As the “gateway to the fjords”, there are many fjord cruises from Bergen to choose from . It can be a little overwhelming knowing which one is the right fit for you. But I’m here to help!

I have lived in Bergen for more than 6 years now, and grew up just a few hours from here (by the fjords). As a result, I’m the perfect person to share the best fjord cruises leaving from Bergen!

In the past I have covered some of the great tours and excursions in Bergen , but the ones on this list are focused on just the fjords.

There are a few fjords within easy reach near Bergen, such as the Hardangerfjord, the Sognefjord (with its arms) and Osterfjorden. Some of these are amongst the best fjords in Norway , in my opinion.

What is a fjord cruise?

In my Norway travel guide I have explained in detail what a fjord is, so I won’t spend too much time on that here. In short, a fjord is a body of water connected to the ocean , that was created by the glaciers of the last ice age.

There are over 1700 named fjords in Norway, which is quite insane to think about. It is not hard to understand why Norway is the official land of the fjords.

So, what is a fjord cruise ?

There are two types of fjord cruises. One type of fjord cruise is a large cruise ship going on a several days long trip along the Norwegian coastline and into the fjords. Cruise lines like P&O , Costa, MCS and Viking Cruises all have cruises to the Norwegian fjords.

However, the Bergen fjord cruises we are focusing on today are slightly different. They are also what most people think about when they hear the term.

A fjord cruise is a fancy name for a boat trip on the fjord. It has gotten its name because you are cruising silently on a fjord – and probably to make it sound a little more inviting than just “boat trip”.

The cruises can take any shape or size, from large electric vessels to small, fast-paced ones. All though the latter is often called a “Fjord Safari” instead.

No matter where in Norway you go, you are likely to come across a fjord cruise. Whether that’s Flåm , Geiranger, Stavanger or even Oslo .

And of course Bergen. Which is the focus of this article.

5 Best Fjord Cruises from Bergen

With Bergen being the largest city in western Norway, and within easy reach of several of the best fjords, it’s only natural that there are loads of fjord cruises to choose from.

That being said, which one should you choose?

Below I have outlined the best fjord cruises from Bergen – and highlighted details about each of them. That way, you can decide which is the perfect one for you!

Going on a fjord cruise is one of the most popular things to do in Bergen , and an absolute must when you visit. All of these start from the docks in the center of Bergen, and are round trip cruises. Unless otherwise specified.

#1 Fjord Cruise Bergen to Mostraumen

The fjord cruise from Bergen to Mostraumen is amongst the most popular ones leaving from the city. This is mainly because it is the shortest and easiest way to see the fjords from Bergen.

If you are spending a day in Bergen and are short on time – and don’t have plans to travel from Bergen to Flåm – this is a good choice.

This 3-hour fjord cruise takes you from the Bergen docks through the Mostraumen strait. Along the way you will see the Osterfjord, one of the fjords closest to the city.

You’ll stay nice and warm inside the boat, which departs year-round. This fjord cruise is beautiful no matter what time of year you visit.

There is also a private option available for this tour.

#2 Sognefjord Cruise from Bergen

The Sognefjord is known as the “king of the fjords”, and with good reason. It is the longest fjord in the world (with the exception of one in Greenland that is frozen – so it doesn’t count, in my opinion). It is also the deepest.

In addition to this, it has some pretty famous fjord arms. Fjord arms are basically smaller fjords that “stick out” of the bigger fjord.

If you imagine your arm and hand being the main fjord (i.e. the Sognefjord in this case), your fingers would be the fjord arms.

At the end of the Sognefjord you will find the Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord, both world heritage fjords and a world heritage site. The latter is listed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List together with the Geirangerfjord (further north).

Therefore, travelling through the Sognefjord from Bergen is a great way to see the length of the world’s biggest fjord. However, it is a full-day trip – so expect to leave Bergen early (at 8 in the morning), and to get back late (around 9 in the evening).

This includes a 2-hour stop in Flåm. I recommend having lunch at the bakery and going on a stroll along the fjord.

Basically, this is a return ticket on the express boat from Bergen to Flåm. It runs only in the summer months. Many locals don’t consider it a fjord cruise, but a mode of transportation. But, as we established above, a fjord cruise is simply a boat on the fjord – so you’re good to go!

You can also consider getting a return ticket for the next day, and spend the night in Flåm! There are some great hotels in Flåm to choose from, and this would give you a chance to explore the village and region more. Note that accommodation is not included in the boat ticket.

#3 The Nærøyfjord Fjord Cruise (including train & bus)

As mentioned, the Nærøyfjord is a fjord arm of the Sognefjord and perhaps the most important destination for fjord tours near Bergen.

On this full day trip, you’ll get to not only experience a fjord cruise on the Nærøyfjord, but also the famous Flåm Railway (one of the world’s most scenic rail journeys).

Thus, this is not just a fjord cruise from Bergen, but a round trip excursion taking you from Bergen to the fjords and back using train, bus and cruise. The Oslo-Bergen railway is also included on this trip.

It is very similar to the Norway in a Nutshell tour , so it is possible to book each leg of the journey individually. If you have more than just a day, I also recommend looking at some of my itineraries , that take you from Bergen to the fjords for a night or two.

Sights along the way on this cruise not only include the Nærøyfjord, but also picturesque fjord villages, waterfalls and of course the Flåm Valley (where the Flåm Railway goes).

#4 Viking Ship Fjord Cruise

If you want a more unique, and exclusive experience, this might be the cruise for you.

Sailing on an authentic Viking ship with just 12 travellers on board is a great way to explore the harbour and sights outside of Bergen. Whilst it doesn’t take you far from the city, and thus not into any of the more dramatic fjords, this can still be worthwhile if you want to go off the beaten path.

During this 1,5-hour sailing you’ll be treated to a hot drink, and some lovely views of the city. Definitely a must for families or Viking enthusiasts!

Fjords Near Bergen: The 3 Most Incredible Fjords Close to Bergen, Norway

Bergen is by far the most popular city to visit if you’re coming to Norway to see the majestic fjords in all their glory, and it’s a great base for a fjord exploration journey.

However, the photogenic fjords you’ve seen in photos are not within Bergen themselves, so let’s take a closer look at the fjords near Bergen, how to get to them, and which you should focus on visiting!

There is technically small fjords all around Bergen (they’re not that impressive), but most tourists who want to see a fjord from Bergen visit either Sognefjord, Osterfjorden or Hardangerfjord, all three reachable within a day trip from Bergen.

All of these three fjords can be visited on a day trip where you leave in the morning, see the fjord, then return to Bergen in the evening. It’s also possible (and even recommended) to book a night at a hotel in the fjord region to further your experience.

With that said, let’s take a closer look at the different fjords near Bergen and how to visit them!

1) Sognefjord / Sognefjorden

The Sognefjord is probably the most well-known Norwegian fjord, and it lies in the heart of the fjord region of Norway. It’s absolutely the best choice if you’re after seeing an idyllic fjord like in the beautiful photos!

There are plenty of amazing places to visit when you’re coming from Bergen to see the Sognefjord. Some places I highly recommend to stop at are:

• Vik : Vik has an incredible 3 stave churches, including the famous Hopperstad Stave Church.
• Balestrand : The small town of Balestrand is most known for the St. Olaf’s Church, but it’s a cozy and chill town where you can really sit back and just relax. The amazing fjord view is seem from the entire town!
• Kaupanger : Kaupanger is a small town that offers an incredible view of the Sognefjord. It has it’s own stave church and many incredible hiking opportunities.
• Flåm : Flåm is one of Norway’s most popular tourist destinations, and it lies at one of the Sognefjord’s most beautiful areas. I recommend riding the Flåmbanen (Flåm train line), but it’s also an incredible visit by car.
• Stegastein View Point : Stegastein View Point is one of the very best places to look down at the Sognefjord. The view point itself is located 650 meters above the fjord, and the view is simply otherworldly! You can easily get there by car or bus. Read more about Stegastein View Point .

In addition to those mentioned above, there’s dozens of other small towns and places to stop to just enjoy the amazing fjord. If you’re feeling adventurous, just rent a car an explore the names on the map along the fjord, and you’re guaranteed to have a great time.

How to get to Sognefjord from Bergen : There are daily your buses as well as ferries that take you from Bergen to the Sognefjord. Driving takes around 2.5 to 4 hours depending on which town you want to visit.

2) Osterfjord

Osterfjord is a small fjord that is very close to Bergen. It is much smaller than both the other two options in this article, but the great thing about it is that it’s so close.

You can easily get there from Bergen by bus, and get a small taste of the Norwegian fjords without much hassle.

I would not really recommend Osterfjord if you’re after seeing the spectacular Norwegian fjords, but if you’re in Bergen and want a taste without spending the entire day on a bus, on a ferry or in a car, head to this fjord!

Osterfjord goes around the island called Osterøy, and you can choose to drive along the fjord, or jump on the ferry and get out on the island itself.

3) Hardanger fjord / Hardangerfjorden

The Hardanger fjord, also known as Hardangerfjorden, is the first big fjord that is closest to Bergen . You can get to it by driving south for approximately 1.5 hours by car or bus, so it’s easily reachable.

Hardangerfjorden is Norway’s longest fjord, and even scores as high as the world’s third biggest fjord! It goes all the way from the ocean until it hits the Hardangervidda mountain plateau.

It’s worth noting that Hardangerfjorden has less steep and dramatic mountains rising from the ocean compared to Sognefjorden, but there are other benefits of visiting the Hardanger fjord instead.

Not only can you see the incredible fjord itself, but the area close to the fjord is riddled with amazing sights! Some of the things to check out while visiting Hardangerfjorden is:

• Trolltunga . Trolltunga is one of Norway’s most famous hikes , and the hike trail starts close to Odda , a Hardanger fjord town. The hike is well-known for being difficult , but it’s a truly unique experience if you’ve got the time and skills to get up there!
• Vøringsfossen . Vøringsfossen is in my opinion one of Norway’s most incredible waterfalls, and it’s only a short drive away from the fjord. There are viewing platforms that allow you to get a great look at the waterfall, as well as hiking trails to take you all the way down to the bottom. • Hardangervidda mountain plateau . Hardangervidda mountain plateau is one of the world’s largest mountain plateaus, and the perfect place to go mountain hiking. You can do lots of different multi-day hikes, or just go to a mountain top in a few hours, depending on what you’re after.
• Glaciers . Norway’s third biggest glacier Foglefonna is just a short drive away from the Hardanger fjord.
• Hardanger Bridge . You’ve got to cross the Hardanger Bridge if you’re going to be driving to Hardangervidda, and this bridge offers a unique look down at the fjord. It’s illegal to stop your car on the bridge, but the passengers can indulge in the amazing view while you are going across it!

This all means that the Hardanger fjord is a great destination for both those of you looking for a quick glance at the fjord only a short drive away from Bergen, as well as anyone who’s interesting in some spectacular and unique attractions along the way.

How to go on a fjord tour from Bergen

It’s generally easy to go on a fjord tour if you have Bergen as a base, seeing as the closest fjord is under one hour away from the city center.

There a plenty of companies that offer various fjord tours, either by car, bus or even ferry. All options are fine, and give an amazing experience, but the prices and experience will vary a lot by your choice.

Let’s take a bit of a closer look at the different ways to explore the fjords near Bergen!

Driving a car to see the fjords from Bergen

The arguably easiest way to see the fjords near Bergen is to rent a car and drive to them. All the fjords have roads alongside them, and it’s generally easy to get to all the fjords mentioned in this article.

So just pick up a rental, plot in your desired destination on the GPS, and head out on the road.

The benefit of using a car to see the fjords near Bergen is that you get a lot of freedom to explore as you wish. Don’t care for that particular view? Just keep driving for a better one!

You are also able to explore more remote and authentic Norwegian towns and villages if you arrive by car, since the towns like Flåm tend to be highly catered towards and affected by tourists.

Fjord cruises from Bergen

If you enjoy being out in the waters, then experiencing the fjords near Bergen from the water is by far the best option.

There are small cruise ships and ferries that depart from Bergen city center daily, and head towards either Sognefjorden or Hardangerfjorden.

So book a seat for you and your travel party, meet up early in the morning for departure, and just kick back and relax while the ship takes you to the fjord!

The downside is that this option is a bit expensive, and takes the entire day . You might not be able to go ashore to the small towns along the fjord to experience what life is like there, and spending 9 – 10 hours on a small boat might not be everyone’s cup of tea.

That said, I really enjoy these fjord cruises, because they are truly something special.

Fjord bus tours from Bergen

There are multiple tour guide companies who offer fjord tours from Bergen by bus, and this is a fine option. Just get tickets, hop on the bus, and enjoy the spectacular scenery from the window.

The benefit to this option is that you don’t have to drive yourself, and that you will find it much cheaper than renting a car for the day. Most tour buses make at least 4 or 5 stops for the day at incredible stops that offer amazing views, as well as in cozy towns.

It’s also possible to get on regular public transport buses to see the fjords. That will get you there far cheaper than using a tour guide bus, but it will obviously not have a guide or cater towards tourists.

From there, we sail through magnificent scenery in the Osterfjord towards Modalen, Norway’s second smallest municipality. The crew takes us safely through powerful currents of the shallow and narrow Mostraumen straits. The futher into the fjord we venture, the steeper and more powerful the mountain landscape becomes, and we pass several waterfalls along the way. The captain steers the boat so close to one of these waterfalls that you risk feeling its refreshing mist!

The beautiful fjord landscape is rich in bird and animal life, and, with a little luck, we might see seals sunbathing on the rocky shore or even eagles soaring over us.

Bryggen (The Hanseatic Wharf)

Bryggen in Bergen has since 1979 been on UNESCO´s list over World Cultural Heritage Sites. Bryggen is a series of wooden houses along Bergen Harbour, originating from the Hanseatic (German) activities in Bergen from around year 1350. There has been several fires during the years, and the oldest remaining building is reckoned to be from around year 1702. The buildings were taken over by Norwegians in year 1754.

Fløibanen and Mt Fløien

If you visit Bergen, you should take the Fløibanen Funicular to Mt Fløyen. Both Fløibanen and Fløyen are great experiences, with the best view over Bergen City, Vågen Harbour and Byfjorden (the City Fjord). At Mt Fløyen you have Fløirestauranten and Fløien Shop and Café. Mt Fløyen is a great starting point for hiking in the surrounding mountains. And there are also many activities for children, like the Troll Forest and the best playground in Bergen.

Bergen Cable Car to Mt Ulriken

Mt Ulriken is a great start for getting a view over Bergen and it´s surrounding nature. The Ulriksbanen cable car start at Landås, close to Montana Youth Hostel , and ends at Mt Ulriken (643 masl). During summer, you can do the 13 kilometer long hike over “Vidden”, the mountain from Mt Ulriken to Fløien, and then take the Fløibanen Funicular down to the center of Bergen. At Mt Ulriken, there are also a restaurant.

Edvard Grieg´s home Troldhaugen

The composer Edvard Grieg’s home Troldhaugen is situated at Hop, approximately ten kilometer outside Bergen. Edvard Grieg´s house was built in 1885 and is now a museum. The composer´s hut and Nina and Edvard Grieg´s tomb are located down by the lake in a close distance to the house. Troldsalen Music Hall is a new concert hall which is used for concerts. There is also a café at Troldhaugen.

KODE Museums

Consiting of seven Museums and Composers Homes, KODE Museums has more than 50.000 Paintings, Sculptures, Fine Craft and Installations. The homes of the three composers from Bergen; Edvard Grieg , Ole Bull and Harald Sæverud are all part of KODE, and many concerts are arranged in these homes. The other four KODE Museums are LYSVERKET (temporary exhibitions and permanent works from the collection), RASMUS MEYER (Works by Edvard Munch and other Norwegian artists), STENERSEN (alternating exhibitions, contemporary art, architecture, handicraft and graphic art ) and PERMANENTEN (temporary exhibitions, both contemporary art and works from own collection).

Bergen Aquarium

At Nordnes, the outer part of Vågen (Bergen Harbour), you find the largest aquarium in Norway, Akvariet i Bergen. The aquarium is a great playground for people in all ages, and of course fun for children. With more than 500 species, there are special events every hour during the opening hours. Sea Lion training, Penguin feeding and Guided Tours are some of the events.

Heit Sauna in Bergen

Enjoy the heat in a sauna and jump into the fresh water in Bergen. HEIT BERGEN has two areas with saunas by Puddefjorden. The saunas are located on Marineholmen and in Laksevåg , they are heated with wood. On Marineholmen there are two saunas on floating docks, and in Laksevåg there are two saunas on land, at the far end of the quay. Sauna season: All year round, but check the website for season and booking. You must book an appointment in the saunas in advance, remember to book in the right place. Swimming at your own risk.

Fjord Tours from Bergen

Bergen is known as “The Gateway to the Fjords”. With boats from Strandkaiterminalen at Bergen Harbour and with bus and train from Bergen Bus Station and Bergen Railway Station there are numerous fjord tours to choose between.

We recommend several tours from Bergen. One of them starts with bus from Bergen to Norheimsund. On this tour you will experience a fjord cruise on the Hardangerfjord , from Norheimsund to Eidfjord.

Another tour starts with train on the Bergen Railway from Bergen via the wild and beautiful Flåm Railway to Flåm by the Aurlandsfjord. From Flåm you take a fjord cruise on the Aurlandsfjord and the Nærøyfjord .

Klosterhagen Hotel at Strangehage 2 in Bergen is a small but great hotel. The hotel has 15 high standard rooms at a favourable price. The hotel´s breakfast has a very good reputation. It is only a short 12 minutes walk from the Fish Market to the hotel.

OPUS XVI HOTEL AND RESTAURANT

Opus XVI Hotel is located in the heart of Bergen, at Vågsalmenningen, only a short walk from the Fish market. The hotel is classic, yet modern and luxurious. There is a brand new restaurant, bar and café at the hotel, offering seafood and local produce food.

BERGEN BØRS HOTEL

Bergen Børs Hotel is located in the heart of Bergen, at Vågsalmenningen, a short walk from the Fish market. With it´s elegant rooms and suites, restaurant and bar, and the central location, this is a great hotel to stay at if you want to explore Bergen City.

MONTANA YOUTH HOSTEL

Montana Youth Hostel at Landås is a great and reasonable low-budget accommodation at the hillside by Mt Ulriken and close to Bergen Cable Car that takes you to the top of Mt Ulriken (643 masl) . The hostel is situated five kilometers from the city center of Bergen with good bus-connection between the city and the hostel. Also excellent parking, free of charge for guests.

HOTEL HAVNEKONTORET  

Hotel Havnekontoret is located right in the middle of Bergen’s Bryggen area that is characterised by charming streets and historic buildings. With the best location in town, and an elegance shaped by local history and Baroque Revival architecture, the Clarion Collection Hotel Havnekontoret now stands as one of the smartest hotels in Bergen.

THON HOTEL BRISTOL

Thon Hotel Bristol is a completely renovated and beautiful hotel located close to Torgalmenningen, right in the center of Bergen. From Bristol it is a short distance to everything that can be experienced in Bergen, it is only a few minutes to walk to Fisketorget, Fløibanen, Bryggen, Vågen and all the nightlife and shopping in Bergen.

Where to eat in the Bergen area

There is a large selection of eateries, cafes and restaurants in Bergen, two of which are mentioned in the Michelin Guide. It is Lysverket that has one Michelin-star and Moon that has the MICHELIN Guide’s Point Of View.

Here are some places to eat that have been recommended to me by a real “Bergenser”, someone who has visited most of the places to eat in Bergen.

Hoggorm (Viper) Pizza

Hoggorm Pizza in Nygårdsgaten close to Grieghallen Concert Hall. A good friend of mine said this, quote: – This pizza is simply out of the ordinary. You just have to visit this restaurant, nothing can compare to this extremely great food.

Bryggeloftet & Stuene

Bryggeloftet & Stuene at Bryggen is a great old fashion and a “genuine traditional Bergen” Restaurant. Try the traditional Raspeball every Thursday, or during November and December the traditional Christmas menu, but be sure to book in advance.

Enhjørningen Seafood Restaurant

Enhjørningen Seafood Restaurant at Bryggen is the oldest fish restaurant in Bergen. Enhjørningen has always been considered to be one of the last Hanseatic restaurants, and the seafood is recommended with great reviews.

Spisekroken Restaurant

Spisekroken Restaurant is located at Klosteret on Nordnes, close to the city center. The restaurant is small, but the food is great. The menu changes with the seasons, and the specialities are dishes of calf. The fish is wild-caught white fish and changes from day to day depending on what the fish supplier has to offer.

Kaf Kafé is a cozy café at Bryggen. The coffee and the Cinnamon Buns are superb. And of course, lots of other things to eat, drink and buy.

Restaurant Bare is located on Torgalmenningen in Bergen in the same building as Børs Hotel . Bare has several restaurants.

Restaurant Lysverket is located in Rasmus Meyers Allé in Bergen. The restaurant has one Michelin-star and is located in the same building as Lysverket Museum , one of four KODE museums in Bergen.

Bekkjarvik Gjestegiveri

Why not combine a Fjord Cruise with a great meal. Take a speedboat from Strandkaiterminalen in Bergen to Bekkjarvik Gjestegiveri at Austevoll where you can experience high standard cuisine based on local ingredients. The cruise will take you around 90 minutes. Bekkjarvik Gjestegiveri also provides accommodation.

The Hardangerfjord Area – What to See and Do

The Hardangerfjord area,  the orchard of Norway, is known for Summer Skiing at Folgefonna Glacier and a spectacular fruit tree blossoming in spring.

Lake Bondhusvatnet and the Bondhusbreen Glacier in Kvinnherad was one of the first places the English tourists visited when they discovered Norway in the mid 1800´s.

Drive in the Hardanger area and see the Vøringsfossen Waterfall in Måbødalen in Eidfjord, the Låtefoss Waterfall in Oddadalen and all the other great waterfalls in the Hardangerfjord area.

In summer, you can take part in a Cider Cruise on the Hardangerfjord , where you can combine a fjord cruise in beautiful nature with a visit to some of the local farms along the fjord. Remember that if you want to visit local cider producers, you must book this in advance .

Odda , in the heart of Sørfjorden ,  has now transformed from an industrial town into an adventure town. Trolltunga Active and Trolltunga Adventures are based at Odda, and offers guiding and equipment rental. Some of the adventures they offer are Trolltunga hikes, the Dronningstien hike, Via Ferrata Trolltunga and Tyssedal, Fjord Adventures and Winter Adventures.

Combine a fjord cruise on the Hardangerfjord with a trip to Måbødalen to see the mighty Vøringsfossen Waterfall from the new viewing platform and viewing bridge built in connection with the Hardangervidda National Tourist Route .

We had a brilliant time, and wanted to share our personal experience and tips for this tour with you:

WHEN CAN YOU BOOK THIS BERGEN FJORD CRUISE TOUR?

You can book this full day ‘ Nærøyfjorden Cruise, Flåm And Stegastein Viewpoint ‘ guided tour all year round when visiting Bergen.

It is worth mentioning from our own personal experience, if you book this tour for the cold Winter months, the itinerary order may need to be slightly adapted to accommodate external factors out of Fjordrive AS’s control, such as weather conditions.

For example, when we completed this tour in late November, we still stopped at the Tvindefossen waterfall, however due to the glacial temperatures the waterfall was frozen solid and we were not permitted to get too close due safety reasons. To see a mighty waterfall frozen in its tracks was still pretty cool though!

Likewise, the main fjord cruise that usually departs from Gudvangen village could not due to the water around the area freezing up. Therefore instead, we visited Gudvangen for a food / toilet stop as planned but instead boarded the fjord cruise vessel from a village located 5 minutes up the fjord, called Undredal.

As it turns out, this was a blessing in disguise for us as Undredal is one of the most beautiful and authentic Norwegian villages we’ve ever seen, full of rainbow coloured wooden houses against a mountainous backdrop. We were super happy to visit there, albeit briefly!

Rest assured that Fjordrive AS do their absolute best to make sure customers still get to experience as much as they possibly can despite these kind of external factors they may face.

WHAT TO EXPECT ON THE DAY: THE FULL ITINERARY

Pick-up from bergen centre.

Make your way to the designated pick-up point in central Bergen. When we visited, they lay-by they used was located here just outside of the Tourist Information centre on the Fish Market side of the Vågen harbour. It’s directly opposite the Scandic Torget Bergen hotel.

You’ll know you’re in the right place as there will most likely be your other tour companions there too.

For our tour, the minibus left at 8am sharp, so it is advised to arrive to the meeting point 10-15 minutes beforehand.

In case of any unknown changes since we did this tour, always follow the direction of the pick up information sent to you directly by the tour operator, which is usually a day or so before the tour commences.

After your assigned guide arrives and performs a quick head count, your small group will be welcomed onto the modern Mercedes minibus to begin your epic full-day tour!

The first scenic stop on this ‘ Nærøyfjorden Cruise, Flåm And Stegastein Viewpoint ‘ is Tvindefossen waterfall – a dramatic and mighty waterfall that tumbles fiercely down the rugged 150 metre high cliff face!

This waterfall is also conveniently close to the roadside, so you can easily stand back and appreciate its beauty straight off the minibus if that’s as far as you wanted to go.

Or, during the warmer Spring / Summer months, you have the opportunity to get even closer to feel the sheer power and rush of this natural scenic hotspot.

As mentioned before, note in the colder Winter months this waterfall will be frozen solid and the ability to get too close will be limited due to safety precautions.

STOP 2: STEGASTEIN VIEWPOINT

The next stop on this full-day tour, Stegastein viewpoint, was one of our absolute favourite highlights of this entire trip!

Set a staggering 650 metres above the Nærøyfjord, this unique viewing platform juts and cantilevers 30 metres out from the mountainside, allowing for truly undisturbed panoramic views of the Nærøyfjord below, which you will not get anywhere else!

As an added bonus, the mountain road up from Aurland to Stegastein is part of the recognised “National Scenic Routes” in Norway. While a very safe road, it is worth noting those with a fear of heights best not to look out the window, as the sheer drops as you wind up the mountain could be unsettling for you!

STOP 3: GUDVANGEN VILLAGE TO BOARD THE NÆRØYFJORDEN SCENIC CRUISE

Cruise on the scenic E16 highway to the secluded village of Gudvangen, the gateway to the protected and UNESCO World Heritage Listed Nærøyfjord, where your scenic cruise will begin!

First, spend a short while exploring the scenic complex at Gudvangen village, making the most of the toilet, large café and gift shop facilities. We loved that this complex had a really welcoming, Norwegian wood cabin vibe throughout!

When the time comes, board the modern, state of the art luxury cruiser for the main event of this tour – the 2 hour cruise down the idyllic Nærøyfjord in ultimate style and comfort!

Sit back and relax in the warm, modern lounges of the lower deck or venture to the 2 open top decks for epic views of these beautiful, gigantic fjordlands.

STOP 4: FLÅM VILLAGE

This wonderful scenic cruise terminates in the tiny village of Flåm. As you disembark you’ll basically see a cluster of small wooden buildings consisting of a large gift shop, toilet facilities, a café and even a pub lined along the shipping dock, which is the main area you will explore before heading to the minibus.

Here is also the terminating station of Flåm railway, where you are likely to see people boarding and waiting for a train. Directly next to this is the bright yellow building of the Flåm Railway Museum , a small museum which is definitely worth a look round! The museum is free to enter.

Get all comfortable, cosy and even had a little snooze on the direct drive from Flåm village back to Bergen city centre. Drop off is at the same location as this morning’s pick-up.

HOW MUCH DOES THIS FULL-DAY NÆRØYFJORDEN, FLÅM AND STEGASTEIN TOUR COST IN 2024?

BERGEN FJORD CRUISE TOUR: ADDITIONAL FAQ’S

How many people will be on this tour.

This Bergen fjord cruise tour has a maximum capacity of 20 people, due to the smaller size of the minivan. This makes the tour feel a lot more intimate and less of a ‘mass tourism’ trip.

HOW LONG IS THE DRIVING ON THIS TOUR?

It is important to note that there is a considerable amount of driving on this full day tour, however it is necessary to enable you to see so much and travel to such incredible locations from the convenient pick up location of Bergen city in just one day.

From our personal experience, the guide was very aware of this and ensured we had adequate stops to go to the toilet, stretch your legs, get refreshments every 1.5 / 2 hours, clearly communicating and consulting personally with the group as to how long they wanted to wait for the next one, etc.

The longest driving stint was from Flåm village back to Bergen at the end, which we assume just seemed longer as this was a direct drive back to the city without any additional scenic stops. Nonetheless, by that point our group was super tired and the majority of us just relaxed and snoozed until we returned back!

ARE PREGNANT WOMEN ALLOWED ON THIS TOUR?

Yes, pregnant women are permitted on this full-day Bergen fjord cruise tour. I can personally vouch for this as when we took the tour, I was 30 weeks pregnant with our son!

I contacted Fjordrive AS beforehand and they were extremely accommodating and assured me they would make multiple toilet stops on the way and ensure I was comfortable – which they did.

Once thing I would suggest is, despite the minivan being comfortable, there isn’t an awful lot of legroom and the most we drove without stops is 2.5 hours, which was on the way back. So it all depends on how far along you are and how comfortable you are sitting down for an extended period of time.

I know I was beginning to struggle with that, so I invested in this Emoobin Donut Pain Relief Pillow for Pregnancy , which I had brought to Bergen with me. This subtle addition was a life saver and make me a lot more comfortable on this trip!

BERGEN FJORD CRUISE TOUR: OUR TOP TIPS

1. If possible, try to book this tour on a day where the weather is not forecast to be a total wash out with rain, as this will make the experiences and scenic stops a lot more enjoyable. This is not always possible with the notorious wet weather of this region, so we advise to pack a light rain poncho or umbrella just in case!

2. Lunch or refreshments are not included in the price of this tour, however there are plenty of opportunities to additional purchase them throughout the day. The majority of the time it is quick sandwiches and snacks on offer, but the Gudvangen village café or Flåm village stops are your best bet for more of a hearty full cooked lunch.

3. As mentioned before, note that the tour itinerary may need to be slightly modified during the colder Winter months due to unforeseeable weather conditions, however Fjordrive AS will do their absolute best to make sure the tour is adapted to still the best it can be.

4. You will be taking lots of photographs throughout the day, so make sure your phone does not lose charge! There are apparently USB charging ports on the minibus, though we didn’t personally see or use them. We recommend potentially taking your own portable battery charger and lead just in case!

CONCLUSION: IS THIS BERGEN FJORD CRUISE TOUR WORTH IT?

In conclusion, we believe that is full day “ Nærøyfjorden Cruise, Flåm And Stegastein Viewpoint “ guided tour absolutely worth the trip.

While we understand it is more on the expensive side, having personally experienced the trip and itinerary we believe the distance covered, guide professionalism, itinerary planned, transport comfort and most importantly – the scenic sights and activities included – are worth the price paid.

As long as you are prepared that it is a long old day (approximately 11 hours) with quite a fair bit of driving with stops, we are confident you will enjoy every moment of this epic adventure exploring the jaw-dropping Nærøyfjord and surrounding Vestland of North West of Norway from Bergen!

A BERGEN FJORD CRUISE ALTERNATIVE

If however, if you are tight for time in Bergen or would just prefer a shorter trip, the very popular Mostraumen Fjord Cruise is a good alternative for you.

This Bergen fjord cruise ventures down the Western fjords easily accessible from Bergen, including the Osterfjord, and is very popular with visitors for a number of reasons.

Firstly, it’s super convenient to get to by yourself, simply make your own way to the main Vågen wharf in Bergen centre and board the vessel from there.

Likewise, it is only a half day tour, lasting just 4 hours from start to finish, leaving port at 10am and returning around 2/2.30pm.

This tour is resultantly a lot cheaper as well, starting at just £60 GBP / $77 USD per adult!

The highlights for us on this Mostraumen Fjord Cruise were actually located near the very end of the Osterfjord, before the boat turned back around for its return journey.

First was the tiny settlement of Mostraumen, accessed by a narrow canal, and the second were the large waterfalls at the end of the Osterfjord. As we visited in November, these were actually frozen solid when we visited!

OUR VERDICT

When we visited Bergen, we were fortunate enough to experience both the Nærøyfjorden to Flåm fjord cruise and Stegastein viewpoint full day tour and the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise, so had the opportunity to compare the two directly.

If you can only do one fjord cruise from Bergen, we would highly suggest the “ Nærøyfjorden to Flåm fjord cruise and Stegastein viewpoint ” full day tour, as here the fjords are miles larger and more impressive, plus you see so much more during the day.

We personally found the pace of the Mostraumen Fjord Cruise quite long winded too, it seemed to take a while to get to the actual fjord itself. However – this may well be because we were directly comparing to the full day tour we had taken first!

However, as mentioned previously, this half-day Mostraumen Fjord Cruise alternative is still very picturesque (particularly as you come to the end of the Osterfjord) and worth the trip if you do not have the time for our recommended full-day tour.

How to Get to the Fjords from Bergen

When visiting Bergen, you’ll see all of these flyers and ferries promoting day trips to the fjords. There are so many ways to get to the fjords from Bergen, and there are so many different place-names that are unfamiliar to visitors. I decided to write an overview of which areas are the best places if you want to take a day-trip from Bergen to get to the fjords. There are better tours than others, and there are more scenic places than others, but it depends on how much time you have, your budget, and your own personal interests. Here’s how to get to the fjords from Bergen!

What to consider, how much time do you have.

How much time do you have? From Bergen, you can either take a half-day trip or a full-day trip. The half-day trips take 3-4 hours, while the full-day trips take up to 12 hours. The more time you have, the more flexibility and chance you have to see the dramatic fjords. Half-day trips do not take you to the most dramatic places.

What is your budget?

Any tour from Bergen is expensive, often costing between 1000 and 2000 NOK. The half-day trips are of course cheaper, varying from 450 to 700 NOK. The more money you spend, the more you’ll see. The cheaper tours may not be worth your money as they don’t take you out to the most dramatic areas.

Can you do it yourself?

The ‘in a nutshell’ options are not guided and use public transport, which you can book yourself. In some cases, it works out to be cheaper.

Do you need a guide? Possibly. It depends on your interests. I’m working on writing guides to all these places, but hiring a guide in some cases is really well worth it. You want to make sure the guide knows the areas, though. If you end up with a new guide who lives in Bergen, chances are they’ve been to the fjords just a couple times.

The reality of seeing the fjords

Bergen is on the coast, while the most dramatic scenery is found inland. You don’t get dramatic fjords along the coastline; instead you get rocky islands and a very flat landscape. If you want to see the most dramatic bits of nature, you have to head inland. This is when a half-day becomes a full-day.

Spending the night

If you get the chance, opt to spend a night in one of the small villages to break up your trip. It gives you more time to see things and enjoy the nature. Try to spend a night in places like Flåm, Balestrand, Ulvik, Eidfjord, or even Voss.

Full day trips: The Sognefjord

The Sognefjord is the longest fjord in Norway and the second longest in the world. You won’t have time to see the whole fjord in a day, and you don’t need to. Towards the sea, it’s quite flat and rocky (and maybe a little dull). Further inland you do get the more dramatic scenery. However, visiting the Sognefjord is perhaps best when you visit the small fjord branches off it, namely the Naeroyfjord (UNESCO World Heritage listed) and the Aurlandsfjord (where Flåm is). These are the two ‘must-see’ fjords on the Sognefjord and where most tours will take you.

Flåm Railway

Norway in a Nutshell

Norway in a Nutshell (NiN) is the famous day trip that will take you to some of the most beautiful places in Western Norway. It comprises of a series of public transport routes that will take you on trains, ferries and buses past dramatic scenery. It’s a great option if you really want ‘Norway in a nutshell’, but keep in mind it’s incredibly popular in summer.

What You Do:

• Train from Bergen to Voss
• Bus from Voss to Gudvangen (note – you don’t stop at Tvindefossen or Stalheim Hotel)
• Ferry from Gudvangen – Flåm on the Naeroyfjord (the true highlight!)
• Train from Flåm to Myrdal ( the famous Flåm Railway )
• Train from Myrdal to Bergen

The Good Bits:

• The Gudvangen to Flåm Ferry is incredible and is the absolute best of the best when it comes to getting a true feel for the fjords. I can’t recommend it enough
• The Flåm Railway is incredibly famous and well worth it. You see the typical West Norwegian landscape on a 55-minute train ride!

Things to Consider:

• The trip takes 10-12 hours and has little time to stop and relax. You are constantly on the move, and photo-stops on the trains and buses aren’t possible.
• Besides the Gudvangen – Flåm ferry, you don’t see fjords. You’re up in the mountains
• Consider spending a night in Flåm to make the trip more relaxing

Sognefjord in a Nutshell

The Sognefjord in a Nutshell is run by the same team as Norway in a Nutshell (NiN from here on in), but you take a 5.5 hour ferry cruise from Flåm to Bergen instead of taking a train back. Is the Flåm – Bergen Sognefjord cruise worth it? Maybe for the first couple hours. I find long parts of it to be a little boring, and the ferry is a little basic for such a long trip. Still, though, you see most of the Sognefjord and the coast around Bergen.

• Train from Bergen to Myrdal
• Train from Myrdal to Flåm (the famous Flåm Railway)
• Ferry cruise from Flåm – Bergen
• Taking the Flåm Railway, of course
• You get some time in Flåm before the afternoon cruise
• The Flåm to Bergen cruise often has commentary and you do pass some genuinely pretty places
• While it’s not that much longer than NiN, it can feel it. The train from Bergen to Myrdal is long, and the ferry is even longer.
• Consider breaking up the trip with a night in Flåm or Balestrand

Hopperstad Stave Church in Vik

Day cruise to Vik

If you want to see the fjords but feel Flåm is a little too far away or crowded, you can book a day cruise to Vik, a small village on the Sognefjord. You take the Bergen – Flåm ferry but get off in Vik, and get five hours in the village to taste cheese, have soup for lunch, and have a guided tour of the Hopperstad Stave Church, possibly the oldest of the stave churches. This is all included in your ticket.

• Morning ferry Bergen – Vik (same ferry that goes to Flåm)
• Lunch in Vik followed by cheese tasting
• Guided tour of Hopperstad Stave Church
• Ferry back to Bergen
• Hopperstad Stave Church is really worth seeing!
• You won’t see the dramatic scenery you think of when you hear ‘fjord’. The Sognefjord is wide and the mountains in this area aren’t as steep as what you’d see towards Flåm
• It’s the same ferry and the same views back and forth
• You can take a train to Voss and then a bus to Vik and save time and money if you want to see the stave church.

Round trip cruise to Flåm

Want to see Flåm and nothing else? Take that 5.5 hour ferry from Bergen to Flåm! You get 2 hours to explore Flåm before turning around and going back.

Honestly? Taking that 5.5 hour ferry two times in one way sounds tedious to me. If you’re thinking about doing this one, spend the night in Flåm or do NiN.

Guided bus tour to Flåm

• Drive Bergen to Voss and then to Gudvangen via Stalheim Hotel. Then you head from Gudvangen to Flåm
• Drive Flåm – Aurland and up to the famous Stegastein Viewpoint
• Lunch in Flåm
• Ferry Flåm – Gudvangen (the same very scenic ferry I mentioned above)
• Get picked up in Gudvangen and drive back to Bergen

The Good Bits

• Stalheim Hotel and the view from it is INCREDIBLE. And the road down from Stalheim to Gudvangen, Stalheimskleiva, is a terrifying but excellent highlight
• Stegastein Viewpoint is incredible
• Lunch in Flåm!
• The ferry cruise on the fjords is included

Things to Consider

• There’s no Flåm Railway included
• Almost all of the driving is inland. You see the fjords on the cruise and at Stegastein

Full day trips: The Hardangerfjord

The Hardangerfjord is the second-longest fjord in Norway and is often regarded as the most beautiful fjord. It’s a popular place in the summer but generally less crowded than the Flåm area, so it’s a good alternative if you want a little more peace and quiet.

Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell

This is the Hardanger equivalent of NiN. While I haven’t done the program, I have been to all these places, and to be honest it looks lovely and more scenic than NiN. You take a fjord cruise that isn’t as famous as the UNESCO Gudvangen-Flåm cruise, but it is still incredibly breathtaking. Also, the scenery here is a little more varied than what you get on NiN.

• Bus from Voss to Eidford via Ulvik
• Visit the famous Vøringsfossen
• Ferry from Eidfjord to Norheimsund
• Bus from Norheimsund to Eidfjord
• Vøringsfossen is incredible
• Cruising on the Hardangerfjord
• Much like NiN, it’s a lot of being shuffled around with little time to stop and appreciate nature
• Seriously consider breaking the trip up with a night in Eidfjord
• NiN operates all year round; Hardangerfjord in a Nutshell only operates during the summer months. There is a winter version of the tour that doesn’t have the Eidfjord – Norheimsund cruise but instead you drive from Eidfjord to Odda (this is a gorgeous drive!) and then to Rosendal, where you take the ferry back to Bergen. This ferry isn’t as scenic. See below. Click here to see the winter program.

If you want to see the Hardangerfjord but save some money, you can visit Rosendal with the public ferry for a day. You get 3.5 hours in Rosendal, which has a famous manor house (Barony Rosendal) and the Folgefonna Centre which is a museum about the nearby national park. Still, 3.5 hours is a lot of time and you don’t get to see the park.

• 2 hour ferry from Bergen to Rosendal
• 3.5 hours in Rosendal
• 2 hour ferry back to Bergen

The Good Bits :

• The Folgefonna Centre is a great museum about the nature of the region

You don’t really see the Hardangerfjord; most of the cruise is along the coast

There isn’t so much to do in Rosendal

Guided Bus Tour to Hardanger + Lunch and Cider Tasting

Here’s the non-public transport option. You can join a guided bus tour from Bergen to the Hardanger region and get a chance to taste some apple cider. I wouldn’t miss this chance; the region is famous for it. And I personally love it. Bring me back a bottle, please? The bus tours from Bergen have great schedules, but it’s still a lot of driving and being shuffled about.

• Drive from Bergen to Norheimsund, stopping at Steindalsfossen on the way
• Take a ferry from Tørvikbygd to Jondal
• Visit some apple cider farms
• Take the ferry back to Tørvikbygd
• Drive back to Bergen

Shorter Fjord Tours

If you don’t have the time or funds to take a full-day trip from Bergen, there are some wonderful half-day options available.

Bergen - Mostraumen Cruise

This is a very popular tour from Bergen. You go along the coast and then through the Osterfjord towards the Mostraumen Strait. Once there, you turn around and come back to Bergen. They have two departures a day in the summer and also operate in winter. The area is scenic and gives you a glimpse into the Norwegian fjords.

Bergen - Modalen Cruise

This is a different company than the one mentioned above, but it seems like they go to the same place. This tour promotes itself as going all the day to Modalen, a tiny village at the end of the Mofjord (where the Mostraumen Strait is). The area around Modalen was a Viking settlement area and there is a church from 1024 located in the village (though it was rebuilt in 1622)

Bergen RIB Boat Safari

You can book a RIB boat safari from Bergen, which would be a lot of fun. You don’t see the fjords really; you’re more zig-zagging between islands and skerries on the coast. Still, it sounds like a good tour!

Half-day tour to Skjerjehamn

The half-day tour to Skjerjehamn is a nice and popular half-day trip for those with little time, but again it doesn’t take you to the steep fjords. You take a scenic cruise along the coast to Skjerjehamn harbour, where you get to spend a little under an hour walking around before taking the same cruise back to Bergen.

The Three Absolute Best Day Trips from Bergen

I’m always telling people to check if they can fly into Bergen instead of Oslo because Bergen is beautiful and tourists are often a bit underwhelmed by Oslo. But maybe my favorite thing about Bergen is the city’s stunning surroundings. In fact while I love the city, one of the main reasons I moved to Bergen was because it’s near some of Norway’s most incredible fjords, waterfalls, and mountains. For visitors this means that even if you’re only here for a short time you can still get out and see what Norwegian nature is all about. 

There are so many different day trips from Bergen you could take, and I know all the options can be overwhelming. So I thought I would narrow down the list for you with my top three choices for Bergen day trips. And of course if you’d like you can always extend your trip for a bit and spend a night or two in these places.

Hardangerfjord

The second longest fjord in Norway, Hardangerfjord is probably best known for its beautiful springtime views when the fruit trees are in bloom, which usually happens in May. But this fjord is beautiful anytime of year, and just two hours from Bergen, making for a wonderful day trip from the city.

Bergen to Hardangefjord day tours

If you won’t be renting a car, or if you want to see the fjord by boat, there are lots of guided trips of Hardangerfjord on offer, including this small cruise from Bergen to Rosendal , a village at the mouth of Hardangerfjord. And if you want to extend your stay here, you can spend the night at the beautiful Rosendal Fjordhotel right on the fjord. 

Or you could even take  this epic day trip from Bergen to both Hardangefjord and Folgefonna Glacier , Norway’s third largest glacier.

Sea kayaking on Hardangerfjord

One of the best ways to experience the quiet majesty of the Norwegian fjords is by kayak, and this sea kayak tour leaving from Jondal looks incredible. 

Helicopter tour over Hardangerfjord and Trolltunga

Or if you want a truly epic experience, you can take this helicopter tour from Bergen over Hardangerfjord, glaciers, waterfalls, and Trolltunga (Troll’s Tongue), Norway’s most famous cliff. Or a cheaper option is this fjord and mountain helicopter tour from Bergen . 

And if you decide to rent a car you can make lots of stops along the way, or even spend a night along the fjord. You can book your rental car here , and read all my tips for driving in Norway here .

Hiking Trolltunga

You could also carry on to Odda and then hike Trolltunga the next day, though be aware that Trolltunga is an expert level hike. Even if you’re an experienced hiker I’d recommend doing this hike with a guide, and if you want to avoid the crowds (Trolltunga is one of the most popular hikes in Norway), this guided Trolltunga hike with an overnight in a glamping dome would be such a unique experience! If you have a guide you can also hike Trolltunga in the winter. 

Hardangerfjord accommodation

My favorite accommodation on Hardangerfjord is probably Ullensvang Gjesteheim . It’s set on a farm right by the water and one of the prettiest spots along the fjord. It’s super cosy, with the sweetest owners and a delicious breakfast. Check current rates here .

I also love Rosendal Fjordhotel , which is especially convenient if you’ll be taking the Hardangerfjord boat from Bergen, which ends in Rosendal.  Check current rates and availability here . 

Or if you wanted to stay on the other side of the fjord, this vacation home looks gorgeous. And then of course there is the famous Hardanger Panorama Lodge treehouse , which I haven’t stayed at yet but is definitely on my bucket list! Check current rates and availability here

Sognefjord will definitely make an appearance on anyone’s list of the best fjords in Norway . Sognefjord is Norway’s longest and deepest fjord, and the second longest and second deepest in the world, stretching over 200 kilometers and 1,000 meters deep at its deepest points. Several of its branches are probably the most popular fjords for tourists to visit, both because of the beautiful views and their relative easy accessibility from Bergen.

As Norway’s longest fjord, there are of course so many different places along the fjord that you could visit on your Bergen fjord day trip, as close as a couple of hours by train or 2.5 hours by car from Bergen. 

You could take the express boat from Bergen into Sognefjord stopping at Aurland, Flåm, or Balestrand, among other places, or do the popular Norway in a Nutshell public transportation route. I’ve made a detailed guide for Norway in a Nutshell here .

But if you want the freedom to explore on your own, stopping for all the photos you want, explore Sognefjord by car. 

If you’re driving from Bergen you’ll definitely want to drive down the Aurlandsfjellet and Sognefjellet National Scenic Routes , both of which take you along the prettiest fjord and mountain views.  

Sognefjord has a lot of branches, and my two favorites are probably Aurlandsfjord and Nærøyfjord. The village of Aurland is absolutely stunning, and as it’s on the popular Norway in a Nutshell route there’s a lot to do here, including the famous Stegastein viewing platform , which offers incredible views over the fjord. 

And then Nærøyfjord is super narrow and dramatic. My friends and I spent the night at the Gudvangen Fjordtell on Nærøyfjord, which is quite cheap and right by the famous Viking village of Njardarheimr .

In Njardarheimr you can visit people of all ages who have chosen to live as the Vikings did a thousand years ago. This is the perfect place to learn more about the Vikings, from people who still live that way today. Adult tickets cost 205 NOK. 

Sognefjord accommodation

While you can easily see some of Sognefjord on a day trip from Bergen, if you want to really explore the different branches of the fjord you may want to spend a night or two along the fjord. 

I’ve compiled a list of incredible accommodation spots along Sognefjord here , but my personal favorites are: 

Fjærland Fjordstue Hotel in Fjærland dates back to the 1930s and sits right on the fjord. It even has a private beach! This is my favorite place I’ve stayed on Sognefjord, as the views are incredible. Plus there’s a super cute little book town down the street from the hotel, which is home to over four kilometers of books! There is the giant Tusund og ei natt bookstore, as well as small outdoor Sjølvplukk (pick-your-own) shelves calling themselves “the country’s most honest bookstore” where you leave a bit of money for each book you take.  Check current rates and availability here 

Fretheim Hotel in Flåm is a beautifully decorated, refurbished 1800s manor house, with luxurious rooms all with mountain or fjord views. Flåm isn’t the most picturesque part of Sognefjord, however it is the most convenient, as the railway station and ferry port are both an easy 5-minute walk from the hotel. And the hotel really is special! If you stay here, be sure to book a session at the floating sauna just a short walk from the hotel (you can see my TikTok from the sauna here ).  Check current rates and availability here

The Walaker Hotel in Svolvorn, Lustrafjord is Norway’s oldest hotel, dating all the way back to 1640! The hotel is located in the quiet village of Svolvorn right by the beach. The hotel is also nearby the 12th century Urnes Stave Church and Jostedalsbreen Glacier. Check current rates and availability here

The Gudvangen Fjordtell on Nærøyfjord  is budget friendly and right by the Viking village. There’s also a Viking style restaurant at the hotel. Check current rates and availability here

Voss is known as Norway’s adrenaline capital and is only 1 hour 45 minutes from Bergen by car, or just a little over an hour by train, making it an easy day trip from Bergen. 

The town itself doesn’t look that special, but some of Norway’s best outdoor adventure activities are based out of Voss. From river rafting to rock climbing to skiing to sky diving, Voss really has it all.

And if you’re visiting in the winter you’ll definitely want to hit the slopes in Voss. Voss has two ski resorts, Myrkdalen Fjellandsby and Voss Resort. Many of Norway’s world champion and Olympic athletes have trained in Voss and Voss apparently has more medals per capita than any other place in the world!

While you can definitely fit in some outdoor adventures on a day trip to Voss from Bergen, Voss would be a great place to spend a night or two, if you have the time. In fact I would say while Hardangerfjord and Sognefjord are perfect day trips from Bergen, Voss really would be best if you have a night (or longer!) to spend here.

Guided sea kayaking through the Nærøyfjord from Voss

There’s seriously no better way to experience a fjord than from a kayak, and from Voss you can take a guided sea kayaking tour through Nærøyfjord, which is one of the prettiest branches of Sognefjord. Fjord kayaking is very calm, so you don’t need any prior kayaking experience.  Check current prices and availability here

Whitewater rafting through the Raundal valley

Voss is famous for rafting, and a whitewater rafting tour along the Raundal River takes you through a number of Grade III rapids, while being suitable for beginner and experienced rafters alike.  Check current prices and availability here

River kayaking courses

Voss is the perfect place to learn the whitewater kayaking, or level up your skills if you already have experience. You can choose an introductory, novice, or intermediate course based on your level.  Check current prices and availability here

Rock climbing 

Lønahorgi mountain and Uskedalen, a fjord valley outside of Voss, offer Western Norway’s best climbing from beginner to expert levels. You can  book guided rock climbing to fit your level here .

Voss accommodation

Staying at a mountain hytte , or cabin, is just about the most Norwegian thing you can do, and Voss is a great place to get that experience. This Voss cabin is located in Skulestadmo, 100 meters from Bavalls ski lift at Voss Resortand will give you that typical Norwegian experience of going to the hytte. Otherwise you could stay downtown by the train station at either the brand new Scandic Voss or the historic Fleischer’s Hotel .

All these places in Bergen look so stunning. I would love to visit Bergen during my next trip to Norway. I would definitely check out some of the places mentioned here.

Hi Silvia, If I were to make Bergen my base in August and do day trips from Bergen, or even an overnight or 2 somewhere then back to Bergen, how many days would I need to visit the most beautiful sights. Which ones would you recommend? I shall be using public transport as I assume this would be a lot cheaper than hiring a car? Thank you Silvia

We want to do the Fjord Naeroyfjord crusie – what I can’t figure out is which itinerary is the better/preferred route:

A: Bergen-Myrdal-Flam-Gudvangen-Voss-Bergen OR B: Bergen-Voss-Gudvangen-Flam-Myrdal-Bergen?

The routes of course are similar but is there an optimal (prettier view / route) of A or B? Not sure which is the best one to select?

The routes are exactly the same except in reverse, so you the views will be the same!

As dyoll says in summer you can take this ferry through Geirangerfjord, but it doesn’t dock in Geiranger itself.
