Free overnight RV parking locations can be very beneficial for RVers traveling longer distances from one campground to another. Many of America’s parking lots are empty at night. And often, RVers going from one park to another do not need the hookups and amenities or expense of a regular RV campground. All they want is a place to park for a couple of hours of sleep before hitting the road again. So here is our list of 25 Free Overnight RV Parking Locations:

  • Bass Pro Shops
  • Camping World
  • City Sponsored Parks
  • Cracker Barrel
  • Elks Lodges
  • Boondockers Welcome
  • Movie Theaters
  • Moose Lodges
  • Sam’s Club
  • Super Markets
  • Truck Stops
  • Planet Fitness
  • Harvest Hosts

Done correctly, overnight RV parking can be a win-win situation where everyone benefits. Truck stops regularly provide space, showers, meals, and other amenities for truckers and will often extend the service to RVers. They know that, just like truckers, RVers use and pay for the facilities inside.

Retail stores like Walmart, Cabelas, and Bass Pro benefit from the sales to overnighters who come in and browse the store the next day. Restaurants like Cracker Barrel will let RVers stay overnight in the hope that their overnight guests have dinner or breakfast in their restaurants.

Maintaining this relationship means that RVers must also be active and respectful participants and respect their hosts and their property. It is essential that we, as RVers, follow proper overnight parking rules of etiquette. If we do not, we may find that the free overnight parking locations currently available to us quickly disappear.

Who decides where an RVer may or may not park overnight during a journey to a distant adventure? The answer should be clear. It’s the owner or manager of the property where the RVer wants to park.

How To Find Free Overnight RV Parking

What if there was an app or a website where you could easily type in your location and free overnight RV locations that are updated by other RVers popped right up on your phone or computer screen? And what if it only cost you $2.00 a month to have this awesome program available at the touch of a button when you are tired of driving all day. And how much money could you save on campground fees if you just had a free place to park overnight rather than paying $40 or $50 bucks at a campground just to spend the night and then get up and leave in the morning?

Well, you can read the list of the 25 free overnight RV parking locations below but to find each of the specific locations for these businesses that allow free overnight RV parking you should use our favorite website and that is OvernightRVParking .com. We love this app and highly recommend it to our fellow RVers.

It is a search database with over 14,000 free overnight RV parking locations across the US and Canada and it is updated on a regular basis by RVers like you and me so you get the latest most accurate information about every RV parking location. Keep in mind, for those traveling outside the US, you will have to find other reliable sources for RV parking. Rules for overnight RV parking in the UK for example could be very different than in the US.

And it’s cheap! It’s only $29.99 a year when you use the discount code RVBLOGGER (all caps). We figure if you stay one night for free somewhere you have more than covered the cost of the app. We love this app and try to share it with everyone we know because you just can’t go wrong with it. So, please feel free to click here and use our link and save$10.00 . I bet you’ll love it too!

When you sign up please go through the website and after you have joined then go ahead and download the app onto your phone. It works much better that way for some reason. If you need more info check out the article I wrote about OvernightRVParking. It’s in the helpful blog articles highlighted at the end of this article.

Here is a YouTube video which is our review and tutorial of the OvernightRVParking Website and App. Check it out! We love it and think you will too!

Overnight RV Parking Etiquette (RVers’ Good Neighbor Policy)

Following these simple rules can go a long way toward keeping our hosts happy and our free overnight parking spots open.

  • Stay one night only!
  • Obtain permission from a qualified individual.
  • Obey posted regulations.
  • No awnings, chairs, or barbecue grills.
  • Do not use hydraulic jacks on soft surfaces (including asphalt).
  • Always leave the area cleaner than you found it.
  • Purchase gas, food, and other supplies as a form of thank you, when feasible.
  • Be safe! Always be aware of your surroundings and leave if you feel unsafe.

The following is a list of 25 Free Overnight RV Parking Locations offering Free overnight parking to RVers

One thing to always consider is that towns or cities can have local ordinances that can override a business’s policy. That is one reason why it is still essential to ask first. Of there is a local ordinance forbidding overnight parking, there should be signs posted to inform the public.

1. Walmart

Over 80% of Walmart’s across the U.S. allow free overnight parking on their premises. Best of all, there is a Walmart in almost every city or town in America, and they are often easily accessible right off the interstates. Check out our YouTube Video Below about staying overnight at Walmart for free.

2. Bass Pro Shops

Most camping stores like Bass Pro Shops are delighted to allow free overnight RV parking, especially if you are stocking up on supplies or equipment. Just check with the management if you are unsure.

Like Bass Pro Shops, Cabelas will often welcome free overnight parking. Return the favor by stocking up on a few needed supplies before leaving. And again, check with the store manager if you have any questions.

4. Camping World

In the past, Camping World was always a reliable spot for a free, one-night overnight stay. However, as Camping World has changed its focus from accessories, parts, and service to RV sales, this has changed. AN increasing number of Camping World stores now have fenced and gated parking lots which are locked at night, and they no longer welcome overnight RV stays.

It does seem, however, that a new twist is developing. Camping World in Wood Village, Oregon now allows overnight RV parking if the RV was purchased at a Camping World dealership. That is, of course, if you jump through all of the hoops like arriving before closing time, asking permission, verifying that your RV was purchased from a Camping World dealership, and obtaining an overnight RV parking pass which must be displayed on your rig. No parking pass means no overnight stays, and the excellent possibility of your RV will be towed off in the middle of the night.

You might think overnight parking at a Casino would be a bit of a gamble, but most Casinos allow free overnight parking. Just check with the casino security to get your overnight parking pass.

6. Churches

As long as it’s not a Saturday or maybe a Wednesday night, it’s not usually an issue to park overnight at a church. For the sake of common courtesy, please ask permission before you spend the night.

7. City Sponsored Parks

City park campgrounds are usually located in smaller towns and run by the municipal government.

There are usually community activities going on, such as sports fields, pools, playgrounds, picnic areas, and even access to lakes and rivers. Therefore, these parks could become more crowded with both locals and visitors on the weekends, so you might Want to plan or call ahead. Often overnight parking spots in these city parks are free or offered for a nominal fee.

Costco locations are often very convenient, and their parking lots are usually well-lit, providing a pleasant environment for overnight parking. As an added benefit, you can purchase gas, camping gear, RV supplies, groceries, and even tires at significantly discounted prices. Just join Costco!

9. Cracker Barrel

You’ve been driving all day. You’re tired, hungry, and need a few hours of rest. All you need is a spot to park your RV for a meal and a few hours of sleep. Another overnight RV parking option is Cracker Barrel. Just remember that every location has different rules, so it’s proper etiquette to obtain permission from the manager. You can even call ahead to do this. Now, you can enjoy a good meal and rest.

We wrote an article called Can RVs Park Overnight at Cracker Barrel? where you can learn all about it! We love to stay overnight there because we can get a great dinner at night and breakfast before hitting the road in the morning!

10. Elks Lodges

As many RVers know, one of the many benefits of joining your local Elks Lodge is the availability of RV accommodations at Elks Lodges. There are more than 2,000 Elks Lodges in the USA, and about half of them have RV facilities of some sort. Here is a handy link to every Elks Lodge in the US for overnight RV parking. The facilities range from full-fledged RV parks with 30/50A electric and water hookups, sewer connections, and even Cable TV, to a spot to dry camp in one corner of the Lodge parking lot, and everything in between.

In nearly every case, these RV facilities are for the use of Elk Members in good standing only. Some lodges do allow the RV of a non-Elk who is traveling with an Elk RV to stay as the guest of the visiting Elk.

11. Boondockers Welcome

Boondockers Welcome isn’t quite free but it’s pretty close! Once you’ve purchased a guest subscription, which is very reasonable by the way, you’ll be able to request stays with thousands of hosts. And Boondockers Welcome adds more and more hosts every day. I get emails from them every few weeks with a list of new hosts they have added.

The Hosts are typically RVers like you and me who are willing to let you stay overnight for free on their property. And you’re sure to make some great friends while saving a few dollars on your adventure. Please go to Boondockers Welcome here and check them out . For a small fee, you can have thousands of free places a year to park your RV overnight!

12. Home Depot

Many big stores such as Home Depot will allow you to park overnight on their lot. Often, the manager of the store has the final say, so it is always best to talk to the manager and get permission. Follow the rules and thank the store by stocking up with some supplies or gear before you leave.

Like Home Depot, some Kmart stores will allow you to park your RV overnight on their lot. The manager of the store does have the final say, so like with Home Depot, it is always best to talk to the store manager and get permission. Follow the manager’s rules and thank the store by getting a few supplies before you leave.

Lowes falls into the same category as Home Depot and Kmart. Many stores will allow RVs to park for free overnight on their lot. The best thing to do is to check with the manager of the store and get permission. Again, follow the rules and thank the store by spending a little money before you leave.

Some malls permit overnight RV parking as well. However, you will want to check with the proper Mall office or authority to get permission to park overnight. You will not want to be woken up at 2:00 am to find out that the Mall parking lot you where you are parked does not allow overnight parking, and has called a tow truck.

16. Menards

Unless local ordinances forbid it, Menards is another regional retailer that typically allows RVers to park overnight for free on their lots. Follow the rules of etiquette and ask for permission. Spend a little money to say thank you and be gone by mid-morning.

17. Movie Theaters

You watched a late movie, and you’re too tired to drive on? It’s usually not an issue. Just ask permission if you’re unsure.

18. Moose Lodges

Moose Lodges have the same availability of RV accommodations for its members as Elks Lodges. You must be a Moose member to stay overnight in your RV but there are Moose Lodges all over the US.

19. Rest Areas

Some rest areas (in some States) allow you to stay overnight. You can check with the State Police or Highway Department. Even those rest areas where you can’t stay overnight, you can often pull in for a few hours and take a nap if needed.

20. Sam’s Club

Sam’s Clubs are another very convenient place to stay overnight for free in your RV. And their parking lots are also usually well-lit, which provides a pleasant and safe environment for free overnight RV parking. As an added benefit, you can purchase gas, camping gear, RV supplies, groceries, and even tires at significantly discounted prices. Make sure you have your Sam’s Club card!

21. Super Markets

Supermarkets can provide a well-lit parking spot for RVers. Some RVers view the well-lit parking lots as a safer place to park overnight. Again, always check with the store manager to get permission to park overnight in your RV. And you can stock up on groceries while you are there too!

Target is like the other big stores. Policies may vary depending on the store’s manager. Talk to the manager and get permission before staying overnight. If the store is gracious enough to allow you to use their parking lot overnight, follow the rules and spend some cash before taking off in the morning.

23. Truck Stops

Truck Stops such as Travel Centers of America or Flying J aren’t just for trucks, 18 wheelers, or over-sized rigs anymore. RVers are taking advantage of overnight parking at truck stops across the country every day. As long as you follow the rules of truckers, you’ll be fine. Be courteous, park straight, and be gone by mid-morning. Many now have separate parking areas for RVs.

It is important to remember that Truck stops do attract all sorts of people. Make sure you lock your doors, windows, and keep valuables out of sight for safety whether you’re in the RV or out exploring.

24. Planet Fitness

Some Planet Fitness locations allow RVers to park overnight if you have a membership to the gym. It’s a great place to park for the night and get a workout in the morning!

25. Harvest Hosts

Harvest Hosts is by far our favorite free (or almost free) overnight RV parking location. It’s not exactly free because you have to pay a very reasonable membership fee but then you have access to almost 1000 free overnight RV parking locations. And these are gorgeous locations at wineries, breweries, and farms across the US. And you can add on Golf Plan to add another 400+ free overnight RV parking locations.

PRO TIP: In our opinion, this is the very best option for free overnight RV parking. It’s way better than any parking lot you can find! I wrote an article called Harvest Hosts – A Great Way to Camp for Free!   or you can use our link and go straight to the Harvest Hosts website to learn all about it. Pay attention to City Ordinances that prohibit Camping in the City. For example: Sedona AZ- a lot of these apps and websites suggest parking in private property business lots which is illegal. https://sedona.municipal.codes/SCC/9.10.010

We’re relatively new to RVing, but we’ve had our best rest at Cracker Barrels and casinos. We’ve found WalMart lots to be sketchy sometimes, and near cities they are more likely to have homeless long-term parkers. We’ve encountered some hostility in truck stops; one night we were neatly parked in the RV section of a Flying J when a truck went through in the wee hours and blew his nifty train horn for several seconds. We haven’t tried Cabela’s yet, but our local store has a nice parking area and a dump station, so we’re open to the idea.

How To RV Overnight at Trucks Stops: 6 Do’s and Don’ts

There is an etiquette to staying overnight at a truck stop. yes, truck stops that welcome over-night travelers can be found on most major highways, but don’t get in a jam by assuming you and your rv are automatically welcome., this is part 5 of the 6-part series “cheap and free rv camping you will love”.

When you just need to get from point A to point B, and the only place to stop for a night is a Truck Stop, they are a great option. You may have heard truck stop horror-stories, and sometimes with good reason, but I’ve stayed at truck stops many times with no problem.  If you want to have this as an overnight option in your travels, don’t despair; here’s a guide to help you.

How to RV Overnight at Truck-Stops: 6 Do’s and Don’ts

<img data-attachment-id=

  • Do give the Truck Stop your business. Another benefit of staying at a truck stop is that many offer propane, dump stations, potable water and even laundry and showers. Get a good night sleep, then hit the road fully loaded and gassed up with a fresh cup of java!
  • Do have several travel apps handy like Allstays , RVParky or FreeCampsites.net. Take time to check the most recent reviews; if you see others have had problems, avoid that stop. (Want to make sure your planned stop has RV-dedicated parking spaces? Then, use Allstays; they list the number of RV spots available!
  • Do tuck into a back-corner of the lot in a spot not meant for trucks, if a dedicated RV spot is not offered.
  • Do back-in, so if you need to leave you can pull right out.

<img data-attachment-id=

Don’t:

  • Don’t take a truckers spot! New laws require that truck drivers rest a certain number of hours, and unlike us, their only option is truck stops or rest stops. If you see a the parking lot is crowded, move-on. Otherwise, you might be taking a spot a trucker needs to have and that causes problems.
  • Don’t put out your slide. Again, sometimes parking at truck stops is at a premium. Your slide takes up space and calls attention to you. Look at the image above.  There’s a good chance a truck might take your slide out if it’s extended!
  • Don’t dump your trash or tanks, or grill, or put down jacks, or be noisy. Be a good neighbor.
  • Don’t stay if you feel unsafe. Trust your instinct and move on.
  • Don’t park in a long space meant for big-rigs; again, even if the lot is half empty, these are meant for big trucks only, and you may take a spot a tired trucker needs to pull into.
  • Don’t assume it’s okay to park if your unsure; ask inside.
I’ve had great experiences staying overnight in my RV at truck stops.

Yes, the trucks come and go and rumble, but I don’t mind. I put on some noise cancelling headphones and sleep fine. Of course, a truck stop is not my first choice; but, if I’m too tired to keep driving, or the camping spot I was working on didn’t work out, I know on some local highway there is probably a truck stop I can safely call home for the night.

There are few better ways to explore America’s open roads, scenic byways and vast national parks than in an RV. Unless, that is, other people turn up with the same idea. Thankfully, the USA is a huge country and one with enough epic views and tucked-away places to go around. Follow the irresistible call of the road with these incredible places to spend a night under the stars or just pull over, kick back and gawp at the scenery for a while.

We contacted Geico through our roadside assistance and they called us back after twenty minutes to say they couldn’t find anyone and for us to find someone and they would reimburse us. We didn’t know the area so we called the first person on Google near us. They estimated it would take 60-90 minutes. Two hours later and they still weren’t there but Dave had seen us on the way to a different job and so he circled back around and came to our rescue! The tire was fixed in less than ten minutes and we were back on our way. We will be saving his card since we travel I-17 a lot with our camper. Will recommend to anyone! Hello, this is to let everyone know that Robin the bartender at the searchlight location is a god sent angel.she needs to be recognized for how she went well out of her way to save my life and possibly other lives on the hwy that day. I was having a stroke and did not realize it. I stop in to say hi on every trip since the shooting in Las Vegas because we both had common ties to the event.on this day when I came inside and sat down Robin noticed immediately that something was bad wrong and she wasted no time jumping into action and getting me the help I needed while continuing to take care of her customers and keep the situation calm she made sure I stayed off the road as I was on my way to Las Vegas. She got the paramedics there right away.bottom line is I had 3 strokes and had 2 blood clots in my lungs, 4 days in hospital. Robin, I thank you from the bottom of my heart for saving my life that day. I am with my kids now going through therapy and as soon as I am able I will come in and give you a very big hug.it is so nice to have people like you in this world. Thank you so much, Bret johnson Posted for location: #11839 - SEARCHLIGHT TRUCK STOP [SEARCHLIGHT, NV 89046]

Great company with excellent driver's. This company really knows how to treat customers Posted for location: #48024 - LENT'S TOWING & RECOVERY, INC. [BENTON, KY ]

On Sunday December 15th 2019 Greenwood Fire & Rescue along with several other agencies worked an accident scene for over 5 hours just east of the 420 interchange. The Cubbys served as a staging point to pick up stranded passengers. They welcomed everyone with open arms and were good enough to also provide some food for several volunteers that had missed lunch. Thanks for being a huge behind the scenes supporter of all the local volunteers and their operations!! Posted for location: #701 - CUBBY'S GREENWOOD TRAVEL PLAZA [GREENWOOD, NE 68366]

I was so impressed by Cowboy's Roadside Service. The serpentine belt came off my daugter's engine because a pully broke and my brother suggested I find a roadside mechanic instead of having it towed and then paying a mechanic on top of that. We did have to wait our turn, but that wasn't very long and he was so nice. He had to go to 2 different stores to find our part, but returned shortly and quickly fixed the problem. We were so grateful for his help. I highly recommend these guys! Posted for location: #30990 - COWBOY'S ROADSIDE SERVICE, INC. [SPRINGVILLE, UT ]

Overnight RV Parking at Love’s Travel Stops

By Roadtrippers

While overnight camping is an option at select stores and restaurants across the U.S., Love’s Travel Stops is making it more comfortable and convenient than ever before. Love’s operates approximately 600 gas stations in more than 40 states. In recent years, the company has been adding dedicated RV parking, as well as campsites with hookups, to several locations.

What is it like to camp at a Love’s Travel Stop? Like other businesses, this is a non-traditional camping experience. Stars are replaced with bright lights and flickering neon signs, and instead of chirping crickets, you fall asleep to the sound of rumbling trucks. However, if you adjust your expectations, staying at a Love’s Travel Stop might be a good option, especially if you’re looking for an overnight resting point instead of a vacation destination. Since Love’s stations are designed for big rig travel, you may find a spacious area for maneuvering, as well as many on-site amenities, including gas, groceries, restaurants, and more.

Related Overnight RV Parking at Truck Stops

Not all Love’s locations have dedicated RV parking spots for overnight stays, but most do permit campers. More than 20 locations have RV hookups, and even more offer dump stations and other conveniences RVers might appreciate. Like any other business, you should always call ahead to verify availability and permission.

A truck and travel trailer are parked in a paved spot with electrical hookups.

What to Know About RV Parking at Love’s Travel Stops

Love’s Travel Stops offers RV parking in several forms:

RV parking spaces : These may be used for free overnight stays and do not provide hookups.

Love’s RV hookup locations : These locations provide dedicated campsites offering partial or full hookups for a fee. Prices range from $32 to $47 a night at select locations .

Related What You Need to Know About Camping at a Love’s Travel Stop With RV Hookups

Love’s RV Stops : Designed with more campground-style amenities, these locations offer communal fire pits, laundry facilities, covered pavilions, playgrounds, and more for a fee. Pricing ranges from $45 to $55 a night. As of 2022, the Love’s in Cordell, Georgia , is the first—and only—to have this designation.

What You Should Know Before Parking at Love’s Travel Stops

  • Verify with the Love’s store that overnight stays are allowed, and inquire about the specific location and rules.
  • Some Love’s locations have dedicated spots for RV parking, while others allow RVs to park in the tractor-trailer parking spots. You may hear truck engines idling overnight, as the truck drivers run their heat, A/C, and other appliances off the engine.
  • Be aware that professional truck drivers may have limited options for parking their rigs for their mandated rest periods. You should avoid taking up truck spots with your RV whenever possible. You might unwittingly catch some criticism while parking in these areas, especially if the lot is full.
  • Love’s Travel Stops operate 24 hours a day and are usually located near busy highways. Expect some traffic, road noise, and bright lights.
  • Staying at a Love’s provides access to all of the amenities located on-site, including the convenience store and gas station. You may find propane refills, dump stations, ice, laundry facilities, showers, dog runs, and more.

Common Questions About Love’s Travel Stops and RVing

Start by searching for RV-friendly Love’s Travel Stops locations on Roadtrippers. It’s recommended to also verify with the location that overnight parking is permitted before settling in your rig.

If you have permission from a manager or employee at the location and are parked in an appropriate spot, you may sleep in a Love’s parking lot.

Love’s offers hookups at more than 20 designated locations . You may find full and partial hookups for a fee.

While generally designed for overnight stays, according to Love’s, you may reserve a site at one of their RV hookup locations for up to 29 days. You may also check with the individual location to see if extended stays are allowed.

3 day stop en route to Moscow - where would you go?

Hi everyone,

I am tentatively planning to join my parents who are visiting our relatives in Russia either in late July or in August. What really sparked my interest in this trip (aside from seeing family and introducing my husband to them, of course) was using this as an excuse for a quick stop elsewhere in Europe. I was thinking that since there are no direct flights from Seattle to Moscow anymore, my husband and I could start the trip by flying to a European destination, staying there for 3-4 days (not including travel days), and then continuing to Russia.

So far, my list of potential destinations includes: Dublin, Paris, Stockholm, London, and Prague. These are listed in my current order of preference, and it should be noted that we have already been to London and Prague. We are in our late 20s, more city oriented (but don't mind a day trip to the countryside), and mostly interested in live music, architecture, museums, markets, as well as tasting plenty of local food and beer.

If you were to recommend spending a few days in one of these cities, which would you choose? Or do you have any other suggestions with easy-ish transfer to Moscow (no more than 1 layover)? Thanks in advance!

I recommend Paris based on your preferences especially if you have never been there. I was there for the 3rd time last September and never tired of it. I am sure many will agree! Wherever you decide will be awesome. It is Europe after all!!

We have lived in London, Paris and Prague and I would recommend Prague for the live music, architecture (the city is like an art museum), markets, museums, great good, and its unique look and history. On the other hand, why not try St. Petersburg, Russia since you already have permission to enter the country? It is a gorgeous city and the Hermitage is even better than the Louvre (I love both). This is an easy transfer to Moscow for sure.

Out of your 5 cities there are direct flights from Seattle to London and Paris. You already have been to London. Your choice is easy - Paris. My educated guess is that there is a direct flight from Paris to Moscow.

Direct Flight Seattle Stockholm 1 day, take night ferry to Helsinki 1 day, take train to St Petersburg 1 day...fly, bus or train to Moscow.

If you've never been, you should go to Paris!

I've been to the places you listed, and while I'm glad to have seen all of them, I regret not going to Prague sooner. In my many years of travel, it exceeded my expectations - along with the other places in Czech Republic. I think our River Cruise from Moscow to St. Petersburg had a flight via either Copenhagen or Stockholm, both of which would be great visits.

Be aware of European vacations in August.

Kathleen has really good idea. Unfortunately there is no direct flight to Stockholm from Seattle. But you can do it with one change. That ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki is exciting. Then train from Helsinki to St. Petersburg. I would not recommend bus from S.P. to Moscow. It takes too long. Take fast train Sapsan (about 4 hours). It is expensive but worth it. Other trains take 8 to 10 hours. In that case take overnight sleeping compartment but it is not much cheaper than Sapsan. This could be your alternative to Paris.

In July, my first choice would be Stockholm. The Swedish summer is just beautiful. There is lots to do in Stockholm. The Vasa Museum is one of a kind. The Stadshuset (where the Nobel Prize is awarded) has a great tour. Good food markets are at Hötorget's Saluhallen (modern, ethnic, less expensive) and Östermalms Saluhallen (traditional, more expensive, and beautiful). There are a number of music venues. The only downside is that beer is expensive. If you take the ferry to Helsinki, you will find cheap beer on the ferry.

You could fly to Stockholm and then fly to Moscow OR overnight ferry from Stockholm to Helsinki. Spend the day there (leave luggage at locker in train station before Taking the overnight Ferry (St Peter Line) to St Petersburg. The St Peter Line goes every other day). Spend a couple of nights there before taking the train to Moscow.

Last summer, I traveled Helsinki - St Petersburg - Helsinki - Stockholm using the ferries, so feel free to PM me if you have questions. I also lived in Stockholm for a couple of years, so am a bit biased :)

Thanks for the feedback, everyone! For the record, while I would love to visit St. Petersburg (I feel like a bad Russian person having never been there), I don't think it's the right fit for this particular trip, since the whole idea is to take advantage of there being no direct flights to Russia and making an extended layover somewhere in Europe.

I have to say, I'm a little surprised at the recommendations for Stockholm/Helsinki/St. Petersburg itinerary, given this forum's propensity to advise against such fast-paced trips! It actually sounds amazing, but I think I'd prefer to stretch that trip into at least a couple of days in each place :)

I am definitely being swayed in the direction of Paris at the moment! Neither of us ever had a strong interest in specifically visiting Paris, but with direct flights to/from Moscow, this seems like the perfect opportunity to check it out and maybe fall in love with it the way everyone else seems to be! Although I am still kind of attached to the idea of checking out Dublin or having the excuse to drag my husband back to London so soon after our last trip.

These are the best scenic family road trips for families, from a parent and travel expert who's been to all 50 states.

  • I'm a travel expert, and I've been to all 50 states.
  • I love taking road trips with my family. We get to see a lot of different things on one trip.
  • These are my top three favorite routes for families traveling in the United States.

Insider Today

Road trips are the ultimate symbol of freedom, discovery, and the boundless beauty of the US. On many such trips with my family, it has not been just the destinations but also the journey that holds the magic; the open road itself becomes a vehicle for family memories and shared experiences.

Over my life, I've traversed all 50 states , both with my family while growing up and now with my husband and kids, and I've reveled in the splendor of countless scenic highways and breathtaking byways. As a travel expert, I believe these three incredible routes are the best if you're looking to go on an amazing road trip experience with your own family.

Cruise up (or down) California's Pacific Coast Highway

Family travelers looking for a truly magical journey need to look no further than the Pacific Coast Highway or California State Route 1. At about 650 miles, it's the longest route in California and the second longest in the US. Beginning in the charming seaside town of Dana Point, just outside Los Angeles, and winding up to San Francisco (or vice versa), this spectacular drive offers an endless array of jaw-dropping coastal vistas, sun-soaked beaches, and must-see stops.

As you travel north to Santa Barbara, stop at the Santa Barbara Zoo and take in unobstructed sunset vistas at Ellwood Mesa. Continue to San Luis Obispo, where you can choose from 65 hiking trails, explore the children's museum, or stroll through the infamous Bubblegum Alley. And don't miss out on other notable destinations like Big Sur, the charming seaside town of Carmel-by-the-Sea and its crescent-shaped beaches and storybook-like architecture, or Monterey, home to the world-renowned Monterey Bay Aquarium .

Once you reach San Francisco, take an exciting ride on the city's famous cable cars. Then visit the California Academy of Sciences, an all-in-one planetarium, aquarium, and natural history museum in Golden Gate Park. And no matter how often you visit San Francisco , you must visit the Golden Gate Bridge, on foot or at vantage points like Battery Spencer or Fort Point.

Travel the Blue Ridge Parkway from Virginia to North Carolina

The Blue Ridge Parkway, affectionately known as "America's Favorite Drive," meanders nearly 500 miles through Virginia and North Carolina. Connecting Shenandoah National Park to the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, this scenic route boasts 272 magnificent overlooks and more than 100 hiking trails , including the famed Crabtree Falls.

Roanoke, the largest city along the Parkway, offers families a multitude of outdoorsy activities, like mountain biking at Explore Park and hiking to the famous Roanoke Star in Mill Mountain Park. A bit farther south, near Meadows of Dan, VA, my family had a wonderful time at Primland Resort. We stayed in one of its 22 spacious lodge suites; they also offer unique treehouses and villas, an observatory for stargazing, guided nature walks, thrilling ATV rides, and a fun-filled game room .

Near the end of the Parkway lies the mountain town of Asheville, which is close to several family-friendly hiking trails , including Graveyard Fields. There, my family enjoyed panoramic viewpoints, toured the iconic Biltmore Estate, and visited the River Arts District, Asheville Museum of Science, and North Carolina Arboretum.

The centrally located Grand Bohemian Asheville, located next to the Biltmore Estate, is ideal for exploring the city's bustling downtown area, which is known for its arts, crafts, and delicious local cuisine. The region also has several excellent glamping options, including the cabins at Asheville Glamping.

Take a road trip through Arizona

From majestic mountains to captivating canyons, Arizona's glorious scenery cannot be fully realized by visiting just one destination. You must explore it through the open road. Start your journey in the Phoenix area, which has an abundance of kid-friendly attractions, like Legoland Discovery Center, Butterfly Wonderland, and the i.d.e.a. Museum.

As you venture just two hours north, stop in Sedona to explore the vibrant art scene and mesmerizing red rock formations. Admire the area's stunning beauty on a thrilling Pink Jeep Tour , and retire to campgrounds like Chavez Crossing RV Park and Rancho Sedona RV Park. Another economical accommodation option is the two-bedroom suites at Los Abrigados Resort and Spa. Families looking to splurge should stay at the Enchantment Resort in Boynton Canyon for relaxation and endless family-friendly activities, including hiking, stargazing, and cultural activities at Camp Coyote.

Spend several days exploring the west, north, and south rims of the Grand Canyon, marveling at panoramic vistas at the Skywalk at Grand Canyon West, and kid-friendly hiking trails, like the 1.8-mile South Kaibab Trail to Ooh Aah Point. For a rush of adrenaline, set out on a whitewater rafting excursion with companies like Advantage Grand Canyon.

To make the most of your time, pitch a tent at one of six campgrounds within Grand Canyon National Park, reserve an RV spot at Trailer Village, or stay at one of the nearby hotels like El Tovar Hotel, Under Canvas Grand Canyon, and the historic Grand Canyon Railway Hotel in Williams, where you can take a fabulous train ride to the canyon's South Rim.

Last but certainly not least is a trip to Page, where short hikes lead to the marvelous Antelope Canyon and Horseshoe Bend. Families can also take a boat cruise on Lake Powell and visit the Glen Canyon Dam.

Subway Strays: The Dogs of Moscow’s Metro

rv travel stops

Despite the collapse of the Soviet Union, the stray dogs in Moscow have a surprisingly well-documented history which animal behaviorists have been paying close attention to for several decades. During the Soviet period in Russia the packs of wild (or stray) dogs in were regulated. Only the clever canines who learned to stay in isolation were able to survive. Usually, these dogs would remain on the outskirts of the city hunting in wild packs, as the living in the city was dangerous and food scarce.  After the fall of the Soviet Union quality of life in Russia began to slowly improve and with it more street vendors and food collecting in busy neighborhoods. This began to bring some the stray dogs out of the suburbs into the city.

Today, there are nearly 35,000 stray dogs that call Moscow home. Out of these 35,000 stray dogs there are about 500 that have taken to living underground. Out of these dogs, there are a few that have started thinking outside the box and inside the boxcar. They have begun the slow move underground to stay out of the cold (Russian winters reach an average of -5 degrees every day). Many of the Russian commuters embraced the dog’s underground migration by petting them or giving them food.

Though these claims may seem like the made up type of internet misinformation that we have learned to be skeptical of these days, it is actually sourced to a Russian biologist by the name of  Dr. Andrey Poyarkov , a highly regarded scientist in his field of study. As it turns out Poyarkov has been studying these dogs for the last thirty years and told news sources back in 2010 that he suspected a small fraction of these underground dogs had actually learned to use the subway in order to beg for food in bustling urban areas where food is more plentiful.

Andrei Neuronov , an animal behaviorist, says much like you train your dogs at home to respond to verbal commands like “sit” or “stay,” the Moscow metro dogs are using audio cues from the subway stops they have learned. The dogs memorize the names of the stops to navigate the subway systems in order to take them to heavily populated places during the day and get food.  Then, they return to their more secluded corners of the suburbs at night where they are less likely to be bothered by people.  Here is a story ABC did back in 2011, talking about this very thing.

Do you have any information on how to help these dogs?  Please share and comment below.
