Runter vom Berg und rein ins Bergwerk!

Jetzt heißt es Spot an für ein Mountainbike-Erlebnis der Extraklasse. Denn im Schein deiner Stirnlampe erwartet dich ein Paradies für Mountainbiker. Nach der Einweisung steigst über eine etwa 20 Meter lange Treppe hinab ins Bergwerk. Von hier beginnst du deine Tour, die je nach Fahrkönnen bis zu 15 km lang ist. Das schier endlose Labyrinth wurde extra für Mountainbiker ausgebaut und bietet Fortgeschrittenen und Endurobikern viele Herausforderungen. Zwischendurch fährst du verschiedene Stationen an und erhältst Informationen zum Eisenerzabbau oder gönnst dir eine kleine Stärkung. Gehe in den Untergrund und erlebe die Revolution des Mountainbikens!

Eisenach und Biken im Bergwerk: MTB-Tour 850m unter der Erde

Die Idee für dieses ungewöhnliche Wochenende ist im letzten Sommer entstanden, als sich Henning und Reiner beim Karpatencross begegnet sind. Reiner ist nicht nur ein guter Mountain Biker und exzellenter Läufer, sondern auch Steiger im Salzbergwerk Merkers. Früher hat er hier Salz rausgeholt, heute arbeitet er im Event Management und guidet die Unter-Tage-Touren.

Wir treffen uns mit 16 Personen in Eisenach und haben am Samstag noch oberirdisch und jeder nach seinem Geschmack ein buntes Programm: Stadtführung mit einem Bummel durch die Innenstadt, Besichtigung der Wartburg, Wandern durch die Drachenschlucht und auch eine Bike Tour. Reiner ist heute schon unser lokaler Guide und führt uns nach einer kleinen Stadtrundfahrt zunächst hoch zum Rennsteig. Weil wir uns dabei als konditionell und technisch würdig erweisen, hat er für uns als Highlight noch einen spannenden und abenteuerlichen Weg zurück nach Eisenach.

Am Sonntag morgen fahren wir zunächst mit den Autos zum Salzbergwerk Merkers, das in der Nähe von Eisenach liegt und aktuell noch in Betrieb ist. Zu speziellen Terminen finden hier die unterirdischen Events in den stillgelegten Bereichen des Bergwerks statt: z.B. Konzerte, Läufe und Bike-Touren. Sicherheitshalber wird während dieser Events im ganzen Bergwerk nicht gesprengt und kein Salz abgebaut.

Wir sind äußerst gespannt, als Reiner uns mit seinem Team am Bergwerk empfängt. Wie fühlt es sich an, mit dem Bike tief unter der Erde durch Stollen und Höhlen zu fahren, wo Jahre vorher in harter Arbeit Salz abgebaut wurde? Während unsere Bikes nach unten gebracht werden, ziehen wir uns zunächst einmal leichte Klamotten an – kurzärmlig, denn unten im Bergwerk ist es heute 20-30 Grad wärmer als oben. Nach einer kurzen Einweisung durch Reiner verteilen wir uns auf die 3 Förderkörbe, mit den wir wie früher die Bergleute „einfahren“, 500m senkrecht nach unten. Wir steigen aus und finden in einer unterirdischen beleuchteten Halle unsere Bikes. Noch einmal Durchzählen, dann geht es los ins Dunkle. Jeder mit mindestens zwei Lampen nach vorne und einem Rücklicht. Wir fahren durch die Stollen, mal hoch mal runter, der Boden ist gut fahrbar, auch wenn das zumeist festgefahrene Salz manchmal wie Glatteis schimmert.

Auf unserer Tour kommen wir unter Tage an diversen markanten Stellen vorbei. Der „Konzert-Saal“ für ca. 1000 Personen war früher eine riesige Halle für die Zwischenlagerung des Salzes, bevor es nach oben transportiert wurde. Heute erleben wir eine beeindruckende Laser Light Show, dazu Musik mit einer fantastischen Akustik. Auf der weiteren Tour hat Reiner für uns noch ein paar Highlights, u.a. eine Sprengsimulation, bei der sich Verena souverän als Sprengmeisterin beweist.

Die tiefste Stelle unserer Tour führt uns eine Sole tiefer zu einer Kristallgrotte, die früher beim Fördern zufällig entdeckt wurde – eine kleine separate Höhle mit funkelnden Salzkristallen. Im Vorraum der Höhle erhalten wir an der „Kristallbar“ ein Erfrischungsgetränk. Das ist uns durchaus willkommen, denn hier unten sind es 28 Grad bei nicht mehr als 30% Luftfeuchtigkeit. Gestärkt geht es nun wieder ca. 300 hm hoch und zurück zum Förderkorb.

Insgesamt fahren wir ca. 20 km durch die Stollen bei max. 17% Steigung. Die Tour ist durchaus abwechslungsreich und interessant mit den bergbau-technischen und geschichtlichen Hintergründen. In den Stollen lassen sich Steigungen und Gefälle schwer einschätzen, die Lampen kommen endlich mal so richtig zum Einsatz. Es hat Spaß gemacht!

Pedaling Through California’s Redwoods on Railbikes (2024)

Just when I thought the Wine Train was the coolest way to ride the rails in Northern California, along come Railbikes, a new excursion from Skunk Train of Mendocino. And unlike the Wine Train, you don’t have to be over 21 to enjoy it!

Pedal Through the Redwoods

California’s majestic redwood forests are as beautiful as they are famous, and checking them out is one of the most interesting and fun things to do in Mendocino County ! Railbikes are an amazing way to take in these legendary redwoods.

Railbikes are two-person, pedal-powered vehicles that sit securely on the train tracks. Riding them will take you along scenic Pudding Creek, cross over majestic wooden trestle bridges, and journey into the heart of the redwood forest.

Departing from the Skunk Train Depot in Fort Bragg – about three hours north of San Francisco on the Pacific coast, this railbike excursion will take you on a one-hour round trip ride through a redwood forest along the Pudding Creek Estuary, and to a turnaround at the historic Glen Blair Junction.

A Historic Railway Route

The Skunk Train is a heritage railroad that has been operating on the north coast since 1885.

The views on this scenic stretch of track are nearly the same as they would have been more than a century ago! This is the result of visionary forest stewardship and a dedication to the natural wonder of the redwoods. Some of the trees along this route are more than 1,000 years old and reach more than 300 feet tall.

The nickname Skunk – by the way – originated in 1925 when motorcars were introduced. These single unit self-propelled motorcars had gasoline powered engines for power and pot-bellied stoves (burning crude oil to keep the passengers warm). The combination of the fumes created a very pungent odor. Old timers living along the line said these motorcars were like skunks, “You could smell them before you could see them.”

Railbikes Offer a Fun New Way to Travel the Rails

Railbikes provide the newest way to experience the Skunk Train’s Redwood Route. The railbikes sit securely on the track, allowing passengers to make their journey in a peaceful and quiet atmosphere unlike anything else found on a railway.

Railbike riders depart in a small group, with a trained guide leading the way along the track. Since the track is owned and operated exclusively by the Skunk Train, they guarantee no trains or other traffic along the route. It is 100% safe from trains!

The bikes even come with an electric assist – ideal for taking a relaxing breather while still moving along the track, or for a little bit of extra oomph while you make your way up the gentle grade on the return trip.

The seven-mile trip isn’t too tiring, so the electric motor probably won’t be necessary for most people unless you have young kids – but it can certainly provide a nice break along the way.

A guide is there to help out should anything come up, but these bikes are incredibly easy to ride – perfect for all ages and skill levels.

The Pudding Creek Estuary

The Skunk Train rail line follows the Pudding Creek Estuary for many miles from the mouth of the river in Fort Bragg inland through the redwoods. The trip is beautifully scenic, with a large waterway that still features old wooden pilings from long-forgotten trestle bridges.

A bounty of wildlife calls the estuary home as well, and these railbikes are quiet enough that you’ll likely see many animals, including blue herons, osprey, egrets, deer and river otters.

Glen Blair Junction

The end of the line is Glen Blair Junction, 3.5 miles along the Redwood Route. This historic site has been transformed into a wonderful stop, with picnic tables and miles of easy-to-hike trails into the redwoods. It’s here that the railbikes are lifted off the tracks and turned around for the return journey.

Fun for the Whole Family

Railbikes are truly a great excursion for families. The two-person bike makes it easy for an adult to travel with a younger child, and the electric assist means even young kids will be able to make their way up the gentle slope of the line.

Larger families can rent multiple rail bikes and travel as a group, remaining near each other while still being able to move at their own pace.

Although the historic Skunk Train remains an incredible way to experience the redwoods, this activity offers a truly unique and magical way to explore. Railbikes are an awesome excursion for families who want to do something healthy and active on their vacation.

This is a strenuous excursion for adults only, and lasts for approximately four hours. A picnic is included. The rate for the Railbikes on the Noyo adventure is $495 per bike (for two people) and includes an 8% Historic Preservation Assessment. As with the regular excursion, there is no discount for single riders.

No, it can be very dangerous for a dog on your lap. Saw a TikTok video where a dog’s tail got caught somehow and severely injured (Iowa tracks). Please rent the pat cart or leave your doggo at home for this particular adventure.

Wherever I am in the world, I love straying from the beaten path, experiencing local life, and discovering hidden gems - camera in hand. What are some of the best outdoor adventures in Southern California?

• Noah Purifoy Outdoor Desert Art Museum (Joshua Tree): The late Noah Purifoy left behind the most unique display of large-scale sculpture in the Desert Art Museum of Assemblage Art. In 1989 he moved to the Mojave Desert and spent the last 15 years of his life crafting the creation from junked materials. He died in 2004. This extraordinary landscape is one of California’s greatest art exhibits. Folks can access this mind-blowing inspirational scene every day from dawn to dusk for free! Sign in at the kiosk when you visit where brochures are available for self-guided tours. Private group tours and docent-guided are also available with reservations.

Buena Vista Park Pond And Open Space (Vista): This lovely 121.3 acres offers natural scenery of the pond and rich, wooded hiking trails. The Agua Hedionda Trail is a 2.3-mile easy loop along a pretty stream with plenty of shade which comes in handy during the warmer months. Enjoy the benches and multiple paved paths that connect back to the main loop. The Buena Vista Park Loop is another easy hike that goes about a mile down a gravel and dirt path. The swamp of the park entrance offers great photos of ducks and geese!

• Lake Gregory Regional Park (Crestline): This multi-season adventure awaits offering a wide variety of activities. In the summer pack a picnic and enjoy a day at the beach. Splash around at the water park, go paddleboarding, kayaking, and canoeing. Plan a fishing trip this fall and rent a boat to spend an entire day on the blue water with a backdrop of vivid foliage. Book an e-bike tour, or take a walk on a nature trail. Do you roller skate? You can learn at the exciting skate park. Bring your dogs too for their very own dog park. By the way, this place is in the stunning San Bernardino National Forest where peaceful places abound, in case you just want to sit and do nothing.
