A Unique View

Watch from shore, submerge into history.

The original Submarine Voyage debuted on June 14, 1959 and was one of the first “E” Ticket attractions. The attraction was loosely inspired by the 1958 voyage to the North Pole by the world’s first nuclear-powered submarine, the USS Nautilus , which shares its name with the fictional submarine in 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea .

The attraction enjoyed a 39-year run at Disneyland Park, setting sail for the last time on September 7, 1998. The current attraction uses the same lagoon and submarines as the original.

11 Wonderful Former Disney Rides

By rebecca oconnell | oct 13, 2014.

daveland

Since Disneyland's opening in 1955, and Disney World's in 1971, a lot of attractions have come and gone. Disney likes to hold on to its successful rides, but some were too costly, or just not popular enough; others were just collateral damage for newer and more exciting rides (the fact that Disney World's Mr. Toad's Wild Ride closed still stings). These rides are lost, but not forgotten. Let us look back at the nostalgic graveyard of defunct Disney rides.

1. Phantom Boats // Disneyland, 1955 – 1956

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

davelandweb.com

This ride never stood a chance. Lasting just a year, its big problem was that it was  too boring.  Originally called the Tomorrowland Boats, this ride featured slowly moving white vessels that visitors could drive around the lagoon. On August 16, 1955, they were rechristened The Phantom Boats and redesigned with tailfins that were apparently a mechanical nightmare ; the boats left park-goers stranded in the middle of the lake and undoubtedly very unhappy. The boats' last appearance was in the summer of 1956, making it the first ride to be removed from Disneyland.

2. Submarine Voyage // Disneyland, 1956 - 1998

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Inspired by the USS Nautilus , the first nuclear-powered submarine, The Submarine Voyage replaced the Phantom Boats. Passengers could board the Disneyland Nautilus—or one of the other seven submarines—for a fanciful re-creation of the actual craft's journey to the North Pole. Although the submarines never actually went underwater, bubble jets gave the illusion of diving deeper and props were scattered throughout the track. Patrons could see sea monsters, turtles, glowing fish, and even mermaids. You can check out this video from 1959 to see what it was like:

The ride stayed mostly the same for its duration, with the exception of a new coat of yellow paint in the mid-'80s. A similar ride opened in Disney World called 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea  in 1971 , and d ue to costs, the Florida ride was shut down in 1994, followed by the California version in 1998. The original Submarine Voyage was renovated to become a new ride. Today, you can hop in a submarine and see your favorite Disney fish in the  Finding Nemo  Submarine Voyage.

3. Flying Saucers // Disneyland, 1961 - 1966

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

The Flying Saucers ride was sort of a mix between bumper cars and air hockey. Giant saucers big enough for an average-sized  person to sit on were propelled across an arena by air valves; riders shifted their weight to direct the craft where they wanted to go. It was popular, but suffered from a lot of problems when larger guests tried to ride. As a result, it closed for good in 1966. Today, the spot is occupied by Space Mountain.

4. Astro Jets // Disneyland, 1956 - 1966

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Located in the heart of Tomorrowland, this delightfully retro-futuristic ride gave patrons a great view of the park. Each rocket was big enough to snugly fit two riders and came with a lever that made it go up and down. Rocket Jets, a similar spinning ride with more modern-looking jets, eventually replaced the ride in 1967.

5. Rainbow Mountain Stagecoach Ride // Disneyland, 1956 - 1959

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

The stagecoaches in Frontierland gave visitors a chance to get the feel for transportation in the Wild West. After deciding whether to sit up top or inside, riders were transported back in time and through the Living Desert. The scenery featured balancing boulders, cartoonish cacti, and interesting rock formations. Unfortunately, the stagecoaches had a tendency to tip over and spook the mules; breakaway harnesses resulted in stranded passengers and missing mules—yikes!

6. Rainbow Caverns Mine Train // Disneyland, 1956 - 1977

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

The mine train also went through the Living Desert, but unlike the stagecoaches, this ride brought its passengers into the rainbow caverns. Riders were transported through a beautiful cavern illuminated by beautifully colorful lakes and waterfalls. After the ride, patrons exited through the Mineral Hall, where rocks glow with the power of a black light.

The ride was expanded in 1960, and became the Mine Train Through Nature's Wonderland . This new and improved ride now featured robotic animals, fossils, and Cascade Peak, a large mountain complete with waterfall. The ride was replaced by the rollercoaster Big Thunder Mountain Railroad in 1979, and most of the remnants have been bulldozed or removed.

7. Delta Dreamflight // Disney World, 1989 - 1998

This ride aimed to encourage visitors to travel the world, and more importantly, to use Delta Airlines to do it. The attraction featured a hodge-podge of projection screens, animatronics, and pop-up storybook style sets. Passengers waited in an area fashioned to look like a terminal, and climbed into painted blue cars. The guests would then “take off” and travel through the ride. The ride was replaced by Buzz Lightyear's Space Ranger Spin in 1998.

8. Adventure Thru Inner Space // Disneyland 1967 - 1985

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Patrons of this ride would start by climbing into "Atommobiles." These cars would slowly enter a giant microscope, where the riders would then be "shrunk down" to microscopic size. (People waiting on line would watch the visitors ahead of them shrink and disappear.) After passing through the microscope, passengers were then shot into a snowflake.  This simulation was created by moving the cars back and forth while bringing them through a dark tunnel. The tiny navigators emerged from the dark tunnel and were welcomed by gigantic falling snowflakes. As the riders shrunk in size, the sights changed: giant snowflakes became molecules, and molecules broke down to atoms. Up on top, a giant eye watched the ride through a microscope. The ride was eventually replaced by Star Tours in 1986.

9. PeopleMover // Disneyland 1967 - 1995

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

The PeopleMover was a lot like Florida’s Tomorrowland Transit Authority PeopleMover. Made to seem like the transportation mode of the future, these trains took patrons on a 16-minute ride around the park. The loading was done with some hustle: the train cars never stopped and doors closed automatically. After hopping inside, riders got a nice view of Tomorrowland. The ride was closed in 1995 in an effort to save money, but it remains standing.

10. Flight to the Moon // Disneyland 1967 – 1975

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Previously called Rocket to the Moon, Flight to the Moon took place beside the Moonliner, the giant spaceship in the middle of Tomorrowland. At the time, the ship was the tallest thing in the park. The attraction inside was more like a simulation than a ride; visitors would sit in chairs surrounded by projectors, and the chairs would vibrate as the screens showed images of the moon. In 1975, the ride changed to Mission to Mars since, by then, humans had already been to the moon. No word on what the next iteration will be when we finally make it to Mars.

11. Journey Into Imagination // Disney World 1983 - 1998

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Loren Javier

Like many other Disney rides, this one has seen many different incarnations. The current ride is called Journey into Imagination with Figment, but Figment didn’t always have such a large role. In the original ride, the passengers glided through what seemed like clouds. A bearded man with a top hat and goggles would fly over to the guests and introduce himself as “Dreamfinder.” He drove a contraption that collected dreams and the guests came along for the ride. The visitors are shown multiple rooms with different themes, like art, literature, and science. Today, the ride focuses on the five senses and Figment is in every scene (although Dreamfinder is nowhere to be found).

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage Ride Review

The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is a classic Disneyland attraction located in Tomorrowland that takes riders on an underwater adventure through scenes from the popular Disney-Pixar film Finding Nemo. Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage 4K POV

History of the Attraction

The original Submarine Voyage ride opened in 1959 as one of the first “E-Ticket” attractions in Disneyland history. It featured 8 submarines built by the Disney Studios that could hold 38 riders each. The subs followed a track submerged just below the surface of the large man-made lagoon. Scenes included the North Pole, a sea of whales, and the lost continent of Atlantis. After nearly 40 years of operation, the ride closed in 1998.

It sat dormant until it was reimagined with the Finding Nemo theme and reopened in 2007. The refreshed attraction reused the same submarines and track layout but included all-new show scenes inspired by the popular Pixar  film. Since its debut, the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage has undergone periodic refurbishments and upgrades to maintain show quality. The ride remains a classic Disneyland attraction that continues to delight guests of all ages with its immersive underwater adventure.

Loading & Queue

The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage loads 8 yellow submarines at a time, with each submarine holding around 40 riders. After boarding, the submarines depart one by one into the large lagoon area. The queue winds underneath the Disneyland Monorail tracks and is made to look like a series of caverns and tunnels designed to resemble an underwater research facility. The dimly lit passages are adorned with nautical paraphernalia, creating an authentic and slightly mysterious ambiance while providing ample shade while waiting in line.

Ride Experience

As soon as the submarine departs, it slowly submerges underwater into a vibrant coral reef filled with tropical fish and sea life. Riders can view the underwater scenery through real working portholes on the sides of the submarine. The captain provides narration and information over the onboard speakers as the sub continues on its  journey. Some of the scenes and characters riders encounter throughout the voyage include:

  • Darla  – The braces-wearing niece from the movie diving near the coral reef
  • Crush and Squirt  – The sea turtles surfing the East Australian Current
  • Mr. Ray and his class  – Swimming along looking for Nemo
  • Bruce and friends  – The vegetarian sharks swimming near a sunken shipwreck
  • Jellyfish Forest  – With lighting effects simulating stings
  • Undersea Volcano  – With bubbling lava flows

The ride’s climax occurs when the submarine narrowly escapes an erupting undersea volcano, getting caught up in the lava flow along with Marlin, Nemo, and Dory. The sub makes it back safely to the reef, culminating with a pod of humpback whales swimming  by. Throughout the experience, Disney utilizes a combination of detailed physical set pieces, projections, lighting effects, and bubbly water to convincingly simulate the feeling of being underwater. The onboard audio also helps tie the scenes together with music and dialogue from the film.

Tips for Riding

  • Arrive early and head to the ride immediately at park opening or during Early Entry to avoid long standby waits. The line typically gets very long later in the day.
  • Request to ride in the front center seats for the most immersive experience, with the best views out the front portholes.
  • Keep an eye out for hidden Mickeys designed into the rockwork and coral!
  • Riders who are claustrophobic or unable to use the steep staircases to board can ask to experience the ride from the Marine Observation Outpost viewing area instead.
  • Photography and videography are not allowed during the ride.
  • The dark environment, loud noises, and simulated motion may frighten some young children.

The Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is a beloved Disneyland classic that provides a leisurely and immersive underwater experience. While not a thrill ride by any means, the incredible attention to detail and unique ride system make it a one-of-a-kind attraction worth checking out. Riding during early morning hours is highly recommended to avoid long wait times.

Fans of the movie will enjoy spotting their favorite characters, and all riders are sure to appreciate cruising through the vibrant, lifelike underwater scenery. Minor criticisms include the dated ride system and small porthole views, but overall the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage is a charming Disney ride that makes you truly feel submerged on a deep sea adventure.

Best Disneyland Attractions & Ride Guide

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Our Disneyland ride guide contains short reviews of our top picks, as well as numerical scores for every attraction in Disneyland. If you’re planning a Disneyland trip, you need to know which attractions are must-dos, and which you can skip. ( Updated March 28, 2022. )

This list is broken down into three categories: Star Wars rides, iconic must-do attractions, and everything else. The first group is all of the recent additions in Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge and Tomorrowland. The top Disneyland attractions grouping includes plenty of recognizable names, along with a few sleeper-picks that many people overlook–but are actually really enjoyable. Finally, there’s everything else–the filler, more or less.

While we don’t recommend skipping any attractions based upon the advice of others if you have the time to experience them all, if your time is limited, here are the must-see rides and attractions in Disneyland. Note that this list only covers Disneyland, the park. We have a separate review of attractions at Disney California Adventure .

Not every attraction at Disneyland is a blockbuster, “E-Ticket” attraction that draws huge crowds. While we love these big-name attractions, we feel a day at Disneyland is about variety, and some of the lesser-known attractions are also very well done, just not in a ‘knock-your-socks-off’ way. The list of “top attractions” includes everything we feel makes for a well-rounded day at Disneyland.

Ideally, you’ll have more than one day to explore Disneyland and have a separate day for Disney California Adventure ( read our Disneyland Ticket Guide to determine which tickets are best), so you will be able to experience everything, not just our top picks. If you are stretched for time and only have one day for both parks, you won’t be able to experience everything on this “top attractions” list.

Numerical scores are on a scale of 1 to 10, and only take into consideration overall quality relative to that specific type of attraction. In other words, dark rides are judged against other dark rides, coasters are judged against other coasters, etc., to create a relatively level playing field. We do not take into account how different demographics will like the attraction.

Obviously, if an attraction has a height restriction that precludes kids from riding it, its “score” for them wouldn’t be as high as what we’ve listed. Likewise on attractions that are geared towards kids but may not appeal as much to adults. Here, we only consider how well done the attraction is, overall, within its category.

Star Wars Rides at Disneyland

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance (10/10)  – The blockbuster of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, this is a revolutionary feat of Imagineering that redefines what a theme park attraction can be. It blurs the boundaries of queue, pre-show, attraction, and puts guests in the middle of an intergalactic adventure. We could go on and on about this mind-blowing experience and its nonstop barrage of wow-moments. For that, you can read our  spoiler-free Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Review .

However, the purpose of this post is to offer ratings, reviews, and practical advice for best experiencing the attractions in an efficient manner. Without question, this is the most difficult to do ride at Disneyland. Due to its unreliability and downtime, it involves jumping through some hoops–which are all worth it. Reading our Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance Ride Guide & FAQ  before your trip is  essential.

Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run (9/10) – The ‘supporting’ attraction for Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge is currently the only one open, which has perhaps resulted in unfairly elevated expectations for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. It’s definitely not a perfect attraction, with the interactivity being a mixed bag and a gameplay-centric ride not being everyone’s cup of tea. Moreover, not all of the roles are of equal enjoyment. In terms of “wish fulfillment,” pilot is definitely the best option.

However, there’s a lot to like about Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run beyond the game/ride experience. The queue is beautiful, the pre-show is impressive, and stepping foot into the Millennium Falcon while waiting to board the ride is arguably the highlight of the attraction as a whole. Read our Millennium Falcon Smugglers Run Review for more feedback on the attraction.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Hyperspace Mountain (9/10) – Hyperspace Mountain is a dark rollercoaster through space, themed (lightly) to Star Wars. There are some cool details here, a blast-off tunnel, space battle, and on-board music to spice up the experience. Hyperspace Mountain is a Genie+ Lightning Lane attraction, and it’s highly recommended that you utilize it. This is basically a “Star Wars consolation prize” if lines are too long for Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run.

Star Tours: The Adventures Continue (8.5/10) – Star Tours is a flight-motion simulator into the Star Wars world with digital 3D video, Audio Animatronics characters, and in-vehicle effects. Star Tours features multiple storylines, with some 64 different experience combinations, making it an attraction you can experience again and again. It’s even been updated to fit within the ‘universe’ of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge (one of the destinations is now Batuu!) Star Tours is a must-do.

Iconic Disneyland Rides & Attractions

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Pirates of the Caribbean (10/10) – Pirates of the Caribbean is a boat-ride back in time to the days when pirates ruled the Caribbean. The attractions features Audio Animatronics pirates engaging in swashbuckling mayhem. This is one of our favorite attractions at Disneyland.

Pirates of the Caribbean is considerably longer than the Walt Disney World attraction by the same name. It contains a considerable amount of detail (we recommend experiencing it more than once to take in everything), a catchy song, and lines usually aren’t too long due to its high capacity.

Indiana Jones Adventure (10/10) – Indiana Jones Adventure is a thrilling ride aboard a transport vehicle deep into the Temple of the Forbidden Eye on a daring journey in search of unimaginable rewards. Along the way you’ll incur the wrath of Mara, who will force you to encounter caverns of bubbling death, screaming undead mummies, erupting lava, evil wraiths, and giant snakes.

Everything about this attraction is excellent–it’s our favorite attraction at Disneyland. From the incredible queue to the humorous pre-show to the special effects-laden attraction itself, Indiana Jones Adventure is perfect and still cutting edge. As Sallah would (and does) say, “it is unlike anything you have ever experienced, I assure you!” This attraction is incredibly popular and routinely has long waits, making it a great use of the Lightning Lane.

disneyland-january-2016-035

Haunted Mansion (10/10) – The Haunted Mansion is a slow-moving dark ride that is home to 999 happy haunts that are dying to meet you. No further explanation should be necessary; if you aren’t familiar with the premise of the Haunted Mansion, you’re probably living under a rock. I have no interest in rock-dwellers reading this website.

For those familiar with the Walt Disney World version, a lot in the Disneyland version is the same or similar. Die-hard Haunted Mansion fans will disagree, but the vast majority of guests won’t notice many differences. If you visit between early September and the end of the year, you’ll see “ Haunted Mansion Holiday ,” which features a Nightmare Before Christmas overlay. It’s awesome.

Matterhorn (8/10) – The Matterhorn was Expedition Everest decades before Expedition Everest was even conceived. This rollercoaster through the yeti-guarded mountain is a thrilling attraction that most guests will enjoy. The Matterhorn received some new show scenes that are fairly cool. Genie+ is available at the Matterhorn, and it’s a good use of the Lightning Lane to avoid long waits.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage (8/10) – A relatively new attraction at Disneyland, the Finding Nemo Submarine Voyage takes guests aboard actual submarines to find Nemo. It’s a relatively long attraction with some awesome sets and detail. The wait times can be long, the queue is incredibly boring, and there’s no Lightning Lane, but the payoff is well worth the boring wait, especially for Finding Nemo fans.

Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln (8/10) – Another Disneyland classic. This attraction is a hybrid film and Audio Animatronics performance by the famous U.S. President. It incorporates some of the best elements of Hall of Presidents and the American Adventure at Walt Disney World, including my personal favorite, the song “Golden Dreams.” Many guests, mostly communists, find this attraction boring.

We absolutely love Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln. It’s not a thrill-ride, to be sure, but it is an incredibly well-done glimpse into the history of this great nation. If you have time beforehand, check out the Steve Martin (and Donald Duck) video in the lobby created for Disneyland’s 50th anniversary.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Storybook Land Canal Boats (8.5/10) – The Storybook Land Canal Boats are a Disneyland classic. Cast Member-led boats of guests float past miniaturized versions of villages, castles, and homes of Disney characters. It’s a cute, “peaceful” attraction, not a big-budget ride that will knock your socks off.

Our favorite scene is Pinocchio’s village, because the Imagineers have designed this scene so the Matterhorn appears as another mountain towering over the village in the background. This attraction may seem simple, and it is, but that’s part of the charm. Storybook Land Canal Boats isn’t especially popular, but long lines can form because it has very low hourly capacity. We recommend hitting it early in the morning or late at night.

Casey Jr. Circus Train (8/10) – Another Fantasyland staple, the Casey Jr. Circus Train offers a scenic view of Fantasyland as guests ride aboard cars or in cages (now is your chance to finally put the kids in a cage!). It’s simple, but has a lot of appeal thanks to the great views it offers of Fantasyland, the fun music, and the whimsy of the train, itself. Even as adults, it’s a favorite attraction of ours (and we have no childhood nostalgia towards it) that is difficult to articulate the appeal of. It has a real kinetic energy and is just good, clean fun.

Peter Pan’s Flight (9/10) – Peter Pan’s Flight was re-imagined a few years ago to modernize it and add some great new effects. It’s considered a Fantasyland classic, as it takes guests in “flying” ships above London and Neverland, but really, it’s not as impressive as it sounds, especially given the hour-plus waits it regularly attracts. Flying over London is cool (and small children might actually “buy” the flying part), but that’s its big draw. We enjoy Peter Pan’s Flight, but I wouldn’t wait more than 30 minutes in line for it. If you arrive right at park opening, this is the attraction to hit first.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Splash Mountain (9/10) – Splash Mountain is a log flume ride that features a story from Disney’s Song of the South film, and climaxes with a big drop into the briar patch. There are a ton of Audio Animatronics here, and those plus the detailed environments make the attraction. The only downside is that the pacing is a bit too fast, guests get too wet, and the story is a bit disjointed. Still, it’s a must-see, and one of Disneyland’s best attractions.

Jungle Cruise (9/10) – Jungle Cruise is a boat ride through the rivers of Adventureland that encounters hippos, lions, and piranhas, among other animals and natives, along the way. However, the real highlight here is the non-stop zingers of the skippers who pilot the boats. If you don’t appreciate dry, intentionally corny, or self-aware humor, you may not like Jungle Cruise.

We’ve seen a number of guests exit the Jungle Cruise with confused looks on their faces. Jungle Cruise skippers often break the carefully-crafted illusion of Disneyland (example: pointing out the “p” breed of snake is not a python, but instead, “plastic”). Most kids won’t get these jokes, so don’t worry about that. We love the Jungle Cruise, as do most guests, but some are not fans. It’s also an attraction that is highly skipper-dependent. If you get a poor skipper, your ride will be sub-par.

Big Thunder Mountain Railroad (9/10) – A guest favorite, Big Thunder Mountain a rollercoaster themed as a runaway mine train on a ride through the barren landscape of the Old West. Hang onto your hats and glasses, because Big Thunder Mountain Railroad is “the wildest ride in the wilderness!”

It was refurbished a couple of years ago to add some cool new effects, plus a smoother track. Big Thunder Mountain is a Genie+ Lightning Lane attraction, and it might behoove you to use that if lines are over 40 minutes for it. There are differences between this Big Thunder and Walt Disney World’s, notably the town of Rainbow Ridge (a remnant from the classic Mine Train Thru Nature’s Wonderland attraction).

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Disneyland Railroad (8.5/10) – The Disneyland Railroad is, quite simply, a normal railroad that circles Disneyland in a scenic manner. However, the Disneyland Railroad is dramatically different. Not only does it have a scene with real, live (okay, Audio Animatronics) dinosaurs called Primeval World, but it has the history of being Walt Disney’s railroad. We covered the changes to the Disneyland Railroad post-refurbishment in our Grand Circle Tour of Disneyland post. By and large, we are fans of the more engaging scenery on the new route.

Walt Disney’s Enchanted Tiki Room (8/10) – Enchanted Tiki Room is a 15-minute musical serenade from Audio Animatronics birds and offers a celebration of island romance and wonder performed in a theater-in-the-round. You’ve probably heard these catchy songs before; the fun music of this attraction, and its history, makes it an attraction not to be missed.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Snow White’s Enchanted Wish (9/10) – With the recent reimagining, Imagineers took the weakest of the Fantasyland dark rides and turned it from something dated and disjointed into something with fun flow, impressive effects, and a few magical moments. Relatively simple, but shockingly effective, improvements cause it to jump up the list.

‘it’s a small world’ (9/10) – ‘it’s a small world’ is the iconic attraction featuring the children of the world and that oh-so divisive song. Again, unless you live under a rock, you’re familiar with it. ‘it’s a small world’ at Disneyland differs substantially from the Walt Disney World version; it features Disney characters tastefully inserted into several show-scenes, an outdoor queue and facade, and other scene differences. If visiting at Christmas, ‘it’s a small world’ holiday is not to be missed .

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride (7.5/10) – Another Fantasyland dark ride favorite, this attraction goes into the irreverent world of Mr. Toad from the Wind and the Willows. Worth experiencing for the irreverence alone. On what other Disney attraction do you go to bar, crash into a truck, and go to hell?! It would never be built in today’s politically correct era, and is worth experiencing for that alone, although the attraction itself is woefully outdated.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Alice in Wonderland (8.5/10) – Another Fantasyland dark ride that was recently re-imagined and updated, this one takes guests into the world of Alice in Wonderland. This is our favorite Fantasyland dark ride, and we’re not even fans of Alice in Wonderland. Best hit early in the morning on a fast-paced tour of the Fantasyland dark rides, as lines can get long for it later in the day due to its lower capacity.

Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin (8.5/10) – Roger Rabbit’s Car Toon Spin takes guests aboard a dark ride voyage into Toontown in interactive vehicles (guests can spin them). Lines are often long for Car Toon Spin, making it a good Genie+ Lightning Lane attraction. It’s the only attraction worth experiencing in the Toontown land of Disneyland. ( TOONTOWN IS CLOSED UNTIL MARCH 2023 .)

Sleeping Beauty Castle Walk-Through (8/10) – A simple, but fun walk-through of Sleeping Beauty Castle featuring interactive “window” scenes from the film. An often overlooked, but very cool attraction that takes little time to experience and should not be missed.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Disneyland Forever Fireworks (10/10) – Fun visuals from animated films and a memorable soundtrack coupled with a few original songs and nods to Disneyland’s past plus founder Walt Disney make this a well-balanced nighttime spectacular that appeals to locals and first-timers alike. The effects are dazzling, from the colorful bursts that fit the music to the flying Nemo and Matterhorn ‘eruption’ that induce plenty of ‘wows’ from the audience at various points. The movies featured are a diverse group, from Disney classics to Pixar to even Frozen, which does not feel shoehorned into the show.

Although the core of the show is “only” a montage, this works perfectly well. This fireworks show is pure Disney magic. My sentimentality aside, I think Disneyland Forever is far and away the best fireworks show to ever be shown in a castle park. Not only should you not miss it, but you should not miss it from a variety of vantage points. See our Disneyland Fireworks Viewing Guide for recommended locations (and where to avoid).

Fantasmic! (10/10) – Fantasmic! is a musical battle between the forces of good and evil set in Mickey’s dreams (and on the Rivers of America) with stunning effects, including pyrotechnics, water, lasers, fire, and a huge dragon. If you’ve seen Fantasmic! at Walt Disney World, you haven’t actually seen Fantasmic!

The Disneyland version is infinitely better, and features a Pirates of the Caribbean battle scene (on the Sailing Ship Columbia) replacing the Pocahontas scene, huge Maleficent dragon, and other things. The new version of Fantasmic debuted last summer– here’s our review of Fantasmic 2.0 . Here are our other tips for the best places to view Fantasmic, and tips for photographing it .

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Autopia (7/10) – Kids might like it as it gives them a chance to drive; lush environments and large track. The addition of ASIMO and Bird to the attraction give it new life, and really improve the experience.

Buzz Lightyear’s Astro Blasters (7/10) – An interactive and competitive game-attraction to save the universe in this blast-em-up, ride-through adventure. It’s like a ride-through video game, and is a lot of fun. We often find ourselves riding re-riding late at night when there’s no line to see who can get the highest score. This attraction is far superior to the Walt Disney World version of the attraction.

Disneyland Monorail (7/10) – A relaxing trip around Disneyland Resort, but with a lot of glimpses of the outside world. We love monorails, but in this case, we prefer the Disneyland Railroad.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Sailing Ship Columbia (7/10) – Another relaxing float around the Rivers of America.

Davy Crockett’s Explorer Canoes (7/10) – Paddle an actual canoe on the Rivers of America. Not for everyone, but a lot of fun for those who enjoy this sort of thing. Definitely not an attraction you’d expect in a modern theme park.

Tom Sawyer Island (6.5/10) – Fun and highly immersive play area for kids, now featuring pirates.

Mark Twain Riverboat (8/10) – Relaxing way to float around the Rivers of America. Great way to spend a peaceful afternoon, but we recommend the Disneyland Railroad over it if you’re limited in time.

fantasyland-pavers-castle-carrousel-wet-pavement-wide-open copy

King Arthur Carrousel (4.5/10) – Garden variety carousel.

Mad Tea Party (6/10) – Gets points because it’s iconic and somewhat fun if you have the time.

Pinocchio’s Daring Journey (6/10) – Decent dark ride based on Pinocchio. Very dated, but charming.

Tarzan’s Treehouse (7/10) – Fun area that can be quickly explored as a nice change of pace from doing rides.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh (6/10) – A newer Fantasyland-style dark ride located in Critter Country that’s enjoyable, but still feels dated.

This leaves out random pieces of entertainment, character meet & greets, and a few other seasonal offerings, but it should cover every attraction listed on a Disneyland park map. We’d strongly encourage you to try everything for yourself, as your opinions might differ from ours, but if time is an issue, skip the attractions on the lower list.

I thought Smuggler’s Run was over rated and boring. Other than that, I agree with this post and rating for the rides.

' src=

I didn’t see “Dumbo” on this rating. Wondering if that means you would skip it, or if it was just left out. Thanks!

Regarding Matterhorn Bobsleds, it’s worth noting that there are two unique tracks. The track with the entrance closest to Fantasyland (right side) is smoother and less jarring than the other track (left/Tomorrowland side). Most days you must use Fastpass in order to ride the right/smoother side.

This might be too nerdy (inside baseball) for only the most obsessive fans to care about, but guests visiting Disneyland for the 1st time (especially guests already familiar with the Florida parks) might be interested to know which currently existing rides Walt Disney himself personally rode. Here they are: Storybook Land Canal Boats, Jungle Cruise, Mad Tea Party, Mark Twain Riverboat, Mr. Toads Wild Ride, Peter Pan’s Flight, Autopia, Disneyland Railroad, Snow White’s Scary Adventures, King Arthur Carousel, Casey Jr Circus Train, Dumbo the Flying Elephant, Davy Crocketts Explorer Canoes, Alice in Wonderland, Sailing Ship Columbia, Disneyland Monorail, Matterhorn Bobsleds, Enchanted Tiki Room, and It’s A Small World. (Pirates of the Caribbean opened 3 months after his death.) So it’s kinda cool to know that there’s actually one Disney thrill ride (the Matterhorn) that’s as thrilling today as it was when Walt rode it in June 1959.

“So it’s kinda cool to know that there’s actually one Disney thrill ride (the Matterhorn) that’s as thrilling today as it was when Walt rode it in June 1959.”

When Walt first rode Matterhorn, they actually used large amounts of hay to slow the bobsleds down–it was essentially a literal crash landing. Water is now in this same place with the bobsled ‘splashdown’ being how the vehicles are slowed down at the end.

Suffice to say, the sense of danger on a ride that crashes into hay to slow down might’ve made Walt’s version a tad more thrilling than today’s Matterhorn! 😉

Otherwise, nice list–I think plenty of people will find this fascinating!

I think that rating Hyperspace Mountain ahead of Smuggler’s Run is totally uncalled for. First off, the queue and pre-show of Hyperspace Mountain consists of a queen that is only themed at the loading area, and little screens playing an invariable message from Admiral Ackbar. The queue and pre-show of Smuggler’s Run consists of a meticulously themed queue from beginning to end, variable dialogue throughout the entire queue, and a pre-show featuring the second most complex animatronic that Disney has ever created, not to mention the experience of stepping aboard the Millennium Falcon. Secondly, the ride component itself is much more realistic on Smuggler’s Run. Smuggler’s Run creates a very convincing illusion of actually flying the Millennium Falcon, while nobody aboard Hyperspace Mountain is actually thematically convinced that they are flying an X-Wing. Tom, I would be interested in hearing your reason for giving Hyperspace Mountain a 10/10 rating, because I don’t see how a 40 year old roller coaster with subpar projections deserves that rating

You’re right.

When I originally rated these rides, I was definitely more lax with scores than I was when I just reviewed Millennium Falcon: Smugglers Run. I’ve gone and updated several scores in an attempt to ‘normalize’ things.

I’m still grading on something of a ‘for what it is’ curve. It’s impossible to compare a $100+ ride from 2019 to a ~$1 million ride from the 1960s; history and charm definitely count for something, just as tech wizardry counts for something.

I totally agree that history and charm count for something! My favorite attraction at Disneyland Park is the Disneyland Railroad. Even simple concepts, executed well, can be just as fantastic (although in different ways) as multimillion dollar e-tickets.

Speaking of history and charm, I’m really glad that the isolation of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge has preserved (for the most part) the charm and quaintness of the park.

Thanks for putting out great content on this blog. It’s a great resource.

Hey, I’m new to this site but might stumble upon an answer later…. Visiting with younger and older children in interested in rides that suit the little ones, especially if they might not be able to go on the bigger rides. Thanks

Hey Tom – I’m eager to see your numerical rating of Smuggler’s Run and some of the new attractions at DCA (assuming you have experienced them). Any chance that’s coming soon??

Yeah. Lots of posts to update post-Galaxy’s Edge, but this is on the list!

Great – can’t wait! Your numbers are the best numbers. All of your coverage of GE has been amazing, so thank you.

25 Best Rides at Disneyland ranked by a local! (2024)

Affiliate Disclosure for Destination Checkoff

Being a California local, I visit Disneyland every year and sometimes twice a year with my family. I have experienced all the Disneyland rides several times, including the newest Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway ride in Mickey’s Toontown!

In this article, I will list the best rides at Disneyland in the thrill and family categories and which ones are an absolute must.

Disneyland, California, is the first Disney theme park imagined and built by Walt Disney itself and still has some original rides from the 1950s era!

While Disneyland is famous for its nostalgic themes in rides like fairytale-based rides in Fantasyland and classic movie-themed rides in Frontierland, it has also introduced a Star Wars themed land, which has been a huge hit with Star Wars fans.

My favorite Disneyland rides are the newest rides – Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance and Mickey & Minnie’s Runaway Railway. Indiana Jones Adventure is a close second!

Best Thrill Rides at Disneyland

Below are the best thrill rides that should not be missed on your trip to Disneyland. I have ranked them such that the very best ones are at the top of the list.

Disneyland has so many themed lands and rides that it is almost impossible to do all the rides in just one day at Disneyland ! You need at least two full days for just Disneyland Park to experience everything!

Though with some planning, like using Disneyland Genie Plus strategies for Lightning Lane access and taking advantage of the rope drop Disneyland strategy, you might be able to sit on most of the popular rides.

Note: This article only covers the best rides in Disneyland Park. If you are planning to visit California Adventure Park as well, check out my article about the best and must-do rides at California Adventure , as most people plan to visit both parks on their trip to Disneyland.

1. Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance

  • Type of ride : Medium Thrill
  • Age group : All ages, appropriate for young kids that meet the height requirement
  • Height : 102 cm / 40-inch minimum
  • Location : Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge
  • Genie Plus accepted : No
  • Individual Lightning Lane purchase : Yes, the cost varies by day to use the faster lane

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is one of the most popular and best Disneyland rides! This ride has continued to draw huge crowds since its opening in 2019.

Star Wars: Galaxy's Edge in Disneyland

This ride is part of Star Wars: Galaxy’s Edge, an expansive themed area that brings the Star Wars universe to life. Rise of the Resistance is widely regarded as one of the most technologically advanced and immersive rides ever created.

This is the longest ride experience totaling around 15 minutes, and has three stages. The first stage is the queue area, which will make you feel like you are in a Resistance base on the planet Batuu and is filled with props, droids, and lifelike animatronics.

Once inside the ride, riders are briefed on their mission to join the Resistance and fight against the First Order. The second stage is the ride in the transport vehicle known as a “Resistance Intersystem Transport Ship” and is guided by BB-8 and other Star Wars characters.

Inside Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride at Disneyland

The third stage is the actual ride which uses advanced audio-visual effects, animatronics, synchronized motion, and realistic set designs making the experience incredibly immersive.

Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance offers an unforgettable and epic adventure for fans of the Star Wars franchise. It combines state-of-the-art technology, intricate storytelling, and stunning visuals to create an experience that truly transports you into the Star Wars universe.

Inside Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance ride at Disneyland

Every time we visit, the wait times for Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance is always an hour or more, sometimes 2 hours! This ride is still more popular than the new Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway!

I recommend doing this ride at night during the first showing of Fantasmic for shorter wait times. Also, Star Wars Land looks cooler at night with the lighting effects.

2. Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway

  • Age group : All ages
  • Height : All Heights
  • Location : Mickey’s Toontown
  • Genie Plus accepted : Yes

Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway is Disneyland’s newest and one of the most popular rides at the moment. The ride debuted in March 2023 and has been an instant hit.

Join Mickey, Minnie, and friends on this amazing ride through their fun and whacky cartoon world. This ride is similar in technology to Star Wars: Rise of the Resistance, and the trackless system allows for dynamic and unpredictable movements.

Runaway Railway Ride Car at Disneyland

The queue area for this ride transports you to a vibrant and colorful cartoon world. The queue is filled with charming details, playful interactive elements, and nods to classic Disney animation, setting the stage for the whimsy that lies ahead.

Once onboard the ride vehicle, you are taken on an unpredictable journey through various Mickey Mouse cartoon settings. The ride story follows Mickey and Minnie on a wild adventure as they head to a picnic and encounter unexpected surprises and mishaps along the way.

Inside Runaway Railway Ride at Disneyland

Without giving much away, I loved the music score, the fast pace of the ride, and the various changing cartoon scenes, but my favorite was the cars dancing to Daisy’s tunes!

All ages in our extended family loved the ride, and it was great to see the familiar Disney characters – Mickey, Minnie, Daisy, Donald, Goofy, and Pluto in their animated glory!

Inside Mickey Minnie's Runaway Railway Ride at Disneyland

Genie Plus can give you faster access to this ride. If you do not have Genie Plus, I recommend finishing this ride first thing in the morning at Disneyland park opening time , as the wait times can grow 1+ hours later in the day. But in my experience, after sitting in these newer rides first, the other older Disneyland rides seem ancient!

3. Tiana’s Bayou Adventure (Coming in 2024!)

Splash Mountain, a beloved classic water ride in Critter Country, closed its doors in May 2023. Splash Mountain had a huge 5-story drop in water at the end and was very popular and notorious for soaking the riders wet!

The Splash Mountain ride is being transformed and will reopen as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, featuring a story theme and characters from Disney’s popular ‘Princess and the frog’ movie.

Even though this new ride is not yet released, looking at how awesome Disneyland’s latest new rides like Rise of the Resistance and Mickey and Minnie’s Runaway Railway turned out, I already know that Tiana’s Bayou Adventure is going to be awesome too!

I’m sure this new ride is going to top the best Disneyland rides list, and I am reserving space for it here! Another exciting reason to visit Disneyland again in 2024!

4. Indiana Jones Adventure

  • Type of ride : High Thrill
  • Age group : All ages that meet the height requirement
  • Height : 117 cm / 46-inch minimum
  • Location : Adventureland

Indiana Jones Adventure continues to be one of the best thrill rides in Disneyland, even after the newer high-tech rides.

The queue area, which is designed to resemble a jungle expedition camp, is filled with intricate details, artifacts, and animatronic figures, setting the stage for the adventure that awaits.

For the ride, board an open-air jeep-like 12-seater vehicle and journey through treacherous temples, encountering animatronic figures, booby traps, and a thrilling escape finale from a rolling boulder.

The climax, where the jeep drops to escape a massive rolling boulder, is the highlight of this ride! The ride is a little rough at times and super fast! But in the end, you are ready to do it all over again!

5. Space Mountain / Hyperspace Mountain

  • Type of ride : High Thrill, dark
  • Location : Tomorrowland

Navigate your way through outer space in this high-speed indoor roller coaster shaped like a rocket ship!

Space Mountain continues to be a beloved and popular ride at Disneyland California, with its combination of speed, darkness, and the sense of venturing into the great unknown.

The ride queue area transports you to a futuristic spaceport, complete with space-themed props and visuals.

Space Mountain features a combination of sudden drops, sharp turns, and exhilarating twists, all taking place in a dark environment with immersive special effects. The lack of visibility adds an element of surprise and enhances the sense of speed and excitement.

For a limited time in May, for the Start Wars month, the Space Mountain ride is transformed into Hyperspace Mountain.

This makeover version combines the classic appeal of Space Mountain with the excitement and adventure of the Star Wars theme, providing an unforgettable experience for Star Wars fans.

7. Pirates of the Caribbean

  • Type of ride : Low Thrill
  • Location : New Orleans Square

Pirates of the Caribbean continues to be one of the best rides in Disneyland. It’s an iconic dark ride with pirates, battles, animatronics, and Jack Sparrow, immersing you in a thrilling Caribbean adventure.

You board a boat-like vessel that glides in the water. There are two small drops here, but it’s not a roller coaster, and you will not get wet, just splashed a bit if sitting in the front row or corner seats.

Pirates of the Caribbean ride entrance at Disneyland

In this ride, you navigate through a series of immersive scenes featuring pirates, battles, and cursed treasure. Animatronic figures, including Captain Jack Sparrow, bring the adventure to life.

Throughout the ride, you will encounter many scenes portraying pirates engaged in various activities. The scenes depict pillaged towns, pirate hideouts, and even a jail full of rowdy prisoners trying to escape, but the dog is holding the key!

My favorite part was the massive pirate ship engaged in an intense battle, with cannons firing and explosions illuminating the darkness. Overall a great classic ride and not to be missed!

8. Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run

The controls are responsive, allowing you to steer, shoot, and repair in real time. We had no clue what we were doing, and it was the bumpiest ride ever!

The ride incorporates advanced technology and realistic visuals to create an authentic and thrilling experience. Your team’s performance affects the outcome, making it a must-visit for Star Wars fans and adventure enthusiasts.

Overall, a great new ride in Disneyland for Star Wars fans and anyone else who wants to fly a spaceship!

9. Haunted Mansion / Haunted Mansion Holiday

  • Type of ride : Low Thrill, can be scary to young kids

Horror movie fans will love the Haunted Mansion ride. This eerie dark ride is through a haunted manor.

After the outdoor queueing area, you are taken to a dark Portrait chamber where you will see the walls and the portraits stretching around you! I thought that was super cool!

Then, you will board a slow-moving Doom Buggy and encounter ghostly apparitions, a séance room, a dancing ballroom, and singing tombstones.

The Grand Ballroom is a highlight of this ride, with the ghostly couples dancing around the centerpiece, which keeps changing every time I visit this ride.

Memorable characters like the Hatbox Ghost and Madame Leota add to the supernatural ambiance. Haunting audio and special effects complete the chilling experience.

Haunted Mansion Disneyland

At the end of the ride, you will see in the mirror that a ghost has hitchhiked in your ride, ready to follow you home! Creepy!

During the holiday season, the Haunted Mansion transforms into Haunted Mansion Holiday , combining the Haunted atmosphere with a festive twist inspired by Tim Burton’s “The Nightmare Before Christmas.” A unique blend of spooky and merry magic with Jack Skellington, Sally, and others.

Parents with young kids should note that even though the ride allows all ages, the ghosts, and the darkness can be scary to toddlers and younger kids.

In all of these best Disneyland rides below for toddlers, adults can sit with their children and have a great family time!

My kids are teens now, but they used to love these rides as kids. I remember running to Fantasyland as soon as we entered the park to stand in line for Peter Pan’s flight and then the Dumbo ride!

I recently visited Disneyland with my extended family and rode all of these family-friendly rides with my 4-year-old nephews, and it was so much fun!

Disneyland rides that are ok to miss

Disneyland has so many rides and attractions that you might not be able to do it all in your Disneyland itinerary, especially if you are spending only one or two days in Disneyland Park. Below are some rides that are ok to miss if you are short on time.

Casey Jr. Circus Train

Unless you have a huge fan of train rides in your group, I would skip this one in Fantasyland. This ride has the same scenes and views as the Storybook Land Canal boats ride from an elevated track.

The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh

This ride is way out in Critter Country, and unless you have a Winnie the Pooh fan in your group, you can skip this one. The ride is also dark and slow.

Mr. Toad’s Wild Ride

Kids might not be familiar with the characters and storyline of this ride, and it is ok to skip it. The ride itself is also slow and dark, like the other Fantasyland indoor rides.

Pinnochio’s Daring Journey

Another sit-and-watch type of ride in Fantasyland and is slow and dark. It can be skipped if short on time.

Snow White’s Enchanted Wish

Unless you or someone in your group are a huge fan of Snow White Princess or the Seven Dwarfs, it’s okay to skip this sit-and-watch type of dark ride in Fantasyland.

Tiki Room is not a ride but a musical show with animatronic birds, and it is ok to skip if short on time. On hot summer days, it is a cool respite from the heat to sit in the air-conditioned theatre with a dole whip treat.

Where to stay for Disneyland

We prefer staying within walking distance of Disneyland and California Adventure to avoid the hassle of parking and taking the tram, which saves us valuable time in the morning. This gives us more time to enjoy the rides early on.

Below are some of the best hotels near Disneyland :

For the ultimate convenience, Disney’s Grand Californian Hotel and Spa is the perfect choice, as it is a luxurious Disneyland Resort hotel located right inside California Adventure Park.

Disneyland Hotel is another luxury Disney Resort with a massive pool complex with monorail themed waterslides.

Another great option is Disney Paradise Pier Hotel , which is just across the street from the Grand Californian Hotel and also part of the Disneyland Resort hotels. It only takes 5 to 10 minutes of walking to reach Disney California Adventure from here.

If you’re looking for a mid-range hotel with a pool, Fairfield by Marriott Anaheim Resort on S Harbor Boulevard is a fantastic choice, and it’s just a 10-minute walk away.

Courtyard by Marriott Anaheim is a great mid-range choice for families and is highly popular for its mini waterpark called Surfside Waterpark. There is no waterpark in Disneyland park , so staying here will guarantee some splashing fun!

For the closest proximity to Disneyland, you can’t beat Best Western Plus Park Place Inn . It is literally across the street from the park and offers amenities such as a pool and complimentary breakfast.

Les Voyages de Pinocchio

When you wish upon a star...

Step into the "Italian" quarter of Fantasyland and follow Pinocchio on his fantastic adventure across wide, open seas and perilous encounters with shady characters...

Right next to Blanche-Neige et les Sept Nains , you find another classic "dark ride" leading you through a beloved Disney tale. Les Voyages de Pinocchio adopts a similar dark tone in several of its scenes, but has the benefit of Pinocchio's lively puppet show, the colours of Pleasure Island and the clockwork frenzy of Gepetto's workshop to overall create a more energetic and arguably more re-ridable experience.

Added to the original Fantasyland line-up as late as 1982, the attraction enjoys more impressive effects than its neighbour and, in Paris, a different dark ride system which appears to make your six-seater vehicle "swerve" around corners, as if rushing to escape all that is out to capture the innocence of Pinocchio.

Though not quite a "must-see" experience, as one of the park's secondary attractions Les Voyages de Pinocchio is an exciting and nostalgic delight and certainly the more rewarding of these two classics.

Les Voyages de Pinocchio

  • Les Voyages de Pinocchio is shorter than its Japanese and Californian cousins, but not exactly through the Imagineer's choice — French building regulations require the use of thicker concrete walls , rather than the thin stud walls used at the other parks. So, whilst the Paris attraction shares the same footprint , the actual space inside the building is slightly smaller.
  • This attraction was the first Disney attraction to make use of "holographic" technology, where the boys hold mirrors to their faces and then turn to reveal themselves as donkeys.
  • An effect often associated with the Haunted Mansions and Phantom Manor — Pepper's Ghost — is also used to depict the vanishing Blue Fairy, leaving only a scattering of (fibre optic!) fairydust on the floor.

The ride has 12 different scenes taking Pinocchio all the way from the puppet show to Pleasure Island and finally, back home

  • If you have a choice, try to sit in the front row of your ride vehicle for the best view of all the scenes, or the back row for a slightly elevated view.
  • Like its neighbour, some scenes inside can be a little dark and sinister for some very young children. However, they pass by very quickly and the overall tone is playful.
  • Features scenes based on the film with a darker tone which may frighten some very young children.
  • Transfer required. Must be accompanied in order to assist in transfer to the ride vehicles.

Based on the Star Wars films, Star Tours is one of the most fun rides in Disneyland. The technology allows for 54 different story sequences, enough to keep riders coming back again and again.

The basic tale is simple: A bumbling droid pilot accidentally takes a bunch of space tourists down the wrong tunnel at takeoff, jumps to light speed and careens through the universe before getting things under control again. You'll run into characters from many of the Star Wars films and travel through more than a few of its locales, all in quick succession. It all passes so quickly that even a devoted fan might have to ride a dozen times to catch it all.

What You Need to Know About the Star Tours Ride at Disneyland

For most visitors, Star Tours is a must-do ride — or at least ride it if you have time.

  • Location:  Star Tours is in Tomorrowland
  • Rating:  ★★★★★
  • Restrictions:  40 inches (102 cm). Regardless of height, children under age seven years must be accompanied by a person aged 14 years or older.
  • Ride Time:  4.5 minutes
  • Recommended for:  Families with teens and anyone who loves the Star Wars movies
  • Fun Factor:  High. Star Tours is  one of the best rides at Disneyland .
  • Wait Factor:  High. Use a  Fastpass to shorten your time in line . The Fastpass ticket machines are across from the Star Tours entrance, near Buzz Lightyear
  • Fear Factor:  Medium. Some scenes are exciting, but not too scary.
  • Herky-Jerky Factor:  Medium to high. This star-chasing ride is smoother than when it first opened, but Disney still says it's not for anyone a neck or back trouble, heart problems or for expectant mothers. The motion simulator moves smoothly but simulates drops and rolls that will shake you around.
  • Nausea Factor:  Medium to high. Take precautions or be prepared to spend part of the ride with your eyes closed. You can also ask a Cast Member to seat you in the middle, where there is less motion.
  • Seating:  This ride is a small motion simulator room. It has several rows, and every seat has a seatbelt.
  • Accessibility:  Contact a Cast Member at the entrance for boarding information. Guests have to transfer to the ride vehicle by themselves or with help from their companions. Some of the pre-show monitors display guest-activated captioning. Cast Members can help you with this, too. Service animals can't go on Star Tours.  More about visiting Disneyland in a wheelchair or ECV

How to Have More Fun

  • There's  lots of simulated danger  on Star Tours, and  it can be noisy .
  • If you wear prescription glasses , you can slip the 3D glasses over all but the largest frames.
  • The 3D glasses come in one size only  and are too big for a small child’s face. A simple solution is just don't wear them. Most kids don’t seem to mind that things get a little blurry without them - and they won’t be startled or scared by things that come flying toward them in the 3-D effect. Or try perching the glasses on the child’s nose, tilt them forward and rest the earpieces on top of their head.
  • Rider swap is available. It's for two adults with a kid or kids who don't ride. They can wait just once and get on as soon as the first adult returns. Tell the Cast Member in the loading area if you want to use that option.

You can  see all the Disneyland rides at a glance on the Disneyland ride sheet .

While you're thinking about rides, you should also  download the essential Disneyland apps (they're all free!) and  get some proven tips to minimize your Disneyland wait time .

When you wait in line for Star Tours, you may hear an overhead speaker paging Egroeg Sacul, which is George Lucas spelled backward.

You may also hear an announcement to move landspeeder THX 1138, another reference to George Lucas: It was the name of his first film, the license plate number in "American Graffiti", and the call sign of a stormtrooper in "Star Wars: A New Hope."

The flight simulator used to create this ride is the same one used to train airplane pilots.

For a more in-depth look into Star Wars, check out Star Wars Launch Bay in Tomorrowland .

Best Disneyland Rides 2024 – All 63 Rides RANKED By Frequent Visitor

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Which Disneyland ride is the the BEST ride in the park? Which ride ranks the lowest? Our Disneyland rides ranked list helps you decide which rides you should prioritize the most on your Disneyland vacation.

Disneyland actually has more attractions in both Disneyland Park and California Adventure than all four Walt Disney World parks combined! That is a lot of attractions to juggle so we're here to help you decide which rides you shouldn't miss and which ones are best left for your next trip.

At Mickey Visit we visit Disneyland at least once a week to keep you updated on the latest Disney news and tips. We have also been visiting Disneyland for many decades and have developed this list of the best rides and attractions based on our years covering the parks. There's a mix of nostalgia and what's new.

Get exclusive access to prices on hotel & tickets just for Mickey Visit subscribers. Don't miss our travel hacks newsletter!

In this planning guide:

Ranking Best Disneyland Rides Methodology

Let's get into the decision making that went behind our Disneyland ride ranking. We followed a pretty similar definition of ‘attraction' that Disneyland uses to list their rides.

We tried to come at this list from not just a purely nostalgic perspective, which can be challenging, and also take into account the amazing technical advances we've seen Disneyland make with new attractions while still honoring the classics.

When we get into the final 15 or so items on this best rides list it becomes such a matter of opinion on which ones are actually the “best”. Crowning a winner and top Disneyland ride is completely subjective but we hope that this list will guide you on what rides to prioritize as you make your own Disneyland itinerary .

Best Disneyland Rides RANKED!

Let's get into all the Disneyland rides RANKED from our least favorite to our top choices! This list combines both the attractions at Disneyland and Disney California Adventure. You can see a map of Disneyland Park here and a map of Disney California Adventure park here .

Adventure Thru Inner Space in Disneyland's Tomorrowland

"Suspended in the timelessness of inner space are the thoughtwaves of my first impressions. They will be our only source of contact once you have passed beyond the limits of normal MAG-NI-FI-CA-TION!"  Over the past year, the Lost Legends series at Theme Park Tourist has been dedicated to preserving the timeless tales of lost ride masterpieces for future generations. We've explored fan-favorites like 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea , Alien Encounter , Mr. Toad's Wild Ride , TOMB RAIDER: The Ride ,  the Peoplemover , Soarin' Over California , and so many more . All along we've asked for your comments and memories to help us save these attractions forever and explore their in-depth stories.

Now, we turn to a Tomorrowland favorite, and an almost-unbelievable journey down to the size of an atom. A classic dark ride that kick-started the intellectual wonder of a generation, Adventure Thru Inner Space  was an early precursor to the optimistic, inspirational, enigmatic dark rides that populated EPCOT Center when it opened. This once-headlining dark ride debuted brand new technologies still in use today, and is still remembered as an icon of Disneyland's most well-loved era: Tomorrowland 1967.

A stunning journey into the retro-wonders of atomic energy and structure, this educational dark ride left riders speechless. So what did guests find in the magnificent reaches of the microscopic world? We're about to find out. Prepare for magnification!

Old Tomorrowland (1955 – 1959)

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Image: Disney

So many of our Lost Legends entries begin here, in the Tomorrowland guests encountered when Disneyland first opened in 1955. There’s a good reason that the stories of so many classics are rooted in this land at this time: because it was a rare disappointment.

Like Walt himself, so many of Disney’s fans look to the past as an idealized, romantic time when things were the way they ought to have stayed. Very few people would say, though, that Tomorrowland was ready to be one of Disneyland’s anchor areas in 1955.

In fact, that Tomorrowland was so far behind schedule during the park’s construction, Walt allegedly ordered that construction on the east side of the park stop entirely. He intended to divert funds from what would be Tomorrowland to the park’s other themed realms. Once Disneyland was on its way, he could reinvest in a Phase II that would open an impressive Tomorrowland more along the lines of the grand display of futurism he envisioned.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

But apparently, in the autumn before the park’s summer opening, he relented. Walt announced that construction should go ahead on Tomorrowland and that, despite his hopes, the land would simply be a corporate showcase; a “World’s Fair” where American companies could display their innovations and peddle their products to the growing middle class.

This Tomorrowland featured such riveting displays as the Kaiser Aluminum Hall of Fame, the Crane Bathroom of Tomorrow, and the Dutch Boy Paint Color Gallery. One of Disney’s only holdouts in the land was a walkthrough display re-using the sets from 1954’s 20,000 Leagues Under the Sea .

Monsanto’s miracle (1957)

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

One of the most memorable, though, was the Monsanto House of the Future , which opened in 1957. The strange, cantilevered, white plastic house built just off the park’s Hub was a veritable icon of Tomorrowland at the time, and a coup for the Monsanto Company.

After all, guests who passed through the home of the future got the chance to view ultra-modern furniture comprised entirely of synthetic materials thanks to Monsanto’s groundbreaking efforts, or the inconceivable flat TV suspended right on the wall of the living room!

The most astounding encounter, though, had to be inside the “Atoms for Living” kitchen, featuring a microwave oven. Sincerely the stuff of scientific progress, the countertop microwave oven wouldn’t be commercially available for a full decade, leaving audiences of the 1950s stunned.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

If you asked Imagineers in 1955, they’d tell you that this Tomorrowland and the Monsanto House of the Future were meant to predict the year 1986 – immeasurably far away. (Consider, for example, if today’s Tomorrowland tried to accurately, scientifically predict how the world would look in 2047.) While it might’ve emulated a future as seen from the 1950s, its soaring rocket ships, waving flags, and squared architecture at least gave visitors a sense of what would become Tomorrowland’s core concepts.

Innovating and adding (1959 – 1966)

Still, Walt was never content with this half-hearted display of corporate power and assured his designers that Tomorrowland was not yet complete. His dedication for the land signaled his vision; he called for the land to be “ a vista into a world of wondrous ideas, signifying Man's achievements... A step into the future, with predictions of constructed things to come. Tomorrow offers new frontiers in science, adventure and ideals. The Atomic Age, the challenge of Outer Space and the hope for a peaceful, unified world .”

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Particularly, it was dreams of an Atomic Age and a Space Age that drove Walt’s narrative. An episode of the Disneyland television series hosted by Walt entitled “ Our Friend the Atom ” aired on January 23, 1957. Nuclear power was the way of the future, and an emerging area of interest with the public. Fittingly, Walt had a plan: “We made plans to build an exhibit at Disneyland to show you atomic energy in action.”

However, the plans to add an atomic attraction to Disneyland fell through due, in large part, to another wild expansion meant to bring Tomorrowland up to snuff.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

In 1959, the park ceremoniously opened three brand new rides: the Matterhorn Bobsleds (the first tubular steel tracked roller coaster), the Submarine Voyage (the world’s largest peacetime submarine fleet), and the Disney-ALWEG Monorail (the first daily-operating monorail system in the Western hemisphere). So grand were these new and groundbreaking rides, they each earned a new designation, requiring the most expensive and limited ride ticket: an E-Ticket.

So just four years after the park opened, Tomorrowland had doubled in size and scope and was well on its way to being the Tomorrowland Walt always hoped for.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

Image: disneycartography.com

As the Cold War continued and the Cuban Missile Crisis loomed, the role of atomic power grew and an educational exhibit at Disneyland seemed all the more pressing. Unfortunately, Walt and company were focused elsewhere: the 1964-65 World’s Fair. Designers were working overtime to prepare for the Fair, where Disney had been contracted to provide no less than four headlining attractions for major corporations. Those four attractions would evolve into Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln, “it’s a small world,” Carousel of Progress, and the Peoplemover.

And as the Fair closed in 1965, designers were buoyed by the tremendous innovation they’d used to bring those four attractions to life. So impressive were their newest technologies, they warranted a place in Tomorrowland back at Disneyland.

fantastic voyage ride disneyland

But even a decade after the park opened, Tomorrowland was faltering. The sincere attempt at forecasting the future from 1955 had been inspiring, but it couldn’t hold up. None of the corporate showcases left in Tomorrowland felt convincingly futuristic by the mid-60s. Microwave ovens were the stuff of science fact , not of futurism, and their place in the Monsanto House of the Future was an eye-rolling reminder of a different time. So if Imagineers wanted Tomorrowland to sincerely represent cutting-edge technologies, everything except the 1959 expansion would need a floor-to-ceiling rebuild from scratch. A great, big, beautiful Tomorrowland was on the way.

Just your friendly neighborhood fan of tropical hideaways, Victorian boardwalks, mid-century tomorrows, ancient temples, and cursed forests! In between dreaming of Dole Whips, I'm a museum experience developer. I'm also the researcher behind Theme Park Tourist's  Legend Library   – filled with stories of  Lost Legends , Modern Marvels , Declassified Disasters , and more.

I loved Adventure Thru Inner Space and was sad when I took my nephews that it was gone. We loved Star Tours, but shrinking to explore the snowflake was educational and fun! I wish they would bring it back. If anything has become apparent during the pandemic, science knowledge is severely lacking in the younger generation. Making science fun can only help.

I remember changing my son’s diaper on this ride. It was dark and private. The cars had a very generous floor area and no seat belts, as I remember. The ride was long enough to complete the messiest diaper change, and there was a big trash can at the end of the ride. The atoms were cool, too!

I remember standing in line for the Monsanto ride there was this big prop of all miniaturized people loaded into a hypodermic needle ready to be shot inside of a human body , and that big giant eyeball looking down upon you peering from a once on the ride you're traveling through cells I remember the big heartbeat as you travel to the heart wow that was a long time ago

This was one of my favorites as a kid. It's still would be today. I was sad when it finally went away. Good stuff!

What will become of the space when they move Star Tours to Star Wars Land?
