get to Reykjavik airport for a connecting flight.

What's more, Icelandair has timed departures to and from Greenland in Iceland so they complement the US and Canada flight schedules.

"The Greenland schedule from Keflavik is ideal for US connections," Michael Raucheisen from Icelandair tells Lonely Planet. "The flights to Greenland depart early morning after arrivals from the US and Canada, and on the return leg they'll arrive back in Keflavik before departures to the US and Canada."

Next year, the process will be simplified even further when Greenland finishes renovations on airports in Nuuk and Ilulissat to accommodate direct international flights from Europe and North America.

While improved connectivity will no doubt help boost the economy, there are concerns about the impact the growth of tourism could have on Greenland's traditional ways of life and the environment as the country moves to accommodate more arrivals by air. The impact of climate change is visible almost everywhere in Greenland with the ice melting faster now than any time in the past 12,000 years .

Speaking at a conference hosted by travel industry news site Skift in March,  Visit Greenland  CEO, Hjörtur Smárason, said "climate change is the big story, and then you need to fly [to Greenland]. It creates this contradiction."

While getting there isn't exactly sustainable, Smárason said Greenland is rethinking tourism on the ground with minimal climate impact by investing in local experiences, food and unique attractions like dog-sledding. Greenland is also gradually developing infrastructure that can accommodate the local population and growth in visitor numbers without overwhelming the country.

Getting to Greenland by air

Air Greenland and Icelandair are the only two airlines operating international flights to Greenland. Due to the huge distances, travelers have to fly directly to the city they wish to visit as there are no roads or trains between towns in Greenland. Visitors who want to visit multiple destinations within Greenland can fly domestically with Air Greenland, or book a trip on one of the west coast's inter-city passenger ships in summer.

During summer there are daily flights to Kulusuk , Ilulissat, Nuuk, and Narsarsuaq from Iceland with Icelandair. Flights to Nuuk and Ilulissat will depart from Iceland's international airport starting in June, while flights to Narsarsuaq and Kulusuk will depart from Reykjavik domestic airport. During winter, Icelandair primarily serves Kulusuk, and Nuuk. From Denmark (the most popular option with three-quarters of Greenland passengers transiting through Copenhagen ), there are flights to Nuuk, Ilulissat, Maniitsoq, and Sisimiut with Air Greenland. Typically 10 flights run weekly from Copenhagen.

The airport in Kangerlussuaq is undergoing renovations as officials work to determine how it will operate in future and if it will primarily serve domestic or international passengers. Flights from Denmark mainly go through Kangerlussuaq and take domestic flights to other destinations such as Sisimiut and Maniitsoq.

How to experience the ultimate adventure in South Greenland

From kayaking across vast, petrol-blue fjords to tasting locally foraged delicacies, these seven South Greenland adventures reveal a country ripe for adventure.

tours to greenland from us

Nature pulls out all the stops in South Greenland. Glaciers crash into fjords where whales often feed, icebergs tower like the ruins of fairytale castles and remote sheep farms nod to a rich Norse and Inuit history. On the fringes of the second-largest body of ice in the world, the Greenland ice sheet, this fjord-woven region will blow you away with raw beauty, heritage and season-led cuisine using ingredients from land and sea.

Cruise ships only give you a taste of what’s out there. To properly venture into the wilds and get a feel for the Arctic, fly in and stay a while. You need time, peace and space to find your own adventure — whether hiking, kayaking, exploring Norse ruins or bathing in hot springs. With luck, you’ll have the Northern Lights for company already in late summer and early autumn.

1. Taste Greenlandic flavours

Using Arctic ingredients, incorporating Inuit heritage with agricultural tradition and adding a pinch of creativity, South Greenland is a rising star in new-Nordic cooking, bringing hyperlocal ingredients to the plate. Whether you’re digging into a leg of lamb, newly cultivated grass-fed beef or locally grown root vegetables, this is food with heart. For an immersive experience, join locals for a private dinner — one of the best is ByNanna, where Nanna Høegh and her husband talk art and Viking ruins over a multi-course feast in their beautiful home in Qaqortoq. At fjordside Tasermiut Camp , help the chef forage for herbs and flowers to pep up dinner, where storytelling and — if you’re lucky — a Northern Lights show join, too.

2. Immerse yourself in Inuit history at Kujataa

For millennia, humans have eked out a living on the edge of the ice cap. The UNESCO World Heritage Site of Kujataa   brings to light a rich thousand-year-old subarctic farming culture, taking you back to the Norse farmer-hunters of the 10th century, who reared cattle, sheep and goats; and to the Inuit farming, fishing and seal-hunting communities that sprung up here in the 18th century. With the ruins of farms and churches spread across the World Heritage Site, often right next to present-day working farms, Kujataa offers a fascinating window into the hard work, resilience and pioneering spirit of the Indigenous people, and those that came to settle on their land.

3. Boat along the Tasermiut Fjord

Home to one of South Greenland’s most photographed glaciers, Tasermiut Fjord , with its lush forest and sheer walls of granite, is jaw-droppingly beautiful. This 44-mile-long fjord is a taste of the Arctic proper. To get a true sense of scale, and for closer encounters with the nature and wildlife, nothing beats exploring Tasermiut Fjord by boat. With stops along the way including the only settlement in the entire fjord or a sheep farm, you can get a feel for life in the fjord. Continue onward to the great lake, the forest and then the innermost reaches of the fjord, which is often called the Patagonia of the Arctic.

4. Unwind at a sheep farm

If you want to give civilisation the slip and tune into the quiet beauty of South Greenland’s fjords, fields and mountains, stay on one of eight sheep farms that offer guest accommodation. Norse settlers first grazed sheep in these lush pastures 1,000 years ago, a tradition revived 100 years ago by an Inuit couple in Qassiarsuk. Affording an insight into traditional Arctic life, the farms are ideal for embracing the outdoors, whether on foot or by horseback. Favourite escapes include Pioti Igaliku , with a summer lake cottage where you can peer up at gliding sea eagles; Sermilik Hostel , where sheep paths lead to the Greenland ice sheet; and idyllically rustic Kangerluarsorujuk Cabin , where your host family will prepare delicacies like smoked lamb leg and marinated salmon. Just be sure to follow the cardinal rules of traversing farm country — leave gates as they are found (open or closed); walk on roads whenever possible; do not give working dogs attention; and never walk on the green grass fields.

5. Bathe al fresco at Uunartoq Hot Springs

You’ll find hot springs bubbling up all over the Arctic, but there’s something special about Uunartoq’s. This uninhabited island, a breezy boat ride away from Qaqortoq, Nanortalik or Alluitsup Paa, is a vivid green speck of land, ringed by mountains and petrol-blue waters glinting with icebergs. Here, you can ditch your clothes and slip into your bathers to wallow in the 38C natural pool. Enjoyed by Norsemen and Inuit alike for many centuries and heated by geothermal subsoil, these are the most accessible hot springs in Greenland warm enough to bathe in.

6. Embrace adventure in Nanortalik

Where fjord meets sea, the town of Nanortalik — meaning the place with polar bears — is beautiful, with a sprinkling of brightly painted timber cottages amidst a rocky landscape with direct views of the mountains. After roaming the old town and open-air museum that delves into Greenlandic history and heritage, you’ll be itching to head out into the wilds. This is South Greenland’s adventure hub, where you can trek into the mountains with a backpack, scale near-vertical cliffs (the 2,010-metre peak of Ulamertorsuaq, also known as Ketil, is the ultimate challenge) or get a guide who’ll take you kayaking, sailing or fishing for trout, salmon and cod. Staying at the locally-owned and operated Tasermiut Camp or NTS Cabins is highly recommended to fully connect with the backcountry.

7. Press the pause button in Igaliku

It’s oh so quiet in Igaliku, an isolated Inuit settlement of just over 30 people sitting on on a thin 2.5-mile wide isthmus, tucked between two fjords. Green and gold pastures north of the town slope down to iceberg-filled waters, Qooqqut Glacier shimmers in the distance at the top of Illerfissalik mountain and, in summer, the fields erupt with wildflowers. But Igaliku is more just a pretty face — this is one of the central grounds for Greenland’s 12th-century Norse culture, home to the well-preserved ruins of Gardar, seat of the Norse bishop. Getting there is part of the magic: arriving via Tunulliarfik Fjord includes a 2.5-mile traverse along the King’s Road from Itilleq, open for walking, driving or UTV-ing.

How to Get to and Around Greenland by Plane and Boat

Getting to Greenland by Plane

Getting to greenland by boat, travel within greenland.

  • Frequently Asked Questions

Located between the Atlantic and Arctic oceans and geographically considered part of North America, Greenland is the world's largest island. It's an autonomous region that is technically part of the Kingdom of Denmark. The country is not that far from the U.S. and Canada — at one point, only 10 miles of open ocean separate remote northern Greenland from equally remote Ellesmere Island, Canada. But for travelers anxious to explore Greenland, there are only a couple of ways to get there, and very few of them go through North America.

For commercial travel, Greenland is accessible only by plane or cruise ship, and only from a few places. There are practical reasons for these limits, and there's also a concerted effort by the government of Greenland to keep travel at a sustainable level— hence the limited options for getting there. Read on for a guide on how to get to Greenland and how to get around this large island.

Despite Greenland's growing popularity with U.S. travelers, the island can only be reached by plane from two destinations in Europe: Copenhagen , Denmark and Reykjavik, Iceland. For travelers from the US or Canada, that means you must first travel to one of those two departure cities. There are more frequent options from Reykjavik. As Greenland's tourism infrastructure continues to evolve, more flight routes may appear but for the time being, Copenhagen and Reykjavik are the only options.

Flights From Reykjavik

IcelandAir offers direct flights from Reykjavik City Airport (RKV) to:

  • Nuuk Airport (GOH): The capital and largest city of Greenland and home to a third of its population, Nuuk is a common stepping-off point for tours of Greenland. Nuuk is in southwest Greenland, where most of the country's settlements are located.

Connecting flights from Nuuk are offered to:

  • Ilulissat Airport (JAV): With a population of around 5,000 and a position as one of Greenland's northernmost permanent settlements, Ilulissat's biggest industry is tourism. Incoming travelers head out on glacier tours, dogsled rides, and other adventures in the frozen tundra.
  • Narsarsuaq Airport (UAK): Southern Greenland's only international airport serves tiny Narsarsuaq, which has fewer than 150 inhabitants. But it's a hub for eco-tourism, with wildlife tours, glacier treks, and excursions to the nearby Greenland Ice Sheet.
  • Kulusuk Airport (KUS): Set on an island in eastern Greenland, the airport serves Kulusuk, another small settlement that's largely tourism-dependent. Visitors come here for a taste of Greenland's native culture, as well as mountaineering and wildlife-watching excursions.

Air Greenland also flies from Reykjavik City Airport and larger Reykjavik-Keflavik (KEF) . There are direct flights to Nuuk, and connecting flights to the airports listed, above, except for Kulusuk. Additionally, Air Greenland has direct flights from Reykjavik to the following commercial airports in Greenland:

  • Kangerlussuaq Airport (SFJ): The largest airport in Greenland, Kangerlussuaq is the site of a former U.S. Naval base. Today, it's the main air transportation hub in Greenland, as well as a portal for wildlife and adventure tours.
  • Sisimiut Airport (JHS): This airport serves Greenland's second-largest town, Sisimiut, which is a hub for the fishing industry, as well as a port for international cargo. Sisimiut is increasingly dependent on tourism, and heli-skiing and heli-hiking tours depart from the airport.

Flights From Copenhagen

Air Greenland is the only airline that flies from Copenhagen to Greenland. It offers non-stop flights to Nuuk, Narsarsuaq, Kangerlussuaq, and Sisimiut, and connecting flights to the airports shown above, except for Kulusuk.

There are no passenger ferries to Greenland from any other country. That said, many travelers do arrive to Greenland by boat on commercial cruise liners that originate in Canada, the U.S., Iceland, Norway, and other northern European destinations. Most of these cruise itineraries are of the long and expensive variety and many are with expedition cruise lines that are typically more costly than traditional "big ship" lines.

Some itineraries only cruise the coast of Greenland without actually going ashore. These are usually expedition ships that take passengers on excursions in Zodiac vessels to watch wildlife and get close to icebergs and glaciers.

Other itineraries stop at different ports in Greenland and may end with passengers disembarking at Kangerlussuaq for their flight home. These itineraries would allow visitors to extend their stay in Greenland and visit the country independently or as part of an organized tour.

Once travelers arrive to Greenland they're faced with another challenge, how to get around. There are no roads connecting one settlement to the other. Even Nuuk, the capital, is geographically isolated from the rest of the island's settlements. The only exception is a 3-mile (5-kilometer) gravel road between  Kangilinnguit  and the now abandoned former  cryolite  mining town of  Ivittuu . So within Greenland, travelers have the following options for getting from place to place:

  • By air, on connector/commuter flights operated by IcelandAir and Air Greenland
  • By helicopter, on private flights or tours
  • By sea, on local/regional ferries
  • By cruise ship, on an itinerary that originates in Greenland
  • By snowmobile or dogsled, for shorter distances

These logistical transportation challenges are a big part of the reason that so many travelers to Greenland rely on tour companies, which book flights and other transfers, tours, and accommodations — it's just easier to leave the planning to someone else.

Flights from Reykjavik to Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq take about 3.5 hours. The flight from Copenhagen to Nuuk or Kangerlussuaq takes about 4.5 hours. On a cruise ship, you'll need at least one day to cross the Denmark Strait from Iceland to Greenland.

here's not really a low-cost way to get to Greenland. Though there are seasonal fluctuations in price, travelers should expect to spend between $600-$800 for a round-trip flight from Reykjavik or Copenhagen.

The most expensive way to get to Greenland is on an expedition cruise, which can cost from $5,000 to $25,000 or more, depending on the itinerary.

There are virtually no roads or railways in Greenland, in part because the coastal fjords would require ferry service to connect a road network. The only ways to get from place to place on the island are via commuter plane flights, passenger ferries, helicopters, snowmobiles, or dogsleds.

Already planning to see the next solar eclipse in 2026? What travelers need to know.

Umbraphiles feeling the post-eclipse blues should start checking the expiration date on their passports.

The next total solar eclipse is set to happen on Aug. 12, 2026, over Greenland, Iceland, Spain, Russia and a small part of Portugal, according to NASA .

In North America, only a partial eclipse will be visible, so if April’s event made you an eclipse chaser and you want to see totality, you’ll need to head overseas.

Here’s what you’ll need to know before packing your bags:

Do you need a passport or visa for the best destination?

The path of totality for the 2026 eclipse mostly goes through places Americans can travel visa-free with their passport, so long as they’re planning to stay for less than 90 days.

Spain, Portugal, Iceland and Greenland all allow visa-free tourist travel for U.S. passport holders.

Spain, Portugal and Iceland are also members of the Schengen Area, which allows for visa-free travel in much of Europe, meaning if you decide to make a multi-country trip out of your eclipse adventure, you won’t need to clear customs if you’re coming from much of the rest of Europe, either.

One major change for travelers to Europe from the U.S., however, is that electronic preauthorization will become a requirement beginning in mid-2025. The European Travel Information and Authorization System (ETIAS) requirement will apply to all four open countries in the path of totality.

Depending on the state of the Ukraine war, travel to Russia may or may not be an option for most Americans by 2026, so it’s unclear what the paperwork requirements will be by then.

Is it better to see it from the beach?

Beaches can be a great place to see the eclipse because there are few natural obstacles blocking observers’ views of the sky. The 2026 path of totality passes over beaches on Spain’s northern and southeastern coasts, as well as over islands in the Mediterranean Sea including Mallorca, Menorca and Ibiza. The eclipse will also pass over coastal areas in Greenland and Iceland, according to the National Solar Observatory .

Cruising Altitude: What it was like to see the eclipse from a plane

Will there be eclipse cruises or flights?

Almost certainly, although most operators have not announced specific plans yet.

Cruise lines will also offer more viewing opportunities. Princess Cruises “has created a bespoke itinerary aboard Sky Princess to position the ship near Spain on that date,” according to a spokesperson for the line. The cruise will open for bookings on Princess’s website on May 23.

Cunard Line has sailings on its Queen Mary 2 , Queen Victoria and Queen Anne vessels that will put passengers in prime spots to watch .

'The ship can move': Why you should watch next solar eclipses from a cruise ship

Holland America Line is also planning multiple sailings around the event, though details are still to be announced. “Guests have reacted positively to our 2024 eclipse cruises and with the next full eclipse in 2026 we plan to have three sailings in Europe that will align with the path of the eclipse,” Paul Grigsby, the line's vice president of Deployment & Itinerary Planning, previously told USA TODAY in an email.

Want to see the next total solar eclipse in 2026? An expert recommends booking travel now.

  • 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years.
  • Travelers worldwide will likely head to Spain, Iceland, and Greenland for the event.
  • A hotel expert encouraged travelers to start planning and booking their trips now.

Insider Today

It'll be two decades before the next total solar eclipse hits the US .

Another option: hop on a plane to Europe and turn the 2026 total solar eclipse into a viewing vacation.

Eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com told Space.com that up to 3.7 million people likely traveled for the solar eclipse on Monday.

HotelPlanner's chief communication officer, Philip Ballard, told Business Insider that the eclipse was a major revenue generator for many cities. For places like Austin, Texas, and Rochester, New York, it could have created $1 billion in revenue, Vox reported.

"I would say the total solar eclipse has become a global phenomenon," Ballard said.

Ballard added that the next solar eclipse , which will pass through Iceland, Greenland, and Spain on August 12, 2026, could result in similar tourism and revenue influxes.

And if travelers are considering a trip to Europe for the solar eclipse, Ballard recommends planning your trip now.

Determine your eclipse viewing destination

According to Space.com , 2026 will be Europe's first total solar eclipse in 27 years. Its path will go through Greenland, parts of western Iceland, and northern Spain.

Choosing where to watch the eclipse will be a tough and important decision for travelers.

Iceland and Greenland have some positives. These regions will experience longer totality times, so viewers can watch the eclipse longer. Plus, the sun will be higher in the sky, so finding a spot to watch the eclipse will be less challenging, Space.com reported.

The downside is that these regions are more likely to be cloudy, according to the outlet.

Related stories

While parts of Spain are likely to offer clearer skies, the eclipse's timing will be shorter and closer to the horizon, which means travelers will need to plan and track down a viewing location with unobstructed views of the western horizon, Space.com reported.

Regardless of the destination, according to the outlet, one bonus is that the strongest meteor shower in the Northern Hemisphere will happen the following night, so travelers can pack two events into one trip.

Book flights and hotels far in advance

Ballard encouraged people to book their hotels in their destination of choice as far in advance as possible.

"You should start looking now and booking hotels now because those cities in the path are already going to be at peak season," Ballard said.

Ballard said it's similar to when a Super Bowl city is determined or a Taylor Swift tour date is announced — you immediately see spikes in bookings. He predicts hotel occupancy rates will hit near-record highs, and room prices may double around the solar eclipse date.

Ballard's general rule of thumb is to book international travel at least three months in advance, but since this is such an anticipated event, booking earlier is smart. His advice is to start discussing plans with friends and family. If you decide on a destination, book a refundable room to keep your options open if plans change.

Regarding purchasing a plane ticket, a study from Expedia states that international travel's sweet spot is at least six months in advance.

According to Expedia, travelers who book six months in advance save an average of 10% more than travelers booking within two months or less.

Skip the hassle of planning altogether and book a solar eclipse tour

Another option is to let a tour operator do the work for you. A handful of tour companies have seen the increased interest in the solar eclipse and launched tours designed around the event.

These tours will have predetermined locations to view the eclipse, hotel blocks reserved, and itineraries highlighting both the region and the eclipse.

However, these can sell out quickly. For example, Space and Telescope created an 11-day tour of Spain around viewing the 2026 solar eclipse. The tour has already sold out as of Wednesday, and the waitlist is full.

Other operators, such as Wilderness Travel and Eclipse Traveler, have similar itineraries for the total eclipse in 2026.

Watch: A small Australian town was treated to a rare hybrid solar eclipse

View of Kulusuk village in Greenland on a clear sunny day with colourful houses in view

About 4,500 years ago, early man migrated thousands of perilous miles from Canada into Greenland.

And when they got there and saw the ice-covered mountains, glaciers and resident polar bears, they stopped and said ‘Yep, this looks like the spot.’ And who can blame them? It may be cold, but the unfenced wilderness of the world’s biggest (and least populated) island is worth wearing a scarf 11 months of the year for. Although technically still part of Denmark , Greenland is now self-governing and has a proud Inuit culture. And with no crowds, little crime and only a few roads to break up the endless ice flow, it’s easy to see the appeal (just don’t forget that scarf).

Best time to visit greenland.

Generally the summer months of June, July and August are the time to see Greenland, but it does depend what you’re looking for. At midyear the country isn’t as chilly as it can be (temperatures can rise as high as a sweltering 15°C…) and you’ll get to experience the phenomenon of the midnight sun. Of course, if it’s the night lights of the aurora borealis you’re after, the time to go is definitely October through to March, when temperatures can plummet to well below freezing. Pack accordingly.

Geography and environment

When 84 per cent of your country is covered in the world’s largest ice sheet (and the rest is classed as permafrost), geography may seem kind of self-explanatory. But Greenland’s coastal fringes are where most of the magic happens. Plunging fjords, rocky promontories, trundling glaciers calving off into the Labrador Sea. Most of the settlements along the western coast are colourful wooden houses painted every colour of the rainbow. Towns and settlements are virtually cut-off from each other (roads are very rare in Greenland), so most trade and movement is done by sea and air.

Top 5 wildlife experiences in Greenland

1. humpback whale.

Humpback whales migrate to the cooler waters of the Arctic to feed each year. It’s a mammoth journey, often spanning thousands of kilometres (and all at travelling just a few kilometres per hour). That’s probably why humpbacks like to blow off a bit of steam in Greenland. Around Aasiaat, Qeqertarsuaq and Sisimiut between April and November it’s not an uncommon sight to see a 30-tonne humpback leaping clear out of the water.

In the Middle Ages, Inuits and Norse tribesmen would trade narwhal horns for fabulous sums (they were the marine equivalent of a unicorn). Thankfully the horn trade is over and these beautiful toothed whales can swim and eat in peace. They’re usually found in Melville Bay and around Qaanaaq, where their spiralling three-metre tusk can be seen poking through the surface of the water.

3. Polar bear

This is the world’s largest land predator, and the chances of seeing one increase when you’re on the water. Cruising along the coast of west or north-east Greenland is your best shot at spotting one of these creatures, but don’t hold your breath – they can be quite aloof. But the good news is that if they are out there, they are quite easy to see due to their off-white fur standing out against the snow-white ice.

4. Arctic fox

Technically there are two types of Arctic fox in Greenland – the classic white and the blue. Both species change colour depending on the season in order to blend in with the rocky landscape and the polar ice sheet. Arctic foxes live on an almost exclusive diet of lemmings – so when lemming populations drop, so do the number of foxes. Thankfully numbers are strong, and the Arctic fox isn’t a threatened species.

5. White-tailed eagle

Don’t forget to look up every now and then: Greenland has a huge and colourful variety of birdlife. The biggest and most striking bird is the white-tailed eagle (known as the nattoralik in Greenlandic). You’ll usually find them circling along the west coast down to Cape Farewell, hoping to find a cod, char or smaller sea bird to stoop. These birds are as rare as they are beautiful, and are officially a protected species in Greenland.

10 'coolest' vacation spots to escape the heat this summer

A fter last summer's sweltering, record-breaking heat, many travelers are turning to cooler climates for this coming summer travel season. There's no doubt that climate change is affecting seasonal weather patterns around the world, and the way we travel reflects that.

While beach getaways or European sojourns tend to be the favorites from June through August, travelers who opt for temperate weather destinations will be rewarded, likely, with fewer crowds and one-of-a-kind experiences.

Destinations like Greenland wow travelers with the legendary midnight sun , while Garzon, Uruguay, surprises with one of the best restaurants in the world in a small village of less than 200 people. Explore the fishing villages of Canada's Maritime Provinces, or ski down a mountain in southern Australia.

Which destinations have our attention for a cooler summer season? Read on to discover the top coolcations for 2024.

North Cascades National Park, Washington

Washington's North Cascades National Park is a moody, majestic fairy-tale landscape of pristine wilderness and breathtaking natural beauty. Picture towering mountain peaks that rise up from lush forests and a soundtrack of cascading waterfalls. And with an average summer temperature of 51 degrees Fahrenheit, it's the perfect balmy base for a cool summer getaway.

Summer in the North Cascades, while cooler than at other national parks, is still peak time for hiking the park's miles of trails. Drink in spectacular views of snowcapped mountains as you cross alpine meadows brushed with streaks of wildflowers and dotted with bright-blue alpine lakes. Summer is also the time when wildlife in the park is most active, so bring binoculars for a chance to spot black bears, bald eagles and scruffy marmots.

The rivers of the park open up for recreation in the summer, too, when kayaks and canoes paddle through the alpine water, or across the glassy surface of Diablo Lake.

South Island, New Zealand

Not sure where to find a cool-weather summer vacation? Head to where it's winter, of course. Traveling to the Southern Hemisphere during the winter season is a fantastic option to keep things chill. New Zealand 's South Island, for example, combines breathtaking beauty and adventure during the winter — and with an average temperature of 42 degrees Fahrenheit, it's definitely a coolcation.

Your first image of New Zealand's wintry landscape will be of snowcapped mountains dotted with alpine villages. If you're a skier, you can enjoy a year-round ski season by heading to the South Island to experience the slopes of the Southern Alps. The region's iconic fjords are straight out of a fairy tale in winter, dusted with snow and hushed in majestic silence.

For travelers who like to keep things more relaxed, Queenstown, Wanaka and Arrowtown are known for their cozy vibes, with plenty of hearth-warmed taverns and restaurants, hot springs and cute boutiques.

White Mountains, New Hampshire

New Hampshire's White Mountains offer an East Coast alpine experience, where rugged peaks, lush forests and crystal-clear lakes set the scene for a relaxed, cooler summer. The average summer temperature in this part of New Hampshire is about 63 degrees Fahrenheit.

Summer is the perfect time to head to the charming mountain towns of North Conway and Lincoln, two anchor villages from which to explore the mountain trails. Experienced hikers can make the trek up Mount Washington, which rewards with gorgeous views over the rolling hills and valleys of New England.

Adventure seekers can flex their skills rock climbing or mountain biking throughout the mountain range as well, thanks to its rugged granite cliff faces and twisty single-track trails.

Come evening, hunker down in North Conway at the snug and cozy Chef's Bistro for a fantastic locally sourced dinner and a strong cocktail.

Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada

Our neighbor to the north is always a stunner, no matter the season, but summer in Newfoundland and Labrador is particularly beautiful. The easternmost province of Canada, Newfoundland and Labrador wows with rugged beauty, from cliffs that plunge into the churning Atlantic to delightful villages that are steeped in centuries of history and tradition.

Newfoundland and Labrador is a large province, so summer temperatures can range from 40 degrees Fahrenheit in northern Labrador to 60 degrees Fahrenheit down in Newfoundland and in the interior. Still, that keeps things quite mild even in the hottest months of summer. More hours of daylight means that you can fit so much more into a day's adventure, as well.

R elated: 5 small Canadian cities you can use points and miles to visit this year

Exploring coastal villages is one of the highlights of visiting this part of Canada, especially during summer when festivities are in full swing. Soak in the colorful houses of St. John's, or the sleepy, laid-back living of Bonavista. Trace the region's rich history as you explore the remnants of an ancient Viking settlement at L'Anse aux Meadows, then stop into a local pub for live music and fresh seafood.

Newfoundland and Labrador is also epically beautiful, from the rugged East Coast Trail to the kayaking channels through fjords and bays. The province has quite a few national parks, including Gros Morne National Park, which is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Falls Creek, Australia

Another captivating Southern Hemisphere destination, Falls Creek in Victoria, Australia , beckons with its wonderland scenery and an average temperature of just 37 degrees Fahrenheit.

Located in the southernmost state, high in the Australian Alps, stunning views encompass spectacular snow-covered peaks, babbling streams and towering gum trees. The village of Falls Creek itself is packed with cozy ski lodges, chalets and quaint cafes.

Most travelers come to Falls Creek for winter sports, with more than 90 runs that cater to skiers and snowboarders of every skill set. You can also cross-country ski, snowshoe and snowmobile through the white, fluffy landscape.

Of course, the apres-ski scene in Falls Creek is just as exciting, with bars bubbling with live music, fantastic restaurants and lots of roaring fires in fireplaces.

Garzon, Uruguay

Uruguay is a fantastic option for travel anytime of year because it tends to receive fewer crowds than nearby destinations like Argentina or Brazil. For such a small country, it packs it all in, from fantastic food to stunning landscapes and ocean access.

Traveling to Garzon in the winter means green countryside, rural landscapes and a peaceful ambience — and an average temperature of 62 degrees Fahrenheit.

Garzon seems to be lifted from the pages of a storybook, with rolling vineyards and olive groves, hiking trails, and rustic taverns. It's also home to renowned restaurants helmed by world-class chefs, making it a gastronomic hot spot. Restaurant Garzon, the vision of internationally acclaimed chef Francis Mallmann, is one of the best restaurants in the country and positively drips with a romantic ambience. The food here is rustic but elevated, from empanadas baked in the clay oven to homemade spinach ravioli, bricklayer steak and an impossibly perfect smoked chicken. The wine comes from both Uruguay and Argentina.

While we're at it, let's do one more in the Southern Hemisphere. Cape Town, South Africa , is one of the world's greatest destinations, but its winter season means far fewer crowds, lower hotel rates and an average daily temperature of 68 degrees Fahrenheit.

As you arrive in Cape Town, you'll be awestruck by the sheer beauty of Table Mountain, which will be blanketed in green in the winter months thanks to the rainy season. The Cape Peninsula is one of the most ecologically diverse destinations on the planet, so visitors will have the opportunity to see the area come alive with brilliant flora as they hike Table Mountain or navigate the scenic Chapman's Peak Drive.

Cape Town is a foodie destination with bustling restaurants, cafes and markets and a vibrant wine scene. It's also a place to experience fascinating museums, galleries and historical sites. The District Six Museum sheds light on South Africa and Cape Town's heartbreaking history, while the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary Art Africa spotlights the gorgeous art and culture of the region and beyond.

Of course, you don't have to steer clear of Europe entirely to have a cooler summer experience. Amsterdam 's summer temperatures rarely hover above 70 degrees Fahrenheit. Traveling to Amsterdam in the summer is an enchanting experience; the city comes alive with colorful flowers and the canals hum with activity.

One of the highlights of visiting Amsterdam in the summer is the abundance of outdoor opportunities. The city is strewn with parks and gardens where both locals and visitors love to picnic and enjoy the convivial energy. Vondelpark, the city's largest park, is known for its outdoor concerts, while the Hortus Botanicus garden offers a peaceful escape from the rattle and hum of the city.

Cultural events are at their peak in Amsterdam's summer, too, from open-air concerts and outdoor film screenings to art exhibitions. The Holland Festival, the Amsterdam Dance Event, and Open Garden Days are a few of the noteworthy experiences to check out in the summer.

The culinary scene in Amsterdam is legendary, from local markets to international fare across the top restaurants and eateries. Visitors can sample stroopwafels, herring and bitterballen all around the city, or sip cocktails on rooftop terraces before cruising the canals beneath the stars.

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc, France

Chamonix-Mont-Blanc may get the lion's share of its visitors during ski season, but summer is an equally epic time to visit the heart of the French Alps. The area has an average summer temperature of 67 degrees Fahrenheit, making it the perfect balmy escape, full of towering peaks, sprawling meadows and crystal-clear lakes.

One of the highlights of visiting in the summer is the network of hiking trails that traverse flower-strewn meadows and rugged peaks. The hike to Lac Blanc is one of the most popular, thanks to its views of the Mont Blanc range. Mountain bikers will also have the opportunity to tackle the region's world-class trails and downhill tracks. For those who prefer to take it slow, there is the Aiguille du Midi cable car.

After exploring the pristine, raw nature, head back to Chamonix-Mont-Blanc to dip into its rich food scene, from hearty raclette and fondue to pastries and local wine.

One of the planet's last great uncharted tourist territories is Greenland, where towering icebergs, majestic fjords and vast expanses of tundra create ample opportunity for adventure. The world's largest island presents a perfect backdrop for an Arctic summer, where temperatures range between 32 and 50 degrees Fahrenheit during the fleeting season.

Arctic wilderness is unlike any other landscape, and Greenland's glaciers, rivers and mountains are no exception. One of the highlights of visiting Greenland in the summer is experiencing the midnight sun, where the sun never fully sets in the Arctic Circle, casting a soft glow over the landscape well into the night.

Wildlife is at its peak in Greenland during the summer, too. Visitors have the chance to spot seals, Arctic foxes, polar bears and even whales. Boat tours, kayaking expeditions and guided hikes are at their peak in Greenland over the summer.

The culture of Greenland is fascinatingly rich with Inuit traditions and practices. Travelers can learn about these ancient communities, as well as sample Greenlandic cuisine and participate in events and festivals. The National Day festival June 21 is the most celebrated summer event, where the entire country comes together for music, folk dancing and celebration of national identity.

A jaw-dropping ‘sunset eclipse’ is the next total solar eclipse in the lower 48.

The "diamond ring" effect is seen during a total solar eclipse across North America, in Magog, ... [+] Quebec, Canada, on April 8, 2024. This year's path of totality is 115 miles (185 kilometers) wide and home to nearly 32 million Americans, with an additional 150 million living less than 200 miles from the strip. The next total solar eclipse that can be seen from a large part of North America won't come around until 2044. (Photo by Stan Honda / AFP) (Photo by STAN HONDA/AFP via Getty Images)

The “Great North American Eclipse” is over—but when is the next eclipse in the U.S.?

A lot of U.S. media gets this wrong, with “20 years” often parroted by journalists who don’t fact-check. It’s not true.

The next total solar eclipse in the continental U.S. is on March 30, 2033, when Alaska (and Russia) will see a totality lasting up to 2 minutes 37 seconds.

The next total solar eclipse in the contiguous U.S. (contiguous refers to the lower 48 states in North America, including the District of Columbia) will occur on August 22, 2044.

America’s “Generation Eclipse” will live through a golden age of total solar eclipses that’s now well underway after two in less than six years in 2017 and 2024.

Here’s the next one that most Americans will be able to drive to—a “Sunset Totality Eclipse” in 2044

The path of totality on August 22, 2044.

Eclipse 2044: Path Of Totality

A mighty 281 miles/453 kilometers wide on average, the path of totality on August 22, 2044—reproduced with permission from eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler ’s Atlas of Solar Eclipses - 2020 to 2045 —will stretch from Greenland through Canada’s Northwest Territories, with the maximum duration of totality just south of Great Bear Lake. It will cross the Mackenzie Highway in the Northwest Territories, just south of Jean Marie River, before moving across the northeastern part of British Columbia, from northwest to southeast Alberta and southwest Saskatchewan.

The path will then continue through Alberta to finish in Montana, South Dakota and North Dakota—where the Great Plains meet the Badlands and where an eclipse sunset will be visible on the horizon. Just 5.5 million live within the path, according to Timeanddate .

Pipestone river rushes below Whitehorn Mountain, Banff National Park, Canada.

Eclipse 2044: Where To Watch

Unlike April 8’s eclipse, the 2044 total solar eclipse will last just 2 minutes 4 seconds—and just 1 minute 44 seconds in the U.S.—but don’t be fooled by that. This could arguably be one of the most dramatic total solar eclipses ever for anyone who makes the journey to see a “golden corona,” which is only viewable during a “horizon-proximity” eclipse such as this one.

However, that means you will need a clear view of the western horizon—which rules out places in the mountains, such as Lake Louise in Banff National Park. It’s typical that the places with a view of the eclipse higher in the sky have a high chance of clouds, while those close to the end of the path have the best chance of clear skies.

Here are a few notable places to watch it from:

  • Edith Lake, Jasper National Park, Alberta, Canada: 1 minute 43 seconds, eclipse at 11 degrees above west, 71% chance of cloud.
  • Whitehorn Mountain, Banff National Park, Alberta, Canada: 1 minute 43 seconds, eclipse at 10 degrees above west, 63% chance of cloud.
  • Calgary Tower, Calgary, Alberta, Canada: 1 minute 49 seconds, eclipse at 8 degrees above west, 49% chance of cloud.
  • Edmonton, Alberta, Canada: 1 minute 25 seconds, eclipse at 9 degrees above west, 60% chance of cloud.
  • Bowdoin National Wildlife Refuge , Malta, Montana, U.S.: 1 minute 42 seconds, eclipse 3.5 degrees above west (flat horizon), 32% chance of cloud.
  • Sleeping Buffalo Rock and Monument , Saco, Montana, U.S: 1 minute 42 seconds, eclipse 3.5 degrees above west, 35% chance of cloud.
  • Glasgow, Montana, U.S: 1 minute 41 seconds, eclipse 2.8 degrees above west (flat horizon), 35% chance of cloud.
  • Theodore Roosevelt National Park , North Dakota, U.S.: 1 minute 36 seconds, eclipse, 00.3 degrees (horizon-proximity) above west, 34% chance of cloud.

Calgary Tower, Calgary

Eclipse 2044: The Next Eclipse?

Although the total solar eclipse in 2044 is the next one in the contiguous U.S., it is not the next one. On March 30, 2033, a total solar eclipse will come to Alaska (as well as to Siberia in Russia), with St. Lawrence Island, Barrow/Utqiagvik, Kotzebue and Nome the best places to be for a totality lasting up to 2 minutes 37 seconds. That time of year is also peak season for the aurora borealis, though finding a clear sky may be challenging.

If you can’t wait until 2044, consider Spain , Iceland or Greenland for the August 12, 2026, total solar eclipse —or any of the many” Great Un-American Eclipses” in the next few years.

Wishing you clear skies and wide eyes.
