The Berlin Welcome Card includes a travel ticket for the public transport service (such as bus & rail) and the Berlin Welcome Card guide . The Berlin Welcome Card is available as an online ticket and a hardticket . When purchasing the Welcome Card, each visitor will also receive the practical Berlin Welcome Card guide. One guide is sufficient per group (maximum 4 people), another guide is needed for each additional person.
Upon presentation of the ticket and the guide, visitors will receive the respective discounts & rebates. When purchasing the Berlin Welcome Card including Museum Island, the visitor gets once-daily free access to the museums on Berlin’s Museum Island (special exhibitions are excluded) during the period of validity.
The 48 hours and 72 hours variants have a sliding period of validity. The card is valid for 48 or 72 hours from the moment it is used for the first time (validation). Example: You have a Berlin WelcomeCard for 48 hours. You validate the card on Saturday at 9:30 a.m. The card is then valid until 09:29 on Monday. The 4, 5 & 6 day variant is valid from the first calendar day of use until midnight on the last calendar day. Example: You have a Berlin WelcomeCard for 4 days. You can validate the card on Tuesday at any time. The card is then valid until midnight (midnight) on Friday.
Online tickets do not have to be separately validated before being used for the first time .
Which types of Berlin Welcome Card are there?
The Berlin Welcome Card is available as two ticket types:
Type 1: as a discount card with many discount partners:

Important : for journeys from/to Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER), you will need a Berlin Welcome Card for the zone ABC. Unfortunately, an extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to include a connection ticket for tariff zone C is not possible.

Which regions are covered by the tariff zones Berlin AB or Berlin ABC?
The sections A and B each cover the actual urban area, whereby the outer limit of section B is largely identical to the city limits. Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) is located in tariff zone Berlin C . For this reason, tourists arriving at the Berlin Brandenburg airport BER need the Berlin Welcome Card for the tariff zone ABC in order to have unrestricted use of public transport. Section C extends – measured from the city limits – up to a distance of 10 to 15 km into the surrounding areas. Exceptions here are tourist and special lines and journeys with Deutsche Bahn. Unfortunately, an extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone Berlin C is not possible.
Can you travel to Potsdam with the Berlin Welcome Card?
Visitors to Berlin who want to travel to Potsdam or Sachsenhausen need the Berlin Welcome Card for tariff zone ABC in order to use the public transport service without any restrictions. An extension of the Berlin Welcome Card AB to a connection ticket for tariff zone C is unfortunately not possible.
How is the period of validity for the Berlin Welcome Card calculated?
It is possible to validate the card up to 31/12 of the calendar year in which the purchase was made. However, the latest period of validity is up to 02/01 (48-hour ticket) or 03/01 (72-hour ticket) or 03/01 at 12am (4-day ticket) or 04/01 at 12am (5-day ticket) or 05/01 at 12am (6-day ticket) of the following year.
The public transport ticket must be validated once before starting the journey in the ticket validation machine (except online tickets) . The discounts included in the guide are exclusively valid combined with your Berlin Welcome Card travel ticket and only after its validation.
Where can I get the guide if I already have the ticket?
The guide belongs to the Berlin Welcome Card and must always be presented when claiming discounts. You will receive the guide upon presentation of your Berlin Welcome Card ticket (from the machines) at Berlin tourist information centres as well as at BVG and S-Bahn sales outlets. The guide is also available as a downloadable version .
Can I cancel or exchange the ticket?
Booked tickets cannot be cancelled. The ticket cannot be exchanged / rebooked for a different day of validity. All the details are listed in our General Terms and Conditions.

The photo above left shows all the levels, with upper platforms (11-16) visible at upper right on level +2, the people are standing on level +1, the McDonalds 'm' is on level 0 (street level), level -1 is visible below that and you can just see level -2 with one of the lower platforms (1-8) in the lower part of the photo.
The photo above right is taken from level +1, it shows what you see when you arrive and look out through the glass facade. The Reichstag (indicated by the arrow) is only a few minutes walk away.
Taken from entrance level (level 0) showing lifts & escalators down to platforms 1-8 on level -2.
Platforms 1-8 below ground
Platforms 11-16 above ground, domestic & international ticket offices.
There is a large ticket office selling national & international tickets, located on level +1, one floor up from ground level beneath platforms 11-16. The entrance is marked Reisezentrum (travel centre), see the photo below.
Left luggage lockers, ATMs & WiFi
Left luggage lockers and a staffed left luggage office are available if you need to leave your bags, signed Gepäck Center , see the luggage lockers page for prices & opening hours . The Gepäck Center is on level +1, one floor up from ground level, one floor below platforms 11-16.
The station has WiFi, but only the first 30 minutes are free. The network to select is Telekom . There are ATMs in various places around the station.
First class lounge
DB Lounge: In the unlikely event that you have an expensive 1st class Flexpreis ticket for an IC , ICE , EC or Railjet train you can use the DB first class lounge with complimentary tea, coffee, beer and snacks plus free WiFi. It's located on the southeast corner of level +1 at the end of a balcony, go one floor up from the main station entrance and turn right. You cannot use the lounge with 1st class advance-purchase Sparpreis or Super Sparpreis tickets or Interrail or Eurail passes, or with tickets for Nightjet sleeper trains or regional trains.
Steigenberger Hotel bar: My favourite VIP waiting room if I've time to kill between trains or an evening wait before catching a sleeper is the bar at the excellent Steigenberger Hotel across the forecourt, walk out of the main station exit and turn right, see walking map . It's an oasis with friendly staff away from the hustle and bustle of the station where you can enjoy a beer or wine, see the photo below. They also serve food.
Ibis hotel lounge : Alternatively, the Ibis Hotel Berlin Hbf is just across the road and to the right from the station's main north-side exit, see walking map . It has a trendy modern lounge with coffee machine, drinks & snacks available. For the price of a drink or two you can use it as a waiting lounge or workspace with power sockets & free WiFi. Also a better bet than hanging around in the station!
Food & drink
There are plenty of places to eat & drink in Berlin Hbf including all the usual suspects: Burger King, McDonalds, Pizza Hut, Dunkin Donuts. There is a large REWE supermarket on level -1 where you can stock up for the journey (pictured below). It's one level down from ground level and to the left (if you stand facing the way you walked in), or if you find it easier to visualise, it's on the southwest corner of level -1.
Hotels near the station
This is the huge pedestrianised square in front of Berlin Hbf, the camera is panned just to the left of the main station entrance. The left-hand building is the Steigenberger Hotel , the pale middle building is the Menninger Hotel . The InterCity Hotel is behind the Steigenberger. All very convenient for the station!
I've found the InterCity Hotel to be an excellent choice, spacious rooms, pleasant staff & a good breakfast.
Local transport : Walking, taxis & metro
More information, walking to the reichstag & brandenburg gate ....
The Reichstag building is just 11 minutes walk from the station, the famous Brandenburg Gate just 6 minutes further on. Well worth a stroll, it's incredible to think that not so many years ago the Brandenburg Gate marked the boundary between East and West Berlin. See my preferred walking route from Berlin Hbf to the Brandenburg Gate , this takes you through pleasant parks, you can safely ignore Google's warning about including restricted roads.
The Reichstag building, built between 1884 & 1894, see en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Reichstag_building . To visit the dome, see www.bundestag.de/en .

Berlin Gesundbrunnen : Location map
Berlin Gesundbrunnen is a secondary station on the Berlin circle line 3.5 km northeast of Berlin Hbf. Normally used mainly by regional trains, in an ideal world you'd never need to go there, but occasionally long-distance trains are diverted to start/finish at Berlin Gesundbrunnen instead of Berlin Hbf due to engineering work. For example, Intercity trains to/from Amsterdam and EuroCity trains to/from Poland are occasionally diverted to Gesundbrunnen on certain dates.
The station has a cafe and supermarket. There's a shopping centre next to the station which has a large Rewe supermarket.
How to transfer from Berlin Hbf to Berlin Gesundbrunnen : Regional trains link Berlin Hbf low-level platforms & Berlin Gesundbrunnen every 5-20 minutes taking 5 minutes or less, it's just one stop, check times at int.bahn.de . If you book your mainline ticket to or from Berlin Hbf, this connection will be covered, these regional trains are also covered by an Interrail or Eurail pass, and by a Sparpreis ticket which includes city transport in Berlin. You can also travel between stations by S-Bahn (overground metro) with a change at Freidrichstrasse.
Berlin Gesundbrunnen exterior. The station sits on top of the tracks, the concourse is behind this building.
The main concourse, looking across all the tracks with steps & escalators down to each pair of platforms on the left. A decent cafe is on the right, with the ticket office beyond it, opposite the steps to platforms 5 & 6.
Berlin Gesundbrunnen platform 9 & 10. The Nightjet from Berlin to Vienna & Budapest is on platform 10, diverted to start at Gesundbrunnen on this occasion.

10 places around Berlin Hauptbahnhof
Berlin’s main railway station, the Hauptbahnhof, lies at the heart of Europe with trains departing for Amsterdam and Prague, Moscow and Bern, Vienna and Warsaw. The station is a monument to modernity, a palace of glass – but there’s much more to see than the station itself. So if you’re in the neighbourhood or a passenger passing through, get out and start exploring.
1. Hamburger Bahnhof
The collection of contemporary art housed in the Hamburger Bahnhof – a former terminal station on the Berlin to Hamburg line and one of the oldest railway buildings in Germany – is one of the largest and most important in the world. With exhibitions dedicated to art from 1960 to today, the collection boasts works by Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly and Joseph Beuys to name but a few. You can also sample some traditional German cuisine at the Restaurant im Hamburger Bahnhof, a great restaurant with an outdoor terrace along the River Spree.
Location: Invalidenstraße 50-51, 10557 Berlin
2. Zollpackhof
One of Berlin’s oldest restaurants with roots dating back to 1700, Zollpackhof is the perfect place to while away an hour two with a cold Augustiner from Munich’s oldest independent brewery and some authentic German and Austrian fare. The rustic 360° fireplace and tasteful interior design add the finishing touches to this quintessentially German setting. In the summer months, the adjoining beer garden – one of Berlin’s most beautiful – sits in the shade of a giant horse-chestnut tree across the River Spree from the Chancellery. Grab a beer and enjoy a traditional German experience.
Location: Elisabeth-Abegg-Straße 1, 10557 Berlin
3. Futurium
Take a look at the world of tomorrow at Berlin’s new museum of future technologies and trends. This ‘house of futures’ focuses on the question: how do we want to live? Artificial intelligence, robotics, 3D printing – all things future-oriented are under the spotlight here, and visitors are encouraged to get involved. Visit the test kitchen to learn about how insects may be the future of food or swing by the Futurium Lab to get hands-on experience using a laser cutter. There’s also a fantastic skywalk that offers panoramic views of the centre of Berlin.
Location: Alexanderufer 2, 10557 Berlin
4. Restaurant Paris-Moskau
This charming half-timbered establishment is a pocket of old Berlin amid the concrete and glass of Germany’s modern government district. The building dates back to 1898 and miraculously survived WWII, becoming an important meeting point between East and West. Today, the restaurant boasts exquisite food, a great selection of wines, and a classic design – and with government buildings nearby, you may well find yourself rubbing shoulders with Angela Merkel. Who knows, you might even feel inspired to board the weekly train from Berlin Hauptbahnhof to Moscow.
Location: Alt-Moabit 141, 10557 Berlin
5. Berlin Museum of Medical History
As an institution of Berlin’s renowned Charité hospital, this fascinating museum details the history of medicine over the last 300 years, with extensive collections that focus on pathology and human anatomy. Alongside a former operating theatre, a pathologist’s dissection room, a laboratory and a patients ward, there are objects on display that are not for the faint-hearted – preserved body parts and organs, skeletons and deformities. Well worth a visit for those with curious minds seeking out a more alternative activity.
Location: Charitéplatz 1, D 10117 Berlin
6. Boese Buben Bar
This gem of a café/bar tucked away on a side street beneath an awning of ivy serves fresh and healthy meals at reasonable prices, including great vegetarian food. The atmosphere inside is warm and inviting, with cosy lighting, teeming bookshelves and fresh flowers and candlesticks on each table. The style is eclectic, the clientele too. With no Wi-Fi to distract you, the café forces you to switch off and enjoy the simple things in life – good coffee, good food and a pleasant environment.
Location: Marienstraße 18, 10117 Berlin
7. Moabit Prison Historical Park
Every corner of Berlin has a story to tell. In this peaceful memorial park close to the bustling railway station, a jail once stood that played host to some grisly chapters in German history, including the beheading of an attempted assassin of Kaiser Wilhelm I, a Gestapo detention centre for resistance fighters and the only site of execution in the Western sectors. Today, however, it’s a tranquil green space away from the hustle and bustle of the station and a welcome place to relax in or go for a stroll.
Location: Lehrter Str. 5B, 10557 Berlin
8. Maxway Coffee
If you’re just after a cup of coffee or a quick bite to eat, forget the busy coffee chains in the station and head to Maxway Coffee . Here you’ll find great coffee, tasty pastries and warm soups – all in a modern and comfortable setting with the Bundestag in view and the river a stone’s throw away.
Location: Katharina-Paulus-Straße 2, 10557 Berlin
9. Hotel Restaurant Rossi
This charming hotel restaurant only a short walk from the railway station is a great place to grab a bite to eat, with seasonal and regional lunch specials, vegetarian dishes and a variety of homemade cakes. People with disabilities make up around half of the restaurant’s staff, so by dining here you are helping provide them with opportunities to participate in the workplace and integrate into society.
Location: Lehrter Straße 66, 10557 Berlin
10. Capital Beach (in summer)
While away an hour or two at this lively summer beach bar located right by Berlin Hauptbahnhof on the banks of the River Spree. Grab a deck chair and a cocktail and watch the world pass you by. The perfect place to spend a sunny afternoon.
Location: Ludwig-Erhard-Ufer 1, 10557 Berlin
