The Parc Omega – A Drive-Through Safari in Canada

15. September 2021 Categories: Travel reports , North America , Canada

We are always happy when we can visit during our travel the many different zoos in the world. On our 670-kilometer journey from Tadoussac on the St. Lawrence River to Ottawa in the southeastern part of the province of Ontario, we visited a very special zoo: Parc Omega – a safari park where we could even drive through independently with our large camper .

Things to know about Parc Omega

Omega Park was founded in 1985 and opened its doors to the public in 1991. The park’s original concept was a place to spot North American wildlife on a 2,200-acre site in the region’s natural landscape. Gradually, the park was expanded taking into account nature, so that today more than 20 different animal species can be observed in their natural environment. The aim is to show visitors the beauty and simplicity of nature while providing unforgettable and respectful experiences with the wildlife, culture and history of Québec and Canada.

The location of Parc Omega in Canada

Parc Omega is open every day of the year, including public holidays. Depending on the season, the opening hours are different, usually the park is open on weekdays from 10 am to 5 pm and on weekends from 9 am to 5 pm, with the last entrance possible at 4 pm. Due to pandemic, it is currently only possible to buy the entrance tickets online . You can therefore not just go there and buy tickets at the ticket booth, unless you have an annual pass or other free tickets.

Our tip: Buy one (or preferably several) bags of carrots in a supermarket beforehand. These may be fed to the deer and moose. Alternatively, you can also buy carrots in the visitor center.

On the following overview map you can see very nicely how the Parc Omega is laid out. Along a route of about 12 km you will pass lakes, meadows, small valleys, forests and rocky hills. You can discover many different species of wild animals such as.B beavers, moose, raccoons, wolves, coyotes, musk oxen, deer, turtles, wild boars, red foxes, ibex, caribou, black bears, moose, wild turkeys and bison.

With our caravan on Drive-Through Safari

The Parc Omega is a drive-through park . So you stay in the car as a visitor and drive on a wide, well-signposted path through the park – this is even possible with a motorhome or with school buses. In addition, there are some designated places where you can leave the car, e.B. at hiking trails, playgrounds or picnic areas.

Reindeer, Moose, Deer & Roe Deer

Most of the animals in the park – in addition to countless wild geese – are reindeer, moose, deer and roe deer. You can find them almost everywhere in the park. The special thing is that they all walk around completely freely and are totally trusting. As soon as you stop somewhere with the car, it does not take long for the first animals to come to the car and wait longingly for a carrot.

Black Bears & Cinnamon Bears

The highlight of our park visit was waiting for us at the end of the trail: a group of black bears and cinnamon bears. The black bear is the most common bear species in Canada and is perfectly equipped for the cold winter due to its thick, shiny coat. Although black bears are omnivores, they eat 75% plant-based. One color form and subspecies of the American black bear is the so-called cinnamon bear, of which there are two pairs in Omega Park. Cinnamon bears are native primarily to the central, eastern, and western areas of the United States and Canada. The most striking difference between cinnamon bears and all other black bears is their brown or reddish-brown fur, which is a bit reminiscent of cinnamon. We were able to convince ourselves that cinnamon bears are excellent climbers. The sight of this big bear in the tree was really gigantic and we could hardly believe our eyes. A great experience!

In total, we spent just over 2 hours in the park. We had the impression that all animals are housed in sufficiently large enclosures, many even run around wild and are therefore not really locked up.

Parc Safari Canada: The Best Safari Experience with Kids

Parc Safari Canada is a zoo including Drive through safari in Hemmingford, Quebec, Canada. When heading to Park Safari, Montreal is not far away. At Parc Safari English speaking staff are available though out the park. During out time of our trip there were no Park Safari renovations and everything was open. In adition to my Park Safari reviews I have included some tips to help you plan and make the most of your trip.

  • They will hand you a Park Safari map at the entrance but if they don’t hand you one make sure to ask for one.
  • Bring heads of lettuce and celery- enough to fill a medium sized cooler. we went through the lettuce the quickest and they seemed to like that better than the celery. I think we had about 5 celery and 5 heads of lettuce we probably could have don 10 heads of lettuce.
  • Make sure you rash-on your food so it makes it through the full safari.
  • When we visited you were allowed to open your minivan door and moon roofs. We chose not to open our van door as the animals were already coming into the windows.
  • Don’t miss the Lion walk through.
  • Bring your swim suits and towels and enjoy their waterpark
  • Arrive early. The cars in the front determine the speed so if you are behind a long line of cars it will take time to go through.

Drive Thru Safari at Parc Safari Canada

The Drive thru safari is separate so after you finish up your drive you can choose to eat lunch in your car in the parking lot prior to entering the rest of the Parc or even head inside where there’s a food court. Even if you don’t have lunch inside I recommend grabbing some poutine before you leave.

The lion walk is a great experience we walk through a glass tunnel in the middle of the lion enclosure. it’s the closest we have ever been to lions.

Raise Walk Way to Giraffe Area

Near the safari entrance is a raised walk way that leads you buy the cheetahs, Rhinos and ends with the Giraffes. At the giraffe area you c an buy lettuce to feed them. I believe it was $3 and it was enough for us all to share.

Aqua Parc at Parc Safari Canada

There’s a small waterpark but it’s great for hot days and to fill your afternoon. There’s a lazy river, Wave Ball and slides. It’s a small park but you can definitely spend an hour or 1 here.

Best place on the border of Canada and New York!! We absolutely loved it!! They have a great water park and you can spend all day here. The prices and taxes are always higher in Canada so it's $50 per person adult. Highly recommended for families and the Safari drive was the best part!! You can feed everybody!!! I loved feeding the giraffes, deer, buffalo, ankole watusi and amazing exotic animals. This is an experience you will never forget!!

Not my favourite zoo / water park , especially for the prices . The kids enjoyed it as it is a change from our regular go too places. A-lot of flies the last time we visited . Overall nice place , well maintained but with limited animals and short car tour . Could visit again if tickets are on special or part of a deal.

parc safari in canada

We headed there on a Saturday afternoon. Planned was picnic and safari. No waterpark. It was my first time there. Also, make sure you go to the bathroom before you start the safari. The good: Active animals, walks around cars or lays in the road. Safari has a good traveled road snd moves easily (normally). Lots of picnic spots. Huge parking space. Lots of restaurants. The bad: Waiting before going in park is long (45 minutes at least). Safari shows age. Some of the signs were water damaged and it shows, they could have been replaced. Not enough staff for safari part. Some people just think about themselves and do not care about others (parked cars, blocked roads, etc.), so get ready for that. In restaurant area, some places are abandoned and very messy (we sat at an IA stand, and the place was filthy). Covid restrictions: Although they tell people to keep their windows closed and not to feed the animals not to make them sick, people did it anyway. In the restaurant area, there is no true social distancing. Pretty much respected in the tunnel area. Some places have gel disinfectant. The experience was nice snd you can take good pictures through a closed car window anyway. Sadly, people are still inconsiderate towards others, even in time of pandemic. I still suggest to do this once, but this is not a thing you should do every year.

I enjoyed Parc Safari immensely when I was a kid, came back again in my teens and now in my mid twenties, got to re-experience it with just as much delight. We came during labor day weekend and it wasn't actually packed. There is a calendar on the site that tells you when it's high or low season, pricing varies along with the opening hours. Just like going to any other big attraction, it is on the pricey side, however there are numerous discounts offered. CAA members benefit from 15% off, if you have Air Miles, it's 10% off and there is regularly a 10$ off coupon published in flyers or online, a quick googling will bring it up. There is also the option of purchasing your ticket online, in advance to get a special rate. Now the safari portion is what everyone comes here for and it was highly worth it. On an average day, it takes about 45 mins to 1 hour to complete the trail and we encountered plenty animals that were willing to approach us, they were docile, we were able to take tons of photos, pet and feed them easily. The parc sells little boxes of dry animal food, but I recommend bringing your own fruits and veggies. Only carrots, celeri and lettuce are permitted. We got big bags of carrots at Costco for 5$ and found that highly worth it. It's easier to wave carrots at the animals, they saw us from far and immediately came to our car instead of those with the dry food. It also keeps your hands cleaner, otherwise you will experience lots of slobber. Once you're done with the safari, there is a bit amount of walking to do to see the rest of the animals- I love that there were plenty of rest spots, shaded areas and picnic tables to encourage people to bring their own food. That's definitely something we should have done because the restaurant options on site are measly and overpriced. The little village "souk" area where the boutique and restaurants are, is in serious need of remodeling. Along with the rides, they haven't been updated since the park was open 40 years ago it seems. The food court is an exposed area so it's very hot and there were flies everywhere. I bought a tiny ham and cheese wrap which was over 7$ and a poutine, which only comes in one size, also 7$. The great thing though is that it's not just a zoo, there is a fairly big area dedicated to its water park- They are divided in different zones, you can go tubing in one, just lounge by the kiddy pool or run under the misters and spray jets in another. Memorable experiences for sure, I think everyone should visit once in their lifetime, if you can't make it to a real safari tour in Africa ;)

A great family activity for a hot day. We had a corporate family day at my work so they treated us to a visit plus we had a BBQ. Hemmingford by location is a good distance away for us who live on the the north shore of a Montreal however we had a blast! Price for the day is a bit steep (adults $38.95 +tax kids $25.95+tax) but these attractions (Parc Safari, Grandby Zoo, water parks etc) must verify their pricing off one another as it's amazingly similar. If you live on the south shore or near the US border I'd recommend grabbing a seasons pass ($60+tax adult or kid). The safari tour where the animals who come up to your vehicle is pretty cool. However I wonder if they get aggressive, how much damage they could do to your car. Some of these animals have humongous horns. The animals must be fed nonstop by patrons all day, then they go lie in the heat. We purchased two boxes of what looked like dry dog food and the animals we encountered ate it right from your hand. We saw some cars that brought a big bag of carrots (I'd strongly recommend). Also bring hand sanitizer and don't be afraid to have camel drool and elk snot on your car. It will happen. They did also have a small petting zoo area which was okay for the smaller kids. Full of bunny rabbits, pigs, chickens peacocks and other barnyard animals. I even had the chance to take my daughter for a pony ride which she loved. $4 for a very short ride. The other pretty cool area to visit was the lion enclosure and monkey area. They had lions, tigers and monkeys. The lions and tigers were basically sleeping when we were there (other than a quick up and down to get some water). The monkeys were hilarious and great entertainment. Definitely check this area out. The splash pad and water park is what we really enjoyed. It really was a huge water complex that is well worth it! A perfect energy drain for kids 5-12 years old who have never ending energy. Grab a seat on one of the hills that overlooks the whole place! They do have some lounger chairs but they do get taken fast. We were able to score two which was nice! There is a canteen which serves beer (even Sam Adams yes!), ice cream and coffee and other snacks where there are restrooms between the two water parks. Pricing is a bit high but this is expected. Overall it's a great family activity for the day. Whether you believe some of these animals should be in a zoo is your opinion. I'm mixed on it However it's a great experience for your kids to learn about animals.

So English is not a thing here. Any thing that has and "English" option is non functional yet the French systems seem to work perfectly. Don't come here if you don't know French.

Photo of Roger H.

It is not cheap but it was an amazing day of family fun. There is so much to do. I have never had a lion over top of my head before...I have never had an Ostrich poke its head in the door of my car and peck me for more food (It was cute not painful)...and never had a Bison slobber black goo on my hand after eating food from it. There is an amazing water park that is included in the price. My key advice: You can go back and forth to your car and parking is not that far away. There are nearby picnic spots and throughout the park. DO take your own picnic lunch. Saves money and your food is better...truly.

Photo of Slava O.

My wife and I were in northern Vermont and decided to show our kids this Safari. We have taken my parents along as well. As soon as we started driving through, it started raining real hard. We went through the driving portion of this trip, but were obviously unable to get to the on-foot portion of it. I went to customer service area hoping to get a rain check to come back some time later in the season. I was told that all agents and supervisors are busy as they were overloaded with customers getting some discount on their passes. I was advised to send an email instead to their customer service which I did right away. Again, all I was hoping for was an opportunity to come back another day, when weather is better so that I could actually see and show my family what we already paid for. Today I got the following response: "Hello Slava we hope you are doing fine. We dont give tickets due to rainy weather. We were open all day long. You have to go to internet to check the weather before comming to the Park Safari. Service à la Clientèle" What a customer service "excellence"! I guess, if you see anything other then perfect weather forecast (mine was 50/50 chance of a rain), don't even try going there! I guess, I will be looking for other places to visit next time.

Photo of Cheryl W.

It took about an hour to drive into the park from the moment you pull in to the point of where you pay for tickets. The weather was nice like 80 degrees, which made most of the animals tired and hot, so it was disappointing. The lion and tiger exhibit is set up nicely so that it is possible to have a memorable experience, but sadly it wasn't the case for us. The reptile section looked like something you'd find at a pet store, I've actually seen better at a pet store. I think they could spend more money on the animals than the water park, which was still under construction, ( the lazy river and the larger water slides were not open or completed). The water park itself seemed over crowded and dirty. My daughter said she saw two dead frogs in the wave pool side. The most fun part of the park was the safari drive. The camels are the most interactive. They seem to follow the cars the most. Most of everything else stayed clear of the pavement. I still feel like they could give that part some love and care. We actually saw one of the attendants asleep in their look out post. Money-wise, it's reasonable. Spent less than $200 of the tickets and a decent lunch for a family of 4, ( 2 adults, 2 children). I feel like 3 stars is generous. I did see many families who looked like they were enjoying themselves, mostly with younger children 2 yrs to 8 yrs of age. My daughters are 14 yrs and 11 yrs and didn't enjoy themselves that much.

parc safari in canada

Let me start off by saying this spot is amazing!!! It's off the highway as you approach the USA Canadian boarder you just have to look for the signs lol. When you enter the park the staff is friendly and informative. Now this isn't your normal park where you walk around, this is a drive through park where you actually interact with the animals, as you drive along a long path several animals are just wandering around coming up to your vehicle so you can feed them!!! It was such an amazing experience and if I live closer I would definitely return!!! I won't give up the surprise and say which animals are their but it's amazing! Highly recommended!!!

I paid $1,600 to stay at a lodge at Parc Omega, where wolves come right up to your window

  • My friends and I paid $1,600 to stay at a wolf lodge at Parc Omega, a safari park in Quebec, Canada.
  • The lodges had panoramic floor-to-ceiling windows to watch wolves in their forest habitats.
  • We thought the experience was well worth the money, especially since we had access to the trails.

Insider Today

This year, more and more people are prioritizing spending money on trips instead of going out with friends — and, with that, visiting dream destinations and soaking in one-of-a-kind experiences are top of mind.

A few years ago, I saw a video of people on a vacation I knew would be worth adding to my own bucket list . This video showed people staying in a lodge at Parc Omega as beautiful Canadian gray wolves walked past floor-to-ceiling windows.

I knew my friends and I had to visit a wolf lodge for ourselves, and this past winter, we finally got to go. Here's what our $1,600 stay at Parc Omega was like.

I booked my trip to Parc Omega several months in advance.

parc safari in canada

Before I booked a lodge, I regularly checked the cabin availability on Parc Omega's reservation page. I didn't have any specific dates in mind, but knew I wanted a two-night stay during the winter months.

Finally, in May 2023, a two-night stay for February 2024 opened up. I eagerly booked a cabin with two of my friends.

The lodge was expensive, but I split the cost with my friends.

parc safari in canada

The total for a two-night stay with taxes and fees was $2,160 CAD, or about $1,600 USD, which I split with two friends.

When I booked, I noticed prices for the wolf cabins started at $570 CAD per night. The rates seemed to fluctuate depending on demand and season.

We could choose from a cabin, lodge, or chalet. Since we weren't sure if more friends would join us, we chose a lodge that could house up to six people.

My friends and I flew to Ottawa and drove to Parc Omega.

parc safari in canada

The drive from Ottawa to Montebello, Quebec, was about an hour long, but we arrived just in time for the 4 p.m. check-in. When we entered the park, we drove to the check-in cabin, which was located near the entrance.

A receptionist handed us maps of the lodges and the whole park, told us we'd be staying in the Artique Lodge, and gave us directions to our housing unit.

Our lodge was one of four houses located near a 13-member wolf pack's protected forest habitat.

parc safari in canada

Our lodge was located near a 13-member-wolf-pack habitat. At check-in, the staff explained we'd see different wolf behaviors dependent on the season.

For example, they said in the spring, parkgoers may see wolf pups emerging from the den with their mother.

There were a few safety precautions in place.

parc safari in canada

At check-in, a staff member gave us an emergency number and reminded us not to feed the wolves. A very tall fence also separated the wolf habitat from the lodge's yards and patios, so the animals couldn't get to the parkgoers.

We also couldn't open the windows overlooking the wolves' habitat.

We saw the wolves as soon as we walked through the lodge's doors.

parc safari in canada

We saw beautiful Canadian gray wolves standing at our floor-to-ceiling window when we entered the lodge .

We immediately sat on the floor, pressed our noses against the glass, and forgot about unpacking the car and putting groceries in the fridge.

I felt so lucky to see the wolves greeting us as new guests. Some of them even started howling, which gave all of us goosebumps.

We watched the wolves through the window for hours.

parc safari in canada

Eventually, my friends and I put a few blankets and pillows on the floor to get cozy as we watched the majestic animals .

The wolves howled well into the night, which felt magical during the snowfall.

The wolves were a highlight of the trip, but the Artique Lodge was really nice, too.

parc safari in canada

I thought the Artique Lodge was large enough to fit six people comfortably.

The kitchen had a fridge, stove, microwave, Nespresso machine, and plenty of cookware and utensils. There were two sofas and a coffee table in the living room, four beds around the lodge, and a bathroom on the ground floor.

We also enjoyed an outdoor fire pit with a cooking grate and a seating area.

We enjoyed breakfast alongside the wolves.

parc safari in canada

The next morning, we cooked breakfast and enjoyed our meals as the wolves fought over their own food in front of us.

I loved watching the wolves play with each other.

parc safari in canada

We continued to watch the wolves sleep, fight, howl, play, and roam around their habitat. I loved observing their behaviors, which I imagine are similar to wolves in the wild.

We also drove along Parc Omega's trail.

parc safari in canada

Parc Omega offers a large wildlife safari park with about 20 animal species, including moose, caribou, arctic foxes, and bison. As lodge guests, we had free access to the park.

People not staying at Parc Omega's accommodations can access the wildlife safari with a ticket, which costs about $44 CAD.

With the help of the park map we received at check-in, we drove along the 7 ½-mile marked path, which took about an hour and a half. It was an amazing, lively drive as the deer, moose, and caribou approached our car so we could feed them carrots.

Overall, staying at a lodge at Parc Omega was worth the money.

parc safari in canada

The wolf lodges at Parc Omega were a truly one-of-a-kind experience.

I loved how the lodge's panoramic floor-to-ceiling bay windows allowed us to be so close to the wolves. I felt like I was living in a fantasy novel.

Although it was an expensive trip for me, I thought the unique excursion was a great value, especially since we had access to the park trails. I'm ecstatic I crossed the wolf lodges off my bucket list.
