Open roads review (pc): a memorable trip into a family’s mysterious past.

The relationship between Tess and Opal is at the heart of Open Roads.

There’s little I love more in fiction than a family mystery well told, and Open Roads certainly has one of those. This engrossing tale from developer Open Roads Team and publisher Annapurna Interactive has a clear vision and executes that well without overstaying its welcome.

You play as Tess, a 16-year-old who is packing up her belongings ahead of her and mom Opal moving out of their home after a death in the family. The story is anchored in their relationship and those with other family members. Since Open Roads is so dependent on its plot, I won’t say too much more about the narrative other than to note that there’s a road trip involved.

You piece together the story as you explore each environment and pick up items, such as photos, trinkets, postcards and letters. There are clear echoes of Gone Home (that game’s designer was formerly the creative lead of Open Roads , but it’s complicated ). However, having Opal around to explain the family connection to many of the items Tess picks up means you don’t have to figure things out for yourself.

Annapurna games often feature well-known actors and Open Roads is no exception. Keri Russell ( The Americans, The Diplomat ) and Kaitlyn Dever ( No One Will Save You, The Last of Us ) star as Opal and Tess, respectively.

In One Massive Attack Ukrainian Missiles Hit Four Russian Ships Including Three Landing Vessels

New gmail security rules you have 5 days to comply google says, why raising retirement age for social security means cutting benefits.

Those supremely talented performers expertly flesh out their characters and their often-uneasy relationship. Tenderness, love and tension run through their conversations as both hold onto secrets that are bubbling just under the surface. The game wouldn’t work nearly as well without Russell and Dever rooting it with a deep sense of humanity.

Open Roads has a lovely art style with hand-drawn character animations set against 3D environments. It’s a slightly disorienting effect, and it evokes a sense of hyperrealism that actually works.

Open Roads nails the details of its early 2000s setting.

Open Roads Team has done an excellent job of rooting the game in the early 2000s. The details are spot on, from the old-school flip phone Tess uses to the music on the radio and printed MapQuest (sorry, “RoadBuddy”) directions.

My only real qualm is that the lip sync animations end after just a word or two of each line reading. It felt a little jarring, but I also completely understand that choice. Animation is expensive, especially when it’s hand-drawn.

Open Roads is a lovely way to spend 90 minutes or so. All of the elements by and large come together harmoniously in service of a story that had me hooked just enough, and the two strong central performances elevate the entire piece. I can’t ask for much more than that. Like all good road trips, though, it’s more about the journey than the destination.

Rating: 8/10

Open Roads is out March 28 on PC, Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S. It’s on Game Pass day one on cloud, console and PC.

Red Square & Moscow City Tour

Description

Highlights:.

  • Experience medieval Kitay Gorod (China town).
  • Wander picturesque Red Square and Alexander Garden.
  • Explore grand Christ the Savior Cathedral on our Red Square tour.
  • Breathtaking panoramic views from Patriarch bridge.
  • Enjoy a hearty lunch on the large open verandah and marvel at the stunning views of the Kremlin.
  • Learn about Russian culture from the local through relaxed cultural discussions.

Tour Itinerary:

Red square:.

Russia and Moscow are synonymous with Red Square and the Kremlin and that's hardly surprising as you'll find these places absolutely stunning!

  • - Walk-through the Resurrection Gate and don’t forget to flip a coin so you’ll be sure to come back one day!
  • - Visit the world's famous Kazan Cathedral .
  • - See the State Department Store (GUM), once the Upper Trading Stalls, which were built over a century ago and still operating!
  • - Admire the lovely St. Basil's Cathedral! The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....

Open Roads review: "A cozy, nostalgic road trip that can't quite get into gear"

Open Roads screenshot

GamesRadar+ Verdict

Open Roads' mother-daughter travelog about discovering long-buried family secrets is heartfelt, but this lightweight driving adventure doesn't reach the momentum of the mystery it so carefully maps out.

+Compelling mystery set-up involving long-buried family secrets and a search for the truth

Thoughtful writing and pitch-perfect voice acting make characters feel authentic and empathetic

Detailed environments and item interaction make for a more intimate story

The overall story lacks forward momentum, with the main mystery winding down just as it's getting started

Missed opportunities to delve further into the more challenging aspects of its themes

Why you can trust GamesRadar+ Our experts review games, movies and tech over countless hours, so you can choose the best for you. Find out more about our reviews policy.

The heart of any story in the road trip genre is the journey, not necessarily the arrival, or sometimes not even arriving at all. Open Roads is a driving adventure that, although reached its intended destination, never felt like it fully arrived. It has an intriguing set-up: a mother and daughter hitting the road to discover long-buried family secrets told through considered conversations and snooping through dust-coated mementos. But just as you think the story is settling into a familiar rhythm, it hits the brakes, halting all momentum for the mystery it so carefully mapped out. What at first feels like a build-up to a tyre and tarmac travelog adventure, instead feels like a quick nip to the corner shop.

Open Roads follows teenager Tess and single mum Opal on a spur-of-the-moment road trip prompted by the discovery of a hidden trove of diary entries and letters stashed away by their recently deceased grandmother/mother. Wanting to know more about these long-lost secrets, the two set off on a road trip, the two treading the same paths, buildings, and highways that their family traversed decades before.

Release date : March 28, 2024 Platform(s) : PC, PS5, PS4, Switch, Xbox Series X, Xbox One Developer : Open Roads Team Publisher : Annapurna Interactive

The mystery concerns the true mapping of the duo's family tree, with a paper trail of notes, letters, and snippets of written memoirs guiding Tess and Opal to a string of long-abandoned family homes. Each chapter sees you playing as Tess, freely poking around one of these 3D environments and picking up objects for a closer look. In the same way as Life is Strange and Unpacking, Open Roads finds intimacy in everyday objects and the game's opening chapter is a great example of it. The first location is the family home as Tess packs up her room and wanders around the now sparse house filled with moving boxes.

Photos, bills, and written notes create the foundations of this family portrait, but there's joy in picking up the most mundane objects just to have a nose. What's great is that you can call Opal over to give commentary and share memories about particular items, further adding to the importance of these possessions. A blockbuster-style VHS tape of Clueless, a library book about bootlegging, an obnoxiously coloured work uniform – it's not only about the important stuff but we learn the more subtle quirks of these characters too.

Other pit stops on the road include a handful of abandoned environments which are where Open Roads shines. Rummaging around these old, forgotten places feels like you're excavating further into this family's history. They really capture the beauty of somewhere that has been lost to time, and snooping through the dust and grime to find these important relics feels gratifying. Often you'll need to find keys to locked boxes or items to progress the story (a screwdriver to crack open a car's glove compartment, for example), it's a simple way of adding to the mystery and contributes to the feeling that you're actively seeking out answers instead of them being plonked conveniently in front of you.

Blast from the past

These mementos are just objects, but what gives them meaning and purpose are their roles in the family history. I couldn't care about these environments and objects if it weren't for the fact that I'm genuinely invested in the game's characters, and Open Roads does a fantastic job at making you care about both Tess and Opal, in both the writing and what the voice actors have brought to the audio booth. Kaitlyn Dever brings such warmth to 16-year-old Tess. Her excitement is so utterly contagious and she can masterfully make Tess' teenage bluntness come across as comical and endearing.

Keri Russell who plays Opal gives the character fantastic nuance. Every time she talks about her past and upbringing there's a faraway tone in her voice, almost as if she's been transported back to that moment. The mostly static sequences where it's just the two of them chatting in the car highlight their mother-daughter chemistry – even their bickering feels authentic and familiar. Oddly, there's minimal audio and music throughout the game, but the duo's acting carries the atmosphere from beginning to end.

Complementing the actor's stellar performances are the colorful 2D character animations. These portraits are fairly stationary and cycle through a carousel of gestures that convey just enough to color the tone of the person speaking. These charming animated flairs also happen when Tess picks up particular objects. Instead of having the object float in dead space as you pick it up and turn it over, Tess' hand will appear grasping the item – holding up a postcard, flipping over a photograph, or turning a page in a notebook. They're lovely animated details that, again, evoke an intimate connection between the player and the object.

With an engaging mystery set-up, charming animation flourishes, plus the brilliant character acting and writing – Open Roads' first hour feels like you're buckling into a cozy road trip, one with mystery and discovery at every pitstop, punctuated with great dialogue and character work. But as the first hour rolls into the second, and then crawls to the third (final) hour, it becomes apparent that the scale of this mystery is actually quite small in scope, with storylines gradually plodding into an underwhelming stop. It's a shame because the story introduces a handful of interesting topics – the struggle of being a child with divorced parents, the pain of keeping secrets from those you love, and the dynamics between a ruptured family – but these feel unresolved or, at minimum, reach an unsatisfying conclusion.

Tess and Opal – as wonderful as they are – don't grow on their adventure. I never felt like the two understood the other in any new ways, or grew closer (or apart) as a mother and daughter. The road trip feels less like a journey pursuing answers to tough questions and more like a quick holiday break. There are dialogue options, but there's no web of consequences or decision-making, leaving the ending feeling like a handful of missed opportunities.

Even with its flaws, Open Roads still remains a road trip adventure worth playing. It's thematically lightweight with little conflict, which may suit those looking for something more in line with a cozy adventure instead of a character-driven mystery game. It's disappointing in that it doesn't successfully address the challenging subject matters it introduces, but – most certainly here – it's about the journey, not the end destination.

Open Roads Review

An earnest exploration of a family in turmoil, open roads has sharp teeth but ultimately lacks bite..

Sarah Thwaites Avatar

There are times when Open Roads hits alarmingly close to home. Early on in this interactive road trip, your 16-year-old protagonist Tess turns around to reach for a bag perched in the back of her mom’s vintage station wagon – without skipping a beat, she’s accosted by her mother, Opal, from behind the wheel. The altercation flooded my brain with memories of family road trips in the early 2000s: “You can’t just turn around. It’s unsafe,” my dad would say from his vehicular throne, despite how frustratingly close I was to grabbing my Game Boy. Parental authority and nostalgia are just a few of the powerful tools Open Roads harnesses to deliver a playful and relatable story about coming of age in the early aughts, however, hastily resolved problems and the lack of an engaging mystery also make this adventure a little too predictable to leave a lasting impression.

Set in the wake of her grandmother’s passing, Tess and her mother are forced to navigate grief and economic uncertainty as they cope with the breakdown of their nuclear family. Tess’s father is distant, in touch via text alone, while her mother maintains a tough exterior for her daughter’s sake. Stuck in the middle, Tess’s optimistic outlook shines through but hides a trove of complex emotions. Open Roads’ exceptional Hollywood leads, Keri Russell and Kaitlyn Dever, amplify their uncomfortably raw exchanges – Russell’s Opal is believably guarded but capable of arresting warmth, whereas Dever’s Tess balances youthful naivete with spirited angst. Tonal subtext abounds as emotions run high, and I felt connected to these characters as early as the opening back-and-forth.

Open Roads’ art style leaves a lasting first impression as well. Hand-drawn 2D characters are layered on top of meticulously detailed 3D environments, giving this world a unique, dreamlike quality. Imperfections augment scribbled notes, juxtaposing them against the angular digital backdrop – and I couldn’t help but inspect the scratches and flecks of dust on a chunky iMac lookalike I came across at one point. While this trip is mostly isolating by design, the touches of life, like soot particles and trees swaying in the wind, make you feel more at peace in the solitude.

In the process of sorting through her late grandmother's belongings, Tess uncovers a curious briefcase of relics, complete with a cryptic postcard from an unknown sender beckoning her grandma to join them. Keen to escape the immediate burdens of loss, Tess convinces a reluctant Opal to cross the country and unravel a generational family mystery. Melancholic but strangely engrossing, Open Roads almost entirely consists of rummaging through dioramas lost to time. From derelict summer houses to musty hotel rooms, each new location contains sprinklings of forgotten belongings to interact with alongside precious tidbits of environmental storytelling I relished in examining with a fine-tooth comb. An admittedly repetitive process, standout items like charming childhood drawings that mask coping mechanisms with superheroes and classic rented DVDs managed to keep me on the hook while effectively time-stamping each hazy era they were from.

How long do you like your games generally?

A light smattering of systems allow you to engage your inner holistic detective to piece together the past – but don’t expect deep puzzles or critical thinking. Across its roughly three-and-a-half-hour run time, Open Roads didn’t get more complicated than finding an odd opening to another room or searching out a partially hidden letter. The more you scour, the more you’ll confront Open Roads' past-meets-present storytelling that revolves around Opal’s own childhood traumas, which are finding new life in the issues now plaguing her daughter. Like phantom wounds passed down through the generations, their happy-go-lucky veneer masks troubling truths that are, for the most part, intriguing to unfurl.

Interacting with items can prompt Tess’s inner monologue and offer a window into her developing psyche, while plot-forwarding objects trigger eye-opening conversations with her mother. Seeking out as many of these touchy scenes as possible helped ground me in Open Roads story and compelled me to tinker with all the toys I could find in search of more emotive exposition. Unfortunately, such loaded artifacts were few and far between, but the conversations surrounding them felt sincere and created a nervous atmosphere that kept me guessing as the family's secrets started to surface.

Environmental inspections are spliced between highway drives where Tess and Opal process the latest day while coasting to the next spot. Where static locations focus on Opal’s murky upbringing and faulty memory, the car conversations center around Tess’s present issues with her mom. Initially, the mysterious man’s letters and postcards appear to be the hook, but the persistent interpersonal turmoil is by far Open Roads’ defining asset.

It was disappointing then that as the player-come-passenger in this journey, I began to feel like a ghost in the machine, privy to all the surrounding context but unable to engage with it meaningfully. Even though I could radio surf, flick door locks, and text as the autumnal foliage passed me by, I felt distant from Tess as the story soldiered on. Despite the amount of time I’d spent in her head, Tess’s actions felt unusually measured for a teenager dealing with such traumatic events. I often wished that Open Roads would stop pulling its punches until, surprisingly quickly, the credits rolled. A few breezy puzzles offered fleeting resistance, but the twists and turns of the story didn’t provoke the emotion I expected when they finally arrived. The pieces of this quilt never quite stitched together for me.

This feeling is most frustrating when you’re offered options in dialogue. I was often keen to chase certain plot threads, but my choices always tended to lead to the same place, and the inconsequentiality of what I thought was important subtext became disheartening when I realized this in my second playthrough. The investigative spirit in its early-game explorations was never nurtured during Open Road’s conversations. Heavy discussions about mental health felt like an opportunity to level the playing field between Tess and her mother, but such moments aren’t allowed to breathe in a believable way. A safe and disappointing climax only confirmed my fears, providing an easy answer that felt like a messily applied band-aid over a far more complex wound. I was left longing for more of the ugly, believable humanity we all partake in, but Open Roads decidedly orbits.

Propelled by a star-studded cast and charming retro world, Open Roads' tale of family tragedy stumbles over its heavier themes, delivering an earnest but ultimately safe road trip mystery. Pottering through meticulous environments full of kitschy decor was at least enough to keep me entertained for its short runtime. However, with sharp teeth and no bite, I was left hungry for something meatier and more emotionally charged by the time the credits rolled.

The possibility of using furfurol for the production of ash-free high-strength active carbons with spheroidal particles as adsorbents and catalyst supports is substantiated. A single-stage process that incorporates the resinification of furfurol, the molding of a spherical product, and its hardening while allowing the process cycle time and the cost of equipment to be reduced is developed. Derivatographic, X-ray diffraction, mercury porometric, and adsorption studies of the carbonization of the molded spherical product are performed to characterize the development of the primary and porous structures of carbon residues. Ash-free active carbons with spheroidal particles, a full volume of sorbing micro- and mesopores (up to 1.50 cm 3 /g), and a uniquely high mechanical strength (its abrasion rate is three orders of magnitude lower than that of industrial active carbons) are obtained via the vapor-gas activation of a carbonized product. The obtained active carbons are superior to all known foreign and domestic analogues and are promising for the production of catalysts that operate under severe regimes, i.e., in moving and fluidized beds.
