The on-screen evolution of the Klingons - from Star Trek OS to Discovery

From hairy-lipped humans to the classic models and now Discovery's fearsome new versions, a look at the evolution of the Klingons - and how the changes can be explained in the context of the Star Trek universe

The Klingons are the most recognisable alien race in the Star Trek universe. Those distinctive skull ridges, deep brown skin tone, goatee beards for the men and snarling countenances for both sexes are what immediately spring to mind.

Yet down the years the Klingons have undergone a number of updates – some relatively subtle, others pretty extreme – and as Star Trek: Discovery catapults us into a new era of Star Trek, we’ve seen some of the most radical changes yet.

Here’s a rundown of the most significant stages in Klingon evolution, followed by a look at how in-universe theories and canonical decrees have attempted to make sense of those changes…

The original Klingons

Original Star Trek Klingon

If you’re not au fait with Star Trek The Original Series, you may not be aware that the first Klingons were basically humans with unhealthy spray-tan addictions, an aversion to plucking their eyebrows and droopy moustaches to denote their villainous tendencies.

The classic Klingons

Klingons

Star Trek: The Motion Picture, the first big-screen outing for the franchise, introduced the basic template for the Klingons we know and love/loathe today. In that film, their relatively featureless skull plates were dominated by a well-defined central ridge, which gave way to the classic brow morphology seen in both the later movies and – as above on Lieutenant Worf and friends – in TV series Star Trek: the Next Generation.

More like this

While minor elements, such as the extent of the ridges on the nose, have fluctuated over the years, this has more or less been the standard model ever since. Until now...

The new/old Klingons

Star Trek Discovery Klingons

Enter Star Trek: Discovery, the first new Trek TV for well over a decade, and we have a redesign that is quite a significant departure from the classic Klingon and has almost nothing in common with the Original Series version – despite the fact that Discovery is set just ten years before it.

First up, these new/old Klingons appear to be completely hairless (although admittedly we haven't see what's under those rather fetching uniforms), meaning no luxuriant Samurai-style locks and – most radical of all – no beards or moustaches.

Their skull ridges, meanwhile, seem to be much more integrally connected to their prominent, cartilaginous-looking noses and, rather than dark brown, their skin tone varies from grey through purplish to a bluish black.

They're more alien than any Klingon we've seen before, with a definite hint of rhino to them and, frankly, they look hard as hell.

How do we explain the changes?

In the real world, the answer to this is a mixture of budget constraints, advances in prosthetics and designers' natural instincts to re-invent. But explaining the changes to Klingon physiology within the Star Trek universe itself is another matter – especially given the respective points in history that they appear.

Star Trek fans came up with numerous theories to deal with the difference between Star Trek OS Klingons and their later counterparts, including... the OS versions had their ridges removed for social or strategic reasons; or they were humans raised as Klingons; or they were hybrids.

In 1996 Deep Space 9 episode Trials and Tribble-ations, Worf at least acknowledged the issue, saying simply "we do not discuss it with outsiders". But it wasn't until a 2005 episode of Star Trek: Enterprise that the show offered an explanation – that an attempt to create enhanced soldiers using a mix of Klingon and human DNA had led to a viral pandemic that conveyed human physical characteristics on infected Klingons and their offspring.

Star Trek Klingon and Captain Kirk

That could also account for the radical difference between the OS Klingons and those we see in Discovery ten years earlier (presumably pre-virus). What it doesn't explain is the differences between Discovery Klingons and the rest.

There are some relatively simple ways we might deal with the hairlessness – perhaps it's a military edict of the time, like a buzz cut in the army, maybe these Klingons are part of a specific cadre or cult, or maybe it's just fashion.

The rest remains something of a puzzle but, arguably, doesn't go too far beyond the kind of character redesigns we accept every time a show is relaunched (think the Zygons in Doctor Who, for example). They are, after all, more or less recognisably Klingon.

Time will tell as to whether Discovery offers an explanation – but as long as they don't start messing with Vulcans' ears, we can probably let it go.

Screen Rant

Star trek is still dealing with discovery’s klingon damage.

Star Trek: Discovery's Klingons were so poorly received, the bloodthirsty warrior race hasn't made a live-action appearance in a Star Trek show since.

The Klingons have been missing from live-action since Star Trek: Discovery season 2, which shows just how much damage the series' reimagined Klingons did to the bloodthirsty warrior race and their place in the franchise. The Klingons, in their most popular 24th-century incarnation, still are a regular sight in Star Trek: Lower Decks , and season 3 even featured the return of Chancellor Martok (J.G. Hertzler) . Yet the wait to see the Klingons return in live-action on Star Trek: Discovery or Star Trek: Strange New Worlds seems to have no end in sight after the number Discovery did on the Klingons.

In truth, the Klingons have been redesigned before. Star Trek: Deep Space Nine even joked about how the change from the more human-like way the Klingons looked in Star Trek: The Original Series to their armored, wild-haired, and bony-forehead appearance in Star Trek: The Next Generation was something the Klingons "do not discuss with outsiders." But when Star Trek: Discovery season 1 redesigned the Klingons (many Trekkers felt unnecessarily) to be hairless and appear even more alien, the uproar was significant. As a 23rd-century-set prequel, Star Trek: Discovery caused issues with canon, and the Klingons were one of the least popular aspects of the series, although Discovery also laudably introduced the first female Klingon High Chancellor, L'Rell (Mary Chieffo). After Star Trek: Discovery season 3 shifted its setting to the 32nd century, its version of the Klingons haven't been seen since.

Related: Star Trek Shows The Other Side Of First Contact's Coolest Scene

It's notable that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds, which is set just a couple of years after Star Trek: Discovery season 2, hasn't shown the Klingons. Granted, Strange New Worlds is focused on introducing new aliens and planets to canon, and the classic alien species the series has re-imagined is the Gorn. A future version of Admiral Christopher Pike (Anson Mount) mentioned the Klingons and brought a time crystal in Strange New Worlds ' season 1 finale, but the question of which version of the Klingons will be seen on the show remains unanswered. It seems that outside of Star Trek: Lower Decks , the Klingons are a persona non grata alien race with the live-action Star Trek series wary or unsure how to deal with them post- Star Trek: Discovery season 2. Even Star Trek: Picard seasons 1 and 2 had no dealings with the Klingons at all, although that's about to change with Picard season 3.

Worf's Picard Season 3 Return Won't Address Star Trek's Klingon Problem

Worf (Michael Dorn) returning in Star Trek: Picard season 3 will be the first live-action sighting of a Klingon since the USS Discovery left the 23rd century behind. Worf's comeback will answer some important questions about where he's been since Star Trek: Nemesis , and it could also address the state of the Klingon Empire in Picard 's early 25th-century timeframe. While it'll be exciting to see Worf again, his comeback won't address the lingering issue of the Klingons' status in Star Trek: Strange New Worlds ' 23rd century or in Star Trek: Discovery 's 32nd century, where there has been zero references to the Klingons even after two seasons of Captain Michael Burnham (Sonequa Martin-Green) reuniting the broken United Federation of Planets and meeting that era's Cardassians, Bajorans, Ferengi, Romulans, and Vulcans.

It's quite possible that rather than finally fixing its Klingon problem, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Discovery will continue to simply avoid the Klingons for the foreseeable future. Strange New Worlds could easily leave it so that after Star Trek: Discovery season 2, the Klingons aren't encountered again until Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner) faces them on Organia in the TOS episode, "Errand of Mercy," which was the Klingons' first Star Trek appearance. Star Trek: Discovery could also keep on ignoring the Klingons in season 5, but this would be unfortunate because it would only compound the problem Discovery created with its ill-conceived revamp of the Klingons in the first place.

Star Trek Adventures: The Klingon Empire

Some 53 years ago, when “Errand of Mercy” aired, Star Trek fans were introduced to the Klingons, arguably the most popular and well-known species in the setting next to Vulcans and the ubiquitous Humans. They rapidly became a fan favorite, and when FASA Corporation published The Klingons sourcebook, written by John M. Ford, for their edition of Star Trek: The Role Playing Game in 1983, fans had the opportunity to roleplay in the Star Trek universe from a whole new perspective. Since then, through more than 30 years and the addition of six series and hundreds of hours of new episodes and motion pictures, none of the official Star Trek tabletop roleplaying game licensees have published a Klingon supplement, until now.

Modiphius Entertainment and the entire Star Trek Adventures development team are proud to present a core rulebook that contains complete rules for the game, as well as a wealth of information on the Klingons, their society, military, starships, warriors, and so much more. The book is compatible with all the supplements released for the game to date, and accessories for the Klingon rulebook are currently in development.

Star Trek Adventures: The Klingon Empire

This core rulebook contains the same rules presented in the Starfleet-focused core rulebook released in 2017. The award-winning design team, including 2d20 developer Nathan Dowdell, took the opportunity to edit and streamline the rules chapters based on fan feedback since the game’s launch, and introduce new rules for reputation, honor, glory, and house management. Now, for the first time, you and your fellow players can create your own noble Klingon House and seek out glory. Everything you need to create brave Klingon warriors and fearsome Klingon warships are available for you to use.

In addition to the revised rules, the book contains extensive chapters on Klingon history, culture, politics, military, and planets. Players have more than a dozen Klingon starships to choose from and make their own, creating their own ship to crew and take into battle. Players will be able to play Klingons from most any Star Trek era, including pure-bred Klingon warriors as well as those afflicted with the Augment Virus, the QuchHa’ . Fans of Star Trek: Enterprise , The Original Series , and The Next Generation era will all find materials to use in their games and play in any time they choose.

For gamemasters, there is detailed guidance on running Klingon adventures and campaigns, more than twenty canonical non-player characters, a dozen Klingon-oriented mission outlines, and an introductory adventure designed to kick off your group’s first session as bold Klingon warriors. The development team’s ambassador from the Klingon Language Institute even contributed a short language primer on Klingonese, for those gamemasters and players who want to immerse their group in their adventures.

If you and your game group have ever dreamed of playing Klingons fighting for empire and honor, this is the book for you. While the Klingon Empire has values and perspectives rather different from those of the Federation, the honorable warriors, scientists, and engineers of the Empire are every bit as daring, curious, and courageous as their Starfleet counterparts.

Star Trek Adventures: The Klingon Empire

Pre-orders for the print edition of this book are available now at Modiphius.net, along with options for ordering the digital edition itself, as well as a special print collector’s edition . Anyone pre-ordering any version of the book immediately receives a massive, 384-page digital preview of the book. Once the world resumes more regular operations, Modiphius will print the final, expanded version for both physical and digital release, with additional artwork and text. Customers pre-ordering either the standard or collector’s print editions will receive the PDF preview as soon as they order, followed by a digital copy of the expanded, final version, as well as the print version of the hardback rulebook.

The Klingon Empire rulebook brings a fresh perspective to the Star Trek Adventures roleplaying game, one that Modiphius and the Star Trek Adventures design team are immensely proud of. Pre-order the book now from Modiphius.net and bring glory to your House! Qapla’ !

Star Trek: The Next Generation - A Klingon Challenge

A Klingon Challenge title screen

Star Trek: The Next Generation – A Klingon Challenge was a video-based board game for three to six players produced by Decipher in 1993 . It was released mainly to capitalize on the flood of "VCR board games" many game companies released at the time. The video footage was filmed on the actual Star Trek: The Next Generation sets and was produced by series production staff; the material was vague enough that the game could play differently every time.

The game was produced in the US by Decipher, and in the UK and European markets by Milton Bradley .

Decipher TNG Klingon Challenge

Game box and components

A renegade Klingon named Kavok has hijacked the USS Enterprise -D and set course for Qo'noS at maximum warp. The ship has a skeleton crew aboard (the players), as it was undergoing repairs at the time. The crew has sixty minutes – possibly less because of localized disturbances in the space-time continuum en route – before the ship reaches Klingon space and Kavok uses it to start a new Federation /Klingon conflict.

As the video plays, the crew (players) move around the board trying to obtain five isolinear chips they can use to reprogram their tricorders , as well as accessing the security room to pick up a phaser , before reaching the bridge to stop Kavok. However, Kavok knows the players are trying to stop him, so he jumps in from time to time to force players to make certain moves or draw certain cards.

There are three types of cards which players may draw during the game:

  • Holodeck cards – holographic simulations of the Enterprise crew offer advice. Players usually receive a benefit or bonus from this advice.
  • Bij (Klingon for punishment) cards – players experience a forfeit at the top of the card. In the event of a "systems malfunction" immediately after a declaration of Bij , the player receives the positive bonus at the bottom of the card, much to the dismay of Kavok.
  • Computer Access cards – cards which trigger an event, usually at a specific time on the videotape, or by entering a particular location on the game board. These are usually how players gain isolinear chips.

There are also other mechanics provided by the game:

  • A series of stickers are used: rank insignia to represent the order of play (highest rank goes first) – rank is determined by drawing tokens at the start of the game; the combadges the players must use when speaking to Kavok; and the player who stuns Kavok receives a sticker medal.
  • Players can be placed in stasis , either by Kavok, or by a card. Plastic tubes are placed over the player token to represent the stasis field .
  • Bridge tokens are shuffled and placed on the bridge space at the start of the game. When a player has reached the bridge, on their turn, they may pick up the top token – if they reveal the caption "you stun Kavok", the game is won; "Access Denied" ends their turn, and they must wait to try again.

If a player can get all the needed chips, access the Jefferies tube to the bridge and stop Kavok before time runs out, they win the game. In the event that no players win, the Enterprise is destroyed (footage from " Yesterday's Enterprise " and " Cause And Effect " is used to illustrate the Klingon attack). After the destruction, a title card reveals that the Enterprise passed through a temporal causality loop , encouraging the players to rewind the tape and play again to avert the disaster.

  • The non-US versions of the game featured a black background for the box art, rather than the white background used for the US release.
  • The non-US game board is more detailed, with bespoke images of the card designs for their position on the board and a more distinct movement track.
  • There are also two different types of isolinear chips – the US version features chips which resemble the actual props, which slide into slots in the tricorder; non-US versions have small T-shaped pieces which fit into cutouts in the side of the tricorder.
  • Images of Kavok were later used for game cards in the Blaze of Glory expansion for Decipher's Star Trek Customizable Card Game First Edition.
  • A follow-up game, Borg Q-Uest , was planned but never released.

These handy medical devices are inspired by the 'Star Trek' tricorder

Two hundred years from now, medical tricorders like the ones depicted in Star Trek will be as common as tongue depressors. They’ll be unremarkable, mobile tools on our SpaceX starships shuttling us back and forth to Mars. Diagnosing cancer will only take a single wave over our bodies with a palm-sized sensor.

That’s the dream.

The reality, best embodied in two XPRIZE Tricorder competition finalists, is that the devices are somewhat ungainly and they feature distinctly 21st century diagnostic equipment. They work with mobile phones, but don’t try hanging either one of them around your neck.

SEE ALSO: IBM's Watson will help diagnose heart disease when doctors may have missed the signs

They are tricorders in only the most limited sense, and should not be confused with the so-called “ Tricorder phone ,” from SCiO. That one includes a molecular scanner for identifying everything from the medicine in pills to the freshness of tomatoes. That device is more akin to the Tricorder Star Trek’s chief science officer Mr. Spock carried.

What the XPRIZE’s tricorder-like devices can do, however, is help average consumers diagnose themselves for a variety of conditions.

Final Frontier and its co-finalist Dynamical Biomarkers emerged out of a field of approximately 40 other contenders. All were competing to develop the first commercial medical tricorders, and all are at least inspired by Star Trek medical officer Dr. McCoy’s favorite tool.

Competition sponsor Qualcomm Foundation first whittled that list down to 10 companies that would develop prototypes and test them at University of California, San Diego. That work has been going on for about a year.

“Based on initial performance, only two teams made it to final consumer testing phase,” said Grant Campany, prize lead for the Qualcomm Tricorder XPRIZE.

Competition organizers identified 13 illnesses and conditions, including amemia, HIV, cancer, COPD, urinary tract infection and leukocytosis, that the winning systems would have to accurately identify.

“We looked at a large range of diseases, chronic and acute that affect the majority of people in the world,” said Campany. In the end, they chose based on the frequency of the disease and availability of subjects based, at least in part, on proximity to UC San Diego.

For the tests, XPRIZE recruited people whom they knew had these maladies and then let them spend anywhere from 90 minutes to a full day with the two remaining competitor devices. Could these tricorder wannabes accurately diagnose maladies these subjects already knew they had?

Both the Final Frontier and Dynamical Biomarkers devices are designed for consumers, not doctors. They use mobile interfaces and customized diagnostic equipment, like blood pressure cuffs, a pulse oximeter (those things that clip onto your fingertips) and hand-held thermometers. The devices ask a series of questions, through mobile apps, collect vital signs and then choose which tests to run to identify what’s wrong.

It’s a lot like what happens to you in the first 10 minutes of your visit to urgent care, but without a nurse or doctor present.

Image: xprize

The Dynamical Biomarkers tricorder entrant, which doesn’t have a name, was developed by Chung-Kang Peng, director of the Center for Dynamical Biomarkers at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard Medical School. Trained as a medical doctor, but with a background in science and engineering, Peng and his team built a system that has modules for each of the 13 maladies.

The device, which was built in cooperation with HTC, is a small printer-sized box with a smartphone sticking up out of the center. If someone uses the Bluetooth camera to take a picture of their inner ear, the phone will show them their diagnosis.

While neither of the tricorders is intended for medical offices, they could end up near them or with people who have some medical training.

“In our scenario, we want to deploy this kind of system in rural village with no healthcare resource,” said Peng, who noted that China’s 1 million "barefoot doctors, " who have helped spread medical care across the country through the use of trained townspeople, might be some of the best caretakers for this technology.

They could use the tricorder to diagnose, send the information to the cloud where medical professionals are waiting, confirm the diagnosis and get treatment delivered to them on the ground.

Peng says China’s barefoot doctors is a good program, but “now it needs to be upgraded to high-tech barefoot doctor.”

The Dynamical Biomarker tricorder may eventually sell for $500.

Basil Harris, who works as an ER doctor in Philadelphia, hopes to get his Final Frontier Dexter tricorder, which features wearable sensors and the hand-held forehead temperature reader, into more urban environments. He explained that such a device could break down the barriers that currently prevent 30 percent to 40 percent of his patients from getting the medical care they need.

While Dexter is designed to be used by consumers, Harris said early deployment could be in urgent care and emergency rooms.

Dexter may sell for $200 (not counting the cost of a paired smartphone), but in the long run, Harris envisions different levels of tricorder devices. There might be the $200 take-home device and larger kiosk-based ones that end up in your local Walgreens, where customers can walk in and do a quick self-diagnosis.

Winning the future

On Wednesday, XPRIZE announces how the judges are divvying up the remaining $9 million in prize money. Campany wouldn’t share which system did the best job on diagnosis. However, he’s excited about the results and potential impact 23rd-century-inspired diagnostic equipment could have on our 21st-century healthcare problems.

The XPRIZE competition is designed, at least in part, to “address current market failure” in healthcare. Grant pointed to the escalating healthcare costs around the world and asked the fundamental question, “How do you care for millions of people outside the system?”

With doctors being one of the scarcest resources in healthcare , these tricorders could have a “profound potential impact.”

It’s difficult to resolve the grand dreams of Campany, Peng, and Harris with the reality of these devices that sit on a table top and require the user to blow into tubes, cuff their arms and measure their pulse and blood oxygenation through their fingertips. It just doesn’t feel like the future.

“They’re not like a magical wand device that you can wave over somebody. The way I view it, these are the first-generation tricorders,” said Harris. “We’re just scratching the surface of what’s possible.”
