Improving urban mobility through human-centered livery design .

Anthony Harding & Carrie McEwan

Anthony Harding

Senior Exterior Livery Designer

Carrie McEwan

Principal Human Factors Specialist

A vehicle’s livery — design jargon for “paint scheme” — may seem inconsequential to some, but when it's applied to a fleet of over a thousand vehicles across a large urban area, the littlest choices can have dramatic effects on a system’s ease-of-use, carbon emissions, and safety. This is why, even when it comes to a paint scheme, Teague centers the user experience in our design process.

Teague is home to some of the most experienced livery designers in the world, having collaborated with Boeing for 77 years and produced award-winning work including the new livery for Air Tahiti Nui , the iconic Salmon Thirty Salmon and Orca liveries for Alaska Airlines, and "Disney Magic" for WestJet. In addition to our work on planes, our team has been involved in livery design for cars, trucks, buses, aircraft, and even spacecraft.

Recently, we partnered with King County Metro, one of the largest transit systems in the United States, to create a new livery design for their local and regional bus service and their bus rapid transit service called RapidRide. These new designs, celebrating their admirable transition to an all-electric fleet, will breathe new energy into the streets of King County and the greater Seattle area.

Human-centered design begins with listening.

No two livery projects are ever the same. Vehicles come in all shapes and sizes, and painting liveries can be complex. That’s why our approach begins with research: we gathered insights from stakeholders across King County Metro and its community partners, which were then used to define design drivers, trend studies, and user experience criteria.

Rider feedback indicated that a new livery should have a purpose and support riders’ understanding of the transit system, with clear, visible indication of the route and key.

We found that King County Metro’s previous livery design system was complicated and inconsistent. Buses and trolleys were variously dark green, light green, blue, purple, and red without clear reasoning. Stripes appeared in different shapes, angles, and were not consistently applied from model to model, owing to the idiosyncrasies of different vehicle shapes which created installation challenges for the paint team. Despite 20 years of implementation, the existing design did not have an agreed-upon “iconic image” in the mind of King County Metro users.

Not having a consistent image has a direct effect on a system’s ease-of-use. Think of all the bits of information a user must keep track of on their daily commute: "What's that sign say? What’s my route number? Is that my bus?” Rider feedback indicated that a new livery should have a purpose and support riders’ understanding of the transit system, with clear, visible indication of the route and key.

Interviews and engagement with the maintenance and paint team.

Learning how current designs are done; the advantages of wraps vs. paint.

Reviewing the paint colors with the team.

Showing the ‘Metro Yellow’ to ‘New Energy Yellow’ evolution.

Showcasing sustainability efforts.

We also heard from King County Metro employees a strong sense of pride in their “office” on the bus and their desire to celebrate the new all-electric fleet. For years, King County Metro has “walked the walk” in its sustainability goals by being an early adopter of battery-electric buses and electric trolleys. Yet the existing livery design did not clearly highlight these achievements. Internal stakeholders made clear to us the desire to brighten the mood, celebrate its positive future, and make the transition to a zero-emissions fleet unmissable .

The King County Metro team had an internal goal to stand out from other transit groups in the area, but also reflect the culture and values of King County. We wanted to avoid overused “green” design motifs, such as leaves, electric plugs, and swooshes which add unnecessary complexity and no longer resonate with consumers due to their association with greenwashing. Instead, the new design communicates new energy with striking use of color and eschews complex art in favor of a clean, simple approach that reduces the number of colors, and therefore, paint waste. Brighter colors will also reflect heat, which helps extend battery life and potentially improves range-per-charge.

Design that communicates to all riders.

Interviews with the King County Metro Equity Cabinet also revealed the need for the new design to increase accessibility, because the system serves residents and visitors who come from different backgrounds and speak hundreds of different languages. We solved for this by decluttering design elements, reducing verbose English language markings, and emphasized a clear, iconic appearance to keep the design easy to remember.

About the colors: New Energy Yellow and RapidRide Red.

Centering the user-experience led us to a single design layout rendered in two colors: New Energy Yellow for neighborhood service, and RapidRide Red for bus rapid transit service. Each color has a clear purpose, and the livery becomes iconic by staying consistent with these expectations.

New Energy Yellow is a sharp color that can cut through the blues, greens, and grays of our region, maximizing the vehicle’s ability to stand out in all environments, all weather conditions, even when seen from a distance. The RapidRide design is simplified to fully capitalize on its pre-existing luscious red. This continued use of yellow and red, King County Metro’s historical colors, honors the legacy of people and communities who gave our region its thriving transit bus network. And while honoring the past, the future is embraced: because only the news buses will feature these colors, seeing these designs populate our streetscapes will be clear visual evidence of King County Metro’s transition to a renewable energy future.

In both versions of the livery, brightness is emphasized due to King County Metro’s commitment to safety for both bus riders and non-riders. We wanted to make sure drivers, cyclists, and pedestrians would be able to easily see the bus, so we integrated reflective safety stripes in the window silhouette.

Less is more.

The final livery design was informed by asking the right questions of stakeholders. From this foundation, we can explore all possibilities and find a solution that is truly centered on improving the user experience, which in the case of King County Metro, involves everyone who occupies the streets of our region. In our exploration, we created dozens and dozens of potential design schemes, but what we discovered in our partnership was the affirmation of a long-held design principle: Less is more.

Buses of Somerset

If you saw our recent blog post ‘ 10 UK bus liveries we really, really miss’ , you’re probably also aware of the tidal wave of ‘Hey, what about London and Country?!’ comments it generated. Part 2, however, is for another day – today, we’re focussing on the present.

This was an incredibly difficult ‘top 10’ to curate, with so many excellent liveries and colour schemes prevalent throughout the UK in 2016. In pulling together this list, it has become apparent that liveries are no longer simply glorified wallpaper for buses. There has been a seismic shift in terms of the way operators think about their brands. Driven in part by the excellent creative work undertaken by Ray Stenning’s Best Impressions (for which we make no apology that their work rightly dominates our top 10), today’s most forward-thinking brands are all about enhancing the customer experience.

Without further ado, let’s jump right in…

10. Buses of Somerset

Buses of Somerset 32961 - MIG4761

Inspired by the leafy green orchards and cider farms of beautiful Somerset, First’s shift towards establishing strong regional identities across its UK bus operations is evident here.

9. Brylaine

Brylaine Travel. Boston. Lincs T680 KPU in Boston.

Often forgotten and always under-appreciated, Lincolnshire operator Brylaine’s bold colour scheme is clean, modern, chunky and robust.

8. Stagecoach Gold

Stagecoach Gold

Stagecoach really was the pioneer in creating a template for ‘business class’ interurban bus travel, which has now been rolled out in a number of locations across the UK. The gold and royal blue exterior, combined with interior mood lighting and coach-style seating really helps to distinguish these vehicles from their ‘beachball’ cousins.

7. Lothian Buses

Lothian Buses 286 | BF63 HDC

Lothian’s livery is truly versatile and lends itself well to almost any type of vehicle, particularly the latest offerings from Wrightbus.

6. Bluestar

Go South Coast (Bluestar) 2735 HF65CXH in Southampton on service 18 duties.

There’s something deeply satisfying about the shade of blue used for the Bluestar brand. The latest incarnation of the brand sees a tasteful thin yellow vertical stripe delightfully picking out the subtle route branding.

5. Stagecoach X5

Stagecoach Cambus 54318 YX64WDD at Milton Keynes Railway Station.

Perhaps one of the most eye-catching, jaw-dropping liveries ever to grace a coach. However, it’s not the only branding applied to the stunningly curvaceous Plaxton Elite which has made this list…

4. Arriva Sapphire

Arriva The Shires 5469 SN15LPZ in Oxford nearing the end of its working on a 280 service from Aylesbury.

First we had Gold, and now we have Sapphire…Arriva’s sparkling premium bus brand dangles the commuter a carrot, squarely aimed at tempting potential customers out of their cars.

3. Red Arrow

Trent Barton: 82 / YX65 ZHM 'Prancer'

Trent Barton’s revised Red Arrow literally stole the show at Coach and Bus Live 2015 ( check out our round-up of that event ). On the streets of Nottingham and Derby, there is quite simply nothing else to compare it to – it commands respect in every way imaginable.

2. Stagecoach Falcon

*Launch* Stagecoach South West YX65VXV

Yes, it’s a triple whammy for the Elite as Stagecoach South West’s striking ‘Falcon’ brand swoops in at number two. The triadic colour scheme is delightful; the powerful bright green beautifully picks out the Elite’s unmistakeable rounded features.

1. Transdev Harrogate’s 36

Transdev Harrogate & District 3623 BL65YYW turns into Kings Rd with a 36 Leeds - Harrogate service.

If you came here hoping to be surprised, we’re very sorry to disappoint. Let’s face it – there’s only one bus operator which has truly ‘redefined’ vehicle branding in 2016 – Transdev in Harrogate with their  36 . Perhaps Best Impressions’ finest hour to date, it’s hard to see what, if anything, is going to come along and beat it – until the next incarnation of the 36 lands, of course.

So, that’s our ‘top 10’ of all that the current UK bus scene has to offer – which liveries would make your list? We’d love to know – write in the comments below, or drop us a tweet @transportdsn.

And before you go – how about a trip down memory lane ?

Love this article, I have to say that I like the liveries on them all, but I have to bias with the 36 aswell. That must have taken some time to whittle down the liveries, good work.

Thanks Scott! Not an easy task by any stretch of the imagination!

What a great article, certainly given me some inspiration for a future post. I too echo Scott’s comment, it isn’t easy getting so many unique and inspirational liveries down to a list of 10, I certainly agree with the majority of your listing.

Ah, thanks for your kind words Tom! Look forward to seeing what you come up with 🙂

See also, every heritage livery ever.

Agreed! Somebody please do a GM Buses heritage livery!

Great selection! All look good …. if kept clean. Red Arrow is brilliant.

I’m sorry but every single one of those is without exception awful. They all suffer from clashing colours, swoops that don’t follow the lines of the vehicle, and/or silly garish branding. The Buses of Somerset is probably the best of that bad bunch but still has a silly name. No wonder enthusiasm for buses is waning if this is the best our livery designers can do.

As for what I think should be number one, it unbelievably doesn’t even get a mention here. I’m talking about The Delaine’s classy and restrained traditional livery that hasn’t changed for decades and still looks elegant on modern vehicles.

The Delaine almost made it in here, I agree, it’s a really beautiful livery that has stood the test of time. Others were also very close – Ensign a notable example.

While I think it’s very harsh to say they’re awful, they do all look very similar. Swooshes and swirls everywhere.

Which is why we’re trying to show that liveries can be different, modern and stylish…

http://www.mhdpartnership.co.uk/

Well done looks really good with how you done it all

Although I agree with most of these being well up there in a top twenty liveries, I cant see how the Brylaine livery gets into the list. Just look too jarring and overly fussy. As much as I like the simplicity of the Bluestar livery I am not convinced it can go down at such a high position in the list either. The Falcon is stunning though and would be my number one. One that I am surprised to see not in the list is Travel West Midlands who have a few schemes that are right up there amongst the best – the Platinum version being stunning

Thanks for your comments Graham – agreed, could have easily compiled a top 20 with everything out there at the moment! Brylaine makes it in purely because it’s so different to anything else at the moment, it’s bold and almost badly designed, but unapologetically so. I’m personally not a huge fan of NXWM Platinum – I think it will date very quickly, and compared to some of the other ‘premium’ brands which have made this list it’s more of a ‘NX slightly upgraded’. See – not a fan of absolutely everything Best Impressions! 🙂

Actually NX platinum is not Best Impressions, they have their own in house designer.

Moscow is the financial and political centre of Russia and the countries formerly comprising the Soviet Union. It has a population of around 13 million and an area of 2,511 square kilometres (970 sq mi) after an expansion in 2012. One-tenth of all Russian citizens live in the Moscow metropolitan area. Moscow is the second most populous city in Europe, after Istanbul , and has the most populous metropolitan area in Europe, with some 21 million residents. Moscow is in the UTC+3 time zone; there is no daylight saving time.

Many years since the break up of the Soviet Union, the economy has improved, and the modern era has brought upon a wide variety of construction projects, modern architecture and newer transport systems replacing the derelict ones during Soviet times.

Geography [ edit ]

Moscow is a large metropolis on the Moskva River, which bends its way through the city. The historical center is on the northern bank of the river. The other major waterway is the Yauza River, which flows into the Moskva east of the Kremlin.

Much of Moscow's geography is defined by the 3 'Ring Roads' that circle the city at various distances from the centre, roughly following the outline of the walls that used to surround Moscow. With Red Square and the Kremlin forming the very centre, the innermost ring road is the Boulevard Ring ( Bulvarnoye Koltso ), built in the 1820s where the 16th century walls used to be. It runs from the Christ the Savior Cathedral in south-west central Moscow, to the mouth of the Yauza in south-east central Moscow.

The next ring road, the Garden Ring ( Sadovoe Koltso ), derives its name from the fact that landowners near the road in Tsarist times were obligated to maintain gardens to make the road attractive. In Soviet times, the road was widened, and there are now no gardens there.

The Third Ring Road, completed in 2004, is not much use for tourists but is a heavily used motorway which absorbs a bit of Moscow's traffic. It roughly follows the outline of Kamer-Kollezhsky val , the customs boundary of Moscow in the 18th – early 20th century. The outer edge of Moscow is largely defined by the Moscow Ring Road (widely known by its abbreviation: MKAD-Moskovskaya kolcevaya avto doroga), a motorway which is 108 km (67 mi) long and encircles the entire city (similar to London's M25 and Paris' Périphérique ).

Climate [ edit ]

The climate of Moscow features warm summers and long, cold winters.

Get in [ edit ]

See Russia#Get in for visa requirements to Russia.

By train [ edit ]

travel bus livery

Moscow is a railway hub, with connections to all parts of Russia and far into Europe and Asia. Due to its hub status, Moscow's train stations are often crowded; trains are the usual form of intercity transport for most Russians. The stations have a reputation for being unsafe but paradoxically the threat of terrorism has improved things: security gates, policing and surveillance deter the casual thugs and villains. Guard your valuables and yourself as you would in any big city.

All long-distance trains are operated by Russian Railways and its subsidiaries, except for a few international trains with other operators. Tickets can be bought at stations or online . For domestic trains, you can show the ticket officer your online boarding pass; however, international trains require a printed ticket. There are usually ticket counters with English-speaking personnel - they may be marked as such, or the clerk may direct you to another counter if they can't cope with your English. See Russia#By train 2 for more details on travelling in Russia by train.

From Europe [ edit ]

All trains from Europe halted since 2020

Train stations in Moscow [ edit ]

Moscow has 10 train stations, 9 of which are near metro stations close to the center of Moscow. Be sure to note the station from which your train is departing, which will be indicated on the ticket, or online . Three stations ( Leningradsky , Yaroslavsky , and Kazansky ) are on one huge square, informally known as the "Three Stations' Square". A running joke among Moscow taxi drivers since the Soviet times is to be able to pick up a fare from one of them to the other, taking the unwary tourist on an elaborate ride in circles. Be prepared for enormous queues trying to enter or exit the Metro at peak times, as people are getting off or on the commuter trains.

By car [ edit ]

Many entry points to Moscow over the Ring Road and into the city feature rotating roadblocks, where teams of traffic police may stop a vehicle, especially if it is not featuring Moscow plates. You may be stopped and questioned but you'll be allowed to proceed if you have all the proper documents.

Foreign cars, especially expensive cars, might attract unwelcome attention, and there is cumbersome paperwork involved to enter Russia by car.

By boat [ edit ]

There is no scheduled passenger service to Moscow by boat; however, cruise ships do provide service to the Northern River Terminal, on the Moscow Canal near the Khimki Reservoir. The pier is not convenient to the city and it can take over 2 hours to reach the city centre by car.

A system of navigable channels and locks connects the Moskva River with the Volga River, which is further connected to the Baltic Sea , White Sea, the Azov, the Black Sea, and the Caspian Sea. In the Soviet times this allowed the official propaganda to refer to Moscow as "a port on the five seas".

By bicycle [ edit ]

Moscow is the easternmost destination of the EuroVelo cycling routes . Eurovelo Route 2 , the Capitals Route, is a 5,500 km (3,400 mi) route starting in Galway , Ireland , passing through Dublin , London , Berlin , Warsaw and Minsk before terminating in Moscow.

By metro [ edit ]

travel bus livery

The Metro is open from 05:30-01:00. Station entrances are closed at 01:00, and at this time the last trains depart from all of the termini stations. After 01:00, many locals will enter the train station using the exits, which are still open. Service on the ring line runs until 01:30, although entrances are closed at 01:00. The down escalators are also shut off at 01:00.

There is signage in the Metro stations in English and the Latin alphabet, but these signs are not everywhere. Each train carriage has a map in Latin script and there is one near the entrance to each station. Note the direction of the train before you alight. It is worth printing a map of the metro system in both Cyrillic and Latin letters to take with you.

All trains in the system have free WiFi onboard, but you will need to have a Russian phone number to get the authorization code to access the WiFi. Some of the older train cars are not climate controlled.

2 or 3 stations may be connected as transfer points but will each have a different name. There are 2 stations called Smolenskaya and 2 stations called Arbatskaya , but the station pairs are not connected to each other despite having the same name. Some of the stations are very deep underground, and transfer times between certain metro lines can take a lot of time. In the city centre, it can save time to go directly to the above-ground entrance of the line you want to take rather than to enter at a connecting station and transfer underground. On the escalators, stand on the right and walk on the left except for peak hours, when standing on the left side is also allowed.

Some of the train stations include beautiful architecture and it is worth taking a guided tour of the metro system. The most interesting stations in terms of decor are Komsomolskaya (ring line), Novoslobodskaya (ring line), Kievskaya (ring line), Kropotkinskaya (Line #1 - red), Kievskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Arbatskaya (Line #3 - dark blue), Ploschad' Revolyutsii (Line #3 - dark blue), Mayakovskaya (Line #2 - dark green). Also look at the architecture of the ground entrance building of Arbatskaya (Line #4 - light blue) and Krasnye Vorota (Line #1 - red). History buffs may appreciate that Metro Line #1 (red) has the oldest stations, opened in 1935.

The Vorobyovy Gory Metro Station on Line #1 (red) is unique in that it is on a bridge crossing the Moscow River. This bridge also carries auto traffic road on another level. There is a beautiful view through the transparent sides of the station. A great observing point around Moscow is located nearby on Vorobyovy hills, next to the main building of Lomonosov Moscow State University.

There are a couple of unique trains operating through the system and you will be lucky if you get to ride them. Aquarelle (Watercolor) is a train that includes an art gallery. The train operates daily on Line #3 (dark blue). The Sokolniki Retro Train is a train modeled after the original 1930s trains and it occasionally is placed into service, usually around a major anniversary of the metro system.

The metro is relatively safe, although pickpockets are a problem, as they are in any environment where a lot of people are pressed together. Opportunistic petty crime, such as snatching someone's mobile phone and jumping out just as the doors are closing, is also commonplace. Take the usual precautions at night when gangs of inebriated teenagers may look for an excuse to beat someone up. There is no train guard or conductor, so the first car near the driver may be the safest. Every car is equipped with an intercom to the driver's cabin; they are beige boxes with a grill and a black button near doors, and mostly work, unless visibly vandalized.

By tram [ edit ]

There are several tram routes, although trams are not common in the city centre.

By monorail [ edit ]

Moscow Monorail is a 4.7 km (2.9 mi) monorail line with 6 stations. It is slower, less frequent, and has shorter operating hours when compared with the metro (every 30 min, 08:00-20:00). However, the view is picturesque. It is useful to get to the Ostankino Tower, or to get to the VDNKh exhibition centre from Metro Line #9 (silver). Interchanges between Moscow Metro and Monorail is free, no additional fee will be charged.

By hop-on-hop-off bus [ edit ]

The hop-on-hop-off bus is a convenient way for tourists to see the major sights quickly and efficiently. The buses feature English-speaking guides to answer any questions. A 1 day pass costs $24 for adults and $15 for children.

See [ edit ]

Do [ edit ].

Moscow has many attractions, but many of them are not friendly to a non-Russian-speaker. English-language newspapers like The Moscow Times , Element [dead link] , Moscow News and others can help to navigate towards English-language friendly attractions and services.

Circuses [ edit ]

Theatres [ edit ].

  • Bolshoi Theatre , one of the oldest and best known ballet and opera companies in the world.

Learn [ edit ]

travel bus livery

Moscow remains the educational center of Russia and the former USSR. There are 222 institutes of higher education, including 60 state universities & 90 colleges. Some of these offer a wide-spectrum of programs, but most are centered around a specific field. This is a hold-over from the days of the USSR, when Sovietwide there were only a handful of wide-spectrum "universities" and a large number of narrow-specialization "institutes" (mostly in Moscow & St.Petersburg). Moscow offers some of the best business/management, science, & arts schools in the world. Moscow is also a popular destination for foreign students to learn Russian.

Work [ edit ]

You will need a work visa which is not an easy process. The visa needs to be arranged well in advance of traveling. It is possible to work in Moscow, you just need to find a good company to support you. The main obstacle for many foreigners will be a mandatory Russian language exam required to obtain a work permit.

Shopping malls [ edit ]

Large shopping malls are common near metro stations.

Tipping [ edit ]

For information on tipping in restaurants, see Russia#Eat .

Ethnic food [ edit ]

Authentic ethnic food from countries of the nearby Caucasus ( Azerbaijan , Georgia , Armenia ) is common in Moscow. Japanese food, including sushi, rolls, tempura, and steakhouses are very popular in Moscow. Other Asian cuisines including Vietnamese, Thai, and Chinese are becoming increasingly more common.

Budget [ edit ]

Street food [ edit ].

Free-standing kiosks serving sausages, meat pies, or kebobs are plentiful, although the origins of the meat served is questionable and the food has been known to occasionally make people sick.

Muscovites are also fond of their ice cream, consumed in any weather, even in the dead of winter, cheap and usually of superior quality; kiosks can be found all over the center and near all Metro stations.

Foodcourts 2.0 [ edit ]

This term is used in articles by local food critics: since 2016, several special food courts were opened with independent and small food chains, for those people who get bored of McDonald's-like food. They offer a wider choice of cuisines.

Clubs [ edit ]

Nightlife in Moscow is bustling, intense and exciting. It starts quite late; it's common for the headliners to start at 02:00-02:00. Most noticeable are areas near Solyanka street and Krasniy Oktyabr' place. At summer time a lot of clubs opening open-air terraces called "verandas". Most of clubs in Moscow are very picky of who they let in, so make sure you have a positive attitude and dress up if you are going to a fancy club.

Gazgolder [dead link] (not far from Kremlin) is among the best.

Cafes [ edit ]

Moscow has several café chains with great coffee including Coffeemania and Coffee Bean [dead link] . Moscow also has a good selection of tea saloons. High-quality infusion teas such as Newby, are widely available in cafes, both in packets and loose.

Asking to add boiling water to the tea you ordered earlier is a practice that some cafes don't welcome, but normally it's acceptable.

Sleep [ edit ]

Stay safe [ edit ].

Moscow enjoys a relatively low crime rate.

travel bus livery

Drunk people are the most likely sources of problems. In the past years, lots of policemen were corrupt, and it was best to avoid them. Nowadays Moscow has a Tourist Police force, whose officers are able to speak foreign languages and help tourists. Police officers are equipped with body-cameras.

It is preferable to avoid some parts of the outer districts of Moscow, especially in the south. Some of those areas are notorious for gopniks (drunkards notorious for muggings and starting fights with strangers, and will do so seemingly unprovoked), who normally hang out in sparse residential areas and in industrial zones. The same problems can be witnessed in the surrounding regions and in other Russian cities as well.

While traveling in Moscow, as in the rest of Russia, you should always have your passport with you. If you look non-white, your papers may get checked more often than otherwise. The police may demand to see your papers to check if you have been registered within 7 business days of your arrival into Moscow. Always remember that if you stay in a hotel then you are automatically registered and will be handed a confirmation paper at a time of check-in, so don't worry in this case. The police are usually looking for migrants from Central Asia and unless you fit this profile, you are unlikely to be questioned.

Women should take caution walking alone late at night since they may receive unwanted attention from drunk men. Women should also stay clear of large companies of men in front of bars, restaurants, etc. It is best to walk with a friend if possible.

Streets can become very slippery in winter. Wear shoes or, even better, boots with decent grip to prevent twisted ankles. Ice patches can be hard to spot. A waterproof raincoat is also sensible.

Traffic is poorly handled, and vehicle accident rates are very high.

If you need help with translation, ask students or pupils: younger people are more likely to be able to help you than the older generations.

Connect [ edit ]

For information on using telephones and buying SIM cards in Russia, see Russia#Connect .

Mobile Internet is quite affordable in Russia, but you have to buy Russian SIM-card first.

Wireless Internet [ edit ]

Moscow Metro has Wi-Fi in all trains. It is ad-supported.

Mosgortrans has Wi-Fi spots on every bus, trolleybus and tram. Also sometimes you can find Wi-Fi spot on a public transport stop.

Beeline Wi-Fi [dead link] operates the largest network of both paid and free Wi-Fi access points. If there is a charge, you can pay online via credit card.

There is a large network of free Wi-Fi hotspots in the city centre; check your device in the middle of a busy area and you may find one.

Many cafes and restaurants offer Wi-Fi - ask for password. Most bookstores offer free Wi-Fi, including "Dom Knigi" on New Arbat Street or "Respublika" bookstore on Tverskaya near Mayakovskaya Metro Station.

Some establishments that offer free Wi-Fi may require you to verify an authorization code sent to a Russian phone number before gaining access, but for the most part, foreign numbers also work as of 2016.

Cope [ edit ]

Embassies [ edit ].

Moscow is one of the global diplomatic capitals, competing with Berlin , Brussels , Beijing , Paris , London , Tokyo and Washington D.C. . Most of the world's countries have their embassies in the city.

New Bus Livery

Legislation requires that the National Transport Authority “shall for the purposes of promoting public transport, design, develop and secure the implementation of a single brand to be used by all public transport operators providing services in accordance with a public transport services contract with the Authority.”

Under the BusConnects Dublin programme, the exterior and interior of buses, known as the bus livery, will be standardised across different operators to give the bus system the feeling of a modern, effective public transport system.

The new Transport For Ireland (TFI) livery conveys the image of a modern, effective transport system and assists with ensuring that the experience is consistent across all operators providing Public Service Obligation (PSO) transport services. Initially, the rollout of the new TFI livery will be focused on new buses and coaches entering the PSO fleet and on routes that are launching as part of the BusConnects Dublin bus network redesign, but it will eventually also be deployed nationwide.

The fresh green color will serve to convey the TFI brand, sustainable travel and a sense of Irishness. It has been designed specifically to align with the look of new bus stops and other information channels to present a unified overall experience to passengers.

The vibrant yellow color at the front is intended to enhance visibility, particularly at night.

The white flow lines along each side are designed to evoke a sense of rapid but smooth movement, whilst the white leaf motif towards the rear of both sides signifies the environment and our natural evolution towards more sustainable transport modes.

The new unified look will become more prominent over the coming months and years as further new vehicles are added to the PSO fleet and as existing vehicles enter their established repaint cycles.

During 2021 approximately 93 coaches, 280 new hybrid buses and 87 existing buses adorned with the new livery will make an appearance throughout Ireland and these numbers will grow in the following years.

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow Bus Network

Moscow's crazy traffic and its excellent metro network mean that the city's buses and trolleybuses aren't the number one option for tourists .

Moscow has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes , many of which connect the city centre with its otherwise-isolated suburban neighbourhoods. Regular traffic jams mean that the bus network has not always been the most recommendable option , especially as the metro is so efficient.

Having said that, new bus lanes have opened up recently making it a comfortable alternative for certain routes. The bus can be a good, economical option at night , when 13 routes replace the metro after it shuts down (all starting from Kitay-Gorod metro and taking the main roads out to the edge off the city).

More modern buses have screens indicating the stops along the route, but in older ones you may well struggle knowing where to get off if relying on the Russian-language loudspeaker announcements .

If you do decide to catch the bus, tickets can be purchased from kiosks and metro stops, and the majority of lines operate between 6 am and 1 am.

Walking. The geolocation of your accommodation in Moscow is important, because the distances are great. You’re definitely not going to be able to do it all on foot. Moscow is the largest city in Europe with more than 12 million intramural inhabitants. Besides, Moscow is made for giants, because everything is big: the avenues, the buildings, the metro stations! So, the place of your accommodation is very important. You can check our blog post: Where to stay in Moscow?

Good to know! We have written 2 other blog posts that could be helpful: Maps of Moscow and Moscow Airport Transfer.

Public transport in Moscow: prices and how does it work?

Even if you are going to be able to visit many interesting places around Red Square (see the article: Moscow Red Square ), you will certainly take the metro to get around, but also to see the most beautiful stations . Furthermore, among public transport the metro remains the fastest solution in Moscow.

Good to know! Public transport is free for children under the age of 7. More specifically, 1 adult may not purchase a ticket for 1 child under the age of 7. If you are 2 adults, it is therefore for 2 children that the trips will be free.

Tips for Moscow city transport

Here are my tips to make travel more pleasant and optimized:

  • Avoid to take Moscow City transport during rush hours. Especially for ground transportation (lots of traffic jams). You will lose a lot of time, especially for city center trips by land transport. Peak hours correspond to office hours: the standard working day begins at 9 a.m. and ends at 6 p.m.
  • Use a mobile application to estimate your journey time as accurately as possible. In Europe, as in Russia, we use CityMapper . It is a free application that allows you to calculate your trips and see all the possibilities to get from one place to another. For the application to work, you must have an Internet connection: either through your French package which can prove to be expensive; either by wifi, in your hotel, in a cafe (very common in Moscow) or by using the free Wi-Fi of the city of Moscow! To download CityMapper on your mobile, just type its name in AppStore or GooglePlay . Then choose the city where you want to use it.
  • Buy a transportation card. If you plan to take public transport several times a day or if you come to Moscow for a university or work exchange, it is more economical to take a transport card. I talk about it later in the article.
  • Further info about airport transfer here: How to get from airport to Moscow?

Moscow metro: the fastest way to get around Moscow

Beautiful! The Moscow Metro is considered the most beautiful in the world! You can find out which stations are worth a visit in my article: The most beautiful stations in Moscow .

Metro timetables. Times vary by station, but approximately the Moscow Metro is open from 5.30 a.m. to 1 a.m.

Below you can find a map of the Moscow metro, with an example of a metro station. You can find other Moscow maps here .

Metro prices in Moscow

  • A single trip = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • Price for transporting a suitcase in the metro = 60 rubles
  • With a transport card , the price of the journey decreases. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about troika card below.
  • You can also pay with ApplePay or GooglePay.

Where to buy metro tickets?

  • At the cash desks , where you can buy everything: transport card or one-way tickets. Small flat: most of the time, the employees of the metro do not speak English very well. But they are used to it, you will be able to understand each other.
  • At the English terminals , where you can also buy everything. See below for more details on terminal purchases.

Moscow City transport taxi

Bus, trolleybus, tram in Moscow

Avoid at peak hours. The city center can be literally blocked! Mobile applications are very useful to estimate travel times.

Tram. Trams are very nice to do. It’s a bit special. Tram stops are hard on the road. The cars then stop and let the pedestrians get on or off the tram.

Price of a bus, trolleybus or tram ticket

  • One way = 57 rubles (from February 1, 2020)
  • With a transport card , the price drops. Example: with the Troika card the price per trip increases to 40 rubles. More details about transport cards below.

Where to buy bus, trolleybus or tram tickets?

To drivers. There are no controllers on each bus, as in St. Petersburg.

By purchasing a transport card in advance at a metro station. There are few terminals installed near bus, tram or trolley stations.

Good to know! It is possible to pay on the metro, but also on buses with your smartphone or a contactless card (Apple Pay or Google Pay)! The price is 44 rubles per way. Beware, however, of bank charges, as for other ruble payments in Russia. See article: How to pay in Russia?

Transport cards in Moscow

Two most interesting solutions for taking Moscow City transport:

troika card

Troika card prices

  • 1 metro, bus, trolley bus or tram journey: 40 rubles (instead of 57)
  • 90 minutes in public transport (regardless of the number of changes): 62 rubles

How to buy a Troika card?

  • Cost of purchase : 50 rubles. You can get it at all metro stations.
  • Refill . Once the card is purchased, you must reload it. You can choose the amount freely.
  • Where? It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card.

The Troika card is interesting if you:

  • want to take advantage of lower transportation rates.
  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, VIE, university exchange), but do not go for frequent daily trips.
  • don’t stay long, but you know roughly how many trips you’re going to make or you don’t mind reloading the card often. Why? It is possible, but long and complicated to recover the initial amount of 50 rubles, as well as the rest on the card.

How much does the unlimited Yediny card (central Moscow area) cost?

  • 1 day = 24 hours = 230 rubles
  • 3 days = 438 rubles
  • 30 days = 2170 rubles
  • There are no unlimited cards for 2, 4, 5, 6 or 7 days.

More details: Moscow transport website

How to buy a Yediny card?

It is possible to buy the card and recharge it at the metro cash desks or via automatic terminals, in cash or by bank card. The card is activated (the countdown starts) at the time of validation and not at the time of purchase. The card must be activated within 10 days of purchase (day of purchase included).

Here are the pictures of the automatic terminal (in English), when buying a Yédiny card.

travel bus livery

The Yediny card is interesting if you:

  • stay in Moscow for a long time (language stays, expatriation, university exchange), but make frequent daily trips.
  • do not stay in Moscow for a long time, but do not want to estimate your trips in advance (Troika card) while enjoying the unlimited.

Our experience with transport cards in Moscow

When I was working in Moscow, I used the Troika card. It was the most economical solution for me. We also used it later when we both went there. On the other hand, the last time we were there, we took the Yediny card and finally we found it more practical, even if it turned out to be less economical in the end.

Our verdict (compared to our travel habits): budget side, the Troika card is better. But for less headache (how much to put on the card? How much is left?…), The unlimited Yediny card is more practical.

Boat trips in Moscow

There are several boat trips on the Moskva River. In addition, it is even possible to buy an unlimited day ticket. For more information, you can then consult the article: Take a boat trip on the Moskva River.

Getting around in Moscow by taxi

There are several types of taxis in Moscow:

  • First, official taxis (sign on the roof);
  • Then individuals who do this out of the blue;
  • And finally Moscow taxis via mobile applications (private drivers or taxi agencies).

Good to know. The cost of a taxi ride to the city center in Moscow is around 500 rubles. If you want to avoid negotiations, use the taxi apps in Moscow.

Uber Moscow: NO.

It works before, but not anymore, because Uber does not use the classic app in Russia (they have created a special app for Russia, only this app works now). So, you have to download the special Uber Russia app… but this application is only available on the Russian AppStore, so it cannot be downloaded for us. Uber’s competitors in Russia such as YandexTaxi or Gett can be used.

Use the YandexTaxi app to take a taxi in Moscow

The Yandex company is the Russian Google. Initially a search engine, it also offers several services. YandexTaxi is then the taxi service in Moscow, it works everywhere in Russia. You can download the app from the AppStore or GooglePlay . Thanks to this application, it is possible to pay the taxi in cash (by default) or by bank card directly (to be specified in the application). If you are thinking of paying in cash, then have rather small denominations so that the driver can give you change. The application is now in French.

How does YandexTaxi work?

  • First, it detects your geolocation.
  • Then you indicate your arrival position using the Latin or Cyrillic alphabet.
  • It then offers you the estimated prices for each range (thrifty, business, etc.).
  • You choose, confirm and wait for the driver to arrive.
  • You identify the driver with the indicated license plate, then at the end YandexTaxi collects the race via your bank card (do not forget to put your card info before using the app, otherwise pay in cash).

Other solution. You can also book a taxi in advance on KiwiTaxi website . It’s easy!

Yandex Taxi Moscow

Public transport and taxi in Moscow: summary

Getting around Moscow is quite simple, as Moscow City transport is well developed. However, because of traffic jams, the metro is the quickest solution. It isn’t an issue, because the Moscow metro is very clean and beautiful. Taxis are rather cheap and easy to find thanks to mobile applications like, for example, YandexTaxi.

  22. Moscow Bus Network

Moscow has hundreds of bus and trolleybus routes, many of which connect the city centre with its otherwise-isolated suburban neighbourhoods.Regular traffic jams mean that the bus network has not always been the most recommendable option, especially as the metro is so efficient.. Having said that, new bus lanes have opened up recently making it a comfortable alternative for certain routes.
