Patagonia travel FAQs

Do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Patagonia?

Patagonia is a geographical region located at the southern tip of South America.

It spans the lower sections of Argentina and Chile and is governed by both countries.

Do I need a visa to visit Patagonia?

You will need to organize your visa. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information.

Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date information specific to your nationality.

Check the Essential Trip Information section of the itinerary for more information.

What is the weather like in Patagonia?

Patagonia is much cooler than the rest of South America. With diverse terrain ranging from glaciers to mountains and coastlines, the region sees extreme variations in weather.

Average temperatures range from 48-64°F in summer and 32-43°F in winter, but sub-zero temperatures are common.

The weather can be unpredictable at any time of year, and it feels much cooler when there are strong winds.

Snow is possible towards the end of autumn (May), and continues into winter with heavy snowfall down south and in the mountains.

When is the best time to visit Patagonia?

October to March (spring/summer) is considered to be the best time to visit Patagonia; this is when most of our trips run. During this period, daytime temperatures average up to 72°F, but it's a chilly 39°F at night.

Rain and strong winds are possible at any time of year and can make the temperature feel much cooler.

Is tipping customary in Patagonia?

Tipping in Patagonia is common, but only when you’re satisfied with the service.

Aim for 10-15% of a bill at a restaurant or cafe as a general guide (if it’s not included already).

It’s also common to give hotel porters, drivers and other staff a small tip.

What is internet access like in Patagonia?

You will find wi-fi in most hotels, cafes and restaurants in large towns and cities, but it can be harder to find as you venture to more remote areas.

You may wish to buy a local SIM card if you want to stay in contact with folks at home, but a phone signal can still be patchy in remote areas.

What are the toilets like in Patagonia?

You will find Western-style flushable toilets in Patagonia.

It is a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they’re not always provided.

Just note that while the toilets are modern, the plumbing isn’t and can clog easily, so you may see signs asking you not to flush toilet paper and use the bin provided instead.

What is ATM access like in Patagonia?

ATMs are available in larger towns and cities but are less common in small villages or rural areas.

Make sure you have enough cash before leaving urban areas.

Argentina uses the Argentinean Peso, while Chile uses the Chilean Peso. It might also be worth bringing some US dollars.

Can I use my credit card in Patagonia?

Credit cards may not be accepted in small towns and rural areas.

Make sure to carry enough cash when visiting rural areas in case credit cards are not an option.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

  • Warm Seasons - November to March: The optimal time for travelers who seek warmer temperatures and the activities that are best enjoyed during this time falls between November and March. During these months, Patagonia basks in warmth, and daylight extends generously across both the Chilean and Argentine sides. Nights are remarkably short, lasting just six hours, though occasional night frosts and sleet may still visit the highlands even during the summer months. For a quieter experience amidst the spring blossoms, mid-November to mid-December offers fewer crowds.
  • Cold Season - June to August: Winter in Patagonia, from June to August, may not be the best time for outdoor adventurers seeking hiking and trekking experiences. However, it does offer its unique charm. This is the best time to visit Patagonia if you're drawn to the solitude of snow-covered landscapes and want to try your hand at winter sports like skiing and snowshoeing. The lack of crowds and the dramatic icy landscapes make it a special season for those seeking a quieter, more introspective Patagonian experience.
  • Transitional Seasons - Spring (October to November) and Autumn (March to April): In the transitional seasons, Patagonia undergoes fascinating transformations. Springtime in Patagonia, from October to November, ushers in a sense of renewal as the region awakens from its winter slumber. This is one of the best times to go to Patagonia if you prefer milder weather and fewer crowds. Spring offers crisp air, blooming landscapes, and wildlife returning to their breeding grounds, making it an excellent season for hiking and trekking through the picturesque trails of Torres del Paine and Los Glaciares National Parks. As autumn arrives, from March to April, the landscapes transform into a tapestry of warm, earthy hues. You will find Patagonia at its most colorful, showcasing vibrant autumn foliage while ushering in fewer visitors. The northern regions maintain some warmth compared to the south's milder temperatures. This is the best time of year to visit Patagonia for photographers and travelers who relish tranquility, with pleasant weather and opportunities for outdoor pursuits.
  • Ushuaia, Argentina   - a 3.5-hour flight from Buenos Aires also has 1.5-hour flights to El Calafate (or a 24+ hour bus ride!). Only 4 flights per week to Punta Arenas or a 12-hour bus + ferry ride complicate international transport. Airport: Ushuaia – Malvinas Argentinas International Airport (USH)
  • El Calafate, Argentina - a 3.25 hour flight from Buenos Aires is the access point for Perrito Moreno Glacier, El Chalten & Glacier National Park. With no flights to Punta Arenas, a 5 hour bus ride to Puerto Natales, then 3 hours to Punta Arenas. El Calafate's airport is Comandante Armando Tola International Airport (FTE).
  • Punta Arenas, Chile - located on the Strait of Magellan, is a 3.25 hour flight from Santiago. Buses/cars to Puerto Natales (2 hours) is the access point for Torres del Paine. Airport Presidente Carlos Ibáñez del Campo International Airport (PUQ).

Antares Patagonia

Patagonia Travel Agency

Talking about Patagonia is not just talking about Torres del Paine, but about a vast territory between Chile and Argentina, being one of the most remote and impactful ecosystems on the planet.

We Can Help You Plan a Trip to Patagonia Chile & Patagonia Argentina

At Antares Patagonia we know the Patagonia area, and we have more than 20 years experience as a Chile adventure tour company to offer unique tourism experiences to our clients. Not only do we offer a Torres del Paine tour of the National Park, but also in other corners of Patagonia, places of incalculable beauty that allow endless options.

Where is Patagonia Located and How do I Get to Patagonia ?

Chilean Patagonia is mainly located in the Magallanes region and the Chilean Antarctic. The southernmost part of the country, and is characterized by being an immense bioregion with a varied geography and rich in ecosystems and landscapes: Mountains, lakes, fjords and glaciers. It is recognized worldwide by Torres del Paine, one of the first biosphere reserves, declared by UNESCO in 1978. For its part, the Argentine Patagonia, the border sister of the Chilean Patagonia, is known for its great natural wealth, which mainly highlights its spectacular Perito Moreno Glacier, in the southern ice field and Mount Fitz Roy or Chaltén, located in The limit with Chile. You can reach Patagonia from anywhere in the world, accessing a direct flight from Santiago de Chile to Puerto Natales, city of entry to Chilean Patagonia. In our travel agency we make sure that your arrival and stay in this amazing place is unique and unforgettable. We have more than 15 different tour options in large part of Patagonia. To visit the southern tip of Chile and Argentina, you must be clear that the weather in Patagonia is a key factor to consider when planning your trip. Low temperatures, rain and a changing wind that reach high speeds predominate. On both the Chilean and the Argentine side, you can visit places of incalculable beauty, which allow endless activities. Without a doubt, the must-see in Patagonia must be the Torres del Paine National Park. You can explore it partially in 4 days or in its entirety, in an amazing stay of 12 days, in which you can combine different activities, such as Patagonia trekking tours , hiking Patagonia tours, kayaking and cycling.

Our Patagonia Travel Packages can Include the W Circuit in Patagonia

At Antares Patagonia, we recommend you to make the famous circuit of the W. Whose name is due to the shape of the tour. The itinerary consists of 4 to 6 days and we assure you that you will not see anything like it in any other part of the world. Among its main attractions are the Gray Glacier and the Mirador Torres. We offer you different options to do this route. For example, the “Valleys of W” program, in which you will live the adventure of this tour through its valleys. Starting with a trek to Base Torres, the iconic Torres del Paine postcard (8 hours round trip), following Lake Pehoe to the French Valley. The most beautiful of this National Park and where you can cross lenga forests and marvel at breathtaking views of the Paine Massif. Also, you will walk along the enchanting Gray Lake (3-4 hours, 11 kms) and observe the Gray Glacier and the icebergs that emerge from it. We will visit the glacier and lake viewpoint to dazzle us with the vibrant blue color of its icebergs. Finally, we take you on a catamaran for two hours of sailing through this magical lake surrounded by ice. If you do not want to stick to an established tour, we help you organize your own W itinerary. Adapted to your pace, budget and tastes. There is nothing reserved for this tour, so you can experience different options of travel (trekking, bicycle, combined), accommodation (shelters, hotel, camping) and we even offer you the option of a carrier if you want to do the W No backpacks or weight. We seek to provide you with maximum comfort and safety, to make this an unforgettable trip and fulfill all your expectations.

Patagonia, Argentina

A free expert guide to Patagonia Argentina

Patagonia's barren but breathtaking lands are dotted with huge estancias where you can learn to ride with the gauchos, fish in stunning mountain scenery, or just sit back and contemplate the mesmerising expanse of Argentine wilderness. In the winter, it is possible to go skiing in the mighty Andes.

As well as riding and fishing (see Where to Stay ), Patagonia offers the traveller vast stretches of countryside to explore. The Atlantic coast is rich in marine life, most easily seen around Puerto Madryn and on the Peninsula Valdés. In the south is the Parque Nacional de los Glaciares where you can go trekking and take boat trips on lakes full of ice floes and to the Moreno Glacier. The Chubut Valley is home to Argentina's Welsh community: stop off in Trelew for a Welsh tea at one of the tea rooms.

NB: If you are unfit, the cattle drive can be quite gruelling. When choosing an estancia, check out who runs it, the quality of the horses, the standard of service and the cattle drive itself (distance covered, food and drink provided, equipment included), so you know exactly what to expect. If you just want a small taste of the action, there is always the rounding up of cattle round the estancia at other times of year.

The best time to go for riding and fishing is in the Argentine summer, which runs from November to April. The cattle drives take place twice a year, at the beginning and end of the season, in November and April. November is best, as the end of springtime weather is generally pleasant, the days are long, and the scenery in the region of Patagonia is spectacular. In April, as winter creeps in, the weather becomes unpredictable and the cows tend to move more slowly (because they are fatter). The days are also shorter, which means that much of the cattle drive is done in the dark. For skiing, go between July and early October.

Russia's Nuclear Deterrent Command Center Imperiled by Winter Freeze—Report

A Russian nuclear deterrent command center in Moscow has been imperiled by power outages that have impacted more than one-quarter of the region's cities amid freezing temperatures, a Russian Telegram channel has reported.

The VChK-OGPU outlet, which purports to have inside information from Russian security forces, reported that the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings—part of the Russian Space Forces, a branch of the country's Aerospace Forces—near Solnechnogorsk in Moscow is without power.

It serves as the space forces early warning network against potential ballistic missile attacks.

The development comes as Russians are reported to be suffering from power outages in their homes in the Moscow region caused by technical issues at plants amid subzero temperatures.

On January 4, a heating main burst at the Klimovsk Specialized Ammunition Plant in the town of Podolsk, which is about 30 miles south of central Moscow. Since then, tens of thousands of Russians are reported to have no heating in their homes.

Affected areas include the cities of Khimki, Balashikha, Lobnya, Lyubertsy, Podolsk, Chekhov and Naro-Fominsk, a map published by a Russian Telegram channel and shared on other social media sites shows.

Other Russian media outlets reported that in Moscow, residents of Balashikha, Elektrostal, Solnechnogorsk, Dmitrov, Domodedovo, Troitsk, Taldom, Orekhovo-Zuyevo, Krasnogorsk, Pushkino, Ramenskoye, Voskresensk, Losino-Petrovsky and Selyatino are also without power.

The Telegram channel said that at the 820th Main Center for Missile Attack Warnings, "the crew...is on duty around the clock."

"It is here that the decision on a retaliatory nuclear strike is executed," the channel said.

Newsweek could not independently verify the report and has reached out to the Russian Defense Ministry by email for comment.

Power outages have also been reported in Russia's second-largest city, St. Petersburg, in the country's western Voronezh region, in the southwest city of Volgograd, and in Rostov, which borders Ukraine, a country that Russia has been at war with since February 24, 2022.

On Sunday, two shopping malls in St. Petersburg were forced to close because of problems with light and heating, reported local news outlet 78.ru. Hundreds of other homes in the city have had no electricity, water or heating for days amid temperatures of -25 C (-13 F).

Russian authorities have also been forced to compensate passengers of a train that ran from Samara to St. Petersburg (a 20-hour journey) without heating during -30 C (-22 F) temperatures. Videos circulating on social media showed carriage windows frozen over. A passenger also said the toilet didn't work during the trip because of frozen pipes.
