Patagonia Itinerary – Places to Visit in 7, 10 & 15 Days

Traveling to Patagonia is dream come true for many travelers, but it can be very hard figuring out where to go and what to do when planning a Patagonia itinerary. The region is very big and covers two different countries. The logistics of traveling between the two countries and other intricacies of traveling this part of the world are covered in our How To Plan a Trip to Patagonia post.

This Patagonia itinerary covers three different itineraries for 7, 10 & 15 days but can be easily modified to fit any traveler’s needs. It is good for visitors who only have a short time to spend in the region and the ones that want to completely immerse themselves and travel less traveled paths.

If you have only one week in Patagonia, you have just enough time to visit places in and around El Calafate . In this 7-Day Patagonia itinerary, we will focus on hitting the most popular spots in both Chile and Argentina to get a taste of this amazing part of the world. For this itinerary, you will fly in and out of El Calafate, Argentina.

For this itinerary, I suggest using public and private transportation instead of renting a car.

By the time you arrive in El Calafate, it will be late morning/early afternoon. Spend the rest of the day walking through town and make your way to Reserva Laguna Nimez. Plan for dinner and the show at one of the estancias. We visited Estancia 25 de Mayo .

At the estancia, you will learn about the history of the town and Patagonia’s way of life as well as witness manual sheep shearing. Dinner is usually plentiful and delicious. Transportation is provided.

Patagonia Itinerary

We stayed at Santa Monica Aparts.

Glacier Perito Moreno in Los Glaciers National Park is what put El Calafate on the map. Its majestic beauty attracts many visitors to this region. It is only 75 km and easily accessible from El Calafate by bus, car, or private tour.

If you decide to go by bus, Caltur is the main operator. It leaves from the bus terminal twice a day, at 9 am and 1 pm.

Depending on how adventurous you are, you can explore this beautiful UNESCO site in a few different ways. Walking on the boardwalk and seeing the glacier from different angles is one of the most common ways. There are five different trails, that can be explored individually or combined with other trails.

Things to do in El Calafate

You can kayak or take a boat cruise to get closer to the glacier.

For true adventure seekers, you can trek on the glacier. There is a Big Ice trek or Minitrek both operated by the only tour operator allowed to do this Hielo y Avantura . It is an amazing experience to walk on top of the glacier.

Both experiences include a transfer to the park, a 1-hour boardwalk adventure, 20–30-minute boat ride to start the hike. However, with Big Ice Trek you will be trekking on top of the glacier for 3 hours, and with Minitrek hike only 1 hour on the glacier.

Either option is great, and the tour is finished with whisky on glacier ice and some Bon-Bons.

Back in town finish the evening with a delicious dinner at La Zaina Restaurant .

Day 3 & 4 – Torres del Paine

Torres del Paine is a National Park in Chile and is only accessible from El Calafate by private transfer or a car. No public buses go to Torres del Paine from El Calafate.

Torres del Paine is where the massive granite towers are, also home of W Trek or O Trek. W Trek is a 5-day hike, and O Trek is a 10-day hike. In a 7-Day Patagonia Itinerary, you will not have time for these hikes. However, there are plenty of day hikes you can enjoy.

The park itself has ferries and buses that can transfer you within the park to complete day hikes to the Base of the Towers, the viewpoint of Cuernos (the horns), the waterfall, Glacier Grey (where you can walk on the glacier), and all different short hikes with amazing viewpoints.

Patagonia Itinerary

Hotels you can stay at are Hotel las Torres, Hotel Lago Grey, Hosteria Pehoe, and many more. Options are endless and this park is truly worth exploring.

The drive to Torres del Paine from El Calafate is close to 4 hrs. During our first visit to Patagonia, we took a day tour from El Calafate to Torres del Paine where we visited the waterfalls and viewpoint of the Cuernos. It was a very long day that started at 4 am and we felt rushed while in the park. We decided to come back a few years later to do the W Trek and explore the park more in-depth.

If a day or two is all the time you have, I would still recommend visiting Torres del Paine but strongly recommend dedicating more time here if possible.

On day 4 make sure you have a prearranged shuttle pick up or a vehicle to take you back to El Calafate. In El Calafate, you can enjoy dinner at the amazing Morrison Restaurant.

El Chalten is an equivalent of Torres del Paine on the Argentine side. It is a small village whose existence is tied to Fitz Roy . Climbers and hikers alike, flock to this village to explore its beauty. El Chalten is 3-hour drive from El Calafate. There is a bus service to El Chalten, Chalten Travel , or you can book a private transfer or rent a car.

The main attraction in El Chalten is Fitz Roy Peak towering over the village with its majestic presence. There are a few day hikes you can take to get closer, one of them being Lagunas de los Tres . Some others are Mirador los Cóndores, Chorillo del Salto, Laguna Capri and Laguna Torre.

Patagonia Itinerary

The weather in Patagonia is very unpredictable and in El Chalten even more so. Giving yourself here a few days gives you a higher chance of getting a glimpse of Fitz.

On day 7 drive back to the airport outside of El Calafate and fly back.

10 Day Patagonia Itinerary – Patagonia for Adventurers

This 10-Day Patagonia Itinerary starts in Chile and finishes in Argentina. This means that you will fly into one country and fly out of the other. For a better understanding of different flight options and how to plan a trip like this, you can read our blog post How to Plan a Trip to Patagonia .

This Patagonia Itinerary will include 5 day W Trek , and a visit to El Chalten and Bariloche . I strongly suggest flying to Bariloche and renting a car once there.

Arrive in Puerto Natales and spend the afternoon exploring the town with a stroll by the water, possibly a stop at the Last Hope Distillery and dinner at Afrigonia .

Patagonia Itinerary

Day 2-5 – Torres del Paine

The next few days you will spend hiking in Torres del Paine. You can either do the famous W Trek or day hikes. Either can be done on your own or with a guide. We have a few posts about W Trek hike and accommodations you can check out for all the details.

Bus-Sur leaving from Puerto Natales bus station has many different options to take you to Torres del Paine. It’s the same bus line you can use for the return to Puerto Natales on day 5.

W Trek can be done east to west or west to east. What that means is that you either start the hike at the base of the Towers or finish at the base of the towers.

We started with the Towers and hiked west, finishing at Glacier Grey. From Glacier Grey, you can either take a ferry back or if the weather is not cooperating hike back to Paine Grande and take a ferry from there back to the bus stop.

Glacier Grey W Trek

TIP: Lago Grey ferry gets canceled more frequently than the Lago Pehoe ferry due to the high winds.

Since this itinerary does not include a stop in El Calafate I would suggest trekking on Glacier Grey, that way you can skip Perito Moreno. Or if you have more time to add to this itinerary you can do both.

On Day 5 return to Puerto Natales and plan an early departure the next morning to El Chalten.

Day 6 & 7 – El Chalten

Getting to El Chalten can take a long time depending on how you plan to travel. I strongly recommend renting a car as that is the quickest option and with the limited time, you don’t waste your time on the bus.

There is no direct bus from Puerto Natales to El Chalten. You would have to take a 6-hour bus to El Calafate and then get on another bus from El Calafate to El Chalten which is another 3-hour drive. Driving on your own you can make it from Puerto Natales to El Chalten in 7 hours. Either way, you will have to cross the border from Chile to Argentina.

If you leave early enough, you may have enough daylight left to either do the Laguna Capri or Chorillo del Salto hike when you get to El Chalten.

Save the full day for the Lagunas de los Tres hike. The hike to one of the world’s most amazing viewpoints, Fitz Roy.

In the interest of time, to get to Bariloche you will need to fly. On day 8 make your way to the airport in El Calafate and grab a flight to Bariloche. The flight is less than 2 hours long, but taking a bus or driving is a 24-hour adventure.

Once you arrive in Bariloche , I suggest renting a car to maximize your adventure time and not have to worry about bus schedules. Public buses are an option and are used by many travelers.

Spend the afternoon of the first day exploring the city center, tasting the world-renowned chocolate in Bariloche, walking by the lake, or taking a quick hike up to Cerro Campanario for an amazing 360-degree view.

On day 9 you can choose to do one or a few of the following things hike to Refugio Frey, Hike to Cerro Llao Llao, Hike to Cerro Tronador, visit Isla Victoria, or go on a drive of seven lakes. Whatever you choose to do you will not be disappointed as Bariloche is one of the most beautiful places in the world and beauty surrounds you wherever you go.

Patagonia Itinerary

The things we enjoyed the most were the hike to Refugio Frey walking on the edge of the mountain, visiting CervecerÍa Patagonia the brewery with the best view in the world, tasting the chocolate and driving to seven lakes.

On day 10 fly back home or to the next adventure.

15 Day Patagonia Itinerary – Less Traveled Path

This itinerary is exactly how we spent our last visit to Patagonia in December and January of 2022/2023. It is an intense itinerary, it covers a lot of ground, a lot of border crossings, renting a car, and driving on remote unpaved Patagonian roads. It was one of the best trips we ever did, one that leaves you wanting more, and one that you maybe don’t appreciate at the moment because of how intense it is but constantly reflect on.

This itinerary starts in Puerto Natales, goes to El Chalten and then crosses the border to Aysen Regions where Marble Caves, Patagonia National Park, Cerro Castillo , Hanging Glacier and Laguna San Rafael National Park is.

Arrive in Puerto Natales and spend the afternoon exploring the town with a stroll by the water, possibly a stop at the Last Hope Distillery and dinner at Afrigonia.

We stayed at Toore Patagonia.

We ended up doing a W Trek with a tour operator because we couldn’t make the accommodations work the way we needed to, to fit the rest of the trip. This particular tour operator offered accommodations the night before the trek and the night after so on Day 2 we checked in at their location and started the hike on Day 3.

For a detailed post about the W Trek check out our post, we also have posts about different accommodations, cost breakdowns , and how to book on your own .

W Trek is one of the most iconic hikes in the world that has it all peaks, valleys, massive granite towers, horns, lakes, glaciers, and you will probably experience all four seasons while hiking and possibly even in one day so come prepared with water and windproof clothing.

W Trek

Since in this itinerary, we are skipping a stop in El Calafate I would recommend doing Ice Trek on Glacier Grey for a similar experience.

Rent a car first thing in the morning and head toward El Chalten. We rented a car from EuropCar and had no issues. The main thing to remember is to let them know that you will be crossing the border to Argentina, as you will need a border crossing pass which costs approximately $30/day.

From Puerto Natales to El Chalten is a 7-hour drive at best with favorable border crossing times. We crossed the border by Rio Turbio and drove to Esperanza to avoid the Ruta 40 shortcut because it has really bad potholes and there is a gas station in Esperanza, the only one before El Chalten.

PRO TIP: Gas is much cheaper in Argentina than in Chile. I would recommend carrying at least a 20-liter (5 gallon) gas tank with you during this itinerary as gas stations are few and far in between.

Hopefully, upon your arrival to El Chalten, the clouds will be gone and you will have one of the most iconic views driving in.

Settle in your accommodations and explore the town in the evening.

PRO TIP: Driving in between towns in Patagonia cellphone reception is non-existent but usually in towns if you have a data plan you should have some connection. In El Chalten, I had none and even wi-fi is very weak at most accommodations.

While in El Chalten the most beautiful hike is a hike to Laguna de Los Tres . Some other options are Mirador los Cóndores, Chorillo del Salto, Laguna Capri and Laguna Torre, weather permitting.

Patagonia Itinerary

We stayed at Estancia Bonanza, 12 km on the unpaved road past the town with an amazing view of Fitz Roy peaks.

On the way out of El Chalten make sure you top off your gas tank. There is only one gas station in El Chalten, at the entrance of the town and you may have to wait in line for a while to fill up. We waited for an hour on New Year’s Eve as they were closed on New Year’s Day and so was every other gas station on our path.

The main objective of the day today is to get as close as possible to Chile Chico in Chile or even cross the border. We were deceived by Google showing that it would take 12 hours to get to Perito Moreno town (not the glacier). With that in mind, we decided to spend the night in Perito Moreno. We made it there in less than 8 hours. If we were to do it again, we would go from El Chalten straight to Chile Chico (in Chile) and spend the night there.

The drive is pretty boring, you are mostly driving through the desert with only seeing guanacos for miles at a time. Some sections of Ruta 40 are unpaved and we did take the Ruta 29 shortcut which is also unpaved, it saves over an hour on the drive.

Patagonia Itinerary

We did this drive on New Year’s Day, the gas stations in El Chalten and Tres Lagos were both closed. We lucked out with Bajo Caracoles gas station being open. It was nerve-wracking driving not knowing how far we would be able to make it.

When we made it to Perito Moreno our hotel was the only thing open in town and a couple of convenience stores. No restaurants, and no grocery stores. We literally found one convenience store open with the last 2 rolls of bread, cheese and salami, that was our New Year’s Day dinner. Note to self, do not travel on holidays in South America.

Drive from Perito Moreno to Chile Chico is less than an hour, but the border crossing may take just as long. Since you are arriving back in Chile, you will have to take all your luggage out, get it scanned and have your car inspected this can take a while.

PRO TIP: If you are carrying a gas canister with you, you are allowed to cross the border with it. We were not sure if this would be a problem and it was not. I would also suggest topping it off in Argentina. Gas is cheaper in Argentina than in Chile.

Once past Chile Chico, road 265, which takes you to Puerto Guadal, is unpaved but in fairly good condition and the views are just stunning. You will be driving next to Lago General Carrera/Bueno Aires with mountain views of National Park Laguna San Rafael and snow-capped peaks all over.

Patagonia Itinerary

For the next few days, we suggest staying in Puerto Guadal and exploring from there. It is a great centralized location to see Marble Caves and explore Patagonia National Park.

Before checking into our accommodation, we continued on to Puerto Rio Tranquilo to take a boat ride to see Marble Caves. Marble Caves are the main reason we came to this part of Patagonia. A few years back I saw pictures of them and have always wanted to see them but getting there has not been an easy task.

There are many boat tours from Puerto Rio Tranquilo that operate this tour however one local suggested that we go to Puerto Marmol, Bahia Mansa, and use a less-known operator from there.

Unless you have a 4×4 vehicle I would not suggest going here. You have to drive down the steep Puerto Marmol dirt road with massive ruts. However, if you do have a 4×4 vehicle it was a great experience to do this from Bahia Mansa.

We were the only ones on the tour with Jony, the owner of the operation who did not speak English, and a young guide. Boy, we wish our Spanish was much better, as Jony looked like he would be an interesting guy to talk to. The place is very secluded where goats, dogs, and cats are roaming around.

You have an option of taking a boat or kayak tour. The boat tour is about an hour and the kayaking tour is much longer. Most people suggest a kayaking tour as you get more time on your own, but since we were the only ones on the boat, we picked a boat tour.

Aysen Regions in Patagonia

On the tour, you will visit Marble Caves, Marble Cathedral, and Marble Chapel and yes, it is just as beautiful and colorful as the pictures suggest. I was so worried that we would be disappointed, as I was not flexible on skipping the Marble Caves, which caused a lot of extra driving and logistical issues, but we were not!

We stayed at El Arrayan Lodge & Restaurant and all our meals were included.

Patagonia National Park is the newest National Park in Chile, and because it is off the beaten path it was the least crowded hike we did our entire time in Patagonia. It was just us, Guanacos, and a couple of other dedicated hikers.

From Puerto Guadal you will have to get on Carretera Austral and drive south next to Rio Baker for a little over an hour, don’t miss a viewpoint for Rio Baker or a short hike to Confluencia Rio Baker/Neff where two rivers come together. Off Carretera Austral look for road X-83, which takes you into the park. A more common place to stay if visiting the National Park is Cochrane.

TIP: Road X-83 is another option for crossing the border from Argentina.

In Patagonia National Park, we did a Lagunas Altas hike as a loop. It is a 19 km hike and then you have to take a road between the two trailheads back which adds another 2.5 km (13.3 miles total). It was a hard hike. The terrain was completely different from anything else in Patagonia.

Patagonia Itinerary

Patagonia National Park is full of rolling hills and pastures, much greener than other areas. No rugged, wind-shaped peaks, the climb is gradual. At the top, you will walk around many different lagunas and then descend.

This hike can be done clockwise or counterclockwise. We did it clockwise, to avoid the steeper climb from the other direction but coming down was brutal on the knees.

The hike to Laguna Cerro Castillo was one of the other hikes we had on our list.

The drive from Puerto Guadal to Villa Cerro Castillo is over 3.5 hours long with good conditions. But driving in Patagonia is never a sure thing and delays should always be expected. I would suggest starting the drive very early in the morning.

The day hike to the laguna closes at noon, so you need to make sure you arrive before then to be able to do this hike. How to get to the trailhead is a little convoluted, check out our Ultimate Guide to Laguna Cerro Castillo Day Hike post.

Patagonia Itinerary

The hike is very similar to the Towers in Torres del Paine, or Lagunas de Lost Tress in El Chalten. A steep climb up for an amazing view of the laguna in front of the rugged almost black peaks but much less crowded.

After the hike drive to Coyhaique. From here on out the road is mostly paved!

Make sure you stop at the viewpoint Cuesta de la Diablo, where after driving up the winding road you get a beautiful view of Cerro Castillo and other snow-covered peaks in the area.

We stayed at the Domo Carpe Diem, a tiny little dome outside of town and a 4×4 is required to get to it. It had an amazing view and the host was amazing.

We had dinner at DaGus Restaurant .

Fly out of Balmaceda Airport and back to Santiago.

If you have more time I would suggest either taking a boat to San Rafael glacier or hiking on it, or from Coyhaique visiting the Hanging Glacier in Parque Nacional Queulat.

The Best Patagonia Itinerary: 7 to 10 Days in Patagonia [Or More]

Patagonia is a fascinating place. With its wild weather, beautiful hiking trails, and picturesque glaciers, it’s an adventure playground.

I loved every minute of my trip to the region. But before I arrived, I had hundreds of questions (which you probably do too)!

“How many days in Patagonia?”

“Which is better: Chile or Argentina Patagonia”

“Can I visit Patagonia without a tour?”

Now that I’ve been there and spent over a month exploring the Chilean and Argentinian side, I’ve crafted this perfect 10 day itinerary for Patagonia.

It’s easily customizable to a 7 day itinerary but also includes other places to visit if you have 2 weeks in Patagonia.

10 Day Patagonia itinerary overview

  • Day 1-3: El Chalten (2 nights)
  • Day 4-5: El Calafate (2 nights)
  • Day 6-10: Torres Del Paine (5 nights)

My Patagonia highlights

My overall favorite place in Patagonia: It’s an easy one! I loved the charming town of El Chalten in Argentinan Patagonia.

Most beautiful place: I still can’t get over how stunning Perito Moreno Glacier is! I did this Mini Trekking glacier tour from El Calafate, and it was one of my Patagonia highlights.

Best multi-day hike in Patagonia: The W Trek in Torres Del Paine, Chile. This hike allowed me to experience the real Patagonia. I had all four seasons in one day and saw landscapes I never knew existed.

Patagonia trip itinerary

Day 1: Buenos Aires to El Chalten: Hike to Mirador Condores

Surrounded by snow-capped peaks, El Chalten is a small hiking town home to some of the best trails, which I’ve detailed in my El Chalten hiking guide.

It’s my favorite place in all of Patagonia. And if there’s one destination you cannot miss, it’s El Chalten.

If you’re coming from Buenos Aires, you’ll be traveling for most of the day. When you arrive in El Chalten, drop off your bags and put on your hiking shoes!

Mirador de los Condores is a quick and easy hike that’s perfect for day 1 of your Patagonia itinerary. It offers the best views of El Chalten and takes roughly 2 hours to complete.

Top tip: The sun sets after 9 pm in Patagonia during the summer, so you’ll have more than enough time for this hike, so long as you arrive before 6 pm.

How to get to El Chalten

There is no airport in El Chalten. The closest airport is in El Calafate, which services flights from Buenos Aires, Bariloche, and Mendoza in Argentina.

You’ll then need to take a 3.5-hour bus from El Calafate to El Chalten. I booked my bus through Bus Bud . You can check prices and availability here .

Best things to do in Patagonia

Where to stay in El Chalten

Patagonia is generally a lot more expensive than the other destinations in Argentina.

If you leave it too late, the more affordable options will be taken, and you’ll have to settle for something a bit further from town or out of your budget.

Apart Guillaumet is a basic accommodation option that ticks all the boxes, including an affordable price.

If you’re looking for something more luxurious, you can’t go wrong with Chalten Suites Hotel . There’s an onsite restaurant, and it’s just a stone’s throw away from the trails.

Day 2: Laguna de Los Tres hike (El Chalten)

Laguna De Los Tres is the crown jewel of El Chalten. It’s a turquoise blue lake at the base of the famous Fitz Roy mountain and offers picture-perfect views.

It’s a challenging 9-hour return hike to get from El Chalten to Laguna de los Tres. You’ll need to be prepared with food, water, and a lot of energy.

It was the hardest day hike I did in Patagonia (but so worth it).

You don’t need a guide for this hike or any others in El Chalten, as the routes are easy to follow and clearly marked. Read my guide on getting to Laguna de Los Tres for more details.

Argentina or Chile Patagonia

Day 3: Laguna Torre (El Chalten)

Laguna Torre is a vast glacier lake filled with small icebergs. The Cerro Torre Mountain range forms the backdrop and looks like something from a postcard.

The Laguna Torre hike is equally impressive as Laguna de los Tres. The difference? It’s a lot easier! It takes around 6 hours to complete, but most is a flat trail.

Try to start your hike before sunrise to beat the crowds. This will also ensure you’re back in El Chalten by lunchtime.

After the hike, hop on a bus back to El Calafate and spend the night here. It’s time to check out the most incredible glacier in the world!

Other things to do in El Chalten

If one hike in El Chalten is enough for you, or if you have more than 7 days in Patagonia, here are a few other amazing things to do around El Chalten.

White river rafting: I went river rafting in El Chalten and loved it. The rapids aren’t too intense, but they offer a nice break from all the hiking.

Rent a car and make a day trip to Lago del Desierto: Lago del Desierto is a beautiful lake surrounded by forests with picturesque mountain views. Check out Glacier Huemul on the way.

Best day hikes in Patagonia

Day 4: Perito Moreno Glacier (El Calafate)

Today, you’ll wake up in El Calafate and make an exciting day trip to one of the most incredible sights I’ve ever seen, Perito Moreno Glacier.

It’s an iconic Patagonia attraction, and its beauty completely blew me away.

Perito Moreno Glacier is located in Los Glaciares National Park, about an hour’s drive west of El Calafate. There are a few ways to experience the glacier.

How to visit Perito Moreno Glacier

Perito Moreno walkways: If you’re on a budget, you can book a bus to the park and visit the walkways only. These comprise of 4 km of interconnected paths that offer panoramic views of the glacier.

Glacier trekking tour: I did this Minitrekking tour , which was well worth the money. Not only do you get to walk on the actual glacier, but it also includes a short boat trip. You’ll have some time to explore the walkways.

Ferry around Perito Moreno: The Minitrekking tour sells out fast, so a good backup option is this boat cruise , which allows you to get closer to the glacier.

Regardless of what tour you do, visiting Perito Moreno Glacier will be expensive! But it’s worth every cent.

Book your spot here , as there is limited availability.

Where to stay in El Calafate

El Calafate is a bigger town than El Chalten, so your accommodation options are greater. It also means that some are closer to the main road than others.

I stayed at Folk Hostel , and it’s a great choice for backpackers. It’s close to the bus terminal, but you’re going to have to walk a bit further to get to the main town center.

Mirador del Lago Hotel has gorgeous large rooms with beautiful views. The breakfasts are exceptional, and it’s perfect for those looking for a more comfortable and luxurious stay.

Day 5 Patagonia itinerary: Puerto Natales

For the second half of your itinerary for Patagonia, there are a few places to visit.

I recommend crossing the border and checking out the Chilean side. You can then fly out of Santiago in Chile rather than crossing the border back into Argentina.

But depending on your time and interests, you may want to visit Bariloche or Ushuaia on the Argentinian side instead.

Where would I go? It’s an easy one! Torres Del Paine National Park in Chilean Patagonia. This park is home to the famous O and W Treks.

Itinerary for Patagonia

How to get from El Calafate (Argentina) to Puerto Natales (Chile)

Puerto Natales is the gateway to Chilean Patagonia.

Getting here involves an easy border crossing, which you’ll need to do via a bus from El Calafate in Argentina to Puerto Natales in Chile.

The bus drive takes 5 hours but allow for an extra hour at immigration. The buses are extremely comfortable, with large reclining seats. Check prices and availability here.

However, the town of Puerto Natales isn’t as charming as some other towns in Patagonia. So rather spend your first night in Puerto Natales and the rest in the national park.

Where to stay in Puerto Natales

I stayed at El Patagonico Hostel , a fantastic hostel in the heart of Puerto Natales. They offer private and dorm rooms and a big kitchen and lounge area. The price is hard to beat, and they’ll store your bags for free while you do the W Trek.

If you’re looking for a hotel with lake views, you can’t go wrong with The Singular Patagonia Hotel . The elegant rooms are some of the best you’ll find in Puerto Natales, and the staff are outstanding.

Day 6 – 10: W Trek (Torres Del Paine)

The W Trek is a 4-night/5-day trek through Torres Del Paine. It’s not as challenging as you think and can be done independently.

But the notorious Patagonia weather will affect your experience. During my W Trek (which you can read about here ), I experienced the most intense weather conditions.

Sunshine, rain, snow!

I was blown over numerous times while walking through French Valley and had to get down on my haunches to catch my breath. It rained heavily one day. The next, it was sunny and hot.

But despite not having perfect conditions and spectacular views throughout, braving this weather was one of my highlights. I got to experience Patagonia at its finest – the raw and harsh conditions were unlike anything I’d experienced before.

Patagonia travel guide

Accommodation on W Trek

If you’re doing the W Trek without a guide, you’ll need to organize your own accommodation. You can choose mountain huts or campsites, but the prices differ substantially.

Bookings open in July every year, and it’s a scramble to get a spot.

Two companies manage the accommodation along the W Trek: Vertice and Fantastico Sur (also known as Las Torres).

Booking your accommodation for the W Trek is a serious mission and highly time-consuming. But it’s the only downside of doing the W Trek independently.

Alternative option: Day trips to Torres Del Paine

Because of limited availability at campsites, your timing, or simply the fact that multi-day hikes are not everyone’s cup of tea, you can also visit Torres Del Paine on day trips from Puerto Natales.

If you’re choosing this option, it’s best to hire a car or take a day tour like this one .

Here are some day trip options:

how many days in Patagonia

1. Mirador Las Torres (The Towers)

Mirador las Torres is an iconic site in Torres Del Paine. It’s the most popular section of the W Trek and gets busy with day trippers.

Getting to The Towers is a 9-hour return hike that starts challenging and does not get easier. The views are magnificent, though.

This is one of the best day tours from Puerto Natales to The Towers. Check price and availability here.

Top tip: If you’re following my Patagonia 10 day itinerary and struggled with the hike to Laguna de los Tres in El Chalten, skip Mirador Las Torres and opt for one of the below day hikes in Torres Del Paine instead.

2. French Valley

French Valley is the most picturesque day hike in Torres Del Paine National Park.

You’ll need to get on the first bus from Puerto Natales to the park and take the ferry to Refugio Paine Grande. From there, it’s a 2.5-hour hike to Refugio Italiano, which sits at the heart of French Valley.

3. Glacier Grey

Glacier Grey is the biggest glacier in Torres Del Paine and forms part of the western section of the W Trek.

You’ll need to catch the same catamaran as you would if you’re doing the French Valley day hike. But instead of following the trail that leads to French Valley on the right, you’ll go north to Refugio Grey.

Visiting Grey Glacier on a day trip is an ambitious yet achievable goal if you’re a fast hiker. It’s best to rather spend the night at Refugio Grey and head back to town the next day.

Top tip: If you’re planning a 7 day Patagonia itinerary and can only do 2 day hikes in Torres Del Paine, I suggest doing French Valley and Mirador Las Torres (The Towers).

Other places to visit in Patagonia

Some travelers may want to avoid the border crossing from Argentina to Chile.

If this is the case for you, there’s the option to stay on the Argentinian side and explore more of Patagonia from there.

Bariloche is the lake district of Argentinian Patagonia. It’s strikingly different from all other places on this Patagonia trip itinerary.

Bariloche is ideal for travelers who want a break from hiking and prefer a mix of nature and comfort.

It’s best to spend 3 days in Bariloche and possibly even a night in San Martin de los Andes.

Day 1 in Bariloche

Try to arrive in Bariloche by lunchtime, so you have the afternoon to explore the town. The streets are lined with alpine-styled buildings, and the Centro Civico (the town square) is incredibly picturesque.

The Bariloche lakefront is a great place to hang out. It overlooks Nahuel Huapi Lake and is calming and serene.

A beautiful walking path leads from the Bariloche sign along the water’s edge. It passes a skate park and other sites, leading to an iconic Cathedral.

Bariloche vs El Chalten Patagonia

How to get to Bariloche

If you’re skipping the Chilean Patagonia side, or if you have more time in Patagonia and want to add Bariloche to your itinerary, you’ll need to get to Bariloche from El Calafate.

The easiest way is via a quick 2 hour flight between the towns.

Where to stay in Bariloche

Bariloche is a lot bigger than most Patagonia towns. There are many different areas to base yourself in. Unless you stay in the town center, you’ll need to use public buses or rent a car to get around.

I stayed at Trip Select Bariloche , just a short walk from the main road in Bariloche. The private rooms are simple yet comfortable and are great value for money.

Llao Llao Resort is one of the most luxurious places to stay in Bariloche. The location is everything, surrounded by mountain peaks with incredible views from every window. But you’ll need a car to get here.

Deciding where to stay can be overwhelming, so here’s my comprehensive guide to the best areas and accommodations in Bariloche.

Day 2 in Bariloche: Llao Llao National Park & Cerro Campanario

Llao llao national park.

An hour west of Bariloche lies Parque Municipal Llao Llao. It’s home to gorgeous hiking trails and spectacular views.

The most popular trail leads to Cerro Llao Llao, a panoramic viewpoint. You’ll walk up a steep zig-zag trail for 30 minutes to get here.

You can combine this with the Sendero de los Arrayanes trail. This loop track meanders through Parque Municipal Llao Llao, passing lush walkways and the picturesque Lake Moreno. It’s a flat trail and an excellent option for kids.

A man sitting on a bench overlooking a lake at one of the most beautiful places in Patagonia

Cerro Campanario

After visiting Llao Llao National Park, make your way to Cerro Campanario. Here, you’ll find the most impressive viewpoint in Bariloche.

The best part? There’s no strenuous hike involved (unless you opt to walk instead of taking the chair lift to the top).

There are numerous viewpoints at the peak, and you’ll have 360-degree views overlooking the lake district. There’s also a small cafe and bar.

Day 8 in Bariloche: 7 Lakes drive or Refugio Frey hike

For the final day of your itinerary for Patagonia, you have two options. You can either explore the iconic 7 Lakes route or do the popular full-day hike to Refugio Frey.

7 Lakes Drive

The 7 Lakes route is one of the most scenic drives in all of Patagonia.

It starts in a lake-side town outside Bariloche called Villa la Angostura and goes north to San Martin de Los Andes.

Throughout the 7 Lakes Drive, you’ll pass seven stunning glacial lakes, dense forests, and picturesque mountain landscapes.

If you have the time, spend a night in San Martin de Los Andes. It will break up the long drive and is a quaint town to explore.

But if you only have a few days in Bariloche, you’ll need to squeeze this into one day, although two days are preferable.

This full-day tour from Bariloche stops at all the lakes. It’s an excellent option for solo travelers or those who would prefer not to rent a car.

Bariloche Patagonia

Hike to Refugio Frey

I highly recommend the Refugio Frey trek if you’d rather spend your day hiking around Bariloche as opposed to enjoying the views from a car.

It starts at Cerro Cathedral, which is Argentina’s largest ski resort. The trail ends at Refugio Frey, which sits in front of Laguna Toncek and is surrounded by craggy peaks.

The 22 km return hike takes 8 hours and is more challenging than the other hikes around Bariloche.

Best time to visit Patagonia

The best time to visit Patagonia is from October to April. The days are warmer and longer, providing ideal conditions for hiking and exploring.

Keep in mind that October and November will still be cold, and the glacier lakes may be iced up.

December through February are the best months to visit. But they’re also the busiest.

For less crowds and great weather, March is the ideal month to plan your Patagonia travel itinerary.

best time to visit Patagonia

How many days should I spend in Patagonia?

You’ll need at least 7 days in Patagonia. But if you want to travel slower and visit all the attractions, you’ll need 2 weeks.

Which is better: Chilean or Argentina Patagonia

I loved Argentinian Patagonia! It’s home to my favorite places in Patagonia and has incredible hiking trails. It’s also a lot cheaper than the Chilean side.

Which is the best month to visit Patagonia?

If I could choose any month, it would be March. This is the end of high season, so the crowds are fewer. But the weather is still optimal, and you can expect long, sunny days.

Where do you fly into for Patagonia?

You can either fly into Buenos Aires in Argentina or Santiago in Chile. To get to the Patagonia region from there, you must fly to El Calafate or Bariloche in Argentina. Or Puerto Natales in Chile.

How to visit Patagonia

Final thoughts on my itinerary for Patagonia

I spent 7 months backpacking South America, and some of my best memories are from Patagonia.

But remember one thing about the region.

You can do all the planning and preparation for your trip, but unfortunately, you can’t prepare for the weather. It can be unforgiving, even during the summer months, which are said to be the best times to visit.

But no matter what Patagonia brings, embrace it. Enjoy the stunning scenery and take in the power of Mother Nature.

You can take direct flights to Patagonia Argentina from Buenos Aires or to Chilean Patagonia from Santiago de Chile. There are also international flights and ground transportation to travel between Argentinean and Chilean Patagonia.

The best time is from October to April (our summer). The weather is more pleasant for outdoor activities. However, Patagonia has a variety of activities available all year round!

From north to south, the highlights are Bariloche, the capital of the Lake District, Península Valdés, the most important wildlife reserve of Argentine Patagonia where whales come every year to breed their calves, El Calafate, where people go to visit the famous Perito Moreno Glacier, El Chaltén, the Argentine capital of trekking and, finally, Ushuaia, best known as the city “at the end of the world”.

Regardless of when you travel, bring warm clothes! Even if you travel during the Argentine summer and are blessed with a beautiful, warm day of sunshine, the winds can come out of nowhere and virtually blow you away in no time. So make sure you wear windproof/north-facing jackets, a hat, gloves, long pants, and scarves. Basically, warm clothes.

Yes, it is important to have the right clothes to enjoy Patagonian nature. The weather can vary a lot on the same day and you can have the four seasons in 24 hours!

The best is to dress in layers, the weather changes a lot and it can be sunny and warm like a summer day, or it can rain, be windy, and even snow all on the same day! Wear shoes suitable for trekking, waterproof shoes are better. Sunscreen, sunglasses, a small backpack, and a water bottle that you can recharge.

What To Do in Patagonia?

When you hear the word “Patagonia” you think of a vast, virgin, and distant territory in the southern tip of South America. Shared by two countries, Chile and Argentina , Patagonia offers beautiful and spectacular landscapes. Although this region shares its name between these two countries, the landscapes are completely different.

Patagonia hosts stunning glaciers, and incredibly diverse wildlife, especially in Península Valdés.  The Perito Moreno Glacier , the penguins of Ushuaia, and the most reputed hiking trails of El Chaltén add to the highlights Patagonia charms travelers.

Chile on the other hand is known by the fjords who many have sailed. From Puerto Montt to the archipelagos of Chiloe, Chonos and Aysen, and the mythical city of Castro, Chilean Patagonia offers different landscapes from Argentina.

However, there is one place in Chilean Patagonia that overshadows any other destination,  Chile’s most famous national park, Torres del Paine.  With its three majestic pink and white granite towers guard, the park welcomes hundreds of hikers every day during summer.

To sum up, weather permitting, Patagonia is an all-in-one destination that offers something for everyone! You can choose between active trips, hiking journeys, or even family vacations to discover the best of Patagonia.

Best destinations to combine in patagonia.

Patagonia features different regions and natural attractions. It is divided into the lake district, the coastline of Península Valdés where most of the Patagonian wildlife can be found, and the southernmost Patagonia which comprises Ushuaia, El Calafate, and Torres del Paine National Park.

El Calafate, Argentina

Known as “the capital of glaciers”, El Calafate, is one of the most popular destinations in Patagonia. It was named after a typical blueberry that grows in the area (the legend says whoever eats a Calafate blueberry will always return to the city).

It features the best of Patagonia in Argentina , giant glaciers, icy lakes, remote estancias, and no shortage of breathtaking views accompanying outdoor excursions such as trekking, kayaking, and horse riding. This is a small city, really easy to get around on foot, with beautiful views of Argentino Lake.

The nearest airport has good flight frequency, this is the easiest way to reach El Calafate. The city and its glaciers (around 47 in the park) were discovered at the end of the XIX century.

Today, El Calafate offers the famous Perito Moreno Glacier boat trips in Argentino Lake, day tours to Patagonia ranches to learn about the rural culture, visits to El Chaltén and Mount Fitz Roy to enjoy amazing views and adventure hikes and other activities.

El Chaltén, Argentina

Founded in 1985, El Chaltén is a little mountaineering village located inside the Glaciers National Park (UNESCO World Heritage Site) in Argentine Patagonia. For many years this secluded place remains the unexplored spot for intrepid travelers.

Today, though it manages to preserve its little-town ambiance, El Chaltén is visited by many people every year who enjoy hikes of different lengths and difficulty levels. Is in this isolated corner of Patagonia where the famous Mount Fitz Roy can be admired.

Mount Chaltén is another highlight near the village which was named after this colossal and sacred mountain for the Tehuelches, the natives of the region. Its summit, frequently covered by clouds, was called by the Tehuelches “Chaltén” which means “smoking mountain” in their language.

In 2015, Chaltén was declared “National Capital of Trekking”, but travelers can also enjoy other adventure activities like kayaking, horseback riding, and sailing.

Puerto Madryn, Argentina

Puerto Madryn was founded in 1865 by a 150 group of Welsh that established on the area in 1886. Welsh, Spanish and Italian immigrants worked together to build the railway that would connect Puerto Madryn to the city of Trelew. Is in Trelew where today the nearest airport is located.

Nowadays, the railway it’s no longer used, and many travelers fly to Trelew and stay in Puerto Madryn to visit the incredible natural reserve of Península Valdés, the most important wildlife hub of Patagonia .

The Southern Right Whale arrives at the coast of the Península (but can also be seen from the very coastline of Puerto Madryn!) once a year, between June and December. On the other hand, from October to April, large colonies of Magellan Penguins can be seen too, making this coastal region a favorite among both wildlife enthusiasts and those in search of a truly once-in-a-lifetime Argentine experience.

Bariloche, Argentina

San Carlos de Bariloche locates in the Argentine province of Río Negro at the shore of the Nahuel Huapi Lake. In 1903, Francisco Moreno, an intrepid explorer, and scientist donated these lands to create the Nahuel Huapi National Park, the first in Argentina, and thus, Bariloche started to flourish.

Few people know that the city is entirely located inside the park, famous today for its stunning lakes and mountains . Plus, Bariloche neighbors the Andes Mountain Range and features some spectacular mountains to be climbed like the Tronador, actually, a non-active volcano.

Therefore, Bariloche is nowadays one of the most populated cities in Patagonia. It is the tourist hub for hiking or skiing, but also to taste the best artisanal chocolate and craft beer .

In addition, the city is one of the most essential scientific poles in America. Students come to Balseiro Atomic Center and Institute to follow Physics and Nuclear Engineering studies.

Ushuaia, Argentina

Ushuaia is the capital of the Argentine province of Tierra del Fuego, best known as “the destination at the end of the world”. It is the southernmost tip of land in Argentina and a favorite destination for adventure traveling.

To clarify, actually Tierra de Fuego is an island, separated from the American continent by the Strait of Magellan. From Ushuaia, you can sail through the legendary Beagle Channel too, and visit Les Eclereurs lighthouse.

This is a popular outing because on the way travelers can spot islands covered by sea lions and cormorants. Moreover, you can hike in go kayaking in Tierra del Fuego National Park to enjoy a close encounter with the particular vegetation and wildlife of the region.

Torres del Paine, Chile

Torres del Paine National Park, created in 1959, is one of the most visited destinations in Chilean Patagonia. Its first inhabitants were the Tehuelches, a native community of skilled hunters.

With its 227,298 hectares, extended hiking trails, glaciers, lakes, and stunning mountains, the park hosts thousands of travelers each year. In 1978, the park was declared as a biosphere reserve by UNESCO , and the 8th wonder of the world in 2013 .

The “Torres del Paine” name refers to the three distinctive granite peaks of the Paine Mountain Range that soar more than 6,500 feet (nearly 2,000 meters) into the sky. The park welcomes more than 250,000 visitors every year and the 5-day “W” trek is the most famous hiking circuit inside the reserve.

Puerto Varas, Chile

Known as the ‘City of the Roses’, Puerto Varas locates is in the Lake District in southern Chile. It is located on the southwestern shore of the extensive Lake Llanquihue, which offers breathtaking views of the snow-capped and still active Calbuco and Osorno volcanoes.

Traditional German-style architecture characterizes the city. Puerto Varas is a great choice for open-air adventures, excellent kayaking and angling are among the many activities this city offers. Renting a bike in Puerto Varas and riding to the beautiful Petrohué waterfalls while enjoying the many lakeside beaches on the way is one of the unique experiences we recommend.

Puerto Natales, Chile

Puerto Natales is the nearest city to Torres del Paine National Park and features a nearby airport. Some of the highlights of Puerto Natales are the Milodón Cave, an archaeological visit that will make you travel 10,000 years into the past. The Southern Patagonian Ice Field and the Ultima Esperanza fjord. In Puerto Natales, you can navigate to see the largest glaciers in Patagonia!

What Kind of People Patagonia Tours Suit Best?

For animal lovers.

Besides the great landscapes, another best thing about Patagonia it’s the native wildlife. On the Chilean side, the national park Torres del Paine is home to deer, foxes, swans , and solitary but still dangerous pumas that can be found chasing one of the funny-looking “cousins” of the llamas: the guanacos. Also, if you pay enough attention, you might see the Andean condor , known for being the largest bird on the continent.

Meanwhile, don’t think that the unstable weather and freezing temperatures of the end of the world have made it impossible for animals to survive: guanacos, rabbits, and aggressive beavers are all over Tierra del Fuego. The province is also one of the many penguin colonies of the region and if you jump on a boat, you may also get to see some Humpback whales.

For athletic

Those who can’t stay still for a long time and enjoy playing sports even during their vacations can find great opportunities for enjoying adventure tours in Patagonia. Kayaking through the amazing fjords, rivers, and lagoons of the Lake District, skiing at the end of the world or the breathtaking Chilean volcanoes, horseback riding on the Patagonian steppe, climbing, mountain biking, rafting … the possibilities are endless.

For not that sporty but enjoy beautiful sites

The region is also perfect for calm visitors who enjoy watching and listening to nature for hours without having to undergo a great physical effort. Besides, one of the most amazing points of Patagonia is standing still, waiting for you, and being approachable by boat.

Yes, we are talking about Perito Moreno Glacier . Just watching the five kilometers of width and 60 meters over sea level that features this breathtaking ice mass is a once-in-a-lifetime experience impossible to forget.

The region is also perfect to take cruises that cross the fjords and glaciers of both countries. Another interesting option is to grab a car in Chile and jump on the Austral road that ends in the idyllic Lake O’Higgins after getting the most out of the beautiful region of Aysen.

Meanwhile, on the Argentine side, one of the best drives is through the Lake District, where the stunning setting will make it impossible to resist not jumping out of the car a thousand times…

If you’re a cold-sensitive person

For those who are sensitive to cold, looking at the weather forecast can make them want to draw back from their adventure in Patagonia. It’s a huge mistake. It’s true that even if you arrive during the summer months (December-March), the temperatures will still be low and you’ll have to face fierce winds, but it’s worth it because it’s thanks to this unstable and harsh weather that this corner of the world has breathtaking scenery to offer.

Besides, there are plenty of places to take shelter and interesting indoor activities , like the Paleontology museum in the city of Trelew, where the dinosaurs will help you warm up. Still, you MUST stay outside as long as you can. Put on your best winter clothes, and don’t forget to cover your feet, hands, and head. We guarantee you: it’ll be worth it.

I wanted to express our gratitude for your exceptional assistance in planning our recent trip to Argentina and Chile. The experience exceeded all expectations, and we are incredibly thankful for your recommendations that played a significant role in creating lasting memories for our family.

Here are some highlights from our trip that we wanted to share: Glacial trek, Aldebaran Hotel - a unanimous favorite for its post-trek relaxation and rejuvenating massages, El Chalten hikes and the New Year's Eve dinner

We had an incredible journey, and your contributions made it truly special.

Thank you once again for your excellent planning and support. We look forward to working with you in the future.

Best regards

My brother and I had a fantastic time in Patagonia and are so grateful for everything you did to make this such an amazing trip!! The itinerary you put together for us was perfect and we especially enjoyed the Laguna de los tres hike and big ice trek on the Perito Moreno glacier. Thank you so much for squeezing us into all the activities and accommodations. We are already looking forward to coming back and I've attached a few pictures of us :).

The trip was absolutely fantastic. We had such a great time! The guides were all knowledgeable and enthusiastic and a lot of fun to spend the days with. I want to give personal recognition to the tours/groups in Buenos Aires, El Calafate, Puerto Madryn, Peninsula Valdes, and the jeep tour on day 1 of Rio de Janeiro. Thank you for your hard work and support for setting up this trip. The Vamos app is also fantastic and really helped throughout the trip!

I hope to keep in touch for any future trips!

Gracias y saludos a todos!

The most remarkable aspect of the expedition was, undoubtedly, the breathtaking wildlife. The landscapes were a sanctuary to an array of unique creatures. Majestic whales gracefully breached the icy waters, while adorable penguins waddled along the shores, seemingly unfazed by our presence. Observing these creatures in their natural habitat was an experience that words cannot fully capture. It's a memory that will forever be etched in my mind.

The opportunity to step foot on the untouched Antarctica was a privilege. The glaciers, the icy terrain, and the absolute stillness were both humbling and invigorating. Exploring via zodiac boats allowed us to get up close to the landscape and wildlife, providing an intimate experience of this raw, unspoiled wilderness. Thanks to every member of the crew that made this adventure an unforgettable experience!

We enjoyed our trip very much

Sayhueque did an amazing job from start to finish.

You guys helped me provide my husband with a truly unforgettable experience for his 50th birthday, and I can’t say thank you enough.

The trip was really great, everything went smoothly and I had a great time! The organisation was great and I have nothing to really complain about.

I would rate this trip 9.5/10 and definitely recommend it to others if they wanted to go to Patagonia. The activities that you chose were very good and the organisation was great. Also because of the 24/7 emergency contact that responded very quickly. Felipe, our travel advisor was great help!

Thanks for everything

Our trip was fantastic - you and the team did a great job pulling together with very little notice. We will gladly use your company again and refer you to others. It turns out, a friend of ours used your company in 2021 (we found out afterward) and was also very happy.

Everything went according to plan perfectly. We were happy with all the accommodations, all were very clean; the guides & drivers were all wonderful, very nice & helpful on private tours; good on shared tours. Driver Franciso from P. Arenas airport to Torres Del Paine was great; made the trip interesting, had fun with Spanish/English - saw lots of wildlife, and made a few picture stops.. a fun journey.

Good job... we'll be back!

We had an incredible experience.

The only hiccup we had were the flights being overbooked and having to spend more time than needed at the airport. Overall, we loved all the excursions. We would 100% recommend Say Hueque.

- At Iguazu, we enjoyed having the private guided tour to learn more about the falls and Rodrigo was great. It would have been nice to have an extra hour or so at the end to walk around ourselves and revisit some of the falls- they were so beautiful and could have spent the whole day there watching them!

- For the hike at Torres del Paine, the guides were fantastic. We are just faster hikers and don’t typically hike in a group. I think for that excursion, having the option to take the bus there and do a hike on our own and bus back would have been nice.

- The museum was closed in Ushuaia for the penguin rookery tour. Would recommend scheduling that tour on the days the museum is open if possible. Either way, seeing those penguins so close was so much fun! They’re so cute!

- Wish we could have been there one extra day to watch Argentina win the World Cup while in Argentina! What a fantastic game!!!

Thanks again for all your assistance with this. We had a wonderful time and hopefully one day we can go back (we really want to combine the O and the W for a backpacking trip in Torres del Paine!)

All the guides and hotels were fantastic and we wish we had more time there, we really had the best honeymoon we could have asked for!

Merry Christmas and happy New Year!

First, thank you so much for all the arrangements, the trip overall was wonderful, and we feel like we did manage to see the highlights of Southern Patagonia in the time we had available.

We were extremely pleased with all of the transfers, with only one exception, they were all on time, professional and courteous. The exception was in Ushuaia when we were waiting to be taken to the airport. We had received a message saying they would pick us up at 9:15 instead of 9:00, but when they hadn’t shown up, or we hadn’t heard from them by 9:30 we called a taxi. We were worried we might miss our flight. We did eventually hear from them, and they were apologetic, but even a message to the hotel earlier would have reassured us. As it was, we had no time to spare at the airport.

All of the tours you had arranged went as planned, again with one exception, but the error was caused by the hotel in Ushuaia, not your company or the tour company. We expected to go to the tour company’s office for the start of the tour, hike to Emerald Lake, but Altos Ushuaia gave us a message saying we would be picked up at the hotel. After waiting, texting, and two taxi rides we finally caught up with the shared tour, and felt badly about the inconvenience we caused to the other two people. It all worked out in the end, but it left us with a bad feeling about the hotel.

The only other tour I would say anything negative about was the day trip to Torres del Paine from El Calafate. While the scenery was absolutely beautiful, and we are glad we were able to see it, I wouldn’t recommend that tour. It took 16 hours: we were picked up at 6:30 and returned at 10:30pm. The red tape involved in the border crossings took up about three hours, and then again at the National Park headquarters. We knew the entrance fee was not included, and we were ready to pay, but even though they ask for the fee in US $, they will not accept cash, and our credit card was rejected, along with several of the others on the bus. In the end the tour guide paid for several of us with her credit card and we gave her the cash, but all that took more than an hour. The total amount of time we were allowed in the park was only about 2- 2 1/2 hours, which doesn’t justify the long, uncomfortable trip to get there and back.

Several of the tours were just spectacular, and we give very positive recommendations to the tour companies and the guides.

The hotels that were chosen for us were all comfortable and we enjoyed our stays. My only comment would be about Altos Ushuaia, which is very remote, and has a restaurant which is not open after breakfast until dinner at 7pm. It required taxi rides, which is fine, but a more centrally located hotel would have been more convenient.

Overall, we loved it, and have created some very special memories. I would not hesitate to recommend your company for anyone looking for a similar package!

Patagonia tours: infinite and remote

On the southern frontier of South America lies one of the most rugged and pristine environments of the world: Patagonia. Despite the fact it has been the playground for die-hard adventurers for decades,  tourism has made it possible to explore this extensive part of the world in comfort as well, making it possible for every traveler to put Patagonia on the to-visit list. The region is shared between Argentina and Chile, and it covers a vast territory that starts at the edge of La Pampa in the northern Argentinean side (Palena’s province in Chile) and finishes in Cape Horn (the last tip of land before Antarctica, right below Tierra del Fuego). This is over 2800 km long.  On the east, the Atlantic, and on the west, the Pacific Ocean.

Tours in Ushuaia, Punta Arenas, Tierra del Fuego & Patagonia Cruises

This is the Southernmost tip in the world, the last civilization latitude before Antarctica.   Ushuaia, easily reachable from Buenos Aires by direct flights, shows a perfect combination between the mountains & the sea: the Beagle Channel,  the National Park Tierra del Fuego, and Lakes Fagnano & Escondido, are its most popular hot spots.  Its neighbor Chilean southernmost continental city, Punta Arenas, is another strategic hub to combine with it.   From both cities depart Cruise Ships to Antarctica, Cape Horn, and the Chilean Fiords, surrounded by scarped mountains and pristine glaciers.  It´s also a good area to find ocean wildlife (Penguins, Humpback Whales, étc). If you have enough time, don´t forget to visit Puerto Williams and  Estancia Harberton.  If you’re keen on cruises, we invite you to check our section Ushuaia to Cape Horn & Patagonia Cruises .

Right on the other side of the Andes, at a similar latitude than Bariloche, we can find the Chilean Lake District.  A very green area full of lakes, mountains, rivers, sounds (Pacific Ocean), and incredible landscapes.  Some of the main attractions are Puerto Varas,  Frutillar, Puerto Octay, Osorno, Saltos de Petrohué, Peulla,  Cochamó, and Alerce Andino National Park.   If you continue to the south, you will find the epic Carretera Austral (Austral Road) and the beautiful region of Aysen.  This area is plenty of contrasts and different kinds of attractions, such as the Marble Cathedrals,  Quelat,  Caleta Gonzalo,  Cerro Castillo, Caleta Tortel, Pumalin National Park, and Villa O’Higgins. The argentinian Ruta 40 stretches foro ver 5000 km from Southern Patagonia till the limit with Bolivia, in the province of Jujuy. The Patagonian part crosses different kinds of attractions, including some of the regions mentioned above. One of the remotest areas is the one next to the Cave of Hands (rock paintings) and Posta Los Toldos refuge (wildlife), both picturesque areas in the middle of the infinite steppe. Adittionally, both Argentinian and Chilean sides of Patagonia count with other hidden pearls, such as Palena, Puerto Deseado, and other destinations. Contact a local expert

This excursion allows for an up-close view of the glacier. The boat navigates within 150 meters of the glacier.

Transfer from the hotel to Calafate bus station. Regular bus to Puerto Natales in Chile. Arrival at Puerto Natales bus station and transfer to your accommodation.

The excursion begins with a visit to the Cueva del Milodón, a remarkable cavern 200 meters long, 30 meters high and 80 meters wide located 25 km from Puerto Natales. A half-hour walk will take us into the cave, known for the discovery of fresh skin and bones from a prehistoric species of giant sloth, the mylodon. Remains of other extinct animals have also been found there, such as the dwarf horse, the bear, the panther and the saber-toothed tiger. In Cerro Castillo where we make a stop at a cafeteria and then continue towards Torres del Paine crossing numerous ranches and a landscape that goes from steppe to deciduous forest. Along the way it is possible to spot local fauna including the rhea, or South American ostrich, and the guanaco, a wild camelid. Torres del Paine is known worldwide for the massifs that give it its name, giant granite shaped by the force of glacial ice. After entering the park we discover a series of lagoons of intense colors, mountains covered with ice and abundant local fauna. Then we will stop for a 15-minute walk to the Salto Grande on the Paine River. After lunch we continue to Lake Grey, where we will take a walk to the beach from which you can see the glacier of the same name in the distance. Subsequently, the return to Puerto Natales is undertaken by the same route, or by the road that borders the Toro, Porteño and Sofía lakes.

Transfer to Punta Arenas on a Regular Bus. Arrival at Punta Arena’s airport. Flight to Puerto Montt. Arrival and transfer to the hotel in Puerto Montt or Puerto Varas.

Lake Crossing. In this experience we will make the Andean Crossing, which connects the cities of Puerto Varas in Chile and Bariloche in Argentina and in which we will enjoy views of the beautiful Todos los Santos, Frías and Nahuel Huapi Lakes, among other beautiful landscapes. Andean Crossing is an international tourist adventure in which you will sail through the Andes Mountains through three beautiful lakes, Lake Todos los Santos, Lake Frías and Lake Nahuel Huapi, which are connected by four land stretches that join the cities of Puerto Varas in Chile and Bariloche in Argentina. The route is an unforgettable experience full of magic and history where you will be able to contemplate landscapes of virgin nature where for thousands of years the glaciers left an unforgettable geographical mark. What began as a commercial route, today is one of the most demanded tourist routes in Chilean-Argentine Patagonia: 180 kilometers of route enjoyed annually by more than 30,000 travelers.

Transfer to the airport. Flight to Buenos Aires. Arrival and transfer to your accommodation.

tour patagonia 15 giorni

tour patagonia 15 giorni
