29 Murals in Nashville: A Practical Guide to Mind-Blowing Art

Nashville’s street art scene is on fire! The city is known for its music, but the Nashville murals are taking over as a major cultural phenomenon. This mural guide is designed to help you find the most Instagrammable, colorful and mind boggling murals.

I Believe in Nashville Murals

Nashville’s Mural Culture is Exploding

Spotting street art is one of the coolest things to do in Nashville , and they are going about it in a whole new way. Many groundbreaking street art cities, like Bristol, England  have a culture whose gritty graffiti beginnings were driven by an angry youth counter-culture. Not so with Nashville. They skipped the whole disaffected, hip hop, graffiti phase and leaped straight to a fully formed big walls movement. Still other cities, like London’s Brick Lane , have a lot of furtive illegal works appearing (and disappearing) with great regularity. Less so in Nashville. While they do have guerrilla works and graffiti, more of the street art that you’ll find there has sprung from deliberate, commissioned projects organized by collectives.

All of this gives Nashville’s mural scene a clean, bright look that is very Instagrammable, making it popular with a broad cross section of the population. Hey, I’m a street art fanatic, so I’ll skulk down any dark alleyway if it’ll net me a Banksy. But a lot of people prefer their street art to be more accessible and Nashville has that in spades.

Take a Tour or Do it DIY?

There isn’t just one street or neighborhood for finding murals in Nashville. The locations are spread all over the city. For a visitor, especially one who doesn’t have a car, finding them can be tricky. So, I’m recommending two ways for you to see the murals; take a street art tour or do a DIY tour to just a few neighborhoods.

The formal tour is great because it covers a lot of ground and you’ll get backstory on the artists and murals. However, the tour doesn’t cover the downtown area. Alternatively, the benefits of a DIY street art tour is that you will then have time to further explore the neighborhoods, do some shopping and have a bite. The DIY info below shows you four neighborhoods that you can easily get to and explore on your own.

Guido Van Helten murals in Nashville Old Man

This mural and the one below it were created by Guido Van Helten . This mural tells a complete story and it yanked a very emotional response from me. Van Helten paints achingly detailed portraits and the man in this one is a resident of the neighborhood. These murals are located in at 1407 51st Ave in the Nations neighborhood. If you don’t have a car, you can see it on the mural tour. You can also find more of Van Helten’s silo work on the amazing Silo Trail in Victoria Australia and some additional murals in Reykjavik .

Nashville Mural Tours

I took a tour with Nashville Mural Tours and it ticked all the boxes. It covered all of the best Instagram spots, some secret and hard to find locations, all delivered with a big dose of southern hospitality. The 2.5 hour tour costs $35 and it’s worth every penny. Mary is so serious about her tours, she has even festooned her van in street art. She makes a point of staying up on all of the latest murals in Nashville and she understands the value of the ‘gram. She even offers special private birthday tours for parties of twelve.

Her tours are always evolving, but they touch on art in The Gulch, 12South, Elliston Place garage and the above Van Helten industrial location. She runs tours twice a day and I recommend that you book ahead.

Four Neighborhoods with Clusters of Street Art

The following four areas offer great Nashville mural locations. They all have a high density of art and they are fairly easy to get to. You can easily build them into your Nashville itinerary by mixing in mural spotting with other tourism activities and/or making a point of going out to eat or drink in the neighborhood.

Nashville’s Downtown Core

The Nashville Murals tour doesn’t cover the downtown core, but there’s a lot of street art to be found there. They are all sprinkled in with the bars and museums and you can fairly easily cover them in a two hour self-guided walking tour. Simply proceed down 5th Avenue past the Ryman as far as Church street to spot the remaining murals mentioned below.

Niels Meulman calligraphy mural - Nashville

This was my favorite mural downtown. The sweeping calligraphy technique has such scale and the message was romantic and hopeful. People walk past this mural all day long without pulling back far enough to see the message.

“As long as the moon shall rise. As long as the rivers flow. As long as the sun will shine. As long as the grass will grow.”

Beau Stanton mural - downtown nashville. Woman pouring water, pink and turquoise color

You can find more of Rone in his native Australia in this guide to street art in Melbourne .

Gibson guitar mural in Nashville alley

The four preceding murals were all part of a project coordinated by the Nashville Walls Project and some of it was sponsored by Gibson guitars. The Walls project has a goal to bring world class artists to Nashville and they are succeeding so far by scoring Guido Van Helten , Louis Masai , Ian Ross and Sentrock .

Angels & Monsters mural in Nashville- yellow angel figure

This neighborhood just west of the tracks is small but hip and popular for breakfast at Biscuit Love and music at the Station Inn. It’s about a mile west of the downtown core and you can walk or pick up a free ride on the Music City Circuit bus.

Nashville wings mural Kelsey Montague

This is mural is one of the most Instagrammed shots in Nashville. Notice how Montague customized the wings to feature the local music culture. I’m not the Queen of Selfies (by a long shot), but it was very fun getting one at this location. If you do it DIY, be aware there that you may find a line to get your shot. Go at an odd time of day to avoid waiting.

Ian Ross mural in The Gulch

The 12South Neighborhood

Welcome to your next great spot for a street art selfie. Every mural in this neighborhood demands it! 12South offers up a heavy dose of the adorbs, with the Draper James store, 5 Daughters bakery and Frothy Monkey coffee shop. It’s three miles south of town and getting there will cost ~$8 on UberX.

Nashville Looks Good on You Mural

There is also a parking lot located behind the store that has an interesting mural resembling paint chips.

Peace out Nashville street art in 12South

Oh boy, did I “heart” their donuts. Can you say 100 layers of dough wrapped in a tall sugary package? Eating just one of them is a meal, so stop there for both the mural…and the calories.

Elliston Place Garage

The Elliston Place garage is yet another Nashville Walls project. The whole thing, including the stairwells, is covered. It was a home grown project and most of the participating artists are from Nashville. The garage located at Elliston Place @ Louise Ave. You can find it just east of Centennial Park, near Vanderbilt. Getting there from downtown is an ~$8 Uber ride.

East Nashville

Nashville mural in Cleveland Park slay dragons

If you find yourself in East Nashville (and you should, because the eatin’ is good in that neighborhood), check out the new mural above. It was commissioned by the musician Drew Holcomb . You can find it at 1224 Meridian street in the Cleveland Park neighborhood.

There is a cluster of murals along Gallatin between Ordway and the Kroger at Eastland, including a cute hot air balloon by Kelsey Montague at The Cleo. There is another cluster on the 600-800 block of Main Street.

The Ellison Garage interior has been recently painted all gray. All the murals are gone. The only ones remaining are on the outside of the garage. Very disappointing.

Little correction: Elliston Place is near *Centennial* Park. Also don’t miss the street art in the Wedgewood-Houston neighborhood - love the Third Eye Jackalope behind the brewery at the corner of Houston & Pillow.

Excited to find your article. The artist for the dragons mural is Kim Radford. She has other murals around East Nashville. Notably Ham Baby on Mitchell’s Delicatessen and most recently Lilly Hiatt’s album promo at Grimey’s. She did one with an eagle and flag motif on a bail bond building that was unfortunately was destroyed by the tornado last week.

Yes- the pic here is from the 12South neighborhood, but I heard that the one in East Nashville was hit. So sad!

Oh my, these are examples of great street art! I would have emotional reactions to those of Guido Van Helten. Those are truly larger than life. Love the calligraphy, too...quite unique!

You're right. I never think of Nashville and murals in the same thought. Clearly, that needs to change. As a Philadelphian, I'm very partial to street murals. Philly has a vibrant mural scene with over 3,600 around the city, mostly sponsored by the Philadelphia Mural Arts program. It was originally started as an anti-graffiti initiative and has been very successful. Neighbors are included in planning and painting the murals and they largely stay free of graffiti even in the roughest neighborhoods. Come visit and see them. Organized "trolley" tours are available and there is a self guided walking tour of murals in Center City Philadelphia.

12 South is a charming, upscale neighborhood just a short drive from Downtown Nashville. Here you’ll find delicious eats and drinks (including my FAVORITE taco place as featured in my blog post about the best tacos in Nashville !) as well plenty of interesting shops. You could easily spend half a day here exploring everything this street has to offer. Not only is 12 South a Nash neighborhood offering great food and shopping, it is one of the most dense areas for iconic Nashville Murals!

In less than a 20 minute walk, you will come across SIX unique murals, each with their own expression and artistry.

Be sure to visit these 12 South murals in this order for the easiest walk!

I Love Donuts Mural

Address: 1110 Caruthers Ave, Nashville, TN 3720 Artist: Unknown

Start your afternoon in 12 South at the corner of Caruthers and 12th Avenue – aka Five Daughter’s Bakery . This donut shop is unlike any other – their famous 100 layer donuts are absolutely to die for and you’ll stumble across your first mural of the day. Grab a sweet treat, a coffee, and some photos in front of this adorable mural to start your day off right!

Lagrone’s art can be found on the side of the trendy FWD Clothing Company as well as many other locations in Nashville. Snag a photo and then stop in to shop for some surf-inspired garments.

Nash Flower Wings Mural

Address: Bullets and Pearls, 2507 12th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37204 Artist: Unknown

Keep walking (yes, we’re still on the same street!) and you’ll come upon my favorite mural in all of Nashville. Yes, wings are a big thing in Music City! Take some time to pose in front of this adorable flower mural – the shots will be sure to make a splash on your socials.

This spot is conveniently located next to Bullets and Pearls , an adorable boutique shop with lots of cute (and affordable) jewelry, bags, and Nashville-inspired accessories.

Nashville TN Murals

I Believe in Nashville Mural

Address: 2702 12th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37204 Artist: Adrien Saporiti

About half-way down the busiest part of 12 South, you’ll come across one of the most famous murals in all of Nashville. Adrien Saporiti’s I Believe in Nashville Mural is a photo-op everyone should take the time to seek out. There may be a line when you go, but it’s worth it for the memories!

This was Jonnie’s favorite 🙂

I Believe in Nashville Mural

Garden Floral

Address: 2900 12th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37204 Artist: Unknown

As you continue your journey down the street, you’ll come across a beautiful floral mural, painting by a mystery artist. Located on the side of United Apparel Liquidators (a discount designer clothing store) this mural stop is a win-win!

Make Music Not War

Address: 2902 12th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37204 (on the side of the Epice restaurant building) Artist: Relax Max Apparel

Last stop on your self-guided tour of the 12 South Murals will land you at Epice Lebanese Restaurant. Besides some delicious food, this restaurant has Relax Max Apparel’s Make Music Not War Mural on it’s side, a true homage to everything Music City stands for.

The Gulch Self-Guided Mural Tour

Another large hub for Nashville murals is the Gulch – a large area of Nashville dotted with plenty of restaurants and stores. It’s also home to one of the most famous mural in Nashville, Kelsey Montague’s WhatLiftsYou mural. Here is my ultimate guide for a walkable self-guided tour of the Gulch Murals.

*This self-guided tour is doable but definitely a longer walk than the 12 South itinerary. You may wish to grab an Uber to get to some of the further points. That being said, Jonnie and I did this by foot and so I think you could too! 🙂

Green Leaves of the Gulch

Address: 200 12th Avenue South but mural faces mostly 11th Ave South (right across from Milk and Honey) Artist: Ian Ross

You’ll want to start your self-guided Gulch mural tour near the address 200 12th Avenue. This is also the home of Milk and Honey , one of the most popular places for brunch in Nashville. Jonnie and I went here and let me tell you, it is GOOD. Be sure to order their cinnamon roll – to DIE for. Milk and Honey doesn’t take reservations so put your name in and then cross the street and have a photo shoot at this vast mural!

Created by artist Ian Ross, the Green Leaves of the Gulch is an all encompassing mural that covers a parking lot on 12th and 11th Avenue South. This mural reminded me of Jack and Beanstalk! Jonnie and I had so much fun taking photos here while we waited for our brunch reservation.

Murals in Nashville TN

Nashville WhatLiftsYou Wings Mural

Address: 302 11th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203 Artist: Kelsey Montague

Luckily, the mural everyone (and I mean EVERYONE) is looking for is just steps further down the street from Milk and Honey. Kelsey Montague’s WhatLiftsYou Wings mural is breathtaking and extremely popular. There will be a line but it’s worth it for this iconic Instagrammable Nashville photo-op.

Nashville Whatliftsyou Wings Mural

Jason Woodside Mural

Address: 299 11th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203 Artist: Jason Woodside

Right across the street, you’ll find this colorful and imaginative mural by Jason Woodside. Known for his optical illusions, Woodsides’ mural is a feast for the eyes as you walk The Gulch. You can find his artwork in numerous cities across the country (and the world!). Be sure to stop and marvel at this masterpiece that the Gulch is so lucky to have!

Acoustic Skyline

Address: 911 Division Street, Nashville, TN 37203 Artist: Allison Johnson

Next on your itinerary, you’ll want to continue walking down 12th Avenue South until you hit Division Street and then turn left. You’ll pass STK on your right – an amazing steakhouse if you’re looking for an upscale meal – and then you’ll find Allison Johnson’s Acoustic Skyline Mural. A true depiction of Music City, this mural is a great spot for music lovers to take a pic!

Carter Vintage Guitars

Address: 625 8th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203 Artist: Unknown

Now, you’ll need to put on your walking shoes (or take an Uber!) and get yourself to Carter Vintage Guitars. Jonnie and I made this walk; it really wasn’t bad and totally worth it to see this awesome mural and check out some seriously cool vintage guitars inside.

Nashville Mural Tour Self Guided

Candy Hearts Mural

Address: 601 8th Avenue South, Nashville, TN 37203 Artist: Bryson Leach

Honkey Tonk Angels Mural

Neighborhood: Downtown Address: Lucky Bastard Saloon, 408 Broadway, Nashville, TN 37203 Artist: Unknown

Broadway, although teeming with bars, country singers, and disco cowgirls, is not a hub for for murals. However, I was able to find one at Lucky Bastard Saloon! Be sure to stop here for some incredible country music, a beer, and an awesome photo shoot.

Nashville Wings Mural

What Lifts You Air Balloon Mural

Neighborhood: East Nashville Address: 1034 West Eastland Ave. Nashville, TN 37206 Artist: Kelsey Montague

Kelsey Montague, the artist of the iconic WhatLiftsYou Wings Mural has another mural in East Nashville. If you find yourself in this eclectic neighborhood, be sure to stop by and hop in the basket for a super fun shot!

Address : 601 8th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203

Pose Ideas : Point to the heart that best represent your status or mood. I chose “Cheers Y’all”.

The Candy Hearts mural is in the Gulch outside of Finnley’s Boutique. This mural is great for bachelorette parties with candy hearts that say, “Bach Please” or “Engaged AF”. Since the mural is large, there is plenty of room for group shots.

4. Hillsboro Village Dragon

Address : 1801 21st Avenue South

Artist : Eastside Murals

Pose Ideas : Stand next to the head of the dragon and stick your tongue out like it is!

The Hillsboro Village Dragon mural is one of the most famous murals in Nashville. It’s also one of the oldest, having been originally painted in 1995 and refurbished in 2015.

Address : 903 Gleaves St, Nashville, TN 37203

Pose Ideas : Stand with your arms level to the chicken wings and either keep your arms to your side or tucked behind your back. You will feel silly, but it turns out cute.

The Spread Your Wings chicken wings mural is outside of the pegleg porker BBQ restaurant. This mural is much goofier than other murals, making it a fun mix with the more insta-famous options on this list.

6. Looking Pretty Music City

art tour nashville

Address : 2709 12th Avenue South

Pose Ideas : Try to strike a pose that mimicks the legs on the mural! Even better if you have three people to copy all three movements.

“Music City” is another name for Nashville, given it’s long and prolific history with music. This mural pays respect and calls attention to the musical side of Nashville.

7. Hear this Nashville

art tour nashville

Address : 901 Gleaves St, Nashville, TN 37203

Artist : @newman.adam.art

Pose Ideas : Stand with one person singing into the microphone and the other near the ear, cupping this ear like they are listening.

8. Its Gonna be Ok

Wide mural with white background and colorful flowers that reads

Address : 3020 Charlotte Avenue

Artist : Sarah Tate

Pose Ideas : Since this mural is along a busy road, have your photographer cross the street for the best angle. Stand in front of the mural with your hands on your hips and a huge smile.

This mural has such a sweet message of “It’s gonna BE O.K.”. The entire thing is very feminine and soft, with flowers and the simple white background. Be careful taking photos here since it’s right next to the road.

9. I Believe in Nashville

Address : 2702 12th Ave South, Nashville, TN 37204

Artist : Adrien Saporiti

Pose Ideas : If alone, put your hands in the air or jump. In a group, cluster in the middle of the mural with your arms around each other.

On my trip to Nashville, I chose to skip the “I Believe” mural since I didn’t make it to the 12 th South neighborhood. However, it is one of the most popular Nashville murals, and worth the visit if you are in the area.

10. Highwaymen

art tour nashville

Address : 711 6th Ave S, Nashville, TN 37203

This large mural features the Highwaymen, as a tribute to some of country’s best artists. It’s a bit off the beaten path, but a true work of art.

11. Dolly Parton

Address : 1006 Forrest Avenue

Artist : Kim Radford

Pose Ideas : Pose with your hands on your cheeks just like Dolly is.

Dolly Parton is the unofficial queen of country music and therefore basically Nashville royalty. This Dolly Parton mural is a very colorful and well executed giant picture of her face.

12. We Are Seeds

art tour nashville

Address : 1414 Clinton St, Nashville, TN 37203

Artist : @simonandmoose @sarahpainter

Pose Ideas : This is best photographed without any people in the frame

This mural is one of my favorites in Nashville with the phrase, “They Buried Us They Didn’t Know We Were Seeds.” It’s a beautiful work of art with an inspiring message.

13. What Lifts You Balloon

Address : 1034 West Eastland Avenue

Pose Ideas : Get in the basket and act like you are soaring in the sky!

This hot air balloon mural is part of the same collection as the famous Nashville wings mural by Kelsey Montague. I love how this mural combines a 3D basket with the 2D painting on the wall.

14. Draper James

Draper james mural in nasvhille with blue and white strips and three girls posing

Address : 2608 12th Ave. S, Nashville, TN

Pose Ideas : Post like the photo above with your back to the camera and arms raised in the air. Alternatively, walk past the wall horizontally and look over your shoulder at the camera.

Draper James is a super cute boutique owned by Reese Witherspoon in Nashville. This Draper James blue and white stripe mural is very simple but also very cute. Since it’s simple, it’s a great backdrop for a fun outfit or funky pose.

15. Home is Where the Heart Is

Address : 1909 12th Avenue South

Pose Ideas : Jump in the air with your hands up, standing right in the middle of Tennessee

16. One Little Dream at Night

colorful mural with patches of different colors and text that reads one little dream at night and...

Address : 158 4th Avenue North

Pose Ideas : Since this mural spans multiple walls, it would be great for a tiktok or reel with you walking while the camera pans across the entire mural.

This mural wraps around the walls of printer’s alley in Nashville. The quote says “One Little Dream at Nigh And… I Can Dream All Day.” The quote is from a Johnny Cash song, which is very on brand for music city.

17. Drippy Lips

Address : 1814 21st Avenue South

Artist : Donald “Drawbertson” Robertson

Pose Ideas : Blow a kiss to the camera

This mural is one of the best photo backdrops. The bright red lips with “dripping” lipstick are so cute and iconic.

Nashville Mural Tours

There are three ways to see Murals in Nashville: on a guided tour, self-guided tour, or as you run into them. I recommend either of the first two options, otherwise you will be met with long lines and wasting your time.

The below guided tours are my suggestion if you want to learn about the history of the murals or be provided easy transportation and planning.

Street Art Golf Cart Tour

✅ Private & flexible itinerary

✅ Unique golf cart transportation

✅ Option to include city or brewery tour

Golf Cart Mural Tour – This mural tour visits the most iconic murals in the city, by golf cart.

The company offers a dedicated mural tour or a combination tour that includes breweries, the city, and murals.

Both tours dedicated one hour to visiting Nashville murals. On my trip to Nashville, I took the combination tour , and it was a highlight of my vacation. If you are short on time and want to squeeze a lot of Nashville exploration into a couple hours, this is the best tour for you.

Murals and Mimosas

✅ 3-hour tour

✅ Snack & mimosas included

Murals & Mimosas – This three-hour tour includes photo opportunities at the cities most popular murals across multiple neighborhoods. Afterwards, enjoy mimosas and a snack at a nearby rooftop. This tour is the best option for those seeking more time at the murals.

nashville mural self-guided tour

There are many ways to put together a self-guided tour of Nashville’s murals. Below is an example of a route to visit five murals that takes around 2-3 hours. Start at The Five Points Mural, located at 11th Ave N and Woodland St. This mural was designed by local artist Adrienne Outlaw and features a colorful abstract design.

From there, move on to the Music City Mural, located at 6th Ave S & Peabody St. This mural celebrates music culture in Nashville with its depiction of musical instruments and musical notes intertwined with a city skyline silhouette. Next, head over to The Nashville Wall Project, located at 900 Rosa L Parks Blvd. This wall features seven brightly colored murals by various artists that represent the city’s past, present, and future.

Follow this up with a visit to Dreamers Mural on 11th Ave S & Peabody Street. This mural celebrates diversity and inclusion in Music City with its intricate pattern of birds flying around letters spelling “Dreamers”. Finally, end your tour with a visit to the Pink Elephant Mural located on 4th Avenue South & Fatherland Street. This iconic mural serves as both an art piece for tourists to admire and as a reminder of Nashville’s rich history and cultural heritage. These five murals are all within close proximity of each other so you should have plenty of time for taking pictures and fully appreciating their beauty without wasting time on a commute.
