Southport Comedy Festival 2023: Your full guide to every comedian and every show
Some of the best comedians in Britain are bringing a smile to Southport’s face, as they head to town for the 12th Southport Comedy Festival.
The popular annual event, in association with Halliwell Jones BMW, takes place from Friday 29th September 2023 until Sunday 15th October 2023 for 17 fun-filled days of laughter.
Alongside returning favourites Jason Byrne, Paul Sinha, Rich Hall, Gary Delaney, Nina Gilligan and Jimeoin this star-studded festival welcomes TV comedians Tom Davis, Seann Walsh, Clinton Baptiste, Simon Brodkin, Jen Brister, Mark Steel, Emmanuel Sonubi and Mark Nelson.
The entire festival will be staged for a third year in a giant luxury heated and seated marquee courtesy of Elite Marquees in Victoria Park, home of the world-renowned Southport Flower Show.
The festival is supporting the stars of tomorrow with the return of the Southport New Comedian of the Year Competition, sponsored by Dragon Soop.
The festival is proud to support charity fundraising. This year we will be ‘raising money while raising a smile’ with special charity events planned for two great local charities Community Link Foundation and Southport Flower Show.

In fact, it’s fair to say that her cup is very much half empty and she’s making no attempt to fill it. Can Jen work against her natural instincts and finally see the light? The American stand-up is best known for his Netflix specials and co-host of ‘Your Mom’s House’ podcast alongside his wife and fellow comedian Christina Pazsitzky.
The comedian will hit the road with his ‘Jibber Jabber Jamboree’ Tour in October 2023 through to March 2024.
The new run of shows will follow his hugely successful previous ‘Humournoid’ Tour as well as mark his 21st solo stand-up tour to date.
Other notable comedy tours to look out for next year include Russell Howard , Tom Allen , Maisie Adam and Russell Kane . Munya Chawawa will also embark on his much-anticipated debut headline tour, with Seann Walsh and Babatunde Aleshe both hitting the road fresh from the I’m A Celeb jungle.
Looking even further ahead and following a sell-out tour in 2022, Romesh Ranganathan is set to return with a brand-new show examining the human condition in 2024.

John Robins announces biggest ever tour for 2023
Thursday 8th December 2022, 11:39am
- John Robins will tour the UK between September and December 2023 with the stand-up show Howl
- Tickets are on sale now from sites including Ticketmaster
- He says: "If you've seen me before you know the drill, if you haven't hold on to your butts"
John Robins is to tour the UK in 2023 with his stand-up show Howl .
It will be his biggest tour to date. He will play cities including Cardiff, Birmingham, Portsmouth, Glasgow, Newcastle and Exeter from September 2023 , with the tour set to finish at the Eventim Apollo on 1st December 2023 .
Tickets go on sale at 10am on Friday 9th December 2022. Ticketmaster
Robins has sent an introduction to the show out to the press. It says:
Holy Shit! Johnny JR is hauling his old bag 'o bones back on the road. That's right folks, 50 MILLION podcast downloads and I daresay the odd Perrier Award knocking about the place isn't enough to hold this firebrand away from dropping truth bombs left right and centre. Well, that's one way of looking at it. Another is that the four years since my last tour left me with a hell of a lot of staring time, and if I don't start screaming in regional arts centres soon then I may just burst. The show I am touring is called Howl , and feels pretty well summed up by these kind words about previous outings of mine: "Robins exploits his misery for every single possible laugh - transforming his pain into one long existential comic howl against the human condition" The Scotsman "A particularly startling brand of funny, this level of self-exposure - because it's taboo, particularly for a man, to be this distraught in public, far less while encouraging people to laugh about it" The Guardian If I thought lockdown was hard, then this last year has been an absolute pile of shit, I drove around the UK in a Kia Sportage in an attempt to get away from everything. Did it work? Did it fuck. This show isn't about mental health, this show is mental health. In all it's rage, joy, tears, anxiety and humour. Isn't that what comedy is? There's even a bit where I'm pretty scathing of the disingenuous platitudes of the modern wellness industry. "Hot dang! Get me a thousand tickets!" If you've seen me before you know the drill, if you haven't hold on to your butts. "Has this been written by some jackass American podcaster John? Someone who puts their feet on the table in interviews and vapes a lot?" No I'm just fooling with you [hides vape] This show won't end with something glib and preachy. Nor anything particularly uplifting. Nothing will be set to music. There will be both bangs and whimpers, it will end on a good old-fashioned laugh. That's my motto. I'm also trying to edit out all the bits about golf if that sweetens the deal?

Coming soon to a theater near you: some of the funniest comedians working today. A number of major stars are heading on comedy tours this fall, including one who's doing so for the first time in years and another who's touring for the first time period. These are the comedy tours you won’t want to miss in the coming months.
Is 2023 the year of the Tuckeraissance? After appearing in his first movie in years (Ben Affleck's "Air"), Chris Tucker announced what Live Nation noted was the comic’s first major North American tour in over a decade. His "The Legend Tour" is heading to 30 cities this fall and recently kicked off in Charleston, South Carolina. "I started my career doing stand-up in comedy clubs and it's stand-up comedy that prepared me for all of my movie roles," Tucker said. "I'm looking forward to getting back to my roots." The tour will run through Jan. 12.
He's here, he's there, he's everywhere, including a theater near you this fall. Emmy-winning "Ted Lasso" star Brett Goldstein is embarking on his very first stand-up tour . The actor's "The Second Best Night of Your Life Tour" will be in Denver on Oct. 5 before moving to Boston, Minneapolis, and more cities into December. Place your bets on how many words he gets out before dropping his first F-bomb.

You're sure to have a good trip to see Eric André on tour this fall. The star of "The Eric Andre Show" is traveling the country on his "Eric André Explosion Tour," which recently kicked off in Los Angeles. He has a ton of upcoming dates scheduled, including in Kansas City, Chicago, Dallas, and Detroit. "Bring your ranch, your nightmares, and all your friends," the comedian said .
You can catch the popular British comedian Eddie Izzard on her " Remix Tour ," which has shows scheduled throughout the fall in the U.S. and heads to the U.K. in November. "I will be remixing the stand-up that I like the most from the first 35 years of my career," Izzard explained .
Make it a very Hubie Halloween season with Adam Sandler. The comedian recently announced a fall tour he’s calling the "I Missed You Tour," which will stop by 25 cities. "Let's have some fun," he posted on Instagram . He's kicking off the tour on Oct. 12 in Vancouver before heading to Seattle, Portland, Nampa, Spokane, and more locations around the country into December. Get ready for more than 20 crazy nights.
Sometimes two comedians are better than one, so Jerry Seinfeld and Jim Gaffigan are heading on tour together. "Jim and I met doing 'Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee' and have been talking about doing this for years," Seinfeld said . "We finally made the schedules work out." Gaffigan, meanwhile, joked he's "so excited to help out this unknown up and upcoming comedian who many may have never heard of." After November shows in San Francisco and Inglewood, the pair will also head to Chicago and St. Louis.
Speaking of comedy duos, you can't get much better than Tina Fey and Amy Poehler, who announced their first-ever comedy tour together in February. Their "Restless Leg Tour" is continuing into the fall with shows scheduled for Cleveland, Denver, Austin, and more cities into December.
Have you seen Chelsea lately? If not, check out the schedule for her ongoing " Little Big Bitch Tour ," which has shows set throughout the fall in New York, California, and plenty of cities in between.
A certain tall child is also headed on tour this fall with some good friends. John Mulaney will be performing shows with his friend Pete Davidson, who has his own solo tour dates scheduled as well, in October and November. But for some shows, Mulaney’s “John & Pete” show will be “Jon & John,” as Mulaney has a few performances scheduled with former “Daily Show” host Jon Stewart in New York and California. How’s that for a deal: two Jo(h)ns for the price of one?

NEWS... BUT NOT AS YOU KNOW IT
Julian Clary announced as host of 2024 British LGBT Awards
Share this with
Julian Clary will be hosting the 2024 British LGBT Awards, Metro.co.uk can exclusively reveal.
The 64-year-old comedy legend will be taking to the stage for the 10th anniversary of the awards on June 21 in London .
He will be following in the footsteps of Alan Carr, Graham Norton and Rylan Clark , handing out prizes at Britain’s biggest LGBT+ awards show after his emotional appearance at last year’s event.
Clary left the audience in tatters when he presented a posthumous award to the late Paul O’Grady’s husband Andre Portasio, delivering a poignant speech for his friend which sparked a two-minute long standing ovation.
Having trailblazed for the LGBT+ community in the 1980s via his outrageous stand-up comedy, national treasure Julian has remained a British TV regular ever since.
The star-studded event will honour the celebrities, campaigners, businesses and community activists who have helped advance the fight for LGBT+ rights over the past year.
Previous award winners include Sir Elton John, Sir Ian McKellen, Kylie Minogue, Lady Gaga and Jess Glynne.
In 2018, HRH Prince WIlliam was recognised with the International Ally award for his support of LGBT+ charities.
Last year, Dean McCulloghhosted the awards, and presented prizes to the likes of Paloma Faith for her advocacy work, with Erasure singer Andy Bell scooping the lifetime award and Katherine Ryan crowned the year’s biggest celebrity ally.
The 2024 host said he was ‘honoured’ to be tasked with running the awards show.
‘I am delighted to be announced as host of the 2024 British LGBT Awards,’ Clary said.
‘The British LGBT Awards remain one of the most important and recognisable celebrations in the LGBT+ calendar and the 10th anniversary will be a huge celebration.
‘I am so excited to recognise not only the household celebrity names, but those working tirelessly behind the scenes to advance LGBT+ rights on a daily basis.
‘As a former British LGBT Award winner, I am honoured to host the event and cannot wait to see everyone on June 21st.’
Sarah Garrett MBE, British LGBT+ Awards founder, said: ‘We are delighted to confirm the legendary Julian Clary as host of the 2024 British LGBT Awards for our 10th anniversary celebration.
‘As a member of the LGBT+ community in the public eye for more than four decades, Julian is the perfect host for such a momentous occasion.
‘He brings the perfect blend of humour, entertainment, experience and style to the awards and I have no doubt he will be a smash hit with our audience.
‘The British LGBT Awards will once more recognise the celebrity icons, trailblazers, allies and innovators of the LGBT+ community as well as those driving positive change in business and society.

Lucky Hank marks its territory as one of 2023's most compelling comedy series. The series stars Bob Odenkirk as Hank Devereaux, a disillusioned English professor navigating the absurdities of academic life and a mid-life crisis with equal parts cynicism and humor. Set against the backdrop of a college campus, Hank's journey is both a critique of the ivory tower and a personal quest for meaning in a seemingly indifferent universe.
What sets Lucky Hank apart is its ability to blend humor with heart, turning what could have been a niche comedy about academia into a universally appealing exploration of life's larger questions.
The series excels in its sharp wit and insightful commentary, drawing viewers into Hank's world—a place where intellectual pretensions and existential angst collide. Odenkirk's portrayal of Hank is a masterclass in balancing comedy with moments of profound introspection , making Lucky Hank not just a show about an academic's unraveling but a relatable story of seeking purpose. Each episode follows Charlie in a classic case-of-the-week format as she travels across the country in her old Plymouth Barracuda, unraveling mysteries with her lie-detection skill as her guide.
The show's brilliance lies not just in its intriguing premise but in its execution, blending elements of mystery, humor, and drama against the backdrop of America's diverse landscape. Natasha Lyonne's charismatic performance, coupled with Johnson's sharp writing , delivers a series that's both engaging and refreshingly original. Poker Face stands out for its clever storytelling, memorable characters, and protagonist who brings a new dimension to the detective genre, making it a must-watch in 2023.
Jury Duty (2023 - )
If the office was one giant elaborate prank.
Jury Duty is a comedy/documentary series created for Amazon Freevee that explores the inner workings of the American Judicial system - with a twist. The show follows a unique format where a fake court case is created, with the entire experience controlled from inside and outside of the courtroom, and everyone is in on it except for a single juror. The show explores the fictional case through the perspective of the singular outlying juror.
Cast Mekki Leeper, Edy Modica, Ishmel Sahid, Ronald Gladden, James Marsden
Release Date April 7, 2023
Streaming Service(s) Amazon Freevee
Directors Jake Szymanski
Jury Duty emerges as one of 2023's most innovative comedy TV shows, blending reality television's unpredictability with sitcom humor in a groundbreaking format. Created by Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, the American series takes viewers on an unparalleled journey into the US legal system, albeit with a twist: the entire jury trial is a hoax. Central to this elaborate ruse is Ronald Gladden, a solar contractor from San Diego, who believes his participation is genuine, while in reality, he's surrounded by actors.
The show, co-starring James Marsden playing an exaggerated version of himself and an ensemble cast, expertly navigates the fine line between ethical concerns and entertainment, transforming what could have been a questionable venture into a hilariously affirming exploration of human nature and justice . Jury Duty excels in its unique premise, reminiscent of The Office set within a courtroom, proving to be an unexpected gem in comedy television.
It's Always Sunny In Philadelphia, Season 16 (2005 - )
Paddy's pub is as funny and ridiculous as ever, it's always sunny in philadelphia.
Release Date August 4, 2005
Cast Danny DeVito, Rob McElhenney, Kaitlin Olson, Glenn Howerton, Charlie Day
Genres Comedy
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 16 aired in 2023, continuing its run as one of the longest-running American sitcoms of all time . The show is still as funny and ridiculous as ever , with the gang getting themselves into some hilarious situations — from Dennis' furious arguments with his car company to a makeshift bowling league with an array of wacky characters. As always, the performances from the entire ensemble cast were solid. The show has often had celebrity cameos, but season 16 starred some huge names outside the main cast, including Aaron Paul and Bryan Cranston.
It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia had a beautifully funny run in 2023, and its biggest disappointment was that season 16 only had eight episodes. Season 16 would have been a great opportunity for the show to return to the 10-episode format it regularly used from season 8 onward. Despite its limited episode numbers, the show still maintained its consistent standard of storytelling in 2023 , and it built the excitement for another outing by leaving questions for It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia season 17 to answer.
Beef (2023 - )
Road rage gets serious (sort of).
Cast Patti Yasutake, Young Mazino, David Choe, Joseph Lee, Ali Wong, Steven Yeun
In 2023, Netflix introduced a brand-new comedy: Beef. Boasting an incredible cast, Beef follows Danny (Steven Yeun) and Amy (Ali Wong), who end up in a complex feud after they cross paths in a road rage incident. The show earned 13 nominations for an Emmy in 2023, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology series. A majority of the cast were also recognized for their performances, a testament to the series' high quality.
Wong's portrayal of Amy as a complex and flawed character is especially noteworthy. Although Amy is initially difficult to root for, the show's dark comedy and chaotic timeline allow her to grow by the ending of Beef. Beef differs from other comedies in that it contains many thriller elements , making it a wild ride all around.
The Great, Season 3 (2020 - 2023)
Russia's most dysfunctional couple steals the show.
Release Date May 15, 2020
Cast Bayo Gbadamosi, Sebastian de Souza, Richard Pyros, Elle Fanning, Nicholas Hoult, Belinda Bromilow, Gwilym Lee, Douglas Hodge, Adam Godley, Phoebe Fox, Sacha Dhawan, Charity Wakefield
Genres Biography, Drama, Comedy
2023 saw The Great season 3 hit screens, and despite The Great being canceled by Hulu shortly after, it garnered praise across all areas — but especially for its characterization and costuming. It even received a 100% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes . The return of Elle Fanning as Empress Catherine II and Nicholas Hoult as Emperor Peter III in The Great season 3 saw the two stars nominated for Primetime Emmys, which made a lot of sense considering their dry but hilarious portrayals.
The s eries' strength in blending historical drama with comedic brilliance shone through , with strong performances accompanied by emotionally powerful and gripping storylines. This unique mix of humor, drama, and visually stunning settings, along with a witty script, ensured The Great landed among 2023's best comedy shows, leaving a lasting impact on its audience and setting a high bar for historical comedies.
Platonic (2023 - )
Byrne and rogen reunite for a witty romp.
Release Date May 24, 2023
Cast Andrew Lopez, Tre Hale, Rose Byrne, Seth Rogen, Carla Gallo, Luke Macfarlane
Not everyone views Seth Rogen as a romantic comedy lead, but his performance in Platonic is a reminder of how well he can play these roles. Rogen's chemistry with Rose Byrne is just as strong as it was in the Bad Neighbors films, but their new characters are very different. While the series asks the same question as When Harry Met Sally — whether straight men and women can ever be friends — Platonic takes a new angle and focuses on the core friendship between the pair, regardless of the physical aspects of their relationship.
Platonic 's writers deserve praise for this characterization, as their dialogue takes the comedy to new levels. In addition to the show's witty dialogue, Platonic has some great performances from supporting characters, including Vinny Thomas and Tre Hale. The Apple TV show's first season definitely breathed new life into the rom-com genre. It's one of 2023's best comedy shows, but unfortunately, there has yet to be any confirmation of Platonic season 2.
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Season 5 (2017 - 2023)
Redefining female comedians for the better, the marvelous mrs. maisel.
Release Date March 17, 2017
Cast Caroline Aaron, Alex Borstein, Tony Shalhoub, Rachel Brosnahan, Marin Hinkle, Michael Zegen, Kevin Pollak, Jane Lynch
The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel came to an end in 2023 with season 5, with Midge (Rachel Brosnahan) finally finding major success in comedy after years of fighting for it. The final outing really leaned into the nostalgic feel that the show has pushed since its pilot, and the farewell it received was absolutely the one it deserved. While there are plenty of great elements, Midge and Susie's (Alex Borstein) friendship is one of the reasons why The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel is one of the funniest comedies of 2023.
Considering she has had more than one romantic interest, season 5 really cemented the duo to the point that Midge's men became relatively forgettable.
Borstein and Brosnahan's on-screen chemistry and respective character development allowed them to bounce off one another effortlessly, and both of their performances have been stellar throughout the show's run. Considering she has had more than one romantic interest, season 5 really cemented the duo to the point that Midge's men became relatively forgettable. While The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel season 5 may not be the best season of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, it was a great way to bring the Amazon Prime Video TV show to an end, tying up many loose ends as it went.
Ted Lasso, Season 3 (2020 - 2023)
The apple tv show's ending stuck the landing.
Release Date August 14, 2020
Cast Toheeb Jimoh, Phil Dunster, James Lance, Jeremy Swift, Brett Goldstein, Brendan Hunt, Hannah Waddingham, Nick Mohammed, Juno Temple, Jason Sudeikis
Genres Drama, Comedy, sport
Ted Lasso is another popular comedy that came to an end in 2023, finishing with season 3 on Apple TV. Ted Lasso gained a cult following during its relatively short run, but unlike some shows, the writers knew when to bring the story to a close. Even with Ted (Jason Sudeikis) deciding to return to the United States to be closer to his son, season 3 managed to maintain the show's high comedic standards. It also balanced comedy and more heartfelt moments well .
Season 3's most impactful moments came from its supporting characters instead of its protagonist. Its most notable performances were from Hannah Waddingham as Rebecca Welton and Juno Temple as Keeley Jones, whose on-screen chemistry could obliterate the Bechdel test in the blink of an eye. While it was known from the beginning that Ted would eventually leave, this didn't stop his departure from being emotional and heart-wrenching. Although the future of AFC Richmond is unknown, there are hopes that there will be a Ted Lasso spinoff in the future.
The Bear, Season 2 (2022 - )
The restaurant business has never been so funny.
Release Date June 23, 2022
Cast Lionel Boyce, Liza Coln-Zayas, Oliver Platt, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Ayo Edebiri, Jeremy Allen White, Abby Elliott
The Bear was renewed for season 3 in November 2023, which was no surprise considering how successful season 2 was earlier in the year. The Bear season 2 shook up the show's format, sending its supporting characters off into the world and apart from one another. While this could have caused a decline in its quality, The Bear managed to pull this off beautifully and used this opportunity to really double down on the show's themes , especially the glorification of labor and how that impacts each character's personal struggles.
The Bear 's writing is praiseworthy, especially when it comes to its excellent characterization and dialogue, which is down-to-earth and relatable even during the show's darker moments. While there have been some funnier shows in 2023, The Bear deserves the acclaim it has seen so far. With any luck, The Bear will continue to outdo itself with season 3.
Shrinking (2023 - )
A realistic and upfront comedy.
Release Date January 27, 2023
Cast Michael Urie, Jessica Williams, Harrison Ford, Christa Miller, Jason Segel
Another release from Apple TV, Shrinking features realistic and upfront humor that cements it as one of the best comedy TV shows of 2023 . Its cast includes the likes of Jason Segel and acting legend Harrison Ford, and the back-and-forth between their characters offers a fun and fascinating presentation of a friendship with a significant age gap. It's worth noting that Ford's performance is funny while still being subtle, which is surprising considering this isn't the actor's typical genre.
The show's strength lies in its ability to tackle significant themes like grief and healing with a light-hearted approach, making it relatable. The chemistry among the cast, coupled with sharp writing, elevates the series beyond typical sitcom territory, promising more layers and depth in future seasons. Despite having only one season so far, there is hope that Shrinking season 2 will be able to match the hype of its predecessor.
What We Do In The Shadows, Season 5 (2019 - 2024)
The show remains fresh after multiple seasons, what we do in the shadows.
Release Date March 27, 2019
Cast Matt Berry, Doug Jones, Harvey Guillen, Natasia Demetriou, Mark Proksch, Kayvan Novak, Kristen Schaal
Genres Comedy, Horror, Fantasy
What We Do in the Shadows reached season 5 in 2023, and despite the show now being deep into some long-running storylines, it continues to approach each season with a fresh spin. While focusing on a group of immortalized, set-in-their-ways characters could have stifled the creativity of its writers, the show has yet to burn itself out and has many rewatchable qualities . Although it is set in the same universe as the Taika Waititi film of the same name, the television show holds its own and is arguably just as good — if not better — than its source.
With each episode, Laszlo (Matt Berry), Nandor (Kayvan Novak), Nadja (Natasia Demetriou), Colin Robinson (Mark Proksch), and Guillermo (Harvey Guillén) bring hilarious moments to the screen, which have resulted in some of What We Do in the Shadows' funniest quotes . Given the continued success of season 5, there is no reason to believe that What We Do in the Shadows season 6 won't continue to gain praise.
Scott Pilgrim Takes Off (2023)
The cult film: remixed, scott pilgrim takes off.
Release Date November 17, 2023
Cast Brandon Routh, Kieran Culkin, Alison Pill, Aubrey Plaza, Anna Kendrick, Jason Schwartzman, Michael Cera, Satya Bhabha, Brie Larson, Mary Elizabeth Winstead
Genres Animation, Comedy, Action, Adventure
Scott Pilgrim vs. the World was originally released in 2010, and 13 years later, the original cast returned for Scott Pilgrim Takes Off. Written by the author of the comics, Bryan Lee O'Malley, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off is an alternative retelling of the original story from the film and graphic novels. In a sudden twist, Scott (Michael Cera) dies at the hands of Ramona's (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) first evil ex, Matthew Patel (Satya Bhabha), which sets off a brand-new chain of events and how each character's life changes after losing him.
This was a risky move, and it could have been seen as lazy to recycle an already-famous storyline. However, Scott Pilgrim Takes Off absolutely nails it. The new animation is different enough from the film that it feels like a brand-new experience while still allowing nostalgia for longtime fans of the franchise. However, where Scott Pilgrim Takes Off truly improves upon Scott Pilgrim vs. the World is in its character development. Allowing characters such as Lucas Lee (Chris Evans), who had minimal dialogue and appearances in the film, to grow and expand made the world more complex and detailed.

In the vibrant world of stand-up comedy, our list of the best British comedians of 2024 promises to tickle your funny bone! This list is built on the criteria of comedic talent, originality, consistency, as well as the impact and influence of these comedians on the industry. The point of this list is to celebrate the outstanding talents who have thrilled us so far in 2024, while also giving comedy fans an opportunity to rank their favourites. Spotlighting the real stalwarts of humour, the list features performers like the charismatic Greg Davies, the Welsh comedian admired for his candid storytelling. Jack Whitehall, an English fan favorite, is renowned for his posh persona and bold observational comedy. Sara Pascoe, with her clever wit and feminist undertones, offers a refreshing perspective in the comedy industry. There's also Romesh Ranganathan, a comedian who combines his British and Tamil heritage to create unique culturally insightful comedy. Don't forget James Acaster, whose surreal and quirky humour never fails to get audiences laughing out loud, and Bridget Christie who's known for her politically charged comedy that blends hilarity with sharp social commentaries.
While this is just a taste of our star-studded list, remember that the successful comedians from the UK wouldn't be here without their fans. These performers have bonded us through laughter, now it's your turn to show your love for them.
So, comedy aficionados, it's time to make your choice count! Participate by voting for your favorite British comedian of 2024; propel them up the list and help us celebrate their comedic genius. Live Comedy coming to Liverpool venues in 2023
Liverpool’s been called a capital of comedy and has certainly punched above its weight when it comes to giving the world funnymen and women.
So it’s perhaps no surprise we love having a laugh – and that comedians from across the country – and beyond – bring their live shows to the city’s many venues.
Along with bespoke comedy hot spots like Laughterhouse, Hot Water Comedy Club and Liverpool Comedy Club, star names and rising talents also perform at mainstream locations like the Philharmonic Hall, Epstein Theatre, Royal Court Studio and M&S Bank Arena.
The next 12 months are no exception, and comedy fans are in for a treat with a host of names heading for the city with their latest live stand-up shows.
Here’s who you can catch where during 2023.
Liverpool Empire
Russell Howard
As we reel from one global crisis to another, why not join comedian Russell Howard (the ‘uplifting comedy king’) as he puts the world to rights in his own unique way over three nights at the Liverpool Empire.
Howard’s latest Liverpool visit is part of a wider UK tour with his new stand-up show.
Frankie Boyle
Frankie Boyle brings his new show Lap of Shame to the Empire for one night only.
Buy a ticket, because by the time he arrives the currency will be worthless, and you and your neighbours part of a struggling militia that could probably use a few laughs.
Warning (if you need it): The show will include strong language.
Philharmonic Hall
John Richardson: The Knitwit
January 12-13.
Fans of the diffident comedian have had to wait to see him – this show was postponed from November, but such is Richardson’s popularity that demand means he’s also now playing an extra date.
Will the recycling be put out on the right day? Who is going to smooth over the top of the margarine? And how many lights are on upstairs when everyone is downstairs? Watch Richardson pretend these aren’t his main concerns as he heads out on tour.
Harry Hill: Pedigree Fun!
Harry Hill is back with new jokes in an all-singing, all-dancing one man spectacular which he’s promised will be a ‘very silly show’.
The Liverpool audience will meet Hill’s new baby elephant Sarah and Ian the information worm, while the doctor-turned-comedian will also be joined by his famous sidekick, Stouffer the Cat.
Stewart Lee: Basic Lee
February 11.
After decades of “high concept shows involving overarched interlinked narratives, massive sets and enormous comedy props”, Stewart Lee enters the post-pandemic world in streamlined stand-up mode.
Expect one man, one mic – and one mic in the wings in case the one on stage breaks! Pure, simple, classic, basic Lee. Apparently.
Babatunde Aleshe: Babahood
March 24 (music room).
Comedian – and multi award-winning star of Celebrity Gogglebox – Babatunde Aleshe (pictured) talks family and fatherhood in what is a highly-anticipated debut tour.
If you’ve seen him on TV (Jonathan Ross’s Comedy Club, Mo Gilligan’s Black, British and Funny) now’s the chance to see Aleshe in the flesh too. But only if you’ve already got a ticket as his Music Room show is already a sell-out.
Also at the Liverpool Playhouse on October 7.
Sara Pascoe: Success Story
Pascoe decided at 14 that she wanted to be famous and since then she has auditioned for Barrymore, scared Pete Burns and ruined Hugh Grant’s birthday. But look at her now!
The comedian, writer and actor wrote and starred in the recent BBC2 sitcom Out of Her Mind, and when she’s not writing best-selling books and creating successful podcasts, you can find her on the Great British Sewing Bee.
Laughterhouse Live
Laughterhouse returns to the Philharmonic Hall after a successful Christmas show, promising a fantastic line up of top comedians to tickle its audience’s ribs.
David O’Doherty, Kiri Pritchard-McLean, Clinton Baptiste, Mick Miller, Emmanuel Sonubi and Paul Sinha are currently on the bill, with Chris Cairns acting as MC for what should be a hilarious night of comedy.
Phil Wang: Wang in There, Baby
Hot on the heels of his critically acclaimed Netflix special, David Letterman appearance and role on Life and Beth with Amy Schumer, Phil Wang is bringing a new stand-up show to the Philharmonic Hall.
Expect the comedian and writer to chat race, family, nipples…and everything else that’s been going on in his ‘Philly little life’.
Royal Court Liverpool
Rob Newman Live on Stage
January 13/21.
Fresh from his BBC Radio 4 series Rob Newman On Air, the award-winning comedian is promising a stand-up epic of a new show which goes from cave paintings to car-free cities to ask who are we? Where are we going? And do spiders fly?
The 58-year-old tells a story of how dancing in step saved prehistoric humans, and how new scientific discoveries may help us take the right steps to a life after oil.
Mike Wozniak: Zusa
Hirsute comedian, writer and actor Mike Wozniak (pictured) (Man Down, Small Scenes, Taskmaster) comes to the Royal Court Studio with his new touring show Zusa.
Ever wondered how Wozniak’s great-aunt Zusa made it from Poland to Luton with a war nipping at her heels? Well, here’s your chance to find out.
Glenn Moore
Edinburgh Comedy Award best show nominee Glenn Moore brings his acclaimed live show – Will You Still Need Me, Will You Still Feed Me, Glenn I’m Sixty Moore – to Liverpool in 2023.
Expect a high-energy barrage of the most jokes you’ve ever heard humanely fit into one stand-up show from one of the best joke writers around.
Josie Long: Re-enchantment
Humanity, compassion and some brief political rants infuse Josie Long’s new stand-up show Re-enchantment, which has been inspired by the words of feminist writer Lola Olufemi who said: “After defeat, re-enchantment is necessary.”
Expect musings on the changes wrought by time, passion, moving to Scotland and loving the world under difficult circumstances.
Eddie Fortune: Single
February 18.
Fortune is single, ageing and desperate. In 2019 he dated a Margaret Thatcher-loving Tory while at the height of his career, playing a crab in panto in Bolton. It didn’t last.
From dating musical theatre producers to evil maths teachers from Dudley to red headed spiritualists from Rock Ferry, Fortune shares a life reliant on wine, one night stands and red flags.
Rachel Fairburn: Can I Be Awful?
February 24.
What’s wrong with saying how you see it, why is Fairburn’s ‘truth’ not accepted…and why are you so annoying?
Probably because nobody tells you that you are. Until now that is.
Catch the comedian – and co-host of comedy podcast All Killa No Filla – as she brings her solo tour to the Royal Court Studio this February.
Simon Munnery: Trials and Tribulations
February 25.
Twenty years ago in Edinburgh, Simon Munnery was arrested for “being German in a built-up area”. It wasn’t an early brush with cancel culture, but it did lead to a trial.
Now for the first time the British Comedy Award nominee tells the story of this trial, a second more recent court appearance – and various other distressing life occurrences which he will turn into comedy gold. There may even be a song.
Unity Theatre
Fern Brady: Autistic Bikini Queen
Comedy reviewer-turned-comedian Fern Brady opens the Unity’s comedy programme for 2023 with an additional date for her fifth solo show Autistic Bikini Queen.
The fearless funny woman has been seen on a host of TV shows including Live at the Apollo, Jonathan Ross’s Comedy Club and Frankie Boyle’s New World Order. Now catch her live.
Sophie Duker: Hag
Comedian and writer Sophie Duker’s favourite things include breaking hearts, taking names and telling jokes with the confidence of a straight middle-class white man.
Her Edinburgh Fringe show Venus saw her nominated for the ‘best newcomer’ award and garnered five-star reviews, and she’s been garnering fans ever since.
TV appearances include Live at the Apollo, Mock the Week and Taskmaster.
Jayde Adams: Men, I Can Save You
Jayde Adams (pictured) steps off the Strictly dancefloor and back on to the comedy stage with her new (postponed from last October) stand-up show Men, I Can Save You.
Change is always hard, and what better person to lead the men selflessly by the hand into the new world than multi award-winning comedian and actress Adams?
Everyman and Playhouse
Guz Khan Live
Coventry’s finest brings his big-screen persona and BAFTA-nominated hilarity to Liverpool Playhouse for one night only.
Comedian, impressionist and actor Khan is the creator and star of the BBC’s Man Like Mobeen and has made appearances on shows including The Last Leg, Taskmaster, Live at the Apollo and Netflix’s Turn Up Charlie.
Suzi Ruffell – Snappy
Suited and booted multi award-nominated stand-up comedian, writer and actress Suzi Ruffell (pictured) makes her Liverpool Everyman debut in 2023 with her new live show.
Snappy is all about settling down (but not settling), becoming a mother (without being mumsy) and still worrying about everything – of course, have you SEEN the news?!
John Robins – Howl
November 17.
Edinburgh Comedy Award winner John Robins is embarking on his first live stand-up tour for four years, with a date at the Playhouse this November.
If you’ve seen him before you’ll know to expect rage, anxiety and a lot of laughs. If you haven’t, you might want to strap in for the ride.
Bridget Christie – Who Am I?
November 18.
Foster’s Edinburgh Comedy Award winning comedian Bridget Christie can’t ride the motorbike she bought to combat her mid-life crisis because of early osteoarthritis in her hips and RSI in her wrist; and wonders why there are so many films, made by men, about young women discovering their sexuality, but none about middle-aged women forgetting theirs.
If you relish a menopause laugh-a-minute with a confused, furious, sweaty lady who is annoyed by everything then this is the show for you.
Sam Avery – How to Be a Terrible Parent
November 22.
Here’s one for the mums and dads out there from Liverpool’s own Sam Avery who comes to the Playhouse this November.
You’re a good parent, right? You love your kids. They’re everything to you.
You make them eat vegetables and avoid petty crime. You read bedtime stories and don’t let them play with chainsaws.
So why the nagging feeling that you could do better?
In a world filled with bad advice, empty mantras and online ‘experts’, how do we celebrate the small victories of parenthood and stop ourselves from feeling truly terrible?
Lucy Beaumont – The Trouble and Strife
November 24.
An award-winning comedian before she met John Richardson, Lucy Beaumont is on her way to Liverpool as part of a UK tour in which she’s going to let loose and let slip on her rollercoaster world.
And life through the Beaumont lens is promised to be more surreal than you could ever imagine.
M&S Bank Arena
Peter Kay Live
January 6-7.
Peter Kay has been overwhelmed by the response to his return to the stage for the first time in 12 years.
The Farnworth-born, Bolton-raised comedian, actor and writer comes to the M&S Bank Arena for two memorable nights with a show which is as reflective as it is funny.
His 2010 tour was a record-breaker, being seen by 1.2 million people, and with demand for tickets so strong for his return, this latest outing could potentially beat that.
Chris and Rosie Ramsey: S**ged, Married, Annoyed
December 14.
Following the success of their podcast, which has had more than 100 million downloads, Chris and Rosie Ramsay are on the road with a new live show which is heading to arenas across the country.
The couple have been busy. Apart from the podcast, they enjoyed a sell-out Guinness World Record-breaking 2020 tour, a late-night BBC chat show and a number one best-selling book.

The couple, who married in 2015, debuted their mockumentary comedy in 2020. The show sees them play exaggerated versions of themselves, with other comedians and familiar faces on British TV making guest appearances.
Independently, both are comedians. Beaumont has appeared on numerous panel shows and bases many of her jokes on her home city of Hull in the north of England. Her role in Meet the Richardsons brought her a BAFTA nomination for comedy performance in 2023.
Richardson was the host of Jon Richardson: Ultimate Worrier , which ran for two series, also on Dave.
The Times of London reports that, in an interview last year, Beaumont said the couple’s fictional personas for the show, which sees them frequently engaged in bickering with each other, were not a true reflection of their real-life relationship.

‘Civil War’ Review: We Have Met the Enemy and It Is Us. Again.
In Alex Garland’s tough new movie, a group of journalists led by Kirsten Dunst, as a photographer, travels a United States at war with itself.

‘Civil War’ | Anatomy of a Scene
The writer and director alex garland narrates a sequence from his film..
“My name is Alex Garland and I’m the writer director of ‘Civil War’. So this particular clip is roughly around the halfway point of the movie and it’s these four journalists and they’re trying to get, in a very circuitous route, from New York to DC, and encountering various obstacles on the way. And this is one of those obstacles. What they find themselves stuck in is a battle between two snipers. And they are close to one of the snipers and the other sniper is somewhere unseen, but presumably in a large house that sits over a field and a hill. It’s a surrealist exchange and it’s surrounded by some very surrealist imagery, which is they’re, in broad daylight in broad sunshine, there’s no indication that we’re anywhere near winter in the filming. In fact, you can kind of tell it’s summer. But they’re surrounded by Christmas decorations. And in some ways, the Christmas decorations speak of a country, which is in disrepair, however silly it sounds. If you haven’t put away your Christmas decorations, clearly something isn’t going right.” “What’s going on?” “Someone in that house, they’re stuck. We’re stuck.” “And there’s a bit of imagery. It felt like it hit the right note. But the interesting thing about that imagery was that it was not production designed. We didn’t create it. We actually literally found it. We were driving along and we saw all of these Christmas decorations, basically exactly as they are in the film. They were about 100 yards away, just piled up by the side of the road. And it turned out, it was a guy who’d put on a winter wonderland festival. People had not dug his winter wonderland festival, and he’d gone bankrupt. And he had decided just to leave everything just strewn around on a farmer’s field, who was then absolutely furious. So in a way, there’s a loose parallel, which is the same implication that exists within the film exists within real life.” “You don’t understand a word I say. Yo. What’s over there in that house?” “Someone shooting.” “It’s to do with the fact that when things get extreme, the reasons why things got extreme no longer become relevant and the knife edge of the problem is all that really remains relevant. So it doesn’t actually matter, as it were, in this context, what side they’re fighting for or what the other person’s fighting for. It’s just reduced to a survival.”
By Manohla Dargis
A blunt, gut-twisting work of speculative fiction, “Civil War” opens with the United States at war with itself — literally, not just rhetorically. In Washington, D.C., the president is holed up in the White House; in a spookily depopulated New York, desperate people wait for water rations. It’s the near-future, and rooftop snipers, suicide bombers and wild-eyed randos are in the fight while an opposition faction with a two-star flag called the Western Forces, comprising Texas and California — as I said, this is speculative fiction — is leading the charge against what remains of the federal government. If you’re feeling triggered, you aren’t alone.
It’s mourning again in America, and it’s mesmerizingly, horribly gripping. Filled with bullets, consuming fires and terrific actors like Kirsten Dunst running for cover, the movie is a what-if nightmare stoked by memories of Jan. 6. As in what if the visions of some rioters had been realized, what if the nation was again broken by Civil War, what if the democratic experiment called America had come undone? If that sounds harrowing, you’re right. It’s one thing when a movie taps into childish fears with monsters under the bed; you’re eager to see what happens because you know how it will end (until the sequel). Adult fears are another matter.
In “Civil War,” the British filmmaker Alex Garland explores the unbearable if not the unthinkable, something he likes to do. A pop cultural savant, he made a splashy zeitgeist-ready debut with his 1996 best seller “The Beach,” a novel about a paradise that proves deadly, an evergreen metaphor for life and the basis for a silly film . That things in the world are not what they seem, and are often far worse, is a theme that Garland has continued pursuing in other dark fantasies, first as a screenwriter (“ 28 Days Later ”), and then as a writer-director (“ Ex Machina ”). His résumé is populated with zombies, clones and aliens, though reliably it is his outwardly ordinary characters you need to keep a closer watch on.
By the time “Civil War” opens, the fight has been raging for an undisclosed period yet long enough to have hollowed out cities and people’s faces alike. It’s unclear as to why the war started or who fired the first shot. Garland does scatter some hints; in one ugly scene, a militia type played by a jolting, scarily effective Jesse Plemons asks captives “what kind of American” they are. Yet whatever divisions preceded the conflict are left to your imagination, at least partly because Garland assumes you’ve been paying attention to recent events. Instead, he presents an outwardly and largely post-ideological landscape in which debates over policies, politics and American exceptionalism have been rendered moot by war.
‘Civil War’ Is Designed to Disturb You
One thing that remains familiar amid these ruins is the movie’s old-fashioned faith in journalism. Dunst, who’s sensational, plays Lee, a war photographer who works for Reuters alongside her friend, a reporter, Joel (the charismatic Wagner Moura). They’re in New York when you meet them, milling through a crowd anxiously waiting for water rations next to a protected tanker. It’s a fraught scene; the restless crowd is edging into mob panic, and Lee, camera in hand, is on high alert. As Garland’s own camera and Joel skitter about, Lee carves a path through the chaos, as if she knows exactly where she needs to be — and then a bomb goes off. By the time it does, an aspiring photojournalist, Jessie (Cailee Spaeny), is also in the mix.
The streamlined, insistently intimate story takes shape once Lee, Joel, Jessie and a veteran reporter, Sammy (Stephen McKinley Henderson), pile into a van and head to Washington. Joel and Lee are hoping to interview the president (Nick Offerman), and Sammy and Jessie are riding along largely so that Garland can make the trip more interesting. Sammy serves as a stabilizing force (Henderson fills the van with humanizing warmth), while Jessie plays the eager upstart Lee takes under her resentful wing. It’s a tidily balanced sampling that the actors, with Garland’s banter and via some cozy downtime, turn into flesh-and-blood personalities, people whose vulnerability feeds the escalating tension with each mile.
As the miles and hours pass, Garland adds diversions and hurdles, including a pair of playful colleagues, Tony and Bohai (Nelson Lee and Evan Lai), and some spooky dudes guarding a gas station. Garland shrewdly exploits the tense emptiness of the land, turning strangers into potential threats and pretty country roads into ominously ambiguous byways. Smartly, he also recurrently focuses on Lee’s face, a heartbreakingly hard mask that Dunst lets slip brilliantly. As the journey continues, Garland further sketches in the bigger picture — the dollar is near-worthless, the F.B.I. is gone — but for the most part, he focuses on his travelers and the engulfing violence, the smoke and the tracer fire that they often don’t notice until they do.
Despite some much-needed lulls (for you, for the narrative rhythm), “Civil War” is unremittingly brutal or at least it feels that way. Many contemporary thrillers are far more overtly gruesome than this one, partly because violence is one way unimaginative directors can put a distinctive spin on otherwise interchangeable material: Cue the artful fountains of arterial spray. Part of what makes the carnage here feel incessant and palpably realistic is that Garland, whose visual approach is generally unfussy, doesn’t embellish the violence, turning it into an ornament of his virtuosity. Instead, the violence is direct, at times shockingly casual and unsettling, so much so that its unpleasantness almost comes as a surprise.
If the violence feels more intense than in a typical genre shoot ’em up, it’s also because, I think, with “Civil War,” Garland has made the movie that’s long been workshopped in American political discourse and in mass culture, and which entered wider circulation on Jan. 6. The raw power of Garland’s vision unquestionably owes much to the vivid scenes that beamed across the world that day when rioters, some wearing T-shirts emblazoned with “ MAGA civil war ,” swarmed the Capitol. Even so, watching this movie, I also flashed on other times in which Americans have relitigated the Civil War directly and not, on the screen and in the streets.
Movies have played a role in that relitigation for more than a century, at times grotesquely. Two of the most famous films in history — D.W. Griffith’s 1915 racist epic “The Birth of a Nation” (which became a Ku Klux Klan recruitment tool) and the romantic 1939 melodrama “Gone With the Wind” — are monuments to white supremacy and the myth of the Southern Lost Cause. Both were critical and popular hits. In the decades since, filmmakers have returned to the Civil War era to tell other stories in films like “Glory,” “Lincoln” and “Django Unchained” that in addressing the American past inevitably engage with its present.
There are no lofty or reassuring speeches in “Civil War,” and the movie doesn’t speak to the better angels of our nature the way so many films try to. Hollywood’s longstanding, deeply American imperative for happy endings maintains an iron grip on movies, even in ostensibly independent productions. There’s no such possibility for that in “Civil War.” The very premise of Garland’s movie means that — no matter what happens when or if Lee and the rest reach Washington — a happy ending is impossible, which makes this very tough going. Rarely have I seen a movie that made me so acutely uncomfortable or watched an actor’s face that, like Dunst’s, expressed a nation’s soul-sickness so vividly that it felt like an X-ray.
Civil War Rated R for war violence and mass death. Running time: 1 hour 49 minutes. In theaters.
An earlier version of this review misidentified an organization in the Civil War in the movie. It is the Western Forces, not the Western Front.
