True Traveller Insurance Review: The Best Backpacker Insurance for UK and EU Residents

Travel insurance is essential for any trip abroad. Although it’s unlikely that anything will go wrong, it’s important to be covered as a serious accident or illness could end up costing you a fortune.

For eight years we used True Traveller insurance which is the best backpacker insurance we’ve found.

True Traveller insurance is only available for UK and EU residents, so if you’re from somewhere else we recommend SafetyWing instead—more details on that below.

Here’s our True Traveller insurance review and why we think it’s the best long term travel insurance for Brits.

True Traveller Covid-19 Coverage

Easy claims process, safetywing: the best alternative to true traveller for non-uk residents, get a true traveller insurance quote.

True Traveller  does provide medical, cancellation, and curtailment cover for COVID-19, but only if you have been vaccinated and are not travelling to a country that the FCDO advises against “all but essential travel on the current assessment of COVID-19 risks.”

To find out, go to the  FCDO Travel Advice  page and search for the country you plan to visit to see the latest restrictions. In late 2021, there are only seven countries on the list to avoid travelling to.

True Traveller was originally an adventure travel company—their policies are designed by travellers for travellers and it shows.

They offer a flexibility that other insurance companies don’t and show a real understanding of the needs of backpackers and long-term travellers. With True Traveller you can:

  • Buy travel insurance when you are already travelling – This is very rare as most insurance companies require you to be in your home country at the time of purchase. It’s ideal if you forget to buy insurance or your policy expires and you need to renew.
  • Travel with a one-way ticket – Unlike most insurance companies, True Traveller covers you if you don’t know when you’ll be returning home (as we never do) and don’t have a return ticket.
  • Get cover for a range of adventure activities – Whether you’ll be horse riding, scuba diving, snowboarding, trekking, volunteering, or working on a gap year, True Traveller covers you. You can choose which of their three activity packs is right for you—the Traveller Pack covers 91 activities and is included as standard.
  • Choose the cover you really need – This can dramatically reduce the cost of your policy (see below).

If you are heading off on a long trip, you can buy a backpacker insurance policy for up to 18 months (and extend it if needed).

Although True Traveller insurance is ideal for long-term travellers, it’s great for short trips too.

You can purchase cover for a single trip or potentially save money with an Annual Multi Trip policy which is valid for unlimited trips throughout the year, for up to 30 days (True Value or Traveller) or 70 days (Traveller Plus).

True Traveller insurance is the best value travel insurance we’ve found for UK and EU residents.

This is because they allow you to tailor the policy to suit you. You can choose the most basic medical insurance or add extras like baggage, electronics, cancellation, extreme adventure activities, and winter sports cover.

This keeps costs down as you only buy what you really need. 

Getting a True Traveller Quote

True Traveller offers three policies: True Value (the cheapest, for backpackers and travellers under 40), Traveller (their most popular policy), and Traveller Plus (with enhanced medical and cancellation cover).

They can not insure people who are over 65 years old.

It’s very easy to get a quote on the homepage of the True Traveller website . Below is the quote I got— £392 for a one year True Value worldwide policy (including the US) .

Getting a quote for True Traveller backpacker insurance

If you exclude the US and Canada, you will save a considerable amount—£63 on this quote. On trips over six months, you can spend 14 days in the US without paying extra. 

You can see the different levels of coverage above. Traveller and Traveller Plus offer higher levels of baggage and cancellation coverage and smaller excesses (the amount you pay of any claim).

We usually choose the basic True Value policy as our main concern is medical expenses and repatriation.

I recommend paying slightly more—about £52 a year on my quote—to reduce the excess to £0. Even if you only go to the doctor once, you’ll likely pay more than this so will save money. 

You can then choose to add an Activity Pack, but for us the Traveller Pack that is included is enough.

It covers activities that we sometimes do like horse riding, motorcycling (under 125cc), kayaking, cycling, white water rafting, sailing, surfing, and lots more.

You can also add winter sports cover.

For the True Value policy baggage isn’t automatically included but you can add it. We don’t bother as it only includes valuables up to £200 total (£100 per item) and our non-electronic items aren’t worth much.

You can also choose to add electronics separately, but the value limit of £450 per item (or £750 with Traveller Plus) is not enough for our laptops and camera.

Unfortunately, we haven’t found a good option for long-term worldwide electronics insurance, so our items are uninsured and we make sure we have enough savings to replace them.

If you decide to travel for longer, you can easily extend your True Traveller policy (before the expiry date) and get a 10% discount.

Even if you let your policy expire while abroad you can purchase a new one by ticking the “already travelling” box.

The real test of any insurance is how easy it is to make a claim. I have made a claim with True Traveller and was pleased to discover that the process was simple and quick.

To make a claim you have to download the claim form from their website and return it within 60 days of the incident. Make sure you keep any receipts and doctor or police reports.

I had to visit the doctor in Bali on two occasions about ongoing stomach problems and they did various tests to find out what was wrong and prescribed antibiotics.

The total cost wasn’t a huge amount over my £125 excess, but it was worth putting in a claim anyway. After this I learnt to pay a little extra to reduce the excess to zero.

The claims form was a little intimidating at first, but it was straightforward once I started and it didn’t take long to fill out.

As I was still travelling I was able to send the form by email along with scanned copies of the doctor’s report and receipt and my certificate of insurance. Scanning was easy with the Notes app on our iPhone or you could just take a photo.

Claims are supposed to take up to 10 working days, but two days later I received an email saying my claim had been processed and a day later the money was in my bank account.

I was impressed by how easy and quick making a claim was. I was also pleased that they hadn’t quibbled over the fact that the doctor had got my date of birth wrong on my report.

My claim was a small one, so much larger claims may be more difficult, but True Traveller has excellent reviews on Trust Pilot and I feel confident continuing to use them.

If you are not from the UK, the best alternative to True Traveller we have found is SafetyWing . It’s designed for nomads and is payable as a monthly subscription (cancellable anytime). They provide COVID-19 cover worldwide. 

The standard policy costs a flat rate of US $45 per 4 weeks which is automatically charged every 4 weeks until you cancel. This is for ages 18-39; other ages are available but will cost more. Travel to the US adds an extra $38 per 4 weeks.

I think True Traveller is good value for any length trip. You could always do a search on a travel insurance comparison site to see if you can find something cheaper (just make sure you compare the coverage). Have a great trip!

If you have made some research online to look for the best (or maybe the cheapest ;)) backpacker insurance for your next trip, I’m sure you read about WorldNomads or SafetyWing as they are the most widely recommended on travel blogs! But in our opinion, in most situation, these travel insurances do not offer the best value for money for backpackers or long term travellers.

If you are from the UK or Europe, one of the best travel / backpacker insurance out there is definitely TrueTraveller (if you’re not from UK / EU, check out Heymondo or ACS which offer coverages Worldwide). They offer a solid range of travel coverages that you can easily customize for your needs.

So in the following lines we will review the different travel insurance options they offer and give you our opinion on the guarantees / coverage limits they have.

Who are True Traveller insurance?

Truetraveller true value: the cheapest backpacker insurance on the market, truetraveller traveller: the backpacker insurance with the best value for your money, truetraveller traveller plus: the travel insurance with very high coverage limits, alternative to truetraveller insurance for non uk / eu residents.

The story of TrueTraveller is quite an interesting one as they were not a travel insurance company at the beginning (in 2010) but a travel company specialising in adventure holidays. Since they had specific travel insurance needs for their clients, they created their own custom insurance scheme covering “more adventurous” holidays.

But eventually, the demand for their travel insurance products started exceed the demand for holiday and since 2014 they only do travel insurances! That’s the reason why they claim on their website they are “a travel insurance designed by travellers” .

If you are wondering if they are a serious travel insurance company, their travel policy is backed by AXA Group which is one of the biggest insurance company in the world. So if anything happens during your trips, you can be sure you’re in good hands.

But now, let’s move on to the different travel coverages they offer and check which one would be the best for you. For backpackers and long-term travellers, TrueTraveller offer 3 different coverages:

  • The Traveller
  • Traveller Plus

Each one of these coverages can also be customized to your needs!

TrueTraveller coverage price in 2023

True Value is the cheapest backpacker travel insurance offered by True Traveller and was designed for backpackers under 40 . It offers a very good coverage for the most important points that every backpacker travel insurance should provide:

  • Medical expenses up to 10’000’000€ which is already really good compared to most of the other insurances.
  • Repatriation (100% of actual costs up to 10’000’000€)
  • Personal liability (1’000’000€ for bodily injury and 1’000’000€ as well for material damage)

One thing that is really cool with TrueTraveller is that the most important points are included in the base coverage but if you need some additional options, you can add them separately . True Traveller is the only insurance company offering such a level of flexibility to customize your coverage. This shows that they have a real understanding of the backpackers or long term travellers needs.

Here are the options they provide (most of these options are available for their 3 coverage levels with different expenses limits):

  • Activities : By default, you already have a lot of activities included (like scuba diving up to 18m, surfing, kite surfing…). But if you’re gonna do more “adventurous” activities, they have 3 other levels of coverages for activities going from water rafting, trekking at high altitude, rock climbing, via ferrata, parachuting, mountaineering… Just be aware that taking one of the option can increase the price substantially.
  • Winter sports : If you plan to some ski or snowboard on your trip, Truetraveller also have 2 options for that.
  • Baggage & Personal Effects : I personally think it’s great they don’t include baggage by default. You really need a travel insurance for the most important things that can put you in financial troubles (repatriation, medical expenses, personal liability)… Of course it’s annoying if your camera gets stolen but you can always buy a new one. So think twice before taking this option.
  • Valuable items : They also have an option for more expensive items like cameras, laptops, mobile phone… But my previous remark remains for this point.
  • Already Travelling : If you are already travelling, you can still subscribe to their coverage for a small additional fee.
  • Excess removal : You can pay a little extra to remove the Excess (or deductible) you have to pay by default for each claim.
  • … and a few other options

It’s definitely the most popular insurance coverage from True Traveller . First, it takes all the good things from the True Value coverage but with higher expenses limits for the important things:

  • Medical expenses up to 10’000’000€ which is more than enough in our opinion.
  • Personal liability (2’000’000€ for bodily injury and 2’000’000€ as well for material damage)

They also added some interesting options like the “Search & Rescue” which is in our opinion an important option if you plan to do some trekking for exemple.

But the most important, this coverage covers travellers up to 65 years old wich makes it in our opinion the best travel insurance for older backpackers and long term travellers (> 50 years old)

Nothing complicated here, they take everything from the Traveller coverage but with higher expenses limits:

  • Medical expenses up to 10’000’000€ which potentially covers you for anything that can happen.

Unless you think you really need higher medical expenses limits, we don’t think you need such a level of coverage.

If you are under 40, we honestly think that the True Value coverage is the best value backpacker insurance you can get for a long-term trip. Even if it their cheapest coverage, their expenses limits are already better than most of the other travel insurances on the market (you can compare for yourself here ). Starting at 29€/months, it’s really hard to beat!

If you would prefer to have higher expenses limits or you are older than 40, the Traveller coverage is the travel insurance you need. In our opinion, it’s not necessary to upgrade to the Traveler Plus coverage.

The title of this page says it all, Truetraveller is unfortunately available only for UK / EU residents. So if you’re not from one of these countries, you still have several options available.

Most of the travel blogs will recommend you to buy a WorldNomads (too expensive in our opinion) or a SafetyWing (really weak personal liability) coverage. But in our opinion, you can find better travel insurances than these ones.

One of the best value for money you can get worldwide is definitely ACS travel insurance . Their Globe Partner coverage is one of the cheapest on the market and offers a very decent coverage starting at 36€/months.

If you want higher medical expenses limit (ACS offers 300’000€ which is ok but not incredible), you can also check out Heymondo and it’s long stay coverage (-5%) which covers you up to 2’500’000€ for medical expenses and repatriation starting around 40€ per months. But the easiest way is still to compare these coverages using our interactive table below:

That’s it for our truetraveller insurance review. As you will have understand by now, we think truetraveller offers some of the best backpacker and long term travelers insurance on the market. If you live in the UK / EU, their True Value coverage offers really good value for your money. If we would go backpacking right now, it’s definitely the travel insurance we would chose (as of 2024).

Fantastic service

Easy, fast, happy

Based on good reviews from people who had True Traveller insurance in Canada, I decided to choose it for my WH visa in New Zealand. It’s been a little over a week since I had a work injury. It has only been a few days since I filled my claim for visit to the ER and prescription medicine, and it has already been settled. And I mean everything! Super quick communication, successful claim, money in the bank (foreign currency just to add). Done, easy.

Not like other insurance companies!

I took out a years long policy and unfortunately I encountered a new health problem whilst away, requiring different consultations, an MRI scan and surgical procedure. I had to phone the 24/7 helpline as some costs were due to be over £500 each. TT were able to confirm approval for these costs within the day, as I needed an answer quickly as things were moving fast. When I claimed the money back the funds were in my account quickly (1-7 days). The more evidence you can upload the quicker the reimbursement. I still have 6 months of my trip left but feel reassured knowing I have TT travel insurance covering me. They’re not like other insurance companies who have lots of loopholes to get out of paying and clunky online systems. I can’t remember everyone’s names but Dasa, Matej and Vera were all helpful, friendly and responded promptly. The only negative I experienced was a member of staff I spoke to on the 24/7 helpline. I spoke to 4 different people, of whom 3 were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately one woman had an annoyed tone and kept confusing me by saying conflicting things. When I tried to clarify what she was saying she became frustrated with me; exasperated sighing, laughing and saying “I don’t know what you want / I never said that”. I was a bit shocked at the end of the call as her demeanour was completely different to the rest of the TT team. I know everyone can have a bad day, so hopefully it was just that, but had she been the first person I’d spoken to I would have had a bad first impression of TT. But as I said I would definitely recommend TT for your travel insurance!

Had an accident abroad with a sea urchin which resulted in me needing surgery! Absolute experts

I needed a rather complicated insurance cover (well, extremely complicated to the broker I tried first). True Traveller are clearly experts in this field as I had everything I needed within minutes. Their chat facility is manned by someone who knows their products inside out, their email response time was super fast (they promise to get back to you with 24 hours, I had a reply in under 24 hours). I am now confident that I have exactly the right product. Review based on service as I hope I don’t need to test the claims service but I am sure it would be top notch. Highly recommended.

Very quick and simple!

Very quick and simple!! True Traveller are amazing!! I took a fall in KohTao and cut up my leg. The next morning I went to the clinic to get it checked out and there were signs of inflammation, so I had to pay approx £200 for antibiotics and a blood test. I launched my claim straight after and I had a response and the money back within 45 minutes! Unsure if this would be the case for larger claims but I am feeling very reassured I made the right choice going with True Traveller!!

Extremely efficient!

I had a quick medical expense and never thought it would be dealt with so quickly and efficiently. Most insurances I’ve been with will harass you with bureaucratic requests until you give up. True Traveller was way beyond any expectations.

My experience was extremely positive. It was the first time I had to file a complaint, and every step was quite straightforward. Very impressed with True Traveller

I had to claim for an Inguinal Hernia that developed during my travels. I filed a claim online through the True Traveller website attaching photos of any invoices from the hospital, Pharmacy, etc. True Traveller dealt with my claim very efficiently and very quickly. True traveller, top choice

Myself and my husband have used True Traveller as our insurer on several occasions now for various length of trips. It always is on top of our list when choosing the insurance before we head off. Yes, it may seem pricey at times, but it's totally worth it, plus when you break it down to daily cost it really is a great value ( our current one costing £2.05 per day) considering it covers a lot of sports and has great add ons, so you can adventure with calm mind knowing that should an unfortunate accident happen you are going to be in good hands. We usually travel several months up to a year at the time and have had our fair share of misfortunes encountered on our ways, from cancelled flights during covid and missed flights due to the weather to stolen luggage, including passports to fractured bone and I am so grateful to efficient assistance of true traveller staff that has sorted us out in compassionate and quick manner. I have no hesitation to recommend this company to any adventurer out there, looking to have a great insurance backing up their travels. P.s. Choosing the no excess is worth to add on.

Great service once documents uploaded

Bought a year long global travel policy with True Traveller. Thought the cost and coverage was good in comparison to competitors. Used the policy to reclaim the cost of an online GP consultation and subsequent visit to local emergency care while travelling. I made sure to collect receipts and doctors notes from both. Once I had made the claim with True Traveller online, it was processed and paid exceptionally quickly with no further questions. Great service. The process of making the claim online was quite difficult as the system refused to accept photos of the receipts uploaded from both an apple and android phone (even though they were in the acceptable formats listed e.g. JPEG). We tried converting to PDF but these were rejected due to size. Finally accepted compressed PDF files.

Hi Vicky Thanks for your review. Photos uploaded from smart phones are “HEIC” images, which we don’t accept. We do advise people just take photos of their documents with their phone instead as they are then uploaded immediately. Overall good , we had a slight issue when my wife was in hospital in Nepal . But eventually they sorted the problem out once we put the claim through. I think personally the underwriting company (AXA) could word there policy slightly better to help the customer in Nepal as that’s where the insurance was for are trip .

Medical Insurance

I claimed on medical insurance with True Traveller. On one hand, when I made my claim, their service was excellent. Prompt, helpful and reassuring. They repaid expenses I had paid within 1 working day. However, for bills which they arranged to pay directly with the healthcare provider, they have been extremely bad. 4/5 months later I am still chasing them for unpaid bills. I have spent hours emailing and calling them to make payments.

Hi This is quite an interesting review, and although for privacy reasons we can’t address this claim in its entirety, we can explain how things work. When you need to make a claim where you have had a medical claim which you paid for, or lost baggage, or had to cancel your trip, this comes to TT claims, and we deal with it. We don’t like our customers being out of pocket for long, so we always try to ensure claims are settled within 10 days. Ideally, quicker. For large medical claims in North America, these payments are made by our insurer, AXA. AXA are huge in North America, and run numerous Private Health Schemes, Employee Heath schemes, travel insurance schemes like ours, and pay millions of dollars every day to healthcare providers in North American from their vast offices in Chicago and Montreal. The problem in North America though, and this is specific to North America, is overcharging by medical facilities. There’s one price if you pay, and another price, usually double or more, if you pay through your insurance. Because of this, all bills over a set amount must go through “cost containment”, where the insurer attempts to reduce the overbilling, to keep premiums down. Generally, a 40 to 50% reduction is not unusual. In this case, as in all other similar ones, the hospital has a “Guarantee of Payment” and a contract with the insurer, but that doesn’t stop them threatening customers with all sorts of scenarios, none of which they can do as they need a Court order, which they cannot get. It would be great if hospitals just had one price, so then cost containment wouldn’t exist, but this only happens in the USA & Canada due to the way private medicine is monetized there. Everywhere else in the world accounts are settled much faster as overcharging insurers isn’t the norm. We should inform customers how this all works, and we will take steps to ensure this is done in the future. In this instance, the procedure was overcharged, and cost containment took place. Careful with true traveller travel insurance. Pps are experiencing huge issues getting their claims approved.

Here's an example:

" They do their best not to help you

I bought this insurance plan 2 times. First time I had no chance to use it as nothing happened to me, the second time is now that I’m here in Japan. I injured my foot and I couldn’t walk since the last three weeks. I went to the hospital as they suggest and I was told by the doctors to have x-rays and a bandage. I kept and sent all the receipts to them but they refused to reimburse my medical visit because they wanted a full medical report on paper from Japanese hospital. So I went back asking help to a friend as I can’t walk and asked and payed again for another visit and for the paper the asked. Now they wrote me that the medical report is not enough.

It's verified and true traveller has responded saying 'the service this customer received is not good enough and we absolutely recognise this and will address it.'

Actually, 'horrendous' is probably a more appropriate way to describe it (instead of 'not good enough').

Best travel insurance I ever had

Omg! Best insurance and insurance experience ever. TrueTraveller is really something. Unfortunately I got bitten by a cat in Thailand. I went to the local clinic, got my treatment, payed.. then I did the claim short after at the morning, included bills and medical report and at the same day at evening I had money on my bank account 🤯🤯🤯 Thank you! Could not reccomend you more. Hopefully I wont need the service of claims ever again 😅 but I will sure use True Traveler services everytime I will be traveling!!! ❤️❤️❤️

I went to Canada for 1 year through my IEC program. During my stay I had to urgently see a doctor at ER because of my health problem. I am so happy that I chose True Traveller insurance. Trustworthy, effective and fast

My daughter, on holiday in Bali during the Christmas holidays, felt ill and had to go to a medical centre. Not knowing if they would have admitted her and having no idea about the total cost of medical treatment, we preferred to open her claim by calling the telephone number, active 24/7. Fortunately, at the end of a day of treatment she was discharged. The evidentiary documentation was uploaded to the website and, after a few hours, I received the bank transfer with the reimbursement of the expenses incurred. A tip for travellers. The tourist telephone card purchased on site did not allow voice calls to be made and contained only data traffic. Since I was also abroad without the possibility of making voice calls, my daughter had to ask one of her friends in Australia to call for her. Make sure your SIM allows phone calls, because in critical moments it can become difficult to deal with simple situations.

Quick, no quibble response and repayment!

We found True Traveller to provide the best cover at the best price for our daughter's gap year. It then proved so quick and easy to claim for a 10-day piste closure in her ski resort, with full payment being made to us within a week of claiming! Amazingly reassuring service for young adults travelling to far flung corners of the globe alone, and for their anxious parents left back home! Can't recommend highly enough. Thank you!!

The fastest claim I have even been able…

The fastest claim I have even been able to make and receive funds for! I submitted the claim and the funds minus the excess was received within hours! This also included 1 further information request. I hope should I need to claim again this would also still be the case and if so I will use True Traveller and recommend them all the time!

Recommended! Professional, customer obsessed, fast in addressing needs

I travelled 3 months in South America with my girlfriend, and after some research we decided to go with a True Traveller insurance. So happy with the choice. Unfortunately we’ve had an instance of theft during the trip, and the team at True Traveler was professional and great in helping us both in the short term providing guidance on how to manage (eg police report) and in the medium term providing refunds for covered stolen items (thank you Zeus for managing the case). Website is very good and informative. Prices competitive. Customer attention and speed of response high. Highly recommended.

Fantastic service, very fast

Claiming directly was easy and seamless, A little frustrating dealing with AXA

Dealing with AXA for them to pay the hospital directly was difficult. They also included a local representative so too many people in the conversations. Slow correspondence and stressful when already in pain during stay. The part dealing with True Traveller direct claim for the part I paid myself and had to claim back was seamless and totally no stress. My only comment is when you try to fill out the claim form online, completing the dates is difficult but as soon as you make it a PDF it works perfectly so it would be good to tell me to do that as frustrating for a while

Why does an insurance company the size of AXA need to employ local companies to handle hospitalizations abroad? Well, it’s simply that although AXA are huge, they don’t have offices in every country, and in some jurisdictions, hospitals won’t accept the “Guarantee of Payment” insurers issue to authorise your medical treatment, unless it’s issued by a local company. So yes, due to bureaucracy, local agents have to be used. The True Traveller

Easy-to-follow claim process, amazing claims team

In the unfortunate event of an accident while traveling, True Traveller came in and help when I needed it the most - by claiming hospital bills in a foreign country. The claim process might seem a bit cumbersome but it's crucial to provide as much detail as possible. The claims team is made of real people who have empathy, listen and are very quick at what they do. I was assisted by Ana, Petra W, Katerina E, Eva B, and all of them were the kindest and the process was honestly super smooth. Don't hesitate to sign up for travel insurance with them.

Like most people

Like most people, over the years, I have had many different insurers, for many different reasons. I say, without doubt, that True Traveller is one of the best companies I have used. Courteous, reactive, efficient and professional spring to mind. I was taken into and treated in hospital. I filed my claim on Friday, I received an acknowledgement immediately. My claim was reviewed and settled within 72 hours. I could not ask for more. A 5* service.

Expensive and useless

We bought their cover which is considerably more expensive than normal insurers as we needed coverage for hiking at high altitudes. We thought it's worth it for the peace of mind and the serious insurance provider behind them (AXA). Would not use them ever again. We had two minor, straightforward medical situations and contacted them for advice on what to do. You get directed to an AXA call centre which has no information, then took 5-8 hours to come back with a response, which was equally useless. On both occasions the AXA team were unable to answer simple questions about medical provision options. The second time around they were particularly confrontational and patronising, which was infuriating when you're ill abroad and looking for information / assistance from your "trusted" insurer. Only silver lining is that we had no serious issues to need them for as I don't even want to think what we would have done then. Try someone else, I wouldn't use them ever again.

Hi there This review relates to a medical condition, and due to privacy laws, we cannot comment on this case at all. However, we would like to explain how claims work. There are two types of medical claim. The first is for minor issues, like an ear infection or gastroenteritis as an example (and which are very common!), which will cost a few hundred pounds to sort out, and large claims which will cost more than £500; injuries requiring hospitalisation, rescue, or a medical repatriation back home. We give details on our policy documents of the claims procedure, on our website (www.truetraveller.com/claims21) and we specifically email customers once they’ve left informing them how to claim. On our website we state: “If you have suffered a minor injury or have suddenly become ill just go to a local pharmacy and ask them for help. However, if you feel it’s so urgent you need to see a Doctor or go to a Clinic, just go. You do not need to get permission from us, so just go to the nearest medical facility. You can ask your hotel for this information, ask other travellers, or of course, you can just "Google" it. Although normally we don’t cover pharmacy costs, you can claim for your Doctors/Clinic fees and costs for any drugs you are prescribed. If the treatment comes to £500/€600 or less, just pay and retain all the receipts.” You then just send in receipts to us, and we refund those costs very quickly as you will see from other reviews. AXA Assistance operate our 24/7 Emergency Medical Assistance Service, and have offices in numerous countries, and have arranged countless rescues, complex repatriations, and paid for many ambulances and hospitals. They’re the largest travel assistance service in the world. What they don’t know though, is the location of every pharmacy in the world, nor know every local Doctor or clinic in the world, so that’s why we, and every other travel insurer, tells customers to sort out minor claims themselves. It’s faster, simpler and more efficient. As you would imagine, all assistance cases are essentially triaged, so urgent cases are dealt by senior staff immediately, and non-urgent cases are dealt with in order. The True Traveller

Not good experience with their axa patner

Everything was great until I had to call their axa partner when I got sick and had to do some urgent tests. The first person I talked to told me somebody will call me back within an hour... 5 hours later no news... I called back and turned out she had not even opened a claim and nobody was going to return my call. The second one was rude with me.. as an example when I asked how long it would take to get the tests appointmemt, she said it was up to me answering her questions correctly! Hopefully it gets better from here but their axa partner so far has been terrible.

Hi Unfortunately, due to Data Protection issues, we cannot reply in an open forum to this review as you’d expect, but we have been in touch with our customer directly. We can however see that this assistance case is being handled, and relevant appointments are being made, but being a weekend and in a remote area, these won’t be confirmed until later today. It is entirely normal for assistance operators to ask questions to confirm cover. All calls to AXA Assistance are monitored and recorded, and we have asked AXA to find the original call and to establish why it wasn’t set up correctly in their systems. The True Traveller

Dental treatment

I needed emergency dental treatment as I had toothache. I’m on a working holiday in Canada so dental is expensive I went yesterday payed for it my self and within 12 hours of submitting my claim form I have had the claim settled and will be reimbursed for my treatment. Best insurance travel company I’ve been with! Love the fact you can get insurance once you’re already abroad and lots of flexibility with it (great for me as I can be forgetful) but I made a medical claim during my last trip. It was super straight forward to do and was processed in 24 hours! Easy and generous claims experience

I sadly broke my ankle while hiking in Argentina. True Traveller weren't always quick to respond via email, and getting through by phone while abroad can be difficult. However, after a week of stress trying to book flights home True Traveller out of their good will covered all of my expenses pertaining to my injury (accommodation, last-minute flight home etc.) with the claims procedure quick and easy.

We got there in the end

We took out an expensive travel insurance policy to cover a season skiing, including off piste. Our trip was curtailed because my father was hospitalised and subsequently died. The only claim we made was for the cost of our seasonal ski passes and nothing else. True Traveller refused our claim on the grounds it constituted 'loss of enjoyment'. Considering the circumstances, this seemed very callous. We were at a loss how something as fundamental as a ski pass was not covered by a policy taken out for skiing. I am very upset now to be accused of sharp practice by the insurance company. It was only after True Traveller refused our claim that we approached the ski area to ask whether, as a gesture of goodwill, they could refund our ski pass. They had no obligation to do so, and went away to think about it. They came back several days later to offer a credit for next year, which we probably can't use, but we really appreciated the gesture and their kindness and compassion. In the meantime, True Traveller had a change of heart and offered to pay our claim. Although not specifically listed under curtailment, they said that sometimes the spirit of the policy should be taken into consideration. In the background, they went away to try and recoup some of their expenses from the ski area and were told that we had been given a voucher. Then they implied fraudulent behaviour on our part! When you've spent your life being scrupulously honest, it is so hurtful and insulting and I hope they amend their response to our review. Although the claim process has been disappointing and very upsetting we are pleased with the outcome. They honoured the claim and later communications have restored some confidence in the company.

Hi The claim was initially declined as we don't cover ski passes on curtailment claims. However the complaint was reviewed by a director who overruled the claims team and instructed them to pay the claim as the original decision wasn't made in the "spirit" of the policy. True Traveller

Fast and friendly response

I got ill unexpectedly and had to seek medical advice during my trip. I made a claim on the following day of my doctor’s visit. Only five hours later I received a message informing me my claim has been accepted. The message also read it would take between 3 and 5 business day for the money to appear on my bank account, but I received them already the next day. Extremely happy with the speed and quality of the service!

Fast & secure for ski trips

My girlfriend had a ski accident and sprained her knee during our ski trip near Briancon, France. We filed a claim to reimburse the hospital consultancy & her treatment. Dental emergency claim

I had a dental emergency whilst on holiday in Spain. A wisdom tooth started causing me pain and I had to have it removed. When I got back home I filled out the claims form and added all of the supporting documentation and emailed it off. I received a confirmation of receipt immediately and a day or two later my claim had been processed. It was a fast and straightforward process. I'm very happy with true traveller insurance. They provide excellent service at an affordable price. Knowing how efficient they are, since it's the first time I've had to make a claim, gives me even greater piece of mind for my next trip. I will continue to use true traveller for future trips.

Definitely recommend, worth it, no fuss

Communication with True Traveler is great, they have a 24 hr number to call and they were helpful. I wanted them to help me find a doctor in the USA but it took a couple of days of back and forth with emails, so in the end I just went ahead and booked it myself, seemed easier. I then sent an email with the invoice and the documents they requested, and got my refund for medical costs within a couple of days. Super easy and no problems! Great service and I'm very happy with it. Every time I've called they've been really helpful and it does feel like you're talking to someone who understands you, rather than someone reading a script.

Highly recommended for Backpackers

I bought a backpackers policy and made a few claims, had a very good experience. Coverage was very clearly described, making it easy to cover the sports and countries I needed. When it came to a claim, I could do everything without a laptop, got paid quickly and it went straight into my account. Claims team communicated clearly and quickly. I had a medical incident in the USA, and I tried to get in touch with them - you're directed to do this if your costs are likely to exceed £500 - and couldn't speak to somebody quickly, so had to proceed without their input. Fortunately they covered my costs in full, minus excess, so they still did very well. I travelled for 15 months using their cover, they deserve five stars and I'd recommend them highly.

From Travellers to Travellers

I have been using True Traveller for several years. Fortunately, I have never had an accident and therefore there was no need to submit a claim for compensation. However, I recently contracted a serious eye inyoufection during my stay in Canada, which took me from one eye clinic to another and eventually I ended up in the emergency room of a hospital. As soon as I contacted True Traveller, everything went smoothly. After submitting all the required documents, my claim was processed and the company paid all the expenses I had claimed. Communication with the team (in my case, Dasa) was clear and quick as they always responded promptly. Thank you!

Small claims paid quickly and efficiently

Having had travel insurance for years and never claimed, I was apprehensive when having to claim twice (delayed baggage and a small medical claim) on a policy taken out with True Traveller. To my surprise, it was very easy and could all be done by email. The claim handler (Patrik) was very quick at responding and letting me know if anything was missing. The claims were both paid and the money was in my account super fast. They were only small claims, so it would be interesting to see how they are with larger claims, but my experience so far has been very good.

I read the all the excellent reviews before buying a policy. I unfortunately had my phone pick-pocketed(stolen) on the Metro in Santiago Chile. After which I reported it to the local police and obtained proof. I received the money for the claim, 36 hours after I submitted it. Wow!!! Excellent service - they deserve all their praise

I found my claim very easy and straightforward to submit, I received an email almost instantly to let me know it had been received. I submitted my claim on Wednesday and I received an email to let me know I had been successful and the money was in my bank account one day later! Amazing customer service.

I bitterly regret having booked this…

I bitterly regret having booked this service! We had to return earlier for a health emergency in the family, and we had to buy new plane tickets, our return tickets not being cancellable, and exchangeable at very very high costs. Today, True Traveler (although they told me by phone that it wouldn't be a problem) only reimburses me for the difference between my new tickets and my old ones (which isn't huge), and removes another €300 in administrative fees from my reimbursement. Results, they only reimburse us 300€ out of the 1300€ they were supposed to reimburse. IN SHORT, I am extremely disappointed with their service, don't book it, their prices are advantageous but in case of trouble (which is supposed to be their job), they are useless, they are bad advice, and they will do everything to reimburse you as little as possible.

Hi I regret due to Data Protection Regulations we cannot go into specifics about any claim. However, what we can say is that we do not charge any administration fees ever, whether on policy amendments or claim processing. On purchasing a policy, you will see there are different levels of Excess applicable (sometimes called a deductible). This is very common with all insurances, and on our budget True Value policy, the excess for European customers €150. You can, on any of our policies, pay a little extra to have that Excess waived, so in the event of a claim, no excess is applied. The True Traveller

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

I took out a family insurance policy…

I took out a family insurance policy when I was travelling around the world in the hope we would never need to use. Unfortunately when we were away someone on a moped tried to my crossover bag dragging me to the ground causing me to break my collar bone. My husband immediately contacted True Traveller from the hospital to explain the situation and to find out the best course of action. I chose to fly back to the UK to receive surgery 2 days later. True Traveller were not like other insurance companies, they treated me like a human being and were genuinely concerned about my injuries. After sending off my receipts and hospital letters I was regularly updated on the process of my claim, which was settled several days later. Hi Angela You were caught up in the Air Traffic Control disruption which happened on 28 August and your flights with EasyJet were cancelled after you experienced a long delay. You called in to our sales team on 31 August, and at that stage we believed you were on a package holiday with EasyJet and advised you that you should go back to them to get your money back, but you could still claim for delay with us. You emailed back on 11 September and explained you didn’t have a package holiday, but you had booked your tour separately from your flights. This did complicate things. Your sales consultant liaised with our claims team so you could claim for Missed Departure, as your flight was going to be delayed for 24 hours, which meant you could claim for the tour in total. It’s not totally in line with the policy wording but is in the spirit of the policy wording. You then sent in your claim form on the 13th, and after a quick follow up for more paperwork, Patrik from our claims team settled your claim in full two days later. Great for minor issues, terrible if AXA gets involved

Your experience with True Traveller will depend on the type of situation you encounter. For most of our trip, true traveller was extremely quick to respond and reimbursed the tiny claims very quickly. It helps that medical care in Asia is very inexpensive. The problem came when we finished our trip in the US. My son split his lip open and required stitches in the US. Due to the large amount, we had the option of having the insurance pay the bills directly. We obtained the extra detailed documentation needed and true traveller informed us that due to the cost higher than their threshold (of course, it's the US), this would need to be managed by their isurer AXA. AXA eventually (after follow-up messages) confirmed that everything was in order/approved and that the process of paying the medical bill took a long time. I understand the process in the US is likely more complicated than other countries, but it has now been 3 months, I am receiving repeated calls from the hospital asking for payment, reminder bills from the hospital saying now the bills will go to collection which means my credit will be negatively affected. This is unacceptable. They have also completely stopped responding to my last emails asking for a status update! So in short, if you are sure to only have minor non-US issues to settle, true traveller is great. If you think you might have a larger accident or are going to the US, be warned. AXA will need to get involved and they are not reliable. To be continued if they resolve this issue....

Hi As this refers to a medical case, we can’t comment in an open forum, but we can explain how payments work in the USA to hospitals. Essentially, hospitals are part of massive business organisations, and bill insurance companies all the time. AXA, our insurer, has many schemes operating in the USA, and pay medical organizations millions of dollars every week. All bills must be checked and double checked, as hospitals in North America overcharge. If all bills were accepted on face value, the price you pay for insurance will go up significantly. If you go to a hospital for a procedure in California for example, if you say you’re paying direct you get one price, but the price if paid by insurance companies is at least double. However, what AXA does, is that they formally inform hospitals that they are taking on the billing, and request that the hospital does not carry on chasing up customers directly. But most of the time, hospitals just ignore this, and put bills out to third party debt collectors who threaten all sorts of consequences if you don’t pay directly, like affecting your credit rating, for example. They can’t do this without a Court Order, which they know they can’t get. The normal fee collected by these debt collectors is 40% of the bill, and they just carry on trying to get you to pay even when the bill has been paid! In other parts of the world, Europe, Africa, Asia and the Pacific, overcharging doesn’t happen so the bills can be paid very quickly. So, we’re really sorry, we just can’t avoid reviews like this, and neither can any travel insurer. But for claims which come into TT, yes, we process these in a few days. True Traveller

Everest Base Camp Trek

Whilst trekking to Everest base camp in Nepal, I was quite sick with suspected HAPE at about 5000m. I contacted the insurance company & they were brilliant. I made sure I complied with the Ts & Cs (this is obviously very important) They organised the helicopter to get me off the mountain, the ambulance met us at the helipad, the hospital & all staff were amazing. I was thoroughly & comprehensively taken care of. I also submitted an additional claim for oxygen I had to pay for whilst on the mountain, that claim was settled (less the policy excess) & paid in to my bank account within 48 hours. Absolutely fantastic service & amazing insurance company. Very efficient & very professional. Definitely recommend this company for trekking at high altitude. Please note, it is vital to familiarise yourself with the insurance policy & be sure to comply with all Ts & Cs at all times.

Fast and friendly response

I had a dental emergency whilst on holiday in Spain. A wisdom tooth started causing me pain and I had to have it removed. When I got back home I filled out the claims form and added all of the supporting documentation and emailed it off. I received a confirmation of receipt immediately and a day or two later my claim had been processed. It was a fast and straightforward process. I'm very happy with true traveller insurance. They provide excellent service at an affordable price. Knowing how efficient they are, since it's the first time I've had to make a claim, gives me even greater piece of mind for my next trip. I will continue to use true traveller for future trips.

Definitely recommend, worth it, no fuss

Communication with True Traveler is great, they have a 24 hr number to call and they were helpful. I wanted them to help me find a doctor in the USA but it took a couple of days of back and forth with emails, so in the end I just went ahead and booked it myself, seemed easier. I then sent an email with the invoice and the documents they requested, and got my refund for medical costs within a couple of days. Super easy and no problems! Great service and I'm very happy with it. Every time I've called they've been really helpful and it does feel like you're talking to someone who understands you, rather than someone reading a script.

Highly recommended for Backpackers

I bought a backpackers policy and made a few claims, had a very good experience. Coverage was very clearly described, making it easy to cover the sports and countries I needed. When it came to a claim, I could do everything without a laptop, got paid quickly and it went straight into my account. Claims team communicated clearly and quickly. I had a medical incident in the USA, and I tried to get in touch with them - you're directed to do this if your costs are likely to exceed £500 - and couldn't speak to somebody quickly, so had to proceed without their input. Fortunately they covered my costs in full, minus excess, so they still did very well. I travelled for 15 months using their cover, they deserve five stars and I'd recommend them highly.

From Travellers to Travellers

I have been using True Traveller for several years. Fortunately, I have never had an accident and therefore there was no need to submit a claim for compensation. However, I recently contracted a serious eye inyoufection during my stay in Canada, which took me from one eye clinic to another and eventually I ended up in the emergency room of a hospital. Small claims paid quickly and efficiently

Having had travel insurance for years and never claimed, I was apprehensive when having to claim twice (delayed baggage and a small medical claim) on a policy taken out with True Traveller. To my surprise, it was very easy and could all be done by email. The claim handler (Patrik) was very quick at responding and letting me know if anything was missing. The claims were both paid and the money was in my account super fast. They were only small claims, so it would be interesting to see how they are with larger claims, but my experience so far has been very good.

I read the all the excellent reviews before buying a policy. I unfortunately had my phone pick-pocketed(stolen) on the Metro in Santiago Chile. I found my claim very easy and straightforward to submit, I received an email almost instantly to let me know it had been received. I bitterly regret having booked this…

I bitterly regret having booked this service! We had to return earlier for a health emergency in the family, and we had to buy new plane tickets, our return tickets not being cancellable, and exchangeable at very very high costs. Today, True Traveler (although they told me by phone that it wouldn't be a problem) only reimburses me for the difference between my new tickets and my old ones (which isn't huge), and removes another €300 in administrative fees from my reimbursement. Results, they only reimburse us 300€ out of the 1300€ they were supposed to reimburse. IN SHORT, I am extremely disappointed with their service, don't book it, their prices are advantageous but in case of trouble (which is supposed to be their job), they are useless, they are bad advice, and they will do everything to reimburse you as little as possible.

Hi I regret due to Data Protection Regulations we cannot go into specifics about any claim. However, what we can say is that we do not charge any administration fees ever, whether on policy amendments or claim processing. On purchasing a policy, you will see there are different levels of Excess applicable (sometimes called a deductible). This is very common with all insurances, and on our budget True Value policy, the excess for European customers €150. You can, on any of our policies, pay a little extra to have that Excess waived, so in the event of a claim, no excess is applied. The True Traveller

Fantastic service

I made a claim for medical expenses following a snowboarding accident. I was expecting it to take some time to settle but I put my claim in on the Monday evening and the money was in my bank account by the following afternoon. Perfect service - I cannot fault them. Easy, fast, happy

Based on good reviews from people who had True Traveller insurance in Canada, I decided to choose it for my WH visa in New Zealand. It’s been a little over a week since I had a work injury. It has only been a few days since I filled my claim for visit to the ER and prescription medicine, and it has already been settled. And I mean everything! Super quick communication, successful claim, money in the bank (foreign currency just to add). Done, easy.

Not like other insurance companies!

I took out a years long policy and unfortunately I encountered a new health problem whilst away, requiring different consultations, an MRI scan and surgical procedure. I had to phone the 24/7 helpline as some costs were due to be over £500 each. TT were able to confirm approval for these costs within the day, as I needed an answer quickly as things were moving fast. When I claimed the money back the funds were in my account quickly (1-7 days). The more evidence you can upload the quicker the reimbursement. I still have 6 months of my trip left but feel reassured knowing I have TT travel insurance covering me. They’re not like other insurance companies who have lots of loopholes to get out of paying and clunky online systems. I can’t remember everyone’s names but Dasa, Matej and Vera were all helpful, friendly and responded promptly. The only negative I experienced was a member of staff I spoke to on the 24/7 helpline. I spoke to 4 different people, of whom 3 were friendly and helpful. Unfortunately one woman had an annoyed tone and kept confusing me by saying conflicting things. When I tried to clarify what she was saying she became frustrated with me; exasperated sighing, laughing and saying “I don’t know what you want / I never said that”. I was a bit shocked at the end of the call as her demeanour was completely different to the rest of the TT team. I know everyone can have a bad day, so hopefully it was just that, but had she been the first person I’d spoken to I would have had a bad first impression of TT. But as I said I would definitely recommend TT for your travel insurance!

Perfect service!

Had an accident abroad with a sea urchin which resulted in me needing surgery! Made the claim thinking it would take months of back and forth but they were amazing and accepted my claim in a few days. I’m really pleasantly suprised and could not fault them. Claim due to a medical issue.

I had to claim due to a medical issue that developed prior my trip commenced. True Traveller guided me and helped me with the compiling of documents and medical certification. Whilst being demanding they were also professional, fair and understanding. Upon submitting all documents I was refunded without delay.

Absolute experts

I needed a rather complicated insurance cover (well, extremely complicated to the broker I tried first). True Traveller are clearly experts in this field as I had everything I needed within minutes. Their chat facility is manned by someone who knows their products inside out, their email response time was super fast (they promise to get back to you with 24 hours, I had a reply in under 24 hours). I am now confident that I have exactly the right product. Review based on service as I hope I don’t need to test the claims service but I am sure it would be top notch. Highly recommended.

Very quick and simple!

Very quick and simple!! True Traveller are amazing!! I took a fall in KohTao and cut up my leg. The next morning I went to the clinic to get it checked out and there were signs of inflammation, so I had to pay approx £200 for antibiotics and a blood test. I launched my claim straight after and I had a response and the money back within 45 minutes! Unsure if this would be the case for larger claims but I am feeling very reassured I made the right choice going with True Traveller!!

Extremely efficient!

I had a quick medical expense and never thought it would be dealt with so quickly and efficiently. Most insurances I’ve been with will harass you with bureaucratic requests until you give up. Dasa, the person who was put in touch with me about my expense, was also extremely efficient. Everything was sorted and reimbursed within 24h.

True Traveller was way beyond any expectations.

My experience was extremely positive. It was the first time I had to file a complaint, and every step was quite straightforward. From the first day, I called customer support, I felt reassured and guided at every turn. Additionally, I would like to highlight the efficiency of the email customer service, which was fabulous and could support and guide me throughout, resolving everything in just 2-3 days. Very impressed with True Traveller

I had to claim for an Inguinal Hernia that developed during my travels. I filed a claim online through the True Traveller website attaching photos of any invoices from the hospital, Pharmacy, etc. True Traveller dealt with my claim very efficiently and very quickly. They reimbursed the fees I had incurred directly to my bank account. Very impressive claims handling from True Traveller. I would highly recommend them if you require travel insurance.

True traveller, top choice

Myself and my husband have used True Traveller as our insurer on several occasions now for various length of trips. It always is on top of our list when choosing the insurance before we head off. Yes, it may seem pricey at times, but it's totally worth it, plus when you break it down to daily cost it really is a great value ( our current one costing £2.05 per day) considering it covers a lot of sports and has great add ons, so you can adventure with calm mind knowing that should an unfortunate accident happen you are going to be in good hands. We usually travel several months up to a year at the time and have had our fair share of misfortunes encountered on our ways, from cancelled flights during covid and missed flights due to the weather to stolen luggage, including passports to fractured bone and I am so grateful to efficient assistance of true traveller staff that has sorted us out in compassionate and quick manner. I have no hesitation to recommend this company to any adventurer out there, looking to have a great insurance backing up their travels. P.s. Choosing the no excess is worth to add on.

Great service once documents uploaded

Bought a year long global travel policy with True Traveller. Thought the cost and coverage was good in comparison to competitors. Used the policy to reclaim the cost of an online GP consultation and subsequent visit to local emergency care while travelling. I made sure to collect receipts and doctors notes from both. Once I had made the claim with True Traveller online, it was processed and paid exceptionally quickly with no further questions. Great service. The process of making the claim online was quite difficult as the system refused to accept photos of the receipts uploaded from both an apple and android phone (even though they were in the acceptable formats listed e.g. JPEG). We tried converting to PDF but these were rejected due to size. Finally accepted compressed PDF files.

Hi Vicky Thanks for your review. Photos uploaded from smart phones are “HEIC” images, which we don’t accept. We do advise people just take photos of their documents with their phone instead as they are then uploaded immediately. We will re-enforce the message on our claims page for people to simply take photos if they’re using their smart phone when submitting their claim. The True Traveller

Overall good

Overall good , we had a slight issue when my wife was in hospital in Nepal . But eventually they sorted the problem out once we put the claim through. I think personally the underwriting company (AXA) could word there policy slightly better to help the customer in Nepal as that’s where the insurance was for are trip .

Medical Insurance

I claimed on medical insurance with True Traveller. On one hand, when I made my claim, their service was excellent. Prompt, helpful and reassuring. They repaid expenses I had paid within 1 working day. However, for bills which they arranged to pay directly with the healthcare provider, they have been extremely bad. 4/5 months later I am still chasing them for unpaid bills. I have spent hours emailing and calling them to make payments.

Hi This is quite an interesting review, and although for privacy reasons we can’t address this claim in its entirety, we can explain how things work. When you need to make a claim where you have had a medical claim which you paid for, or lost baggage, or had to cancel your trip, this comes to TT claims, and we deal with it. We don’t like our customers being out of pocket for long, so we always try to ensure claims are settled within 10 days. Ideally, quicker. For large medical claims in North America, these payments are made by our insurer, AXA. AXA are huge in North America, and run numerous Private Health Schemes, Employee Heath schemes, travel insurance schemes like ours, and pay millions of dollars every day to healthcare providers in North American from their vast offices in Chicago and Montreal. The problem in North America though, and this is specific to North America, is overcharging by medical facilities. There’s one price if you pay, and another price, usually double or more, if you pay through your insurance. Because of this, all bills over a set amount must go through “cost containment”, where the insurer attempts to reduce the overbilling, to keep premiums down. Generally, a 40 to 50% reduction is not unusual. In this case, as in all other similar ones, the hospital has a “Guarantee of Payment” and a contract with the insurer, but that doesn’t stop them threatening customers with all sorts of scenarios, none of which they can do as they need a Court order, which they cannot get. It would be great if hospitals just had one price, so then cost containment wouldn’t exist, but this only happens in the USA & Canada due to the way private medicine is monetized there. Everywhere else in the world accounts are settled much faster as overcharging insurers isn’t the norm. We should inform customers how this all works, and we will take steps to ensure this is done in the future. In this instance, the procedure was overcharged, and cost containment took place.
