We protect the Cromarty Firth

The Cromarty Firth is a very special environment consisting of Sites of Special Scientific interests, a Special Protected Area, a Special Area of Conservation and Ramsar sites for the protection of birds. The wildlife is abundant and the nature is spectacular.

Every year, over 30,000 birds spend winter with us in the Firth, feeding on the 21 species of algae and eelgrass. We are home to 300 harbour seals and have a group of 195 bottlenose dolphins, one of only two resident populations in the UK.

We welcome 10,000 Scottish salmon every year, travelling through the Cromarty Firth to their home river systems in the wider Highlands. Not long after, 200,000 of their smolts travel back down the Firth, through the Sutors and out to the North Sea.

We work tirelessly with local organisations to maintain clean water and a healthy environment – together with our shore excursion partners we care deeply for the Highlands, and we’re proud to welcome you to this diverse and spectacular area. Please tread gently and leave only footprints to ensure the environment remains special for generations to come.

Invergordon: tourist information

Invergordon is a town whose history stretches back through two World Wars and has now developed into a centre for oilrig refurbishment and maintenance. It is also a major port of call for cruise liners, being the only deep water port in the area, 40 liners, with 21,000 visitors from all over the world, berthed in 2004.

Ideally situated in the centre of the eastern Highlands, the town's High Street has recently been given a face lift with coloured granite blocks, speed controllers, a new restaurant and a mural has been painted on the Albyn Housing building.

There are many places to eat, providing quick take-away food right through to a quality country house hotel and restaurant just inland from the town, Indian and Chinese food is also available as an alternative to the more traditional fayre.

There is an Arts Centre, a Leisure and Sports Club, with swimming pool and an 18 hole golf course on the outskirts of town.

invergordon cruise ship schedule 2023

Great guide to Invergordon port. I work there with cruise ships as a guide and ground handler. 2023 looks set to be our busiest year yet. It looks like there will be some changes to the piers used next year with perhaps more use of Saltburn pier. Unfortunately for most of this year the pipe band has been unable to come into the port due to each piper needing to attend a health and safety briefing – let’s hope they get back in for 2023 as it is a great send off. Also cruising out of the Cromarty Firth between the sandstone peaks – the Sutors – back into the North Sea is a good spot to see some Bottlenose dolphins.

Hi, Melanie! Wow, thanks for this super useful info and the updates! I wish you a great 2023 season! 🙂

The excellent visitor's centre sets the scene before you visit the Castle. Don't forget to keep your eyes open for signs of Nessie !

2024 Cruise Ships Coming into Port of Invergordon

Table of Contents

Where Do Cruise Ships Dock in Invergordon?

Most cruise ships dock at an area called the ‘service base’. This is a large industrial area. Cruise ships moor alongside a very large concrete pier area and are able to walk into Invergordon town centre very easily.

The majority of the cruise ships coming to visit the port of Invergordon in 2024 going to be moored at the service base.

You can check the 2024 Port of Cromarty Firth cruise ship schedule here .

10 ships are due to be moored at Saltburn Pier.

Port of Invergordon – The Service Base

The service base is an industrial area. It is full of businesses that are connected with oil, gas, renewable energy, or support industries.

These companies carry out a variety of work such as servicing and repairing oil rigs for example.

There is no cruise ship terminal building for cruise ship passengers.

There is a tourist information point, some toilets, and a small shop within the port complex.

Coaches and transport for ship-organised excursions are allowed into the port complex.

All other vehicles – such as private tour vehicles and buses can be found outside the port complex in the town.

Port of Invergordon – Where Do Cruise Passengers Go?

Depending on what you are leaving the ship for you need to go in one of two directions;

port of invergordon post picture

Taking A Ship Organised Shore Excursion

Turn left as you exit the ship and you will come to the area where the coaches are parked. Coaches cannot park in this area for long periods due to the number of coaches coming and going. Your excursion team will advise you when to go to the coach park. This will ensure you won’t get there before the coach.

Security and other staff will direct you to your coach. Take extra care of the moving vehicles in the area.

There is no seating in this area and no shelter. There is no point arriving before the loading time advised by the ship as the coach is unlikely to be there.

Taking a Tour That is Not Organised by the Ship

Turn right as you exit the ship and follow the green-marked pathway. This will take you out of the port complex. Your tour company or guide will give you instructions on where to meet them. This varies depending on whether the tour is on a coach or in a car.

(Want to know how to get to Inverness from Invergordon – find all the details for taxis, trains and buses in my Invergordon to Inverness post!)

Walking to Invergordon

Turn right as you exit the ship and follow the green marked pathway. This will take you out of the port complex. Cross over the street using the pedestrian crossing.

Walk straight ahead and when you reach a large mural of a pipe band you are at Invergordon High Street.

Port of Invergordon – Saltburn Pier

Saltburn Pier is operated by the Port of Cromarty Firth. It is located just outside the town of Invergordon. It is a long wooden pier, approximately 1 mile long.

Cruise ship passengers wishing to visit Invergordon have to take a shuttle bus which takes them down the pier and drops them beside the town. It is not possible to walk along the pier.

Cruise ship passengers taking ship organised excursions are collected by coaches parking alongside the ship.

For 2024 the following ships are due to be at Saltburn Pier;
