Watch: Chicago Cubs release incredible drone tour of Wrigley Field

There are few things in sports more majestic than a baseball field. From little league all the way up to MLB, America's pastime is immortalized throughout the country with the diamond, grass outfield, and bleachers around it all.

With that said, not all fields or stadiums are made alike, and not all hold the history and charm of Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs.

From the iconic sign out front to the ivy wall, Wrigley Field is truly a magical place if you're a baseball fan. Well, okay, maybe not if you're a fan of the cross-town Chicago White Sox or St. Louis Cardinals. For the rest of us, though, and especially for Cubbies fans, Wrigley Field is iconic.

Speaking of iconic, this single-shot drone tour of Wrigley is one of the best things currently floating around the internet.

To the best fans in baseball, You make Wrigley Field the Friendly Confines. pic.twitter.com/Gtdr3boTXH — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) September 30, 2022

There are three games left this season at Wrigley, as the Cubs have been eliminated from playoff contention.

The Cubbies play three at home against the Cincinnati Reds starting this weekend before finishing up the season with three more games against the Reds on the road.

The drone video is an awesome reminder, though. The Cubs' season may be ending, but Wrigley is immortal.

Amazing drone video tour of Wrigley Field goes viral

A look at Wrigley Field

Wrigley Field, home of the Chicago Cubs, has long been and remains one of the most beautiful ballparks in baseball. Despite being built in 1914, it has stood the test of time, albeit without some modern amenities.

Still, it has provided wonderful memories for fans of America’s Game, both new and old. And with the 2022 regular season winding down, the Cubs decided to provide a visual tour of the stadium via drone. Unsurprisingly, the amazing video went viral instantaneously.

To the best fans in baseball, You make Wrigley Field the Friendly Confines. pic.twitter.com/Gtdr3boTXH — Chicago Cubs (@Cubs) September 30, 2022

The masterful video takes you on a full game-day ride, capturing the hours leading up to first pitch and the Cubs taking the field. It travels along Murphy’s Bleachers and up Waveland Ave to Gallagher Way. The drone flies through the historic center field scoreboard and into Chicago’s clubhouse.

The video closes out as Seiya Suzuki jogs into right field to begin his warmups.

The Cubs may not be headed to the playoffs, but they still provided a proper and nostalgic “see ya next year” for their fans.

This Drone Flight Through Chicago's Wrigley Field Will Make Anyone a Cubs Fan

How many times did you gasp while watching this drone zip through the smallest of spaces.

Last year, a video of a drone zipping through a bowling alley and squeezing its way into places you never thought a drone could fly, captivated the internet’s attention. The talented team behind that video is back with another unbelievable flight video providing a behind-the-scenes look at Wrigley Field and the surrounding neighborhood. Buckle up!

It doesn’t matter where your major league baseball allegiances may lie, it’s impossible not to appreciate what the Chicago Cubs had to elaborately orchestrate to make this video possible. The drone’s flight starts by following one of Chicago’s iconic “L” trains before dipping down and flying through Murphy’s Bleachers sports pub, around the surrounding neighborhood, right through the cab of a firetruck, and then over some pre-game festivities before entering Wrigley Field.

The tour continues on in the ballpark itself, inside the scoreboard, and even right through the Cubs’ Clubhouse and back offices before following players back out onto the field. The video was created by Sky Candy Studios , whose Instagram account credits Michael Welsh for the incredible drone piloting. Was it all shot in one take? Probably not given some parts of the four-minute video show the stands empty, while it ends with what appears to be a full house on game day. Does that make it any less impressive? Of course not.

We’ve reached out to Sky Candy Studios inquiring about what type of drone and camera was used to film this video, but when sharing this video through its Instagram account , the studio calls out both action cam maker GoPro, and Rotor Riot, a company that builds and sells a variety of different drones, including FPV and cinewhoops, which are small enough to navigate incredibly tight spaces but maneuverable enough to capture incredible footage like this.

Mesmerizing drone video shows immersive experience of Wrigley Field on Cubs game day

CHICAGO - The Chicago Cubs season may have come to an early end this year, but new drone video released by the team shows a spectacular view of The Friendly Confines and its surrounding area.

The Cubs recently posted a video to their YouTube channel showing off the Wrigleyville experience on game day, and it's immersive.

The video was shot by a drone and starts off flying over a CTA train as it brings you through Murphy's Bleachers bar and around the stadium premises. At one point, the drone even dodges a vehicle on the road and flies through the window of a parked firefighter truck.

The drone passes cheering fans, fans playing catch in the streets, and the statue of Harry Caray as you can hear him singing in the background, "Take me out to the Ballgame."

SUBSCRIBE TO FOX 32 CHICAGO ON YOUTUBE

The video also features the voice of Ernie Banks – "Let's play two! – as the drone passes his statue.

The drone eventually makes it inside The Friendly Confines and shows you the view inside the scoreboard. The drone then heads into the Cubs locker room.

The video ends following Seiya Suzuki running onto the field and throwing a ball to the fans in the stands.

Baseball fans far and wide posted on social media about how amazing the video was.

"Man! This video is outstanding! The production that you guys did with the drone fly was just incredible, and reminded me why I am a Cubs fan. A lot of history at "The Friendly Confines" and you guys got an A+ for this," a fan posted in the YouTube comments.

Another baseball fan said, "Brewers fan here and I have to admit this was Amazing! I’ve been to many other parks..Fenway, Camden, Yankee etc. and you Can’t find a better environment for a warm matinee afternoon than Wrigley."

"I’ll say it…..Has to be one of the top ten clips ever uploaded on YouTube. The skill and quality are off the charts along with the perfect subject. Congratulations dude, much deserved," another person posted.

Incredible Wrigley Field drone tour thrills MLB Twitter

The historic stadium, which opened in 1914, has never been seen like this.

Wrigley Field

The Chicago Cubs released a video of Wrigley Field Friday that is a must-see treat not just for Cubs fans, but all baseball fans.

In fact, the four-minute video, filmed using a drone, is so visually striking and well-produced that almost anyone would enjoy it.

The video takes fans everywhere from Wrigleyville outside the stadium to tunnels, concourses, the locker room, scoreboard area … almost everywhere. The Cubs dedicated the fan tribute video, “To the best fans in baseball, You make Wrigley Field the Friendly Confines.”

Wrigley Field opened in 1914, not for the Cubs, but as the home of the Chicago Whales of the Federal League. When the Whales folded a year later, the Cubs moved into the friendly confines in 1916. And 100 years later, the Cubs finally celebrated the stadium’s first world championship, winning the 2016 World Series. The club has fallen on hard times the past couple of seasons, entering the day 71-86. But this amazing video should get fans hyped for next season.

About Arthur Weinstein

Arthur spends his free time traveling around the U.S. to sporting events, state and national parks, and in search of great restaurants off the beaten path.

How They Made That Amazing Drone Video of  Chicago’s Wrigley Field

Wrigley Field is said to be one of the most beautiful ballparks in baseball. Built in 1914 (it’s the second-oldest MLB ballpark still in use. Boston’s Fenway Park is the oldest; it’s 2 years older than Wrigley Field), it’s a national landmark that’s stood the test of time (albeit without some modern amenities added as time went on). Some of its history includes:

  • Babe Ruth’s “called shot” during the 1932 World Series
  • Ernie Banks’ 500th career home run
  • Pete Rose’s 4,191st career hit
  • Tom Glavine’s 300th career win
  • Cubs postseason series clinch for the first time in franchise history
  • Hosting the 1947, 1962 and 1990 All-Star Games

As the 2022 baseball season began to wind down, the Cubs decided to provide a visual tour of the Friendly Confines, as a gift to its fans. But instead of the typical 90-minute walking tours you can buy any time, this tour was done via a drone. It’s a very enjoyable video to watch and in the course of less than a week, it’s had over 7.2 million views on Twitter , more than 1.2 million views on TikTok , over 259,000 views on Facebook , more than 156,000 views on YouTube , nearly 55,000 “likes” on Instagram (number of views not available).

It starts by gliding over the “L” (specifically a Red Line train) as it approaches Addison. Then it goes through Murphy’s Bleachers sports pub, through the surrounding neighborhood, through a firetruck window, in and around Gallagher Way, past the famous Wrigley Field marquee, and then up and over the top of the stadium. The drone then proceeded to give a sweeping view of the stadium, then goes INSIDE the stadium’s iconic scoreboard (SO COOL!), back onto the field, through some of the front offices and the clubhouse, into the locker room, past the batting cages and finally out onto the field (following Seiya Suzuki).

There’s also a bunch of familiar audio clips thrown in (i.e. announcers, fans cheering, “Let there be light!”) that any Cubbies fan would know.

Here’s the 4:07 video, in case you haven’t seen it yet:

So how DID they do that?

The Cubs teamed up with a production studio called Sky Candy Studios , a Minneapolis-based company that’s worked with the likes of familiar names such as HBO, Amazon, 20th Century Fox, T-Mobile, Google, HGTV, the Four Seasons, Best Buy Kia, 3M, etc.

The video was shot in late July, using an FPV-style drone with a stripped down GoPro attachment. Over the course of a Saturday and Sunday, the company’s founder Michael Welsh piloted the small drone (it weighs less than 9 ounces and is made to go through small spaces), coordinating everything with the Cubs’ Media Team.

All told, they did 5 different videos that were stitched together with some modern-day “editing magic.” They did about 5 takes of each video, and the prep for them included talking with the people who would be in each shot.

From WBEZ Chicago:

Inside Murphy’s Bleachers, for example, they let patrons know a drone was coming through and they should ignore it. At first, Welsh said people can’t help but look at the camera flying by them, but by the third take “they’re kind of bored with it.”

Another reason for taking multiple takes of the same footage – so you get footage that doesn’t include mistakes. You know, like the time Welch may or may not have crashed the drone while going through the fire truck (at 0:51 or so).

There’s lots of other ways they made the footage as interesting as it was, and why it went viral. They also explain the reason why they DIDN’T use the drone for that last scene with Suzuki as he runs out to right field. Check out this page of WBEZ’s website for some more of their secrets and fun facts.

Really, it’s an amazing video.

Chicago from the Sky

Known at one time as the America's Second City, Chicago has actually been the third most populous city in the  United States for decades.  The largest urban concentration in the Midwest , the Windy City has a skyline befitting one of America's Alpha Cities ; some would argue that its array of skyscrapers is the best of any of the North American cities , particularly when seen from the vantage point of Lake Michigan.  Check out these amazing drone videos of this great city on the North American  Great Lakes  and you can decide for yourself.   Aerial photo: "Lights On - Downtown Chicago at Sunset" by AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Gianlo .

Here's a haunting aerial view of the city of Chicago in a state of near-shutdown during the Covid-19 coronavirus pandemic in late March, 2020.  The video includes rush hour footage from the Loop district and Michigan Avenue as well as nighttime footage from the Wrigleyville and Boystown neighborhoods.  As the city began to emerge as one of the first non-coastal USA "hot spots", officials from Chicago as well as from the state of Illinois adopted increasingly stringent measures to effect social distancing.

A small drone like the DJI Mavic Pro is the perfect travel accompaniment for a trip to a city like Chicago.  The Loop and the Lake Michigan lakefront are not located in Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) no fly zones, so capturing great aerial footage with this compact drone is quite feasible on a weekend trip.  AirVuz contributor and drone pilot Bill Drones did just that, treating us to this amazing aerial tour, with shots of Buckingham Fountain, Navy Pier, Chicago Harbor, and epic skyscrapers!

Chicago's stockyards, awake - the stockyards.

Chicago became the metropolis it is due to its location relative to the USA's agricultural resources and transportation systems.   This was manifested first and foremost in the massive stockyards which once ringed the city and employed thousands, where animals fattened by grain from the country's farm heartland were converted into consumable meat for shipment east where most of the USA's mouths were located.  Heyheyyoushould gives us a brief but enlightening aerial look at the old stockyard district.

The title of this video doesn't lie; watch it to get an awesome bird's eye perspective of two of the most important Chicago landmarks.  Grant Park is a giant public area on the Chicago waterfront, between the Loop district of Downtown and Lake Michigan.  Its centerpiece is Buckingham Fountain, one of the world's largest, which was completed in 1927.  Navy Pier, north of the park, sits to the east of the Magnificent Mile area.  The pier is the single largest tourist destination in the USA's Midwest.

The Windy City, aka Chicago, Illinois, is known for its cold temperatures and frigid windchills. Sitting off Lake Michigan, the "lake effect" snow and wind is no joke in the winter! Aerial Visual Chicago makes a little fun of their home city by combining Chicago with the infamously cold region of Siberia in the title, dubbing it Chi-beria. This piece was shot in -22F temperatures. Yes, it looks cold, but the smoke stacks, rising sun, and frozen water also leaves the city looking magical.

Chicago became the most important North American transportation hub in the 19th century on the strength of its water connection both to the Great Lakes as well as to the Mississippi River.  The latter connection is through the Chicago River, which once emptied into Lake Michigan but whose flow was reversed in the mid-1800's to connect to a series of different canals which provided a link to the Mississippi.  In this drone video by FoxFlight 2020, you'll fly along stretches of the Chicago River, which flows through the heart of downtown.

From new faces to new food, your guide to Wrigley Field for the 2023 season

Dansby Swanson and Cody Bellinger are among the new acquisitions on the field, while a new burger and vodka seltzer hit the concession stands.

Wrigley Field Fan’s guide

Holy cow! Baseball is back in Wrigleyville.

The Cubs host the Milwaukee Brewers at 1:20 p.m. Thursday at Wrigley Field to open the 2023 season. Some new players are expected to make their Cubs debut, but fan favorites like catcher Willson Contreras are gone and outfielder Seiya Suzuki is on the injured list .

In addition to the fresh faces, there are many new items at the ballpark, including Small Cheval burgers in the bleachers and a new trophy room with the 2016 World Series hardware. Here’s what you need to know before heading to The Friendly Confines this season.

Are the Cubs going to be good? The Cubs made some major changes to the roster after last season’s lackluster performance. Dansby Swanson, Cody Bellinger, Trey Mancini and Jameson Taillon are among the most high-profile acquisitions. In fact, the Cubs signed more new players in the off-season than any other team in the league, according to Cubs Insider . However, it’s unclear if the shakeup will translate to a winning record. As Sun-Times sports columnist Rick Telander wrote , “We won’t know for sure until the games have reached a steady pace, say by mid-May.”

11 Tips On How To Enjoy A Cubs Game — From Fans

wrigley field drone tour

What are MLB’s new rules? Three major rule changes were approved during the off season to speed up games. The most noticeable being a pitch clock.

Crispy Chicken Bao Bun

What’s new at Wrigley? Let’s start with food. In addition to Small Cheval burgers making their Wrigley debut in the bleachers, here are some other new concession items:

Loaded Greek fries with gyro meat, feta, olives, tomatoes, red onions and more. Served up in a souvenir helmet.

A split bratwurst filled with ground beef, cheddar, mustard and sauerkraut known as a “burger brat.”

Crispy chicken bao buns with Thai chili sauce, cucumber, arugula and carrot.

Crispy chicken torta with cabbage and cotija cheese.

Quesbirria with barbacoa, onions and cheese on a flour tortilla with ancho chili sauce.

On the beverage front, fans can now buy a 26 ounce beer in a souvenir bat cup. Coke products will also be served throughout the stadium starting this season. Finally, there’s a new outdoor space on the terrace level dubbed the “NUTRL Zone” featuring NUTRL Vodka Seltzer.

What can I bring with me? You can bring a bag to the ballpark, but it has to be small — no bigger than 16 x 16 x 8 inches. If you pack an umbrella, that also has to be small and can’t have metal tips. Fans can also bring sealed plastic bottles and food in disposable bags inside the stadium.

What can’t I bring? Backpacks (including the clear ones) are not allowed, although there are exceptions for medical bags and diaper bags. Some other things you’re going to want to leave at home include outside alcohol; aerosol sprays, including sunscreen; full-size baseball bats; and glass or metal food/drink containers.

How much does it cost to go to a game? You can find tickets as cheap as $9 on the team’s website for weekday games early in the season, and there are ways to save though promotional offers or weeknight deals .

Can I just tune in from home? To watch on TV, you’ll need the Marquee Sports Network , available in the Chicago region with Xfinity cable, DirectTV/DirecTV Stream and the Fubo streaming service. Other popular streaming services like  Hulu + Live TV and YouTube TV do not carry Marquee. And to make it more complicated, some Friday night games will air on Apple TV+, which requires a subscription. You can also tune in to Cubs games on the radio on 670 AM The Score.

Chicago Cubs jersey's are sale at a Cubs store ahead of opening day.

Wrigleyville 101

Getting to the ballpark : Taking public transportation is probably your best bet for getting to Wrigley. CTA bus #152 (Addison) and #22 (Clark) will both drop you off at the intersection of Clark and Addison, right by the famous marquee. Or, take the Red Line to the Addison station to exit closest to the stadium.

If you drive to a game, there are some  designated lots nearby , but spots are limited. Fans can also  park remotely  for free during night and weekend games and take a shuttle to the stadium.

For fans who roll up to Wrigley on two wheels: There’s a free bike valet located on Addison, in the alley east of the main CTA Red Line entrance. It opens three hours before game time and closes one hour after a game ends. Pro tip: Take a picture of your valet ticket, in case you lose it inside the stadium.

Chicago Cubs mascot Clark holds a Chicago Cubs 'W' flag while running on the field

Where to go outside the stadium: After you get your obligatory photo of the Wrigley Field sign, grab a pre-game bite or brew. There are the classics, like Murphy’s Bleachers , Cubby Bear and Sluggers . There’s also the row of Wrigleyville newcomers, like Big Star and Smoke Daddy . And, not only will they be inside the stadium, but Small Cheval is also opening a new location at the corner of Clark and Waveland. Then there’s Gallagher Way, the open-air space adjacent to Wrigley, which ticket holders can visit during the game and reenter the stadium.

Other events happening at Wrigley this summer: Dead & Company, Bruce Springsteen and Fall Out Boy are all on the stadium’s summer concert lineup. Check out the full list here .

If you’re going to Wrigley for the first time this summer, you can remember your trip to the ballpark with a personalized “first timer’s certificate” available in a booth on the main concourse directly behind home plate.
