  • Great_Beer_Now 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Alabama Football Past and Present University of Alabama football is a sports institution, and it has been made that way through a long tradition of winning that continues to this day. The man responsible for the school’s stellar reputation for winning is Paul Bryant. His years with the team, and the years of others who have coached the Crimson Tide for more than 130 years are on display at the Paul Bryant Museum. I visited the Paul Bryant Museum while attending parent orientation for incoming freshman. I was fully aware of Bryant and his tremendous success on the field, but I knew only a little bit about the specifics of his time at Alabama and the years before he became head coach at this school. A visit to the Paul Bryant Museum was exactly what I needed to educate myself on University of Alabama football and how it has shaped and influenced college football. This museum, while it is named after Paul Bryant and focuses on Paul Bryant, is really about the Alabama football team’s history as a whole. It steps you through the years of Bama football, starting way back in the 1800’s and continuing to the present day. The exhibits have much to read and learn and there are several noteworthy videos worth watching, to help you not just see but also hear about the people who played and coached at Alabama and helped make it the college football powerhouse that it is today. I learned much from visiting the Paul Bryant Museum, not just about Bryant, but also about other coaches and players. Although I am fully aware of Paul Bryant’s legacy, record number of college wins, etc, I’m not well- versed on Alabama football overall. I did not even know, for example, that NFL quarterback Ken Stabler played at Alabama under coach Bryant. I didn’t know about the event that earned Bryant his nickname, Bear. I learned all these things and more during my visit and I exited the doors with a significant increase in my Alabama football IQ. Alabama football has a fascinating past and the Paul Bryant Museum helps bring the memories back to life. Alabama football fans are certain to feel goosebumps as they tour this museum, but everyone who visits, even those with a marginal interest in the game, will come away feeling satisfied. It isn’t a very large museum and it can be visited in less than an hour. I wish it was bigger, and I would have liked to see even more exhibits, but this is still a good place to visit if you want to improve your knowledge of Alabama football and learn more about the people responsible for its rise to fame. • Greg2117 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Great tribute to a historic program This museum on campus is a great tribute to the history of the Alabama football program. It’s two blocks from the basketball coliseum so a short walk after a game. It has more items than I expected to include bear Bryant’s jacket, championship rings and several tributes to all the greats that have come through the program. Highly recommend taking a 30 minute stroll through here if you are a football fan. Read more Written January 7, 2023

Man charged with murder of nursing student killed on University of Georgia campus

ATHENS, Ga. ( WANF /Gray News) – A suspect is in custody for the homicide of a student on the University of Georgia’s campus, police said.

The victim has been identified as 22-year-old Laken Hope Riley, a nursing student at the Augusta University College of Nursing at its Athens campus, the city that is also home to the University of Georgia, where she was found dead.

University of Georgia Police announced Friday the suspect is Jose Antonio Ibarra, 26, who lives in Athens but is not a United States citizen. He is being charged with malice murder, felony murder, aggravated battery, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, kidnapping, hindering a 911 call and concealing the death of another.

UGA Police Chief Jeffrey Clark said Ibarra likely did not know Riley.

“I think this was a crime of opportunity,” Clark said.

Riley’s cause of death was blunt force trauma, according to law enforcement.

Clark said the arrest was possible with the assistance from several law enforcement agencies, including the Athens-Clarke County Police Department, Clarke County Sheriff’s Office and Georgia State Patrol, along with the Georgia Bureau of Investigation (GBI) and federal agencies. Video surveillance from campus also aided in the arrest, Clark said.

“The evidence is robust,” Clark said, adding the suspect’s apartment is still being searched. “Our work, however, is not done.”

Clark said there is no immediate threat of danger following the arrest.

Just before noon on Friday, authorities took three people into custody at the Argo apartment complex near the university, just south of several trails that lead to where Riley was killed.

It is unclear if Ibarra is one of the three seen being placed in handcuffs.

“Rest assured that the University of Georgia police in cooperation with Athens-Clarke County police and the Georgia Bureau of Investigation are continuing to work around the clock to resolve this crime and to bring anyone involved into justice,” Greg Trevor, a spokesman with the University of Georgia, said.

Laken Riley was found dead on the University of Georgia campus Thursday afternoon. She was a...

A University of Georgia spokesperson told CNN that Riley was previously a student at the university before her enrollment at Augusta University.

“The victim was an undergraduate student at the University of Georgia until the spring of 2023, and then she became a nursing student at the Augusta University nursing program in Athens,” spokesperson Cole Sosebee told CNN.

Riley was also a member of the Alpha Chi Omega sorority, according to other sorority members.

Riley’s cause and manner of death are pending but are expected to be determined on Friday, the coroner said.

University of Georgia police said they received a call just after 12 p.m. on Thursday from a friend who was concerned about Riley because she did not come back from a morning run at the intramural fields.

About 20 minutes later, police found Riley’s body in a forested area behind Lake Herrick with “visible injuries.”

Officers tried to give emergency aid, but Riley was pronounced dead at the scene.

The school said in a letter to students that “foul play is suspected,” adding that the “safety and welfare of our campus community is our top concern.”

All classes at the University of Georgia have been canceled until Monday. The Augusta University College of Nursing canceled classes on Friday.

University of Georgia Police Chief Jeffery Clark is asking people to stay away from the area while campus police, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation and the Athens-Clarke County Police Department investigate.

“This is a tragic day,” Clark said. “My investigators will be working this case day and night, and they will be looking at every camera that we have.”

He also is encouraging students to travel in pairs or groups as they walk around campus.

Clark also said this is the first slaying on the university’s campus in 20 years.

University of Georgia students said they are scared knowing what took place on campus.

“Me and my roommate, like pretty much everyone I know, we park over there. Me and my boyfriend go on runs over there all the time,” said University of Georgia student Izzy Whitesides. “The fact that the person hasn’t been caught yet is really scary. Hence why I had somebody come walk me back to my car.”

“It’s really beautiful and peaceful, and now I feel like it’s tainted. It’s like, scary, a little bit,” student Alena Wiggins said.

Police ask anyone with information to call the University of Georgia Police Department at (706) 542-2200.

USM Interior Design Students Tour Mohawk Group

Wed, 02/28/2024 - 11:35am | By: Ivonne Kawas

USM Interior Design

Juniors in the Interior Design program at The University of Southern Mississippi (USM) were treated recently with an opportunity to tour Mohawk Group , the commercial flooring division of Mohawk Industries - the largest floor covering manufacturer in the world.

During their visit to the headquarters located in Dalton, Ga., students got a firsthand look at the production process of high-quality and innovative flooring solutions and learned all about the company’s commitment to sustainability and innovation.

“Industry tours are an integral part of our curriculum, as they empower students with the perspectives needed to gain insights into future career opportunities,” said Alvis Lawson Jr., assistant teaching professor of Interior Design and program coordinator. “The immersive experience also allows students to connect classroom learning with real-world scenarios. Most importantly, it provides a platform for our students to network and build connections, fostering a sense of community and support within the industry.”

Anna Patrick from Covington, La., hailed the unique experience in which the group took tours and witnessed a production process unlike any other.

“We were generously sponsored by Mohawk Flooring Company, giving us the learning experience of a lifetime,” said Patrick. “We were taken to Mohawk's headquarters where they guided us through the entire production process of laminate, vinyl, hardwood, and carpet flooring.”

Patrick notes that the group took a tour through some of the top facilities, including Mohawk’s Yarn Extrusion Factory, Carpet Manufacturing, and Light Lab Design Center.

“The tours began at the Yarn Extrusion Factory, where we observed the process of extruding yarn from synthetic granulates,” said Patrick. “The tour continued at the Pilot Plant, where they showcased the sewing and weaving of intricate carpet samples. Afterwards, we went to the Carpet Manufacturing Factory, where they revealed the dyeing and printing process of large-scale carpets tailored for hotels and commercial buildings. The experience concluded with a tour of the Light Lab, unveiling this year’s top carpet designs and their inspirations.”

For Patrick, the highlight of the trip was gaining an insider's perspective on the dynamic carpet design world, as well as getting to network with some of the employees and interns.

“Our group appreciated gaining an insider's perspective on the carpet design world as we felt we were among the first groups to witness these extensive design projects,” said Patrick. “Post-tour, to cap off the trip, we met Mohawk employees for dinner, allowing us to interact and network with interns and employees. As we prepare for joining the workforce, it was enjoyable to witness individuals of similar age expressing their love for the company and their roles.”

Anna Grace Lindsay from Madison, Miss. encourages underclassmen to go witness firsthand how Mohawk is transforming the flooring industry.

“The Mohawk trip proved to be both thrilling and enlightening,” said Lindsay. “The most cherished experience for me was gaining insights into the process of fiber production, and the factory's machinery left a lasting impression. The technological innovations introduced by Mohawk to reduce its environmental footprint were truly impressive. I highly recommend this trip as a must-see for underclassmen, and I personally encourage interior designers to visit Georgia and witness how Mohawk is transforming the flooring industry.”
