Sailing Raja Ampat: Explore the Eden of biodiversity

Sailing in Raja Ampat takes you to one of the most biodiverse places on Earth. Located in the center of the Coral Triangle, the region is one of the most beautiful and enchanting sailing destinations on the planet. The Raja Ampat archipelago consists of over 1,500 islands surrounding the four main islands; Misool, Salawati, Batanta, and Waigeo.

The sheer abundance of marine life, stunning landscapes, and perfect beaches turn Raja Ampat into a paradise. Discovering this paradise onboard a modern Phinisi yacht is not only a memorable holiday experience, but a luxury adventure that connects you with nature in the most beautiful way. From snorkeling and diving to land expeditions and birdwatching, Raja Ampat sailing trips offer a wide range of activities suitable for families, couples, and solo adventurers.

Snorkeling during your Sailing Trip in Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat features some of the world’s best dive sites, but since most marine life just can be found below the surface, the region has become the ultimate playground for snorkelers . The shallow and crystal-clear waters are the perfect environment for adults and children who just want to immerse themselves in the serenity and beauty of another world. Hidden lagoons, colorful reefs and narrow channels offer world-class snorkeling. Manta Rays, turtles, and friendly reef sharks are among the many species that can be encountered while gently drifting on the ocean’s surface. In addition, most of the hand-picked Phinisi yachts in our selection offer various water activities, including stand-up paddleboarding and sea kayaking.

Snorkelling Expeditions in Raja Ampat are fun for the entire family

Diving on a Raja Ampat Sailing Holiday

Raja Ampat is home to more than 1,600 fish species, 75% of the world’s known coral species, 6 of the 7 known species of vulnerable to critically endangered sea turtles, and 17 known species of marine mammals. Hence, the expression “frontier diving” is often used when diving and sailing in Raja Ampat. The enormous variety of life in the ocean can be staggering and even overwhelming. Some areas are home to enormous schools of fish and sightings of sharks, including wobbegongs, are common. And if you are lucky, you will even spot a pod of dolphins in the water. Keep your eyes open!

Raja Ampat features a vast variety of dive sites , suitable for beginners and advanced divers alike. Walls and slopes, plenty of passages, canyons, caves, underwater ridges and  WWII wrecks provide magical opportunities for every passionate diver. Exceptional muck diving sites are close to jetties and black sandy slopes. Some sites have strong currents and are only recommended for advanced divers. However, there are many protected lagoons for beginners. Deciding to go on a private boat trip will give you the possibility to customize your charter itinerary and day-to-day activities according to your wishes.

World-class dive sites await during a sailing adventure in Raja Ampat

The many faces of Raja Ampat

Stunning karst limestone formations, lush jungles, remote beaches, turquoise waters, unique fish and bird species are just a few faces of this exceptional region.

Waigeo - the heart of Raja Ampat

Waigeo is the largest of the four main islands and offers plenty of snorkeling and diving opportunities. The island, which is the easiest to access in the Raja Ampat archipelago, is the perfect starting point for a Raja Ampat sailing trip. There are several areas and smaller islands around Waigeo including Aljui Bay and Yeben in the West, Wofu Island towards the north, Gam and Yanggefo toward the south, and the famous Dampier Strait and Mansuar. Waigeo offers a broad range of activities and sites in a relatively small area. Scuba diving , birdwatching , a pearl farm, flying foxes, local villages, pristine beaches, and lagoons for kayaking. Shorter Raja Ampat sailing adventures will focus on the land & sea sites of Waigeo.

Raja Ampat is the perfect place for your romantic getaway on a private yacht

Dampier Strait in Raja Ampat

The islands of Waigeo and Gam to the north and Batanta to the south form the Dampier Strait, named after the British adventurer William Dampier, who first sailed through it in 1686. In the middle of this strait lies Mansuar Island and Kri Island. The nutrient-rich waters around these islands host an abundance of marine life and feature some of the most famous scuba diving in Raja Ampat including Blue Magic, Cape Kri, and Sardine Reef. On land, tropical and endemic birds populate the lush jungles and enchant the close by bays and anchorages with their beautiful songs.

Batanta Island

The island of Batanta is famous for its hidden waterfalls and jungle treks. The lush green scenery is the perfect backdrop for family adventures and birding tours. Some of the bird species that call the island home include Hornbills, Palm Cockatoos, and various sea eagles. The waters around Batanta feature spectacular diving and snorkeling opportunities. The chances of spotting manta rays and other pealagic species is very here in that area.

There are many things you can do in Raja Ampat

Wayag Island

Wayag Island is home to the famous and iconic views of Raja Ampat. The area is a paradise for photographers and features the mushroom-shaped limestone domes, draped in flora surrounded by waters of blue and green. The area of Wayag offers stunning viewpoints, hidden coves, and magical lagoons. Grabbing one of the paddleboards or kayaks is highly recommended! As with the other areas of Raja Ampat, divers and snorkelers will be taken away by the sheer beauty of the underwater world.

Misool is a stunning archipelago located in the southern part of Raja Ampat, a renowned luxury cruise destination in Indonesia. The area features stunning landscapes, paradise-like beaches, and vibrant coral reefs. Misool area is a popular destination for private and customized boat charters , as it offers the perfect blend of tranquility, natural beauty, and unparalleled marine biodiversity. Divers and snorkelers will be delighted by Misool’s diverse underwater world.

Misool also has a rich cultural heritage, with many local fishing villages located around the islands. Visitors can learn about the customs and traditions of the locals, watch their hand weaving or batik making, or try local delicacies like various seafood and spicy sambal.

Stunning viewpoints of Raja Ampat

The 3rd largest island of Raja Ampat, Salawati is a serene destination for those looking to unwind and relax. The island boasts stunning beaches, crystal clear waters, and a thriving marine ecosystem, making it a popular destination for snorkeling and diving enthusiasts. The island is home to a small population of indigenous people, who have preserved their traditional way of life and cultural heritage. Salawati is also known for its unique birdlife, with various species that can be spotted in the island’s lush forests. Scuba diving & snorkelling

The real beauty of Raja Ampat is its remoteness, boasting some of Indonesia’s most pristine reefs, home to everything from pygmy seahorses to wobbegong sharks. The underwater scenery rivals the views above of karst islands rising straight out of the aquamarine waters.

Paddleboarding

For the bold and the adventurous, paddleboarding evokes a sense of immersive exploration unlike any other out there. Take it up a notch for a night journey. It heightens the senses in a way few others will get to experience.

Raja Ampat’s waters are remote, protected, and biologically productive, making it one of the best places to encounter lush coral walls that gradually drop to 900 feet. The serene turquoise waters surrounding the islands hold a riot of colour just below the surface. Nestled in the heart of the Coral Triangle, one of the most biodiverse and cardinal marine epicentres in the world, Raja Ampat offers an abundance of natural beauty.

With about three-quarters of the world’s coral species found in Raja Ampat, it is one of the best places to encounter an intricate tapestry of bountiful marine life. It truly is no surprise that this area is often referred to as the ‘jewel in the crown’ of this region because of the astounding range of fish and coral species found here, with more than 300 coral species on record. An underwater wonderland awaits.

sailing trip raja ampat

The interior of the island is home to lush forests, dense jungle, intricate mangroves, palm-fringed coastlines and powdered white beaches. The East and West of the region are dominated by a maze of arresting limestone pinnacles that rise straight out of the ocean, each covered in vegetation, like something from Avatar’s Pandora.

Spend some time out of the water and trek through the completely untouched forests, packed with unique flora and fauna, all unique to this region of the world. Indonesia does not only have the largest biodiversity of marine species, but is also known for having more than an estimated 23% of the world’s mangroves along its coastlines, which makes up about 3 million hectares of mangrove forest.

Raja Ampat: Home to the world’s most diverse underwater habitats

sailing trip raja ampat

Onboard our Raja Ampat luxury cruise, sail across mesmerizing turquoise and blue waters which constantly jostle for your attention and beckon you to dive down and under. Located in the heart of the Coral Triangle, the 20,000 square mile region is home to every kind of underwater habitat imaginable; pristine reef flats, secret bays, swift channels, deep drop-offs, shallow seamounts, mangroves, marine lakes, and protected coral gardens.   Raja Ampat is a thriving subterranean metropolis that houses more than 1,300 species of tropical marine fish (about 50% of all known species) and more than 600 species of coral (nearly 75% of all known species of reef-building corals). This is in addition to manta rays, rare sea turtle species and schooling hammerheads. Cape Kri in the Dampier Strait notably holds the world record for the most number of species counted in a single dive (374 in total).

Raja Ampat: Witness the cradle of life between two major oceans

sailing trip raja ampat

However, Raja Ampat’s underwater splendor isn’t defined by sheer numbers alone. Our Raja Ampat luxury cruise route also happens to be in the middle of a major cetacean migration route and aggregation site where various whales and dolphin species have been sighted.   Of great significance is also the fact that the region is the meeting point of the Indian and the Pacific Ocean called the Indonesian Throughflow. There’s a six-inch (15cm) average height difference between these two oceans, creating an immense exchange of water carrying millions of aquatic eggs and larvae that either spawn to life or serve as a vital source of food for other marine animals.   At the same time, the cooler water from deep-sea trenches and basins plays a part in Raja Ampat’s stunning biodiversity. These environments offer shelter from the glacial water of the ice ages, and today offer natural protection against rising sea temperatures that have resulted in the bleaching of other relatively unprotected coral habitats including the Great Barrier Reef and the Maldives. Endowed with natural geological defenses, Raja Ampat is truly Mother Nature’s last frontier.   Aqua Expeditions’ Raja Ampat cruise aboard Aqua Blu sails every year from December through to February. The cruise sets sail on 7-night itineraries, departing from the city of Sorong.   Come sail with us on Aqua Blu and experience one of the world’s most rewarding marine expeditions.

A day to day guide

A tour leader will meet you at the airport and take you to the boat in the Indonesian city of Sorong on the West coast of the island of West Papau. Once you’ve settled in, it’s time to set course for the southernmost islands of the Raja Ampat National Park. After an alfresco lunch, guests can enjoy the first swim and snorkel through the coral reef before we continue to our overnight anchorage. Enjoy pre-dinner cocktails as the sun goes down and the crew continue cruising the boat through the night.

Wake up on the east side of the Misool archipelago, a picturesque jungle covered chain of islands. Limestone inlets with spectacular coral reefs offer some fantastic snorkelling opportunities. Spend the day exploring this archipelago, snorkelling, swimming and kayaking in crystal clear waters. Explore ashore with some island trekking or relax on board with a book before a quiet night under a starry sky.

After an early breakfast, guest can start the day with a swim and snorkel through the fascinating dome-roofed sea cave with giant stalagmites and stalactites. Next, explore the mysterious stingless jellyfish lake, one of only 20 in the world where these incredible creatures live. Visit the eery skull cairns in sea-cave cemeteries and prehistoric cave painting estimated to be between 3000 – 5000 years old, depicting various human figures, fish and flowers.

Rise early to wander through the misty forest to try and spot the Lesser Birds of Paradise. A wild and unforgettable experience for those lucky enough to spot them dancing in the trees. Spend the afternoon with some underwater snorkelling exploration as we discover some of the best coral reefs in the world before watching the sunset on the horizon as the boat makes it way to Batanta island.

The island of Batanta offers a change of scenery and chance to stretch our legs with an adventurous jungle trek teeming with native birds, butterflies and insects. Starting in a local village, our guides will lead the way through the forest, passing spectacular waterfalls that are perfect for a swim. Head back to the boat for a freshly cooked lunch where a relaxed afternoon awaits. Make use of the paddle-boards, explore the water and just relax on board, the choice is yours.

Today sees a visit to a local pearl farm into a protected deep water cove where we can watch how this precious commodity is produced and harvested. Pearling is an important industry here and provides employment for many local people. Spend the afternoon snorkelling and kayaking amongst three small islands linked together by some pristine coral reefs, or you can simply choose to relax on the beach

After breakfast on board, spend the morning exploring the limestone islands filled with coves and beautiful reef. A short walk ashore sees a climb to a vantage point where there are stunning views out across the islands. Enjoy lunch underway as Katharina heads to a small island nestled between Gam and Mansuar where the currents bring rich nutrients to the coral reefs. There are three famous jetties here offering magical underwater scenery. Schools of fish, shy black tip reef shark, elegant spade-fish and the magnificent giant clams.

The centre of the Raja Ampat National Park stores many magical wonders. Start in the local village on the Mansuar island where sustainability is at the heart of life here. Education centres, solar powered street lights and sustainable fishing practices are bound by the community spirit here. The house reef offers abundant marine life where we may get lucky with a sighting of the infamous wobbegong shark.

Another underwater adventure awaits in the afternoon on the eastern point of Mansuar. Famous for its schools of fish, the hump-head wrasse and giant schools of Trevalley swim together with the resident hawksbill turtle. Finish the day with a beach BBQ and fire under the stars with your fellow guests and crew!

Before dawn, begin your trek into the rainforest in search of the Red Bird of Paradise – if we are lucky, we should be able to witness the incredible mating displays in the canopy of the rainforest – a true “David Attenborough moment”. Afterwards, walk through the colourful local village and meet the wonderful people who call this paradise home and learn how they live their daily lives. Back on the boat, snorkel the famous wall on the east of Gam island before Katharina sails overnight to an island nearby Sorong.

We will wake up anchored in Sorong and have one last hearty breakfast on board of the Katharina before venturing on our very last adventure in the Doom Island with traditional transportation called Becak. Bid farewell to the ship and crew as you head ashore for your airport transfer for onward travel.

Please note that this is a guide as to what to expect from your sailing holiday in Indonesia. With the ever changing wind and tides, flexibility is key. These explorations will always be a definite enhancement to the published itinerary and will be undertaken after discussion and agreement among guests. Ultimately, the boat captains and your tour leader will make decisions to maximise trip safety and your overall enjoyment, so please come prepared to be flexible!

Guest berths: 14 Rig: Gaff Ketch

Built in 1995 on the Indonesian portion on the island of Borneo, Katharina was originally planned for use a commercial freighter but caught the eye of her current owner with her elegant sailing lines and sleek hull shape.

They saw her transformation into a charter vessel as an exercise to conserve her Indonesian authenticity and in 2014, employed local craftsmen to complete a beautiful interior refit. Working alongside her sister ship Ombak Putih , (larger but equally as beautiful!), they are both fine examples of some of the few original boats that still sail these waters.

Now led by Captain Ferdi, Katharina takes guests on skippered sailing holidays to explore the cultural heritage, natural wonders and wildlife of the Indonesian islands.

LAMIMA Luxury Sailing Yacht Charter

The Majestic Raja Ampat

by LAMIMA | May 9, 2019 | Exotic Destinations , Indonesia Yacht Charter Guide

A magical place where one can literally get lost in nature, Raja Ampat or ‘The Four Kings’ is a group of islands that offers the richest marine biodiversity on the planet, beautiful caves, pristine beaches with crystal clear water, dramatic limestones, jaw-dropping waterfalls, hidden bays, sheltered blue lagoons, rainforest, and stunning view from one of the islands’ peak.

Raja Ampat is also home to the infamous Birds of Paradise , who graces bird watchers with their distinct beauty and dance every morning at sunrise; before leaving their home trees for food. Being part of the Coral Triangle, 75% of known coral species recorded are found in Raja Ampat and more than 1400 species of reef fish swim thru the waters of Raja Ampat along with Manta Rays, White Tip Reef Shark, Black Tip Reef Shark, and other marine creatures.

The four main islands of Raja Ampat are Misool, Salawati, Waigeo, and Batanta islands . These islands have their distinct charm that attracts discerning travelers who want a taste of cultural immersion, remote islands not frequented by many tourists, and the purest form of preserved culture.

Batanta Island is the smallest among the four islands. It is the perfect introduction to the group of islands in Raja Ampat as its beautiful rainforest and colorful reef are a sight to behold. The dense jungle interior of Batanta is teeming with birdlife, fruit bat, crocodile monitor, wild boar with available trails for trekking; while the pristine coastline and calm bays are a good dwelling for some marine life such as dugongs.

Birds-Of-Paradise-LAMIMA-Luxury-Sailing-Yacht-Charter

Misool is a densely forested island that offers white sand beaches with turquoise waters, mangrove swamps, caves, and a maze of limestone pinnacles. Be surprised by a lake full of jellyfish that do not sting, visit several lagoons in a stand-up paddleboard, be amazed by the petroglyphs in cave walls, or immerse in the local village where people are warm and welcoming.

If you’re dreaming of a remote island where peace and quiet exists, then you’ll find it in Salawati . Salawati Island is surrounded by lush green plants with pristine and calm waters and white sand beaches. Salawati is a refuge to wild animals, where they live freely without being disturbed. Diving and snorkeling are two common activities enjoyed by travelers here. A beach barbecue can also be arranged and enjoyed in this serene island.

Waigeo is the largest among the four main islands of Raja Ampat, this is where the capital is, Wasai. The island has the most number of population and is the easiest island to reach by public transportation. The island has a jungle interior and offers a variety of activity such as bird watching, deep sea diving, scenic bays with towering cliffs, and surfing.

Thrilling Activities in Raja Ampat

A never-ending life exploration can be done in Raja Ampat. Exciting activities that can’t be experienced in other parts of the world awaits the discerning traveler. Kayaking in the hidden mangroves, paddle boarding to a cave, trekking to a forest, diving and snorkeling to the crystal clear waters, surfing, wakeboarding, and bird watching (the birds of paradise) are few of the activities that leave travelers amazed.

The Local Culture

Papuans are hospitable, warm, and welcoming by nature. As you roam around the islands of Raja Ampat, you will see the contagious, warm smiles and welcoming attitude of the locals, especially the kids who never tire of plastering a smile to tourists. If you want to immerse to the local way of living, you can visit Arborek Village and be one with the locals. Be entertained by traditional welcome dances as you set foot on their village and let your heart skip a beat as they begin singing Papuan folk songs.

The Best Way To Experience Raja Ampat

Having a vast area to visit, the best way to explore Raja Ampat is by boat. Liveaboards is the best option in hopping from one island to another. Not only do travelers have a moving hotel with changing scenic views each day, but they also get to explore hard to reach areas and small islets scattered all over Raja Ampat.

Travelers can literally enjoy an island all to themselves since Raja Ampat have so much to offer and is too big to get crowded. This means enjoying the scenic views both under and above the water and exploring the rainforest. Indeed, Raja Ampat is for divers and nature lovers who seek to witness a different world where nature is untouched, local tribes are pleasantly welcoming people who chose to live in the modern world, and coexistence of humans and wildlife are highly respected.

How To Get To Raja Ampat

Sorong is the gateway to the majestic paradise of Raja Ampat. You can fly from Jakarta, Bali, Malaysia, or even Singapore going to Sorong Airport. Depending on the kind of transfer and itinerary you had, you can take a ferry from the port of Sorong to your island destination or from Sorong Airport, you will be transferred by a private vehicle to a speed boat which will bring you to the yacht charter you booked and your exploration to the islands begin.

Sail in Indonesian renowned indigenous wooden sailing vessel

One of Papua diving liveaboard unique features is to be able to sail in a Phinisi, an authentic Indonesian sailing vessel created by one of the local tribes hundreds of years ago. Phinisi is a traditional Indonesian boat that originated from the well-known ethnic group of Bugis of South Sulawesi. This native Indonesian boat is a masterpiece among sailing vessels. They are the lifeline of the economy to the Bugis people of Makassar, as much as they are an important component of transportation.

Papua is a famed destination when it comes to appreciating the full glory of the Indonesian archipelago. However, getting to places in West Papua holiday like the famed Raja Ampat itself takes a long time even when you’re already in the country. Getting from one spot to another takes time, as the areas worth visiting are numerous and spread across such a large area. This is where discovering Papua through the luxury liveaboards Indonesia, especially on a phinisi, tops many other options. Aside from being able to discover the astounding wonders of Indonesia, Papua liveaboard or Papua diving cruise is an excellent way to experience the Phinisi of today.

A jewel of Indonesia

Dine in a breathtaking 360° view of the sea and archipelagic wonders.

Dining in Papua diving cruise will be a purely delightful activity, every single day. You’ll look forward to savouring your meals when you’re taking a break from your Raja Ampat diving and once you have finished your activity for the day.

Dining in Papua diving liveaboard is enjoyed in a breathtaking environment that you can access at any time of day. Start your day by eating chef-prepared healthy clean food and vegetables and juicy fruits. Enjoy a clear, brilliant view of the sparkling ocean surface during your lunch. Watch the last bit of the sun rays as dinner is served. In the tropical country of Indonesia, it’s not rare that at 7 pm, you can still catch the shades of tangerine and lilac as the last rays of sun rays dissipate.

Sail, dive, explore

Papua diving cruise opens a door to majestic underwater scenes. The Coral triangle houses an astonishing number of corals—making it the area with the most fascinating underwater scene on earth. Over 500 species of corals live in the Coral Triangle; the biggest there is on earth considering that the area only makes up over 1 percent of the world’s sea area. In comparison, the entire area of the Caribbean has fewer than 70 species of corals.

Papua cruise is an ideal way of exploring every nook and cranny of this miraculous archipelago. You’ll discover a seabed filled with vibrant corals and having to carefully swim-step so that you won’t disturb the walking sharks nearby. Lucky ones will get to experience reef mantas or even the ocean mantas swimming playfully and getting their cleaning rituals. Raja Ampat is truly every diver’s wildest dream and more.

Papua diving liveaboard—Manta rays can be spotted throughout the Indonesian waters; notably in Flores, Bali-Nusa Penida,  and of course, Papua Raja Ampat. Manta rays have been dubbed as the oceans’ gentle giants. These sea angels’ “wings” can reach over 7 meters across or over 20 feet. Despite their flat appearance and their agility in gliding across waters—making it seem as if they are flying—they can weight up to 1,300 kilograms. Mantas are the relatives of sharks. However, unlike their cousins, mantas are mostly harmless to humans. Manta rays have an average of 300 small teeth they use to feed on zooplankton, crustaceans, and other tiny fishes in the oceans. And these teeth are not sufficient to tear human flesh.

If manta rays are your main reason to explore the seas of Papua, then you’re in for the most remarkable experience yet. Opt for an immersive dive cruise or a tailored, dive-intensive liveaboard. As the top scuba diving destination and luxury liveaboard in the world, West Papua diving will not disappoint.

They trust us, we love them

A closer look at these miraculous sea angels

Indonesia is the world largest’s sanctuary for manta rays . However, it used to be the biggest fisheries for both mantas and sharks. While fishing may not be the main destructive factors of many species extinction, this is exactly the case for mantas. Mantas mating is done once every few years, and the baby is conceived for a full year. The entirety of manta’s reproduction cycle takes a great deal of time. It makes these creatures vulnerable to even the slightest threat to their population.

By purchasing a permit (which is usually already included if you go with a Papua diving cruise or liveaboard Indonesia), you’re helping to contribute to the conservation efforts in Raja Ampat Papua. This permit is officially named Tariff to Support Environmental Services. This is a good step taken by the government to discourage mass tourism in Raja Ampat Papua. And it’s an important one to decrease the risk of harm brought by tourism. This helps keep the West Papua and Raja Ampat as pristine and as untarnished as it remains today.

Papua is home to the world’s top diving and snorkeling sites

Experience grandeur of the seas through Papua diving cruise—Dampier Strait of Raja Ampat Papua is another famed Diving cruise Indonesia’s destinations. Dampier Strait is said to be the place where the first Papua scuba diving took place in the 90s. Healthy corals and plentiful nutrients make the seas of Dampier Strait an absolute delight to discover.

Have you ever experienced “fish thunder” during your dive? It is one of the most dramatic experiences you can experience in the Dampier Strait. As hundreds and even thousands of fishes move through the water with impressive speed, a tumultuous sound—fish thunder—can be heard booming in the ocean. It is one of the most peculiar yet strangely fascinating event, one that you can experience through an immersive Papua diving liveaboard.

A sailing trip to Raja Ampat aboard one of the most luxurious charter yachts in the world

Indonesia is so much more than bali and bintangs: duncan madden sets sail for remote raja ampat aboard one of the world's most luxurious charter yachts, by duncan madden.

At 900sq m, Prana by Atzaro is the world’s largest phinisi yacht, and comes complete with a spa and an outdoor cinema.

Published: Tuesday 20th August 2019

Emerging bleary eyed from the cosseting luxury of my cabin to the still dark skies of Raja Ampat in search of mating birds of paradise is a pretty bewildering way to start the day.

Inky black skies are fringed by the soft light of a new dawn and drenched in the kind of heavy morning heat that only proper tropical climates can conjure. The soundtrack is a rhythmic slap of salt water against wooden hull troubled periodically by the caw of an unseen bird swooping through the dark nearby.

My jetlagged senses struggle to align these physical sensations with the time of day and I vaguely recall the journey that brought me to this remotest of oceans on the other side of the world. Somewhere in the back of my befuddled brain I already know this is going to be special.

And it is quite the journey to reach Raja Ampat. Part of Indonesia’s far-flung island chains, its pellucid blue waters fringe the Bird’s Head peninsula on the north-western tip of Papua nearly 2,000 miles east of Jakarta.

Interrupting the 15,000sq mile turquoise seascape are 1,500 picture-postcard islands – mushroom-shaped outcroppings endowed with flawless white beaches, rich tropical forests, rocky precipitous cliffs and glass-still lagoons teeming with more marine life than anywhere else on earth.

A floating teak and ironwood palace serving up 900sq m of cabin, deck, spa, lounge and water sports centre to its guests

Navigating these sublime waters is my home for the week, the Prana by Atzaro. Built and launched last year by the group behind Ibiza’s famed Atzaró hotel, it is the world’s largest phinisi yacht – a floating teak and ironwood palace serving up 900sq m of cabin, deck, spa, lounge and water sports centre to its lucky guests. It was inspired by and built using the traditions of the sea-faring Bugis tribe – a two-masted cargo ketch elevated to something unique by the best craftsmen and every possible mod con.

Climb aboard its sleek wooden deck and (once you’ve despatched with the ice-cold juice you’re duly proffered by the smiling, barefoot crew) you’ll find nine luxurious suites, from cosy arrowhead shaped cabins in the prow to Batavia, the vast master suite at the stern complete with freestanding bath and floor to ceiling windows opening onto a sweeping private terrace.

Day 2 & 3

Banda islands.

We will spend the next two days exploring the Banda Islands, a small group of islands steeped in history, and breathtaking natural beauty. You’ll travel back in time as we sail routes once navigated by European traders. The island of Banda Neira is an open-air museum taking you back to the days of colonial rule. Its historic buildings, once-bustling from the spice trade, are now quiet and waiting to tell their story. We’ll visit Fort Belgica, an impressive stone structure that towers over the island and offering postcard-perfect views of Gunung Api. The neighboring island of Banda Besar, the largest island of the Bandas, was once home to nutmeg plantations, and some still exist to this day. Cool off in the water, as we dive or snorkel the healthy and colorful reefs that surround the islands. We will spend time exploring Palau Ai. Its deep waters and current are perfect for spotting larger marine life – Hammerheads, Silvertip, and Thresher sharks. The gently sloping reef of Batu Udang is an underwater delight, colorful small reef fish dart about the garden of corals. At the end of the day, we’ll return to the boat to enjoy a delicious meal and watch the sunset over an active volcano.

sailing trip raja ampat

Today is yours to enjoy the small island of Koon, the perfect stopping point as we make our way to Misool. In 2011, the waters surrounding the island were closed, allowing time for the reef to regenerate and ensure a healthy underwater habitat will be around for generations to come. The waters are now a magnificent display of marine life, healthy, vibrant reefs filled with hard and soft corals, sponges, sea fans, and abundant small reef fish. A pristine white beach surrounds the island, perfect for relaxing and enjoying a delicious picnic lunch prepared by the crew.

Day 5,6 & 7

Awaken to a glorious sunrise over the waters of Raja Ampat. When you’re ready, join us on deck for a hearty breakfast and enjoy the scenery as the ship nears the island. We will spend the next three days exploring this beautiful playground. One of the large islands that make up ‘The Four  Kings,’ Misool, is a treasure trove for adventurers while its natural beauty emanates tranquility.

Breathtaking beauty is found throughout as the small chain of islands carve-out hidden channels, coves, enchanting heart-shaped lagoons, and an array of secluded beaches. Its famed water holds one of the highest marine biodiversity in the world. Given its rich marine life, Misool is home to world-renowned dive and snorkel sites – Kaleidoscope, Boo Rock, and Gamfi are just a few of remarkable sites that surround the islands. Travel back in time with a visit to Tomolol, where we’ll explore the mysterious Gua Sacral caves, a once burial site of the indigenous Papuans, and remnants of previous burials can be seen to this day. We’ll tender to limestone cliffs for views of ancient rock art, colorful reminders of a time long gone.

While Raja Ampat is best known for its abundant biodiverse marine life, its shores are equally impressive. While Raja Ampat is best known for its abundant biodiverse marine life, its hidden shores are equally impressive. Hidden amongst the tall limestone cliffs are powdery sand beaches that melt into light blue water, inviting us to step ashore and relax in the beauty and tranquility that is Misool.

Penemu & Fam

Today we’ll arrive at the beautiful Penemu Islands, a cluster of small limestone islands surrounded a myriad of blue water. After breakfast, we’ll hike up to the lookout for a breathtaking panoramic view of the surrounding islands and its secluded bay. Afterward, we will delve into the water to explore the fantastic dive and snorkel sites around the islands. From shallow reefs teeming with vibrant marine life to colorful coral-covered walls, the underwater world will not disappoint. Revel in the natural beauty as you kayak through the maze of towering limestone islands or tender to the deeper channels for a chance to see dolphins playing or perhaps whales as they migrate through the region.

sailing trip raja ampat

The Passage, Waigeo

Today we’ll set out before dawn for an opportunity to spot the mystical Red Bird of Paradise. Accompanied by the cruise director, you will visit the island of Gam, where smiling villagers will greet you and accompany you to the lush jungle. After a short trek to the bird-watching platform, around 45 minutes, we’ll spend time in search of the elusive, exotic bird. Afterward, we will return to the boat for a well-deserved breakfast surrounded by the picturesque mushroom-shaped islands of Kabui Bay.

The bay marks the entrance to the narrow channel known for its strong currents that flow through at each tide. Surrounded by limestone cliffs and lush vegetation, the channel provides a view of a spectacular saltwater river, blanketed with brilliant sea fans, sponges, and corals. Located on the edge of Gam, lie quiet waterways that take us to thick mangrove forests where we will tender through the inlets to explore the lively jungle. If we are lucky, we may spot the stingless jellyfish. They tend to stay close to the surface feeding on plankton, allowing us to have a once in a lifetime swim with the surreal creatures.

sailing trip raja ampat

Day 10 & 11

Wayag islands, north raja ampat.

We’ll spend the next two days sailing through the magnificent Wayag Islands. A picture-perfect panorama dotted with small green islands rising from the water dotted with pristine white sands and breathtaking turquoise water. A playground for water enthusiasts, it is the perfect backdrop to discover the area at water level. You’ll have a chance to kayak hidden coves or tender to through the crystal clear waters to a secluded beach. Take to land to hike the famed island peak for an awe-inspiring view of the rock formations and its surrounding waters. The trek concludes at a white powdery beach where you’ll have a chance to sit back and enjoy a fantastic sunset as the crew prepares a fabulous meal on a deserted beach.

sailing trip raja ampat

Kri, Dampier strait

Wake up to the sounds of nature and view a magnificent sunrise over the Kri peninsula. After breakfast, you’ll have time to explore the sights of Mioskin Bay, snorkel over the healthy reef, or paddle through the mangrove forest, exploring its life-sustaining eco-system.  The Kri peninsula is a blissful underwater paradise of vibrant color, abundant marine life, and offers some the best underwater landscapes in Raja Ampat. Its water holds a treasure waiting to be explored, dive or snorkel Sardine Reef, Mike’s Point, and Cape Kri, where spectacular coral gardens are home to an array of reef fish, sharks, turtles, and manta rays. You’ll have a chance to stretch your legs as we head ashore to visit the town of Yenbekwan for a glimpse at island life.

sailing trip raja ampat

Today we’ll sail the Dampier Strait. Named after William Dampier, the great explorer who sailed through the channel on his way to the Northwestern tip of Papua. The Dampier Strait’s tidal surges move a massive amount of seawater, creating a phenomenon where the currents flow parallel to the equator. These tidal surges carry with them abundant plankton, and what attracts hundreds of Mantas to Aroborek Island during certain times of the year. You’ll have time to dive or snorkel the shallow sandy bottom waiting for the graceful mantas to pass by in an awe-inspiring underwater ballet.

After lunch, we’ll head ashore to the island of Arborek. A traditional stop for boats, the warm people of Aroborek welcome visitors with open arms and pure Papuan warmth. This tiny island, surrounded by lush forest and tall palm trees, is home to under 200 residents. Relying on the ocean for sustenance, the Arborek make beautiful handicrafts out of sustainable materials; sea pandan leaves, wood, and bamboo. It will be a day to remember, and you’ll depart the island with lifelong memories of the Papuan spirit.

sailing trip raja ampat

We bid a fond farewell to the remote islands as we depart to Sorong.

After a hearty breakfast, the crew will escort you to the harbor and continue onto the local airport for your return flight home.

My Trip to Raja Ampat (16 Things To Do, Tips & How To Get There)

sailing trip raja ampat

Travelling is not only about the destination; the journey is sometimes just as incredible! This famous quote was definitely applicable to my trip to Raja Ampat. If you have read my blog Sailing through the Raja Ampat Islands with Mutiara Laut you know how I ended up on this amazing luxury sailing ship and that I had the time of my life.

Like anyone else I have always been dreaming to go to Raja Ampat and in 2016 I finally got the chance to visit. This island group is any scuba divers dream but there is more than that. This place on earth is so peaceful it could be like in heaven. So blue, so green, no pollution, hardly any human traces just raw nature at its best.

trip to raja ampat7

Off the beaten track Indonesia

When you mention this amazing place to someone who is interested in exploring remote areas of the world I am sure they will start getting excited. Raja Ampat is a very deserted island group in West Papau and the number one off the beaten track Indonesia destination. Its isolated location makes it a paradise for explorers, but the reality will tell you that to travel to Raja Ampat is not that easy.

trip to raja ampat5

Organize your own trip to Raja Ampat, a Raja Ampat Tour or a liveaboard?

An organized Raja Ampat tour is pretty exclusive and the reason is simple: there are hardly any facilities on the islands, most islands are inhabited, have no electricity, no natural resources, and no phone signal. If you decide to organize a trip to Raja Ampat by yourself be prepared to go back to basic. If you have unlimited time and are up for a big adventure go for it.

Where is Raja Ampat located?

Raja Ampat may be a paradise to visit, but it is a pain in the ass to get there. Raja Ampat is located of the coast of West Papua in northeast Indonesia.

where is raja ampat located

Raja Ampat is off the beaten path in Indonesia, but there is still a phone connection possible. Have a look at my best sim card in Indonesia article to know which mobile internet provider is best for traveling in Indonesia.

How to get to Raja Ampat

As I said getting to Raja Ampat is not easy, but first you will have to get to Sorong on the mainland of West Papua. Sorong has the closest airport to Raja Ampat and is the hub for all those travelers willing to explore, dive and amaze the beauty of this off the beaten path destination in Indonesia.

How to get to Sorong, West Papua

From Jakarta there are direct flights nowadays:

  • PT. Nam Air flies directly from Jakarta to Sorong in 4h 5min and is the budget option for around $80 one-way.
  • Garuda Indonesia flies also directly from Jakarta to Sorong in 4h 15min but will cost 3 times as much: $250 one-way.

From Bali there are no direct flights to Sorong. Plan for a long journey!

  • Sriwijaya Air is the budget option for around $80 one-way. The journey takes about 12 hours with a 8 hour layover in Makassar, Sulawesi.
  • Garuda Indonesia has about the same journey. The stopover is an hours horter, but you will pay the double: $170 for one-way.

By boat to Sorong?

It is fairly impossible to get to Sorong by boat, unless you have a couple weeks and want to go island hopping along the way. There are for example boats from Manado in North Sulawesi to Ternate in North Maluku. From here there also is a boat to Sorong. I have not taken this journey myself but I have asked the help of some locals to explain me this route. Boats are slow, and can take forever. Schedules are weather depended and very irregular.

From Sorong to Raja Ampat

Once you made it to the airport in Sorong you have to get to the harbor to make your way to the islands. Best way to get from the airport to the harbor is to take a taxi. It will take about 10 minutes and should never cost more than $10.

Raja Ampat actually means 4 kingdoms and therefore consists of 4 bigger islands. All the 4 bigger islands are inhabited but have countless uninhabited little islands around them. From the harbor of Sorong you will have to choose where you want to go. Waisai is the most popular island to visit in Raja Ampat. It also serves as the capital for Raja Ampat and is the easiest to get to from Sorong. But there is also Misool, which is further away and even harder to get to, but much more of an adventure when you travel to Raja Ampat.

From Sorong to Waisai

From the public pier in Sorong there are express ferries to Waisai twice daily at 9.00am and 2.00pm. The other way around the same schedule applies. The boat is called Bahari Express and is a modern big white ferry with red letters. Tickets cost 100,000 ($6,5) for economy and 150,000 ($10) for VIP/AC.

Tickets can be bought on board and there is no need/possibility to reserve a seat online.

boat schedule from sorong to raja ampat

From Sorong to Misool

Taking a boat from Sorong to Misool is a little harder and ferries run infrequent. The boat from Sorong take 5 hours. Look in Sorong harbor for a boat to Yellu Village.

There are two different ferry companies:

Kapal Fajar Baru 8

  • From Sorong there is a nightboat leaving every Monday at midnight 00.00.
  • The boat back from Misool to Sorong goes on Thursday at 09.00 am.

Km Fajar Indah II

  • Boat from Sorong to Misool: every Friday 00.00 (midnight).
  • Boat from Misool to Sorong: every Saturday at 15.00 pm.

If you travel to Raja Ampat take in mind that boat schedules are just an estimate and change without prior notice. Changes in weather conditions will often result in changes. Ask your Raja Ampat accommodation to verify ferry times the day before your departure.

When to visit Raja Ampat

Raja Ampat obviously has a tropical climate with great temperatures all year round. But there is a wet periode with most rainfall between May to August. The dry season lasts from October to April and is the best time to visit Raja Ampat.

Liveaboard Raja Ampat

If you want to avoid the hassle then save up a little bit more money and join an organized liveaboard. From what I have seen I am afraid that this is the only way to get the most of your Raja Ampat tour. If you have read more of my blog then you know I am not a fan of organized tours, but if you want to see the real beauty of this fantastic natural wonder then travel to Raja Ampat with someone who knows where to go in Raja Ampat. I was among the lucky ones to enjoy this paradise in style on the majestic luxury schooner of the Mutiara Laut , click to see their website!

Of course is scuba diving one of the best things to do in Raja Ampat and therefore I named it as one of the best scuba dive destinations in the world .

16 Things to do Raja Ampat

In total I sailed around for 7 days and although I was constantly at sea, time was flying! You might think staying on a 46-meter long boat for a week there will be moments that you are finding yourself lost at sea, but there was never a dull moment. With hardly any phone reception and therefore no Internet, it was a bit of a rehab for me I can tell you, but I totally loved being disconnected from the world and may be that was one of the best things about my sailing trip to Raja Ampat. Every day I enjoyed doing all the amazing activities, then it was time to watch the sunset, catch up with great stories of that day, eating catch of the day and watching stars while sailing in the middle of the night!

1. Scuba Diving

Of course scuba diving is one of the best things to do in Raja Ampat, This is what draws people from all over the world to this underwater paradise. All my dive friends on Facebook were sending me messages like: ‘stop posting pictures, we are jealous!’ Diving in Raja Ampat is every divers dream because of the incredible underwater world and marine life. Diving with Manta Rays, whalesharks, seahorses, and dolphins all in one dive is possible!

2. Snorkelling

Don’t worry if you are not a scuba diver, snorkelling is just as great. The shallow reefs around the islands are untouched. Sometimes there is even no need to gear up and get your self in your scuba gear, just a snorkel and fins are enough to see amazing things. While snorkelling I also saw big tunas, barracuda’s, and yes also sharks! We even tried to snorkel with dolphins, but ended up seeing the reef sharks in the middle of the ocean hunting for sardines!

3. Island hopping in Raja Ampat

It means a lot when an avid scuba diver like me says that the true beauty of Raja Ampat not only lies underwater! I have been to places like El Nido and Halong Bay that are in essence very similar, but my trip to Raja Ampat totally stands out. In 7 days sailing I saw may be a 1,000 islands but only 3 other boats and a handful local sea gypsies. This area is so remote that building a sustainable village is almost impossible. There are a couple islands that are inhabited but don’t expect more than a couple stilt houses and some hidden wooden sheds between the palm trees. More than 99% of the islands are uninhabited and a pristine paradise. Some have beaches, some only coral gardens, some are accessible, some not. Exploring the Raja Ampat islands for sure is my coolest island hopping tour ever and together with diving the best things to do in Raja Ampat.

4. Wake boarding

One of the most amazing things about the Mutiara Laut is that it has two tenders available for anything the guests are up to. When I heard that there was the possibility to go wakeboarding I got really excited! I only did it once in a cable park, which was big fun! If you ask me now where I really learned how to wake board I can say: Raja Ampat! :)

5. Watching the most amazing sunsets

Who is not a fan of sunsets? Out on the ocean they get even better, the horizon is endless and there are always some clouds around. Here in this paradise the only thing that could spoils your unobstructed view were the karst shaped Raja Ampat islands! Sunrises were equally stunning but I am not a big fan of them! ;)

6. Sailing in Raja Ampat

I have done a sailing trip before from Panama to Colombia and it was amazing, but it was in a small catamaran and because there was hardly any wind we only sailed once for a couple hours. Now I found myself on a two mast Schooner, build to perfection by a renowned shipper from Holland. Putting up all the sails up was a long process and all the 18 crew members were involved. I think it took a little under an hour but wow what was it impressive to see the Mutiara Laut with all the sails up. The motor was turned off and the only thing you could hear was the wind in the sails and the ship breaking through the waves. Such an amazing experience lying in the nets on the bow of the ship. I am in doubt now, may be sailing is the best thing to do in Raja Ampat! I don’t know anymore, my trip to Raja Ampat was so phenomenal, everything was cool!

7. Deserted islands

For the ultimate Robinson Crusoe experience you have to explore a little island that has some cliffs for a lookout, a little beach for a fire, some trees for shelter and a house reef to fish. The ultimate survivor islands are easy to find here and from what I heard is that they filmed a couple seasons of the French survivor here. I know exactly why they chose this location!

trip to raja ampat18

8. Heavenly beaches

On a Raja Ampat tour you gotta find yourself that picture-perfect tiny little island with a white sand beach and some palm trees. There are plenty around so I chose my own to get dropped off. I brought some drinks, sat in the sand, looked around, sipped my beer, felt the crystal clear sea water coming in at my feet, smiled, sipped again on my beer and thought: wow this is fucking amazing!

trip to raja ampat10

9. Eating fresh seafood

On the ocean every journey is a food journey. I love catch of the day and whatever it is it has never been disappointed. Of course the amazing crew on board the Mutiara Laut prepared some fantastic dishes but the best thing still is the fresh seafood caught just before dinnertime!

10. Wayag Viewpoint Raja Ampat

Probably the most famous spot in Raja Ampat is the Wayag Viewpoint. It was the only place where there were some kind of touristy activities going on and we saw a couple other boats that were doing day trips from Sorong. Local tourists, no foreigners by the way. There is a staircase that leads you to a magnificent viewpoint on top of one of the islands overlooking the absolutely stunning bay.

trip to raja ampat16

I would have loved to go Live at this viewpoint and show my social media followers this absolutely breathtaking spot while I was exploring it, but I can tell you there is absolutely no phone reception in Raja Ampat. Once you get phone reception you might want an indonesia prepaid sim card with data.

trip to raja ampat17

11. Watching marine life

Watching the giant gentles of the ocean will never get boring, staring the horizon on the lookout for fins popping out of the water. According to the captain we were not really lucky on this trip to Raja Ampat, but we still saw a pod of dolphins and some whales a little bit further away.

trip to raja ampat1

12. Bird watching

It was not really my favourite thing but apparently there are many bird species around. I saw a ton during the trip and tried to catch some rare ones that only exist in West Papua with a binocular. If you are a bird watching fan inquire about the Bird of Paradise to add to your Raja Ampat tour.

trip to raja ampat22

13. SUP boarding

With so many islands around there are many calm places to jump on a stand up paddleboard and paddle around. In and between the islands where the water is so crystal clear that you don’t need a snorkel to see clearly what is going on under the surface. I mostly tried to paddle out just before sunset, at least those times when I was not shooting sunset pictures.

trip to raja ampat14

14. Exploring caves

Most Raja Ampat islands are uninhabited and therefore unexplored as well. Though there are a couple tourist spots that a handful tourists every month! LOL. We went to a place that was hardly accessible as the waters were super shallow, but zigzagging through a maze of islands we found a old wooden ladder that lead us over a rock and into a cave filled with water. Swimming in a cave in Papua is a must do on your trip to Raja Ampat. It was an amazing adventure and the further we got inside the dark it became. Without our torches it would be pitch black. To make it even more excited we weren’t there alone: spiders, bats and hell knows what lives there. After swimming for 15 minutes there was light at the end of the tunnel and a little climb lead us to a hidden lagoon surrounded by 50m high limestone cliffs. There are no words how to describe this, but I swam to the middle of this small lagoon floated on my back and looked around. This is how I imagined Raja Ampat to be, something I had never seen before: a magical place so far away from civilisation! My mind was zooming out like Google Maps floating here in this lagoon. I wish I had a 360 camera! This is the real off the beaten track Indonesia destination.

trip to raja ampat8

15. Mangrove tours

We all know mangroves are a vital breeding ground for marine life and around the Raja Ampat islands there are a lot of mangroves to explore. Best to be done on a paddleboard, but we were warned there are salt water crocodiles that live in this part of the world. Unfortunately I did not see any! :)

trip to raja ampat15

16. Watching shooting stars

Another magical phenomenon is to watch the stars at night. There is no better place to look for shooting stars than in the middle of the ocean. Did you know that it is really easy to see shooting stars on a clear day? You just gotta be a little patience and you will always see some!

6 Tips for traveling to Raja Ampat

These are vital things to know when you travel to Raja Ampat.

1. No alcohol

West-Papua is a dry province in Indonesia, that means alcohol is forbidden. This is in contrary with the rest of Indonesia where alcohol is legal. According to the stories that I heard is that in West Papua alcoholism became such a huge problem that they declared it a dry state to solve the problem!

2. Religion in Raja Ampat

What is the religion in Raja Ampat? Christian! Another remarkable fact is that the people of Raja Ampat are not Muslim like everywhere else in Indonesia. There are some mosques in Waisai and Sorong, but because of the colonized history most of the people are Christians.

3. Very few ATMs

The only place in Raja Ampat where you can find an ATM is in Waisai. Here you have four different bank companies that let you withdraw money. My tip for traveling to Raja Ampat is not to rely on these machines. Often they don’t accept foreign cards or are out of service. Bring enough cash in advance. You can bring dollars there is always somewhere to exchange them, but it is better to bring Indonesian Rupiah.

4. Bring warm clothes

Although there is a tropical climate in Raja Ampat, during and after rain showers it can feel a bit chilled. Especially when there is some wind it feel much better wearing some warm clothes. Rain comes unexpectedly at times, so always bring a rain coat.

5. Meet the people of Raja Ampat

Locals are extremely friendly and love to see foreigners visit Raja Ampat. Of course they also understand that tourists bring money and these people most probably live a very simple island life. They may not have much, but they are super friendly and welcoming. Try to give something back, leave some stuff you can miss or buy some before your trip. Pencils and books for kids are always a good idea to bring to Raja Ampat.

6. Dive and snorkel with whale sharks in Cenderawasih Bay

If you travel to Raja Ampat you might want to combine your visit with another divers dream destination: Cenderawasih Bay. If you want to snorkel with these amazing creatures you have to head here. This bay is partially declared a marine national park and with 8 square kilometers the largest in Southeast Asia. Cenderawasih Bay is located on the east coast of West Papua. Whale sharks are around all year long.

Trip to Raja Ampat too expensive?

Is a trip to Raja Ampat a bridge too far? Travelling in Indonesia is captivating, so you might want to start with a trip Bali. I have been to Bali numerous times and totally loving it now. I can easily give you 12 reasons to visit Bali , or what about an adventure on the stunning Nusa Penida Island . Want to try magic mushrooms in Gili Trawangan ? I can tell you were to get them! More off the beaten path destinations in Indonesia? Go to the burial caves of Tana Toraja and see dead people! ;)

Traveling on the water is nothing new around the islands of Hawaii – the Indigenous population of these Pacific islands is descended from settlers of the Polynesian isles, who would travel vast distances across the ocean in strong, seaworthy double-hulled canoes. These days, an island-hopping cruise is the ideal way to get a taste of the different character of each Hawaiian outpost, from Maui and Oahu to Kauai and the Island of Hawaii.

Most Hawaii sailings start or end on the West Coast, usually in San Francisco, Seattle or even Vancouver in British Columbia, so intrepid island adventures are bookended by a few relaxing days at sea. The exception for those who want to pack their island adventures into a week is Norwegian Cruise Line, whose ship Pride of America is based in Hawaii year-round, with seven-day sailings from $1,346 per person. That’s enough time to go surfing on the wave-fringed beaches of Oahu, visit the Pearl Harbor National Memorial or glimpse an active volcano, Kilauea, on the Island of Hawaii.
