The 13 Best Beaches in the United States

Every square inch of beach is striking in its own way

visit to a beach

We're dedicating  our July features  to the world’s most beautiful and unique beaches and islands. There’s never been a better way to beat the heat than to head to the sensational coastlines and calm waters that nab a starring role in our dreams. Dive into our features to learn more about  the biggest beach party you might not have heard of , how swimwear impacts climate change , the remote Tahitian village preparing for the world stage , and the best beaches in the United States.

Just how many miles of shoreline does the United States have? About 95,471, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration —and while every square inch is striking in its own way, certain regions of the country are blessed with the most beautiful sands and surf. We’ve zeroed in on the absolute best options from coast to coast, so all you have to do is decide which beachy vibe speaks to your sea-loving soul.

Destin-Fort Walton Beach, Florida

For a passport-free vacation that oozes Caribbean vibes, head to Destin-Fort Walton Beach. Located along the Florida Panhandle and the Gulf of Mexico, this beach boasts sugar-fine sand made of pure quartz crystal. The result? Twenty-four miles of pristine, soft white powder that doesn’t get hot underfoot but reflects the sunlight through the ocean to create an emerald hue in the crystal-clear waters.

If you like to spend your time in the water instead of on the sand, there are plenty of opportunities for surfing, along with SCUBA and snorkel excursions. County lifeguards watch over the beach but look for daily beach flag updates for the latest on the water currents and recommendations for swimming that day.

Poipu Beach, Kauai

Even when it’s raining on the rest of the island, you can almost always count on a sunny day at Kauai’s Poipu Beach on the South Shore—and this can make the perfect backdrop for the most spectacular rainbows. This crescent-shaped beach is two beaches in one, separated by a tombolo. To the left of the sandbar is a shallow area protected from waves and dotted with lava rock, perfect for young families wishing to play in the water. And to the right, you’ll find the ideal spot for body boarding, snorkeling, and surfing.

You’ll no doubt find a few endangered Hawaiian monk seals napping in the sand (please stay at least 100 feet away from them and avoid flash photography), and during the winter months, you may even see humpback whales in the distance. There are lifeguards on duty and facilities with restrooms and showers. Bring a cooler to enjoy a bite to eat at the picnic tables.

Arcadia Beach, Oregon

Sure, the Oregon Coast is nearly synonymous with Cannon Beach because of its iconic Haystack Rock, but another gorgeous beach lies just 2 miles to the south: Arcadia Beach. “Breathtaking” is the only word that can truly capture the moment you first step onto Arcadia Beach, especially if you’re lucky enough to visit during low tide. On any given day, you’ll find families bicycling on the mile-long beach, children flying kites and dogs catching frisbees, and people playing in the surf or exploring the rock formations and tidepools. In the distance, you’ll still get to see a glimpse of Haystack.

The parking lot is small but often has room, even on sunny summer days—from there, it’s just a short walk down to the beach (you’ll encounter a section of steps). There are picnic tables and facilities. Keep an eye on the ocean levels, as the tides can change quickly.

Emerald Isle Beach, North Carolina

North Carolina’s Crystal Coast offers 85 miles of sandy beaches—while it’s all stunning, make your way to Emerald Isle Beach for its 12 miles of pristine shoreline and views of the Atlantic Ocean. Here, the average temperature hovers around 80 degrees with more than 100 feet of visibility in the crystal-clear waters.

The sand here is a beachcomber’s paradise, littered with seashells of various sizes and colors, while the entire Crystal Coast is known as a wreck diver’s dream due to all of the sunken vessels in the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Be sure to visit The Point at the end of the Isle, as this tailed-off sandbar offers panoramic views of Bogue Sound, Bogue Inlet, and Bear Island, along with spectacular sunsets. Lifeguards are on the beach stand during peak season (April to September, also when paid parking is in effect), and most beach access points have a bathroom.

La Jolla Cove, California

Snorkelers looking for a protected area that’s teeming with marine life—read: bright orange garibaldi, purple sea urchin, sea cucumbers, anemones, and starfish—should put San Diego’s La Jolla Cove high on their bucket list. This small golden crescent beach is tucked between dramatic sandstone bluffs, and it’s one of the most photographed beaches in SoCal due to its beauty (no surprise, considering La Jolla means “the Jewel”). You’re also sure to find many sea lions and seals sunbathing, as these calm waters are protected from ocean swells and currents.

Since the beach is only a 20-minute drive north from downtown San Diego, it gets pretty crowded in the summer; consider visiting in the fall instead (temps will still average 75 degrees). Parking can be difficult, though there is limited street parking if you’re lucky enough to nab a spot.

Ka'anapali Beach, Hawaii

Is chilling on a beach on Maui’s West Shore your idea of the perfect day? Kaanapali is a three-mile stretch of white sands and crystal-clear waters and one of the best beaches in Maui . One of the most famous attractions here is the nightly cliff-diving ceremony, held at sunset off the beach’s most northern cliffs (Puu Kekaa, or Black Rock)—it’s a reenactment of a feat by Maui’s revered King Kahekili, in which he tested his warriors’ loyalty and bravery.

The shallow waters here are great for snorkeling, and it’s common to see whales off the coast during winter. Some beachgoers might not like the crowds or the fact that this beach is near so many resorts and a shopping mall, but this beach remains one of the best in the country.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

As one of the longest beaches in the world—clocking in at 60 miles long—Myrtle Beach spans several communities and two state parks. There’s a wide variety of access points, each with a different atmosphere as you travel along the coast, from busy spots packed with action to the laid-back sections perfect for relaxing, depending on your preference. Refreshing year-round ocean breezes make this beach pleasant even in the heat of the summer.

If you pay to enter either state park (Myrtle Beach State Park or Huntington Beach State Park), you can park for free; otherwise, you’ll find paid parking at meters and in garages or lots. Most segments offer public bathrooms, and there are more than 2,000 restaurants along the coastline to ensure your belly stays full during a long day at the beach.

Coronado Beach, California

Take a little tour across San Diego Bay via the San Diego-Coronado Bridge, and you’ll arrive at Coronado Beach. Here, you’ll find fine golden sand that sparkles with flecks of the mineral mica against the iconic backdrop of the historic Hotel del Coronado. There are several different beaches, including Coronado Central Beach, dog-friendly North Beach, Silver Strand State Beach, Glorietta Bay Beach, and Coronado Shores Beach.

Because the ends of the beach butt up against military property, it’s not uncommon to see the Navy Seals training and fighter jets flying drills in the skies above. Most of the beaches offer restrooms and shower facilities. Look for free parking on Ocean Boulevard and at Ferry Landing Marketplace.

Padre Island National Seashore, Texas

Looking for the longest stretch of undeveloped barrier island in the world? Look no further than Padre Island National Seashore in Corpus Christi, Texas. The park protects 66 miles of coastline,  providing a haven for sea turtles and nearly 400 species of birds. Malaquite Beach on the Gulf of Mexico side is the main beach visitors frequent because this is where the visitor center is located (restrooms, showers, and picnic tables are available) and where the Kemp’s ridley sea turtle releases take place from mid-June through August. Bird Island Basin, a smaller beach on the Laguna Madre side, is a popular spot for windsurfers.

No matter which side of the beach you choose, both are pet-friendly. But because this is a protected seashore, amenities are limited, so you’ll need to plan accordingly—the nearest food, gas stations, and hotels are located 12 miles from the entrance. Five campgrounds are open year-round, and spots are available on a first-come, first-served basis (though there are no RV hook-ups in the park).

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Some beaches feel inaccessible, but not Virginia Beach—this 35-mile stretch is located within a day’s drive of two-thirds of the nation’s population. Its popularity is partly due to its three-mile Oceanfront Boardwalk, the perfect place to bike, blade, or stroll while gazing out at the Atlantic shoreline. Of course, with a beach this size, it’s broken up into several beaches, including the quieter Croatan Beach, swimming-friendly Chesapeake Bay Beach, The Oceanfront (where you’ll find the Boardwalk), kid-friendly Grommet Island Park, and secluded Sandbridge Beach. Honestly, there’s something for every beachgoer style within Virginia Beach.

During peak season, lifeguards are posted along the shoreline. Virginia Beach welcomes your four-legged fur babies year-round, with some seasonal restrictions. Parking is plentiful via city garages, lots, and metered street parking (free from Nov. 1 through March 31). Virginia Beach also serves as a flight training zone for the U.S. Navy's East Coast master jet base, so don’t be alarmed if you hear the roar of jet engines as pilots practice maneuvers.

Bowman's Beach Park, Florida

There’s no shortage of shells for visitors to comb through at Bowman’s Beach Park, one of the most stunning and popular beaches on Sanibel Island in Southwest Florida. The beach is about a quarter-mile or so from the parking lot ($5 an hour), and you’ll walk along a footbridge to get to the white sands. The picturesque stretch of beach has calm, serene waves perfect to swim in, plus there’s a playground for children, a sand volleyball court, short hiking trails, and great fishing spots. Bring your kayak if you’re so inclined, as there’s a launch pad.

Bowman’s Beach has everything you need facilities-wise, including restrooms and an outdoor shower, picnic tables and charcoal grills. Many visitors prefer to wear water shoes instead of running around barefoot, because of all the shells.

Coligny Beach, South Carolina

It doesn’t get much more idyllic than Hilton Head Island’s Coligny Beach —the white sands are perfect for frolicking in the surf and soaking up some sunshine. From the end of Pope Avenue, follow the boardwalk down to the pristine sand and straight into the Atlantic. You can walk for miles, dip in the shallow waters, or bike along the hard-packed sand. You may see some tidal pools at low tide, and turtle nesting season runs between May and October.

Coligny Beach is fully equipped with outdoor showers, changing rooms, restrooms, Adirondack chairs, swings, water fountains for kids to run through, and shaded pavilions. There’s even free Wi-Fi. The shopping plaza is packed with dining and shopping options to round out your perfect beach day.

Driftwood Beach, Georgia

There’s a reason scenes from "The Walking Dead" were filmed on Jekyll Island: Driftwood Beach is almost otherworldly, in a hauntingly beautiful, strangely romantic, graveyard-of-dead-trees sort of way. This barrier island has the feel of a secluded, remote getaway. Yet, it’s only about an hour from Savannah, Georgia, and Jacksonville, Florida. Driftwood Beach is a particularly secluded spot nestled between cool blue water and majestic live oaks—and it gets its name from the gigantic and gnarly driftwood branches adorning the sands. Don’t forget your camera, as you’ll want to do an impromptu photoshoot in this Instagram-worthy spot.

Public parking is available, and leashed pets are welcome, but visitors looking for restrooms and picnic facilities will need to visit one of the island's other beach parks.

Memorial Day weekend isn't the only time our brains should instinctually begin to daydream about the beach. In fact, any time it's not December, January or February, the beach should be on your mind. Summer vacation planning might mean returning to a seashore that's been a family tradition for years or heading to a new beach you've always wanted to visit.

Thankfully, if you live in the United States, there are plenty of options for the best beach vacation spots across the country's 50 states. Take to the East Coast, and visit Cape Cod, Massachusetts for an all-American outing, chowing down on lobster rolls and letting your feet seep into the sands. Interested more in a sophisticated, artsy scene? Check out Laguna Beach in California. You also can't go wrong with a visit to the Magic Isle (Maui) in Hawaii .

If you're still undecided about where to visit for one of your next beach vacations, here's a look at the 10 best beach vacation destinations in the U.S.

Cape Cod, Massachusetts

A beach in Cape Cod, Massachusetts

Few beach vacation spots are as quintessentially New England as this hook-shaped island. Its scenic sand dunes and shingled cottages have made it an annual summer vacation favorite for generations of Americans. A succession of charming beach towns — including Hyannis to the west, Chatham at the easternmost point and artsy Provincetown at road's end — offer house rentals, B&Bs and hotels or motels with pools and spa facilities.

And any Cape Cod beach experience must include lobster-roll lunches and sunset clambakes to make for one of the best beach vacations in the U.S. It's all wicked cool.

Laguna Beach, California

For summer R&R that includes gallery hopping, wine sipping and spa going, this upscale beach community, located about 90 minutes north of San Diego, is ideal. Several of the best beach resorts in the U.S. — Montage Laguna Beach , the Ritz-Carlton Laguna Niguel and Surf & Sand Resort , among others — are set along the area's picturesque cliffs and are perfect for a romantic couple's escape or a girlfriends' getaway.

The town is a longtime art colony (with more than 100 galleries), so it's easy to find a one-of-a-kind souvenir. The region's focus on healthy California cuisine means you'll eat well in every sense, along one of the best vacation beaches in the country.

Sanibel and Captiva Islands, Florida

To experience nature at its finest, it's hard to top Cannon Beach, a wide, wild swath of sand on the Oregon Coast about 90 minutes from Portland. Known for its dramatic rock formations (235-foot-tall Haystack being the most famous), lush rainforests (complete with waterfalls), large artist population (galleries abound) and wildlife (you can easily spot nesting puffins and grazing elk), Cannon Beach is ideal as a romantic-getaway spot for eco-loving couples.

Aside from beachcombing and surfing, hiking is the activity to do (the views from Ecola State Park are sublime), and accommodations include dozens of inns to suit all budgets.

The Hamptons, New York

The Hamptons, New York

Each summer, this string of charming villages, located on the southeast coast of Long Island, plays host to New York's A-listers — from Wall Street bigwigs to music moguls — who escape the city to weekend at beachfront estates worthy of an Architectural Digest cover.

But, if you plan ahead, more modest house rentals are also available in Southampton, East Hampton, Bridgehampton, Amagansett and Wainscott. Besides sunning and socializing, the Hamptons are known for farm stands offering fresh, local produce, restaurants specializing in Long Island seafood and farm-to-table cuisine and vineyards ideal for lazy afternoons sipping wine.

Maui, Hawaii

Maui is nicknamed "the Magic Isle" and with good reason.

In addition to its famous beaches (Kaanapali, Wailea and Makena, to name a few), this Hawaiian island is home to Haleakala (a surreal volcanic crater that's 10,023 feet above sea level), Molokini (a crescent-shaped, offshore lava formation offering superb snorkeling ), Upcountry (a lush area with historic cowboy towns and lavender farms) and Hana (a remote spot perched on black-lava landscape and accessible solely via the twisting, turning Hana Highway).

Add in humpback whales (from November to March), spinner dolphins and a half dozen golf courses, and Maui has something for everyone.

Newport, Rhode Island

Whether you're into surfing, sailing or touring Gilded Age mansions, Newport is a beach vacation destination with a star-spangled pedigree. Its largest beach, Ruggles, is sweeping crescent of sand favored by surfers. Its historic Thames Street is lined with antique shops, pubs and seafood restaurants.

Choose from an array of romantic inns ( the Chanler at Cliff Walk and Forty 1 North , for instance) or full-service hotels ( Newport Marriott or Hotel Viking ). For active sightseeing, stroll or jog the scenic 3½-mile Cliff Walk with grand mansions on one side and the sailboat-studded waters of Narragansett Bay on the other.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

Want to tick another state off your visited list? Then make it Alabama, where Gulf Shores offers nature (it's home to 6,500-acre Gulf State Park), entertainment (outdoor concerts) and foodie fun (from shrimp to barbecue).

In total, there are 32 miles of white-sand beaches that let you explore the region's beautiful landscapes, as you spy on seabirds and eagles, alligators and even black bears. Accommodations include condo rentals, B&Bs, motels, hotels and campsites.

Providenciales, Turks and Caicos

Providenciales is home to Grace Bay Beach, which made Tripadvisor’s list of the top 25 beaches in the Caribbean as well as SmarterTravel’s own list of the 10 best Caribbean beaches .

“Provo” is the picture-perfect Caribbean destination, one that’s been discovered but not overrun. There are clear turquoise waters, coral reefs for snorkeling, and soft white sand where you can beach comb for miles without encountering crowds. Groove to ripsaw music with the locals and savor conch fritters and jerk chicken at the outdoor island fish fry on Thursday nights.

Bali, Indonesia

Find your beach nirvana on the southern peninsula of Bali, where scenes from Eat, Pray, Love were filmed. Spirituality infuses many aspects of daily life here, so expect encounters with local traditions that prompt a little soul searching.

Among Bali’s best beaches are Kelingking Beach , which requires some 500 steps to access (but don’t worry, the jaw-dropping views from above are worth it); and Gunung Payung Beach , one of the island’s hidden gems.

Where to stay: Highlights of a stay at the dreamy Seminyak Beach Resort & Spa include the warm, friendly service and the infinity pool overlooking the ocean.

Maui, hawaii, tropicdreams/shutterstock.

Maui is among America’s most iconic bucket-list beach destinations. Its beaches—including Kaanapali Beach and Kapalua Beach —consistently rank among the best in the world. And what Maui lacks in affordability, it makes up for in beauty and novelty far beyond the perfect palm-fringed beaches.

Experience fire dancing at luaus, sunrise hikes to dormant volcano summits, and countless waterfalls along the curvy drive to Hana . And it’s now a little more affordable to get there: Southwest started regular service to Maui (and other Hawaiian destinations) from select West Coast cities in 2019.

Where to stay: Each spacious unit at Aston at The Whaler on Kaanapali Beach includes a full kitchen and a private balcony.

Ringed with silky white sand, Grenada, the Caribbean’s “Spice Island,” even smells like paradise with all the nutmeg grown here. While you can find cruise passengers and hawkers if you go looking for them (at Grand Anse Beach, for instance), the beauty of this island lies in its quieter corners, including Morne Rouge Beach , the underwater sculpture park , and rainforest trails.

Where to stay: The cottages and hotel rooms at Petite Anse Beachfront Hotel & Restaurant are located on a secluded beach in the northern part of the island.

Fernando de noronha, brazil, marcelo alex/shutterstock.

A 21-island archipelago and natural UNESCO World Heritage site 224 miles off the northern coast of Brazil, Fernando de Noronha is home to three of the world’s top-ranked beaches. One of them, Baia do Sancho , ranked in the top three on Tripadvisor’s 2021 list of the best beaches in the world.

The archipelago limits the number of visitors to protect its delicate ecosystems and wildlife. Those lucky enough to experience Noronha’s secluded beaches will see crystalline waters flanked by reddish sand, volcanic cliffs covered in lush vegetation, and dramatic sightings of the local spinner dolphins.

Is your favorite No. 1? Here are the top 10 beaches worldwide, according to Tripadvisor

visit to a beach

A trip to the beach is always a good idea.

Beaches rank as the top preferred vacation destination among 34% of Americans, according to a 30A Company 2022 survey of 1,040 U.S. adults. Even just the act of planning a vacation can make someone happy.

You likely understand why if you’ve ever spent time on a beach. The place where the water meets the land is a treat for the senses, from the sound of the water lapping the sand to the crisp scent of the salt in the air. Beaches are some of the most beautiful places.

Relaxing beachside is beneficial for your well-being , too. Saltwater has been found to release negative ions that help people feel calmer, and the meditative sound of waves can offer a sense of grounding. Even if you’re not frolicking in the water, the beach is where people can easily connect with nature, which is healing.

Luckily, there are beautiful beaches everywhere, from places renowned for postcard-perfect beaches like Turks and Caicos to the rugged cliffside beaches of Italy. Tripadvisor recently released its 2024 Travelers’ Choice Award for Beaches, which analyzed reviews and ratings between Oc. 1, 2022, and Sept. 30, 2023, to come up with the best beaches worldwide.

If you're not into rough waves: This little beach earned the top spot of the calmest beaches in North America

“Who doesn't love a beach? It's certainly my happy place – my kids playing in the surf, the sun sinking behind the horizon. And as the breadth and depth of Tripadvisor's Travelers' Choice Beach lists show, our community is obsessed with them, too,” Sarah Firshein, head of Tripadvisor editorial, told USA TODAY in a statement.

While last year’s best beaches included a wide variety of striking natural landscapes, this year’s awards brought back the picturesque soft sands and crystal-clear waters people imagine when they think of a beach vacation.

Here are the top 10 best beaches around the world, according to Tripadvisor.

10. Varadero Beach – Varadero, Cuba

A former fishing town, Varadero Beach is situated on the Hicacos Peninsula and stretches along the Caribbean Sea. The sprawling beach actually comprises six beaches , including Varadero, Rincón Francés and La Alameda, so there’s plenty of space to spread out. Visitors enjoy taking a refreshing dip in the vibrant water, snorkeling the sea beds, or water sports like jet skiing or windsurfing.

9. Siesta Beach – Siesta Key, Florida, U.S.

Snagging the spot as Tripadvisor's second-best beach in the U.S.,Siesta Beach is located on the stunning barrier island of Siesta Key in Florida. This slice of paradise is renowned for its white quartz sand, which is often called the softest sand in the world. A free island-wide trolley service makes it easy for guests to go to and from the beach.

8. Eagle Beach – Aruba, Caribbean

Aruba’s wide Eagle Beach stole people’s hearts last year by ranking as the second-best beach in the world. This idyllic beach is known for its calm waters and the chance to catch nesting turtles in summer. Eagle Beach invites visitors to unwind in paradise, whether basking in the sun's warmth, snorkeling amidst marine life, or simply strolling along its picturesque shores.

7. Manly Beach – Sydney, Australia

Manly Beach is known as the birthplace of surfing in Australia, having hosted the world’s first modern surfing contest in 1964. Besides trying out surfing, visitors can swim, dive, or sail along the stunning shoreline. Manly Beach is a long stretch of sand and includes a small cove, an enclosed swimming area for families and Shelly Beach, a sheltered spot for snorkeling. When people need respite from the sun and sand, they can walk the tree-lined promenade for food or shopping.

6. Anse Lazio – Praslin Island, Seychelles

Tucked into a bay on Praslin Island, Anse Lazio feels like a hidden oasis. The background of the pristine shoreline and azure sea are lush tropical greenery and large boulders. On Tripadvisor, visitors said they enjoyed playing in the waves or grabbing a drink at the on-site beach bar.

5. Grace Bay Beach – Grace Bay, Turks and Caicos

This Caribbean beach earned the same ranking in last year’s Tripadvisor Travelers’ Choice Award for Beaches, and it’s no wonder why. Facing the Atlantic Ocean, Grace Bay Beach captivates visitors with its tranquil ambiance since the turquoise waters are never rough, thanks to an offshore reef. Since the beach is part of the Princess Alexandra National Park , it remains pristine and unspoiled.

4. Kaanapali Beach – Lahaina, Hawaii, U.S.

Often called the best beach in the U.S. , Kaanapali Beach offers sparkling warm water and soft white sand. The one-mile-long beach is the ultimate beach escape for anyone, offering cliff-jumping, paddleboarding, snorkeling or just frolicking in its gentle waters. And since the beach is west-facing, it’s the perfect place to watch the sunset.

How to support Maui: 5 locally owned hotels to consider for a responsible visit

3. La Concha Beach – San Sebastian, Spain

With a long coastline comprising over 4,265 feet, La Concha Beach is a renowned jewel of the Basque Country. Located in the charming fishing town of San Sebastian, this picturesque bay is framed by rolling hills and an uninhabited island people can also visit. A charming promenade with restaurants and amusement offers guests a place to explore off-sand.

2. Spiaggia dei Conigli – Lampedusa, Italy

There’s much to enjoy at Spiaggia dei Conigli – or Rabbit Beach, a nod to the native rabbits that inhabit the area – besides the clear waters and white granite cliffs. Located on the island of Lampedusa off the Sicilian coast, the beach is only accessible by boat or a 15-minute trek by foot, but it’s well worth it. During the summer, it becomes one of the few places in the country where loggerhead sea turtles lay their eggs.

1. Praia da Falésia – Olhos de Agua, Portugal

Vast golden sands and bright blue water help make Praia da Falésia the most beautiful beach in the world, which ranked sixth place last year. With dramatic ombre cliffs of reds and oranges, this beach immerses its visitors in pristine natural beauty. According to Tripadvisor reviews, many visitors to the sprawling beach relished how uncrowded it felt.

12 best budget beach destinations in the US

Lori Zaino

Editor's Note

Island-hopping around French Polynesia or retreating to a luxurious beach house in the Hamptons doesn't tally with everyone's budget — especially this summer.

Airfares will once again surpass pre-pandemic averages, according to the travel forecasting site Hopper , and, as anyone looking to book a beach vacation this summer will testify, sky-high prices may put a damper on travel. Hotel data provider STR anticipates U.S. hotel rates will increase by 2% this year, meaning rates will remain high.

Budget travelers anxious for a sun-and-sand getaway may wonder if they can afford a seaside escape.

visit to a beach

However, certain beach destinations are more affordable than others, and it's totally feasible to have a great cheap beach vacation if you select the right spot.

Here are some of the best budget beach vacations in the U.S. for those wanting a relaxing oceanfront or lakefront getaway without breaking the bank.

Gulf Shores, Alabama

visit to a beach

Gulf Shores and Orange Beach offer more than 32 miles of white sand along Alabama's Gulf coast. Lodging is as affordable as it gets, with six campgrounds in close proximity to the expansive stretch of shoreline.

The area caters to budget travelers — its tourism website even offers wallet-friendly themed blog posts about cheap and free things to do or where to get lunch for less than $15.

Also, a day at Gulf State Park is all about low-cost fun. Visitors can enjoy sprawling beaches, a nature center and dedicated fishing areas. They can even cycle throughout the park's 6,000 acres thanks to a bike-sharing program (complimentary for up to three hours). Another draw: Parking only costs $10 per day.

Where to stay : If you are a Hilton loyalist (or camping isn't your thing), earn or redeem points at The Lodge at Gulf State Park, A Hilton Hotel. It has a secluded location overlooking the Gulf of Mexico, an infinity-edge swimming pool and access to more than 28 miles of trails. Low-season rates start at just $109 or 36,000 Hilton Honors points per night. Expect to pay around $300 per night (or 70,000 points) during the peak summer season, though.

The Outer Banks, North Carolina

visit to a beach

Home to Cape Hatteras National Seashore, the Outer Banks is ideal for all types of travelers.

Traveling with the family? The Outer Banks has several skate parks where your teens and tweens can hang out for free. For travelers who want to brave the swells, a handful of surf shops offer weekly board rentals for as low as $69 — they'll even deliver to your accommodation for free.

Where to stay : With close to 20 different campgrounds and recreational vehicle parks (some costing as low as $30 per night), plus many home rentals for less than $200 per night, visitors don't have to overspend to enjoy around 175 miles of barrier island fun.

South Padre Island, Texas

visit to a beach

South Padre Island has a reputation for being a busy spring break spot, but this Texas barrier island is ideal for nature enthusiasts on a budget. It's home to the 43-acre South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center, which features a butterfly garden, a five-story bird-watching observation tower, a boardwalk and an alligator sanctuary, all accessible for $10 for adults and $5 for kids ages 4 to 12.

South Padre Island also hosts a number of complimentary festivities, such as frequent firework displays, Sandcastle Days and music-themed events on the beach, like bongo drumming nights.

Where to stay : The oceanfront Courtyard South Padre Island has simple, modern rooms, a saltwater swimming pool and a lively outpost of the popular Bar Louie gastro-pub chain. Rates start at $101 or 15,000 Marriott Bonvoy points per night. You can also book a room at one of the smaller inns or bed-and-breakfast accommodations in the area, which are often less than $100 per night.

Grand Isle, Louisiana

visit to a beach

Visitors to the barrier island of Grand Isle can enjoy white-sand beaches and warm waters (almost) year-round. At Grand Isle State Park, free activities include hiking along miles of nature trails and fishing, which is considered the best in the state. Rent canoes, bikes and paddleboats for a small fee at the park office.

Fishing rodeos at the Bridge Side Marina draw anglers from across Louisiana. There are several fishing shops from which to choose, so rates for baits, poles, hooks and even chartered fishing tours remain low thanks to plenty of competition.

Where to stay : With around 50 premium campsites and 14 beach tent campsites, there's a camping experience to fit every style of traveler, regardless of budget. As a result, even those who want to sleep on the beach will find an option ideal for them.

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

visit to a beach

Luquillo, Puerto Rico

visit to a beach

Once you've explored Old San Juan , skip the nearby beach in Condado, a pricier spot with luxe hotels and trendy Miami vibes. Instead, head east for about 45 minutes to the golden sands of Luquillo.

Here, you can trade high-rise hotels for palm trees and bask in the authentic sights and sounds of real Puerto Rico , such as reggaeton played from the back of a truck. For lunch, stroll over to the famous Luquillo kiosks that front the beach. You can choose from more than 60 family-run eateries that specialize in cheap, local delicacies.

Where to stay : There are over 200 Airbnb properties in the Luquillo area, many of which cost less than $200 (or even $100) per night. It's also a quick drive to El Yunque National Forest, the only tropical rainforest on U.S. soil. Admission is free, but entrance requires a reservation.

Although pricier than other properties on this list, one of TPG's favorite Wyndham properties , the Wyndham Grand Rio Mar Puerto Rico Gold & Beach Resort, is just 5 miles from Luquillo. Rates start at $300 or 30,000 Wyndham Rewards points per night in the low season.

Ocean City, Maryland

visit to a beach

Sacred Cove and Abalone Cove Shoreline Park Los Angeles Beach

One of the biggest draws of the Los Angeles area is the beach scene (especially when you've had enough of the traffic). We put together our list of some of the best spots in the L.A. area to relax by the Pacific, whether you have a dog, want to hang glide, fancy a snorkel or a kayak, can’t do without catching some waves on your surfboard, enjoy birding, or just have a hankering to swim and nap. Behold, our picks for the best beaches in and around Los Angeles, with tips for how to make the most of each one.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Paradise Cove

Paradise Cove Beach Arrow

Paradise Cove Beach is a tiny, public/private beach tucked beneath the cliffs of Malibu. It's mostly under the auspices of the Paradise Cove Beach Café, who provide all the amenities, but you can access the beach for free if you want to swim or surf. Many who visit come to rent out the private terraces, beach beds, and lounges, and if you can pony up the cash (the private terraces can run almost $800 on the most expensive weekend days), it's one of the most relaxing spots in Malibu. If you want to get a great beach walk in, stroll from Escondido to Paradise Cove, and you’ll have earned that glass of rosé at sunset.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Venice

Venice Beach Arrow

Come to Venice Beach for the mile-and-a-half of silky sands, where you can lay down a blanket on and gaze out into the Pacific, and stay for the beloved Venice Beach Boardwalk, where street performers and vendors busk and sell their wares, muscle men lift huge amounts of weight, and subcultures congregate. It’s a lively spot for those who like a bit of excitement with their beach day.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Carbon Beach

Carbon Beach (Billionaire's Beach) Arrow

Carbon Beach isn't a private beach, but it feels like one. You'll encounter a few other folks as you walk behind the homes of the ultra-wealthy, but otherwise, this long stretch of beach is about as secluded as Malibu gets. The water is excellent for swimming, calm with no rocks, and the sand is soft and cozy—perfect to laze out on all afternoon. Carbon Beach is best for a quiet walk or a jog. There are few places in Malibu that aren't overrun with people, and this is one of them, so enjoy that to the fullest.

Sacred Cove and Abalone Cove Shoreline Park Los Angeles Beach

Sacred Cove and Abalone Cove Shoreline Park Arrow

Sacred Cove and Abalone Cove Shoreline Park, a coastal hike, leads to a secluded cove that's marked by stunning tide pools and rock formations. If you're looking for a sunbathing beach, this isn't it, but if you're after natural beauty, you've come to the right spot: The tide pools filled with starfish, sea anemones, and abalone shells, and the views out to sea are spectacular—on a clear day you can see Catalina Island .

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Santa Monica State Beach

Santa Monica State Beach Arrow

Santa Monica is one of the most iconic beaches in the Greater Los Angeles area. Its long white sandy beaches, pier, and Annenberg Community Beach House define it, and it's always teeming with activity and people. Roller coaster rides, Segways, pancakes, luxury hotels —you can get almost anything you need on Santa Monica Beach and its famous white sand's not too bad either. If you don't find something to do there, you're not looking.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Leo Carillo

Leo Carrillo State Park Arrow

Leo Carrillo State Park is an ecologically diverse spot with rocky crags jutting into the ocean, Malibu mountains to hike , and pristine water with rich tide pools. Set on 1.5 miles of perfect beach, it’s a paradise for surfers, swimmers, beach loungers, windsurfers, fishing enthusiasts, and curious explorers of coastal caves. Though the water at Leo Carrillo is accommodating for any type of visitor, the best part is the beach’s campground shaded by giant sycamore trees.

Huntington Beach Los Angeles Beaches

Huntington City Beach Arrow

Set amid a 121-acre park that was established in 1942 and spans the tippity-top of Orange County, the Huntington City Beach is the most iconic beach on this stretch. It's known for its surf breaks, International Surfing Museum, and vibrant day and nightlife. There are tons of surf shops if you want to rent a board or buy a towel, plus heaps of restaurants, bars, local breweries, and a really cute pier. And though it's not on the beach you'd remiss if you didn't get a fish taco at Normita's Surf City Taco, a local favorite.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Point Dume

Point Dume State Beach Arrow

Point Dume is situated at the end of Malibu at a point that juts into the Pacific with a dramatic cliff’s edge and drops down to a beautiful crescent-shaped beach. The water is crystal clear, making it a perfect place to swim on a sweltering summer day, and a great scuba spot where sea lions are known to swim around with you. The beach is also famous for being a great spot to learn how to rock climb. It has a little bit of something for everybody.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches El Matador

El Matador State Beach Arrow

El Matador is the kind of beach an Angeleno immediately takes you to from the airport. It's a natural beauty—hidden away down a steep staircase with dramatic craggy rock formations that seem to have risen from the Pacific, plus tide pools that offer a glimpse at our undersea friends. If you decide to check them out for photos or simple exploration, make sure to wear water shoes as the rocks can be difficult to navigate. There are zero services or amenities at El Matador—it's a natural wonder. Bring your own beach towels, sunscreen, and picnic gear, and you'll be all set for the day.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach Arrow

Main Beach, situated right in the middle of downtown Laguna Beach, is usually bustling during the summer months. But those who aren’t afraid of a crowd will enjoy lots of amenities including volleyball and basketball courts, a boardwalk that runs the entire length of the beach, and the all-important playground for the kids. Plus the sand in the water is soft, which makes Main Beach a perfect spot to beat the heat with a nice swim.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Dockweiler

Dockweiler State Beach Arrow

Dockweiler State Beach is a long, sandy beach just to the south of LAX. It’s one of the most easily accessible beaches in LA , and parking is plentiful (at $6 to $13 per car, depending on the season). It’s a great hang gliding spot and a nice swimming zone, too, with gentle breezes and still water to paddle out in. The water itself is crystal clear, and soft sands make for nice barefoot walks. Whether you're looking to swim, enjoy an evening beachside barbecue, or take a hang gliding lesson, Dockweiler is a solid bet.

Manhattan Beach Los Angeles Beaches

Manhattan Beach Arrow

Though it’s far from hidden, Manhattan Beach is the embodiment of the California lifestyle you grew up watching on TV: a stretch of sand dotted with year-round tans, good-looking people playing volleyball, beach cruisers gliding by with toy dogs in their baskets, and cute, family-owned restaurants and bars. You can drive and park, of course, but it's just as easy to access this beach on two wheels: Take a bike ride along the Marvin Braude Bike Trail from Redondo or even as far away Santa Monica —it's a workout and a sightseeing tour in one.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Surfrider

Surfrider Beach Arrow

Surfrider Beach is small, about a mile long, but it’s a gem. The wooden pier is perfect for selfies and saltwater fishing, and the water is clean and perfect for swimming. A little further out, Surfrider becomes an ideal surf spot—it’s not called Surfrider for nothing. Just to the west of the beach is Malibu Lagoon, a state park with ample birding, and a path around the estuary lined with native plants. Every surfer has to ride the waves at Surfrider once in their life, but it's a perfect spot for lounging, birding, and kayaking, too.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Will Rogers

Will Rogers State Beach Arrow

Will Rogers benefits from being between the Pacific Palisades and Topanga—it's a sort of no man's land that makes it less crowded than most of the nearby beaches, despite its proximity to Santa Monica . (You won't feel like someone's always treading on your towel or standing in your sunlight.) It's one of those big wide beaches with plenty of room for everyone to relax in the sun. Plus, there are clean bathrooms to change in and a number of beach volleyball courts.

Los Angeles Beach Beaches Bolsa Chica

Bolsa Chica State Beach Arrow

Bolsa Chica is known for a three-mile long sandy beach that never gets too crowded, a paved biking and jogging path, and the Bolsa Chica Ecological Reserve. The beach itself is miles of fluffy sand—it's almost a requirement to go barefoot—with sandbars that allow you to walk far out into the ocean without getting into deep water. The surf at Bolsa Chica is cold but clean, so swimming, surfing, and bodysurfing are popular activities—if you can bear the chilly water along the Pacific Coast Highway . It's a great spot for outdoorsy types who enjoy birding, biking, surfing, and fishing.

Bruce's Beach Manhattan Beach

Bruce's Beach  Arrow

In the 1920s, Willa and Charles Bruce built a resort known as Bruce's Beach—complete with a bath house, dance hall and cafe—to serve fellow Black residents of Manhattan Beach, making it one of the few beaches they could use due to segregation. Not surprisingly, the couple was harassed for their efforts, and eventually, in 1924, the city of Manhattan Beach used eminent domain to force them off their land to turn it into a park. In a landmark decision by LA County, the land will be returned to the Bruce family. But you can still visit the public park and the beach below to visit this important piece of Black history in LA.

Lechuza Beach Malibu

Lechuza Beach Arrow

This lesser-known Malibu beach has similarly gorgeous rock formations to the ones you’d find at El Matador, but is far less crowded—so much less crowded it could practically be considered private. The tide pooling is fantastic here, but the beach is still sandy if you want to spread out. You can find access via the cul-de-sac at Bunnie Lane, where you’ll enter through a tree-covered corridor and a few flights of stairs.

5. Collect Seashells or Rocks

As far as affordable activities on a trip go, you can’t get a much cheaper one than collecting seashells and rocks—it’s free on most beaches. Just make sure it’s acceptable before removing them from the beach!

Collect Seashells or Rocks

6. Collect Driftwood

If you want to collect something other than seashells, why not try getting some driftwood by the beach instead? If you are good with your hands, you can even turn the driftwood into lovely home furniture like a chair, a table, and so much more!

But wait! Before you collect driftwood, be sure to check out the state regulations first regarding the collection of driftwood on the beach you are in, as it varies in each state.

7. Daydream

It’s almost too easy to daydream while at the beach, especially on a quiet day. Add to that the sound of the waves and the birds, and the clouds lazily floating by, and you’ll find your mind drifting with them as well.

8. Indulge in Fruity Drinks

A day at the beach is never complete without sipping on some fruity tropical goodness at a beach bar, whether it be fruit punches, coconuts, piña coladas, and more!

12. Collect Glass

Mind you, this is not your usual type of glass! Bottles or broken glass (and the like) left by the shore and battered by the waves and sand for years turn into smooth, colorful ‘stones’ called beach or sea glass.

Below are some of the best places for finding sea glasses:

  • Glass Beach in Fort Bragg, California
  • Kauai Sea Glass Beach In Eleele, Hawaii
  • La Jolla Cove In San Diego, California

Since most sea glass beaches prohibit or highly discourage people from taking home sea glass, you can take a photo of them instead. If you are up for the challenge, look for rare colors like gray, pink, or black, to name a few!

13. Go Ocean Fishing

Unlike fishing on a lake or river, ocean fishing (also called deep-sea fishing) will require nerves of steel and some level of strength due to the size of fishes in the deep parts of the ocean.

Even though it is challenging, it can be a thrilling (and even scary) experience!

14. Take a Hike

Spending a day at the beach does not have to be in and around the water only. Depending on where you are, there is also the opportunity to go on a hike and see more of what nature has to offer. Don’t forget to take photos of your adventure!

15. Go Kite Surfing/Windsurfing

Kite surfing is a surfing-like water sport that will get your adrenaline pumping! You may not need just as badass skills to stay standing on your board as you would with surfing, but controlling that kite while flying through water and air is a game of its own to master.

To get the best of both surfing and sailing in one fell swoop, why not add windsurfing to your adventure bucket list? It’s fun and thrilling, but also easy and safe enough for even a beginner to try out. Since even kids can start learning windsurfing, this can be a fun activity for the whole family to do together!

22. Try Hula Hooping

Not only is hula hooping something that was incredibly fun to try out as a child, but it’s a great form of exercising for adults as well. By hula hooping, you can strengthen and tone your body, especially around the core, but also hips and thighs, in addition to which it can also lead to improved flexibility. As a fun tidbit: hula hooping has actually existed as a form of exercise since the times of ancient Greeks!

23. Rent a Jet Ski

For those who love high-speed thrills and adventure, you will definitely love jet skiing! Whether you are coasting the waters of one of the best jet ski destinations in the US alone or with family or friends, riding one of these will make you feel like a star in your own movie.

It usually costs around $80 to $100+ per hour on average, along with other requirements before renting one, so be sure to check it out in advance.

24. Host a Limbo Dance Competition

How low can you go? If that doesn’t ring a bell, then you are definitely missing out! Limbo is one of the most popular dances/games in any party setting, including the beach.

25. Look for Dolphins

Getting to see dolphins in their natural habitat is one experience you should not miss when at the beach. With over 16 dolphin species swimming around in North America, you might be able to spot one during a cruise (some of which are already included in a tour).

Here is a great list that you can check out for some of the best spots for dolphin watching . Be sure to bring some binoculars!

26. Find Tide Pool Creatures

Given the rich diversity of life found in our world’s waters, it’s no wonder you’ll find fascinating creatures at tide pools along the shoreline, especially during the low tide.

If you have kids with you, they will surely love looking at these tide pool creatures with you, from crabs to starfishes to sea anemones and so much more! Of course, we also need to respect their space so as not to disturb them or their habitat.

27. Meditate

Meditation is much more than sitting in a lotus position chanting “om” over and over again—it is a way of life. Clearing your mind through meditation has many benefits, like lowering blood pressure and anxiety levels. Plus, it can give you a brighter outlook on life! Having an “empty mind” for even a few seconds can seem like a challenge, but this 10-minute guided meditation will help you along the way.

Meditate

28. Do Some Beach Yoga

Yoga may not be the most vigorous form of exercise you’ll commit while on the beach, but it’ll do wonders for your body and mind. It cares for and strengthens your body but also your mind and can even feel like meditative practice after a long day. Here are 5 beach yoga poses to try in the sand !

Do Some Beach Yoga

29. Meet New People

The beach is a place where people gather together to have fun and relax, making it a great place to meet new people.

One way to break the ice is by hosting or joining team games like beach volleyball or limbo dance. Of course, a beach bar is also a great place to hang out and meet someone new.

30. Send a Message in a Bottle

There is always something mysterious and fascinating (even romantic) about messages in a bottle. And since we are here to make lasting memories, why not send one of your own?

Just imagine letting fate take its course until someone (hopefully) finds the bottle days, months, years, even centuries later. Who knows what they’ll find inside?

You can check out this tutorial on how to make one (which is also environmentally-friendly). Or buy one online ( this one is cute !) Be sure to check out the state laws in your area as well.

Message in a Bottle

31. Paint Rock and Shells

While combing the beach, you might come across empty seashells and small stones along the way. With some acrylic paint and a little bit of creativity, you can turn them into colorful pieces of art!

Not only are they pleasant to look at, but they can also serve as a remembrance of your trip to the beach.

To help preserve the beaches, some states prohibit or limit the number of shells and stones you can take with you, so you have to check it out first.

32. Play Beach Volleyball

With scenic ocean views, the sun sprinkling down some vitamin D in your skin, plus friendly company, it’s no wonder people love a game or two of beach volleyball.

Yes, it can be a bit hard (and tiring) to move on the sand if you are a beginner. But most of the time, you won’t even notice it, especially if you are having fun!

Play Beach Volleyball

33. Play a Board Game

Some people may think board games are boring (I’m not one of them!), but they can actually be a lot of fun especially if you have the perfect game and partner/s to play with.

If you prefer a more chill day on the beach, having a board game marathon with your favorite games could be fun. You can make it even more fun by adding prizes for the winner.

Unsure of which games to play? Check out this list: Board Games Bucket List: 50 of the All Time Best Ones to Play

34. Throw a Frisbee

Playing frisbee is another sporty activity to commit to on the beach; whether that means putting together a group of people for a round or two of ultimate frisbee or just tossing it back and forth with a close friend while enjoying the sound of the waves.

35. Play I-Spy

A game of I Spy is a fun, tried-and-tested game usually played while on the road, especially during long trips. And with plenty of things to “spy with your little eye” on the beach, it can be a great addition to the games you can play with family and friends!

36. Walk the Boardwalk

Going on a walk on boardwalks is a great way to take a break from the beach while still getting to enjoy what the surrounding area has to offer.

There are over 60 boardwalks across the United States’ beaches and piers, with the most popular one (and the oldest) in Atlantic City, New Jersey. Most of them have establishments lined up along the path, such as restaurants, shops, amusement parks, and more, so you’ll have plenty of things to do, like grabbing a bite of their local cuisine or getting yourself a souvenir.

37. Compete in a Game of Tug of War

If you have a big group with you and a long rope, a friendly game of tug of war will surely fire up everyone’s competitive spirit on the beach. Not only is it a fantastic team-building game, but anyone can join in on the fun as well!

Compete in a Game of Tug of War

38. Play Tic-Tac-Toe in the Sand

A game of tic-tac-toe is easy enough for everyone (including kids) to enjoy and play while taking a break for the more challenging activities ahead.

Sounds a bit too simple? Since we are talking about the beach, we can spice it up more by doing different variations, such as a relay version of tic-tac-toe!

Play Tic-Tac-Toe in the Sand

39. Play Truth or Dare

Whether you’re playing the game one-on-one or in a group, truth or dare will surely liven up a dull and slow day at the beach. Not only will everyone get to know each other more, but it also makes for some memorable memories.

You can also do other variations of the game, like Would You Rather or Never Have I Ever.

40. Read a Book

If you are an avid reader, then those warm summer evenings on the beach make for some of the best times to just sit by your porch and read a New York Times Best Seller . This list is considered one of the most reliable when it comes to suggesting excellent books in the United States. Whether you are looking for fiction, non-fiction, auto-biographies or even a children’s book for those bedtime stories, you will find it here.

41. Just Relax

This is one of the best things to do at the beach! Everybody deserves a break every now and then, and the beach is one of the perfect go-to places for having fun and just relaxing.

You can lie down on the sand or beach chair, close your eyes, and be present at the moment. Let your worries and distractions slowly melt away under the sun or go with the ebb and flow of the waves.

42. Try Rock Stacking

Rock stacking can be traced back to prehistoric times in the form of cairns, which often serve as landmarks for trails, burial sites, or even as part of one’s tradition.

Today, rock stacking can mean different things to people, with some doing it as a meditative practice or even something on a spiritual level. Still, it is an art form that you should definitely try at least once, especially while on the beach.

Here is a fantastic guide on how to get started in the art form, which also has ‘leave-no-trace’ tips. Don’t forget to take a picture of your stacked rocks to commemorate the moment!

Try Rock Stacking

43. Make Sand Art

The beach is not only a place where you can have fun in the water and under the sun, but it is also a place to get your creativity flowing.

With the sand serving as your canvas, you can draw portraits or intricate shapes, build elaborate sandcastles or sculptures, anything! Sure, your artwork may not last forever, but the memories and experiences do.

44. Go Skinny Dipping

Skinny dipping is not only an exhilarating activity to do on the beach, but it’s also one for your sexy bucket list . It’s also an awesome way to enjoy some intimacy with your partner. But, be sure no one else is around!

45. See Fish While Snorkeling

Snorkeling lets us have a glimpse of the waters’ different marine life, something which we don’t get to do very often, especially if you live far away from the coastal areas.

The cascade of colors from the fishes, coral reefs, and the sunlight beaming from above is just marvelous to look at and will make you feel that it is indeed a different world down there.

46. Explore a Cave

Could this beach bucket list item be next on your hobby bucket list too? Lots of beaches have hidden caves to be explored—find one!

47. Start a Race in the Sand

Running across the sands of the beach might sound simple enough, but it is an activity that is more challenging than it looks, given how soft sand is compared to a hard surface like concrete.

Whether it’s a game of Bring Me or tag, a part of a relay, or just a good, old race, getting to race against someone on the beach while the crowd cheers in the background is one of the most exciting things you will experience.

48. Have a Water Gun Fight

Nothing beats cooling down while having fun splashing water at your family and friends while in the water. For added fun, be sure to bring along some water guns with you and start a water gunfight!

You can even use the water guns to do variations of games like water gun tag and more.

Need a water gun? Check out the Stream Machine Soaker !

49. Sunbathe

With most of our time spent indoors, the most popular thing to do at the beach is getting some vitamin D lovin’ from the sun!

Not only does it work wonders for your mind and body, but the tan that comes with sunbathing is always a welcome bonus that you can show off once you return from the beach.

50. Take a Stroll

There are times when we have to slow down and breathe, and a quiet stroll alone or with someone along the beach is perfect for this. No rush. Just let your senses take in the ambiance and take in the moment.

51. Take Photographs

As bucket listers, we all want to make lasting memories by doing things we once dreamed of doing. And who wouldn’t want to capture the moment in the form of a photograph?

Not only will it serve as a gentle reminder of your fun beach activities, but it can also help you get back on track if you feel like you are getting lost in life.

52. Watch the Sunset or Sunrise

Are you Team Sunrise or Team Sunset? Or are you both? Whichever you are, getting to watch the sun rising or setting on the horizon in a place like a beach is simply breathtaking.

Watch the Sunset or Sunrise

53. Write Messages in the Sand

If you want to do something a little bit easier than making sand art, you can write down messages in the sand instead.

It can be a single word that resonates with you, a simple phrase, a favorite quote, anything that comes to mind. You can even leave it there for anyone to see, and who knows, you might even make someone’s day!

54. Go Body Surfing

If this is your first time hearing it, bodysurfing involves riding a wave without using any surfboard or bodyboard. Though it is slightly ‘easier’ to learn compared to traditional surfing, it still requires a certain fitness level since you’ll be the one acting as the ‘board’ that rides with the wave.

Here is also a step-by-step guide on how to do this sport: How to Body Surf

55. Make Sand Angels

Making a snow angel on fresh snow is one of the most popular things to do in winter season . But at the beach, especially during the summer months, they also have their own version of this Christmas tradition: making sand angels!

Much like how you would make a snow angel, you just have to find a spot on the beach where you can smoothly move the sand around, lie down face up, and start swiping with your arms and legs!

Make Sand Angels

56. Climb Sand Dunes

Sand dunes are a familiar spectacle on most beaches as they are naturally formed by the elements and mainly act as barriers against strong winds and waves.

If it is allowed in your state, check if there is a trail around the sand dunes that can take you to the top!

57. Look for Shapes in the Clouds

Let your imagination run wild and see what shapes you can make out of the clouds, especially during a bright sunny day with fair weather.

You can even play a game of I Spy with family or friends with this while relaxing on the sand!

58. Dig a Hole!

There’s just something about digging in the sand that makes it fun and satisfying, especially for kids. It can be building some sand art, looking for some buried ‘treasure,’ or even just building a trench for your sandcastle.

A good rule of thumb for digging holes in the sand is for it to be no more than knee-deep to avoid any accidents. And be sure to fill them up again afterward.

59. Toss a Beach Ball Around

Passing around a beach ball while in the water is a great way to break the ice in a group or as a warm-up for the more challenging activities you will be doing. Plus, it just screams fun and is quite irresistible not to bring it back up in the air.

It is also versatile enough that you can use it in one of your games, like say, a beach version of Hot Potato, or something even more creative!

60. Ride a Boogie Board

A boogie board (also known as a bodyboard) is a small rectangular piece of hydrodynamic foam that you can use to ride waves without standing up like in surfing.

Since it is smaller in size, it is easy to bring with you along the beach, plus it will also help you get surfing fundamentals down if you are just starting out, which can also carry into surfing with a surfboard.

61. Spot a Whale

Whales are one of the most fascinating and spectacular marine mammals you’ll come across in the water. With the largest species of whales (the blue whale) reaching up to 98 feet, you will be at a loss for words when you see one.

Ready to spot these giants of the deep? Be sure to check out this site: The Best Spots for Whale Watching in the U.S.

62. Go Paddleboarding

Paddleboarding is simple enough for beginners to pick up while still opening you up for more challenging water sports in the future, like surfing or kayaking.

If you are still learning, try finding a spot where there are not many waves. Once you get the hang of it, you can slowly paddle yourself around the beach or even catch some small waves!

Go Paddleboarding

63. Jump Waves

It’s amazing how even the simplest activities can make us feel the fun and excitement of being on the beach, such as jumping waves!

It can also be a great bonding moment with the kids, letting them jump or even carrying them up just before the waves touch them. The laughter and the giggles that come with it? Priceless!

A day or two filled with beach activities  is one of the most memorable things that we get to experience in our lives. With a fun, relaxing atmosphere, picturesque views on land and under the sea, and plenty of things to do at the beach, it’s no wonder people will keep coming back for more.

So, what are you waiting for? Get yourself that much-needed dose of vitamin sea and start checking off items from your bucket list!

Well, I don’t know that there are a lot of interesting things to do in the beach until I read this post. In the next trip to the beach I’ll try some things new like climb sand dunes, camping, dig a hole and an activity can’t skip – send a message in a bottle…

Hi Annette,

It was a great share! The summer is here, and I am really looking forward to going to the beach. Going to the beach has always been my favorite activity, and I love to go there with my family and friends. Although my family is not here now. I am looking forward to going with my friends. All of these activities look super fun, and I will definitely be trying them out. Camping sounds super fun. I think I can convince a few friends to go with me. Thanks a lot for sharing these amazing ideas.

I think everyone’s looking forward for an exciting at the beach, hope you’ll have a fun filled summer.

Could you send me more fun activities you can do at the beach.

Wow great list! Saving this for when I go to the islands in Thailand next week. My partner is a bit hyperactive so I will be listing these off for him to do while a read my book in peace! Thanks for sharing!

Hope you’ll have a great visit!

Wow! I am not a natural “beach person,” but since I live in Michigan near Lake Michigan I find myself on the beach pretty regularly. You have some amazing suggestions here for great beach activities. I can’t wait to put some of these to good use! Thank you for the great post!

Glad to have added ideas for your beach activities.

hey, this is a nice article, thanks for sharing this.

you have given a good list to keep in mind, thanks for your work.

If only we were allowed to camp on the beach in the UK! I’d love to do that and listen to the sea all night as I slept. Great list, thank you.

Oh I didn’t know it’s not allowed in the UK but I hope other activities listed here will you enjoy your next visit in the beach.

I have always wanted to rent jet skis and take my family out but I’m nervous someone would get hurt! It looks like so much fun, I’ll just have to buck up and do it one of these days!

Love this list, especially the whale and dolphin ones! You’re missing my favourite activity which is scuba diving, you can do shore dives so I reckon it still counts as a beach activity!

Yes, it is really fun to do scuba diving. Will take note of this and add it on future edits. Thank You

Looks cool! Some of these I might just try!

Thank you for sharing a great idea!! I now have my own bucket list for the “must do” things on the beach!De

Your information is so good and fun to do!

I was amazed

Enjoy a tropical island daytrip to Peanut Island

Peanut Island , the 80-acre tropical island located at the west end of the Palm Beach (Lake Worth) Inlet, is a get-there-only-by-boat county park, where long strings of boats raft up while hundreds of people socialize in the shallow off-shore water. At its best, a visit to the island can feel like a brief Bahamian vacation as the Gulfstream flows in through the inlet to bathe the palm-fringed island in warm, crystalline water.

Dieppe is located on the coast of Normandy. Back in the day, it became France’s first seaside holiday resort when Duchess Berry introduced the seaside holiday trend to the country. Are there any beaches in Paris?

I know that many of you are asking “Are there beaches in Paris” and I completely understand the question. Paris is located by the Seine and having a beach along the river is just a logical conclusion. And the good news here is, there is a beach in Paris, but not exactly the sandy shores you might expect.

The beach in Paris is called “Paris Plage” and is a leisure park along the Seine and the Canals that are set up during the summer month and are a fabulous hang-out spot. While swimming in the Seine is not allowed, some sections of the Canal St.Martin are transformed into an outdoor pool.

#18 Paris Plage – the beach in Paris

To enjoy some relaxation at the beach, while sunbathing and swimming, you don’t really need to leave Paris.

Right in the heart of the French capital, on the banks of the Seine River and the Canal Saint Martin, there is the Paris Plage.

Paris Plage by the Seine

This artificial 4 km long beach is set up every summer from July to August to ease the summer days (and nights) of Parisian and tourists alike. To be fair, don’t expect sandy beaches and dipping, it is a more beachside promenade with armchairs, pop-up bars, and activities. But it is at the waterfront and you might even get a fresh breeze.

The list of leisure and sporty activities you can participate in while at Paris Plage is impressive. And when you are done having fun, you are already on the Seine banks, the perfect spot in Paris to enjoy a traditional picnic.

Wife of Gilgo Beach murders suspect says she's giving husband "benefit of the doubt"

By Jordan Freiman

March 13, 2024 / 7:59 PM EDT / CBS News

The wife of Rex Heuermann , the man suspected of killing four women around Gilgo Beach on Long Island in New York, issued a statement Wednesday saying she is giving her husband "the benefit of the doubt."

Asa Ellerup said in a statement through her attorneys that she sympathized with the victims and their families and that "nobody deserves to die in that manner."

"I will listen to all of the evidence and withhold judgment until the end of trial," she said. "I have given Rex the benefit of the doubt, as we all deserve."

Ellerup filed for divorce after her husband's arrest, but her attorneys noted that she visits Heuermann every week and believes he is "not capable of the crimes he is accused of."

US-NEWS-NY-SERIAL-KILLINGS-NY

Heuermann was charged in July of last year with the murders of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Costello. Then in January of this year, he was indicted in the killing of Maureen Brainard-Barnes .

The four women , dubbed the "Gilgo Four," were found in 2010 buried in close proximity to each other along Ocean Parkway near Gilgo Beach. All four were sex workers who had gone missing between 2007 and 2010.

Heuermann has pleaded not guilty to the charges.

Bob Macedonio, one of Ellerup's attorneys, told " 48 Hours " in September 2023 that Ellerup "had no idea any of this was going on. Nobody wants to think that they've been living with, sleeping next to a serial killer for the past 25 years."

Investigators say they have evidence Ellerup was out of town when the murders occurred, and she has not been charged or named as a suspect, "48 Hours" reported.

Ellerup appeared at one of Heuermann's court hearings back in November 2023.

Estranged wife of Gilgo Beach murders suspect says she has given him 'the benefit of the doubt'

The wife of an architect charged in a string of slayings known as the  Gilgo Beach serial killings released a statement late Wednesday in her husband’s defense, saying she didn’t believe him capable of the brutality of which he is accused.

The statement, released on Asa Ellerup’s behalf by her lawyers, is her first in months since her husband’s arrest in the now-infamous case last July. She has not been charged with any crimes, and investigators say she and her daughter were away on each of the four occasions when Rex Heuermann allegedly killed a woman.

Ellerup filed for divorce from Heuermann days after his arrest , but still visits him weekly, according to her attorneys.

“Nobody deserves to die in that manner,” the statement on Ellerup’s behalf said, with her lawyers sharing her “heartfelt sympathies” for the victims and their families. “I will listen to all of the evidence and withhold judgment until the end of trial. I have given Rex the benefit of the doubt, as we all deserve.”

It wasn’t immediately clear what prompted the statement from Ellerup on Wednesday.

Heuermann  was most recently charged in mid-January with a fourth slaying , that of Maureen Brainard-Barnes, a Connecticut mother of two who vanished in 2007 and whose remains were found more than three years later along a coastal highway on Long Island.

The charges came months after he was labeled the prime suspect in her death when he was arrested in July  in the deaths of three other women . He pleaded not guilty in Brainard-Barnes’ death, as he had done in the other cases.

Heuermann is being held without bail. He faces several life sentences without parole if convicted.

Heuermann has maintained his innocence from “day one” and looks forward to defending himself in court, attorney Mike Brown has said. Brown said he is still reviewing new information presented by prosecutors in court documents.

“They had little bits of evidence and focused on Rex Heuermann and then they accumulated more evidence and tried to fit that evidence to complete their narrative,” said Brown.

Rex A. Heuermann in Suffolk County Court in Central Islip, New York on Aug. 1, 2023.

Heuermann was arrested July 14, 2023 , in connection with the deaths of Melissa Barthelemy, Megan Waterman and Amber Lynn Costello, three women who authorities say were sex workers like Brainard-Barnes. The latter was the first to disappear.

Their remains were found along the same quarter-mile stretch of parkway in the Gilgo Beach area of Jones Beach Island in 2010. Additional searching turned up the remains of six more adults and a toddler who was the child of one of the victims.

Investigators have said Heuermann, who lived in Massapequa Park across the bay from where the bodies were found, was probably not responsible for all the deaths. Some of the victims disappeared in the mid-1990s.

28 Best Beaches on the East Coast — From Maine to Florida

These East Coast beaches have blue waters, soft sand, and fun activities for everyone.

visit to a beach

DenisTangneyJr/Getty Images

The East Coast of the U.S. is home to some seriously stunning landscapes, from rugged mountains to pastoral valleys. But no area showcases nature's artistry more than the region's gorgeous coastline.

The states bordering the eastern shore encompass nearly 30,000 miles of coastline,  according to the NOAA Office for Coastal Management . But with so many states to choose from, it may be hard to decide which beaches to visit, especially when you weigh all your options, from the rocky coves of Maine and the iconic boardwalks of the Jersey Shore to secluded Southern barrier islands.

Before we dig into our picks, though, let us start by saying there are plenty more beaches worthy of their day in the sun and your vacation time. So, by no means is this list ranked, exhaustive, or a slight to other local favorites. To keep things simple, we've compiled a list of two beaches per state. Here are 28 of the best beaches on the East Coast.

Sand Beach, Maine

KenCanning/Getty Images

Acadia National Park  is one of the most stunning places to explore in the spring, summer, and fall. After hiking through its seemingly endless trails, make your way to Sand Beach, a small stretch of shoreline accessible via Park Loop Road. The water will be cold, but the refreshing feeling is worth it, thanks to the solitude and stellar views.

Gooch's Beach, Maine

Those looking for more action can head to Gooch's Beach in Kennebunk. The soft-sand stretch is popular with surfers, thanks to a  clean break  that's usually best in the fall, though the waves have been known to pick up in the summer if a good storm is on the way. While there's no snack bar here, there are lifeguards, so families can feel more at ease.

Hampton Beach, New Hampshire

Walter Bibikow/Getty Images

For miles of sandy shore, head to  Hampton Beach State Park . Visitors here can camp, fish, picnic, and, of course, swim in the Atlantic waters. And because it's a state park, it comes with all the necessary facilities, including bathrooms, for a comfortable experience.

Weirs Beach, New Hampshire

Getty Images/iStock

Technically not a coastal beach, this beach is located on Lake Winnipesaukee, but it's just as glorious as a seaside escape along the Atlantic. Come for plenty of sand and calm waters that are perfect for small children. The beach also has a lively boardwalk and other happenings, including lake cruises, tons of dining options, and live music every once in a while.

Race Point Beach, Massachusetts

Denis Tangney Jr/Getty Images

Race Point Beach, located in Provincetown, comes with miles of silky sand. It's a prime place to get a summertime glow or sit with a cozy sweater to watch a fall sunrise or sunset. It even has a lighthouse up on the dunes (though you will have to hike about two miles to get there, according to the local Chamber of Commerce ).

Coast Guard Beach, Massachusetts

jaypetersen/Getty Images

For a gentler shoreline, head to Coast Guard Beach in Eastham, a popular spot for families — locals and visitors alike. Though it's just 25 miles from Race Point Beach, the waters here tend to be much calmer, plus it features facilities, including a bathroom and rinse-off showers, as well as lifeguards all summer long.

Easton's Beach, Rhode Island

Easton's Beach  in Newport is as idyllic as they come. The charming beach is also Newport's largest, making it easy to find a spot to lay down your blanket. In addition to amenities like a snack bar and bathrooms, it also has the bonus of a carousel and the Save the Bay Aquarium.

East Matunuck State Beach, Rhode Island

Steven Kornfeld/Getty Images

As the Ocean State, Rhode Island has its fair share of spectacular beaches, but none has as much charm as East Matunuck. Nestled at the far end of the state, East Matunuck State Beach is equipped with typical perks such as a snack bar, bathrooms, and summertime lifeguards keeping a watchful eye, as well as gorgeous dunes and a view of Block Island. Plus, it's down the street from the famed  Matunuck Oyster Bar , which is deserving of the short walk for a dozen oysters and a cocktail for lunch.

Compo Beach, Connecticut

KyleDunne/Getty Images

Westport has several beaches ideal for exploration, but  Compo is the standout. The 29-acre park includes a large sandy beach that looks out onto the Long Island Sound with a wheelchair-friendly boardwalk and a concession stand. For those looking to break a sweat and have a little fun, there are also two sand volleyball courts.

Harvey's Beach, Connecticut

iStock/Getty Images

Harvey's Beach in Old Saybrook is the stuff of small-town dreams. The sandy beach, lined with gorgeous dunes, is a place where visitors can swim, fish, boat, and hunt for shells. There's a concession stand, changing rooms, and a small playground for kids too.

Rockaway Beach, New York

Sascha Kilmer/Getty Images

For New Yorkers, Rockaway Beach in Queens is as convenient as it gets. It's accessible via public transit from Manhattan and is a stellar spot to escape the hustle and bustle for a quick swim or a paddle out to surf. (It's technically the only beach in New York City  where it's legal to surf .)

Cooper's Beach, New York

Discover Long Island

There's no bad beach in the Hamptons , but for a more local vibe, make your way to Cooper's Beach. It's a gorgeous little pocket of sand along the Atlantic that's near restaurants. Even better, it's known for being just a little quieter in the summer than more popular nearby locales.

The Cove, New Jersey

Richard T. Nowitz/Getty Images

The beaches along Cape May go on for some 2.5 miles, and the best part about them is that they're within walking distance of many local accommodations and all the top attractions (a.k.a. those famous Victorian homes). But Cape May isn't just one beach; it's made up of many. One of the best is The Cove, ideal for everyone from families to solo surfers, kayakers, and those seeking a break from the more active beach scene down the shore.

Sandy Hook, New Jersey

Further north, beachgoers should make their way to Sandy Hook. The expansive stretch is, once again, perfect for swimming, fishing, or paddling. The beach is also part of the larger  Gateway National Recreation Area,  which has miles of hiking and biking trails for when you've had enough of the sand.

Bethany Beach, Delaware

Tetra Images/Getty Images

Picturesque Bethany Beach is covered with grassy dunes sprouting up around the wooden boardwalk that goes on for a half mile. Come here for a stroll or sit and savor the sun for as long as you can before checking out the nearby shops and food vendors.

Cape Henlopen State Park, Delaware

Cape Henlopen State Park , which can be found at the mouth of the Delaware Bay, features more than six miles of pristine coastline, including the Point, the exact spot where the bay meets the Atlantic Ocean. After spending some time at the beach, head to the Seaside Nature Center to learn more about the area's flora and fauna.

Ocean City, Maryland

abriggs21/Getty Images

Looking for a really, really big beach? Then, it's time to plan a trip to Ocean City, home to 10 miles of sand. The beach here is ideal for everything you'd ever want to do by the shore: surf, kayak, build sandcastles, play volleyball, and more. Ocean City also prides itself on its plentiful free activities in the summer, including movie nights and concerts.

Assateague Island, Maryland

Michael Rickard/Getty Images

Yes, there are two miles of beaches you can relax on at Assateague Island. But rather than park yourself in one spot for an entire day, stop in, get some sun, then go off and explore this fantastic island . Hike, see the lighthouse, and, if you're lucky, spot one of the famed wild horses running down the shore (just don't touch or feed them for your own safety).

Virginia Beach, Virginia

Virginia Beach is a lively slice of land where the Chesapeake Bay and Atlantic Ocean meet. The destination is known for its buzzing boardwalk, plentiful events, and a standout dining scene steps from the sand, making it easy to go back and forth between the water and good eating all day long.

Buckroe Beach, Virginia

Further north from Virginia Beach, you will find  Buckroe Beach , a smaller stretch of sand that feels scaled back compared to its more bustling counterpart. At Buckroe, visitors can head out for a swim, walk the pier, and take the kids to the nautical-themed playground for a laid-back yet equally pleasurable day at the beach.

Nags Head, North Carolina

catnap72/Getty Images

What would a list of great Eastern Seaboard beaches be without mention of the Outer Banks? For the ultimate in solitude, head to Nags Head and its 12 miles of sandy shoreline. There are plenty of public access points — all you need to do is find a patch that's ideal for you and set up shop. Just make sure to pack enough water and snacks to last the day. If you really want to unplug, consider camping in the Outer Banks — at the Oregon Inlet Campground, you can fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

Emerald Isle, North Carolina

Kyle Little/Getty Images

If you like the island life, make your way to Emerald Isle, which has fewer than 4,000 permanent residents, but swells in population during the busy summer season. The 1,000-foot-long Bogue Inlet Pier offers a chance to fish for mullet, king mackerel, and more while seeing the beach from a whole new perspective.

Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

John Coletti/Getty Images

Located along South Carolina's  Grand Strand  coast sits Myrtle Beach, one of the most popular beach destinations in the state . Made up of several connected beaches, the sand here goes on for miles. It's ideal for families, friends, and all who want to soak in the rays together. Plus, its proximity to nearby restaurants, accommodations, and attractions makes it easy to pop in or stay for days.

Burkes Beach, South Carolina

North Carolina isn't the only state with island paradise beaches. Just look to Burkes Beach in the ever-popular Hilton Head Island for proof.  Burkes Beach  is often considered the more local of the island's beaches, meaning it's both a bit more relaxed and comes with fewer restaurants nearby. That said, the trade-off of peace and quiet just might be worth having to pack a sandwich along with your other essentials .

Driftwood Beach, Georgia

sestevens/Getty Images

Find a little peace and a whole lot of picture-perfect views at  Driftwood Beach on Jekyll Island. With beautiful sand, sea, and massive driftwood washed ashore, it's one of the best Georgia beaches for photographers.

North Beach, Georgia

North Beach on Tybee Island is made for those who enjoy long walks on the sand and hunting down the perfect seashells. It's a beachcomber's paradise and one that's easy to hop on and off between town shopping and dining excursions. Book a bed-and-breakfast for a charming stay.

Vero Beach, Florida

Jeff Greenberg/Getty Images

If you're seeking something a bit more low-key, head to Vero Beach, a peaceful area that's home to several beaches worth exploring. Want to bring home a little souvenir? Try treasure hunting at Seagrape Trail Beach. Want photos of sand dunes? Go to Treasure Shores Park. Want to surf? Try Wabasso Beach. See all of Vero Beach's  smaller shoreline stops here .

South Beach, Florida

The iconic South Beach has made its way into movies, music videos, and television series because it really is that vibrant, eclectic, and downright stunning — thanks to its azure waters lapping the white sand. During your visit to one of the most happening beaches in America, you may want to splurge on a chaise lounger at a beach club for the day.

Best alabama beaches.

Characterized by the warm waters of the Gulf and sugar-white sands, Alabama's beaches and adjacent small towns are a treat for vacationers on the hunt for a laid-back, family-friendly getaway. To help you determine which stretches of shoreline are worth visiting, U.S. News considered scenic beauty, available amenities and the opinions of experts and travelers to decide the best Alabama beaches. Have a favorite? Vote below to have a say in next year's list.

Gulf Shores

Dauphin island, orange beach, robinson island, gulf state park, fort morgan, point clear.

visit to a beach

Home to 32 miles of white sand beaches, Gulf Shores is one of Alabama's most popular coastal getaways thanks to the Gulf of Mexico's balmy waters. There are a variety of beach access points, but the one at Gulf Place is particularly popular thanks to its ample facilities, which include picnic pavilions, volleyball nets and restrooms. Off of the sand, there are plenty of activities to entertain the whole family, including the Alabama Gulf Coast Zoo, the USS Alabama Battleship Memorial Park (50 miles northwest) and Waterville USA – a 20-acre water park. While in town, indulge in plenty of fresh seafood, especially oysters – the area's specialty.

visit to a beach

Dubbed the "Sunset Capital of Alabama," 14-mile-long Dauphin Island sits at the southernmost point of the state. For some of the best views of the Gulf, head to East End Beach. Or, spend the day shelling at West End Beach. Along with its pristine beaches, Dauphin Island is home to a variety of family-friendly attractions, including historic Fort Gaines, the Dauphin Island Sea Lab and the Audubon Bird Sanctuary. You'll fall in love with the small-town feel here while browsing the boutique shops or chowing down on locally caught seafood at the island's laid-back restaurants.

visit to a beach

This stretch of Alabama coastline beckons to beachgoers with its alabaster sands and ample outdoor pursuits. Alabama Point East Beach is popular amongst travelers for its beautiful blue-green water, sand dunes and picnic areas. You could easily spend all day lounging on the beach, but if you start to get restless, arrange a tee time at one of the area's golf courses, rent a bike or kayak in Wolf Bay. Meanwhile, families will find plenty to enjoy at Adventure Island, which boasts an arcade and a variety of kid-friendly rides. In the evening, head to The Wharf or Flora-Bama Lounge for live entertainment.

visit to a beach

A popular daytrip option for boaters in the Orange Beach area, Robinson Island is a bird sanctuary and an important nesting area for wading herons and terns. You can only reach the island by kayak, stand-up paddleboard or boat, and once you've arrived there isn't much to do beyond lounging on the beach and enjoying the undeveloped land – but that serenity is exactly what makes it so popular with visitors. Since there are no facilities or amenities on the island, you'll have to bring everything you need and take it with you when you leave.

visit to a beach

Gulf State Park is home to nine ecosystems, 2 miles of beaches and plenty of paddling and swimming opportunities in 900-acre Lake Shelby. Stretch your legs along the Hugh S. Branyon Backcountry Trail, a 28-mile trail system featuring prime wildlife spotting, including birds, coyote, whitetail deer and alligators. There are cabins, cottages and campsites for budget-minded travelers, but those who don't want to rough it should book a room at the Hilton-affiliated Lodge at Gulf State Park. Meanwhile, relaxation-minded travelers should set up camp for the day at the Beach Pavilion or Cotton Bayou Beach, which both offer showers, parking and restrooms.

visit to a beach

Sitting roughly 20 miles west of Gulf Shores, Fort Morgan is a National Historic Landmark that dates back to 1834, when it was built to protect Mobile Bay. Though the site may initially only appeal to history buffs, Fort Morgan should also be on the to-do list for beach bums and bird-watchers. Designated a Globally Important Bird Area by the American Bird Conservancy, the fort and its uncrowded beaches are an important stopover for spring and fall neotropical migrating birds. For a more traditional beach experience, travelers can head to nearby West Beach, which is backed by eateries, private homes and high-rise hotels.

visit to a beach

This small town overlooking Alabama's Mobile Bay is a quiet alternative to the state's crowded Gulf-facing beaches. A boardwalk stretches along the coast, giving travelers fantastic views of Point Clear's Historic District. For the best experience, book a room at Marriott's bayside Grand Hotel Golf Resort & Spa , which boasts its own private beach with cabana rentals. This beautiful property is dotted with live oak trees and is home to hundreds of bird species.

visit to a beach

Better known for its cafes, art galleries, souvenir stores and seafood restaurants than its beach, Fairhope draws vacationers who are on the hunt for a heavy dose of Southern charm. Unwind on North Beach Park's laid-back stretch of sand, or take advantage of the park's other offerings, which include a duck pond and several walking trails. When you're not admiring Mobile Bay from the 1,448-foot-long pier – located directly next to the beach – immerse yourself in the town's art scene by paying a visit to the Eastern Shore Art Center. Time your visit for March when the free Fairhope Arts and Crafts Festival takes over the town.
