One of the oldest churches of Ilocos Sur, was built in 1590 with Fr. Juan Bautista de Montoya , as the first parish priest. The Augustinian missionaries named it St. Augustine , after their religious congregation which, of course, soon became the Patron Saint.

BANTAY BELFRY

The picturesque, rustic and durable BELFRY (or famous Bantay bell tower) sits on a hilltop ( atop the Calvario Hill ) overlooking a vivid green vast of pastureland and the mountain view of the Province of Abra. It was used as a watchtower for invading enemy forces during World Wars I (during the invasion of Zambals) and II. Evidently, the scenic Bantay Church and bell tower are monumental witnesses to various atrocities, uprisings and staged revolts.

DIEGO SILANG PARK

The Diego Silang Park was named in tribute to the heroic feat of this Ilocano hero who was killed at this very site. Ironically, the memorial monument was built in 1763 during the Spanish reign to lend distinction and pay honor to Miguel Vicos, the Spanish mestizo who killed Diego Silang. It is actually the heart and soul of the [central] town plaza where political exercises, social functions and cultural gatherings are held.

QUIRINO BRIDGE

This grandiose four span metallic bridge is named after the late former President Elpidio Quirino and spreads across the Abra river connecting the rocky mountain hills of the town of Santa and the tail end of Bantay. Also referred to as ‘Banaoang bridge’ (at p. 28), it majestically connects and separates two transcending mountains and widely praised because of its marvellous engineering and grand architectural design as glorified by its splendid panoramic beauty, strength and durability when it survived the bombings of World War II. From here, one can appreciate beneath the serenity and tranquillity of scenic spots overlooking an enormous stretch of riverbed, zigzagging sloping contour of the mountain side and a serene land mass as far as the eye can see.

VICTORIA PARK

Locally known simply as ‘ Caniaw’ , this square established in 1962 was named in honor of one of the daughters of former President Elpidio Quirino. Herein can be found a water falls, a crystal clear natural spring water source (supplying our town and adjacent Vigan), a herbaria, and a botanical nursery. It is connected to the MNR by a 2.2 kil. road situated on the middle foot of Mount Caniaw, it is part of the so-called Caniao Reforestation Project and Wildlife Sanctuary . Gigantic varieties of mountain trees and various species of flora and fauna could be found and waiting to be discovered.

Situated on top of Mount Caniaw, (where Victoria Park is located), the entirety of Bantay and nearby towns could be viewed from this site, even as far as the Abra and the Cordillera mountains. It is 8.5 kilometer road from the national highway, with an elevation of 1,200 meters above sea level, and part of the Northern Luzon Heroes Hill National Park (NLHHNP) that extends up to the towns of Santa and Narvacan. It is often referred to simply as “radar” because in the early 60’s, a lofty twin metallic-sheet satellite towers are prominently seen radiating during the day and beaming at night.

Bantay Bell Tower - one of the top Vigan tourist spots

Located a short distance away from Vigan City is the Bantay Church Bell Tower, one of the landmark attractions in Ilocos Sur.

The structure was constructed in 1591 adjacent to the Saint Augustine Parish Church (also known as Bantay Church), one of the oldest churches in the Philippines. It originally served as a lookout point and defense fortification against pirate attacks and other external threats during the Spanish colonial period and then again as a lookout point against invading forces during the WWII.

Bantay Tower has a beautiful neo-gothic facade, making it a popular spot for photos.

Unfortunately, in 2022 an earthquake damaged the bell tower. As of 2024, going inside the bell tower is still not allowed due to reconstruction efforts, but you can still see and take pictures of the Bantay Tower from outside.

By now, we know that Ilocos Region is home to a number of beautiful heritage churches, right? Santa Maria Church (also referred to as Nuestra Señora de la Asuncion) is another UNESCO World Heritage Site, featuring a beautiful brick façade and a cylindrical bell tower.

For those who like off-the-beaten-path adventure, one of the Ilocos Sur tourist spots that you should see is Aw-Asen Falls. Standing about 121 meters high, Aw-Asen Falls is considered the highest waterfall in the Ilocos Region. It’s tucked away in the mountains of Sigay, away from the main tourist crowd, making it a great spot for nature tripping.

To get here, you will need to go on a short but tiring trek for almost an hour. The trail mostly consists of mountain path and thick vegetation. Once at the waterfall area, don’t miss the chance to take photos of the majestic waterfall in its glory and take a dip in its cool, deep basin. It is said that the waterfall is fed by a spring uphill, so the water is safe to drink.

The best time to visit Aw-Asen Falls is from November to May.

Next up is one of the best-kept attractions in Ilocos Sur: Pinsal Falls.

Located in the town of Sta. Maria, Pinsal Falls is an 80-foot waterfall with a wide emerald-green basin for swimming. Locals also refer to it as “Twin Falls,” since the flowing cascade separates into two.

Another natural attraction in Ilocos Sur that you should see is Sangbay ni Ragsak , Ilokano’s own “Falls of Happiness.” Sangbay ni Ragsak is a beautiful 30-meter waterfall with a wide basin that goes approximately 6-7 feet deep, perfect for swimming. It’s a great spot for a quick dip, especially as it is lesser crowded than other tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Getting here is easy. From the registration point, the waterfall is only a short walk away. There are also cottages and tables along the trail that you can rent if you want to stay awhile.

Owned by former Filipino politician Chavit Singson, Baluarte Zoo is a sprawling animal zoo located in Vigan City. Visitors can get up close and personal with a variety of animals, including tigers, ostriches, and reptiles, making it a fun-filled destination for families and animal lovers alike.

Note : I personally do not recommend any destination that engages in picture taking with captive tigers. I believe there are alternative animal sanctuaries that promote conservation. I’ve included Baluarte Zoo since it is one of the popular tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Finally, buy some pasalubong before your trip home! Vigan empanada, Vigan longganisa, bagnet, and chichacorn are favorite food souvenirs to take home. For recipients that love home cooking, take home a bottle or two of sukang iloko.

There are also shops in Ilocos Sur selling inabel clothing, bags, wallets, and other products.

How to get to Ilocos Sur

Here’s how to get from Manila to Ilocos Sur:

The most common way to commute is by taking a bus from Pasay or Cubao to Vigan . Travel is around 8-9 hours.

The closest airport is Laoag International Airport in Laoag City. Cebu Pacific and Philippine Airlines fly from Manila to Laoag on selected days.

From the airport, ride a bus, van, or taxi to your destination in Ilocos Sur.

What are the fascinating tourist spots in Ilocos Sur for the curious traveler aside from the world-famous Vigan City? Included are both popular and off-beaten places to visit and include in your itinerary.

I just resigned from a job after some months of exhausting and hectic engagements. That was my first job in the sprawling Manila metropolis and I never thought it could be that stress-filled for someone like me who got used to living a simple life in the mountains.

I badly needed a break and travel was my ultimate respite. Instead of going back home, I chose to explore the eco-cultural wonders of Ilocos Sur, one of the provinces of Region I.

If you’re also planning for an immersion there, here are the must-see tourist spots to see. Take note. Most of these are off-beaten, thus, suited for those who don’t like touristy destinations. Let’s go!

Behold Ilocos Sur Tourist Spot s

1. aw-asen falls.

Aw-asen falls is one of the tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Aw-asen falls is one of the newly discovered tourist spots in Ilocos Sur, located on one of its remotest barangays namely, Santo Rosario in Sigay. Expect humps and bumps along the road to the barangay as it has not been fully paved.

The challenge does not end there. From the barangay’s nearest drop-off point, you ‘ll have to hike steep terrains and cross rivers before finally catching sight of majestic Aw-asen falls.

Aw-asen falls measures more than 142 feet (43 meters). It carved a wide and very deep pool. It’s crystal-clear and cold waters provide an instant relief after the arduous hike of getting here.

2. Bantay Bell Tower

One of the iconic tourist destinations in Bantay, Ilocos Sur, Bantay Bell Tower, stands on a hill overlooking Vigan City and the towns of Bantay.

Locals say that it was a favorite dating site of Diego and Gabriela Silang, both are local heroes who led revolts against the Spanish regime.

It is just 10-15 minutes of ride from Vigan. It is also adjacent to the St. Augustine Parish Church, known for its baroque-gothic architecture.

3. Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls

Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls is one of the tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls is an Iloco term, which means “Falls of Happiness.” Though it is one of the remotest tourist spots in Ilocos Sur, it is also one of the most picturesque.

It’s best to come here during the rainy season as the falls is in its full force. Patches of rainforests surround the falls, giving it a rustic view.

If you’re planning to visit Sangbay ni Ragsak Falls, you can also side trip to Dawara Falls. You can do that in less than a day! Dawara falls cascades like heavenly drizzles on the face of a massive cliff.

Even without soaking in the pool, you’ll eventually get wet because it sprays caressing mists.

5. Baluarte Resort and Mini-Zoo

If you’re looking to see exotic animals, check out Baluarte Zoo, a hundred-hectare zoological park, and resort complex. Here, you can find leopards, Bengal tigers, white lions, camels, zebras, and ostriches. You’ll feel like you are in Africa here.

The cave is named as such because it served as a barrack of General Yamashita during World War II. Locals say that the Japanese hid treasures beneath the cave which has a range of 64 meters.

To get here, expect to hike across pine forests and cross brooks. Along the way, you’ll catch sights of grasslands, high meadows, and different flora species such as orchids.

7. Calle Crisologo

Calle Crisologo is one of the must-see tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

Calle Crisologo takes you back to the Spanish times. It’s one of the most popular historical tourist spots in Vigan, Ilocos Sur. Old Spanish-style houses and shops line the cobbled street.

Here, you can ride a calesa to get you around. The surrounding shops sell Filipino weavings, handicrafts, soft brooms, sculptures, and many other interesting products. It’s best to visit here during Vigan’s Festival of the Arts, celebrated every May 1.

8. Cabugao Beach Resort

Jars from Vigan City has been gaining popularity in recent years. In the Iloco language, these are called burnay. They are made by hand from a grade-A clay which is abundant in the area.

The industry dates back to pre-colonial times and the burnay has been used for drinking tea and as a container for local ingredients.

10. Vitalis Villas

Vitalis Villas is one of the must-see tourist spots in Ilocos Sur.

When we speak of burial caves, the first thing that would come to mind is Sagada in Mt. Province. But you can also find them on a mountainous part of Ilocos Sur.

The Ken Ngilawen Burial Cave is a huge boulder with a wide crevice underneath where the log coffins are piled. Some coffins feature sculptures of a head resembling a serpent, cow, or lizard.

It’s the home of Padre Jose Burgos, one of the Filipino priests shot during the Spanish times for allegedly leading a revolt. The house, therefore, signify the heroism of the Ilocanos.

20. Syquia Mansion Museum

The mansion is said to represent the wealth of some locals in the past. These locals were active players during the Galleon Trade. Inside, you’ll find ancient furniture, relics, and paintings.

Surprisingly, one of the relics was a gift of a Chinese emperor during the Ming Dynasty. During the presidency of Elpidio Quirino, the mansion served as the Malacañang of the North.

Because of that, the museum is one of the historical places to go to in Ilocos Sur.

Bantay Watchtower as a Lookout for Invading Pirates

The Bantay Watchtower, or Bantay Belfry, is located in a little town called Bantay 10 minutes from Vigan City. Built in 1591, it once served as a watchtower for the Spanish colonists as a defense against the potential risk of invading pirates. The word 'bantay' means 'guard' in Tagalog ; and even though the Bantay Watchtower was turned into a bell tower by the nearby church in 1857, it still was used as a watchtower during the two World Wars due to its strategic location.

Nowadays though it mostly serves as a tourist spot. It sits on a hilltop 60 meters from the Bantay Church and overlooks Vigan City as well as the Province of Abra. This way the Bantay Belfry provides a pleasant view for it's daily visitors; and some even say that, apart from being able to admire the Belfry's big old bell, they can see most of Ilocos Sur as well while being in the top part of the tower.

The Bantay Tower is also quite popular among the local tourists. This is because a famous Filipino movie 'Ang Panday' was shot around the bell tower.

The Nearby Bantay Church

The Bantay Church itself was established just a year before the Bantay Belfry (1590), making it one of the oldest churches in the Ilocos Region. The church is also known as the St. Augustine Parish; it was named after St. Augustine, the patron saint by the Augustinian friars.

The church has an 'Earthquake Baroque' architecture to save the structure from the destruction some earthquakes in the Philippines might cause. Thick walls, buttressed stability, and lighter materials used in the upper structures, help the church maintain it's charm and dominant presence within this little town of Bantay.

The Bantay Church is also home to an image (in statue form) of the 'miraculous' Nuestra Señora de La Caridad, or 'Our Lady of Charity'. The Lady is often visited by pilgrims, that are praying or asking for their wishes to be granted. Legend has it that the image was once found by some local fishermen, and that it was floating in a wooden box on the Bantagay River. The image could only be carried by residents of Bantay according to the legend, and people from other villages were unable to move the object.

Vigan City Logistics

You can take a kalesa ride (Spanish style horse carriage) from Vigan City for about 10 to 15 minutes (about 15 PHP), but it's also within walking distance or you could take a tricycle. You can register for a tour at the Tourist Center alongside Calle Crisologo in Vigan. You can also just go to the Bantay Church and sign the guestbook there at the entrance; you can make a donation of any amount of your choosing. After 6 pm no more guests are allowed upon the hill anymore, so time right if you want to enjoy an amazing sunset . 2. Bantay Church Bell Tower

Our next destination is considered one of the most significant historical and religious symbols of Ilocos Sur. The Bantay Church Bell Tower was built in 1591 and was originally intended to be the watchtower of the town of Bantay, Ilocos Sur.

For many centuries, the tower watched over the safety of the people living in Bantay and Vigan. It’s strategically located on top of a hill so soldiers would be able to have a great vantage point over the towns. Well, that also meant that tourists would have a spectacular view of the landscape today! It’s even believed in history that the Bantay Church Bell Tower was the favorite date spot of the famous couple Diego and Gabriela Silang!

Today, Bantay Church Bell Tower serves as the bell tower of Saint Augustine Parish Church, which are noticeably detached from each other. This is because the bell tower was constructed way before the church! Interesting, right? 3. Vigan Cathedral

Another historically and religiously significant attraction in Vigan City is the Metropolitan Cathedral of the Conversion of St. Paul the Apostle or simply, the Vigan Cathedral. The reason why this cathedral became famous is that it’s a major part of the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Vigan City. Also, it serves as the seat of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Nueva Segovia, which covers the whole province of Ilocos Sur .

Tourists, especially pilgrims, make sure that they are able to visit and offer prayers during their Vigan City adventure. The Vigan Cathedral in itself is already a must-see attraction because of the architectural brilliance applied to the structure. It has an Earthquake Baroque style which also beautifully highlights the large buttresses on its side. Don’t forget to take some nice pictures as your remembrance!

4. National Museum of the Philippines | Ilocos Museum Regional Complex

If you’re interested in knowing more about Ilocos province’s rich culture and history, then dropping by the Ilocos Museum Regional Complex in Burgos, Vigan City should be the perfect choice for you. The museum complex is managed by the National Museum of the Philippines so everything is for free, better make the most out of it! There are two (2) major attractions here in the museum complex which are both prominent figures in our country’s national history. And they are both proud Ilokanos! First, is the Burgos Museum which holds the collection of Padre Jose Burgos’ life memorabilia, one of the 3 martyrs GomBurZa priests. Burgos Museum is actually the ancestral house of Padre Burgos so everything you’ll see around the museum were personal belongings and artifacts by the martyr priest himself.

The other one pays tribute to the 6th President of the Philippines, Elpidio Quirino. What was once the Ilocos Sur Provincial Jail turned into a special exhibit featuring some of President Quirino’s important memorabilia and historical items. Probably one of the highlights of this museum is the spectacular replica of President Quirino’s room featuring some of the actual clothes he wore during his time as president. I’m sure you’ll find it interesting wandering around the Ilocos Museum Regional Complex especially if you’re a certified history buff!

5. Chapel by The Ruins

Ah, there’s really something special about old and vintage buildings that makes us fall in love, right? Well, prepare to fall in love once you reach our next destination, Chapel by The Ruins! This serene and solemn place is actually located beside the Saint Augustine Parish Church, the same church where the famous Bantay Church Bell Tower is stationed.

It’s a really small outdoor chapel featuring stone benches and altars where you can quietly meditate and offer your prayers. Tourists visiting the church are usually invited to spend some time at the Chapel by The Ruins, especially after holy masses.

6. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

Diving deeper into the rich culture and traditions of Ilocos, you’ll discover the beautiful practice of making Pagburnayan or Burnay Jars. Originating in the small village of Pagburnayan in Vigan, Ilocos Sur, local potters utilized a hundred-year-old process of making durable clay jars.

These villagers mastered the art and craft of baking, kneading, and molding clay into perfection. It’s also a good thing that these beautiful Burnay Jars are still being promoted thanks to the thriving tourism industry of Vigan. So make sure to visit a Pagburnayan Jar Factory during your Vigan adventure to learn more about making Burnay Jars and even buy lots of pasalubong for your loved ones.

7. Plaza Burgos

Up next, if you just want to sit back, relax, and watch the beautiful culture of Vigan City unfold right before your eyes, then the best place you should visit is Plaza Burgos. This important landmark pays tribute yet again to Padre Jose Burgos, one of the three Filipino priest martyrs, the GomBurZa. The mansion features authentic items and memorabilia from the periods and they also have excellent staff offering to give you a full-course service of traditional Filipino and Ilokano cuisine.

The catch? You have to choose a costume to wear during the whole experience! You can choose to dress like an Ilustrado, Prayle, Gobernadorcillo, or even a simple Indio. Classy, right? Make sure to take awesome pictures as a remembrance of your visit!

9. Syquia Mansion

Another spectacular chance to dive deeper into Vigan City’s history and culture is by visiting the Syquia Mansion. The entire mansion in itself is already a precious gem of Philippine History as it presents the perfectly preserved Bahay-na-Bato architecture which was dominant during the Spanish Colonial Era. Inside the Syquia Mansion, you’ll find breathtaking collections and exhibits of significant family heirlooms and artifacts of powerful Ilokano families, specifically the Ang Co family.

10. Mindoro Beach

After exploring all the historical attractions of Vigan, it’s finally time to relax for a bit and focus our attention on the province’s natural wonders, right? On that note, our next destination is no other than Vigan City’s famous Mindoro Beach! Also known as the “Black Sand Beach of Vigan”, this laidback and relaxing beach destination faces the calm and dark blue waters of the West Philippine Sea. And as its iconic nickname suggests, Mindoro Beach is known for its beautiful, fine, black sands.

There are also other watersports activities held on Abra River for extreme junkies out there! Oh, and aside from enjoying these extreme activities, visitors can also admire the architectural beauty of the Old Quirino Bridge and take awesome pictures while they’re at it.

12. Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo

Up next, who wouldn’t want to meet exotic wild animals up close and even have the chance of safely interacting with them? Ah, that’s exactly what we’ll do when we visit the Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo of Vigan City! This huge zoological park covering an enormous area of 100 hectares is owned by Chavit Singson, one of the biggest names in Philippine politics and the business industry. Baluarte is often dubbed as the “Home of the Big Cats in Vigan” because one of the highlights of the zoo is the majestic Bengal Tigers and many more animals such as sea lions, iguanas, pythons, and other species of birds and reptiles.

As years go by, Baluarte Zoo keeps on expanding and developing more attractions while taking care of these wild animals. The best part of visiting Baluarte Resort and Mini Zoo is that it has no entrance fee! After visiting the Home of the Big Cats of Vigan, we’re now off to explore yet another important piece of Ilocos Sur’s exceptional history, the Crisologo Museum. Inside the museum, you’ll find excellent artifacts, memorabilia, and pieces owned by the Crisologo Family, one of the province’s most prominent families in history.

14. RG Jar Factory

As we’re nearing the end of our ultimate Vigan adventure, let me bring you to one of the best places to buy a souvenir from the province. Any guesses? Ah, that’s right! We’re heading to RG Jar Factory, one of the few authentic places left where tourists can witness how Burnay Jars are made and even try making their own. This is actually one of the fun and educational experiences you shouldn’t miss during your visit to Vigan. Here at RG Jar Factory, you’ll be amazed at how expert potters are able to turn simple clay into amazing pieces of artwork. There really are lessons on how to make these so better make the most out of it! Aside from that, there are also souvenir shops and vendors inside where you can buy delicious Ilokano snacks like the one and only Ilocos Empanada!

12. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

Recognized for its historical and cultural charms, Vigan City has drawn flocks of travelers to Ilocos Sur over the years. Contributing to its overall appeal is the Pagburnayan Jar Factory.

It is one of the few remaining factories that continue the traditional way of making burnay, or unglazed earthen jars, dating back to colonial times. The art of making jars originally came from Chinese traders who eventually settled in Vigan.

To spread the appreciation of making these clay jars, the factory lets travelers try their hand in molding their own creations during Vigan tours . The whole process involves shaping the clay on a spinning stone wheel using your own hands and traditional tools.

Let your creative mind run wild and decorate your jars to your heart's content. After, you will cook the jars inside in-ground kilns to harden them so they can stay in shape.

Today, jar-making has become one of the staple activities in Ilocos Sur tour packages. Along with teaching guests how to shape clay, the staff also share interesting stories on the origins of the craft and how they preserve the practice.

The Crisologo Museum sits along A. Reyes Street, Vigan

Continue to embrace the heritage of Ilocos Sur by checking out the classic Crisologo Museum. It is best known for being the ancestral home of the late statesman Floro S. Crisologo, whom it was named after.

However, he was unfortunately assassinated in the 1970s while inside the St. Paul's Cathedral. Despite the tragic event, his wife, Carmeling, and the rest of his family decided not to seek vengeance on his behalf.

Instead, they chose to honor his life and his achievements inside his home. Soon, the family opened the mansion up to the public, and it is now one of the most iconic museums in the Philippines.

Upon entering the first floor, you can find Floro's study and library, which has been filled with news clippings about him and his family. Visitors can even enter the master's bedroom that contains some of his most prized possessions.

The museum's main exhibit is the bloodied clothes the late congressman was wearing when he was shot. Aside from the clothes, an old car is also preserved in the home. It was the same vehicle his wife was riding when someone tried to take her life. Fortunately, the bullet did not hit Carmeling, and she lived until the age of 94 before dying in 2018.

The Cape Bojeador Lighthouse in Ilocos Norte

Cape Bojeador Lighthouse is known for being one of the highest elevated lighthouses in the Philippines that dates back to the Spanish colonial era. The 66-foot-tall octagonal stone tower stands on the country's northwesternmost point, the Vigia de Nagpartian Hill, and overlooks Cape Bojeador in the West Philippine Sea. First lit in 1892, the structure has guided numerous seafarers to safe shores over the years.

While it was constructed years ago, it is still used today and is regularly maintained by staff. Most of its original designs were preserved and remain functional today, but a few modern touches have been fixed to keep it running smoothly.

It initially worked with a Fresnel lens lamp that had to be replaced in the 1990s when an earthquake struck the region. Pressurized kerosene lit the lamp for around a century before it was replaced with solar panels.

The tower, more commonly known as the Burgos Lighthouse, was designed by Magin Pers y Pers back in 1887. However, it was eventually finished by the Lighthouse Service under Guillermo Brockman.

Along with this structure, the two Spanish engineers also built other lighthouses across the Philippines as part of the Spanish government's plan to illuminate the islands. Today, this building is recognized both as a National Cultural Treasure and a National Historical Landmark.

Vigan Cathedral, also called the Saint Paul Metropolitan Cathedral, is one of the most iconic Ilocos churches. Standing in front of the city's Plaza Salcedo, this holy building is hard to miss and has been regarded as one of the must-see tourist spots in Vigan . Due to its proximity to the plaza, many travelers also have their photos taken between the two historical sites.

Juan de Salcedo, a Spanish conquistador, ordered the construction of a temporary church in Vigan back in 1574. At the time, the structure was built with only wood and stalk. The simple building was eventually replaced with a studier one in 1641, the first official Vigan Cathedral.

However, the church was damaged by two earthquakes over the years and was ultimately burned in 1739. Following the series of incidents, the fourth and current version of the cathedral was finished in the 1800s under the order of Augustinian priests.

The whole cathedral boasts a Baroque style, complete with large buttresses on either side. Inside are a silver-paneled altar, 12 minor altars, and brass altar railings. On the other hand, a 25-meter-high bell tower that symbolizes St. Peter sits to the south of the church.

The Patapat Viaduct goes on for 12 kilometers, making it one of the longest bridges in the Philippines. It is located at the foot of the cliff of the Northern Cordillera Mountain Range in the municipality of Pagudpud, Ilocos Norte.

Today, locals pass through it to reach the neighboring province of Cagayan Valley or vice versa. Standing at about 31 meters above sea level, this bridge also offers great scenic views of Pasaleng Bay and the mountains that it passes by.

The current pathway was opened to the public in October 1986. Before the Patapat Viaduct, an etched footbridge in the upper part of the cliff was the only connection between the two provinces. Over the years, it has been dubbed the French Riviera of the Northern Philippines due to the breathtaking sights it provides to people going on Ilocos Norte tours. The Bantay Church Bell Tower sits atop a hill in Ilocos Sur

Another important cultural site in Ilocos Sur and a top attraction in Vigan tours is the Bantay Bell Tower. It dates back to 1591, making it one of the oldest bell towers in the region. Sitting atop a hill that overlooked the Bantay district in northeast Vigan, locals initially used it as a watchtower when fighting broke out in the Spanish era and World War II.

After the wars, it was restored and repurposed as a belfry for the nearby Saint Augustine Parish Church, more commonly known as Bantay Church. Built a year prior to the tower's construction, these two structures are a testament to the rich heritage that has taken place in Ilocos.

Travelers can simply admire the red brick tower from the foot of the hill. Otherwise, you can climb a set of stairs to the tower's entrance and even go up the winding steps inside it. After reaching the top of the belfry, you will find the large metal bell. Aside from the historic bell, visitors are also rewarded with a breathtaking view of the surrounding area.

6. Sand Dunes

When visiting Laoag in Ilocos Norte, make sure not to miss the iconic Paoay Church. Construction of this Roman Catholic church finished back in 1710 after around two decades of work. It is officially named the Saint Augustine Church.

Years after its completion, UNESCO recognized it as a UNESCO World Heritage Site under the "Baroque Churches of the Philippines" group. The national government also honored the church for its historical significance and named it one of the country's National Cultural Treasures in 1973.

After opening its doors in the early years of the 18th century, the church continues to hold masses. Priests currently celebrate mass in English, Filipino, or Ilocano, depending on the schedule.

Situated along Bangui Bay in Ilocos Norte are 26 giant wind turbines that face the West Philippine Sea. These towering white structures were built in three phases. The first phase was completed in May 2005 with 15 initial windmills. Each turbine is 70 meters tall and has three blades that measure up to 41 meters in length.

The Bangui Windmills are the first wind farm in the Philippines and generates enough energy to power more than 40% of Ilocos Norte's electricity. The turbines' energy reaches the province's residents and businesses through the Luzon Grid. Thanks to its strategic location away from forests that can block the wind, the farm has become one of the country's top sustainable sources of energy.

Along with being a more environment-friendly alternative to more traditional sources of energy such as fossil fuels, the wind farm has become a popular tourist spot as well. Must-see Tourist Spots in the province of Ilocos Sur!

Ilocos Sur is the 13 th province I have visited in the quest of visiting all of the Provinces in the Philippines ! (Talk about an 81-province bucket list!) Ilocos Sur has so many similarities to its mother province, Ilocos Norte . Also known for their frugal lifestyle, Ilocanos welcome every visitor with a warm heart.

Known for its Spanish colonial houses and cobblestone streets, the province of Ilocos Sur has so much to deliver – we just have to discover them one by one!

All about Ilocos Sur

Ilocos Sur has a total of 32 municipalities and 2 component cities. Of these, I have so far visited 1 Municipality and 1 component City. When I first set foot to visit the province, I with my friends explored the Heritage City of Vigan .

Vigan , being one of the only two UNESCO World Heritage Cities, is now only one of the few Hispanic towns in the country, preserving its colonial structures and cobblestone streets. The City, too, received an international recognition as one of the new 7 Wonder Cities of the World (alongside La Paz, Beirut, Kuala Lumpur, Doha, Durban, and Havana) in May 2015 by the New7Wonders Organization through public voting.

Ilocos Sur then was once part of Ilocos Norte until it was separated by a Royal Decree as another province on February 2, 1818, hence the names differentiating it from one another.

When arriving in Vigan, you get to see a majority of houses in a mestiza architecture-style – a signature of Spanish Colonial Houses during the early times, preserved through the years.

So without keeping you guys reading any further, here are some of the tourist spots we visited in Ilocos Sur.

Calle Crisologo

Named after one of Ilocos Sur’s illustrious sons, Marcelino “Mena” Pecson-Crisologo , Calle Crisologo earned the reputation of being the cradle of bygone Hispanic houses that has been preserved over time. With its cobblestone strip, the Calle was also once home to the Alta de Sociedad of Vigan.

At present, the Calle is now home to some antique and preserved houses with lots and lots of shops – ranging from restaurants, hotels, souvenir stalls and the like. To get to Calle, ride a tricycle and pay a minimum fare of PhP 10.00 and you will be there in 5 to 10 minutes.

This is also where you will find the most delicious longganisa and empanada anywhere in Ilocos Sur! It’s a must-try!

Plaza Burgos

Plaza Burgos is also named after of the tripartite GomBurZa fathers, Jose Burgos , who is also a native of the City of Vigan. The Plaza has a mid-tall post in the middle containing manuscripts and some information about Father Burgos. Plaza is also adjacent to the Saint Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral.

As the main seat of faith in the archdiocese of Nueva Segovia in Vigan, St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral one of the most celebrated churches in the province. If you will notice, its bell tower features a weather rooster, symbolizing Saint Peter – the first pope of the Catholic Church. The Cathedral has a main altar, 12 minor altars, 3 naves, and brass communion handrails. It also houses some of the archdiocese’s former bishops’ graves.

Named after the one who named the Ilocos provinces, Don Juan de Salcedo , Plaza Salcedo ’s main highlight is the newly-installed dancing fountain which is lit up every night (1900 – 2000 H and 2030 – 2130 H) giving an additional entertain to locals and tourists alike. It is also where Elpidio Quirino ’s monument – another Ilocos Sur native and the 6 th President of the Philippines – is situated. You can also find the big letters of I-L-O-C-O-S S-U-R near the Capitol, perfect for photo-ops!

The capitol is the province’s seat of government. It is also where you will find the marker making the City of Vigan a World Heritage City and one of the newest 7 Wonder Cities of the world. The capitol is just across Plaza Salcedo ! It is also close to baratilyo shops where you get to taste the most delicious sinanglaw (beef innards stew) in town.

Crisologo Museum

This is the house-turned-museum of the Crisologo Clan, starting from their earliest generations. All memorabilia, be it personal or political, can be found in the museum. It even has the car where the former Ilocos Sur governor was nearly ambushed in and was kept intact for the public’s viewing. It is located at A. Reyes Street, Vigan City . It is a 5 to 10-minute ride from Calle Crisologo.

Pagburnayan

After having that 15 to 20-minute walk from the Crisologo Museum , Ilocos Sur’s famous Pagburnayan or ’pot factory’ is now becoming one of the province’s popular tourist spots. As the pots displayed are made locally and on-the-spot (and a lot cheaper than that in Sagada), it has also become one of the province’s main industries. A demonstration on how these pots are made is readily available. No fee is imposed but donations are highly welcome (encouraged.) It is located in Liberation Boulevard.

Bantay Church is a 15 to 20-minute tricycle ride from Pagburnayan . Also known as Saint Augustine Parish Church, it is also referred to as the Shrine of our Lady of Charity. It is believed to be one of the oldest Churches in the Ilocos Region, established in 1590.

Housed within the Saint Augustine Parish Church’s vicinity, this famous belfry was once a watchtower of the town against pirates during the Spanish Colonial Period, hence getting the name “ Bantay ,” meaning “to guard,” which then became the Municipality’s name over time. It was also used as a watchtower during World Wars I and II. On a clear day, you can see the mountains of Abra from afar.

16 Best Ilocos Sur Tourist Spots to Visit

Ilocos Sur is the province in the western part of the Luzon, most populous island in the Philippines.

Vigan is the capital of the province.

It is a beautiful example of a Spanish colonial town in Asia as it showcases old churches and ancestral houses.

Ilocos Sur has a colourful cultural heritage with exciting tourist spots, centuries-old structures and unique dishes.

1. Vigan Heritage Village

Vigan is among the oldest cities in the Philippines.

It is most famous for its Heritage Village and the Calle Crisologo street.

This historic centre dates back to the 16th century and it’s the best-preserved example of Spanish architecture in Asia.

Because of the unique blend of the Philippine’s and Spanish architecture, well-preserved Spanish monuments and rich cultural heritage it has been declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The best way to enjoy the village and its cobblestone streets is riding “calesas” horse-drawn carriages or strolling among the beautiful colonial buildings.

Visit it early in the morning when numerous souvenir shops start to open, or in the evening when it gives off the 18th-century vibe.

2. Dancing Fountain at Plaza Salcedo

The Dancing Fountain is located right at the centre of the Plaza Salcedo.

There is a show starting every night at 7.30 pm.

Lasers and lights dance to music from around the world for about 30 minutes.

It is a perfect place to go and relax after a day spent strolling around.

However, expect crowds since the fountain is an ideal stop-over for the locals as well, and there is a limited place for sitting.

On the other side of the Plaza, there are sprouting fountains where kids usually play around.

3. Bantay Bell Tower

Bantay Bell Tower is the historic belfry of the St Augustine church in Bantay.

It is on a hilltop overlooking the province.

The belfry was once used as a lookout for invading enemy forces.

If you are looking for a postcard-perfect scenery, climb up the Bantay Bell Tower.

You’ll be greeted by a big old bell and breathtaking views at the top.

The belfry is guarded by a small gate which is locked when there are no visitors.

If you want to make sure you can enter, register at the Tourist Centre along Calle Crisologo at Vigan and ask for a tour in advance.

4. Baluarte Zoo

Just 10-minute drive away from Vigan City is the privately owned Baluarte Zoo.

Among caged animals, there are Bengal tigers, pythons, iguanas, camels, deer, as well as ostriches and flamingos.

Visitors can feed monkeys, swans, peacocks, and parrots.

Within the zoo, there is also a butterfly garden where you can admire thousands of butterflies and a track for horse riding.

The zoo is open every day, and the entrance is free.

Besides seeing the animals, you can also have a picnic lunch.

If you are travelling with kids, the Baluarte Zoo is something you shouldn’t miss visiting.

5. Archbishop’s Palace

The Archbishop’s Palace is next to the St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral in Vigan.

It is the only remaining 18th-century palace of this kind in the Philippines.

The residence of Archbishop of Nueva Segovia is in the palace, as well as a museum.

The museum has a collection of religious artefacts and relics from other churches around the region.

Make sure to ask for permission to visit the first floor where you can see numerous painting and learn something about each of the archbishops and bishops of the area.

You can get an entry ticket at some of the offices across the building.

6. Pagburnayan Jar Factory

This jar factory is actually one of the few authentic jar makers in Vigan.

The name of this factory, Pagburnayan, refers to the hand-crafted pots.

It’s fascinating to watch how clay is transforming into pots.

The whole process will undoubtedly be interesting to kids, as well as adults.

You will also get the chance to try to make a pot yourself.

Beware, it’s not as easy at it looks.

Also, if you succeed, keep in mind that it will take a couple of days until it’s completely done.

7. Chapel by the Ruins

When you go at the back of the St Augustine Church, you’ll find a lovely garden, arranged like an open-air shrine.

It is Chapel by the Ruins, serene, peaceful and an ideal place for thinking or praying.

This garden-like chapel is what’s left of one wing of the St Augustine Church.

Locals claim that this was the place where priests were incarcerated during the 1763 revolt against Spaniards.

However, the ruins have been preserved and converted into the chapel.

8. Hidden Garden

Although this place is outside of Vigan, it is still a must-see attraction.

You can get there by car or hiring a tricycle.

There are food stalls and a cafe, surrounded by a beautiful garden.

There is a vast variety of plants, and some of them are for sale.

You can stroll around the area, buy some plants or other souvenirs.

It’s a great place to relax and get a breath of fresh air.

If you decide to eat there, keep in mind that the menu consists of local dishes.

9. Plaza Burgos

Plaza Burgos is one of the two major plazas in Vigan.

It was constructed in honour of Father Jose P Burgos.

He was executed with other clergy reformists due to his protests against inequality of Filipino priests.

Plaza Burgos is a local’s favourite hang-out place.

It’s an ideal location if you want to discover their way of life.

On its far end, you can find food stalls with local specialities including empanadas, their favourite snack.

You shouldn’t leave Vigan without trying the empanada in Plaza Burgos.

To make this gastronomic experience unforgettable, try okoy and the local ice-cream.

Around the square, you can also find various souvenir shops and buy other locally made crafts.

10. Santa Maria Church

Santa Maria Church is officially known as The Church of Our Lady of the Assumption.

It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site as a part of the collection of four Baroque Churches in the Philippines.

In 1769, the picturesque church was built on the top of the hill overlooking the town of Santa Maria.

This massive baroque structure was not just a lookout, but a religious centre of the area as well.

It is also reminiscent of the four centuries of Spanish domination in the area.

However, unlike other churches in the region, it is surrounded by defensive walls like a fortress.

11. National Museum, Magsingal Branch

The museum was once a convent for a ruined church.

It was then upgraded to Magsingal Church before being transformed into a museum in 1982.

This is only a branch of the National Museum, and displays the material culture of the Northern Luzon.

You’ll also see a structure for drying tobacco leaves called “pugon”, and concrete wheel for making pottery jars.

It is about 10 kilometres away from Vigan.

12. St Augustine Church

St Augustine Church is commonly known as Bantay Church or the Shrine of Our Lady of Charity.

It’s a Roman Catholic church, located in Bantay.

This is one of the oldest churches in Ilocos Sur, established at the end of the 16th century.

The exterior is mesmerising, however, inside the church much simpler in design.

At the back of the altar, you can find Virgin Mary crowned by the Pope as the patroness of Ilocandia.

Pilgrims often come to pray to the Lady.

13. Syquia Mansion

The Syquia Mansion was a home of the Philippines’ sixth president Elpidio Quirino and his family.

His wife’s family owned the mansion though.

The Syquia Mansion houses the president’s extensive memorabilia, and it is worth a visit.

Some of the historical and political gatherings took place here.

Marvel at huge rooms and look through the peeping holes used to observe visitors in the receiving area, before allowing them to enter the living room.

The mansion itself is another example of a hybrid of Spanish and Philippine’s architecture.

14. St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is one of the major religious landmarks of the Philippines.

The original structure was made in 1574, but it was just a chapel then.

In 1641 the chapel was replaced by the church, but it was finally completed in 1800.

The cathedral was built in Baroque earthquake style, with strengthened thick walls and massive structure against earthquakes.

When you enter the cathedral, you can admire its interior, the silver-panelled main altar, 12 smaller altars and brass communion rails made in China.

You can also see Chinese characters where the rails connect to the building.

The cathedral’s octagonal design is supposedly rooted in feng shui principles.

St Paul Metropolitan Cathedral is close to Plaza Salcedo and Plaza Burgos.

15. Crisologo Museum

The Crisologo Museum is small but houses a lot of memorabilia, and antiques.

If you want to understand the political atmosphere in the Philippines in the ’70s, then this museum is a must.

Floro Crisologo was the congressman who was killed by an unidentified gunman inside the St Paul Cathedral.

To honour him, his family converted their century-old family mansion into a museum.

It gives you the opportunity to peek into the past.

You can see the antique carriage and an old car that are still being used as a movie prop.

Floro Crisologo’s wife survived an assassination attempt in them while being pregnant.

There is also a book collection, news clippings about Crisologo’s death, and even the clothes he wore when he was assassinated, covered in blood.

16. Padre Burgos House – National Museum

Padre Burgos House is a satellite of the National Museum, and one of the important historic buildings in Vigan.

As a young priest, Father or Padre Burgos fought for the equal rights for Philippine’s clergy.

However, he was executed by the Spanish in 1872 with two other martyr priests.

Father Burgos house is actually the old two-story house where he was born.

It is close to the St. Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, and it houses an extensive collection of his memorabilia, including photographs, old books and family antiques.

You can also enjoy the series of 14 paintings by Esteban Villanueva of the 1807 Basi Revolt.

Ilocos Sur is a region full of exciting attractions.

It’s like a door to the past, from cobblestone streets to factories that celebrate pottery making.

Historic buildings and an architectural blend of cultural elements from the Philippines and Spain will leave you speechless.
