Gettysburg National Military Park Gettysburg National Military Park free

Bordering the southern end of downtown Gettysburg, the roughly 6,000-acre Gettysburg National Military Park is a must for history buffs, especially those with an interest in the Civil War. It was here that Confederate troops clashed with Union soldiers for three days in July 1863, resulting in a decisive victory for the North. But this key win for the Union came at a cost: More than 51,000 soldiers on both sides died, were wounded, went missing or were captured, making this conflict the bloodiest battle of the war.

Today, Gettysburg National Military Park welcomes visitors keen on learning more about the Civil War through exhibits, ranger programs, guided tours  and special events. Some of the park's most noteworthy sights are as follows:

Eisenhower National Historic Site Eisenhower National Historic Site

As its name implies, the Eisenhower National Historic Site once belonged to America's 34th president. Former President Dwight D. Eisenhower purchased the farm in 1950, using it for weekend retreats from the White House . After his presidency, Eisenhower moved to the property full time, where he and his wife lived until they died in 1969 and 1979, respectively.

On the 230-acre farm, visitors will find everything from Eisenhower's former home to a skeet shooting range to a garage with his limousine, golf carts and station wagon. There is also a Reception Center with exhibits about Eisenhower's life.

Sachs Covered Bridge Sachs Covered Bridge free

Measuring 100 feet long, Sachs Covered Bridge (or Sauck's Bridge) is a popular place for a photo-op. Reportedly built by local architect David Stoner in 1852, this car-free bridge – which sits above Marsh Creek – is surrounded by lush trees and features a red exterior. It was frequently used by Union and Confederate troops during the Battle of Gettysburg in 1863.

Although a few travelers warn that this bridge is a little challenging to find, many say seeing it is more than worth the effort. According to several visitors, the bridge's romantic atmosphere during the day makes it well-suited for couples. If you're more interested in paranormal activity, vacationers suggest visiting at night on your own or while on a ghost tour with a reputable company like Ghostly Images of Gettysburg or After Dark Investigations .

Shriver House Museum Shriver House Museum

Like the Jennie Wade House , the Shriver House Museum aims to portray what life was like for Gettysburg residents during the Civil War. Inside this restored 19th-century home, which belonged to the Shriver family, you'll find 10 Civil War bullets, medical supplies, furnishings and more. Plus, you'll learn more about the building's use as a home, a saloon, a two-lane bowling alley and a hospital for wounded soldiers. The property was even temporarily commandeered by Confederate troops during the Battle of Gettysburg. At least two soldiers are known to have died in the attic.

Previous visitors heaped praise on this historic property, citing its well-maintained rooms, excellent artifacts and friendly staff as highlights. Many were especially impressed with the informative guides, who wear period attire and provide interesting details about the Shriver family.

Gettysburg Museum of History Gettysburg Museum of History free

History buffs with an interest in everything from ancient civilizations to the Civil War to world leaders will likely love perusing the exhibits at the Gettysburg Museum of History. Inside this intimate museum in central Gettysburg, you'll find more than 4,000 artifacts from various historical periods. Noteworthy items include a Confederate flag used at the First Battle of Bull Run, former President Abraham Lincoln's wallet, an Egyptian mummy head, a dining set that belonged to Saddam Hussein and a footstool owned by Adolf Hitler.

Previous museumgoers praised this small museum's knowledgeable curator and variety of artifacts, though some felt that a few of the items were not significant enough to keep in the collection. Others appreciated the property's lack of an entrance fee and highly recommend visiting the on-site shop, which sells authentic historical items, such as Civil War bullets, presidential campaign memorabilia and coins from ancient Rome .

Jennie Wade House Jennie Wade House

To better understand what life was like during the Civil War, visit the Jennie Wade House. This historic building is where Mary Virginia "Jennie" Wade (the only civilian casualty during the Battle of Gettysburg) died when struck by a Confederate bullet on July 3, 1863, the last day of the battle. Today, the structure looks much as it did in the 19th century, with period furnishings and artifacts from the day Jennie died.

Most travelers raved about the Jennie Wade House, especially its interesting and informative tour guides (who wear period-inspired attire). However, a few previous visitors cautioned that the property feels more like a tourist trap than an authentic Civil War attraction.

Gettysburg Diorama & History Center Gettysburg Diorama & History Center

For a bird's-eye view of Gettysburg National Military Park 's battlefield, head to the Gettysburg Diorama & History Center. The star of this attraction is its large diorama, which is the largest military diorama in the U.S. It features more than 20,000 soldiers, buildings, horses and cannons. Travelers can also watch a 30-minute show of the Battle of Gettysburg that includes narration and light and sound effects.

According to previous visitors, the Gettysburg Diorama & History Center provides a terrific overview of Gettysburg's iconic battle. In fact, several said the facility's show is so informative that they recommend heading here before going to Gettysburg National Military Park. However, a few past travelers lamented the outdated technology used in the diorama, while others suggested skipping the "Spirits of Gettysburg" show downstairs.

The total solar eclipse is Monday: Here's everything to know, including time, path, safety

On Monday, a total solar eclipse will cross North America – a phenomenon that has not taken place in the United States in seven years, and astronomers say will not take place again in the U.S. for another two decades.

Millions will likely gaze into the sky on April 8 for the rare experience to witness three celestial spheres − the sun, moon and Earth − line up partially or fully depending on where you are viewing it.

What time will the total solar eclipse begin? What path will it take across the nation? How do I safely watch it without damaging my eyes?

Here's a list of important things you should know about Monday's potential once-in-a-lifetime event.

What is a solar eclipse?

Any celestial object like a moon or a planet that passes between two other bodies can create  an eclipse  by obscuring the view of objects like the sun.

A total eclipse occurs when the moon appears as the same size as the sun and blocks the entire disk from Earth, leading to a period of darkness lasting several minutes. The resulting "totality," whereby observers can see the outermost layer of the sun's atmosphere known as the corona, confuses animals – causing nocturnal creatures to stir and bird and insects to fall silent.

A recent study even found that clouds activity is altered by eclipses as shallow cumulus clouds were observed vanishing when the moon obscured the sun.

A driving no no during the eclipse: The one thing you'll want to do is the only thing not to do while driving during solar eclipse

What states are on the path of totality?

The total solar eclipse will chart a 115-mile-wide path of totality across portions of Mexico, the United States and Canada.

In the U.S. alone, hundreds of cities and smaller towns in 13 states  lie along the path . An estimated 31 million Americans already live on the path, while millions more tourists are already making travel plans – sure to snarl traffic – to catch a glimpse of what is sure to be a spectacular sight, according to eclipse cartographer Michael Zeiler at GreatAmericanEclipse.com .

Additionally, small parts of Tennessee and Michigan are also expected to experience the eclipse,  NASA says .

Here are the major cities in each state where you can expect to experience totality in the United States (note that the included times do not account for when the partial eclipse begins and ends):

  • Dallas, Texas: 1:40-1:44 p.m. CDT
  • Idabel, Oklahoma: 1:45-1:49 p.m. CDT
  • Little Rock, Arkansas: 1:51-1:54 p.m. CDT
  • Poplar Bluff, Missouri: 1:56-2:00 p.m. CDT
  • Paducah, Kentucky: 2-2:02 p.m. CDT
  • Carbondale, Illinois: 1:59-2:03 p.m. CDT
  • Evansville, Indiana: 2:02-2:05 p.m. CDT
  • Cleveland, Ohio: 3:13-3:17 p.m. EDT
  • Erie, Pennsylvania: 3:16-3:20 p.m. EDT
  • Buffalo, New York: 3:18-3:22 p.m. EDT
  • Burlington, Vermont: 3:26-3:29 p.m. EDT
  • Lancaster, New Hampshire: 3:27-3:30 p.m. EDT
  • Caribou, Maine: 3:32-3:34 p.m. EDT

What time is the solar eclipse?

Mexico's Pacific coast will be the first location in continental North America to experience totality, which will occur at about 11:07 a.m. PDT,  according to NASA .

As the moon's shadow travels northeast, totality in the U.S. will begin at 1:27 p.m. CDT in Eagle Pass, Texas. From there, the path will cut diagonally across the country before ending its time in the U.S. around 3:35 p.m. EDT in Lee, Maine, and entering Canada's maritime provinces, according to  nationaleclipse.com .

Decoding the sky: A definitive solar eclipse guide for kids (adults also welcome)

How long will the total solar eclipse last?

Along the way, periods of darkness could last a mere few seconds or, in some cities, could surpass four minutes.

If you want to see the time and duration for when totality would occur near you, enter your zip code below to find out. You can also search for specifics on your location using this interactive map .

How to safely view the solar eclipse

Unlike partial solar eclipses, a total eclipse offers spectators a unique opportunity to gaze upon it with the naked eye, but only when the moon completely blocks out the sun and darkness falls – referred to as totality.

While you're unlikely to go blind , gazing directly at the sun's rays can do some serious damage to your retinas. So until the moment that totality occurs,  proper safety eyewear  is still a must, according to  NASA .

While some welding goggles may work, the best option for eclipse viewing remains certified eyewear, which is held to an international safety standard and is 100,000 times darker than most sunglasses to block nearly all visible, infrared and ultraviolet light.

Solar eclipse glasses are readily available from plenty of vendors across the internet, but if you want to save some cash, there's a good chance your local library or another public institution is giving them away for free.

Just watch out for cheap imitations. To make it easy while you're shopping online, the American Astronomical Society maintains  a curated list of approved vendors .

Another simple method is to create your own pinhole projector to project the sun onto a nearby surface. The American Astronomical Society offers helpful  instructions  to set them up as well.

When was the last solar eclipse?

The last solar eclipse took place on Aug. 21, 2017 . In October, skygazers were delighted by a rare "ring of fire" solar eclipse , where the moon slides in front of the sun but doesn't totally obscure it, creating a halo effect.

When is the next total solar eclipse after 2024?

Whether you live on the path of totality or need to find the nearest city that will be enveloped in daytime darkness, one thing is for sure: Now is the time to make your plans to see it.

For North America,  the next total solar eclipse  won't be until Aug. 23, 2044,  according to NASA .

Unfortunately, the 2044 total solar eclipse won't have the broad reach across the U.S. as the 2024 eclipse.

The Planetary Society, a nonprofit involved in research, public outreach and political space advocacy, says that during the 2044 eclipse, the path of totality will only touch three states.

The eclipse will begin in Greenland, sweep through Canada and end around sunset in Montana, North Dakota and South Dakota.

2024 Masters Tiger updates: Woods' second round underway, inside projected cutline

Woods inside projected cut line as he eyes history Friday

Change Text Size

Friday will tell us a lot about the state of Tiger Woods.

The five-time Masters winner stood 1-under through 13 holes when play was suspended due to darkness Thursday night. Step one, done.

Step two will be much more difficult. Woods, who had played just 24 holes of PGA TOUR competition entering this week, is tasked with completing 23 holes on Friday — the final five of his first round and his full 18-hole second round.

Opening round play resumed at 7:50 a.m. ET Friday, just over 12 hours after it was suspended Thursday night. How will Woods’ body hold up with the short recovery time? That’s the million-dollar question.

"The body is okay," Woods said Thursday evening. "We've got some work to do yet tonight."

After undergoing ankle surgery following a WD during the third round of last year’s Masters, Woods returned to PGA TOUR competition at The Genesis Invitational in February, where he opened in 1-over 72 but withdrew during the second round due to flu-like symptoms. The Masters is Woods’ first start since withdrawing at The Genesis, and he said Tuesday that he still believes he can contend and win. That’s why he’s here, after all.

“If everything comes together, I think I can get one more,” said the five-time Masters winner on Tuesday.

Count the weather as one thing against Woods. A two-and-a-half-hour rain delay on Thursday forced him to return early Friday morning to complete his first round; his already tight recovery timeline sped up even more. It looked that way in the opening holes with some good and bad swings mixed in. He walked well at times; he walked gingerly at times. His physical progression throughout Friday will be important.

Woods entered the week on a streak of 23 consecutive made cuts at the Masters, sharing the all-time record with Fred Couples and Gary Player. He'll have a chance Friday to hold that record alone, but expected windy conditions (up to 34 mph) should offer a challenge for Woods and the field at large.

Read below for a hole-by-hole look at Woods' Friday at Augusta National.

Hole 2 (par 5, 585): Woods opts for 3-wood today and finds the fairway. If you recall, Woods went way left with his tee shot on this hole yesterday using driver. But with the hole playing downwind today, he can get to the green in two without driver.

From 267 yards away, Woods ropes a wood over the right side of the green and into the patrons. With the hole location on the far left side of the green, he's got plenty of room to operate, but he's still 43 yards away.

Hole 1 (par 4, 445 yards): New round, same driver. Woods has hit every fairway today, including on the first hole of his second round. Along the left side of the fairway, Woods has an ideal angle from 161 yards out and hits in pin-high, about 15 feet from the hole. After two bogeys and three pars to close his first round this morning, Woods has a chance to get his second round off to a great start.

Woods gives it a good run but misses it on the high side. No complaining about a par at No. 1, now with a chance to get a birdie at the par-5 second.

Woods even-par thru 1, 1-over overall

Hole 18 (par 4, 465 yards): Tiger has great rhythm with the driver, with another perfectly placed tee shot in the 18th fairway. It's a mighty encouraging sign as the first round finishes up and Woods readies for 18 more holes. It's a 287-yard drive. He has 171 yards into the closing par 4.

After Max Homa's approach got swallowed up by the wind and found the right greenside bunker, Woods plays a nearly identical shot. The wind impacted those shots much more than either player anticipated. Woods will need an up-and-down to finish even-par for the first round.

Nearly more short game magic for Woods! His bunker shot comes just inches from hitting the flagstick. Instead, it races by and Woods has more than he bargained for -- 16 feet for par. He gets the putt to the hole but doesn't play enough break. He closes with a bogey.

Woods finishes with an opening-round 73. That's a solid result given his lack of competitive reps, though Woods is surely disappointed after he was 1 under through 13 holes when play suspended Thursday night. He won't have much time to dwell on the finish. His second round tee time is scheduled for 10:18 a.m. ET. He has around 45 minutes to grab some food, keep the body loose and get ready for 18 more holes.

Woods shoots 1-over 73

Hole 17 (par 4, 440 yards): It's another low, fading bullet with the driver that finds the fairway. Woods is 3-for-3 in fairways hit this morning. That's a great sign. He's hit 77% of the fairways in this first round, slightly better than the field average.

With 158 yards into the green, Woods pulls 9-iron and plays the smart shot, leaving himself below the hole. He will have 23 feet for birdie. After a few shaky iron swings to start the morning, Woods has hit two solid ones with his tee shot on 16 and now this approach.

Woods leaves his birdie putt short. That's three putts left short in his opening four holes of the day. But it is another stress-free par. Those are always welcome at Augusta National, particularly on the 17th.

Woods even-par thru 17

Hole 16 (par 3, 170 yards): Woods pulls 7-iron after watching Jason Day put one in the water with the same club. The 82-time PGA TOUR winner doesn't make the same mistake. Woods safely lands it 20 feet past the pin and uses the slope to get it on the same plateau as the hole. He will have 20 feet for birdie.

It's a quick putt, meandering slightly left to right. Woods handles it with care but doesn't give it quite enough pace. That will be another par for Woods. He's 1-over since play resumed today but has made two relatively easy pars after that opening bogey.

Woods even-par thru 16

Hole 15 (par 5, 550 yards): Woods’ drive finds the fairway but it will be a lay-up with 273 yards remaining into the green. He does just that, leaving himself 70 yards. It's a tricky wedge shot on a severe downslope and Woods can't control the spin as the ball rolls off the back of the green. Woods' ball-striking has been iffy to start, but his touch is fully activated as he nearly holes the chip for birdie. He makes the comebacker for par.

It's a hole you'd like to make birdie, but Woods will take the par. He is clearly laboring this morning; the short turnaround time was likely going to be problematic. As the weather warms and Woods gets a few more swings, let's see how his body progresses.

Woods even-par thru 15

Hole 14 (par 4, 440 yards): Play resumed as scheduled at 7:50 a.m. ET. Woods plays his patented cut off the tee and finds the fairway. The 315-yard drive leaves him just 119 yards into the green, but Woods lays the sod over a wedge and comes up short of the green. That leaves Woods with a delicate chip, with the pin sitting on the top of a slope on the back of the green. Woods opts to hit a low spinner, but the ball releases out and Woods has 22 feet for par. The curling right-to-left putt come up just short. Woods makes bogey and drops a shot.

Woods even-par thru 14

Masters 2024 props, golf odds: Expert reveals top PGA Tour prop bets, parlay picks for Augusta National

Mike mcclure locked in his expert pga golf prop picks and parlay for the masters 2024 at augusta national.

gettysburg tours today

The first 2024 Masters tee times will begin at 10:30 a.m. ET on Thursday after weather delayed the start of the opening round. At 100-1 to win outright in the 2024 Masters odds, it's unlikely that Tiger Woods will pick up his sixth career green jacket this week at the Masters 2024. However, there are still plenty of intriguing Masters Tiger props on the board for golf bettors to consider before he tees off. The latest 2024 Masters prop bets list Woods' Round 1 score over/under at 73.5, with the Over favored at -165 (risk $165 to win $100).

Other Tiger prop picks include a top-10 overall finish paying +900 and a top-20 performance returning +350. Which 2024 Masters props should you target involving Woods and every other golfer in the 2024 Masters field? Before locking in your 2024 Masters prop picks or entering Masters pool picks, you need to see what SportsLine DFS pro and PGA expert Mike McClure has to say .

McClure is a DFS legend with over $2 million in career winnings, and he's been red-hot on his PGA picks dating back to the PGA Tour restart in June of 2020. McClure uses his proprietary simulation model to analyze the field and crush his  golf picks . He is up almost $9,500 on his best bets since the restart.

McClure's model predicted Jon Rahm would finish on top of the leaderboard at the 2023 Sentry Tournament of Champions and The American Express. At the 2023 Masters, the model was all over Rahm's second career major victory heading into the weekend. It was the second straight Masters win for the model, which also nailed Scheffler winning in 2022.

This same model has also nailed a whopping 10 majors entering the weekend. Anyone who has followed McClure's picks has seen massive returns.

Now, McClure has dialed in on the Masters golf tournament and just locked in his top prop picks and PGA predictions. You can only see McClure's Masters 2024 prop picks at SportsLine .

Top 2024 Masters prop picks

We can tell you that one of McClure's favorite Masters prop picks is Ludvig Aberg to be the top debutant at +275. Despite turning pro less than a year ago, Aberg comes to Augusta in strong form. He's already picked up wins on both the PGA Tour and European Tour in the past seven months.

He's also made every cut during his 2024 PGA Tour schedule and hasn't finished worse than 25th in his past six events. His average finish position during that span is 12.8 and he's posted four rounds of 66 or lower this year, including an astonishing 63 in Round 4 of the Sentry. Wyndham Clark is the only other first-time Masters player who can claim a comparable recent run to Aberg, so McClure loves the value of betting on Aberg at a return that approaches 3-1.  You can see who else to back at SportsLine .

How to make Masters 2024 prop picks

McClure has also locked in a slew of other prop bets for the 2024 Masters, including a prop that pays almost 20-1 and comes from an unlikely player. You can find out who it is, and check out all of McClure's Masters prop picks at SportsLine .

Who wins the Masters 2024, and which golfer should you target for almost a 20-1 payout? Visit SportsLine now to get Mike McClure's Masters 2024 prop picks, all from the golf expert who is up almost $9,500 on his best bets since 2020 , and find out.
