Tool (formed in 1990) is a Grammy Award-winning American alternative metal and art rock band that also lends influences from progressive and psychedelic rock, hailing from Los Angeles, California, U.S.

With dreams of lives in the film industry, bassist Paul D’Amour and guitarist Adam Jones moved to Los Angeles during the 1980s, which is where they met singer Maynard James Keenan and drummer Danny Carey. Upon forming in 1990, the band spent two years performing live shows around Los Angeles, and recording demos to raise their profile. In 1992 Tool signed with Zoo Entertainment, who issued the band’s debut EP “Opiate” the same year. Led by the singles “Hush” and “Opiate”, the record was a hard-hitting, heavy release and was supported with a tour alongside Rollins Band, Fishbone and Rage Against the Machine.

With Nirvana augmenting the successful grunge period of the late eighties and early nineties, Tool toned down the metal themes on their debut full-length, “Undertow”. Released in 1993, the record rose to No. 50 on the Billboard 200, and was marked by its nihilistic and haunting aesthetic. Following the release the band played a successful series of shows on the 1993 Lollapalooza tour, where they moved from the second stage to the main, and were introduced by comedian Bill Hicks.

Tool’s second studio album, “Ænima” was released in March 2003 marked by the departure of bassic D’Amour and arrival of Justin Chancellor. Produced by prog-rock producer David Bottrill, the record was dedicated to the late Bill Hicks, who had shared many of the band’s ideals. Later earning triple platinum certification despite the falling popularity of alternative rock, the record was led by the Grammy-winning titled track and led Tool to become figureheads of alternative metal.

Once again supported by an extensive touring schedule, the band’s third full-length “Lateralus” followed in 2001, this time marked with art rock themes with greater atmospheric accompaniments both visual and auditory. Rising to No. 1 on the Billboard 200, an impressive feat for an alt-metal group, the record spawned the single “Schism”, which went on the win the Grammy for Best Metal Performance in 2001. Two years of solid touring followed, including dates alongside King Crimson, following which the group’s members took time away from Tool to focus on other interests.

Led by the single “Vicarious”, Tool’s fourth full-length album, “10,000 Days”, arrived in May 2006, once again topping the U.S. Billboard 200. Proving not quite as popular as its predecessor, the album’s packaging later won the Grammy for Best Recording Package, and was supported with constant touring alongside Isis and Mastadon.

Live reviews

What a show. I can not believe I never saw Tool in my high school years. I've wasted half of my life not having seen them. There are really three shows when you go to a Tool concert. We'll start from what I saw on the left to what I saw on the right:

1) The visuals. The screen behind the band was CONSTANTLY filled by amazing images and videos. The images and light coming from so many angles could be a show all its own. Beautiful.

2)Duh. The band. Drummer, Guitarist, Bassist, and Maynard's little raised stage area were all lit perfectly well. MJK was wearing riot gear, interestingly enough. The drummer astounded me. They often do, but this guy was surrounded by percussion and made me feel like I was the one in the drummer box. Guitarist and Bassist played with the crowd constantly. Professionals and obviously so thankful for the admiration. What talent in each performer.

3) The crowd. Initially, my wife and I were in the pit and caught the opening act (3Teeth...think Tool, NIN, and Marilyn Manson cloned into a band. We had so much fun with them). After they finished and we got our first round of beers, we made our way to the balcony nearly all the way to the edge stage right. We had full view of the band and it was only then that I realized how packed in people were down below. We got to watch the moshers and laugh at the crowd surfers who were yanked out of the crowd by security as if they were tissues being taken from a kleenex box. I'm so glad we weren't up front. Anytime someone tried recording with their phones (Seriously, idiots. Please stop this), the staff would wave mag-lights into their lenses. Great idea BUT it also menas you're blinding everyone between you and the recorder. I can imagine that'd be a bit jarring.

Great show from beginning to end.

Sometimes it is nearly impossible to remove yourself from your surroundings when attending a concert in a giant corporate arena. While others times, suspension of disbelief is achieved effortlessly. When it comes to a Tool show, the venue itself literally ceases to exist. That was the case at the Pepsi Center last night. Hypnotized by Can Buyukberber’s alien/reptilian visuals and Maynard James Keenan’s deviant psychology, the sold-out crowd took flight on a journey into the furthest reaches of the human mind.

Transitory life was put on hold as we were forced to look inward instead of forward. The words and ideas of controverisial visionaries such as Bill Hicks, Carl Jung, and Karl Marx joined with the industrial heartbeat provided by Danny Carey, Justin Chancellor, and Adam Jones; all while MJK preached the gospel of poisoned religion, astrological phenomenon, unified consciousness, and Armageddon.

Tool shows have shown very little variety since the last album, but that doesn’t mean each one isn’t a unique experience. Like a mushroom or LSD trip, the vehicle and destination are same, but the journey is something completely different each time.

Been a bucket list band for some time now.... Finally got close enough to make it.

Entertainment value 5

Fan base 10

Maynard remained in the dark the entire performance and once just left the stage for whatever reason letting his fellow band mates play continuous rifts until his return. He made a brief walk across stage after the show was over and the lights turned on.

The extremely long instrumental rifts were TOOL fashion but they could have easily squeezed in 5 more songs if they just dialed that back a bit.

Show lasted just over 2 hours..... Expected a longer show. Everyone did.

No pics or video were allowed except the very last song when Maynard let everyone know they could. This was strictly enforced as a guy was removed for doing so.

They released new album date during the show.

They did not play "Sober".... The one song I was hoping to hear live...

The drummer played some killer solos...

Maynard was sporting a "red and black striped" mohawk.

Overall a pleasant trip.... The fan base truly didn't disappoint by cheering loudly.... And letting TOOL know they were still loved and supported....

I still want to hear "Sober" live..... Ugh

One of the best shows I have ever seen, and I have been to many. This was my 3rd time seeing Tool, and this was their best performance. Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor were having an out of body experience. These guys were playing out of their minds! I have never seen anyone rock a gong the way Danny did. They were both spot on. Tool may have the best rhythm section in the world right now. The light show was amazing as well. The screens and laser effects was out of this world. I personally like the no camera policy these guys have too. It was great to not have to watch a show through someone's phone screen for a change. They did let everyone take out their device for pictures and video on the last song. Nice compromise. As always, the Tulsa crowd was great too. I believe they are the reason Tool keeps coming back here. They get a lot of love from us down here. Now I have to find a way to get to another city and see this one again!

I've been a Tool fan since I first saw the video for Sober back on Headbangers Ball with Riki Rachtman (that shows hold old I am), but I've only seen them three times. Let me just say that they don't tour often, and when they do, it's not always close to home, but it is ALWAYS worth the drive/flight! Tool never disappoints and ALWAYS brings their "A game". Danny was sick as hell and STILL brought down the house with his skills! Adam and Justin delivered unrivaled precision on all my faves, well almost all, and I say that just cause I'm greedy and want to hear MORE! Then of course Mr. Maynard James... the dude stands in the background the entire time and lets the rest of the band take the spotlight. The dude is weird as hell... but I wouldn't have it any other way. I love these guys and hope to go to dozens more Tool shows before I kick the bucket. #legendary

I expect the sound at the dome to be poor, but, this was utter crap. The floor usually has acceptable sound, and for $150 I expect that I will get my bang for the buck. I got hardly any vocals, and a muddy distorted mess. I also expect to get nothing from Maynard, and we got a little more than that. The band has so little stage presence, that, I ended up watching the impressive visuals probably 80%of the show. And for half of it I even forgot the band was playing. Danny Carey the drummer did his best to take center stage and he did an admirable job, and Justin Chancellor the bassist also attempted to draw some attention. Stoned out of your gourd you will truly appreciate the visuals, but, stay home throw on any or all tool cds, search for visuals and enjoy. Or just watch your screen saver, and you will feel like you are there but better.

Absolutely incredible show! The sound was perfect, the visuals were spectacular and the band sounded super-tight (no surprise there). That is no easy feat considering the complexity of their music (especially their new material). They're one of the very few bands that actually sound the same or better live than the studio album. Maynard is finally more visible on this tour as they've added two platforms on each side of the drum riser where he crouched, danced, slithered and delivered his exceptional vocals. He even engaged the crowd a little bit, which was shocking. You could tell he and all his band mates are in a good head space and were really enjoying themselves. Truly memorable show from one of the greatest rock bands ever!

Tool concerts tend to stick with you for quite a while. The visuals alone are captivating, inspiring, working with the music, creating a synchronicity few bands have achieved.

Adam Jones is the artistic force that really drives the group, Maynard James Keenan providing lyrical emotion and commentary. Danny Carey and Justin Chancellor take the songs and drive them to a new level with brilliant drum and bass overtures.

The sum of the parts continually push the limits of progressive music and the best way to experience this is in person. I'll always support this band, their creative vision is something to witness, hopefully they will tour and create music for us to consume. If you haven't seen them, do it before they stop!

The band was unreal as always.

I attended a Montreal show a couple of years back and this was just as good along with the addition of some new album tracks.

Unfortunately, I can't say the same for the crowd here. The fans were far more connected to the music in Montreal. They understood the ebb and flow.

But, for some reason, we've got fools in Toronto who show up, get trashed and are somehow louder than the band. People here don't seem to get the idea that they're there with 12 - 13 thousand other people so it's really not about them. But, hey, that's the maturity level of kids old enough to drink legally, but not self-aware...

If ever they're back again, I'll see them, but never at Scotia again.

I have been waiting for over 20 yrs for Tool to come back to Dallas and Jam out. Well that's exactly what TOOL did on 22January2020 in Dallas, TX at American Airlines Arena. From start to end nothing but excellence from all 4 Gentleman. lanyards voice was Top form and the musician's jammed do hard I know they have to have blisters on their fingers. They are a very fine tuned head banging, fist in the air rocking Rock and Roll band of the Decade. If you happen to get a chance to see TOOL within the next 4 shows, only in the states, get there. Because you dont want to miss this show. SHOW OF THE YEAR!!!!! Guaranteed!!!

Maynard James Keenan also talked about the TOOL concerts for 2024:

“No point in choosing something similar to us. The approach or criteria I usually take when it’s my turn to choose an opener is Diversity. No point in choosing something similar to us.

Most are only here for the headliner, anyway. But for those with open hearts and minds, I choose something I feel is compelling in its own way. @blonderedheadofficial is my pick for this upcoming run. Incredible melodies, complex & subtle rhythms, and nontraditional arrangements. But Nothing like @Toolmusic. And Not meant to be. Obviously, if it’s not your thing, don’t worry. What you came to hear will soon follow. But if any of what you hear resonates, @blonderedheadofficial have a deep catalog for you to get lost in for years to come.”

TOOL USHER IN 2024 WITH U.S. TOUR, PERFORMING LOCALLY ON JANUARY 10 AT CFG BANK ARENA.

Since the 2019 release of the TOOL’s critically-acclaimed album, Fear Inoculum , the band has won a GRAMMY Award® (Best Metal Performance for “7empest”), completed multiple, sold-out tours of both the U.S. and Europe, and headlined Bonnaroo, Power Trip, Aftershock, Welcome to Rockville, Louder Than Life, and the Sonic Temple Arts & Music Festival.

Reviews of TOOL’s recent live outings praised the four-piece, with Loudwire dubbing the performances as “a masterclass of immersion, sound and stage design, musicianship… and levels of ungodly tightness.” The Austin Chronicle described the incomparable live experience as an “unbridled exchange of catharsis between performers and fans” and Revolver said “TOOL delivered a stunning… set featuring classic fan favorites, newer Fear Inoculum standouts and choice deeper cuts … the striking visuals also included a psychedelic laser and projections show bar none.”

Ultimate guide to Tool's concerts at Footprint Center in Phoenix: Tickets, dates and more

tool concert tour 2024

The members of Tool have reportedly been working on the follow-up to "Fear Inoculum," a chart-topping triumph that hit the streets in August 2019 as their first release in 13 years.

Last October, bassist Justin Chancellor appeared on The Vinyl Guide podcast, where he said, "We've got many ideas cooking. We haven't recorded anything yet. But we're quite busy until — I guess until after the spring of next year touring.

"So once that's done, we're gonna get back in the studio and knuckle down and put some of it together. We've already had a few pretty decent sessions of writing. So we've got the ingredients in place. We've just gotta really bang it out and spend that time when we're not touring."

Since the release of "Fear Inoculum,"  Maynard James Keenan and his bandmates  have won a Grammy (Best Metal Performance for “7empest”) and completed multiple sold-out tours of the U.S. and Europe while headlining Bonnaroo, Aftershock, Power Trip, Welcome to Rockville, Louder Than Life and the Sonic Temple Arts & Music Festival.

Now, they're on their way to downtown Phoenix for two nights at Footprint Center .

They've done three metro concerts since releasing "Fear Inoculum," the first of which was hailed by azcentral.com as "a visually breathtaking night of dystopian art-rock spectacle."

Here's everything you need to know before you go, including where to park, the clear bag policy and what to expect from the concert.

Tool Are Set to Kick Off 2024 Tour: Here’s What to Expect

Spoiler: It was loud

Tool Are Set to Kick Off 2024 Tour: Here’s What to Expect

( Editor’s note: Tool’s 2024 tour kicks off January 10th in Baltimore, MD. In celebration, we’re rolling out this review of one of the band’s final concerts of 2023. Tool tickets are available here .)

Even before the first song began, the Tool concert in Toronto on November 21st, 2023 was the loudest I had been to.

When a lone kick drum signaled the beginning of the set, the crowd erupted as the band slowly trickled out of the stands, with drummer Danny Carey leading the charge, followed by guitarist Adam Jones and bassist Justin Chancellor. As they began playing “Fear Inoculum,” the title track of their 2019 album, vocalist Maynard James Keenan claimed his platform atop the stage shrouded in darkness, seen only in silhouette with his spikes sticking up through the gloom.

Keenan encouraged the crowd to put away their “tracking devices,” and the band ran through the only Undertow track in the setlist, “Intolerance,” before blowing out the stadium with the fan favorite “Rosetta Stoned” off of 10,000 Days .  The rolling guitars echoed through the space,  and every kickdrum could be felt in your chest long after it had finished resounding.

While the three instrumentalists had lights on them at all times, with Carey being particularly bright in the center of the stage, Keenan kept himself in the back, at times disappearing entirely in the gloom. Occasionally his mohawk cut through the psychedelic visuals in the background, but he was content to give the limelight to his band mates. The ethereal vocals often emanated from a void at the back of the stage.

Adrian Belew (L) and Steve Vai are teaming up for the King Crimson 'BEAT' Tour.

In the late ’60s, King Crimson was one of the most influential prog-rock groups in the world.

After disbanding in 1974, guitarist Robert Fripp reformed the band in 1981 with new members Adrian Belew , Bill Bruford, and Tony Levin. The quartet took their sound in a wholly new direction with their three African, post-punk, and minimalist albums “Discipline,” “Beat” and “Three of a Perfect Pair.”

Now, more than 40 years later, King Crimson sans Fripp and Bruford will take that trio of records on the road for their 2024 ‘BEAT Tour’ with guitar virtuoso Steve Vai and Tool drummer Danny Carey.

Along the way, the legendary outfit will stop into New York City’s Beacon Theatre on Oct. 5, Red Bank, NJ’s Hackensack Meridian Theatre on Oct. 9, Rochester’s Kodak Center on Oct. 19 and Albany’s The Egg on Oct. 21.

While Fripp isn’t part of the tour, he did give the upcoming jaunt its blessing.

“This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last autumn, a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently at McCabes in Santa Monica. Even, I suggested the name,” the 77-year-old shared on Facebook .

For fans who want to see the daring rockers live, tickets are available for all concerts as soon as today.

Although inventory isn’t available on Ticketmaster until Friday, April 5, fans who want to ensure they have tickets ahead of time can purchase on sites like Vivid Seats before tickets are officially on sale.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

On top of the King Crimson tour, Vai is touring with pals Joe Satriani and Eric Johnson on their ‘G3 Tour’ up until May.

Soon after, the  ‘Satch/Vai Tour’  will take off sending the pair — who have played together since Satriani was Vai’s teacher when they were teens — on the road for another three months.

The project, dubbed BEAT , will perform selections from the three albums King Crimson released in the 1980s: Discipline ,  Beat , and  Three of a Perfect Pair . Vai also indicated that other choice selections from the band’s discography could show up in setlists.

The extensive 42-date North American tour will kick off on September 12th in San Jose. BEAT will play theaters across the country in L.A., Dallas, New York City, Toronto, Cleveland, Nashville, Chicago, Denver, and many more before wrapping on November 8th in Las Vegas. The trek will follow summer tours for Tool and Belew’s Remain In Light celebration with Talking Head  Jerry Harrison .

“The 1981 through 1984 King Crimson created a music all its own,” Belew said in a press release. “Timeless. Beautiful. Complex. Fierce. For the fans who lived through it then, and the ones who never got to witness it, our aim is to bring it to life again. A monumental task but we’re going for it! There are not enough exclamation points to express my excitement!”

Tool’s legacy has long been associated with the pioneering work of King Crimson. Aside from the progressive influences, King Crimson also played a stretch of shows opening for Tool back in 2001, which resulted in an onstage collaboration between Crimson mastermind Robert Fripp and Tool on “ Sober “.

“I am very excited to share the stage with three of my favorite musicians on the planet,” Carey said. “Tony, Steve, and Adrian have always been a source of inspiration for me since the beginning of my career, and now to be able to share a bit of my musical journey with them is a dream come true.”

BEAT has earned the endorsement of famously prickly Robert Fripp, who even takes credit for coming up with the band’s name.

“This is the project that Adrian Belew called me about last Autumn,” Fripp wrote on Facebook , “a project which I support and fully encourage, and discussed with Steve Vai recently at McCabes in Santa Monica. Even, I suggested the name.”

An artist pre-sale is currently underway for tickets to the BEAT tour celebrating King Crimson, accessible using the code “BEATTOUR”. Tickets will go on sale to the general public on Friday, April 5th at 10 a.m. local time via Ticketmaster .

The band recently sat for a lengthy interview with YouTuber and music producer/educator Rick Beato , available below. Belew also laid out a timeline of how the group came together (over five years) on his Facebook page .

Former King Crimson Members Form Beat, Announce 2024 Tour

P rog-rock band King Crimson may have disbanded decades ago, but that hasn’t stopped a few former members from forming their own supergroup. Adrian Belew (former King Crimson guitarist and vocalist) and Tony Levin (former King Crimson bassist) have formed a new group called Beat with Tool drummer Danny Carey and famed guitarist Steve Vai. The band’s namesake comes from King Crimson’s 1982 album Beat . And yes, if you’re wondering, KC frontman Robert Fripp has given his full endorsement for the project.

Less than a month after forming, the band has just announced a North American tour that’s set to kick off in September. The supergroup will perform across the US and Canada well into November. No supporting acts have been announced.

The Beat 2024 Tour will start on September 12 in San Jose, California at San Jose Civic. The tour will end on November 8 in Las Vegas, Nevada at The Theater at Virgin Hotels.

The main ticketing platform for the Beat 2024 Tour is going to be Ticketmaster , and there are a ton of different presale events going on right now. If you want in on the artist presale specifically, use the code “BEATTOUR”.

General on-sale kicks off on April 5 at 10:00 am local. If the presale event sells out your tour date of choice, give Stubhub a try. It’s a great platform for finding after-sale tickets, and your purchase will be guaranteed by the FanProtect Program. No scams here!

March 24 Moscow concert hall attack

By Heather Chen , Andrew Raine , Catherine Nicholls, Antoinette Radford, Maureen Chowdhury and Kathleen Magramo , CNN

Our live coverage of the Moscow concert hall attack has moved here.

Suspects in deadly concert hall attack facing life imprisonment. Here's what we know

From CNN staff

People line up at a makeshift memorial outside Crocus City Hall near Moscow on March 24.

All four suspects in the Crocus City concert hall attack case have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 22.

They are charged with committing a terrorist act, according to the courts of general jurisdiction of the city of Moscow, which under the Russian Criminal Code is punishable by up to life imprisonment.

Three of the defendants pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS.

All four are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, and had been in Russia on either temporary or expired visas.

Friday's attack left at least 137 people dead. The attack is Russia's deadliest in two decades .

Catch up on the latest developments:

  • Day of mourning: Russian President Vladimir Putin declared Sunday a day of national mourning for the 137 victims in Friday's attack .
  • Authorities work to identify victims: Procedures to identify those killed in the attack have begun, the city’s Department of Health said, according to Russian state news agency RIA Novosti. The Russian Investigative Committee said 62 bodies had been identified so far, adding that "for the remaining victims, genetic examinations are being carried out to establish their identities."
  • Fighting terrorism in Syria and Turkey: Putin held separate calls with his Turkish and Syrian counterparts, Recep Tayyip Erdogan and Bashar al-Assad, on Saturday and promised closer cooperation in fighting terrorism following the attack, according to a Kremlin readout.
  • Russian Embassy says no warnings from US: The Russian Embassy in Washington says it did not receive any warnings about a potential attack in Moscow from the US. Last week, Putin dismissed warnings by the US embassy in Russia that there could be attacks on large groups.
  • Putin links attack to Ukraine: Putin said the main suspects arrested planned to flee into Ukraine. Ukraine has denied any connection. The UK warned that Russia was creating a "smokescreen of propaganda."
  • Terror alert: France has lifted its terror alert to its highest level following the deadly attack in Moscow, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said Sunday.

Here's what we know about the four suspects in the Moscow concert hall attack

From CNN’s Masha Angelova and Josh Pennington

Suspects in the shooting attack at the Crocus City Hall concert venue, from left: Saidakrami Murodali Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, and Muhammadsobir Fayzov.

Each of the four defendants charged with committing a terrorist act in the Crocus City concert hall attack was brought to court individually in Moscow on Sunday.

They are accused of committing a crime under part 3, provision “b” of article 205 of the Russian Criminal Code (terrorist act), which the Russian Criminal Code states is punishable with up to life imprisonment.

Three pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS .

Here's what we know about the accused:

  • Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev: The 32-year-old was the first defendant brought to court. Mirzoyev, from Tajikistan, had a temporary registration for three months in the southern Russian city of Novosibirsk in Siberia, but it expired, according to RIA Novosti.
  • Saidakrami Rachabalizoda: He appeared as the second defendant, and told the the court that he had Russian registration documents but couldn't remember where they were. He communicated through an interpreter, according to state media RIA Novosti. Rachabalizoda was reportedly born in 1994.
  • Shamsidin Fariduni: He was born in 1998 in Tajikistan and is a citizen of the Central Asian country. Fariduni was officially employed at a factory in the Russian city of Podolsk and was registered in the city of Krasnogorsk, according to state media RIA Novosti.
  • Muhammadsober Faizov: The fourth defendant appeared nonresponsive in a wheelchair and was accompanied by a doctor to his court appearance, as seen in Moscow City Court’s video shared on Telegram. Faizov was temporarily unemployed, before which he worked in a barber shop in Ivanovo, a city northeast of Moscow, and is registered in that city, according to state media RIA Novosti. He was reportedly born in 2004.

This post has been updated with more information on the charges against the suspects.

Moscow court orders preventive detention for all four defendants in concert hall attack case

A suspect is escorted before a court hearing at the Basmanny district court in Moscow, Russia March 24.

The Basmanny District Court of Moscow on Sunday granted the investigators’ motion for detention, as the chosen preventative measure, for all four defendants in the Crocus City Hall attack case.

All four men have been remanded into pre-trial detention until May 22, stated Moscow City Court via Telegram.

They are all charged with committing a terrorist act, according to the courts of general jurisdiction of the city of Moscow, which under the Russian Criminal Code is punishable up to life imprisonment.

Each of the four defendants was brought to court individually on Sunday.

Three pled guilty to all charges, according to state media news agency TASS.

The names of the four accused in the case are Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, Saidakrami Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni and Mukhammadsobir Faizov, Moscow City Courts announced via Telegram.

All four are from Tajikistan, a former Soviet republic, and have been in Russia on either temporary or expired visas.

The court held closed hearings for each of the accused with no members of the public allowed, TASS reported, citing the court’s press service.

2 defendants identified in Crocus City Hall attack

From CNN’s Masha Angelova, Michael Bodenhorst and Josh Pennington

The first defendant in the Crocus City concert hall attack case, Dalerdzhon Mirzoyev, has pleaded guilty on all counts, the press service of Moscow City Court told state media RIA Novosti.

He will be held in preventive custody at least through May 22.

Mirzoyev is one of two defendants implicated in the attack who are facing possible life imprisonment, as reported by state media.

The suspects — Mirzoyev and Saidakrami Rachabalizoda — appeared in a Moscow court on Sunday on charges related to the attack.

Both individuals are accused of committing a terrorist act and could be sentenced to life imprisonment, according to state media outlet RIA Novosti. The prosecution has requested detention as a precautionary measure for both defendants.

Authorities have petitioned the court to conduct Mirzoyev's hearing behind closed doors to safeguard the integrity of the proceedings, state media news agency TASS reported.

Crocus City Hall killings are deadliest since Beslan school siege — these are some other recent attacks in Russia

From CNN Staff

Emergency services are seen on the scene of the deadly 2017 metro blast in St. Petersburg.

The attack on Moscow's popular Crocus City Hall that left at least 133 dead has become the deadliest attack in Russia since the Beslan school siege in 2004.

Some other recent attacks include:

  • September 26, 2022 : Eleven children and four adults were killed when a gunman wearing Nazi symbols opened fire at a school in the western Russian city of Izhevsk. The shooter, who was reportedly wearing a black T-shirt with Nazi insignia and a helmet, died by suicide following the attack.
  • April 3, 2017 : At least 11 people were killed in a blast on the St. Petersburg metro. The explosion tore through a train as it was traveling between two stations in Russia’s second-largest city.
  • October 31, 2015 : A Russian passenger jet, Metrojet Flight 9268 crashed  on October 31 after departing from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh,  killing all 224 people  on board. US intelligence analysis suggested that ISIS or its affiliates  planted a bomb on the plane .
  • December 30, 2013 : A massive explosion at a train station in the Russian city of Volgograd killed at least 16 people, including one police officer, the Investigative Committee of Russia said.
  • January 25, 2011 : A suicide bomber attacked Domodedovo Airport , Moscow's busiest airport, killing 35 people and wounding about 100, authorities and state television said.
  • March 29, 2010 : Two explosions rocked the subway stations in central  Moscow during rush hour, killing at least 38 people and wounding more than 60 others, spawning widespread public outrage. A website associated with Chechen separatists, who have long fought for independence from Russia, claimed responsibility for the attacks.

Rescuers, robotic systems and canine teams are currently on site of Crocus City concert hall

From CNN’s Darya Tarasova and Eve Brennan

More than 300 “specialists” and 154 pieces of equipment are currently on site at the Crocus City concert hall in Krasnogorsk, Moscow region, where a deadly attack took place Friday , Russia’s Ministry of Emergency Situations said on Telegram on Sunday.

The ministry said more than 400 cubic meters of structures had been dismantled by rescuers while specialized robotic systems, canine teams and psychologists from the ministry continue to work.

More than 1,600 calls have already been received on the department’s hotline, the ministry added.

The post was accompanied by a video showing dozens of emergency workers digging through the rubble of the partially burned-down concert hall.

Remember : At least 137 people died on Friday after attackers opened fire on civilians at the Crocus City concert hall, and set the building ablaze. The Islamic State group, also known as ISIS, has claimed the attack and  released graphic footage  purporting to show the incident.

Putin lit a candle in memory of victims of the concert hall attack

From CNN's Eve Brennan and Anna Chernova

In this photo from the Kremlin, Russian President Vladimir Putin lights a candle in memory of victims of the Crocus City Hall attack, at the Novo-Ogaryovo residence in the Moscow region, on March 24.

Russian President Vladimir Putin lit a candle Sunday in memory of victims of the deadly attack at the Crocus City concert hall in Moscow region on Friday.

Putin also expressed deep condolences following the Moscow shooting, calling it a "barbaric terrorist act" in a video statement released Saturday.

More background: The deadly attack comes barely a week after Putin secured his fifth presidential term. The large-scale attack is damaging for a leader who portrays himself as someone able to guarantee order.
