Nick Kroll has established himself as one of today’s most sought-after creators, writers, producers, and actors in film and television. In 2017, Nick made his Broadway debut in OH, HELLO ON BROADWAY which ran for 138 performances and received rave reviews. He starred as “Gil Faizon” opposite John Mulaney as “George St. Geegland,” the story of two elderly men from the Upper West Side of Manhattan. The show was filmed for a Netflix Original Comedy Special which is currently available for streaming. Kroll and Mulaney released the first season of their podcast, OH, HELLO: The P’dcast, in Spring 2020.

Comedian and actor Nick Kroll does a little bit of everything.

The talented performer writes and stars in the critically-acclaimed animated series “Big Mouth,” acted opposite John Mulaney in the hit Broadway show “Oh, Hello,” and this June, he’ll be returning to the stage for a quick eight-show stand up comedy tour .

Kroll’s tour, titled “The Middle-Aged Boy Tour” began in 2019. Last November, he sold out Carnegie Hall as part of the New York Comedy Festival.

Comedian Nick Kroll is returning to standup — and doing it via Netflix , the home of his animated comedy “ Big Mouth .” Kroll’s first stand-up special in a decade — and his first for Netflix — is titled “Nick Kroll: Little Big Boy,” and will premiere globally on September 27.

The special will air a month before the Season 6 return of “Big Mouth,” which returns Oct. 28. For “Little Big Boy,” Kroll shot the special in June at the Warner Theatre in Washington, D.C.

“But I’ve always done stand up,” he said. “It’s always been in the background. It was 2018 and my girlfriend at the time, now my wife was like, ‘why don’t you do a special? How come you haven’t done an hour?’ I didn’t really have a good reason. Except of being busy with other stuff. And at that point, I decided to really commit to do a special.”

Kroll toured in 2019, preparing his material for the show — which he planned to shoot in June 2020. But then the COVID-19 pandemic hit. “The lockdown happened and shut down all stand up,” he said. “But then also, a ton of life stuff happened to me. The special, even before the pandemic, was was thematically about this feeling where I had turned 40, and yet there were still elements to myself that I felt were not entirely grown up. So I felt sort of in between. And then the pandemic happened and I got married and had a child.”

Those big life changes fed into those themes of figuring out what it’s like to be a grown adult, but not always feeling that way. Kroll went back out and tried new material that reflected his new life, and figure out were it could be integrated into his existing show.

The end result is a piece that Kroll believed was “more honest and revelatory and vulnerable than historically I had been in stand up.” And in some ways that makes it feel like a good fit for fans of “Big Mouth,” which is loosely based on his and co-creator Andrew Goldberg’s adolescent years.

‘Doing ‘Big Mouth’ really has been been such an exercise in vulnerability,” Kroll said. “There are a lot of autobiographical elements to it. And I think the lesson I learned with it was that audiences really connected to the more honest, truthful, vulnerable material. And if I tried to do that on my stand up, that I would hopefully connect with people, that there be the opportunity for a deeper connection with the audience.”

As he mines more of his personal life, Kroll said he’s still “trying to figure out that line with everything with stand up. You want to talk about what’s going on in your life. So how do you find the line of what can I talk about? What can I share that is respectful of other people’s personalized private lives inside of that? I have no answer for it, but I think it’s something that a lot of comedians have to make choices along the way about what you’re going to share, especially with a kid who hasn’t signed up for any of this.”

“Nick Kroll: Little Big Boy” is executive produced by Kroll, John Irwin, Casey Spira and Christie Smith. It is directed by Bill Benz. Kroll chose D.C. to shoot the special because he attended Georgetown University, and knows what that city’s audience is like.

“It has always been a town that I feel a strong connection to. It’s also just a great comedy town,” Kroll said. “They are really smart. And the Warner Theatre, I’ve performed at a few times. It’s just a beautiful theater and it’s got a nice history to it. It felt like a home team, without having to be in New York or LA.”

Kroll’s other credits at Netflix include the “Big Mouth” spinoff “Human Resources.” “Big Mouth” is exec produced by Kroll, Andrew Goldberg, Jennifer Flackett and Mark Levin; the quartet also make up the animation production company Brutus Pink, wich just reupped its overall content deal with Netflix. Under that pact, Brutus Pink will develop and produce new animated projects for Netflix.

It was kind of the tease of the last season of  Big Mouth that there is more to the world of Hormone Monsters and Shame Wizards than what we’ve seen terrorize or inspire the human teens going through the nightmare that is puberty. Thus, that will be the core of the spin-off series  Human Resources .

The world of Human Resources will explore all sorts of Depression Kitties, Logic Rocks, Grati-Toads, and much much more and how off-the-rails their world is as well. Per usual with Big Mouth (or shall we say the Big Mouth Cinematic Universe ), it’s stacked with a bright, shining, star studded voice cast that includes Aidy Bryant, Nick Kroll, Maya Rudolph, Brandon Kyle Goodman, David Thewlis, Randall Park, Keke Palmer, Lupita Nyong’o, Rosie Perez, Ali Wong, Helen Mirren, Henry Winkler, Janelle Monáe, and Hugh Jackman.

Netflix Is A Joke Fest Is Back (and Even Bigger?) for 2022

One of the first major comedy festivals to get postponed indefinitely because of COVID-19 was Netflix’s gigantic celebration of comedy that brought out all their biggest stars and their accompanying constellations, Netflix Is a Joke Fest . It was also going to be the first big comedy festival in LA in years (since Riot LA in DTLA ended its run).

For 2020, Netflix seemingly spared no expense to make the biggest comedy festival they could in Los Angeles and it was heartbreaking to see none of that happen in 2020 and have no idea if and when it would happen again.

Well, on this side of the pandemic, Netflix Is a Joke Fest was just announced to be back on, running from Thurs. Apr. 28th-Sun. May 8th , and Netflix is making sure to make it even bigger it would appear. Their stable of venues includes LA’s biggest (which wasn’t planned for 2020) including Dodger Stadium, Staples Center (now known as Crypto.com Arena), The Forum, and The Hollywood Bowl on top of beloved LA comedy haunts, old and new, The Comedy Store, The Hollywood Improv, Dynasty Typewriter, and The Elysian.

The top billing for the line-up is also more robust than we remember. On the schedule, the streamer has David Letterman, Tina Fey/Amy Poehler, Ali Wong, Eddie Izzard, Larry David, Wanda Sykes, Nick Kroll, Seth Rogen’s Table Reads, Marc Maron, Jane Fonda/Lily Tomlin, John Mulaney, Mike Birbiglia, Conan O’Brien Needs a Friend, Colin Quinn, Mike Myers, Chris Rock, Ilana Glazer, Jimmy Carr, Taylor Tomlinson, Margaret Cho, Ben Schwartz, and Kevin Smith.

Oh yeah, there’s Dave Chappelle too as well as Aziz Ansari who are two of Netflix’s biggest gets within their talent pool, but have had the “cancellation” treatment. We have no doubt that their shows will sell out.

As they are billing it as the “biggest comedy event in history*, *probably” ( SF Sketchfest does have way more programming and the Edinburgh Fringe is bigger than most festivals, period.), they’ve also filled out their line-up with plenty of folks (including many of our absolute favorites) that you shouldn’t miss if you’re putting the money down for  Netflix Is a Joke Fest . That includes Todd Glass, Melissa Villaseñor, Guy Branum, Natalie Palamides doing Laid, Beth Stelling, James Adomian, Robin Tran, Mae Martin, and Sam Jay .

Mel Brooks Will Finally Get to Make History of the World Part 2 (as a Series on Hulu)

Almost more unbelievable than 1981 being 40 years ago, Mel Brooks is going to finally have the follow up to his  History Part of the World Part 1 and it’s going to be a series on Hulu.

Says Mel Brooks, “I can’t wait to once more tell the real truth about all the phony baloney stories the world has been conned into believing are History!” We wonder how he’ll cover the rise of disinformation in the 2010s.

We’ll be throughly curious to see what Brooks’ sense of humor, which is so thankfully intact at his advanced age of 95, will be like in 2022. The first movie got mixed reviews, but, perhaps, something as ponderous as the history of the world, even in parody form, will be better presented as a series. Also, the mix of creatives involved should prove for a fascinating blend of generations of comedy. Including on the producing/writing team are such comedy luminaries as Nick Kroll, Wanda Sykes, and Ike Barinholtz to name a few and, with that in mind, we wonder if the series can go even bluer than the original movie.

We’ll just have to wait until later in 2022 as production starts in spring next year.

Big Mouth Season 5 Trailer Introduces Hate Worms and Love Bugs

Hormone Monsters, Shame Wizards, Depression Kitties, and more have been whimsical, absurdly funny creatures of the  Big Mouth  universe that, as far as we know, goes as hard in on truthful, uncompromising humor of what puberty and adolescence is  really  like as any other movie or TV series has in the history of the moving image.

Through four seasons, the celebrated adult animated series has been so hysterically crass and yet so heart-wrenching, yet so sweet all in one package and always bringing new ways to marry magical realism and the unflinching truth, often based on the lives of its creators/writers.

The upcoming fifth season of  Big Mouth seems like it’ll carry such a hallowed torch of this hormone driven fairy tale world and include new additional anthropomorphic concepts as cute-ish creatures, Love Bugs and Hate Worms . We have no doubt that’ll hit a nostalgic emotional nerve just like they have throughout the past four seasons.

You can get a taste of what that’s like here in the official trailer for season 5 of  Big Mouth , just released today (and, as such, we’ll be curious to see if this will enter the fray of Netflix’s growing firestorm Chappelle controversy as other Netflix comedy talent has lashed out at the streaming giant in response to Chappelle’s The Closer ).

The New York Comedy Festival Announces Its 2021 Headliners

Michelle Wolf, Nick Kroll, Colin Quinn, Marc Maron, Megan Stalter, Michelle Buteau, Norm MacDonald, Gary Gulman, Ronny Chieng, Brian Regan, Alok, Smart Funny & Black Live!, Bill Maher, Andrew Santino, Vir Das, and Tim Dillon are all set to be the top billing of this year’s New York Comedy Festival, which is, indeed happening in person from Nov. 8th-14th .

Though the Delta variant continues to surge COVID-19 throughout America, it would seem that the comedy festival slated for the fall are still in pushing forward, setting the stage for, perhaps, the normal annual schedule of SF Sketchfest, SXSW, Edinburgh Fringe, etc. all coming back to their festivities in person. While that is already quite the mix of headlining acts, that is only the tip of the iceberg as there is a cornucopia of other shows and performers that will take part in NYC’s annual big time comedy shin dig.

Big Mouth’s Season 4 Trailer Is Here (and Introduces the Anxiety Mosquito)

Though it is one of the most explicit animated series of all time,  Big Mouth  has proven over three seasons that it also has plenty of heart, depth, and humanity in following the horrific time that is puberty and playing it out hilariously with a flair of magic realism.

Normally, waiting for this fourth season to come out would have been a little excruciating, but there has been plenty of things in 2020 that kept our minds more than occupied (probably overloaded to be quite frank). So, the arrival of an entire new season of Big Mouth  on Fri. Dec. 4th on Netflix is the second of early holiday gifts (the first being a Trump loss of course).

This trailer promises a season that delivers on the high bar that  Big Mouth has set for itself as well as introducing a new imaginary character that will surely hit us all way to close to home, the “anxiety mosquito”

Pick of the Day: Brighter Comedy (BIG SUNDAY Benefit)

If you can believe it (and we hope that you can because of how much we’ve got listed at our site), there is still plenty of comedy going on and lots of shows are raising money for great causes that are so deserving of your support.

One such event is happening this weekend called Brighter! It’ll be an atypical talk show that features Mickey and Robin Bright ( Dannah Phirman, Seth Morris ) who are divorcing while in quarantine and getting in touch with the likes of Maria Bamford, Nick Kroll, Jason Mantzoukas, Kate Micucci, Phil LaMarr, Carl Tart, Betsy Sodaro and more playing their neighbors in their “artist commune apartment building” to check-in/get advice to cheer up, especially given their situation. For those missing the sort of fare you’d get to see at UCB in the before times, this might be what you’re looking for.

The show will be in support of BIG SUNDAY , a Los Angeles-based non-profit, organizing free meal delivery for doctors, nurses and staffers who work in the ER in LA. Anyone can watch the show, but they will be taking donations.

Nick Kroll and John Mulaney’s indelible creations, Gil Faizon and George St. Geegland, return once again to bring us the best of their geriatric tomfoolery and charming pronunciations with a podcast (definitely an essential business right now).

Called OH, HELLO: the P’dcast, Faizon and St. Geegland pick up where they left off with a supposed podcast project they had started years ago (back when they just had their acclaimed Broadway run and Netflix special). Already, there’s plenty of mischief afoot from just the trailer and ep. 1 and we have no doubt that more of anything from Kroll and Mulaney will help us keep calm and “win the quarantine”.

The trailer for this upcoming season 3 of Big Mouth certainly makes good on that notion. On top of all of that though, it would seems that there’s a bit of a Queer Eye crossover that attempts Queer-eye-ing Coach Steve. Per usual, it’s going to be one hell of a season.

As you can clearly see in the flyer above, that headline could go way longer as the more fan-focused JFL festival in Toronto , JFL42 , is packed with top shelf talent that covers so many eras, styles, sensibilities, etc. of comedy that it might be worth making the trek out to Toronto to see all of that in one week, especially if you don’t live in LA or NYC.

At His Best, Nick Kroll Is a Mischievous Little Demon

You can’t say Nick Kroll doesn’t love a voice. His new Netflix special, Little Big Boy , is full of weird little voices and small impressions, and they’re some of the most confident, assured parts of the hour. At their best, Kroll’s stories are rooted in his own experience but are explored from several angles with narrative asides and other characters who intrude on the action, and there is a feeling of relief when he can relax into the performance of someone other than himself. He plays his mom, his dad, a 4-year-old who’s stalling at bedtime, and — most frequently — exaggerated, bizarro versions of himself in various mortifying scenes from his past. He’s so good in those moments, especially when he plays himself. The characters are specific, novel, and fun , in a way that some of Kroll’s material otherwise is not. Sometimes his performances have enough buoyancy to keep the whole joke afloat. Toward the end, though, the special starts to founder.

If there’s anything Kroll likes more than doing a fun, vaguely demonic voice, it’s telling a poop joke. Who can blame him? He’s hardly alone , and the scatological portions of Little Big Boy are some of the most striking, evocatively told segments in the hour. These are obviously things Kroll has spent a great deal of time considering: the causes of diarrhea, the futility of trying to fight it, the euphemisms, the universality, the shivering, the hair rising on your arms. Kroll has a mastery of the whole experience. He has keen observational powers, but in Little Big Boy, they are almost wholly devoted to what it feels like when your bowels go awry. The first story (childhood karate class) sets the tone. The second one (restaurant and then car) escalates the experience. By the third explosive-diarrhea joke, though, you come away so sorry that Kroll has spent this much of his life enduring and meditating on this particular feeling.

The shame of those experiences and Kroll’s depression after a particularly brutal breakup are the highlights of Little Big Boy . Without the image of Kroll standing onstage, the stories could almost be scenes from Big Mouth , the Netflix series about adolescence that Kroll co-created and stars in as a voice actor. The special also shares some of Big Mouth ’s fondness for letting a supernatural figure comment on a character’s shame. In Big Mouth, it’s several hormone monsters; in Little Big Boy , it’s Kroll’s inner critical monologue, which speaks through the voice of Kroll doing an impression of British actor Jason Statham. The accent wobbles sometimes, which may be an issue for a realistic dramatic performance, but it works quite well for stand-up. Kroll-as-Statham poses more of a writing problem than a performance issue, however. The idea is fine, and the first few times he shows up are entertaining. After a few Statham appearances, though, he starts to wear out his welcome largely because he doesn’t have much that’s new to say.

The same is true for Little Big Boy more generally. The momentum of those opening stories starts to falter toward the end as Kroll shifts into a more straightforward retelling of the past several years of his life. After the embarrassing poop experiences of his youth and a tour through why we hate our mothers (conclusion: They are annoying), Kroll starts catching up to his more recent history and is much less confident about how to mine these stories for humor. He enters into a stream of nice, superficial wife-and-baby stories, and it feels as if he’s uncertain about where to take an off-ramp back into a more fully realized, well-built closing joke. The one wholly developed joke in the final stretch of the special comes from a time early in his relationship with his wife when they’re going for a drive in Italy. Eventually, yes, of course, it becomes one of the poop jokes. But before then, there’s a little throwaway moment when Kroll gives a bit of exposition: “We go to the Hertz Bologna, which means, ‘My pee-pee hurts.’” Then he giggles and his entire body appears to transform into a strange, elfish demon. “Hee hee hee!” he says, cowering behind the stool that has been holding his glass of water. “You can’t see me behind this stool!” He’s proud of, mortified by, and delighted with his stupid little pee-pee joke. He’s impish! He’s an odd little weirdo!

At every moment, Little Big Boy wants to embrace that energy, that mischievous, nose-thumbing, thrilled, mortified feeling of making a truly stupid or crude joke and then having to be seen as someone who just made that joke. When Kroll pulls it off, the special is a fun demonstration of his whole comedic identity. When he starts to run out of steam or feels hampered by the comparative adultness of jokes about being a husband and father, you wonder why he can’t transform back into that imp coyly grinning behind a stool. It would be much more fun and more memorable than the shrug Kroll offers at the end.

Telluride’s favorite President s’ weekend tradition is back for the 24th year— a hilarious four-day weekend of laughter with the most talented performers in the world of comedy. The Sheridan Arts Foundation welcomes established stars and new faces to the Sheridan Opera House stage for a unique mix of stand up, sketch and improv. The 24th festival features Telluride Comedy Fest regulars including Nick Kroll, returning after a year off, Rob Huebel, Brian Huskey, Rebecca Kohler, Jason Mantzoukas, Joe Mande, Seth Morris, Hannah Pilkes, and Paul Scheer. All proceeds benefit the historic Sheridan Opera House a 501©(3) non-profit.

Welcome to a weekend of laughter that’ll leave your abs as sore as your face from smiling! Here’s the 2024 comedy festival schedule:

Thursday: Locals’ Night

Comedy Fest kicks off with Locals’ Night, an evening of hilarious, irreverent humor about the quirks of Telluride and the people who call our weird little ski town home. The night ends with a set of improv from all the performers. In person: Rob Huebel, Brian Huskey, Hannah Pilkes, Rebecca Kohler, Jason Mantzoukas, Seth Morris and Paul Scheer.

Free AfterSHOW with The Fig in the SHOW Bar:

Following Thursday’s ticketed event in the theater, The Fig hosts a FREE AfterSHOW. The event honors Silas Berrier, a long time Comedy Fest family member who passed away in 2021, with this night of laughter and locals performing original standup and sketch in our SHOW Bar. Performers include founder and host Miranda Beck, Marissa Mattys and Catherine Cypher. The Fig Telluride established in August of 2022. At its core, founder Miranda Beck, wanted to bring people together to perform art in a variety of ways.

Friday: An Evening of Stand-Up and Improv

Hosted by the one and only Nick Kroll, get ready for a night packed with hilarity featuring the brilliant Rebecca Kohler and the side-splitting Joe Mande doing Stand-up. And as if that’s not enough, brace yourselves for an epic improv showdown. In person with the fantastic Rob Huebel, Brian Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, Seth Morris, Paul Scheer, Nick Kroll, Hannah Pilkes, and Rebecca Kohler. It’s comedy gold!

Saturday: Sketch Comedy and Improv Extravaganza

Hold on to your seats for a night of sketch comedy and improv featuring ALL of our incredible performers. Trust us, you won’t want to miss this comedic masterpiece in person with Rob Huebel, Joe Mande, Brian Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, Seth Morris, Nick Kroll, Paul Scheer, Hannah Pilkes, and Rebecca Kohler. Get ready to laugh until your sides beg for mercy!

Sunday: Stand-Up and Improv Spectacular

Cap off the weekend with more laughs as Nick Kroll takes the stage again with opener Hannah Pilkes for a night of stand-up. And yes, you guessed it – the laughs continue in person with Nick Kroll, Joe Mande, Brian Huskey, Jason Mantzoukas, Seth Morris, Paul Scheer, Hannah Pilkes, and Rebecca Kohler. Stick around for a final improv set that’ll showcase the best in the business. It’s the perfect way to end this comedy marathon! HOME OF THE TELLURIDE COMEDY FESTIVAL
