Luxury Travel to Western Australia

Travel+Leisure World's Best Awards 2023 logo in white

Western Australia is vast – it covers a third of the entire country – yet its population is disproportionately small. Unsurprising for a state of this size, the landscape is incredibly diverse – Western Australia has everything from vibrant cities and quaint vineyards to epic coastline and vast, open plains.

Sitting next to Australia’s Top End is the Kimberley region, an epic wilderness often described as Australia’s last frontier. Deep gorges cut through the landscape, waterfalls cascade from towering cliffs and freshwater swimming holes provide welcomes relief from the heat of the outback. Exploring an area this beautiful comes with its obvious rewards, but visitors to Kimberley can also marvel at incredible Aboriginal rock art from one of the world’s oldest surviving cultures.

In the east of Kimberley are the Bungle Bungles, equally bizarre in name and nature. These red and black striped domes in Purnululu National Park are one of the world’s most fascinating geological landmarks and the best way to appreciate them is to explore the many chasms and gorges that cut through these beguiling bumps.

With over 12,000km of coastline, Western Australia is not short on beautiful beaches. Follow the coast from Broome in the north all the way down the west of Australia and you’ll not suffer for lack of scenic spots to simply sit and marvel at mother nature. Those visiting this part of the world should make time to explore the pristine underwater world of Ningaloo Reef, the world’s largest fringing reef. The waters here are home to whale sharks, turtles, reef sharks and rays, and the snorkelling here is some of the best in the world.

And of course, we cannot forget the state capital Perth . Enjoy everything this vibrant city has to offer, then head south and enjoy the beautiful beaches and fine wines that Margaret River have to offer.

Domestic border restrictions have ended for nearly all States, meaning you:

  • don’t need to apply for a border pass
  • won’t need a Covid test
  • won’t need to quarantine

However, some States and service operators do require proof of vaccination. So all that is required to travel for most Discover Australia packages is to be fully vaccinated. Even WA has now opened up! It is expected that any remaining temporary restrictions will end or ease over coming weeks – since all governments have detailed strategies to live with Covid and to enable their tourism industry to flourish again. See current travel requirements here .

Many travel insurance providers are now offering good cover for Covid, including:

  • Travel disruptions and additional expenses due to Covid
  • Positive Covid test before travel
  • Positive Covid test during travel (including need to change travel arrangements / isolation)
  • Cancellation Cover
  • Medical expenses cover

Insurance cover can be very inexpensive, like only $150 for three weeks in Europe # . We strongly recommend taking out travel insurance with Covid cover. Following are some insurance companies: Medibank | TID | AHM | NIB Book now to secure the best deal and biggest savings. Use part of your Early Bird savings to pay for your travel insurance!

Being located on the stunning banks of the Swan River, and as capital of gorgeous Western Australia, a day trip to Perth is definitely something that should be on the top of your Australian to do list. It’s the world’s most isolated city, but don’t start thinking that means there’s not much going on in this lively town. Taking a day or more to tour this place will show that not only is it one of the friendliest places you’ll visit in Australia, but it’s also got some of the most incredible sites and activities.

It’s the world’s most isolated city, but don’t start thinking that means there’s not much going on in this lively town. Taking a day or more to tour this place will show that not only is it one of the friendliest places you’ll visit in Australia, but it’s also got some of the most incredible sites and activities. There’s the lush inner city Kings Park, the Swan Bell Tower, Fremantle’s bustling coffee and bar life, ‘The Cott’ or Cottesloe Beach (an incredible stretch of pristine, white sandy beach) plus a ton of other things to see.

If you’re after a day trip just outside Perth, you’ve also got a few different options. Just 3 hours south you’ve got the world class wineries of the Margaret River region. Then north there’s Nambung National Park, where you’ll find some of Australia’s most unique natural wonders, the Pinnacles; a unique expanse of mystical limestone pillars rising from the desert sand. Head east and you’ll find Wave Rock in Hyden, an incredible granite formation frozen in time and an epic National Geographic Magazine feature in 1967.

The tour was excellent. Good direction at the departure site, great rhythms to the days of hitting all the significant tourist stops there and back, super lodging—AND best of all Lee, the driver/tour-leader. He is a star—affable/friendly, informative/knowledgable, hard-at-work in the background so all goes smoothly: ten out of five. I would definitely take another Pinnacle Tour.

Their coaches were always on time and the drivers and guides excellent throughout. Special mention to Paul and Le who were a great team on a couple of our tours. Overall the trip was well organized. What people love about western australia tours.

It's an adventure, not a holiday Mar 2024 • Solo I wanted to see some of the west coast of Australia, which isn't as easy as the East Coast, especially if you don't have your own form of transport. This trip was perfect for that! There were about 22 of us in total, all varying ages, and some solo or with a friend or two, aswell as a wide range of nationalities. We were able to see some beautiful places, helping us to appreciate the natural world. We saw wild kangaroos, wild dolphins, turtles, and more if you chose to do an excursion. Everything was well organised, and it helps that the job to ensure it was organised was our leader, Geoff. He was able to ensure the smooth running of the tour, while we focussed on the experiences. Geoff told us about some of his favourite spots, enlightened us with his own stories and experiences, and took us to places we wouldn't have known about otherwise. Breakfasts, lunches, and dinners are included. This is mainly cereals or toast for breakfast, wraps for lunch, and a mixture of meals in the evenings. Everyone gets stuck in to set up, prepare, cook, and clean up afterwards. As Australia is a big country, there were long bus journeys, unfortunately, I feel the bus could have been more updated. It was tight between the seats, and I am only 5 foot 2. The only place for our legs was straight down, there was no room to put them underneath the seat in front of us, to stretch them out a little, as the seats have low backs. We also had a day bag with us on the bus, and this had to go by our feet as there was no where else to put it, such as over head compartments, or under the seats due to how little space there was. I felt bad for those who were taller. Our large bags were in a trailer attached to the bus, which I thought was a good idea. There were also no curtains or blinds on the windows. I was sat on the left side of the bus, and it got very hot due to the sun being that side. I put my hat and sunglasses on due to how bright it was, though I was then not able to feel the aircon as it was right above my head and if I had my hat on, I couldn't feel the air, so became quite hot. Due to being on the road for long periods of time, I feel these issues on the bus need to be looked at a bit more. We stopped for plenty of toilet/snack breaks at road houses/supermarkets. The accommodation was good for me, I chose the shared hostel accommodation. We didn't spend much time in the rooms. I was first concerned we may be sharing rooms with others outside of the tour although that was not the case. We shared with those on the tour, and the dorms were mixed. I think those with private rooms had a few reservations. It would have been nice to have been able to spend time at some of the places where we had our accommodation such as when we visited Monkey Mia, or Geraldton. We mainly got everywhere in the evenings, and left early morning. The trip is fast paced, and a full day at one, or both of these would have been great. I know this would add cost, and make the tour longer, but they seemed like lovely places to explore and almost everyone said they would have liked to have stayed at Monkey Mia for atleast a day. I personally loved the trip and seeing the different areas of Western Australia. It is not an area I heard too much about and I am glad I decided to do the tour. I would like to once again thank, Geoff for his fantastic work ethic, and showing us some wonderful scenery/wildlife in Western Australia. It was clear that he loves his job. I feel we all had a magical night on the beach while stargazing and seeing baby turtles. A night to remember! If you go to do this trip, make sure to take a fly net for your head. There are lots of them!
A great tour with an excellent driver/guide, Carlos, full of information, well organized and sensitive to our needs. Lots of wonderful places to see and experience from sunrise to sunset. Long bus rides at times and a full bus so little room to stretch out. But worth traveling the distances. Highly recommend the one way tour and fly out from Exmouth

Western Australia Holiday Packages

From metropolitan cities to stunning blue seas and rugged desert plains, an extraordinary adventure awaits you in western australia..

Western Beach, Kooljaman at Cape Leveque (2)

Western Australia is a vast expanse of land, home to diverse landscapes, rich indigenous culture and fascinating history. Whether you’re a gourmet traveller or wilderness adventurer, you’ll find yourself wanting to explore every inch of this incredible state.

Taking the title of Australia’s sunniest capital city, Perth is the ultimate combination of city chic and coastal beauty. In the bustling city centre are sleek bars, world-class restaurants and a thriving arts culture. Only a short distance away are sandy beaches where you can take a dip in the Indian Ocean, or visit Rottnest Island, where you can spot unique wildlife while hiking through native bushland. A stones’ throw from the city, Swan Valley is the state’s oldest wine-growing region. Slow down and feast on exquisite local produce or sample award-winning wines.

WA’s Margaret River Region is famous world-wide as a wine lovers’ paradise, but you can find so much more in this fabulous area than just great vino. Past rolling vineyards you will see breath-taking coastal scenery and lush green forests, and natural wonders that make the south west one of the most biodiverse places in the world. Watch humpback whales on their annual migration, try premium local truffles or frolic through fields of wildflowers.

Sugarloaf Rock, Leeuwin-Naturaliste National Park

In the North West of the state, you will be awestruck by the magnificent landscapes you find. The Kimberley region boasts iconic red sands, the remarkable Bungle Bungle Range, spectacular gorges and majestic waterfalls. Here you will find Aboriginal rock art, created by one of the oldest cultures on earth, and natural wonders forged over millions of years. Broome is the gateway to this unique region, where you will find pristine beaches, jaw-dropping wilderness and friendly locals ready to welcome you to this amazing place.

Follow the Coral Coast and explore the world’s most diverse marine habitats, perfect for anyone who wants to soak up sea and sun. This area is home to the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Shark Bay and Ningaloo Reef, the largest fringing reef in the world. Here you may be lucky enough to swim with friendly dolphins or magnificent whale sharks – a whole world lies just below the surface of its turquoise waters.

You will be captivated by the colours of WA’s Golden Outback, from bright white sandy beaches to sweeping red deserts. You’ll find fascinating history in the old mining towns of Kalgoorlie and Kookynie, as well as striking natural phenomena, from the imposing Mt Augustus to the untouched beauty of Esperance.

Gantheaume Point, Broome

Best time to visit:

As the largest state in Australia (and the second largest state in the world) Western Australia has a diverse landscape with a Mediterranean climate in the south, desert in the east and tropical conditions in the north. If you’re chasing a sun-soaked holiday, you’re sure to find it in Western Australia.

Perth is Australia’s sunniest capital city, bathed in sunshine for an average of nine hours a day, 131 days a year. This makes it perfect for city slickers who love the great outdoors, and it also boasts a mild climate, reaching around 29°C in summer and 12°C in winter.

Margaret River

The Margaret River Region has plenty of sunshine and a Mediterranean climate. Temperatures in summer are usually between 25 to 35°C and drop to 8 to 16°C in winter, so you can hit the surf or curl up in front of the fire.

Broome & The North West

You’ll find a much more tropical climate in the north of WA. A great spot for a winter escape, Broome and the North West enjoy temperatures of up to 29°C between April and September during the dry season. By contrast, the green season from October to March brings tropical storms and high humidity, with temperatures in the high-30s.

The Coral Coast

You will be able to explore this amazing part of Australia anytime with warm weather all year round – head south to Exmouth for a milder, Mediterranean climate, or further north for a slightly more humid, sub-tropical environment.

The Golden Outback

The Golden Outback spans more than half of WA and has a diverse landscape, so its climate varies depending on which region you are in. Temperatures range from 15°C in winter and can reach up to 37°C in summer.

Ord River near Kununurra

Attractions & Things to Do

You will have plenty of opportunities to get back to nature and even get up close and personal with wildlife in WA. The exquisite Ningaloo Reef is a snorkeller’s dream, located near the idyllic Coral Bay. Immerse yourself in spectacular marine environments as you swim through crystal clear waters alongside fish, turtles, manta rays and more. If you’re lucky, you may even come across a whale shark, the biggest fish in the ocean. These gentle giants can be found off the coast between March and July every year, so keep an eye out for their majestic spotted fins.

For those content to stay on land, there are still plenty of wildlife spotting opportunities available in WA. Venture to the charming Rottnest Island, only a short trip from Perth, and you will likely encounter a quokka, one of Australia’s friendliest – and cutest – creatures. These furry little marsupials are so curious they often come right up to visitors, giving you chance to snap an iconic “quokka selfie”, made famous by celebrities like Hugh Jackman and Chris Hemsworth. Just resist the temptation to touch these adorable animals and make sure you give the quokkas their space.

Quokka on Rottnest Island (2)

WA is also home to some of the most magnificent natural landscapes in the world. Wilderness lovers can venture into the Kimberley region in the north of the state, where you will step into otherworldly terrain and witness geological marvels that are millions of years old, like the iconic Bungle Bungle Ranges or the astonishing Chamberlain Gorge.

Stray south towards the Golden Outback, which stretches from the rugged red earth of Mt Augustus and Kennedy Ranges in the north to the sweeping beaches of Esperance and the South Coast. Here, you will find totally unique natural wonders, from the stunning granite cliff known as Wave Rock, to colourful wildflowers with more than 12,000 species to be seen. Swim in the bright blue seas of Greens Pool, or for a picture-perfect Instagram moment, venture to Lake Hillier and admire its bubblegum pink waters.

Experience the best of Western Australia by adding one-of-a-kind experiences to your package when you purchase a WA holiday.

Best Restaurants & Places to Eat

Western Australia is a gourmand’s paradise, where you can indulge in fresh seafood, world-class wine and even decadent black truffles.

Your first stop on your foodie tour of WA should be the Margaret River, where you will find an abundance of award-winning wineries. Though relatively small in size, this incredible area produces 20% of the country’s premium wine. With over 95 cellar doors to choose from, you can spend a few days exploring vineyards and sipping on world-class wine, all while soaking up exquisite views from farmland to coastal landscapes.

Wine aficionados will also love exploring the Swan Valley, home to some of the oldest vineyards in the state. Here you will find family-run wineries and boutique breweries. Enjoy the laidback pace of this beautiful valley and explore award-winning wineries by car, or for those wanting even more old-world charm, you can try travelling by horse-drawn wagon.

Looking for even more gourmet produce? East of the Margaret River, you will find Manjimup, the largest producer of Superior Perigold Truffles in the Southern Hemisphere. An annual festival is held every year in June to celebrate the start of truffle season which runs until September. A visit to Manjimup during this period is a unique opportunity to learn more about these unique culinary delights and taste them for yourself.

And of course, the capital of Perth offers plenty of excellent dining options. Here, you will discover passionate chefs, baristas and brewers, all of whom are dedicated to sharing the amazing flavours and produce of this region. Head to Wildflower for fine-dining with panoramic city views, enjoy hearty meals straight from the woodfire oven at Manuka Woodfire or try Propeller for Middle Eastern delights served in the grungy-chic surrounds of a converted garage. No matter what kind of dishes you’re craving, you’re sure to find it in Perth.

Wills Domain, Margaret River

Where to Stay

Whether you’re planning a chic city break or a luxe glamping adventure, you will have plenty to choose from in WA.

Try the Crown Metropol for distinct contemporary style and excellent hospitality, where you can kick back in an elegant room in the heart of the city. Or stay at Hyatt Regency Perth, a hotel offering timeless charm and a stunning location on the foreshore parklands of the picturesque Swan River.

If you’re dreaming of a getaway in the Margaret River Region, you will be spoilt for choice with luxurious villas, family-friendly resorts or beautiful glamping bungalows to choose from. Australian Visa: Do I Need One?

When travelling internationally, a visa may be required to the destination you are visiting. It is each traveller’s responsibility to ensure they are holding a current visa. Please take the time to visit our preferred vendor website Visa’s Direct to assist you with any visa application requirements and processes.

Please ensure that you have a current passport before travelling. Your passport needs an accurate photo and should be valid for at least six months after you are scheduled to return home. It should also have at least two blank pages left for passport stamps.

Allow plenty of time if you need to send your passport to the Passport Office for renewal, particularly prior to peak travel periods.

All travellers, especially honeymooners, should ensure that names in passports are those given out on the booking form. Airline tickets must be booked in the same name that appears on your passport.

It is useful to carry photo ID with you at all times, so get several good quality photocopies. This also makes replacing a lost passport easier.
