Top Places to visit in Rodrigues

I traveled to Rodrigues for the first time when I was about 12 years old and never thought about going back until recently. I’ve always heard that it was too small and that there wasn’t much to do there.

After doing a bit of research, I found out that there are actually a lot of places to visit and things to do in Rodrigues Island . So, here’s a list of 20 best places to visit in Rodrigues!

Looking for a place to stay in Rodrigues Island ? Here are my recommendations:

  • Luxury: Tekoma Boutik Hotel
  • Mid-range: Gite Patriko
  • Budget: Auberge St Francois

Trou D’Argent

One of the most beautiful places to visit in Rodrigues is, without a doubt, Trou D’Argent. This pristine white sand beach is flanked by tall jagged cliffs and is only accessible on foot by hiking from St Francois or Gravier beach.

As you get to the far right side of St Francois beach, you’ll need to climb over the rocky outcrop and follow the purple and white markings on the stones and trees.

After a few minutes, you’ll reach Baie de L’Est. Although similar to Trou D’Argent, the beach is less beautiful and not swimmable due to the huge amount of stones.

Hiking to Baie de L'Est beach is one of the best things to do in Rodrigues island

From there, you’ll be walking along a path canopied by tall pine trees until you reach a set of wooden stairs. Keep walking until you reach another beach with wooden railings along the top edge. This one is called Anse Philibert and is sometimes mistaken for Trou D’Argent.

Anse Philibert in Rodrigues Island

After a further 5-10 minutes’ walk, you’ll finally reach Trou D’Argent. If you keep going, you’ll find two other beaches – Grande Anse and Anse Bouteille.  In total, it takes about 3-4 hours to visit all the beaches but you could easily spend the whole day there.

Hiking to Trou D’Argent is definitely one of the best things to do in Rodrigues, so make sure to not miss it during your trip!

Grande Anse beach flanked by rocky outcrops

Mont Limon Viewpoint

Standing at 398 meters above sea level, Mont Limon viewpoint offers a 360-degree view of the whole island and is one of the most popular places to visit in Rodrigues. Due to the hilly landscape of Rodrigues, it literally takes less than 5 minutes to reach the summit!

If you’re coming from St Francois, you’ll find a staircase along a curve on your left. There’s no parking lot but you can leave your car on the other side of the road. The path is well-marked and easy to follow thanks to the orange and purple markings.

Most people only visit the main viewpoint but once you get to the summit, take the path on your right and you’ll find other scenic lookout points.

François Leguat Reserve

The island of Rodrigues used to have an abundance of giant tortoises but unfortunately, they were hunted down by human settlers which eventually led to their extinction in the 1700s.

The François Leguat Reserve has worked a lot to reintroduce several species of tortoises such as the Radiated, Aldabra, and Ploughshare tortoises. They also planted over 300,000 plants in order to recreate the fauna and flora of Rodrigues as described by the French explorer and naturalist, François Leguat.

Located in Anse Quitor, François Leguat Reserve offers guided tours every day at 9.30 a.m, 10.30 a.m, 1.30 p.m, and 2.30 pm.

Turtle at Francois Leguat Reserve Rodrigues

During the visit, you’ll get to see different species of endemic plants, walk with tortoises, and even take a selfie with them! You’ll then visit the “Grande Caverne” where your guide will point out the weirdly shaped stalactites and stalagmites. The cave is well-equipped with lights, handrails, and walkways.

Towards the end of the cave tour, you’ll also get to see the spot where the bones of the extinct Solitaire bird were dug.

As one of the best places to visit in Rodrigues, you’ll also find a museum, restaurant, and souvenir shop onsite.

Grande Caverne (cave) at Francois Leguat

Caverne Patate

With 37 cave systems scattered around Rodrigues, only two of them can be visited – Grande Caverne and Caverne Patate. The latter is located in the village of Petite Butte and is the most popular cave in Rodrigues. You can only explore the cave if you’re accompanied by a guide and the last visit is at 3 p.m.

Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to visit it during my recent trip but I heard that it’s quite similar to Grande Caverne at François Leguat Reserve. The only difference is that it isn’t equipped with lights and handrails.

Montagne Malgache (Zipline with Tyrodrig)

In recent years, ziplining has become one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rodrigues. One particular place in Rodrigues where you can partake in this activity is Montagne Malgache through a company called RodrigAdventure (commonly known as Tyrodrig).

Spectacular views over the southeast coast coupled with a rush of adrenaline make ziplining one of the best things to do in Rodrigues Island!

Man ziplining at Montagne Malgache in Rodrigues with Tyrodrig

It might seem daunting at first but as soon as you cruise across the mountain, every ounce of fear will melt away as you take in the view! You’ll first start with the longest zipline which is about 400 meters long followed by two shorter ones at 180 and 110 meters respectively.

For the adrenaline junkies out there, you can also include other activities such as walking along a suspension bridge (at Cascade Pistache), bungee jumping (at Cascade Pistache) and Via Ferrata (at Montagne Tonnerre) to your list of things to do in Rodrigues.

Cost per activity : Rs 1,200 (US$ 26.85) for tourists and Rs 800 (US$ 17.90) for Mauritians, except for the suspension bridge which costs Rs 100 (US$ 2.50).

Ile aux Cocos

Located about 4 km west of Rodrigues, Ile aux Cocos is an islet home to several species of seabirds including the lesser noddy, noddy, sooty tern, and fairy tern.

The islet is gorgeous with soft white sand and clear water and is a haven for both bird watchers and travelers looking for a piece of paradise.

Since Ile aux Cocos was declared a nature reserve in 1986, the authorities control the number of people visiting at a time. This means that you won’t have to fight with hundreds of tourists for a strip of sand!

Do note that it’s strictly forbidden to touch the eggs or hatchlings and you’re only allowed a maximum of 4 hours on the island so as to not disturb the birds’ natural habitat.

Tours usually depart from Pointe du Diable and the boat trip lasts about 1 hour. Depending on the tour company, a visit to Ile aux Cocos will cost between Rs 950 and 1,500 (US$ 23.75-37.50) and includes the boat trip, lunch, and guided visit of the island.

I visited Ile aux Cocos with 360 Degrees Tours which cost Rs 1,200 (US$ 30) but Echo Link offers a cheaper and similar tour for about Rs 950 (US$ 23.75).

Ile aux Sables

Ile aux Sables is another islet located beside Ile aux Cocos and is also a nature reserve. Unfortunately, tourists are not allowed to visit but during your tour of Ile aux Cocos, the boat will stop briefly near the islet and you can spend some time walking along the sandbar only.

Grande Montagne Nature Reserve

For those who seek a complete immersion in nature with one of the best vantage points in Rodrigues, a visit to Grande Montagne Nature Reserve shouldn’t be missed.

After years of restoration work by both the Mauritian Wildlife Foundation and local citizens, Grande Montagne Nature Reserve was finally opened to the public in 2016.

It’s no doubt one of the most beautiful places to visit in Rodrigues! Spanning 20 hectares, the nature reserve is home to several endemic plants and birds. One section also serves as a little tortoise park where you’ll get to see five tortoises roaming about freely.

You can only visit as part of a guided tour, which is absolutely worth it by the way.  Tours are conducted at 9.30 a.m and 1.15 p.m from Monday to Friday and at 9.30 a.m on Saturday.

The visit lasts about two hours and your guide will teach you all about the fauna and flora of Rodrigues. I even got the chance to spot two endemic birds, the Rodrigues Fody and Warbler, several times during my visit!

Grande Montagne Nature Reserve viewpoint of forests and turquoise ocean

But the highlight was definitely the viewpoint at about ¾ of the trail where you’ll get one of the best panoramic views of the southeast coast.

At the end of your visit, you can spend some time at the education center to view a display of the Solitaire bird and giant tortoise skeletons.

Cost : Rs 300 (US$ 7.50) for tourists; Rs 150 (US$3.75) for Mauritians; Rs 50 (US$ 1.25) for locals (children pay half price)

Petite Butte

Petite Butte is a small rugged beach located in the southwest of Rodrigues Island, not too far from Caverne Patate. If you’re looking for a beach without any crowd at all, this is the place for you!

There isn’t a whole lot to do here apart from walking along the beach to explore the surroundings.

Tip : It’s best to wear closed-toe shoes when walking on the beach due to the sharp corals.

Port Mathurin Market

Port Mathurin Market is definitely one of the most popular places to visit in Rodrigues Island. The market is most lively on Saturdays and attracts locals and tourists looking for deals on a wide selection of fresh produce, souvenirs, local handicrafts, and food.

If you want to buy fruits and vegetables, it’s best to go early as almost everything will be gone by 10 a.m.

Fresh produce on display at Port Mathurin Market

The tourist/craft market, on the other hand, stays open until 1-2 p.m. This is the most visited part of the market where you can buy all sorts of local products including dried octopus and fish, pickles, chili sauce, “tourtes” (a Rodriguan pie filled with papaya, pineapple, and coconut), rattan baskets, handbags, etc.

The market is located beside the bus terminal and can be accessed directly through a pedestrian bridge. If you’re coming by car, you’ll find a big parking lot behind the market.

Pointe Canon Viewpoint (Mary, Queen of Rodrigues Monument)

Pointe Canon is located in Port Mathurin and was used as a watch area during British ruling. Nowadays, it serves as both a panoramic viewpoint and a religious site.

In the early 1950s, money was raised to buy a statue of the Virgin Mary from England to create a monument similar to Marie Reine de la Paix in Mauritius. The statue was then inaugurated in 1954.

Statue of Virgin Mary at Pointe Canon in Rodrigues

In addition to being a place of worship for Catholics, it’s one of the best viewpoints in Port Mathurin. It offers a panoramic view of the whole capital – the market, bus terminal, harbor and neighboring villages.

You can get there by walking from the bus terminal but this would require walking over hundreds of steps. If you’re coming by car, you can stop at the little parking area next to the hairpin bend beside Pointe Canon Meteorological Station.

St Francois Beach

Arguably one of the best beaches in Rodrigues, and also the longest, St Francois Beach is located off the east coast of Rodrigues Island.

Stretching over 700 meters of soft white sand and peaceful waters, the beach is empty most of the time and visited only by a handful of people mainly on Sundays.

St Francois beach is also one of the main starting points for hiking to Trou D’Argent.

With a couple of restaurants serving delicious local dishes, a few budget guesthouses, and a 4-star resort close by, St Francois is the ultimate beach destination in Rodrigues!

Pointe Cotton Beach

By far the most popular beach in Rodrigues, Pointe Cotton is also located on the east coast. There are a few restaurants along the main road and the left side of the beach is home to Cotton Bay Resort & Spa .

While it’s one of the most visited beaches, it’s not my favorite due to the huge amount of sharp corals in the water. So, I recommend wearing water shoes for a more enjoyable swim.

You can also take a walk along the right side of the beach to explore the large coral outcrop. The landscape there is completely different with strong wind and huge waves crashing against the cliffs. It’s definitely a must-see when visiting Rodrigues Island!

Rodrigues 52 Contours

If you’re looking for the best viewpoints in Rodrigues, driving along the “52 contours” route will reward you with some of the most scenic views. This road is made up of 52 adrenaline-inducing hairpin bends that connect Mont Lubin to Port Sud-Est.

Luckily the road is well-paved and deserted most of the time, so driving along should be somewhat easy…

Here you’ll find colorful houses clinging to the hills, little islets dotting the turquoise ocean, and cattle and sheep roaming about freely and occasionally crossing the road. The landscape is truly beautiful!

About halfway through, you’ll find a big stone monument on your left. You can pull over here to take some photos and enjoy a bird’s eye view of Anse Mourouk, Hermitage Island, Ile aux Chats (Pierrot Island), and Ile Gombrani.

Cathedral St Gabriel

Another great place to visit in Rodrigues is Cathedral St Gabriel. The stone church was built in the 1930s by a group of volunteers and is the biggest Catholic church on the island.

Roche Bon Dieu Viewpoint

Although this attraction in Rodrigues is unknown to most tourists, this doesn’t mean that it isn’t worth visiting. Located in the village of Roche Bon Dieu, the viewpoint offers a panoramic view of small colorful houses dotting the hills with a beautiful ocean backdrop.

But what makes this spot particularly famous are the two huge boulders. While local legend says that the boulders were dropped here by God, others argue that they come from a meteorite.

If you’re coming from St Francois, drive towards the village of Roche Bon Dieu until you see a bus station. The viewpoint is located down a little track road on your left, beside the bus station (click here for the approximate GPS pin location).

Flanked by a pine forest on one side and calm clear waters on the other, Anse Ally is located at the foot of Tekoma Boutique Hotel , on the east coast of Rodrigues.

The remote feeling is emphasized by the vast expanse of white sand that stretches all the way to Fumier beach.

It’s a great place to visit in Rodrigues for a peaceful morning stroll. There are no restaurants nearby, but only a local vendor selling some snacks at the entrance. Settle on the benches to enjoy the scenery, take a stroll along the beach or go in for a swim.

Anse Mourouk

Another place to visit in Rodrigues is the white sand beach of Anse Mourouk, located in Mourouk village.

The ocean is mostly shallow and flat making it one of the best kitesurfing spots on the island. This is also where the Rodrigues International Kite Surf Festival is held annually.

Anse aux Anglais

Anse aux Anglais is a small beach located about a 15-minute walk from Port Mathurin. Despite not being one of the best beaches in Rodrigues for swimming, it’s the perfect place to visit during sunset. You can also find a few restaurants in the area.

Jardins des Cinq Sens

Jardins des Cinq Sens is a small botanical garden that provides interactive tours using all five senses. During your visit, you’ll discover several endemic plants, flowers, aromatic and medicinal plants by using all your senses and then finish off with a free tasting.

Tours are conducted daily at 9 a.m, 10 a.m, 11 a.m, 1 p.m, 2 p.m and 3 p.m.

Cost : Rs 250 (US$ 6.25) for adults and Rs 125 (US$ 3.10) for children

Where to Stay in Rodrigues Island?

Tekoma boutik hotel – luxury.

Tekoma Boutik Hotel  is set on top of a cliff overlooking a beautiful white-sand beach on the east coast of Rodrigues Island. Each bungalow is equipped with a mix of modern and rustic furniture, a spacious bathroom, and an outdoor bathtub. The location is very peaceful and quiet and the large bay windows and private balcony offer a breathtaking view of the turquoise lagoon.

Gite Patriko – Mid-Range

Gite Patriko  is located within walking distance of the beach. The sea view villa can accommodate up to 13 people while the studio can accommodate up to 3 people. Both are very spacious and have a full kitchen and balcony overlooking the sea.

Auberge St Francois – Budget

Auberge St Francois is a budget guesthouse located right across St Francois Beach. Some rooms can accommodate up to 6 people and are equipped with a private bathroom, kettle, and mini-fridge. Cheaper rooms have a fan while others have air-conditioning and a private balcony.

The location is ideal if you’re planning on hiking to Trou D’Argent (about 30-45 minutes’ walk) plus you can walk to the beach in less than 1 minute! There are only two restaurants nearby but you can order breakfast, lunch, and dinner at the guesthouse.

How to get to Rodrigues Island?

If you’re on a budget, you can travel to Rodrigues by sea. The journey is quite long though, taking between 36 and 48 hours. You can check this website for more information.

Traveling by air is slightly more expensive but it takes only about 1.5 hours to get from Mauritius to Rodrigues. Air Mauritius is the only airline that offers flights from Mauritius to Rodrigues Island several times per week.

You can also travel to Rodrigues from Reunion Island with Air Austral.

How to get around Rodrigues Island?

The cheapest way to get around Rodrigues is by taking the bus. Bus tickets cost between Rs 12 (US$ 0.30) and Rs 30 (US$ 0.75) depending on the distance. Unfortunately, they are notorious for being slow and unreliable, especially on Sundays. If you’re only traveling short distances, I highly recommend walking instead.

If you’re traveling to Rodrigues for the first time and want the freedom to explore at your own pace, renting a car is the way to go. I rented a car through Echo Link and paid Rs 1,000 (US$ 25) per day and used only about Rs 400 (US$ 10) worth of gas for 2 days.

Best time to visit Rodrigues Island

The weather in Rodrigues is similar to that of Mauritius with only two seasons – summer (November to April) and winter (May to October). The average temperature is about 27-31 degrees Celsius in summer and 18-25 degrees Celsius in winter.

You can visit Rodrigues at any time of the year although you might want to steer clear of the cyclone season which is mainly between December and March. So, make sure to check the weather forecast before visiting.

When I visited Rodrigues in October, I found it to be slightly hotter than Mauritius. The weather was great for the most part of my trip and it only rained on one day and luckily, it didn’t last too long.

I’ll be visiting Rodrigues later this year and I’ve found your guide really helpful – thank you! I don’t suppose you came across any info about diving on the island? I’m a keen SCUBA diver but details about dive centres seem really hard to find online. I’m really looking forward to visiting and thank you again!

Hi Anne! Thank you, I’m really glad you found the guide helpful 🙂 I’m not a diver myself so I don’t have any personal recommendations. I think there’s only a couple of diving centers in Rodrigues though. You can read their Google reviews to get an idea of which one is the best.

Rodrigues

Rodrigues, considered as the little sister of the Mascarenes Islands, is located some 580 kilometres northeast of Mauritius. Small in size, with an area of only 108 square kilometres, the “Cinderella of the Mascarenes” has however a lot to offer! A beautiful unspoilt nature, a vast lagoon for water sports and fishing, a delicious and creative cuisine, and an incredibly welcoming local population. You will inevitably fall under the charm of this island which lives at another pace.

Rodrigues is very popular among land and water sports enthusiasts. It is an ideal playground for walkers and trailers with a hilly terrain that offers a splendid view from wherever you are and a return to nature. The East coast also features exceptional hikes with several coves along this coast, just enjoy the peace and unspoilt nature. The François Leguat Reserve , a reserve for Aldabra giant tortoises is also worth seeing. You will walk among these amazing creatures, reintroduced into the island after their extinction during the colonial era, in a stunning setting. You can visit the caves and the Garden of the Senses on the site.

Rodrigues is famous for its kitesurfing spots in the south-east, an international competition is held there every year, towards the end of June. Line fishing in traditional boats is also an experience to live. One of the fishermen of the island will be happy to take you on board for a roam in the lagoon. There are also local operators who offer fishing outings inside and outside the lagoon, diving sessions and visits of the islands around Rodrigues.

Rodrigues is a vibrant island with a culture of its own. The Sega Tambour , the traditional dance from Rodrigues, is now a UNESCO World Heritage; you definitely have to learn a few steps during your stay, it won’t be that easy though! Its cuisine is not only delectable, it is made with the heart; Sausage rougaille, «ourite» salad (octopus), red beans soup, papaya pie, pork curry and Kono-kono salad, are among the specialties of the island’s gastronomy. Its honey is also renowned, many locals produce their own backyard honey, and it is of very good quality.

When planning your trip to Mauritius, why not book 5-7 days to explore Rodrigues. The flight journey between the two islands lasts only an hour and a half. You will undoubtedly be conquered by your stay in Rodrigues.

Blissfully isolated more than 600km northeast of the mainland, this tiny volcanic outcrop surrounded by a massive turquoise lagoon is a stunning mountainous gem that barely feels connected to its big sister, Mauritius, let alone the wider world.

Constance Tekoma

Hotel in Rodrigues Island

With an outdoor pool, Constance Tekoma offers rooms in Rodrigues, just in front of Pointe Coton beach. A spa and wellness center is available on site. It was a beautiful stay. We had a beachfront room with a magnificent view. Going to bed and waking up to the sound of the waves was pure bliss. The staff were very warm and welcoming. We had a nice massage and breakfast and dinner was also very nice. We wanted a few days of relaxation and we got it. Thank you, Tekoma!

Le Marin, Rodrigues Island

Located in Rodrigues Island, 1.6 miles from Anse Philibert Beach, Le Marin, Rodrigues Island provides accommodations with a garden, free private parking, a terrace and a restaurant. We had an amazing stay at Le Marin, the view on the sea is just breathtaking, it is just a few minutes from the best beach of Rodrigues. The rooms have a perfect size and beds (twin room) are comfy, very clean. The hotel is still doing the finishes to part of the construction but it did not at all bother us as it is on the other side, no noise . The restaurant offered really delicious local meals and was careful to my food allergies, grateful to the kindness of the staff for making our stay memorable despite the cyclone nearby. The infinity edge pool was sparkling and wonderful. We have been to Rodrigues several times we have been really happy here. Thank you !

C Rodrigues Mourouk

Located in Rodrigues Island, 1.1 miles from Gravier Beach, C Rodrigues Mourouk provides accommodations with an outdoor swimming pool, free private parking, a garden and a terrace. Excellent customer service friendly welcoming staff

Bon Vivant Front de Mer - Ile Rodrigues

Merlin Guest House is a property set in Saint Francois. Some rooms feature a kitchen and a private bathroom. Free WiFi is available and on-site parking is provided. Emilien was so accomodating and kind! We are vegetarians and he prepared meals just for us. He also organized day trips for everyone. Emilien also creates an environment where everyone talks and laughs together. Plus the location cant be beaten. Youre just minutes from the trou d'argente. It is really a special place.

Couldn’t have been better. The host was very accommodating, helpful and very quick to respond to any questions. He is also flexible with check-in and check-out times, which was extremely helpful. We found a stray dog and he accepted to let us keep the dog for the night and found a foster home the following day for her.Yeah the host is incredible! The space was clean and had all of the necessities for a few night stay. In a great location, calm, surrounded by nature and not to mention the breathtaking view that you can enjoy everyday. This is definitely the perfect place to stay in rodrigues. Would definitely stay here again!

Featuring a garden, Chez Tonio features accommodations in Rodrigues Island. This property offers access to a balcony, free private parking, and free Wifi. An amazing view you feel like home really a great place to stay

Blue room Ocean view

Blue room Ocean view is located in Rodrigues Island, just a 10-minute walk from Grand Bay Beach and 11 miles from Francois Leguat Reserve. It’s tremendously exciting for world travelers to find somewhere very special like Rodrigues Island, 600 km east of Mauritius. Even more intriguing is what the accommodation will be like so far from the populated world. The pick-up from the little airport was faultless despite a common Air Mauritius delay and we were greeted at the Blue Room by John who showed us around and settled us in. The accommodation is simple and entirely unpretentious where everything works, including (now wait for it) wifi that yields, another ‘wait for it’, 320 Mbps! Plenty of water for the shower, hot and cold, with uninterrupted power supply. John can make available a car, a robust 4x4, at rates that, as I told him, are far below market rates. The Blue Room overlooks the somewhat distant Indian ocean that is a short drive away in Anse aux Anglais, down the hill. Restaurant-wise, there’s not a hell of a lot going on in Rodrigues but the local village down the hill offers some animation in the way of two okay eateries and a little grocery store. It’s pretty too. So, it’s a great place to stay (without AC but good fans) and highly recommended indeed. Bravo John!

Rodrigues is a beautiful island with good....

Rodrigues is a beautiful island with good snorkeling/diving and great scenery. As South Africans we did not find it cheap. It was our experience that it is not geared for English speaking tourists yet. Menus, direction, welcoming letters etc are in Kreole or French. We had difficulty ordering from menus and the description by waiters were no help at all as their English is hardly understandable. All and all it was still a worthwhile holiday.

Rodrigues Island: Getting off the beaten track in Mauritius

by Kathryn Burrington | Rodrigues Island

Crystal clear waters of the lagoon encircling Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean

As we come into land I can see white horses crashing against the coral reef encompassing a small cluster of islands. Outside the reef the sea is deep blue, inside, in striking contrast, pastel shades of green and turquoise shimmer in the shallow lagoon surrounding both Rodrigues Island and 18 smaller, uninhabited isles. It is here that I discover the road less travelled in Mauritius. Measuring just 11 miles long and 5 miles wide, don’t be fooled by its diminutive size, there are plenty of things to do in Rodrigues Island, a little-known gem sparkling in the Indian Ocean.

Top 10 things to do in Rodrigues Island, Indian Ocean - off the beaten track Mauritus

We’re soon above the island itself. Volcanic in origin, the landscape below me is lush and green thanks to the recent rains that typically fall each January and February. One minute the sun is shining, then there’s a sudden downpour, but it’s never long before the sun is out again. Rainbows abound on Rodrigues.

Named after the Portuguese explorer Diogo Rodrigues, this is the smallest and most remote of the Mascarene Islands that lie east of Madagascar. While everyone has heard of Reunion Island and Mauritius, few have heard of Rodrigues. Some 350 miles beyond Mauritius I am now at Africa’s most easterly point. Although self-governing it is part of the Republic of Mauritius. Having recently got back from a wonderful week there I’m pulled between hoping it stays just as it is, an unspoilt secret island with just a smattering of tourism, and a longing to shout about it from the rooftops. Many people say there’s little to do here and you only need to spend a day or two on the island. They couldn’t be more wrong. One week was not long enough.

Top 10 things to do in Rodrigues Island

1. visit the saturday market.

Pineapples, melons and bright, pink piles of dragonfruit. Pots of honey, home preserves and fiery chutneys. Piles of hats in a rainbow of colours. People laughing and gossiping – the Saturday market in Port Mathurin is as hectic as it gets on Ile Rodrigues – a kaleidoscope of colours in the sunshine. There’s a market on most mornings but it’s on Saturday that it really comes alive, although compared to many other markets I’ve been to it’s still a relatively leisurely affair. It’s a great place to photograph and everyone is extremely friendly. I just wish my French was better. Creole, French and English are all official languages of the island, however, French is much more widely spoken than English.

2.      Hike to Trou d’Argent Beach

A fabulous network of walking trails criss-crosses the island, leading you through the beautiful countryside. We took the trail from the southern end of Saint Francois beach that leads through the wooded hillside to a series of hidden coves, known locally as crics, including Trou d’Argent Beach . If you want to go swimming, time your visit with high tide as the coral reef is very close to these beaches, making it difficult to swim here when the tide is out. You’ll need to bring your own supplies including water, as there are no facilities. While much of the walk is shaded by small pine trees, I’d also recommend using plenty of sunblock.

3.      Thrill seek

Rodrigues may seem a sleepy laid-back oasis trapped in time, yet there is another side to the island that is being developed for adrenaline junkies. As well as a great range of watersports that make the most of the regularly windy days, such as wind and kite surfing, two further attractions are on offer for adventure addicts, including one of the highest ziplines in the world and a pendulum swing from a suspended bridge just two planks wide. Sadly, or possibly luckily, it was closed on the day we visited. Having seen it I’m not quite so keen to give it a try. Would you?

O|n the other hand, I really wanted to do the zipline (it is even higher than the one I did over the biodomes at the Eden Project in Cornwall ) but there simply wasn’t time to do everything we wanted to do.

4. Watch the sunrise

On the first two mornings of my visit, with my internal body clock still all askew, I awoke early and walked the few minutes from my accommodation at Pirate Lodges to the beautiful sandy beach of Saint François Bay, to watch the sunrise. On another day I was lucky enough to catch the sunset from another part of the island. Was it my imagination or were the sunrises and sunsets particularly lovely on this remote island?

5. Explore Caverne Patate

There are a couple of cave systems on the island where pirates no doubt once hid their treasure troves. I went to Caverne Patate, which translates as Sweet Potato Cave, although no one seemed to know why it was called this.

While not that far, the walk through the cave system is a little tricky in places and comfortable walking shoes with a good grip are essential. Torches were provided, which are needed to see where you are treading, and I’d take some water with you too. We were told not to, but I found it very humid inside and got rather dehydrated.

6. Walk with giant tortoises at François Leguat

Set in a 20-hectare conservation area, Francois Leguat nature reserve is home to over 3,000 giant tortoises. It was founded by zoologist Owen Griffiths, who wished to recreate the landscape of the island from hundreds of years ago. There are over 110,000 endemic and native plants in the park.

Two species of giant tortoise once thrived on the island but with the arrival of the first immigrants, both species became extinct. The tortoises found in the park today, Aldabra tortoises, are close relatives of the extinct species and fulfill the same ecological roles of browsing, grazing and spreading the seeds of native plants. They are the last surviving species of giant tortoise that were once found in the Indian Ocean. Another vulnerable species, Radiata tortoise, one of the most beautiful species of tortoises, can also be seen in the park.

The walk through the gorge that runs through the park was wonderful, with no end of tortoises coming up to me with their necks held high, asking for a tickle. The gorge itself is beautiful and with the ground scattered with hundreds of giant tortoises, it is quite a sight.

Off the beaten track things to do in Mauritius - Pet giant tortoise on Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean

There is nothing an Aldabra tortoise enjoys more than to be stroked on the neck.

In addition to the tortoises, there is an on-site restaurant, museums and shop, as well as an interesting cave system.

7. Visit Coco Island

Within the lagoon of Rodrigues, which is formed by the encircling coral reef, there are a number of small uninhabited islands. We went to Coco Island, which took about an hour to reach by boat, giving you some idea of the vastness of the lagoon. It’s a place not to be missed and can only be visited by arrangement with the local tourism office.

Coco Island in Rodrigues in the Indian Ocean

A thin strip of soft sand runs around the edge of the island, which is surrounded by clear, azure-blue water. It’s a wonderful place to swim from and our trip included lunch and a short guided walk, where we learnt about the various species of birds that fill the air, the trees and the ground. They are everywhere!

8. Drink lemons!

The small yellow and green sweet lemons that grow on the island make a deliciously refreshing drink that really hits the spot on a hot day – it’s simply lemon juice, water and a little sugar. If you are after something with a bit more of a kick try Ti’ Punch made from white rum, lemon juice and honey.

9. Eat seafood

Being an island it’s no surprise that seafood is popular. Wahoo and carangue fish featured on many menus and were excellent, but two of my favourite dishes were gratin de fruit de mer at Chez Paulina’s up in the mountains and salade marlin fumee (smoked marlin salad) at Restaurant le Marlin Bleu.

Enjoy the seafood on Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean

If you visit on 1st March don’t miss the fish festival held each year to celebrate the start of the net-fishing season. The men work as a cooperative and put out huge nets before chasing the fish into them by banging on the sides of their boats.

10. Swim, snorkel or scuba dive in the lagoon

Among the main attractions of the island has to be the lagoon and coral reef that surrounds it. The turquoise, shallow water is wonderfully warm, ranging between 22 ⁰C in August and 29 ⁰C in March – perfect for swimming and snorkelling. You’ll find world-class scuba diving here too with a great range of sites suitable for both beginners and more experienced divers . There are a number of dive centres including one at Cotton Bay hotel .

Crystal clear waters of the lagoon encircling Rodrigues Island in the Indian Ocean

Having enjoyed a fabulous week on Rodrigues Island the words ‘You’ll get bored in a couple of days’ still echo in my ears. Don’t believe a word of it. I found a week was not long enough to fit in everything I wanted to do. As well as missing out on the zipline I didn’t manage to see the traditional dancing, Sega tambour, which is listed as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage activity, and I would have loved to have done some more hiking and snorkelling. If you then add in some time to simply relax and unwind you could easily fill a ten day or two-week holiday in Rodrigues. In fact, you may never want to leave.

Where to stay on Rodrigues Island

Being such a small island, it’s easy to get around wherever you are based if you hire a car. For most of my visit, I stayed at The Pirates Lodge just a couple of minutes walk from the lovely unspoilt beach of Baie de Saint-Francois. This is also the starting point for the hike to Trou d’Argent Beach.

The lodge was fairly basic, with a small swimming pool but the owner was particularly welcoming and even drove a small group of guests, including myself, to a mountain top restaurant one evening where we had a lovely meal in good company.

My favourite hotel on the island though is Tekoma Boutik Hotel Rodrigues . I didn’t stay here but a friend of mine did and it looked stunning. The food here, especially the breakfast, is reputedly extremely good too.

Hello, is the snorkelling better on Rodriguez than on Mauritius? Where are more fishes, corals and so on?

Kathryn Burrington

I’m sorry I don’t know. I’ve never been to Mauritius so I can’t compare it.

Bernhard Klug

Very nice to read, thank you! We were there in 2009 and the plans to develop tourism were already there. It seems that there is just little progress, which is a blessing! We were watching flying foxes flying at sunset, when we were staying in the “mountains” and gazed at the small herds of cattle that passed the beach every morning as we lived at the shore. Rodrigues sticks in my mind as being the most relaxed place i have ever been so far – and it´s beautiful!

It is very special and I dearly hope they don’t develop it too much. I’d love to go back one day.

Roselyne

Which corner of the island would you recommend for accommodation?

It’s a very small island so it’s easy to get around, if you hire a car, wherever you are based. I stayed in The Pirates Lodge by Baie de Saint-Francois. I’ll add a section to the end of this article about it to give you a better idea of what it was like.

Dhara

Looks like a fabulous off the grid place. Love the giant tortoises! And the beaches look lovely! Great information and gorgeous photos.

Thank you! It is a very special little island.

Green Global Trek

Well I had never heard of Rodrigues Island before reading your post, even though I grew up in South Africa and many people would go to Mauritius for vacations. Your video is terrific and between the huge tortoises in abundance, the coral reefs and the local market, it definitely seems an attractive off the beaten track destination. Am hoping to get back to my roots in 2019 with travels in Africa. Thanks for the introduction!

Rodrigues really is a well-kept secret. It’s quite a buzz to be able to introduce it to people. They are eager to get the word out but hope to grow their tourism industry slowly in a sustainable manner. I hope you make it there. I’m sure you’ll enjoy it as much as I did.

alison abbott

This whole trip to Rodrigues Island had me getting out my atlas. It looks like just the sort of undiscovered treasure my husband and I would love to celebrate our anniversary!

You would love it I’m so sure and I know the perfect romantic hotel. More posts coming soon!

Suzanne - The Travelbunny

Rodrigues was somewhere very special and I agree, a week isn’t enough. I’d love to go back and do all again some day.

Oh yes, me too and to see the caves and zipline I didn’t have time for. I might skip the suspension bridge though!

Lucy

Looks fabulous! That water colour is just dreamy and sounds like a great mix of things to do. Love a ti-punch too, got quite the taste for them in Guadeloupe, must be a French tropical island thing!

It was fabulous to see the island from the plane. The different colours of the water were indeed dreamy. however, without the sweet Rodrigean lemons, a ti’ punch just wouldn’t be the same 😉

Jaillan Yehia

That beach! Looks like such an unspoiled and slow-paced destination with amazing nature, and I must admit I had not heard of it before this!

It was fabulous! And just a smattering of tourists. Unspoilt for sure.

Fiona Maclean

Quite magical photography of one of my favourite trips to date (with great company!) – will we ever forget Rodrigues? I really doubt it, there were so many special moments!

Definitely one of the best trips I’ve ever been on. Weren’t the tortoises wonderful, and the views and the people and the lagoon and the Ti Punch!! I’ll never forget!

Anna Parker

I love this, and this sort of place. I don’t think I would want to go to Mauritius or the Maldives as they are full of resorts, but here – well, it is unspoilt and still has real life all over it for you to enjoy. It looks gorgeous and there are aren’t many places left like this!

Exactly! However, they do want to grow their tourism industry, hopefully in a slow and sustainable manner.

"An enchanting and unspoiled island" Gerald Durrell

Around the island

Central rodrigues, diving and snorkelling on rodrigues, offshore islands, port mathurin and around.

Named after the Portuguese navigator Don Diego Rodriguez who discovered it in 1598, the small self-governing island dependency of Rodrigues lies 560km to Mauritius’s northeast. The island is just 17.5km long and 8km wide, with an 80km-long coastline sheltering around twenty secluded beaches. Rustic simplicity and a laidback Creole charm are its hallmark, and visitors to Mauritius’s sleepy sister, nicknamed “Cinderella of the Mascareignes”, invariably return misty-eyed. The pace may be as slow as the tortoises that once covered the island – Rodrigues is often referred to as a “Mauritius of fifty years ago” – but there’s a surprising amount to do. Although the island’s main attractions can be covered in three days, you could easily spend a week here.

With the second highest number of endemic island species in the world (after Ascension Island), Rodrigues is a natural destination for ecotourism and in the island’s centre a network of eco-trails and cycle routes crisscross the hills. Offshore, trips run to several small islands , including Île aux Cocos, where noddys and terns bob on branches in the breeze. The island has a great network of guesthouses and tables d’hôtes , but there are no big hotels, motorized watersports, billboards or shopping malls, and just two discos island-wide. Port Mathurin , on the north coast, is Rodrigues’ capital and only town, with a centre just seven streets wide, while the beautiful east coast beats Mauritius hands-down for snorkelling, diving and deep-sea fishing.

Tailor-made travel itineraries for Mauritius, created by local experts

Delightful Mauritius

18 days  / from 5200 USD

Delightful Mauritius

Stay in four different areas on this trip - first the South Coast, then the West Coast, then Chamarel in the center of the island, before spending the last few days relaxing on the beach of the popular North Coast. Mauritius has so much more to offer than just gorgeous beaches!

A main road leads from Sir Gaetan Duval Airport at Plaine Corail along the island’s centre to Mont Lubin before branching off into different directions. Visitors are lured to the hilly east mainly for its coastline, the most celebrated on Rodrigues, which has almost all the coastal beauty spots, the best swimming beaches and watersports including kitesurfing, deep-sea fishing and diving. In the centre there are opportunities for ecotourism and adventure among the island’s hills, while the west holds Rodrigues’ premier eco-attraction, François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve. As there’s no coastal road in the west or east, however, note that many journeys involve going back to the centre and out again.

The wide stretch of white sand at Pointe Coton is generally thought of as the most beautiful beach on the island, while for snorkellers “the aquarium” offshore from the neighbouring fishing village of St François – a channel lined with coral and teeming with fish – is undoubtedly a highlight. There was no road, no phone and no TV at St François when the first guesthouse opened here 25 years ago, and the tiny settlement remains sleepy despite being the east’s tourism hub. The palm-fringed stretch of white sand at Anse Ally , to the north of the village, is also home to the new design hotel Tekoma – an opening that cements the area’s hip reputation. The main reason for St François’ popularity, however, is that it’s within walking distance of the gem in Rodrigues’ crown, Trou d’Argent , “Money Hole”. This wild cove where pirates once landed was recently named among the thirty best-preserved beaches worldwide.

Of the roads winding down through valleys to southeastern coastal settlements, the road to Mourouk has the most magnificent views of the lagoon and islands. The village itself may be small, but as the island’s kitesurfing centre, has a big reputation. Port Sud Est , a tiny village with one-room shops, lies nearby. Another dizzying road snakes down to off-the-beaten-track Graviers , start point for the island’s best-known coastal walk – look out for famous local fisherman Tonio cooking up a beachside fish feast in season.

The west is the driest, flattest part of the island, partly covered by the prairie of Plaine Corail, famous for its limestone caves. There are two worthwhile attractions here just ten minutes’ drive from the airport: Caverne Patate , the longest and best-known cave, and the island’s newest attraction, the François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve , where giant tortoises already look at home.

François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve

Walking among around two hundred giant tortoises in the wild is the key draw at François Leguat Giant Tortoise and Cave Reserve . Brought over from La Vanille Réserve Mascareignes on Mauritius eight years ago, some 1500 Aldabra tortoises have now been reintroduced into the wild in this 20-hectare nature reserve. The tortoises can be stroked and adopted, while a suspended wooden walkway takes you past 186,000 endemics replanted as part of an on-going “re-wilding” project.

Also included in the ticket is a half-hour guided visit to a limestone cave: the only show cave in the Indian Ocean. Strategically placed lights reveal rock formations such as columns, curtains and eccentrics, and small groups are shown the bones of a solitaire, stuck in the cave walls. Elsewhere in the reserve there’s a cage of rare golden-coloured Rodrigues fruit bats ( Pteropus rodricensis ), the island’s only endemic mammal, saved from extinction by Gerald Durrell, and still critically endangered with around nine thousand pairs – they can be seen flying at dusk island-wide. A small but good museum details the human, natural and geological history of the island, and there’s a café-restaurant on site.

Rodrigues’ well-preserved marine environment is its key attraction. Thanks to an enlightened environment minister, himself a diver, the island has no industrial pollution and around 280 species of coral, a dizzying array of marine life including rays, jacks, turtles and white-tipped reef sharks, and dramatic underwater scenery which includes caves and canyons. The island has two marine parks, one at Mourouk in the southeast and another at Rivière Banane in the northeast

Diving is mainly off the south and east coasts. The windward coast, and close to the reef, the east coast is arguably the best, with around twenty dive sites including deep blue dives, coral dives and canyon diving. The most famous dive sites are La Passe St François, a kilometre-long channel near St François teeming with exotic fish, from tuna to rays, and the equally impressive La Grand Passe to the south off Port Sud Est. Although Rodrigues’ dive scene and virgin sites are best for qualified divers with experience, there are also shallow dives suitable for beginners and dive schools offering beginners lessons. The ideal months for diving are October to December, and March to April; dive centres close in July and August.

The best beachfront snorkelling is near the reef at Marouk, where equipment can be rented, in “the aquarium” off St François and around Île Hermitage and Île aux Chats, reached by fishing boat from Port Sud Est. Enquire at Rodrigues Tourism Office about glass-bottom boat trips.

Several of the eighteen islets sprinkled around Rodrigues can be visited, typically by travelling in an off-duty fisherman’s pirogue. The most popular day-trip is to the blinding white sandbar of Île aux Cocos (Coconut Island), 4km off the west coast. At around 1.5km long and 150m wide, it’s famous for its seabirds, and a stroll around the sanctuary reveals the bridled tern and fairy tern, and lesser and common brown noddy, which, unbothered by human presence, cling to the casuarinas and palms. Stakeholder Discovery Rodrigues manage the island and give an introduction of the main highlights to boat arrivals, but you’ll need to get there independently by arranging your own boat crossing.

It takes a bit of an effort to get to the volcanic desertscape of Île Catherine , also off the west coast. From the end of the road at Cascade Pistache (reached by bus from Mount Lubin), it’s a two-hour trek to Pointe Mapou, from where a fishing boat can make the trip across: it’s best to undertake this as a randonnée with guide Milaineda Edouard.

The three uninhabited southern islets make for popular day-trips with swimming and snorkelling: Île aux Chats (Cat Island), known for its beautiful beach, tiny Île Hermitage (Hermits Island), closer to shore, and the largest, Île Gombrani .

Surrounded by leafy avenues, Rodrigues’ capital PORT MATHURIN is both pleasant and easy to navigate on foot, and holds a few reminders of the island’s French and British colonial heritage in nineteenth-century buildings such as Governor’s House. It’s best visited early Saturday mornings when locals from outlying areas descend to shop and gossip at the sprawling weekly market. The coast road east from the town is the route most travelled by visitors.

Governor’s House

A lovely wooden, yellow-painted colonial building with turquoise shutters, Governor’s House was built in 1873. Once abuzz with colonial affairs, it is still used for government meetings and visitors can only peek into the sitting room, with its old-fashioned furniture, to get a flavour of bygone days.

Full Day Tour on Rodrigues Island - Full Description

This guided full day tour will start at 08.30 a.m., you will be picked up right from your doorstep to head towards the exploration sites. An experienced, very friendly guide will walk you through the wonderful historical sites to help you uncover Rodrigues’ indigenous character and exoticism. First, you will visit Port Mathurin, the capital city of the island, where you will come across buzzing market stalls as well as old colonial dwellings and small-scale trades. The contagious effervescence of the market will surely warm your heart.

Shortly after this visit, you will head to a now obsolete coral quarry. Although the quarry is no longer operational, you will still be able to see dents in the landscape where workers used to manually cut coral blocks. Till this day, a few coral blocks can be seen lying around. From there on, you will stop at specific viewpoints, such as Reine de Rodrigues and Mont Limon, from where you will also be able to enjoy spectacular panoramic views over Rodrigues.

Next, you will visit a typical Rodriguan household, which will be an incredibly fun experience. During the visit, you will not only explore the building but also you will also meet its inhabitants and discover up-close the Rodriguans’ trademark, that is a fine blend of authenticity and hospitality. You will get to explore their gardens, and as most of them also breed animals, you will get to see those too. Additionally, at some point during the tour, you will kindly be asked to plant a sapling with your very own hands. In fact, each person taking part in the tour will be encouraged to do so - this initiative is an attempt to contribute to environmental preservation on the island.

Following that, you will head to Saint Gabriel Church, a well-known church constructed between 1936 and 1939, that has beautifully stood the test of time. Its construction was made possible by native volunteers who laboriously carried stone, sand and coral from all corners of the island. The church regularly attracts many visitors and for good reason; the building has an eerie atmosphere and a highly appealing old-time charm. After that, you will be on your way to Pajérôme, locally hailed as a sacred site, the place has a water fountain, sourced directly from the nearby mountain.

You will also get to explore the enigmatic cave, Caverne Patate, that hosts beautifully-shaped stalactites and stalagmites, which are essentially various minerals deposits that form spikes hanging from the ceilings. Some of the stalactites and stalagmites are said to take the uncanny shapes, such as that of a dragon, a lion and even the Buddha. Walking through the cave itself is fairly easy, however, the surface can be slippery sometimes so shoes with a good grip are advised. For lunch, you will stop at a local restaurant that will be pointed to you by the accompanying guide. You will surely have a fantastic time exploring the island and mingling with its charming, friendly inhabitants.

Recommended to bring:

  • Bottle of water
  • Sports shoes
  • Spare clothes

94 things to do in rodrigues.

14 Anse Bouteille swimming cove things to do in Rodrigues

We spent several months in Rodrigues checking out a lot of different corners of this compact island. Many Mauritians and Rodriguans asked us if we didn’t get bored here. The answer to that question is a resounding no—and there are even things we didn’t do yet but are saving for a return trip. Many Rodriguans we spoke to weren’t familiar with some of the places we’ve been to. So here’s a monster list of more than 90 things to do in Rodrigues. And a map !

8 kitesrufing Mourouk things to do in Rodrigues

  • Pick up a free paper map at the Rodrigues tourist information office in Port Mathurin to get an overview of this small island
  • Once you’re good at kitesurfing, do a downwinder trip to Île aux Chats
  • Join a boat trip to Île aux Cocos. From there you can enjoy a tour, do some birdwatching, and have a swim
  • Hike up Montagne Croupier
  • Do a boat trip to Île aux Chats and Île Hermitage
  • Join the walking tour of Port Mathurin. It’s usually organized on Tuesdays by Rodrigues Friendly Café . Contact them on  Facebook or by phone: +230 5498 0010. The price is 300 Rupees per person, which includes a refreshment and their favorite sweet: Boudoute à la crème de limon local . It’s in French
  • Go snorkeling at the ‘aquarium’ in Rivière Banane (at low tide). Bring your own snorkel gear or borrow it
  • Watch the MV Black Rhino or the MV Mauritius Trochetia arrive at the port of Port Mathurin. The ship arrives after two days of travel from Port Louis. You can track this in the Marine Traffic app/website
  • Watch the stars at night (during a power outage)
  • Walk up the highest peak, Mont Limon . At 389 meters, it’s not a difficult hike at all, so definitely do it. But does Mont Limon have the best views of Rodrigues island? Also no, so stay tuned for the other mountain top suggestions down this list!
  • Visit the François Leguat Nature Reserve. The tour includes petting many giant tortoises and a visit to the Grande Caverne cave system

7 plane spotting things to do in Rodrigues

  • Visit Pointe Corail/Anse Quitor and the lonely abandoned fisherman’s station
  • Join a tour (or wander into) Caverne Patate. We showed up for one of the times a tour started, but a guy just pointed us in the direction of one of the cave entrances, trusting us we’d find our way out as well
  • Go to the Carrière de Corail and admire the artsy murals

1 Rodrigues bus shelter sega tambour

  • Have a picnic at Pointe Matourin/Pointe Mapou, aka the roundabout at ‘the End of the World’
  • At low tide, visit the nameless island close to the funky church on foot
  • Visit the funky boat-shaped church. It’s made of local materials and designed by a Rodriguan. The shape is truly iconic. The official name is La Chapelle Saint Jean L’Evangéliste
  • Rent a kayak to paddle to Îlot Hollandais, Île aux Fous, and Île aux Diamant
  • Visit the Grande Montagne Nature reserve and take a tour. And of course, pet a tortoise. They have five
  • Rent a kayak to paddle to Île Michel, Île Paille en Queue
  • Visit the 5 Senses Botanic Garden (and pet their solo tortoise)
  • Go ziplining over the Mourouk River valley

9 via ferrata things to do in Rodrigues

  • Walk over the Pont Suspendu at Cascade Pistache. And if you think that’s boring, you can do the bridge swing
  • See Port Mathurin from Pointe Cannon
  • Enjoy a sunset dinner at Le Pandanus
  • Hike the Trou d’Argent hike and stand on the easternmost point of continental Africa
  • Hike from Montagne Cabris to Anse Bouteille and go for a swim in azure waters
  • Watch the fishermen at low tide approach the reef at Plage Baladirou and have a swim
  • Hike to the cross at Pointe Monnier and watch the MV Black Rhino depart. This is usually at 16:00 after the ship has been in Rodrigues unloading/reloading for two days
  • Hike up Montagne Topaze and watch the plane land
  • Rent a scooter and explore the backroads
  • Hike up Mont Chéri and have the best view over Mourouk
  • Go urban exploring the semi-abandoned antennas at Montagne Malartic, the second-highest peak in Rodrigues
  • Visit Port Mathurin market on a Saturday and buy delicious jars of limon confit and achard de bilamby
  • Socialize at Café Friendly at the after-work tapas. They usually organize this event once per month and they will mention it on their Facebook page
  • Eat fishy things, such as kono-kono salad and ourite
  • Kayak to Ile Frégate, Île Destinée, Île Catherine, and Île Marianne
  • Visit the water reservoir at Anse Raffin
  • Go diving in various places, including in the lagoon in Mourouk
  • Do a boat trip to Île Plate and Île Gombrani
  • Venture outside of the lagoon by joining a big game fishing thing (I don’t approve) or wave kiting if you’re kickass at kitesurfing

13 Sega tambour unesco world heritage intangible Rodrigues island Mauritius monument

  • Take a local bus on the island. Just make sure it isn’t the last bus, which usually runs at 17:00
  • Watch a pirogue sailing regatta from Oasis Vacances. They’re announced only shortly in advance!
  • Admire the mangroves in Baie Malgache. You can also take a kayaking tour there with a local who will make sure you don’t get stuck in the mud at low tide
  • Go windsurfing in Mourouk. I’ve only seen one person do this in a sea full of kitesurfers, but it’s possible
  • If you are a literal child, you can rent an Optimist dinghy in Mourouk and sail it in the lagoon for a bit. Again, I’ve only seen the Optimist being utilized once (with mild success)
  • Watch the ourite dry in various locations on the island
  • Go shopping at the market in Mont Lubin. It’s often a bit cheaper there as this market is closer to the farms
  • When it’s the season, get up very early to watch the sea blend with the sky on the north coast. This phenomenon doesn’t have a particular name, but it can be witnessed in autumn and spring in Rodrigues when the temperatures are neither too hot nor too cold and it’s wind still
  • Visit the Saint Gabriel Cathedral. It’s in a beautiful area of the island and quite a pretty building
  • Buy gato piment from a shop when they have it
  • Follow the scent of barbeque and eat a local saucisse doux sausage. I think it’s a pork sausage, but I’m not sure. These grill masters also sell chicken wings, hot dog sausages, and garlic bread if that’s more up your alley
  • Stand on the sharp craggy rocks of Pointe Cotton

11 Ti Gajak Jean-Marc boatman Rodrigues Île aux Crabes trip

  • Pick up some words and phrases of Rodriguan Creole. Know when to say “ korek! ” and of course the Mauritian classic “ c’est top! “
  • Get shitfaced drunk in Ti La Passe during karaoke night, usually on Thursday
  • Eat fruits that are in season, such as papaya or passion fruit
  • Admire the varying shells on the beaches of Rodrigues. You’ll notice that the species change from one beach to another. But don’t take them home! That’s not allowed and customs in Rodrigues will take them from you if you try to fly out with them. Also, taking sea shells can seriously damage the beautiful ecosystem of Rodrigues y’all came for, since tiny organisms make those their home
  • Dodge the orange yarn of spiderwebs that cross various hiking trail tunnels. Then find the spider and admire the size of it
  • Fight off olochuri ( snake sea cucumber/synapta maculata ) while wading through the water. They’ll hug you and never let go if you’re wearing neoprene
  • Enjoy a big milkshake and a quiet afternoon at Kafé Rose. This is simply the best café in Port Mathurin for quiet times, so perhaps bring a book!
  • Spot a faratha man in Port Mathurin and catch him to get a fat stack of farathas
  • Eat at the food court in Port Mathurin with someone who wants to eat something different from you. From vegetarian to fishy, at the food court in Port Mathurin, they have it all
  • See the tiniest mosque in the world in Port Mathurin (maybe an exaggeration)
  • Visit the Hindu temple on the main road between Port Mathurin and Mont Lubin
  • Hitchhike with a Rodriguan. Distances are short and people are very trusting. Also this is important if you miss the last bus
  • Buy locally-grown coffee from Madame Casimir in Cygangue. She sometimes shows people around and serves coffee
  • Go kiting to Graviers. This is an ‘upwinder’, so you need to be skilled enough to make it up there without tiring yourself out too much
  • From Île aux Cocos, watch longingly to Île au Sable in the distance. That island is generally off-limits for visitors since it’s a nature reserve, but if you know the right boatman (e.g. Jean-Marc from Ti Gajak), you can land on the sandy part for a bit as long as you don’t venture out into the forest where the birds nest
  • Visit the island that isn’t: Île Michel peninsula. And while you’re in the area, go to Petit Butte peninsula as well
  • On the shitty road between Songes and Anse Raffin, buy some artisan limon confit aigre doux from one of the many shops. It’s a bit cheaper here than at Port Mathurin market and a good way to take a break from riding over the bumpy road
  • Try out a variety of pizzas, from the calzones of Le Point Chaud to the studenty Ti Baz in Mont Lubin and the fancy ones at L’Atelier Gourmand. The most normal pizzas are at The Blue Marlin in Anse aux Anglais.
  • Go whale watching, either from the shore or at sea outside the reef. If the seasonal info from Mauritius also applies to Rodrigues, it’s possible to see sperm whales year-round, but for humpback whales, your best guess is between July and November. I only saw whales from the mainland (they make a big sploosh) and didn’t join a tour for this
  • See the Rodrigues flying fox in the hills of Rodrigues. They usually roost at around 16:00 in Malabar. However, these gigantic fruit bats are much shyer than their (larger) Mauritian cousins. So count yourself lucky if you manage to see one up close enough to see their puppy dog eyes
  • Visit the old ‘lighthouse’ at memorial du traité

12 Rooster chicken animals of Rodrigues

  • If you are blessed with such a job, choose Rodrigues for working remotely . It’s actually not such a bad place to open up your laptop, crack your fingers, and earn some money

10 flowers of Rodrigues island Mauritius

  • Admire or buy traditional woven straw hats or placemats called  nattes . You’ll encounter shops that sell these local Rodriguan products at the Port Mathurin market, but also at roadside stalls, such as on the road to Pointe Coton
  • Lie down in the shadow of the trees on a lazy Sunday on the beach and enjoy the breeze and good company
  • Drink a beer on the beach while watching kitesurfers crash their kites
  • If you travel with climbing gear, go explore new routes on the steep side of Montagne Chéri and this funky rock near Montagne Croupier
  • Cozy up inside during a cyclone or anticyclone
  • Take the MV Trochetia back to Mauritius across the shining Indian Ocean. Everyone is longing for the day when there is again a passenger service between Mauritius and Rodrigues
  • Learn the schedule of your local house geckos and when they visit the kitchen. If you’re unlucky, you’ll see the bigger ones eat the baby lizards
  • Drink a coconut when the coconut man is there next to the market. Are his coconuts from Agaléga? I think that depends on how well the coconuts grow in Rodrigues that year, but I’ve heard sometimes they do import coconuts from Agaléga
  • Hike down the Cascade Pigeon hiking trail and visit the water reservoir that serves Port Mathurin. It’s not a very popular trail in a very humid area, so bring mosquito repellent and long pants
  • Spot tropicbirds ( paille-en-queue ) in the valleys and near the mountain peaks. They have a spectacularly long tail and are generally beautiful birds
  • Stay long enough in Rodrigues to watch the island change. You might see a road being finished, a telecom tower being built, or even just something as simple as watching the season change. I promise you won’t regret it!

Frequently asked questions

  • First and foremost, pack your passport, travel documents, credit cards and medications. Next, you’ll want some entertainment to while away the hours. A thrilling book and a phone crammed with your favorite movies are some great options. If you intend to take a short nap, a quality neck pillow and a pair of earplugs will also be useful. Finally, leave some space for a toothbrush and some cleansing wipes to ensure you arrive at your destination looking fresh and raring to go.
  • Pack all your full-sized bottles of shampoo and hairspray in your checked baggage. Any liquids or gels in your carry-on bag larger than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) will be confiscated by security. Pointed or sharp objects, like your beloved Swiss Army knife, and dangerous products which are explosive or flammable, such as aerosol cans, spray paint and fireworks, are also prohibited.
  • The key to a comfortable flight is often as simple as your clothing choices. Prepare yourself for varying temperatures by layering up. That way you’ll stay nice and warm if the cabin starts to cool down. Shoes like high heels and sandals are best left in your suitcase. Even though they may be your favorites, opt for flat, closed-toed footwear like sneakers. Your feet will thank you later.
  • The result of lengthy periods of inactivity, deep vein thrombosis (DVT) is a condition that can affect some passengers during long-haul flights. But the great news is there are proven ways to lower your risk of developing it. Stay hydrated, get up and walk around the cabin as much as you can and wear compression socks to help improve your circulation.
  • Security personnel first need to see that you have a valid ID and travel documents before anything else. Keep them close by.
  • Next up, both you and your carry-on bag will be X-rayed. To speed things up, take off anything that might set the alarms off. Personal belongings like your belt, jacket and headphones need to go through the machine.
  • All electronic gadgets, including your tablet and phone, are also required to be scanned separately.
  • Traveling with your favorite hand cream? Not a problem. As long as the volume is no greater than 3.4 ounces (100 milliliters) and it’s stored in a zip-close bag, you can keep it with you in your carry-on luggage.
  • Slip-on shoes are a great footwear choice as you’re less likely to have to remove them when passing through security. Big boots and other bulky shoes are often subjected to additional screening.
  • Airlines will not allow any sharp items or pocket knives in the cabin. If you need to bring these kinds of items, check them in.

Travel to Rodrigues – An Island Escape

trip to rodrigues

If you’re searching for Indian Ocean islands to escape it all, then the island of Rodrigues is just the ticket. According to Mauritians, the unspoiled beauty of Rodrigues is what Mauritius was 50 years ago. So, experience both sides of the coin, and while you’re in paradise, travel to Rodrigues. Just over an hour away by air, and you’re in paradise of yesteryear.

About Rodrigues

The Mauritian territory is located 650km from Mauritius, but, beyond the beautiful beaches, it couldn’t be more different. While Mauritius has drawn a steady stream of tourism, and development over the last few decades, Rodrigues has not. The ultimate result of this is a tropical island without too much of the modern-day trappings of development.

Rodrigues has a small population – under 40,000 inhabitants – and the pace of life is slow, perfect for a holiday escape. The official language of the island is English, however, French and Créole are the most widely spoken.

The island’s natural beauty has been kept intact, and, as a small volcanic outcrop in the Indian Ocean, it’s surrounded by a turquoise lagoon and coral reefs teeming with marine life. Volcanic mountains, cloaked with rich vegetation provide ideal hiking routes, while coves and caves make for great exploring along the coastline.

There are plenty of islets dotted around Rodrigues

For a small space (the island is only about 18km in length), Rodrigues packs a lot in.

The Grande Montagn e Nature Reserve offers panoramic views over the island. Wind through the trails of the forest to reach the 300-350m high summit. The nature reserve is a prime spot to view the island’s rare plant life, endemic trees, and previously endangered bird species.

After working up a sweat, cool down on a boat trip to Île aux Cocos , one of the smaller islands neighbouring Rodrigues. White crystal white sands and turquoise seas are somewhat ubiquitous in this region, Île aux Cocos’ charm lies in its size – 1,2km in length and 250m across. Ensuring that you feel like you truly have escaped it all. You’ll find as your companions on your day trip, seabirds of varying species.

You’ll feel like you stepped into the pages of Treasure Island when visiting Trou D’Argent . Flanked by rugged cliffs, protecting pristine waters and picturesque beach, this little cove is only accessible by foot. Indian Ocean pirates and corsairs once sailed these waters, and it’s easy to imagine them choosing this spot to hide their loot. This spot is an ideal day trip for families as the path is easy-going and well marked.

The island has plenty to offer visitors, from intricate cave systems, to giant tortoises, and incredible diving, a few days spent here while on holiday in Mauritius is worth the trip.

When to visit : Rodrigues usually experiences pleasant weather all year round. November to April are the summer months, and temperatures usually peak at the mid-30 o Cs. The winter months, between May and October see temperatures peak at the mid-20 o Cs. Cyclone season usually runs from December to May, although this is often difficult to predict.

Where to stay : The island offers a range of accommodation types, although you won’t find the sprawling resorts you would in Mauritius. We love the charming beachside boutique hotel, Tekoma , or, the relaxed, garden retreat of La Belle Rodriguaise , with endless views over the ocean.

How to get there : Rodrigues is a Mauritian territory, so travel via the main island. Air Mauritius is due to restart flights to Rodrigues soon. Under usual circumstances, the airline operates daily return flights between Rodrigues and Mauritius.

Current restrictions : Until the 30th of September, fully vaccinated travellers can enjoy an in-resort stay at select hotels for 7 days. PCR tests: 3-7 days prior to travel. There is still a travel ban in place for arrivals from some countries.

From the 1st of October, Mauritius fully re-opens to vaccinated travellers. After presenting a PCR test no older than 72 hours, these arrivals are free to explore the island. Non-vaccinated travellers need to quarantine in their hotel rooms for the first 14 days.
