A land of snow-capped mountains, mirror lakes and lush forest, New Zealand comes up on many travelers’ bucket lists .

Before you book your flights, however, it’s important to make sure you have all your paperwork in order. We've got all you need to know about whether you need a visa to travel to New Zealand this year.

You may not need a visa but you will need a NZeTA

Residents of Australia  do not need a visa to travel to New Zealand and can easily visit the country. Australian residents can also stay in New Zealand for as long as they like.

In addition, certain  countries and territories have visa waiver agreements with New Zealand, including the USA , the UK  and most European countries. This means that residents from these countries do not need visas to visit New Zealand for up to 90 days.

To enter the country, residents of visa waiver countries need to fill out an  Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA ) before arriving in the country. These can take up to 72 hours to process, so visitors need to fill out the form online before they leave for New Zealand.

Apply online for a visitor visa

Residents of countries that don't have a visa waiver agreement with New Zealand will need to apply for a visitor visa , which allows tourists to spend up to nine months in the country. The easiest way to do this is online. Visas take at least a month to process, so be sure to apply well in advance of your planned trip.

All visitors to New Zealand must have enough funds to cover their stay and proof of onward travel. They must also hold passports that are valid for at least three months after their planned departure dates.

There are restrictions on what you can bring into New Zealand

As an island country, New Zealand has many rare plants and trees, and a strong commitment to biosecurity. To protect its unique environment, there are strict rules about what is and is not allowed in the country.

Any items which could present a biosecurity risk need to be declared when entering the country, including food, plants, animal products and outdoor equipment. Hiking boots and outdoor gear should be cleaned thoroughly prior to arrival. Travelers should check the guidelines before traveling and ask border staff if they have any doubts about the items they are carrying.

New Zealand offers working holiday visas

For those wanting to stay a little longer,  working holiday visas are available to young people from many different countries. These are usually open to people aged 18 to 30 (or 18 to 35 for some nationalities) who want to travel and work in New Zealand, and are usually valid for up to 12 months, or 23 months for travelers from Canada and 36 months if you're from the UK.

New Zealand Visa for Tourists in 2024: A Comprehensive Guide

Updated: February 28, 2024

New Zealand Visa

New Zealand’s visa policy for tourists is incredibly simple as there are only two ways to enter.

Many travelers are visa-exempt in which case they need to get an NZeTA online. Everybody else needs to apply for a Visitor Visa.

This article summarizes all the important information about the New Zealand visa for tourists and the relevant details.

Table of Contents

Visa policy and visa types.

Australians are visa-exempt to travel, live, and work in New Zealand for an indefinite period under the Trans-Tasman Travel Agreement.

Citizens of 60 countries and territories are on New Zealand’s visa waiver list. However, all of them must apply for the NZeTA before traveling.

All other nationalities must obtain a Visitor Visa.

Everyone except for Australians and people from the Pacific Island countries must pay an International Visitor Levy fee included in the NZeTA or Visa cost.

Visa Requirements

New Zealand Visa Requirements by Nationality

Passport validity required

Your passport must be valid for at least 3 months after the intended departure date from New Zealand.

  • Be of good character (not have a criminal record and not having been deported from any country)
  • Have a return or onward ticket

The NZeTA is valid for 2 years after it’s granted. It allows stays of up to 90 days except for UK nationals who can stay up to 6 months.

There is no limit to the times you can enter New Zealand. However, you cannot stay longer than 6 months in any rolling 12-month period (even for UK passports).

The price of the Visitor Visa depends on your nationality. It is between 171 and 246 NZD. The International Visitor Levy is included in this price except for exempt Pacific Island nations (see below).

For more information, read the complete guide on New Zealand Visitor Visa for eligibility, requirements, documentation and application process.

Benefits of a New Zealand visa

New Zealand visa also works as a substitute visa for traveling to other countries. As of 2024, you can travel to 12 countries with a New Zealand visa. Read this article on  VISA-FREE countries for New Zealand visa  to learn how to visit these 12 countries.

Transit Visa

Transit without leaving the airport is only available at Auckland International for up to 24 hours. You would either need an NZeTA or a Transit visa.

Transits longer than 24 hours are not allowed at Auckland airport. If your transit is longer than 24 hours, you will clear immigration. You would need a Visitor Visa or NZeTA( if from a visa-waiver country) in that case.

NOTE Airports in New Zealand, except Auckland International Airport, do not have transit zones. That means, transiting at airports in New Zealand other than Auckland International Airport requires clearing immigration. You would need a Visitor Visa or NZeTA (if from a visa-waiver country).

Transit with NZeTA

The following nationalities require an NZeTA to transit at Auckland International Airport.

  • Must remain in the transit zone unless you’re from a visa-waiver country
  • Must remain in the transit zone
  • Can also enter NZ

Transit visa waiver countries

  • Marshall Islands
  • Papua New Guinea
  • Philippines
  • Solomon Islands

A transit visa does not allow entry to the country, it’s strictly meant for transiting at Auckland International Airport. The transit period must be less than 24 hours.

Application and cost

Nationalities that require a transit visa can apply online on the New Zealand Immigration portal . A transit visa costs 180 NZD.

Below is the summary of transit visa requirements for New Zealand.

For more information, read the complete guide on New Zealand Transit Visa for requirements, application process and transit procedure at the airport.

International Visitor Levy

Visitors to New Zealand must pay a fee for conservation and the maintenance of tourism infrastructure. This fee is called the International Visitor Levy (IVL). It is 35 NZD per person.

The IVL is included in the price of the Visitor Visa or added to the cost of the NZeTA when applying. It is payable once per visa/NZeTA, NOT per entry!

Visitors from these countries and territories are exempt from paying the IVL:

  • American Samoa
  • Cook Islands
  • Pitcairn Islands

New Zealand Traveler Declaration (Arrival Card)

All travelers must complete a traveler declaration before reaching passport control. You can complete it either online at the New Zealand Traveler Declaration website or on paper at the airport.

Pay close attention to the requirements to declare certain items. New Zealand has very strict biosecurity protocols and failure to declare even otherwise safe items may lead to instant fines or more severe penalties.

NZ Tourist Visa: Do You Need a Visa to Visit New Zealand?

A guide to the tourist visa (visitor visa) and the nzeta for new zealand.

It’s no secret that the New Zealand borders are pretty strict. Nevertheless, the vast majority of visitors to New Zealand. i.e. people visiting to travel and explore, do not need to apply for a Visitor Visa (Tourist Visa) before arriving in the country. They do, however, need to pay for the NZeTA . Alternatively, there are certain nationalities that will need to apply for a Visitor Visa before arrival. Sounds complicated? We aim to break it down and make the visa process easier to understand in this guide to visas for visiting New Zealand.

What is a Visitor Visa For and How Long Can You Stay in New Zealand on a Tourist Visa?

“Visiting” New Zealand refers to someone temporarily staying in New Zealand without working in the country. The maximum time you can stay in New Zealand as a visitor depends on what country you are from. Read our quick guide below to find out what you need to visit New Zealand.

You Do Not Need to Get a Tourist Visa if…

If any of the following circumstances apply to you, you do not need to apply for a visitor visa (tourist visa) to New Zealand. Some of them are pretty darn obvious, but we will list them to cover all the bases.

  • You are a New Zealand or Australian citizen
  • You have a New Zealand resident visa
  • You have a New Zealand permanent resident visa
  • You have an Australian permanent residence visa
  • You have an Australian resident return visa (excludes Australian temporary or provisional residence visa)
  • You are from a visa-waiver country (see below).

There are also exceptions for people, for example, who are air flight crew, military, cruise ship passengers, etc. You can find more information about that on the Immigration New Zealand website .

Visa-Waiver Countries: Which Countries Do Not Need a Visa for New Zealand?

Some countries have an agreement with New Zealand and their citizens are allowed to come to New Zealand for three months to travel without having to go through the process of getting a visa . As you can see, there are heaps of countries on the visa-waiver list. We have listed them by continent to make finding your country easier.

Andorra, Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, Czech Republic, Denmark, Estonia, Finland, France, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Iceland, Latvia, Liechtenstein, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malta, Monaco, Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Romania, San Marino, Slovak Republic, Slovenia, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland, United Kingdom (6 months allowance), Vatican City

North America

Canada, United States of America

South America

Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Mexico, Uruguay

Middle East

Bahrain, Israel, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates

Brunei, Korea (South), Hong Kong, Japan, Macau, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan

South Africa, Seychelles, Mauritius

List date: 2023. For the full list please refer to the official visa waiver countries page .

New Zealand Visitor Visa Requirements: Conditions for People from a Visa-Waiver Country

From a visa-waiver country? That’s great! This means you don’t have to apply for a visa before you come to New Zealand. However, there are a few things you should be aware of before arriving in the country.

You must make sure you:

  • have paid the NZeTA and IVL (see section below)
  • complete the “ Traveller Declaration ” during the flight to New Zealand or online 24 hours before travel
  • have a passport that is valid three months beyond the date you intend to leave New Zealand
  • have evidence for sufficient funds and onward travel (see the section below)
  • stay in New Zealand for nine months or less in an 18-month period
  • have no intention of studying or working in New Zealand (for that, you would need a working holiday visa or student visa , for example).

Please note that, as a citizen of a visa-waiver country, your visitor visa will be granted at the airport on arrival in New Zealand. It will usually be electronic, meaning that you may not get a visa stamp or label on your passport.

The NZeTA and IVL

Travellers from visa-waiver countries might not have to physically apply for a visitor visa for New Zealand but they do have to request and pay the NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) and IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) before arrival.

How Long Does it Take to Get an NZeTA?

It is best to request them as soon as possible, as it can take up to 72 hours for an NZeTA approval.

How to Get an NZeTA

There are two ways of paying for the NZeTA and IVL:

  • Through the Immigration New Zealand Android or Apple App
  • Through the Immigration  New Zealand website form .

How Long is the NZeTA Valid?

The NZeTA and IVL are valid for multiple visits and transits to New Zealand for up to two years.

For more information on the NZeTA and IVL, take a look at the  What You Need to Know About the New Zealand ETA & Visitor Levy and the 10 Things You Need to Know About the NZETA .

Evidence of Sufficient Funds and Onward Travel for Visitors and Tourists

Whether you have a New Zealand tourist visa (visitor visa) or an NZeTA, you will need to prepare some documents to present to the immigration officer on arrival in New Zealand. It’s true that these documents are not always asked for, but the time you risk it will no doubt be the time that you need the documents. You will need evidence of onward travel and evidence of sufficient maintenance funds while you are in the country.

What Type of Onward Travel Evidence is Accepted?

  • Travel tickets (can be confirmed or open-dated) out of New Zealand.
  • Written confirmation from an airline or travel agency that onward travel is booked and paid.
  • Anything that demonstrates a confirmed departure from New Zealand , like a yacht or private aircraft departure.

How Much Funds Do You Need to Visit New Zealand?

In other words, how much money do you need in your bank account to go to New Zealand? You need to provide evidence to show you have either NZ$1,000 per month that you intend to stay in New Zealand or NZ$400 per month with evidence that you have paid for accommodation. ( Learn more about the New Zealand currency here ).

What Types of Fund Evidence are Accepted?

  • Bank drafts
  • Bank statements in your name
  • Letters of credit
  • Photocopies of travellers’ cheques.

Not from a Visa-Waiver Country?

… then you will need to apply for a new zealand tourist visa (visitor visa) before arrival.

Sure, it’s a bit more hassle, but nothing that a bit of forward planning can’t handle.

How to Get a New Zealand Tourist Visa (Visitor Visa)

Those from countries not listed on the visa-waiver list must print and fill out the Visitor Visa Application (INZ 1017) form and send the paper application to your nearest Immigration New Zealand office. You can find the address on the Office and Fee Finder . Your visitor visa must be accepted before you enter New Zealand.

In order to complete the visitor visa application form, you need the following:

  • The appropriate fee (see the Office and Fee Finder )
  • Two passport-sized coloured photos
  • Your passport or travel document
  • If required, a medical and x-ray certificate (in most cases it is not required)
  • Evidence of sufficient funds to support your stay (see the section above)
  • Evidence of onward travel (see the section above).

Note that those who have to apply and pay for a visitor visa are not required to pay the NZeTA and IVL .

How Long Does it Take to Get an NZ Visitor Visa?

Processing times for visas fluctuate but Immigration New Zealand is known for processing 90% of Visitor Visa applications within 37 weekdays. See the latest processing time on this page of the Immigration New Zealand website .

New Zealand

Entry requirements.

This advice reflects the UK government’s understanding of current rules for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK, for the most common types of travel.

The authorities in New Zealand set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the New Zealand High Commission in the UK .

COVID-19 rules

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering New Zealand.

Passport validity requirements

To enter New Zealand, your passport must have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave. If you’re travelling through another country on your way to or from New Zealand, check the entry requirements for that country. Many countries will only allow entry if you have at least 6 months validity remaining on your passport. Renew your passport if you need to.

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been reported lost or stolen.

Visa requirements

You do not need a visa to enter New Zealand if you are a visitor staying less than 6 months. You do need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ).

At New Zealand border control, you will also need to show that you meet the criteria for visa-free entry:

  • proof of a return or onward ticket
  • proof that you have enough money for your stay

Check the full criteria on New Zealand Immigration .

New Zealand has strict immigration rules, particularly on employment. Visitors cannot work in New Zealand.

New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA )

If you are entering without a visa, you need a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority ( NZeTA ) before you travel. You will also need to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy when you apply.

Allow up to 72 hours for it to be processed. Your NZeTA is valid for up to 2 years.

Applying for a visa

Check the visa options and costs on New Zealand Immigration .

To extend your visa, first check your visa expiry date on the New Zealand Visa Verification Service . See further information from New Zealand Immigration on how to apply for a visa extension .

Travelling through New Zealand

You will need to get a NZeTA before you travel if you are travelling through New Zealand to another country.

In most cases, transit passengers must hold an NZeTA or transit NZeTA before travel.

Vaccination requirements

At least 8 weeks before your trip, check the vaccinations and certificates you need in TravelHealthPro’s New Zealand guide .

Customs rules

There are strict rules about goods you can take into or out of New Zealand. It is illegal to import most food products. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty.

Some products, including wood products, golf clubs, footwear, tents, fishing equipment and items made from animal skin, can carry harmful pests or diseases. Check what items you are permitted to bring into New Zealand . If in doubt, declare items to a Biosecurity New Zealand official or dispose of them in one of the marked bins available at the airport.

If you break any of these rules you could get a fine of up to 100,000 New Zealand dollars or a prison sentence.

Winter (June to August) transforms the South Island into a skiing haven. Spring and autumn? They’re the sweet spots for pleasant weather and fewer crowds.

Before packing your bags, ensure you have your paperwork sorted. Most travelers need a visa, and it’s always wise to check New Zealand’s immigration website for the latest requirements. The e-visa process is swift, but don’t leave it for the last minute. Plan ahead to avoid any hiccups and ensure a smooth entry into this Kiwi wonderland.

Getting to and Around New Zealand

Once there, renting a car is an excellent option for flexibility. However, the well-connected bus and train networks are worth considering if you prefer a more leisurely approach. The journey is as important as the destination, after all!

Who is it for

Check if you need an NZeTA or a visa before travelling to New Zealand.

Most travellers need either an NZeTA or a visa to travel to New Zealand. This depends on the passport you are travelling on, and if you will be a visitor or a transit passenger .

Check if you need an NZeTA or a visa

You can use your NZeTA to travel to New Zealand multiple times while it is valid. An NZeTA is valid for 2 years for travellers, or 5 years for crew members.

You may not be allowed to visit or transit New Zealand if you do not meet the good character requirements. If you are not sure you will meet the requirements — for example you have a criminal conviction — you should apply for a visa and have one before you travel. Check the character requirements under 'What you need to apply'.

What you need to apply

Visiting new zealand.

'Visiting' means you are entering and staying in New Zealand as a visitor.

If you are passing through a New Zealand airport — other than Auckland International Airport — on your way to another country, you will be a visitor because you have to enter New Zealand.

If you already have a current New Zealand visa, you do not need an NZeTA.

If you give the wrong information in your NZeTA request, we may give you an NZeTA that only lets you transit through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger  — you cannot visit New Zealand as a transit passenger.

Arriving on a cruise ship as a passenger

If you are arriving by sea as a cruise ship passenger, you must have an NZeTA — unless you are on the list of travellers who do not need an NZeTA. You can be any nationality.

Travellers who do not need an NZeTA

Arriving by cruise ship

Citizen of a visa waiver country

If you are travelling on a passport from a visa waiver country, you must have an NZeTA — unless you are:

  • on the list of travellers who do not need an NZeTA, or
  • coming for medical treatment or consultation — you will need to apply for a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa, not an NZeTA. Medical Treatment Visitor Visa

Visa waiver countries and territories

Australian citizen or permanent resident

Australian citizen.

If you are travelling on an Australian passport, you do not need a visa or NZeTA before you travel. We will normally give you an Australian Resident Visa when you arrive — but you must meet the character requirements of this visa.

Australian Resident Visa

You may not be allowed to travel to New Zealand if you do not meet the good character requirements. If you are not sure you will meet requirements — for example you have a criminal conviction or have been deported before — you should apply for a visa and have one before you travel.

Australian permanent resident

If you are an Australian permanent resident wanting to visit New Zealand, you must have an NZeTA — unless you are on the list of travellers who do not need an NZeTA.

You also need:

  • a current Australian Permanent Resident Visa or Australian Resident Return Visa — these cannot be 'provisional' visas, and
  • travel conditions on that visa to let you return to Australia.

Other visitors who need a visa

You must have a valid visa before you travel to New Zealand, if you are:

  • not a citizen of a visa waiver country or territory
  • not an Australian permanent resident
  • not arriving on a cruise ship, and
  • not on the list of travellers who do not need an NZeTA.

If you are coming to New Zealand for medical treatment or consultation, you need to apply for a Medical Treatment Visitor Visa, not an NZeTA.

How long you can visit for

When you arrive at the New Zealand border with your NZeTA, we may give you a visa that lets you stay:

  • up to 3 months at a time, or
  • up to 6 months at a time if travelling on a UK passport.

We usually give Australian permanent residents and citizens an Australian Resident Visa.

Your visa expires when the 3 months or 6 months have passed — or if you leave earlier. When you arrive in New Zealand next time with an NZeTA, we give you a new visitor visa.

You can only be in New Zealand for up to 6 months within any 12-month period. This period is the 12 months counting back from your intended departure date (when you plan on leaving New Zealand).

You are travelling on a passport from Canada. This means you can stay in New Zealand for visits of up to 3 months. You visit for the first time for 3 months, from 1 January 2023 to 31 March 2023. After your visit, you return home.

You decide you want to make a second visit, again for 3 months. You plan to arrive in New Zealand on 1 July 2023, and leave on 30 September 2023 (your intended departure date). This means you will be in New Zealand for a total of 6 months in the period 1 October 2022 to 30 September 2023 — this is the 12-month period counting back from your intended departure date.

You can make this visit because you will be in New Zealand for no more than 6 months in that 12-month period. Refer to Figure 1.

Calendar showing example time in New Zealand between 1 October and 30 September 2023.

After your second visit you return home. You decide you want to visit New Zealand again for the whole month of November 2023.

You cannot make this third visit because you will be in New Zealand for a total of 7 months in the period 1 December 2022 to 30 November 2023 — this is the 12-month period counting back from your intended departure date. You can only spend a total of 6 months in New Zealand in any 12-month period. Refer to Figure 2.

Calendar showing example time in New Zealand between 1 December 2022 and 30 November 2023.

Transiting to another country through Auckland International Airport

Some travellers can use an NZeTA to transit Auckland International airport as a transit passenger  on their way to another country. You can stay in the transit area for up to 24 hours and cannot visit New Zealand. Auckland International Airport is the only airport in New Zealand where you can be a transit passenger.

If you are passing through a different New Zealand airport on your way to another country, you will be a visitor not a transit passenger. This is because there is no transit area, so you have to enter New Zealand. Refer back to the section on 'Visiting New Zealand'.

Check who needs an NZeTA, a Transit Visa or neither to transit through New Zealand.

Transit passengers

Crew member of a cruise ship or commercial airline

You need to get a Crew ETA through your employer if you are a crew member of a:

  • cruise ship — this includes if you are flying in to join the ship in New Zealand, or
  • commercial airline.

How to request a change to your NZeTA

We usually process NZeTA requests within 72 hours — many are processed faster, but some may take longer. To avoid delays, you should request an NZeTA well before you travel.

The criteria and evidence below will provide you with the information you need to meet the requirements of an NZeTA.

View All Evidence

You must provide proof of your identity

We use your passport details to check your identity.

You may not be allowed to check in to your flight if your passport is close to expiring. Check that it will not expire while you are in New Zealand or close to when you plan to leave New Zealand.

Before you travel to New Zealand

You must be in good health

You must be of good health. When you request your NZeTA you will be asked whether you are coming to New Zealand for medical consultation or treatment.

If you want to come for medical consultation or treatment, you need to apply for a ‘Medical Treatment Visitor Visa’ before travelling to New Zealand.

You must be of good character

When you request your NZeTA, you will be asked some questions about your character.

You may not meet our good character requirements if any of the following apply:

  • you have a criminal conviction
  • you have been deported, removed or excluded from another country
  • we have reason to believe you may be a risk to New Zealand's security, public order or public interest.

If you are visiting New Zealand, you must meet all the requirements to get a visa and entry permission.

You must not be a person described in sections 15 and 16 of the Immigration Act 2009:

Section 15 Certain convicted or deported persons not eligible for visa or entry permission to enter or be in New Zealand – New Zealand Legislation

Section 16 Certain other persons not eligible for visa or entry permission – New Zealand Legislation

Australian citizens and permanent residents who are visiting New Zealand must meet the character requirements of the Australian Resident Visa. Australian Resident Visa

Other visitors must meet the character requirements for temporary visas. Good character for temporary visas

If we have reason to believe you are not of good character, you will not receive a NZeTA.

People who may be considered a risk to New Zealand’s security, public order or public interest, include those who are registered sex offenders or associated with a gang.

If we have reason to believe you are not of good character, we can stop you from travelling to New Zealand at check-in, or refuse you entry permission when you get here.

If you are not sure you will meet our requirements for good character, you should apply for a visa before coming to New Zealand.

You can be any nationality if entering New Zealand as a cruise ship passenger

We use your passport to check your citizenship when you request your NZeTA.

Arriving by plane

You must be a citizen of a visa waiver country if entering New Zealand by plane

In transit through Auckland International Airport

You must be a citizen of a visa waiver country or transit visa waiver country if passing through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger on your way to another country

If you are from any other country, you can get an NZeTA if you are passing through Auckland International Airport as a transit passenger on your way to or from Australia.

Transit passengers must remain in the transit area at Auckland International Airport.

Transit visa waiver country

You must have enough money to live on while you’re in New Zealand

You must have at least NZD$1,000 for each month of your stay, or if you have already paid for your accommodation, NZD$400 for each month of your stay.

You may be asked for evidence you will have access to your funds when you check-in or arrive in New Zealand.

If you are pregnant, there are additional requirements.

Paying for maternity care

You cannot meet the funds requirement for visa waiver travel by arranging a sponsor. If you want to arrange sponsorship , you have to apply for a visa before you travel to New Zealand.

Onward travel

You must have a ticket out of New Zealand

When you check-in, you will be asked to present your travel ticket out of New Zealand to a country you have the right to enter .

Your departure date must be within 3 months of your arrival, or if you are from the United Kingdom, within 6 months.

If after you leave New Zealand you will be travelling to a country that also has an onward travel requirement, we may ask to see that ticket too.

Your tickets must be paid for before your travel.

If you will be leaving on a private craft or cruise ship, we will accept a letter from the craft owner or a cruise itinerary as proof of your travel arrangements.

If your only reason for coming to New Zealand is to renew a visa for another country, we recommend that you apply for a visa before travelling.

Time in New Zealand

You can only visit New Zealand for up to 6 months in any 12-month period.

We will check our records to see how much time you have spent in New Zealand.

If you do not meet this requirement, you must apply for a visitor visa and have it before you travel to New Zealand.

Relationship with family

Your family must meet the same requirements to travel to New Zealand with an NZeTA.

To travel to New Zealand with an NZeTA, your family must:

  • be in good health
  • be of good character
  • be bona fide applicants
  • be citizens of a visa waiver country – except if arriving by cruise ship
  • have enough money to live on while in New Zealand
  • have a ticket out of New Zealand to a country they have the right to enter .

Genuine intentions to visit, study or work in NZ

Evidence that you are a genuine visitor

If family members do not meet the requirements they should apply for a visa before visiting New Zealand.

Process and costs

Find out the process, timeframes and costs of requesting an NZeTA, based on your passport and if you are visiting or transiting. Visitors must pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL).

We cannot display any process or costs information until you have provided your personal details. Enter your details in the panel above to view information relevant to your situation.

When you arrive

You need to apply for entry permission and meet the conditions of the visa we give you.

As part of the declaration, you apply for a visa and entry permission . We check your identity and other information to make a decision.

Australian permanent residents may get an Australian Resident Visa.
