  • View history

Released fortnightly until issue 65 and weekly thereafter, the series gathered many key moments from Star Trek ' s comic book history into hardcover volumes.

Eaglemoss/Hero Collector ' Ben Robinson oversaw the publication as editorial manager, Réka Turcsányi and Rich Handley were its editors, Maggie Calmels was editorial director, and Terry Sambridge acted as design editor. Designers Ryan Cummings, Ross Jackson, Paul Montague, Steve Scanlan, and Jason Et; Tamara Dingsdale also contributed to the project.

The series encompassed a wide range of content and included Gold Key 's first Star Trek comic books that were initially published in 1967 , the British comic strips, and comic books from DC , IDW , Malibu , Marvel , Paramount , Tokyopop , and WildStorm . Movie adaptations were also covered in the series.

Comics gurus Bob Greenberger , Rich Handley, and James Swallow authored the introductory articles that prefaced each volume. Commencing with issue 72, Handley assumed editorship of the publication and authorship of these articles. [1]

Once combined, the spines of the full set of volumes formed a graphic of a fleet of starships , as seen in the image to the right. Many books incorporated the content of a modern Star Trek graphic novel with a classic comic book from the franchise's past, and each measured 175 × 260 mm.

As "Special Editions", the collection produced stand-alone "Crossover" volumes where Star Trek teamed up with another entertainment franchise in a comic series, such as Doctor Who and Planet of the Apes . Also released as Special Editions, a number of limited-run comic series were collected here as "Miniseries" compilations.

Photonovels and decorative novelty gifts were also produced for the collection.

Intro "boost" with volume 1

In May 2020 , Rich Handley announced that the partwork would be extended from 120 to 140 (regular) issues, and stated that if sales targets were reached, an extension to 160 issues was possible, providing space for the completion of all of the comics series offered within the collection. [2]

Ben Robinson indicated in October 2020 that sales of the last tranche of issues had not been strong enough to warrant a further extension, and stated that the line would conclude with the publication of issue 140. [3]

Handley added, " Within these 150 books, we've reprinted every story from Gold Key, the British strips, Peter Pan, the L.A. Times Syndicate, Marvel, Brazil's Editora Abril, Malibu, WildStorm, and Tokyopop, as well as numerous rarities and unpublished works along the way. But for DC and IDW, there's more to offer, and I wish we'd been able to bring you every single Trek comic from 1967 to the present (those not featuring X-Men, at least). We got pretty darn close! " [4]

Later, artists Jason and Tamara Dingsdale provided details and cover images of their unofficial fan-made versions of the cancelled books (volumes 141 to 160, Special Editions 7 to 10, and photonovel 5) to Wixiban.com, a noted Star Trek collectibles site. These twenty editions, however, were not based on Handley's plans for the series and were not authorized by Eaglemoss, Paramount, or CBS. [5]

Trek-lit reading order flow chart.

star trek graphic novels in order

  • Crossovers:
  • To fully immerse yourself in the litverse, the big crossover event that really starting to bring things together was the Destiny trilogy - A  great place to jump in, leading to stories from several series set after it. One step back from Destiny is Articles of the Federation , which is the perfect introduction to the world of Federation politics which becomes prominent in Destiny and beyond.
  • If you're looking to jump in further along, then  The Fall  is a good place to start; the five-part crossover brings together most of the 24th century series, and shakes up the status quo for the series as they continue independently after.
  • A cohesive series of Mirror Universe stories builds to a grand finale that has knock-on effects in the prime timeline narrative. These stories begin in the anthology Glass Empire .
  • DS9 was the first series to enjoy a post-TV relaunch; the main new DS9 adventures start from Avatar , which is also available in Twist of Faith , an omnibus of the first four books of the series.
  • The ongoing TNG narrative really starts from the A Time to… series, but you could jump on from the first book set after Nemesis , Death in Winter . Later on in the run, other good jumping on points are the Cold Equations trilogy, or  Armageddon's Arrow , the first of a run of stories from the same mission for the Enterprise.
  • Another branch of TNG , Titan , featuring Captain Riker's ship, gets going from Taking Wing , or you can explore Picard's backstory in the run of Stargazer novels which begins with Reunion .
  • Voyager 's first post- Endgame stories start from Homecoming , but the series got something of a second start later with the return to the Delta Quadrant in  Full Circle .
  • Enterprise:
  • Enterprise 's post finale adventures begin from The Good That Men Do . This series also has secondary relaunch with the post-Romulan War era in A Choice of Futures  beginning the Rise of the Federation series.
  • TOS doesn't have quite the same sort of ongoing narrative as the other series, but there are a few books that form a loose continuity, and The Captain's Oath is a good place to start with those.
  • If you're looking for something more serialised in the 23rd century, then check out  Vanguard , which starts from Harbinger , and spawned a spin-off series Seekers , beginning with Second Nature .
  • A side-step from regular TOS adventures gives us a linked series of books featuring the Star Trek universe of the 20th and 21st centuries. A good place to start exploring these is the Eugenics Wars duology.
  • Other spin-offs
  • New Frontier was the first major spin-off Star Trek book series, featuring the adventures of Captain Calhoun and the USS Excalibur. The series begins with House of Cards , but the first four books were all short, and are also available as a single omnibus .
  • IKS Gorkon , retitled in its final book as Klingon Empire , is a Klingon series, which got it's first moment's in the TNG novel Diplomatic Implausibility .
  • Not listed in full on the chart is  Corps of Engineers , also known as SCE , this extensive series of novellas features the engineering specialists of the USS da Vinci and crosses over into other series every so often. Their stories begin with  The Belly of the Beast , or an omnibus of the first four books in the series,  Have Tech, Will Travel .
  • Department of Temporal Investigations features the time traveling hijinks, and frustrated bureaucracy, of the Federation's time police. Their adventures start (depending on how you perceive time) with Watching the Clock .
  • Prometheus is a unique series, the first tie-in to be originally written in German, but also available in English. A trilogy of books featuring the distinctive ship begins with Fire with Fire .

Thanks for the hard work !!! i do really appreciate it. Do you have plans on updating from time to time ??? regards

It's on version 2 at the moment, I'll probably do an update once The Fall is done and we know what effect that has on everything :)

Thank you so much for updating this. It is possible to find the info yourself on Memory Alpha etc but this is a much easier way to do it and a good way too not scare off new readers with them having to do too much own research.

Where is Spock Must Die in this? Also, you have a typo in the title of "Greater Than the Sum." But... wow, just wow. What a map.

Important question: where does "Planet X", the TNG/X-Men crossover, fit in?

Thanks for the note dwasifer, fixed that error now :) Rev, Planet X doesn't really much connect to the wider continuity as far as I know (I've not read it), but I believe it's a direct sequel to the TNG/X-Men comic Second Contact, which itself takes place immediately after First Contact.

This is an amazing reference. Thanks very much for putting it together. I've been using it to organise my Trek Books and for reading the 20 or so trek books that I've recently bought in the right order.

hi fantastic flow chart! ...what program did you use to create the chart?

I love you for making this. The Pocket Books Novel-verse is starting to become like it's own Star-Wars-Expanded-Universe-esque canon storyline.

This is really awesome! I love Star Trek and after watching everything 1000 times over I need new content so I figured I would dive into the book series for the first time. But where to start? This really helps answer that question and gives me a good reference! Thanks!

First, I absolutely love this thing. I've been trying to get caught up on Trek lit for a while now and this has been VERY HELPFUL. A couple constructive comments: #1 There's a dashed green line going to Serpents Among the Ruins/The Art of the Impossible/Alien Spotlight: Cardassians/Cardassia and Andor that doesn't have a beginning. It's all end arrows, so it's unclear which direction this is supposed to go. #2 Q Are Cordially Invited. I haven't read it yet so I don't know exactly where it goes but I'm thinking it needs to be included.

Hi Benjamin, apologies for the very slow reply, I hadn't spotted your comment! As you might see, we've just posted an updated version of the chart, which might help with your questions, but to expand on them: #1 We removed the multi-directional Cardassian story arrow because ti was a bit confusing indeed, but the idea was to show how all the Cardassian/Garak stories are generally a bit interconnected. But we can sort of communicate that with the series dots not, so we didn't need the confusing arrows to everywhere! #2 Q Are Cordially Invited... tells the story of the Picard/Crusher wedding, which took place some time before Greater Than the Sum. But there is a framing story on an unspecified wedding anniversary. As we couldn't spot a reference to which anniversary we've opted to put it down in almost publication order, with the other TNG ebook, just before The Fall.

Sadly the site that opens once I click on the flow chart stays blank.

Working fine for me. Anyone else having problems?

Thanks for this graphic, it really helps me and will from now on be my guide :) Do you have plans on updating it with the new novels that have been and will be released?

Of course, this is already version four, which includes most of the books coming out this year (that have connections to the wider continuity) and a few even further ahead already. As more books come we'll update accordingly, and also refine the chart once we know more connections in forthcoming books :)

@8of5 That's amazing to hear! Thanks again for your work it really helps!

Thank you for creating this. Watched all the shows, just now getting into the books! This helps a bunch!

I have watched the show, its better if you had created this flowchart with standard flowchart symbols

This is top-notch. Printed it off and have it laminated already! Been able to track all my reading and discover what else to read in some logical order. As a result, just bought 13 new books. Hunting down the older ones are a bit tricky - been using Abe Books but this can be a wee expensive when you live in Australia. Booktopia's great for the more popular and/or newer books. Just wanted to say thank-you

That should be Book Depository. Booktopia a place a hardly buy books from - but I do from time to time. Needless to say, I've never bought any Star Trek from Booktopia. Have a great day :)

I come back to this flow chart every couple of months. Just to find out which book(s) to read next. Thanks for the good work!

The DS9 upcoming book "The Empty Sack" is now titled "Rules of Accusation" and will be out in July, 2016

Thanks for the update Terry!

Hi, Any update incoming?

Working on an update right now in fact, I expect it will be up next week some time (complete with the final title for Terry's book!).

Excited to see it. thanks.

Thank you Baby Jesus I found this

This list is awesome. Unfortuantely, now that the color palette is up to 19, my mild color-blindness is making matching some of these difficult if not a lost cause. Guessing the circles are too teeny to use iconography, so probably not much to be done for it. Still, a minor issue with an awesome chart.

I did revise the colours this time around to try and make them distinct as possible, as someone made a similar remark at the last revision. But yes you're right, due to the rather large number of colours to mark all the different dots, and the dots being too small to do much else it would take a completely different design approach to make it easier to read. It's something we're aware of, but haven't found a solution yet.

A great effort / work! Kudos to you brave souls! :)

Where does the Genesis Wave fit in?

Ty for your hard work

Thanks for your work, I'm following this since version 2 and it's an amazing help for me. This is why I love Star Trek - the fans! (also: great that you included Prometheus!)

Been meaning to catch up with you - thanks for this updated and shared resource. Top-notch! Kimberley.

This has been a great resource for catching up on all of the books/series. I did find one error, though. Somehow, you've omitted A Time to Kill from the TNG:A Time To... saga in version 5. Thanks again for the hard work and maintenance!

This flowchart is really awesome. And thanks for adding "Star Trek Prometheus" But I found an error, too. "Star Trek: Prometheus: Into the Heart of Chaos" is volume III not II. "The Source of All Fury" is II. And: The connection to "Takedown" is the wrong way round. STP take place just before "Takedown" and while it was written later it references events, that take place at the beginning of "Takedown". Bernd

This chart is great, but do you have a merged list of everything in a single chronological order?

This chart is great and all, but... where's Corps of Engineers? Because I don't see it on there.

Im thinking of reading Section 31 Control. Do I need to read Disavowed first?

Absolutely. I think ~most (all) would agree. They are both great reads.

If I remember right, way back last year I had the following experience. I had Disavowed as being the next read on DS9 having been through all the others. But I had to stop reading it after a while - I felt I was missing something. So, I went a few steps back and read The Fall series (esp. A Ceremony of Losses - I think), and then went through Vanguard, Lovell and Seekers (in that order) - I'm now on Seekers #2. It's been really interesting getting familiar with all the backdrop as well as having some great reads. Anyway, whatever you do have a great read. I'm sure you'll be able to get any background info to fill in any detail behind both Disavowed & Control from the Internet (Memory Alpha or Beta) - and thanks for reminding me to order my copy of Control!

Any updates inbound?

Yeah, this list is a bit out of date right now. I'm currently reading "Available Light." (The latest TNG book as of April 2019)

Please could this list be updated, I used to rely on this as which book to read and in what sequence but its now outdated.

Also really looking forward to an update :) would be really appreciated.

Also looking for an update, I use this to find out when new stuff is out, I didn't even know about Collateral Damage

I only just found out about Collateral Damage as well. This graphic is quickly falling behind! I hope it gets updated, it has been a valuable resource.

Kudos to the flow chart. That is awesome and exactly what I was looking for.

Everyone that's been asking for an update, please check the page now :)

Thank you very much for taking the time to update and expand it. Been using it since version 1. I almost read all novels that are one the chart and feeling both sadness that the litverse as we know it will come to an end. But I'm looking forward to what's to come and if there will be one last novel to bring the novelverse in line with Picard.

star trek graphic novels in order

Great chart!! Thanks for the update. Loving your work. #LLAP

This is fantastic! Thanks for all of the work you did putting this together!

Just a quick nitpick, the "Created By" section in the 2020 version has a typo (I'm assuming). It says "For the latest version, and additional notes, visit: TrekTrekCollective.com" Looks like there's an extra "Trek" in the url. That said, I love the chart. Thank you!

Is a new version planned for rhe chart? One that goes up to the upcoming Coda trilogy?

There are a couple references to the Enterprise-E’s recent experience with the Genesis Wave in A Time to Sow.

How to Watch Star Trek in Order: The Complete Series Timeline

The full star trek timeline, explained..

How to Watch Star Trek in Order: The Complete Series Timeline - IGN Image

Ever since 1966’s premiere of the first episode of Star Trek: The Original Series, the entertainment world has never been the same. This franchise that has boldly gone where no property has gone before has captured the hearts and minds of millions around the world and has grown into a space-faring empire of sorts filled with multiple shows, feature length films, comics, merchandise, and so much more. That being said, the amount of Star Trek out in the world can make it tough to know exactly how to watch everything it offers in either chronological or release order so you don’t miss a thing. To help make things easier for you, we’ve created this guide to break down everything you need to know about engaging with this Star Trek journey.

It used to be a bit trickier to track down all the Star Trek shows and movies you’d need to watch to catch up, but Paramount+ has made it a whole lot easier as it has become the home of nearly all the past, present and future Star Trek entries.

So, without further ado, come with us into the final frontier and learn how you can become all caught up with the adventures of Kirk, Picard, Janeway, Sisko, Spock, Pike, Archer, Burnham, and all the others that have made Star Trek so special over the past 56 years.

And, in case you're worried, everything below is a mostly spoiler-free chronological timeline that will not ruin any of any major plot points of anything further on in the timeline. So, you can use this guide as a handy way to catch up without ruining much of the surprise of what’s to come on your adventure! If you’d prefer to watch everything Star Trek as it was released, you’ll find that list below as well!

How to Watch Star Trek in Chronological Order

  • How to Watch Star Trek by Release Order

1. Star Trek: Enterprise (2151-2155)

Star Trek: Enterprise is the earliest entry on our list as it takes place a hundred years before the adventures of Kirk, Spock, and the rest of the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series. The show aired from 2001 to 2005 and starred Scott Bakula as Jonathan Archer, the captain of the Enterprise NX-01. This version of the Enterprise was actually Earth’s first starship that was able to reach warp five.

While the show had its ups and downs, it included a fascinating look at a crew without some of the advanced tech we see in other Star Trek shows, the first contact with various alien species we know and love from the Star Trek universe, and more.

2. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 1 and 2 (2256-2258)

star trek graphic novels in order

This is where things get a little bit tricky, as the first two seasons of Star Trek: Discovery take place before Star Trek: The Original Series but Seasons 3 and 4 take us boldly to a place we’ve not gone before. We won’t spoil why that’s the case here, but it’s important to note if you want to watch Star Trek in order, you’ll have to do a bit of jumping around from series to movie to series.

As for what Star Trek: Discovery is, it's set the decade before the original and stars Sonequa Martin-Green’s Michael Burnham, a Starfleet Commander who accidentally helps start a war between the United Federation of Planets and the Klingon Empire. She gets court-martialed and stripped of her rank following these events and is reassigned to the U.S.S Discovery.

3. Star Trek: Strange New Worlds (2259-TBD)

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds also begins before the events of Star Trek: The Original Series and is set up by Star Trek: Discovery as its captain, Anson Mount’s Christopher Pike, makes an appearance in its second season. If that name sounds familiar, it’s because Pike first appeared in the original failed pilot episode “The Cage” of Star Trek: The Original Series and would later become James T. Kirk’s predecessor after the original actor, Jefferey Hunter, backed out of the show.

Fast forward all these years later and now we get to learn more about the story of Christopher Pike and many other familiar faces from The Original Series alongside new characters. It’s made even more special as the ship the crew uses is the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701, the very same that would soon call Kirk its captain.

4. Star Trek: The Original Series (2265-2269)

star trek graphic novels in order

The fourth Star Trek series or movie you should watch in the order is the one that started it all - Star Trek: The Original Series . Created by Gene Roddenberry, this first Star Trek entry would kick off a chain reaction that would end up creating one of the most beloved IPs of all time. However, it almost never made it to that legendary status as its low ratings led to a cancellation order after just three seasons that aired from 1966 to 1969. Luckily, it found great popularity after that and built the foundation for all the Star Trek stories we have today.

Star Trek: The Original Series starred William Shatner as James T. Kirk and Leonard Nimoy as Spock, but the rest of the crew would go on to become nearly as iconic as they were. As for what the show was about? Well, we think Kirk said it best during each episode’s opening credits;

“Space: the final frontier. These are the voyages of the starship Enterprise . Its five-year mission: to explore strange new worlds, to seek out new life and new civilizations, to boldly go where no man has gone before.”

5. Star Trek: The Animated Series (2269-2270)

While Star Trek: The Original Series may have been canceled after just three seasons, its popularity only grew, especially with the help of syndication. Following this welcome development, Gene Roddenberry decided he wanted to continue the adventures of the crew of the Enterprise NCC-1701 in animated form, and he brought back many of the original characters and the actors behind them for another go.

Star Trek: The Animated Series lasted for two seasons from 1973 to 1974 and told even more stories of the Enterprise and its adventures throughout the Milky Way galaxy.

6. Star Trek: The Motion Picture (2270s)

star trek graphic novels in order

The first Star Trek film was a very big deal as it brought back the crew of Star Trek: The Original Series after the show was canceled in 1969 after just three seasons. However, even it had a rough road to theaters as Roddenberry initially failed to convince Paramount Pictures it was worth it in 1975. Luckily, the success of Close Encounters of the Third Kind and other factors helped finally convince those in power to make the movie and abandon the plans for a new television series called Star Trek: Phase II, which also would have continued the original story.

In Star Trek: The Motion Picture, James T. Kirk was now an Admiral in Starfleet, and certain events involving a mysterious alien cloud of energy called V’Ger cause him to retake control of a refitted version of the U.S.S. Enterprise with many familiar faces in tow.

7. Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan (2285)

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry had a sequel to Star Trek: The Motion Picture written, but Paramount turned it down after the reception to that first film was not what the studio had hoped for. In turn, Paramount removed him from the production and brought in Harve Bennett and Jack B. Sowards to write the script and Nicholas Meyer to direct the film.

The studio’s decision proved to be a successful one as Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan is considered by many, including IGN, to be the best Star Trek film. As for the story, it followed the battle between Admiral James T. Kirk and the crew of the U.S.S. Enterprise vs. Ricardo Montalban’ Khan Noonien Singh. Khan is a genetically engineered superhuman and he and his people were exiled by Kirk on a remote planet in the episode ‘Space Seed’ from the original series. In this second film, after being stranded for 15 years, Khan wants revenge.

8. Star Trek III: The Search for Spock (2285)

star trek graphic novels in order

Star Trek III: The Search for Spock continues the story that began in Wrath of Khan and deals with the aftermath of Spock’s death. While many on the U.S.S. Enterprise thought that was the end for their science officer, Kirk learns that Spock’s spirit/katra is actually living inside the mind of DeForest Kelley’s Dr. McCoy, who has been acting strange ever since the death of his friend. What follows is an adventure that includes a stolen U.S.S. Enterprise, a visit from Spock’s father Sarek, a run-in with Klingons, and so much more.

9. Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home (2286 and 1986)

While it is undoubtedly great that Kirk and his crew saved Spock, it apparently wasn’t great enough to avoid the consequences that follow stealing and then losing the Enterprise. On their way to answer for their charges, the former crew of the Enterprise discover a threat to Earth that, without spoiling anything, causes them to go back in time to save everything they love. The Voyage Home is a big departure from the previous films as, instead of space, we spend most of our time in 1986’s San Francisco.

10. Star Trek V: The Final Frontier (2287)

star trek graphic novels in order

Star Trek V: The Final Frontier once again brings back our favorite heroes from Star Trek: The Original Series, but it’s often regarded as one of the weakest films starring Kirk, Spock, McCoy, etc. In this adventure, our crew’s shore leave gets interrupted as they are tasked with going up against the Vulcan Sybok, who himself is on the hunt for God in the middle of the galaxy.

11. Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country (2293)

Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country is the final movie starring the entire cast of Star Trek: The Original Series, and it puts the Klingons front and center. After a mining catastrophe destroys the Klingon moon of Praxis and threatens the Klingon’s homeworld, Klingon Chancellor Gorkon is forced to abandon his species' love of war in an effort to seek peace with the Federation. What follows is an adventure that calls back to the fall of the Soviet Union and the Berlin Wall and serves as a wonderful send-off to characters we’ve come to know and love since 1966, even though some will thankfully appear in future installments.

12. Star Trek: The Next Generation (2364-2370)

star trek graphic novels in order

After you make it through all six of the Star Trek: The Original Series movies, it’s time to start what many consider the best Star Trek series of all time - Star Trek: The Next Generation . The series, which starred Patrick Stewart as Captain Jean-Luc Picard, ran from 1987 through 1994 with 178 episodes over seven seasons.

There are so many iconic characters and moments in The Next Generation, including William Riker, Data, Worf, Geordi La Forge, Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher, and many of these beloved faces would return for Star Trek: Picard, which served as a continuation of this story.

While we are once again on the U.S.S. Enterprise in Star Trek: The Next Generation, this story takes place a century after the events of Star Trek: The Original Series. However, there may just be a few familiar faces that pop up from time to time.

13. Star Trek Generations (2293)

While Star Trek Generations is the first film featuring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew, it also features a team-up that many had dreamed of for years and years between Captain Jean-Luc Picard and Captain James T. Kirk.

Our heroes are facing off against an El-Aurian named Dr. Tolian Soran, who will do whatever is necessary to return to an extra-dimensional realm known as the Nexus. Without spoiling anything, these events lead to a meeting with these two legendary captains and a heartfelt-at-times send-off to The Original Series, even though not every character returned that we wished could have.

14. Star Trek: First Contact (2373)

star trek graphic novels in order

Star Trek: First Contact was not only the second film featuring the crew from Star Trek: The Next Generation, but it also served as the motion picture directorial debut for William Riker actor Jonathan Frakes. In this film, the terrifying Borg take center stage and force our heroes to travel back in time to stop them from conquering Earth and assimilating the entire human race.

This movie picks up on the continuing trauma caused by Jean-Luc Picard getting assimilated in the series and becoming Locutus of Borg, and we are also treated to the first warp flight in Star Trek’s history, a shout-out to Deep Space Nine, and more.

15. Star Trek: Insurrection (2375)

Star Trek: Insurrection, which unfortunately ranked last on our list of the best Star Trek movies, is the third film starring the Star Trek: The Next Generation crew and followed a story involving an alien race that lives on a planet with more-or-less makes them invincible due to its rejuvenating properties. This alien race, known as the Ba’Ku, are being threatened by not only another alien race called the Son’a, but also the Federation. Captain Jean-Luc Picard and his crew disobey Federation orders in hopes to save the peaceful Ba’Ku, and while it sounds like an interesting premise, many said it felt too much like an extended episode of the series instead of a big blockbuster film.

16. Star Trek: Nemesis (2379)

star trek graphic novels in order

The final Star Trek: The Next Generation movie is Star Trek: Nemesis , and it also isn’t looked at as one of the best. There are bright parts in the film, including Tom Hardy’s Shinzon who is first thought to be a Romulan praetor before it’s revealed he is a clone of Captain Jean-Luc Picard, but it also features a lot of retreaded ground. There are some great moments between our favorite TNG characters, but it’s not quite the goodbye many had hoped for. Luckily, this won’t be the last we’ll see of them.

17. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine (2369-2375)

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine is the fourth Star Trek series and it ran from 1993 to 1999 with 176 episodes over seven seasons. Deep Space Nine was also the first Star Trek series to be created without the direct involvement of Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry, but instead with Rick Berman and Michael Piller. Furthermore, it was the first series to begin when another Star Trek Series - The Next Generation - was still on the air.

The connections between The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine don’t end there, as there were a ton of callbacks to TNG in Deep Space Nine, and characters like Worf and Miles O’Brien played a big part in the series. Other TNG characters popped up from time to time, including Captain Jean-Luc Picard, and certain Deep Space Nine characters also showed their faces in TNG.

Deep Space Nine was a big departure from the Star Trek series that came before, as it not only took place mostly on a space station - the titular Deep Space Nine - but it was the first to star an African American as its central character in Avery Brooks’ Captain Benjamin Sisko.

Deep Space Nine was located in a very interesting part of the Milky Way Galaxy as it was right next to a wormhole, and the series was also filled with conflict between the Cardassians and Bajorans, the war between the Federation and the Dominion, and much more.

18. Star Trek: Voyager (2371-2378)

star trek graphic novels in order

Star Trek: Voyager is the fifth Star Trek series and it ran from 1995 to 2001 with 172 episodes over seven seasons. Star Trek: Voyager begins its journey at Deep Space Nine, and then it follows the tale of Kate Mulgrew’s Captain Kathryn Janeway (the first female leading character in Star Trek history!) and her crew getting lost and stranded in the faraway Delta Quadrant.

The episodes and adventures that follow all see the team fighting for one goal: getting home. Being so far away from the Alpha Quadrant we were so used to letting Star Trek be very creative in its storytelling and give us situations and alien races we’d never encountered before.

That doesn’t mean it was all unfamiliar, however, as the Borg became a huge threat in the later seasons. It’s a good thing too, as that led to the introduction of Jeri Ryan’s Seven of Nine, a character who would continue on to appear in Star Trek: Picard and become a fan favorite.

19. Star Trek: Lower Decks (2380-TBD)

Star Trek: Lower Decks debuted in 2020 and was the first animated series to make it to air since 1973’s Star Trek: The Animated Series. Alongside having that feather in its cap, it also sets itself apart by choosing to focus more on the lower lever crew instead of the captain and senior staff.

This leads to many fun adventures that may not be as high stakes as the other stories, but are no less entertaining. There have already been three seasons of Star Trek: Lower Decks, and the fourth season is set to arrive later this summer.

The series is also worth a watch as it is having a crossover with Star Trek: Strange New Worlds that will mix the worlds of live-action and animation.

20. Star Trek: Prodigy (2383-TBD)

Star Trek: Prodigy was the first fully 3D animated Star Trek series ever and told a story that began five years after the U.S.S. Voyager found its way back home to Earth. In this series, which was aimed for kids, a group of young aliens find an abandoned Starfleet ship called the U.S.S. Protostar and attempt to make it to Starfleet and the Alpha Quadrant from the Delta Quadrant.

Voyager fans will be delighted to know that Kate Mulgrew returns as Kathryn Janeway in this animated series, but not only as herself. She is also an Emergency Training Holographic Advisor that was based on the likeness of the former captain of the U.S.S. Voyager.

The second season of Star Trek: Prodigy was set to arrive later this year, but it was not only canceled in June, but also removed from Paramount+. There is still hope this show may find a second life on another streaming service or network.

21. Star Trek: Picard (2399-2402)

star trek graphic novels in order

Star Trek: Picard is the… well… next generation of Star Trek: The Next Generation as it brings back not only Partick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard, but also many of his former crew members from the beloved series. The story is set 20 years after the events of Star Trek Nemesis and we find Picard retired from Starfleet and living at his family’s vineyard in France.

Without spoiling anything, certain events get one of our favorite captains back to work and take him on an adventure through space and time over three seasons and 30 episodes.

The show had its ups and downs, but the third season, in our opinion, stuck the landing and gave us an “emotional, exciting, and ultimately fun journey for Jean-Luc and his family - both old and new - that gives the character the send-off that he has long deserved.”

22. Star Trek: Discovery: Seasons 3 and 4 (3188-TBD)

While Star Trek: Discovery begins around 10 years before Star Trek: The Original Series, the show jumps more than 900 years into the future into the 32nd Century following the events of the second season. The Federation is not in great shape and Captain Michael Burnham and her crew work to bring it back to what it once was.

Star Trek: Discovery is set to end after the upcoming fifth season, which will debut on Paramount+ in 2024.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is a series of books written by various authors, based on the likewise named TV series created by Gene Roddenberry, who was also the executive producer of the original 1966 series, Star Trek: The Original Series. It is a sci-fi based adventure series with elements of drama. All the books in the series, which started in 1987, are based on the episodes of the TV series, and thus follow very similar story threads. The Star Trek series has inspired many a modern scientist with it’s depictions of (then) futuristic technology and equipment such as mobile phones and tablet devices. It is considered one of the classic sci-fi creations, and is a must for all fans of the genre. The series is renowned for it’s depth of content, with realistic characters and a vast galaxy populated by political groups and factions akin to the Foundation series by Isaac Asimov. Books based on Star Trek: The Next Generation are aimed at readers who are familiar with the original series, and it’s plot has various references to the original throughout the text. Star Trek: The Next Generation (TV debut: Sep 28, 1987), often abbreviated as TNG, depicts the adventures of Captain Jean-Luc Picard aboard the starship USS Enterprise NCC-1701-D. It is set in the year 2364, 100 years after the “five-year mission” (from the original series). The basic thread across the entire plot of the series is the exploration of outer space, with the captain and his crew of 1,012 seeking new life and civilization. The NCC-1701-D is unique in the sense that it was designed to accommodate families, rather than just individuals – thus, the crew consists of men, women and children. The plot begins when Picard is tasked by a godlike entity named ‘Q’ to prove that the human race is not made up of mere savages, failing which it would bring extinction to mankind. The first mission is to prove their aptitude for this task by solving a certain mystery, solving which the crew proceed to explore deep space, and encounter various villainous groups. They soldier through space, making difficult choices and facing new foes. The plot is intriguing all the way to the eventual final encounter with the mysterious entity that is ‘Q’, and Picard’s handling of his original task.

Here are a list of the characters which appear at various points across the series:

Captain Jean-Luc Picard is the commanding officer of the USS Enterprise-D. He is the main protagonist of the story, and his character is a mainstay throughout it’s entirety. He is depicted as a master diplomat, with the ability and cunning to solve seemingly unsolvable conundrums. Ever the ideal hero, he often chooses what is just morally right, and willing to live with the consequences and sacrifices forced by such decisions. In the first book, “Encounter at Farpoint”, Picard’s qualities are finely illustrated – as the Enterprise-D takes off on it’s space quest, the ethereal ‘Q’ threatens to extinguish the humans race. It is Picard who convinces Q to allow him to show that humanity still exists, and is a cause worth saving.

William Riker is the first officer of the Enterprise-D. He is depicted as a young officer who becomes experienced and wise with time spent on aboard the ship. Initially portrayed as an arrogant rookie officer, with a disregard for his colleagues and the chain-of-command, Riker’s character gradually matures as the plot moves on. Eventually, he learns the key virtue of patience, and appreciates the company offered to him by the crew of the ship. At certain points in the plot, however, Riker display his original bold streak and acts against his superiors’ wishes.

Geordi La Forge is initially the Helmsman, and later the Chief Engineer of the ship. La Forge’s character is a tribute to a real-life quadriplegic fan of the original Star Trek series. He is visually impaired, but uses a device called the VISOR which allows him to see the world around him. He is depicted as a hard working, dedicated crew member. He impresses Picard by diligently working overnight to repair a minor problem, following which he is granted the post of helmsman of the Enterprise-D. As the plot progresses, he is given more important posts, with the rank of Lieutenant Commander being his highest post.

Natasha “Tasha” Yar is the chief security officer of the USS Enterprise-D. Her character is described as one coming from difficult, and sultry origins, as a result of which she relishes her experiences as a member of the crew. She is described as a bold woman – in the series, and even accompanies Captain Picard in a direct conflict situation. However, her character digresses early on from the main TNG story-line, but reappears at various points in the plot at different timelines. She is present in all the books upto season 1 of the series.

Worf is a non-human character, and the first Klingon main character in the series. Initially appointed as a lieutenant junior grade, he is promoted following the death of key characters in the series. A notable section of the plot deals with the Klingon, depicting Worf’s experiences as he encounters more beings of his race. Worf’s adventures provide for side-stories which further enhances the feeling of depth in the Star Trek world. Beverly Crusher is the chief medical officer aboard the ship. She is briefly replaced by the a character named Katherine Pulasky, when Crusher accepts a position as the head of the Starfleet Medical, but subsequently returns to the main storyline, and stays for the entire duration. Given the very nature of her work, Crusher’s role assumes importance throughout the story. Like all the other main characters, sufficient background information about her is provided at some point in the plot. However, her individual tales are mainly side-stories and do not directly influence the grand scheme of proceedings. She has a son aboard the ship, who goes by the name of Wesley Crusher.

Wesley Crusher is the son of Beverly Crusher. After spending his initial years aboard the ship, he receives a field commission to ensign. He then goes on to attend the Starfleet academy.

Lieutenant Commander Deanna Troi is a mixed race character, being half-human and half-Betazoid. She is portrayed as having the ability to sense emotions, and is thus apt for the role of counselor in the ship. Because of her unique mind, her character is often utilized as a bridge between aliens and the crew members. In several turnkey episodes, Troi’s special abilities enable her to play a key role in the events which unfold.

Lieutenant Commander Data is an Android, which is an artificially constructed being with self-awareness, sapience and sentience. Being non-human, his perspectives on the human situation offer valuable self-evaluative passages, akin to Spock in the original Star Trek series. Data assumes the role of Chief Operations Officer aboard the ship. He is depicted as a confused bot, initially unable to understand human emotions. The allows avenues for comic relief, but also forms a key plot element, when he is given an emotion chip. He has exceptional computational capabilities and a fully working anatomy.

BOOK – Star Trek: Open a Channel – A Woman’s Trek

By Nana Visitor

Release Date: October 1, 2024 (Previously delayed)

From the Publisher: Nana Visitor, Star Trek’s Kira Nerys, explores how the series has portrayed and influenced women. Interviews with the stars, writers, producers, and celebrity fans reveal the struggles and triumphs of women both behind and in front of the camera throughout the sixty-year history of  Star Trek , and how they have mirrored the experiences of women everywhere. The groundbreaking casting of Nichelle Nichols as Lt. Uhura in 1966 took women and people of color into a newly imagined future. But it was the 1960s and she had to do it in a miniskirt.

Since then, each  Star Trek  show has both rejected the values of its time and imagined a future in which all genders were equal. In her first book,  Star Trek: Deep Space Nine  star Nana Visitor sets out to discover both how  Star Trek  led the way for women, and how it was trapped in its own era.

For Visitor, this is more than a book about  Star Trek . It’s about how society and the stories we tell have evolved in the last 60 years, and how the role of women has changed in that time.

Inside the Book:

STAR AUTHOR:   Written by  Star Trek  actor Nana Visitor, famous for playing Major Kira Nerys. This is both her story and her journey through the stories of other women involved with  Star Trek  from the 1960s to the 21st century.

EXCLUSIVE INTERVIEWS:   Features interviews with almost every woman who has starred in  Star Trek , including Kate Mulgrew, Terry Farrell, Denise Crosby, Mary Wiseman, and Rebecca Romijn.

INSPIRING STORIES:   Explore how  Star Trek  has influenced women in the real world, including soldiers, scientists, and even astronauts. In one remarkable episode, author Nana Visitor interviewed astronaut Samantha Cristoforetti while she was in orbit around Earth on the International Space Station.

PIONEERING SERIES:   Star Trek  has often taken a leading role in promoting women on both sides of the camera. It had women writers when they were rare, and it introduced female captain Kathryn Janeway in  Star Trek: Voyager  in 1995.

Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection: The Lost 20-Volume Expansion

A few years back, I had the privilege of serving as the editor of Eaglemoss’s hardcover Star Trek Graphic Novel Collection , starting with volume 72. However, I’d actually come aboard as of volume 10, as I’d been hired to write many of the introductions to the series. When the original editor stepped down, I was promoted and remained aboard until the STGNC was prematurely canceled as of volume 140. In total, I ended up writing intros for 100 volumes (alternating with my friend Robert Greenberger, formerly the editor of DC Comics’ incredible Star Trek line) and editing 70 of them.

Though numbered 1-140, the series spanned 150 books, as it also included six “Specials” (reprinting crossover miniseries) and four out of five planned “Upsell” editions (reprinting John Byrne’s Star Trek: New Visions photo-comics). We came very close to reprinting every Star Trek comic published from 1967 to 2020, but Eaglemoss’s financial problems (which eventually led to the company going out of business) cut us off at the knees before our next planned 20-book expansion. The readers, the creators, and those of us working on the STGNC were saddened by the news.

star trek graphic novels in order

That expansion would have allowed us to complete the history of Star Trek comics by filling in all the remaining gaps. Had it been produced, fans would have had every story from Gold Key, Marvel, Power Records, Editora Abril, the L.A. Times Syndicate, the British comic strip publishers, DC, Malibu, Wildstorm, Marvel/Paramount, Tokyopop, Wired, and IDW, all combined in a single set of books with matching spines.

As it happens, we managed to complete pretty much everything except for some DC and IDW stragglers. We even managed to work in a bunch of cool extras and rarities, including previously unpublished scripts, outlines, and artwork, and you can view a breakdown of what we reprinted. The final expansion would have taken care of the rest. Sadly, those final books didn’t happen. But since the STGNC ‘s cancelation, I’ve often been asked what the planned lineup was. So at long last, I’ve decided to reveal what never was but should have been:

Vol. 141: VERITAS: DC Star Trek 32-34 and Annuals 3-5 (6 issues)

Vol. 142: STAR TREK/X-MEN: Marvel Star Trek/X-Men: Star TreX and TNG/X-Men: Second Contact ; EXTRAS: Klingon-language variants of Marvel’s Starfleet Academy #18 and IDW’s Klingons: Blood Will Tell #1 and Manifest Destiny (5 issues)

Vol. 143: MIRROR BROKEN: IDW TNG: Mirror Broken (7 issues)

Vol. 144: THROUGH THE MIRROR: IDW TNG: Through the Mirror (5 issues)

Vol. 145: THE TABUKAN SYNDROME: DC Star Trek 35-41 (7 issues); EXTRA: Peter David and Gordon Purcell’s unpublished Star Trek #16-17

Vol. 146: LIGHT OF KAHLESS: IDW Discovery: Light of Kahless , Discovery Annual and Captain Saru (6 issues)

Vol. 147: YEAR FIVE—ODYSSEY’S END: IDW Year Five 1-8 (8 issues)

Vol. 148: ACCEPTABLE RISK: DC Star Trek 42-50 (9 issues)

Vol. 149: SUCCESSION: IDW Discovery: Succession and Aftermath (7 issues)

Vol. 150: TERRA INCOGNITA: IDW TNG: Terra Incognita (6 issues)

Vol. 151: TIME CRIME: DC Star Trek 51-57 (7 issues)

Vol. 152: YEAR FIVE—THE WINE-DARK DEEP: IDW Year Five 9-16 and Valentine’s Day Special (9 issues)

Vol. 153: THE Q CONFLICT: IDW The Q Conflict (6 issues)

Vol. 154: THE ALONE: DC Star Trek 58-65 (8 issues)

Vol. 155: YEAR FIVE—WEAKER THAN MAN: IDW Year Five 17-25 (9 issues)

Vol. 156: A WOLF IN CHEAP CLOTHING: DC Star Trek 66-72 (7 issues)

Vol. 157: TOO LONG A SACRIFICE: IDW DS9: Too Long a Sacrifice (4 issues)

Vol. 158: SEVEN’S RECKONING: IDW Voyager: Seven’s Reckoning and Voyager: Mirrors & Smoke (5 issues)

Vol. 159: THE TREK LIFE: All the humorous Star Trek strips from Chris Cooper ( Starship Trekkers ) and David Reddick ( The Trek Life , Red Shirts , misc. comic strips) from the official website and magazines

Vol. 159: PICARD: COUNTDOWN: IDW Picard: Countdown , IDW 20/20 and Hell’s Mirror (5 issues)

Vol. 160: STAR-CROSSED: DC Star Trek 73-80 (8 issues)

NOTE: The reason for two vol. 159s is that I had a feeling I’d be denied permission to reprint the two Star Trek/X-Men issues, due to Marvel having previously nixed the idea. Had that happened, I’d have moved PICARD: COUNTDOWN to vol. 142 in place of the X-Men two-parter. If I had been allowed to include the X-Men issues in 142, however (we were hopeful the situation might change), my plan was to run PICARD: COUNTDOWN in vol. 159 and, regrettably, remove the humor strips. In addition to the numbered volumes, I also planned to add the following Special and Upsell editions, along with a proposed third set of un-numbered volumes, titled STAR TREK: OLD VISIONS.

UPSELL 5: NEW VISIONS VOL. 5: IDW New Visions 21–22, plus Strange New Worlds , Eye of the Beholder , More of the Serpent Than the Dove , and the bonus story from trade paperback volume 8. (Incidentally, I’ve always found it amusing that these books were called “Upsell,” as that term does not have a positive connotation in the United States. Here, it means to coerce a customer into buying something additional or more expensive, such as a fast-food worker pushing someone to purchase a large-sized drink instead of the medium they’d asked for, or to add fries or a dessert. Presumably, the term has a more positive meaning in the United Kingdom. But I did chuckle the first time I saw it.)

SPECIAL 7: ASSIMILATION 2 : IDW Doctor Who/Star Trek (8 issues)

SPECIAL 8: STAR TREK VS. TRANSFORMERS: IDW Star Trek vs. Transformers (5 issues)

STAR TREK: OLD VISIONS: The classic Star Trek Fotonovel and Star Trek Photostory editions from the 1970s, which had inspired New Visions (14 digests spread out over two or three volumes, but never proposed due to Eaglemoss’s closure)

And after all the above? Well, what I’d recommended to Eaglemoss had been to keep the Graphic Novel Collection going, but no longer in 20-book sets since there wouldn’t be enough new content to plan it out that way. Since IDW was (and still is) continuing to produce new Star Trek lore, what I figured we’d do would be to produce new volumes one at a time as IDW finished up each miniseries, or as enough issues of an ongoing line warranted a new volume. Theoretically, the STGNC could have continued indefinitely beyond the “lost” expansion, but with breaks while we waited for that new material, and we could have used all the humor strips as extras in those books, eventually completing those as well.

I will always regret that our creative team (me as editor, graphic artist Ross Jackson, and art director Terry Sambridge) never got to complete what we’d set out to do. Despite things going badly at Eaglemoss, the three of us were a well-oiled machine and we genuinely enjoyed putting together these books. It was sheer fun working with Terry and Ross, and losing that gig was heartbreaking. I felt we’d let the fans down, and I also felt a sense of loss at not having finished the job.

We pushed and urged and pretty much begged, but the answer was unfortunately “no can do,” and so we were crushed at never having completed the set. We wanted to see it completed as much as the readers did. I even tried reaching out to other publishers to see if they’d pick up the reins, but nothing materialized, despite their interest. In the end, these 20-plus final volumes remained firmly in the “what could have been” category, and that is something I will always regret.

(My thanks to Matt Gilbert and Wayne Burman for all the guidance and assistance they always freely provided during my tenure as editor.)

Star Trek: Best Book-Only Characters

  • The Star Trek novels introduce unique characters like Akaar and Treir, adding depth to the expansive Starfleet universe.
  • Characters like Nick Keller and Elias Vaughn bring new perspectives to the post- DS9 era, facing challenging galactic events.
  • Mackenzie Calhoun leads the USS Excalibur in a new hero ship series, showcasing tactical genius in the New Frontier books.

Just like the universe itself, the Star Trek franchise is huge and far-reaching, encompassing several television shows, and numerous video games, movies, and books. While many of Star Trek 's most iconic characters appear in various series and films, there are many other great characters who only feature in alternative media sources. For instance, the final frontier has spawned some memorable video game-based characters .

Star Trek: 8 Most Powerful Federation Starships, Ranked

Yet perhaps the richest source of characters is the now questionably canon series of books that take place following The Next Generation and Deep Space Nine . From fresh takes on classic species like the Andorians and Orions, to some of Starfleet's finest officers, the Star Trek novels are a treasure trove of notable figures.

Leonard James Akaar

First appearence: star trek mission gamma book one: twilight.

  • Author: David R. George III
  • Publication Date: September 2002

Leonard James Akaar is unique among novel-only characters in that he does, in fact, make a blink-and-you'll-miss-it appearance on televised Trek . "Friday's Child," an episode of The Original Series , ends with his birth; however, the Capellan royal would not be seriously fleshed out until 2002's Mission Gamma: Twilight . By the time of the Deep Space 9 novels, Akaar had risen through the ranks of Starfleet to become an influential admiral with the ear of the Federation president.

Akaar's strategic mindset and steely resolve proved essential in preserving the Federation through some of its darkest periods, including the Borg invasion depicted in the Star Trek: Destiny series. The Starfleet legend may have been born in The Original Series , but the Star Trek novels were where he made his name.

First Appearence: Star Trek: Demons of Air and Darkness

  • Author: Keith R. A. DeCandido
  • Publication Date: September 2001

Star Trek features many inspirational female characters, from Kira Nerys to Katherine Janeway. However, few are as resourceful or as motivated as Treir , an Orion Dabo girl who transformed Quark's Bar into a highly successful business during the post- DS9 novels. Following her escape from Orion servitude, Treir earned her place as Quark's right-hand woman by implementing a series of radical reforms, including hiring a Dabo boy to attract more customers.

Star Trek: The Fates Of Every Live-Action TV Show's Main Character

Treir may not play a significant role in the canon-shattering events depicted in the Deep Space 9 novels, but this ruthless businesswoman helped to make Star Trek 's prose universe feel like a living, breathing place. If anyone is capable of giving Quark a run for his latinum, it's her.

Nick Keller

First appearence: star trek new earth: challenger.

  • Author: Diane Carey
  • Publication Date: August 2000

New Earth , a series of six novels that take place between Star Trek: The Motion Picture and The Wrath of Khan , was intended to act as a backdoor pilot for a new narrative focusing on Commander Nick Keller . In the final novel, Keller takes command of a makeshift starship in order to defend the human colony of Belle Terre from alien attack. Keller was conflicted between overthrowing his inept captain and preserving the lives of his comrades, and it's a great shame that a full series based on the space cowboy's adventures never emerged.

Interestingly, author Diane Carey based Keller's appearance on Scott Bakula, who would go on to play Captain Jonathan Archer in Star Trek: Enterprise . Keller, however, would make only two more appearances in the Star Trek universe, with both being part of the multi-series Gateways crossover event.

Elias Vaughn

First appearence: star trek: avatar (book one).

  • Author: S. D. Perry
  • Publication Date: July 2001

Elias Vaughn was a Starfleet officer and intelligence operative who joined Deep Space 9's command staff following the end of the Dominion War . Despite only holding the rank of commander, Vaughn's expertise proved a boon to the Federation outpost, and he played a role in several key events, including the USS Defiant 's post-war exploration of the Gamma Quadrant (depicted in the Mission Gamma sub-series).

Star Trek: 8 Impressive Things Kirk Did Before Joining The USS Enterprise

Vaughn was haunted by the death of his wife, Ruriko, and his troubled relationship with his estranged daughter, Prynn. This relationship was complicated by the fact that Prynn was also assigned to Deep Space 9. However, father and daughter were eventually able to reconcile–but not without some bumps along the way.

Christine Vale

First appearence: star trek: the belly of the beast.

  • Author: Dean Wesley Smith

While William Riker's USS Titan has made notable appearances in Star Trek: Lower Decks , the starship's adventures were originally chronicled in a series of spin-off novels. These books featured Christine Vale , a former detective turned Starfleet officer, as Riker's second-in-command. Vale was initially unwilling to take the post, as she disliked the idea of Riker working so closely with his wife, Deanna Troi.

Luckily, Vale took the post, which allowed her to act as a counterweight to any of Riker's Troi-related biases. During her time aboard the USS Titan , she helped to explore the Beta Quadrant and fend off a Borg invasion. Indeed, her record was so good that, following Riker's promotion to admiral, she took command of the Luna -class starship.

Thirishar ch'Thane

From their initial appearance in 1967's "Journey to Babel" and 2001's "The Andorian Incident," references to Star Trek 's Andorians were true and far between. One important detail was disclosed in The Next Generation , however: Andorians have four sexes , with all four required for successful reproduction.

The character of Thirishar ch'Thane (or "Shar") was a response to this premise. Shar served as Deep Space Nine's science officer following the end of the Dominion War, but was torn between his commitments to Starfleet and to his mating group, who wished him to return to Andor. This dilemma was further complicated by a dangerous decline in Andorian fertility, which threatened to cause the Andorians' extinction in the long term. Shar was eventually able to use his scientific knowledge to help solve the Andorian fertility crisis.

The Jem'Hadar are one of Star Trek 's most iconic creations , a powerful race of warriors motivated by their addiction to the chemical ketracel-white. During the Dominion War of 2373–2375, the Jem'Hadar were central to the Dominion assaults which nearly overwhelmed the Federation Alliance.

8 Best Starfleet Ships During The Dominion War

After the war's conclusion, Taran'atar , a Jem'Hadar without a ketracel-white dependency, was sent to Deep Space Nine as a cultural observer. Taran'atar's struggle to adjust to the Alpha Quadrant during peacetime makes for fascinating reading, as does seeing the fearsome warrior growing closer to his former enemies. Taran'atar's story takes some strange twists and turns, but he remains a fascinating character.

Mackenzie Calhoun

First appearence: star trek new frontier: house of cards.

  • Author: Peter David
  • Publication Date: July 1997

In 1997, Pocket Books published the first of Peter David's New Frontier books. While these novels included several characters from TV Trek (mostly notably Commander Shelby from "The Best of Both Worlds" ), they focused on a new hero ship, the USS Excalibur , and a new captain: Mackenzie Calhoun . Calhoun, an alien warrior modeled after Mel Gibson, was depicted as a tactical genius capable of beating Starfleet's toughest challenges–including the infamous Kobayashi Maru test.

Calhoun soon became a fan-favorite, with his New Frontier series including over 20 volumes. The Xenanian captain was even popular enough to be made into an action figure, the only example of this honor being bestowed on a character originating from any of Star Trek 's novels.

Star Trek Blu-Ray Box Sets Receive Steep Discounts, Come With Free Comic Books

By Grabthar's Hammer, what a savings.

By Darryn Bonthuys on April 12, 2024 at 7:08AM PDT

With decades of stories, series, and movies under its belt, it's never a bad time to check out the Star Trek franchise. Especially when you can build a sizable collection thanks to these Amazon deals! Whether you're interested in the original series starring William Shatner as James T. Kirk or you want to explore more recent shows like the Picard spin-off, there's plenty to look at here. As an added bonus, spending $25 or more on these deals will earn you three free Star Trek digital comics to read.

No Caption Provided

  • Star Trek: The Original Motion Picture Collection -- $76 ($ 126 )
  • Star Trek: The Original Series: The Complete Series - Steelbook Blu-ray -- $45 ($ 70 )
  • Star Trek: Picard - The Complete Series -- $48 ($ 70 )
  • Star Trek: The Next Generation: The Complete Series -- $111 ($ 161 )
  • Star Trek: Enterprise: The Complete Series -- $58 ($ 91 )
  • Star Trek: Deep Space Nine: The Complete Series -- $60 ($ 112 )
  • Star Trek: Voyager: The Complete Series (DVD) -- $63 ($ 112 )

Kicking things off is Star Trek: The Original Series . This fancy steelbook collection contains almost 69 hours of Star Trek episodes featuring Shatner and the rest of his crew--Leonard Nimoy, Walter Koenig, George Takei, DeForest Kelley, Nichelle Nichols, and James Doohan--as they explored the cosmos, and it's still a charming showcase of classic sci-fi.

The original TV series was followed by several movies. The quality might drastically differ between films, but overall, these are still some fantastic pieces of cinema with more highs than lows. They've all been bundled together into a sharp six-movie bundle on Blu-ray , remastered in 4K, and stacked with an impressive amount of extra behind-the-scenes content. From The Wrath of Khan to The Voyage Home, this is a must-have for Star Trek fans.

Moving forward, the '80s and '90s saw a Star Trek renaissance with the release of shows like The Next Generation , Deep Space Nine , and Voyager . Each Star Trek show ran for multiple seasons and took the franchise in bold new directions under the command of their respective captains. Star Trek: Enterprise is the black sheep of the family, as this series chronicled the voyages of the first Enterprise starship across four seasons. It's not as bad as it's made out to be, and if you can ignore the wildly out-of-place country and western opening theme for each episode, it's a surprising prequel series with plenty of enjoyable stories to tell.

Lastly, you can catch up with Jean-Luc Picard in his self-titled spin-off series . Set many years after Star Trek: The Next Generation, this show follows the former Starfleet admiral as he foils plots threatening the stability of the galaxy, explores a dark future timeline thanks to the machinations of Q, and crosses paths with an old foe in the final season. Like other recent Star Trek series, Picard is a high-budget sci-fi show full of surprise cameos and top-notch special effects.

Amazon also has deals on several other Star Trek shows , like the delightfully funny Lower Decks, TNG movies, and Discovery.

In case you were wondering about Grabthar's Hammer, the phrase comes from Galaxy Quest , the 1999 parody flick with a star-studded cast that has achieved cult status over the years.
